Welcome to Baggieland

Baggieland is a tropical island nation with a plethora of sun-kissed beaches lined with majestic palms. There are plenty of water sports to enjoy such as surfing, snorkelling and scuba diving on pristine coral reefs, together with a vibrant and exciting nightlife. Visitors can also venture into the unspoiled wilderness to experience jungle trekking, white water rafting and mountain climbing in this nation that has it all.

There are four main cities:

Hawthorn is the capital and by far the largest city. It has the nation’s sole airport, which serves international flights only. It surrounds Lake Throstle, which actually isn’t a lake, but an inland sea.

Albion has Baggieland’s only deep-water port and is the centre of all international trade, as well as being home to the Baggielandian Royal Navy. It is an industrial city and the only one without a beach, so most tourists avoid it.

Stoney Lane and the nearby Ark Island have the best snorkelling and scuba diving spots.

Bunn’s Field has the best surfing beaches and there are also good snorkelling and scuba diving locations around Birches Island.

There are three smaller populated areas in the Three Degrees region:

Regis Island, Batson Island and Cunningham Island. These islands have good surfing, snorkelling and scuba diving as well, but they are best known by scuba divers for the abundance of ship wrecks.

There are no cars in Baggieland, but there is a very efficient public transportation system. There are trams within cities, trains between cities and ferries to the islands. All of which run every few minutes from early in the morning until late at night. The longest route, Cunningham Island to Ark Island, takes no more than five hours.

All Baggies are sport crazy, the nation comes to a standstill every time a game is being played. The players that make it to the top of their game are treated as gods.

Are you wondering why there are so many ship wrecks in the Three Degrees Region? There is a rogue submarine HMS Onslaught that operates in this area. They approach the ferries looking for booty and often sink the ships if they’re not satisfied with the takings (they always allow the passengers and crew into the lifeboats first – no one’s been lost – yet). If you should find yourself in this situation, well… you’re on your own.
Danger rating: 5/10. They might be satisfied with their booty.

As Baggieland has an equatorial climate, there are sharks in the seas off the coast, but no shark nets. If you should find yourself up against a tiger shark while enjoying the beach life, well… you’re on your own.
Danger rating: 1/10. Shark attacks are infrequent and rarely fatal. Shark diving tours are available.

As in any country, there are some social 'Dos and Don'ts'. Here's a couple to make sure your stay in Baggieland doesn't cause any cultural misunderstandings:

Squad for Rugby World Cup Announced
Union Chief Hails 'Watershed Moment' for the Sport

Finally the second most popular sport in Elmyia looks to get some attention as a representative national side make their way to Baggieland to compete for the first time.

Rugby has consistently played second fiddle to football in Elmyia, consistently held back by the continuing enforcement of amateurism, the loss of young talent and a lack of suitable playing services in a nation where fields of play often turn to dust.

Chief of the Elmyian Rugby Federation Derick Scot has hailed this tournament as a potential 'watershed moment' for the sport as it attempts to break into the nations consciousness. The team have been put under the care of Simon Jerricks, widely hailed as the best in the nation, and someone who had seen both the Anglo XV and the Mosfleet Representative XV to various different domestic honours.

Elmyian rugby's season domestically has been dominated for a long time by the amateur club game, with separate leagues for the cities of Mosfleet, Beaucester, and a couple of county leagues outside considered on a similar level. The level of these has never been particularly high, and the cream of the crop only seemingly test themselves out in the 'test' games at the end of the season, where representative sides of the English, Italian and Greek speaking communities take each other on, and representative teams from Mosfleet and Beaucester face off the Elmyian Shield.

Elmyian rugby has, by international standards, seen less focus on the physical side of the game, with most teams being comparably light weight. Given its struggle for popularity against the dominant football there have also been efforts to follow a more entertaining game. Rarely ones to please the purists, Elmyian rugby sees plenty of running at back lines, jinks and footwork to trick opponents, rather than using the forward line to good effect. Jerricks has stated he hopes to ensure this provides plenty of entertainment, and shows no sign of hoping to tighten their game up, playing instead to their strengths.

Whilst the side might be considered lightweight and unlikely to go too far, there is a sprinkling of genuine quality in the team. Edward Stanley at prop provides some of the only genuine physicality in the team, without him they might find themselves overwhelmed in the scrum, he's also know for having a slightly more rounded game than some of the more specialist props. Joan Tanner, at scrum-half, meanwhile is the one player of genuine international quality. She can do everything expected of an exciting and modern scrum-half, adept at kicking, a deceptively good runner and with a shrewd eye for a good pass. Other than this, some on the forward line offer moments of brilliance, Catia Gavalas at winger, in particular, produces some spectacular runs through the opponents line.

Elmyia face some tough competition in their group, they've drawn number 1 seed, reigning champions and hosts, Baggieland, and have only one other unranked nation to face in their group. The campaign opens at the end of the week as they face Kriegiersien in the opening fixture, a team that failed to get out of their group last time. This considered, Elmyia will be hoping to get their tournament off to a flying start.

