Aurora TV causes backlash after plans to raise price for World Cup streaming package by a third
STRATON: As World Cup season draws close, attention has been put back on the TV rights package of the World Cup, a lucrative revenue-bringer for most media companies in Tumbra. But Aurora, the country's biggest cable television company, has drawn furore after it announced its plan to broadcast 54 of the tournament's 64 games exclusively on its platform, for a price increase from $98 to $129. The Capnordic Chief Executive Officer of Aurora Media, Jacques Delperière, responding to media enquiries, said that "The increased price of Aurora's offerings for the tournament reflect the increased number of matches to be broadcast on the platform — at World Cup 94, we broadcast 45 of the 64 games at that tournament, and now we're adding ten additional games to the lineup for our viewers to watch."
The ten games not broadcast by Aurora will be those primarily starring Tumbra; namely, those will be the first match of the World Cup, Tumbra's three group stage games, Tumbra's second-round and quarter-final matches, as well as both semi-finals, the final, and the third-placed playoff are all safeguarded by law to be broadcast for free by the publicly-funded Tumbran Broadcasting Corporation (TBC). The move to increase prices apparently came after Aurora outbid competing media companies for the rights to broadcast the 54 matches after "an increase in the amount stated in the bid book for the package which we are not, at the current time, at liberty to disclose," as paraphrased from Delperière's statement.
The backlash to the announcement was swift and severe; trending on the various social media networks which populate cyberspace was a unanimous roar of upheaval. "We're paying an additional $30 for games that we're not even sure we can watch live — who can watch two games at once apart from the most dedicated of us who wish to live broadcast the scores to a random Discord server?" said @mike.oxlong on cica.da, the Dantopian shortform social media site. Players were also keen to wade in on the issue; Xanneria-based Neil Broadhead posted that "And the businessmen wonder why so many people pirate football these days; people aren't resources to be squeezed dry. $129 is an absolute travesty from @aurora.media and should be reversed, or at least, lowered."
The Tumbran Football Federation could not be reached for comment, either on the issue of broadcasting rights or on the matter of 18 gold bars being delivered to the headquarters of the Federation shortly after six a.m. on Thursday, less than 24 hours after the announcement of the price increase.
