Part 8 [7] – The Legend of the Rapid Flintlock: Allow us to introduce ourselves. Oh and well, the Davy Jones’ Locker? It’s true, as it turns out.

Chief Aviator Eveline Gwen Tracer Hepburn “Fate of Existence and the Omniverse” Ellen Trixie Caitlin Foxworthy Avril Verlene Celinda Sammy Doris T-Rev Oxton Arielle Lindall Leslie Vitesse Allison celebrated together with the crew, having quite a lot of rum, along with a couple of fresh fruits – which by some miracle were still good for consumption. “Well to be fair, it’s only perhaps nearly a day,” Eveline thought to herself, biting into a piece of orange that was given to her. Obviously, Eveline is immune to the scourges of scurvy and whatnot, but as she found out multiple times, it’s better to let it be and go with the flow. For that moment, the flow was one of the celebrations as aforementioned, Ivo and his crew singing sea shanties, followed by playing a couple of card games. Eveline got into the action as well, using her powers just for fair and small amounts to even the odds against rules unfamiliar.

The games and celebration went on for another hour, until it was time to set sail. “But first,” Ivo declared, “We must send these poor souls to the Locker!” Eveline nodded, looking at the causalities from the previous skirmish. As was established, there were 3 dead Expedition crew members, along with 6 pirates. “Alas, such is life on the sea. Violent ends,” he simply said before going down to the lower floor of the ship, “You stay here, Lass. We will be back before you know it.” Eveline watched as the rest of the crew – some of them giving her glimpses of being in awe, following Sir Ivo and slowly made their way down as they were soon obscured by the darkness and shadows of the dimly lit lower decks. While she waited for them to come back, Eveline stood at one side of the ship and sat down, with some crew members slowly approaching her as if they wanted to strike up a conversation. “Well, why not?”

There were six of them in total, 4 men and 2 women from the looks of it, and also because Eveline have been told. “Lass Eveline, was it?” one of the crew members attempted at a conversation; a young lad, could not possibly be more than 28 years old. “We must say – that really be some good and fine fighting. Sir Ivo said you must be more than what we can see!” Eveline hid a small blush as she looked up and decided to entertain and talk to the crew. After all, they let her in without a lot of questioning (save for that part before the pirates interrupted them), so perhaps it will be a bit more helpful to know them. As callous as it might be, however, Eveline was aware that at one point during her adventures, she might have forgotten about them; her brain can only store so many adventures even after all the best technology and magic that the Valentians have to give her. With all that said, Eveline is more than happy to live in the present as she always tried her best to. “Thank you, guys- I mean, lads and lasses. Sorry, my old accent is slipping out, hah! Anyway, all is well about what happened before, don’t worry about all of that!”

“I suppose we have not introduced ourselves yet. Arrrr, me name’s Davie! True or no, I shared the same life as you before I joined this crew. Don’t miss going back to those masses.”

“I’m Gwenna,” a young lady piped up, giving Eveline a double take as she wondered for a brief moment as to if she was calling her name, “Part of an o’ pirate crew. Don’t want to do it any longer, it’s a horrible life for me.”

“Zain,” another man said with a rather gruff voice, and with quite a physique to boot, “O’ Navy dog here. Framed by an officer, been on the run since. Joined the crew much later than these folks!”

“Antoine, my good lass,” spoke another man – looking at Eveline briefly before going back to look at his fallen comrades, “Heard of Sir Ivo and his crew making tales in a tavern and I figured I shall go with them.”

“Tores, as my crew called me. Was gonna get me head lopped off before, by chance, I got rescued by one of Sir Ivo’s crew members.”

“Which indeed be me, Julia!” the last lady said. From the looks alone, she seemed relatively older than Gwenna, and have went through a lot with Tores, for one. Still, Eveline is not going to overstep her boundaries and ask.

“It’s wonderful to meet you all!” Eveline said with a soft smile on her face, “I am Eveline, just to reaffirm that, haha! We all came from all sorts of places and paths of life, don’t we?” to which the six of them agree. “I’m… I’m also sorry about your crew.”

“Ahh, don’t be too disheartened,” Antoine replied back to her, “As tragic as these are, this be the price we pay for the promise of adventures and legends. Arr, provided the legends’re true. Else we be simply going on boat rides.”

“Who were the three that passed, if I may ask?”

“Josse, Liam, and Pedro,” Tores said, “One of them was a good lad and a friend to Antoine.”

“They‘ll all be missed,” Antoine reaffirmed, “They put up a good fight.”

“Right, I see. I’m sorry to hear about your losses,” Eveline paused for a moment before asking the more important question, “What were the rest of the crew doing down there?”

“Oh, you didn’t know?” Gwenna asked, surprised, “Ah, sorry! Not everyone are familiar with tales of the o’ sea! You heard of Sir Ivo talking about the Locker, ya? So… that is a tradi- traditi- ritual! A ritual that we have to do for those who perished in the sea. That, and the dead bodies on the boat is nee good.”

“Of course,” Eveline shrugged.

Just as then, Ivo and the rest of the crew emerged from the deck, each of them carrying a wooden coffin. With a swift order, the crew put each corpse in a coffin, respectfully crossing their arms and posturing them in a straight-up position. They were put into the coffins together with their personal artifacts – ranging from their weapons and outfits, to jewelry and trinkets. “They look graceful as they can be,” Sir Ivo said, “A rough life sailing the Nine o’ Seas.”

With more final touches, the nine coffins were ready to be floated into the water, according to Sir Ivo. “It will do, crew! They will allow no water to go in. Now, we be ready. Put them into the sea, and row back.” They did just that, and a few more minutes afterwards, Eveline saw the nine coffins floating in a group, in the waters at least 800 meters away from them. It seemed like the crew were going rather quickly to get away from the coffins. Eveline was about to question it, but held her tongue as she simple watched as to what happened next; it is still part of her adventures, after all. Ivo then took out a small book from his jacket’s pocket, and started reading out a small chant.

“Arrr, hear me – deities of Nine o’ Seas. Tis of great misfortune that these crew have perished on our own journey. Me crew Josse, Pedro, Liam, along with these 6 pirate seadogs, were the ones to have perished. Grant them the path to the afterlife, and may they be deserving of your judgment.” As Ivo closed the book, he then waited and looked at the coffins – then further away ¬– with his spyglass. “Keep rowing, men!” he shouted at the crew below the deck, his voice starting to get drowned out by the sea that was slowly getting rough with each passing second. Eveline was not going to question any elements of religion or mythology in this world, for she has already seen a lot.

The ship started getting rocked by the turbulent waves, the dark clouds looming and cutting off the clear skies and its star above. There were also loud thunders and rumblings all over the place, with Eveline thinking if she should stay under the deck, lest her armor becomes a lightning rod. As seconds passed by, the dark clouds have completely enveloped the skies, and in the distance, something was happening. “Look, Lass! Gwenna, pass her a spyglass,” Ivo shouted out against the storm as Eveline took it and looked at the coffins. Initially floating harmlessly on the waters, they were then circling around the vortex that was forming underneath them, “underwater tornado” as some of the Valentians and non-Valentians have called them. The vortex intensified with each passing tick of Eveline’s clocks on her suit of armor, followed by something much more spectacular – the vortex collapsed, leaving behind a large hole in the middle of the sea devoid of any water. The coffins, with no water to hold them afloat, also dropped like rocks following the event. “Their bodies shall hit the Locker!” Ivo remarked to Eveline, in awe herself as well.

A minute or two passed before the seahole closed back on itself, the water rushing back into the empty space and covering it up. As if on cue, the skies also cleared up, the thunders also slowly and gradually stopped, and it was back to the sunny albeit humid weather that Eveline has experienced in some countries and parts of Valentine Z right on the equator. For her, she was not as surprised because she has, after all, seen a lot of other worlds with such phenomenon. For the rest of the crew, however, it seemed like an every day thing for them, a ritual that they have to do for the crew and sailors in the “Nine o’ Seas”, as mentioned by many. “Arrr… take a break, me crew!” Ivo said.

