Postby Zwangzug » Sat Jan 22, 2022 10:01 am

(OOC: For bonus purposes/proper attribution, this is a collaborative RP with South Newlandia. I wrote Myra's dialogue, SNL wrote Brandon's!)

"Welcome to the Stelladome! Home of the Cup of Harmony 33 final between Candelaria And Marquez and Kereca, the Eagles' Cup 12 final between Nephara and Turori, and today–less consequential but still avidly anticipated–the World Cup qualifying match between Zwangzug and South Newlandia. I'm Myra Cleegers."

“And I’m Brandon van Simonsen, welcome to the cast!”

"Both teams won their first five matches before being held to draws last time out–South Newlandia with Yuezhou, Zwangzug with Gatchingerrak Union. Brandon, do we expect any changes from Robert Wolverine's side?"

“After conceding three last time out, the most they did so far in qualifying, I could imagine a defensive exchange of some kind. It seems that Wolverine has made one change to the defense, with Philip Gurero in there instead of Roman Rios, with Barker moving over to the king- to the right defensive side. Otherwise, it seems like he’s sticking to his guns, with Trischuk - Roy, Anderson, Gurero, Barker - Stuart, Green, Young, Levy - Irving, Gomez as his setup for his pieces. Myra, what do you think about the Zwangzugian formation today, are you expecting any shuffling of pieces?”

"I didn't know you had any guns in South Newlandia! Um, Aimee Ginoud-Sachs is resting after a muscle strain during the Gatchingerrak Union match, so we'll see Corey Richardson starting in midfield. Given the Elephants' known struggles at the right-back position, perhaps we'll see Zwangzug try to align their attack against that weakness."

“Quite possible, at least in theory. Filip Barker is a solid player, and despite playing Center-Back for the Cranequin Wanderers, he’s got experience playing at the right side for the Elephants, so he’s a very versatile player capable of moving in lots of directions. What tactics do you think the Zwangzugians will be up to beyond that?”

"Kate DiMarini will likely have seen the last match as an opportunity squandered, and with head-to-head being the first tiebreaker, you have to think she'll be trying to push for a result at home so Zwangzug can afford to play for the draw next time around. So I'd be looking to see some creative midfield play, hopefully staying disciplined and trying to wear down the South Newlandian defense."

“Absolutely, being down in material would be a significant disadvantage here. The Elephants will be trying their best to keep the Zwangzugian attack in check, as a draw would be quite a decent result here, considering this is the game with the Zwangzugians playing white.”

"Fortunately, we have ninety minutes plus stoppage time to make the most of; Zwangzugians tend to struggle with zeitnot and crumble in blitz mode."

“Yeah, lots of time to think for both sides. The South Newlandian side will surely try to put the Zwangzugians under pressure with counter-attacks, probably centered around Reid Gomez, the young star on the board for the Elephants. He’s already scored eight goals so far, and he sure is hungry for more.”

"It'll be interesting to see if Zwangzug is able to deploy Esther Axelrod-Conway to effect. We know she's capable of singlehandedly dominating a match like she did against Southwest Eastnorth, and the way she's been used in the S-FPL is brutal; Farf clubs don't hesitate to hold off from aggressive trades and violent skirmishes. But the national team may be inclined to give her a more defensive role, in the first half at least."

“She’ll be battling against Marcus Young, who is basically an equal exchange in everything you just mentioned. Where do you see the biggest weakness in the Zwangzugian setup?”

"While it's not as drastic as the Elephants' selection issues, I don't think Gannett and Sibal have been a very effective partnership so far this cycle; Sibal is on the older side, and Gannett can occasionally overlook the fundamentals."

“It’s what they always say, relative piece value depends on how those pieces are able to work together.”

"Very true, Brandon. The Elephants are more attacking-minded than they've been in past cycles, but I can see them wanting to back off after the Yuezhou match. At the risk of being a homer, I'll go ahead and predict a 1-0 to the home side."

“I have to agree, despite South Newlandia having the better ranking at the moment, the Zwangzugians are definitely the favorite today, especially considering they have the advantage of making the first move with the fans at their backs. I do think the Zwangzugians will be able to exploit the Elephants’ weaknesses effectively, but I can also imagine Irving and Gomez wreaking havoc up front, so I’ll be going with a narrow 4-3 win for the team in white and black.”

—

(Halftime)

"Well, Brandon, it's been pretty much giuoco pianissimo through the first forty-five minutes–not to be confused with the quiet musicians of Cugio District, although I hear they're doing well at the Mountain Games. But while Valerie Waugh has blundered away several opportunities from the midfield, Fedya Troy-Vee has done just enough to keep the Elephants from setting up a long-term attack."

“No side has been able to gain a significant advantage so far. We’ve seen a couple of decent attacking moves, but both formations have been very solid, and have been able to defend against much so far. So, we’re all square, 0-0.”

"It looks like DiMarini wants to capture towards the center, trading off Nancy Puyo-Sachar–who's been pretty ineffective on the wings–for Cixin Nguyen. Maybe he can provide a little more solidity in linking up with the attack."

“To defend this, Wolverine is making a defensive retreat, with the slightly hobbled Dhruv Roy being taken off for Archer Nguyen. Clearly, Wolverine has been able to predict the move of DiMarini, and plans to fight Nguyen with Nguyen.”

"Perhaps they'll be able to work around each other and make space, but the way this game has gone so far, I wouldn't be surprised if they turned into a pair of stopped pawns in the same file."

“That seems likely to me. Wolverine has closed off the position, and with Zwangzug running out of time, it seems to me like he’s playing for a draw, or hoping for Zwangzug to overextend and make a critical blunder for Wolverine to exploit.”

"Well, they say an Elephant never forgets their strategy. As for Zwangzug…I guess we don't have a nickname. I guess a long time ago we used to be the Peons, like Pawns, but not quite. Maybe that needs to make a comeback."

“That could be one pawn in a big battle to World Cup glory.”

—

(Postgame)

"The upshot of an O-O is that the king is safe behind his rooks, and you can expect a straightforward, slow development in the coming moves. That might be the takeaway from this scoreless draw; no risky gambles from either side, just solid defensive play."

“Both teams remain undefeated, and while the Elephants remain on top of the table, the Zwangzugian team will still have good chances, seeing as both are tied on points.”

"Credit to Tommy Anderson and Filip Barker for remaining in control and not flipping the table. Their focus and execution helped the Elephants close it down and not squander the draw."

“They remained calm under pressure, and were able to keep everything defended from the Zwangzugian pieces, a great performance in a very difficult game.”

"Yep, both sides will have plenty to annotate and review in preparation for the rematch at the Stadium of Friendship."

“With the colors flipped, I’m sure there will be a lot riding on the final matchday. I would not be surprised if the direct qualification spot was up for grabs there.”

"The Elephants currently have a superior goal differential, by five. You can make all the heuristic estimates about 'that's maybe a rook's worth of value,' but by the time the final matchday rolls around, we'll have a much better sense of what that advantage is actually worth."

“Of course, there’ll probably be another upset that will ruin our plans like a fork in a garbage disposal or in a knight endgame.”

"Thanks for those mental images, Brandon. Halfway through qualifying, it looks like the best defenses around the world belong to the White Myna of Pemecutan, a Darkmania side who knows how to get results with the black pieces, and Zwangzug's stripes. It just goes to show you never know who's going to be strong at the back."

“And despite that, none of these teams are at the top of their respective groups. Defense may sometimes win you championships, but you will occasionally need to attack, too; I’m sure Petrosian can tell you all about that.”

"Petrosian? I think he's the vice-captain of Sannyamathland, let's call him up and ask him!"

“Maybe I’m misremembering, anyway. Who do you think was the queen on the board today, who was the Most Valuable Player?”

"For the home side, I would say Lissa Crain–she didn't make any highlight-reel tackles, but did her job and secured the defense to pick up at least the half-point. For the Elephants, while Trischuk was certainly a strong leader as well, he wasn't really challenged by Waugh, so I have to give Anderson the nod."

“Definitely have to agree there, Anderson was making clutch tackles left and right, jumping between squares, wherever he was needed most. Fedya Troy-Vee deserves a mention too, of course.”

"Zwangzug have been fortunate that Troy-Vee burst into the starting lineup so early. He might be around for a while, so Pimbura and Igreli could learn a lot from him before they promote someday."

“Could be the crucial piece to deliver checkmate.”

"But then again, Zwangzugians aren't keen on resigning even when it would save effort and frustration, so we'd better hope he doesn't push himself too far."

“Yeah, overextension can lead to weaknesses that can be exploited. Goalkeepers belong at the back of the formation, anyway.”

"Always good to review those fundamentals, Brandon."

“(laughing)”

"The captains have signed the scorecard and handed it off to the ref, so that about does it from us. From Spenson, I've been Myra Cleegers."

“And I’m hopefully continuing to be Brandon van Simonsen, thank you for tuning in!”

A Freefall With Benefits

Postby Kimi-Suomi » Sat Jan 22, 2022 10:43 am

Everyone knew that this WCQ period would be all about survival above all. But these two games certainly told a lot of tales when it comes to football in Kimi-Suomi.

We don't need to talk about Audioslavia, but kinda have to. Not many teams can go over there in what is now Anaia and get points and Rohan Cammers would show no mercy to Huuhkajat at all in this one - as expected by most of us. The Bulls would charge through us for the first 70 minutes and nobody could blame their team at all - we're ranked #150, they're considered of the elite of the sport, so what did anyone expect? Antoine Letexier tore us to shreds with a first-half hattrick of pure class while the 2nd half saw both Koenraad Rijsbergen and Eurico Da Rosa make their impacts to make it 5-0. We showed some fight towards the end a header from Kimi Airo would at least give us a goal to take back to AO, but today certainly wasn't our day.

Our first half would end back in Pesä as the Lady Revolutionaries of Abanhfleft came to town, Ginny Katesmar's side looking to do well in her final cycle as Manager of this intimidating unit. This game would be one of many twists and turns, starting with Anne Hintz scoring within the first 5 minutes of the match before the Lady Revs took control via pure might with all 4 of Kelly McGinnis, Prudence Woodward, Elene Liner and Amelie Rusev all making it look easy to make it 4-1 with about 20 minutes to go. All looked lost but when Annina Tuominen came on, everything seemed to change. The 22-year-old was instrumental to an incredible home-side comeback, assisting both of Jyrki Bottas' strikes in the 75th and 82nd before heading home herself in the 92nd minute to send the roof off the join and to secure another unlikely point in this campaign.

This team certainly has fight in it and 7 points after 7 games certainly isn't too bad at all. The second half kicks off at home to Dispertag and away in Rhubarbton, with a new mission in mind for now: get as many points as possible, with the aim of impressing the eventual hosts of the upcoming Cup of Harmony. NOSTA KUIN HUUHKAJAT!

A tough loss against a determined opponent, with both teams feeling better than their records and both seeking their first wins after a series of losses and draws. Oberour Ar Moro brought a tough offense against the Macaricas' A-team, beating down the defense and creating too many chances for Antunes and the centerbacks to deny them all.

Tikariot-based striker Mauranghas opened the scoring on the day with a straightforward tap-in off a well-placed cross by his club teammate de Linge, coming on the end of several consecutive chances from Oberour Ar Moro. Another Tikariot-based forward would be involved in the equalizer as young Cleto Silveira collided with Mathieux Helleu in the box. The contact appeared incidental at first blush, but Silveira remained down, and the VAR identified a nasty, though possibly unintentional, swipe at his ankles by Helleu. Helleu received a yellow card despite the Azurean screaming for a red, Montenegro converted the resulting penalty, and Silveira came off, replaced by Fulvio Dantas.

Oberour Ar Moro would retake the lead in first-half stoppage time off a corner conceded by Adao Moniz, whose mistakes are sure to cost him his starting spot if he doesn't find a way to tighten up. Down by one at halftime, the Azureans looked to open the game up and get their fullbacks involved in the attack, and they indeed dominated possession for the first twenty or so minutes of the second half. This stint culminated in a signature coast-to-coast run by Amilcar Branco, ending in a pacey shot across the mouth of goal.

With the teams on level terms again, there was no interest from either side in playing for a draw. Oberour Ar Moro redoubled their attack, eventually finding the back of the net close to the end of regulation, and the Azureans had no answer before the final whistle.
Brenecia 1-1 Cabo Azure

An impressive draw against a first-rate side, but one which does little to effect either Cabo Azure's standing at the bottom of Group 17 or Brenecia's at the top.

Brenecia's first goal was routine, perhaps expected; a simple overloading of the defenders in the box where it was just a matter of finding the open man, who in this case happened to be Danand Tristam. What wasn't expected was that the 1-0 scoreline would hold for the rest of the first half, as both teams sought unsuccessfully to break down their opponents' defense. For once this qualifying cycle, the Macaricas understood the assignment, and played compact defense while counterattack with enough zeal to keep the Brenecians from committing too completely to the attack.

The equalizer would come late in the second half, when the commentators had already begun to discuss man of the match and each side's next fixture. Ademar Carrico slipped a cross behind Brenecian captain Roscommon, finding Montenegro unexpectedly free and in space. In isolation, Montenegro's goal seems to be a routine one-touch shot, but in the context of the match, it came so completely against the run of play that it took a moment for the announcers and the fans to catch up.
It is hard to say which side was more shocked going into their locker rooms at 1-1.

Requiem for a Queen, pt 3
The town of Lagostim is a sleepy burg set deep in the heart of the second-largest Azurean island of Dulce Muerte. Home to just over thirty thousand people, it is best known as the terminus of Cabo Azure’s only railroad, which runs south to the coastal town of Braga, where crops are loaded onto container ships bound elsewhere in Cabo Azure and overseas. Other attractions include Estadio Lagostim, home of the popular local football team, as well as the only movie theater, bowling alley, and shopping mall on the island.

When Dr. Abby Fonseca and her husband Luis arrived at Lagostim in July 1983, she was already six months pregnant with their first child, yet had to climb three flights of stairs to their room at the Hotel Real, because it lacked an elevator. She and Luis were scheduled to speak at the constitutional convention that had been called by the Gang of Seven at the request of various opposition groups. The groups could not agree on a location, with the Royalists and the Republicans favoring Portelo and Sao Simone, respectively, and so the Gang had chosen the Lagostim as a neutral point.

The selection of Lagostim presented several problems for the conventions’ participants. First was the logistics of getting there when the island had no airport and its main connection to the outside world was a once-daily ferry to Sao Simone. Upon arriving on the ferry, travelers would have to purchase tickets on the irregular passenger train inland to Lagostim, which forced many would-be delegates to stay another night before proceeding to their destination.

The next problem was the lack of reliable communication from Lagostim to the rest of the islands. In the days before Joaquin Sequeira made his fortune providing cellular service to the Azurean islands, the primary method of communication with the “mainland” was via radio and radioteletype. These methods were low in bandwidth, had few nodes, and lagged considerably compared to the regular telephone service which ran between Portelo and Sao Simone. It was accurately said in those days that it was easier to get a message to Brinemouth in Nephara or Centralis in Electrum than to Lagostim.

The lack of connection, coupled with the relative isolation of the Republican, Royalist, and government representatives in Lagostim, meant that neither group of negotiators felt comfortable making the type of compromises necessary to create a national constitution from whole cloth. Negotiations stagnated as both sides attempted to reach their leadership with mixed results. The government representation was quick to accept the stalemate and call an end to the talks, with a promise of returning to the table at an indeterminate date in the future.

Postby Sarzonia » Sat Jan 22, 2022 1:07 pm

The Zoom conference between Nathan Hanifer and the technical director for the Sarzonian national football team was expected, of course.

It was the halfway point in World Cup 90 qualifying. The Stars were still in the race for a playoff berth to contend for a spot in the proper. They'd just wrapped up a two-match stretch that included an impressive 4-1 home victory over Dod Rava but also included a 4-2 away defeat to Magnecia, three points that Sarzonia simply could not afford to lose.

The results left the Stars on nine points with a 3-0-4 record. More to the point, and more to the point behind the conversation with Hanifer's boss, was the team's defensive struggles. Sure, Sarzonia scored 19 goals, a figure eclipsed only by The Holy Empire and Mytanija, but they also conceded 19 goals. That latter figure was level with bottom-of-table Dod Rava, a team Hanifer noted that just earned its first victory in qualifying with a 2-0 win over Eraman.

But again, the focus was on the Stars defence and why a team of Sarzonia's calibre conceded so many goals. Losing to The Holy Empire by allowing them three goals was one thing. A loss against Mytanija would have been understandable since they're currently occupying the playoff spot and would be competing for a spot in the proper if qualifying ended right now. But the loss to Magnecia, coupled with conceding five goals to Pyazhnaya of all teams were both inexcusable, as they cost Sarzonia valuable points in the Group 18 table they could ill afford to allow to slip from their grasp.

"Nathan, you absolutely have to do something about that defence," technical director Chris Parsons intoned ominously, his voice punctuated with a glower that made clear that the team's allowing 19 goals was unacceptable.

