IIRC the BTR-80 was quite good at whatever it did.
Citing unimproved performance over that is like the US Army refusing to replace the M16, because nothing gives significant enough improvement over it.

BTR-4 is bestbronyetransportyor. It is what BTR-80 should have been. BTR-80A is second best bestbronyetransportyor.

Gavin + stretched hull + BMP-3 turret + 125mm HV gun + BM-21 rocket launchers + 160mm mortar + project pluto engines to make it go fast.

You would disgrace an M113 with Project Pluto engines? Please, everyone knows the only proper propulsion system for AeroGavin is a Project Orion engine. You just squeeze in the nuclear bomb ejection mechanism between the internal parasite fighter and the sponson-mounted flamethrowers.

Pluto = engines
Orion = nitro

Citing unimproved performance is perfectly justified when BTR-4 is only one of several candidates being considered as a replacement for the BTR-80.

Same with the M16 replacement programmes.
And mysteriously, none are good enough to "bother" replacing the M16 with.

It's almost as if academic differences in capability aren't worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

What can I say? The Cold War ended.

It's different for a nation like Iraq, faced with the menace of perpetual conflict. In terms of how military threats are perceived, I could argue the same for India and Azerbaijan.

Iraq is already in a state of perpetual conflict. The one thing the other two have in common with is that they exhibit noticeably more concern for the threat of a war within their own borders than North America. They must also cope with comparatively hostile neighbours.

I suggest you reevaluate your assessment of those three countries and why they're not comparable with each other and why they have different procurement processes.

Hint, the US bankrolls Iraq's procurement processes.
Because the US made it so that that had to happen.

...

There is no conspiracy.
The US (and associate coalition groups) destroyed the Iraqi military. Twice. The US is now funding in significant part the Iraqi military's rebuilding, and it is rebuilding to give Iraq a credible manner of self defence.
The same process is part of the Afghanistan exit strategy.

Then why is Iraq buying weapons from Brazil and Ukraine and hell, even Singapore? If it's a US puppet, why are BTRs even being considered? They made the decision to start from scratch. Let the US arm the new military. It isn't as if they can't just donate some mothballed surplus and take care of Baghdad's hardware needs for the next hundred years or so.

Same reason the US is buying Russian-built equipment for Afghan troops.
They know Russian equipment, they've always used Russian equipment.

Admittedly, a lot of US equipment is going Iraq's way. Downgraded Abrams tanks, the M16 rifle family, Humvees by the thousand.
IIRC the US is drawing up a playbook for the Iraqi Army.

I never called them a puppet, mind.
That's an inference you've drawn from nowhere.

And yet here we are. No adamant denials yet.

Abrams too? The Iraqi military must be a logistical nightmare.

I didn't see a point in "adamantly denying" it because... well... I didn't see a point in it.

I do not believe Iraq to be a "US puppet", but it does appear to have been neutered compared to previous iterations in its US-led reform. Not for any NWO gains or other sockpuppetry, just historical reasons and whatever the US wants out of the Middle East as a region in the next few decades.

I would not be surprised if, like a lot of other Arab armies, they contract support from the seller.
