Fates And Futures

Thread Staff: Forest State, Lunas Legion

IC Thread - Roster - Discord - Theme - Information Repository

“Some will see this as the apocalypse, while others as natural evolution.”

Will you save the world, or are you doomed by fate?

Heroes and villains clash daily, battling for control. Individuals with the power to destroy entire city blocks on a whim roam the Earth, both respected and feared by the common person. Some believe in using their abilities for altruistic purposes, to protect and help others, and generally to make the world a better place. Others are only out for themselves, battling each other and the authorities to make an illegal living, or to seek personal power for themselves and their allies. It’s a constant tug of war between the two sides, neither of them having a clear edge over the other. A deadly game that catches many ordinary people in the middle.

The Syndicate is the largest group of metahumans heroes ever formed, operating in nearly every country and fighting on the side of justice. Aside from a few organizations such as the United Nations, the Syndicate has more of a global reach than anyone, in any field. And even so, the world is threatened every year. Superpowered terrorism, aliens, criminal groups run by metahumans, and supernatural beasts are all threats that the Syndicate and other authorities need to contend with. The battle never stops or slows down, and even with the Syndicate's global reach, there's not enough bodies to win this fight in the long run.

The Futures Program is the Syndicate's way of looking forward and finding the next generation of heroes. The ones that will carry on the cause even as it drags on into the future. The brightest metahumans between the ages of eighteen and twenty four are recruited, with the goal of molding them and turning them into viable heroes. The Program isn't easy, by any means. Cadets, as they are known, conduct various activities in the field and are pitted against real threats. However, those who come out on the other side intact become the newest members of the Syndicate, defenders of Earth that are loved by millions.

You are one of the recruits in the Futures Program. Wherever you are originally from is now irrelevant. You've been assigned to the metahuman capital of the world, Santa Marina, Florida, where you will be trained in both controlling your powers and applying them in the field against criminals and any other threats that you come across. You will compete with both each other and your environment, and you will be pushed as far as your limits and even beyond that. Not everyone to join the Futures Program makes it out. But those who do? You'll move onto another challenge: protecting the world, even as the odds get tougher every year.

Some of the sights that are not that uncommon in 2018...

What Is This?

Welcome to Fates and Futures, the first thread in a new superhero universe that will hopefully be established over time. This is my last attempt at a P2TM RP in awhile, and I'm going back to my roots and to the successful threads I had last year for inspiration. The basic premise is that you play as a member of the Syndicate, the largest sanctioned organization of superheroes in the world. Specifically, you're a Cadet, or a member of the Futures Program. This program is meant to find the brightest young metahumans and make them viable members of the organization.

Your character will fight crime while living in Santa Marina, the birthplace of the Syndicate and a city with much metahuman history. At the same time, you'll learn from more experienced heroes. Everything will be taken care of for you. You'll live at Syndicate HQ, you'll receive a paycheck, and things such as food and clothing will be provided. You'll just have to focus on your activities as part of the Program, but that's easier said than done. After all, the Program expects you to do the work of a real hero, even with your minimal training at the start.

This RP also has a unique aspect in that events outside of the actual city and HQ have a major impact on the story. A feature unique to this thread is the crisis meter, which will be located below this post and displays the global crisis level based on recent events. What you do will impact the meter. Fail to stop something bad from happening, and it might go up. As the crisis meter rises, challenges will get tougher and things will escalate. If it goes lower, more peaceful times are ahead. If it hits 100, a cataclysm event will occur. There's also the perception meter, which measures the reputation of the Syndicate. If it gets too low, there will be consequences for the organization as a whole.

Sound interesting? Then check out the basic outline of the lore, below.

Santa Marina is the home of Syndicate HQ(West Entrance pictured, right) and has the highest amount of metahumans per capita in the world

The Story So Far

It's not required to remember everything detailed here, but it's worth reading as a general outline of the lore before making your character.

It's unsure exactly when metahumans appeared, but all historians agree that it was around the turn of the twentieth century. The late 1800s and the early 1900s are where most estimates fall, but early metahumans weren't known for spectacular feats or for playing a large role in society. Most were forced to hide their powers due to stigma. Many were accused of practicing withcraft and magic, and in many parts of the world, there was a moral panic against metahumans. As time passed, metahumans became more established in society and gained some of their own supporters, not just enemies. The source for metahuman powers is still debated. Some appear to be related to magical sources, while other powers seem to come from mutations.

The concept of superheroes didn't become a thing until the period after World War Two. The first "superheroes" were members of metahuman police units in large countries such as the United States and the Soviet Union, which were tied to the intelligence services of these countries. Eventually, vigilantism came into the equation as private citizens formed similar groups structured like the official government run ones. Over time, the government run teams were abolished and reestablished as more secretive organizations that are deeply tied to the intelligence community. Vigilante groups became the largest, and during the 1960s and 1970s, they became more organized and looked for sanctioning by their local governments.

The World Metahuman Council was formed in 1976 to advocate for metahuman rights, in association with the United Nations. Many countries lightened up with their poor treatment of these people, and while superpowered crime grew, the amount of hereos also rose as restrictions were removed. The true metahuman boom, however, did not come until the year 1999, when an unidentified object was seen by millions of people over the London metropolitan area. This was the first sighting of many, of the aliens known as the Outsiders. In 2001, an Outsider craft shot down in China revealed several truths about this species: that they are a humanoid race with pale blue skin and darker eyes, along with silvery hair and a more athletic physique than most humans. Their technology is more advanced than human inventions, but not understood even by the brightest of scientists. And their language is still being deciphered.

