Inside the Euran parliament, nearly three thousand MPs were slowly filing into the massive chamber. There was little fanfare until they were seated, at which point the standard ceremonial practice of every day sitting commenced. Tradition dictated a rendition of the national anthem, Ode to Eura, would be performed. Then, the entry of the Speakers would take place, followed by the opening of the doors for the non-binding Expert Executive upper house and its own members. Today was a Tuesday, which would normally mean Questions for the Government; the best opportunity for the main opposition parties to grill the Prime Minister in person. But today there would be a different first order of business.

‘Order in the house, please!’ Primary Speaker Alexandra Lowe quietened the house, silencing the microphones with her master control for good measure. ‘The Federal Government has requested the floor for a statement on the situation in Nyowani Kitara. I have acceded to this request. Calling the elected member for Honeyswood, Ian Smith.’ As per tradition, the governing Liberal Party rose to their feet for their leader, then sat again as soon as he was finished standing.
‘Members of Parliament…’

‘Commodore.’
‘Admiral.’
The Euran Commodore Watershed and the Nepharan Admiral Paterson took their seats. The hard work of a negotiation had already been done. Now they just had to iron out details.
‘I just want to be sure’, Paterson pressed, ‘that this is going to be everything we need.’
‘Based on what you gave us it will suit your needs. And if not, we can always do more.’
‘Fuckin’ A. So, we’ve got…’
‘Two Journeyman class amphibious transport docks – ENS Broad Shoulders and Caravan. The names are a bit on the nose and they’re a bit worn, but they’re yours to use as big old taxis for as long as you need them.’
‘…and with them, we can unload vehicles? MRAPs, armoured personnel carriers, tanks?’ One of Paterson’s less informed colleagues, an Army commander, had butted in.
‘Absolutely. Each ship is outfitted with helicopters, hovercraft, and landing craft for the purpose of deploying them onto a beachhead if no ports are available. But you’ll also have access to two Fort class dock landing ships, ENS Turret and Buttress. These are even older in physical age and design philosophy and don’t carry dedicated internal space for helicopters, but they do have a dedicated well dock.’

‘Ok. So that’s the naval loans.’
‘Secondments, technically. The EN insist on crewing and operating them as usual. But the Naval Auxiliary can actually loan the Nepharan Navy vessels, as your Defence Minister agreed in principle yesterday. ’
‘Loans, secondments, whatever. The fact is, and I don’t like admitting this, our logistics chain is a fucking joke, yeah? So, have you got the fast combat support vessels? Without them my lads are going into a fight without bullets and bread.’
‘Yes, yes, we’ve prepared two of them. Camel class. And with them three replenishment oilers and a fuel tanker, two dry cargo and ammunition ships, two vehicle cargo ships, a search and rescue specialist vessel and a hospital ship. All in all, that’s a dozen auxiliary ships which could massively increase your capacity to move the Nepharan Army out west.’
‘Sounds fuckin’ good to me.’ Paterson sprung to her feet and held out her hand. ‘Good doing business with you.’
‘No problem at all – not like I had much of a choice. Just don’t sink any of them. Please.’

‘…all of us here in this house know what struggle looks like. And let me tell you, it does not look like what is going on in this country right now. We have a growing economy. We are as unified as we have been for a long time. Yes, these referenda are testing our boundaries of debate, and making us passionate. But there’s nothing bad about that, no, not one bit. It shows the strength of our democracy. Let me tell you instead about a place where there is struggle, and where democracy is not strong. Let me tell you about Nyowani Kitara.’

‘Not that far from our nation lies a beautiful homeland of twenty-five million. Though its natural surroundings are wonderful and its people as kind as any, Nyowani Kitara is beset by a plague we have become all too familiar with in this country – the existential struggle of war. This is not a simple conflict. There are at least three factions, all of whom with very different motivations and backgrounds, all of whom have wronged one another in some manner. Fathers, mothers, daughters and sons are being pitted against one another in the vilest kind of infighting. Many around the world have said this must be brought to an end, and of course, they are completely correct…’

Fort Kajana trembled under the rumbling thunder of dozens of transport aircraft coming and going as the Nepharan Army deployed its Forward Expeditionary Brigade under the command of Brigadier Claudia Larchwood. Nepharan troops, vehicles and materiel were being rapidly unloaded onto the airfield, watched closely by gathered soldiers of the regime’s Kitara Revolutionary Forces. It was an odd couple relationship in the making, that was for sure; a socially liberal social democracy with a professional volunteer army popping over to help out then neighbourhood Marxist-Leninist dictatorship with more than a hint of hereditary monarchy, defended by their large but poorly disciplined and equipped force of mostly conscripts.

It’s said that you should always read between the lines, and this was one of those situations. Quite literally hidden in between the lines of Nepharan soldiers were small numbers of another group of foreign combat personnel. A bit browner haired, a little less bulky, and with a different kind of fear factor; less blunt, intimidating and mercenary like the Nepharan’s they accompanied, these were black-clad figures of mysterious origin and an ominous veneer of quiet professionalism. One by one, they peeled away from the different Nepharan troops they’d been assigned to, and all gathered together in one of the buildings the KRF had set aside. There were no flag patches on their uniforms, no recognisable identifying marks. But to those in the know it was clear – the Euran Marine Commandos were on the ground.

‘…so, what are we to do? That, colleagues, is exactly the question the world is asking of us right now. Let us not be shy or modest. Look at the headlines, the gossip and rumours and leaks from foreign states, the pundits and experts, the statements of intent and letters we have been sent – everyone from Busukuma to Centralis wants to know what Eura is going to do. And why not? May I remind you, this country – under this Government, led by this party – is the one that delivered an overwhelming hammer blow to the dreadful surge of Sameban fascism. And through our military prowess, our diplomatic weight, our economic success, our political leadership, we have decisively led our region and this part of the multiverse across multiple crises.’

‘Mytanija. Mareibat. South Covello. Mertagne. A laundry list of places where the juntas, jingoists and jesters of this brutal world reigned, until Eura came to the table and said: enough! Now, I believe that we have a record in recent history to be proud of. But it has come at a cost. We have expended great amounts of blood and treasure resolving our own problems, let alone those of others. And unfortunately, we have not been as welcome everywhere as we might have hoped.’

‘In Nyowani Kitara, there are no easy options for us to repeat that success without going to the lengths we usually do and incurring those costs once more. That is because, if we are honest with ourselves, there is no completely clean ally in this conflict, no champion of a friendly cause, and no easy end in sight. Given my promises to the Euran people to focus on the issues that affect them at home after making foreign policy a priority for the last decade, this Government must set boundaries.’

‘Therefore, for the moment, there will be no swooping of the Euran falcon to save the day. No major intervention, no diving in to shield civilians, no derring-do for democracy. Instead, we will seek to prevent Nyowani Kitara from becoming a failed state and falling into the endless pit of permanent civil war at an arm’s length. We shall save lives and livelihoods without making Eurans the first in the firing line as they so often come are. This is where our allies come in…’

The Chair of the Office of State Intelligence picked up the phone, possibly the only one in Eura she didn’t have tapped.
‘Burns.’
‘Phillips, ma’am. Calling from Central Ops.’
‘Ah. I hope this is an update about “GEARSTAR”.’
‘Yes ma’am. And little green men.’ Her stomach turned at the phrase.
‘Its true then. Any idea on numbers?’
‘Unclear at this time, but we’re working on it. Former Sameban regime supporters in exile, including some of the only remaining senior regime military officers, have plucked for helping either the KFF or DFLK, particularly the former. We have no direct proof yet, but…’
‘How confident are you?’
‘Very.’

She stepped away from the handset and grabbed her coat. ‘I’ll need to speak to the Prime Minister immediately. He’s already started speaking in Parliament.’
‘Ma’am, can I make a suggestion?’
‘Go ahead.’
‘I think we should wait.’
‘And why on God’s green earth would we do that?’
‘I think it is in the best interested of the Office, and of the Prime Minister, that he comes across this information as late in the day as possible. It will give us more time to gather evidence and, well, being blunt here, reasons.’
‘Reasons to-‘
‘To go over there and kick seven shades of shit out of them.’
‘Good point. I’ll brief him in the evening then once you’ve had a chance to provide a further update. And don’t tell the KPWC anything through the backchannels, or the Nepharans, not yet. Are there any other complications?’
‘Yes. Bregaland communists and lot of them. They’ll probably roll in for the KPWC which gives us a bit of a diplomatic sensitivity on that front.’
‘Yes, it does. I’m sure they’ll start handing them over if we apply the right kind of pressure. Thank you, Phillips. We’ll speak again soon.’

‘…I cannot stress enough the esteem with which this country should hold our allies to the south in Nephara, even if we might not always see eye to eye on every issue. When the extinct Sameban regime bore down on us, terrorising every Euran and Sameban whom now share one, complete and diverse Eura, not many nations did everything they could. They sent aid, offered support and condolences, sanctioned the fascist regime, and all of these efforts were worthy contributions. But few wanted to fight, perhaps understandably given the extreme violence the former Sameban regime had visited upon its enemies. Nephara were different. Bastion called, and Corvistone answered.’

‘Thousands of Nepharan troops committed themselves to a war that was only their own due to their close allegiance to our country as well as theirs. Their numerical contribution was relatively small but outsized in its fury and impressive victories. And now, they wish to step up again, recognising an opportunity not just for their own country to play an important role in stabilising the region as a leading CRC member, but also in lightening the load from the never-ending list of Euran responsibilities. I have spoken regularly to Margravine Lindt in the last week and we have discussed a long-term plan for bringing the conflict to an end in Nyowani Kitara. After discussions with my Cabinet, our diplomatic corps and the armed forces, it is a plan which I am confident saying is the best hope of delivering a potentially peaceful future for the twenty-five million citizens of that country who need support.’

‘As all of us will be aware of by now, there are reports across the broadcast and print media of Nepharan troops having been deployed to Dewayo over the past twenty-four hours in order to support the Government of Nyowani Kitara in preventing its imminent collapse at the hands of opposition rebels. I can confirm that these reports are true. While mindful that the Government of Nyowani Kitara is not one whose politics we remotely share or endorse, I also recognise that these opposition groups do not represent viable alternatives themselves and will not sue for peace unless defeated on the battlefield.’

‘This Government therefore supports Nephara in its operation to ensure the survival of the Nyowani Kitaran state, in order to enable a ceasefire at some point in the not-too-distant future, and the restoration of peace and stability to the country. This support will come with strict conditions, on which Bastion will be providing oversight and input to support our allies and the current regime in Dewayo in ensuring no citizen of that country feels the need to rise up in arms again. Our support is practical as well as political; I would like to thank the men and women of the Euran Air Force for their brave service in enabling an overnight operation to transport thousands of troops, vehicles and supplies of the Nepharan Army to Dewayo, an operation that would not have been possible without Euran support. The Euran Armed Forces and this Government are continuing to develop solutions for enabling the continuation of this Nepharan-led operation in Nyowani Kitara.’

‘What of those who oppose this plan? There have been many statements in recent days by foreign government’s proclaiming their support for one faction or another, and some hoping to curry our favour for their positions. But these proclamations, while sometimes well intended, do not offer a strategy. Well, quite frankly, I don’t think they have one behind the scenes either. This is the only operational and realistic plan which can be delivered now – no negotiation, no delay. This is the only show in town. It is, like all plans to solve complex crises, bound up with different risks and potential points of failure. I can guarantee you now that the Euran Government will continuously monitor this situation and communicate closely with our partners to ensure we remain on track to a resolution. If we believe we are off track and that our objectives will not be achieved, we will reconsider how best to move forward.’

‘This strategy serves the best interest of Nyowani Kitara and its people, of their neighbours, of the wider Rushmore region, and of the Euran nation. And it is a strategy that must not be interfered with. Numerous powers from outside this region have insinuated they may try to intervene in this conflict directly. I say this now – the Euran Government will not tolerate such intrusions. The Euran Navy has deployed a carrier strike group to the Xandrian Sea, which will remain in place and intercept any attempt from external forces to interfere with the peacekeeping operations of our allies or ourselves. Such interventions should be restricted to humanitarian aid alone. And, in good time, we will proceed through the CRC to develop a long-term economic prosperity plan for Nyowani Kitara, where the CRC – Rushmoris, not outsiders – will shape the peace of the future. I will now release the floor for the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to answer questions.’

Chair,

I understand your Office has gained intelligence of increasing complications developing in the Nyowani Kitara situation. I cannot say this surprises me one bit. I also remain deeply concerned that the Prime Minister may have signed up to something here that our erstwhile allies cannot guarantee success in. You will be aware that the Prime Minister told the Margravine that Eura would not stand idle if she were to fail. I think he may have been speaking in the moment, and in truth hasn't thought about it beyond that - he's too bloody distracted by these damned referendums.

I would like to meet, and will bring key defence figures with me, so that we can develop a clean-up plan if this all goes sideways. In a world where Nafuna and her entourage get overrun or the Nepharans find themselves up the proverbial creek without a paddle, we are going to have to be ready to live up to the unwritten commitment to step in and sort the whole thing out. Its either us or someone we haven't thought of yet, and who definitely won't be looking out for our interests.

Yours,
Carl Rutherford
Foreign Secretary

“Complacency not an option” - Druuga

By Danii Raitov

After the Lieutenants’ shock loss to Kimi-Suomi yesterday, Twicetagrien manager Lyuk Druuga had some choice words about the squad’s morale in the dressing room.

“It’s a tough loss to swallow, especially since we now dropped to second place,” Druuga said in a press conference. The loss means that Twicetagria’s unbeaten run draws to a close, and it also meant that the Lieutenants have only won one match in their last four.

“Obviously the team has to improve in certain areas, but I still think the team morale is still there,” he added, “Most of these players are young with no prior experience, so the World Cup is definitely a daunting task.”

When asked if pride and complacency were factors of the loss, Druuga quickly denied those claims.

