The Chiefdom of Copper Cuprum is a small island nation located somewhere in between the Lazarus Ocean and the northern waters of the region of Esportiva. According to local legends, the Chiefdom was founded back in 537 AD when Chief Wun of Wa Wun (currently known as the capital city Wa Deg) and his confederation defeated the confederation of Chief Nor of Ken Nor, subjugating the latter and forcing the surviving chiefs to swear fealty to Chief Wun and only Chief Wun, thus finally uniting all clans and tribes on the island under one ruler. However, the Chiefdom would not be discovered by another nation until 1914 when the Fleftic Navy was searching for the daughter of then-President Rufus Wole Mensah, whose ship had vanished in a strong storm near the island. The discovery of the island, compounded by the fact that the Chief of Copper Cuprum at the time, Zed, had married Fatimah Aliramah Mensah, resulted in a sudden and unexpected alliance between Copper Cuprum and Abanhfleft that lasts to this day.

As far as sports goes, rugby union is arguably the second or third-most popular sport in Copper Cuprum behind the undisputed leader rugby league and the more contested association football. Rugby union was brought here by Fleftic rugby union enthusiasts who heard that their sister code had become popular in the Chiefdom, and they wanted to see if their code could have the same popularity with the Copperites. The ritual of the Copperite national rugby league team killing a chicken before the start of a match, seen as a good luck charm by the Copperites, was soon adopted by the national rugby union team, and they will use it to full effect since they are playing at their home ground. The primary currency in Copper Cuprum is the copper coin, but the Fleftic new penenk, Espo, and NS dollar are also accepted as legal tender since carrying fistfuls of copper coins is practically an art form that only the Copperites have managed to master.

THE CHIEFDOM OF COPPER CUPRUM
NATIONAL RUGBY UNION TEAM

This is the second time in four years that Copper Cuprum will be participating in the Rugby Union World Cup. Rugby is the most popular sport in Copper Cuprum, and although rugby league is the more popular code in the Chiefdom, both rugby union and rugby sevens still have a decent following. Copper Cuprum had been long isolated from the international community since it is a small island archipelago located deep in the middle of the Lazarus Ocean, far from any regular shipping lanes since man first sailed ships. The nation was only discovered by the Fleftic Navy in 1914, when they were searching for the daughter of President Rufus Wole Mensah, whose ship was wrecked in the general vicinity of the islands. Arriving in the capital of the islands, they discovered that Chief Zed had made the President's daughter his queen, generating a sudden alliance between the two countries. And Copper Cuprum was also rich in copper, so that was a good thing for Abanhfleft too...

BASIC INFORMATION
Name of nation:
The Chiefdom of Copper Cuprum
Demonym: Copperite
Kits: Initially, the Copperite national rugby sevens team was not supposed to wear any kits as ordinary people know them. Instead they would have played wearing only white loincloths and nothing else. However, in the interests of modesty and compliance with the international standard, the Copperite team has elected to choose a new uniform with alternating black and white hoops and white shorts.
Team colors: Black and white
Style modifier: +1.00 (A balanced team with a slight focus on offense)
Head coach: Count Tumale Boweba (59 y/o, Copper Cuprum)
Note 1: It is Copperite tradition to slit the throat of a live chicken before a game and then spread the spilled blood on the field. This is the Copperites' version of the haka.
Note 2: Copperite names are arranged as clan name followed by personal name. If you have to refer to a specific Copperite then refer to them by the name that appears last, which is their personal name. Referring to a single Copperite person by their clan name is a common mistake for foreigners, but one which Copperites hope to correct them upon because doing such is considered offensive by Copperites. Copperite culture considers individuals to be different from their clans, and thus will usually refer to their foreign counterparts by their first names as well because they are not familiar with the concept of surnames and family names.

Rugby is the third most popular sport in Elejamie, behind ice hockey and football. While rugby league has a small but loyal fanbase and the ERC Sevens (held before the start of the ERC season) is a massive success, it's rugby union that reigns supreme in Elejamie. With the ERC being very successful since its inaugural season in 1978/79, the ERC Grand Final being one of the most-watched sporting events in the country and the Elejamian Universities XV (an all-star team made up of the best players from universities around the country) having an annual tour that tends to sell very well, as well as a plethora of talent over the years, it's safe to say that rugby union will be popular in Elejamie for years to come.