"What would you have me do, Chris?" Hanifer asked. "The way this team has been constructed is the way this team has been constructed. I can't exactly change tactics in midqualifying. We can't suddenly start playing like the next incarnation of Rejistania after playing attack-minded football." Nor can the Stars suddenly try to revert to the total football on steroids approach we used previously, he thought.

"I don't give a fuck what system you employ," Parsons said. "The system doesn't fucking matter. What matters is this team hasn't shown the attitude it needs for the system you're utilising." That was a point Hanifer couldn't really argue. After all, it was something Hanifer addressed in training every day. And yet, the Stars continued to cough up goals at an obscene rate. And when their defence was finally on point, as it was against Eraman, the offence couldn't keep up. It was the mark of a team that was snakebitten. Or, perhaps more accurately, Margaret-bitten.

A few hours after the meeting, Hanifer was sitting in his office at the team's headquarters still steaming over what Parsons delivered. It stopped short of being a win or your fired ultimatum. But it left no doubt that Hanifer's leash was getting shorter. He pulled out the desk drawer to his right and reached inside for the contents. When he pulled out his intended object, he looked for the other items.

And that was how yet another rubber chicken "squawked" its last.

*****************************************************************************************

Holly Cambrio sat down with Clayton Wilson as the Sarzonian team captain chose to deliver what amounted to a progress report for each player on the team with Hanifer's blessing. He'd sat with Hanifer as the two discussed the team's performance by overall picture (one that saw Sarzonia fourth from eight teams in Group 18 three points behind Mytanija for the playoff berth from the group. However, the Stars were also just four points clear of a Dod Rava side that had only just earned their first victory of qualifying after two draws and four defeats, one of the latter at Dave Wilson Stadium in Woodstock to the Stars.

Any good feelings that may have emanated from Sarzonia's 4-1 victory over Dod Rava, one that included two goals scored by Cambrio and one by Jake Campos, along with a free kick goal by Wilson himself, had long since vanished after Magnecia held serve at their home pitch with a 4-2 victory that allowed them to leapfrog the Stars into third position.

Wilson gave his verdict of Cambrio's footballing skill. He and the coaching staff were very high on her, and the combination of her and Campos was very effective football-wise. Nineteen goals scored on offence was certainly nothing to sneeze at. For a forward, defence wasn't her main responsibility, and Wilson was well aware of that and addressed that aspect accordingly.

What he wanted to address with Cambrio, however, had nothing to do with her on-pitch exploits, be they with the lights on and in the flow of a match or on the practice fields. This had to do with her bailing on a team outing she'd agreed to.

"Holly," he said, "look, we're concerned for you," Wilson said. He looked up at her for a moment, staring intently into her eyes to the point where Cambrio began to feel uncomfortable.

"Do you have anxiety?" Wilson asked. When Cambrio looked at him with an expression of "what did you say?" he clarified. "Do you have social anxiety?"

Cambrio didn't answer, but Wilson spotted the look of recognition in her eyes. She didn't need to answer verbally.

"I understand there's still a lot stigma about mental health," Wilson said. "I know the government's been working hard to combat it, but there's years of ingrained prejudices to fight. I get it. Holly, can you go talk to a therapist about it?"

"I tried talk therapy," Cambrio said. "It didn't work for me."

Wilson nodded. "I think some psychologists may be better about dealing with certain aspects of mental health than others," he said. "I found that to be true when I went to therapy a couple years ago."

"Wait, you went to therapy?" Cambrio asked as her eyes widened and she inched forward in her seat.

"Yeah," Wilson said. "I had problems when I first became captain. It took some doing before the team took me seriously as a captain and I was having trouble with it."

After a conversation that included more about both players' experiences with therapy, from the two or three therapists Wilson sought out before finding the right fit for him to Cambrio's less than successful venture, Wilson finally got her to agree to let him know if she couldn't make it to a team event, whether that reason involved a conflict in schedule or her anxiety getting the best of her.

Naked News Jeruselem's Princess Kate with relative Kate Dallas

P Kate:
Hello, this is Princess Kate for Naked News Jeruselem. I'm with Kate Dallas, yes she's a relative .. duh! She played with the Jeruselem World Cup team for the last few games. She's retired from playing but she's now working on her coaching career at Tel Aviv Sharks ... and yes we own that team as well. We're a big family, the royal family is small compared to the rest of the family.

Kate: Oh hi everyone
P Kate: So how are things going with new career?
Kate: Yes, well I have a lot to learn. Managing people isn't something that's easy. Everyone is different and some are more difficult than others to manage.
P Kate: So you have an appreciation for what Pekora Dancer's job
Kate: I'm not even doing half the stuff she has to do, I'm not going be one to be overly critical.
P Kate: Let's have a look at our last two rounds of the World Cup 90 qualification. Match day 6 and 7 weren't terribly kind to us at all.

Kate: Err, yeah. Not our best results but it is halfway so we have some time left.
P Kate: At home we draw 4-4 with Darmen and then lost 4-3 in The Gothanita Isles. 1 point of 6 is pretty not what we want.
Kate: A bit of disaster for those games but there's some positives. We're scoring goals but we have to work on defense even if we score less goals.

P Kate:
It's just a good thing our rivals are having mixed results as well.
Ochre Islands beat The Gothanita Isles 1-0 at home but then crashed to 2-1 loss in Pluvia and the Saxean Isles.
Mercedini beat Soldera 3-2 at home and then preceded to lose in Darmen 3-2.
Kyzhurkistan also won 3-2 against Pluvia and the Saxean Isles 3-2 at home and then got thrashed by Soldera 4-1 away.
Soldera lost to Mercedini 3-2 but then recovered with 4-1 home win over Pluvia and the Saxean.
Darmen are picking up their form with 4-4 draw with us away and then beating Mercedi 3-2 at home.
Pluvia and the Saxean Isles went down 3-2 to Kyzhurkistan but then took down leaders Ochre Islands 2-1 at home.
The Gothanita Isles lost another game and then beat us 4-3 at home.
So just from looking that those results, try picking the form team? Impossible

Kate: We're in very tight group where there's not much between 1st and 2nd last. Like 4 points?
P Kate: Yes 4 points between 1st and 7th and 6 between 1st and last. That is not very much at this stage.
Kate: It just means we're in an even group where there's not much difference between teams.
P Kate: The leader is Ochre Islands on 12 points but there's Mercedini, Kyzhurkistan and us on 11. Soldera on 10. Darmen has 8 and Pluvia and the Saxean Isles has 8. Last placed The Gothanita Isles has 6 which is not far off the top team still.
Kate: It means the top seeds aren't at their best and the others are competeting and taking advantage of their mistakes.

P Kate: Group 9 is so different for example. Nephara on 18, Quebec on 14 and yes Pekoland on 11. Last placed New Zhengguo has one point. Clear leaders and clear losers.
Kate: Groups 1 to 9 are lopsided, except ours Group 10 is just weird.
P Kate: Looking at just the top 4 of Group 10, which include us - how to do see our chances.
Kate: We're not finished, we've made way to many errors but others have tripped themselves over just as bad. Plus is we've got the best attack of all teams but we also have 2nd worst defense. Only Pluvia and the Saxean Isles has conceded more goals. But we've only lost two games, the draws hurt us worse since there's three draws.
P Kate: Pretty much a new rebuilt team from the last one though so it's like Peko is playing with complete different set of players

Kate: That's not an easy thing to do. When all the players from the last cup retired, you have to get new blood but they've never played together like this before until now.
P Kate: A much younger team with much less internationa experience too
Kate: Sometimes it takes one world cup to get the team ready for the one they do well, a loss of experienced players can impact results.
P Kate: Clearly we cannot repeat these results in the 2nd half
Kate: We can do a lot better, I think we can qualify if we stop those silly losses and win some of those draws.
P Kate: I agree we are clearly more capable and we're not just to playing to our capabilities.

Kate: 1 point off the leader, who weirdly loses and doesn't draw.
P Kate: Is it true, you had a stalker?
Kate: Oh yes, that yes. I don't know why. I'm not exactly you.
P Kate: I guess I'm lucky I have people following me around as protection. I am a royal.
Kate: Yes well they stuck an Apple Airtag on my car, I didn't realise for a while. So I stuck on a rat, which ran around the city to fuck them up. Must have confused them for a while.
P Kate: I got my trusty zapper, it destroys unwanted tracking devices.

Kate: So you taser them?
P Kate: YEAH
Kate: Maybe I should get one ...
P Kate: I haven't tasered anyone yet, but I won't hesitate either.
Kate: Oh yes, you're a Dragon Mum
P Kate: The royal family crest is three headed dragon, for a good reason. Well, I think that's all for now. I'll be reviewing games 1 to 7 with my friend Peko later.

Dave Pocklington was in a conversation with the station's sports director Clarissa Treadway regarding his segment evaluating the first half of World Cup qualifying for the Solderan national football team.

"Only two? Are you serious?"

"Correct. They're only two points out of first place," Treadway said. "They're in fifth place in the group, but they're only two points behind Ochre Islands. There's a logjam of three teams who are only one point back, then there's us."

Pocklington took another look at the Group 10 standings. Of course, Treadway was right as usual. Group 10 certainly wasn't the group of death, but it was a group that essentially saw everyone in the group still having a shot at advancing to at least a berth in the playoffs. Group 7 was also tightly-contested with seven of the eight teams being within three points of each other, but hapless Jeeves Land only had two points, so their chances of getting on a run were all but gone. In Group 10, The Gothanita Isles were bringing up the rear in the group, but had six points. Their point total was half that of first place Ochre Island's, but if they got hot at just the right time, they could cause some headaches for teams down the road.

The Gothanita Isles certainly weren't a Good Samaritans, as that team had yet to even record so much as a draw in a Group 6 that included the likes of Eura, Chromatika and Sargossa. Group 4 doormat Nagore only had one 20-2 draw, which they'd earned against Montaña Verde on Opening Day to their credit. Winnebogan only had one draw in Group 3 themselves. Rhubarbton had one draw in Group 19. The spelling-challenged Cheetahs and reptiles Coalison in Group 16, same deal. The Gothanita Isles still had a chance to be competitive.

As for Soldera, fifth place in an eight-team group wasn't great by any stretch of the imagination, but being only one point behind playoff position and two behind the group lead meant the Snakes still had a chance if they could somehow catch fire. And that was the tact Pocklington chose to take with his analysis of the Snakes and their first half.

He intended to talk about how the Snakes kept Kyzhurkistan from putting distance between themselves and Soldera in Group 7 with a full slate of seven matches remaining in qualifying. The Snakes got their first of three consecutive games at King Anthony Stadium started in style with their impressive 4-1 victory. Now they were facing off against a Pluvia and the Saxean Isles team they'd ransacked 7-3 away from home in the return leg in Branwen. Then they had the critical game looming against first place Ochre Islands, who'd defeated Soldera on the second matchday. That match was the second of two straight road games for Soldera, so the Snakes were happy to get a shot at Ochre Islands back home in what was now beginning to resemble home field advantage for Soldera's players. King Anthony Stadium could get really loud as Kyzhurkistan found out the hard way in Soldera's rout.

As for Pocklington's fellow analyst Jamie Bacon, he knew they would take a more pessimistic tack. While Pocklington would wax poetically about a Solderan offense that scored 18 goals in seven games, it would be Bacon's job to point out how the 13 tallies the Snakes coughed up, a middling figure in the group as the fourth highest goals allowed total, was still unacceptable despite the Snakes having the best goal differential of any team in Group 10. He'd talk about how the team's inexperience on the world's biggest stage left Soldera at .500, ignoring the fact that the team had two Copa Rushmoris and a Baptism of Fire Cup under their belts. The debate about the team's future and the interview with Snakes manager Norm Carricker was going to provide enough salt for 10,000 Kentucky Fried Chickens to open up across the realm.

Director Harvey Benson heard the telltale ping on his phone. "Thirty seconds!" he called out. He took a look at both Pocklington and Bacon and knew the fur was about to fly between the man who chose optimism and the non-binary co-host who chose a more negative approach.

Who needs Stranger Things when you've got this? Benson thought as he could feel the tension bubbling under the surface that was about to be aired throughout the realm.

"Fifteen seconds!" he called out, looking at his phone and seeing the Twii.tur post from the intern operating the station's social media. Isn't he of Dancougaran descent? he thought for a moment, but he knew he had a job to do that didn't involve scrutinizing the ancestry of an intern.

"And you're on in five, four, three, two," Benson said as he pointed to Pocklington."

"Good evening, Soldera, and welcome to your Snakes football report. I'm your host Dave Pocklington and this is my partner Jamie Bacon. We're here today to take a look back at the first half of World Cup qualifying for the Snakes and take a look at where we see the second half going for the United Kingdom's football program."

It's halftime in the qualifiers, and you know what that means: we've seen every matchup once, and we can extrapolate that into a full qualification table. Sure, you could simply double all stats as they are: goals scored, conceded, points... but we all know there's more under the hood.

Image

The table as Pythagoras would like to see it is the same as the actual table for Group 13, but there are a few corrections to look out for in the second half of the qualification campaign. The Dragonflies apparently are a point short of what they were cruising for with the GF/GA numbers, while Hispinas has 11 points versus 11 points expected and are still listed with a difference of '1' - your eyes aren't deceiving you. This is because the expected points are rounded up/down, while the difference is calculated from with all the decimals involved and then rounded up/down. Another important thing to mention is that the "Expected Points" column assumes there are 3 points to be gotten per game. Some games end in a draw, losing a point to the void forever, and screwing up the tables as well. Garifunya could/should have had six points by now, which still wouldn't help them in the standings but it'd be nice to double your points.

Image

The next step, of course, is to see which teams are the best (according to the GF/GA Pythagorean method) across the entire World Cup. Why do we keep doing this to ourselves? Anyhow, with the massive help of the statisticians from Poafmersia, we managed. And here it is! Pemecutan, with 17 scored and just 3 conceded (the Pythagorean method hinges on the GF-to-GA ratio, so unusually good defences with decent scoring are so high up here), is our mathematically best team at 2.85 points per game for 20 total expected points by this point in the WCQs. Behind them are four teams on 19 expected points: 7-0-0 Tumbra (who, our legal division makes us say, have not yet qualified for the World Cup), Pasarga, Zwangzug, and Ko-oren, all on the back of plenty of clean sheets. Pasarga are sort of the odd one out, but their goalscoring ability makes up for that.

Everyone with 15 or more projected points has been mentioned, and they're more or less the usual suspects. Pemecutan, Pasarga, and Eura are duped by Maggie as they say, as are Darkmania (just fell out of the picture). On the other hand, Graintfjall, Vdara, and Sargossa have been particularly lucky in how their points fell to them. Perhaps our Pythagorean Expectation could do with a little rebalancing to push the high scoring teams further up to make it more realistic - Nephara at 31 for and 13 against don't seem much worse than, say, a 13-4 Ko-oren (if not better!). Maybe we won't rebalance it - that's just how we feel about the advantage of a good defence over a good attack.

Image

This is the other side of the above table, the teams aren't expected to get a lot of points. The Good Samaritans should have one point and actually have zero in the table - getting this formula to grant you a single point after seven games is quite an achievement. Some of these are pretty well known: what are South Covello up to?? Lisander, Hayvnwilde, Savojarna, Bollonich, Natanians and Nosts, even Melbergia: what's going on? Is everything alright? Three of these have six points or over, so they're looking... not quite as dire in the actual standings, but it's still cause for concern.

Image

Then there's the final table of today. Sorted by 'Difference', this shows the biggest discrepancy between 'points expected' and 'actual points'. Pemecutan has been mentioned already, who are five points short of what they should/could have done, but New Zhengguo are equally cursed, only they are sitting on a draw where they weren't wrong to expect two wins. If you're complaining about how you're doing and you're on this list: keep on complaining, please: it's a big part of the WCQ experience. Happy swearing!

Of course, this table also shows the teams that Maggie blessed. In that case: you have no reason to complain, and will not have a reason to complain for at least five more cycles. By that point, your group mates will likely have forgotten your otherwordly luck and you're free to complain again. Happy swearing (in WCQ 95)!

(4-2-3-1) 1 - Finnan; 2 - Bravender, 18 - Shrine, 6 - Giltanan, 3 - Roscommon (c); 4 - Schofield (23 - Briggs 82'), 8 - Conway; 7 - Carpenter (15 - Fife 77'), 11 - Brind, 10 - Byrne; 14 - Tristram (21 - Lofthouse 72')
Goal: Tristram 29'

It was a perfect half-hour. Sometimes, that's all you need.
Brenecia in Busukuma. Eleven white guys in ten white kits and a horrifying eyesore, trying not to melt in the heat and to assure their hosts that, yes, they fucking hated the shags too.
"Try to let them do the running," Derdriu Wright told them helpfully. "Sit back in your banks and keep it tight. Nil-all would be a great result. Never stretch, never expose yourselves, take nothing for granted."
So, yes, park the bus against one of the world's best attacking teams.
Banija were on a low ebb of late, but so were Brenecia. Initially, the Kadongo Kamu peppered Anthea Finnan's goal; Kama and Ikpeazu both missed narrowly from distance, before Idi Mboge forced a brilliant stretching save from her. Finnan may not have been the highest-rated goalkeeper in the Patriots' history, but nobody could argue with the iron-wristed flick around the post.
It would be the only shot on target Banija would get of the half.

