Shinonome Kyoai - International

The last phase of the qualifiers, eyes on the World Cup

Kandorith is in a perfect situation to qualify already, with just four matchdays to go in the World Cup 91 Qualifiers. The strong looking team headed by Michiyu has so far managed to remain undefeated and, with only four draws, they are looking in excellent form. For the Kandorese, there will be three matchdays left: Indusse, South Newlandia, and Saint Eleanor.

Kandorith currently leads Group 10 with a 43-point lead, six points ahead of Saint Eleanor, after defeating Armbruster 5-3 and drawing with Reorganized Portugal. The only threat to the Kandorese qualification right now would be a disastrous last part of the campaign and not gaining any further points, but this is unlikely to happen as the national team looks on top of their form and ready for the World Cup.

For Michiyu, the mission is clear and this is to keep the team ahead of the direct competition in numbers 2 and 3 in the group and make sure the team does not drop any points in the last few games. Right now, as it stands, it seems that World Cup 91 will be added to the list of success stories of Michiyu’s career and the Kandorese will once again have the joy of seeing their team stand on the international stage of the World Cup.

The calm Michiyu, overlooking the field and instructing the players on how to play, has become a familiar sight for Kandorese football fans. Mostly clad in fashionable black, grey, and red, the manager seemingly always has a grin on their face. The grin was explained. Michiyu said in an interview that they just could not help but grin when managing the national team; "It is an honour and a dream come true, and honestly, I always feel a little bit privileged and proud when I stand on the sideline of an international match." Michiyu said.

With assistant Hijiri Yoshida, the Kandorese national team has been in form for the past World Cups, and seemingly there is a great synergy between the team, the coaching staff, and Michiyu themselves, all leading to the everything or nothing type of football that travels all over the pitch. While Michiyu still likes to call it total football, it is more of an all-out attack with passing triangles. Although Michiyu seems to enjoy the current style of the Kandorese national team, some have criticised it as there have been quite a few goals against the Kandorese team.

Michiyu answered most of the criticism with a statement on the state of the Kandorese team with the words: "We scored at least one more goal than the opposing team. That makes us the winner of the match." right? It does not matter how many goals are scored against us, as long as we score more goals than them, we have reached our win". While the defence of the Kandorese team is a topic of constant debate, the leading position in Group 10 speaks for itself. Michiyu’s tactics are working for the national squad.

The new corporate war

Something is brewing in the world of real estate and construction and it's not a hot meal, the flowing champagne, or concrete and steel.
By Hiromi Sugihara
General
ImageSHARE THIS: Image Image Image Image

As cities like Tenkyo and Ginza are ever-expanding, there’s a certain dark side to the new high-rise buildings and beautifully designed areas popping up everywhere. While most people will not think twice about having a nice new apartment in the middle of the beautiful cities across our nation, the corporate world thinks very differently about this.

The sight of multiple construction companies and equipment suppliers is almost everywhere, as complete city centres are receiving massive overhauls, as are the architects and design companies, cashing in on the overzealous contracts from both the national and local governments.

The rise of these companies is not just in the massive manpower and contracts, however. Scientists and even security companies have started to meddle in the construction market to try and capture parts of the contracts. Gascorp has been working with Red Diamond Industries to find more efficient, cheap, and powerful means of fuel and energy, while Kaito Corporation has been working on new technologies for fire and disaster prevention for the newest buildings. Hiyashi Biotec has also appeared on the housing market and has been involved in projects aimed at improving healthcare, food, and even designing multiple parks.

While to the general population it is very much welcomed, it’s not all smiles and good fortune. The rush for innovation and new materials has seen a massive surge in sabotage, theft, and even cases of aggravated assault and murder on multiple construction sites and within multiple companies. As it stands now, some of the higher-profile cases could indeed jeopardize entire large-scale projects aimed at affordable housing.

With many people currently displaced because of ongoing construction, there is a fear of a sharp rise in homelessness and crime on the streets as some people have no place to go while their buildings are being renovated or built completely anew. Next to a fear of rising criminality, Hiyashi Biotech has raised concerns about diseases spreading or the possibility of people dying from starvation. The Kandorese government has assured people that there will be an emergency measure in place within days and will take the delays in the housing market very seriously. Right now, a quick short-term solution is in the works, after which the Imperial Mandate will be looking towards a long-term solution and new housing laws.

Boot It!: 4 Points In 3 Games + "It's On Fire"

Postby TJUN-ia » Thu May 26, 2022 4:16 pm

By Peter Davis

After a rare period of getting the maximum 6 points from a WCQ cycle, the Jaguars of TJUN-ia found themselves 4 points off the Top 3 with 5 to play - a position that perfectly encapsulates the current mood around this team - "Down, But Not Out". We may be in a position that isn't exactly enviable at this point in the campaign, but we were not out by any stretch of the imagination...and we have to remember that above all else. David Seems and Li Xiu Ying tried to hammer that point home to a lot of people within the football community, that this was a war and not a battle and that we had to go out there and prove we belonged in this conversation.

But did we really? Maybe this first game would be telling, a chance at revenge against Ziwana in our debut in front of the UAC crowd at the Estadio Universidad Carlandas. They have been clamouring for years for Los Jaguares to finally cross the border into the UAC Zone and finally, the fans would finally get that day they have been hoping for. They certainly brought the thunder and the passion you'd expect from the region, but it was only a shame that the game they finally got to see wasn't the most exciting or fun in the slightest. Both TJUN-ia and Ziwana were certainly hungry for points in this contest and while both teams had chances, no breakthrough could be reached. A 0-0 draw meant that, even after all this time, TJUN-ia still can't beat those damn Scorchers from Ungwazi wa Ziwana - a thorn in our side we will carry to our graves. Bollonich beat Schima Bas 2-1. The gap was up to 6 with 4 to play.

That meant that our next game, a 5th vs 4th showdown in Cardenao, had turned into a must-win...and we all certainly knew that. The Blue and Golds were a team in form who were certainly proving to everyone that they can tango in their debut WCC Cycle, but I hope Scooter McNash understands that we had a job to do and his team just so happened to be in the way. No hard feelings at all for the 3-1 win we managed to achieve here. Prince Carter and Archer Andrews both found a way past Ray Holland before halftime and while Ibai Acosta-Vargas managed to get on back in the 54th, Max van Oosterend would put this game to bed in the 76th. Bollonich drew with Ziwana, 2-2 this time - and the gap was back to 4 with 3 to play.

And now, we enter the stressful cycle and one where our fate is out of our hands - República Guanacasteca comes here as the NAU makes its debut at the magnifique Stade de la Victoire in Roi Ville, before our final bye. We play once, Bollonich play twice and we know that we will be mostly looking at other results to alter our fate in this cycle. Let's just see where the dice roll, shall we? GO JAGS!

And now for something completely different...

IT'S ON FIRE
A TJUN-ian perspective on the topics of others.
A parody of In Corpore Sano by Konstrakta.
Inspired by the works of Chartistan, which are most certainly superior to us in this field.

What the hell is going on?

Can someone please tell me what is going on now?
Can someone tell me?
Can someone please tell me what is going on now?
Can someone tell me? (Can someone please tell me?)
Because we see
That Rushmore right now is just a massive mess, man.
Because we see
That everywhere else is full of twists and turns.
For example, let's discuss Nyowani Kitara
And It's election, one filled with intrigue.
Which way is this one gonna go?
Which way is it gonna go?
Either way, it's gonna be fun(?).

When we see the world, it's on fire.
It's on fire. It's on fire. It's on fire.
It's, It's, It's, It's on fire.
It's on fire. It's on fire.
All and all around us!

What even is Pavloa?
We thought that was just a dessert?
And then there's Cassadaigua,
with its crown in a tangle,
with Cassie the third the one who should win out here.
Wait a minute, we are the TJUN-ians, we cannot have opinions...on stuff like that.
Shit. We may have fucked up in that regard, but we have to continue,
So let's just move on right now. Jedan, dva, tri!
And then there is Tumbra! - Land of Kerr and Trudy,
Full of politics that can make everyone moody.
Their groupmates are Adab and we have a simple question:
Where is Alu? Where is Alu? Where is Alu?
(Where is Alu?) We are all concerned.

The squids have an anarchist, (It's on fire)
What about the Northlands? (It's on fire)
There is so much shit that's going on (It's on fire)
But we have to sit back and just watch. (It's on fire)

When we see the world, it's on fire.
It's on fire. It's on fire. It's on fire.
It's, It's, It's, It's on fire.
It's on fire. It's on fire.
All and all around us!

It is on fire, it is on fire.
It is on fire, it is on fire.
It is on fire, it is on fire.
What can we all do with all this shit?
World Cup Qualifying is on fire,
Geopolitics is on fire,
This Serbian song is on fire,
Everything here is just on fire,
So what do we do?

Adam Denby: "I thought to myself 'wait, I'm a fan favourite now?'"
Chief Football Correspondent Jamie Rodgers chats with Occidental Olympic's other star about self-sacrifice, sacrifice of others, and rubber chicken sacrifice
Originally published on Wednesday 19th January 2000

There is something of an old joke that's been circulating in Occidental Olympic's closest-knit fan circles for more than a few years now: "If you need your walls redone, ask Chloe Denby. If you need your scoreboard redone, ask Adam Denby." Despite being one of the most prolific residents of the Parkside Stadium in recent years, however, he insists that "I like it here, and I honestly think almost everyone does."

Much like John Bailey, the other child of fallen war veterans, Denby is willing - with more than a touch of regret - to talk about his father, Christian. "Now look, Chris was a big guy. Not too tall, no, but he was a huge figure in Parkside, helped people out with their houses when they got into shit, everybody knew him, everybody loved him - they wanted him to get out of the war alive but he didn't. He just didn't! Those wankers bombed somewhere or other in Sunset Gates and now look where they're all at now! I've said it before but I think I love Parkside because of him, honestly - and my mum got inspired by him after we won our freedom to become a decorator, make people relaxed where they are, just improve the local environment, I'd say. He'd think it still has great people doing great things today; I definitely do." Naturally, he attended Parkside CS and insisted that "I made more than a few friends there, studied a bit, helped the teachers out with cleaning up the rubbish and sorting out classrooms and all that stuff when I could, but on the whole, proper job. School was good, cup run was good, my time at Olympic's been good and quite honestly everything about my life since then has been good. No regrets whatsoever."

The Parkside team of 1991, when Denby played in his Charles Trump Shield, was not particularly extraordinary. "I was literally the only player in that team who did anything much with football. A few of us went off to the Uni, Dan [Barton] became an electrician like my dad - good luck to him on that - Miranda [Preston], who I thought was going to become the good footballer out of all the others in the team, is... working at one of the local primaries now? Yeah, she is, I was really close friends with her at school and it's sad when you think about how much you lost when you find out you're not really talking to people these days. Anyway, it was a fairly standard run for a fairly standard team, easy wins over a few non-club-linked district teams, but the real challenge was against the Army School - Oaktree, Army School, whatever, I think the names are interchangeable - in the last sixteen back when they still produced hard ones who weren't afraid to push you all over and find out what had happened. It was 0-0 for most of the game but that doesn't mean there wasn't excitement because we had a lot of players trying to get at them, both teams were down to ten ultimately, then the School scored a bit from the end when they were much less tired than us and that is, quite honestly, that."

When pressed about what three games influenced his development as a professional most, he's quick off the mark: "1994, 2-1 against Grand Beach. Obviously Julia Atherton's retired and they're in transition a bit these days, but in the early 1990s, these guys were huge business - they'd came third the previous year, the one I'd started playing in, and were hungry for something like it again. And we were the ones transitioning back then! Everybody I know will be able to tell you what Fetakela Manuta was doing at the time but we had a new striker, Dekky [Dekamela weMexala], coming in and I always had the gut feeling I'd be the one going all over the pitch trying to score, she'd be the sensible poacher-type one who didn't go too far out. It was early in the season, perhaps a bit too early to judge, but I'd say it definitely worked out well. The Seasiders found themselves an early lead when a corner was swung into Callum McArthur - Callum McArthur! - and he could only nod the ball into the big rectangular ropey thing. This time, we bloody well were panicking, but Andy Packer chose to pump a free-kick a ridiculous way up the pitch midway through the first half, I got hold of it, just pitched it above Julia and 1-1 at the half, it was. So far, so good, I'd forced a couple of other chances and I think one of them should have gone in, but I hit the jackpot at seventy minutes when Dekky got the ball, slid it my way, and I just hit it first time, in off the post and there you have it. When I opened The Reporter the next day, the headline screamed 'Olympic fan favourite Denby spurs comeback,' and then I thought to myself 'wait, I'm a fan favourite now?' I think I was, come to think of it."

Next up for Denby is Olympic's 3-1 home win against Athletic Saint Eleanor in 1996. "At that point, the Reds were four points clear and... if everything else had gone right on their end, it would have meant another title for them, really. They weren't huge rivals of us, I don't think we have any serious enemies, but we weren't really in a good position and Manuta had been forced into a bit of a tactical revamp around the start of the season to arrest the couple of bad years of form we'd been having. Mixed results that year, but I'd say that 3-1 wasn't just the high point of the season, but honestly, it was a turning point for our ethos, too. We took control of the game, they didn't, we scored first and quickly - I helped Dekky out this time - they struggled to hit back and in all seriousness, we were having a lot of fun out there. Our defence was a bit sloppy but none of that was my fault, I was just out there meshing with the new system, offering help, cutting through defences we'd had a bit of an issue with, just watching the scoreline go up - and I had a goal of my own, edge of the D, bit of a tight spot, tried dinging the ball under the sweet curly spot and then all of a sudden, lead's doubled to 3-1 again and we were all happy and ready and set and going and all that flowery language. Shades of the recent Ochre game because that game was a bit similar to this when you take into account the context, shades of 1995 because in the end, Athletic threw away the title again - and by a lot. Hopefully we can pull through this time, even if I might be tempted to ask a couple of Milchamans for help with the rubber chickens this time - I'm not saying I have but let's just say we only came fifth come the end of that season!"

His final selection is the 1-0 win at Independence 1975 halfway through the 1998 season. "Everyone who's associated with Olympic will have at least one game from '98 they remember from our title run - but in terms of grit, determination and impact, it has to be the Indy win. Everybody loves Bridget [Coombe], I don't need to explain why, but she made a silly mistake against Good Hope the other round - even she knew it - and... big blow, yeah. But we got Peffo [Pefachela Etchalix] over there, a bit old, needed a bit of onboarding by Samuel Short and the rest, no need to panic. Between the psychological blow and the honest-to-God we-need-to-make-the-Challengers'-Cup-or-someone's-getting-sacked stakes, I felt a lot of pressure coming down on me, but did I need to metaphorically cream myself? No! This game was, first and foremost, not about me: I've told you why plus the only couple of attempts I had were either woefully off target or easily blocked. What it was about was teamwork, getting to our objectives, helping one other when possible - it's the Olympic way now - and getting far up enough the pitch to make sure that Indy made silly mistakes. My favourite Indy mistake was fifteen minutes before the end when I tried to lay off a pass to Dekky but Luke Elliott honestly thought he got to it, no problem. He didn't - Steve Pilchard got the ball, nearly ran into John Bailey and ended up giving us the lead!"