Rugby is the third most popular sport in Elejamie, behind ice hockey and football. While rugby league has a small but loyal fanbase and the ERC Sevens (held before the start of the ERC season) is a massive success, it's rugby union that reigns supreme in Elejamie. With the ERC being very successful since its inaugural season in 1978/79, the ERC Grand Final being one of the most-watched sporting events in the country and the Elejamian Universities XV (an all-star team made up of the best players from universities around the country) having an annual tour that tends to sell very well, as well as a plethora of talent over the years, it's safe to say that rugby union will be popular in Elejamie for years to come.

The last competition was their first one back after their (IC although with a small hint of OOC) boycott of the 31st Rugby World Cup. Held in Copper Cuprum, they were hoping that they wouldn't have missed a beat and would make it through to the elimination stage with little to no problems. Oh the joys of overconfidence. While they got an easy 33-0 shut-out against Hannasea, they would stumble against Nova Anglicana who thrashed them 37-19. Fortunately a 40-20 win over Lochario helped them make it out of the group stage with a second place finish. Unfortunately, a skirmish against Ko-oren saw them dip-out in the Round of 16 with a 23-6 loss to the Butterflies. Pablo Cartagena ended up stepping down as head coach with his assistant Robert Mackey acting in the interim until a successor is found or he takes the top job. Oh, and Baggieland are not only the reigning champions thanks to their 19-0 win over Abanhfleft in the finals of the last tourney but also they're hosting this one, so a genuine double congrats to them.

RUWC - Ko-orenite National Team - The Dragonflies

Backs
The fullback is tremendously important to the Ko-orenite game. Having looked at (and suffered at the hand of) the Darmeni two-fullback system, we employ that in troublesome times as well. The new generation is here - for some positions - but not for the fullbacks. Scenay is still the golden standard of what a player at this position should do, even if he's involved in passing at Idyllwild a bit more than, say Bilaranora's defensive role in Tarrashall.

The new generation is here at the winger position. Warmeling has been part of the national team for a while, but Howbrick and yChonpad are new, but it has to be said that Warmeling/Finnerty is a stronger combo than the youngsters on the other side. The centres are also new, with yCilionmac a fantastic talent who keeps playing for his hometown Bears. Airthorn is a similarly fantastic talent, at the Swans, with Morimoto (who transitioned over from League at a young age) not far behind.

Halves
Vasseur is here for another year as our friendly neighbourhood scrum half. While Magrath is the more tactical option, Vasseur has rapport with nearly all teammates and has a crafty outlook on the game, sometimes diving below defenders for a few metres - or across the try line if the defence is napping. We have a slight revolution at the flyhalf positions, with Whithingham selected for another year at the position, but potentially on the bench behind Whitebuck, a southwestern talent who stormed on the scene from the youths of the region of Eleanor. We expect plenty of Whithingham and his experience over Whitebuck and his energy for now, though.

Forwards
At number eight: the same names as always. Connor and yAigaethol are to play at the flanker positions. Moshindi is the buffer option, Wilkinson the more attacking one, but the former duo are the more balanced option for our defensive team. Connor's knack for being in the right place at the right time to deceive the opponents and create scoring options for his teammates is not to be understated.

The locks are different, with yMhalmawm retaining his spot, but that's it. For some reason, the Mawr players excel here, with yEoganmac as the debatable first option - who has the muscle, but does he have the brain? - and yDdwffrell behind him as the sensible player. Arzehnra is a rare Gehrennan to play the game (and not opt for gridiron) and he's got the brain, but does he also have the muscle? Again, he can create a lot of chances and has a better view for space than most.

Then for props, there's Winterlas, with a unique skillset (have you noticed that our game is all about kicking yet) and Cheltell as a more typical player. Conapple and Holden were here for the last RUWC, so we know they're good. Rougeau is the perfect player at his position (hooker).

It's the era of new, exciting talent, and the stars of Airthorn, Rougeau, yAigaethol, Chipway, Farrell, and yCilionmac might shine brighter than any player who came before. Of the 'veterans', Scenay, Finnerty, and yPheffchawll are the biggest names.

Trivia
At home, Ko-oren will wear a mainly green jersey with blue and yellow trim. As an away jersey (and to avoid colour clashes), there's stories of a white jersey with green and blue trim lying somewhere in a supply closet, but we're sure the staff manages to find them in time.

COMMONWEALTH OF BAKER PARK
RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION

The Commonwealth of Baker Park Rugby Union was founded in February 1954; it consolidated the governing authority that individual state unions held over sport since the turn of the century.

Currently, the CRU organizes the country's domestic club national championship, the Montieth Shield, as well as the Westerly Challenge Cup, open to all professional and amateur clubs.