The turnaround started in midfield. Actually, it started with Banija's midfield slamming into Brenecia's and losing. Schofield and Mikoliunas brutally shut down an attack, the former slamming into a sliding challenge on Jassey, Mboge picking up possession only to be crunched by Mikoliunas. Nominally attacking midfielder Garrard picked up the loose ball from there, turning and racing forward, taking on what looked a suddenly exposed Banijan line. He swung a diagonal ball down the wing, sent Carpenter racing in behind the wingback Bokate, taking on Dabo... dropping the shoulder, beating Dabo on the outside, steadily being shepherded towards the corner flag. No matter, she thumped in a cross. For a moment it looked as though Kinteh would simply swallow it up, but crashing in with momentum on her side, Tristram contested the header. Neither won it; the ball bounced off some combination of both, but the loose ball in the box came to Katua Byrne, steaming in...
... and somehow Kouyate got her hands down in time, sliding in and barely turning a ball rifled straight at her head out for a corner.
It was a spectacular save, if anything better than Finnan's. It would have been remembered more had Carpenter not simply swung the corner in to find Leadbetter at the near post, the centre-half casually guiding a header into the top corner.

The fun wasn't over. The Patriots had the rainbow star and they were going to milk it for all it was worth. Yes, the ball spent most of the time in their box, but always there was a white shirt in the way, and when there wasn't, things just didn't quite fall for the Banijans. One time, a knockdown from Dione should have set up Ikpeazu to hammer in a volley from the edge of the box, except the ball took an oddly tepid bounce, Roscommon flitted in to snap the ball away and instead of kicking the ball, Ikpeazu kicked her. A foul, and the end of a full minute of tension. Other than that, the gruelling double pivot of Mikoliunas and Schofield allowed nothing through. Things just hit the edge of the box and... melted.
Bar claiming crosses and taking goalkicks, Anthea Finnan had just one thing to do. Towards the end of the half, Bokate fired a cutback across the box, and the goalkeeper raced out to claim it, diving at Toure's feet to snatch it up, rolling and getting to her feet, and after a moment to regain her bearings, she hammered a kick straight down the middle.
The big man, Garrard, took it on the chest, turned, and lashed a diagonal ball down the left. This time Byrne knocked the ball on and nipped past Ikpeazu, but unlike Carpenter, Byrne was not going to be content with crossing into three centre-halves. She took them on, one after the other.
Brenecia's invulnerability had not extended to inspiration, until now.
She dithered a moment, before feinting past Conateh as he dove in, before taking on Kinteh, tapping the ball around his left, racing onto the end of it. She was young; she'd beaten a 33-year old, the woman in goal was 35. Pace was on her side, but Dabo came in sliding on her blind side, and only at the last moment did she dart right, almost running back into Kinteh again, only barely stabbing a shot past the charging Kouyate's near post. It was ugly, in many respects. It was the most inspired solo goal Brenecia had scored since Lauren Cheney retired.
2-0. 2-0 in Busukuma!

2-1. 2-1 in Busukuma.
It had not taken long for regular service to resume; in the 49th minute, Banija's passes simply stuck long enough for Bokate to find open space on the corner of the box and thread a low strike past an unsighted Finnan. Sinking feeling, again. And then passes kept sticking. More and more Brenecians picked up yellow cards. Yet, that ball... just did not nestle in the net.
Wanda Kouyate had nothing to do but watch on pensively, as Brenecia's attacking play simply became a matter of hammering clearances approximately in Tristram's direction and seeing if she could draw a foul out of it. But there was nothing to watch at the other end. Another brilliant, desperate save from Finnan kept out... Leadbetter, who had mishit an attempted clearance of a Bokate cross and looped the ball precariously at goal. Jassey hit the post, and was taken off for Nzo, whose first touch was a shot that hit the other post. Another substitute, Uster, did immediately get the ball in the net, but only because Giltanan had stopped marking her before Dione had elbowed her in the head in the buildup. And the clock began ticking down...
And the attacks began to slow. The Banijan play grew ponderous. Both sides looked exhausted. The clock struck 90'. There would be three minutes of extra time, and a rushed clearance from Roscommon reached Tristram...
+1'. Tristram bore down on goal. Wright begged her to take it to the corner, but she managed to outmuscle Kinteh and... get tackled by Conateh.
+2'. Conateh slings in a long ball. Seeler nips in ahead of Ikpeazu to head it away. It reaches Nzo, who switches the play. Another substitute, the fresh Orji Uzoma, takes on Bravender. Leadbetter comes in support. Uzoma runs out of space, passes it back. Nzo, then Mboge, then Kama and, oh shit, every Brenecian at home realises, Mikoliunas and Conway have been pulled apart. There's too much space in the centre. It's just Giltanan and Finnan and Dione. Kama just needs to find the pass.
+3'. Kama finds the pass. Fuck! It's perfectly in front of Dione. He's only going to get one shot at it, and Giltanan's hand is raised for offside as she turns with all the nimbleness of a fucking barge, and Finnan's doing a desperate starfish maneuvre...
Dione just has to shoot anywhere but Finnan.
The ball thumps off his boot.
The ball thumps off Finnan's head.
It loops, goalwards. Dione's hands are on his head. Uster is racing forward. Uster is ancient. Bravender is not, and races, and really, really gets sure of her angles before--
-- Uster slams into her, and Giltanan swings out a boot and hoofs the ball into the net, and the whistle blows, and everyone is outraged at once, and-- it's a foul. Brenecia's side. Foul on Bravender, lying in a bundle of limbs. Then the referee blows the whistle three more times, before anyone can even figure out where the ball's gone.
The beautiful game.

Boot It!: Contemplation And Emotion Required

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Jan 23, 2022 8:00 am

By Peter Davis

After a tight first loss against Ranoria in Tiankong and a tight win against Darkmania in Örkendrem, the Jaguars of TJUN-ia were nearly at the end of the first half of this WCQ campaign and they somehow still led this group with only 1 loss to their name. That was certainly a surprise to many in the TJUN-ian footballing community, but David Seems and Li Xiu Ying saw otherwise - a team finally seeing what it could possibly do, a team that finally began to play like a team that was unimpressed with being Top 50 for the longest time, a team who wanted to make the WC come hell or high water. This team felt very different to the ones before, but we still had a long long way to go before we can start talking about dream scenarios and all that stuff.

Our final 2 games of the 1st half were slated to be our toughest tests thus far, beginning with one of the biggest games of the group stage thus far: TJUN-ia vs Ethane, 1st vs 2nd, Jaguars vs Red Kites at the Beregozera Stadium in Szensky. Having an undefeated top seed, one point behind us entering today, here in front of Krasnaya Stena instead of the crowd in TJUN-ia City was certainly an interesting change, but everyone knew the crowd here and KS itself would give it their all to make Nathan Walker's life a living hell for the next hour or two and that may have played a part in what was to come. This was our first game in this stadium for the campaign, believe it or not, and we certainly made the most of it in what many would describe as a statement of intent from these Jags. Vladimir Podolov was always going to go hard in his home region and getting a brace past Donovan Velázquez within the first half-hour was certainly a way of showing that. The fans certainly helped put the pressure onto Ethane's entire squad and when both Prince Carter and Archer Andrews added their names onto the scoresheet in the 2nd half, the party in the stands would go on long into the night. Seems and Li had a signature win on the Szen and no matter what happened in HUElavia, TJUN-ia would enter halfway first in this group.

That would turn out to be certainly required as the Estadio Nacional in Curumba would see the hosts make a statement of their own as the picture of this group begins to become crystal clear. It's not as if we were toothless here, as goals from Joe Green in the 1st half and Carlos Pique in the 2nd would clearly show, but the hosts were simply the better team overall tonight and it is certainly fine to admit that. Liana Fonseca-Mantovani would end up being the star of the show today, the captain of HUElavia getting a hattrick and a late assist to Sol Woo-Jin for her efforts. It certainly wasn't our day, and that would put the table into a bit of a 5-way after the first 7 games: TJUN-ia on top with 15, Ethane 2nd on 14, HUElavia 3rd on 13 and both Darkmania and Ranoria not far behind on 11 - the Top 5 separated by only 4 points.

The second half will continue with the resumption of our road trip against both the United States of Great America and Aut-Ves-Nat but for now, we can simply reflect on the first half and where we stand. 5-0-2 is certainly a great record to have, but the tightness of the group thus far is certainly scaring many who have been hurt many times before by this team, no matter how hard this team has tried to make them proud. Sometimes, the big questions take time to answer - sometimes a few weeks, maybe a few months, and in certain circumstances, maybe the answer finally comes out after four years or something like that, when at long last the point is reached where the asker of that question can say "I've waited long enough" and demand it finally be responded to. The question of "Can TJUN-ia make a World Cup?" has been asked, in full confidence, since WC86 began - that's eight years ago now, eight years of that question burning within the TJUN-ian psyche constantly. Now, after the start we've had and the pain of the past ever-present, many are starting to demand that this question be answered at long last - especially in the final chance before Levi Jackson-Holt's dream fades into dust. There is, of course, a long way to go in this campaign, but some are starting to wonder if this time is the moment we can finally see what spring is like on the other world known as the World Cup Proper. GO JAGS!

Remembering back on World Cup 86, Neville Swan recalled the first few games of that campaign with mixed emotions. The Barunians started their campaign against a familiar foe in Zwangzug, who Barunia have faced more times in World Cup qualifying than any other nation. It had been a little while since the last meeting though, and no-one on the Suns’ current squad had faced the famed black-and-white. A loss was hardly surprising, and 3-2 was a good effort from the Suns. However coach Rafael Barrios had been unhappy with the way they executed their plans, and had shown his frustrations. Neville had tried to present the player’s side, and the pair had butted heads. It would not be the last time
.
By the next game though, things were beginning to mellow out. The team had a good win over South Covello, and were performing as expected. In fact, that’s exactly how the team performed. Just as expected. They blew away the minnows, scraped draws against teams near them in the matches, then fell against the giants. The final result was a fifth place, and the mood in the team was bland, although they cheered up when they were informed that they had secured an invite for Cup of Harmony 78. What started out as a hopeful campaign soon turned into a nightmare. The Suns started at the bottom of their group, and barely picked themselves off the canvas, finishing with just two wins, both hard fought, from 6 games.

For Neville, it was hard. In his first campaign as captain, he felt the weight of the country on his shoulders. The media had hyped the team up big, riding a wave of emotion on the back of the big rebuild the NFB was spruiking. Swan had been the poster boy for that, the “people’s choice captain”. That had been one of the most difficult things to come to terms with, the additional media attention. When he had just been a player, he rarely spoke to the media. Now there were photoshoots, radio interviews, television spots, and pre- and post-match interviews. Neville had fumbled through the best he could.

The hardest part was when they asked him to identify the flaws in the team. He hated to talk bad of his team, even when they didn’t perform well. Sure, the defence had been too slow and too spaced in that game, but he wanted to talk about how aggressively they fought for the ball. He hated dragging his teammates down.

He also didn’t want to do the same to himself. After the Cup of Harmony, they began to ask him if he thought he should be captain. Too old, they said, and too inexperienced. “How did he get to thirty without being a club captain?” Others pointed out the age gap between him and others on the team, suggesting he was out of touch with reality. “Replace him with Emmanuel Carter,” was one pundit’s solution, “Let the youth lead.” Neville wondered what that particular reporter had felt, after Carter’s hot-headed exit from the side a few years later. But at the time, Neville couldn’t help wonder if they were right.

The result was that by the end of his first cycle in charge, he was genuinely thinking of calling it quits. It would be the third one-campaign captaincy in a row for Barunia, proof that the job was cursed by ill-luck. His name would go down as just another failure.

What turned it around was a conversation with an old friend, from his days playing state football. His friend had gone on to be a football statistician for one of the big newspapers. He surprised Neville with a trivia question. Which Barunian captain had the worst world cup record of all time? Neville suggested Faulkner, or Azarola, or perhaps even himself. His friend’s answer surprised him.

“Joric Ruskin, of course.”

Neville had to agree that yes, Barunia’s first ever captain had lost his only world cup game in charge, thus giving him a 100% loss record, but he argued that that was also Ruskin’s last ever game. His friend had pointed out that Ruskin was an International Hall of Fame inductee, and had his statue outside Memorial Stadium. Again Neville countered that Ruskin had achieved much of this as a coach, leading the Suns to multiple World Cups. That is when his friend told him something he would never forget.

“It’s about legacy. Ruskin was a player and a captain. He was a great coach. But he was also a war hero, and an advocate for people with disabilities and veteran rights. If he’d never been coach, they’d still have built a statue to him. They would have named the whole stadium after him if he’d let them.”

Neville got the point. He could run from his problems, or he could fight through them, and create a legacy. He could go down in history as one Barunia’s greatest captains. It wouldn’t need him to win a world cup, or even to get into the competition. It just needed him to be there. To create something for the future. They needed a leader, they need him to lead. The next day Neville called the NFB bosses and told them that, if they would have him, he would be willing to captain the team for World Cup 87.

Halfway Report,
By Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

I know, I know. You’ve probably read a bunch of halfway reports by now and are getting to read a bunch more, but the Concord Heights Times has an obligation to provide coverage of Team Cassadaigua at the midway point, so here it goes. We heard all of the talk at the start of qualifying about this being the group of death, and I do think it is playing out that way. Coverage of the tournament has been pretty good from media outlets within our group, much more than would otherwise be acceptably normal. Before we can get to the midway discussions, we have two games to talk about first, the matches which got us to the midway point.

For the Fillies, games six and seven seemed to be winnable, home to a very good Guanacasteca side, and then traveling to Mertagne. I think very highly of Guanacasteca, but as we all know that first go around in World Cup qualifying can be difficult, and not everyone can pull off what Polkopia was able to do in the last World Cup. Therefore, please note that when I call them The Pigs, I am not insulting them, as this a very common insult within Cassadaigua. The official name is Los Cerdos, which obviously sounds a lot better, but when translated, it means The Pigs. I mean, it is an animal too, despite that way the term is often used in Cassadaigua. Guanacasteca came into the match getting points, but unfortunately for them it was points that come via the draw, with an 0-4-1 record coming into the match. This may have led to the decision of Brittany Byers to shake up the lineup a little bit, but there would be no such change in goal with regular starter Cynthia Kerr getting the start. She came into the match off a clean sheet against Electrum, and did not play against Polkopia since Byers plans a goalkeeper rotation. It was said that 20–year old Stacie Thornton might get a start, but as of right now, we have not seen her. However, Stacie was designated as the substitute for this match, after Kerr. Everything was different in the back with Sarah Bayne, Shannon McCausland, Tara Keane, and Peyton Miller getting the starts. In the midfield, it was Morgan Rosenblatt, who also wore that captain’s armband for the match since Michelle Graves did not play, as well as Allison Rice, Krystal Sherwin, and Sarah Giles. Up front, it was Jenna Frontiera and Bayley Stanton as normal.

When Brittany Byers was asked about why there were no changes up front, she told us that the team wanted to get Jenna Frontiera going. Up to this game, Frontiera has played well when you look at creating chances and getting involved in games. However, she only scored two goals over the first five games, and each of them came against Acceptably Normal. Early in the game, Cassadaigua did not get much going, as this collection of players who might not be terribly used to playing with another, struggled to get the transition game from defense to offense going, leading to broken plays in the midfield. Sure, you can credit The Pigs for that to an extent but many of these issues seemed to be of the Fillies own doing. Fortunately for the pink and black, the defense kept Guanacasteca opportunities to bare minimum. In the 35th minute, Cassadaigua would have a breakthrough, thanks to a great individual effort by Morgan Rosenblatt to give Cassadaigua a 1-0 lead.

After returning from intermission, the crispness of the Fillies’ game seem to be restored, and they were creating far better opportunities on the Baptism of Fire semifinalist. Sergio Gonzalez, all 17 years of age of him, held his own in the Guanacasteca goal for a while, but the Fillies eventually used his inexperience as well that of others, like 16-year old Daniel Venegas, against them. Bayley Stanton scored in the 55th minute, off a great fake by Jenna Frontiera to set her up, and then in the 64th, Frontiera again made the defense over-commit to her, and set up Sarah Giles, who was left unchecked by Venegas, as the teenager seemed confused for a couple seconds on whether he should cover Giles or double Stanton. That hesitation was all Giles needed to get around him for the goal.

