It was around 9pm, but even before nightfall, the sky had been dark all day. Threatening charcoal clouds had been rolling past, roiling and writhing across the sky. Once the sun had set, the floodgates opened and the rain poured down.

Les Licornes had been practicing for their upcoming game against Cassadaigua late into the afternoon, but now they had packed up and everyone had gone home. Everyone, that is, except Laurent Lapix, the young starting midfielder, who remained on the pitch, juggling a soccer ball back and forth on his knees.

The rain ran down Laurent's face in rapid rivulets, cascading off his nose and dripping from his chin. It collected in his brows and pooled in his eyes. Laurent swiped some of it away with the back of his hand. He was operating from muscle memory anyway and hardly needed to see, which was fortunate, since the lights at the edge of the field were weak and far and did little more than make him glisten in the rain. A highlight shone across his cheekbones and glinted as he moved.

The only sound was the rain beating on the grass and on his head--it drowned out any other noise. But Laurent could feel, if not hear, his heart pounding in his chest. Each time he opened his mouth to breathe more heavily, more rain ran in and he pressed his lips shut in frustration and determination.

There was a flash of light and thing the sharp crack of thunder immediately overhead. In the instant of brightness, Laurent had seen the silhouette of an approaching man. Another couple instants later, he was close enough that Laurent could make him out even through the rain and gloom. It was Ägidius Heissler, the team assistant manager.

He yelled through the storm. "Laurent, I gotta lock up! Aren't you going to catch a cold out here in this downpour?" Unlike Laurent, who was dressed in only his uniform of shorts and a jersey, Ägidius wore a heavy raincoat. He had the hood pulled down over his face, but had folded it back out of his eyes. Laurent thought it made him look comically similar to North Sea fisherman caught in a storm.

Laurent stopped juggling the ball and catching it, stowed it under his elbow so he could throw his other arm around Ägidius' shoulders as they walked off the field together.

"I'll be fine!" he yelled back. "Sorry, I hope I didn't make you stay late!" Practice had ended over three hours ago.

Ägidius shook his head. "I was busy with some paperwork. But then when I was about to head home I saw you were still here." He shot Laurent a glance. "I'm sure Coach Bonheur appreciates your dedication, but it seems... a bit extreme."

"We need some extreme measures if we're going to turn this campaign around," said Laurent. "Tied for last place? Four points in Five games? It's abysmal!"

"It's not that bad," protested Ägidius. "It's a tight qualification group. We're tied with Mytanija, for Pete's sake. We can turn it around."

"I know it's your job to keep up morale," said Laurent, "But I'm not stupid. Our next game is against Cassadaigua. Does anyone think we can win that one? And then we do it all again, and I saw how it went the first time. Nothing has changed since then. We'll finish out with another underwhelming string of draws, and head to the Cup of Harmony... unless we start putting in some extra effort. Which is why I'm out here."

Ägidius raised a skeptical eyebrow. "It won't be worth it if you ruin your health. We're relying on you, Laurent. I know your tactics are a bit different than what everyone else is used to, since you're the only one who doesn't play in Reçueçn right now. But the vision you have in the midfield is sublime. We'd be lost without your leadership. Emanuele is great at what he does but he can't marshal a defense the way Gerauld can, and with him still gone for another couple months at least, it falls to you to be that person people look to."

"I understand that," said Laurent. "But if I want to be that person, then like I said, I need to put in the extra effort."

"I'm not going to tell you not to put in more effort," said Ägidius. "But as your coach, I will tell you: no more practicing in the rain. It's November. I'm serious when I say we can't afford for you to get sick. Stay dry. That's an order. Do you understand?"

"Yes coach."

"Good boy. Now go grab a towel, dry off, and get some sleep. We have a big day tomorrow if we're going to be ready to face Cassadaigua on Saturday."

Île de Richelieu can't score

Sankt Hans Havn, Richelieu Øy - Île de Richelieu is somehow erratic. After two wins in a row on matchdays 3 and 4, the Bears lost 1-0 against Sargossa on week 5 and 4-0 against the United Mandaran States on matchday 6. First, Île de Richelieu travelled to Sargossa, an old nation located in Rushmore. Sargossa had a corner kick at the 56th minute. #7 kicks the ball and it goes directly into the net without touching anyone and the Oldies (because they're an old nation) are leading 1-0. This is the final score.

GAME SUMMARY
56th GOAL SARGOSSA #7 (corner kick)

On the next week, the Bears received the United Mandaran States at Bjørnefjellets Nasjonalstadion. Hjalmar Boberg missed the game for having a red card against Sargossa and Hugo Denommée replaced him in the starting XI. The Eight Realms Army attacked at the 23rd minute when Sorabani Maratansa made a header pass to Surya Dwipayana who heads the ball past Bjørnar Grendahl-Kalberg and... wait I'm not in the mood to write a match report so let's just write whatever comes in my mind. Olaf, the chief editor, doesn't care... I sleep with him and he let me write what I want. First, we did it at the office, but now he's renting an hotel room. Apparently I'm not the only woman he brings at the hotel, but I don't care, as long as I have a job and a good wage.

Ok, I need to tell something, I still feel guilty for prejudicing Bostopia. I like Bostopia, they are the good. And Mertagne are bad. Many people in Île de Richelieu had a Mertagnian flag on their property during the war and I was standing alone with my Bostopian flag but I don't care. Well I'm not alone, because the Richelois truckers organised a rally to support Bostopia in the midst of the war and we were 16 proud supporters of Bostopia. I've met some dude, I forgot his name, he's also supporting Bostopia, he had a tin foil hat and he said Mertagne is trafficking little childs in underground pizza parlors. That's pretty weird, i don't believe that though. But maybe it's true and La pizza de la mama is related to this child traffickign ring? Ok enough weird thoughts, have a good day!

WORLD CUP 96: VYKTORIA PLAY CAGEY DRAW IN SIOVANIJA AND TEUSLAND
Siovanija and Teusland 1-1 Vyktoria
13' Zak (Krukenberg)
78' Goldman (Arland III)
Attendance: 52,139

In a game that got away from the Maroon Dragons early, right-winger Krukenberg looped a cross into the box which the keeper punched away, only for Zak to get on the end of the punched ball and smack it into the back of the net, silencing the 4,000 or so away fans who had travelled to the 60,000 capacity Draistadion in St. Jakob. Vyktoria then tried multiple times to get through, only to have most chances thwarted. Kevin Arland III extended his goalless streak, but did get an assist as left-winger Garry Goldman received a through pass from the striker to score the equaliser in the 78th minute, though it wasn't the best of passes and looked more like a stroke of luck. Nevertheless Vyktoria will be disappointed with the draw against what they perceived as a beatable opponent.

WORLD CUP 96: VYKTORIA LOSE TO LATE PASARGA GOAL
Vyktoria 0-1 Pasarga
87' Salai (Földessi)
Attendance: 49,978

Vyktoria bravely held onto a scoreless draw in front of a sell-out crowd against Pasarga, and all was well before an 87th minute run down the right flank saw right winger Földessi loop in a killer cross to Salai, who put it past vice-captain keeper Martin Kingston to send the away end into jubilation, but the Maroon Dragons can take into account the fact that they didn't get blown out by the top 20 ranked team as a morale booster, though questions are being asked of left-back Jack Hardy after letting right wingers get past him three times this qualifying, in pivotal losses to boot.

WORLD CUP 96: GROUP 9 PROGRESS REVIEW

* Group 9                           Pld    W   D   L    GF   GA   GD   Pts
1 Amenria 5 4 1 0 13 5 +8 13
2 Independent Athletes from Quebec 5 4 1 0 10 5 +5 13
3 Pasarga 5 2 2 1 3 1 +2 8
4 Doubeia 5 1 2 2 4 4 0 5
Vyktoria 5 1 2 2 7 7 0 5
6 Siovanija and Teusland 6 1 1 4 6 11 −5 4
7 Cardenao 5 0 1 4 8 18 −10 1

The group looks to be a battle between the Quebecois and the Amenrians, with Pasarga having an unusally poor start to qualifying. Vyktoria will be happy with 5th, but it's an odd 5th place, as they definitely have shown signs of great promise and hope to beat some of the other teams in the second leg of qualifiers, hopefully gaining some much needed ranking points and perhaps earning a spot in the Cup of Harmony, because they are definitely not qualifying for this World Cup, nor did they expect to.

ELECTION 60 IC: LATEST POLLING SHOWS MASSIVE CHANGES AFTER "MVERSE 59" ANNOUNCEMENT
Image
The Labour and Socialist Worker's Parties both fell dramatically as the smaller parties in Gloria Victoria and Itavran Reunification broke above threshold for the first time in polling history, while the Environmentalist and Liberal Democrat parties also rose quite dramatically. It appears there has been a major shift in Vyktorian poltiics ahead of the Mverse 59 multiverse summit to be held in Wyckham along with Itavran Expo 59 in Indigo Bay, both will take place in the March of 59 IC.

OOC: Project Kalliope will be taking a break this MatchDay, as I've not got many ideas on how to actually do the meeting of these multiverse people at the presidential palace, so please have a "journalistic" column about the event, which could be described as "supplemental content".

Image
PIERCE CARLSON'S THINKTANK
OPINION: WHY IS THE MULTIVERSE HERE?

The Multiverse Summit, or Mverse 59 as the cosmopolitan elites are calling it, is nothing but a farce. We left the so-called "Draconic" Commonwealth of Itavr to get away from these freaks, and the response to Mverse 59 is the party of the true patriots, Gloria Victoria, finally getting above threshold. You just have to ignore the party's more activist supporters, especially when they make the stupidest threats. Not only do they damage the brand of conservative this paper nourishes, they also can get into deep trouble by saying racially charged and even speciesist bull, which no-one with a brain would say out loud. Sure, many of us think these things, but there comes a point where saying them is wrong. You have to justify it, you see. You can say things like "Multiverse immigrants cause a financial strain on our economy." and people would debate you, and as a conservative, you'd beat any of those punk-ass liberals. But saying crap like "Multiverse Immigrants F**k Off, Alien Scum Dies in Vyktoria" and the like makes you look worse than those Antifa scum. Anyway, the censors at the loony lefty Wyckham Gazette and liberal scumbag Indigo Bay Times wouldn't let this be published, and the Wyckham Tribune hasn't gotten back to me, so the Lionvale Sun it is, an old reliable paper for the conservatively minded in this great nation of ours.

(The Wyckham Tribune has also run this column. Tribune Media Group holds no responsibility for what is essentially Mr. Carlson's opinion. -Ed)

Part Four: The Unexpected Leader

In the midst of chaos and confusion, Len is thrust into a position of leadership as the fate of the mission hangs in the balance.

The Space Corps' twelve drawn-out months of basic training had finally come to an end, and thanks to the mentorship of Admiral Kirana, Len had earned the moderate rank of Petty Officer. Even better than that was the news that Len wouldn't have to wait for his first mission; he was to board the Baggielandian Ship BS Hyperion immediately for a routine patrol to the outermost edge of the known universe.

Len restlessly boarded the Hyperion and before he could fathom out how his life had changed, the ship was at the outermost edge; that hyperdrive is without doubt the best invention to come out of Baggieland. The days swiftly became routine as Len meticulously patrolled his section, checking that all systems were operating correctly. This was quite boring actually. Were there even aliens in space? Were all these Space Corps reports of intergalactic battles just stories?

It was just another day, the ship's entertainment system was displaying the latest results from World Cup 96. Baggieland had suffered its first defeat: a 2 – 0 loss to HUElavia, those damned Los Amarillos must be made to suffer when the reverse fixture is played at Dartmouth Hill. Why were we even fighting aliens when we should be fighting HUElavia? Still, it was back to winning ways with a nervy 2 – 1 victory over The Kytler Peninsulae. The Throstles had dropped to second in the table, but qualification was a definite possibility. With all the crew's eyes affixed firmly on the football results, suddenly…

"Captain, there are five vessels heading our way," proclaimed Lieutenant Bohdan, his eyes glued apprehensively at his radar monitor.

"Put it on the screen," urgently demanded Captain Altanchimeg. "Oh no… those are Romvesen fighters… ALARM!"

Whilst those brilliant Baggielandian scientists had indeed invented the hyperdrive, defensive shields that cover the entire ship were nothing more than science-fiction fantasy. In an instant the bridge suffered a devastating direct hit from the blast of one of the Romvesen fighters. Captain Altanchimeg, Lieutenant Bohdan and the entire hierarchy of BS Hyperion all laid dead.

"Sir come quickly, all the commanders are dead," desperately pleaded one of the ratings.

"But I'm just a petty officer, I've never commanded a ship," came Len's panic-stricken reply.

"Sir, the Romvesens are attacking us, what shall we do?"

For a moment, Len's thoughts drifted back to his footballing days. When he was Baggieland's first-choice defensive midfielder, it was his job to be in charge of the defence. Yes, he had been a leader before and if he could do it on the pitch, then there was no reason why he couldn't do it onboard a spaceship.

"Those fighters are too fast for our laser canon to be effective, plus if there are fighters here, then the Romvesen mother-ship must be close by."

"What are we going to do Sir?"

"We're going to leg it! Prepare the hyperdrive."

BS Hyperion returned home after its encounter with the Romvesens. What kind of reception would Len receive? What would Admiral Kirana say?