“I don’t know if you’re trying to undermine the players, but they have all been very humble even during training. Though, this dry streak is proof that we cannot tolerate complacency and laziness here,” Druuga reassured, “If the boys don’t put in their effort, what is there to reap?”

Despite this stumble, most Twicetagrien football fans still feel positive about the Lieutenants’ prospects of qualification. In a poll conducted on TwiiTur, a large majority of netizens feel that Twicetagria has a good chance of qualifying for their second time in a row.

“Back-to-back qualifications will be so good for our reputation… let’s hope people only find out about our footballing side” said one TwiiTur user.

Twicetagria sits second in Group 12 of the World Cup 89 Qualifiers. They face Kelssek and Astograth next. The former will be the match to watch as the top 2 teams in the group clash. Kelssek has the upper hand in terms of group standings. Only a draw could separate the sides. While Twicetagria had a resounding win against Astograth, they could still prove to be a challenge for the Lieutenants.

Twicetagria will play Kelssek on Thursday at 9 pm. Make sure to catch it on Vse Veshi Sports.

Too Little, Too Late
Breakthrough upset marred by end of qualification hopes

DARNESMARK, SÜDGOEKE - Of all the people responsible for bringing Geisenfried to this point, one can't deny the influence of the man considered the father of Geisen football, Wilhelm Rohm. He was instrumental in turning a popular hobby from around the country into a growing professional sport that would eventually come to dominate the attentions of fans all around. He was also a proud denizen of Darnesmark, and his legacy is why the GKFV, the Geisen Royal Football Association, is headquartered there, instead of the capital. And so while Königskrone may be the crown jewel in the heart of Königseifert and the Küstenkolosseum may be a sparkling modern achievement on the seaside in Heimüller, it is Wilhelm-Rohm-Stadion that stands as Geisen football's spiritual home. And so it was here that they put their hearts into toppling the top-ranked team in the group.

The previous match between the two had been a close one and remained a close one, so despite the large disparity in rank, there was still plenty of expectation that Geisenfried could perform. And they lived up to that expectation. The entire group has had a defensive tilt, with 5 teams averaging less than a goal conceded per game, and both Geisenfried and Brenecia fit the bill. The group leaders took to the pitch assaulting quickly, the Geisen defense responding by frequently overloading around the box, trying to throttle efforts in the final third. A strong counter-attack at the half-hour mark from Geisenfried forced Scathach Wright to push away Mikkel Christensen's effort, forcing a corner kick and a re-evaluation of strategy. Though Brenecia continued to dominate possession, they started to rely on a slower, more methodical build-up, but Geisen efforts to thwart Brenecia continued to prove effective through the halftime whistle. Geisenfried began to come more out of its shell in the early second half, starting to slowly peck away at the Brenecian advantage in possession, but by the hour mark, Brenecia had regained greater control - but still couldn't manage to pry apart the Geisen defense enough to make a solid chance. But a rare miscue led to the only goal that would break the tie and seal the score - Seth Dreschner pouncing on a miscommunication between Brenecia's midfield and finding the fastest man on the Geisen side, Djibril Kayode, out on the wing. A quick run up the left side drew the defense off just enough for him to find Christensen in the box on the break, but Wright came up once again to deny Geisenfried's center forward. This time, however, the rebound rolled back into play, and before one of Brenecia's backs could clear the ball, Ferdinand Roessler pounced on it, putting it home before the top-flight Brenecian keeper could recover. Unlikely as it seemed, Geisenfried was up one-nil, and the crowd was roaring.

Ahead beyond most expectations, the Steinadler retreated into a frantic defense, wanting to put everything between Brenecia and an equalizer. And boy, did the Brenecians come - forcing Loewen Juergensen to deny two strong attempts in the last five minutes plus stoppage time. But the keeper was comfortable on his home pitch, and as the clock ticked agonizingly on, eventually the whistle came to the side's salvation - finalizing one of the biggest upsets in qualifying so far, dealing Brenecia only their second loss and notching Geisenfried's second win over a world top 20 side since re-entering competition at AOCAF. Despite their efforts though, results elsewhere would make the fight fruitless. Squidroidia's victory at home against Le Choix meant that with only 3 matches left to play, they are 10 points back from the two teams tied at the top of the table, and unable to get to South Newlandia or Tikariot.

With World Cup hopes dashed, the next couple matches will be for pride, as contests against Garifunya and Le Choix will determine who will be king of the mid-table, behind the four qualification competitors of Brenecia, Huelavia, Squidroidia and Kohnhead. Then, depending on results, the final matchday is Geisenfried's last attempt to play spoiler, as they travel to Squidroidia. Outside of potentially ruining World Cup hopes, Geisenfried will look to see if they can provide enough of a resume to earn an invitation to the Cup of Harmony, which was just recently awarded to the nations of Zwangzug and Sylestone. Sources speculate that the Golden Eagles' strong performance through qualifiers despite not being in the world rankings, including this latest victory against Brenecia, should see them through, but only time will truly tell.

It was really starting to get embarrassing.
Sure, she was the hottest new thing to arrive in Brenecia. Sure, she was probably the bright spark of an otherwise fallow period of Brenecian development. But Katua Byrne never asked for an army of simps.
They followed her everywhere. They were at the airport when she disembarked, they were in Audioslavia when she disembarked back there. They were on Twii when she scored, assisted, made a pass, or broke a sweat. They were especially on Twii when Byrne was ever rested by, substituted off for or otherwise treated as the developing squad player she was by Itzi.
It's not like she wanted the fame. Either of... this kind, or the actual kind. She was in it for the money, because five years into her career she'd be able to live the rest of her life without work. There was an element of prestige she took pride in, but only because of her skill. She never wanted anyone to know who she was dating, or her secrets. Truth was she lived in a modest studio apartment, drove a small, efficient hatchback and spent her leisure time watching historical fiction. She liked giant pretzels. The nightlife was too flashy and obnoxious. The only real rockstar thing she did was buy a turtle for the local park's pond. She went to visit it most days.
Anyway, it was a reason for her exasperation after the match against Kohnhead. It was in a sense the game of her life. She came off the bench after 70 minutes, Brenecia 1-0 down and floundering. With her first touch she forced Sanders into a sprawling save, with her first real spell of possession she carved Rodar apart and cut back for Garrard to drive home the leveller, and in injury time, she arced a beautiful shot over two defenders and past Sanders' late, desperate dive, fingertips only brushing on its way through.
Cue Twii exploding. Cue the articles. And cue, of course, calls for Sienna Fallon's head when Fortune Russell started against Geisenfried and the Patriots lost 1-0, albeit against one of the strongest nominally unranked sides out there. Byrne's skinny arse stayed glued to that bench all night.
So it was, she figured, the chivalrous thing to do to front up to the press, find an interviewer and tell them, flatly, that the right calls were made, and that Fortune Russell was a better player than her.

This opinion wasn't shared by many people. Certainly not her army of simps, some of whom believed it was a conspiracy, others arguably more insufferable saying that Byrne was just saying it because she was a consummate professional who didn't want her obvious superiority to split the team in half.
And, she found out a month later, it wasn't shared by Sienna Fallon. Byrne would start in the must-win crunch tie against Huelavia, which would likely make the difference between first and third. The Patriots had won all their home matches to date, but conceded four in the reverse fixture. As one of the few sides to have qualified for the last several World Cups, failure wasn't on the cards. It wasn't like Brenecia as a country had much else to take pride in.
No pressure, then...

"Six points from six in the last international and it is still looking very unlikely that the Marauders are going to be able to pull themselves out of the second place spot in the group that their midqualifying funk has put them into, even staving off a phenomenal effort by Gyatso-kai in the Hatire Memorial to try and steal more points from the Marauders, after the side was held against them in the reverse fixture."

"You have to give it to Vdara, I doubt many could have foreseen them only losing twice in the entire qualifying campaign, which is what looks like will be the case with them having a fairly easy end to their campaign. If they do not win out at this point, I will be completely and utterly shocked, and even if they do drop points from the last three matches, they need to drop points in two of their last three games and the Marauders still will need to win out in order to take the group. You would have a really difficult time believing that the side is currently ranked third in the world with them having to fight just to make it into the playoffs, as Yuezhou still has an outside chance of overtaking the team if they falter more here at the end of the qualifiers."

"It has been a difficult campaign for a lot of top seeds this tournament, for whatever reason the top teams are not quite performing quite as well as one might have believed. Maybe the level of competition is just that much better during this cycle, maybe there is a lot of roster turnover, whatever the case may be there has been a significant amount of trouble. While this does not mean that all first seeds are performing badly and are unlikely to qualify, but there have been quite a few struggles as well as more than a handful of very unexpected performances from teams that no one would have seen coming when the draw for the qualifiers was made. There is still three matches to go and perhaps things shift around in the high pressure moments, but there will be plenty of reflection on this campaign for several managers and teams, especially when those who do qualify have a moment to reflect to try and prepare themselves for the Finals themselves."

"That is quite true, which is going to be very interesting for the Marauders if they do end up in the playoffs or if they manage to sneak themselves into the group title or perhaps even be one of those best second placed teams that also qualify directly into the Finals. Trying to figure out what exactly has gone wrong in the second half of the campaign when compared to how well things were going in the first half will make for a lot of soul searching as well as reviewing the footage. On the surface it seems like a few teams have figured out how to exploit the three at the back system that the side is known for, but there were times when the tactics and formation were working excellently. Maybe it is just that in the second go around that the opposition was more prepared for the sort of experience they were going to have when playing against the Marauders, maybe some were awestruck in that first match. It is hard to say and ultimately is not likely to matter, but it is well worth the wonder and reflection on what can be done differently to be better moving forward."

"Aye, at this point we have to rely on hope that the Marauders can grind out a few more results and that somehow that Vdara does drop points or that they can sneak into those second placed automatic qualifying positions. While neither looks likely at this point and time, if there is anything that the second half of the campaign has definitely made abundantly clear to the group, anything can happy on any given matchday and that nothing need be taken for granted."

“What do you think?”

“Hmm. I’m not saying it doesn’t have a certain poetry to it, but as a memoir…”

“You don’t think people will like it?”

“I think people will be surprised that your memoir is just three words written over and over again in what I really hope is your own fæces, and not any mention of the goals you’ve scored or the titles you’ve won or your family…”

“Family!? Pah!”

Petter Erlingsson wheeled around. Hrærekur Jvarsson had not seen his old friend like this before. Normally Petter was impeccably groomed – his pre-match hair routine had always been the subject of gentle ribbing; now, it stuck out at random angles like a dishevelled heap of straw had landed on his head. Blazing eyes bugged out red-raw, the left larger than the right. He was unshaven, unwashed, and wearing what appeared to be one of his wife’s old housecoats with the sleeves cut off.

“What family? That whore of a wife he took from me?”

Maybe it was his ex-wife’s housecoat.

“My sisters? Both my sisters? Do you know, there are times I’m actually happy my mother, rest her soul, passed away? Means there’s at least one member of my family he hasn’t f-”

“OK, so maybe don’t mention the family. But what about Steinaux? All those years together – MVP, Golden Boot, the double, the three-peat…”

“Worthless! All of it, worthless! What does any of it matter now? Have you seen this? Have you seen this!?”

Petter waved a newspaper in Hrærekur’s face.

Þórhallursson to lead Snow Wolves side on the verge of history

Græntfjall are in the strongest position they have ever been to challenge for a first World Cup qualification berth after a surprise win over The Holy Empire extended their lead in Group 7. Striker Jason Þórhallursson, who scored in the victory to take his career goal tally to 70 in blue-and-white, will captain the team for their games against Acastanha and Equestria after regular captain Hjörleifur Reynarsson was ruled out with an abdominal strain. Reynarsson has led one of the strongest defenses across the World Cup qualifying groups and played every single minute of the last 6 games, including a 400+ minute stretch without conceding a goal, but failed a fitness test ahead of the first of two matches that could decide Græntfjall’s hopes.

Þórhallursson, who has roared back into form in recent weeks after struggling to impact the first half of qualifying, was voted captain by his teammates after vice-captain Emeli Vilbertsdóttir declined the honor. “This means more to me than any trophy,” said Þórhallursson, “And I aim to do the office of captain proud.” Þórhallursson’s girlfriend, Aurora Tristansdóttir (second cousin once removed of Steinaux club captain Petter Erlingsson), said she was “very proud” of him, adding: “It really goes to show the team are putting their faith in the country’s greatest striker at this moment.”

As Petter rage-stroked in the other room, Hrærekur could hear as he smashed up his wife’s collection of porcelain dolls with a golf club.

Ex-wife’s.

He resumed reading the paper.

Coach Igrene Cantor is facing criticism for recalling to the squad veteran defensive midfielder Kalle Bjørnsson, once a key contributor to the Snow Wolves but increasingly out of favor owing to disciplinary issues, a failure to polish his skills, and that time he accidentally broke someone in half, ahead of the qualification-deciding clashes. “I think it’s a negative move, a defensive one. Instead of bolstering the squad with attacking players who can go out and win a World Cup spot for her, she’s bringing a defensive stopper,” said veteran football journalist Olle Tobiasson. “[Bjørnsson] can play an important role for us and I’m keeping all options on deck,” said Cantor at a press conference.

“Good for Kalle!” mumbled Hrærekur. Petter had stomped back into the room. He was bleeding from his palms: apparently the golf club had broken and he’d smashed the last few dolls bare-handed.

“Petter, man, you don’t look well. This isn’t healthy. You need to get help. You invited me over, I thought we were going to talk about your memoir…”

Petter pointed to the writing on the wall.

“That’s not a memoir. A memoir is about stuff you’ve actually done.”

“Oh, I see!” Petter laughed maniacally. “Well, we can’t go having me make a liar of myself, can we!? I guess I’ll just have to make sure I actually do it before putting it before putting it in my book.”

“Do what?”

Petter leaned in close. His crazy eyes were boggling and his breath stank of wodka and despair.