Denby has been called up for the past two World Cups as well as the infamous 82nd Cup of Harmony but is not yet playing a significant role, being sidelined in favour of Katie O'Donnell and weMexala while only scoring one goal in four qualifiers since last year, away to Sannyamathland. "That is certainly one way to deal with the Communists, now, isn't it? The win at home to Fort McKinley was huge, too, and I got subbed on towards the end of that, but it's unfortunate I didn't really contribute a lot." Who has he felt particularly touched by during his relatively nondescript time with the White Stars? "John's had a bit of a similar upbringing as me, hard-working war widow, love of football, acceptance of better people than us in the team and he's one of the best footballers in the nation at the moment, hands down. Elsewhere, David Newcastle really is as solid and consistent as he always makes himself out to be and he doesn't take any nonsense. And the starting strikers - Katie talks so much I want to cut my ears off, Dekky isn't universally popular either and she seems to take literally everything you can imagine as it comes, but I like both of them, they're good players, more cut out for regular starts at this level than I am, here's to more from them." Does he have any words for anyone else at Olympic? "All of you lot are really nice people, trust me!"

Is Adam Denby a striker? That's a close approximation, but with his willingness to play the ball from all positions, come up with any sort of magic to fool the defence and employ trickery off the ball, too, it's hard to pin him down anywhere on the pitch. More straight-talking than smooth as a person, however, he's always wanted to help people out and develop a good reputation with each mask - and few would argue that he has failed at that task.

Why? George Mitcham, General then and now, cofounded the National Liberation Front in 1971 to demand a free Saint Eleanor. He got his wish in '75 after a 15-month war: becoming President, appointing notable NLF friends and some charity's executive director as VPs and calling them legislators. He has retained power through oil money; zero income tax; free healthcare, schooling, public transport - and markets; tolerating dissent on apolitical matters; allowing private gun ownership (with plenty of training) to protect against future invasions; high-quality PR; and football.

"In my interview with Lorete de Vry he mentioned that Bénigne Cixous had an interest in conspiracy theories."

Charles d'Aaci attempted to tamper his nervousness as he spoke to his fellow Task Force members. Eloise de Saint-Seine, who already knew what Charles was going to present and bought into what Charles was going to argue, was in the corner of his vision trying not to laugh.

Charles continued. "One website Cixous apparently frequented was Disap, an image board known for discussions of those kinds of topics. I was curious if there was any discussion there on mysterious disappearances or the like. That's where I found a link to this video." He reached out to the laptop and clicked play on the already-loaded video.

As the video played, Charles tried to keep a neutral face on. He earnestly believed there was something here, but the presentation left a lot to be desired. Charles' eyes kept darting from the screen to the three men across the table.

After a very long one minute and twenty-two seconds, the video came to an end. Gwenel Abrassart was the first to speak. "Did you have to search through a lot of garbage to find this?" he asked.

Charles breathed out, shaking his head. "So much garbage."

Roland de Blanchefort leaned back in his chair. "So whoever created this video says that their mother disappeared after discovering some kind of secret of Oberour Ar Moro."

"And then they wrote," Charles noted, reading from his notes, "'my mother disappeared, and all of the videos she had made were gone'. Saying that the mother’s videos disappeared is extremely interesting because that essentially happened with Bénigne Cixous. His social media accounts and his e-mail account at his work with Mercury Sports were deleted. His phone was still in his apartment but was wiped."

Eloise jumped in. "We have evidence of other missing persons where something very similar occurred. Number 18 Juluan Warusful, for example. He was a burgeoning social media influencer, but all of his accounts vanished immediately after his disappearance."

Anthelme de Rulhière looked up from the binder he had been reading. "Even for the most serious thefts of classified information and the like, the operating procedure for the Ministry of Justice is to secure the suspect's various internet accounts for evidence collection and to search for possible accomplices. That video,” he gestured to the laptop, “still could have been made by a crackpot, but there could be something to this."

"Though what does it mean?" Roland asked, scratching behind his left ear. "Oberour Ar Moro has internet censorship and monitors internet access, and technology and telecommunications companies assist in this. But for that theft of classified information you mentioned Anthelme, once the perpetrator is located they're arrested and tried. A lot of manpower goes into that."

"So it's the result of some kind of algorithm?" Eloise asked. "If some kind of program or whatever it could be connected to what happens with the Sqwire database.”

"It's definitely worth looking into deeper," Roland stated. He turned again to Charles. "Just be careful not to end up down a blind alley. We're taking a lot of inspiration from an anonymous video."

Rebels Deal Blow to Empire on Hothi'icei Battleground

Image
Hothi'icei Battleground, Wamtaun Peak, Terrarokka Range, Vilita :: The morning of the Jungle Rebels fight with the Empire, fans of the Vilitan National Team perplexing arrived at Terrasport Park, home of the Terrarokka Spirit - a club that regularly bounced between the Vilitan Declasse Division and the Tropicorp Lower Leagues without ever accomplishing much to be noteworthy. It certainly was not a venue familiar with hosting National Team Matches. They were also advised that they had to arrive 6 hours before kick off or they would not be able to enter the venue. These constraints naturally limited demand for the tickets which were also selling at nearly triple the regular rate for such a match. Still, with the #1 team in the multiverse traveling to Vilita, there were more than enough dedicated fans willing to shell out and arrive early for the match.

When the fans started arriving in the early dawn hours at Terrasport Park, however, they were directed onto the stadium concourse where they went through a check line. The very first thing: Surrender your communication devices. For many fans, their communication devices were basically an extension of their person. Yet here they were being told to bag and tag their devices. They would get to hang onto them, giving some comfort to those who could not part, but otherwise unusable sealed in communication-blocking baggies. Those who refused were sent down another line where they were given the option of either watching the match from a special viewing area at Terrasport Park or getting a refund on the spot and a ticket home.

For those who were committed to seeing the game no matter the cost, they would then proceed to the next station along the concourse. The cold weather station. To maintain the secrecy of the venue, the Vilitan Football Association did not provide any warning to fans that the temperature would be anything but seasonal for the match. Luckily it was a cool day in Northern Vilita and some fans had already come in pants and a light overcoat but even they were woefully under dressed for the conditions on the Wamtaun Peak. Heavy jackets, pants, snow boots and head coverings were available in a range of sizes and any fans who had their doubts raised at this point saw them immediately erased when they learned that they would get to keep all of the winter weather-attire after the event, not immediately processing the fact that it was baked into the cost of the ticket that they had paid initially and was the reason for the price hike.

Once the fans got through the stations and were fully prepared for the conditions on the peak, they were led out directly onto the pitch at Terrasport Park where two technologically advanced heli-flyers were parked - one in each half. A load of fans would fill into the flyers which would bring them to the Hothi'icei plateau just below the top of the Wamtaun Peak where they would exit the flyer and take in their surroundings before getting a second safety briefing regarding their surroundings. A total of 14 heli-flyers ensured a constant flow of fans to the peak filling out somewhere between 12,000-20,000 temporary seats constructed along the side of the icey field. The temporary structures offered the fans some protection from the wintry conditions and each fan had a bucket full of hand warmers under their seat to stuff where they pleased on their person throughout the match. The same could not be said for the players on the pitch who were fully exposed to the elements, necessitating the complete coverage offered by the Jungle Rebels 3WD designed environmentally tailored uniforms.

When the match got underway, it was evident that there was at least a small semblance of an advantage for Endur Rotropii's team if for no other reason than their totally normal and well-fitting clothing was providing the Jungle Rebels the optimum range of athletic motion compared with the not-quite-right for the environment attire that the Holy Empire players were wearing and layering up on to keep themselves from sprouting too many extra mutations throughout the course of the match.

Given their performances in key moments earlier in the campaign it was perhaps no surprise when the Tilkara siblings stepped up for the Jungle Rebels to take down the Empire's primary defenses. The Tlikara's ran circles around the Empire's defenders and tripped them up at every opportunity, ultimately capitalizing in the 16th minute through a goal from Kunaro Tlikara. Once the team saw exactly how to take down the Empire's defenses, they tried replicating the move on their next possession and sure enough Treasvo Tlikara was able to perform the exact same move that Kunaro had employed just minutes earlier, advancing forth and beating the Empire's three-headed netminder Isaac Paraspondylo who really should have seen the move coming, all things considered.

From there the Jungle Rebels would settle in a bit as The Holy Empire began playing an advanced game of keep-away to limit the damage that the Jungle Rebels could inflict while the imperial footballers continued acclimating to their surroundings. After having been one of the players tripped up after being effectively hog-tied by the Tlikara's earlier in the match, six-legged midfielder Romanos Adrianuso was key to the Empire's keep-away play able to park in the corner of the pitch and protect the ball vigorously with each pair of legs.

Ultimately, after some adaptation, the Empire started to play ball. Endur Rotropii had already used one of the Vilita National Team's substitutes when Diamoa Waviino went down hard trying to poke in between three of the legs of Romanos Adrianuso and the youngster Takaara Milanzi came in their place. The Holy Empire would get their first goal of the game just minutes from the half time interval when Jorge Sphrantzes was able to utilize their frozen extra hands coming out of their buttocks as a protective shield to set up an opportunity delivering a ball in to Jose Miguel Arianites. While the delivery was way too high for a totally normal attempt on goal, Arianites was fortunate to be carrying an extra pair of feet on his wrists enabling an arm-enabled bicycle kick. The referees for the match who were already a little peeved at being on the top of a mountain when they had packed for the Vilitan Coast decided not to review the play, determined the ball was last touched by a foot, called it a good goal and then blew the half time whistle so they could get the heck out of the wind and into some shelter for fifteen minutes.

During the second half of the match the possession game began to balance itself out again though the Holy Empire would temporarily claw back to level the scores at 2 goals a piece when Michael Ducaso grew two rows of blinking eyes down each arm in a totally normal accidental mutation that distracted the entire Vilitan defense and allowed Ducaso to level the scores. The Jungle Rebels were getting some good action from halftime substitute Antiviv Davaflei but the real impactful moment came in the 78th minute when a near frozen Trezisi Rokopolis was removed in favor of a warm and rested Riku Kasslin. Within minutes of being on the field Kasslin had what looked to be the winning goal called back due to offside. Less than five minutes later, Kasslin provided the delivery for Jakku'u Naboyavi, the last hope who had received halftime words of encouragement from first half goalscorer Treasvo Tlikara. Naboyavi fired past
Paraspondylo allowing the Jungle Cats to re-take the lead and sending the more boisterous of the Vilitan fans in attendance into song and dance. The un-natural decibel level for the area caused a minor avalanche that uniformly dumped nearly two inches of fresh powder across the field with larger amounts on the originating end of the field forcing the evacuation of the stands behind Zelikki Milake Jr's goal and saw one corner of the goal nearly entirely filled with snow that had come off that end. There was a nearly eight minute delay as they attempted to dig part of the net clear but it seemed the referees had enough and opted not to factor the extra time in at the end of the game, blowing the full time whistle just two minutes after play resumed, securing the match for the Rebels in a famous victory over the Empire.

While the Jungle Rebels managed to claim victory in this frigid battle against the Empire, they were still a long way from winning the war. The Holy Empire still held a narrow advantage atop the Group 13 table and the Vilitan National Team would have to win each of their remaining matches while also hoping that the totally normal yet constantly mutating players from the dreamed realm would slip up at least one more time and allow Rotropii's Rebels a way through to the top spot in the group and Automatic Qualification to World Cup 91. If they could not, then it would be back to the playoffs for the Jungle Rebels - where they struggled and ultimately faltered during the 89th World Cup Cycle after missing out on Automatic Qualification in a tight battle with Kandorith then were eliminated from the World Cup Finals after a penalty shootout in a two-legged playoff against Squidroidia.

In addition to the ultimate prize of Group 13 - the groups lone automatic berth into the World Cup 91 Finals, there was one other prize still floating around the group - the UWC Title Belt. The Vilitan National Team have already had two opportunities to claim the belt and failed at both occasions, first in the 5-3 defeat to the Holy Empire on the opening matchday of World Cup 91 Qualifying and then, more recently, at the Jlinal Cove Stadium against the Autonomous Vessel Nation where a victory would have enabled the Jungle Rebels to re-claim the belt but instead they were held to a 1-1 draw and the title would remain with the Aut-Ves-Nat.

Ironically, as a result it would mean that the Rebels vs. Empire matchup at Hothi'iceii would be the lone matchup all cycle where The Holy Empire were not contesting the UWC Title Belt. On that day, Geektopia would defeat Aut-Ves-Nat to takeover the UWC Title for themselves before bringing the belt with them into the dreamed realm and leaving it back with The Holy Empire on Matchday 13. With the Empire having a bye on the final matchday of the group stage there are just three matches left for another nation to claim the UWC title from the totally normal mutants with Garifunya and Aut-Ves-Nat being the most likely challenges for the Empire down the stretch. Chartistan, who many may have felt would have the best chance to pry the UWC Belt out of one of the many arms and hands of the Empire's squad ended up being completely unable to keep pace in a 4-1 defeat on Matchday 15.

After an auspicious start to the World Cup 91 Qualifying campaign with back-to-back defeats, Endur Rotropii's Jungle Rebels had finally earned the respect of the nation and the conversation quickly pivoted from questioning whether the radical clean out of many of the National Team's established veteran stars was really the right approach to the cycle, and instead started focusing on the upward potential of Rotropii's relatively young squad, and what kind of odds they might have of taking the Vilitan National Team back to the World Cup Finals in Græntfjall and Farfadillis.

OOC: Sorry fir the break in my regular RP's, life intervened yesterday and I didn't have time to write up what I usually do. The book will be continued next matchday.

Top 3 Most Important Matches of this Campaign

This has been a qualifying campaign unlike any other. Forget the fact that this is only Saterun's second(or third, depending on how you look at it). It's crazy. Abbas Yousafali came in with low expectations after the IAC. He had been hired on the premise of outperforming Marin Freeberg a cycle earlier, but finished in the IAC with the exact same record: 2-3. The Claws were eliminated in the group stage. Those expectations lowered during the first half of the qualifying campaign. It took a mystical ressurgance and ten games undefeated to push the Claws from 2nd to last to 2nd from the top. An unprecedented rise. It was helped by a rock-solid back wall, and a high-flying attack. Winning was Saterun's new style. Given that, you might be surprised by our first pick...

3. Saterun 2-2 Pemecutan

Saterun hadn't had the greatest of starts, and now they were hosting a very important match against the top team in the group. Although it was only three games in, Pemecutan had won all three and scored 17. They were on fire. But the Claws were determined to stop them. They held the top team in the group to their first draw of the campaign. The game started ordinarily enough. The AAA wasn't as full as it now is, and the Claws didn't have a complete home crowd at their backs. Nonetheless, they scored the opener, a brilliant run from Thiago. He weaved through the Pemecutan defense, and ended with a chip over the goalkeeper. Saterun were leading the current 4th best in the world(or second, if you think of it in terms of World Cup finishes). They had scored inside of 20 minutes. Unfortunately, Pemecutan would strike back. They got the equalizer in the 37th. It wasn't bad, per se, but Saterun had lost a lead several times before. They knew what could happen. And it did. Just before the half, Pemecutan took back control of the match, heading home from a very nice cross. Saterun had an uphill battle. The rest of the game was quiet. In the 90+1", Saterun got a corner. Rahul Marković knew what he had to do. He ran up the entire field, and, as the ball went right to his head, attempted to header. It didn't exactly work. He only got a partial to it, and the ball skewed off in a different direction. In the greatest stroke of luck so far, it landed on the feet of Becker, who smacked it in. Saterun had equalized.