MILITARY HISTROY OF AUPRUSSIA INTERREGNE REMAIY

Accounts by deu Lithos written in 195 ASE
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3

deu Aron and deu Giron's Destiny (15 ASE)
After leaving Aupas due to deu Perin's decision to swear fealty to the Kingdom of Piendoux they headed south towards Teolander lands. deu Aron and deu Giron knew of a buffer zone in between the Aupalici lands and the Teolander Kingdoms and decided to start anew there. deu Aron established what would become the city of Raimaud and gave command of the fighting men to deu Giron. deu Giron had experience being a commander during the Aupalici unification but had also vehemently disagreed with deu Perin's decision to swear fealty to the Kingdom of Piendoux. Now he is the main general of a spirited but inexperienced army. deu Giron shortly thereafter drilled his men hard.

deu Aron had received news that a delegation from the nearby Teolander Kingdom were to arrive very soon so he organized his most trusted advisors and prepared for their arrival. Once the delegation arrived the Teolander named Morbrandt told deu Aron that they had to leave because the land was claimed by the Teolander King Arlect Bertrand. deu Aron knew this claim was frivolous at best and refused to lead his people away again after settling down. Morbrandt threatened "If you do not leave, we will be forced to make you leave". deu Aron responded with "I will not leave while I still have breath" and kicked the delegation out of the land.

Afterwards deu Giron rounded up his men and marched towards the marsh south of Raimaud determined to stop the invaders.

Morbrandt's Anger (16 ASE)
Upon the return of the delegation Morbrandt was furious and sent one of the commanders with a contingent of 4000 men. The commander was named Artold Mautobald and he had explicit instructions to destroy the opposition. Morbrandt's anger knew no bounds and when his temper flared he could go on for days or even weeks. Artold dared not deviate from orders for that reason. Artold had a limited amount of cavalry most sources say at most 700 Lancers. Most of Artold's army comprised of Heavy Spearmen and Axemen (2000, and 800 respectively) and he had 500 Archers. Heading north, Artold did not send scouts for fear of ambushes.

Back in the Teolander capital Neuchatel Morbrandt had told his advisors his plan to expand north, not just into the buffer zone but all the way north into Piendoux and Aupalici lands. Morbrandt had this vision of a vast Teolander empire that can contest his rivals to the west like the Morgavinds and to contest the growing power of the Kingdom of Basonia. It was alleged that Morbrandt was the real power broker in the kingdom because he was Bertrand's closest friend and confidant. It is strange at this time to see a diplomat wield this much power.

The Battle of the Red Marsh (16 ASE)
deu Giron had only 1800 men. 1000 Spearmen that fight like the Aupalici Spearmen (You could argue they are the same unit) and 800 "Adrantaire" or what could be described as Heavy Swordsmen. Not many sources even know how the Remaiy even got the resources to arm these men but a theory has come about: It is possible that when deu Aron left deu Perin as a part of one of the treaties signed with Piendoux wanted deu Aron's contingent of men to be better armed for their journey so one of the Piendoux spies gave them a means to make heavy armored swordsmen. It still doesn't explain how they managed to arm 800 men with this technology and to properly train them as well. The conclusion one can make is...that Piendoux themselves directly had talks with deu Aron but there is no significant record of this.

In any case Artold has lined up his men conventionally but not really tactically sound. One might want to line up the Archers in front of the infantry to start pelting the opposition but Artold figured that he would still need to engage the enemy in melee combat not only because of his limited amount of Archers and Cavalry (who were almost less than useless in the marshes) but also because his infantry's numbers could still carry the day. So he lined up his infantry normally, Spearmen in the center and 250 Axemen on either side of the spears. The rest of the Axemen, Archers, and Cavalry were in reserves.

deu Giron had lined up very unconventionally. It seemed like he only lined up his Adrantaire on the other side of the marsh looking to make a last stand but he had also sent his Spearmen into the wooded areas of the marsh. deu Giron figured that Artold would want to crash his numbers upon his swordsmen in hopes of a quick route so when that charge did happen and was slowed down in the marsh the Spearmen would throw their javelins and pelt the infantry for eternity. deu Giron jokingly said "If the fool steps foot on this land he would be the best commander in the history of our people"

Artold had done what deu Giron predicted and sent his infantry through the marshes, as the advance got slower and slower deu Giron waited until they were too bogged down to offer any real resistance. Then when the moment came the javelins flew out of the trees. Volley after volley of javelins had soften up the advance so much that most of the casualties were stuck in the marsh. The men that did make it to the other side were cut down quickly by the Adrantaire. Seeing this Artold had panicked and sent most of his reserves out, even the cavalry. However, the reserves lost their nerve and made a disorganized retreat taking Artold with them.

Artold had lost nearly all of his Infantry. 2700 men stuck within the marsh lost their lives to javelins and swords. deu Giron on the other hand had not lost a single soul. It was an amazing victory that wiped any ambitions of expanding north for the Teolanders. Upon hearing the news of the defeat Morbrandt and King Arlect had ordered the execution of Artold and had to change their plans. It is alleged that they purged the Army's oldest commanders in favor of newer younger commanders for a westward campaign...

The Remaiy had been victorious and deu Aron held a feast in deu Giron's honor, however this isn't the last time the Remaiy would make war. It would take time though as deu Aron had for the first time ever in his life have to rule over his people instead of following the word of another. deu Giron on the other hand had retired to a secluded part of Raimaud, content in the defense of his people and very much anticipating the next call to arms.

Il Scudelliano is under new management, one that presents the news about la squadra as it should instead of being a third party newspaper that supports the team only when it wants, and will remain that way until further notice

GAME AGAINST QASDEN BECAME THE AUDIOL BROTHERS SHOW - JULIO CAMPANA HAT-TRICK SAVES THE DAY AT SEA DOME

Qasden is the first team la squadra faced in a multiversal setting in this sport. Ever since that friendly 1-1 draw, Juvencus and Qasden have intertwined multiple times in the world cup qualifiers, bouts that most of the time saw Juvencus emerge victorious. Last matchday was no different than the rest, gli attaccanti proved their worth on the pitch and gave Gael Gaetan his first sigh of relief. The Audiol brothers were pivotal, scoring a goal each, with AC Serone's Faustino scoring a close-range lob after a wonderful one-two with Gennaro Munir, while Serrapince's Ceferino Audiol scored a gravity-defying header following a cross by none other than Simon Oliveira. Xavi Gasol came close to providing the Serrapince ace with another assist, however Ceferino Audiol's shot was saved by Zinnia Thurstan.

With most of the hiccups out of the way, the visit to Sea Dome was deemed a routine victory visit. However, the home side proved to be more difficult than initially estimated. A back-and-forth of goals saw the half-time scoreline at 2-2, which prompted Sea Dome to fall back and try to keep the draw. Campana was pivotal in this team's setup, having scored the 2 goals beforehand. Tatiana Vicario's entry on the pitch in injured Gilberto Soares' place was exactly what was needed, Soares had provided two assists for Campana's goals, however the harsh Sea Dome defenders had given him a hard time. Tatiana Vicario was more difficult to mark due to her small stature. With that said, a wonderful through-ball by the Alexandria City winger was exactly what Campana needed to complete his hat-trick and allow Juvencus to escape from a difficult stadium with a win.

With those 2 victories, Juvencus has moved to second place, which it will try to maintain with tooth and nail so as to at least get a playoff spot, following Brookstation's unbelievable run of form. Should Juvencus maintain an equally devastating run, it can threaten the group toppers and even cause them a slip up. Thus far, the heavy rotations by Gael Gaetan have proven to be difficult to overcome, as such, he will maintain this attitude for the games against The 14 Stars and Brookstation on the next international break. Here is the starting XI against the 14 Stars:

Starting XI:
GK:Sócrates Wright
CB:Carlo Callejon
CB:Ignacio Lopes
CB:Giorgio Stafilidi
CDM:Pierre-Didier Kouyaté
CDM:Vitale Cino
RM:Mehmet Kurtuluş
LM:Chimo Quaranta
RF:Pau Vives
LF:Xavi Gasol
CF:Ceferino Audiol

There are a few factors Gael Gaetan considers when rotating a team. Short-term individual form and long-term individual form. Ceferino Audiol is in the starting lineup due to his consistency with Serrapince, while Giorgio Stafilidi and Ignacio Lopes are exceptional in recent games. By putting Gasol and Vives on the sides, Gaetan is looking for more blind teamwork between his attackers on the sides, while Audiol is provided by the most aggressive and youthful players up front. This is a team that looks to be glued up and focused on its prize, as such older players are given more important roles to act right and give the team a steady stride against a difficult opponent that defeating Srednjaci and gave the group toppers Brookstation a hard time.

POPE DEMETRIUS X FUNERAL FINALLY TAKES PLACE - PAPAL CONCLAVE IN SIGHT

With Pope Demetrius X's funeral taking place, hundreds of thousands of people brought themselves to Pomena to observe the pontiff's funeral. Among them was the Holy Emperor, Nicola II Terzi among others. With the funeral service being lead by Cardinal Cristobal Accaiolo, people paid their final respects before Pope Demetrius X was put in his final resting place at Saint George's Basilica.

With 19 years of works as his final mark to the world, a rightful successor is to be picked in the upcoming Papal Conclave. With many cardinals in contention, this Papal Election is believed to last a long time. This could be the source of a crisis for the Church in such dire times, however it is also necessary towards its advancement in modern times.

SENTIENTS CONTINUE PERFECT START, GO FIVE POINTS CLEAR AS HALFWAY MARK LOOMS

CHAMBERLEY, SYLESTONE - How many more in-form teams are there in the world than the Sentients right now. For the past two years, it’s seemed as though they have been capable of beating almost anyone (that is, other than anyone they play in a final or anyone called Tumbra), and doing so in style, too. With the confidence of consecutive final appearances in the Campionato Esportiva and International Confederations Cup behind them, Sylestone have not dropped the pace coming into the 96th World Cup cycle and now sit five points clear as the halfway mark looms, with the final game of the first leg at the Union of Ventura yet to play; the Sentients have played everyone else in their group so far and impressively, have not dropped to any.

It is often that the stagnated nature of World Cup Qualifiers halts the momentum of teams throughout the groups, but that has been far from an issue for Mojmir Anac and his side, scoring goals with almost alarming regularity (they’re average 2.2 PER GAME SO FAR) and keeping those very precious clean sheets more often than not. In five games, the Sentients goalkeepers have only seen the ball nestle in the back of their net twice - a credit to Sylestone’s utterly phenomenal back line and style of play they utilise under Anac.

This international break kicked off with a routine win in Al-Tamazgha, the Arrosians unable to keep the baying Sentients away even in front of a supportive home crowd. With Anac opting to rest most of his critical players ahead of a top of the table clash against the Commonwealth of Baker Park in Chamberley four days later, it was right back Holly Statton who walked out with the captain’s armband, Hugo Mornington sitting on the bench ready to go if needed but ideally, just resting up for the day of the big game.

Al-Tamazgha never really stood a chance. With only one win from their five games so far, they simply could not gain any sort of leverage over the Sentients who, knowing their superior quality, took the game to them from the get go. There was none of the sitting back most fans had become accustomed to - no, against these guys, they were determined not to let them stand even a chance at taking a lead. Pressing as they did once going down against Jeruselem and Raspotochje alike, it only took twenty minutes before Morgan Gallagher’s pressing stole the ball from Taia in the Al-Tamazghan midfield, immediately slotting it between the two central defenders and directly into the forward run of Riley Strathfield. While he’s been eclipsed by Charlotte Eastwood in the big games as Sylestone’s lone forward, Strathfield has still improved vastly as a player during his time in Nephara, and has shown that with Cleorough so far this season (spoilers lol). Either way, once released by Gallagher into a one-on-one, the celebrations in the away end were beginning to kick off - there was no way Strathfield was going to miss, particularly with Kweon-Haldane hesitating for just a millisecond. The bottom corner the strike found, and Sylestone was 1-0 up just like that.

Once at was 1-0, there wasn’t really much Al-Tamazgha could do. From the midfield, the Benzakour siblings tried to create a few opportunities between themselves and the forwards, but Holly Statton was keen to show she had earned the right to wear the armband on her captaincy debut, preventing anything from escaping her on the left wing.

The lead was doubled just after the hour mark with another Gallagher assist, taking his goal/assist tally to five over the last three games, with a goal and an assist against Jeruselem, a goal against Raspotochje and now two assists here in Al-Tamazgha. This time, it was an inch perfect pass directly into the box, bisecting the defence and falling right to Smythe’s feet, whose deft touch took it away from Bourkia before the finishing touch was applied by the midfielder, calmly slotting the ball way out of the goalkeeper’s reach into the far corner of the net. At 2-0 up, the Sentients began to sit back and take time out of the game, knowing that they had a near unassailable advantage over their opponents. An advantage that looked more like three points with every second, every minute until, two minutes into stoppage time, Jeremy Onus’s corner found the head of Isabella Cross, who found the target to make it three - the winger’s first assist for his country.

And so the stage was set. Sylestone with twelve points, and the Commonwealth with ten. Whoever took the points away from Chamberley would go top on the verge of the halfway mark.