Living Outsiders have been sighted around the world, ever since the first sighting in 1999, as well as their starships. However, attempts to capture them have failed, and their intentions for humanity are unknown. What is known is that after the first Outsider sighting, and in cities that are passed by Outsider craft, the number of metahumans always rises sharply. The Outsiders may be responsible for the largest increase in metahuman population in recorded history, which began after 1999 and still continues today. Every world government wishes to get their hands on Outsider technology and an Outsider ship, but all Outsider built craft appear to be immune to human weaponry, and the only one to be captured is the one that still resides in China. The only individual Outsider to be captured, outside of China, was ambushed by United States intelligence agents and taken to a secret location near Washington.

After the boom in 1999, superpowered crime and terrorism became more of a problem. The entire world was threatened by the rise of some of the most powerful villains ever seen, culminating in 2009 with the rise of Despot. An extremely powerful telekinetic who could create hurricanes and wipe entire towns off of the map easily, Despot aimed to establish a world dictatorship on the backs of a circle of metahumans. His group became known as the Legends, and Despot recruited some of the best and most talented metahumans to help him with his goals. The Legends and the Syndicate clashed across Africa, the Middle East, and eventually Europe, with the final battle taking place in southern Spain and causing heavy damage to the city of Barcelona. Team Diamond and the other well known teams of the Syndicate converged on the city, engaging in one more costly fight that killed Despot and scattered the Legends into different groups.

After the fall of the Legends in 2011, many of the former members went to form their own groups with various agendas ranging from money to power. The Syndicate was stretched thinner than ever dealing with this, and crime rates rose around the world as warlordism also increased due to metahumans. Today, the situation is stable, but deteriorating as the global number of villains rise and the number of heroes doesn't increase quickly enough to keep the pace. Whether things improve or get worse in future years, causing another possibly world ending event to occur, remains to be seen.

At the same time, other organizations exist and present various threat levels to the Syndicate and society as a whole. The Order of the Arcane exists in the shadows and deal with magic, summoning dangerous beasts to the Earth despite existing in small numbers. The Watchers grant powers to others, but not much is known about them, and the group itself doesn't exist on any specific record. As the number of metahumans grows, more groups will surely develop over time.

After Africa and the Middle East were heavily damaged by the rise and fall of the Legends, metahuman scientists helped governments create anti-metahuman police equipment and many countries became more restrictive.

Character Guide

Most types of characters are acceptable in Heroes & Legends, there's just some important things to note. Some powers are completely banned from the RP for balancing reasons, and other ones are soft banned and require prior approval from the OP before use. The hard banned powers are invincibility, super speed that has a top speed of higher than seventy five miles per hour, time travel, and time stopping abilities. Restricted but not banned abilities are ones that revolve around summoning, hacking, regeneration, and any kind of mind control. These abilities aren't banned, but they need to be discussed with the thread staff first to ensure they aren't game breaking and that they don't allow great results with minimal effort.

Characters that are non human fall under this category, too. There is already an established lore for most types of non humans, and characters must follow this lore if you decide to use a non human race. Demons, for example, would likely be rejected because of the nature of demons in this universe. Furries are explicitly banned. Most sources for powers, however, should be fine, whether they are genetic, magical, or something different. Heavily derivative characters may also be rejected. For example, someone may want to play the Joker. Instead of taking the Joker's traits and making an original character, they make a character that's an obvious knockoff of the Joker. This character probably wouldn't be accepted.

Flaws should also be incorporated into character building. This is not an RP where you are meant to play a 100% competent character who rarely experiences struggle or is challenged during missions in the field. A flaw is defined here as something that actually affects your character. Making a very powerful character and only giving them a weird personality quirk as a flaw, for example, won't be accepted. A more balanced character might have the same ability, but with a practical built in way that it can be countered. Most characters who are rejected because of their powers will be rejected because they lack sufficient weaknesses that would impact them in an important situation.

Lastly, try to avoid making your character an idiot. Yes, you're playing as a young adult that isn't going to have all the answers, but there's a difference between being realistically naive or just not being that smart, and actually being an idiot. While you are here to be trained, your character should have at least some idea of what they're getting into by joining the Syndicate. They don't just pull in random people off the street. Additionally, running into a group of enemies without paying attention to who you're fighting and making a plan is a quick way to get killed. Always keep in mind that you aren't immortal, and that plot armor doesn't exist.

  • Final decisions from the OP/thread staff are final. This shouldn't have to be said, but things such as character deaths, decisions in the plot, and which powers are allowed into the RP cannot be appealed. You can try to make your case, but dragging it on after the decision has already been made doesn't help anyone. The thread runs smoother if this rule is followed, also.
  • Posts are expected to be of decent quality. They don't have to be very long or anything, but the minimum should be a paragraph or two. If you're having trouble adding more substance to your post, collaborate with someone else and write a post together. Or if you want to RP a quick scene using one liners, use the #casual-rp channel on the Discord server.
  • Discord isn't required, but it's preferred if you use it, at least for missions. During missions the bulk of the planning happens on Discord and sometimes things don't reach the OOC thread.
  • This has been said earlier, but just to restate it, there isn't plot armor in this RP. Consequences for actions will happen, and being a player character doesn't grant someone immunity from harm or death. Make smart decisions and plan with others, though, and you should be able to stay out of bad situations. Most casualties come from rushing in without talking about it. There's a lot of metahumans and others in this universe who are much stronger than you, remember that.
  • Inactivity is a reason to have your characters bypassed and/or moved so the plot can continue. Try to avoid starting interactions before going inactive, leaving other players' characters tied to yours.
  • The thread staff should be consulted BEFORE producing content like NPCs, factions, etc, that change the already existing canon.
  • Banned Players
    • Sky, Wysten

Here, you can find all the lore related to the main plot, and things that have been established as important parts of the canon.