The Dragons are flying high as they enter towards the tail end of the first group stage, having avenged their only loss thus far with a confident victory over Visayas Islands, who themselves are in a four way battle for the final two spots in the next group stage. The team has looked formidable at times and at other times they do have their nights where it is a bit of a struggle, though they have come out as the victors in two of those three occasions. To say that the team is playing as expected would be a bit of a misnomer as complete dominance in the first group stage might have been the call that the fans would have liked to see from the Dragons with their high ranking and seeming ascent back up towards the higher reaches of the basketballing world. Strong competition though was always going to present a bit of a challenge for the side, though they have overcome those challenges quite well even on the nights that they have not looked their best, especially coming away as three point victors in the trip to Aphrilia nearly a week ago. The seconds seeds currently hold the second place spot in the group and gave the Dragons a stiff test in their home arena unlike the thrashing the Vanorians put on them in Stormguard.

This past game saw what likely will be the last real challenge, on paper at least, for the Dragons and they came away with flying colors and a seventeen point victory away from the Empire at twenty-fifth ranked Britonisea, though they have done little to play up to their ranking sitting with just two wins. The near absence of any real defensive pressure might just be the issue there as the Dragons shot over seventy percent from the field en route to their hundred and one point breakout game, the first time the team has eclipsed the century mark this tournament. It was perhaps a vintage performance for those who preferred the way the team played before Odin Nagy took over as the head coach of the team, as it was an offensive delight from the opening tip off to the final buzzer. Malin Lien lead all scorers with twenty-four points as the guard went ten from twelve from the field and added a pair of assists in a quietly confident display from the back court. Malin Holm showcased her playmaking abilities with twelve credited assists from the point and added seven points as well with two steals to make the scoresheet look even better.

What has to be the most impressive factor for the team over the last several games has to be the improved play from the front court, which has throughout the years been the weakest point of the team. It was exactly that tendency to have weak forwards and centers that Odin Nagy went out and started looking for some of the taller and bulkier players who had been overlooked by previous regimes because they did not fit with the run and gun play style of the past, where the team seemingly lived and died by the three point shot. Though still undersized compared to their peers, center Aksel Bergh and Balder Hauge have added some bulk that was missing from the team and Bergh has really excelled with averaging nearly twelve rebounds a game in the tournament. Vanorians can be a bit stubborn at times and not want to see the way they enjoy the game either being played or being entertained by change but you can hardly argue against the results Nagy has been able to bring about with the team since introducing a few wrinkles to their game with some post play and more mid range options.

While four unranked teams are all that remain on the docket for the Dragons to attempt to take on and keep just the solitary loss to their name during the group stage, not a single one should be overlooked particularly Ophiuchus Region whom they will play in the next few days. Despite being unranked they have only three losses and are tied with Aphrilia for second in the group. It would be easy to look past them as they do have a few big losses, including a thirty-seven point loss when they hosted the Dragons, but they also have quite a few large wins as well, sitting perfectly net on their point differential as it stands four games from the end of the first stage. They are fighting for their playoff lives and the Dragons still need two wins to secure first place in the group, keeping both them and Aphrilia at arms length as they prepare for the next phase of the competition. While the starters likely are going to see some minor cuts to their playing time, don't expect it to suddenly disappear, as Nagy will want his best players still being in the right form as the more difficult second group stage comes about, something they will be able to secure by the numbers with a win in both of these next two games.

Four Weddings and a Funeral

PART 7 - ALMA-ADA - The Debate

The all-candidate debate, for better or worse, was next for our dear protagonist. With the debate held just a week before the byelection date, and a day before the advanced votes were set to happen, it wasn't one that most had anticipated to receive this much election. It's a downtown riding of a medium-sized city whose political and even social stature in the province was undersized relative to its economic growth, after all. Most all-candidate debates not in the nation's biggest cities would receive maybe few thousand people watching at the time of online telecast, and many of them weren't exactly living in the riding to start with...

...Which also made the QBC's decision to broadcast the all-candidate debate for the Bonneville Centre byelection, a first one they had done in five years, rather unique one. Of course, half of it was to do with the timing of it all - the snow-inflicted cancellation of the Wednesday Night Football between Saguenay Saints and Shelbourne Maroons out east had forced the headquarters back in Joongyeong to make a quick decision, before settling on what appeared to be a compromise move.

Both Bonneville Centre and College Junction-Atholstan, for what it's worth, were more similar than not. Both cities were relatively underrepresented in their province, had a cultic university that's centred around the region, and were agricultural in essence. They also featured familial/dynastic candidates as while Bonneville featured Alma-Ada, College Junction saw Kim Min-Woong, grandson to the former Deputy Prime Minister and longtime MP and even Premier of Saguenay Kim Doo-Joh, running for the Moogoongwha. But the difference here was that while College Junction-Atholstan saw DJ's Moogoongwha Party win 78 percent of the vote, Bonneville Centre was traditionally a competitive red-blue riding. And that's without mentioning the twenty-year Shinminjeon tenure it had on provincial level, which did not exist anymore, but certainly factored into the decision to nationally broadcast the occasion.

Now, the actual day of debate wasn't the easiest one for Alma-Ada. In the hours leading up to it, she had spent much of the time holding a 'Team Tree' picnic and speaking to the people on farmer's market. The schedule, while meant to be more leisured and relaxing than in the days before, was purposeful - Alma-Ada knew that she shouldn't be thinking too much about the debate, especially when not all the questions were going to be prepared.

Besides, it wasn't particularly as if her Moogoongwha opponent, a certain biotechbro named Vivek Hernandez, stood a great chance. Vivek, a 40-year-old conservative Shingoryeoite nationalist, wasn't a choice that the Prime Minister 'endorsed', so to speak. If Lucien Azagury-Zovaco, who was occupied with infrastructure bills out north this late into the year, had really cared about this byelection, he would have vetoed the selection on national level. But Lucien, who had already considered expelling about a half-dozen MPs for particularly concerning views, was a lot more concilitory man and decided to let the local EDAs handle both Bonneville and College Junction nominations.

The race for Vivek, an immigrant himself, started off smoothly, as he stayed within ten percent of Alma polling high thirties. On a riding like this, especially when factoring in a number of wealthier pockets, this meant a tossup in nutshell. But what Vivek didn't expect was that 1) he was running against the late Premier's daughter and the current Mayor's endorsee, and that 2) an whoopsie daisie can cost you long ways on a riding like this.

The sunday before the wednesday night's debate saw the highly-popular pop rock band X&Y come to the Bonneville Municipal Stadium for a night of concert. The concert, which was scheduled at a halfway mark between three days in Prince Eric and other two in Fort Lowe furthr east, wasn't meant to be a particularly memorable one for anybody. X&Y, who had just retired from recording albums after their 14th album, Signs and Shapes, came out two years ago, was mostly touring for the sake of touring. They had done a 40-city, 200-concert international tour last year to great fanfare, and were now holding an 8-month tour to go on hiatus for next four to five years.

What nobody had expected from this, however, was one of the embarrassing events in recent Quebecois political history. A kiss cam, ever customary feature for this group of 60-year-olds since they started performing in arenas and stadiums three decades ago, randomly flew around people's heads. It discriminately went back and forth between audience sections, mostly resulting in the fans waving back and giving each other a smooch (yes, even incestuous ones)...until it had reached Vivek and his blonde head of HR.

Their reaction, which was one of immediate hide-and-duck, was priceless. By the next morning, everybody had talked about their affair like it was their own. Speculations were raised, jokes were had and certainly many memes were shared around Twi.tur, Spacebook and especially Threddit pages as Vivek found himself publicly embarrassed. While Alma-Ada's campaign team had stayed away from commenting on it, mostly at the insistence of the party leader, it was the other parties especially the Shingoryeoite Liberals and the Greens whose largely stagnant form saw a slight momentum shift towards them.