Zenic had been strong, Jeruselem put up a fight for an hour and even Raspotochje gave the Sentients a significant scare. But the Commonwealth of Baker Park, they were a different beast. Only once in their history had they failed to qualify for the World Cup - last cycle, when they were upset by the likes of Eshialand and Cardenao to finish outside the top two, sentencing them to their inaugural Cup of Harmony after fifteen times around.

Even two years ago, the Sentients probably wouldn’t have been a match for the Commonwealth, at least on paper. And now, with their shock failure to reach World Cup 95 and Sylestone’s unprecedented run on home soil to the quarterfinals, the Sentients were all of a sudden favourites to win the game, particularly in front of a full house in Chamberley. And did they do so, in their typical style: 1-0.

There are two types of 1-0 wins. There are the ones that are proper scraps that everyone seems to think every game that finishes 1-0 is, or there’s the Sylestone 1-0; ie, one that as soon as the goal was scored, there would be little doubt over who would be taking home the points. It’s rare enough in this modern world that a side plays so defensively, but even rarer do they play such a proper, out of possession, bus parking strategy rather than just a lame, boring sideways passing game. The win over Zenic was more in this category, although not as much as usual as the Survivors did create several genuine chances, but the game against Baker Park was not.

No, this was a proper scrapfest. In fact, the only real moment of beauty was Alexandra Arnold’s goal, putting on a burst of pace in a rare Sylestonean assault on Rod Callaway’s goal, and one that had plenty of personnel involved, too. Truly un-Sylestonean. This time, it was Jack Lawson with the assist, chipping the ball over the entire defence to Arnold’s barely onside run in behind, bringing the ball down with her chest and on the second bounce, smashing it through the tiny gap Callaway had left between himself and his near post.

That was in the 24th minute, and put the Sentients 1-0 up and five points clear at the top of their qualifying group. Two minutes later, it was almost 2-0 as Jack Ryland cut a swathe in the Commonwealth’s defence from the left wing, only to be stopped by a brilliant, last ditch tackle by CSKA Quebec’s Emily Bruce, keeping the deficit within reach.

From that point onwards, Sylestone would only record one more half chance - in the 67th minute when Charlotte Eastwood, surrounded by defenders after taking control of Hugo Mornington’s long ball forwards and without a teammate in sight, somehow got a shot from the edge of the box away, leaving Callaway scrambling as the ball missed his right post by a mere six inches.

At the other end of the pitch, Serena McDavid came the closest to putting the Commonwealth ahead in the 75th minute with an attempted chip shot into Ryan Macleay’s top left corner over the top of the entire Sylestonean defence, about twenty metres out. It was an audacious attempt, but the Euran-based forward nearly pulled off the impossible - the crossbar being all that was standing between the Arrosians and an equaliser.

Despite the audacity of McDavid, Eastwood and Ryland’s attempts, it was what was happening between both goalposts that caused the most discussion. Over the ninety minutes, the referee was made to give out seven yellow cards and crucially, one red to Matilda Molineux for an extremely reckless tackle with seconds left of stoppage time as the game reached its head, preventing the Commonwealth from one final attack. Even so, her efforts were applauded by the crowd as she walked off the field, fully knowing she wouldn’t be featuring in any of Sylesotne’s next three fixtures against the Union of Ventura, Zenic and Jeruselem.

Of those fixtures, the former two would be on the road, although with a bye between them. It means that as we wait for the next international break, the Sentients will sit five points clear, with an opportunity to extend that at the Union of Ventura - a side who do not have a point - before teams inevitably try and play catch up on matchday eight, for Sylestone’s bye.

With both Zenic and the Commonwealth of Baker Park as away fixtures coming up in the second half of qualifiers, who knows how pivotal this current lead might be. Points from either of those two games will be tough to come by, even with the Sentients quickly becoming the Survivors’ bogey team, while Jeruselem have successfully taken points from Sylestone in Sylestone before, and will be confident of doing so again. It may look good right now, but this group is still wide open - a couple of poor games, and the lead will dissipate very fast indeed.

Complacency has been the downfall of many a strong football team before. Let’s hope Sylestone won’t be joining that long list of names come the end of this qualification cycle.

Ten Years After - Chapter 2 (A City of Iron)

The next day I met up with Bess, and me, her, and Jamal travelled to Destin to help out her sister. Destin was a very interesting city. Nestled in the valleys of the Raeford River and its tirbutaries, Destin has been a steady economic prescense over the years. It is established as the place that produces most of the domestic and exported steel in Xanneria. While a lot of cities have a plant or two; Destin and by inheritence, the greater Raeford River Valley area are the big dogs in metals. It helped that in the western Xannerian cities formative years, Destin was also one of the few mining hubs in Xanneria as the mountains had been choc full with Iron. The Steel inustry started to slow down at the beginning of the 20th century with the iron mines started to dry up. It was only 30-40 years later they had a resurgence.

The drive between Switchback and Destin was one full of narrow two lane roads and a typical afair for any person> As it was mid spring it was also a trip marred by weather. Passing through the Raeford valley and the nooks and crannies of the watershed, you better like green! This trip is full of luscious green scenery and the area has a lot of tree lined hills and ridges. Combine that green with the aformentioned spring rains and a thin grey sky that still let planty of light in and you got my least favorite time of the year.

Thankfully the trip was not that bad. Mainly cause it was mearly 90 minutes from switchback to the warehouse where we were meeting the client. First off it turns out that we weren't backing up Bess, she had actually hired us cause one of her younger sisters was going through with a deal The Client turned out to be a company named Flying Horse Inc. Turns out theyw ere a part of a state run company in the Yak Empire in Arrossia> A few decades ago, the Empire had fough in a bloody civil war after a decade under Junta leaders. Companies like Flying Horse cropped up in the aftermath. The business model of Flying Horse was built around acquiring goods from what ever nation they had set up in and selling them back to the home land, usually doing so at the behest of a national or Municipal government. In fact, when I lived in Palace City, I had done business with them as we had sold them 50 of our prior generation of police vehicles.

I was very confused, why would there be a need for security if the deal was B2B?

Five wins from five matches to start the campaign and things are going rather as predicted for the currently number one ranked team in the sport, as the Marauders are making their way methodically through the group. It has been a fairly good display where the only complaint could be that the defense has not been as sharp as one would have liked with the change in formation from a three at the back to a four at the back. The change in formation was supposed to allow for a better defensive stability while still allowing for the fluidity in the attack that Vanorians are used to seeing, an unusual compromise coming from a Ko-oren manager but one that looked like it could suit the talent pool of the Empire. The fact that the defense still has a ways to go to improve to be the standard that which the Vanorian public is demanding of it shows that there is still room for improvement and fine tuning of the formation as well as the tactics employed, which should give great concern to the rest of the sport knowing that the Marauders have not yet hit their full stride and are still at a standard where they are breezing through a qualifying campaign.

A final test of the first half is the one that which in theory will be the hardest test until the last matchday of the campaign, that of course is a match at home against the second seed of the group in the form of the Rushmori giants of Eura. Despite recently having fallen on hard times, the Eurans have been putting up a fairly good showing in the first half with ten points from twelve games and still in the hunt of the group title or playoff position. Defeat away to Valentine Z last international window has seen them fall to third but they are only a point behind Valentine Z for that second spot and only five behind the Marauders despite their perfect record to start the campaign. A prolific offense has been the key point to them maintaining ground and keeping up the chase for the top two positions and their defense has been good enough, though they did concede three in their trip to Valentine Z that cost them the three points. A trip to the Empire is a bit more a stern test but it is likewise a more difficult challenge for the Marauders to face down than what has come before and would be a good measuring stick of how solid the team is before the next international window.

It is not the only game of the window for the Marauders however, as they have a rare treat of a pair of games at the Hatire Memorial for this upcoming window and the lack of travel should hopefully mean that the team is well rested and prepared for both of the upcoming matches. Home fixtures always have a bit of added comfort for one reason or another and that the side is going to be able to have two of them during a window is a luxury that is rarely afforded to a team during a qualification campaign and they would be best minded to make the most of such an opportunity. After the tilt with Eura, the Marauders will take on current sixth place in the table Gunnison and Telluride, who sit on four points and are likely out of the conversation for a top two spot already. What they can do is be able to play spoiler to the teams that are above them and are trying to fight for those two coveted positions that grant passage to the Finals and the playoffs which offer that second chance at booking passage. The side is clearly the superior team but they need to not have a let off after the game against Eura which will have higher stakes and intensity through the sheer talent gap, or lack therof, compared to the second match in the window.

There is mild concern that the side failed to really impress in their trip to Boring Paradise, relying on a brace from Imre Haaland on either side of the halftime whistle to ensure that they got the three points, whilst also unfortunately conceding a late goal to make things tense in the last quarter hour. Away trips have always been a bit of a hazard for the side and the last one does provide a bit of caution and takes some of the winds out of the sails of the side, although that the team was able to still come away with the three points with a rotated side does speak volumes. Whilst it was a tense affair, it provides the sort of experience and bleeding in of the depth in the team to ensure that if and when they are called upon again later in the campaign or even in the Finals if they make the twenty-six person roster, that they are ready and able to contribute. While players like Haaland are easily ready to do so, there are a few question marks among some more of the depth options and the game against Boring Paradise and likely the second tilt in the upcoming window provide avenues to test their mettle in an environment where the environment is conducive to such matters. Depth has been a bit of an issue at times and knowing who she can rely on during crunch time to make a difference off the bench could help Millet and the team finally get over the hump.

Independent Athletes from Quebec (IAQ) - World Cup 96 Team
WINDOW 4 - v. Vyktoria

- Beginning of communication.

Please note that for the second half of this qualification window, due to the Foreign Office requirement that prohibits Quebecois nationals including dual-nationals, from travelling into nations placed under Level Four - Do Not Travel without sufficient, one-month quarantine measure, there will be no regular IAQ delegation present to play an anon nation for home-and-away legs of this World Cup 96 qualification cycle.

Instead, eleven prisoners dressed in rainbow jumpsuits will be playing as IAQ on those matches, first away and then at home in their designated home venue at an oil rig located on international waters. There will be no Quebecois fans issued visa for away trip, or away fans flying into the designated home venue for the second leg.

End of communication. -

Three Weddings and a Funeral

PART 2 - First Wedding - 14 Karat Gold

The sun shone brightly over the Bitteroot Hill on the day of the wedding, accompanied by the sweet, autumn breeze that chose not to be brutal for the day, and that day alone. The wedding-goers, many of them of the local band, and others prominent people from either the bride or the groom's end, had been in the town since the start of the week, partly to attend the Friday afternoon's wedding ceremony but also to enjoy additional time off from the cities. The day's warmth was the kind that had brought out the most pleasant of demeanours in people, even more as they had come out in colourful, authentic regalia rich in colour, ornaments, as well as feathers and fabrics considered to be of the old-world.

The wedding itself was a scene that's best taken on long-takes, as Jean Helfrich Koa'aga'itöka and Isabelle Yoon would be married after several years of relationship and several days of internal ceremonies. In a highly-anticipated wedding that many had remarked in the local Bonneville area for years now, the faces would be replaced by that of joy in the daytime's colourful strokes as they, adhering to the groom's family whose ancestors' traditions predated that of any Shin-goryeoites, would follow the festivities. The chants would be sung for hours at pace faster and volume louder than usual to mark the occasion that have, fifteen years removed from then, truly marked the end of the clouds that plagued the Koa'aga'itökas for several decades to the point of near.

Many, both of the groom's indigenous aristocracy and the bride's (Korean) middle-class families, would attend, with both sides happy for the couple in their entrance into the matrimony. Both sides had their reasons, of course, with Jean being one of very few survivors of the family after the familial curse, and Isabelle also known for a temper befitting her intellect, many had considered this match to be a bit of miracle.

Perhaps fitting for the 'miracle man' who had miraculously survived after living most of his first twelve years in inexplicable medical conditions that had taken his father, grandmother, and most of the male members and some in-laws (including maternal grandfather, the late Don Helfrich) in the family, the wedding had an additional layer of intimacy and closure attached to the celebration. At the request of his great-grandfather overseeing the Bonneville region in the 102-year old band chief Claude Koa'aga'itöka, most of the three-days of celebrations were limited to the groom and the bride's family, with all participating members having to sign a non-disclosure contract. Some details would be given to the public, including the media, but otherwise even the friends and the locals, many of whom had known the Koa'aga'itökas for decades, would be left mostly in dark.

Still, Jean was a very likeable figure, a Bugil and then St. Croix-educated man who while holding job in Joongyeong had his intentions set on eventually returning home, and thus people found little reasons to complain. Most had their own recollections of either party, and they made sure to come out and celebrate. Now, as the vows were exchanged, songs sung and then bride kissed the groom, people would find themselves turning quickly to the reception, which was held at the band community hall that the chief Claude had made sure to renovate in grandeur fitting of the occasion the previous year. Full of food shared, gifts shared among the families, and the wealth shared out per the customs, the reception was in the full swing.

There were several primary groups one could identify. One had formed around the groom and his family, led by the Duke of Swangard, fellow chief and distant cousin of Christine II ranked fifth in the order of prominence. The second group, of the bride, a reasonably-sized group would consist of the bride's colleagues and friends, with most of them looking slightly older with the bride in her early thirties. The third group, that of the royalty, had been sprinkled across the floor, with the most evident example being the Queen Mother and Alexandre, the prince of Abitibi. It wasn't exactly by their choice that either had come to attend the wedding either, with Alexandre being asked to attend in place of his beloved great-uncle, the former Sea Lord Prince Laurent, and the Queen Mother in place of her son-in-law, Caspian of Cassadaigua, who had changed his plans to see his ailing mother in Cassie II.

