Military Ground Vehicles of Your Nation [NO MECHS] Type 6

Postby Anemos Major » Sat Jan 18, 2014 1:21 am

For the old-timers here - welcome one, welcome all. Carrying on our long and great tradition, born in the fire and ashes of the forums however many years ago and carried forwards until this day on the backs of multiple-axis stabilised guns and multifuel engines, we return yet again in a stunning sixth (6th!) installation in our ever-continuing quest to find the greatest AFV of them all, and solve that most eternal of questions - 140mm ETC, yea or nay?

And for the newcomers, and new-timers - welcome to the one and only thread on this hallowed site with a genuine claim to being the greatest thing to happen to Armoured Fighting Vehicles (and their ilk) since Guderian published Panzer Leader. This thread is designed for NSers of all persuasions to come together and discuss matters that relate to AFVs of any sort, from the Mark II tanks of 20th century yore to the hyper-modern Main Battle Tanks of the battlefields of today. Any vague interest relating to armour in NS (or just questions relating to armour in general), any questions, thoughts or creations can be posted here without hesitation - so long as you follow the rules, of course.

Image
Mandatory 'Thread VI' filler.

Image

Simply put - tanks. Not the water kind, either, but the kind with tracks: on this thread, you will be able to discuss matters relating to any kind of Armoured Fighting Vehicle within the constraints outlined below, from the lofty heights of a multi-million dollar main battle tank to the lowlier depths of an armoured personnel carrier or, well, anything military that operates on the ground (with some sort of engine, I suppose).

What sort of context you choose to discuss tanks in is, really, as open as you'd like it to be. If you need people to talk to about how to use armour in Nationstates, whether as part of your roleplaying, simply because you want to construct a factbook or just because you want to know, you can pose your questions here and get them answered. If you've gone off and actually created your own tank, whether in the form of an elaborate work of art or a collection of stats and description - perfect! Come on right in, post it here, and get the discussion going! Need advice on your lineart or some other tank images you've created? That's what we're here for. And if you just want to talk about tanks, or AFVs in general, you've come to the right place. Kick back, relax and start talking away.

It's all very nice and relaxed in here, with common courtesy and understanding keeping this thread ticking - which means, of course, that you need to follow the rules. They'll be posted below, and rigid adherence to them is expected of all posters.

Image

As handed down to us by Risen Britannia, with minor alterations.

ONE (1). Read the OP. For those who don't know what to do, it'll tell you what to do. For those who don't know what the rules are, it'll tell you what the rules are. And for those who want pretty pictures of tanks, there're a few of those too.

TWO (2). Post something, anything - whether it's an idea, a vehicle, some vehicles or just a photo - and whatever you post can be criticised, discussed, examined and cross-examined by the other posters on this thread. So make the most of it - there're plenty of learned fellows here, and they're all happy to make sure you get the feedback you want. If you don't want people talking about something you've posted, don't put it here, put it in your factbook.

THREE (3). Do play nice. That means: civil behaviour, common courtesy, smooth discussion and general friendliness. That means absolutely no: trolling, flaming, baiting, gloating, scratching or biting. Stay on topic, don't be rude and if somebody starts flaming or baiting you, don't fight fire with fire - follow forum procedure and report it.

FOUR (4). Discussion can be conducted both ICly (in-character) and OOCly (out-of-character). There can be sudden transitions between the two, which is a tad jarring, but you'll get used to it soon enough.

FIVE (5). If asked to use spoilers in excessively long posts, use them. Don't clog up a page that other people are trying to use.

SIX (6). Rule 3 reiterated - don't play ball with the rule-breakers. Don't keep the trolls going, don't flame the flamers, follow the SOP outlined above and ignore provocation as needed.

SEVEN (7). If you're starting to feel cocky and/or arrogant, remember: you, just like all of us, are a hairless ape sitting in front of an electronic box. And while some apes are better than others in different regards, you really aren't that much better. Really.

EIGHT (8). This thread is not 'owned': the existence of this thread's basic premise and its modus operandi is an inherently shared effort, and as such, no single player can lay claim to the right to use or refer to this thread. Everybody is welcome under this roof so long as they observe the rules, without exception.

NINE (9). That does not mean, however, that players' creations are not theirs. No plagiarism, no copying, nothing of that ilk, please.

AND THE GOLDEN RULE
No mechs. This means no legged vehicles, or any sort of vehicles that rely on legs for movement, even if designed to fulfill the same role as tanks. This includes hybrids like Ghost in the Shell think-tanks and Tachikomas. If you're looking for a thread about mechs, please follow this link

Gun Calculator

For those problem with mediafire.. you may try using this to view the file instead

View

alternate links

http://depositfiles.com/files/5m1i2pchz

It will calculate muzzle velocity, recoil force, inflight velocity of a projectile and it may provide simple assessement whether your vehicle can safely fire the gun without causing uncomfortable vibrations to the crew.

The spreadsheet is largely based on "Technology of Tanks" by Ogorkieswicz and a book about theory and practice about ballistics and gun designs.