An Esteemed Web Blog Series Thing: The Molecular Level Ep. 4 | Legend: --- Subbing in for Arturo Vitriol is Bifiat Eaar Althalh

--- » It’s been a few hundred moons, but as we live out every day there are also new excuses to be found, possessed, and utilized. My close friend who noted that one Geektopian person out of sixteen in a room are close friends with Aimenans such as I had come up with one such excuse that is actually mostly believable given the time of year — Vitriol says that three municipal parks that have trails over 15 miles long have opened in Mukladrue, which I would say is pretty close to his home in Lito given his information of the drive being thirty five minutes given ones freedom from the undesirable clutches of rush hour traffic (mind you, Arturo likes to go out for an evening jog rather than a morning one). Even though us Geektopians are built different, up to the present time and most likely long into the future it’ll take a while to walk fifteen miles on three different occasions, so I’d say he’ll take three weeks. The blog badass told me I could write one to two written works regarding The Molecular Level, but I would say I don’t deserve it because this episode is going to cover two molecules that seem to be more useful than most Arturo Vitriol’s covered. As a matter of fact, I’d say I’m pretty busy writing for the Biology section of Geektivities, so I hired a third string blogger who worked for a rival gazette by the name of The Blot. She’s called Bitith Earus Maf, and of course she isnt from Geektopia, silly. In that country, women are practically non existent, with asexual reproduction still the ever popular means of surviving one’s family among one man since the birthquake crisis of 2507 which essentially halved an expecting mother’s lifespan every time they birthed a beautiful youngin, the mothers also would pass down this trait of a half life to their daughters, this surely ensuring the death of many families which had mothers or women in them. It’s why the country’s a melting pot of various cultures and nations, and though Geektopians hate to be paired with Aimenans, it’s for the best when it comes to having a sizable populace compared to outer nations in Kwandoa.

--- » Firstly, the etymology of dopamine is fissured into two parts, the prefix dop originating in the amino acid whose elements make up every letter out of the four. Then onto the second part of the word, -amine, which is originated from the English language. The meaning or definition of the suffix derives itself in compounds that split from ammonia— these compounds being some of the primaries aniline, methylamine, and 1-propylamene as well as the secondary compounds of ammonia that are diethylamene and pyrrolidine. Something that you might want to know is that ammonia is sort of a chemical successor to nitrogen, which as we know is a very explosive element. So although these amines’ properties seem far gone from nitrogen’s own, the amines theirselves are only two chemical generations away from NH3 if one thinks about it.

--- » The story of this glamorous chemical goes (allegedly) quite a far few steps into the past, with archaeologists at the Bath Salt Flats region in Islas Cardinales having discovered a totally untreaded area of the desert which also inhibited frenzied camel stamps coming from eight millennium ago, in the null thousands. It is believed that Islamic hodge-podges of people developed faster and more alacritously into trading civilizations no thanks to these indigenous groups of families’ surroundings looking like that of a Settlers of Catan board. With the collecting of quarries of stone, fields of corn, and soy beans transforming into a regional pastime, trade routes between the five huge Muslim civilizations that would endure to the present time would inevitably go great guns. A huge liability of the population that seemed to have been only good at negotiating, riding camels, and appraising items to possess knowledge that would deem goods to be counterfeit or completely clear of this were deployed by each of the five city states. It was until quite recently even speculated that the camels were forcibly drugged with what many call the “pleasure chemical” that is dopamine, and the evidence which was brought forth to the public eye all but confirms this now.

--- » The production of complex molecules within living organisms or cells which exists to be a definition of biosynthesis requires a very complicated explanation on the part of Dopamine. L-tyrosine starts this two-step chemical modus operandi by it haphazardly and quite carelessly letting a second phenol troupe, or should I say GROUP, into the benzene ring. The l-tyrosine and that one phenol group which the former let into their benzene disc get happily married and settle a child in the chemical that is named levodopa. More commonly (mind you), this is called L-dopa. The enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase acts as a catalyst to this reaction although it doesn’t in production of dopamine and removal of the acid group which is also carboxylic from the L-dopa. This too is a catalysed process characterized by the enzyme dopa decarboxylase’s appearance.

--- » How this biosynthesis which I have just explained has to do with Parkinson’s disease is through the loose relation of dopamine which is talked thoroughly about in both subjects. This condition doesn’t just occur through shakiness in the hands, although this is mostly how it is troped in a more common context — this is a negative catalyst as far as talking or swallowing goes. Someone might be made fun of for stuttering for this affliction? Isn’t that the worst? PD is birthed through a subject and complete impoverishment of nerve cells that are prerequisites to dopamine really even working at all, a more specific description of this effect of absolute dopamine eradication being explained and demonstrated through parts of the brain being immobile when it comes to doing their part in the body as well as less dopamine being produced throughout the body.

--- » The physical element of dope I can only see through a pill bottle made by the drug company whose name is Cances. Listen when I say you really can’t be and shouldn’t be arsed to take too much of this pleasure stimulant. The neurotransmitter being connected to one taking too much of it is subject to rapidly deteriorating mental conditions that hauls one down to thinking like a person who is under ten years of age. Being more competitive, aggressiveness, having abysmal impulse and self control, ADHD, binging, drinking, smoking, and other addictions can appear (to some) completely out of the blue!

--- » Onto Vitamin K, then. Its really just the name for a group of molecules which act in similar ways to Vitamin K. These five are of the essence when it comes to helping make proteins which are effective in the ways of blood clotting. These five types are quite genetically subscripted from one to five, with two out of these fives origins existing in nature and three being man-made molecules. To some degree of certainty,
chemists in this continent are sure that their opinions regarding where the chemicals are attached to is surefire, or at least one of the chemicals — this being the first one, K1, has a phytyl group that is allegedly found in high doses on the leafy stalks of fellow vegetables cabbage, broccoli, spinach, kale, and romaine. If you’re wondering why a chemical which is known for its usefulness regarding blood clotting would exist in greens such as these, then you’re obviously not a botanist in Geektopia. In the center of Lito and areas such as Mordecai and Nrina exist greenwood which doesn’t tail out and makes a complete circle. These plants within the circle of shrubbery have blood circulatory systems similar to that of human organisms, the main differences being a lack of platelets within the asparatus of this blood system as well as physical differentiations in the color of blood (which takes on a hue of radish purple) and the taste of plants which are naturally produced in circufos (circular forests) having one too many similarities to the taste of salt.

--- » Ooh, that’s rough. Looks like Geektopia have crashed out of the qualifiers for a second time on the trot, the score that places us out of contention for the later rounds is against Mercedini, as we’ve conceded five. Well, qualification was really almost never a guarantee from the end of 87, I’d be more surprised if Hojnacki was sacked as his presence has only just been announced by the board which belongs to GFF.

--- » I hope they knew what they were doing. I mean, appointing someone who endorsed the use of steroids in a small-town gymnasium?! Sounds to me he has almost no knowledge of tactics besides the ones handed down to him. It’s almost an impossibility to better Dingledines impervious record, much less come after him. This qualification run, though, was very telling. We rose up from a fifth place finish at 88 qualifying Group 6 to third place in this qualifying edition, which is within reach of a play off spot. Suffice to say, our Greens absolutely have to champion a better placement than exiting the Cup of Harmony group stages under this bozo, that is, if they are invited.

XV
DEFENSIVE DUTIES

Salahudin traveled to Yuezhou with the national team squad a bit down after the 5-1 trashing at home at the hands of Vdara. The last time he checked his social media accounts was at the dressing room in the Federal Stadium after the full-time whistle against Vdara. Too many hate comments. As usual, he ignored it. But this time, he also refused to check his social media accounts at all after that match. Not even after the 0-0 commendable draw at Yuezhou.

Salahudin who had to do more defensive duties in Yuezhou as they got dominated the whole match didn't get a single chance on goal. But the match lifted the morale of the whole squad a little bit including Salahudin. They were very disciplined defending as a unit for the whole 90 minutes plus additional time. For Salahudin, he was happy that they managed to endure the onslaught from Yuezhou but more so happy that the match ended. This is because Salahudin hates defending.

Salahudin is not the bravest type of player. He will pull out of 50/50 challenge every time. The trauma of getting in a freak car accident in his childhood was still on his head. The accident caused him to forget about playing football for a few years and for someone who only wants to play football in his life, he didn't want a repeat of that. He became more protective of his legs after the accident. So when the final whistle was blown in Yuezhou, Salahudin was the most relieved person on earth, 1 valuable point away at a much stronger side and his legs still intact.

The same legs then went on to score a hat-trick in the 3-0 victory over Aix les Filles at home a few days after the match against Yuezhou.

Things Got Complicated

Written by: Christian Congo
07/05/1984 – 11:41 P.M.

Despite recovering from a harsh window where Huayramarca was able to only gather a point, now getting three points, the Condors are in a delicate situation in this crunch time, as they must do their job in order to progress, but it doesn’t depend only on them, they depend on certain scores to happen in order to see the team soaring back into second place. Three matches pending, decisive matches, considered by many as “World Cup Finals” are approaching, there’s no room for mistake for this team if they want to get into playoffs.

Back at home after an entire window away, the Condors received Delaclava at Guayaquil with a sunny weather out there, the fans were rejoicing outside the stadium and entered a bit earlier than expected in order to grab the best seating positions or to support the Condors when arriving to the Estadio Metropolitano del Guayas. The Condors arrived with pressure, as they needed to get some points in order to not let escape Squornshelan Remnant States, Tumbra or Eraman in the fight for the playoff spot in the Group 9 of the World Cup Qualifiers; Omar Caicedo said in a previous press conference that the team was in “desperate need to get points” so, some changes were expected, not by names but by roles and overall strategy terms.

Caicedo bet by moving the defenders’ line almost into the half of the pitch, in an attempt to suffocate the Delaclavan players as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Johannes Detmer, the experienced Delaclavan manager fielded a solid 3-5-2 aiming for keeping things as intricated as possible in the midfield and stop the Huayramarcan offensive attempts from that zone. The teams jumped to the field and the tactical scheme was evidenced from both sides, it’d be a nice duel in the middle as it seemed that they would fight as much as possible for the ball.

The game started and the Delaclavans had the ball possession from the very beginning, trying to generate some dangerous occasions against Juan Mamani’s goal. At the 8th minute, a cross coming from Varlam Kovalev was enough for Lukas Meyer, the striker controlled the ball with his chest, passed the ball to Dathan Ingram who passed the ball back to Meyer, the striker now shot in the lower left corner of Mamani’s goal, beating him and scoring the 0-1 for the visitors much for the chagrin of the local fans.

Huayramarca’s reaction was surprising, only one minute later, Nicolás Allauca saw a distracted Delaclavan midfield, the player passed the ball to Ian Mamani and the captain shot towards George Ross’ goal, the keeper deflected and sent the ball to corner. Gabriel Sayritupac kicked the ball and found Felipe Fernández’s head, who nodded and sent the ball into Ross goal to equalize the match just one minute later.

After that, Huayramarca took possession of the ball for a long period of time, insisting on breaking the Delaclavan defense no matter what, Omar Caicedo words came to mind of the players “I don’t care of anything, I just want to outscore them” Ian Mamani’s passes were precise, but the wingers weren’t experiencing their best afternoon, both Gabriel Sayritupac and Abraham Mendoza received nice passes and did good in depth runs such as the ones made at the 14th and 19th minute of the match, but their crosses weren’t effective and didn’t found Bryan Tello, instead, were blocked by Minotauro Meñica and Josh Torres, both wingers sent the ball to the corner, creating some chances but not being exploited at all by the Condors, as Orlando Mina and Bryan Tello took advantage of their heights but failed to do contact with the ball properly.

The ball possession was highly inclined for Huayramarca during the first 25 minutes, 60 to 40% respectively and a somewhat decent 76% pass precision for the Condors, there was room for improvement at the last touch, something that the wingers were failing constantly. Meanwhile, the Delaclavans wouldn’t let go things slip away easily, as they would have a chance at the 28th minute, as Varlam Kovalev would run deep through the wing, dribbling Carlos Vilca in the process and passing the ball backwards to Lukas Meyer, the Delaclavan striker rotated 180° and shot, Juan Mamani blocked it and Carlos Vilca recovered the ball.

A swift counterattack from Sayritupac helped the Condors to reach the area, as the Condor enclosed near the out of bounds line, he smashed the ball against Pavel Cicak, earning a corner for the Team. Sayritupac kicked the ball and crossed it to Orlando Mina, the tall midfielder nodded the ball to the second post and Carlos Vilca was there, he swept and sent the ball into the goal to score the second Huayramarcan goal. 2-1, but there wasn’t a sign to relax nor to resign attacking from both sides, instead, it was matter of time for more action.

At the 36th minute, Delaclava attempted what they did at the 28th minute, another pass from Kazuo Martin, the midfielder filtered a ball for Kovalev, the winger decided this time to enter to the box and then passing a ball backwards to Meyer, the striker was at the right moment to shot to the first post and beat Juan Mamani, as the keeper didn’t expect a shot going right there. Rülândéá Kôstä’s, new goalkeeper stared at his defenders asking them for more order and control of the offensive scenarios proposed by Delaclava. Still, Mamani’s anger would calm up at the 42nd minute, as he would receive a ball from Kevin Quispe, the keeper kicked the ball far away and Bryan Tello found it, the striker controlled it and struggled to defeat Cicak via force, Tello got 1v1 against Ross and the Condor chipped the ball over him, 3-2 for Huayramarca right when they needed it the most.

Half time, Huayramarca had to come from behind and then get ahead after the Delaclavans equalized, Omar Caicedo was, by the moment, making what he wanted, to outscore the rival no matter what. By the moment, it was matter to gather the most points possible, styles didn’t matter and the result was explaining it well. Luciano Olaya, Andrés Alcabú and Saúl Castillo entered to the pitch, as they substituted Carlos Vilca, Santiago Chumacero and Bryan Tello, this movements were focused to preserve the team for the hardest match of the window, as they had to visit Nephara for the next match.