The 3-0 victory was very refreshing, coming against a team that had been playing people to draws, so they were still being productive despite not getting wins. Up next then, would be a road trip to 0-2-4 Mertagne, and once again Brittany Byers changed things up. In this match, Stacie Thornton, the 20-year old, would get the start, and she would have the regular four defenders (Graves, Swift, Speers, and Kaleta) in front of her. In the midfield, Morgan Rosenblatt got the game off (from starting), and the Fillies went with Danielle Porter, Allison Rice, Kaylee Carraway, and Caitlin Morton. The biggest surprise was up front as starts went to Madison McClain and Loreen Hazen.

Like the Guanacasteca game, Cassadaigua struggled in the midfield in the early going, but did a fantastic job in the back end as the well rested defense kept the highly offensive game plan of Metagne’s coach, Tyrrel Gulliver, who uses a 2-3-5 system. That Fillies defense was up to the task, though, and also used Caitlin Morton as a defensive midfielder more often than not, something that is her bread and butter with Victoriaville City. Stacie Thornton didn’t face anything difficult on target, and was there then needed. The question would become. “When would Cassadaigua have a breakthrough?’ That simply did not happen over the first half, and we would go to intermission scoreless.

Half number two started with Fillies getting more pressure on the backfield of Mertagne, but Hazen and McClain were clearly struggling to get any rhythm with one another. They had not played together for a while so they were not able to execute on anything but the basic set piece. Lliot Celarte made the routine saves, and the game remained scoreless at the hour mark when Brittany Byers seemed to have enough of the forwards and entered in Jenna Frontiera, Bayley Stanton, and Morgan Rosenblatt in the 62nd, with Rosenblatt acting as a forward. (Hazen, McClain, and Rice were substituted off). With them being fresh, the game quickly became all Cassadaigua in terms of possession, and got goals by Stanton in the 68th and Frontiera in the 73rd to go up 2-0 very quickly. Frontiera was close to a second in the 77th, but smacked the post with the keeper completely beaten. Unfortunately, for Cassadaigua, the clean sheet was spoiled in the 87th by Dani Emdelbia.

Now, at halfway…

So here we are. Sitting with a record of 4-3-0 after seven games, and that is not gonna get it done, obviously. Cassadaigua simply needs to get more victories, and winning just over half of them shows that there are problems with this side. Amazingly, the team is only two points out of first.

The biggest issue for this team is the lack of goals from Jenna Frontiera. She has managed only three in the first half (and only against Acceptably Normal and Mertagne), and for someone expected to be the leader of the offense, that is not enough. This is the first time that Frontiera was asked to be the leader, as the team moves on from Rachel Schanke, and there are mixed reviews as to whether or not Jenna is doing enough. The goals aren’t there. The assists are. She has done a great job setting up Bayley Stanton, or Morgan Rosenblatt, and others as she draws extra attention from the defense. What does that sound like though? Exactly. It sounds like a player used to being the “wingman” of a bigger name, and in the case of Frontiera, being the one that had been setting up Rachel Schanke on this team for several World Cups now. Jenna Frontiera is used to having people set her up. Bayley Stanton has not done that.

Who did Rachel Schanke have to generate offense in the midfield, or to score goals as she joined the attack?
Meghan Wolcott, of course, and Meghan is also retired from international play. This puts Morgan Rosenblatt in that role, and I think that Morgan has done a good job. However, Morgan was also effective in other Cups, because defenses could focus on Wolcott or the also departed Preston Newfeld. Retirements hurt, and while I think Rosenblatt has done a great job, she can’t join the offense as much as she would like, because the rest of the midfield has been a little suspect. This is issue number two of the team, and what really may be using issue number one, too. Team Cassadaigua has struggled to get things going in the midfield, and I don’t think the lineup changes which have mainly been in this third of the field, are any coincidence. Coach Byers is trying to energize this group, and it has not been here. And this affecting the forwards. So, while you can point a finger at Jenna Frontiera, don’t think she’s the only problem. Thankfully, we have a great coach and team that can get this figured out.

What has not been a problem is the defense or the goalkeeping. These are the areas where the Dagans had the most continuity, and it is showing on the field. The issue with this, maybe, is that the mantra of Cassadagan soccer is not to be a defensive team. We’re not going to go all Ko-oren on people. But just maybe, that is what we should be doing. Brittany Byers will make adjustments for the second half.

So, while the rest of the group may see us as vulnerable right now, maybe they should be concerned that a team that has not been in sync, and capable of going on a tear, is only two points out of first before they potentially go on that run.

OOC: For the people who haven't been keeping up with my RPs since 2004 (guaranteed to be 100% of readers, I'm sure), there's been a few loosely intertwined threads to an overall, grander story of Starblaydia as a nation: it's become worldbuilding via football RPs. I appreciate that just providing a whole bunch of links going back god-knows-how-many cups isn't particularly helpful to dissect this story, as some of the (necessarily immortal) characters have been developing over the course of 75 in-character World Cups over almost 15 RL years. The TL:DR grand picture, however, looks something like this:

World Cup legend (and author avatar) Simeone Di Bradini has lived for the past 50 World Cups as an immortal construct of the Dreamed Realm, thanks to Arch's IC and OOC generosity. In this time, he's saved the multiverse on several occasions, and has also traveled in time, accidentally becoming Starblaydia's version of King Arthur, the once-and-future King Oberyn Starblayde, in his country's ancient past. The Starblayde family, who currently rule Starblaydia, have all been killed off through various ways and means by the evil vampire Viannor, who is currently masquerading as Lady-Protector Korra Starblayde, the hitherto completely imaginary daughter of the former Lord-Protector Julius Starblayde, and is ruling the nation as tightly as a constitutional monarch who was once the head of the secret service and covert intelligence agency can. This is the second time she has been in control of the nation, and the first time did not go well at all.

Simeone has been informed, by the late "Best in the World" goalkeeper and prophet Lucas Cable, that Korra Starblayde is actualyl Viannor, and will enslave the entire nation/world/universe/multiverse. Simeone, together with Starblaydia national team manager Ázëwyn Fëanáro the elf, along with time-travelling dwarven scientist from the future Dalnir, plans to stop Viannor by recruiting a rag-tag band of commandos, via the process of essentially making their own Dreamed Realm constructs of some characters from the past, including Lucas Cable.

Tons of stuff has come before, which one day I will put all together in one place as the grand story arc of Starblaydia across the ages, but World Cup 78 was the start of a specific arc with a vague plan in mind, rather than just going wherever the narrative happened to take me on a given day.

Image
The commemorative coin minted to mark the
Starblaydi Credit (Symbol: Ψ) becoming a digital currency
Viannor turned the shiny golden coin over and over in her hands, inspecting every aspect of it. "Starblaydi Credit", it read in a repeated ring around the edge, "Electronic Currency. Fides, Glora, Sanguis. Zephyr." Originally they'd suggested minting it in silver, which was ridiculous. Besides the fact she wouldn't have been able to handle the coin as she did now, the commemorative token had to be as loud, gaudy and pretentious as possible. The electronic version of the Credit absolutely had to succeed, which mean satisfying both the ordinary man-in-the-street and the tech-bro streamer alike. Viannor looked out of the window at the night sky, wispy white clouds taking on a pale blue colour from the light of the moon, with some stars picked out among the sky, mostly hiding behind the moon's glow.

This coin, if her plans were correct, would be the last ones ever to be minted in the country. The benefits were more than obvious, dragging the country into a fully digital age and an economy that no longer needed to rely on printed notes, with a technological arms race between the Central Bank and the counterfeiters aiming to out-do each other. It would especially no longer need to rely on coins. She had to remember to mention 'falling down the gap in the sofa and searching in your pockets' as the ways of breaking the hold that physical cash had over ordinary people. She hadn't handled actual money herself in years and nobody really needed to now.

Every Starblaydi citizen had a technically-advanced subdermal implant that was configured as an ID chip, able to be scanned by any appropriately-configured device, used mostly by government services, specifically healthcare and the police. Ordinary people were used to their medical and criminal records being on their persons at all times, and the anecdotal evidence told her it was always a nice feeling to not have to use your passport when re-entering the country after a trip abroad, as people high-fived the scanning machines to welcome themselves back home. It had become something of a national meme. Why not, then, get people used to doing the exact same thing with their finances? Already they were used to tapping their credit cards, their phones and their watches to pay for things, so why not their hands too? It was a simple extension, and there was a ready-made app that was doing the rounds for small transactions between users. "Just Zephyr me" had broken into the popular culture as people paid each other for drinks in informal settings, at small events like garage sales and fairs, and for a number of other, generally minor, illicit services. A well-concealed government subsidiary had already purchased the parent company, and soon the Zephyr app would be required on every smartphone and smart accessory in the nation.

Keeping the currency centralised with the Starblaydia Central Bank would bring dozens of benefits. Financial inclusion, economic growth, technological innovation and efficiency of transactions. Commercial banks would lessen their private grip on the flow of money, which would move back to the government's institutions unless they could offer a better deal for their customers. No-one would ever be short-changed, mugged for their cash, or get away with hiding their money, because every single unit of currency could be tracked. Further still, the government could then simply add or remove money from anyone's account at will - not that she'd let anyone know they could or would do that. It was a financial dream for her - or indeed any - administration, because Starblaydia had always been ruled with a rod of iron; a parental figure looking down over every citizen with a warm smile, but a firm hand.

Already the stickers were being rolled out onto every point of sale machine, every checkout till and shop window. The ads were pushed out on all brands of social media across the nation, making their way into every pair of eyes in the country. Every system and every app that took payment was made ready to accept Zephyr, and that little colourful ball would be synonymous with money.

Image

The Zephyr was the gentle west wind, the marketing people had written so boldly in their presentation, the messenger of spring that makes things fruitful and productive. It was symbolically perfect, something she hadn't wanted to admit at the time, but now she was making sure to lean into the idea, flying out to the eastern-most province with the west wind lifting her wings. It was excessively saccharine and schmaltzy, but when you had to cast the net across an entire population, you had to hit the lowest possible of common denominators.

Hopefully, the move to fully digital, electronic currency would shut up the crypto-enthusiasts and their constant, near-religious levels of proselytising for digital wallets with blockchain and mining and all the nonsense that went with it. Starblaydia didn't need an official, government-sanctioned cryptocurrency. The Protectorate was not some tinpot backwater pariah with an economy based on peaches and shackled by international sanctions that crippled whatever corruption hadn't already ruined, unable to access international financing for their own bad behaviour. Stablaydia had been the proud owners of one of the top 1% of economies for more years than anyone could remember. No Starblaydi finance minister would need to grift their way to riches with the money of suckers in a closed-shop, zero-sum game of multi-level ponzi scheme hype.

Absentmindedly Viannor looked up to the moon, narrowing her eyes until they adjusted to the glare of the sun's reflected rays, thankfully harmless to her once they bounced off the lunar body. But that was the key, wasn't it? You could give them a government-sponsored or sanctioned cryptocurrency as well for them to show off their six-figure purchases of some god-awful generic churned-out "art" to use as a profile picture. You could give them just enough digital rope to hang themselves with, all the while keeping a strong and stable hand on the real money. What's more, you could do all that while near guaranteeing that a certain cadre of already-rich individuals could suddenly become super-rich off the back of the scam. Viannor made a mental note to bring this up with the right people and explore the possibilities.

For now, though, she was on her way to Aquliana. The big news was already being leaked, drip by drip, to give the citizens of the land a peek into what was to come for them. Not only was the future an electronic-only currency, but also one where everyone would be granted a Universal Basic Income.

They'd love that. They'd love her. She'd welcome them with open arms and then clamp around them so tight that they'd never be able to let go.

TW: The following spoilers will contain written graphic content, for all sakes and purposes, if you're empathic or have a sensitive stomach avoid reading them.

The Second Great War of Unification(1876-1892)

With the war so spread in so many fronts and with the states of Pomena, the West and Pacgliari having trouble communicating with the states of Santo Domenico and the Sud, paramilitaries and irregulars became commonplace and would often times infiltrate enemy positions and give them a hard time from within in order to pass communications safely and accurately. Most of the time, those irregulars were not accustomed in the ways of combat and were often times pitied against much more experienced and well-equipped soldiers in the field of combat. But what stood out about them is the bravery they exhibited in combat, even if it meant risking their own lives against an opponent they very well knew they could not beat just for the sake of coordination and cooperation.

Chapter 8: The Massacre of Matejo(March-April 1879)
"My eyes had never seen something so tragic, so appalling and most of all so cruel. The sight of an once great town in shambles and its citizens decimated all due to the fact they had a different view to the royals." Unknown writer during the time of the massacre.

The Second Great War of Unification was a time frame of an enormous societal change in Juven society. While the official stance of each side were clear, the Unionists obviously wanted a unified, globalised Juvencus while the Independentists wanted to keep the state as a loose and mostly isolated confederation of independent states instead, reality was very different. With Juvencus' diversity, neighbouring villages or even neighbourhoods could have very different views on whether or not they wanted to be part of a greater Juven state. This would lead to destructive conflicts within cities that were then even ghosted or never found their grand status again or even large massacres of people, much like the Great Attempt of 1865.

The first great town to fall victim to such massacres was the Scudelliano pro-Unionist border town of Matejo. Matejo was known as the largest Spanish-speaking town outside Cuori and the Crescent, it was well known as a trading outpost of valuable minerals such as gold and silver, as well as a beneficial spot for the very famous East Juven llamas and their products, like milk and wool. It had seen much advancement throught the 18th and 19th centuries and had a large population of around 20,000 souls. Upon hearing news of the city's choice to not send troops for the Independentist cause, several Domenican irregulars went to Matejo as a means to show that their voices were heard and to defend them from any Scudelliano attacks. They numbered around 500 individuals, most with little to no experience themselves and very excited to fight.

Prince Carlo IV of Scudelli was infuriated with Matejo's disobeying of a national decree that he himself announced that he decided he would burn the once great city to the ground. He ordered the 4th and 6th Scudelliano Land Brigades to head to Matejo itself and give them an ultimatum. The ultimatum stated that every single individual would have to join the Scudelliano cause, or face death immediately. The overwhelming majority of the town denied the ultimatum and immediately the soldiers of the 4th and 6th Scudelliano Land Brigades opened fire to the defenseless civilians. Those who were armed join the Domenican irregulars in a form of urban warfare that had become very common during the war. With people using houses, trees and shops as cover from the Scudelliano attacks, sometimes even delaying their advance against them.

For a couple days, the defense seemed to be going well by the Matejano and Domenican irregulars, however they would be facing extremely large amounts of casualties and the majority of the Matejo citizens could not leave the city, so they knew this would be the end. The irregulars ran out of supplies following a week of fighting. By March 7th, 1879, they had surrendered. Every single irregular was executed on the spot either by hanging or by shooting. From that day onward, the enraged Scudelliano soldiers massacred every single citizen of Matejo they could find for the next month, nobody could run or hide from them as they had surrounded the city and blocked each and every pathway. Almost no one managed to survive the massacre, with records of up to 19,750 dead, and those that did managed to tell the tale to the Domenicans once they got given a temporary residence, with severe mental and phyisical scars. Written records of the massacre show the brutality with which Scudellianos treated the Matejanos.

"Those were direct orders from the Prince -Do not dare to come back and call yourselves Scudellianos if you don't wipe them out of existence and every remove every record of their scrawny little sh*thole- we just could not resist them, no matter what. We had to kill every single one of them, some of us were against it but had no choice, we decided to end the deal quick and move to the rest of them. Others were disgusting pigs that were unsatisfied with a quick finish, they would torture the men in front of the eyes of their helpless wives, mothers and children, then hang them right then and there. The rest of the family would follow suit. Others killed the helpless civilians in such gruesome ways to the point I would vomit multiple times a day in the start. It was so disgusting, we would also have to bury the dead in mass graves right outside the Matejo. Once the killings were over, dynamite was placed all over town which ignited all at once, followed by a swift bombardment leaving nothing but pieces of what once was a great town. My eyes had never seen something so tragic, so appalling but most of all so cruel. The sight of an once great town in shambles and its citizens decimated all due to the fact they had a different view to the royals. Writing this is putting my life in risk, but this has to be delivered and wake the people of Scudelli up, our prince is a monster and we are better than that."

Battle Outcome: Scudelliano "victory", massacre of Matejanos. Eastern Theater scaling up.

Principality of Scudelli: 7,500 troops, 25 cannons, 50 casualties
Matejano and Domenican Irregulars: 1,300 militia, all dead in combat or by execution
Matejo: City annihilated, 19,500 individuals dead

Part 5 – Aux innocents les mains pleines ? Non. Après la pluie, le beau temps.