Rugby was popular in the first decade after the founding of the Commonwealth; as American-style football grew in participation, rugby clubs saw a decrease in the number of registered players at established clubs. Into the 1920's, rugby saw their decreasing numbers level off and by 1931 there was a renewed interest in the game in certain areas of the country. Towns and boroughs with significant Welsh and Scottish populations led the way as rugby made inroads on the number of young men who took up active sports club memberships. The Ezra Rugby Football Union (ERFU) and the Endover Rugby Union (ERU) had far more clubs competing than their counterparts in the Baker Park Rugby Federation (BPRF), Osheana Ruby Union (ORU), and the Rugby Union of Lynchana, Midalia and St Leon (RULMS); the first Challenge Cup was organized by the ERFU in 1929, inviting any club in the Commonwealth playing the union code to participate. Endborough City RFC won the inaugural trophy, and over the next 19 editions from 1930-53, Ezran or Endoveran clubs were champions on 14 occasions.

There had never been a unified convention of the various state bodies until Sylvester Montieth, Chief Secretary of the ERFU, proposed a meeting in the winter of 1953. He wanted to find some common ground between the state organizations in order to work on increasing participation and a possible fully national body to help with technical development of players. His proposal for the formation of a Union made up of all the state level competitions was unanimously approved at the Frazier House Hotel in Hamilton, which marked the beginning of the CRU.

The national club championship was established in 1956 with a structure of two 8 team divisions with promotion and relegation playoffs, 3 years later it was expanded to 10 teams each; it was known as the Frazier Shield until 1970, when it was renamed for Sylvester Montieth, who had been elected the first Chairman of the CRU and served until 1960.

The influence that the ERFU had over the sport even after the formation of the CRU can still be seen today; the national team's shirts are Navy Blue & Gray hoops, which were adapted from the shirts worn by Ezra's most successful club, Middletown Old Boys (now Middletown RFC), originally made up of ex-students from the University of Ezra branch, whose colors were also the same; the legend of the university's adopting the colors is rooted in the story that quite a few men who had been members of the Army regiment also known The Blues & Grays were among the earliest enrolled students at UE/Middletown.

Barnitz Stadium in the city has hosted more international test rugby matches than any other ground in the country, and more recently the final day of competition for the first two Atlantian Oceania Rugby 7's Championships, which Baker Park claimed the title on both occasions (reflected by the orange & blue stars on the crest).

The basic design of the Baker Park jersey has remained consistent since the first international match played in 1957; the late 1980's & early 90's saw narrower hoops--four blue and three gray--but a return to the traditional pattern came in 1995. White shorts and blue & gray hooped socks have remained standard over the years, and an all-white change strip has also been the practice of the CRU (which is a nod to the "Ghost Whites" kit of the BP National Soccer Team) since the mid 1960's.

Due to administrative lacunas in the household of the Capnordic Rugby Federation, only a quickly-scribbled page with the fifteen starters was shared with the organisers, with a note jotted down that “there will be seven replacements as well, surely”. One of those latter, Alexander Flowers, has already been signalled in a jersey of New Eestiball, whilst reserve second row Maxence Renault currently resides in a Baggielandian jail - whilst already getting funny looks in an Italian fastfood restaurant, he bellowed over the national anthem and got into a fistfight. Up to manager Theodore Ringer to ensure there are still enough players to take on Arjunnagar in our opening game.

SO CLOSE AND YET SO FAR YET AGAIN

Hello guys, and welcome back to another edition of The Rugby Rundown with me, your gay Irishman Graham O'Doherty. Ah, the title says it all. Need I say more after that? Abanhfleft was on the edge of finally completing the rugby grand slam, one championship in each of the codes of sevens, league, and now union. And yet it was cruelly and painfully snatched from our grasp. Abanhfleft, the team who had scored in each and every single game in the 32nd Rugby Union World Cup before the grand final, had been shut out by the Throstles of Baggieland, who went on to claim the rugby union title by nineteen points to zip. To be fair, if another side other than Abanhfleft were to win the title, then I would certainly say that Baggieland would have been deserving of the honor. They fought long, they fought hard, and they knew what they were supposed to do. And though I may get crucified for stating something that might be a bit of an unpopular opinion, I will say that I believe that the lads might have thought that they had won the game before they had even played it. Yes, I said it. Abanhfleft were overconfident, and as you all well know by now, overconfidence is one of the cardinal sins of Fleftic sports. You never ever become overconfident if you are playing for Abanhfleft because it never ends well for us. It almost never ends well for anybody, but for us Flefts, it’s even more dangerous.

In a way, it was almost understandable why Abanhfleft would have become overconfident. How else would you feel if you made it all the way to the grand final of the Rugby Union World Cup having beaten the likes of Quebec and Shingoryeo and Kelssek? By the way, I’m only talking about two nations there, not three, wink wink. Anyway, imagine being able to beat the Grim Reapers and the Dragonflies on your way to your first ever Rugby Union World Cup grand final. Wouldn’t that put a spring in your step as well, fly you all the way to cloud nine? I know I would. And that’s why I feel like the Armored Revolutionaries did the same thing, and that was how Baggieland managed to take advantage of us and claim the right to be called the best rugby union side in the multiverse. And once again, I wouldn’t even deny them the honor. They’ve certainly deserved it.