Caicedo movements proved to be a bit risky, as the Delaclavans gained control of the match as soon as it started, Meñica crossed a ball at the 50th minute to Ben Romeijn, the Delaclavan midfielder controlled the ball and passed it to Malcolm Harvey, who paired up with Kent Lindblad, both players completed each other and arrived to the area, then a pass to Ingram and Juan Mamani anticipated it, as he tackled and passed the ball to Andrés Alcabú. The older of the Mamani got inspired after said intervention, that would be key to hold up Delaclava for a while, as another attempt at the 57th minute would prove, Romeijn to Ingram, the striker hit a nice volley and Juan was able to block it and send the ball to corner.

The stretch from the 60th to the 70th minute would prove crucial in this match, as Huayramarca recovered the ball and the wing of Sayritupac would be lethal. Harvey would suffer as a succession of passes from Ian Mamani and Sayritupac would leave him behind, Sayritupac entered in the box and shot to the right post, Ross wasn’t able to stop the shot and Huayramarca found the 4-2 at the 62nd minute. At the 68th minute, a cross from Mendoza to Sayritupac would let the winger receive the ball and pass it to Castillo, the striker passed the ball back to Sayritupac and the winger placed a shot at the upper right post to make it 5-2 for the Condors, who were soaring by then and Omar Caicedo was trying to calm himself.

The Condors were playing that football reminiscent of the first half of this World Cup Qualifiers, fast-paced, accurate passing and possession focused, they were strangling the Delaclavan midfield nicely, hence they got a surprising ten minutes span where they managed to increase their lead by two goals. Still, there was more stuff into the surprise box for Huayramarca, at the 79th minute, a cross from Gabriel Sayritupac went a bit wide, something that caused Ross to confuse and decided to sent the ball to corner, as the cross went like a shot to goal. Ian Mamani crossed the ball lowly, Andrés Alcabú ninja’d the Delaclavan defense and shot to the left post, beating Ross and scoring the 6th goal for Huayramarca.

Delaclava had another option during the stoppage time, Ingram took a chance and shot to goal, Mamani deflected it and sent to corner. Harvey sent the ball to the box and Meñica scored the last goal of the match, 6-3 for Huayramarca in a match where their best version appeared once again.

The trip to Nephara was a long one for the Condors, an 18 hours long haul to Corvistone and then to Treason to be at the Gauntlet. The intimidating atmosphere was crowned with the Godhead, a figure resembling the historic manager of the Cormorants, Gethin Ramsey, father of their current manager Triffid Ramsey. Flares lightened up Ramsey’s mouth and made him apparently “smoke”, a great tifo by the Cormorants fans honoring one of their finest people in their history.

As expected, Huayramarca didn’t had the initiative of the match, the Nepharim wanted to get a score that would send them far away at the top of the leaderboard and keep them close to the Qualification for the World Cup Finals. Considine and Reed were being deadly effective facing 1v1 against Vilca and Fernández, they were being constantly dribbled and outpaced by the Cormorants, still, their first clear chance came at the 18th minute, where Reed passed fast to Basilisk, then the striker to Considine who shot but Juan Mamani kept the ball between his hands, laid on floor and killed some seconds. Huayramarca would have some opportunities, such as this one at the 26th minute, where Gabriel Sayritupac entered in the box, crossed the ball to Ian Mamani, then the midfielder passed it to Mendoza who shot just some centimeters wide from Provost’s goal.

Huayramarca wasn’t able to hold possession, the Nepharim squad had a 66-34% and an impressive 95% pass precision rate, compared to the small 81% that Huayramarca had. This data would be proven at the 33rd minute, where Cromwell passed a quick succession of balls with Koehrer, the latter filtered a pass to Considine, the winger was able to get into the box, dribbled Kevin Quispe and shot strong enough to beat Juan Mamani to score the decisive 1-0 for the locals.

Huayramarca wouldn’t have more chances during the first half, as they were trying to stop the Nepharim onslaught during the first half, as Considine kept trying to break the defensive block that Omar Caicedo put for this match. Juan Mamani saved a ball at the 45th minute, as Basilisk nodded the ball and sent it to the left post, Mamani dived and controlled it.

Omar Caicedo made three substitutions as he decided to put Andrés Alcabú, Luciano Olaya and Joshua Quispe for Santiago Chumacero, Carlos Vilca and Nicolás Allauca, since they weren’t performing in the best of their versions that we are used to know from them. With the best players on pitch, Huayramarca tried to keep cautious in order to avoid getting thrashed at the Gauntlet, instead, opted for counterattacking for the second half. Ian Mamani passed the ball to Gabriel Sayritupac at the 56th minute, then to Bryan Tello, the striker received the ball and shot, beating Provost, but the goal was disallowed because Tello controlled the ball with his arm, hence, considered as a handball.

Glevinger passed the ball to Timekeeper at the 65th, the Nepharim moved and crossed to Reed. In a swift movement, Reed dribbled Luciano Olaya and get into the area, the winger shot but Ian Mamani controlled it. The same conditions found during the first half were the ones happening during the second half, Nephara trying to kill Huayramarca for good and the Condors trying to resist and try to be deadly effective with a counter.

At the 70th minute, Considine passed the ball to Cromwell, then he tested Juan Mamani in order to score a second goal from distance, the shot went to the crossbar, Basilisk dived to nod the ball but Kevin Quispe jumped in order to sent it away, but he hit hard on the floor, hence, he had to be attended by medical staff in order to letting him continue in the match.

Huayramarca would have the final say during the match, as the Condors would have two opportunities during the final ten minutes. The flurry started with Gabriel Sayritupac at the 83rd minute, he crossed a ball to Abraham Mendoza, the winger waited some time and passed the ball to Joshua Quispe, the midfielder received the ball and shot, Provost deflected it, then Tello shot once again but Provost was faster to react and saved the ball.

The Condors had the clearest chance of them at the 91st minute, where Bryan Tello collected a cross, nodded the ball, Provost wasn’t able to deflect it, went to the line but Bruhn was able to kick the ball away from goal much to the regret of the striker of the Condors. Still, getting a 1-0 wasn’t the worst of the scenarios, but helped Tumbra to get away three points in the fight for second place.

Omar Caicedo said some spicy words in the press conference: “The team has improved, that’s a fact. It’s good that they woke up at the right moment, since we have three ‘World Cup Finals’ pending, specially that one against Tumbra at Serrapince Stadium, but let’s go step by step, we have to face Martune and do it boldly, we need to be confident on us and be efficient, style doesn’t matter, it’s resolution time and we should be focused in performing in a resolute way.”

To end the conference, Gabriel Sayritupac said: “We are a team and we have a nation behind us, 36 million souls supporting us, we will try to not let them fall. As the Manager said, it’s crunch time and we must be responsible to fix the mistakes done in the past, especially those against Squornshelan Remnant States and Ottoman Syldavia, it’s today or today, no more options, we are adults and we are responsible to fix what we caused during that window”. “We must be calm, going step by step is our mindset, Martune is first, then Tumbra and lastly République Qalactienne, we must enjoy this trip to the top!”

Now back in print after a brief ten-year hiatus!

Seven fans in the hospital after gouging own eyes out after la Vherderoja's goalless draw with Atheara

Last night was a tragic night for both Farf fans and neutral onlookers, as la Vherderoja relatively high-stakes match against Atheara turned out to be one of the most boring affairs the Glorious Southwestern side took part in in, at least, the last ten years. Perhaps displaying too much respect for his opponents—or so we thought as fans, before watching the game unfold—Lele Manguele chose to full more or less a full-strength eleven to put to bed any doubts over whether Farfadillis would qualify for its twenty-first consecutive World Cup. Doubts were not put to bed.

Ibrelaná, Exihosahar, Khavarin, Ànáxímane, Nørgaard, Moloses, Xüwân, Gallegas, Alxíkí, (Edmün) Çídh and Bastanchury. Yes, of the national team's three best players—Faragó rue Cazade, Ígnîgo Çí Xôrí and Edmün Çídh—only one was on the pitch. But, besides that, every single starter played. Players like Gallegas and Alxíkí, generally considered World Class™, spent ninety excruciating minutes fruitless runs down the flanks or through the center, either losing the ball in the process or going for aimless crosses which amounted to nothing. What's more, neither we nor whatever poor neutral fans who dared tune into this game got the excitement of, at least, watching our opponents take the game to us: the entire first half was, essentially, Farfadillis trying and failing to penetrate an admittedly solid Athearan defense, with the Anaian side barely getting past the halfway line throughout.

The second half changed one thing: which side each team was playing on. The rest? Pretty much the same. Manguele tried to switch things up with his substitutions. This time, they were fairly reasonable: he brought on Röémün Çídh for Bastanchury, probably figuring that brute strength might serve him better than speed, as well as Böávêntür Âgínsôgnó for Tè Xüwân, probably realizing that a takilante was not needed to keep control of the game. Âgínsôgnó's creativity changed the game completely, which is to say made us finally register a shot on target in the seventieth minute. The young Rulandese attacking midfielder dribbled past two players, then set up an incoming Emiliano Gallegas, who fired straight into Mugel Krygorf's hands. Edmün Çídh pounced on the rebound. He, too, fired straight into Mugel Krygorf's hands. These would be the only two shots la Vherderoja would register in this match.

Atheara, for their part, were probably content to see out the draw. They did not register a shot, nevermind a shot on target, but it's not clear they even tried to. However, they managed to resist the Farf onslaught—if you could call it that—for ninety minutes, and deserve credit for that. In fact, they made it not look that hard. They would not look out of place at the World Cup (either that, or we would).

Off-the-pitch, there was the unfortunate incident of seven Farf fans independently gouging their own eyes out with spoons (yes, they all used spoons) at different points in the match. Fernando Morgoño, 35 years old, was the first to do so after an egregiously misplaced pass by Ànáxímane in the twenty-third minutes. He'd prove to be a visionary of sorts, as the next Farf to gouge their own eyes out would only do so a good fifty minutes later, after Gallegas' fifth wayward cross of the night.

Hebitaka 2–1 Poafmersia
Lineup (3-4-3): Nicole Potts; Nasri Sanchez, Simone Gori, Hollis Stephenson; Dargis Walshor, Nero Wood, Arnold Shwentin, Whitney Rios; Aleka Dufour, Makana Tuft, Agapito Murphy

OOC: The Musical Bridge will be taking a back seat, because I have simply ran out of momentum to write a long arc for it. Will be starting a new arc going into the end of the WCQs and other competitions, as this acts as a stopper.

After 2 seasons of being in near god-like performance in the World Cup, reaching the knockout stages on both attempts, Adnan Suliaha realises that his team messed up too many opportunities and now has to rely on a miracle to get into the playoffs. That was after a shock defeat away at Hebitaka, a result that was totally unexpected, despite their poor performances throughout the World Cup.

The newer generation of players, have, by now, stepped up, and clearly, the problems in offence was trying to fit a bunch of talented players into the squad. With at least 6-7 options for the forward positions, Poafmersia was expected to be able to score quite a number of goals, and make sure that they can at least hold the top 2 positions more easily than they previously thought to be. The statistics, however, aren't exactly in the team's favour, and Makana Tuft was extremely upset with himself for not showing any performance against Hebitaka, failing to get hold any shots on goal. "If we won against Hebitaka, I would believe that the race for at least the second spot would be on. And that we can still maintain our chance of fighting back through the playoffs. I am willing to take full responsibility for this loss," he said as he apologised to the visting fans.

Group 10 as at Matchday 15
# Group 10 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Mytanija 15 11 2 2 34 18 +16 35
2 Siovanija and Teusland 15 9 4 2 34 23 +11 31
3 Poafmersia 15 9 2 4 26 16 +10 29

Third seeds Mytanija is going to be able to squeeze through to the finals, with 2 wins at The Sarian and home against Yasquia enough to secure top spot. 4 points would be enough to maintain top 2, though the tight playoff race means it is very difficult to maintain the results. Second seeds Siovanija and Teusland will play Hebitaka at home and then The Kytler Peninsulae away, two games they drew in the reverse fixture. The Red Panjias will be going all in on their final 3 games, with a home game against The Kytler Peninsulae, a trip to South India, and then at home to Rangers FC ending their campaign. On paper, Poafmersia has the easiest fixture list while Mytanija has the hardest, though the amount of point disparity is definitely advantegous to Mytanija.

Makana Tuft, Aleka Dufour and Iulianus Innocenti stayed back at the field following the final training session ahead of the game against The Kytler Peninsulae. They were discussing how to improve their scoring and team play to ensure that the team can rake up the goals. It seems to be the biggest problem plaguing the team this time, who typically scores lots of goals, but this time, could only manage 26 in 15 games, probably one of the lower numbers in Poafmersia's history. As compared to the other 2 teams, who scored 34 goals, it definitely was a far cry.

Makana: "You know, I am wondering whether I should move towards the center right position to give you the central position you are more used to, Iulianus. I am utterly worried that the next few teams will use what Mytanija and Hebitaka has been doing, which is to shut me off by sending 1 player to mark me personally. Like a personal assistant from the opposition team."

Iulianus: "The correct strategy would be for us to take over your scoring duties and push forward on our own, accord, yes?"

Makana: "Yeah, but the midfield seems to be struggling quite a bit over the past 3 goals, and I am wondering whether we are not helping in some way or other."

For the strikers, who seems to have lost the form that propelled them to win their qualification group last cycle, they were really desparate to see how they can keep up the pressure in front. The entire team seems to have been losing momentum with the losses, and any further loss in momentum will result in the horrors of World Cup 86, where they had the tempo in their hands, but went 6 games winless, and lost the 2nd spot to Audioslavia. It was heartbreak especially for Makana Tuft, who was already being marked as Shakira Handris' substitute that time 6 years ago, and the main strikers all stayed back after learning of their elimination to cry over not scoring enough goals. Even though that was clearly not their fault, because the defence was still leaking quite a bit of goals. This time, the defence is doing slightly better than expected, so the burden definitely falls back on the offence.