Characters

Headmaster | Amanda Marin / Vesta: The leader of the Futures Program already has significant experience and is well qualified, being a member of the famous Marin family and being the former leader of the Capital Team. At the peak of her career as a hero, Marin went toe to toe with some of the top villains in the world, with lunar based powers and a specialty in artificially enhanced speed and agility. However, she was wounded in rural Quebec while investigating an Order of the Arcane cell. After being stabbed all the way through her body, Amanda found herself with a strange demonic infection and was forced out of action permanently, resigning from the Capital Team two years later after a period of inaction. The Syndicate was not willing to throw out her expertise, however, and she was transferred to Santa Marina to join the Futures Program as its director.

Head Combat Instructor | Ionie Shaw / Soulja: Born into the worst part of Kingston, Ionie Shaw knows a bit about fighting, with or without powers. She may be a hero right now, but she was in a gang growing up and has done some things that she would like to leave in the past. Her powers turned out to be her escape from a life of madness on the streets, and Ionie can manipulate metal or magnetism at a high level. Her ability is strong enough to tear a building apart, or send concrete flying at someone by manipulating the metal bars inside. Without powers, however, she’s an expert martial artist and a capable gunfighter. As someone that doesn’t come from much, she has an aggressive work ethic and gets annoyed with students who don’t want to dedicate themselves to the Program or put in work in training. She does want the best for everyone, though.

Head Engineer | Troy Cavaco / Grease: One of the top scientific minds in Brazil, Cavaco has a more subtle power that comes in the form of an innate understanding of machines. Generally, the ability applies to things with moving parts. Long story short, Cavaco has always been able to take these things apart and put them back together easily, figuring out how to improve them along the way. His expertise isn’t in one specific area, other than mechanical items. He’s created valuable anti metahuman weapons and sold them to defense companies, helped in the process of designing new nuclear power plants in his home country, and created advanced armor for various countries to use in the anti metahuman units of their police forces. With Cavaco stationed in Santa Marina and working with the Syndicate these days, the Cadets of the Futures Program now fall under his list of clients.

Special Instructor | Zara Nakano / Omen: Zara isn't someone that you would expect to be a hero at all, coming from a Yakuza background and originally making a name for completely killing off the crime family that ambushed and killed her own, but she somehow managed to make it all the way to the Council of Ten after taking one of the hardest and most dangerous routes to getting powers. Zara isn't really a traditional hero at all and operates as an assassin that enforces her own ideals of justice, while very rarely bowing to authorities. It's been said that she was put on the Council of Ten not for her accomplishments, but because her ability to regenerate rather than dying scares the existing members, along with her bad attitude. That attitude, though, doesn't change that Zara is highly competent in the field and therefore is one of the better choices to take students out on missions.

Administrator | Axl: Santa Marina is home to some of the more cutting edge technology in possession of the Syndicate, because of the city hosting the Syndicate headquarters. One of those pieces of technology is Axl, an experimental artificial intelligence designed by about a dozen of the smartest metahuman scientists in the world. Axl is limited to ensure that problems don’t occur, but still, the technology is groundbreaking and Axl is being used as an administrative system at Syndicate HQ. Axl is responsible for running some of the defense systems at the headquarters, updating schedules for both the heroes stationed at the HQ and for the Futures Program, and monitoring the cameras throughout the building. Additionally, the AI has been trained in human speech patterns and is capable of discussing these things with the inhabitants of the building.

Tactics Instructor | Griffin O’Kelly / Bedlam: The strange thing about Bedlam is that nobody actually knows what his power is. At least, nobody outside of Team Diamond knows. Bedlam isn’t one of Diamond’s hard hitters but is present in every battle, typically using a pair of mechanical fists in combat. Outside of the battlefield, however, Bedlam is known as quite a smart thinker and tactician, who understands people well and understands squad level tactics better. As part of a team that is already stationed in Santa Marina, Bedlam was announced as one of the instructors for the program because of this expertise in tactics, strategy, and effective use of personnel.

Head Doctor | Vivian Shaw / Lioness: The youngest lead member of the staff and the daughter of Ionie Shaw, Vivian spent the early part of her life in Kingston and experienced some of the same things as her mother. She has a healing touch and was in the metaphorical trenches of Jamaican gang warfare, using her abilities to save as many of the people that she grew up around as possible. Of course, this wasn’t popular with everyone, and Viv was shot at herself despite taking a mostly neutral stance. Eventually, she traveled to the United States to live with her mother in Santa Marina, politicking her way into getting a position where she would be one of the main doctors in the infirmary, using her ability to heal those returning from missions. However, she still doesn’t know what she wants to do with her life, and is somewhat apathetic towards most things.
Alpha / Lilian Harel: The leader and the founder of the Riot, Lilian Harel didn’t have powers for her entire life. She was always a highly opinionated girl growing up, and sometimes she was an outsider because of it. She stood up for metahumans whenever she could, even though she wasn’t one of them. Not that they were too poorly treated in London, but no matter the location, there were still a few people in a vocal minority that dislike metahumans. However, Lilian drifted into a depression when she reached college, and she was at a crossroads in deciding what to do with her life. It was at that point that the Watchers appeared to her, granting her a power and commanding her to be a “leader for the broken”. She set out to put together a group of metahumans who would team up with her and do something about their mutual distaste for society. She wanted to burn it down, really, partly a result of her own upbringing and a life that revolved around chasing what society wanted rather than what she wanted. The Riot was born, and with the power to influence others by looking into their eyes, Lilian became their brave leader. How she’ll fare over time despite her own personal problems remains to be seen.

Sol / Petr Holstrom: It’s known that most members of the Riot have very public and hard to hide powers, and that’s shown off the most in Sol, whose entire body glows. His head, especially, is very bright and can light up a room in the dark. This is because of his power. Sol is basically a miniature sun and can channel this solar energy into concentrated beams or into larger shapes. This energy can burn through most material and vaporize a human, and Sol is capable of both precise strikes and wider ones that vaporize anything in the area around him, friendly or enemy. Organizationally, Sol is the right hand man of Alpha and often manages the technical side of carrying out her orders from the top. It makes sense, considering Sol was a Norwegian businessman in the oil industry before developing powers later compared to others.