2. HUElavia 1-2 Saterun

Saterun had enjoyed a rebirth. They had started to actually win, but this was another big test. Saterun had lost the home fixture by a narrow goal, and didn't want this game to end the same. They walked onto the field with purpose. This time would be different. It didn't seem that way for the first half. Saterun narrowly escaped a few HUElavian shots(mostly because of Marković heroics), and couldn't get an attack together. Eventually, in the home team scored. They got a 28th minute shot on that Rahul couldn't save. It seemed like it would be a repeat. Yousafali had quite the team talk to deliver. And deliver he did. The Claws came back out with renewed energy, and started to attack more. Thiago was brought down in the penalty area. It was a simple matter to put it in the back of the net. All was even. In the 90th, Glenn Lundquist stood over the corner flag. In the last minute of regular time, Saterun had won a corner. After Thiago's equalizer in the 78", the Claws had been high-tempo. They continually attacked, and this was their chance to win the game. Only a minute would be added on. Glenn brought his foot back. He swung a beautiful in-swinger right to Thiago. But...the kick hadn't been perfect. It was a little high over Thiago's head, and slightly behind him. So Thiago did the only thing he could. He turned around, jumped up, and slammed a bicycle kick into the top right corner. Saterun had taken the lead. Thiago ran over the away section and threw off his shirt, the crowd going wild. A minute later, the whistle blew. Saterun had just beaten the reigning Independent champion.

1. Saterun 3-1 Chromatika

Last time these two teams played, Saterun was demolished by the Anomalies in their own back yard. Now, the return fixture was coming to the AAA. If anything was going to break Saterun's winning streak, it would be this game. Or not. Saterun's offense went wild, with goals from Mitzinho coming in the 4th and 10th, and Thiago got one in the 14th. Within 15 minutes, they were three goals up. The home crowd loved it. Thiago had, in typical Thiago fashion, made his goal one for the highlights. Traditionally, he didn't take free-kicks, but this was his night. He stepped up only 20 yards away. Not too far. But he made up for that with a curling strike that had Enax astonished. Pure class. Chromatika managed to get one back in the 29th, but the Claws weren't going to give this one up. They put the game on lockdown for the remainder of the match. Nobody could get past their defense. Yousafali said this after the match: "This game really embodied the revival that we have had. To lose the first leg 3-0 and then do this? It's unthinkable. And yet, we didn't just think it. We did it." This capped off ten games without a loss, nine of which were wins. The Pot 8 team, with a world ranking of 130, had just shocked Chromatika. But they weren't out yet. Abbas Yousafali could have a historic campaign, but a lot will come down to matchday 20, the climatic battle against Cabo Azure. Kimi-Suomi will also be a tough fixture, but the Claws can certainly do it.

Renegade, act III, pt 2
The neighborhood of Villa Silva sprawls north from downtown Sao Simone into the gently rolling hills that make up the countryside of the island of Aho. By the time you’ve crested the first set of hills, it’s clear you’ve left the dingy, crowded, working-class seaport and entered into the domain of Cabo Azures upper-crust: no have-nots need apply. Well-paved streets wend their way past wrought-iron gates with the family names overhead; gardens and lawns are tended by staff. You could almost think you’re in a nice neighborhood of Corvistone or Concord Heights.

Adjacent to Villa Silva, wedged between the big houses and the sea, is the small neighborhood known as Praia de Silva. Separated from the larger, more tourist-friendly beaches by Sao Simone’s sprawling industrial seaport, Praia de Silva is the home of exclusive beachfront restaurants, bungalows, and shops where the Villa Silva’s elites go to be seen browsing. It is also the location of the Silva Marina, home to the Silva family’s personal fleet and the nicest yachts to be found anywhere in Cabo Azure. Manuel’s own flagship, the Bejia Flor II, had been in drydock since before his coronation following decades of neglect, and would not be re-launched for at least another year. When that day came, she would have her own slip at the Sao Simone City Marina, but for now he was happy to tie up in Praia de Silva.

Once they were in range, the frogman standing watched radioed his comrades on shore to look alive while his comrade expertly brought the little boat alongside the wharf. Two frogmen in plain clothes met them, looking as conspicuous in their rip-stop pants, polos, and ballistic sunglasses as if they’d worn their full coast guard mess ensemble. Manuel didn’t mind; this was Praia de Silva, after all, and his profile wasn’t that much higher than the owners of the yachts that towered on either side of him. The two plainclothes flanked him as he made his way down the wharf toward a black SUV parked along the curb at the entrance to the marina; one got in the passenger seat, while the other opened the rear passenger door for Manuel.

The driver was silent as they pulled away, and the two frogmen spent their time texting on their government-issued cell phones, likely updating their compatriots as to locations. Both wore earpieces that would allow for more expedient communication, but the threat was low and Manuel found the constant muttering back and forth tiresome. For his part, Manuel looked out the car window at Praia de Silva as it went by, remembering his days as a taxi driver, until the SUV pitched backwards as it ascended the hill toward Villa Silva.

Villa Silva is the name of the neighborhood and the football team that represents the neighborhood, but it is also the name of the Silva family estate. Where the other Azurean noble families divested their family holdings and integrated into the middle class, the Silvas maintained their status through the twentieth century through shrewd real estate deals and networking and are still considered Cabo Azure’s second family. Villa Silva sits where it always has, at the top of a hill overlooking Sao Simone, though today the winding path leading up the hill has a name; Silva Avenue, the most exclusive address in all of Cabo Azure.

At the end of Silva Avenue, a wrought iron gate pulled apart to allow the SUV entrance to the grounds. The main house at Villa Silva dates to the eighteenth century and while secondary buildings have been added over the years, the original house maintains its antique charm. On the veranda, a frail-looking man in his nineties leaned on the railing and squinted through wide-rimmed glasses to see the SUV approach and Manuel disembark, flanked by his frog men. As they climbed the steps, the man inclined his head in a stiff attempt at a neck bow.

“Your Majesty,” said Dom Carlos Silva, patriarch of the family. “Nephew, it is so good to see you.”

Luke Elliott: "Everybody knows I've mellowed a bit in recent years"
Chief Football Correspondent Jamie Rodgers does the rounds with Liam West's long-time colleague about football and life... almost
Originally published on Saturday 29th January 2000

Over the past year, I've met seventeen of Saint Eleanor's twenty-three players as they talk about how they've gone from humble origins to one of the fastest-developing national teams in the multiverse. Their parents have - let's just say - worked all kinds of jobs in all kinds of places; two of them have even died in the line of fire. But Luke Elliott's father might have gotten the biggest scoop of them all. "I mean, he's been friends with George since he was driving those tiny lorries all around Oaktree and he's good with words, so why wouldn't he?"

Graham Elliott regularly writes speeches for President and General George Mitcham, but his son insists that "it's good but a bit drudgey and involves a lot of trying to look things up and get things right. My mum's a secretary, she knows this stuff too! Actually, I was born in Oaktree, the President was operating there at the time, Dad was there by coincidence and we moved to Central after we won the war. I'd like to add that I wasn't really too bad at this whole football thing, either; the big man said so much when I visited the Presidential Palace a few times during primary." It definitely appeared to pay off, as he was called up to the Eleanorian Academy's victorious Charles Trump Shield side of 1985. "Better than School Council! Sorry... Big Danny Patrick agreed with Mitcham, said I was really good, got called up and my parents agreed why not, it'll be a good use of my summer."

More than that: Elliott started every minute of every game as they conceded only twice in six ties - both times in a dramatic quarterfinal against University College - and ended up earning that year's Golden Backpack, awarded to the Charles Trump Shield's best player. In 1998, the Army School's Denise Livingston became the first and only centreback since Elliott to win the Backpack. "She's a good player, with the Army and their team now, and I hope she does a lot over there. Both of us kept an awful lot of clean sheets, both of us were successful team captains, we both had similar go-get-'em attitudes - at the time, anyway - and we both had excellent working relationships with our players, or so I heard in Denise's case. For me, I was on great terms with John Bailey, the team's keeper, and Vanessa Ward, who was the other member of the centreback pairing that year; Vanessa in particular was a great friend of mine off the pitch, too. We sometimes met at the school cafe, talked about what those teams could have thrown at us - we weren't scouts or anything! - discussed potential strategies knowing that nobody horrible would listen, talked about other things too; but we went out there, and I helped explain to my team what needed to be done, we did it, won the final 3-0, get praised by opposition players and managers, and that's how you grab your Backpack."

What three games does he feel most shaped him as a footballer? His first choice - much like long-time arch-nemesis Katie O'Donnell - is the 2-0 away defeat to Athletic Saint Eleanor towards the end of the 1989 season. "It was my third season, Liam West's fourth, Katie's first, and she was starting regularly but they expected more of Vic[tor] South - he'd been doing the rounds since 1978 or something like that - than they did her. We still do man-marking in Saint Eleanor, mostly, and Vic was Liam West's responsibility so I got Katie for a bit. I definitely got experience, but not of the particularly good kind, not even when you're considering this was the beta version of the best striker we've ever made! I made a huge mistake early in the game because I wasn't paying attention to Vic, I thought he was going to set up a through ball but he just passed it to Katie on the side instead and she began the count. Thankfully I got hold of my intuition after almost letting him in for the 2-0 goal a couple of times, looked at his body language, figured 'this can't be right, he's almost feigning - but not really,' got right in his face on occasions, fouled him so often I got a yellow card for my troubles - goodness, I thought we'd stopped him. We almost got something out of the game but it wasn't to be because we got chucked into the wall for the free kick that happened next and I quite honestly had no idea what that interplay was about in the seconds before Katie secured the advantage - but it had nothing to do with Vic so I didn't really do anything. Gaff [Phil Farlane] approached me after the game and said 'why not?' I had no answer but he honestly had a good point: don't assume that what you've been asked to do is everything you have to do."

Up at number two is the goalless draw at home to Army and Navy in 1993. "I mean, I didn't care, either - I'm no relation to Roger! Westy was the new captain, [Derek] Pittam's the new manager, this is one of those time periods everybody remembers and - although we'd had a bit of a torrid year thus far - the Army and Navy game was the first chance we had to make a big impression against another traditionally backs-to-the-wall side. And hardly anybody was talking about it; the only really good matchup here was me and Westy versus Aidan Harris and Noah Chorley, one of them in their prime, the other developing but still looking good, both big threats we had to stop. Despite what you may be thinking, this was absolutely not as dirty as some of the other ties, mostly because we were afraid about artificially hobbling ourselves for a bit, and, well, I think that was one of the matches where my new approach to play was showing, not Layla Grover levels of ridiculous - you know what I mean - but being calm, keeping calm, forcing errors rather than making them ourselves, being adventurous with our position sometimes, blocking shots, a couple of good standing tackles, and no sliding! Not even the unintentional sort: it was nice, sunny and nothing to worry about. I looked after Aidan that time and he was big - injury-prone, as we learned a few weeks later, but big regardless - and he made absolutely no apology for it. I got my head down, knew he was going to be a threat, did everything within my power to stop him, got away without a booking or a goal conceded, method successful, operation successful, we'd win three titles in a row with this leadership later, praise be."

Finally, he goes for the 1-0 win against Grand Beach towards the end of the 1996 season. "1996 had possibly the weakest of the three-in-a-row title-winning Independence teams. We were a bit sorry in defence that year, more so than previous years, but then that was the last truly unpredictable year in Eleanorian history. At that point in the season, they were top of the table and I think we had the worst defence in the entire league!" (They didn't - but only by a single goal conceded.) "That kind of game, more than almost any other you could think of, required commitment, dedication, action planning, and realising how we could harness our strengths to good effect - I did the same thing I did with Vanessa all those years ago, gabbed on to Liam West about how this could work, he worked with Derek a bit and we all had clear expectations for that game. My task was to stop Patrick Budd, really; he was, and is, one of the best and most experienced strikers in the Saint Eleanor League, something like a much better George Guest, and not everybody realised that at the time even though he loved going out guns blazing, full steam ahead and all that. And yes, everybody knows I've mellowed a bit in recent years, but this was more me being confident and assured in my role, knowing what I had to do, making big decisions, working out what he was doing and then stopping him too many times to count - I think he only clocked a single shot on target and it wasn't really that good, John can tell you more if he remembers. Safe to say that was one of my bigger games of recent times, it led us onto a much better defensive record and the big trophy, of course. And I reckon I played more than my fair part on the stage!"

Unlike at Indy, Elliott has never been a national team regular, with Paul Ferry and then Sam Newbridge filling in the other central defence slot instead. "Paul Ferry was an infinitely better player than he was a person. Sam's an infinitely better person than he is a player! I'll grant you he's gotten a bit quieter, Paul's been forced out of the game in the meanwhile, and I'd be much more confident in what Sammy can do. He's delivered, of course, and I 100% hope to see more coming out from him." Looking away from the defensive core, where his camaraderie with West and Bailey is already well-documented, he puts in praise for "Steve Pilchard, good on the ball but needs a bit of work, a nightmare for two days of the year but absolutely brilliant the rest of the time and - much as Westy will hate me saying this - hopefully he really improves his play in the coming years!" He also makes an unexpected case for Melcheta Pazorzal, "a man who's always decent to play against and who you can never predict because sometimes he'll go straight ahead, sometimes he'll carry on, and - although I completely get his reputation otherwise - he will, on occasions, even be kind enough to give the ball back. I've had more than a few coffees with him, we agree on a lot of big social issues, and yeah, good bloke." And who offers tactical advice to Liam West there? "The manager, of course. I like Priscilla; she says what's necessary when it's necessary. And we aren't worrying a bit because of it."

Despite having the opportunity to keep the gap between themselves and group leaders Kandorith at four points, Kaya Michiyu's outfit sealed an exciting 5-3 win against Armbruster last week as the White Stars stumbled to an uneventful, goalless draw against Krytenia in Avidia. "Everybody knows BXE [Brelk-Xeral Erv] off of Qusmo; a few of their players are household names, and I'd definitely argue [Alexander] Devereux and [Cande] Montalban have become names bandied about my household a lot - I love my wife, I swear - but they've been the driving force behind the Krytenian revival and I am quite honestly surprised we've gotten four points off the Dragons. Everybody's been counting us out on multiple occasions, but they've only been paying attention to us now. I've been insistent that we don't let all of this get to our heads, we relax, do what we have to do over the next four, don't panic, work hard and hope for the very best. Don't we?"

Luke Elliott is more dovish than most centrebacks, even by Eleanorian standards - but perhaps too dovish. Many, almost too many (this reporter included), have started to believe that he has been pushing too far up the pitch and trying to be too creative for a defender with his expectations; while that may be true on many occasions, it would be inaccurate to fault him for never taking heed of his defensive duties, especially not during the biggest games where there are clear expectations about what to do and how. Surely somebody will step up and make similar requests of Saint Eleanor's current back four in the coming weeks.

Director Marz Rekaldi’s Boldheart is the latest instalment, and a ‘reboot’ of, the long-running Boldheart film series. The series, which purports to be based on the real life of King Berlasko the Bold of Gesterlake, has never been known for its academic rigour or historical accuracy; this instalment is no exception.

The film’s faults to historical accuracy are beyond numerous; as is typical for the series, producers have boiled the real history down to its basic elements and slapped mass-market, fantastical elements on top with next to no regard for its real-life setting. Boldheart credits ‘Dr. Anakoz Inchaurraga’ of the University of Bakartirla as its ‘historical consultant’; I have been unable to find any information on Dr. Inchaurraga or his institution, which does not exist.