"Coach said that they have plans for some tactical reshuffle for the last 3 games," said Makana Tuft, "but honestly, now we not just have to win, we have to improve our goal difference. We need to overcome a goal difference against Siovanija and Teusland, because relying on them to drop points is not enough, given that the only tricky tie theoretically is against Hebitaka." He paused for a while, but Iulianus Innocenti clearly knows how to continue. "We should make it clear, scoring goals is our first priority." The three of them nodded in agreement.

It is all in or nothing.

Sgt. Ansehelm was getting to rather like his KRF counterpart, Momodu Soley. On the long road out, they'd talked a lot about family, what they'd left behind. Soley was a decent sort, with a farm and three goats and four wives and an uncountable torrent of children, and Ansehelm was a Laithman, a rare rural homesteader surrounded most of the time by urban soldiers who thought a cow was just wild beef.
So it was a pity that Ansehelm's judgement of him and his troops as soldiers was that they were, frankly, piss.
The Forward Expeditionary Brigade could have turned a war alone in, perhaps, a city-state, but close to six thousand in a land of 25 million was a drop in the bucket. The popular imagination may have seen them as an unstoppable burning thrust through the KFF lines, and perhaps that was even the image in the Margravine's mind's eye, but they were going to need more bodies to catch bullets and help secure points.
And so about a third of the FEB hung behind, did what they could to train and improve and, hopefully, beat the war crimes out of the KRF. It would have been more, but there'd been an immediate need to hold back what had seemed an unstoppable KFF advance in the south. Most of the forces - including the whole of the 2nd Snakebites - went there, taking a roughly equal number of local forces under their wing. While the bulk of those hung back and kept the line, Ansehelm's squad - and Soley's with his - were set to act as probes and advanced scouts, hoping their superior equipment and training would help them consistently outmaneuvre KFF pickets.
The KRF equipment was ramshackle, not much could be done about that. Ansehelm had done what he could to at least make sure Soley's men had enough ammunition, and sidearms in case their assault rifles jammed. But, Christ, the men didn't even know how to march properly! They just... walked, and there was a world of difference between walking and keeping up the kind of mechanical, automatic pace that would keep you moving for 16 hours without rest. Their formation was loose when it should be tight and clustered up when it should be staggered, and personal disputes kept flaring up. A man wouldn't listen to Soley, so Ansehelm made a calculated decision to lay him out with the butt of his rifle. They'd been told to leave KRF discipline to KRF officers, but after that, the man never said a thing.
At least they listened to Soley, now, but God knew what would happen when...
Ansehelm's comms crackled with the melodious voice of Kit Kendall. She always sounded bored, and always had a soft smile, even when the firing had started. "Boss, there's OpFor coming up. Appear to be coming through in three distinct sections."
Ansehelm licked his lips. Probably thirty to forty men in scrubland. "What's your position?"
"Concealed. We have an excellent vantage. They're just walking either side of the highway under the ridge. They have some cover, but only if they fall back. No sign they suspect a thing. One of them has a rather jaunty hat, and a gold-plated pistol."
"Lay off the colour commentary."
"He's an officer, I'm saying, and I've a clean shot. They're headed towards the petrol station. Permission to engage?"
"Stand by." He looked at Sgt. Soley. "Could be forty men out there. Get in contact with your boss, see if any of your boys are nearby." Without waiting for a response, he talked to his own boss. Got confirmation. They couldn't just let three sections glide into what had become a serious checkpoint, one already taken and retaken three or four times. It was in KRF hands for now, but they were stretched so thin there were just eight men there, for show more than anything.
Orders were to destroy them. "And congratulations, Sergeant. You're the first Nepharan soldiers to see action."
"Yeah, lucky us." He hustled back to Soley. "Sergeant, between us, which of your officers do you trust more?"
"I trust them both. Camara's reliable. Sidibeh's fearless."
Ansehelm bit his lip, considering. "Camara better be fucking both on the night. Right, get Sidibeh's squad onto that ridge, far side. They don't fire until we do. Scale's on the left, we're in the middle. Camara goes with Tanzi-- with Tanzer, anchors the near end. When we pin them down, Tanzer and him will sweep down and outmaneuvre their position. No time to disagree, lay out the orders, then follow me."
"Bad news, boss," said Kendall dreamily. "They got a technical coming up the road--"
"We'll be in position in forty seconds. How close are they?"
"You should be able to see them as you crest the ridge. Me and Dimi have already had to reposition--"
"Forty seconds. Then take the shot on the officer, then on the technical."
"You don't expect much, huh?"

They were, indeed, over the ridge, albeit at the very distance of effective range. Ansehelm hoped... well, he hoped for a lot of things.
It was a beautiful day.
The report of Kendall's rifle cracked, scattering the birds.
The man with the hat went down, his chest exploding. The men on the road looked instinctively back at the sound.
It was almost too easy.
The rest of the Snakebite section put down a withering hail of fire, one shot at a time. There had been times during the war in Sameba where their heavy, burst-fire rifles had been ill-suited to the close-quarters of urban warfare, but here they were in their element. Sidibeh's squad sprayed bullets in the approximate cardinal direction of the enemy.
"Fucking hell, Soley, tell them single shots only at this distance!" Ansehelm affixed a grenade to his launcher, with a quaint little poff as it sailed into the distance. "Didn't get them all those bullets so they could go hunting for fowl..."
The kiffers quickly found cover from the main force of fire, but with every report of Kendall's rifle, for the most part another man slumped over. Those closest to the ridge seemed uncertain whether to charge - and those who did were repulsed, it seemed, by Sidibeh's men - or retreat, some dithering in the open and getting cut down mercilessly.
They found the only cover there was, piling up behind a concrete barricade that in better times stopped cars from careening off into the creek after hitting one of the road's many potholes. For a time, there was a stalemate, exchanging bullets to little effect, before Tanzer made his move, cutting around the flanks.
It did not take long, from there, for the rest to surrender. It was only after the fact, talking to the closest thing the survivors had to an officer, that Ansehelm realised they only surrendered because of the sound of unfamiliar firearms. Not for any fear of the noble IBR-47, but for hope their bearers would show more mercy than the KRF ever had.

Thirlwell took a shot to the vest, and was grateful for it; a similar shot went straight through one of Camara's men, Ngom, the only man they lost, while Camara himself had taken a bullet to the leg. Staub had hared off in the middle of the firefight to help Sidibeh's Lance-Corporal live through a bullet to the guts, and in doing so probably did more for relations between the nations than any diplomat. Everyone else made it through, and the surviving kiffers looked pretty disheartened to see that even with their own reduced numbers they matched their captors in manpower. Nobody tried anything, though. On either side.
It was a small and rather sad engagement, in truth. But to see the way Soley's men celebrated really brought home the way the KRF needed this victory, in the face of reverse after reverse in the north and south alike.
The only question lingering at the back of Ansehelm's mind was: did Nyowani Kitara?

Utter Shock for Atheara, as Drawkland is Defeated 6-3!
Today must really be the day where everyone in Atheara is shocked for once. Well, on this peculiar moment, what is making everyone shocked? The answer: Atheara defeats Drawkland 6 - 3, in Drawkland. Seriously, this is just getting absolutely ridiculous. By far the second highest scoring match in Athearan history (That title still belongs to Atheara 4 - 7 Xanneria). Though in other news, we still drew bloody Blouman Empire with a score of 1 - 1. Atheara has an official 0 - 2 - 0 against the state that is Blouman. Though this is definitely better than 0 - 0 - 2 against Deniria last cycle. Anyway, what was the game like? It was absolutely terrific. The scenes, the feeling and vibe of the stadium, the emotions, everything was very much perfect in that game. Want to know more? You can have it, because i am about to show you what just happened in the game. On another note, we are solely focusing on the Drawkland game. Alexander Porovik scored Atheara's goal in the game against the Blouman Empire.

Now, explaining what happened in every little detail in a match with 9 goals is not something you do everyday. So, really i will just explain what in the absolute hells had happened. First goal came at the 7th minute for Drawkland, as Jaxon Madison had dribbled around Kanton Oliver - Gruschev and Alexei Murov, proceeded to bend a controlled shot past Mugel Krygorf to give Drawkland a 1 - 0 lead. But it wouldn't last long though, as in the 12th minute, Luis Frawning was tackled by Elias Keys in the penalty box, which gave Atheara a penalty. Luis proceeded to score a panenka penalty, 1 - 1 and it's equal. The scoreline was equal until the 19th minute, as Roger Apollo proceeded to score a simple tap in from a corner by Mike Rodney, it was now 2 - 1 in Drawkland's favour. The game would go to even more insanity, as on the 23rd minute, Luis Frawning proceeded to make a through ball for Toriff Hicosia Algeer from the middle of the field, and Toriff runs through the field to chip Septimus Xander to make the game 2 - 3 for Athearan favour. This scoreline would last a while until the 37th minute, where Evan Osterric Hugens had taken a freekick to cross into the box, with Luis Frawning heading the ball past into the net, as the game turned it's head as the score was 2 - 4 in favour for Atheara.

As the first half ended, no one was believing this. How in the world did Atheara have a 2 - 4 lead against Drawkland, let alone in Drawkland? At this point, a few fans even left the stadium just because of the fact that Atheara was winning. Everyone was literally asking "Where did the defensive Atheara we all know and love go?" But, everyone thought it was a welcome surprise to the fact that Atheara is in fact, playing very agressive and asserting midfield dominance. It spoils any preparation the Drawkland team had made and even prepared to counter Atheara's defensive and counter-attacking style of football many have read well.

Welcome to Sporting Game Talk! It's your new host, Mateas Bikeford. Here, i talk about games related to sports that are related to what sports tournament Atheara is currently playing in! With the new edition of FIFA (FIFA, standing for ‘Football, It’s Flippin’ Awesome’) arriving in shops, many Athearans wondered if the Athearan National Team was added, of course they are. The Evil Assholes had put up some, uh, interesting ratings for Athearan players, and here they are. Also, we will be starting from forwards to goalkeeper.

What do you think of the ratings EA gave the first Athearan NT? Do you think the ratings fairly represent what and how the Athearan players are? Do you feel like one is over/underrated? Or do you feel like someone is robbed by their rating? Comment below.

The second half had started with a bang. On the 46th minute, Roger Apollo had dribbled the ball up the field, proceeded to shoot the ball outside the box, and beat Mugel Krygorf to give Drawkland a goal back to turn the game 3 - 4. This possible comeback for Drawk however, was not and never would be happening. On the 66th minute, Zimmerman Brusteric was tackled just outside the box by Nicholas Kingston, which was a yellow card. Zimmerman himself decided to take the freekick, as he swerves the ball past Septimus Xander to make the game turn to a 3 - 5 goal fest. You would think this is the end, but no! On the 87th minute, Craig Bakker had tackled Urusov Cantonian - Myords in the box, which gave Atheara another penalty. Who was taking it? Mugel Krygorf himself, as he had run down the pitch just to say that he wanted to take it. Everyone was fine with it. Mugel proceeded to run up, jump, and strike the ball to the right, which gave Atheara their 6th goal of the match. The final result was 3 - 6, giving Atheara an edge over Drawkland in the table standings.

So, what can i say about this? Well, i am happy! But, there is still Valladares. To secure that sweet 2nd spot, Atheara has to beat Valladares, no matter what the other results are. This way, Atheara can not only say they entered with a bang, but they can also say that they didn't have to worry about anything. Sure, we might lose and not qualify, but that just means we must do better next time.

Oneshot: Beach Volleychair

8:36pm (local time) - Saturday 14th September 1996

Trevor Wall was about as hard as his name suggested... except when it wasn't. He liked telling his mates that he preferred to keep his physical strength for construction projects. But when you're one of almost a hundred thousand nondescript faces at the Petro Mohammed, you've been sat down for something like half an hour (more if you include the travel time), throwing about a bunch of barely incomprehensible chants about the BLACK AND WHITE ARMY!*, thoroughly bored with anything that's been happening on the field, and can't be bothered to wait until half-time for a bit of action, then what the hell do you do?

Get up and try and dislodge your seat from its railing, of course. He tried for a bit before asking for help. His mate - for the time being - decided to give him a helping hand, and off the chair went after a lot of tugging. He picked up what was a firmly-secured seat in his hands and thought about what to do with it, but not for long.

Right there, a few steps and a few dozen or hundred metres ahead of him, were a ton of people in vaguely red shirts who would no doubt be utterly infuriated. Perfection. With that, Wall shouted "BLACK AND WHITE ARMY!" for the last time and flung his unusual missile right down into the tier below him, into a sizable crowd of Qurijans, hoping that it would be useful as a weapon of war.

Why not? It's not like Juven and Tinhamptonians don't have history between them.

Why? He looked down for a few seconds and just about managed to see that the Qurijan fans were throwing the dodgy plastic chair among them, as if they had nothing better to do and just wanted to create a party atmosphere of some description. He had every reason to be disappointed. Of course he would: he missed the second half - and all three goals, for that matter - after being carted off by the security guards right before half-time. On the other hand, he was one of the first travelling supporters back at the airport. Nice work, Trev.

∴

The morning of Tuesday 17th September 1996

Wall woke up a few days later to find a letter which had a golden eagle and his address on it, which he was entirely convinced had something to do with what he did to the seat he chucked way down the other day. He tried to confirm his suspicions to no avail. 2,190 units of something... he certainly owed that much to somebody, but couldn't understand anything more than that.

And so into the big cardboard box of unread letters it went. "It's not like I need to understand that weird right-aligned font," he muttered to himself. He probably should have tried.

∴

It took Wall until Friday the 20th to get a letter from the Saint Eleanor FA. This time, he could actually understand what it said, even if it didn't contain any helpful numbers. He decided to read it closely this time...