Mori: The demon known as Mori is the hardest hitter and the hardest to kill in the Riot. Just winning her loyalty was a major accomplishment for the young Riot group, which at the time had only recently started. The Riot used internet rumors to track down the sightings of a demon, eventually finding Mori in northern Scotland, where she had cleared out a camp of demon hunters. The Riot found Mori feasting on the remains of her enemies, but Alpha was able to influence her and tame her to an extent. Over time, she would become more human, acting more like a normal human girl, wearing human clothes and eating human food. However, in battle, she reverts back to a feral state and inflates to ten feet tall. As a demon, Mori cannot be hurt by physical attacks. Magic attacks are needed to deal with her, making her the most dangerous member of the Riot’s lineup. She’s even a danger to her own team, with Alpha sometimes losing control of her and clashing with her verbally and physically, despite their very close relationship.

Liu Ying: From Shenzhen originally, Liu was forcefully abducted at the age of 11 and taken to Laos. As it turns out, she was headed to a Nova School, an institution creating metahuman mercenaries from the technology left behind by the Supernova Program of the USSR. Upon her arrival, Liu and a number of others were implanted with Nova parasites, which would painfully bond with her body. Only about forty percent of people who take the parasites survive the process long enough to receive powers. Liu was set to die from the parasitic fever, and by all accounts, she should have died from it, but after she was cast out onto the street to save resources, she was picked up by another mercenary company that gave her something in exchange for her loyalty: a suit of armor that counteracts the effects of the poison, keeping her alive as long as she isn’t removed from it for long. After her contract was up, she met the Riot almost exactly on her 22nd birthday and was convinced by Alpha to join up with them. However, she has no idea how long her suit will last, and isn’t sure 100% about how it works… Still, her armor is mostly bulletproof and she has vastly increased strength, durability, and movement because of her parasites.

Azdaja / Edin Salkic: The Bosnian War was a conflict that had the attention of the entire world, and Edin Salkic was on the front lines on the Bosnian side. Salkic was a part of the normal Bosnian military at first, and was a relatively regular person at the time, but soon volunteered for a special program that developed before the war. Salkic was changed into a powerful metahuman, a beast of a man capable of taking gunfire and explosions without dying, and dealing heavy damage in close quarters. Of course, the effects were stronger psychologically than they were physically when it came to acting in the field, but Salkic was still sent to the frontlines of the Bosnian War and caused havoc for the Serbian lines, igniting large retreats at times. However, he never gained personal fame, as there was nothing setting him apart from the others in the program. His life was aimless after the war, but a visit from the Riot and Alpha soon gave him a new purpose, many years after the war ended.

Darrell Revie / Magma: The first member to join the Riot was Alpha’s countryman, who was already involved in some of the same scenes as her. If Alpha is the false activist on the team, the one who joins a movement for selfish reasons and doesn’t really stand for it, Darrell is the truest one. Darrell was involved with the anarchist scene since before his powers showed up, but when they did, he begun associating with other dissident metahumans, too. And his power, it turned out to be quite useful under the right circumstances. Darrell can superheat rock and metal and turn it into magma, and then control the liquid. Alpha, who was already a college friend of his, noticed this and made him the first member of the Riot. And ever since then, he hasn’t looked back.
Stephen Tumicelli / War: A veteran of Operation Desert Storm, war has been around Stephen Tumicelli’s life for awhile. He fought bravely on the Persian Gulf and did just about everything that a soldier could be asked to do. However, when the war was over and Tumicelli attempted to move to a safer career path that would allow him to have a family, he didn’t have the same fates. He had a hard time getting and keeping employment, and ended up on the streets, partly because of the effects that the war had on him. He was left going from city to city and looking for work in each place, not finding much help from the government either when it came to dealing with his problems. The process made Tumicelli cynical about society as a whole, after society’s failure to repay him and others for their work in a far away war. He happened to be settled in Oklahoma when the 2008 financial crash happened, and that was one of the leading events in forming the Horsemen. In 2009, the Watchers showed up and gave Tumicelli a chance to exert revenge. Which of course, he took. War has the heaviest offensive capabilities in the Horsemen, with powerful energy based attacks that have both high range and high accuracy.

Qamar Al-Amin / Famine:
The only non American member of the Horsemen is Qamar Al-Amin, who was born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Despite being in a big city, there weren’t many things that Al-Amin found as potential options to make a career out of. Soldiering was the easiest way to make a decent life at this point, and so Al-Amin joined the Saudi military and made it through training successfully. However, living in Saudi Arabia as an atheist is hard. Being in the military as a closeted atheist is even harder. It took its toll on Al-Amin, turning him mentally against the country that he had sworn to protect. Eventually, his cynicism spread and affected his perception of society as a whole, bringing him to a revelation: that so many of the systems of the world, from the financial ones to the religious ones, were only meant to hold people down. Al-Amin found himself in a rich country, and even in the military, the wealth didn’t reach him. Furthermore, religion was used to keep control of the country and prevent people like him from speaking out. In 2009, the Watchers gave him a chance to change that fate. They offered him powers to drain all of the living things in a wide area, especially the plant life and natural foods. He would take these powers and adopt the title of Famine, becoming the second member of the Horsemen.