In the 30th Rugby Union World Cup hosted by both Quebec and Ko-oren, the Elejamian side not only won all of their group stage games but also smashed the opposition. 54-3 against Desotonia, 52-16 against HUElavia and 45-9 again Hebitaka meant a first place finish in their group with 151 points for and 28 points against, meaning a +123 point differential. However, they either seemed to have tired themselves out from scoring or wanted to be a bit more sporting as their following games were a bit less "run up the scoreboard" as they went on to beat Pratapgadh 23-18 in the Round of 16 and Quebec 23-7 in the quarter-finals. However, it was Baggieland who'd provide a shock win over then reigning-silver medallists, winning 26-15 before getting stomped 33-9 by Lisander in the finals; Elejamie, meanwhile, managed to regain some dignity with a close but high-scoring 36-32 win over the Quintessence of Dust to come home with a bronze medal. The ERF boycotted the 31st edition of the tournament due to the collapse of the NSRB and what they had dubbed "the logistical and televisual nightmare of a Union and League World Cup held at the same time"* but they are hoping that they can return to the top ten in the rankings by the end of the tournament.

*All ICly just to let you all know. OOCly it was because my depression was much worse than normal, although the massive schism and fighting going on about the state of this sport on here did not help my mental state much.

Laneriti Stadium, Coventry, AVEN
Image

Home to the national football team and the national rugby union team, Laneriti Stadium was built in 1955 after the Elejamian FA decided on a permanent ground for the national football team. After narrowing down 400 options down to three, they eventually decided to name it after Arik Lanerit (aka Laneriti, d. 1915), a famous Iyilim politician who helped shape this country just as it was getting started. Originally designed to fit 60,000 people, it was expanded in the mid-90s to accomodate 82,500, which has remained the official capacity ever since. It has hosted every single Cup of Elejamie final since 2000 (as well as 23 previous cup finals before that) and all but one ERC (Elejamian Rugby Championship) Grand Final since the play-offs were introduced in time for the start of the 1990-91 ERC season; due to scheduling conflictments, the 2011 Grand Final was played at the Edgebaston Dome, with the Murgon Bullfrogs beating the Auckhampton Birch Trees 20-15 in extra time.

The stadium in the background is the Starmath Den, home ground of the Starmath Rovers football team in League Two and Coventry Jesters rugby union team, which play in the Elejamian Rugby Championship, having been promoted at the end of the last season. It's also used as the training ground for the national football/soccer team, with the national rugby (both codes) team having its own training ground outside of Coventry. It can also hold up to 15,000 people.

Godmod injuries to my players: Y (same as above)

Send my players off: Y (again, one per match even if it's a double yellow. Longest they can be out is one game.)

  • If you're interested in having any of my players playing for any of your clubs, send me a TG or a DM on Discord (elejamie#1374) and hopefully we should be able to sort things out.
  • Adam Gates (FB) can also play on the wing, David White (L) can also be a Number 8/Eightman (much like when he was a substitute) and Adrian Drew-Ciobanu can either be a loosehead or a tighthead prop.

RUWC - Ko-orenite National Team - The Dragonflies
Image

Backs
The fullback is tremendously important to the Ko-orenite game. Having looked at (and suffered at the hand of) the Darmeni two-fullback system, we employ that in troublesome times as well. Warmeling and Finnerty might appear as left and right winger despite their natural positions at their clubs - they're just that good. The Carrington brothers are selected at centre, with Dwight being a much more instinctive player who makes everything look easy. Weldon isn't at the same level. All in all, the Ko-orenite game has moved much more towards the forwards over the last half decade or so - so the backs aren't the the ace up the sleeve or trick in the hole they were during Ko-oren's recent NT success.

Fullbacks
FB Meobich yPheffchawll (28) Mawrystwyth Phoenix, a careful, buff precise passer.
FB Melton Scenay (31) Idyllwild Coronae, a solemn, bulky perfect passer.
FB Kagageerra Bilaranora (29) Tarrashall Travellers, a conservative, plump debater.

Wingers
LW Tei Warmeling (23) Mayara Wanderers-Vulpecula, a solemn, pacy tactician.
LW Orville Finnerty (28) Ansonville Comets, a determined, staunch gladiator.
RW Linus Howbrick (21) Tarrashall Travellers, a mean, towering workhorse.
RW Twngawn yChonpad (23) Llandy Bulls, a frivolous, nimble tackler.

Centres
IC Dwight Carrington (23) Eaglebury Aquila, a abrasive, fit creator.
IC Weldon Carrington (24) Willowbourne Foxes, a reliable, strong precise kicker.
OC Masahiko Morimoto (24) Ansonville Comets, a popular, burly debater.
OC Wilford Leroy Broderib (26) Willowbourne Foxes, a resourceful, well built cheater.

