Good.
The reason I'm asking was because of my plan of creating modern tankettes, five or six tonnes heavier than their WW2 counterparts, with more armor to protect the crew and components.
Being capable of surviving 30mm fire is looking at the 15-20t range.
32mm at 500m is actually the penetration of the 14.5mm cartridge - .50BMG is actually only around 20mm penetration at the same range. Beyond ~50mm of protection, you're looking at quite a heavy vehicle.

Yytuskia wrote:Mostly because I chose the MG34 because it's cheap for my nation to design, and we have made decent updates to it, fixing most of its problems, and with the no .50 or .40, is because I honestly forgot about them and Russian 14.5 are both antipersonnel and antitank rounds. Eh.

- Add bayonet lug
- Keep the rotating bolt
- Add a proper fire selector and trigger
- Stamp everything
- New barrel shroud that works like the one from the MG42
- Increase recoil length to decrease the ROF

Fair enough. For my design, (We shall name him... 'MG34 Varient 98'!) I probably won't add the bayonet lug, or the shroud. It'll just have a water cooling jacket around it; but it'll be small, around the size of the 42's shroud. Rotating bolt is best bolt, and fire selector will remain the same. My original MG already has a 1,200RpM, so I'll bring it done to 900 or so, and it'll be all stamped urvrythang.

So it's pretty much a sIG 33 and Grille, then? But wasn't the Grille just a stopgap measure meant to put the sIG 33 on tracks in the absence of a heavier self-propelled alternative? It never struck me as being a particularly technically impressive vehicle.
I mean, calling a comparatively short-barreled weapon with a maximum range under 5km your 'best artillery' strikes me as incredibly optimistic at best.

It's like a WWII vintage howitzer with a smaller working space, fully internalised recoil mechanism, shorter recoil length, no muzzle brake, no fume extractor and yet an enclosed turret with a bigger gun. You've got a gun that looks to be the same size as the ML-20S on the ISU-152 with half the working space, no muzzle brake and a more unstable mounting.
Abandon ship?

Gun's too long, chassis is too heavy, and the whole set-up looks a little bulky. If I can bring myself to do it I'll stretch out the Anemarder (working name) and try to mount a 155mm turret on that - putting a howitzer on a heavy tank chassis was a bad idea in the first place...