It was a symbolic gesture, in many ways, with Prince Laurent's marriage to late Katherine de Kitemah, the late Lord Swangard's eldest child and great-aunt of Samuel the current Duke. With his naval career mostly spent with the Salamantic Fleet in particular the Tomcat school, and his marriage to the highest-ranked noble house in the far west, Prince Laurent had held great roles with the royal family out west for decades. His ties to his late mother, beloved Queen Nathalie who had spent most of her last four decades at S'Gaang Gwaay house, had also meant that in some ways, this was a gesture of trust placed on the young Prince.

Not that this particularly brought much joy, even if he was glad for the trust placed, for 20-year old Alexandre, as he felt greater comfort in the presence of his grandmother, Queen Mother Elisabeth, while also be disappointed to miss two days of class ahead of mid-term examinations at the Royal Naval Academy on the other side of country. The young prince, who had started to look more and more like his grandfather, a man of distinct, warrior-esque appearance, each and every passing year, was welcomed by many guests who made sure to greet and pay tribute to him, as well as to his family upon noticing the pink ribbon placed on his bracelet.

But he, three hours behind his classmates in Dongnae-Halifax county, Alexandre felt his presence to be rather customary and unexciting, however, and he kept his mind mostly in the clouds of longing as he would find himself mostly in the company of Heo Seung-Geon, who he had looked up to dating back to their juvenile days in Concord Heights. They, finding each other in a relative position of assurance, would start discussing the latest of local news, about the death of the local VousTuber, a fake shaman with reported ties to certain prosecutors and Moogoongwha Party MPs, found burned to death inside his crypt in Bonneville three nights ago.

'All the police seems to be here,' said Alexandre, as he dryly remarked about the heavy police presence, which they could see no less than fifty present for the ceremony and the reception combined, in the wedding. 'Whose idea was this? Please don't tell me this happened because a psuedo-shaman got burned alive to death last weekend because that would be the lamest way to bring the entire city's police department on emergency shift here.'

'Hard to say, Alexandre,' Seung-Geon said, the groomsman choosing to avoid himself from saying too much about what had exactly happened that night. I'm sure that your and the Queen Mother alone would have brought twenty of them regardless, and this place is such a sleepy town, an oasis of blue in the Red Sea, that this would have been the biggest event the Bonneville Pee-Dee (Police Department) would have to worry for the year.'

'I presume so,' Alexandre answered. 'Never a good thing trying to defraud people with fake-shamanism, as granny would always say. You know, the Queen Mother.' They were now watching the people dance on the main floor, still some distance away from the Queen Mother who was quietly brooding on a table with one of her closest confidantes in Seung-Geon's grandfather, Dr. Heo Dong-Soo 'the younger'.

While Seung-Geon felt that neither of them had much sense about who may have caused it, or what had exactly led into the overnight burning of the crypt on the night of the bachelor party, he found in it a perfect timing to change the topic of the conversation. 'Are you actually going to move to Tezia after you graduate? As you have suggested the last summer, there or wherever really,' Alexandre opened his mouth again, the sudden burst of question suggesting his emotions towards the news.

'It is anything but set, though I'd ask you not to be too surprised.' Seung-Geon paused, upon being reminded about what they had talked about when he visited the Prince, who he had made sure to visit when they were both in Concord Heights for the International Basketball Championships 39 final. 'You know, it is indeed true that the men of this family had ended up abroad or away for much of their twenties and thirties. Grandpa had spent much of his time in Petrograd for his doctorate and had nearly died at twenty-one, and the great-grandpa had been jailed various times under radical activism and republican charges. Not to mention the old man.'

The solemness of Seung-Geon's voice was reflected into Alexandre's face. 'The greater tasks wait at home, however, in Joongyeong where you belong,' said Alexandre. 'Since when have the Quebecois orchestras been so surefire about the trombonists? Let's not kid ourselves here.'

They would talk a bit more about his plans, those that had involved a bit more careful planning of his career. It was clear from the beginning that Seung-Geon's plans, while primarily oriented towards his musical concerns, also seemed to have come out of his desire to be away from his homeland that he, at times, may have gotten too comfortable towards. This, at the same time, was tried to be explained with the parallel that Alexandre, who was himself in flying colours at the naval academy, would soon be bound for an eventual placement at the RQN's Naval Aviator Corps, to the existence that would likely mean extensive assignments abroad and at home.

Eventually, after about fifteen minutes of conversation, Seung-Geon looked back at him, giving a glare that is both kind and affectionate at the same time as their amity had been, even if slight tints of jealousy and fear may have come off on Alexandre's end. 'I will try to understand your frustration,' Seung-Geon answered, giving a light nod of acknowledgment. 'But I am not gone forever, as any orchestral musician would, and at the pinnacle I will return to complete the full circle.'

'I will consider this your word of honour, if you do go by this time next year,' said Alexandre, as he gave a quick look back at Seung-Geon before deciding to give quick tribute to the Queen Mother. 'I'll be back, just have to say few words to the Queen Mother. Don't go anywhere.' He said, before making his way to the other side of the floor.

At that point, Seung-Geon quietly moved his way to the bar counter, which was located on the other side of the floor. It was decently occupied, with several others also wanting a drink after a long, hot afternoon wedding, and Seung-Geon could find himself relating to it after how tiring the conversation with Alexandre had turned out. Good lord, thought Seung-Geon, who felt fortunate that he, while noticeable enough with his height and sharing a bit of facial features from both his parents, whom most people in this community hall knew, was in a space where he alone did not generate enough social interests for people to bother him much about.

This was a fortunate sign for the usually-private individual who, while not exactly the one to open his mouth outside (and even less so in recent year or two), knew what the people were speculating. He's heard plenty about them anyway, whether it be over his uncle (succession saga regarding the Strathcona Trust, partly due to his parents' H&N Group stakes), his wife (the Dreyfus-Millikens have not always had the best reputation politically, especially among his own circles), or a possible bee, and he was getting sick of it. It wasn't so much that the rumours themselves had bothered him so much, but they seemed to have taken the most minor of tints or ideas and overblow it. For one, it was only recently that 'The Latest Whistledown' had speculated him being on a date with Kennedy Rice of last two Ghostbastards films over a photo taken when they were casually reading few lines ahead of her audition with Nakhimovsky's long-overdue Flume, while some of his inner circle were quietly speculating about him and Claire Lundrigan, whom he had last seen when him and his father, Myeong-Shin, had come to see the Lundrigans in Silverhills...

'Bride or groom?' asked the mellow voice of a young woman, as Seung-Geon would find himself broken out of the spur of thoughts he's held inside his head. Immediately at that moment, Seung-Geon turned, only to see a perfectly beautiful woman her age stand before her, casually holding a half-filled glass of champagne. With a pastel blue dress framing her light figure, combined with her straw-coloured hair and emerald earrings carved to art-deco style that was famous over a century ago, and would make its return during the early Christinian era, she evoked a look of silent depth under the simplistic appearance the same way Seung-Geon did.

'Groom, a groomsman if I were to be exact,' Seung-Geon answered in his Royal Pronunciation (RP) English, honed to the fine form. 'I've known the groom since our schoolboy days, two years apart. You?'

'Bride,' the woman said with a light smirk lifted to her on the left. 'Isabelle's my brother's childhood friend, and she was also my babysitter.' She quietly gave a light look at her brother, the current Viscount Montrose, as he was busy chatting with his friends. The way they were dressed, with good number of ornaments and how antiquated (or vintage?) they looked, suggested they were likely of upper class background. 'As you could imagine over there, they go back ages. What's your name by any chance?'

On normal occasions Seung-Geon would have assumed that she was purposefully being rude, but the light roll she gave to her eyes suggested him otherwise. 'Heo Seung-Geon,' he said. 'or as I would like to say, a rather unremarkable Trombonist studying at the Conservatoire, whose father happens to be Mr. Baseball, whose mother some volleyball coach, and whose friends you end up helping out from time to time.' He then suddenly blushed, and felt his mouth having hard time to say what would be an easy question to ask. 'But what is the use of talking about this boring me? I would like to know about you, rather.'

It took a solid second, and stoppage of time felt longer than the start of a war, before she would resume. 'Adeline Yi, though some people remember me as Lord Bathurst's daughter,' she said, her face also feeling somewhat uncomfortable mentioning about her status. 'But as with you, I prefer to be known as some boring resident at the Hôpital-Poesy in Joongyeong, where patients would not ask about life back home. For my sake, mostly.'

'I could relate to that,' Seung-Geon said, almost immediately agreeing to self-deprecation. 'This is also why I'll be moving away for few years, perhaps even longer, as I aim to pursue higher goals in a career abroad, with the finest orchestras out there, those that you would see and hear of occasional visits on homesoil. The hopes are that I would return only when I'm needed to, until the time is right.'

To his surprise, her face was not filled with that of intrigue or amusement, but rather that of disappointment as her expressions added a line of worry or anxiety to it. 'That's a shame,' Adeline said, as she caught Seung-Geon, who was previously confident about his decision, in a light shake. 'Hopefully this won't be the last time we'll meet, if this proves to be true.'

A brief moment of silence followed, only to be accompanied by them staring into each other bypassing all sound, before he eventually opened his mouth. 'Definitely not,' Seung-Geon answered, perhaps adding a little bit more force in an attempt to show resolute. 'I cannot imagine it the other way.'

But the way he had said it, Seung-Geon knew fucked up. By now he, for some reason, was feeling the time slow down as they stood and continue to say relatively little, perhaps a sign to which she had caught his eyes in simplistic manners a man and a woman would first meet on a transcontinental train carriage, but also a sign that he was running on borrowed time. Something had to be said, and quickly.

'You know, I know of this staring reminds me of a story, of a lad who met his lass on the Acadianan Cafe on a rainy thursday afternoon...'

"The side can not help but seem to get in there own way, yet another scoreless draw against a team that they were clearly the better side against but were bereft of the sort of finishing that is needed to grab the three points. You add those four dropped points to their tally and they would only be a point back from atop the group and not looking like they are about to have a second straight non-qualifying performance. It is those sort of outings why the team has been faltering in the Copa Rushmori and now why they are seemingly regressing to a team that any team could come into the Stade de Torgos and pulls points from when it used to be the sort of fortress teams hated to have to visit. The national team is on decline, someone has to say it, and the future of the team does not look any better with how shallow the national pool currently sits."

"I think we can trace the problem back to the decision to quit submitting teams to the Di Bradini Cup, it used to be the place where prospects would be picked out from the academies and tested in an intense environment and more often than not the Young Wanderers would emerge out of their group and usually make it past the first knockout round. The PFA has not submitted a team to the competition for a few editions now and it just happens to coincide with the national team regressing and the talent pool for the national team seemingly at one of its most thin and shallow points in recent memory. That can not be a coincidence, the two have to be linked in some way and there needs to be more pressure put on the PFA to make sure that we are entering into the tournament or maybe that U18 one if they have given up on the DBC. Youth football is how the Wanderers were able to become one of the best teams in Rushmore and even in the sport for a little while, we need to get back to our roots if we are to prevent stagnation and regression more than what has already sat in."

"While I agree that the performances against Cardenao and Doubeia are underwhelming, as was the defeat at home to Quebec, it is not all doom and gloom as though it might seem that way. The side has been in poor positions near the halfway point of a qualification campaign before and found their way either to the top of the group or into the playoffs and making their way into the Finals from there, though the playoffs do give people a lot of anxiety and dread for good reason. The team takes on Amenria who has managed their way into first place in the upcoming window and it is their only game of the window, also having their second bye of the campaign to come alongside the game. The game is also going to be at the Stade de Torgos and while the team has not had the best of times at the home ground in their first two showings their, we as the fans need to make it a place where the side feels confident and overwhelming against whatever the quality of the opposition is. We need to be singing our songs and chants and not rely upon the players to provide the atmosphere for the ground but we provide them the atmosphere that they can then turn into their advantage. A win puts the team two points back of second place, perhaps first as well if Quebec is unable to find victory."

"Bold of you to assume that we are going to be able to defeat a team that currently has only dropped points in a single game and that was in a draw with the Quebec side, which also is the only game which the Quebec side has failed to pickup the full three points. The Wanderers are in a bad position even if they theoretically control their own destiny. Say they win this game against Amenria, they will only be two points behind but it is more likely than not that Quebec goes on and wins their game and then both sides are likely to put up three points again in the second game of the window where the side has a bye, putting the team even further back. It would take a full on collapse from either side to then allow the Wanderers to get back in position and for the team to also fail to be upset again as they have already been thrice in the first half of the campaign. It requires a magnitude of things to go the way of the Wanderers for them to make a playoff position, as competing for the group title is now completely out of the picture."

"If you do not have hope that things can turn out well for you, then why do you watch the games, why do you support the team? You have to have a little faith that things will come up good else not just football but the world itself will be a nightmare to fathom and sit through in the day in and day out minutia that is life. Have faith in the side, have faith that good things come to good people, and do not give into despair even when it seems to surround and overwhelm. The sacred fire burns eternally as should our hope."