Halves
Wilmer never was the captain and leader that he's now asked to be, especially as he developed later in his career. Now, at 33, he has to be ready. Whithingham has had a few injury issues over the course of last season and can't play every match from beginning to end yet. Their styles are different: Wilmer is tenacious and does things on-the-fly, while Whithingham is more of a planner, and he's got a better mind for how, when, and where to launch attacks based on how the match has gone so far. The first line of decision-making is for Vasseur, though. He knows various styles and can work with pretty much anything.

FH Eldon Wilmer (33) Maynard Andromeda, a sympathetic, stringy opportunist.
FH Nimrod Whithingham (28) Eaglebury Aquila, a helpful, petite strategist.
SH Ba Vasseur (27) Greencaster Galaxy, a chatty, petite journeyman.
SH Jinnamoora Amaranga (32) Tarrashall Travellers, a sincere, nimble cheater.

Forwards
The flanker positions are slightly problematic, so as the team has a lot of talented second rowers, they might be asked to go back one row and help out there. At the same time, we have true stars at the hooker position (with Rougeau arguably the best player on the archipelago right now: making the difference defensively and offensively). Chipway is a very different personality but is the only thing close to Rougeau's brilliance. yMhalmawm and Moshindi are also great assets, but are mostly employed defensively.

Number 8
N8 Faramond Chipway (23) Willowbourne Foxes, a polite, instinctive clown.
N8 Drystan yIoganmac (20) Mawrystwyth Phoenix, a decisive, bony visionary.
N8 Aaron Kenningnock (22) Aubury Swans, a amusing, muscular controller.

Flankers
BF Merrill Connor (26) Willowbourne Foxes, a understanding, strong creator.
BF Algernon Atkinson (26) Ansonville Comets, a fanatical, stringy clown.
BF Charlie Wilkinson (32) Eaglebury Aquila, a patient, burly try scorer.
OF Dossirla Moshindi (21) Greencaster Galaxy, a outspoken, instinctive supporter.

Locks
LS Llafawm yMhalmawm (28) Llandy Bulls, a complex, towering dynamo.
LS Gilles Boudreaux (22) Tarrashall Travellers, a manipulative, swift gladiator.
LS Danylo Ager (20) Ansonville Comets, a introverted, fast tactician.
LS Gene Weddall (25) Idyllwild Coronae, a uncompromising, short trickster.
LS Al Jauffret (28) Greencaster Galaxy, a hostile, quick technician.
RS Gemhaeg yDdwffrell (28) Penstead Bears, a humorous, slim wall.

Props
TP Cristobo Sanjurjo (21) Llandy Bulls, a dim, tall professional.
TP Kris Klaasen (25) Willowbourne Foxes, a impractical, fast dynamo.
LP Lawrence Conapple (20) Greencaster Galaxy, a private, athletic creator.
LP Cowan Holden (26) Mayara Wanderers-Vulpecula, a moody, buff assister.
LP Newddlawdd yTewnchaeg (34) Llandy Bulls, a cynical, thin journeyman.

Hookers
HO Cyprien Rougeau (23) Willowbourne Foxes, a disruptive, agile precise passer.
HO Loyal Farrell (23) Maynard Andromeda, a intelligent, well built journeyman.

Style & Strategy
Style mod: -5. Ko-oren plays an extremely risk-averse style with an emphasis on kicking (both defensively and offensively). They rarely play dirty, but do employ some gamesmanship depending on who's on the field.

Trivia
At home, Ko-oren will wear a mainly green jersey with blue and yellow trim. As an away jersey (and to avoid colour clashes), there's stories of a white jersey with green and blue trim lying somewhere in a supply closet, but we're sure the staff manages to find them in time.

The NSRB is dead. Long live the new era of U3 Rugby. Yes, after a long 2-year wait, the rugby is finally back and this time, under new management. What this will mean for the future of the sport internationally is yet to be fully realised but no matter what happens now, we're in Copper Cuprum and we have both Ko-oren and Trolleborg in our 4-team group. The more things change, the more they remain the same. Jacob Peterson managed 3 wins in the dual-WCs last time out but missed out on the playoffs on Point Differential alone. This time, without the shadow of twins Louise's RL Jags around, the Jaguars will be hoping to avoid being on the outside looking in once again.