Baggieland’s rise through the world stage has been nothing short of meteoric. After a debut campaign in the 29th Rugby Union World Cup in which they were predictably eliminated in the group stage, the Throstles defied all the odds and went all the way to the grand final of the 30th edition of the RUWC where they would unfortunately lose out to Lisander. And while Baggieland were unable to repeat that feat in the 31st RUWC, a third place finish is still nothing to scoff at, especially considering they beat the defending champs that time to claim that bronze medal. Now the Throstles have replicated that Cinderella run through the playoffs to set up a meeting with the Armored Revolutionaries of Abanhfleft, and after 80 minutes of hard battle, it was Baggieland who emerged with their hands on the Rugby Union World Cup.

You can’t even pin the blame on Baggieland doing the haka and intimidating the lads and using that as an excuse for us losing. Abanhfleft have been playing Copper Cuprum since time immemorial and have seen the Copperites’ chicken sacrifice ritual more times than anyone would care to count. Of course, some of the more squeamish fans might find the chicken sacrifice ritual disgusting, abhorrent even, and there have been numerous calls from animal rights groups for the Chiefdom to put a stop to this ritual, but Chief Deg has remained stubborn, citing the ritual’s “cultural significance” as the primary reason why he won’t ask the Copperite rugby union team to drop the chicken sacrifice. Yes, they’ve conceded ground by only performing a modified ritual involving a rubber chicken when they’re playing away from home, but when they’re playing in the Chiefdom, the chickens are very real and very bloody when they become headless.

What was the point that I was trying to make in the previous paragraph again? Oh, yes. Baggieland’s haka surely could not have intimidated Abanhfleft that much if we’re used to the even crazier and bloodier Copperite pre-game chicken sacrifice. Speaking of which, when Baggieland were presented with the chicken sacrifice, instead of being disgusted, their players actually expressed interest in turning the sacrificed chicken into a satay dish, or as they called it over there, sate. The Copperites, after getting over their initial surprise, agreed to the meal as well, and this had reportedly resulted in an uptick of chicken satay sales in Baggieland. And, having tasted some myself, I wouldn’t blame them. That chicken is, to quote a certain restaurant chain, finger licking good! They don’t pay me to advertise for them but if you’d like to drop a few nups in my bank account for it then you’re more than welcome to. That’s if you want to do it, of course, but…

Enough about the pre-game stuff though. On to the action itself. And right from the start, it was clear that Baggieland had the upper hand. Abanhfleft probed and probed, but they just couldn’t find a way through the Throstles’ lines. Whether this was part of the overconfidence that I had mentioned earlier or if Baggieland was just that defensively solid is perhaps up for debate, at least for some fans. But as for Baggieland themselves, they were able to dance in between our lines, and it finally bore fruit in the form of a David Davies try in the ninth minute, successfully converted by the indefatigable Vincent Tank. It would take some more time though before the Throstles broke through for a second time. This time it was Henry Blackstone who dropped a shoulder and thus dropped James Porterhouse at the same time for an uncontested run to the corner of the end zone. But because the try was scored at the corner, Tank couldn’t find the right angle for the conversion and thus missed it, but the score was still not a pretty sight for any supporter of the blue, orange, and green: 12-0.

No problem though, right? There was still 40 minutes to get back into the game and really make Baggieland fight for that trophy, right? Yeah, not really. The Armored Revolutionaries continued to play limpid rugger, and they just could not find a way through the Throstles’ lines. Baggieland continued to dominate in forays into the opponents' 22-meter line while Abanhfleft simply couldn't keep up. Peter Massingham would finally put us out of our misery with a try underneath the uprights despite the dogged efforts of Scott Butt and company to stop, and that was the story of how Baggieland won the 32nd Rugby Union World Cup by a score of 19-0. It's not the good ending that Fleftic fans would have expected, but Baggieland are deserving winners in my eyes. At least I'm not as mad at this final result and the winner of this world cup as I would have been had a team like Kelssek won the thing. Nope, I'm not still bitter about those guys beating us in the round of 16 of… what was it? RUWC 28? Something like that? Nope, I'm not still bitter about it. You are.

The smaller pie rugby world has won in the Quebecois sporting world has meant that the rugby, as a whole, has taken greater approaches to play professionally alongside other nations in the Quebecois Commonwealth, whose interest and financials allow for international travels. Most of the members of the Quebecois and the Acadianan national teams do play in the Quebecois Commonwealth Rugby SuperLeague, a 16-team league of four associations (Quebec and Shingoryeo, Quebecois Acadiana, Busoga Islands and Quebecois Sudafrique nations which have their own West Indies situation). Because of this, however, it takes greater efforts for the national team camps or schedules to be put together, and the team's cohesion will likely take years to develop over time.