BBC OFFICIAL REVIEW: Halfway Through the Qualifiers

By Football Correspondent Gary Obamaniker

Chromia, Chromatika - After a thrilling 0-0 draw with Chromatika at the Capitalizt Dome, featuring an outstanding performance from the ever-reliable Dwayne Obama to halt the high-flying Chromatik offence, the Obama Carers will be taking a well-deserved break next week due to having a bye. While the Obamen sit at the top of the pile at the moment, they will be placed second next week due to the Chromatika-Abanhfleft matchup taking place.

At the moment, it's tight at the top, with top-seeded Chromatika steamrolling the competition as expected. They sit one point behind us, but comeback kings Abanhfleft are trailing close behind, being only two points behind us despite entering the competition as the fifth seed. Third-seeded Aleirave are in a distant fourth place after three losses on the bounce. They are eight whole points behind us and all but eliminated from automatic entry to the World Cup finals.

As expected, the Obaman defence continues to steal the show with their impeccable slide tackles, close-up man-marking, perfectly timed tactical fouls when the ref isn't looking, intimidating appearances and fighting spirit. So far, the formidable defensive line of Nossu Obamadamus, Bark Obamallama and Barack Denovitz has managed to shut down almost all of their opponents, with only Saint Eleanor conceding fewer goals so far. The Obaman defence has also conceded the least for any team that has played six games so far, with Dwayne Obama's heroics securing clean sheets from barrages of shots from desperate strikers. The Obaman offence has also delivered at its crucial moments, with Lily Chobamya's set pieces combining perfectly with Fred Olibama's flopping and diving to create vital game-winners against teams such as Lisander and Aleirave.

The Team to Beat: Chromatika

They're probably getting kind of annoyed by now. For the second time in as many cycles, the Obama Carers have held Chromatika to a 0-0 draw on home territory. With the previous occasion infamously propelling the Obamen to an improbable 2-point lead at the top of their group stage with one game left, we can only hope that this draw will be as crucial to our success this cycle (so long as we don't bottle it by getting smoked by mirror images of ourselves). However, with Chromatika projected to retake that #1 spot and sweet automatic qualification berth by next week, another draw will not be enough. Victory is necessary, at all costs.

But is it possible? Maybe. The Obamen are the only team this cycle so far to keep a clean sheet against Chromatika, thanks to Dwayne Obama's aforementioned acrobatics keeping threats like Lavrentiy Xuen-Zhukov at bay. However, we didn't exactly put in a stellar performance; even our best defenders struggled to keep up with the pace and strength of their opponents, essentially handing them the ball on each play and hoping for the best. The Chromatik defence was also at the top of their game that day, and they avoided making the mistakes other teams made that allowed us to sneak in a goal or two past them. Our rematch will be attended in full force by esteemed dignitaries and intimidating prisoners at the Fort Obama Supermax stadium, who should provide enough intimidation to get Chromatika to crack under pressure and get sloppy. Hopefully, the game against Chromatika being our last game of the round robin (and hence, the last chance to get some points on the board) will also motivate our players to give it all that they've got. Well, that's not a lot, but it's enough.

The Team to Try and Beat This Time: Equestria

Magical ponies are unusual. Magical ponies who play football and have a World Cup win under their [strikethrough]belts[/strikethrough] saddles(?) are bizarre. Magical ponies who do all that and are still considered pushovers by amateur footballers from West Barack and East Obama are insane. Perhaps it is this paradoxical level of complacency that led to the biggest sin of all: conceding a goal. Yes, our solitary goal conceded so far was an equaliser from Equestria, throwing away a win that would have put us head and shoulders above the rest of the teams at this stage of the qualification campaign. Yes, it was a foul. Yes, Barack Denovitz just had to trip someone over "for a laugh." How did you guess?

As Equestria entered the World Cup cycle as the 100th ranked team and haven't exactly been lighting things on fire since holding us to a draw, we can only hope the rematch at the Pentagram Underworld will allow us to correct our previous mistakes. We should enter the next game with confidence, but not too much confidence. Competitiveness, but not too much competitiveness. Aggression, but not too muc- yeah, you get the point.

The Surprise Package: Abanhfleft

This is certainly a full circle moment for the Obamen. Four cycles ago, we were making our debut in the World Cup qualifying group stage. We were heavily spanked (we foolishly refused to play to our strengths by emphasising some actual offences, a mistake we'd never make again), but there were some memorable victories: including a 2-1 victory over Abanhfleft. Now, all this time later, even with tumultuous shifts in lineups and coaches, one thing remains constant: our ability to grab a victory over Abanhfleft, which we handily achieved in the opening game. Pinpoint passing by the maestro himself, Wolfgang Obamadeus-Mozart, and precise penalties by Lily Chobamya gave us an ez win.

That is, of course, what I would have said right after the game, but things are different now. They're scary now. Since their defeat against us, Abanhfleft have roared back to win four in a row and are hot on our tail. If they grab a victory over Chromatika in their next game, they could even leapfrog us to the #1 spot. That new manager bounce is real, and it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. They've scored the joint-highest number of goals in the group and will be looking to add even more names to the scoresheet for our fast-approaching rematch. This Abanhfleft team is making some serious waves as a fifth-seeded team and could provide some painful payback and snatch our chances at qualifying for the World Cup finals away from us. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Sonnel is the place.

Trouble Brewing
Bostopia 4-4 Eshialand
Eshialand 1-1 Sargossa

"So, King William, now that you've experienced Union Stadium in both Vaynorth and Lahaira, how do you feel about the stadium? Is it really the next new thing like it was hyped up to be?" Josh Seametzle asked the king after the both of them had gotten home to mainland Eshialand.

I really wanna trash it I really wanna trash it...

For the king, he knew his experiences in Union Stadium were... less than ideal. What Tony Beaujoleil had built wasn't everything he had promised, now was it? Project Upsilon wasn't fully ready, so while yes, the ship did float, it wasn't exactly the smoothest experience. The travel from Vaynorth to Lahaira, while it was okay as far as interregional boat travel goes, still left a lot to be desired, and the fan experience... to put it mildly, could've been a lot better.

However, he knew better than to look a gift horse in the mouth, especially with someone as volatile as Beaujoleil involved. So, he would just bullshit some kind of positive answer about it and hopefully Josh would publish something positive, right?

"I enjoyed my experience," he said after a good think, "definitely one of the most unique stadium experiences you're going to have in Eshialand."

One week later...

"Uh, Will?" Michael Wylen, the king's best friend and assistant, asked him.
"Hm? You sound concerned about something..."
"Well... have you seen the cover of the Eshialand City Investigator?"
"No..."

Michael handed the king the magazine and he read it in horror.

"'Union Stadium unimpressive, according to King...' what the fork?"
"I have no clue where they got that from, honestly..."
"I think I may know..."

"Josh?"
"Hey, William! How've ya been, it's been a while since we've had a nice chat off the record!"
"Yeah, about that record... what the heck is going on in the Investigator?"
"I never chatted with them so I wouldn't really know!"
"Just read it..."

Josh looked up the headline and his jaw absolutely dropped. "What in the--"
"Yeah, I have no clue who submitted this, but whoever they are is gonna get a piece of my mind!"
"Alessia Markowiak... I think I might know who this 'anonymous' reporter is..."

Josh hung up on the king and dialed a number he hadn't dialed in ages. "Josh?" a familiar voice said over the line.
"Well, if it isn't Alana Markai..."
"You don't seem too happy to talk..."
"I was just reading the Investigator today and I was a little surprised when I saw the name of their 'anonymous' submitter..."
"Josh, don't you remember? I quit news reporting, I don't care about all that anymore! I started my fresh start at Jim Morton's, I thought you'd recall..."

She was right; she hadn't touched any news publications in three years at this point. She was getting clean, sober, and out of the public eye. "So wait," Josh asked, "why is this reporter's name so similar to yours?"
"They've always parodied the names of real reporters when covering stories like this, something about 'if we do this then legally it's a parody', or something like that. The number of times I saw them use 'Jason Lakemetzger' is absolutely incredible!"
"So what you're saying is I have to contact the Investigator staff themselves..."
"HA, good luck doing that, those guys have never talked to anyone from the outside no matter how much you ask them to. I know, I've tried a few times... the number of times they wrote slander about me is just silly at this point."
"To be fair you were an easy target back in the day."
"Oh shush... anyway, my shift is starting soon, I'll get back to ya later. See ya!"

click!

Just as Josh hung up on the king, he received a phone call from an oh-too-familiar number.

"Shit shit shit..." he said before answering, "this can't possibly go well..."

"William???" Tony said once he picked up.
"Hi Tony..."
"What's this coming out of the Investigator??? You didn't like Union Stadium??"
"No no no, it's not that at all, you see... they were probably just taking one of my clips and taking it way out of context or something just to drive sales, they do that all the time!"
"...really? That's what you're going with?"
"It's true! In fact, I've got the best sports journalist in the country investigating it, I promise we'll get to the bottom of this soon enough."
"Really? Investigating the Investigator?"
"I'm sorry for my terrible puns..."
"Yeah I'm not exactly amused..."

Sometimes, when you try to lighten things up with humor, it hits... and other times it just angers the other person even more.

"Again, very sorry. I promise we'll be looking into things and figuring out who published this... there will be consequences."
"Alright, thank you anyway... see you later, once this is resolved."
"See ya!"

click!

Just then, Josh called the king back. "Hey Will, uh, small problem..." he said.
"Oh no..."
"Yeah, it wasn't Alana, and apparently, it'll be next-to-impossible to find out who it actually was."
"Oh no..."
"You see, that's where you come in... a threat from the king tends to be enough to make next-to-impossible things happen!"
"Well, it's always worth a shot I guess..."
Anything I say is IC unless proven otherwise by a court of law.

The Beaucester Gazette
Elmyia Decamp

Porras seeks quiet after consecutive defeats and media storms

As you take the train east through Elmyia you pass quite the array of landscapes in short order. From the imposing concrete towers of outer Mosfleet, through the shabby scrub between it and Beaucester, through the grandeur of the capital. You then pass through more badlands and the blight on the landscape that is Campeto. But past this there is first the central highlands, a series of undulating peaks, occasionally capped by a dusting of snow, before you then hit the greenery of the east of the island. Lush, verdant and damp, this area of the country swells in the summer as the wealthy citizens of Beaucester decamp from the searing heat. Pau Porras seems to have decided that a move to this relaxed corner of the island might be what is required to get Elmyia back on track.

It has been the toughest run in years for Elmyia in qualifying, two monumental defeats were followed by a searing interview from Vita Speight. At that point it felt like she was putting the boot in.

Both matches produced the same result and, interestingly, against two sides playing much the same formation. Porras' own system seemed to struggle up against the 3-5-2s of Vdara and the Holy Empire. Elmyia's own 3-4-2-1 looks good on paper for facing such a system, the two tens should be able to drop back and create overloads in the middle, or stretch the play out wide. In reality, Froggatt's own positional indiscipline cost Elmyia dearly.

Going to Vdara away and Elmyia did manage to hold the lion's share of possession. They were outdone, however, by the collective work rate of the opposition midfield and wing-backs. Athanas and Le Brun were effective in blunting Elmyia's own attempts to play down the wings, Katsouranis and Rossi both found themselves hounded out of the game. Going in the other direction and they found plenty of joy in the spaces wide of Elmyia's centre-backs. Punched three times before the break on the counter, having taken the lead through an early (soft) penalty, Elmyia were down and out before half-time.

Hosting the Holy Empire, Elmyia hoped to bounce back, playing a squad of seemingly hastily assembles xenophobic clowns. Yet their distaste for foreigners did not seem to lead to hubris on the pitch. Unlike in the previous fixture, Elmyia barely held the ball, yet they could do little on the counter. Again a first half deluge seemed to sink Porras' side before they could get going, 3-0 up with a Bojo brace and it was again an exercise in damage control.

Froggatt seems to come out of this pair of fixtures particularly poorly. Getting shunted to attacking midfield was always going to be a risk with a player who tries so much on the ball. Coughing up the ball in central areas was the starting point for three opposition moves leading to a goal. It would be a stretch to argue that she dropped a pair of catastrophic performances, a goal in the first game and an assist in the second remain to her credit. Yet there is a sense that she struggles to fit into a system at times. There also remains the argument that she tends to slow the team on the counter, taking too many touches and lacking the top speed to motor ahead of chasing opposition midfielders.

Porras was tetchy in his press conferences, continuing to bemoan the politics that keeps three players out of the squad, in addition to the shorter qualifying campaigns. "I try to craft a team, and they give me no time. We cannot play the way we want to in these circumstances. One error in this campaign, we are gone." And he may now have a mountain to climb.

Worse was to follow with Speight's interview, which truly crushed hopes of reconciliation. She remained defiant, hinting at "personal disagreements" with some players in the setup. She reserved her harshest judgement for those still signed to Hellenic, "there are people I thought better of, people like Maria [Grosso] who I thought had a stronger moral compass. It's not like a normal rivalry, they're paid in blood money. I cannot think of playing with them again."

So, on to Estdalle. Porras has commandeered the perennial yo-yo team's facilities, and whilst they might not have the glitz of the FF's own centre near the capital, they are far away from the hubbub currently surrounding the team. A century ago it took days for news from the capital to reach this area. Even now, it will take a journalist the best part of the day to make the round trip to this quiet market town.