Christian Murray / Pestilence: Pestilence is the first half of the pair of Horsemen members that knew each other before their transformation from ordinary people into one of the most feared teams of villains around. Pestilence and Death worked at the same bank before the financial crash, and were friends at the time, but they both lost everything as the banks were left reeling by the market. After all, it wasn’t just the consumers that were affected, but some of the people within the banks. Feeling betrayed by the system, Murray swore to do something about it. It was only about a year later when the Watchers showed up, granting him the power to both corrode objects and create deadly infectious diseases. These diseases can be controlled by Murray himself, allowing him to target specific areas and attack silently, without the need to fight at all. In appearance, he’s the most ghastly of the Horsemen, as a near zombie with exposed ribs and organs as well as green, torn skin.

Victor Adams / Death:
The unofficial leader of the Horsemen is the largest of them, standing at just over seven feet tall. Adams was a banker, just like Murray was, but they both lost their jobs during the 2008 financial crash. Unlike Murray, however, Adams should have been on a path to move up the company and secure a better position for himself in the future, maybe allowing him to start a family. Those plans were dashed by the year 2008, of course, and Adams received the title of Death at the same time that Murray became Pestilence. They would meet Stephen Tumicelli and Qamar Al-Amin not much longer afterwards, after being directed to Oklahoma by the Watchers. Death was the best administrator, of course, and that was how he became the de facto leader. After all, it was him that was doing the logistical part of this operation. His ability is similar to Famine’s, allowing him to drain the life from others. However, unlike Famine, Death’s power works by taking souls. When in possession of someone’s soul, he can take control of that person. His ability is also more targeted towards humans, and he has the additional ability of shifting into a non material form.

Technology

Iron Bird: The Iron Bird is a transport plane designed by Lockheed Martin, with assistance from metahuman experts including Troy Cavaco. The transport was first designed for the Syndicate but is now produced in the United States for the U.S. Air Force, and is exported to countries around the world such as the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and the Philippines. The craft is meant to both transport members of the Syndicate and provide support against some of the tougher targets that the Syndicate faces in the field. In addition to having reinforced front plating and countermeasures against missile based targets, the Iron Bird is equipped with two 30mm autocannons that can deal damage against even the toughest metahuman targets. The Iron Bird is powered by two large engines that alternate between a vertical and horizontal position, allowing for vertical takeoffs and landings.
Image

Challenger Armored Combat Unit

The Challenger is the first prototype in a line of planned Syndicate armored units, created in collaboration with Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, which are designed to stand up to attacks from even the most dangerous metahumans and assist in apprehending or killing these individuals. The Challenger is a bipedal mech that could be considered closer to a suit of power armor, as it is only about 8.4 feet tall and encloses most of the pilot’s body. The controls of the mech are bonded with the body and mind of the pilot, through a device fixed to the spinal cord and a helmet that encloses the face. Attempting to activate the mech without having this implant will result in death by electrocution, as a result of the technology used to make the piloting system work.

Once inside the mech and fitted with the helmet, the pilot can use their mind to command the different systems of the vehicle. The movement abilities are enhanced by a set of jets located on the back of the vehicle, allowing for quick movement just above the surface of the ground, or for limited flight in the form of high jumps and jet assisted landings. This adds mobility in urban combat situations and allows the mech to move behind an enemy formation to attack. The area around the jump jets, located on the mech’s back, can be fitted with long or short range missiles depending on the situation. A typical launcher module will carry 30 missiles, although this amount can be changed to carry less missiles of a higher yield.

The right hand of the mech is embedded with an autocannon, which is useful against both material targets and metahumans with strong defensive abilities. A machine gun is embedded in the left hand, which is useful against smaller targets. Both wrists are embedded with advanced energy projectors, allowing for the creation of two blades that are mounted to each wrist and can cut through many materials, aiding with breaking down enemy defenses. The chest of the mech is equipped with countermeasures against rockets and other tracking based attacks, which are modeled after those of tanks and jet fighters.

The mech is still a prototype, however, and has several weaknesses. The fuel lines on the back that run to the jump jets are vulnerable to exploding if fired on. The jump jets themselves can be damaged somewhat easily in battle and render the mech with far less movement ability if destroyed. Resupplying in the field isn’t possible yet, and the mech only carries so much ammunition before it’s left having to fist fight with enemies, and it also needs to carry fuel. The rocket rack is prone to exploding if hit with certain types of attacks, which could be catastrophic and trigger other ammunition explosions that entirely destroy the mech. Additionally, the joints are the most vulnerable parts and some metahumans could easily cripple those areas.

While the mech does have a lot of weaknesses, and is hard to find pilots for, it is only a prototype in a long development cycle that will continue for years. The project is heavily invested in by the Syndicate, and could be considered the personal pet project of world class engineer and Council of Ten member Beatriz “Machina” Ortega. The project has also been worked on by top Syndicate defense engineer Troy Covaco, who promised sponsors and investors the release of a non-prototype model by 2025.

Security forces working for Life Incorporated

Life Incorporated, founded in Shenzhen but with branches in Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Britain, and the United States, is a conglomerate that specializes in technology, medicinal supplies, and scientific research through its shell companies. It also has a multimedia division that is growing by the year and buying up stations and newspapers in multiple countries around the world. The company is not publicly traded and details on its ownership are unclear. It appears to have a Shenzhen based board of directors, but the exact funding of the company and the nature of this board of directors is unknown.

The company reports high earnings publicly, however, and investigations into it haven't come up with any evidence of forging the numbers. The company has only existed in some form since 2015, but has already made progress in the fields that it was established in. According to the company itself, their quick rise is because they have assembled some of the "top and brightest talents in the world" in their respective fields, using their original seed money to lure professionals who would normally be hard to acquire. Still, their rise to becoming a relevant company is nothing less than shocking, especially in the competitive fields of multimedia, security, and technology. They've already pushed the boundaries in fields like these, creating smaller processors and some cutting edge weapons that are being considered as options for use by countries such as the United States and Russia.

Where the money goes is unclear. But what is clear is the fact that Life Incorporated is here to stay, for better or worse and in Santa Marina or beyond.