Exuberant Superintendent T-2000/2904-3 Surveillant Clarissa Alanis Star Breya « La Amoureux Chéri » Millie Taissa Butterfly Mélody Coraline Jolijn Trini Clementine Hollie Samantha Zeta Harumi was giddy for the past few days. The scores and the playbacks were not deceiving her, as she saw the Valentian Kittens scoring goal after goal towards their opponents. Sure, the 3rd matchday, against Kohnhead, ended up with a predictable loss, perhaps attributing to a few factors: For one, the Valentian Kittens very well know and were constantly reminded that they were young whippersnappers into the world of international football; there were several other teams and players that have played more than 100 matches, or even 200, going back to as far as the first World Cup, the history of which has always been a topic of fascination for the Valentians. The second point being that the Valentians were completely lost as to who they were playing against. Kohnhead has no roster report that the Valentians could get ahold of. "Knowing definitely was half the battle," Emerson sounded off to the rest of the team on that day after their woeful defeat of 3-5; without much information on their players, other than Clarissa recording the behavior of each of the players for the second half of the qualifications, the Valentians were going in blind, trying to do their best, but without much in the way of learning about the opponent's tactics. Still, Clarissa thought to herself that it could not have been that bad. After all, the Valentians did score 3 goals. It's only a matter of time before they started scoring more than the opponents scoring goals of their own. Crunching through the numbers, she predicted 2 wins. Her predictions were, of course, right on the nose for this time for the Valentian Kittens. Perhaps better.

Come the 5th day of the match - Valentine Z vs The Finntopian Empire @ the Fate Stadium, this was the match that Clarissa thought the Valentians might lose once again. "Again, no reports on what the opponent's roster is like and how they like to play," Clarissa talked to her team before they head onto the fields, "Just try your best, all right? You will never know!" Deep down, she felt that they might need a bit of a help, or they might not see the victory for this match. Then again, the Valentian Kittens have not been winning even when they knew the nook and canny about the other team. Perhaps going in blind might have been helpful as well, since they did not exactly need to process so much information as to who likes to do what. That was exactly what the Valentian Kittens did - to simply play and do their best, and it did pay dividends for this match. With the Finntopians scoring one goal at the 15th minute mark - an early score - it was time for the Valentians to return the favor. Twice the favor. Come the 41st minute, Katarzyna and Clemente blocked the intercepts and opponents gunning for the possession of the ball, but they were not going to have any of it. With a swift kick towards Holly as she took possession, she kicked it a few meters towards the goalpost, kicking it as hard as she could. The ball approaches, the goalkeeper scrambled to save the goal, but by the time it would have been too late. "And the Valentian Kittens scored! That's a 1-1 right now, folks!" the Valentian host blared out across all of Fate Stadium's PA systems. The crowd was going wild and crazier than ever, and with the 1-1, the worst case scenario it could happen by then would been a draw. Of course, the Valentians were planning more than just getting a draw. They have came too far, they have lost a few too many rounds, and it was time for them to buckle up and kick it in. With 10 minutes left on the clock, neither team have scored any goals, with Holly then swapping out with Kortnev Grigoriy (Grisha) Konstantinovich as her substitute. "Sorry, guys, a little too winded," Holly said, making her way towards the technical area while Germaine checked on her as the on-site medic and doctor. 8 more minutes, and it is all or nothing for Valentians and Finntopians.

Kortnev is a well-built man in his mid-30s, having just recently celebrated his 36th birthday. Hailing from Saint Petersburg, he has played for the local teams here and there, ones that the Valentians have hosted domestically without the interdimensional involvement. With Holly taking a break and leaving it to him, it is up to him now to pick up the tab, and he intended to finish the match with at least a victory for the Valentians. "Hey, don't worry about it," he said confidently to the team as he walked up to the field, "We will do just fine." The Finntopian themselves were something to be reckoned with, but in a relativistic sense, perhaps the confidence of the Valentian Kittens were due to the fact that they were not dealing with the St Trinians, at least not for the time being. For that moment, it's different, and it might have been different in a beneficial sense. With 4 more minutes left on the clock, the Valentians scrambled for a last offensive. Iraj, Helen, and Marlene were surrounding and going back and forth around Dawson, while Nathaniel ran up to the Finntopian that has the ball and kicked it towards the mids. "Daina, you are up!" Nathaniel shouted in his mind, hoping that she would know about the plan they were going for. Daina got the ball, kicked it around, then launched it towards Katarzyna to divert the attention, whom in turn shot it straight towards Kortnev. 32 seconds left. It's all up to Kortnev then, for neither team have the time to mount up another offensive. "Come on, kick," he thought to himself, "Будь что будет. Whatever happens..." Looking out for the Finntopians, he made the final stride, kicked the ball towards the goalpost, and watched as it went straight towards the goalpost. Would they intercept succesfully? Or would the Valentians and the Finntopians end with a tie?

A million flashes and a thousand cameras pointed at the goalpost, recording 400 frames per second with absolute clarity. The ball slowly made it into the goalpost, hitting the net with a gentle but firm certainty. The silence was broken by a record-setting loudness. "2-1! The Valentian Kittens took the goal!" And with the counter trickling down to 0 seconds, the victory was assured. The Valentian Kittens have taken their first won of the season. Crowd-surfing, many cheers, and of course, proper sportsmanship. The Valentians might not have known the Finntopians well enough, but they were more than happy to play with them. Even a defeat in another parallel universe would have been softened by the Valentians still shaking their hands firmly and going back to the dropship in order to discuss more strategies. For this world, however, the Valentians have won, and have called for a celebration. Clarissa hugged each and every member of the team, including the substitutes who so far have not gotten a chance to play just yet. "Don't worry, guys! There will be next matches, all right? I will make sure all of you tried at least once!"

A few Valentians chose to get a little tipsy for the night, with most of them simply going for whatever fruit juice they might have had on the dropship. Clarissa was smiling and thrilled, perhaps more than thrilled to lead the team and being there for them through their defeats.. as well as the victory that they have had for tonight. "I think things are going to look great after all!" she said with joy in her voice, "I am more than happy to lead you guys through the thick and thin! We have went through the storm, and I think we are going to be seeing a bit of sunshine. So hey! Here's to more victories!" The glasses clang together, perhaps sealing the fate of the Valentian Kittens for awhile.

-----

Studying the startup roster of Osarius' National Football Team - The Firebirds - the Valentians quickly got to work, doing their best at their home stadium. The Valentians (both the Kittens (the football team) and the audience) have not been over yet from the victory they have taken the previous day, and perhaps they were hoping for the same type of thing to happen. And in a way, it did! The news all across Valentine Z stated that one of the teams got 5 goals, while the other team got 3 goals. As for which was the team that scored the 5 goals, it would have not been obvious at first due to the way it was going at the 4th Match Day. However, those who missed the live game definitely got the hint. The Valentian Kittens have won against The Firebirds, perhaps proving to the populace and to the interdimensional community that the Kittens are impervious to fire. "I wanted to say something about how a small kitten can still kill a bird but you know, I don't want to do that. I mean sure, it does ring true, but that's just bad sportsmanship," Joaquina commented to Clarissa that day as they celebrated yet another victory. The Firebirds played harder than the Finntopians, but for this match, the Valentians were perhaps one step ahead of the curve. They went on to show this might with the 7th Match Day coming up, competing against Savojarna's National Team. Their playstyle might have been a bit more defensive compared to the Valentians, but as far as the Kittens were concerned, they were still not to be underestimated with when it comes to scoring goals. Earlier on, one of their players scored a goal against the Valentians, just like with the Finntopians. "So it would seem that we don't do so well when it comes to opening first few minutes. We have a bit of problem with that, which I might need my team to work with," Clarissa thought to herself, observing the yet-again early goal scored against the Valentians. However, it would then be overcame yet again by the Valentians playing aggressively to their nature, scoring one goal after another. With a score of 2-1, the Valentians then pulled back, making sure that they were not going to get another goal against them for a tie, or worse. As with most miracles, the Valentian Kittens won this match against the Savojarna team, yet another victory under their belt. "Not bad, not bad at all!" Clarissa squealed with delight and excitement, "You guys are doing amazing! Third win of the season! At this rate, we should be able to get the others too." She paused to show a screen from her device as she loaded the reversed table for the matches, "See? Same teams and opponents, but just that it is swapped now. In other words, remember how we played in our own stadium against the Finntopians? So next match we will be playing Away, at their home stadium. Don't worry, you guys will be fine, I can reassure you that! Oh and of course, the roster swaps. We shall let everyone have a chance!"

Excerpt from The Weightless Past: The Plan To Rebuild Kelssek Football, a book published some time in the future.

Yet there were many capable players who might also have done a job. Kari Zücker was captain of Burnaby in one of their most successful periods, winning the 14th Patriotes Cup and three league titles in five years. His international career however was unremarkable as it proved impossible to dislodge the likes of Ruslan Demetriev, Gabriel Lapierre, Adrian Tremblay-Fillon or Patrice Champetier from ahead of him as choices for central midfield. While Zücker did get a couple of call-ups and sat on the bench more than once, he never went to the World Cup finals and only won his first cap aged 33 in a World Cup 90 qualifying loss against Gyatso-kai.

“I was starting to think I was never going to get a chance. It was, I think, the fourth or fifth time I’d been in the squad. And you also had younger players like Issac Lafrenière who were, I have to say it, just technically better and more skilled than me. At Burnaby we have a very structured tactical setup, and perhaps the national team coaches were skeptical how players like me would do in a more loose system.”

“Players like you?” I ask.

“I’ve always thought of myself as a utility player, really.”

“You were also captain of the biggest club in the country, when the KFL was a world top ten league.”

“Sure, but captaincy is more than just ability on the pitch, obviously your captain has to be a regular starter and I was certainly good enough for that. But my game and what I did well as really to be consistent and reliable. I always had more creative and skilled players to pass to, I just tried to play my role and keep things simple.”

Zücker waves away the vocal opinion of his club’s supporters – again it must be said, the country’s biggest domestic football fanbase – that he was constantly overlooked due to bias or an inferiority complex in the offices of Football Kelssek.

Yet it was a pervasive sense in Kelssek that they just aren’t good enough at football. A case in point was the revelation later on in that World Cup cycle that Colm Ó Tuathail had turned down a transfer to Wynleth Flyers in favour of Ulsa, a Euran club. Wynleth had impressed with their effort to remain in the top flight that season, and hoped for a return of their most famous academy product to cement that status. Although Kelssek and Eura’s leagues were ranked in the same tier based on IFCF performance, all but the most rabid of Wynleth fans shrugged at this snub of Kelssek’s footballing system by their own national team captain.

Was this mentality also behind the constant reliance on Kelssek players abroad, at the cost of those who forged their careers at home?

Postby Flavovespia » Sun Jan 23, 2022 12:59 pm

National Stadium, Metropolitan Zafizamarrah
7:06pm

It was the day anyone who played football dreamed of, an international debut. Andrew Thomas was playing on the left wing, part of an attacking three, in his first ever game for Flavovespia. No introduction as a sub for him, he was on the pitch from the start. Not the easiest places to begin his international career, in the National Stadium of Alezian Union, but it was a time to shine. Augusto Rinaldi had made the bold decision to bench Michael Cole in favour of the Marthorpe City winger, and it needed to work, with the team struggling in the qualifiers.

The opening 45 minutes however, were tough for Andrew Thomas. Albert Freie Douwers at right back was no slouch, and he was keeping Andrew Thomas more than honest. That extra little pace that came at international level, compared to club football and even some IFCF games he’d played in, was proving to be a tough one to handle. Compounding the frustrations were a few loose first touches, losing the ball as he tried to break. David Lyons, also down the left flank was the most supportive of his debutant, but Andrew Thomas could feel the creeping frustration of some of the midfield. Andrew Thomas’ one shot at goal, attempting a curling effort around Hasan Aufar Jafaruddin that unfortunately got too much height on it, didn’t help the cause of the new winger.

Scoreless at the break, Augusto Rinaldi message to the team was a mixed one. Praise for the defence and goalkeeper, but some criticism of midfield and attacking play. Before the teams re-emerged for the second half, Rinaldi pulled the three attacking players aside. “This game can be a win for us, but I need you to deliver. So far you have snatched at chances, rushed the game a bit too much. Andrew, Jonathan, I called you up because I trust you, and I still do. But you do need to deliver, else I will need to make changes. You can do this!”

The words echoing in his ears, Andrew Thomas got his first chance around 5 minutes into the second half. A quick pass through from David Clark, and Andrew Thomas put his foot on the proverbial accelerator. Dancing down the left wing, he had the space now to put a cross in. His contact was just a bit too low on the ball, but it still flew into the danger show. Above the goalkeeper’s head, it nearly fell for Scott Coleman, but Igor Galyonskovich just put a glancing header on it. Not out of play though, Jonathan Bagshaw on the other wing kept it in play. Bagshaw send the ball into the box low and with pace, and Andrew Thomas charged towards the back post, looking to get a tap-in if needed. He wasn’t needed however. Thomas didn’t quite see who got the final touch on the ball, but a deflection sent the ball rolling over the line, and it softly hit the back of the net. Flavovespia had the opener, and the attackers had heeded the words of their managers. It would go down in the end as an own goal, but the three of them, nor the rest of the side would care.

Unfortunately for Flavovespia, 2 goals conceded not long after the opener put them on the back foot. It fell to Robert Totten to eventually rescue a point, the midfielder unexpectedly rising to the top of the goals scored sheet for Flavovespia these qualifiers. Whilst Andrew Thomas was eventually subbed off late on for Michael Cole, the Marthorpe City could be satisfied with his debut, after a tough start.

Saints Park
4:45pm

“OPEN!” shouted Andrew Brocklehurst, sprinting towards the Adab goal, with his marker losing touch with him. Michael Cole was charging alongside down the left wing, his fresh legs providing the opportunity for Flavovespia to grab one goal back as the minutes ticked towards 90. Michael Cole took a shot from the left with power, but no placement, and it flashed high and wide past the goal. The audible groans could be heard around the ground, and some fans looked like heading for an early exit.

“What the **** was that?” yelled Andrew Brocklehurst towards Michael Cole. The debutant off the bench was none too impressed by the decision to shoot and not pass by Michael Cole, not least because Andrew Brocklehurst was possibly free. “You were covered, don’t blame me” was the quick retort of Michael Cole. “Bull****” muttered Andrew Brocklehurst under his breath, running back to try and win the ball from the goal-kick. Not that Andrew Brocklehurst needed to hurry back into position, the Adab goalkeeper was taking quite a leisurely approach to this goal kick given the 0-2 scoreline.

At full time, the boos rang around the stadium. Chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” could be heard, although it seemed somewhat harsh to fault Augusto Rinaldi for this. Simply put, the entire attack had capitulated. Andrew Thomas never got into the game really. Scott Coleman missed a clear cut chance, and was uncharacteristically poor before being subbed off. Then substitutes Michael Cole and Andrew Brocklehurst failed to add any goals, and now seemed at odds with each other. Only Jonathan Bagshaw seemed to have put in anything nearing a half-decent performance, and Flavovespia could hardly rely on a 19 year old to somehow pull the team out of the quagmire.

The atmosphere in the changing room after the game was one of the most tense that many of the Flavovespian team could remember. Augusto Rinaldi wasn’t a manager particularly known for kicking off at the players, but he absolutely tore into the squad following the display against Adab. Nobody escaped the blame, and the squad were told in no uncertain terms that improvements had to be made, else their chances of playing under him would be minimised. Of course a few in the room were sceptical he’d even be the manager going into the next game, but his CAFA2 performance had at least saved him for now.

It wasn’t long since Rinaldi left the changing room that the players soon resumed their row on the pitch. “Michael, why won’t you pass the ball! I could’ve scored!” Andrew Brocklehurst stated rather bluntly.
“Yeah sure, with that defender closing in and the goalkeeper in position, besides you didn’t score earlier” Michael Cole stated with equal bluntness.
“What, one missed chance and suddenly I shouldn’t shoot. You gonna say that to all us attackers?” retorted Andrew Brocklehurst
“Big words from someone with one cap and a Golden Boot just because of all the crosses into the box last season”, said Michael Cole, his matter of fact tone of voice doing little to defuse the situation.
Scott Coleman stepped in “Guys, let’s not do this now. We all have bad games from time to time, yes most of us did today, but don’t fight each other”. The captain hoped to defuse the situation, and whilst it initially seemed to work, Michael Cole remained unimpressed.
“Alright for you to say, but all this team is at the moment is a bunch of wannabe superstars in their mega money league, and a bunch of players from an overrated Loxthorpe side. Yet one mistake and I’m the bad guy. Whatever, see you guys later!” Michael Cole grabbed his stuff, and stormed out the changing room, towards the team coach, leaving several of his teammates nonplussed, as the air filled with silence.
“….right, anyone else got anything to say?” stated Scott Coleman tentatively. He had no idea how Steven Hall used to handle this, and wished someone else was the stand-in captain at this point. At least nobody seemed to want to add fuel to the fire.
“Just leave it a bit, he’ll calm down eventually. Seems like his inherited his dad’s temper”, stated Tony Gardner, who certainly didn’t appreciate Michael Cole’s comment, but bit his tongue to avoid being involved in more drama.
“Man that guy is a bit crazy sometimes” said Lucky Diamond.
“And you’re not Lucky?” was the quick reply of Robert Totten. The tense atmosphere was broken, as the team laughed in response, even Lucky Diamond found his teammate’s wit amusing despite being on the end of it. The players began to collect up their belongings and file out of the changing room. The mood was still fairly despondent, but amongst the mess, some hope remained of salvaging the second half of qualifying.