NOTICE OF PUBLIC SAFETY ORDER

Imposed upon Trevor Christopher Wall, 29 Queens Street, New Lizard, Saint Eleanor City
Requested by Saint Eleanor Football Association, 42 Capital Street, Central, Saint Eleanor City

You have received this letter to remind you that, as of 19th September 1996, a Public Safety Order has been imposed upon you pursuant to the Public Safety Decree 1975.

This Public Safety Order expires on 19th June 1997. These are the conditions of your Order:
  • You must not enter, or come within one hundred feet of, any stadium ordinarily used to host professional football matches in any country in the world.
  • You must not acquire, or attempt to acquire, tickets to attend any professional football match organised anywhere in the world.

You have received this order due to your vandalism of the Petro Mohammed Stadium, Al Qurija, Al Qurija, while attending a professional football match as an invited guest of the Saint Eleanor Football Association, and your failure to compensate the host football association for costs incurred as a result.

The Saint Eleanor Football Association believes that your aforementioned actions breached the Football Supporters Decree 1982 and the Civil Claims Decree 1977. This has been confirmed by a panel of justices of the Eastern Municipal Justice Court.

You may appeal this Public Safety Order. More information on the appeals process can be obtained at your district's National Liberation Front Club.

The following day was Saint Eleanor's final game, at home against Saterun. He wasn't planning on attending, anyway; he'd figured that the government wouldn't want to pay any of his bills off.

(*: Saint Eleanor were actually wearing their blue-and-yellow away kit that day.)
****** The Grand Republic of Saint Eleanor - area 2,863mi2, population 489,816, 1.6 cups of coffee/Eleanorian/day - it's 2000 (OOC: obvious Tinhampton puppet)
BoF76 quarterfinalists --- WC91 participants

Why? George Mitcham, General then and now, cofounded the National Liberation Front in 1971 to demand a free Saint Eleanor. He got his wish in '75 after a 15-month war: becoming President, appointing notable NLF friends and some charity's executive director as VPs and calling them legislators. He has retained power through oil money; zero income tax; free healthcare, schooling, public transport - and markets; tolerating dissent on apolitical matters; allowing private gun ownership (with plenty of training) to protect against future invasions; high-quality PR; and football.

In a true romantic comedy, everything always lines up perfectly.

But this wasn’t a true romantic comedy. This was a romantic comedy/military espionage thriller/slasher horror, and there were many little moments that spoiled the poetry of the occasion. It would have been fitting had Jason Þórhallursson, the man who’d scored the country’s first ever international goal and whose hat-trick had secured them the Baptism of Fire, scored the winning goal – or scored at all. Instead, when given a chance in front, he instead played an unselfish flick header on for Eiríka Jonathansdóttir. He was replaced by Kalle Bjørnsson, a wonderful nod to the only two men who’d played in the BoF final and were still in the squad – except for Fabian Snæþórsson, who’d also been in that squad, spent this game much as he had that tournament entirely on the bench, and had to endure lots of awkward nods and pats. And the match itself didn’t yield to the demands of historical drama: knowing three points would probably guarantee World Cup qualification, the Snow Wolves didn’t wait for the dramatic 90th minute winner, and instead went 2 up before the half – the thrilling late goal came from their opponents, Acastanha. Then again, maybe that 3 – 1 scoreline was fitting, after the BoF and CoH finals had both finished the same.

Yet as the final whistle went, those little moments seemed to count for very little, as a far bigger truth registered on the electronic scoreboards around the Grander International Arena in Steinaux:

GRÆNTFJALL HAVE QUALIFIED FOR THE WORLD CUP!

Results from around the world were pouring in, but one thing was clear: with 43 points, there was no way Græntfjall couldn’t now not receive an automatic qualifying spot, even if they slipped to 2nd in the group. [OOC: author’s note – if this isn’t true and I somehow miss the WC then Petter Erlingsson isn’t going to be the only one writing on the walls in his own shit] If the moment lacked the majesty of a decisive cup final victory, then the fans in the stand hollering and cheering didn’t seem to mind. Blue-and-white ticker tape, pre-ordered by KG in a covert act of potentially massive hubris, exploded in the skies as the nonplussed Acastanha players trooped off; the Snow Wolves remained on the field, celebrating with the fans, who were hurling boiled sweets and stuffed wolf toys and anything they could lay their hands on, and with each other.

Tom Ernestisson and Elektra Lúthersdóttir embraced. They had become in this match the first married couple to represent Græntfjall in the same game. They were both young and fit; there could be many more such occasions. The way they were looking at each, perhaps there would be a whole generation of Ernestisson-Lúthersdóttirs to follow. Tom turned and accepted a hug from his brother, goalkeeper Björnólfur, who after years of stops and starts had finally cemented his place as the #1 in this qualification. More siblings were celebrating as Lilly and Julia Wolfgangsdóttir were chosen to be lofted onto the shoulders of Reidar Rögnvaldursson (whose own brother, Lyngar, was not in the squad, but could be seen cheering from the VIP box crowded with former Snow Wolves greats) and Tinni Grímólfursson, while Valtter Marvinsson and Vanessa Marvinsdóttir were so giddy with excitement that they were running around chasing each other like puppies.

Some celebrations were more stoical. Injured captain Hjörleifur Reynarsson, in a suit rather than a match shirt, nodded knowingly from the sidelines. “That’ll do, pig, that’ll do,” he murmured. “The fuck did you just call me!?” shrieked Anna-Liisa, his new wife. An exhausted Emeli Vilbertsdóttir had just sat down in the center circle, hugging her knees to her chest as she surveyed the festivities in the stands with a weary smile. Car horns blasted as Steinaux, Háttmark, Græntfjall began to celebrate; the odd crack of rifle fire and the more conventional screech of fireworks joined the cacophony. Young players Sara Kristoffersdóttir and Michelle Matteosdóttir had their phones out, recording the moment for posterity. Old veterans Justiina Dannysdóttir and Álfar Ásvaldursson were happy to let their eyeballs doing the recording: they’d never forget this night.

No one would forget this night, in fact.

In the stands, there were children and young people who’d grown up with this team. There were adults, who remembered the days when Græntfjall couldn’t even gain admission to World Cup qualifying. There were gray heads the days of communism and darkness, and watching a new hope now dawn. People jumping, dancing. Feet pounding the floor. The game was being played at the GIA: in the early days of the national team, this would have been at the GNA in Gunzlach, across town. A 50,000 capacity stadium. But Steinaux had wanted to outdo their arch-rivals, and built a 50,001 capacity stadium. There weren’t a hundred thousand feet jumping up and down tonight: there were one hundred thousand two. And that, as it turned out, made all the difference. The vibrations were strong enough to be picked up at seismic monitoring stations. Imperceptible ripples spread out across the White Sea. And beneath the waves, sealife darted to safety as pebbles and sand shifted on the seabed. One hundred thousand feet might not have been enough, but that one hundred thousand and first foot smashing into the ground in jubilation was just to enough to dislodge a rock that caused a flurry, a rockslide beneath the sea.

For beneath the seabed itself – disturbed by the noise and commotion – something was waking from its ancient slumber.

“Sssssssssssskkkkkkkkkkkkrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”

In the center of the field, Amanda Guttisdóttir was standing well clear as Jason Þórhallursson and Kalle Bjørnsson celebrated with a handshake that would have made Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers look limp-wristed. Igrene Cantor came up alongside the midfielder and offered a nod of congratulation. It was obviously a strange moment for the manager, hailing from a country where World Cup qualification wasn’t something to be celebrated so much as taken for granted. But Igrene had played her part in all this – just as had Kang Guillin, before her – and deserved to be down on the field accepting the applause – and the 100,002 footbeats – of the fans, just as much as these players.

It was also strange for Igrene because right now, the Nepharan name was (even more) dirt on the streets of Græntfjall. Since news of a physical Nepharan presence joining the fray in Nyowani Kitara on the side of the KRF, the public mood had darkened even more. Right-wing politicians openly advocated invasion and “not stopping until we take Port Viljan”; the phrase “Greater Græntfjall” was no longer the domain of fringe kooks. Even the moderates were advocating bombing, no-fly zones, a presence on Lake Viljan. Still, Zóphonías Juliusson remained aloof, frozen by inaction, hoping that some peaceful solution would simply arrive so he could begin writing his speech. Yes, the Nepharans were not popular right now. Except for one, to whom statues were already being planned.

“Congratulations, Ms Cantor.”

The voice had the clipped, tight accent of Háttmark high society. They’d known there were celebrities and VIPs in attendance – that Princess Jessika herself was here, though, no one had told the team. She was dressed down, in black jacket and jeans, and had been let onto the field to congratulate the team. Amanda curtseyed obsequiously; Igrene studiously did not. Given the Nepharan attitude to royalty, Amanda wondered whether it was wise the Princess hadn’t brought her bodyguard with her.

“Jess!”

The Princess was swept up in a crushing snowbear-hug by Jason. Amanda and Igrene exchanged eyebrow waggles, communicating in a semaphore of creased brows and furrowed foreheads: “He didn’t, did he?”

“I mean, uh, your Highness.”

Jessika smiled at him.

“…he did.”

“J, um, Mr. Þórhallursson, was it? Congratulations.”

“That’s it, I’m getting him spayed.”

“And Mr. Bjørnsson, congratulations.”

Kalle turned pink, looking like an enormous pile of marshmallows, and mumbled his thanks as he bowed, curtseyed, and cringed in one less-than-fluid gesture.

“Oh, look, it’s Petter, come to join in the festivities!”

They turned to look. Petter Erlingsson, as club captain of the Steinaux team and former NT player, had of course been granted VIP access. He was now using said access to come down onto the field, slip past the guards holding back the crowd, and was charging towards the gaggle at the center of the field. He was screaming. Something silvery-metallic flashed in his hand.

“He seems excited!”

“I think he brought a present.”

“Aww, that’s so sweet of him!”

“I AM GOING TO FUCKING MURDER YOU!!!”

But his cry was lost beneath those of the crowd. The car honking, too, outside the stadium had grown louder, though few inside were yet realizing that this was no longer congratulatory parps – but signs of panic and mayhem. Off the coast, in the Steinaux harbor, an enormous mælstrom had formed. Sailors and longshoremen were crying out as huge freight ships and enormous tankers were tossed like they were made of paper. Sulfrous vapors were rising from the boiling seas and the roiling skies darkening. Lightning cracked and boomed. From the waves, the first tentacle emerged: scaled and scarred, aged beyond the centuries, thicker than the trunk of the mightiest tree. It lashed the waters in anger. A head emerged, a monstrous grotesque, a terrifying vision that sent mad all who dared look upon it. A foul maw opened, vomiting up a bile flood as it unleashed its hell-scrying bellow:

“Sssssssssssskkkkkkkkkkkkrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”

“It’s Hrærekur!”

Hrærekur Jvarsson, the former NT captain, once the most capped player in Snow Wolves history, MVP of the Baptism of Fire 73 campaign, was indeed on the field, running towards them, shouting. Petter was a few paces ahead of him, and the big man wasn’t gaining on him.

“I’m really glad he could be here tonight,” said Amanda, who had played alongside Hrærekur for so many games. “No offense,” she added, turning to Jason, who’d finally torn his eyes from Princess Jessika, “But…”

“He’ll always be our captain,” smiled back the center forward.

“Look how excited they both are, screaming and waving their arms around like little boys!”

Everyone laughed at how adorable it was, and kept laughing for several moments, until certain less adorable details came into focus.

“What was that he said about ‘disembowelling’?”

“Do excited little boys usually wave butchers’ knives around?”

“Is… is that his wife’s housecoat?”

“Ex-wife,” corrected Jason.

“AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!”

Jason, bravely but unwisely, stepped forward, pulling Princess Jessika behind her. Gallantry wasn’t a gendered thing: Amanda found herself being wrapped up in Igrene’s arms as the Nepharan manager moved to protect her, too.

Petter, wielding his knife, was charging straight at Jason. He aimed the blade and swung back his arm. His face was a mask of insane fury, of years of humiliation and envy and hatred, of a good, conscientious Christian man snapping under the weight of stress and shame and sheer plot convenience necessary because this story is called Four Weddings and a Funeral – and we’re nearly out of weddings.

And then, the moment fell to one man among them whose career, whose life, had been dedicated to identifying a threat and moving in to neutralize it.

Kalle Bjørnsson.

With a bellow, the enormous defensive midfielder dived at Jason, his oldest friend, and Princess Jessika, beloved royalty, and pushed them out of the way, just as Petter lunged home with the knife.

“Noooooooo!”

“Aaaaaaaaaaaah!”

“KALLE STRONKKKK!”

“Sssssssssssskkkkkkkkkkkkrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”

The sound sucked the air from the stadium. A hundred thousand – and two – silent eyes turned to look up as the humongous figure of Gargalak’xog’gurzuun, Putrid Grievepest of the Dread Realm, Arch-Krakeness the Mighty, rose above the Grander International Arena, blotting out the stars in the sky. A dozen or more giant tentacles thrashed. Seawater and silt sprayed. The sky itself rejected this eldritch monstrosity as the clouds burst and blood began to pour down. If Græntfjallers had an annoying tendency to call their blue, white and red kit the ‘blue-and-white’, right now even they couldn’t deny the red was predominant. That awful hellmouth opened once and bellowed.

“Sssssssssssskkkkkkkkkkkkrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”

And Gargalak’xog’gurzuun lashed out. Mad with fury and fear at its nightmarish dreams had been disturbed, her tentacles lashed out. They struck for the first thing she recognized as a threat. The first thing she decided to devour. The first thing she would drag back to her watery grave-chamber of dreadsleep. And that thing – was a man with a knife.

“Aaaaaaaaaaaeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu”

Petter’s screams were lost to the night as he was grabbed up in the death embrace of twin tentacles and hoisted into the air so fast that people would later hope his neck had snapped instantly, before those two tentacles rent him apart, before they deposited their catch into the steaming maw of the undying nightmarespawn. Having feasted, having put to silence the pounding feet, the kraken withdrew, plunging back into the river and racing back into the bay, diving beneath the waves once more to slumber for another æon.