Future updates may include some "penetration" calculator to calculate penetration of projectile to object other than metals (say..concrete)

Final remarks is use at your own risk.. hmm it's still pretty much in infacy.. many stuff there need to be cross checked and debugged. I'm actually want to use Odermatt's equation for calculating maximum pressure but it doesn't seem to work..so i'm stick to Technology of Tanks.

Contact information is provided inside the sheet.

"In an attempt to get people to start linearting more and because I know from personal experience that the tracks are often the hardest bit to get right, I have decluttered my tracks (not the best but they work) and they are now free to use, You don't even have to ask."

Any modifications big or small are fine.

I have redone my "free tracks" sheet into a "Free parts" sheet, so it is now allot neater.

By popular demand.

The purpose of this list is to bring together in one place any resources the erstwhile denizens of this thread have deemed worthy of attention while following the difficult path of an NS ground vehicle designer. Separated into categories for easy browsing, this listing will be available for use by any looking for further guidance in designing vehicles, with (hopefully) fairly consistent updates keeping the list up-to-date and in line with current designers' needs.

Function and Operation.
- I can't guarantee that I'll be able to keep this up.
- As it stands, whenever somebody mentions a proprietary AFV on this thread, I'll put up a link to the post and place it under a particular nation.
- Posts will not be added if there is no original content (copypasted pics with fancy names, I'm looking at you), or if there is no name under which to register vehicles.
- If I have put something here and you'd like me to replace the link with a different one, just TG me about it with the entry name and the new link.
- This list is for NS vehicles - ergo, no alt-universe RL nations in P2TM or anything of that sort.
- Please don't bombard me with telegrams or anything of that ilk about this aside from the above, this is just something I'm experimenting a bit with.
- Currently Updated Up To: Page 470

Tracking in to new thread. and hi Anemos good to see you.

what's being used as material for tank gun ?.. is it the same as rifle barrel ?

Why i'm asking ? Because i need the name and density of the material as input in my barrel making excel. So far i'm using 8250 kg/cubic meter, similar density as steel.

I'm guessing that steel compositions will vary, but as it stands that's what they use. I'm not fully sure about the material properties post-autofrettaging, though (at a guess, the density would rise sectionally). Then you chrome the inside of the gun.

The box inside which they've put the gas turbine that acts as the turbocharger for the diesel. Hence why the 'caisson hyperbar' and the 'turbo compresseur' are pretty much the same module.

Ah, continuing the proud tradition of no mechs, and thus not fulfilling the illogical conclusion of military ground vehicles.

But I understand perfectly, and hey, the OP looks really nifty this time.

I cannot wait to see what interesting and new debates (or old) will spawn in this discussion :)

Hm......I have to wait until someone is online until I make something relevant.

Isn't steel somewhere around 7850 kg/cubic meter?

Yeah I could see it was upstream from the compressor, but I guess I was looking for something that said "turbine" or "le turbine" (I don't speak french)

It's nice. Actually it has same sight as PT-91M. I think rest of PT-91M electronics/optronics are probably better tho.

Are you sure it's a T-72. Turret shape looks more like T-62.

'tis what you get when everybody buys from the French. I'm not sure about the rest of the electronics, since the MP is effectively the higher cost, 'mostly French electronics' counterpart to the AG upgrade.

But the MP's protection and armament is probably a tad better, since the Polish were still lagging behind a bit when they developed the PT-91 (and subsequently the Pendekar). It was scarcely ten years ago that they had to quickly figure out how to copy the old Merida FCS and make their own first-generation ERA when the Soviets stopped selling them advanced tanks, and the ERA they have on the PT-91 is pretty much a direct descendant of their original Erawa (I think the stuff used on the Twardy/Pendekar is considered to be 2nd generation at best).

And here we go - the namesake of this thread (sort of :P).

First things first - I don't like the Tiger I. Just in case I seem a tad biased.

As it stands, you've done the following:
- Decreased the length of the main gun (from L/56 to L/35). Remember, the 'L-something' you see in front of most guns, unless they're British, denotes their length.
- Decreased your frontal protection and redistributed it radically to the sides. You'd end up being a tad heavier than 59t while squandering the Tiger I's big early war advantage, which is a bad idea.
- You've doubled the output of the engine at (it seems) the expense of the range. You don't need to double the output - a p/w ratio of nearly 23hp/t is superfluous in a WWII setting. The M18 was more than fast enough with a p/w of around 19hp/t, and I doubt the Tiger I would be able to reach that sort of speed or reliable output with its drivetrain or its terrible front-drive.

Thanks! I woke up this morning to find Questers setting the pace of the last page of the last thread to something akin to a forced march so the OP is something I whipped up over a strong coffee and half an hour of work, more or less. I'll be changing and adding things as we go - do tell if you have any suggestions!

The picture from which I’ve used for the following example is the Tiger P. This was in competition with the Tiger One. Also with the engine output that was a mistake accidently made, not intended to be intentional by any means. Also the Tiger P’s engine was electric also was regarded as one of the most advanced German tanks. Sadly the tank never saw combat because of the over-the-top complexity.

As for the barrel that was another mistake and shall be changed.
