Alvis Saxon/humber flying pig is pretty much what you want or pretty much any of the simialr armoured trucks/minibuses out there.

if you do a google image search for "internal secruity vehicle" you'll find lots of examples.

I'm thinking of fielding the M1117 in small numbers as a recon vehicle, MRAP and so on. Or would the Polish BRDM-2 do well in that role as it's cheaper?

Both the M1117 and BRDM-2 have limited passenger carrying capacity at best, so I wouldn't advise using them for anything other than lightweight recon or fire support.

From what I understand at least decent troop carrying capacity is one of your requirements, is it not?

That would explain quite quickly why it looks as it does. It's still used, widely, in Northern Ireland.

Those "ugly" side panels are probably some kind of armour or blast shielding.
And since, you know, it survived the troubles, its "role" is keeping people alive, or otherwise not beaten by an angry Irish mob.

To be honest, I find garden-variety SWAT lodrag operator-mobiles to be overweight, most probably grossly overpriced garbage tins. Being built up from commercial chassis instead of purpose-designed doesn't help a lot either. I used to like them a long time ago, but now I see them for what they really are.

..or you could always just go no-frills with it and use BTRs.

It's probably just some sort of spaced armor, no way it's solid armor. It wouldn't last very long without some serious structural reinforcements to hold all that extra weight. Which, come to think about it, the Tangis should actually already have some of since they're armored. This got me thinking, I'll go check and get back to you.

EDIT: Ah, I remembered correctly

The use a drogue bomb which damaged the roof of one vehicle during rioting at Dawson Street in Belfast led to the developing of the 'Dawson' roof. The crew of the landrover were saved from serious injury as they had packed riot shields using ropes above their heads forming a second skin. The roofs now effectively were designed with a second steel roof mounted over the first and works similar to spaced armour, detonating the IED before it struck the main armoured roof. Vehicles fitted with the Dawson roof were easily identified due to its large, angular appearance.
Similar IEDs were fitted with small drogues on the rear, so they could be thrown horizontally to strike the side of a Tangi thus circumventing the additional roof armour. The RUC responded to this with a similar measure to the Dawson roof, fitting a plate of ballistic steel several inches from the hull to detonate the bomb before it struck the main armoured body. In this final form, with the Dawson roof and hardened side armour, the Tangi is seen on the streets of Northern Ireland today.

But it still looks horrendous. If you're gonna go with it you could at least make the entire sides flush with said spaced armor.

As far as I can tell you just won't ever find out what the actual Chinese designation is, if there is one at all.

I think the closest you'll get is the USMC's Digital woodland MARPAT.

For what you want it to do, no.

You could also try BPM-97. I like to think of it as a modern BTR-40 / BTR-152.



As previously stated, BRDM-2 lacks a decent troop carrying capability. If I were you and I decided to go the (ex) Soviet route, I'd probably get BPM-97s with BTR-80 reserved for when SreallyHTF

are you sure you need mraps.

Not wide spread, I mean for like limited use. Maybe fifty to a hundred would be bought at best for special police and military units. My puppet nation won't be poor, but it sure as hell ain't rich. The issue is, it's got a major crime problem in it's version of the "Favelas". There's so much of a divide between that fourth of the country and the rest of Destinado Tierra that you might as well call it a confederate state. It would end up like the Afghani insurgency but near all public support would be in favor of the government as long as they play their cards right.

EDIT: This "Insurgency" is yet to be IC'ly assessed or handled, although it IC'ly sprung up around a decade ago after a major war. However it won't be long before the need for MRAP's is realized, but with public support [Which will come once the government asserts their dominance] that need may not be as urgent.

Looking for something really basic and cheap, with the best MRAP record out there, I'd recommend Casspir.