Now, this wasn't going to threaten Alma-Ada's chances - if anything her decision to avoid commenting on another candidate's private life was important. If there's one thing she had remembered from training years ago, it was that taking full-blown attacks on personal lives of other candidates came with its own risk. There was a famous tale of the 2053 election when the Moogoongwha incumbent in Nogojiwanong took aim at her opponent's personal life, especially in terms of her child custody. The backlash from it, combined with coordinated response from national newspapers, exactly did the opposite as said incumbent would end up losing 25 to 55 percent in an unprecedented thrashing for the

But that has yet to follow up on the debate. Most of the debate itself, for better or worse, talked about cost of living, local issues they wanted to discuss and bring to Jeongdeokgoong once elected, and everything else. The host, a chamber of commerce chief with a name nobody had managed to find a way to pronounce correctly, had kept things tight and in line with the unexpected national broadcast - she too wanted not to be ousted.

Eventually the time would come for the question, however, as the free question period followed near the end. As with the format usually seen on the nationally-televised debate broadcasts, it involved one of five candidates each asking a question to another candidate. Alma-Ada, who was selected to ask her question the last, had already answered a couple of tricky questions about her plans to work with the Mayor, a longtime family friend, to start the campaign. Those were the questions she had anticipated already, and which she had crafted a response for.

Now, the bigger question, as she waited for the Liberal candidate to ask the next question, was to ask about the debate. Earlier she had responded against the advice of her campaign team to reply, mostly as that ran against the spirit of what Amos had done so. But everybody knew that if offered, it'd be a full punch that could be used to sink Vivek's chances for once and all.

Kieran Vassal sat in his office, alone, unnerved.

Back to back losses for The Brigadiers saw Group 1E be flipped completely on it's head. There was no long explanation for such a defeat, Aphrilia merely had been outplayed and there was no denying that. It stirred some worry inside of him, for reasons aplenty. One of those reasons was that it would be embarrassing if the world number eight bowed out of the tournament so early. This team was seen as a shoo-in for the second group stage, for a good run. Hell, they themselves thought that a deep run would be possible.

Throughout this team's entire existence, they've finished in the Round of 16. Again, again, and again. And while it was consistency, a thing that Aphrilians definitely liked to see from their athletes and teams, everyone knew that this team had the capability to go further. Beyond a Round of 16 finish, and originally, when the double group stage format was announced, he saw this as a chance for The Brigadiers to get that long-desired deep run. A chance for him to show that he and this team were not merely Round of 16 merchants.

But there was another reason for him wanting this team to make the second group stage. A more personal reason, safe to say. As Vassal sips from his cup of coffee, he re-opens the email sent to him. A direct message by the ABF themselves. He didn't believe it at first, but he quickly accepted the fact that it was real. A single sentence is used to begin the email.

"Kieran Vassal, we at the ABF will host an evaluation of your management by the end of the 42nd International Basketball Championship."

A fancy way for saying that he was slowly moving towards the chopping block.

It had happened some time back in one of Aphrilia's other national teams. Christopher Vermont's sacking from the national football team was a swift one, a sudden one. And to some, a rather deserved one. NAFA was cruel and tend to be extremely precise when it came to their decisions. But fortunately for Vassal, the ABF was slower and more methodical in the decisions they made. He would have time, but depending on how the team plays the rest of their matches, it may end up as either a lot or not enough.

"Seems like I'll be staying up all night." Vassal told himself. He would have to redesign the team's entire tactics again, especially now knowing that some things were hit and miss in the previous two matches. Everything needs to be on an upwards trajectory. Team performance, player motivation, match results... Perhaps he'd need to roll the dice.

Otherwise he may be out of a job soon.
"...I'll never trust the same, I'll see friendship as just another game...! Full of winners and losers, selfish abusers... You failed to fly but somehow I’m to blame...!?"

Part II

Project Wiki: Culture III

Cuisine

Cuisine - like architecture, fashion, etcetera - is highly dependent on locally available foods. What is thought of today as Ko-orenite cuisine is a product of many things: ingredients, preferences of influential and powerful people, notions on the importance of food and dining. For foreign perception, the prominence of southern and eastern foods in restaurants has perhaps been the largest factor in what's commonly thought of as Ko-orenite food.

Staple food in most of the archipelago comes down to (sweet) potatoes and similar crops, which are also used to make dough for baked and more portable dishes, and they are found all over the archipelago, minus the northeastern islands. Grains (including sorghum) were introduced to Ko-oren early and are ubiquitous as well in the form of bread, cake, and even noodles. Breadfruit is found along much of the coast and are a common snack or side dish on the eastern islands.

Protein comes from kelp, algae, lentils and legumes, sometimes in the form of tofu. Meat has been rare throughout most of history, with the southwest and north able to source some from game in the colder forests, and poultry in much of the southeast. For most of history, Ko-orenites ate meat up to about three times a week, with many communities remaining entirely vegetarian yet some towns developing a cuisine relying on some meat every day.

Vegetables and fruits form the most recognisable part of Ko-orenite cuisine, as healthy, portable options with strong tastes. Enjoyed raw, cooked, or wrapped into one of the staple foods or proteins, it's the sweet and sour backbone of the range of tastes. This is also where regional tastes differ:
- the eastern islands have access to a wide range of sweeter fruits: citrus, pineapples, etc.
- the southeastern peninsula's isolated agriculture specialised in spicy: hot peppers as well as spices such as cumin, nutmeg, pepper - obviously - cinnamon, etc.
- the rest of the nation imported food from those areas, and relied on mild, starchy, sweet: apples, pears, cherries etc, as well as legumes.

Growing food has been an important part of the process: it's not just about preparation. This, together with the abundance of foods that don't need much preparation, means that raw food was often seen as purer and more nutritious.

Games

Games have long been an important part of Ko-orenite culture with many functions: passing time with friends and family was one, of course, but educational games have been on the curriculum for centuries, and more elaborate games have been used to evaluate those that were running for public office under the meritocratic system. This has given rise to a sizeable industry known for complex board and card games with multiple viable strategies.

Wooden puzzles and tiles, glass marbles and markers, and a well-established paper and cardboard industry early on: components were easy to come by and easily improvised. Rules were codified early and available in libraries, and rules spread quickly from town to town, with regional conventions to agree on the 'best' rules for each game held frequently.

Educational games include skills like algebra, mathematics, and statistics, but also tried to approximate land and transport planning, annual agricultural cycles, and even weather pattern prediction. In addition, there was a large scene for making language and logic puzzles, which were also easily spread along trade routes. The source for most of these was in the west, both in the capitals, the city of Amahne, but also the trade network of the southwest.

Outdoor games are also a famously huge part of the Ko-orenite spirit, but they are covered by sports.

Part 9 – Intermission: How, even?

Chief Aviator Eveline Gwen Tracer Hepburn “Fate of Existence and the Omniverse” Ellen Trixie Caitlin Foxworthy Avril Verlene Celinda Sammy Doris T-Rev Oxton Arielle Lindall Leslie Vitesse Allison: Well, there is always this thing about unknowns, right? Maybe you don’t know their country, or you don’t know the basketball team that your team is playing against. However, this was- well, I don’t want to blame my team, first and foremost. Loves, I know how much and how hard they worked for this, and I feel bad for them as well. I am sure they thought it was going to be a relatively easy task. But due to some undivine luck and the universe that we are in, we lost to a team that, I am simply being honest, are second last in our group. How, I am not very sure, but I don’t want to reveal too much. I can say “anticipate” but you know what – I know about it all. We don’t know their team, their country, the roster, we literally don’t know anything about them. By we, I mean my team; like I said, I knew. But… I don’t believe I should tell them about it because hey, it might be a breach of rules. Anyway, all I can say is that this is a rare occurrence. I checked perhaps 20 trillion possibilities and this is one of the 137 where we lost. A really large odd for us, and we lost! Okay, Eveline, calm down… sigh. We still have post-qualifications to do. Perfect qualis, we can try once again.

[OOC: Do pardon the smaller RP; it's not because of the result, and moreso that I will unfortunately be busy with an event for the upcoming weekends.]

DROP IT DOWN!: The Stumbles

Postby TJUN-ia » Fri Aug 01, 2025 1:56 pm

Things are certainly starting to feel repetitive for the Hoops-Jaguars of TJUN-ia, and you can tell that this is starting to get frustrating.