Nobody knows how this group of party-loving scrubs, whose reputation at home and abroad aren't the most positive due to their well-deserved reputation, has ended up ranked sixth in the world. Really, I don't either and I have generated these bastards. Anyways, this is a much more experienced batch of Grim Reapers whose two quarterfinals appearances in last three World Cups are enough to suggest their rough placement in the world - great defensive side with likely floor of first-round playoff appearance and ceiling of semifinals, but most likely ending up in the Quarterfinals. A fairly predictable bunch as whole.

Fortunately what this team does carry is a solid blend of experience and youth - Rugby Quebec has done a good job lately in fostering younger talents through their system, with age-based sides being consistently tested out on IRSEA's Anaia City campus and whatnot, and this likely means that even without stars like Callum Wild Jr or Theopile Maurus, the team would not be able to feel as big of a gap. This cycle sees interesting additions, with a quartet of junior national teamers joining the 23-man squad. Out of them, Saudlane Tehindin and Naum Sahatciu are the ones to watch with former being a dual-national of Quebec and Ko-oren, the undisputed rugby powerhouse in all three codes, while Sahatciu, still in high school with his education taking place at the IRSEA and local high school, will be the youngest player to ever start for Grim Reapers' rugby side.

Blues & Grays return to XV World Cup wiser but younger

The CRU proclaimed themselves satisfied with the outcome of the Blues & Grays at Rugby World Cup 32, so Byron Robertson and Kyle Fleming will build upon the experience gained in Copper Cuprum with a roster that sees much of the same group that earned an impressive win over the hosts sandwiched in between two hard fought defensive battles that ended in defeat.

Fleming opted to fill in his reserve selections with a bit more forward heft, and will turn over a third of the starting lineup due to international retirements, as well as looking at an entirely different format for pool play.

There will be four groups consisting of seven nations, meaning depth will play a larger factor and give Baker Park more opportunities to utilize their strong play from the back.

Up front, Caleb Kohler will swap places with Brett Sipes at loose head, and Springfield Maroons hooker Gerald Rodgers will also backup Stuart Mann and Jack Barry while Ro Gardner will move to Number Eight to get both Edison Solomon and Peter Quinlan into the second row; Gardner will step in where Bobby Wasmund left off, possibly even as captain while Geoff Evers and Kevin Garcia will keep their spots at flanker, although Duane Burredge is one of the bruisers who will rotate along with Mark Jones, and let's not forget that Solomon is also a capable blind side option.

Neil Gerrard is the prospective starter at outside center, pushing Tim Knopper to the bench, although like the situation at scrum and fly half, don't be surprised to see mix & match combos; Kevin Carter and Jason Morgan remain at the top of their game, with Harris O'Neill and Lucas Odekume both coming off stellar Montieth Shield campaigns. Andy O'Boyle is the only other replacement as Luis Villanueva stepped aside at fullback, while Robin Napier and Alex Fields will flip their rotation at left wing.

The squad arrived in Albion on the east coast of Baggieland where they will make their base, playing the first four Group 4 matches at Waverly Oval, the 86,000 seat ground that is better known for the Aussie Rules code; the final two match days will see them move to Regis Island to the Maripasoula Stadium.

Head Coach Kyle Fleming discussed the changes that have come about since the last RWC and how the CRU are approaching their second appearance.
"We knew going in that a few guys were really only going to be one timers in the national team, and we operated on building out the squad with that in mind. We realized that we needed to make a huge improvement in the pack, hence the reason we've changed things around and brought in some added size. You always have to be on the lookout for players who are in form, and we feel as though Gerrard, Napier and Jones had excellent, consistent performances across the entirety of the (Monteith) Shield Season."

Asked about the group draw, Fleming chuckled ahead of his reply. "This is a very top heavy sport as the draw proved. We're in against the number 4, 6, 10 and 13th ranked sides, and that's not even the toughest lineup of seeds. We've got a chance to get off on the right foot as we've got the both unranked nations in our first two fixtures (Talannua & Godchouzetsu) then HUElavia who are the fourth seed. By the time we get around to Ko-oren and Quebec (& Shingoryeo) I want to have us at peak performance."

After all this time, it's high time the Rugby came back. The Union Jaguars of TJUN-ia were certainly grateful to be back at another RUWC, this time hosted by the defending world champions in Baggieland. Jacob Peterson and Wyn Gwyneth were certainly happy to be back, albeit a bit older due to the increasing powers of good old Father Time. Pretty soon, the old guard may have to step aside for the next generation, but that isn't in the immediate concern right now. That would be trying to get into another knockout stage in a RUWC...so let's get started, eh?

Our first opponents in this massive 7-team group stage would be Arjunnagar, a team ranked 36th in the world that sounded like a perfect team to try and tune ourselves up against before the tougher tasks ahead. Arjunnagar were certainly good enough to provide some pressure against us, and a penalty kick at that for 3 points, but we were just on a different postcode to them in enough aspects to make this one seem like one way traffic on Cooper's Field. Peter Mahinulani, Kennedy Vakatawa, Dan McCrawley and Zhivago Groenewald were the four try-scorers for today, with Jose Valbuena going 4/4 on conversions. 28-3 sounds like a meme, but it's still a great start all the same.