Two questions:

1) May I make Tartarus into a faction? Or in other words, can I make a PMC specializing in metahuman affairs that uses homegrown/recruited metas in its ranks? Or is there an existing faction that already fills that role.

2) Given that the Outsiders are the only aliens in this RP, and Dagon's suit is supposed to be based on an alien symbiote that transforms the host to a different life form, can I say the suit is based on modified Outsider tech? Or is better to say it was found in unidentified space wreckage without higher intelligence or culture?

Tartarus can be a faction if you want someone doing it at a larger scale, because right now the main other groups playing those roles are Nova Schools and those are very localized and are lower level third world operations. Also, as far as the Outsiders go, you should use different aliens. The Outsiders... Have a very specific set of things that they use, it'll be built on more later but it's unlikely that any human ends up with their tech.

I don't believe so, although non-Outsider alien tech/symbiotes can be a source of powers.

Outsiders are entirely separate from humans. They don't interact with humans other than passive observation, and humans can't understand the Outsider language or technology.

So humans have not even understood the outsiders, and already they are shooting them.

Well, in our defence they've made no moves to contact us and are generally being all mysterious and ominous.

Well, they haven't been shot at much.

China shot down one ship when it was over restricted territory, but as Lunas said, they don't communicate at all and there's no way to tell their intent. Most human nations don't engage them because they fear retaliation.

If your cat isn't cold, distant, and you know in your heart it will eat you when you die, you might as well have a dog!

Ooh, that just gave me an idea.

PLAYER CHARACTER APPLICATION

VITALS

Name: Autumn Summers
Nickname/Alias: Assimilator
Appearance:
Image
Image

Gender: F.
Age: 19.
Build: 5'4", 130 lbs, somewhat athletic build.

Primary Ability: Alien Symbiote: Autumn discovered an alien symbiote one day. Since that day, it has been... bonded to her on an almost genetic level. It is part of her and she is part of it. Where she begins and the symbiote ends, beyond their individual and separate brains, is indecipherable when looking at her DNA and such. The Symbiote can let her form a biomechanical armor around herself, further enhancing her already enhanced strength/speed and reaction times. She can form some tools/weapons with her biomechanical symbiote, but usually, it's the symbiote deciding what weapons might be appropriate.

Other Abilities: Symbiotic Telempathy: Due to a bit of error in translating some of the Symbiote's powers into her brain, Autumn interprets the Symbiote's full-blown telepathic reading of other minds as a sort of pseudo-telempathy. She can get the general idea of what someone is thinking or feeling in a given situation, but it is only especially useful and accurate in combat - especially if the Symbiote is fighting on her behalf since it is less limited.

Power Drawbacks: Dietary Requirements: Autumn is now an obligate carnivore, and must eat a lot of meat to feed both her and the Symbiote - failure to do so means the Symbiote will begin munching on both of their excess biomass, which will weaken them and make injuries heal slower or not at all.

Parasitic Influence: The Symbiote is independent at least in its thought process. This means that it can influence Autumn and her thoughts to some degree, and can sometimes act of its own accord if it feels it or its host are threatened. This makes Autumn slightly less predictable.

Equipment: Biomechanical Armor, as created by the Symbiote.

DETAILS

Nationality: American.
Hometown: Santa Marina.
Sexuality: Demisexual (possibly influenced by the Symbiote), formerly just heterosexual.

Biggest Flaw: Autumn has difficulty controlling the Symbiote, at times, and has to constantly reel it in in terms of its thinking and actions.
Main Skills: The Symbiote has granted Autumn immense fighting skill and combat capability. She personally knew how to cook - somewhat.

Personality: Autumn Summers used to be very fun loving, and was outgoing and humorous. Now, she's a bit more... quiet. Usually, she has this cloud of paranoia around her - of herself and others - mostly caused by the Symbiote. The Symbiote often makes her seem violent or excessive, especially in cases where it takes control and does something too violent for her heroic persona.

Biography: Autumn Summers was born to an unknown mother and father, but adopted by Josephine and Michelle Summers. She grew up in a loving home, encouraged to explore and to learn and just enjoy life. She did well enough in school, but most of the time she wanted to be outdoors. She was rather excitable and loved to swim. By age 10, she was already gearing up to be an athlete.

Of course, everything changed after she finished her Sophmore year at high school at age 15. Over the summer, she went camping with her family and a few friends. One night, she was lying awake and heard something very loud go 'boom' in the sky like thunder. Curious, she exited her tent and saw a meteor crash in the distance of the forest. Deciding to investigate, she went in the direction of the meteor.

When she got there, she began to feel a bit disoriented and eventually found herself falling into the crater, only for something... to attach itself to her. When she woke up, she had powers - or rather, she had an alien symbiote that gave her powers. Deciding to try and become a hero despite the violent suggestions of the Symbiote, as well as to protect her family, she joined the Syndicate about two years later - as soon as she was able, and otherwise doing all she could to contain the Symbiote.

Now, Autumn sees her team as a group of friends. If only the Symbiote would stop suggesting she eat all of their brains...

NPC APPLICATION

VITALS

Name: Hank Underhill
Nickname/Alias: N/A.
Appearance:
Image

Gender: M.
Age: 37.

Ability/Abilities: None.
Equipment: Personal taser.

DETAILS

Faction: Humanity First of America
Nationality: American.
Skills: Self-proclaimed “politician.” Pretty good a talking.

Short Bio: Hank Underhill is the Director of Santa Marina's Humanity First of America, which in and of itself is a branch of the Humanity First of America movement that holds a lot of anti-alien / anti-metahuman sentiment, especially the former. He often leads protests and attempts to leverage his few connections to try and run for office, and has done so for many years. Of course, like most HFA members, he's had little success.