Characters’ attire is frequently unrecognisable, pieced together from different centuries (and in one shot, an actor’s modern wristwatch is clearly visible). Historical events have been simplified, removed, rearranged, recast, or entirely invented. Spoken dialogue does not match attested contemporary text or speeches. Military weapons and tactics are fanciful when not fantastical, and more similar to those of the 1st century B.A. (Late Resurgence) than the film’s 6th century B.A. setting. More generally, the film freely indulges in ‘barbarian’ stereotypes of the Early Resurgence, exaggerates traditional gender roles, and mischaracterises minority religions.

As an epic action movie, however, it is moderately entertaining. The performance of former footballer Aire Epherra is particularly inspired as the rabid, permanently furious Berlasko (also an inaccurate though popular depiction). At time of writing, Boldheart is likely to surpass The Eight Names of Laughter as the top-grossing release of the year in Astograth.

In lieu of continuing to list the film’s faults, I would instead like to focus on its route to the silver screen. An Astograthian-Farfish co-production, nearly all of principal photography for Boldheart took place on soundstages in Ruland. This has been much reported on in Astograthian media as a trailblazing initiative, and the movie’s director-producer Marz Rekaldi has encouraged other productions to move to what he calls ‘Rulandywood’.

There are many advantages to shooting in Ruland, mostly to do with the low cost of living and absence of labour protection laws. I believe these characteristics also make Rulandywood an exceedingly fertile terrain for experimental archaeology, and although I will be further developing this point in an article for this journal (Urdapiyeta, in press), it is worthwhile to briefly explain what I mean. Experimental archaeology is the process of testing historical and archaeological hypotheses through experimental methods (Tamborindegiz, 677), analogous to ‘historical re-enactments’ which are undertaken for non-academic purposes. Films such as Boldheart involve large-scale historical re-enactment, as in the movie’s climactic set-piece: the Battle of Okerruri. Reportedly, some 50,000 Rulandese extras took part in recreating Okerruri – a number very close to modern estimates of the size of the battle. The film’s version is fantastical to the point of not resembling the real battle at all; Asier’s army did not include Zentrian wizards, flamethrowers, or polar bears. Berlasko’s horse did not grow wings of fire; he did not personally slay a third of the enemy army. This is a shame, because if academics had the resources to stage a re-enactment in Ruland, it would solve one of the greatest problems with doing military-focused experimental archaeology: re-enactors are normally not allowed to kill each other. The Rulandese, if carefully selected, do not have such restrictions.

As stated before, I will elaborate in more depth in a forthcoming article. My proposal, however, is this: academics, particularly those of military history, must involve ourselves more closely with the film industry, and persuade them that audiences are hungry for historical accuracy. We work closely with producers, director, choreographers, production and costume designers, and so on, to ensure a re-creation of our chosen period (say, the Early Resurgence) as accurate as possible. Weapons and armour, in particular, should be period-accurate and not blunted or made less-lethal in any way. Then, battle scenes must unfold according to the academic’s instructions in order to test the research hypothesis. In order to ensure appropriate animosity between the Rulandese soldiers, my initial recommendation would be to separate participants according to football club affiliation. Once underway, the clash would allow us to understand, with greater accuracy than ever, questions such as what a push-of-pike actually looked like, or how cavalry charges worked exactly (including if horses will, in fact, charge a spear wall), or whether wedge formations served any purpose. Filmmakers, meanwhile, will be rewarded with footage (image AND sound) that is not only what audiences want, but intensely realistic of true historical battles.

The potential for academic research in Rulandywood has been opened up by Boldheart, and for that it must be commended.

Part 9 – Crunch Time

Palacio del Altiplano, Huayramarca D.M. September 18th, 1985

“Crunch” time is a phrase commonly used in parliamentarian jargon in Huayramarca, meaning that things are about to get solved out when it comes to the complex network of negotiations, something that has to occur in order to approve some laws or acts that require multi-partisan efforts and will definitely be helpful for Huayramarca. Marta just finished the initial debate as a motion for further discussion and negotiation was requested to the Speaker of the National Assembly, hence, the team of MPs and Marta had to be aware of any kind of movement or request of communication in order to reach a common ground for the parties and their interests on behalf of the people.

As the break ended and the parties managed to meet in order to solve some differences and internal interests to suggest some modifications to the bill, Marta said to Víctor “Anything of interest for us as of now?” Víctor checked his phone and noted that there were a couple of messages, mostly on a tone saying “We are currently analysing” and another one from the Conservative Party saying “Let’s meet in an hour, there are things to solve.” Then he told Marta “Conservatives want to talk with us in an hour, so let’s schedule that, it’ll be a vital meeting.” Marta nodded and then notified the MPs through their group chat, most of them answered “Agree” or “OK” Then she told Víctor “Ok, we are ready, they have it scheduled” Then, some Ñucanchi Ñan MPs said that there were in meetings with the Popular Party, as they were concerned about lack of equity to the coastal departments, something that intrigued Marta a lot due to the importance of said places when it comes to Huayramarcan Politics, she asked them if she was able to take part, to what they accepted.

Marta rushed through the halls of the Palacio del Altiplano, from one side to the other un order to meet with the Popular Party MPs and solve their questions or doubts. As she arrived, one of the MPs asked “What about us?” Marta said “This will be a special programme; the coastal departments will continue to have their usual projects and support from the Government. In other words, this is extra help for the departments in need to attract investment and development, most of them are in the Sierra as of now.” The MP asked once again “We will have access to Free Trade Agreements and their benefits?” Marta replied “Of course, FTAs are always negotiated country-wide, not department-wide. That’s why anybody across Huayramarca will have the same opportunity to export products with benefits to other nations, as an example: cocoa from Cocoamarca will be beneficiated from this initiative.”

Acting like a trigger, the sole fact of mentioning exportation of Cocoamarcan cocoa caught the attention of the whole Popular Party bench, as most of the coastal departments often tend to export food products such as coconuts, maize, rice, etc. and even some technological components for electric panels. The Secretary General of the PP got triggered indeed and that led him to ask “Will receive the same treatment our exports than the Cocoamarcan ones?” Marta then said “Depending of the needs from the signatory nations. From our end, we guarantee that your products will be considered as important as any other produced in Huayramarcan soil, it’s up to the signatory nations and the negotiations made with them the determining factors to let that happen.” He replied “That’s good to hear, we will provide our support to your proposal without any kind of observations.” Marta stretched hands with the MP and the deal was done already.

Marta then came back to her office; it was time to do some arithmetic about the number of votes pending to obtain and get past the 100-vote mark… She was 19 votes shy of the mark, still, she wanted the support from the Conservative Party in order to send a strong message of consensus and unity to the people, to show that divisions can be bridged if the opinions of everybody are taken into consideration and, if possible, be utilised to build a strong bill. Juanito called her and said “Hey, what’s going on?” She said “We are about to secure the support of 100 MPs, so there’s a real chance that we will provide help to the Sierra and take this country out of the current situation it’s facing.” Juanito was happy by listening that kind of news, all of the exhaustion that her mother had endured through the last couple of months could, finally, have some fruition.

Juanito continued by asking “What about Conservatives?” Are they providing us some kind of help or support towards this proposal?” Marta said “They will have a meeting with us in a couple of minutes, apparently they have some observations and we need to assess those in order to let this bill go through. Communists will provide help in principle, but I want to make sure that even Conservatives join to this effort, the message of unity across parties is important to me and I want to reflect that towards the Huayramarcan people for confidence’s sake.” Juanito then said “Go for it, Mami!” They hung the call and then Marta proceeded to go to the meeting with the Conservative Party, a one that was already expected to be large and difficult, since there would be some points that could even be hostile when boarding those up in the meeting. She prayed and then reached the hall, the MPs were drinking some water and then sat patiently in a set of tables, each one with a microphone in order to facilitate communication among parties.

Marta arrived and said “Good afternoon. Please, I want to encourage everybody to take this conversation in a civil way, we are here to negotiate and make sure that Huayramarca will have the best from everyone here, we want to make this proposal robust enough so people can feel empowered and confident that we will work for real, for their benefit in a sincere way.” Then, Ricardo Flores said “I share the values you’re suggesting, just hope nobody from your bench goes across the line.” The Ñucanchi Ñan MPs remained silent and ignored the wording from Flores, it’s well known that he usually tries to cause temper tantrums with wording intendedly.

Flores continued and read a paper “We are extremely interested in allowing oil exploitation, but we want to make sure that the Environmental Impact Assessment won’t be a cause for process nightmares and red tape. Most of the Huayramarcan Jungle have capabilities to process significant amounts of oil, henceforth, satisfying the energy needs of some of our neighbours and our own needs. This will help many families in this nation to get highly-paid employments, let Sechura and the rest of the Jungle to develop properly and also provide prosperity to Huayramarca overall.” Marta then took a sheet of paper from her notes, she tried to find the note for Environmental issues, took some time to do so but was able to not exasperate the Conservative MPs.

Marta then said “Ok, assessments will include technical aspects of the machinery that will be used to produce oil, be it offshore or inshore such as the case of Sechura. We want to make sure that the processes optimise their works in order to minimise any kind of potential losses, also, their level of noises and vibration to avoid people disturbance and also any kind of potential fracking against the soil.” Flores replied “Fracking? Then, how are we supposed to extract it?” Marta said “Conventional methods or use steam techniques. After all, we need an analysis as there’s still no real certainty about the size of our reserves, not even an estimate about those and the extraction conditions, we need to be sure about what we would need and how the environment could be protected.” Flores said “I stand corrected.”

Oil concerns are an important matter, of course, since it could be a way to let Huayramarca thrive and then take net gains to spend in other business to achieve diversification, something that Marta had already clear by the opinions that some economists had provided her through time; still, there wasn’t enough evidence to certify that Huayramarca could even have oil underneath the jungle or sea. Martha continued the conversation with the Conservatives, she was responding positively to every question, a good and fashionable way to convince them was being discovered through the guidance of those debate lovers and Peitho, still, there was a last hurdle to overcome and that was a random question from a Conservative MP. “Have you considered any specific criteria to the equalisation funds?” Marta doubted a bit, she had to take some seconds in order to answer, but another Ñucanchi Ñan MP got her back by saying “We have, in fact, several criteria to the equalisation fundings such as: production outcome, human development index, poverty indexes and more.” Marta handed the MP a sheet with information of the metrics that could be used, the Conservative MPs passed it one by one in order to analyse it.

They looked convinced, most of them, including some hardliners such as Flores and Mamani-Hastings. Having the approval of the latter was significant, as his extensive knowledge of macroeconomics backed him in this kind of situations. “Looks well-thought, considers most factors from a productive and human point of view.” The Secretary General then said “Ok, it’s a go for us” He shook hands with Marta and sealed the deal. A big smile was in the face of Víctor and Marta, satisfied that they finally managed to achieve the bill. As negotiations finished, it was time to go to vote, the MPs sat one by one and started to press the buttons to approve or disapprove the bill, depending of the Party Whip, in request of the Speaker. “We have results for the proposal debated, there are 130 votes for and 70 against. We have a law approved.” Claps erupted from the Ñucanchi Ñan, Conservative, and Popular parties as the bill was finally approved, Marta’s plan came to fruition and she had to deliver a speech.

Marta was walking and then Túpac Amaru appeared suddenly “You’re walking on the right path, our path. Don’t dare to deviate from it, the people will be pleased if you manage to improve their lifestyle, their lives, etc. We need to achieve dignity and prosperity, with that, our eternal struggle will come to fruition and we will finally be satisfied, as our duty to help the Pachamama and her sons will be finalised! Make us proud, make Huayramarca strong and dignified.”

Marta reached the podium; people was already expecting her to talk as she took some time with Túpac, she then said “I’m proud that 65% of us here has chosen a path, our path, to make a more liveable Huayramarca for us, our sons and descendance! It’s important to remember the eternal and valuable words of Túpac Amaru, our guide, who said “Dignity is important for the peoples of our Anaia, through consensus and interest in satisfying the needs of those who have fallen in bad times, we shall thrive, we shall bolster our possibilities to succeed. Let’s make our forefathers proud! Let every Huayramarcan have better opportunities than before, in equality and without need to traverse hundreds of kilometers, let progress visit every town, every household in the nation! Every person has the right to fight for their dreams, to achieve it and we, as government, are responsible to provide them the right tools to achieve a betterment for everybody. Our plan will provide that much expected help, in order to make Huayramarca thrive with dignity. Let us now cheer for the beginning of a new era, a era of progress and development, may the Multiverse know that the Huayramarcan Condor will now soar with dignity and pride!”

previously.
Everyone was now gathered inside the debriefing room, adjacent to the QZ testing room where they first explored the other-worldly technology brought about by the Kelloturreko. Alvarez closed the door behind him, ensuring the room's acoustic shielding was now in full effect. No one could listen in, and the five couldn't hear anything from the outside.

"This is a simple, yet very important mission," Alvarez told his Recruits. "I know a lot of this has been a whirlwind, but I can promise you that success in this task will mean success as a Ranger. Do you all understand me?"

The four nodded in agreement.

"You all will be ensuring that this country remains safe and our newly found democratic traditions are upheld to the highest degree," he said. "I know you've heard the stories from your parents and older friends—this country used to be rough to live in. And it's awful knowing the atrocities we've committed in this nation."

René took every word Alvarez said in absolute sincerity. This was his chance to finally be part of something bigger than himself and define him in such a way that would make him stand out just a bit from his father and grandfather. From the start, he viewed the Ranger program as a family tradition that needed to be followed (for fears of the ostracization that would entail) but at least he could forge his own legacy there. Working on a project like QZ—which would help with national security—would be the differentiator in his family. For all he knew, his predecessors didn't do the things he was doing. And he would always have that on them.

"You do this mission right, and your time as a Ranger will be one of great growth and development," Alvarez continued on. "There's a reason why this country's so anxious about falling back into tyranny. You're going to help stop that."

Margarida was cautious with what's transpired. She was introduced to a whole new set of technology and given reasons for the implementations of it that did not sit well with her. Gortolekua was home and what she loved, above all else, but she knew when to question her faith in the nation for the greater good. When it came to the greater good, that would be what mattered first. Project QZ wasn't to that point yet for her, but the red flags were starting to line-up. It was on her mind, to say the least. But who knows? She knew she's been wrong before, so this wouldn't be the first time her gut was wrong. It's natural to be wrong.

"You'll be planting a device inside the headquarters of some domestic agitators that will allow us to surveil and assess their threat levels at any given moment," the trainer said. "It sounds challenging, but it's nothing too serious. Put this under a lamp, press the button, and everything will come to fruition."

Catharina was ready to play her part. At first, she felt the whole initial part of training, before they announced who was getting to go where. But as soon as she saw the advancements happening in front of her, this was it. She loved removing the fiction from science fiction. The fact her country was looking to do this? Remarkable in its own way too. The hope of being able to talk about this publicly and further develop this groundbreaking technology motivated her to continue on and be part of a scientific revolution. Nothing could take away that she would be making history with what was being developed. The world would be better off because of her.

"You'll be serving your country well by doing this. I'm not going to tell you to not let us down because I know you won't," Alvarez added. "You're all Rangers for a reason. You know what it means to be here."

Cash didn't give a flying fuck. He just wanted to be done with this—get in, get out, do his job and get back to what he was doing, albeit more covertly so he doesn't meet the feds again.