COMMONWEALTH OF BAKER PARK
RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION

Image

World Cup XXXII marks the first international appearance of a full XV side in multiverse competition for the Commonwealth of Baker Park; after a grueling apprenticeship in Sevens that saw a 1-9 debut through the XIV Olympics and the AVBF--outscored 348-84 prior to finishing with a pair of wins in the pool stage then being bounced from the Plate competition in Neu Engellon--the Blues and Grays have won 21 and drawn 3 over their last 30 fixtures in the 14 player, fourteen minute version of the sport.

The Commonwealth of Baker Park Rugby Union was founded in February 1954; it consolidated the governing authority that individual state unions held over sport since the turn of the century.

Currently, the CRU organizes the country's domestic club national championship, the Montieth Shield, as well as the Westerly Challenge Cup, open to all professional and amateur clubs.

Rugby was popular in the first decade after the founding of the Commonwealth; as American-style football grew in participation, rugby clubs saw a decrease in the number of registered players at established clubs. Into the 1920's, rugby saw their decreasing numbers level off and by 1931 there was a renewed interest in the game in certain areas of the country. Towns and boroughs with significant Welsh and Scottish populations led the way as rugby made inroads on the number of young men who took up active sports club memberships. The Ezra Rugby Football Union (ERFU) and the Endover Rugby Union (ERU) had far more clubs competing than their counterparts in the Baker Park Rugby Federation (BPRF), Osheana Ruby Union (ORU), and the Rugby Union of Lynchana, Midalia and St Leon (RULMS); the first Challenge Cup was organized by the ERFU in 1929, inviting any club in the Commonwealth playing the union code to participate. Endborough City RFC won the inaugural trophy, and over the next 19 editions from 1930-53, Ezran or Endoveran clubs were champions on 14 occasions.

There had never been a unified convention of the various state bodies until Sylvester Montieth, Chief Secretary of the ERFU, proposed a meeting in the winter of 1953. He wanted to find some common ground between the state organizations in order to work on increasing participation and a possible fully national body to help with technical development of players. His proposal for the formation of a Union made up of all the state level competitions was unanimously approved at the Frazier House Hotel in Hamilton, which marked the beginning of the CRU.

The national club championship was established in 1956 with a structure of two 8 team divisions with promotion and relegation playoffs, 3 years later it was expanded to 10 teams each; it was known as the Frazier Shield until 1970, when it was renamed for Sylvester Montieth, who had been elected the first Chairman of the CRU and served until 1960.

The influence that the ERFU had over the sport even after the formation of the CRU can still be seen today; the national team's shirts are Navy Blue & Gray hoops, which were adapted from the shirts worn by Ezra's most successful club, Middletown Old Boys (now Middletown RFC), originally made up of ex-students from the University of Ezra branch, whose colors were also the same; the legend of the university's adopting the colors is rooted in the story that quite a few men who had been members of the Army regiment also known The Blues & Grays were among the earliest enrolled students at UE/Middletown.

Barnitz Stadium in the city has hosted more international test rugby matches than any other ground in the country, and more recently the final day of competition for the first two Atlantian Oceania Rugby 7's Championships, which Baker Park claimed the title on both occasions (reflected by the orange & blue stars on the crest).

Style Mod--+1.3
As a rule, Baker Park sports trend towards aggressive, offense oriented play; the average fan wants to see scoring, although they are savvy enough to recognize an action packed defensive stalemate is also worthy of respect. In real rugby terms, most clubs are back oriented in attack.

Nickname(s)--there is no single consensus between the BlueGrays, Blues & Grays or Hoops as a preference (even 'Grays & Blues' wouldn't be problematic although historically inaccurate--see above).

The basic design of the Baker Park jersey has remained consistent since the first international match played in 1957; the late 1980's & early 90's saw narrower hoops--four blue and three gray--but a return to the traditional pattern came in 1995. White shorts and blue & gray hooped socks have remained standard over the years, and an all-white change strip has also been the practice of the CRU (which is a nod to the "Ghost Whites" kit of the BP National Soccer Team) since the mid 1960's.

After much less than successful debute at the XXXI Rugby Union World Cup our “unionists” return to the field, with a hope if not upset established teams than to rise interest to this sport in Trolleborg.

Coach – Trond Torquelston (58 y.o.). Before XXXI tournament begins, Torquelston was chosen by collective vote of every interested section of Trolleborg population. Despite not too bright performance of his team, he was voted to coach position again. All potential other candidates decline to compete. For this tournament he made some sort of turnover in the lineup, but it will be seen, are team is competitive enough now.

