While personally I don't think it's a good thing, private companies are slowly taking over space exploration.


Yes, in the US and Russia (both of which have massive debt and declining space programs).

China, India, Japan, and ESA have very successful space programs that are either entirely or almost entirely governmental.

If we are discoutning all bankrupt countries, we can get remove the ESA from our political calculations. And there are indicators that the Chinese and Russian budgets are way over sustainable levels.