"Here's a picture of where you need to go. The office looks nice because Plant this device under his lamp and make sure the button is pushed when you set the lamp down. Exit through the back, which you can find by following the red exit signs with an arrow pointing left—not the green signs pointing right. You'll meet Roxeldo, one of our covert Rangers, in the locale's vicinity, where he'll have a picture that will bring you back to here. Any questions? It's a straightforward mission, but please let me know if not enough of the bases were covered."

Nobody asked a question.

"Excellent," he said. "Get in these jumpsuits to blend in with those who may be around. This is important: You're mere workers right now, not Rangers or Recruits or anything right now. This is tantamount to our country's safety."

They all changed quickly, tossing the jumpsuits over their all-white uniforms, making sure not a peep of off-white showed. Alvarez held the photo of their destination up, ready for them to run into.

"Your country is looking after you, and you are looking after it," Alvarez said. "May your success be swift, Recruits."

One by one, the four started sprinting into the picture, blue auras developing as the came into contact and disappeared. This was the beginning of Rangerhood for them. And what a way to start by preventing domestic terrorism.

The biggest group remaining was made of Nicole Warren, Cam Cross, Sarah Arrowsword, and the Cenians Andrew Arrowsword and Liam Penderyn. With the departure of the Drawk Corps girls and Jaxon, the mood had been significantly dampened. To be fair, spirits aren't going to be high in a deadly maze, but the five still moved in relative silence. The unlit cavern winded for hours, with a few forks and dead ends to contend with. Even with their doubts and anxieties setting in, they still moved as a cohesive unit.

Then the party came across something new. The cave tunnel they were traversing suddenly opened up into a massive cavern, a narrow underground ravine that stretched far out of view in height and length. The tunnel the group was in ended about 20 feet above the floor of the ravine, where a small stream of what looked like magma slowly tumbled out of sight and provided a low eerie light for the cavern.

"Woah," somebody said, and for a moment, the group all looked in awe. The ravine was also filled with stalactites and stalagmites, and there was the unmistakable sound of a waterfall somewhere out of sight. It was honestly beautiful, if you didn't consider the context of the surroundings.

"Now what?" Sarah asked once the gawking was over. "This path ends. There's gotta be another path in here."

"This could be our real darkness challenge," Nicole mused. "I'm sure this cavern is filled with a dozen different paths, and I'm sure the best one to take is the one that's most difficult to find."

"Let's go down to the floor of the cavern," Liam suggested. "It'll be easier to go from there. Hopefully there's paths that don't require scaling a rock wall."

The group all sounded in agreement and, one by one, they scrabbled down the side of the ravine towards the bottom. Cam slipped on the way down, but she only fell 10 feet and insisted she was fine once she got back up and dusted herself off. They all made it down in one piece, and from there they decided on a plan of action.

"Should we split up, perhaps?" Andrew suggested. "I know we're not supposed to, but this seems like too large of a cavern for the maze to block us off from one another. Plus, we can cover more ground and find a good path sooner."

Nicole hesitated, but nodded. "Time is of the essence, I think. The more time we spend here, the higher chance something is going to find us. You guys take that side, and we'll try this side?"

"And mind the lava!" Cam tried to lighten the mood a bit. The five split into three and two, with the Cenian couple heading off to one end.

Andrew and Liam took their lanterns and dutifully examined the rock walls around them, searching for a crevice or cave that would be suitable to enter. Before long, their steps started sounding crunchy.

"Look, the floor surface here is all gravel." Liam kicked a rock into the darkness in demonstration.

"Hey, maybe there's an entrance partially hidden by the gravel," Andrew reasoned. "That seems sneaky enough."

"Good idea!" Liam gave Andrew a meaningful look. "Shine your light over here, let's look closer."

The pair investigated along the gravelly area of the ravine. The gravel wasn't the kind you'd see on a country road, the stones were larger, and weightier. As they continued along the edge of the ravine, they saw that the gravel ascended into a huge pile against a corner of the cavern. It was imposing, but suddenly Andrew noticed something that caught his eye.

"Look, Liam," Andrew extended his arm so the lantern shined brighter against the cave wall. "The light isn't reflecting off the wall here. There's a gap!"

They both looked closer. There was indeed a gap at the bottom of the ravine wall, seemingly half-buried in gravel but clearly extending deeper into the maze.

"You're right," Liam agreed. "Let me take a closer look." The tennis star got on his hands and knees, earning a smirk from Andrew, before poking his head into the gap.

"Hey Sarah!" Andrew called across the cavern. "We found an opening, come check this out!"

Andrew's half-sister heard his call and got the other two Drawkian girls to follow her. They came close enough to see Andrew waving and Liam's behind.

"There's this narrow opening here," Andrew explained. "Liam's trying to see if it's worth going into."

"Just be careful with the gravel," warned Nicole.

"I'm fine!" Liam's voice echoed from the tunnel. "I'm just digging away some of these rocks so we can all fit in."

"Let me help." Andrew came up alongside Liam and crouched down to start scooping more gravel away.

All of a sudden, the gravel started moving. The layer of gravel on the floor next to the cave opening gave way, and swallowed up both Andrew and Liam. The huge pile of gravel on the wall collapsed, sending the small stones tumbling down. Nicole, Cam, and Sarah had to jump out of the way to avoid getting crushed. When the dust settled, the three girls were unhurt, but the cave opening where the Cenians had been was now buried under a ton of gravel.

"No!" Sarah cried when she saw the aftermath. She dashed back to the pile of gravel and started furiously scooping away the rocks in hopes she could get through, but it was no use. There was no chance they could even make a dent in the pile.

"Andrew ..." Sarah breathed weakly. She sat on her knees and started crying, which is something neither Cam nor Nicole had ever seen.

"Oh Sarah," Cam came up to Sarah and gave her a hug from behind to hopefully reassure her. "They might not be dead. Maybe they fell into the cave and they're unscathed. They could be fine, just separated."

"Did you see?" Sarah choked through her tears. "Did you see the metric ... FUCKton of rocks that just fell on them?"

"There's nothing you could've done, Sarah." Nicole came closer. "You couldn't have gotten to them in time. Even if you did, you probably would've been crushed under all this as well."

"I don't think you're helping here," Cam stage whispered to Nicole, still holding Sarah in her arms.

"It's how the maze works." Nicole tried her best to sound sympathetic. "The best we can do is move on and try our best. Maybe they survived, and if they did we'll see them later."

"S-she's right." Sarah sniffed and wiped her nose. "He would want me to keep going."

"There you go." Nicole pointed up to the top of the gravel pile. "The collapsing gravel just revealed another cave opening up there. I think we can make it if we just climb on top of the rock pile."

"It feels wrong to literally climb on top of ... you know." Cam gestured to the spot where Andrew and Liam had just been.

"The maze breeds tragedy and strife," Nicole said as if she was quoting something. "If it gives us an opportunity, we need to take it. It thrives on emotion, and if we run away here then it'll almost certainly lead us to our doom."

"Fine." Cam replied curtly, but she held her tongue. Together, the girls helped Sarah to her feet, made sure all their belongings were in order, and clambered atop the pile of gravel to slip into the newly revealed cave tunnel.

Katie Madison had run for what felt like hours before she finally stumbled to a stop. She crouched over, hands on her knees, and retched. Katie hadn't felt this gassed since the end of the World Cup 79 group stage when Drawkland came tantalizingly close to reaching their first playoff appearance before letting it slip away. Her mind had been racing, panic filled her as she hyperventilated. The light in the distance, despite her best efforts, seemed just as far away as it had when she started running.

After a few minutes to collect herself, Katie looked around and realized something was wrong. Allison Summers was nowhere to be seen. Katie knew that Allison was right beside her when they started jogging, then running, then sprinting, hoping to get to the end of the seemingly infinite tunnel. Now, though, she was gone. Katie didn't see a light or hear any noises besides her own steadying breaths.

"Allison?" Katie puffed. She cleared her throat, caught her breath, and tried again. "Allison?!"

It was no use. Her friend really was gone. Instantly, Katie was overcome with emotion. Fear, regret, loneliness, even anger. She stared down the tunnel, back at the path she'd been running. It was hopelessly, almost mockingly barren. She started to feel tears coming on, and tried her best to hold them.

Still, Katie couldn't help but stumble backwards in pure grief. She took a half dozen blind steps backward, then thump!

She had just run into something tough, something that wasn't there before. She carefully extended a hand behind her and felt a rock wall.

Katie whipped around, and saw a rock wall. The greenish torch she'd been running towards with literal tunnel vision was right in front of her face.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" All of her emotions were instantly replaced with outrage. "This whole time I just needed to walk backwards?!"

Jaxon Madison had been wandering through the catacombs of the maze for awhile. Originally he was muttering to himself about how terribly he had handled the maze so far. Obviously, having done this ordeal before, he wasn't worrying about perishing, but he had come because he felt it was his duty to protect this group of people.

When Nicole had started dating Mike Rodney of the Elite Eleven, Jaxon knew it wouldn't be able to last. Of course, Nicole and her friends were aware of their immortality, so they didn't have to hide that secret anymore, but the fact of the matter is that Nicole would age and die and Mike would not. A relationship like that was not sustainable, Jaxon knew that firsthand.

Jaxon had given Nicole an ultimatum, essentially telling her to break up with Mike to save her heartbreak, or come to terms with the fact that she'd be at the business end of the immortal's curse. He did that because he cared for both Nicole and Mike, and he knew for a fact Mike was too much of a coward to make this statement himself. Unfortunately, Nicole took the secret door number three, the one that meant she would attempt to become immortal to be with her lover forever.

Of course, that puts her blood on Jaxon's hands if she didn't make it out alive. Not only that, but her Quest had brought the attention of many others who wanted to tag along. He had already overseen the death of almost two dozen men in this maze that he couldn't help in time. He knew that if any more died in this maze, when he had the opportunity to help, it would overwhelm him with guilt again. It had taken centuries to get over the deaths of his brothers, his teammates, and now he was about to open those same wounds again.

He knew that not everybody in this party would make it out of the maze alive, but if he could help at least one person survive when they would've otherwise perished, it would be worth it. Maybe. Hopefully.

This is why the Katie incident was weighing so heavily on his mind. Maybe Cam was right when she begged him to stay with the main group. Katie immediately spurned his advice and fractured that group. The rock wall had slammed in his face to separate them again. Maybe the maze had done it on purpose. Was he so arrogant to think he could outsmart the maze and drag people who couldn't possibly get through the maze to victory?

So far Jaxon had gotten the Grid Corps guys separated from the main group thanks to not being patient enough to wait for them, and failed to keep the Drawk Corps girls with the main group as well. He shuddered to think what had become of that remaining group of five without his guidance. They at least had Nicole, who was the most booksmart about the maze, but she still didn't know exactly what she was getting into. Plus, he knew how much disdain she felt for the rest of the group in the maze. Throughout the entire trip through TiSoFaH Jaxon could feel Nicole's wishes that she could just be with her friends, and hopes that the others would turn back for home and leave her alone. Is that the kind of person who could lead a group through these horrors?

Jaxon snapped back to the present when he heard a noise come from behind him. He carefully moved his hand to the hilt of his sword, scabbard slung around his waist. He'd had to dispatch a few creatures, spirits, and assailants in his first time through the maze. Hopefully his sparring sessions with the others in the Elite before this trip had knocked enough rust off.

The noise came again, and suddenly Jaxon heard a shriek, followed by an impact on the ground behind him. He whipped around, brandishing his sword, before realizing what - or rather, who - had just appeared.

"Allison!" Jaxon said, replacing his sword in the scabbard. The Drawk Corps midfielder was laying on the ground at his feet, having clearly just fallen.

"Who...?" Allison whispered, out of breath. "Oh, Jaxon! I'm so glad to see you!"

"What happened to you?" Jaxon leaned down to help Allison to her feet.

"Well, once you disappeared, Katie and I started running to the end of the corridor, but I tripped on a rock or something and hit the ground hard. I think I might've passed out, I dunno. Next thing I knew Katie was gone and I wandered through this caves by myself. I couldn't find my glowsticks and I could barely tell where I was going. I don't even know how long I've been wandering around, but the floor suddenly opened up and I fell right here."

"At least you're okay." Jaxon gave her a sympathetic pat on the shoulder. "Are you injured?"

"Might be a little bruised, but nothing bad I think." Allison put on a weak smile. "I should be fine. Especially cuz I have you to follow around."

"My track record this time is not very good so far," Jaxon chuckled a bit. "But let's hope our fortunes turn."

Leo Cross had been walking for what felt like days. A couple times he felt vaguely hungry or thirsty and grabbed the necessary provisions from his pack, never really stopping his pace. He could feel that his legs were tiring, but the back of his mind was urging him ever forward, as if his life depended on it.

The tunnels Leo walked through had gone through carved hallways to rough cavern walls and back again several times. Finally, he came across a corridor that had torches lighting the way. His arms had grown tired from carrying the large torch the whole way, so he decided to put it with his pack. It seemed too valuable to leave behind.

Leo placed the torch on the ground and attempted to snuff it. He blew on it, used a rag from his bag, and even stomped on it, but the flame refused to budge. It must've been enchanted or something, which made sense. How else were they making torches that remained lit in a rarely-traveled labyrinth? As he was trying to kill the flame, something caught his ear. Something made a noise that wasn't him. He didn't stop or make any movements to indicate he heard a noise, but he was now on high alert.

There was another noise, a tiny hint of an echo coming from further down the hallway. Leo couldn't feign ignorance for long. He picked his torch back off the ground, holding it in front of himself defensively. There was a sudden barrage of noise, a flurry of frantic footsteps heading directly his way in the tunnel. Leo crouched down a little bit and hugged the wall, hoping he could manage to catch whatever was coming by surprise. Instead, what was coming surprised him.

"Fuck shit fuck fuck fuck!" echoed through the corridor. Leo craned his head forward. Was that-?

"Jack Hoy!" came a scream in the same direction. "You turn your happy ass around and help me fight this thing!" Riley Hoyt's voice, clearly running out of breath, rang true. Leo started walking back up the cavern.

"A crossroads! Pick this one, let's hide!"

"This tunnel is full of light, how is that-"

"Shut up or it'll hear us!" Jack and Riley whipped around the corner of the tunnel about 20 yards ahead of Leo.

"Okay, don't panic," Jack hissed to Riley, "but I think something else is in this tunnel. Just be quiet and maybe it won't notice us."

"I can hear it coming. We're so dead." Riley clenched his teeth in anticipation. Leo slowly strode forward until he was almost right behind the two other Grid Corps guys.

"It's remarkable you knuckleheads aren't both dead yet." Leo waved his torch at the boys and removed the hood of his cloak.

"Leo! Boy am I glad to see you!" Jack exclaimed, jumping up to slug Leo on the shoulder. "We've been running around this place getting chased by this ghost creature thing."

"What creature?" Leo asked, brow furrowing.

"That one." Riley pointed at the end of the corridor where a red sort of specter was floating in the intersection of several tunnels. It was barely glowing, seemingly made of red steam. Noticeably not translucent were two knight's gauntlets floating in front of the creature, with pointed ends like claws. When Riley spoke, the spirit appeared to whip around, and piercing blue lights like eyes stared right through the boys.

"Run!" Jack yelled, and the trio immediately took off back down the corridor where Leo had just come from.

IT'S WAR!