Greetings, compatriots!
It’s TTV from the Copper Cuprum, and while the tournament has not begun уet, we will introduce you, dear viewers, to the world of our national rugby league. Although we at TTV spend much efforts while tried to cover the events in it in as much detail as possible, a considerable part of the audience not only does not remember the vital turns and events of the last championship, but even hardly distinguishes one type of rugby from another. And so today, while this sort of this sport in the spotlight, we will talk a little about the league and begin to review its teams.

As you all know, after the reforms a few years ago, there are only eight teams in our league playing each other six times a season, three times home and three away. There was an opinion at one time that it would be useful to make all teams representing the regions of the country, one basic team in each of the regions where this sport is historically popular, but then this order of things was extended only to the Rugby League. So no changes in the fates and names of the teams that received tickets to the league happened, only there were additions of RR to the names of clubs representing the regions. At the moment, the question of building a system of divisions and the cup of the country is being discussed, so if you are not indifferent to the fate of domestic rugby, then if you want, you can participate in the discussion, right now they are starting to collect opinions.

The last tournament turned out to be rather peculiar - the teams approached the middle line, having a pronounced leader and visible outsider. “Torstein Hamme” led everyone else by 15 points, “Foss RR” was 13 points behind the nearest team, while the second and seventh teams were only five points apart. And by the 36th round, only one point separated the two main competitors. Everything ended, as we know, with the victory of “Torstein Hamme”, but with a margin of only two points from the second prize-winner “Nord Torkelli” and four from the third, “Ethnedal Rugby”, and this third came off 11 points from a group of three more teams, while this group secure a significant lead over the two outsiders.

1. Torstein Hamme 78 poins
2. Nord Torkelli 76
3. Ethnedal Rugby 74
4. Stenhusmuire 63
5. Rinkebing RR 60
6. Bergeland 57
7. Hornsruud 48
8. Foss RR 39

And to begin with, we will get acquainted with the two teams that took the unenviable last two places. “Foss RR” is a rugby team with a long tradition, one of the oldest in the league, but has had bad luck lately and management has made a number of bad decisions, the most important of which we believe was the frequent change of coaches. Still, coaching is not so unimportant that you can count on constant success with regular changes in direction and attempts to implement different playing strategies. It is noteworthy that, despite the weak performance of the team, the head coach of the national team took one of its forwards to the world cup, so team was not in the last place due to the lack of talents in the lineup. “Hornsruud” was playing the fifteenth season in its history, and usually hovering halfway between last and sixth places. This season started very cheerfully for the local fans, and after 16 rounds team was second with ten victories, which inspired high hopes – and then team game the rest of season was nothing short of catastrophic: Horners having won only five victories in the remaining games. So far, the general public can only guess what happened there, although experts believe that there was a conflict between management and players.

That's all for today, and in the next issue of our series we will discuss the three teams that finished in the middle.

Barunian National Rugby Team
"The Waves"

It's been a while since Barunia have graced the world cup, and a long time since they took home the trophy.
Gone are many of the heroes of that time: Martin, Mortlock, Rogers. In their place are a whole lot of youngsters; the next generation.
Will they rise to the top as the new champions of International Rugby?
Only three players have previous caps: Emmanuel Ngobe, Simon Charter, and Jack Martinez-Young. As always, it's a side dominated by players
from the Bucks, the most dominant side in Barunia's domestic rugby championship.

Play style
Barunian players tend to look for the gaps rather than plow through the opposition. They'll use the full width of the pitch, and will often use long passes to catch opposing players out of position. They favour a kicking game too, and will take any opportunity for a field goal. Penalty kicks are preferred over a scrum, and they'll also chase after balls kicked forward in regular play.

The Hannasean Hamsters
Image

Rugby union is the most popular winter sport in the Guild Federation, and yet surprisingly the last of the three codes in which the Hamsters made their debuts. Results to date have been supremely disappointed, with weak showings at RWC29 and 30, and a failure to even qualify for 31.

In Hannasean Fluid Time (HFT), this occurs 2 years after RWC31.

Squad

A standard 31-player squad has been selected. Injury replacements will be called up only in the event the player is unable to continue the tournament. Unless otherwise stated, the first, or first two, players listed for each position will start. Players in bold played at RWC30.

Dave Carrey's Guide to the 32nd Rugby World Cup
Dave Carrey - Al Deg, Copper Cuprum

Normally, this would be the part where I would recap our performance in the last tournament. All the matches we won, the matches we lost and drew. The scores we ran up, the matches where we kept a tight game. Any potential bonus tries. And, of course, our runs in the elimination stage, the part of the tournament where it's all "win or go home". The point where I talk about who we beat and, eventually, who we fell to and at what point. But there's a reason why I'm not doing so here.