This might well be a moment of maximum danger for Porras in the job, something which possibly shows just how far he has raised the bar for himself. In quieter surroundings the squad must now hope that it can put in the work to bring performances back up to scratch, and keep alive their dreams of reaching a third consecutive world cup.

JOSIFOVO REMAINS ON TOP AHEAD OF GAME AGAINST ZWANGZUG

The game against the United States of Devonta saw the Zlatni Lavovi focused on their game and the tactics of the coaches. A comfortable 3-1 victory sees Josifovo on top of the group, being one of the few unbeaten sides as we are approaching half-way. A lead that has increasingly become more important as the next game is against Zwangzug in a do or die match. The Zlatni Lavovi are going to the game in Eglantine Park with one purpose in mind and that is to escape from the jaws of the beast with the best possible outcome, whether it comes in the form of another upset or even a draw.

As for the match against Devonta, there were a few standouts, such as the fact that a goal was scored by a player in each outfield position. Nusret Mehić to make it 1-0 with a long-range curved shot, a Petko Karandzhulov header to make it 2-0 at half-time and a Dukagjin Bajrami penalty to make it 3-1 and lock the game. This victory is one of the most important ones for Josifovo, as it brings the side one step closer to qualification as the matchdays pass. Despite maintaining a safe distance from the teams 3rd or below, the focus is now at maintaining the top spot.

As this victory was important, Josifski fans lit up flares and smokes to celebrate the occasion in a packed Arena Josifski Rat. In an act of solidarity, coaches of all ethnicities were seen embracing each other, a rare such act between people so much in the public eye. Could a sports team really unify the nation better than any and all politicians and treaties could? We are reaching an era where this could be possible.

Lastly, confidence and optimism among players is at an all-time high. This was prevalent during a post-match interview involving scorer of the 3rd goal Dukagjin Bajrami, who has been in top form in the black-and-red and was seen as saying: "Never in my career have I seen a team so united, so compact and so strict to adherence to the rules of the game. I have faith in our abilities and even though we are a small side, we can do big things. Have faith in us, everyone, from Josifski to Kicuvski, Juzunski and fellow Kombetare, we are all one now."

RPs YOU MAY WANT TO READ FOR CONTEXT
This will likely be the first of two or three roleplays detailing what happened on the night of Tumbra's 2037 federal election. I promise you do not need to read any of the roleplays to understand this one. For roleplays talking about the election...

THE UNITED PARTY LEADERSHIP ELECTION
Ides: An enterprising reporter uses her charm to find out about a plot to spill the Prime Minister.
Two Conspirators: Lawrence Newell and Max Young finalise their deal for a leadership primary.
Merger: Newell becomes PM, the Liberal Party dies, and the United Party is born.
Primary and Debate: Joined by a surprise third competitor, the United Party debates amongst itself.
Leader: The United Party elects its prime ministerial candidate.

The below three RP lines take place at about the same time.
THE DIRGE OF STEPHEN WILLIAMS
Spilled: A Prime Minister who has won three elections is spilled.
Removal: Bereft of allies in his old party, a former Prime Minister is unceremoniously removed from the ballot.
Holdout: Now free of party politics, a former Prime Minister decides to take one last stand.

INFIDELITY
Tube: On a train, someone passes Jennifer Lee some information.
Affair: Jennifer Lee parses through information, and finds something damaging.
Consequences: Max Young's worst nightmare comes true.

THE EIGHT-WEEK CAMPAIGN
Dissolution: An eight-week campaign is called.
The First Debate and The First Debate: Results: The campaign narrows to be United-on-Labour, to the chagrin of the minor party leaders.
Policy: The early tone of the campaign is set: Labour has policy suggestions, but the United Party spends all its time rebutting them.
Negative: The campaign takes a negative turn.
Polls: One party creeps ahead in polls.
Illness: The Leader of the Opposition is taken ill.
The Second Debate: In a one-on-one debate, Max Young is judged to have won.
Polls (II): The polls narrow again, as the health scare and a strong debate performance have an impact.
Bombshell: A final bombshell rocks the campaign; the Northlands try to make themselves relevant.

ELECTION NIGHT, PART ONE — 9.55pm to 12.01am

TBC Broadcasting House, Straton

The theme tune of the election plays.

Dan Jacobs: Good evening, everyone, and welcome to the TBC Broadcasting House in Straton for coverage of the results of the 2037 federal election. It's been a long campaign — at eight weeks, I'm sure we've all been through a lot of politicking over the past two months, but it will all be over soon. But before that, we've got one more poll — and we promise it'll be the last one before the counting begins. In five minutes' time, we'll be able to show you the result of our exit poll, which will be the first indication of how nearly 90 million Tumbrans have casted their votes. I'm joined by the TBC's Chief Political Correspondent, Timothy Poole, as well as Professor Stephen Brown from the University of Nantwich, who will be providing expert analysis of the results as they go on.

Timothy Poole: It's been a campaign of twists and turns; one might say that this election has gone on for nearly eight months, what with the country being in campaign mode before that. It's looking likely that it'll be a two-horse race to the top; but even then, nobody's really sure who will come out on top. Will Bertram Andrews' health scare or Max Young's alleged infidelity weigh on the voters' minds more? Or will it be Labour's policy-heavy campaign, or United's rebuttals, which ensure their win?

Prof. Stephen Brown: One thing we've got to look out for tonight is that the early vote might very well lean more to United than Labour — not only are United voters more likely to vote from home, but those votes were cast before the final twist in the campaign on Monday morning. It'll be a very interesting campaign in terms of preferences and flows as well; and it looks set to be a very interesting election night as well.

Dan Jacobs: In our magic room, we're joined by radio presenter Will Byrne, who will help to illustrate the big picture in his room of green screens.

Will Byrne: This room has seen plenty of fancy graphics over the years, but this year we'll be focusing on two. One is this big wall of sixty Labour target seats that they'll be hoping to take in order to win government; the other is the swingometer, which will track swing between the two major parties. On the ground, we've got a blank map of Tumbra — who knows how it'll be filled in this time?

Dan Jacobs: And to look at results on a more micro level, Mona Chang at the big screen.

Mona Chang: This election isn't just one race, but six hundred and fifty individual races that will determine the future of the country we all live in. When our exit poll comes in, we'll be properly able to show you our forecasts for each and every seat in this country on this big screen, from Harren to Pesvern; but you'll be able to do so too, by joining us online.

Dan Jacobs: And up on the second floor of our election studio, our resident interviewer, Leslie Reynolds.

Leslie Reynolds: Politicians tend to say a lot of things, and they'll be trying to say tons of things tonight too. I'll hopefully be able to prise some actual answers out of them by asking me questions; and hopefully they'll give me some actual answers too.

Dan Jacobs: And all around the country, at the counts of major political figures — at Carrington, where Max Young is standing, Serrapince, for Bertram Andrews, Holsworth for Lawrence Newell, southern Straton for Michael Berkeley and Johanna Browne; and deep in Clearmont for Justin Spearing — we'll be bringing you all the important results as they come in. But first, our exit poll. Instead of asking people how they've voted, we've chosen to ask people up and down the country who they've voted for. We asked nearly twenty thousand people to fill in a mock ballot for us; and we hope they've been honest.

Prof. Stephen Brown: The exit poll has been conducted for TBC, Aurora, and the NBS by CampbellStewart; it's the most definitive poll of the election, and has rarely — if ever — gotten things wrong. But there are words of caution this time, however; the substantial early vote might favour the United Party, and things in general are so finely-tuned that the result may still go either way. Take this as our best effort, but not as gospel.

Dan Jacobs: If this were entirely accurate then there wouldn't be any need to vote! But as the clock nears ten, and the polls close — but if you're still in line, you can still vote — we'll be giving you the final poll of this campaign.

A countdown reaches zero.

Image

Dan Jacobs: It's ten o'clock; and here it is. Our projection is that this election will produce a hung parliament, with Labour as the largest party on 320 seats, just 6 short of a majority, way up from 285 they had last time. The United Party, in its first election foray, down to 305, losing 22 seats. The rest of the parties are quite some way behind. Alliance on 14, down 7; the Moderates dipping into the single digits, with only 7 seats; if this exit poll is right, they'll be looking to lose half their caucus. The Social Democrats on three, holding all their seats; and Others on 1, which should be Stephen Williams in Yarwood beating his United-sponsored challenger.

Timothy Poole: My immediate reaction to the poll, Dan, is that Labour have essentially won the election if this poll is entirely accurate; they'll have more than enough votes to form a government with the Alliance, which will quite likely be more than happy to form a government with Labour to keep the United Party out.

Dan Jacobs: Mona?

Mona Chang: It's a stunning result, and it's actually quite decisive if this poll is dead accurate, as Tim says. Putting the seat projections aside for one moment, let's look at the projected share of the first-preference votes. We've got the SDP on 1.2%, the Moderates on 6.8%, the Alliance on 7.5% — which is a massive drop for them, considering they won 13.4% last time out — and then Labour and United are neck-and-neck. But Labour are slightly ahead, Dan — this exit poll puts them on 42.2%, while United are on 42.0%. And that translates to a two-party preferred estimation of Labour 50.9%, United 49.1%; which is right in majority government territory for Labour.

Dan Jacobs: What I'm more surprised about is the Moderates...

Mona Chang: You're right. The Moderates have indeed increased their share of the vote from 6.1% in 2033, but look set to lose 7 seats. The thing about the Moderates is that they're rather inefficient in converting votes to seats, and three-quarters of their whole caucus have seats held on two-party preferred majorities of 5% or less. At the beginning of the campaign there were some polls that projected the Moderates to lose more than 7 — one poll had them on just 2 seats, down 12 — but they've since stabilised their position.

Dan Jacobs: Well, it seems to be an election where voters have flocked to the major parties — surprising, considering that both parties haven't exactly had stellar campaigns. I seem to recall the criticism of Labour's campaign being that it was too policy-heavy, and there was that major health scare?

Timothy Poole: And United spent too much time rebutting Labour than focusing on its own campaign, and its campaign message was muddled — seemed to be presenting itself as the party of both continuity and change. I'm more surprised that the minor parties didn't pick up more votes. We're headed for one of the smallest crossbenches in Tumbran history.

10.25pm

Leslie Reynolds: ...so what you are suggesting, Ms. Wilson, is that you could still cling on to power? Despite the result of our exit poll and early counting showing votes aren't actually in the United Party's favour as most thought they would be?

Stephanie Wilson (Deputy PM): I'm not suggesting that, Mr. Reynolds; I'm saying that with just 4% of the national vote counted, and with 8 constituencies projected, you can hardly say that Labour are on track to win a victory.

Leslie Reynolds: But that's exactly what our forecast is saying, Ms. Wilson; in just this last minute our forecast, taking into account votes that are just coming in, already have Labour on 323, just three away from a majority and three up from our original exit poll. We're looking at what could be egg on all our faces, but it seems that we've got the basics right, at least.

Stephanie Wilson (Deputy PM): I think we've simply got to wait for more results, an actual declaration, before we're able to say anything about the actual business of forming government.

Leslie Reynolds: But you realise that if the exit poll is true, if Labour truly are leading in both the primary vote and the two-party preferred, then we've got a situation where United will have to do a deal with parties diametrically opposed to its ideology to hold onto power? Already Labour are saying that United have lost the mandate to govern, and that Bertram Andrews should be given first crack at trying to form government.

Stephanie Wilson (Deputy PM): I think it's a very long night ahead, and we might well be in for a lot of surprises.

10.45pm

Dan Jacobs: We don't have any official declarations in yet, but we have enough to project thirteen seats for Labour and five for United; none for the rest of the parties so far. Stephen?

Prof. Stephen Brown: Well, counting is carried out live — we've got data from the Elections Department, and it's updated every two minutes or so per seat — and that lets us project the outcome for a majority of seats. It's a lot of mathematics and thresholds which we used to calculate by hand with adding machines; but now computers take care of everything for us. But we're not allowed to officially give a seat away until the Returning Officer at each constituency declares the result out loud. So it's quite a lot of waiting, but we don't need to wait until then to get that result.

Dan Jacobs: And our exit poll — which we're now calling our forecast — has been ticking slowly up, up, up in favour of Labour; they're now on 323 seats, United are down to 297. The early votes haven't been in favour of United as we thought; but it might portend worse times for them if the impact of the scandal is still there. And we think, well, it will. We won't pull the trigger on any overall election projection until we have at least a hundred seats in; but the wind seems to be blowing very red. Where are Labour winning? Will?

Will Byrne: Here we have a list of sixty target seats for Labour. They finished last election on 285 seats; to win the election outright they need 326, so they need to win at least 41 of these seats. It's a sea of teal and green; and let's look at what the exit poll gave us. A whole lot of seats, scattered around the country; United holding on strong in the south, in Georgia, we think; but particularly strong in the north, where Bertram Andrews went on a whistle-stop tour in the last days of the campaign. Postwick, Willowvale, Warrington, Brookvale; four seats in Westmond alone we're saying will fall to Labour, and by quite large margins.

Perhaps not coincidentally, these four seats only have early voting rates of 5 to 6%, meaning that the effect of the alleged infidelity claims are strongly affecting results here.