For the third window in a row, this team started things off with an L - this time in Straton against Tumbra. You know, we thought having an unranked Tumbra in this group was a unique opportunity to take them down...only for Tumbra to tell us they were still Tumbra and beat us both home and away. The Red Wolves have been the surprise of the group, off the backs of their starting 5 - all fucking problems that those in Group Stage 2 will seriously have to deal with if they want to beat them.

Against Asukalia in New Washington, we did enough to get the win. Nothing more, nothing less. It was a 4-point win, 78-74, and that was all we needed. Not the best win, but it still counts as a win in the eyes of Margaret.

West Barack and East Obama away, Kalos reigion2 in New Washington.

The IUBC used to be one of the crowned jewels of domestic international sports competition, alongside the likes of the UICA/later turned IFCF and the Hockey Champions League. Dozens of nations submitted their best teams to the competition to battle it out to found out who had the best league and teams when it come to domestic basketball, and remarkably quite like in football and hockey the teams and league from the Empire were among the best in the world. While there were few IUBC trophies won by Vanorian outfits, the teams that did compete in the competiton often would advance deep into the editions, often being felled by regional rivals Equestria. It was a time when Equestria and Valanora had the best basketball leagues in the sport and that Banija had the best national team, where many of those players decided to play in the southwest of the region in either Equestria or the Empire. However like Equestria's sporting stature and Banija's standing in the IBC, the IUBC has diminished and has not been run in many many years, leaving many domestic leagues languishing without a proper challenge.

The Elven Basketball League, EBL for short, is among those that are languishing in the long interim between the editions of the tournament, with some many many years having passed since regular occurrence of the IUBC. For several years there have been flirtations that the IUBC was seeking representatives from the Empire to help facilitate long term stability of the competition and to bring it back off the ground, yet those never formally materialized into something concrete. While there was some tangents of truth to the idea, nothing ever concrete really was formalized between the powers that be within the IUBC and the members of the VSC who were interested in assisting the IUBC in getting back to a constant and elite level of competition. The former being seen as the biggest issue in helping facilitate the latter, as a lack of consistent tournaments has likely brought interest in the competition to what would be an all time low as it currently stands. Few enough domestic associations seem concerned about the apparent indefinite hiatus of the tournament, even if their leagues would be stronger for the competition having new life brought into it.

With over a decade without consistent IUBC competitions, the VSC has sensed an opportunity to do a bit of good and has reached out to finally make good on the previous rumors of their takeover of the IUBC. With such a long break since the tournament has run in full, the VSC is proposing starting with a clean slate for all and only updating the ranking system following the competition of the third tournament that would be run under their governance. It is clear that the VSC is not looking to become the full time stewards of the competition, as they have enough responsibilities already domestically and internationally that they take on in a year to year basis, they are looking to help get the competition at least back off the ground so that international domestic basketball once more could come to flourish. While the details are still being ironed about this potential stewardship of the competition, it has created quite a bit of excitement in the Empire that the there will be more than just a title to be contended for with each passing EBA season and that the tournament's return could help sharpen the players better for the IBC.

In the current IBX, the Calcuttas have secured passage to the next group stage and did so in emphatic fashion, absolutely putting Ophiuchus Region to the torch in Stormguard, as the Stormvale Arena was witness to one of the most clinical offensive games that the Dragons have played in some years. A hundred twenty points is an impressive output from the team, as well as the eighty-eight percent field goal percentage. However perhaps even more encouraging than a record setting night on the offensive side of the game was just how well the defense was able to play, not allowing the opponents to get a half court offense set up too often and forcing eighteen turnovers from the previous third placed team. The loss for them puts the team in a three way tie with Aphrilia and Visayas Islands at nine wins and five losses heading into the final two games. While the Calcuttas will be doing load management with their starters, don't expect the team to be giving up games despite that, as they are looking to battle for the best record in the first group stage, though Quebec and Shingoryeo currently lead that race having yet to taste defeat at all.

SECOND STAGE, HERE WE COME
Kebert Xela, Enqab Archipelago Laboratories and Iloilo City, Metropolitan District

The Blue Suns first travelled to the what could be a random laboratory, but it was actually a futuristic nation full of robots and some of the humans living here in the Archipelago Laboratories. "There's alot of robots here in this land than us!", says Escaño Jr. "But we came here to win and qualify to the next stage." "We don't care about the robots, we came here for the national team", says a fan alongside the barra brava of the national team. "We wanted to show the robots how humans can be better at basketball, and we invented it. Not them!" The Blue Suns were greeted by the robots and a human checking in for them in their hotel. And in the next day, they're preparing for their match against the robots from the Enqab Archipelago Laboratories in a basketball-specific court to train and keep up with the robots of the national team. "We've seen some of the robots' skills when they visited us.", says Ortega. "And now, we are still doing it to win against them." As they arrive in the Reuahzloh Dome, the robots chanted some of the themes of "robots taking the whole world to troll the team, but the barra bravas hit them back with some of their songs and chants prepared against them. And the battle begins in the first half with some of the barra bravas occupying the human seats to cheer on the basketballing Blue Suns and have some banter on the robot fans. In the first tip, Diarra went on over against the tall robot same height as him, passes onto Nobuhara which a robot who guarded him but passes quickly to Belmonte to shoot the first points for the Visayans. The barra brava were happy, and went on to hit back at the robotic fans with their songs. The Visayans went on to dominate against the Enqab robots who went on to respond some of their plays against them. But the Visayans finally learned their lesson against them and went on to take them out in the second half. With some shots from Darian Ebana, the substitute, Nobuhara again, and Akil Abdulwahid, in his first cap for the national team and won against them, 70-75. "Kudos to the robots playing against us. They pulled up a fight against us.", says Ortega. "But I hope we could win against the Ophiuchuiis in the Palacio Nacional." The Blue Suns of basketball have celebrated with some of reggaeton and some merengue and J- and KPop to add it on and one of the songs was "Heavy Rotation", sung by the Japanese group AKB48, which they sang along to as part of their tradition as a victory song. Then they came back to Iloilo City to face against Ophiuchus Region. Then trained in the Royal Institute gymnasium and some plans were handed out to the national team as a way to face the Ophiuchuiis. There are alot of the Visayan fans, including the barra brava, to watch their national team qualify to Quebec and Shingoryeo. The Ophiuchuiis said that 'they're confident' to win against the Blue Suns, but not this time as the Visayans have learned their mistakes from their first game against them with some improvement from Nobuhara, Galarza, and Diarra. The Visayan wave never stopped even though the Ophiuchuiis tried to stop it but not as far enough with their subs from their game against Enqab Archipelago Laboratories. Abdulwahid went on to stop over the Ophiuchuiis defense with some dunks from Diarra and shots from Ebana. And then the celebration came after the match when the fans went on to invade the court to celebrate their entry to the 2nd stage in Quebec and Shingoryeo. The victory hymn sounded through the speakers of the Palacio Nacional and after some songs, chants, and dances to add it up. Diarra, Ebana, Arcena, and Nobuhara went on to dance some of their chants in court and in the locker room. "We have already did the impossible.", says Ortega. " But I hope our journey to Quebec and Shingoryeo will be memorable, win or lose. This competition will be fun whatever the result." The Blue Suns will go to Jolbonopolis to face Abanhfleft first before Valanora, Kytler Peninsulae, Drawkland, and Valanora. Will they actually win their first ever title, or only to get humiliated?

"True power in the Federal Parliament doesn't just come from votes [...] True Straton influence comes from committees."

It's not a surprise that the Federal Parliament, more than once, has been referred to as a "sausage-making factory" by many of its alumni. Most Tumbrans' cursory interest in the actual goings-on in governance begins and ends at Question Time in the House of Representatives, where at noon every Wednesday the Prime Minister goes up against the Leader of the Opposition and other party leaders to answer questions aimed to embarrass. Prime Minister's Questions is political theatre at its best and worst; President Sébastien Leclerc of Kyrast has gone on record saying that he is grateful that he does not need to "go into that dreadful pit and be pelted with abuse and be attempted to be embarrassed by everyone else."