We weren't at the last tournament.

Image
Paul Debenham, who will be absent from the
tournament due to injury.
Yes, we had boycotted the 31st edition of the Rugby Union World Cup. Originally the plan was to quit the world of international rugby and instead concentrate on domestic matters, a la the national ice hockey team. And, indeed, much like them it was an idea that didn't last too long although we went in the very next contest instead of a two-contest break for the Icy Elephants or Ice-a-phants or whatever they're calling themselves now. But why did the boycott happen in the first place? Simply put, there hadn't been an officially-sanctioned Rugby League World Cup for sometime and people were getting a bit disgruntled about it, to the point where eventually it was decided that it along with the next tournament will be held at the same time as the next Union World Cup. As much of a logistical nightmare as it was, it happened around the same time as the dissolution of the old NSRB for reasons I am not entirely sure about and won't discuss lest this turns into a "he said she said" scenario which ultimately saw our official rugby board withdraw.

However it was only the ERF that boycotted it over here in Elejamie, as they announced that the national teams would not compete in any official or unofficial capacity and our referees and TMO weren't included on the list of officials who'd be officiating any matches. Those unaffiliated with the organisation weren't affected by it at all, something the ERF respected because it probably would've been an abuse of their power if they showed that they weren't. Matches were still aired on live TV and journalists and bloggers, myself and Rubifaman included, were more than welcome to make the trip over to the Quintessence of Dust to report on the proceedings. While I'll let her recount the league portion for the next RLWC, I'll just talk about the union side of things here because, despite our absence as well as the absence of Neu Engollon and Hutanjia, the tournament was still fairly well run with plenty of exciting games.

Games such as reigning champs Lisander blitzing the Busoga Islands 60-0 and HUElavia demolishing StrayaRoos 61-17, both on the opening day. And another noteworthy opening game was Darmen just edging out TJUN-ia with a single point in a match that ended 31-30 for the visitors. Speaking of Lisander, they'd deal another hard-hitting blow-out a couple of games later, this time 52-0 against Brookstation. And 60-0 against the Natanians and Nosts. Basically, the Irises were the team to beat, especially since they had scored the most points (229, the only team to go past 200), conceded the fewest (31) and, as expected, have the highest point differential (+198, TWO AND A QUARTER TIMES the second best team who had +88). So who ended up winning the tournament? Surprisngly it was Kelssek, a team who was a bit of a darkhorse (and also smashed StrayaRoos 74-3 in their last group stage game) but held on for long enough to finally lift that trophy thanks to a 34-29 win over Nova Anglicana. Lisander, meanwhile, finished fourth after losing their semi-final match to the Lions 37-13 and their bronze medal game 31-18 to Baggieland.

A fun tournament all-round and it would've been interesting to see how well we would've done. We probably wouldn't have been as scoring as the other big nations but we still would've given the opposition a run for their money. It probably also meant we wouldn't have dropped out of the top ten, as we are now ranked 11th. It should be a minor setback and, with any luck, we should be back in the top ten in a tournament or two. Probably somewhere between 6th and 10th but it would be a step in the right direction. But who will we be facing in our quest to get back there? Who are our groupmates down in Group G?

First up, we will be playing Hannasea. They weren't at the last Union World Cup, although they did host the League World Cup instead. They were, however, at the tournament before in Quebec and Ko-oren, although they were drawn into the Quebecois half of the tournament. And they didn't really have a good time there. They lost their opener to TJUN-ia 12-10, although fortunately they were nice enough to escape with a losing bonus point. The match against their next opponent, however, didn't go as smoothly and they ended up losing 23-14. Fortuntely they managed to restore some pride with a 27-7 win over Quebecois Acadiana to finish third. They might be in for a repeat performance but I'm still confident they'll play their hearts out and really bring it to the edge.

Next up is Lochario. They're currently unranked in the competition. They're also a familiar name, as for the longest time their name seemed familiar to me but I couldn't pin down what tournament they were in. After a quick bit of research, they were at the 27th Union World Cup over in Ko-oren. There, they were drawn into Group C and went on to finish fourth as they only won one game (24-17 over Pius Desurongcrandis) and lost their other three. Including a 13-0 shut-out to Alice Bay on the opening day. There's been a bit of time since their last appearance so I do have an inkling that they'll be in for a bit of a rough ride. No real stompings, except maybe at the hands of the team in the next paragraph, but they won't really have that many chances either.