Next game is just...painful, or maybe one that will show where we stand amongst the rugby elite. What better litmus test than the Throstles themselves? Facing Baggieland on their turf sounds like a recipe for disaster, but who knows in a sport as complex and unpredictable as rugby. At least we will know where we stand, right? GO JAGS!

The start we all wanted with a 13-7 win over Lisander. Kind of a modern classic for the Ko-orenite national team, Lisander is always a good match to look forward to, be it in the groups or knockouts. If it's our opening game, even better: iron sharpens iron so it's the right wake-up call to get into another World Cup. The next game is against Quebec and Shingoryeo, which ranking-wise is an even bigger fixture, and after that we're up against Talannua, Godchouzetsu, Baker Park, HUElavia, and we end with a bye - so any knockout berth must be seized before then. HUElavia and Baker Park are the biggest teams from each of their pots, the rest are unranked. The entire group features only teams from the top half of their pots... and Ko-oren, who are currently sitting bottom of pot 1. We'll still take that over a spooky scary status in pot 2, but the differences are smaller than ever. Elejamie dipped to 12th as well, so the back-to-back-to-back final thing isn't reflected in the rankings anymore, and that opened up a place for the new top of the rugby union world to jump into: Baggieland, Kelssek, and Abanhfleft, with Nova Anglicana, Quebec and Shingoryeo, Quintessence of Dust, and Darmen completing the long list of contenders. It really feels like competitiveness and parity are back on the menu, because there's teams from pot 3 that induce equal parts of fear and respect.

The Dragonflies opened with a lot of energy, as you do. With a new-ish core, it was a mix of old and young that had to figure itself out before Lisander could be put under pressure. Constantly counting, the halves bided their time, having the forwards crash into the defence, drawing in tacklers to the ruck, hoping to put centres and wingers on 1-on-1s or 2-on-1s. Whitebuck spotted some opportunities and passed the ball out, to Howbrick - a 'new' to 'new' connection - but Howbrick was dragged into touch once and couldn't break the line on other occasions. It wasn't until Magrath came on for Vasseur and the threat of a well-placed kick was introduced that Lisander struggled to keep up. Magrath launched one or two over the defence for Warmeling and yCilionmac to chase, and that was enough to show how much variation the team can bring. Scoring followed in the second half: yCilionmac met a grubber kick for the 7-0 lead, Lisander answered with a try of their own, and two late penalties gave us the win.

A team still mostly leaning on the players they had last year and the years before, the Bears did add yCilionmac who instantly became the biggest name on the roster. With yDdwffrell, they have two great players, but the rest of the forward pack is too light for Penstead to bring pressure constantly. It's those two names who'll have to see this year through and hope that the team can bring in some additional talent next year - but the team has really lost the battle for signatures this year, especially compared to the Springlands/Domains/West Surbourneshire triangle of Aubury, Idyllwild, and Maynard.

Like last year, Tarrashall is found around the bottom of the previews. They have a much brighter outlook than Penstead though, getting more talents from 'the east' and carefully treading forward. The forward pack is unchanged, but Hodoshima and Gyuleo were added to the powerful back duo of Howbrick and Bilaranora. In addition, Boudreaux (added last year) has proven to be an upgrade. There's a future here, but other teams are just ahead. That said, they were rated 11th last year and finished 7th - they weren't far behind the rest and then and aren't today.

Locked in a battle with nearby Aubury and Idyllwild, Maynard has seemingly taken a step back. A 6th place finish last year, and while the team didn't sit still in the offseason, there were a lot of good players on offer and Maynard didn't land many of them. Whitebuck is the addition of a lifetime though, hopefully their starting fly half for the next decade and a half if they're lucky, and an elite talent to boot. Van der Heuvel, Barkmare, and Maurdhaundhen were all added in the last two years and have brought the competitiveness of the squad way up, so if they keep it up they'll be back to finals football soon.

Last year ended in disaster with an 11th place. The Eagles are a long way removed from competing with the top but they have the unofficial WSR championship in the bag - which is against Tarrashall. WSR rugby union is in a dire place alright. Now, they already had Whithingham, Carrington, and Burrula, and they added Ililey and Kenningnock to cover for the biggest gaps. The backs are in a genuinely good place, but the forwards are light.

Most rugby talent comes from the southwest, which isn't where Mayara is, but the club are a fantastic place for talent from the rest of the country to land. Warmeling is the big name there, a NT starter, with Holden attracted from Eaglebury in his youth as the next big name. Leauntherinthen is a way underrated fullback in a scene that loves its fullbacks. New addition Arzehnra is here to anchor the forwards, and Yukawa made the switch from League to play winger as athletically as we expect from League.

