System of Measurement Act
Author: Ainin [TR] | Urgency: Medium | Sponsors: Free South Califas [C], New Zepuha [CMP], Geilinor [LD], Slazliyka [C], Liberated Counties [CFE], Jetan [NCP], Pragia [CFE], Great Nepal [CFE]
The Senate of Aurentina,
Noting the currently-used British Imperial System is arbitrary and absurd,
Lauding the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for declaring the International System of Units (or metric system) the international standard,
Acknowledging that the Imperial System is in need of dire replacement in Aurentina,
However realizing that a sudden switch to the International System of Units may cause unintended consequences, including but not limited to financial losses, incidents involving motor vehicles and dangerous incorrect chemical mixtures,
Section I - On Government Usage
a) All persons employed by all ministries, departments, organs and corporations belonging to the Aurentine, provincial, regional or municipal governments must cease usage of the imperial system in official documentation.
b) All signalization under public administration must be converted to the metric system by 2017.
c) Any civil servant failing to comply with these regulations thrice may be terminated at supervisor's discretion starting from January 1st, 2017.
d) The Ministry of Research and Astronomy is tasked with overseeing the Aurentine public sector's transfer to the ISU.
e) All licensed education facilities must use and teach the International System of Units (ISU) as predominant system of measurement.
Section II - On Private Usage
a) Shops, restaurants and other enterprises destined for public use are to switch to the metric system by 2023 or face a fine of $2,000.
b) All employees whose primary job involves contact with the customer have to be able to give a basic measurement of weight, volume and length.
c) Any company directly dealing with persons or corporations in the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Kingdom of Spain, Canada, the United Mexican States, the Republic of Liberia or the Union of Burma are exempt from the previous clause.
d) The Ministry of Commerce shall be tasked with overseeing the Aurentine private sector's transfer to the ISU.
e) Establishments serving alcohol are exempt from clauses (a) and (b).
Section III - The International System of Units
- Weight: The kilogramme (kg), and all derivatives thereof
- Length: The metre (m), and all derivatives thereof
- Temperature: The kelvin, and all derivatives thereof
- Time: The second, and all derivatives thereof
The following are to be classified as metric as well for the purpose of this law:
- Temperature: The degree Centigrade (Celsius), and all derivatives thereof
- Voltage: The volt, and all derivatives thereof
- Resistance: The ohm, and all derivatives thereof
- Frequency: The hertz, and all derivatives thereof
All categories not named by this list are unregulated by this legislation.
Hereby passes the System of Measurement Act.

Opposed. UC and EFEA are fine for what they are, but come later because they were made after perfectly serviceable alternatives had already been drafted, edited across the aisle and patiently put through queue. I don't see why these two should jump into GSA with the bills we've been waiting for. I might reconsider this if the relevant GSA bills fail, but I haven't looked into the specifics of those closely yet.Motion to omnibus 17 (universal credit) and 23 (education framework act) into 3 (government services act) (four seconds)
FifthedMotion to omnibus 10 (common wealth) and 12 (non proliferation) into the International treaties act (new omnibus, will take common wealth's place) (four seconds)
Opposed. I think that's unfair; the Senate drafted LRA with its long-term political balance in mind and tried to strike a fair compromise respecting the truth, ie scientific returns about the causes and solutions of drug addiction, and the effects of drug prohibition. I note that not only are families broken up by prohibition and lives ruined within Aurentina, it contributes to the oppression of coca producers in the Andes, who make a vital leaf-based product (not cocaine as such) for large populations to live in and visit the altitude yet are targeted as if terrorists. NDSA should wait until after LRA gets its day at vote, which we waited patiently for.Motion to omnibus 22 (national drug safety act) into 7 (Legality and restrictions act) (there will be two drug proposals in the new omnibus, it allows us to pick between them) (four seconds)
FifthedMotion to omnibus 15 (First lla amendment) and 16 (first Republican executive amendment) into 8 (senate procedures act) (four seconds)
Opposed, and suspicious of your calling 11 "basic utilities act" and then "basic utilities" when its name is Basic Utilities Privitisation Act. The omnibus name is misleading, as the latter two are standard government stuff, while BUPA is a property grab justified by ideology. (Yep, I know what you'll say, but there's no proof thatmotion to omnibus 11 (basic utilities act), 13 (railways act), and 14 (food vendor act) into the Economy oversight act (new omnibus, will take basic utilities place) (three second)
