Just don't post the image on IRC. There are people here who want to see it.

The point of RAVEN is to mount large calibre weaponry on very light vehicles. So if your goal is to mount a 15cm piece on a 30ton or so platform, then sure whatever floats your boat.

Otherwise, I wouldn't bother really. You can mount normal 15cm+ class guns on tanks of 50+ tons (the Russians already built prototypes - the Object 292 and the more famous Object 195/T-95)

Ja, my main MBT right now clocks in at 52 tons and mounts a 157mm. I've been running some tests though on the gun calcs NV and TKP posted previously, and to achieve the desired perforation and higher, I'm getting pretty close to the safe limit for recoil force. While its not necessary, RAVEN I can see helping to greatly reduce the recoil felt, so I can probably employ a longer barrel (currently L/45) and some more powerful rounds.

High performance brakes can reduce about 40% of recoil energy.

the pink panzer will set you free

The MDI-A4 Divine Tiger is the most successful product from Maverick Defense Industries. The first incarnations of the Divine Tiger were developed and, for a time, produced in secret before the Fascists took over, as part of an arrangement the Revolutionary Earth Fascist Movement made with the "Big Three" defense contractors (MDI, Geist, and Emorden). Maverick was tasked with providing a uniform, cutting-edge tank force for the soon-to-be-established Federal Army. The MDI-A4 version is the latest in a series of upgrades which have collectively been considered a complete redesign. It was designed to excel in urban combat and "vehicular close quarters," which explains the short length of the cannon and emphasis on missile capabilities.

The Divine Tiger's primary armament is a modern high-pressure 152mm gun/missile system, which, given the technology available today, gives the Divine Tiger a massive array of different munitions and attack forms. The on-board fire control system allows for the gunner to cycle through thermal signatures (i.e. other vehicles) for automatic aiming, though manual aiming via side-stick or yoke is still present, with automatic aiming being purely an augmentation, not a replacement. The FCS also enables the gunner to have the cannon automatically aim at targets designated by friendly forces by way of laser designator. Laser designators also can play a key role in the application of missiles launched from the DT. The DT's secondary armament is typically a 20mm autocannon, though a good number (dubbed Hens by GWO troops) are equipped with .50BMG coaxial machine guns. Tertiary (as in, the commander's gun) armament is a Browning M2 .50BMG heavy machine gun, either on an electronic mount or with a ballistic shielding system surrounding the hatch. There is also room for a fourth machine gun, as the DT can carry an optional fourth crew member for in-field maintenance or as a reserve man in the event that one of the crew is incapacitated. This fourth gun vaires; it can range from an M-MG42 to an HK GMG to a TOW. The commander of the vehicle is also able to designate a target for the gunner through his own console.

There is a large variety of missiles that the Divine Tiger can carry, with variations in guidance, warhead, and purpose. Not all are carried at once; the loadout of a unit is changed based on mission requirements. One of the most commonly carried missiles is a 152mm tank-launched top-attack missile, with three main variants: one designed for anti-tank purposes (obviously), one as an airburst anti-personnel munition, and one as a cluster bomb for dispatching mechanized infantry detachments. These missiles can be set to follow a laser from friendly forces. The Divine Tiger is also capable of firing a 152mm version of the SADARM shell to assist in detecting and eliminating hostile vehicles outside of direct fire range.

The DT is also equipped with what is called the "Infantry Denial System," which exists to protect the tank from extremely close infantrymen, given the urban nature of the tank. The general workings of it feature grenade launchers positioned to give a 360 degree field of fire, with the crew able to designate the range. As said before, this is designed to prevent the tank from being mobbed by hostile infantry. Obviously, the IDS is not to be used to its full capabilities if the DT is supported by friendly infantry. The IDS is also used by the tank to create smokescreens by firing smoke shells.

Armor is modular on the Divine Tiger. The DT was designed to have almost all of its armor easily removed by engineer units, thus allowing for easier and cheaper maintenance and modularity. The standard Army package (and it should be noted that the Army makes the most use of these) makes the Divine Tiger weigh 85 tons, with the composition including Chobham-Dorchester composite armor, depleted uranium mesh, and a DYNEEMA spall liner. The DT comes equipped with a halon fire suppression system and blowout panels. A pressurized CRBN system exists for operating in contaminated areas. Newer Divine Tigers are being built with automated active protection systems, and operations are underway to equip the GWO's current tanks with them. Certain tanks that are deemed more important (i.e. commanding tanks, specialized equipment tanks), or tanks about to go into an area with an even higher danger than usual, are also equipped with a complete ERA suite.

The DT's communications systems are designed to work with the GWO's BattleNet (specifically TAC-COM) battle management and networking system, displaying GPS, notes from command, IFF (identification, friend or foe) to prevent blue-on-blue incidents, live satellite uplink, remote vehicle slaver, and, of course, direct contact with other units. Two phones, located on either port or starboard side of the vehicle, allow for nearby friendly infantry to communicate with the crew inside. Grab-ons are present to allow for infantry to ride safely on the outside of the tank.

It's a rather standard cost-little-object NS tank (not quite cost no object). I just decided though that if I were going to price it, I'd try to price it more realistically than a lot of the higher-tech tanks that have lower price tags. This is actually the reduced price; it started at $18 million but I felt that was a bit high, and now $16 is the lowest I figure I can get away with.

Advice wanted to build up armoured forces

Postby The Tory Islands » Sun Jan 19, 2014 3:04 am

OOC:

Hi. I am relatively new here. I would like to know what sort of armour I should get for my armed forces. While I have come up with a rather decent inventory for my naval and air forces, I am a bit of a newbie (okay, n00b) as regards tanks and stuff. Suggestions are welcome.

My defence budget is around NS$ 770 billion. My Army has 1.2 million men active, and 1.9 million as reserves.

Thanks.

I think 16 is basically reasonable.

Well, what do you need? If you are islands, then tanks won't necessarily be that important. Do you plan on using them offensively much? What type of terrain do you have?

@ Anemos
You might want to link to this instead for the M.10, since its supposed to be a series with the original model using in-hull ammunition storage, which ICly led to quite a number of crews getting blown up upon penetration of the vehicle.