A solid club in the aforementioned triangle of Maynard-Idyllwild-Aubury, a triangle of rivalries that are worth watching once again. Like most clubs, the focus this year was in strengthening the backs, but Armkins might be the most important addition still.

Trying to push for a title for years, the Galaxy were 5th last year and honestly didn't do all that much in the offseason. Moshindi and Conapple are two big names to add, bolstering the forward pack and probably dominating that for most of the year, but few other positions panned out as well. Vasseur is an NTer, though, so the Galaxy will definitely win some games, especially if they can keep their opponents in the middle near the forwards.

Champions of last year, Mawrystwyth has defined the state of Mawr rugby and to an extent, set the pace for the entire country for a while. The situation at the top is competitive, with a few teams maxing out their budgets, and the Phoenix might fall all the way down to fifth. The best players have been there for a while and know the drill. Drystan yIoganmac is just 21, his older brother Ronan is 22, yGaegwlon is 20, and together they'll have to show the Phoenix are back at the top again. Other teams have completely covered the gaps at the bottom of the roster, but Mawrystwyth has kept on making their strengths even better.

Aubury's offseason wasn't one of finding stars: it was all about finding role players to completely mask any holes from their team last year (who were 10th). And by sighning Magbrier, Darkiths, Pellegrin, and Rodsea, those aren't big splashes or stars, they're just loads better than the previous player at their position, and for a small-ish price the Swans are contenders now. That wasn't all, they also put Airthorn, Cheltell, Kenningnock, and Falcroft in the starting XV. Arguably only Airthorn can come remotely close to the overall top of the country, but it's an interesting way of teambuilding nonetheless. The collective should be stronger here than anywhere.

Another young core here: Arrowick, Ager, Winterlas, Santizo, Angelley, Rodsea: all decent players. Finnerty remains the star on a team that will try to bring the ball out wide more than any other.

This window isn't close to shutting.

Dave Carrey's Quick Guide to the 33rd Rugby World Cup
Dave Carrey - Somewhere in Baggieland

Normally I would recap the events of the last tournament for the first paragraph of my round-up articles. Whether it be the ERC Sevens, the ERC proper, the Rugby World Cup. You name it. It's also something that seems to have spread to my fellow contributors like RubiFaman. However, I don't really want to talk that much about the last one. Partially because of how disappointing it was given that we were returning from that one edition boycott and there was a bit of hype going into it but also because we didn't really do much that I could remember. There was the 33-0 opening win against Hannasea, yes. But there was also the loss against Nova Anglicana which was inevitable given how well they were playing last time but, according to some people including a few of my DG collaborators, it should've been closer instead of the 37-19 result we actually got; that's how this sport goes so I wasn't that upset if you were wondering. At least there was the 40-20 win against Lochario to send us through to the next round to a grudge match against Ko-oren.

And I do mean "grudge". We played them for three finals in a row. The first was at the 27th RUWC in, well, Ko-oren where we managed to emerge the 7-3 victors. The second was a 9-0 win for the Dragonflies over in the Kelssek for the 28th edition. And, at the 29th one in Hutanjia, the Ko-orenites made it 14-8 to win their second consecutive cup. So with the idea of a rivalry brewing between the two teams, something that both teams might acknowledge but I haven't gotten a reply from either, you'd expect another close match full of high-octane excitement. I certainly did. Instead what we got was a dismal 23-6 loss that saw us lag behind in a lot of ways. It also saw Pablo Cartagena step down as head coach after so long, although whether he willingly stepped down because he said he would or fell on his sword to avoid a firing is still up in the air. Wow, I remembered quite a bit. Scratch what I said earlier.

Anyway, new competition. With the position of head coach still vacant heading into the competition, former assistant coach Robert Mackay had to step in to fill the void. While he has studied enough under Cartagena that he could take them a good distance, I don't think he would be a good fit for a full-time head coaching job here. Maybe something lower-league to try and boost his skills and then we'll see but for now I have some severe doubts. Other than that, it's almost the same line-up as last time, with the major difference being Paul Debenham's returned to his usual role as a starting kicker while Guinho's resumed his duties as a back-up scrum and fly-half. While hopefully there will be some new blood for the 34th competition, everyone taking part still had at least decent seasons so I can't fault them too much.

And where did I book tickets to? None other than Baggieland. Reigning world champions, current world #1s and now hosts of the 33rd edition. I've gone over the majority of the rules and regulations here, some of which make sense (like revering their Royal Family) and some don't (like only eating lasagna with a spoon), so I won't talk too much about it. I will give some props to their national team instead, who started as absolute minnows who finished second from last with a 2-0-2 record (which included a 23-0 loss to us) only to vastly improve and become a potential powerhouse if they aren't already, which you have to give them a round of applause for. They kind of in a tough group (alongside TJUN-ia, Kriegiersien and Nova Anglicana) but I doubt they'll have much trouble making it out.