Extraordinary Meeting of the Baggielandian Cabinet to Address the Deteriorating Relations between the Prosaic Union of Gnejs and the Imperial Glorious Empire of Baggieland

Foreign Minister: "Ladies and Gentlemen, there is grave news emerging from Gnejs. Fandango Molineux III, an influential Gnejsian, has called for all out war between our once friendly nations, and it seems that this call to arms has received a favourable response from some sections of the Gnejsian populace."

King Alswitch: "Great! A scrap, just name the time and the place and I'll be there."

Foreign Minister: "Your Majesty, this is not the usual fist-fight outside Dartmouth Hill stadium on a Saturday afternoon. This is actual war… with guns."

King Alswitch: "So what's the problem? Just send out our military."

Defence Minister: "I wouldn't be so hasty… our military isn't that strong. Our air-force only has a handful of aircraft, and they're all ancient and mothballed. We have a tiny standing army and all they're good for is to parade around in front of Victor Frederick Palace, causing nothing but delays in Hawthorn city centre. However, we do have a large navy, but Baggieland hasn't been involved in a war in living memory. All our sailors know is to sail to foreign lands, go on shore-leave, get drunk and start brawls with the locals. Let's face it, those pirates of HMS Onslaught have more combat experience than we do, and all they ever do is sink ferries!"

Finance Minister: "Which is great for our ferry-building industry!"

Foreign Minister: "It appears that the King's suggestion of using our football hooligans to fight this war might be the best solution."

Home Secretary: "I'll get those super-fans to volunteer right away."

Bread and Circuses Minister: "Wait! I've got a solution to this situation. We're not ready for a war, and I'm pretty sure Gnejs isn't either. Instead of declaring all-out war, why don't we organise a sports-fight between one Gnejsian and one Baggie to settle our differences? The winner can claim bragging rights for their nation, and we could even make it into an annual contest… with a Certificate of Superior Culture and Couth – valid for one year – for the winning nation."

Home Secretary: "That's a great idea! But who's going to fight?"

Foreign Minister: "I know which Gnejsian I'd like to see in the ring. That nauseating woman, Gertrude Molineux, she's the most vocal of all the anti-Baggies over there."

King Alswitch: "And I'll be her opponent!"

Bread and Circuses Minister: "I think it should be a woman who fights her."

King Alswitch: "Only women can fight… when did I pass that law?"

Bread and Circuses Minister: "You can still fight on Saturday afternoons Your Majesty, we just need a woman to face off against another woman."

Defence Minister: "How about Queen Alma?"

King Alswitch: "No, she won't want to mess her hair up, it takes her hours every morning to do her hair."

Home Secretary: "How about that sports reporter?"

Foreign Minister: "Lei Siulung?"

Home Secretary: "That's the one, I believe she has a black-belt in kung fu."

Bread and Circuses Minister: "Right, I'll get that organised and inform the Gnejsians immediately."

Box scores will have to come later, I am still on RL works so this time I used a piece that I wrote previously

Time: Present Day
Important ties against Sharktail and Delaclava to determine playoff eligibility
Report by Sporting Daily
Athens, Delaclava - The last time the Red Panjias played Delaclava, it was a sloppy draw at home that gave the Red Panjias a single point. This time round, however, there is absolutely no room for error as Adnan Suliaha aims for a solid 6 points out of 6 against fellow playoff-spot contenders.

The Red Panjias head into Matchday 19 4th in the group, with only 2 playoff spots to contend for over the matchday. With Delaclava 2 points ahead but having played one game more, the game in Athens will surely be a fantastic time to leapfrog them and put themselves in 3rd. The win will surely also put pressure on Sharktail, who are 4 points behind but have 1 game in hand. However, assistant Head Coach Katiri Hedge has downplayed the importance of the crucial away game, saying that there was "no pressure" for the players. "So long as they do their best, there isn't much to be worried about," he told reporters at a usual pre-match conference.

Also in the limelight was the decision to stick with the current team of 35 players for the remainder of the tournament. While Adnan Suliaha defended it as a co-ordinated decision in light of the current status of the team, many Poafmersian reporters and fans have been questioning the decision not to experiment with possibly better players to improve the team's performance. Adnan instead requested the fans to be patient with the team renewal process and suggested that there are lots of opportunities in the future.

Electrum 1–1 Delte
Player-Reporter Kim Samrodd in Centralis, Electrum for Radio Luxinterior

It was a long way to go for a football match, and I have to say there was a lot of stoic stiff upper lippism at the end of a creditable draw when we heard about other results and realised the expectation of winning the world cup at the first attempt had been narrowly defeated. "Oh well," said our supremely stiff upper lipped captain, Eremo Olde. "Nevermind, nevermind," added coach Clentin, "we gave it our best shot, what?" The home team, apparently something of a disappointment to their own supporters, were pelted with turnips. Someone announced over the tannoy that turnip pelters would be banned from future disappointments, but the Deltic team were impressed, to a man, with the quality of the rhizomes on offer. For my part I was proud to receieve a warm handshake and a word of praise from Electrumite forward Einarsson, King of the Armoured Bears. He also swapped shirts, which means I now have the most famous tent in the valley for the next school camping trip to the Garga Marshes.

Delte 0–1 Sarzonia
Sports Correspondent Polka Lunn at Ildemorton Road for The White Flag Military Tattoo Magazine (Sports Section)

I won't dwell overly long on the finer details of this match, but certainly mention should be made of surely the best away kits in the whole group - if the league table reflected sartorial elegance on the road then congratulations would have to be due to The Stars who would already have booked passage to all the various finals host nations by now. As it is, this is about skills with the ball not with the wardrobe, and Sarzonia are only a meagre joint-second with a game in hand. So still quite good then, as they showed us in no uncertain terms. Kim Samrodd looked uncharacteristically proud to pick up a swapsie from Sarzonian player of the match Ernie Mabree who ran the rightback a merry dance all match. Credit to Kim for at least trying to keep up with him - the only time they seemed on a level par was walking down the tunnel at the end of the match discussing the wicking on the Sarzonia kits: after all, it seems quite miraculous.

VISIT DELTE
A Guide For Adventurers & Reluctant Football Teams

Health & Safety: The Valley of The River Delte is a relatively safe place to visit, if difficult to find, and therefore should be easily enjoyed in a relaxed way by most everyone who comes to stay. Of course, no single place outside of Utopia is entirely without its hazards, and the valley is no different in that respect. Firstly, the river - you can drown in it. It is quite a strong current all year round and is not for playing in. High in the northwest uplands, the stunning Garga Marshes can be perilous - sudden and unexpected weather conditions including fog, pelting rain, snowy squalls and gale-force winds can surprise hikers, whilst the ground can be boggy and lethal. No-one wants to drown in ‘quicksand’ - a primordial fear of the yuman bean - but if its going to happen anywhere or to anyone, it will be to an inattentive and ill-prepared tourist up in the Garga Marshes. Take rations, appropriate clothing and preferably a guide.

The village of Overtane to the south of Oswark is Screvenor country, and should not be visited under any circumstances - likewise, if anyone points out a Screvenor to you in other places, do your very best to avoid them. A tribe from the neighbouring Screve valley, the Screvenors are unlike the Delts in every way - emotional, aggressive, unstable, unruly, uncouth, unfriendly, and generally anti-social. Many Delts wonder why they come to town at all and privately some even wish they would go back to their own valley. This is not spoken out loud in polite company and should never be said by visitors to the valley - but it remains precautionary to keep well away from the Screvenors (Screves, to use a perjorative term that you should never, ever say out loud; or ‘dirty Screve’, to speak the unspeakable - you could get a night in the Auld Triangle and deported for less).

There are no apex predators to be concerned with in the valley, although rumours abound up in the north-west in the misty Garga Marshes of jaguars, mountain lions, bears, wolves, wild dogs, rabid otters, goliath eagles, hairy river dolphins, ancient alligators, neanderthal trolls, swamp sirens, bold deceiver dwarves, Moss Thing, old Cthulian devils, walking trees, werestatues, stray Z-day refugees and deadly-tiresome ancient mariners with surprisingly strong grips. We are quite sure none of it is true. More practically, avoid fields of cows who might get jittery and stampede, or more likely quietly separate to reveal a highly territorial and irritated bull; other agricultural hazards include butting goats, savagely bold and inexplicably angry geese, and over-zealous watchdogs. Common sense prevails - stay alert and close gates behind you.

Aaliyah Lust (naked except a hat) and Crown Princess Bella Dallas (naked except a hat) at Dazza Dallas Stadium, Jeruselem, for qualification match day 19 after Jeruselem beat Potenzia 1-0

Aaliyah:
Hey everyone, this is Aaliyah Lust for Naked News Jeruselem once again reporting on the World Cup 91.
I'm not with Princess Katherine Annabelle Dallas for once!
She's busy recruiting new staff, I'm with Crown Princess Bella Dallas, the daughter of our dear leader!
And the future dear leader of our nation.

Bella: Good afternoon people of Jeruselem and everyone else from overseas watching. I'm sure there's an overseas audience out there.
Aaliyah: Today is qualification match day 19 of World Cup 91 leaving just three left. Today at Dazza Dallas Stadium, the visitors are Potenzia who have had just a bad time with one draw for the only points they have.
Bella: Yes ... someone has to be last, I guess it's them this time.
Aaliyah: Next round is round 20 with us having the bye meaning, we really need to win this one.
Bella: Yes, you need to win the game before your bye.
Aaliyah: Like all groups, Group 4 is coming down the select few who can qualify. And with 19 of 22 games played, time is running out or in some cases time has run out.

Bella: Sadly for all but the top 3 in Group 4, time has run out.
Aaliyah: Today Commonwealth of Baker Park had to sit out the bye, not that they needed to be stressed about anything due to their position in the group. They will remain top of group regardless of any result today.
Bella: They'll qualify, no need to worry about them.
Aaliyah: So it was the action with the other 10 teams including ourselves here today.
Bella: For some reason today, it was just horrible hot weather. No clouds, but the bloody wind was also hot.
Aaliyah: Oh yes, the desert winds were bit too much today as well. Extra sand your face is not a good thing.

Bella: Which is why we're wearing hats
Aaliyah: Pyazhnaya hosted Trolleborg but got themselves beaten up 3-0. Well, another 3 points for our main rival. I guess we expect them to win these games.
Bella: They need to win all games from now on really.
Aaliyah: Tekatus hosted Acastanha but just got themselves thrashed 4-1 for their efforts.
Bella: I can't blame them for not even trying, they are 2nd last.
Aaliyah: Ranoria scored a home win 3-1 over Gortolekua. Not that the result makes any difference now.

Bella: Ranoria are the one of the best defensive teams in Group 4, it's just they haven't scored enough goals to make that count.
Aaliyah: TotoMishin drew 1-1 with visitors Britonisea in the bottom team clash.
Bella: I was expecting Britonisea to win that one but doesn't matter anyway.
Aaliyah: So it's just Potenzia visiting Jeruselem right here.
Bella: It's pretty much must win for Jeruselem from here, with Trolleborg just one win off us.
Aaliyah: Due to the less than ideal conditions today, and they were not ideal for anyone outdoors. But Jeruselem kinda scraped a 1-0 win which wasn't what we wanted, we kinda expected a much better result.

Bella: I noticed we rested a few players today, I think they need some time go get over some annoying injuries.
Aaliyah: We were a little off today, but the regulars were rested today.
Bella: I guess we'll have more a rest as we have a bye next round.
Aaliyah: Byes are a weird thing, but sometimes they are useful. Timing is everything though, you don't want a bye last game.
Bella: Yeah, we've had that problem in our history ...
Aaliyah: And most of the time, not to our favour ...

Bella: I guess job done for Kate and the Princesses. I would have wanted a more convincing win for our goal difference.
Aaliyah: Right, qualification day 20 is next and with our bye is Trolleborg hosting a well rested Commonwealth of Baker Park.
Bella: Selfishly, we want Commonwealth of Baker Park to win this one. The other 4 games don't matter to our position.
Aaliyah: Trolleborg need to win this one to level the points with Jeruselem
Bella: Yes, but a win for Baker Park would pretty much seal qualification so they would want to win.
Aaliyah: I guess we know what result we want.

Bella: Nothing personal against the nation of Trolleborg, but we'd like to qualify for this cup.
Aaliyah: One quirk of the byes in Group 4, the current top 3 have byes in the last 4 games. Commonwealth of Baker Park on day 19, Jeruselem on day 20 and Trolleborg on day 21.
Bella: I think it's more to do with how the draw was done
Aaliyah: It does make every game in the last 4 rounds even more pressurised for the top 3.
Bella: For a really close group, yes. Commonwealth of Baker Park have nothing to worry about I think.
Aaliyah: Match day 21 has Commonwealth of Baker Park v Acastanha and TotoMishin v Jeruselem with Trolleborg bye. Last day is Jeruselem v Ranoria, Gortolekua v Commonwealth of Baker Park and Acastanha v Trolleborg.

Bella: Funny Acastanha have to play the top 3 in last two rounds. Ranoria aren't pushovers either, they beat us last time we played them but we have the home game.
Aaliyah: Now, what do you with yourself? For someone with both parents who played in World Cup, you aren't even playing football.
Bella: Yes well, apparently I have to be protected at home so World Cup football with international travel is out of the question.
Aaliyah: What about local football?
Bella: I guess I'm really not interested in that, if I want to play football it would be World Cup.
Aaliyah: If it's not football what is it?

Bella: Weirdly, I'm working on becoming a pilot which sounds even more dangerous.
Aaliyah: I'm dangerous with a car ...
Bella: Before people think I want to be fighter pilot, err that's not in the plan.
Aaliyah: Well, that's it from me. Err, see you all later when we report on our bye and match day 20.
Bella: Yeah, see everyone later.
Aaliyah: Don't forget to support the team as we have just two games left to play. It's all or nothing from here!

Weekly joint processing cabinet meeting.

Location: Office of the Prime Minister, Meridian, Port Kejm.

"Very well, that brings us to item twenty five on today's agenda. The topic is a briefing from The Minister for Foreign Affairs regarding current events. If there are no initial remarks from those present, I give the word to the Minister for Foreign Affairs. No remarks? Good. Grethe, please proceed."

Prime Minister Tangeus Oxwald took his seat while gesturing with his left-hand, prompting the Foreign Minister to stand. She positioned herself at the far end of the table and greeted the joint cabinet with a nod of her head.

"Thank you, Prime Minister. Comrades. To begin with, I bring you a short orientation on current affairs in continental Rushmore from my Department of Non-Aligned Diplomacy. Election Day is looming in The Democratic Republic of Nyowani Kitara, and the situation is tense. A recent terrorist attack in the nearby United Republics of Yue Zhou, and the current Kitaran president’s handling of its aftermath, has contributed to temperatures rising even further. Results of the election are expected tonight. Moving down south, a potential conflict of succession is brewing in The Matriarchy of Cassadaigua. Several states, both Rushmori and from other regions, have publicly decreed their preferences. Per our standard protocol, my ministry has issued a statement from the Union, reaffirming our diplomatic stance of courteous non-alignment towards the states in question. In keeping with our guiding principle of non-interference and absolute state sovereignty, our statement also wishes them well in resolving their internal matters in whatever way they see fit. As per usual, our statement has not been picked up by any of the big continental news agencies, and has produced no known reactions whatsoever.”

The Prime Minister nodded. “Very good. And from the Department of Diplomatic Friendships?”

The Foreign Minister shuffled her papers and took a swig of water from her bottle. She looked slightly uneasy. “Yes, sir. It concerns our Friends in Baggieland, where there has been… eh, developments.” She trailed off, and looked like she was trying to figure out how to continue.