Now let's take a look at the swingometer. It measures the change between two political parties nation-wide, and allows us to project seats that will fall to either side based on that. Both parties have gained in the primary vote, so it's difficult to tell the swing at first glance; but looking at the two-party preferred vote, Labour need a swing of 4.5% to form government. They got 46.5% of the vote last time...and a swing would see just about 35 seats to fall to them, which is where we got our exit poll figures from.

11.10pm

Mona Cheng: ...and now we go to Foxchester West, which is the seat which billionaire turned politician Thomas Kim is trying to win, but it's not looking very good. Kim is lagging by ten points in the two-candidate preferred vote; a swing of 13.6% against the United Party, which is quite an indictment. We're not giving this seat away just yet — only 16% of the vote has been counted — but it places the billionaire in a very bad spot.

Dan Jacobs: There seemed to be questions over whether Kim wanted to win the seat at all; his political career hasn't exactly gone quite as well as he's wanted it to be.

Mona Cheng: Be that as it may, should Foxchester West fall to Labour, then it's going to represent a massive own goal for the United Party and its open primary system. Thirty-two incumbent MPs were defeated in their primary; a further sixteen chose not to re-contest their primary after they feared losing, and one was forcibly kicked off the ballot. In most of these seats, the newly-selected candidate is suffering an above-average swing against them. And in the case where the candidate was forcibly kicked off the ballot...

Cheng brings up Yarwood, the seat of Stephen Williams; he's currently leading by fifteen points.

Mona Cheng: ...that may very well have backfired.

11.35pm

Leslie Reynolds: Mr. Williams, will you be caucusing with the United Party if you win, as our poll currently has you doing?

Stephen Williams (Independent): Well, I won't be caucusing with anyone. If the new government wants me to work with them, then they'll have to come to me; but I'd certainly work with anyone that asks. My responsibility is first to my constituents.

Leslie Reynolds: But won't you find it hard to get, say, committee assignments, or finding individual members to work with you on Bills?

Stephen Williams (Independent): I certainly hope that the party of government — whichever one it is — will give me some.

Leslie Reynolds: Who do you think will become Prime Minister, Mr. Williams?

Stephen Williams (Independent): Well, you've got Bertram Andrews inching closer and closer to 326, so I'd say he's the safe bet in this situation!

11.58pm

Dan Jacobs: We've got 102 projected seats in; thirteen projected Labour gains from the United Party, the Alliance...and so on. I think...yes, we're ready to make a projection, just two hours after the polls close; Tumbrans, your next federal government will be a Labour government; we're projecting that Bertram Andrews will become the 34th Prime Minister of Tumbra. We're not speculating yet on whether it'll be a majority or minority government, but our current forecast has him at 325 seats; so it might not be long before we get that call. We're headed now to Carrington, where we've had reports that Max Young has arrived at his count.

Now that Gennady Chernenko appeared to be more comfortable with his new team and vice versa, it was now time for him to fill whatever gaps he had noticed during his first four games in charge. More wingbacks and forward players capable of operating both on the flanks and inside the box seemed to be the order of the day, and Chernenko cast his net as wide as he could to find as many of these players as he could for the next qualifying window against Lisander and Aleirave. There were two reasons for Chernenko doing these: first, having more options was always a good thing, and something that he had always done no matter the team or the league that he was managing in. Secondly, while most of the players on the current squad were in the primes of their careers, a lot of them had also reached the age of thirty and beyond, and Gennady Chernenko had decided that now was as good a time as any for him to start preparing for the future even if it was highly probable that he wasn’t going to be staying at this particular job for a long time. At the very least, he would like to give his successor better tools for the job upon his departure, whether it was in two years or four or maybe even six.

One of the players who received their first ever call-ups to the senior Fleftic women’s football team was Beth Anderson. There had once been a brief period in which Beth and her father Ben Anderson were the talk of the town when the two of them had both received the opportunity to represent Abanhfleft in their respective sports: baseball for Ben, and youth football for Beth. That in itself was only the background for the actual story itself, which was about a single father rising against all odds to become the starting catcher not only for his hometown team the Rosenpfelblatz Dragons but also for the Abanhfleft Revolution (the country’s national baseball team) while at the same time encouraging his daughter to go into sports as well to the point that she eventually established herself on the youth team of Rosenpfelblatz City FC, one of the biggest clubs in all of Abanhfleft. It was a great feel-good story about the power of sports… for all of two weeks, until the inevitable happened and Abanhfleft went out of the Under-18 World Cup on penalties, and everyone forgot about poor little Beth.

And “forgotten” was actually the perfect word to describe what happened to Beth Anderson after the 17th Under-18 World Cup because she wasn’t part of the squad that went to Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland two years later only to lose three straight games, not that her presence there would have probably helped out the cause anyway. Yes, she was still within the age bracket and could have played in one more Under-18 World Cup, but could she alone really have helped Abanhfleft get through in a group that also contained Tumbra, Ceni, and Poafmersia? Maybe she could, or more likely perhaps not. The thing though was that no one would really know since it never happened, unless someone could visit the timeline where Beth actually got called up to the under-18 squad for a second time and tell everyone else what happened over there. Until then, Beth Anderson’s time with the Fleftic women’s national team would remain a small footnote in the annals of history.

But the thing about Beth though was that she didn’t let any of that bring her down. She had already experienced her fair share of adversity, having been raised by a single father who often had to spend lots of time away from her just to make ends meet, so missing out on becoming an established fixture in the national team wasn’t that big of a deal to her. At the very least, she didn’t make too much of a fuss about having been passed over in subsequent tournaments to the point where she wasn’t even under consideration for making a trip to Valanora for the Di Bradini Cup. Then again, at the time, the Fleftic under-21 team didn’t really play with wingers so Beth would have been surplus to requirements there in more ways than one. In any case, Beth decided to focus on improving herself in order to break into the first team of Rosenpfelblatz City’s women’s side, and now, eight years on from her one and only campaign with the Fleftic youth setup, Beth Anderson was now a regular fixture on the right wing for the Citizens at 24 years old. And now, with Gennady Chernenko in charge of the women’s national team and searching for more wingers to put into his squad, Beth was about to get a second chance at representing the Democratic Republic.

Beth had only been to the SFA’s regular training camp in Riuwiee once before, and that was eight years ago, but even she had to admit that so much had changed during those years between her first and second call-ups for the national team. Maybe because it was because she was now going to suit up for the national team instead of the under-18s or the under-21s, but camp appeared to be much busier than the last time that she was here. There were more players, more staff, more people from the SFA, and overall it just seemed as if a lot of people were doing a lot of work now compared to the last time that Beth was here. It most likely had to do with the fact that there was a new manager in charge of the women’s team: not only were there a lot of people doing all that they could do make sure that everything was up to the new manager’s standards, but the higher-ups also probably wanted to see if their efforts to finally get someone who could turn around the culture in the team had paid off, and they wanted to see that transformation in person. At least that was what Beth thought was going on.

“Watch out!” someone yelled out, and Beth turned around just in time to see a football flying towards her. All she could really do was yelp in surprise and hold up her arms and hands to protect her head from the oncoming projectile. She did try to push the ball away from as it came nearer, but since she wasn’t trained to be a goalkeeper, all Beth could really do was take a wild swing and hope for the best, which in her case wasn’t really saying much. The ball grazed Beth’s fingers, and at the speed it was traveling, the contact was enough to make them sting.

“Sorry!” the same person who had cried out the warning to Beth said in apology, and Beth acknowledged it with a nod even as she tried to shake some feeling back into her fingers. “I’m sorry,” the girl said as she ran over to Beth, perhaps to check on her. “Gosh, I’m sorry,” she repeated. “I swear I wasn’t trying to hit you. But maybe you shouldn’t have been walking here because this is where a lot of the balls fly whenever we’re training. Someone should really put up some nets here, or maybe even just a sign warning people or something. ‘Caution: loose balls!’” she said, and then she laughed a little at her own joke.

“It’s all right, I’m fine,” Beth assured her. “I played catch the baseball with my dad, and he throws hard with his right hand.”

“Ooh, so your dad likes baseball?” the girl asked. “And how did you end up in football after all that baseball practice?” And then the girl took a closer look at Beth, and then it seemed as if everything clicked into place for her, and she continued, “Oh my gosh! You’re her, aren’t you?”

“Um, who are you talking about again?” Beth asked back.

“You’re Beth Anderson!” the girl cried out. “The girl who was in the news back in the day because you and your dad were both playing for the national teams! Of course your dad was with the Revolution in the World Baseball Classic and you were with the… what was it? The under-21s? The under-18s? It doesn’t really matter. What matters is that you and your dad were both playing for Abanhfleft at the same time! And, like, wasn’t that the first time you two have been away from each other? Like, literal countries and regions apart?”

“Wait, you actually still remember that?!” Beth asked incredulously. “You didn’t just look it up on your phone just before you kicked that ball at me or something, right?”

“Girl, I was around your age when that was the news!” the girl replied. “Well, actually, what I remember was Gortolekua knocking us out of the Under-18 World Cup on penalties, but your story was a big part of the build-up to that. Shame that that was how it ended, but I mean, that’s just Abanhfleft, right? Anyway, where are my manners? Mavis McGlamery,” the girl said, extending her hand.

“Hi,” Beth said as she shook Mavis’s hand. “Well, clearly you know who I am already, but let me introduce myself anyway. Beth Anderson. Yeah, the same one from the news some years ago.”

“Hey, this is your first call-up in a long time, right?” Mavis asked. “Well, it’s about damn time, I say. I remember playing against Rosenpfelblatz a couple of times in the league, and you were cooking your side of the pitch more times than not. And I always thought that the team could have used someone like you. Maybe we would have won more with you in the team. But, better late than never, right?”

“Wait, do you actually think that?” Beth asked. “You’re not just saying that because I’m me, right?”

“Does it matter if I say yes or no?” Mavis asked back. “Look, the team needs all the help that it can get. This is, like, the first time in a long time when we’ve actually looked like we have something resembling a chance of making it to the World Cup finals for the first time in God knows how long. And, given how Chernenko has us playing now, we definitely need more wingers. Like I said, it’s about time you got called up to the senior team, and I’m looking forward to playing with you instead of against you. So, don’t go around trying to get yourself injured right now, okay? Good luck!” Mavis said, and then she ran off.

Well, that was weird, Beth thought to herself. Guess that part hasn’t changed a single bit, she mused as she continued making her way across the training camp to get introduced to the new coaching staff.

Welcome back to this Random Ramble. Only one game to cover this time, so this one will be lighter than normal on action...but more inclusive of the bigger picture as we only have one more game before we reach halftime in the fixture list. So let's see what we can see here.
MD5: Conania 2-3 TJUN-ia
MD6: BYE

My Take
Our only game was in Conania and everyone was hoping for a decent result against the Baptism of Fire team. Things wouldn't start off too hot for the team as Zelina Marquez headed an Own Goal off a corner from Domezio Rotundo after only 9 minutes...but we would recover from there. Fernandino found the equaliser in the 34th, Marquez headed home the right way this time in the 44th and Kristina Bay made it three in the 67th. Rotundo didn't make things nervy in the 87th but in the end, we held on for the 3-2 win...and a much-needed one at that.

In terms of the bye, we sat back and watched the other 3 games. We have 7 points on the board with 7 games to play, 3 behind 2nd place Gnejs while Delte run away with it at 5-0. Could be better, but could be worse.
Reactions
The fact it was 3-2 was certainly hounded upon, but a win was still a win.

The intrigue was in our position post-bye. 3 points are the gap to 2nd as everyone is considering Delte "group winners-elect" until circumstances change. The fans have belief that this gap to Gnejs can be bridged...but can TJUN-ia not get in their own way? That's the question right there.

Next Fixtures
MD7: vs United Hawkland (3rd, 8pts) - Carlandas
MD8: vs Delte (1st, 15pts) - TJUN-ia City

Two games across the Bay of Peace that will speak only hard truths about who TJUN-ia are as a team and how far they could go in the 5 games beyond these two. It may well be the most important home double-header in TJUN-ian Football history...so what are the expectations? Would 3 points be enough? 4? If we are serious as a footballing nation, do we dare pray for 6? Only time will tell.

7 games remain...but these 2 coming up may be the biggest of the lot.

OOC - the boxed BoJo speech is lightly adapted from an infamous RL Boris Johnson speech. And if makes little sense, well that was true of the original, too.

A STATEMENT FROM THE KRAZY KLOWN KOLLEGE

Dear Mundies,

Surely our CRUSHING VICTORY over the poor helpless mundies of Elmyia shows the futility of opposing the inherent superiority of the Krazy Klown College. We expected to thrash Pyazhnaya at home, but winning away to Elmyia, the second seeds team in the group, shows that our qualifying campaign is BACK ON TRACK!

Even local media outlet 'The Beaucester Gazette' conceded the NATURAL SUPERIORITY of the clowns, describing the match as a 'FIRST HALF DELUGE' as our glorious and noble captain BoJo himself scored a brace while demonstrating the inferiority of foreigners. After the match, BoJo offered some priceless pearls of wisdom over the result:

I don’t know if you’ve heard the news my friends but yesterday I went to Elmyia. Hands up who has been to Elmyia?

I was initially quite hesitant but I found it was very much my kind of place. It had good schools, excellent health care, facilities have gone from quite basic to in-line with global standards and everything remains relatively cheap, and they really enjoy watching the Holy Empire children's cartoon series Pippa Pig – there’s a bear called Dr Beige Bear, no trouble too great, always turns up for a consultation. Superb infrastructure – novel transport systems in Elmyia. And safe streets, virtually no crime.