But that's about it for the public-facing segment of Federal Parliament goings-on. Outside of PMQs and Budget statements, TBC Parliament barely gets 500 viewers per day. The Senate, the upper house which is only half as adversarial as the House of Representatives, gets even less attention. Most MPs' and Senators' first contact with their constituents come from constituency surgeries and town halls; outside of social studies classes, few pay attention to the actual lawmaking process.

"It is, at once, the real reason why you're in Parliament and also the most exhausting process to partake in," said former MP for Lairnhill East, Sam Weiss. "I don't think there's any other way to describe it." On paper, the process is simple enough; a law needs to proceed through both the House and Senate, survive three readings and a committee process to become law. But the committee process is where bills truly live or die, and is where true influence in the halls of the Federal Parliament is flexed. In a parliamentary system, the influence of committees is not as great as, say, under a presidential system; but the committees system still has a great deal of influence.

Most of the committees map fairly neatly onto the nineteen federal Ministries — the Committee of the House and Committee of the Senate question the Cabinet Office on their activities — while some are merged. The House has separate committees for Energy and the Environment, despite it being one ministry on the federal level; the Senate merges the two into one. Committee assignments are also determined by the Committee of the House, and the Committee of the Senate.

The process begins soon after an election, where the Leader of the House and Shadow Leader of the House get together and nominate members in proportion to the just-finished election results. For the 2041 election, the 35-member Committee of the House comprised 17 Labour MPs, 12 People's Party MPs, 2 from the Moderates, and one each from the Alliance, Northern Democrats, Republicans, and Social Democrats. It is in this meeting that overall proportions for the other Committees are set, while overall committee assignments for individual MPs are settled within individual party rooms. It is generally accepted that the largest party in Parliament gets to nominate the chairman of each committee.

In the committees, legislation is considered and Parliament truly gets to oversee the activities of the nineteen ministries. The most power, however, is held by the chairman of the committee; who are often long-serving backbenchers. They hold the unique ability to kill Bills that they don't want to give a Third Reading on the floor of either chamber of Parliament. The most famous committee chairman is Jon Bennett, an MP from Pesvern who served from 1947 to 1996 and who served as Chairman of the House Budget Committee from 1980 to 1992. In that time, he gained a reputation for directing more federal funds to Pesvern — often referred to as 'pork' — than before or since. Bennett also killed more Labour bills as Ranking Member (the highest-ranking member of the second largest party) in his final term in office from 1992 to 1996.

Backbenchers are often feared by members of their own party for this reason, and is another, unofficial way, that the government is kept in check.

State funeral of Kabaka Mwanga, at the Stadium of the Restoration

The stadium was packed to the absolute brim. The last time people had seen this for an international broadcast, it had been host to the World Cup 99 Final- a moment of glory where Audioslavia, against all odds, were able to earn their third star. And now, the stadium was filled to the brim once again, but this time, for a much more somber occasion- the state funeral of Kabaka Mwanga. People from all stripes were here, from around the world. Many foreign delegations, including a fair number of heads of states. The entire Lukiiko, all living Katikkiros, religious leaders, leaders of business and what not, and naturally, some just regular civilians as well. The largest funeral undertaking in Banija since, well, the funeral of his Father.

The state funeral for the monarch was always an interesting conglomeration of things. It was, at all times, an affair of faith, of state, and of tribe- a unique blend of protocols that must be followed, even if the burial itself, which would take place right outside Herzegovina City, was more of a private affair. And so, as an affair of state, a lot of people processed in. Honestly, it was slimmed down from what it could have been- the Banijans had originally wanted each member of the Lukiiko to process in. And with 600 elected members of the body, well, nobody had time for that.

The funeral was, as always, conducted by the Patriarch of Herzegovina. The Banijans who processed in were the elected party leaders, as well as the living former Katikkiros who chose to attend. Then, from the faith, it was three bishops, plus the Patriarch of Herzegovina, who processed in. And then, after that, it would be various members of the Banijan royal family, as well as the leaders of the present foreign delegations- and their spouses. And then, lastly, the pallbearers would process in with the Kabaka. Six pallbearers. Traditionally, the heir would serve as a pallbearer, but at 6 years old, Kabaka Sekakama was far too young. In his will, Kabaka Mwanga had designated his six living grandsons as his pallbearers. Those were Omugabes Ssemanda, Kato, Muhoozi, Akiiki, Lallo, and Ousman.

They walked in with the casket, and put it on the stage. Per tradition, it was a closed casket. After the singing of a somber entrance hymn from a local choir, it was Kabaka Sekakama, despite him being just 6 years old, who would take the next part. He, his twin sister Omugaba Zalika, his great uncle Omugabe Ttembo(second son of the late Kabaka), and Omukama Immaculate, all walked up to the stage with a big Banijan flag. Each holding one corner, they draped the flag over his coffin- another Banijan tradition at the burial of a head of state. Then, the four went to sit down.

It was the Patriarch of Herzegovina who gave the funeral sermon on the day. It was a typical sermon- focusing on the life of Kabaka Mwanga, his accomplishments as Banija's head of state, and his impact on not only the nation at-large, but on his family and the people in his life. As the head of the Banijan Mormon Church, he also spoke in very religious- Christian religious themes about life and death, and how Kabaka Mwanga pursued a religious life for himself. He spoke about how Banijans could turn to God in these troubled times, and how Banija's strong friendships should be nurtured in this day and age.

After the sermon, more music was played, and a few more members of the royal family gave testimonials about the Kabaka. In particular, his two living children, Omugabe Ttembo and Omukama Immaculate, spoke about the Kabaka, as well as Mwanga's brother, Omugabe Basamula, the now former Omulangira of Herzegovina. The Omukama's speech was the final speech- and in her speech, she called out each of the leaders of the foreign delegations by name, thanked them for coming, and they all got a large round of applause from the Banijan filled crowd.

After the speeches were over, the final procession began. The pallbearers grabbed the coffin, and marched out of the stadium. But this time, in front of them were two people- Omukama Immaculate and Kabaka Sekakama. The latter was on the throne, while Immaculate, due to Sekakama's age, was actually the person running the show. They marched out of the stadium, and loaded the coffin onto the royal hearse. This hearse, guided of course by the royal guard, was taken to Gonzaga International Airport(which was otherwise closed that day), and then loaded on the plane.

That was, indeed, the public part of the funeral. The body would be interred at the Kasubi Tombs, right on the edge of Herzegovina City, where all Banijan monarchs, and their spouses, were interred- and that, per usual, was simply a family affair.

DROP IT DOWN!: Time For A Reset!

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Aug 03, 2025 3:28 pm

Two more games left in the First Group Stage for the Battin' Jaguars of TJUN-ia, and we just wanted to get these out of the way. We all knew we were going to finish this group stage in 4th place - not the best campaign, but at least we knew we would go on the plane to Quebec and Shingoryeo no matter what. With that in mind, let us see how the send-off went.

The final road game was against West Barack and East Obama and unlike the battle in Riverside, this return mission wasn't exactly close from a competitive perspective. Our preparations for the battles to come meant that WBEO, unfortunately, had to be swept aside and we did exactly that. 74-60 it finished, a convincing performance that we absolutely needed.

The final game at home would be against Kalos reigion2 in a matchup that was all about one thing: seeing if the Liberty Arena in The Gardens of New Washington could overhaul the 2-2 record that the Jaguars had managed in Riverside. That was on the line in this one and because of that, we performed excellently - doing the job in a 90-74 triumpth to secure a 3-1 record in the NAU and a 11-5 record overall.

SCHEDULE (Group 1D)
MD1: vs Foxterre (UR) - Unity Centre, Riverside W 74-62 (1-0)
MD2: @Drawkland (6) W 64-60 (2nd/2-0)

MD18: vs Kalos reigion2 (UR) - Liberty Arena in The Gardens, New Washington W 90-74 (4th/11-5)

Thankfully for us, none of this matters when it comes to Group Stage 2, as our ranking pre-IBC decided the pots for the draw - meaning we were ranked ahead of Cardenao, who won the group. They certainly have grievances at that, and I do not blame them, but the show must go on. We will start this new 5-team group with Ophiuchus...and hosts Quebec. Yikes.
GO HOOPS-JAGS!