Nothing broke the awed silence for two, three minutes. Princess Jessika was shivering in Jason’s arms. Amanda and Igrene had their heads buried in each other’s necks, unable to look. Hrærekur had finally caught up, only to fall to his knees. On the ground, a slumped figure lay, a knife protruding from his chest.

“Kalle stronk…” he croaked, as his eyelids fluttered shut.

Latest Caps and Goals

The 89th World Cup Qualification match between Lathamford against Agresos took place at the lucky stadium, Thousandforks National Arena, a total of 24,112 spectators watched the match, which was sponsored by Lathamford's largest renewable energy company, Sprowston Energy. Head coach Pedro Menendez-Sutra d’Ame still retains almost all of the players who played in previous matches. Terry Glowsnarl is still entrusted with guarding the national team’s goal gate while assisted by Haymoore, captain, Skelmersdale and, Decker in a defensive position, in midfield, Pedro Menendez put Wymondham, Wyvernchaser, Hargreave, and Colfield. The offensive line is still led by Kingsley and assisted by Clawbrand and the country's dangerous inverted wing, Otto Farrowsteam. The national team did not wait long to lead the opponents 1-0 with a beautiful goal scored by Morten Clawbrand in the 23rd minute. The goal resulted when the opposing defender made a mistake by pushing the ball back but did not reach the goalkeeper and was quickly stolen by Clawbrand and made a powerful shot to beat the opposing goalkeeper. Ten minutes later, a shot from Giles Kingsley only managed to graze the wrong side of the post, otherwise, a second goal would have resulted. The full result, the Speedy Cat beat Agresos 1-0. In the 17th match, Lathamford visited Melbergia's home. Once again head coach Pedro Menendez-Sutra d’Ame put up the same starting line-up when they beat Agresos yesterday. The attacking combination of Clawbrand, Kingsley, and Farrowsteam is still his belief in this match. Playing in front of the opposing spectators put some pressure on Pedro Menendez's men, where before they could settle down they were put under great pressure by the opposing team, as a result, the opposing player in jersey number 9 managed to score as a result of the chaotic situation in front of Lathamford goal in the eighth minute. Lathamford almost scored the equalizer, Colfield's low free-kick from 20 yards was comfortably saved by the keeper. Two minutes before the end of the second half, Lathamford once again almost equalized, the shot from Farrowsteam went just wide of goal, if the ball was right towards the already open goal gate, surely they would have entered the dressing room with a 1-1 situation. Capitalizing on the weakness of the defense, Morten Clawbrand scored with a powerful and well-placed shot on the other side of the net to the keeper, this happened in the 58th minute of the match, at least, little pressure they had been able to avoid. We almost found the winning goal, a carefully placed free-kick from halfway ended up with Joe Wymondham in a prime position to score one but the goalkeeper managed to punch it away, giving away a corner. After that no more effective attacks could be produced as the opposing team had started doing ultra-defensive tactics in their defensive area, the match ended with a 1-1 result.

Flagged Down!
excerpt from http://www.swensports.swe

ABAHNFLEFT - It was a weird game for sure and one that will live int he collective tastebuds of the SWEN fans, especially for those who are diehards. The scene got ugly quick and Fleft players should have looked worse than they did. It all started coming out of the tunnel. SWEN player Alfonso Rogilio came out of the tunnel with a SWEN flag. Unkown words were exchanged between Rogillio and back up Fleftic goalkeeper Carlos Cohen. Next thing people know the anthems were playing and there was a literal rugby scrum as the players were duking it out on the field. Chaos ensued as a massive team vs team fight happened. after it was all over several players had been carded and all were members of the Pioneers squad. 6 players redcarded including four starters (Elder, Gear, Bruce, Klattenberg) and many more were yellow carded, the lack of defense shutter any chance the Pioneers had to gain traction on Zwanzug and Banija as Fleft trounced the now short handed team 3-1. The referees stated later only SWEN players got carded due tot he fact that it seemed they had been the aggressor. This infuriated coach Rox and he went off on them in the presser post game. He made several claims that he was knocked over in the scrum with an elbow. Although so far video evidence can't find this and it sppears that a trainer on his own staff may have knocked him over, although coach Rox insists it was a Fleftic player.

As for the game it was a very Fleftic affair. Marcus Tabarez had two quick goals and the team settled into a rhythm that saw the Flefts control the ball for nearly an hour of game time. Tabarez got by the defense on a breakaway score, while his second showed up to high for 5'10" Trevor Ducksby to reach. Ducksby did well for someone rushed intot he line up and though a sketchy PK was awarded to the FLeftic team, Trev the Duck held serve and minimized the damage. Next up is a pair of key games with Banija looming and a large chunk of the roster missing it will be fascinating to see how that game turns out.

Before the final match of World Cup 88 qualifying the Sarzonian national football team decided to fire manager Nicola Mentes with the team struggling to score goals and prevent them and the team on its way to a dismal four-victory campaign.

The Incorporated Football Federation decided it wasn't necessarily the new system Sarzonia was running under Mentes that needed change, because their next move was to turn to his assistant Nathan Hanifer, a man who used a similar philosophy with the Under 21 national team. It was the voice at the top that IFF chairman Zack Wilson felt needed to change.

"We just felt as though the team were tuning out Mentes," Wilson said. "And perhaps we didn't do a good enough job of adapting to the way he wanted to do things."

Wilson said publicly he was going to take the long view with Sarzonian football, realising that getting back to consistently contending for a place in the World Cup proper was going to take time. Privately, however, he confided to a reporter that he wanted to see "signs of life" in the team, both in terms of improved results and in improvement in play overall. He admitted that losing midfielder Brady Reynolds and reserve forward Mek'hi West to retirement would "really hurt" the team's opportunities to get results in the short term.

"Brady in particular was the heart and soul of the Stars," he said. "I'd have assigned him the [captain's] armband if I were manager." When told former manager Kevin Connelly and both Mentes and Hanifer offered the armband, but he declined, Wilson said he would have had a conversation with him to understand why. But he also admitted that some players simply don't want the added responsibility of being an official "leader."

However, Wilson also made a very interesting point about leadership.

"It's not always the title," he said. "You can be a leader and not wear the armband." Reynolds, he said, certainly fit that maxim.

"He stepped in and really helped my son take the reins of the team," he said of Reynolds and his support of midfielder Clayton Wilson, Zack Wilson's son, and the current inheritor of the Wilson bloodlines. In fact, Reynolds quelled a potential revolt among players who felt Clayton Wilson was too young, too inexperienced, to wear the armband. Plus, there was the added requirement to navigate defender Russ Howard being stripped of the captaincy.

"Brady was absolutely masterful," Zack Wilson said. "Short of actually taking the armband himself, he really made it a point to throw his full support behind Clayton and I'm proud of him for doing that."

The Stars played an entertaining 4-4 draw against the world's top ranked side in The Holy Empire before a 5-3 victory in the away finale against Acastanha. The Stars will close out the schedule at Dave WIlson Stadium in Woodstock against Græntfjall, who have already clinched a place among the teams either directly in the proper or in a two-leg playoff for the right to advance to World Cup 89. Hanifer said the Stars would play their first choice side against Græntfjall.

"We may not be in this, but we can have a say as to which team will earn the automatic qualifying position and which team will play in the playoff," he said. "Plus, we've already earned a winning record in this qualifying campaign, so that gives us something else to build on as we look forward to the World Cup 90 cycle."

Sarzonia improved their record to 8-3-6 with the victory over Acastanha, meaning that even a defeat to Græntfjall would not prevent Sarzonia from finishing with more wins than losses. It's a point of pride for the Stars, even if pride is all they'll have to play for against their fellow Baptism of Fire Cup champions.

"We needed to show signs of life," Hanifer said, referring to the comment from Zack Wilson. "I believe we've done just that."

The Path to Destiny

HUElavia earns big break to stay alive in Qualification aspirations!

Brenecia 4-2 HUElavia
(White 3', 52', Caitiff 38', Leadbetter 79' | Sol 7', Fonseca-Mantovani 47')
(Kingsgarden, Rozelle, Brenecia)

HUElavia 2-0 Garifunya
(Sol 38', 62')
(Estadio Pereira, Fronde, HUElavia)

Throughout these Qualifiers, HUElavia has had a struggle with their matches, but have found the way to keep themselves alive and in the hunt for a place in World Cup 89. These last two matches brought out misery and joy, suspense and celebration for the players and fans alike. The first game was a highly anticipated matchup between Brenecia vs HUElavia, where despite efforts from Sol and Fonseca-Mantovani, a brace from White and goals by Caitiff and Leadbetter got the best of Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos in a disappointing 4-2 defeat at Rozelle, marking the 2nd loss of the team in the qualifiers. It seemed that all was lost for the team when they began to get results from the other matches. Kohnhead was held to a surprising 0-0 draw with Le Choix, while Squidroidia was upset at Moliza with a 1-0 defeat. Thus, Brenecia took 1st Place, while Squidroidia was sent to 2nd Place, all while HUElavia maintained in 3rd Place and Kohnhead was stuck in 4th place.

Matchday 17 was one that was crucial for all four teams, notably with Squidroidia and Kohnhead facing off against each other. HUElavia played their final home game of the Group Qualifiers at Fronde, where Sol hit the right stride and form, scoring an opening goal in 38th minute where he got the ball from Fonseca-Mantovani and curving it past the reach of Kruit into the top corner of the goal to make it 1-0. Sol was mobbed by his teammates and the bench while the crowd erupted in cheers and jumping around, making the stadium rumble. In the 62nd minute, a foul by den Dekker over Girault (in for Nascimento) allowed Sol to take the free kick over the wall and past the fingertips of Kruit into the goal, making it 2-0 and the crowd erupting once more while Sol was mobbed by the team and bench for the goal. As the match ended, there was a cheer from the crowd for the win, but even more so with the results coming in around the group. The team was happy and motivated to hear that Squidroidia and Kohnhead ended their match at a 2-2 draw, meaning HUElavia took up 2nd Place in Group 2. Brenecia in the meanwhile won their match at Txakhaxi 1-2 to win Group 2 and Qualify directly to World Cup 89.

Thus, Matchday 18 is a winner-take-all scenario for all three teams of HUElavia, Squidroidia, and Kohnhead. HUElavia travels to Le Choix, Squidroidia hosts Geisenfried, and Kohnhead travels to Moliza. Winner will be advancing to the Playoffs for World Cup 89. HUElavia is in the Playoffs with a Win or Draw OR Loss AND Squidroidia & Kohnhead not winning their games. The Away Uniform will be worn for the final match, with the A-Team playing, with Vannier in goal and Mendieta as the Captain. The match will be broadcasted on HBC once again, with the other two matches having their scores on the bottom right corner of the broadcast shown to keep the viewers aware of the scorelines, with an occasional table to pop up to show where the teams stand as the games progress. Thousands of HUElavians have traveled to Le Choix, looking to cheer on the team in what cam be a momentous occasion. For Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos, they are in control of their own destiny, and despite a rocky start to the Qualifiers, they look to prove theyve learned and grown from their mistakes. Here's to possibly advancing to a further round and a memorable match.

FORÇA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

The locker room was eerily silent. It was Matchday 16 of the World Cup Qualifiers, and Squidroidia still couldn't understand the tricky defensive unit of Moliza. Heading into the game they were on top of the group, capitalizing upon an upset by unranked Geisenfried over Brenecia and were seemingly 3 games away from making their first ever World Cup. Game 1 of 3... Moliza won at their home field, sentencing Squidroidia to fighting for their lives for 2nd place against Kohnhead and their archrivals HUElavia. The manager, an experienced Barunian who has guided his team to World Cup qualification in cycles past, Mr. Adam Johnson, was pissed at the Inklings.

He walked into the locker room looking fed up. This was supposed to be an easy win for Squidroidia heading into a crucial fixture against Kohnhead. Instead the Molizians made that Matchday 17 clash at the Chicken King Stadium a do-or-die one. Their only saving grace was that the Brains drew against Le Choix, but Johnson didn't want a saving grace. He wanted to guide his team to the World Cup proper and prove to the Barunians that he still had it.

With a folding table surrounding the Squidroidian players, Johnson had his target.

"This is unbelievable... You guys are playing like it's some sort of friendly game up at Sharktail! Who were we playing Hideo?"

The 27 year old who just signed with V-League Declasse Division outfit Makosile United responded with "Moliza in World Cup qualifying."

"Yeah you're damn right, MOLIZA!" Johnson flipped the table over in sheer anger over the result he saw. "IN WORLD CUP QUALIFYING!" The Barunian was met by stares from his players, blankly at their manager. Adam just stares back at them, and then focuses his attention on starting goalkeeper Takemoto Shingen, who had his gloves off.

"...The fuck is wrong with you? Put your gloves on. I said put your gloves on!"

"Nyowani Kitara's having a crisis right no-"

"Yeah yeah I know, it's all over the news. You know what, put your gloves back on, we don't have time for newsbriefs."

"But Johnson! Nobody's talking about it!" cried Hideo.

Johnson fired back. "Worry about your own news. Plenty to keep you busy." Then he went back to Shingen. "Prince Akongo taking Dewayo is a hell of a way from Takanori being assassinated, nerd."

Shingen got mad at what the manager said to him and stormed up to the Barunian. "You want me to tell the news, huh? Is that what you want!?"

Adam let the cannon fire. "I WANT YOU TO BE A FOOTBALL GOALKEEPER!"

"I AM A FOOTBALL GOALKEEPER! YOU WANT ME TO SAVE A SHOT WHILE READING AN ARTICLE? HUH!?" Takemoto's cries were pushed aside by the other players on the Squidroidian national team while Johnson left the locker room.

"That will keep 'em going."