Image
Dan Mitchell, who will soon be retiring, giving a
thumbs up to fans after being presented with a medal
after the team finished top of the leaderboard at the
end of the 2018/19 season. We wish him well.
And, finally, we have our last opponent. Nova Anglicana, the aforementioned team that gave the Hamsters of Hannasea that defeat I mentioned earlier. They're currently #1 in the rankings and they're the only team in the group who were at the last tournament. They finished 4-1-0 in their group with their sole non-win being a 19-19 draw with the Grearish Union. They also got a 46-5 win over the hapless United Adaikes to help them finish top of their group. In the knock-out stage of the tournament they crushed the Union hosts in the Quintessence of Dust 52-16 in the quarter-finals and elimiated favourites Lisander 37-13 to set up a date with Kelssek in the finals. As previously stated, they lost 34-29 but it was still an incredible run. And they're back and they'll definitely be a thorn in our side.

So where will we finish? Second most probably but I won't rule out a first place finish. The match against Nova Anglicana would really require the team to fire on all cylinders if we need to come away with a win, something I won't rule out but at the same time we have to accept that it might not happen. However, we have an easy opponent in Lochario and a middling opponent in Hannasea so we do still have a chance here. We probably won't blow them out of the water but we probably will get a few tries past them so there's that.

Any other big names? Group A seems to be a very decent group with Baggieland, Barunia, the hosts and Baker Park (who have competed in tournaments in the past but now have to compete again just to regain their ranking) having to duke it out. While I won't go as far as to call it a "group of death", I will say that my attention will be focused here when I'm not cheering on our boys. Group C, meanwhile, has reigning champions Kelssek taking on The Grearish Union, Kriegiersien and newcomers Dotivija in an attempt to retain their crown. And Group H has Ko-oren, TJUN-ia, Trolleborg and the United Adaikes, making it one of two groups to have no newcomers in it (the other being Group D). Don't get me wrong, the other groups have some decent sides in them but the three I have mentioned in this paragraph are the ones to watch.

Any other big news? Yes. Lisander is absent from this competition. I have no idea why this is or when they will be back, all I know is that their absence will be felt among everyone taking part and, when they return, they will be welcomed back with opened arms. Elsewhere, Elejamian head coach Pablo Cartagena has announced that he will be stepping down from coaching the national team sometime in the next couple of tournaments, although since he has not stated when he'll be doing so it's just a matter of when he'll be more specific and if he doesn't get fired first. And there have been a few changes from our last tournament. Paul Debenham's missing the tournament due to that injury he picked up a couple of weeks ago, although fortunately Tiago Sebastião Mendonça Álvarez, better known to you and me as Guinho, has offered to step in as fly-half even if he works better a scrum-half; Pael Rimitinael would work better as a starting fly-half, especially since I saw his work for Rosetta University, but maybe Coach Cartagena has a plan in there. And Dan Mitchell has announced that he'll be retiring from international rugby after this tournament and domestic rugby at the end of next season so hopefully he'll go out with a bang.

And, with that, that's all your news for this competition. I haven't been posting much lately due to there not being a ton to write about but, in the coming months, we should have the ERC play-offs, the Grand Final, the ERC 7s and mayhaps a whole bunch of other tournaments to pique your interest. And to get my creative juices pumping as well. In the meanwhile I'm going to sit back and hopefully enjoy some high-octane rugby action. I hope you're able to do the same too. Dave out.

OOC: Once again, those are purely IC reasons for my absence. In reality I was dealing with some severe depression at the time and thus was in no real mood to compete (and what I was already involved in I just did the bare minimum), although what was going on at the time didn't help either.

Postby Quintessence of Dust » Mon Mar 07, 2022 7:16 pm

Nomenclature: Our country is called Quintessence of Dust, commonly shorted to QoD or Quod (but never Dust). Our people are called Quodites or, rarely, Quintessentials (but never Dusties). Our team is called the All Greys.

Kit: Take a wild guess.

Seriously, it’s all grey.

History: Quintessence of Dust have a proud rugby history which includes being former Rugby World Challenge Cup (international club competition) and Six Nations (international invitational) winners, World Cup runners-up, and World Cup and Six Nations hosts. Most of these transpired over 130 years ago. Players from that era can reasonably be expected to have passed away or be living in retirement communities on Mars (advances in 22nd century medical science have extended Quodite lives into the 150+ range, but have done nothing to cure the wear and tear of contact sport). Since returning to world rugby, the All Greys have reached the World Cup semifinals and hosted another edition of the tournament, but success in club rugby has been slower in coming.