Successor: Keridwen I
Born: November 8 1923

Died: April 16 1994

Karadog VI (November 8 1923 – April 16 1994) was King of Warkus from 1945 to 1955. He is also known as ‘Karadog the Savior’, ‘Karadog the Traitor’ and ‘Karadog the Unwise’. Karadog is most well known for his role in the constitutional crisis that took place during the 1950 Saifiri Riots.

Karadog was born in Dinas Wen and was the eldest son of King Siôr III. He was considered to be somewhat unambitious and unmotivated during his childhood as he often attempted to avoid studying and formal events whenever he could. He did not get along with his younger sister Keridwen, who excelled academically and was popular within the wider family and among the public. He reportedly felt quite isolated during his formative years and believed that his position as the heir apparent made it impossible for him to form genuine connections with others. He did find some solace in his passion for music and Karadog was known as something of a virtuoso, albeit one that often frustrated his tutors when he failed to practice consistently and tended to start learning a different instrument whenever it became apparent that he couldn’t improve without regular practice.

Karadog frustrated the court and the government by refusing to marry, even after he became King after his father’s passing in 1945. It is not entirely clear why Karadog refused to marry, as he gave conflicting reasons to his friends and family. He told his father that he wanted to wait for the right person, his mother that he was gay, his sister that he was asexual, his eldest cousin that he never got over his first love and Prif Weinidog (First Minister – the head of government in Warkus) Alec Balfour that he did not believe in marriage as an institution. Karadog never married throughout his life and there exist no credible reports of him entering into a relationship with anyone at any point, possibly supporting the asexuality thesis.

The 1950 Saifiri Riots saw the Saifiri Isles of Warkus descend into violence and mass looting after Plaid Cyfiawnder Brenhinol (Royal Justice Party) Prif Weinidog Alec Balfour instructed national police to break up pro-independence protests. This occurred because Balfour believed that the local Saifiri police were ‘too soft’ and unwilling to police their neighbours and friends even when they were engaging in what Balfour called ‘treasonous conduct’. The national police were ultimately unsuccessful as they were undermanned and felt disempowered by the popular negative sentiment against them in the area. Balfour then decided to call upon the army to get the riots under control ‘by any means necessary’, which led to the infamous Monday Massacre in Dún na Gréine where twenty civilians and one police officer were killed over the course of a Monday night where the army raided several homes and harassed locals.

Karadog was largely uninterested in these events, but his sister and his other relatives urged him to intervene, appealing to his desire to be liked by others and telling him that he would be viewed as a hero for stopping Balfour. The legal specifics of the Dove Guardianship were largely unclear at this time and this was an unprecedented event. There was no clear mechanism by which the King could intervene and it was also contested whether this counted as a significant military operation because it concerned a domestic issue and did not involve aggressing upon another country. What the royal family did have, however, was its own military force that was largely separate from the other branches of the military and sworn to support the King over the rest of the government. This was known as the Lluoedd Amddiffyn Brenhinol (LAB) or Royal Defence Forces.

He ultimately elected to pursue the most extreme option suggested to him, even though several members of the court, including his sister, counselled against it. Karadog secretly ordered the LAB to capture Balfour dead or alive and, when they managed to capture him two days later, he made a televised appearance where he branded Balfour a traitor and announced he was using the Dove Guardianship to dissolve the Senedd. Balfour was privately executed after the appearance. Only a few short hours later, Karadog was strongly advised by his council to offer himself up for arrest to avoid the outbreak of civil war. He obliged and what followed was a five year inquest into the events that transpired, which resulted in a lengthy report where Karadog was admonished for being ‘unwise’ and ‘unprudent’ but acknowledged that he ‘acted in good faith’ and was could not be charged with any offence. He decided to abdicate at the inquest’s conclusion, having grown deeply uncomfortable with the level of scrutiny he received from the public and the world more generally. He also grew to distrust his friends and family who he felt had undermined him and shifted blame onto him during the inquest. These events also resulted in the creation of the Royal Desecrecy Act, which required house Protheroe to make their private documents and transcripts available to the public, with some exceptions. More significantly, the inquest led to the abolishment of the LAB and massive reforms which made the institution of the Dove Guardianship and its powers clearer.

After his abdication in 1955, Karadog was granted the right to adopt a new, unknown identity as ‘John McNamara’. Not much is known about his life after abdication, other than that he died on April 16 1994 in Dún na Gréine. His death was announced by his sister, now Queen Keridwen I, three months later. Karadog's legacy is mixed, with many considering him a good but flawed person and a poor leader. He is generally disliked by right-wing Warkusians who see him as ungrateful and foolish for not supporting a leader who was doing what was necessary to keep the peace, while he is also not popular among the left who are critical of what they see as his abuse of executive power. That being said, there are some people, especially pro-unification figures and Saifiri nationalists (who rarely agree on much), who believe that he did what needed to be done.

For the first time since the tragedy of Kytlair Flight 134, the Kytlerian Prime Minister Alice Mulholland-Pearce has crossed the Blood Sea herself, for the funeral of the late Banijan monarch Kabaka Mwanga.

But this would not be her only diplomatic business in Arrosia. Obviously, the numerous high-level political figures gathered for this occasion created a obvious opportunity to meet and discuss more conventional political concerns - which for Mulholland-Pearce involved the aftermath of Flight 134 and its investigation. While pilot error in response to erroneous instrument readings was seen as the most direct cause, the investigation team - which Mulholland-Pearce has made almost too much of a point of detaching herself from, out of fear of political interference perceptions on a crash that involved what is ultimately a state-owned airline - turned much of their attention towards the context of the busy Blood Sea corridor, and in particular the crowding during the overnight window. Notably, the pitot tube damage that led to the tragic chain of subsequent events was sparked by a lightning strike from a storm cell that the pilots attempted to fly over rather than around, given their existing high flight level and the lateral diversion risking interference with southbound flights; as such, high-level discussions (pun not intended) we're now taking place around Blood Sea routing and the viability of spreading redeye flights out further into the night with the associated late-night noise under the flight paths. The current "soft curfew" at Zube International Airport - where flights cannot be scheduled to depart or arrive overnight, with delayed flights able to operate in this window only if they avoid the crosswind runway 03/21 that lies immediately north of the Zube suburb of Qizin and is sometimes the only usable runway during Komodo Channel windstorms - is seen as a key bottleneck in this regard, but there would likely need to be either a new fourth runway at Zube or expansion of another, less strategically positioned airport to work around this restriction.

But in lighter territory, Mulholland-Pearce also has a new Kytlerian sporting success story to be attached to. The debutant basketball team have made it to the neutral-site stage of the International Basketball Championships in Quebec and Shingoryeo, with a striking 12-4 record in home-and-home preliminary play and two of those defeats being competitive battles with world-leading Valentine Z, and Mulholland-Pearce will attend their opening Group D clash with Drawkland. That group is being played entirely in Jolbonopolis - coincidentally headquarters of plane manufacturer Bruenig, whose lobbyists are believed to be set to visit Mulholland-Pearce in the hope of breaking Kytlair's longstanding association with rival Avro. Any opportunity available, and all that - a motto which could just as well apply to the team, for whom just being here is a result and a half but whose lack of expectations has done nothing to slow them down yet.

Besides, even an upset win will be going some to even be the most shocking Kytlerian defeat of Drawkland...

OFFICIAL MEMO
From: Luka Casales, Director of League Development and President of the International Basketball Championship
To: Mihaly
Subject: Official Recommendation for Final Basketball Team

Mihaly,

After completing my review for the final two cities, Capo Capatori and the Treasure Valley, under consideration for a professional basketball team in the upcoming, yet to be named professional league, I am writing to submit my final, formal recommendation for your consideration. Please note that this was not an easy decision, and I did my due diligence on both Capo Capatori and the Treasure Valley.