So who's in our group? First up, we have the crew of the HMS Onslaught, a submarine that seems to frequently target ferries. I'm kind of surprised the Baggielandian Navy (if there is one, should've done some research beforehand) lets them live instead of trying to sink them. But maybe that's why they're playing rugby, either as pennance or as a punishment. Either way, they're new so a win will probably be the most likely option. By how much, I don't know. But what I do know is that, much like the North Alezian team at the AVBF Sevens many moons ago, they have an adorable cat mascot, this one being called Unsinkable Sam. Hopefully it'll be a good luck charm.

After that, we have the Natanians and Nosts. They're a team that needs no introduction, having played them a number of times in the past, so instead I will just concentrate on their performance from last time. Especially since it seems to be somewhat parallel to our run last time as well, only with a couple of numbers as well as the names of their opponents changed. They managed to get an amazing opening win in style thanks to a 37-3 demolition of Vdara. Then they got stomped by the Quintessence of Dust, 44-25. Then they avenged their defeat in a match that saw both sides' defences shut off a little bit thanks to a 42-24 win over New Zoigai. Overall they finished in second place with a 2-0-1 record, 10 points (two of which were try bonuses), a point differential of +33. However, they got absolutely destroyed by eventual winners Baggieland. How bad? 52-10 to the Throstles, which then became their new record. Ouch.

This is then followed by the Quintessence of Dust. Other than the aforementioned win against N&N, they also managed to bag a 31-10 win over New Zoigai. They also managed to get edged out 15-14 to Vdara, a team that would eventually finish last in their group. Another ouch. Fortunately they avenged their loss with a 23-14 win over Barunia. Unfortunately, they too fell to the Baggielandian might albeit with a much calmer score. 31-12. They're still in the top ten however, ranking in at #7, so they might be quite a tough opponent. If we do win then there's a good chance they'll get a losing bonus point to go with it. But I'm not ruling out a loss entirely.

Then it's the big one against Abanhfleft. Oh boy, this is going to be a tough one. In the last one, they grabbed an opening victory against Mapleford, 37-15. After that came a closer score but still a victory, 38-27 against the Licentian Isles. And, finally, they rounded things off with a 31-0 shut-out of StrayaRoos. Yes, they're the first team I'll be talking about this article who didn't have a 2-0-1 record. After that came a 24-7 win against Brookstation, a 17-9 win over Quebec and Shingoryeo and a 21-10 win over Ko-oren to make it to the finals. However, their amazing run of form stopped there when they were shut out by the Throstles in a 19-0 thriller. You can definitely see why this match will be an absolute nail-biter and why it'd be a good idea to just play defensively this match. Maybe get a try or two when we can but concentrate on not letting them score any. Which, given how offensively-minded these guys are, will be difficult.

We don't have that much time to rest and recover before we head into match day five against Acadiana. Fortunately they are an easier opponent so we can all collectively relax after the toughie against the Fleftics. They were in the last one, albeit under the name "Quebecois Acadania", and they weren't having a fun time. They got stomped in their opener against Darmen 38-7, although they managed to claw back with a hard-fought 41-30 win over Srednjaci which set up a do-or-die game against HUElavia. It ended up being "die" as they ended up losing 36-15 and were dumped out of the tournament. On the upside, at least it was a third place finish with five points so at least it didn't end up being a more humiliating experience for them.

And then, to round things off, we have Chromatika. The bad news is that everyone else will have one more game to play after this so even if we just manage to squeak ahead there's no guaranteeing we will make it through to the next round. The good news is that we have yet another easy game. Much like our opening opponents, they're new to the competition so this should theoretically be an easy match. I won't say it'll be a blow-out but we should be able to get a few tries here and there. If not, then it'll probably be really embarrassing.

So where do I think we'll end up? Second or third place, fourth worst case. Abanhfleft is too strong a side for us to vanquish barring a few minor miracles and, while we could stand a chance against the Natanians and Nosts as well as the Quintessence of Dust, there's no guarantee we'll be able to defeat both teams. At least the top four teams will be going through to the next round so, even if we completely mess up, we still have a chance of going through to the knock-out stages? No point in asking who'll be joining us because those three other teams I have mentioned in this paragraph are my picks to do just that. As for everyone in the other groups who'll be making it through, at least in my humble opinion? Kelssek, Darmen, the Licentian Isles and Hannasea from Group C; Ko-oren, Quebec and Shingoryeo, Lisander and perhaps Baker Park from Group D

Unfortunately, I don't have much time to add pictures or go into greater depth. A little bit of it was because I spent too much time relaxing, a little bit of it because I couldn't get a good internet signal and most of it was because I just couldn't really get myself in a writing mood. It explains the complete lack of pictures this time around, as well as why I concentrated on the last tournament instead of the last few. Hopefully when I do my round-up I will have a lot more time to get everything done. Now that's out of the way, I'm off to watch our opener. It should be a fun match or, at the very least, one that gives me plenty to talk about. Maybe you'll find it fun. Who knows. Dave out.