The Prime Minister cut in instead. “I was under the impression that we had resolved the latest string of unfortunate events regarding our Baggie Friends, that bizarre poetry debacle being handled by Magnus and his people over at the MCSCA? The stunt of having poor Georg Heraklit eating lasagna with a spoon on live television was perhaps in bad taste – I hear it even cost him his sponsorship deal with Valhall Chicken – but my understanding was that this indeed brought joy and a sense of cultural recognition to our Friends.”

The Foreign Minister nodded. “Indeed, Prime Minister, it did. However, it would seem Anti-Baggie elements within our society have kept up their agitation, and unfortunately, they have managed to undo our previous efforts at maintaining our Friends contentment.”

The Prime Minister sighed and looked visibly annoyed. “I see. So what is our situation as of now?”

The Foreign Minister cleared her throat. “It would seem that our Friends are under the impression that the Union is seriously contemplating waging holy war on them.”

There was an eerie silence in the room, apart from the Minister for Fisheries and Coastal Affairs mumbling something about ‘desecration’ to himself. The Prime Minister massaged his temples. After a few minutes, he spoke.

“How is this possible? Are you telling me someone, somehow, leaked what happened when that deranged Molinuex boy got into my office? It was a bad enough he was able to gain entry to begin with, but now someone’s spinning it like we’re seriously considering implementing his ravings? Waging war? On a Friend? That is the most grave of breaches against the Customs of Friendship. Please do not tell me our Friends – granted a Rock of Friendship in 1836 for their aid of the Union during our troubles with the potato plague – actually believe we would ever consider something like this?”

As the Prime Minister mentioned the Rock of Friendship, all present raised their left hand, positioned it on the middle of their chest while closing their eyes, and mumbled unintelligibly.

The Foreign Minster first shook her head, and then nodded. “I am afraid it is true, Prime Minister. Word has somehow reached the Baggie Foreign Service, and ultimately, the King himself.”

The Prime Minister got up and started pacing around the room. “But this is absurd! We don’t even have a military! This is known. How would we ever wage war on someone? What if they strike first? Friends or no, they are known for being somewhat errati… Eh, spontaneous.”

“Indeed, sir, but thankfully it would seem like the Baggies are not interested in conventional warfare. Instead they have suggested an alternative way of settling this grievance that has come up between us.”

“Well, let’s hear it! Come on, Grethe.” The Prime Minister was flustered. He was rarely flustered.

“They propose an organized fight. Between one Gnejsian and one Baggie.”

“To the death?”

The Foreign Minister shuffled her papers once again, found the right one, and studied it briefly. “No, Prime Minister. Conventional fistfight until one party gives. Apparently, the winner shall be granted bragging rights for their nation, and they also suggest making it into an annual contest, with a Certificate of Superior Culture and Couth – valid for one year – for the winning nation."

There was silence once again. They all looked at each other, but nobody dared say the first word. In the end, it was Lennart, the Minister for Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, who spoke.

“Doesn’t sound that bad. The Customs of Friendship says you must give to your Friend. If this is what our Friend wants, then we must clearly give it to them. Especially under the current circumstances,” he said and shrugged. The Prime Minister nodded. “Agreed, seems like a small price to pay, all things considered. However, who would want to volunteer for something like that? Miss Dis? Do we still have Fandango Molineux III in that broom closet?”

The Prime Minister’s assistant seemingly materialized from the grey shades of the meeting room’s walls and smiled menacingly. “No, Prime Minister, but if you require his presence, that can be arranged.”

Before the Prime Minister had time to respond, The Foreign Minister raised her hand and started speaking. “Actually, the Baggies already have a candidate in mind. Ironically, a Molineux, but not the son. They want Gertrude Molineux.”

The Prime Minster laughed aloud. “Gertrude? I heard she was committed after the incident in the People’s Chamber and coming back from that wholly unsanctioned trip to Baggieland.”

The Foreign Minister nodded energetically. “Indeed, Prime Minister, she was. But only briefly. I just got word that my people have tracked her down. She’s been herding goats and producing her own brand of brown cheese on the western edge of The Interior.”

The Prime Minister nodded. “Very well, and what did she have to say about the matter?”

The Foreign Minister scrolled on her phone, and looked up. “She’ll do it.”

Tangues Oxwald sat down in his chair, and studied his cabinet. Then he nodded, and spoke.

“Ok. Then it is settled. We will offer up Gertrude Molineux to fight against the Baggie. I’m sure there is absolutely no way sending a mad person - with a burning hatred for Baggieland in general, and the royal family in particular - can go horribly wrong and backfire on us. Well, that brings us to item twenty six on today's agenda. The topic is the question of lacking funds in the carbon capture and storage project outside of Nokkeby. The Minister for Environmental Affairs and the Minister for Finance jointly brings the matter to us, and if there are no initial remarks from those present, I give the word to the Minister for Environmental Affairs. No remarks? Good. Sven, please proceed."

What can be said that hasn't already been previewed about the Top League? We know that Maethoru SC and Aminey CS are favoured to finish first and second - the order is TBD - with Straudum VV unlikely to lose their status as 'forever third'. Northern football is undergoing a small renaissance with Schemerdrecht SVV - whose issues were discussed before - having a decent shot at the IFCF spots. The other big clubs, Katashi-Kanatsu and Miradela GD, should complete the top six. Skipping all the way to the area around 12th, it's not unthinkable that Gehrenna FC or Arboren FC are going down. WSR AFC are too much of a commodity by now, so it's either the Capitals' second club (Gehrenna) or 'pretty much the only thing in the northeast', Arboren, to go back down. The latter have a great home advantage in winter, so we should see a boost in the cold months that might help them stay up.

Something we haven't mentioned last time is the status of the rivalries. The Top League used to be the home of the big rivalries: the Eastern one (Katashi-Kanatsu versus Advance Alara, which is still intact, between largely equal clubs). The Finisterran one (Miradela GD versus Branvon CD, which started out massively in the favour of Branvon before dramatically shifting towards Miradela, which is still the most likely of the two to win). The Northern one (Schemerdrecht SVV versus Straudum VV, two clubs that used to be 'on the outside looking in' but nowadays help define the Top League as a competitive, IFCF CL-level competition).

With the addition of Gehrenna FC, we now have a Capital derby: Maethoru SC versus Gehrenna FC - and it's easy to say that the former is the favourite by far. Then there's the Cote Australien derby, between Aminey CS and Tanques AOE: it's northern Cote Austral (and its democratic values, classical architecture, culture, and entertainment) versus southern Cote Austral (with its unbeatable weather, easy living, great views and landscapes). It's the money, pressure, and media of Aminey versus the unlikely champions of Tanques. Tanques were champions of the Top League well before Aminey CS, then relegated despite having about 30% of the national team playing for them, before making it back with a vengeance.

Image

On the topic of rivalries: the southern one, between Bruncester United AFC and Cirelbourne United, used to be exclusively a Top League affair before both clubs crashed down into the second level, which has now become their home for a while - and the rivalry lives on.

Neither club is likely to promote back for a while, and that's a shame for all fans of classic, defensive, Ko-orenite football. No, the promotion candidates now reside further north: Sterrenwolde FC joins the northern Top League clubs in a slight northern resurgence, or Huthwich and Iduloren finally gives the city of Willowbourne a shot at greatness in soccer. These two clubs seem leaps and bounds ahead of the competition this season.

At the other end of the second tier, it's Amandine AdF, or maybe Teragaseki or Sydberg to relegate into the southern third tier, while Myaranowra and SC Sokrona might go down to the northern third tier. These five clubs are at a significant disadvantage, with two clubs relegating in the end.

The second tier might have a northeastern derby if SC Sokrona maintains their position and Arboren FC relegate. Aside from those, this tier has turned into a southwestern affair - never a region with huge clubs (except Maynard AFC) - but a region of lots of 'best of the rest' instead. Grainshire United, Cirelbourne and Bruncester, but also Sydberg, and in recent history Brighthaven, Burnet, Maynard, Ambergate, Leeshire, Mawrystwyth... we always took southwestern soccer for granted, but they're a few years away from turning the second tier into a glorified regional league.

Image

The third tier is difficult to escape, with only the champions of each zone (north and south) promoting, but there are a combined six teams going down from here. Add to that the small differences between clubs and it's a bloodbath. Shinsen Sunrise is a club that sticks out by a small margin, capitalising on northeastern talent. Cirelbourne Townside - always second fiddle behind the other Cirelbourne - might join the big club in the second tier with a bit of luck. Who would have expected that, two/five/ten years ago? In the other zone, it's Planneige and Soibourg that have a slight edge, but we also wouldn't be surprised if one of those four go down instead.

Image

The fourth division consists of six geographic zones, and each zone supplies one promotor. Seventy-two (semi) pro clubs and just six opportunities to rise above... add to that the difficulty of holding on to players that are easily snapped up by third, second, or even Top League clubs, and escaping this level might be luck more than skill at times.

Zone A, the southwestern one, harbours a lot of ex-second tier clubs, with the experience and knowledge from those times. This looks to be the most difficult one to win. Zones B-F are a lot more doable, with Bellmare Union, Chaganca, Norille, Constillan, Nitoya, Egevea, MEZWO-VEDC Lamau, Dentillon, Eaglebury having potential.

Image

At this level, it's not so much about the results: it's about personal development. The best we can do here is point at players we expect to see at the highest echelons of the sport in 4-5 years time:

21 years old
Most 21-year olds have opted out of the Uni/Academy leagues, securing a professional contract. Still, there are two players that look like excellent role players at the top of the second division or mid-table Top League teams: Naoaka Oogami, and Arnaud Neri. A midfielder and a fullback/winger, respectively.

20 years old
Very few of them have gotten professional contracts, so there's a lot left to discover. A trio of Cote Australien players are the big signatures here: Géra Bethune, a crafty player with great technique, there's Flori Vaillancourt, who looks more like a traditional striker, and Mari Delsarte, an all-rounder that the Economical Institute of the Amandine plays all over the place.

19 years old
Everything is still to play for at this age bracket. They're usually fairly well rounded as to the position they play and how seriously they take the game, but there's still a lot that needs to go well to deliver them to the top. The most successful players could be Ryobe Takagaki, a creative midfielder in a Katashi university. Or Wemagun Cyamou, a rare Tarrashall talent, who looks more like a rugby forward. Cornelia Gloren, from the north, is a stereotypical Straudum candidate: tough, defensive, and a little cheaty. Maran Liganier and Maurice Michaux are two more Francophone talents (there sure are a lot of those nowadays).

18 years old
There are no surefire world class players here, but Rachel Walbuck, Richard Twickaway, and Henric Laringels are three names that deserve to be here given their performance at Dayfade, Grainshire, and Ysbeer respectively. All are physically ahead of their peers, but tactically not as developed yet.

17 years old
This is looking like a promising class so far. Thomas Finsterrais has had some setbacks but has come back strongly. Raudhjan Ekaregnau is a physical specimen with surprising technical skills. Crewnett, Lepelaar, Scarshell, Mamanau, Hemshade, and Odhoniten are all defensive prospects that should get some Ko-orenite national team clean sheets in a generation.

16 years old
At this point, this is just speculation. Laza is ahead of his peers in on-the-ball skills. Aedil is an Altioran wingback in the same vein as the ones playing now. yOraenaig, Torre, and Orpshire are exciting to watch but we really need to see more development in the next 2-3 years - worry not, there's enough time.

THE BILLBOARD GAZETTE

THIS IS THE RACE

Heading into final 2 days of World Cup qualification, Chartistan, Astograth and Garifunya locked in battle for final Playoff spot

The feelings in Rumiatzi for the Chartistan national team are those of a missed golden opportunity, a chance for Chartistan to put one door into the World Cup playoffs. You already seen the score by now - 5-2 in favor of the Olibondeka, with Olentzaro Karazatorre grabbing a brace as he aged like a fine wine against the Chartistan backline of Reland, Harry, Smith-Shuster and Walter. As much as many Chartistan fans will like to say that this is indeed over, and a trip to the Cup of Harmony is likely for the Chartistan national team, they aren't completely out of the picture yet. While Astograth is leading the race to join whoever comes 2nd between The Holy Empire and Vilita as Group 7's representatives in the playoffs, the race has only reached the home stretch, with 2 more games for Chartistan and Garifunya and 1 game left for the Olibondeka to decide who exactly has a shot of sneaking into the biggest tournament in sports. For your viewing and speculating pleasure, here are the final games that these sides will play and what they need to make 3rd place. NOTE: Goal difference and other tiebreakers are not included unless otherwise specified.

ASTOGRATH
Game remaining: MD22 @ Unpleasant
Can make playoffs with: A win and hoping Garifunya doesn't get 4 points from their last 2, a draw and hoping Garifunya doesn't win either of their games, a loss and hoping Garifunya doesn't get so much as a draw.
Chartistan also applies here: If Garifunya doesn't accomplish the scenarios needed to clinch above, Chartistan can surpass Astograth if Astograth win and Chartistan win both games, if Astograth draw and Chartistan get 4 from their last 2, and if Astrograth lose and Chartistan get 2 points from their last 2.

Perhaps the easiest path out of these 3 teams, Astograth have a break on Matchday 21 and travel to still pointless Unpleasant on the final day. Considering how dominate they were in the reverse fixture, giving the worst team in these qualifiers a 4-0 beatdown at home, it should be easy for the Olives to march to Unpleasant and score a win not only to ice a playoff berth, but condemn their opposition to 0 points and a -48 or below goal differential, the worst in the entirety of the qualifiers and the worst goal differential perhaps in recent memory. However, even a win won't make them 100% safe. They have to hope Garifunya doesn't get a win and a draw or greater in their last 2 to qualify for the playoffs, and even if they fail, they have to hope to Christ that Chartistan doesn't win their last 2 to sneak in. If it's a draw or even a shocking loss to this abysmal team, however, things get MUCH harder, and they might have to rely on their opposition also blowing up. This game is Astograth's to lose, but the race for the final spot isn't for them to lose...

GARIFUNYA
Games remaining: MD21 @ Vilita, MD22 vs Geektopia
Can make playoffs with: All 6 points, 4 points, 3 points and Astograth not winning and 2 points or 1 point and Astograth losing their game.
Chartistan also applies here: If Garifunya doesn't accomplish the scenarios needed to clinch above, Chartistan can surpass Garifunya if they get all 6 points and Garifunya dropping at least 1 point, 4 points and Garifunya getting 2 points, 3 points and Garifunya getting 1 point, and 2 points and Garifunya getting no points.

This is Garifunya's qualifiers to lose, but their biggest test will come in Matchday 21 against the Jungle Rebels in the Tropics, who themselves need a miracle to surpass The Holy Empire and qualify automatically. Should they survive and get at least 1 points against the former hosts of the World Cup, it's off back home against a Geektopia side who, while still technically eligible for qualification, need all hell to break loose to snatch 3rd from the front pack. A win against them, coupled with that Vilita draw and they make the playoffs, unless Chartistan does better or Astograth demolish Unpleasant away to beat them on goal difference (Garifunya have beat Astograth on head to head, but lost on head to head against Chartistan). However, wins against both opposition will qualify them for the playoffs no matter what happens elsewhere. That first match against Vilita however will be the ultimate test.

