SARGOSSANS MANIFEST MERSON MISERY
Eura slump to opening day defeat at Cup of Harmony
Euran fans travelling to southeast Graintfjall for the Cup of Harmony had little to celebrate as they watched their side go down limply to a Pablo Alarcón brace.
In just his second game in charge, interim manager Glen Merson deployed a “strong” line-up (if there is such a thing these days) against a traditional Euran regional rival in both sport and other arenas. Unfortunately, Eura’s underwhelming record against the Corsairs was worsened by this performance, with Eura off the pace from the word go. 13 minutes was all it took for Alarcón to stroke home a delightful opener after a perfectly weighted diagonal ball from Orlando Segovia dropped perfectly for Alarcón to finish.
Tom Hammond’s continued shakiness dealing with set pieces was ruthlessly exposed shortly afterwards as he flailed at a corner that almost went in directly, before being cleared off the line by stalwart Jack Menard. The 1830 Cathair centreback must wish he was born into a different generation of Euran footballers – once again he proved to be the only consistent member of a backline that on paper should be formidable, but in practice comes undone all too often.
Eura managed to string together a couple of spells of possession and pressure towards the break but without creating any meaningful chances before a killer blow in first half stoppage time, Alarcón getting luckier this time as an instinctive, flashing drive from outside the area clipped Lucy Almwood’s heel and deflected under Hammond’s outstretched left leg. One of Eura’s most talented ever left backs looks set to end her international career with a back catalogue of disappointment, and this episode won’t have given her any silver linings to remember fondly.
It was a particularly disappointing evening for Oscar Vincent who looked as if he couldn’t wait for the domestic season to return. The midfielder exchanged what appeared to be strong and possibly quite petulant words with Merson as he was hauled off in the 74th minute, replaced by club teammate and international debutant Roy Champion. Champion and another newbie, Owen Holden, put in tidy performances after both coming off the bench, but this was barely anything to celebrate on yet another evening to forget for the once great Euran national team.
Pundits such as former Euran international Kris Campbell, whose new column for the Emplor starts tomorrow, now expect Merson to make major changes to the side for the next game, including a return to the starting line-up for Owen James and Sophie Singh. But the significance of these switches seems almost irrelevant in the shadow of the major reforms being discussed as the government’s review into Euran football continues apace.
Gold League clubs have held a secretive summit with Minister of Sport Peter Lake, and reports from inside that meeting suggest Lake gave club owners a dressing down like they have never seen before. Social Party insiders claim Lake rebuked the ownership class of the Euran footballing elite for harvesting massive profits without increasing investment in the grassroots game, even claiming that some clubs still hadn’t repaid government loans for the state-backed stadium expansion programme instituted decades ago.