But what amazed me most of all was the discovery that Pippa Pug has already got two theme parks in her honour in Darkmania and two I think in East Leaf Islands and she is currently exported, her shows and her merchandise, to 180 countries around the multiverse in a multi-billion pound franchise. Isn’t that an astonishing thing?

And I want to leave you with this closing thought. Think how much more we could do when we withdraw from the World Cup revive the slightly moribund multiverse trading system routes between the Dreamed Realm and Ordinary Reality, and protect our intellectual property with deals. And do more to send fantastic products like Pippa Pig around the multiverse. If we can sell this weird pig to mundy children there is no limit to our creative abilities.

Pippa’s influence, cultural influence – she’s got a younger brother called Fred by the way – is so pervasive that kids in Vilita now say ‘to-marto’ instead of ‘to-mayto’ and ‘mummy’ rather than ‘mom’. And there you go – that is believed to be a direct result of Pippa Pig and that is the effect of the free trade in which the Basileus believes. But we can only exploit that trade by withdrawing from the World Cup after thrashing all of the other teams in Group 1.

Shame about Vdara, mind

Given this perfectly sensible speech, we propose that qualification should be declared at an end, Vdara disqualified because they're obsessed with computer operating systems, and we should be advanced to the main tournament as is our NATURAL RIGHT.

The Put Down

Brannfjord 2-0 Kimi-Suomi (Sigurd Haugen 23', 85')
Kimi-Suomi 1-3 Cassadaigua (Karl Leif Svonsson 5'|Chrissy Engle 25', Kaitlin Millikan 45+3', Lexi McGregor 63')

No. Kimi-Suomi was not ready to make the leap. Apparently, they never were.
It sucks. I honestly felt we would take at least 2 points. Was that too high of me to think?

But we must move on. We HAVE to move on. We cannot give up. Our DNA means we must not quit.
Erishinmaat and Mytanija away. That's up next.
WE CANNOT GIVE UP. NOT UNTIL WE ARE IN THE GROUND.

Postby Tero al Disco » Mon Apr 01, 2024 2:12 pm

I may have said this a billion times, but Tero al Disco's WCQ match against Audioslavia was about to be arguably the most important game ever played so far. The Tricolor had started with a bang: with a flying start of 3 wins and 1 draw in 4 matches, that meant they were first (though after the round 5 bye they went down to second). Tero would host the 2-time world champions and 9-time finalists Audiosavia. That's what the World Cup-demanding fans, executives, and the people in general of times now past were hoping for. Seeing the team play against the big boys of the sport, even if that meant getting the loss of their lifetimes. I don't think I need to tell you how they would've felt coming to this match.

Your host in this minute-by-minute radio commentary, Gastón Dezapeggo.

PRE-MATCH

"Tero al Disco is going to kick-off now...at any moment now. Kuchler won the toss there. The Audioslavian roster doesn't show who's the captain so the goalkeeper Hein Helder went for the coin toss. But it's going to start now. It's Audioslavia on the left half of the pitch in the Estadio de la República. The Banijan referee whistles for kickoff! It's Audioslavia 0, Tero al Disco 0 here in Capital! It's 21:01 in Tero al Disco!"

3 minutes

"...it rebounds on Facundo Grosso, he tries to kick out, it bounces off Brandon Bruhn's head and it's going to be a throw-in for Tero al Disco. Maximo Manet gets the throw-in going in the right-hand- OH AND IT GOES OVER BUVALELLI'S HEAD! HE DIDN'T PAY ATTENTION TO THAT ONE DID HE! It's Hirsch with the ball, he's chargin- no, he lobs it forward to Leguizamón, perfect pass to Legui. Legui's charging into the...right-hand side I think he's gonna cross it to Biaggi...No! Legui's still got the ball, he goes past Malcom, I think? Yes it's Malcom. Leguiz'mon's charging like a thunderbolt on the Audioslavian defense he closes in on Helder HE SHOOTS! BUT IT HITS THE SIDE NETTING! WHAT A START FOR TERO AL DISCO!"

8 minutes

"Everton Bolding's trying to play out the back for Audioslavia, he's on the right-hand side, it's a high pass forward to Frey Pell- BIAGGI SNATCHES THE BALL WITH HIS HEAD, HE'S RUNNING WITH IT AND HE'S GOING TO GET INTO A ONE-ON-ONE OVER THE KEEPER, THE DEFENDERS CAN'T SEEM TO STOP HIM, THEY CAN'T. ALVARO BIAGGI, HE TRIES TO CIRCLE ROUND THE KEEPER, HE SHOOTS BUT IT'S SAVED BY HELDER! THE AUDIOSLAVIAN DEFENSE NEED TO WAKE UP NOW OR ELSE, CORNER KICK FOR TERO AL DISCO 8 MINUTES, ALMOST 9!"

16 minutes

For the first 15 minutes, the Audioslavian forwards showed a lot of potential to scare Tero al Disco, but, as Gastón said, the defense weren't paying attention to anything, they had lots of errors, even though they were an obligatory piece in manager Winfridh's Post-Football. Was that why they conceded six goals in the first four games?

"Figueredo kicks the corner, it's headed out by one of the Audioslavian centre-halves, I haven't seen a team use centre-halves since ages ago...I thought they were gone? But anyway, they're going on a quick counter, and Napoliello can't reach Gael Coorie...Gael Coorie's still got the ball, he's the one charging down with all his might, it's a pass to Kjartan Lúnquerque. I don't know, Félix hasn't accounted for Audioslavia's counter-attacking prowess, the defense are utterly outnumbered, Lúnquerque's still going for it, he gets into a one-on-one with Rico RICO SAVES IT! BUT LÚNQUERQUE ACCIDENTALLY KICKS HIS HEAD! IT BOUNCES OFF COORIE AGAIN, COORIE SHOOTS AND IT GOES IN, BUT THE REFEREE DISALLOWS IT FOR A FOUL IN ATTACK!...Rico's luckily fine, but I had a mini-stroke there. Braian Rico with his...handball save had given Tero al Disco a sigh of relief..."

36 minutes

Then not much happened. It's true, Audioslavia started to get in control of the match as expected. Tero al Disco weren't allowed any chances, but the defense were holding their own with what they had. Facundo Grosso got a yellow card in the 27th minute after Martín Kuchler was brought down by midfielder Marc-Antoine Trigintillion, which led to Facundo slide-tackling Marc-Antoine intentionally late as revenge. Frey Pelle also got a yellow after fouling Hernando Lucero some 10 metres outside the area, 3 minutes later. And in the 36th minute, Miguel Napoliello committed a foul on Frey.

"Frey Pelle is gonna take the free kick at any moment, he's going to cross in the middle of the area it seems, the Audioslavians are all positioned there, let's see if the Terenses can stop 'em. The ball goes down the middle, it's headed out by Kunz, but it's left over to Brandon Bruhn, Bruhn controls the ball for a right-hand cross, no he's not gonna hit the cross he's trying to dribble it past the defenders, he goes past Kuchler, he goe- a great slide tackle from Kunz! He leaves it to Lúnquerque. Lúnquerque positions himself for a chance at goal, HE HITS THE BALL BUT IT'S SAVED BY RICO THE REBOUND Goal...Goal for Audioslavia...it's actually Marc-Antoine Trigintillion who gets the rebound off and in his right foot, and he chips it in...what's he doing, he's celebrating in Facundo Grosso's face! And Figueredo comes out to defend him...yes, yellow, perfect from the ref! Trigintillion is booked, so is Figueredo...absolutely unnecessary taunt from the Audioslavian midfielder. It's 37 minutes now, and Audioslavia lead 1-0, the fans went nuts in that goal."

Little did he know, that that would start a show of altercations, fouls, yellows, one red, time-wasting, and Gastón, and the Tero al Disco team falling for Winfridh's masterplan.

Second half

As usual, I get tired of writing stuff by the second half, so let me tell you that the second half was characterised by nothing getting done whatsoever. It was a collection of players getting angry at each other. It was mostly like what I wrote before this part. Here are some of my favourite moments:

54 minutes

"This is Lucero with the ball, he's trying to go forward however he can but the Audioslavian defense is performing excellently, Lucero tries to run to his left and OOOH!!! If that's not a red card for Sandy Harkness then the ref's straight up forgiving him. If that's not a red card...And it's a yellow card for Harkness. Unbelievable! And Leguizamón comes in, he lightly pushes the Audioslavian and he's fallen, he's fallen like he's been shot, he's fallen like that!" "Yeaaaah that's fine," "Well, but they that's-, they can't be acting like that against a team of a much worse level than them, that shows how good well, in my- the Audioslavians actually are." "Well in my opinion they're doing it to wind our team up, there's no other choice." "But it's such an asshole thing to do, that!"

60 minutes

"Gael Coorie finds himself having to pass it to his left, Sandy Harkness comes running near the touchline and it's a pass from Gael and Narciso Giovanni comes in two-footing, but he clearly touches the ball first and it's a throw-in for Audioslavia. The opposition's players crowd the referee, and they claim that Narciso actually touched Harkness first, he hasn't. And the referee to dish out two yellows, to Tibere and Bolding, that's four yellow cards to Audioslavia already in 60 minutes..."

71 minutes

"It's Gael Coorie again, probably at the exact same spot where he got tackled by Giovanni some 10 minutes earlier. Figueredo comes for him and well.....yes, he's getting sent off, a second yellow card for him...and Tero al Disco will have to find a way to score a goal and fight through the hardships, with 1 less man."

83 minutes

"Look, I've already told you that I'm sick and tired of them wasting time...for the people that couldn't hear it on the radio because we were talking about the substitutes, er...someone who came in as a sub for Audioslavia, I don't know who was that Juanpi? It was Helios Roy- Yeah, Helios Roy, he came in when the ball was in the ground, and Giovanni was about to take the throw-in, and this guy, he kicked it towards the Terense fans, that's what started this quarrel between Audioslavian and Terense players. And now it's Leonardi and Kuchler who got booked for the Tricolor, and Roy, and Malcom for the away team."

In the dying minutes of the game, Audioslavia went on a more attacking style, despite the time-wasting incident, and Tero al Disco had no shots on target during the second half. A key match in group 19 finished 1-0 to Audioslavia. Now, Tero will close the first half of the qualifiers away to Cabo Azure, in a match which will decide who ends the first 7 rounds in playoff spots.

Carpathia and Ruthenia stumble going into the end of the first half

Going into the final two games of the first half with second seeds Ochre Islands struggling it was vital that we take some points off group suprise dark horse Sarzonia and try to take at least one point off the top seeds who had already fallen to the dark horse. If I had started to write this article after the end of the first half of the match against Sarzonia then things would have looked rosy for Carpathia and Ruthenia with a playoff spot dangling temptingly in front of us, and if we went on to perhaps dare we say snatch a win away against Ko-oren could we dare dream of automatic qualification?

Those dreams were torn apart twice by the boots of Sarzonia's Wilson, and after throwing away a two to nothing lead against Sarzonia we never looked to give Ko-oren a serious challenge. However with the bye matchday yet to be played perhaps Sarzonia will throw a similar wobbly and leave us equal on points going into the second half, and perhaps once again a playoff spot may be in our grasp. One thing is for certain though, Carpathia and Ruthenia need to use this break to get their heads on straight.

StrayaRoos 7 (C. Kaiplo '3, '8, '47, Ari '23, Kerr '43, Shalik '86, Vidya '89)
Kandorith 2 (Unknown '61, '71)
HT: 4-0 Att: 33,181
StrayaRoos - Yesak (C) - Chinwe, Poalian, Kuyta, Morgan - Ari (Shalik '78), Vidya, Keane, Karmea (L. Kaiplo '73) - Kerr, C. Kaiplo
Kandorith - Unknown

Seven goals. The Emus scored seven goals against top-30 opposition. They expected to challenge and maybe come out with a point, but not thrash Kandorith 7-2. The game started with a bang, as in the third minute, an Ella Vidya cross found Cruz Kaiplo in the box, and he smashed it home, making it 1-0. Kaiplo got a second 5 minutes later, assisted by Ali Ari, making it 2-0 before the 10th minute.
Ari then got one himself in the 23rd, when he found the end of a long ball from Kai Kuyta, then placed it into the bottom corner, making it 3-0. After that, the Kandorith goal was ruthlessly attacked by the Emus, trying for the 4th. The breakthrough came in the 43rd when Alana Kerr scored from a corner. And then it was halftime, with a 4-0 advantage to the Emus. But they wouldn’t stop there. Almost immediately after halftime, Cruz Kaiplo got his hat trick after tapping in a parried shot, making it 5. After that, the Emus started to get wasteful with the ball, which led to Kandorith having a few chances, one of which became a goal, making it 5-1. Then Kandorith converted a penalty, making it 5-2 in the 73rd minute. This seemed to kick the emus back awake, and they returned to attacking the Kandorith goal, and got a 6th, as Zane Shalik scored his first international goal in the 86th minute. The seventh came soon after a dodgy back pass from the Kandorith centre back gave Ella Vidya a golden chance, which she took, making it 7-2. The blitz of a top-thirty side makes it clear that the goal is for a run into the World Cup. But will they make it? Who knows.