Shamrock Cathair’s Archer Flat didn’t look like a nice person, but once you got underneath the surface, it turned out that, actually, he was even worse than you could have imagined. As the aeroplane descended through the clouds over Hapilopper City, he was explaining to his fellow centre-half, Cazadores Cathair’s Obadele Volonte, how to most efficiently kick a dog.

“It’s all in the ankle” said Archer, pulling up one leg of his trousers and putting it on Obadele’s lap. Obadele rolled his eyes and calmly moved his iced tea out of the way, looking down at the pale milky white of Archer Flat’s ankle.
“It’s a flicking motion. You don’t go all in with the hips and thighs like kicking a football, it’s a gentle swing, you meet it with your instep and it’s a flick of the ankle to the left - or right if you’re cack-footed. That way you don’t concuss the dog on impact, and so it experiences the existential peril of being eight / twelve times its height away from the ground, and maybe upside down if you’ve done it with the right amount of panache” said Archer, horrifically abusing the word ‘panache’ with an intrusive R, some waggled finger-commas and a slight burp at the end.
“Are you going to get your foot out of my balls, mate?” asked Obadele. It was ostensibly a question, but it wasn’t phrased like one, instead asked in the way you might say 'huh, it's raining outside'. Archer obliged and put his feet back down on the floor for a second, before leaning back and pushing his knees up and into the chair in front of him, causing the occupant of that seat, one Yuriyorkis Stelea, to almost poke himself in the tonsils with his potato chip.
“Of course for you’re larger breeds - your boxers and mastiffs and anything with ‘bull’ in it, you have to take a bit of a run-up - not so long as they’ll suss you’re about to launch them and run away, but not so short that you don’t get enough air and as such don’t get as much of a head-start when you run for the nearest tree, but on the wh”
“Mate what the fuck are you doing” came a voice from in front of him. Yuriyorkis Stelea’s furious eyebrows were waggling themselves at Archer from around the seat.
“I’m explaining to Obadele how best to kick a dog.”
“Obadele doesn’t need to know how to kick a dog”
“Yes he does”
“I mean I don’t” said Obadele “but I’m enjoying this brief glimpse into the mind of the guy who has to have my back when we pull on the claret and green”
“Enjoying?” asked Yuriyorkis
“Yeah it’s more like ‘furiously taking mental notes and lowering expectations’” said Obadele, before fishing for his headphones. “Anyway yeah, he’s all yours, Yuri”
“Why does Obadele need to know how to kick a dog?” Asked Yuriyorkis to Archer, though his gaze was elsewhere. Archer got as far as ‘well you see’ before being interrupted.
“No wait, I don’t care, I’ve just remembered the question I actually wanted to ask: Don’t jab your knees into my seat, you fanny”
“That’s not a question, can’t answer it”

—

“There’s no art to taking candy from a baby” said Archer. Obadele, still with his headphones on, did nothing but shuffle forward two paces. There were now only two people between the two of them and passport control. “The real trick is to give it to another kid in front of the baby’s eyes. Like, you smile at the other kid and give him a sweet, but then you look back at the baby and - this is important - you draw your fingers across your throat and scowl and make short but sudden movements in the baby’s direction, like you’re about to, I dunno…”
“Kick it?” came a voice from his left. Archer turned to see Yuriyorkis the other side of a small piece of tape, about twelve people back in the queue, still waiting to go round the corner.
“Exactly” said Archer. “Wait weren’t you in front of us? How come you’re so far back in the queue?”
“I waited until the seatbelt sign turned off before I got up and got my things”
“Ah right”
“You were already waiting by the door”
“Yeah”
“Even before we’d landed. You tried the handle a couple of times on the final descent”
“Yeah it was funny how that air stewardess tried to rugby tackle me”
“You could have just let her hit you, you saw her coming”
“Quick sidestep innit”
“Well that’s why I’m so far behind you. I was stuck behind her stretcher. And I *still* can’t believe you insisted on getting off *before the stretcher*
The line moved forward again, and then once more, and Archer walked over to the passport check.
“Can’t hear you mate” said Archer, over his shoulder, as the Hapilopperian checked his passport.
Yuriyorkis decided to speak up. As loud as he could.
“Which do you prefer? Kicking dogs or putting little stewardesses in the hospital?” shouted Yuriyorkis. Archer smiled, shook his head and turned to the passport control officer.
“He’s speaking metaphorically” said Archer. The man behind the little window stamped his passport and sent him through, though gave Archer a bit of side-eye as he did so.
"Don't mind him" said a voice in front. The passport officer looked up at a tall, smiling figure removing a set of headphones that looked like they cost a year of his salary. "Unless you're a dog or you're thinking about playing as a striker for Hapilopper on Saturday evening"

The Second Great War of Unification(1876-1892)

IN THE COLONIES

While the states in what is today known as Juvencus were known for their relative isolationism from the outside world, reality would often times be a slap in the face on said isolationism. A lot of rich cities managed to trade or even establish big, flourishing colonies all over Sonnel and someteimes even in different parts of the multiverse, though the latter ones would often times be abandoned or be given excessive autonomy due to the distance and costs of maintaining them. One of said colonies was the modern nation of Al Qurija, then claimed and split into two by the big powers of the war, the Duchy of Pomena and the Principality of Scudelli. Pomenienze Qurija was mostly known as a trading hub and stop for Pomenienze ships heading from and to Pomenienze Montagnaverde and Pacglarese Green Coast from the mainland, carrying raw materials from both Montagnaverde and Al Qurija, such as oil, coal timber and agricultural products like dates and the ever-increasingly needed wheat among others. Scudelliano Qurija was mostly used for its raw materials like oil, coal and granite. Pomenienze Qurija had more lax trading laws and more freedom of movement as well as a bigger diversity in its population and fairer distribution of power, Scudelliano Qurija had a big Qurijan majority and other native minorities in small amounts with an even smaller amount of Scudellianos in charge of them. Al Qurija would be the first and most important colonial front in the war as Scudelli and Pomena would duke it out for absolute domination in the area once and for all.

Chapter 1: The Stefanovo Incident(June 12th, 1879)
"To see people fighting for a homeland that is not their own with such grit and determination has changed my viewpoint on the population of the Qurijas. Qurijans are much braver than once thought, and we should give them credit for it." Alessandro Cariti, Governor-General of Pomenienze Qurija, ~circa 1882

While the war had been in full swing on the mainland, the colonies lived under the constant threat of the war spreading into them. A form of very weary peace, knowing that there was a chance this would all fade away at any given moment. The General Census of the Qurijas had taken place all the way back in 1875 and had finished right at the dawn of 1876, but the data was never really published until June 7th, 1879, due to the war. The data itself seemed harmless on the surface but was used as a scapegoat for demonstrations to happen all over the Qurijas, it was mostly the Pomenienze who were alerted, as their slice of the cake had the smaller population though with a near equal industrialisation. Written records stated.

"The general census of the Qurijas of 1875, as given by the Confederal Statistics Bureau is as follows. First and foremost, the combined population of the Qurijas has been counted to be 2,101,229 people of all ethncities and groups. The population of Scudelliano Qurija is counted to be 1,357,021, while the population of Pomenienze Qurija is counted at 744,208 people. This means the total population of each has increased since the last census of 1859.

By ethnic groups, the total population is divided as such:
Ethnic Juven: 111,365 or 5.3%
Ethnic Qurijan: 1,374,203 or 65.4%
Ethnic Slomjenski: 401,334 or 19.1%
Ethnic Buseojin-saram: 77,745 or 3.7%
Ethnic Jokani: 71,441 or 3.4%
Other groups: 65,138 or 3.1%

By religion, the total population is divided as such:
Islam of any form: 1,775,538 or 84.5%
Sunni Islam: 1,628,452 or 77.5%
Shia Islam: 109,263 or 5.2%
Other forms of Islam: 37,822 or 1.8%

Christianity of any form: 281,564 or 13.4%
Juven Catholicism: 222,730 or 10.6%
Orthodox Christianity: 44,125 or 2.1%
Other forms of Christianity: 14,708 or 0.7%

Sonicrism: 35,720 or 1.7%

Other religions: 8,404 or 0.4%
"

The Pomenienze knew they would have to act very quick in the Qurijas in order to solidify any realistic chances of winning the war fast and in a smooth way. While this seemed impossible in the mainland, where all sides were going with all of their force, it seemed much more plausible in a place such as the Qurijas and especially with the knowledge that the Pomenienze side treated the natives much more fairly and less like an expendable resource. They infiltrated bright minds and orators to Stefanovo, the largest population center in the Scudelliano part of the country. They used eloquent ways to present the census as a means to prove to the Qurijans of the city that they were being used by the Scudellianos and were eventually going to be replaced by them if they did nothing to stop it.

While most Qurijans were aware of this fact, a lot of them were also very apathetic and believed that nothing would stop the Scudelliano iron fist, especially during the war in the mainland, when their materials would be needed most. Some of them were also very happy to cooperate with said Scudelliano and opposed the orators and bright minds instead. This created division in Stefanovo where thousands of people would gather up to listen to bright pro and anti-Scudelliano orators bring reasons and arguments as to whether or not the Qurijans were being mistreated. This led to discussions about war, since the colonies belonged to opposing factions. The pro-Pomenienze Qurijans and the pro-Scudelliano Qurijans quickly started fighting with each other which led to reported hand in hand combat and even gunfights. 651 people died that day, while thousands more were injured.

The following day, June 13, 1879, Pomenienze Qurija announced its official mobilisation of troops to which Scudelliano Qurija did the same and the war was under way in a new theater, the one in Qurija meant to unify it once and for all and the first one away from the mainland. It would be a new, brutal battleground and the first one with non-Juven fighting side by side with Juven. While Stefanovo would slowly calm down, other locations famed for being more peaceful would start to fire up with new and deadly tactics not even used in the mainland yet.

The National Kickoff
The Online Home of Valladar Football!

Seven Things Left From Rassmussen's First Seven

By: Laura Palma

Hello, lovers of Valladar football and other casual readers and welcome to another entry of The National Kickoff, covering the Valladar national football team in their newest adventure to return to the World Cup finals, in which after halfway point in the qualifiers they find themselves in a very good position to try and fulfill that goal, placing second in Group B with 16 points and trailing the incumbent World Champions Ko-oren (whom they already beat in Metropolis) by just two. But undoubtedly this "rebirth" has an exclusive figure, and that is that of the new manager Federico Rassmussen, who came back home from Quebec and Shingoryeo to replace Jessica Curran (who by the way I would like to congratulate on her success in making the Valladar women's league a dream come true) at the helm of the national team. So...what changed from Curran to Rassmussen to put Valladares back into real contention for a World Cup finals berth? Well, keep reading and we'll tell you here the 7 things we learned after these first 7 matches of the Rassmussen era!

7. NT call-ups won't be static
Those times when 23 players were called up for the entire duration of the qualifying campaign, or more recently when a NT pool was called up and only 23 players from it saw action while the others had to content themselves with appearing on the list are long gone, gentlemen. The whole idea behind a pool (which Federico Rassmussen was finally able to decipher) is selecting players to make use of them when required, not making a nice longlist just to trim it down to the same names over and over. Oh, and here comes another thing that the manager has nipped in the bud: cronyism and favoritism. It must have been clear to us by now that the darling of fans, agents and bosses is not necessarily the same of a person who is willing to make the changes he deems necessary for his team and who won't give a damn whether his name is "Aymeric Fortin" or "Fabio Betancourt" whenever he considers that he needs players with other characteristics. Rassmussen has made it clear that everyone in his pool is going to see action at some point or another, and that no-one has earned their place in the team. Acosta and Benítez, wait for your moment to sit in the stands for it is yet to come...

6. Pressure was an underrated (yet valuable) tool
In this World Cup qualification stage, the Valladar NT has exhibited the characteristic traits of Federico Rassmussen, which he already demonstrated with outstanding results at Valencia FC and the Independent Athletes of Quebec: a high-pressing side ready to get possession back as soon as they lose it, and going immediately forwards once they win it back. This strategy delivered great results on the road against Voidstania and Galliena, who were unable to deal with the quick counterattacks by the Valladar NT, and whilst La Nacional have tried to be more offensive at home and deliver the usual blitz the average Valladar fans are used to, it also served to keep Ko-oren's post-football counters at bay for the most part of that match at Swangard. On the other hand, this tactic has somewhat eclipsed Cristian Benítez, who as a playmaker is more accustomed to (and more skillful at) possession play and hasn't had as many chances as under previous managers. However, he has accepted the circumstances without complaining and has done his best to adapt himself to the new system. The other downside is that we've lacked defensive organization at some crucial moments (i.e. Hispinas and Garifunya) which has cost the five points dropped in the entire campaign, but there's always room for improvement.

5. Zero complexes against the big guns, zero complacency against the underdogs
No matter whether La Nacional are playing the World Champions or an unranked side, this newest iteration of the Valladar NT has shown that it will approach every and all game with the same seriousness, no matter the opponent. Telling proofs of this have been the games against Ko-oren at the National Stadium and Savigliane in Carloburgo, in which the Valladars didn't let themselves to get intimidated by the rivals and were able to win, while on the other hand, backwaters such as Kingdom of Voidstania and Galliena were duly overwhelmed at their own homes. Although Hispinas and Garifunya have been able to take points off Valladares in this qualifying process, the NT has proven in every game to be a team that knows what is at stake and goes to every stadium to play and win and...if winning is not possible, they will at least make an effort to not lose (even though that was not enough to get anything out from the Hispinas trip but we tried regardless).

4. New names have got their chance to shine
This is largely related to point 7, but one of the reasons which the need to bring more rotation to NT callups stems from has to do with the fact that we need to make way for the future crop of the Valladar team to replace those that will sooner or later step aside and retire, and that of course implies giving them the chance to show what they've got. And what's the best place to look at for these new players? Liga-1 of course. And sure we've had some interesting names getting on the fans' radar, especially in a line that cried out loud for new blood: the defense. Danny Barrichelli and Luan Barbosa, two of the best homemade defenders in Liga-1, have been able to take great advantage of their big opportunity with Rassmussen's call-ups, with Barrichelli's height and aerial prowess being greatly exploited by the gaffer in setpieces, both in defensive and offensive modes. In the midfield, while Andrés Abrigo, Marcelo Escobar, Adrien Trolli, and Marcelo Zamudio are getting more time of play than with previous administrations, there is one new name standing out: Eterna Stars' Nicholas Thaller. The 24-year-old winger has entered in two 23-player squads, and finally had his chance in this last game against Savigliane at White Meadow Arena, in which his speed through the left flank was instrumental to help speedy killer Caleb Bentley (who also had his maiden appearance with the NT in this game) score the second and final goal of the night. And last but no least, let's praise the fact that the Liga-1 former and current topscorers Mateo Foschini and Alexis Ardouin have also been considered, and both have shown interesting things when given the chance to play.

3. Home? Rather, a fortress (or many of them?)
The key to success for most successful and winning teams, both clubs and national teams, is arguably to be very strong at home. And if we come to that, the three games that Valladares has played at home (Ko-oren, Atheara, Savigliane) have been fair and unappealable wins, even though the team has somewhat deviated from Rassmussen's original plan by playing to steamroll the opposition from minute 1. And against the top, second, and third seeds of Group 13, with Valladares being the fourth one. Without a doubt, leaving no crumbs to any team that visits Valladares is a clear objective of the Rassmussen era, if we consider that winning every home game will leave you with a performance of at least 50% that should help greatly to contend for a berth to the World Cup finals. In our specific case, that perfect streak at home has been further strenghtened by the wins earned in the Kingdom of Voidstania and Galliena as well as the draw in Garifunya (we've got to see the glass half full here, ok?), which played a part into our current second place. And there's something the fan is definitely appreciating as well: the home stadium rotation which was famous in previous campaigns is back, taking the NT (which is supposed to represent the whole nation) out of their peaceful Metropolis abode for a change. Eterna City and Carloburgo, two huge footballing hotbeds, already enjoyed their moment to have the NT back into their stadiums and the fans from those places have reciprocated by giving their vital support to the Valladar players and turning into that much-needed "12th player". Of course, I expect things at Pradera, Campo Grande, Bezieres, and Canalave not to be quite different from this in the crucial second half of qualifying. Oh, did I mention that our next two games are both at home? Perfect chance to keep that streak rolling.

2. Unity is strength
Precisely this good start of the Rassmussen era has reignited in Valladar fans that dormant love for their NT, and it has somewhat healed the cracks in the national team-fans relationship left by the previous administration, which was never really popular with the fans and could only see how the lack of results did nothing but exacerbate the rift. Well, although this team made by Federico Rassmussen is not the offensive machine of yesteryear that ruthlessly destroyed its opponents, this time we Valladar fans have felt that this team is actually going somewhere and have surrounded and supported them accordingly. When was the last time a motorcade followed the Valladar NT bus in its transit between the airport and the concentration site? Or between the team hotel and the training site or stadium? Not even in the now distant World Cups 74 or 75 or even after the closer Di Bradini Cup 48 when the Mininacional returned home with the trophy was there such fervor that I remember. And this partly explains point 3. Because...is there a better incentive than having tens of thousands of boisterous fans backing you and hissing and cussing the rival to no end?