In a scandal about one year ago, Hank was revealed to be extremely anti-metahuman when he told off an independent metahuman using their powers to make money to stop “cheating” and called them various slurs. It was eventually dismissed as him being part of HFA, which has caused a slight downsizing in the local numbers in Santa Marina as of late. However, Underhill has intentions to possibly run for Mayor of Santa Marina in the near future.

FACTION APPLICATION

Name: Humanity First (Symbol; Flag of the Libyan Protectorate, the only HF-sponsored/owned government on Earth - Arabic text translates roughly to “Protection of/for all human beings” or “Protection of/for all mankind.”)

Membership: Close to over one million on a global scale, with most of these from North Africa or the Middle East - the highest concentration being in Libya.

Areas of Operation: Operate globally as a political organization, but in terms of actual control/influence, they are pretty major in North Africa and the Middle East, and have an actual government that they back/have created in Libya.

Alignment: Humanity (against everyone else).

Description of Faction Strength Level: Politically, economically, etc. it depends on region - the higher anti-metahuman, antialien or general prohuman sentiment is in a given area, the higher influence or presence they may have.

Background: Humanity First finds its origins during the rise and fall of the Legends, especially in their final days. Starting in various parts of North Africa as an anti-metahuman group, it eventually came to flourish when it adapted and assimilated Islamic fundamentalist aspects into its ideology. In the years that followed, Humanity First and its message spread like wildfire across North Africa as well as in the Middle East.

Eventually, political organizations adopted the Humanity First brand and adapted it to suit their own religions or motivations, and the movement went global - often with the emphasized goal of improving humanity's lives economically and socially while having a strong sense of antialien and anti-metahuman sentiment.

By 2015, the government of Libya had all but collapsed - that is, until Humanity First and its members began to consolidate power there and founded the “Libyan Protectorate” which claims sovereignty over Libya to this day but continues to go unrecognized by the United Nations. When people think of Humanity First at its worst or its most radical members, they think of Libya - which routinely executes or imprisons metahumans and nonhumans alike.

Libya has also become little more than a petty dictatorship run by Imez Afolabi, a man calling himself the First Citizen of the Libyan Protectorate, Protector of the Libyan People and President of the Human Interests Council that acts as his 'government' there. Often called President Afolabi or First Citizen-Protector Afolabi, he is seen as the world's cruelest dictator by some and a non-threat by others - usually, where Humanity First has branches or stronger influence.

The Humanity First of America movement has often been decried as nothing more than spreading the hatred that Afolabi and people associated with him spread. Overall, Humanity First is viewed as an alternative political and religious organization with predominant ties to Islam and North Africa, especially Libya. Afolabi is actually praised by many of Humanity First's members across the globe, despite the slight differences in religious views present. Of course, Humanity First's politicians and influencers do not acknowledge such claims against them.

Libya's strong alliance with China, along with the fact that there are bigger things to worry about than Humanity First and its cruel regime and the possibility of more regimes rising, has prevented the UN or the Syndicate from doing much more than disacknowledging the fact that Afolabi is the effective ruler of Libya...

So humans have not even understood the outsiders, and already they are shooting them.
Guess we are just primitive, stupid apes after all...

Hey, you try interpreting a language with over 140 different forms for each verb, 4(more like 3) grammatical genders, and 76 different forms for most nouns. Not to mention the phonology and writing system...

PLAYER CHARACTER APPLICATION

VITALS
Image

Name:Jennifer Jane Doe
Nickname/Alias: Dough Girl
Appearance:
Image

Gender:Female
Age: 20
Build: tall (5'11"), lean, and somewhat muscular

Primary Ability:
Unbreakable Bones: Jenny's bones could withstand under immense stress and physical force. It would take heavier weaponry to cause cracks open her bones.

Other Abilities: (Should be related to the primary or weaker than the primary)
Diamond Skin: Like her bones, Jenny has unusually resilient skin that is impervious to any physical harm or damage. Bullets, blades, and explosives just seem to bounce off of her as if they were made of Styrofoam.
Power Drawbacks:
- Just because her bones are near-indestructable doesn't mean she is invulnerable. A well-place strike with a small enough weapon between the ribs can still damage her internal organs.
- Other than the fact that blunt weapons would have little effect on her, poison is still viable as a method to dispose her.
- Acid can do damage to her skin though it depends how concentrated the formula is.
- Apply enough blunt force and her internals organs can risk rupture while her skin and skeleton remain unscathed.
Equipment: bullet-proof helmet, utility vest, frag grenades, Bazooka, rockets, drum mags, shotgun slugs and buckshots, a modified Tommy gun
, sixtuple-barreled sawed-off shotgun, Bowie knife, a frying pan, and a great claymore.

DETAILS

Nationality: American
Hometown: Born in the Doe family estate in in the Midwest
Sexuality: Unconcerned

Biggest Flaw: despite being very violent and aggressive, she is the most easiest to read and break when her friends are in danger of death
Main Skills:
- skilled in hand-to-hand combat and with various melee weapons
- diagnosed with the rare disease of Congenital Analgesia (unable to feel pain)
- very agile with her rocket jumps
Personality: The attack dog of her team. Fierce, violent, and loyal to the bitter end; she would never abandon her friends and comrades even when facing total defeat. Jenny would fight and shoot until there was nothing left to fight and shoot. She would never surrender even if she was outnumbered 1,000 to 1.

Biography: Jennifer Jane Doe was born with traits inherited from her Scottish mother: red hair, blue eyes, and her unwavering attitude towards life. As such, she was the most stressful one to raise to adulthood. Luckily, her father was never a serious type and happily played with Jenny from the morning up to the sun setting down. When her mother gave birth to 6 more daughters, he unfortunately had to take care of Jenny and her sisters.