CHARTISTAN
Games remaining: MD21 vs Unpleasant, MD22 @ Darkmania
Can make playoffs with: All 6 points and Garifunya getting 4 or less, 4 points, Garifunya getting 2 or less and Astograth not winning, 3 points, Garifunya getting 1 and Astograth losing their game and 2 points and Garifunya and Astograth losing their games

But by far Chartistan has the easiest last couple games, at least on paper. They already dealt with the top 4 and 6th through 8th as well as Star United States, so they have to play the 3rd to last and bottom ranked teams in their group to round things out. First up, and again it's Unpleasant, this time rocking to Old Town Park. In the reverse leg on Matchday 10, they lost 4-0 to Chartistan AT HOME. Now away from home, they are almost universally expected to lose, unless they REALLY want to shed off that 0 points record either in this game or against Garifunya. However that last game in the qualifiers, against Darkmania, can be tricky. Darkmania actually DREW to Chartistan on Matchday 11 in Billboard, so they have the high ground during the away leg, but not by all that much. If Chartistan do get all 6 points, and more likely than not they will, all they need to do is for Garifunya to not win both of their games and they will be sailing through to the playoffs with one foot in the World Cup door. They can still make it with worse, however, if their opposition do worse. However, a disastrous (Read, only 1 point or no points) final 180 will mean they will not make it no matter what. These games are for Chartistan to lose.

If by some miracle the Sarzonian national football team were to somehow advance to the World Cup 91 finals, there would be a weird coincidence with the World Cup 85 team managed by Kevin Connelly.

Both teams would have draws and victories against Darmen. In Sarzonia's shock run to the World Cup 85 proper, Darmen entered with the No. 26 rank in the multiverse and were an on-paper favourite to qualify. The Stars were ranked 65th and were nobody's pick to qualify. And yet, the Stars of that era slammed the door in Darmeni faces and consigned them to the Cup of Harmony. This time around is a little different. This Darmeni squad were ranked No. 79 entering World Cup 91 qualifying, and Sarzonia were the higher ranked side, but the Stars all but punched their tickets to the World Cup proper with a convincing 5-0 blowout win in front of an appreciative crowd at Dave Wilson Stadium in Woodstock.

Stars manager Nathan Hanifer said he wasn't all that interested in parallels with the World Cup 85 team. He realised many of the leaders on that team are now retired, even though a few stalwarts remain from that team. More importantly, however, he said he said his focus was on this team and trying to get the current Stars into the proper for the first time since that World Cup 85 team.

"It's an interesting coincidence to you folks, perhaps," Hanifer said. "But to us, it's just a footnote. We're here to do a job, and that's to position ourselves for a place in the World Cup proper."

Hanifer was asked about Derne's Kim Samrodd's comments about the Sarzonian away kits after the team's 1-0 away win pushed the Stars just two points behind Huayramarca for top in the Group 5 table. He said, simply, "that decision's out of my cost centre," before breaking out into a wide smile that betrayed how appreciative he was of the compliment.

"You're smiling. Why?" a reporter asked.

"Hey, a compliment's a compliment!" Hanifer said. "We're happy with them even if they have nothing to do with tactics or on-field performance."

The Stars will close out qualifying with a home match against Tyskerlund at Nottingham Pavilion and an away affair against Cassadaigua, who are now behind the Stars for a playoff position after Sarzonia took advantage of the Dagan bye with a full six points from their two matches in the cycle. Now, only two cycles remain, and group leaders Huayramarca have a bye on Matchday 21 before they face Ancherion in their finale. Forward Jake Campos said he wasn't concerned with what the group leaders do.

"We can only focus on ourselves and what we do on the pitch," he said. "If we can take care of business, it won't matter."

As for the third team in the four-team race for a spot in either the proper or the playoffs, Electrum host Cassadaigua in their finale before they have a bye on Matchday 22. That leaves Sarzonia and Cassadaigua as the two sides in the chase who have two matches each. And, the last one for both is against each other in Cassadaigua.

"They're going to be amped up," forward Holly Cambrio said. "They're fighting for their lives and we'll have to do the same." Midfielder and team captain Clayton Wilson agreed, saying that talk of matching the Fillies' intensity wasn't going to be good enough."

"We can't talk about 'matching their intensity' or 'weathering the storm'," he said. "We have to BE the storm."

Magpies come up short against Valentine Z, playoff hopes dwindle

Christopher Teschner, Marienburg Herald

Pluvia and the Saxean Isles came into the home stretch of World Cup 91 qualifying with an outside shot at finishing in second place and well in contention for third place, tied with the Dragons of Yuezhou with four games to play. After a 3-1 road win against Kamisato Ayaka, it seemed like they were on track, especially with the reserves coming up with the win. However, those hopes seem to have been dashed in Marienburg, as the visiting Valentine Z team came in and held the Magpies to a 2-2 draw, not only putting themselves 5 points ahead of the Magpies with two games to play, but knocking the home team two points behind Yuezhou. Following the Dragons' 2-1 win over United Adaikes, and with a difficult two-game stretch of Nephara and Mercedini to go, are the Magpies' playoff chances anything more than theoretical?

The reserve squad (Zoecke, Schuettler, Weidenfeld, Bradley, Muir, Bohlen, Schuster, McGuire, Kingsley, Goldberg, and MacKay) went on the road to a Kamisato Ayaka squad surely looking for revenge after the Magpies whipped them 4-0 in Port Marian. But the Yashiro Swordswomen were sorely disappointed, as the Magpies scored both early and late, and held their opponents to just one late goal. Brodie McGuire scored off of a rebound of a Rory Goldberg shot in the eleventh minute, quieting the crowd early on. The score held until the 59th minute, during which time Leo Zoecke acquitted himself well, making multiple saves and generally directing traffic in front of the goal. In the 59th, Davis Kingsley used some fancy footwork to gain some space apart from the Kamisato Ayaka defenders, then looped a ball right into the box for Flynn MacKay, whose sprinting header made the score 2-0 and gave PSI travelling fans something to cheer about after it looked like the Magpies had lost their edge. Finally, in the 72nd minute, Michael Schuster, tied with Finlay Muir for the youngest player on the squad, made a daring run to intercept a lazy pass, took it down the pitch, and surprised the scrambling Kamisato Ayaka goalkeeper with a blast that thundered into the upper part of the net. Even though the Swordswomen scored, it wasn't nearly enough and the Magpies were on 28 points and hadn't lost in six games.

That undefeated streak is still alive, but the playoff hopes are all but gone. The Magpies' first team wasn't enough at home against Valentine Z. The Valentians scored a goal each in the first and second halves, and although PSI tied it both times, they could not come up with the winning goal. Rory Goldberg, team captain, continued to play well, finding the equaliser in the 67th minute, but individual heroics were not enough. Goldberg had three more shots on goal past the 67th, but two of them were easily-saved long shots and the third saw the Valentian keeper make a strong save. Other than Goldberg, the Magpies' offense was anemic, as Davis Kingsley's 36th minute corner kick actually deflected off a Valentian defender for an own goal rather than finding a Pluvian or Saxean head. Manager Laurent Chambéry shook his head ruefully after the game. "We did not generate enough chances nor take advantage of those we did come up with. This team has played much better in the second half, but it just wasn't enough today."

The schedule doesn't get any easier as the Magpies try to catch Yuezhou. They will travel to Mercedini, whom they managed to defeat 3-2 at home last time, followed by a visit from Nephara, who whipped them soundly, 6-2, the last time the two teams met. Mercedini, ranked ahead of PSI, are 4-2-2 in the second half, as compared to the Magpies' 3-5-0. Most recently, they took a shock 1-0 loss to The Gothanita Isles, but defeated Oberour ar Moro 2-1. At 27 points, their chances of taking a playoff spot are even less likely than the Magpies, but they'll be playing hard until the end. A draw would likely eliminate both teams, so look for some aggressive play in Zoloroni. Nephara, undefeated and far ahead of all other teams in the group, are almost a certain loss. The only hope for the Magpies is that the Nepharans send a "B" team and the Deadly Curse prove to be enough of a home-field advantage to get them over the line in some kind of a low-scoring affair. They are not technically out of it yet, but Chambéry and his team will have to show their quality (and hope for a Yuezhou stumble against Kamisato Ayaka and/or Valentine Z) to get a shot at a playoff game for a spot in the World Cup proper.

Postby Squidroidia » Fri May 27, 2022 10:01 am

For the longest time, Squidroidian television has long been dominated by the essenially 4 channel monopoly of SBN - The Squidroidian Broadcasting Network. Truth be told on any cable or satellite package in the country there were about 20 networks to choose from, with SBN's flagship station SBN 1 garnering high rated programs no matter what day it was. Its backup, SBN 2, formed the tandem that made the company a household name within Squidroidia, especially due to Higa Takanori's rule and the early days of Squidroidia, where it made and shown "government approved" programming that was better than the other 8 or so channels at the time could make. SBN didn't just have 1 and 2 to carry their empire. In the only nation that speaks any sort of Squiddish at any level, the language of the local Inkling population had its own channel from SBN, known as SBN Squid, which broadcasted SBN 1 and 2 programming in their native language. Lastly was SBN Sport, the main sports network in the country, which showed many of Squidroidia's sports leagues - Well, until financial factors and the like forced them to be relegated to obscurity, with the exception of the Squidroidian Super League, the top football league within Squidroidia.

For many a Squidroidian, going through the SBN channels was a day of life. The regular population found SBN 1 to be the right mix of news and entertainment. SBN 2's tap on the youngsters made it a draw for hip programming, and SBN Squid and Sport had their own niches too that were filled out in droves. There wasn't enough competition to beat SBN's hold, with most "rivals" getting their hands on foreign content to fill out their schedules and sell to advertisers, a market that SBN never got into. The other 16 or so channels (Well, 14 or so, since SBN had 2 other channels that didn't really fit in with their core 4 channels, SBN 3 and SBN Sport Extra) only survived because of their lure of advertising, and even then only a couple could even come close to SBN's ratings.

Of course, things would have to change. With the Fujiwara government being installed, and all the "Democratic Anarchy" it will bring, the intense deregulation of Squidroidian television brings with it a rath of possibilities. SBN, for example, would basically have to shift to advertising in order to survive, which is something that they have tested on 3 and Sport Extra and will be likely done on the main 4 channels before long. With the SBN's link with the Squidroidian government locked, most cable and satellite providers can, at will, also drop the channels from their services, which is, however, unlikely at this time. With all of this, SBN is being treated now not like a government service, but a buisness, just like all the other channels.

Oh yeah, and channels. The days of 20 channels on a satellite service are seemingly over, with the intense deregulations meaning that anybody with a signal to broadcast TV and the money and knowhow to do it can start up a channel and sell it to providers. Dozens of channels have already been gearing up for this change, and an arms race like this could push SBN towards the straights of television warfare. So much competition to rival it, only so little time to respond to it. I mean, podcasting has already been a war in of itself, with countless sports blogs covering topics from the IFCF to obscure oddities like the FLAGS competition in Anaia. Oh hey, I should probably listen to the Squidroidian FLAGS Podcast to see what they're going on about...

"...Debenham, Debenham, Debenham, huh... Best Ko-orenteerer in the entirety of Anaia huh...."

Oh come on, what even IS Ko-orenteering? Is it some sort of fantasy sport?

A Chef's Voyage

South Newlandia

"Hi, my name's Antoine Brousseau. For several years, I've been a chef, working in various restaurants throughout HUElavia. The sights and smells of cuisine have been a part of my life since I was very young. But now, it's time for a new change in my life. It's time to travel throughout the multiverse and sample the various dishes people has to offer. I don't know what's ahead for me, but I got the appetite to find out."

"This is A Chef's Voyage."

Warm and sunny. Sounds of animals around. These are the first thoughts I had landing in South Newlandia, an island in Esportiva. Filled with about 4 million South Newlandians, the country is renowned for their love and protection of animals and the environment, their frequent use of High-Speed Trains, and the warm and temperate weather the island regularly has. I've arrived at Elephant Valley to take in the cuisine and the beautiful environment the island has to offer. Seeing how much the South Newlandians love the environment, it reminds me very much of back home.

Upon arriving at Elephant Valley, you can see people going about their day as normal, usually in groups with their family or friends. There are murals of the various animals that people love in the country, especially the Elephants. In fact, the Elephant is the national animal of the country, and it is very much protected in this island. Harming any of them can land you in very serious trouble. I decide to stop by a restaurant by the name of The Pasta Boulevard, where I decide to have their specialty dish: Ragù alla bolognese. It's a slowly cooked meat-based sauce, and its preparation involves several techniques. It's ingredients include a characteristic soffritto of onion, celery and carrot, different types of minced or finely chopped beef, often alongside small amounts of fatty pork. White wine, milk, and a small amount of tomato paste or tomatoes are added. *Takes bite and slurp* Mmmmm it's amazing! God this is great! The meat is savory and seasoned just right, with the tomato-y flavor to the sauce. The celery and carrot are nice to chew on, with the carrot being soft while the celery is a bit soften but has a nice crunch to it. With the pasta, it's soft to chew and slurp on, which makes it all the best. Boy, this is some great pasta, I've really enjoyed it.

Afterwards, I go about the city seeing all the nice buildings, partaking in a tour around a museum highlighting the major points of South Newlandian history, and I take the time to take pictures of and pose with a massive elephant statue painted with the colors of South Newlandia. I even took the time to go to the outskirts of the town to give a hand at feeding an elephant some peanuts. *Feeds penuts* Man, they're enjoying those peanuts a lot. *Pets and rubs snout* Very gentle animal here, it's nice to be up close and personal with one.

The next day over, I take a boat to New Colk, a small city on an island off the coast of the main island. Here, I take in the stunning beaches with the clear waters, enjoy a nice swim in them, and just marvel at the hard work the South Newlandians have done to protect these kinds of environments. I decide to stop by a local restaurant, The Tropical Harvest, where I'm in the mood to have their special of the day: Gratin Dauphinois. A Franc dish of sliced potatoes baked in milk or cream, using the gratin technique, with this variant having ham in it. *Takes bite* Mmmmm, it's so good and soft! The potatoes just melt easily with each bite and it has a hearty taste to it. The cheese just melts easily and has this gooey and creamy texture to it when you bite and eat it. The ham is salty and savory, adds a great mix of the cheese and potatoes. I also spend my meal helping myself to a bottle of Omersk beer, a beer coming from Grearish Influence in these parts, which I had to purchase a nice set with a small cooler prior to going on the plane, due to alcohol being illegal to purchase in South Newlandia, although they do permit people to bring it in to the country (this does earn people giving a weird look, and some even tried to get me help for it, despite my chargin).

Once back to the main island, I take a high-speed train to Newport, where once off, I marvel at the different cultures here from the immigrant groups that reside here. As a last meal, I decide to order from a local bakery, Solo Mio, and I decide to have their specialty: Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte. It's a chocolate sponge cake with a rich cherry filling. *Takes bite* Mmmmm, so sinfully delicious... God, it's so sweet. The chocolate is very sweet and nice, each bite is soft and spongy that melts in your mouth and the cherries have a nice taste to it. The whipped cream also is soft and delicious to eat. All in all, this is a phenomenal desert to eat.

After getting souvenirs and taking a train back, I'll admit I've had much fun being in South Newlandia. The people are very friendly and kind, very passionate about animals and the environment, and they have a beautiful group of islands to be proud of. The animals are beautiful and fascinating, the environment is stunning and it's just a great place to visit.

South Newlandia, always keep your country looking beautiful and stunning. You got something special to cherish and enjoy.