Domestic popularity: Rugby remains the pre-eminent national sport. It has always been the favoured game of the Anglo-French majority (now a minority); it was never taken up as much by the later waves of Fenno-scandian, Eastern and Central European, and Asian immigrants, despite attempts by sports authorities to encourage integration. Token stars from minority communities still tend to get a lot of focus amid attempts to popularise the game outside its northwest support base. Regardless of Quintessence of Dust’s international absence, the Premier League has been rumbling along happily enough for the past century with a largely unchanging roster of teams. A few players choose to play Ultimate Rugby in the Hannasean Federation in search of better pay, or join the Lunar Leagues in their dotage where light contact rules are in force.

Style of play: The All Greys have always lived up to their name with a conservative, defensive style of play with heavy emphasis on relentless forward play, dogged but unspectacular tackling, and tactical kicking from hand. The line-out team of the All Greys’ heyday was semi-legendary. Back play has generally been more limited, relying on crash centres, powerful wingers, and very little in the way of fluidity. A photograph of the backs successfully connecting three consecutive passes is framed in the National Hall of Fame and is considered a rarer artefact than buried treasure.

RP permissions: I have two strict permissions: no RPing my players being involved in violence (heavy tackling is fine but no touchline brawls); and no using photographs and saying they represent my players. Please respect these absolutely.

I have one additional preference, which is not a demand, but a request. xkoranate scores can be broken down a number of different ways: a team scoring 15 points could have anything from 3T, 0C, to 5DG. My request is that if you assign my points, you do so in a way that minimises unconverted tries. I would rather my team score 5 penalties and 0 tries than 3 or even 1 unconverted try. Additionally, please limit drop goals, my team will be very conservative on this front and really only drop if it’s an 80th minute, 3 point-difference situation.

Given the above rather stiff permission, I will compensate with laxity on all other fronts. You may choose my scorers and even my lineup, assign yellow and red cards, RP injuries, and generally go nuts. Just leave my poor kicking stats alone!

Roster: Default starting XV is listed, with reserves. Some chopping and changing is to be expected, and some positional flexibility permitted (nothing crazy, but obviously the reserve openside can cover No. 8, a reserve lock play blindside, or the three-quarters switch around). In our canon, RWC31 happened four years ago. Players marked in bold are returning.

Loosehead prop: Dylan Gigot (Bumpy Biscuits)
Bobby Turner (Toonmar), Lio Fürst (Albersau)

Hooker: Kokan Kirishima (Nowy Orpington Cellists)

René Gérin (Central), Zac Adams (Bumpy Biscuits), Jian Huang (New Cleethorpes Deathshriek)

Isaac Marchand (Tourseilles), Jay Robles (Central)

Openside flanker: Artan Tušek (Nowy Orpington Cellists)
Arlo Henly (Highmark City Irish)

No. 8: Dong Xiang (Nowy Orpington Cellists)

Scrum-half: Arsène Calvet (Ballat)
Yijun Du (Nowy Orpington Cellists), Yimu Song (Priassa)

Tactics: The Darmeni game puts an emphasis on territorial advantage, thereby making the team's kicking game its most important asset. Darmeni teams will go for three points at any chance they get; receiving the resulting kick-off following the score will give them an advantage in possession as well. Scoring actual tries is very much an afterthought.

Quebec and Shingoryeo Rugby Union National Team

Nickname: Grim Reapers
Acronym: QUE
Denonym: Quebecois (Preferred), Quebecer (that's fine)
Official Supporters Group: The Bubonic Plague
Style Mod: Lowest Possible (usually -5)

Head Coach: Philippe Leonard, 61
Lead Assistant Coach: Merrick-Lee Lessard, 38

The smaller pie rugby world has won in the Quebecois sporting world has meant that the rugby, as a whole, has taken greater approaches to play professionally alongside other nations in the Quebecois Commonwealth, whose interest and financials allow for international travels. Most of the members of the Quebecois and the Acadianan national teams do play in the Quebecois Commonwealth Rugby SuperLeague, a 16-team league of four nations (Quebec and Shingoryeo, Quebecois Acadiana, Busoga Islands and Quebecois Sudafrique union). Because of this, however, it takes greater efforts for the national team camps or schedules to be put together, and the team's cohesion will likely take years to develop over time.

This squad, while surprising all with their superb defence and their ability to minimise mistakes made on scrums in recent tournaments, still has lots to go in international experience. While their tenth-place rank on international rugby union rankings is considered respectable, most fans at home and abroad know this is probably too high even by their standards and will be content with a playoff appearance this time. Thus, it is expected that this team be frustrated more often than not, and the fans to remain patient with their journeys as they continue to battle for relevance.