Both cities and their respective regions offer compelling stories, beautiful backdrops, and it was especially touching to see how excited each prospective fanbase is about potentially having a home team in their city. However, as Director of League Development and President of the International Basketball Championship, it is my duty to build a league that embodies the spirit of Cardenao. Ultimately, this League is meant to usher in a new generation of talented Cardenaoan children; while only a few will reach the League, the dream will inspire them throughout their life as it does all these years after I first touched a ball.

Reflecting on this has led me to the conclusion that, in line with these founding ethos, there is only one reasonable conclusion: I recommend that the final professional basketball team be awarded to the Treasure Valley. I must stress that this was not an easy decision, and I would like to explain what led me to this decision.

While Capo Capatori has fantastic infrastructure, access to global funding, and an impressive digital presence, it fails to produce a singular quality that is abundant in the fabric of the Treasure Valley; basketball. There are few things to look forward to in Eastern Cardenao, fewer still when you’re as far east as the Treasure Valley is, but it was abundantly clear that they bleed basketball. You can see it in makeshift hoops on the streets or above garages, you can watch it in the many games of pickup ball around the community, you can feel it in the eyes of little boys and girls watching through a fence at their dad, or their mom, their hero out there hooping with their friends.

Despite a lack of high-grade facilities, the youth leagues and high school team regularly compete against, and beat, teams from places like New Cardonia, Sareña, and Alexandria; they punch above their weight, imagine what they and the rest of the region could achieve with a dedicated professional team and the funding that comes with that.

On that particular line of thought, it is fair to assert that the majority of modern opportunity in Cardenao exists in Western Cardenao; it is, comparatively speaking, a paradise in terms of climate and geography, the vast majority of our biggest cities and financial hubs exist in the western portion of our country, but that doesn’t mean Western Cardenao is the entirety of our country. Prior to my recommendation, only one of the initial eight teams would be based in Eastern Cardenao; I don’t believe that to be meaningful representation, instead it’s token service at best.

This team isn’t just for the Treasure Valley, it’s for the entire eastern corridor. Long depressed economically, long fighting against the odds despite the rich culture of the area, in many ways the Treasure Valley is the embodiment of our selection criteria. This represents a meaningful opportunity to provide a vehicle for growth for the Treasure Valley, Eastern Cardenao, and, ultimately, all of Cardenao.

On the matter of Capo Capatori, well it’s also proven to be an ideal candidate for a team of their own so let me be clear, in my role as Director of League Development, Capo Capatori will have a team too, and soon. As previously mentioned, the Capo Capatori is defining what it means to be a modern Cardenaoan city, they are too future-ready and economically powerful to not be a part of this league. However, while they have resources, corporate partners, the essence of soul is considerably less detectable than in the Treasure Valley.

I’ve been wined and dined by Capi Capatori’s most influential and I’ve sat on bales of hay next to a cracked court with beautiful mountains as the backdrop, in those moments it was clear where the final team should be located. As we consider the future, and the story, of our nation, it seems obvious that we should build our league on stories like this. What could be more Cardenaoan than this? A scrappy mountain town that puts heart over height, going up against a sleek, futuristic cityscape? Getting a team that changes an entire region, for the better, instead of being a minor jewel in the Capo Capatori portfolio, lets it shine in the Treasure Valley. Plus they have Triceratops, how cool is that!

With deep respect and appreciation at the opportunity to serve, I formally nominate the Treasure Valley to receive the final professional basketball team.

Luka Casales
Director of League Development
President of the International Basketball Championship

It was a good letter, well-reasoned to the point Mihaly couldn’t really disagree with any of his points—that didn’t matter though. Things were in motion, grand things, that dwarfed Lula Casales and his opinion on what should be done.

No, Capo Capatori would be getting the final team, end of discussion. Well, maybe not the end of the discussion, Luka had won back some of his respect so maybe a courtesy call to let him know would be worth it.

Either way, nothing happened in Cardenao happened without Mihaly’s approval.

How much longer could that last?

Fourteen wins on the bounce after the unexpected upset away to Visayas Islands had the Dragons flying high indeed, rolling their way to the group stage title and the second best record in all of the first group stage and the second best point differential as well, both behind only soon to be second group stage (and knockout round) hosts Quebec and Shingoryeo. There was no looking past the final two games for Odin Nagy and his team, they focused on finishing out the group with the intent of only allowing that upset trip early in the group stage be their only blemish. New Eastern Canada and Riandera both were overwhelmed by the passing game of the team from the Empire and those high possession shots turning into buckets allowed them to set up into their smothering half court press defense that kept both of their opponents under seventy points. In international competition, any time you could keep an opponent under seventy points, your chances of winning increased significant and showcased that you had one of the better if not elite level of defenses playing the game.

The Dragons arrive now in Quebec looking to turn around some poor history that the side has had in the past when it has come to the two group stage format, as both times that it has been used in the past with a team from the Empire participating, it went poorly for the Dragons. The first being in Delaclava where after a tremendous first group stage showing, the team completely lost their stride in the second group stage and failed to advance into the knockouts proper. That same sort of event happened the second time as well, a thoroughly dominant first group stage performance before losing their touch and scoring ability to fall short of making it out of the second group stage. It is not a format that is seen as very favorable back in the Empire and there are already some doubts about having to play through it again during this tournament, though you can only play the hand you are dealt. If the Dragons are truly championship level material, then they are going to have to overcome their distaste for the format and the bad history they have had with it, rising to the occasion and finishing in the top two to make it through to the knockout stages.

That might be easier said than done however with the difficult group that the Vanorian team has been drawn with, getting sixth ranked and sport rival Drawkland as the second seeds in the group. Drawkland's natural physical advantage had long helped the Sonnel team both at the NSCAA and IBC level have a cutting and clear edge over Vanorian teams, their sheer size makes it a tough matchup regardless. Trying to get off high percentage shots or clean passing things is difficult with their height and wingspan, getting rebounds even more so. To beat Drawkland you have to play a near perfect game and hope that their own ego helps beat themselves, their raw belief that they are simply better than you and can bully you into defeat, let them lull themselves into overconfidence and then capitalize on those mistakes. Yet sixteen ranked Abanhfleft also lurks in the wings, as well as a third tilt with Visayas Islands, who will likely hope to replicate their matchday 3 victory from their place against the Dragons for a surprising second scalp of our third ranked side. Not too much there is also The Kytler Peninsulae who have earned their way here despite being unranked and have shown a proficiency to overcome long odds across multiple domains.

Banija

The Royal Family had made its way to Banija after it was confirmed that there was to be a public funeral and that foreign dignitaries were being invited to come pay their respects. The Empress decided to only bring a small security detachment with her and had basically put the government on hold while she and the rest of the family were away on what was essentially state business. Thankfully the Senate was not currently in session, enjoying one of their vacation periods and any small matters of import could be handled by some of her advisers and appointees left behind in the Empire. They had arrived before much of the rest of the dignitaries that were set to make their way to the southwest of Arrosia for the funeral, allowing Prince Aerion to interact with the soon to be new king and their twin sister, the three being around the same age. Lathwen hoped that they would strike up a good friendship, even if Aerion would outlive the new king and it would be centuries if not thousands of years before he would ascend to the throne to replace her. Good relations with the neighbors was never a bad thing.

The day of the actual funeral was a bit awkward for the royal family, enduring some strange funeral customs that Banija had. However it took much of her willpower to not gather Faeron and Aerion and leave the proceedings early when the Patriarch started preaching to the assembled crowd. She did not understand these sort of customs or why so many of human faiths found it to be the right time and place to try to proselytize at a time of celebrating a loved ones life. Then again, the elves funerals were very different, with more than half of them being cremation rather than burial, with the belief that cremation would get them closer to gray havens than having their bones rotting in the ground. Nonetheless she bit her tongue and waited for it all to end, enduring the awful preaching in the name of good relations with their long time ally knowing that the Lathwen that had originally ascended to the throne would not have had the patience or the foresight to have come to the funeral or not to make a scene because she disagreed with their customs and beliefs.