1. Someone with actual sense of fashion is finally sitting at the bench
Okay, this is more of a personal view than anything else. But Rassmussen is fashionable even if bathed in tar and you can't deny it.

So friends, that's it. Seven matches played and seven positive things. The current performance of the Valladar team in this qualifying stage has given us reasons to dream of leaving frustrations behind and returning to the World Cup finals with a bang. However, all of these nice and good things will have to be ratified in this second half of qualification, considering that we will be playing all the top seeds of Group 13 on the road while having to deal with the underdogs at home. But I trust Rassmussen, and I am sure that he will take us quite far if he and the NT continue through this path. At least, if we fail to qualify to the World Cup this time we won't end up being miserably far from the goal. ¡Adelante, Valladares!

The Saterun National Team's latest run of games has been, well, depressing. 2 losses, including MD7, which was the first time in the entire tournament that the Claws failed to score. It has led to Saterun's record being 2-1-4, which is not a very good first-half tournament record. A noticeable highlight was Thiago Esparza's brilliant freekick goal against Sharktail.

Saterun 1-2 Sharktail

After a mixed first five games, the team was really trying to get the qualifiers back on track. They knew that this was to be expected, as it was their first WCQ*, but they had a strong desire to make it to the World Cup Finals. The game started normally enough. Esparza had an early opportunity to score from a through-ball by Mitzinho, but he was shut down by Amir Fazrul. Around the 34th minute, Kaka Sarabola was brought down at the upper-right corner of the penalty area. Normally, Kaka himslef would take freekicks, but Thiago had been practicing obscure angles in training and was better prepped than anybody for this one. The captain ceded the freekick, and Thiago stepped up. The ball went whistling through the air, punching into the top corner before the goalkeeper could even move. Thiago rightfully wheeled off in celebration, and his teammates dashed after him. Saterun was still leading in the 45th minute, and an exuberant Martin Freeberg could not have happier with his number 9. Unfortunately, Sharktail quickly turned things around in the second half. They scored twice in ten minutes to be leading by the 66th. Saterun nearly equalized in the 77th minute, but Mitzinho's slotted effort was knocked aside by Maxter. The game ended sullenly, with Saterun again dropping 3 points that they really needed. Adam Antwerp Stadium was quiet that day. "The whole stadium knew it was good, as soon as he kicked it."- Martin Freeberg
*If you look at the records, this isn't technically Saterun's first WCQ. We participated in 89, but I was preoccupied with other matters and so didn't even post a roster. We are looking at this as out first official WCQ.

Ancherion 2-0 Saterun

Saterun were to travel to Ancherion next, and once again found themselves playing on a mud-soaked Sunday League pitch. The Ancherion team didn't have names on their backs, so the bewildered Claws didn't even know who took three points from them. The rain came down hard, and several of the players lost their footing. What was even funnier was the World Cup referee, whose spiffy yellow uniform wasn't made to cope with mud. Saterun had some first half attempts, but the initial forty-five were mainly at Ancherion feet. The home team even made a breakthrough in the first half, with Ralf Abiatti hitting the pitch hard after an initial save to leave the goal wide open for an easy tap-in. It was 1-0 at halftime. Martin Freeberg tried to motivate his team, but you could tell that they were just happy to be under the bench roof. After the break, the Claws uneasily stepped back out onto the pitch. The ensuing 44 minutes were mostly the same as the rest of the game: the ball going anywhere but were it had been played to, rain attacking torrentially, and the referee looking dirtier than former Head Coach Jamel Klisinki's post-game remarks. The game was looking like a close Ancherion win when the home team themselves started to push the ball up. It was the last minute, and everybody was tired, dirty, and done. The counter-attack wasn't even that much of a counter or attack. The Ancherion just played a long ball up, and shot. Saveli Holst cleared it off the line, but the ref called it a goal. The Saterun players argued, of course, but they were as glad as anybody when the game concluded and they got to go back to their warm, dry hotel. "That wasn't in, not for a second."- Saveli Holst

Martin Freeberg Interview

SSN: Coach Freeberg, thank you so much for being here.

MF: My pleasure.

We want to start off with the most recent games. Two losses from two games isn't the best.

We know that. We've studied the play styles of both Ancherion and Sharktail. We won't be surprised come MD8&9.

The whole nation is hoping you're right. We are very interested in how you'll respond to these results.

I'm sure you are.

Anyway, we have some questions about the team- first what goes on in the locker room? Second, why did you sub Saveli Holst against Vdara? Third, what is Gage Keegan like sitting on the bench?

1. It is a very friendly environment in the team locker room. Thiago is younger than most of them, but he is a definite leader and helps keep the locker room environment in check. 2. He was getting tired. Claudio was itching to come on, and Saveli even told me once he got onto the bench that he needed a rest. I think it helped his performance against Takeshwar. 3. Gage is an amazing footballer, but he can get... vocal if sat out for too long. He will have a spot in the next qualifying round as a top sub, and Coiro and Lundquist have to watch their backs.

I'm sure he can. What has it been like to coach the National Team, especially after the IAC 14?

All the lads resent getting out so early in that competition, but they have set their sights on something else now. They've really started to focus on getting into the finals this time around. As for me, I just keep on giving my encouragement. And I'll repeat what they say: sometimes, it's nice to coach a minnow instead of a shark. The FA has reasonable expectations of the team in this size tournament, and so the only pressure on me is how the players feel about me. So far, we have a great relationship.

What will you do differently in the next half of qualifying?

We are trying to go more defensive(OOC: Could we change our style modifier to +1.5?) and control the ball more. We are playing for a possession based game. I'll also be making more substitutions so that the squad feels more rested. In general, it'll be more focused on the individual players.

What are your expectations for the tournament?

The team thinks we can definitely get a play-off berth. If we come shy of that, it'll still be okay. We haven't been playing for nearly as long as some of the other teams have, and we know that. But we are definitely shooting for the stars.

Thank you, Coach Freeberg. That's all the time we have for today.

Thank you.

90th World Cup Qualification So Far...
Is Group 10 The Most Interesting?
@ Zoloroni Sports City Stadium - Zoloroni, Mercedini

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to Mercedini Sports Daily, as we bring you more coverage of the 90th World Cup Qualification Stage. It's been an interesting week of football for everyone involved in this massive spectacle, but none more so than the teams of Group 10. Following last night's result, the group table is one of the closest that the competition has ever seen. There is still plenty more games to be played from now until the end of the qualification cycle, but we thought we would look into the details of the group that everyone seems to be talking about.

World Cup Qualification: All Eyes On The Prize

Few expected Group 10 to be as closely fought as it has been, none least the Golden Eagles. With few experienced names in the mixed, it has been a welcome surprise that so many of Group 10's teams have turned up to the party, meaning it is certainly the current group to watch for many of those looking for a bit of excitement. Some groups may have a surprise leader in their midst, but at the moment there is only one which threatens to go down to the wire with over half the group in contention. Mercedini have not used their Pot 1 paper advantage to take hold of their group, and thanks to a winless streak of three games, they sit second behind a surprisingly clinical Ochre Islands side out of Pot 6. Pot 2 Jeurselem sit fourth due to head-to-head rankings, despite having the same record as the Golden Eagles. With four points separating first from seventh, one good run or one disastrous match could see any team from from top to bottom, or vice versa.

*Group 10 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Ochre Islands 7 4 0 3 10 10 0 12
2 Mercedini 7 3 2 2 15 12 +3 11
3 Kyzhurkistan 7 3 2 2 10 12 −2 11
4 Jeruselem 7 3 2 2 20 18 +2 11
5 Soldera 7 3 1 3 18 13 +5 10
6 Darmen 7 2 3 2 17 17 0 9
7 Pluvia and the Saxean Isles 7 2 2 3 16 20 −4 8
8 The Gothanita Isles 7 2 0 5 6 10 −4 6

Overall, Mercedini haven't played too badly, although it's clear that the fast schedule of matches and the lack of squad depth has hurt Dini when playing lower ranked sides. The clear highlight of the campaign so far has been the 5-2 victory in Jeruselem, which put them as clear favourites in the group(due to the first seed defeating the second seeds in their own back yard). Since then, Dini have failed to win against Kyzhurskistan, Pluvia, and most recently, Darmen to pull them back into the mix for the top two spot. It seems like every team has had their troubles in this group, with every team dropping points in at least three games out of seven. At the moment, that doesn't really benefit or disadvantage anyone due to the long campaign still to go. However, if this continues, then strength of schedule could come in to play as the games and the points run out.

With everyone now having played each other at least once, there is likely going to be some hefty tactical changes to all teams, as they now have had the time to figure out what works and what doesn't. Will Jeru change their tactics for the Dini vs. Jeruselem rematch? Will Billic rotate the squad as much as he has done? All of these questions will be answered as the points tick down and we tick closer to seeing who is making on the plane to Vilita & Baker Park.

Plenty to digest as that concludes our brief run down of out group so far. With every team winning and losing, we won't be seeing eliminations until at least the tenth match day of play, but with every team so close together, we could be seeing it all come down to a one match shootout. Will we have any nails left come the end of the qualification phase? We don't know but we will be sure to give you all the action and reaction on MSD. Up next for Dini, it's out first chance to do the double over a team as we travel to the Gothanita Isles in a 2nd versus bottom clash. We hope you will be there, cya!

With thanks to Tumbra, who's allowing me to write some of the background pieces that explain the world around the main story. This piece occurs around the same time as what spring is like, which is Season 5, Part 5.

The Sun Kissed
Capital District, Chromatika

The Sun Kissed was a popular outdoor café in Chromia, one that was popular enough to have regular clientele even during the rapidly approaching winter. They had the sense to have outdoor heaters and awnings to cover the comfortable seats, and an owner that knew when to move everything indoors if the weather called for it. Thankfully, it was a brisk, cool day, and Ami Coulibaly was happy enough to enjoy one of the café's numerous fruit juices - apple mango, a curious mixture that she particularly enjoyed - as she read the dossier for the upcoming match against the Anomalies U-18s squad.

As a player who played both in the Youth League and in the Red League, Coulibaly's minutes were limited - Chromatik weren't allowed to use her for more than 120 minutes a week, both leagues combined. This meant that she usually played for 75 minutes in the Youth League and was taken off just in case something happened to Raul Vitan; not that it ever had - as Raul kept himself in shape and was one of the more durable players Chromatik had - but Jannick Kontiola wasn't one to take chances, and Coulibaly was okay with that.

Anomalies U-18s were a team that had a route to get to the Youth League title this year as well, leading to Coulibaly looking at the report intently, to where she didn't notice a figure step up to her. Lee Kang-Hyuk, Ami's boyfriend of two years, approached her cautiously - he knew her well enough to interrupt her when she was concentrating on something - and sat down quietly next to her as to not draw attention. It took Ami a further three minutes before she recognized that someone else was next to her, which made her start until she noticed who it was.

"That didn't take as long as you thought it would," she commented, "Did Professor Whiteworth let you guys go early or something?"

Lee was a Sophomore at Chromia Central College University, and a Chemical Engineering Major. Professor Alissar Whiteworth was known in the Engineering department for being a menace in the Engineering Department; though she knew that Lee blew things out of proportion sometimes to get sympathy from her, he wasn't the type to bemoan without reason.

"The old codger does have a heart after all," he answered evenly, "Told us we'd been doing a stellar job and gave us the weekend off. I came here as fast as I could, traffic outstanding. Did you wait long? He reached over and used his six foot, four inch frame to give Ami a hug, causing her to blush.

"Nah, not really," she brushed off, "So, what shall we do today?"

"I got two tickets to the cinemas," he provided sheepishly, "We can go see that new movie starring JoAnna Hans Ericksson that we were discussing the other day."

JoAnna Hans Ericksson was one of the three most famous actresses in Chromatika, specializing in action/spy thrillers, and the two were big fans.

"You mean, The Sound of Darkness? I thought you didn't like movies that could be potentially scary," commented Ami, a surprised look on her face.

"I mean, if I get scared, I can just hold onto you," he replied, squeezing her hand.

She blushed again, but before she could reply, he changed the topic.

"So, how did it go with your friend, Miss Harrison? Did the ploy work?"

Ami looked at him with a bit of surprise, before realization swept over her face.

"Yep, worked like a charm. She moved in with Stephen - that's the idiot that couldn't make a move - and I reckon it's just a matter of time," she responded, smiling at the thought of the two awkward lovebirds. "Thanks for agreeing to the idea, by the way."

He nodded slowly, before responding, "You know, we should come up with a plan of what to do if she asks to come over to the place where you and I are both staying."

Her eyes darted to him immediately, as she responded, "What do you mean? Are you suggesting..."

"That you actually move in with me? Yes, I am. Campus housing allows for couples, even with someone who's not a student. We can make it work."

She gazed at him lovingly, before saying the one phrase that he had somehow forgotten in his teenage brain.

"But what about my parents?"

As he stammered to find an answer, she reached out a hand to pat him on the shoulder.

"We'll figure it out together," she offered, and then the two of them picked up their drinks to head off to the cinemas.

Perhaps it had been a ploy to get the Tumbran couple together, but it was galvanizing their relationship was well - and that was probably, overall, a great thing.

Now, about those parents of hers...

When she was considering the Chromatika job, Sandra Sybill had given two calls to previous Managers of the Anomalies - Lisa Amos and Silian Parker.

Lisa Amos, the Manager of the most successful side in Chromatik history - the side that placed fourth in World Cup 76 - said this about the Anomalies' tie to Chromatik politics:

"Because we have been tied to the Rainbow Revolution from the very beginning, the Anomalies have been and always will be an integral part of the Chromatik people. This means that what happens on and off the pitch can lead to political decisions being made, and that political influences can try to undermine the integrity of the team. We provide both a common ground for each and every Chromatik to agree upon whenever disagreements are rampant, as well as a bone that can be picked by any political influence that recognizes that if they can control what the team is saying, they can control the populace. This is why having players that have differing background and viewpoints is good. Let every player say as little or as much as they want, as long as it doesn't impact team cohesion nor team morale. Don't let the team become a mouthpiece for any political entity. Follow the lead of the Chromatik Football Federation - Viktor Karras, Jr. has made it his life mission to ensure that Chromatik politics stays out of Chromatik football as much as possible."

Silian Parker, the Manager who had heralded the usage of three central midfielders, which was what Sandra was basing her footballing philosophy on as well, added on:

"It's an exhausting position, to be the Manager. Don't let any of the scrutiny reach the players - try to keep its impact to you if at all possible. The team should be judged only by the results on the pitch, and nothing else. It's a lonely place to be, but it's worth it to be part of something that can motivate so many others in our country. Don't discount that - use that as the fuel to drive yourself. That will make all the politicking that is done toward you worthwhile."

However, nothing had prepared her for the intensity of having Nyowani Kitara in the same Qualifying group. Now, it was halftime at the Thunderdome in Tovaca, Tikariot, where the Nyowani Kitara National Team called their home stadium while the peace talks were going on. Chromatika had a narrow 4-3 lead at halftime, and the players looked to be a bit reeling considering the political ramifications of the game.

News had broken that Chromatika was present at the peace talks, albeit as a small representative. Everyone also knew that the Nyowani Kitara National Team represented the wishes of the current government, and that there had been some dissent within their locker room.

Some players like Enigma Armageddon wanted to speak in support of them. Some others shared the view that what the DFLK had to offer was actually valid. The majority wanted nothing to do with either side.

Remembering the words of her predecessors, Sandra addressed her players:

"Remember - we focus on what we can change out there. What we can do is take care of business and play the game that we love. Show our opponents the respect of getting our best shot, and take care of theirs. We let the politicians politick, and if we have things to say after the game, we do it then. On the pitch, do your job - play football. What you choose to do outside of the game, I'll leave up to you - as long as you show discretion that befits your station as an Anomalies player. Can we do that?"

Thankfully, everyone nodded. Thankfully, the team came out of the gate swinging, and Chromatika picked up the three points that they needed to keep pace in a very tight Group 6 that shows no signs of slowing down. Sargossa, Eura, Nyowani Kitara, even Taksylvania, there would be no easy points in the second half, and the team could ill afford to let the extenuating circumstances affect them.