Theme music

"A sense of nervousness fills the air in Inkopolis tonight for the final day of World Cup qualifying. It was only 2 games ago that Squidroidia suffered a humiliating defeat against first time entrants Moliza to buoy their chances of making the World Cup proper for the first time ever, and just last matchday they drew with a Kohnhead side still in the fight for that 2nd spot! With Brenecia already qualified, it is a 3 horse race for the 2nd place spot, and Squidroidia has to look over their shoulder to confirm if they really have a battle at the playoff table! But the Inklings can't take their foot off the gas now - Matchday 18. Geisenfried. Under the lights.

"Hello and welcome to perhaps the biggest game in World Cup qualifying for the Squidroidian national team, my name is Takanaki Osa. After Matchday 14, the 2-0 away win against Garifunya, the SFA announced that the final game of World Cup qualifying for Squidroidia would be indeed happening under the lights of Inkopolis City Stadium. After that announcement, the Squidroidians were inconsistent, capitalizing on Brenecia's shock loss to the very same Geisenfried the Inklings will play tonight with a 1-0 win against Le Choix to put them on top of the group. Then disaster struck - A 1-0 loss to Moliza away from home put Adam Johnson and his Squidroidia team all but out of reach for topping Group 2, and the draw with Kohnhead in Kohnhead City has confirmed what Squidroidian fans feared would happen. Brenecia has indeed qualified for the World Cup once more, and Squidroidia, once top of the class, are now stuck in 3rd, praying for not only a win tonight, but for Le Choix to play spoiler and get a result against HUElavia to wrap up 2nd place for the Inklings! For more, we turn to Rose Golden, who is live at the Sang des Martyrs tonight. Rose, how's the atmosphere for this game?"

"In the HUElavian camp, they know they're in control of their own destiny, Osa. As the 2nd place standings currently stand, they are slated to play a formidable Siovanija and Teusland side, but even then it might all change at the flick of a finger with Poafmersia on their heel! As far as they are concerned, they will worry about the playoff when they do make it, but right now it's all about Le Choix. As many of you know, HUElavia are 2 points ahead against Squidroidia, and all they need to do to finish 2nd is to win tonight, or hope that if they draw or lose, Squidroidia don't win against Geisenfried, as the Inklings have the superior goal differential. And Conavacio is confident they will get it done - Cast your mind back to Matchday 9 at Lourdes, and they did beat Les Élus at their home turf off the back of Mathieu Guilbert and Pierrette Girault. Le Choix however is difficult to beat for teams on the road, as they are 4-2-2 at the Sang des Martyrs, with Garifunya, Geisenfried and 2 teams still in the hunt for 2nd, Squidroidia and Kohnhead, able to get points against them! Hell, you might remember their 1-0 win against Brenecia in Matchday 3! Le Choix may not be an easy team to beat for these HUElavians. Back to you, Takanaki."

"Thanks Rose. We'll be keeping an eye on that game throughout the night, but I want to get back to Geisenfried right now. Back to Matchday 9 of qualifying we go, away from Inkopolis and into the heart of the Golden Eagles, the Heimüller Küstenkolosseum, and there you have the man of that hour, Sho Itō with a brilliant strike in the 27th minute for the only goal of the game, securing 3 for the Inklings. But this is an away tie for the Golden Eagles and on the road, with a 3-2-3 record, they are inconsistent, and trajectory may point to a draw for this team, which is what Squidroidia DON'T want. Again, a win against them and Le Choix getting a result against HUElavia means that the Inklings can get to the World Cup. Kohnhead is also technically in the hunt as well, 4th in the table, but they are 3 points back of HUElavia, meaning they have to hope that BOTH Squidroidia and HUElavia lose and that the Brains themselves beat Moliza to qualify, as they have the superior goal difference out of the 3. Moliza, well, is Moliza however. We'll also be keeping an eye on that game as well.

"And we are almost there to the final game of World Cup qualifying, 90 minutes away from finding out the next step for Johnson and the Inklings! We'll be right back."

"I hereby call this meeting of the GOOFI committee to order. Present are Honorary Secretary Dagon, Chair Cthulhu, Vice-Chair Azathoth, and Membership Secretary Nyarlathotep."

"Thank you, Secretary Dagon."

"Don't mention it, Chair Cthulhu."

"So, Membership Secretary Nyarlathotep, can you give us an update on this campaign's GOOFI recruitment drive?"

"Yes I can, Chair Cthulhu."

"And?"

"There has been precisely one."

"One?"

"Yes, I believe I can can count to one, Chair Cthulhu; when I said one, I meant one. That is, one more than none, and one less than two."

"And who was this applicant, Membership Secretary Nyarlathotep?"

"The FAC of the Commonwealth of Baker Park. They particularly welcomed the opportunity to engage in erudite yet kindly debate on the leading issues of the day."

"I mean, that's super and lovely and everything, really it is. But just one? Out of every nation participating in the World Cup; just the one?"

"Well other than Vilita and Audioslavia, who joined GOOFI in World Cup 88, you'll remember your cyclopean greatness, oh Chair Cthulhu."

"Burble burble. Burble"

"I quite agree, Vice-Chair Azathoth; this is most disappointing. We invited every World Cup 89 participant for tea and crumpets to build links of cuddle-based friendship between ordinary mortals, Great Old Ones, and Elder Gods; and all we get are Baker Park?"

"Baker Park is a fine nation, Chair Cthulhu."

"Oh yes, Honorary Secretary Dagon; I didn't mean to suggest otherwise. Lovely people. Fine nation. Excellent commitment to gender equality in the national side. All good stuff. Can't wait to share a cuddle with them over tea and crumpets. I was just hoping for, well, a few other GOOFI members. What reason did other nations give for turning us down, Membership Secretary Nyarlathotep?"

"Well, the overwhelming majority of nations simply ignored us."

"What?"

"Sorry, Chair Cthulhu. But of the nations that did reply, Milchama were ardent monotheists who were worried about semitic bowel movements. The Squornshelan Remnant States had an 'aversion' to 'stupendously powerful and ancient entities who inspire legions of fanatically addled followers'. Sarzonia didn't bother with a formal application, but indicated that they had better things to do."

"Such a shame; the recent 4-4 draw was so much fun! They're lovely people in Sarzonia! I'd love to give them a cuddle!"

"Burble"

"I'm pleased you think so, Honorary Secretary Dagon, and Vice-Chair Azathoth; but it seems they don't entirely reciprocate. Do please continue, Membership Secretary Nyarlathotep."

"Of course, Chair Cthulhu. Elsewhere, St Trinians thought their matriarch might kill them, the Saltsteadish Confederation were happy to engage in civilised and erudite conversation but still retained concerns over that mad cultist miscommunication issue before our first match against them, and while Kelssek expressed some level of interest they never followed through. Oh, and while not an official application or rejection, Billiam Maskey, chief-editor-in-chief of that profoundly influential and highly regarded Ordinary Reality media organ The Turnip warned its readers not to accept tea and crumpets from "stupendously powerful and ancient entities who inspire legions of fanatically addled followers". The Turnip is so influential, is taken so seriously - even more so than the profoundly important The Beet - that I feel this must have had a decisive influence."

"So... it's primarily an issue of fear of mad cultists and the insidious influence of the mighty The Turnip."

"More or less, Chair Cthulhu."

"So.... speaking hypothetically... if we were to encourage our mad cultists to write letters of complaint to The Turnip..."

"I'm not sure it would recruit more nations to GOOFI, Chair Cthulhu, but it would certainly let Billiam Maskey know what we think."

"Then as it is written - so let it be done. Billiam Maskey shall know my wroth via the letter-writing campaign of thousands of cultists! At last we can put them to some use!"

National team manager Marcus Waters, in the first minute of stoppage time, on the touchline

This had been a fierce matchup here in Banija's final regularly scheduled home World Cup Qualifier, at Mavuto Field. The Kadongo Kamu, winners of 8 in a row to get to this point after a disastrous beginning to their World Cup Qualifying campaign, were doing all they could to hold on at their home field against the surprise best team of their group- Pemecutan. Ranked just 78th going into World Cup Qualifying, a team that had forged its teeth in the Melayu Archipelago was forging their way to World Cup success and excellence.

It helps when you have a pair of world-class strikers on your front line, namely Idai Uster and Kausu Dione. Idai Uster has won a pair of league titles playing for AFC Treason in the Nepharim Premiership, while Kausu Dione has become a world-class striker in Audioslavia. And the two combined for a pair of first half goals to put the national team up 2-0 in Hoima. This was good. The Banijans entered the day second in the table, 4 points and one spot behind Pemecutan in World Cup Qualifying. But with the team having just passed Zwangzug at the last double window, there was still plenty of reason to worry.

Considering how poorly Banija had started out, it had quickly become clear what was required of this national team- to go perfect across the final 10 games of the campaign. Go 10 wins out of 10. That nearly impossible thing they were striving for, of course, would be the only way the national team would be able to guarantee at least a berth in the World Cup Qualification Playoffs. When 22 year old Arya Tungga Wijaya scored a goal to bring Pemecutan one goal back at the one hour mark, it got Waters nervous. Could his team hold? This was the biggest World Cup Qualifier Banija had played since Waters first cycle- it was almost a do-or-die type match. Could they hold on?

It had made Waters nervous. It made him do things that he didn't normally do, when the lead tightened. Waters was a firm believer in staying aggressive- 'playing to win'. But today? Too much on the line. The nerves can get to anybody, right? And he played not to lose. Right after the goal, he brought on a defender for Idai Uster, putting on a 5 man defense- something they'd practiced a little bit, but had functionally never used before during the game. In the heat of the moment, Marcus Waters was known for making the right calls in the decisive moments at so many different stages.

But he was thinking that, with the clock ticking, he might be able to get away with it. And then, the play happened. Wijaya had the ball with his back towards goal, from about 30 yards out. And then, he saw the run- like a flash. "WATCH THE RUNNER! WATCH THE F#*#(@! RUNNER!" Waters was yelling and jumping, gesturing like a mad man. But it was a brilliant run, all the way from the left back position by Dwi Putra Kusuma. Nobody saw him on the field except for the man with the ball. Wijaya played the ball with
the outside of his foot, hit Kusuma perfectly in stride, and all of a sudden, the left back was in on goal, all alone, and onside.

"C'mon Wanda!" He muttered. Were Banija's dreams about to go up in smoke? The answer- yes. Banija's goalkeeper did not have a chance, as Dwi Putra Kusuma absolutely buried the shot into the upper corner. The 75,000 strong were mostly silenced, as the 4,000 visiting fans, in the corner, were going wild. Waters simply clasped his hands, knowing that Banija no longer controlled their own destiny. And he simply watched the Pemecutan celebrations, as they celebrated wildly. This goal meant that all Pemecutan would need is lone point at home, against Venmere, to make the World Cup Finals.

The final whistle blew a few minutes later. And a stunned crowd largely exited the stadium in silence, as the reality of the Cup of Harmony started to set in.

Bid to save World Cup Qualifying campaign 'in great peril' as Banija blow two goal lead against Pemecutan in their final home game of the Campaign

HOIMA, ANKOLE- "Perfection was demanded. And that- we were not able to achieve." Those words from the Banijan captain, Mzukisi Nzo, sum up what Banijans everywhere are feeling tonight about this World Cup Qualifying campaign. We all know the story of this campaign. It has certainly been quite the World Cup Qualifying campaign. The Banijans have tried to dig themselves out of the early hole we gave ourselves, where we started with just 3 wins and 2 draws in our first 8 games. And from that point on, with the manager's job in peril, it was clear- we had almost no margin for error.

And for a little bit, the team responded. We started to really pick up form at home. We played tough and gritty on the road. Even in the games against other elite opposition(Zwangzug), we were able to grind out tough, one goal wins. We went on the road and picked up a very late comeback win, which really kickstarted the belief in this national team, that we could defy all the odds, all the expectations, defy our early campaign form- and come back.

We picked up win after win after win. After winning just 3 of our first 8 games, and that 8th game being a smashing 3-0 road loss to this same Pemecutan side that will like win this World Cup Qualification group, we picked up 8 consecutive wins in a row. The margin for error was the absolute smallest, trying to catch a lot of teams from behind, including both Pemecutan and Zwangzug. And this draw, this second hall collapse against a team that has surely proven themselves worthy of the World Cup berth that they are about to earn, is an absolute gut punch.

It leaves the Kadongo Kamu in a position that we haven't faced all World Cup decade- peering over the edge, with the Cup of Harmony the most likely outcome. There are rumors floating around that the RBSA are looking at former Baker Paker and Farfadillis NT manager, and currently S-FPL TV analyst, Pam Scott, to lead the team. Omar Sanyang, at Herzegovina City FC, is rumored to be a candidate, and George Wangolo, the former Galactico longlister, national team defender, and current national team manager for the Independent Athletes from Quebec, would also be a candidate.

But although we are in third place- it is not over yet. Here is the table, and the relevant matchups for Matchday 18. Since it is the final day of World Cup Qualifying, all Group 11 matchups will naturally kick off at the same time.

*  Group 11                           Pld    W   D   L    GF   GA   GD   Pts
1 Pemecutan 17 12 4 1 44 24 +20 40 P
2 Zwangzug 17 11 4 2 27 11 +16 37
3 Banija 17 11 3 3 39 23 +16 36 Y

And the relevant matchups.

Pemecutan v. Venmere
Southwest Eastnorth v. Zwangzug
Cheetahs and Reptiles Coalison v. Banija

Zwangzug has to travel to Southwest Eastnorth. Can Southwest Eastnorth get at least a point? If the home side can collect a draw or a win, that leaves Banija in a strong position. But it will be necessary to collect all three points in Cheetahs and Reptiles Coalison. Will that happen? Is it possible? Busukuma casinos are offering 15/1 odds that Banija makes the playoff(and 2/1 odds for Zwangzug to make the playoff)- but anything can happen, right? Send your prayers to Southwest Eastnorth, as the eyes of Banijan soccer fans everywhere will be glued to the split screen on Thursday night's closer.