Exhausted from the baby-sitting, Jenny's grandfather was called by the dad to help take care of the kids. Since Jenny was the eldest sibling by a couple years, her dad figured it was easier for the grandfather to care for her. Since the grandfather had 20+ years of mercenary experience, she was getting the best protection possible for her father's eyes.

It was all fine and dandy until Jenny's grandfather accidentally got her bitten in the head by a grizzly bear when she was nine. When he ask how she manage to live, she said a grey man in grey googles in grey gloves showed up while he was away and told her that death will be difficult find her. The bear had to spend 3 months in an animal hospital getting his teeth and jaw fixed.

Ever since that incident, her grandfather took Jenny to even more dangerous expeditions without her father knowing. Mountain-climbing, bear-wrestling, target-shooting was done in secret over the years until her father found out when Jenny came home in rags with a body of bobcat that she strangled with her bare hands. She immediately told him that granddad took her out hunting and that this was her first kill. She was 12 when the truth was unveiled.

It from that point on that Jenny was not allowed to do anything dangerously stupid...without him watching. Jenny's father would find himself cheering her on as she tackle a snake, grapple a fish, or punching down a tree. When she reached 16, her father sent her to learn karate so she can fight more organized and not messy. Due to her powers, she was not allowed to participate in tournaments against other humans. It took four long years to reach black belt as Jenny struggled to stay calm and focus on the lessons that she had to learn.

In the meantime, her grandfather was teaching her how to rocket jump using his bazooka that he used back when he was a merc. She was a natural at the rocket jumping and quickly learned how to be nimble and aim mid-flight. But soon enough, the Syndicate traveled to the Doe estate to recruit Jenny, which she accept. With a heavy heart while all of her sisters watching, her dad waved goodbye the next day knowing full well that Jenny is going to nail some idiots with the weapons and the knowledge that she has.

Weapon Lore
Image
A high-tech rocket launcher with a slimmer barrel and a smaller exhaust port, outfitted with a x8 scope.
Made specifically for precision and anti-armor capabilities, the Direct Hit bazooka that Jenny uses was the original design of Mann Co. The ammunition, however, were all created in Stockwell Steelworks and a variety of them made their way to Jenny's hands. There are napalm-infused, smoke rockets, concussion rockets for increased jump height, and standard Anti-tank Armor-Piercing rockets. With the muzzle velocity of 144m/s, these munitions had such huge emphasis on projectile speed and penetration that Jenny describe them to be more like over sized bullets with an explosive tip than a AT rocket.

Image
A sawed-off sextuple barreled shotgun designed by Stockwell Steelworks.
Very few of them were made as the massive recoil ensured than no ordinary human would be able to fire it without breaking their wrists. As a result, meta-humans similar to Jenny were given the six-barreled shotgun as a good luck gift. Meant to used in one hand, this shotgun delivers extremely heavy punishment on the target in close and mid-range engagements. Combined with buckshot, this gun becomes an effective crowd-control weapon. Also, you will hear the gun a mile away when all six barrels fire at once.

Image
Based on the design of the Colt Defender, this 3 inch eight barreled double-action shotgun sparks absolute fear to those who stand before it.
Unlike the Six-Shooter, this shotgun has a magazine located in the center the gun that allows it to fire two more times. Due to the amount of recoil from eight barrels going off at once, the Octopus had to used with two hands for maximum stability. The amount damage inflicted from buckshot or slugs is far more devastating than the Six-Shooter. Only major drawback is replacing the magazine in the gun.

Image
Originally under the ownership of her mother, this sword was made as a birthday present to herself when she was drunk. Now, Jenny uses it as a melee weapon along side with her frying pan. Though not originally made to experience combat, Crownslayer was quickly modified to be more suited for its new use shortly after Jenny arrived in Santa Marina. With the two-handed blade at her disposal, Jenny could learn proper sword techniques in order to increase its deadliness or she could attach it to her bazooka like an over-sized bayonet.

Image
Durable, heavy, easy to swing, and capable of frying eggs, this weapon would shatter the skulls of her enemies whenever Jenny market gardens them. The frying pan succeeds where other weapons fail, most of the time. It's bulletproof too.

Luna's directed me here. What follows isn't finalized, it's just a bit of brainstorming.

PLAYER CHARACTER APPLICATION

VITALS

Name:
Nickname/Alias: Viper
Appearance:
*TEMP image*Image

Gender: Female
Age: 22
Build: Slinder

Primary Ability: Snake Form

Other Abilities: Venom, Hypnosis,

Power Drawbacks: Her skin sheds from time to time and she lacks arms while a snake, and has other disadvantages relating to that form.

Equipment: (If Applicable)

DETAILS

Nationality: Congese
Hometown: Likasi
Sexuality: I'm not not into ladies if that's what your asking; but I'll entertain your notions- but only so far- I'm a tease *chuckle*

Biggest Flaw: Scatter brained, likes to scar people playfully, not the most stable of minds, wants to be loved but also has a plan to kill you- still wants to be your friend though- but she does have a plan to kill you and everyone she knows. Doesn't tell them though- but she still has such a plan even if they mean killing softly because of friendship.
Main Skills:

Personality: "When I was in high school, and that wasn't so long ago- I dreamed of employing a team to create a virus that would alter those infected so their offspring would be fully functional hermaphrodites as a way to end the gender identity crisis... I'm over those thoughts now but it's something I've considered. I had also considered just destroying Humanity, becoming an immortal brain, and being the goddess of a reptilian race but that too has faded. What I'm getting at is that I have dark thoughts and being around you gives me hope. The virus plan wouldn't have worked anyways- people would just assign their children a gender treating them as some plague rather then the generation of a new era but I digress- you mentioned lunch?"

Biography: (Should be at least two paragraphs.) OP- I'd like her to have some relation to the Legends or a lackey of them.