What they could do to help every Chromatik was to play their hearts out and let the results do the talking - hopefully it'd be enough.
Part 1: The Twin Meetings
Part 2: The Book Moves
Part 3: Twin Surprises
Mirroring Paths
Part 4: The Cambian* Horse
*The Cambian Horse comes from a popular series of books in Chromatika known as the Great War of Baran. In it, one of the sides, the Cambians, tricked the Barani Empire by retreating and leaving a statue of a horse. As horses were sacred in Barani culture, the Barani Empire brought the sculpture in. That night, the Cambians that had been hidden in the horse emerged and the ambush paid off with the end of the Great War of Baran. That horse became known as the Cambian horse. (OOC Comment: Yes, this is the Trojan Horse.)
It can be said that modern Chromatik history started with the incorporation of the first national football team of Chromatika. Luuk Aart, the team's Captain, was under investigation by the Chromatik Party and the then-Chromatik government for masquerading as a Violet, someone in the upper castes of the Chromatik society, when he was born as a Red, a caste of laborers. When he was convicted despite not being complicit - Aart had had no knowledge - the Chromatik national team, led by Franscseca Larriet-Cortes, fled the country. They would spend a cycle using a stadium in Quebec as their home field, while events started to unfold in Chromatika.

The Rainbow Writers, a group of underground writers, started to spread propaganda supporting a free Chromatika while various rogue elements joined forces under the banner of what became known as the Rainbow Revolution. This Revolution, despite not having a singular leader, toppled the Chromatik Party, though Franscesca Larriet-Cortes was martyred in the process. The Chromatik Party was overthrown, and the Rainbow Revolution's interim government took power, finding an effective voice in Alina Krasnikova, the prior head of Chromatika's secret police that had turned her back on the principles of the Chromatik Party. Krasnikova became the first Premier of Chromatika, though she wasn't one that was voted into office.

Chromatika found itself facing multiple problems during the quest for its first free election not five years later. The remnants of the Chromatik Party had been spared due to keep the country's infrastructure intact after rudimentary inquiries were made to weed out the most offending members of the Chromatik Party regime. Now, many of them were proving to be a roadblock to Chromatika's future. Aided by an ally in Banija, Chromatika was successful in having its first free election, also employing the aid of The Chosen, a group of extraplanar angels whose fates had been tied to Chromatika by virtue of one of them interfering with Chromatik history. At the end, The Chosen were free to be their individual selves, and Chromatika had its first freely elected leader - Keri Wyse Aart.

Though Chromatika started to become a more stable nation, some underlying problems emerged. A group of people thought that the previous members of the Chromatik Party hadn't paid enough for their mistakes, while others looked at the plight of the previously oppressed population and claimed that the Rainbow Party wasn't doing enough to bring those people up to speed. Then, the Anaia-Atlantian Oceania split took the nation by storm, and though Chromatika decided to join the departing nations in Anaia, the fact that the country split from one of its closest political allies in Banija and the fact that most of the negotiations had been done behind closed doors wasn't taken well by the populace. Using this discordance as an ample opportunity, a crime syndicate called the Shadow Hand, a remnant of the Red Enclave that had been the first to oppose the Chromatik Party back before the Rainbow Revolution, started to make some bolder moves.

Recently, three events have shaken Chromatik politics to the very core. First, retired Chromatik footballer Han Ga-Yeong, a major supporter of the current Chromatik government and a spokeswoman for the rehabilitation of the previous ROYG community, was murdered. Not long after, a member of the Chambers of the Legislature, Chromatika's legislative branch, Jordan Lefebvre of the Traditionalist Party, was assassinated. Second, an explosion rocked one of the team buses of Chromatika's national team on the way back from Franscesca Larriet-Cortes International Airport, instantly killing the driver and injuring twelve others. Thankfully, none of the Chromatik footballers were badly injured, but the event proved to everyone that nobody was truly safe.

Finally, at the end of the most recent election, twenty-eight Representatives from the Rainbow Party and the Traditionalist Party joined forces to bring forth a new party, the Saebitdang, or the New Light Party. Hélène Embroise, the previous #1 confidant of Keri Wyse Art, the Premier, heads the New Light Party, breaking the supermajority of power that the Rainbow Party enjoyed and plunging the country into an uncertain future. "Tell me again," came an exasperated voice, "But be a bit more thorough this time. What in the world did Ambroise do?"

"Ma'am," countered the cool tone of Alina Krasnikova, the head of Chromatika's Secret Service and the first Premier of Chromatika, "Keri. You need to listen to me. There isn't much time - Ambroise is awaiting confirmation of her message. I know this is a lot to take in, but this is a situation that will blow up on our face if we don't address it. Do you understand me?"

Only two people in Keri Wyse Aart's life dared to speak to her like that. The first was her husband, Luuk. The other was Alina Krasnikova, her friend, leader, and now advisor. Premier Keri Wyse Aart gathered herself, took a deep breath, and nodded for Alina to continue.

"Apparently," stated the former Premier matter-of-factly, "Ambassador Saralee Ambroise has taken it upon herself to think that the Chromatik government should offer the NYK national team defectors asylum in our country, as a former nation who's been through a similar civil war. She mentioned how the Anomalies had to call Quebec home for a qualifying cycle, and how the results of that campaign were legendary in helping the spirits of the Revolution remain up through the difficult days when we were facing the Chromatik Party. She stated that she's willing to bear any of the circumstances - including being kicked out of the ambassador corps - as long as Chromatika offers asylum, with no strings attached, to the athletes to have political amnesty and safety while residing in our country. She said she'd already sent people to initiate contact. She just wants to make sure that we'll come through."

The Premier of Chromatika looked back at Alina with weariness in her eyes.

"She's forced us into a corner," admitted Krasnikova, "Once she's made the offer, it will cause an international incident to rescind it. We can discipline Ambroise behind the scenes, but anything public will have to wait until this situation is handled. Given what she's offered, we have two options: to follow through with the promises, or to decline. Declining would not be wise. We have to agree with her and hand over the opportunity."

Keri turned to the other person in the room - Han Gyung-Bin was one of her closest confidants and her chief secretary on the state of the Chambers of the Legislature. Clad as always in formal attire with his spectacles on his nose, Han looked as astute as ever, and remained calm despite the revelations that were being presented in front of him.

"What will the NLP do about this, do you think, Han?" inquired the Premier.

"That's hard to say," he replied evenly, "The NLP isn't anti-the national team of the NYK. The NLP is against Chromatika participating in open intervention against the current situation in NYK mostly because they want us to focus on domestic matters, but there is no saying what they'll say about us harboring defectors from the current regime. One can argue that the NLP isn't pro or against any of the sides vying for control - they just want Chromatika to stay out of it. Is having a defector of the NYK government staying out of it? Yes, if you mean direct intervention on NYK territory. No, if you mean intervention upon someone who has some influence on the situation. It'll depend on what Hélène and her gang decide to proclaim as their line."

As he saw Keri frown, he raised a hand as to interrupt her reply.

"However, this does provide an interesting opportunity that we didn't have before," started Han, "If we actually campaign Ambassador Ambroise's idea - that of sheltering a player who is going against his government, and liken it to how the Anomalies were exiled during the Rainbow Revolution - we can garner a lot of public sympathy and support. The Chromatik people remember the days of the Rainbow Revolution, and this can bring the nation together in support of the defectors. We will, of course, have to make sure that things don't get carried too far - keep it at the tone of 'we value the voice of the defectors and that everyone should be allowed to say what they think', - or risk the ire of going against what Nephara, Eura, and the other supporters of the current regime of Nyowani Kitara wish. However, as long as our message is measured and controlled, this could be exactly what we were looking for in terms of a way to unify the country."

"Will that work?" Keri turned to Alina, "What do your sources tell you?"

"I don't think too many members of the international community will care too much," answered the spymaster, "Eura themselves have admitted the families, and technically these are families of players who spoke out against the party that Eura are supporting - albeit with the caveats that have come with that. The whole situation is a mess, and regardless of how the talks shake out, Nyowani Kitara will hardly remain the same country that it was. I seriously doubt that countries in Rushmore are going to care about us winning points domestically among our own people. We'll give whomever that decides to come - if any do - the opportunity to speak their thoughts from here, we'll win some points domestically abroad, and hopefully, call it a day. The wildcard remains the NLP - and what Embroise will want."

Alina and Han stopped as they saw Keri's mood suddenly shift. The Premier went from a contemplative posture to a mournful one, and the two of them looked upon her with concern.

"You're right, Han," started Aart, "We should capitalize on this. I'm ashamed that I couldn't see it myself, if I'm being honest with you. I remember the days of the Rainbow Revolution - I was lucky enough to be able to go to Quebec during the days of exile to be with Luuk, but it was a demanding, hard time for everyone. I can only imagine what the NYK National Team defectors are facing, and if we in Chromatika can do anything to help them, we should."

She turned to Alina wearily. "Give Ambroise my go-ahead," she started, "And tell her that she can provide them a declaration with my seal on it if they need confirmaton from a higher authority that I will come through on my word. Then, thank her for taking the initiative, and have her send them here as soon as possible. She doesn't need to come with them, she can stay there to keep an eye on the talks." Alina nodded fervently.

She then turned to Han, saying, "Go give Viktor a call and see if any Orange League sides need foreigners. If we're going to have footballers, we might as well give them a place to play - and I'm sure some clubs will want capable players. Also, try to gauge what the NLP will say about this, and give me a preliminary report as soon as possible. We will need to stay on top of it."

Han bowed and left the room briskly to get to work.

"I've been doing this for a term and some by now," started the Premier, a faraway look in her eyes, "And I'm disgusted by just how politics truly works. We are capitalizing on a foreign nation going through a civil war and then having foreign nations with their own interests intervene in order to suit our own interests. Isn't that a little bit appalling? I know that's how the game is played, and if given the opportunity, the NLP wouldn't even flinch, but it's just a shame that so many of the best moves in politics comes at the expense of others - the majority of the time, others that don't even know about the game being played at all."

"That's true, Ma'am," replied Alina, "That's why it matters who plays the game, and that's why it matters to have someone like you leading the country - someone who can keep the best interests in mind."

Keri laughed weakly, before responding, "Our version of what is the best four our country. Well, thankfully, we believe in it enough to do what we do, don't we?"

Then, the edge returning to her face, she declared with purpose, "Let's get to work. We have a way to galvanize our country behind a common cause, and we won't let it go to waste."

As ten o'clock rang in her house, Hélène Embroise found herself filled with a familiar dread, waiting to see if it was a night that one of those kinds of visits would occur.

Ever since the New Light Party was established, she'd been visited - oh, what, a hundred times? It was hard to keep track. They didn't have any regularity nor schedule; the only thing that she could count on was that if it was going to happen, it would happen at ten, and she'd be back by ten fifteen. She had no idea how they carried her from her house and back while having a conversation in between - for surely, they must have moved her elsewhere, with where she always found herself having the conversation with the hooded figure, the disembodied voice, in a location that was so distinctly not her own house - and she'd grown to just accept the reality that as of now, she was a puppet.

She had believed in the premise of the New Light Party. Keri Wyse Aart and the Rainbow Party's policies were far too much outward facing, and the Traditionalists were too busy trying to cover up their tracks from when they were part of the Chromatik Party to not take direct action. She'd intended it to be akin to taking a different fork on the same road that the Rainbow Party was on, but all of that went out the window the first time that she had been taken.

Now, she did what she wanted, but she followed the directions of the voices that promised that they'd leave her family alone as long as she cooperated. For the sake of her sister, her nephews, and her parnts, she had to play along. Sure, part of what they wanted aligned with her goals, but they were a bit more extreme - and she found herself starting to think the way that they did as she carried upon their whims in the meetings and the plans that she had with the other members of the NLP.

There came the same calibrated pitch that she was accustomed to, and then the knocking out sensation; momentarily, she was back in that ambiguous space, with the silhouette of the disembodied voice.

"Representative Embroise," the voice dictated, "We've some news for you. Apparently, Chromatika will be contacting some of the defectors of the Nyowani Kitara National Team to offer them asylum. Chromia intends to use this as a way to galvanize the populace into commiserating with the defecting players, and remind them of what it was like to have a national team that had been stationed abroad during the Anomalies' exile. It is, to be quite honest, an inspired, genius move, and one that doesn't quite go against our goals."

Per usual, Hélène's body didn't allow her to respond, not that the voice cared at all. It carried on after a brief pause.

"However, we will not let Chromia have anything without paying for it. They will need you to not make a big fuss over it in order for this message to the public to be carried out to the fullest extent. You will press the envelope, ask them to make a concession in order for you to not oppose them on this front. Especially since some of the defectors are against the current regime of Nyowani Kitara, which is actually in the interests of Banija, we will ask Chromia to make a huge concession in order for this to be allowed to happen."

When she was returned home, after she awoke from the effects of whatever they hit her with every time, Hélène would remember the absolute smugness and joy that the voice expressed - as much as a voice is able to do when the figure isn't visible - as it stated the next words.

"In exchange for not combatting the acceptance of the defectors to asylum, I want you to demand - well, forcibly request - that the Chromatik government accelerate the timetable on the CP Sponsorship Program. It's time that we made those that were willingly mislead pay for their mistakes, and that the people who were under the oppressive boots helped to reach freedom from poverty."

"Once again, I remind you that your family's continued safety depends on your lobbying and the results," concluded the voice, "Best of luck, Ms. Embroise."

The CP Sponsorship Program was a brainchild of those that controlled her, as well as the others of her Party once she'd suggested the idea. It was a plan to have any surviving members of the now-defunct Chromatik Party pay a stipend every month (the exact amount would be determined by their wealth, as well as their position in the then-Chromatik government) to sponsor those that were still recovering from the then-ROYG community. It had support from those that thought that past sins had to be paid, but faced opposition from those who had stated that the past was the past and Chromatika was moving on. The fact that the NLP had brought this forward had been a massive problem in the Chambers of the Legislature - the Traditionalists hated it altogether, while the majority of the Rainbow Party had internal conflicts between having stated that they wouldn't ask for reparations and acknowledging that members of the populace being asked to pay for the education needed would help the government.

Now, she was being asked to use this opportunity as a way to get the Rainbow Party to acquiesce. It was cruel, it was dynamic, it was brilliant.

Though she knew that she was being partially coerced to do this, Hélène Embroise couldn't help but feel a pang of excitement as she visualized just how Keri Wyse Aart and the Rainbow Party would handle her request.

It was time to send in a Cambian Horse - except this time, the Rainbow Party would actually know what it was, and yet be forced to receive it anyway or face the consequences.

Simple. Elegant. Brilliant. Cruel.

Such was Chromatik politics.

Sequel?

Gabriel Giivarze kept on waiting for Shane to come back. One hour, two hours, three hours and at last on half past three hours he came back. Three hours weren't so boring for Gabriel, who is one of the best cartoonist in Indusse's History. He is known for his Magazine called Scribbler which is full of Cartoons drawn by him under his pen name "Gabby".

S: Hey! Sorry for keeping you waiting. It took a lot of time didn't it? The Players wanted to win the upcoming matches so i decided to extend the training schedule as well as made them attend a motivation class.

G: It's all fine Mr.Newman. It's what we all want, we need the team to win and get to the qualifiers so why should you feel sorry for being late for giving them good coaching?

S: *smiles* Yeah, we've been done with the first half and now it's the time for the second half of the group matches. Winning each and every match would get the team to qualify no matter what but we aren't sure about that. We shall do our best and we want to win and get into the qualifiers.

G: Yes, but i have a question related to the coaching for you. Wouldn't extending the training period increase chance for getting injuries? I think we are not at a situation where we can handle Injuries.

S: Yeah you're right, the chances increase with the place they practice, the stuff they do as well as their fitness at that point of time. I always say yes for extra training but i don't allow them to get into complex training or excercise but just simple stuff. Things more simple would reduce the injury chances.

G: Oh, yeah. That's a major change you brought into the camp while you arrived. I remember.

S: So, where were we? What was the last question you asked?

G: We were talking about Baskar Kumar's successor to the Captaincy of Indussean National team. Who would that be?

S: Ah yes, but no. I did say about this earlier. It's a surprise and I'm not interested to discuss more on that topic yet.

G: I'm sorry, i was given a task and i tried to get enough information for completing it. Tell me about your future plans for the team. What's going to change with the team after this world cup?

S: The Main change as you know would be the lack of presence of Baskar, New Captains and New Players. Other than that, I plan to have friendlies with different teams in the Multiverse preferably those above Top 100 of the world rankings. I've already decided to have one with our Satelite State or more as a princely state known as Treekidistan. Who did win the Baptism of Fire tournament once and is playing pretty well now a days. Them doing well is really a good achievement for the nation too since they coach is literally a native Indussean and the nation is under Indussean Union.

G: How has been the rest of the group till now. Who have a better to chance to qualify if we don't?

S: Nephara, a long time veteran team and former champion would be my first choice. They always keep up their standard of play and qualifies for the World Cup. Secondly I've Independent Athletes from Quebec on my mind. They're now literally a long time rival to the nation. This isn't the first time the team is facing them consecutively. They're literally a good nation with cool players who can get their team into great extent. Then the last hope is Milchama, who seem to be doing quiet good stuff.

G: That's all Shane, it's getting late I believe. You guys have to get ready for tommorow's match. Wishing you and your team all the best! Make us proud!

S: Thank you. It's all your hope and our hardwork which helps us to get into greater extent.