Four Weddings and a Funeral

PART 8 - ALMA-ADA - The Blow

Then like that, a KO punch was thrown to Vivek Hernandez's campaign. A simple question asked at the tail-end of the nationally-televised all-candidate debate, by a candidate who realistically stood very little chance at the end of the day no less, was more than enough to sink Vivek's campaign.

The question she asked, after all, was a fairly straightforward one. Janet Springfield, being a 40-year old businessowner in the heart of Downtown, knew what she was facing against. And it wasn't that of a winning chance - she knew that there was a frontrunner in the race, a candidate whose reputation took a hit from almost every group three days ago, and her and a CIS candidate whose name she couldn't remember.

So she took a chance with it, and ran at that. Vivek, who had looked confident for most of the campaign until the event, and even on the trail between the events, froze on the screen for three seconds. It wasn't particularly a long stoppage, but when you did it on the national television, there was going to be a very good chance your polling's going to tank in any way possible. It's not about whether it would, but by how many points and to what extent now.

And the polling data by national pollsters suggested anything but surprise there. A more moderate one by Gaegyeong Research suggested a relatively modest twelve percent gap between Alma-Ada and Vivek, but that was to be expected. What was more interesting, however, was on Loranger, as a relatively middle-of-the-mill polling firm announced a shocking margin that most had not imagined:

Polling Incumbent Moogoongwha Liberal Shinminjeon CIS Greens Communists
Gaegyeong Research 新民線 38.50% 10.00% 45.00% 5.50% N/A 1.00%
Loranger 新民線 22.50% 22.50% 49.00% 5.00% N/A 1.00%

Pretty damning, no matter the MOE.

In any case, Alma-Ada carried on with her campaign. Perhaps blessed by the fact she wasn't the one to criticise, the rest of her campaign went on as planned, as she continued to gain momentum. With about a week left, most of the experiences that she had needed for campaigning, not just now but also for the federal election in two years' time, she had already gained. Many hands were shaken, schools visited and spoken engagements had. The rest of it is just harvesting the crops, settling the pitches, and mowing the ground for the next harvest season.

As for those around her, Isidore and their kids seemed to be getting along fine back home. Being a figure who abhorred attention, who partly chose to stay a househusband because of it, Isidore was having slight issues getting used to the pomp and circumstance of campaign. Their two children, Evan and Ava, also didn't help the matter. Even as they were back in Prince Eric, some hours away to northwest, they were starting to become familiar with the attention that they would get outside or even on school, simply due to their mother's run at what was becoming a metasized-byelection campaign. Multiply that by five times, and boom, that was the level of attention Alma-Ada and her two younger siblings would get in those days.

So for Isidore and Alma-Ada, it was natural for her family to move back to Bonneville until after the election. With the November election meaning that their children only needed one more month of autumn semester before the winter break, it made perfect sense for them to move to Bonneville to time it with the weeklong break most of those present in the Jeongdeokgoong would take. At least she knew that unlike the first time she left home for Lakeland College, she was coming back for good.

Part III

Project Wiki: Culture IV

Literature, Stories, Mythology

As a nation with a long written tradition, Ko-oren has a rich literary landscape. There is some continuity between poetry and performing arts on one side and music on the other that also bridges into stories and literature. Music helped to set stories to a meter, developing poetry, and making stories easier to remember. That said, while performing arts are the domain of satire, ethics, and comedy, poetry has long been the domain of emotion in general with frequent forays into the nostalgic, while mythology and stories were often mnemonic devices and loosely functioned as moral compasses - and navigational compasses at the same time. Mythology connected people to their location, a start in a long, enduring tradition where location and its natural history are seen as highly important features of people, settlements, and innovations. It paints a picture of a culture that sees people and happenings as guided by the times, conditions, and systems they operate in: nature and climate provide backdrops and stimuli, people together create the culture and the systems that guide and limit change. In that assumption, connecting people to the environment reveals something about directions to take, decisions to make, and so on.

It's difficult to set the development of these arts to a timeline: there is evidence for satirical plays in town centres as early as the House of Amahne and frequent shows as early as the foundation of the University of Razahne. At the same time, early poetry must be at least as old with its distinct function, and mythology and stories were frequently called back to, meaning that those stories must have been common knowledge at the time.

Examples of early poets and authors include Hnjauthen (Amahne, romantic poetry), Ghwithen (Amahne, mythology of the bay and the south), Marluraudin (Capitals, mythology of Razahne), and Ninehithen (southwest, travel stories).

In the centuries after that, bards travelled from place to place, but within a certain region or boundary, to spread and collect local folklore about local places. Their collected works across their career form flowing stories that, to this day, can be used to journey from one town to another just by landscape features alone. These bards place fantastical animals, natural spirits, and personified flora in these lands, still a source of local pride, festivals, and folklore. Some names connected to regions: Pyurill and Fyojara (west coast), Gogilethen, Jethsakhogun, Klorhaten (southwest), Wenuthen, Dhiwigun, Otihzothen, Mowohaten, Tudhmaneden (south), Vohdadhen, Arahjeden, Zihruten, Fatomin, Bavaumin, Zhebaigun, Tizaitin (southeast), Gjaten, Njoaden, Kjeazan, Ngjaidhen (bay), and Urjinau, Orjigwela, Dasinen, Goviden, Rikjakjau, Voniten, Gargwagun, and Videgau (north). Each have routes and roads named after the places they described.

Around a millennium ago, refound appreciation for old writings combined with a favourable economic situation opened up the seas to the Ko-orenites, now also adding the seas and oceans to their repertoire. Mythology made way for stories of human emotions. Some five centuries ago, poetry comes to the forefront once more, with an educated middle class adding to the national corpus daily, and the works of Ngeghin, Zwoukun, Daidhen, Ohwoposhen, Ekezhiden, Ducaizhun, Panongun, Gothnikhuden, Kipibazagun, Cyarlerra, Kamirra, Darjusheju, Nekjishejuvan, and Autenau still part of the curriculum to this day.

Foreign story forms such as novels made their way to Ko-oren some four centuries ago. It took a while for Ko-orenite authors to adopt the format, but Shohsothen, Igafeden, Hwoazan, and Fwaiden had modest success.

Busukuma

Being President could be lonely, sometimes.

David Hardcastle watched the post-funeral reception, slowly munching on some mandazi. They were called that, anyway, but in his mind they were really just like any other fried dough product. A small dip in the raspberry jam, and another crunch. His wife, Emma, was flitting between the different dignitaries — he last saw her speaking to Baker Parker Prime Minister Rebecca Schoenlein — while he stood, looking at the rest of the guests. It was being hosted by the new Waziri, Omugabe Ttembo, but so far the President hadn't been able to get a word in sideways. It was probably better this way; he didn't much feel like diplomacy at the moment.

The funeral of Mwanga — who had become somewhat of a figure for gentle ribbing on Tumbran late night television in his later years, who was always somehow doing the improbable for the multitude of Banijan sports teams — had made Hardcastle consider his own mortality. When he became President, he was 74; when he left office, he would be an octogenarian. Quietly, he remembered a few sketches, but they were all mostly the same. Mwanga had hobbled onto the pitch during a World Cup final and hit the game-winning penalty. Mwanga, who could barely hold up a baseball bat, somehow hitting a ball out of the park. Mwanga hitting a game-winning three-point buzzer beater from the halfway line despite the fact that he probably couldn't jump. They produced laughter, as was the gentle lampooning of Banijan teams constantly doing the impossible, but there was also a begrudging sense of respect for the old man, if only for surviving that long.

But seeing an entire stadium gathered together in prayer reminded him that it all came to an end, someday. And for him, at 80, it was probably coming sooner rather than later. But, as was the republican tradition, there would be no stadium of the faithful; there would be a week of his coffin lying in the lobby of the Federal Parliament, and then he would be cremated. There would be op-eds, there would be works written on his legacy (moreso as a Government minister rather than a President, whose first job was to be invisible until needed), and then there would be the inevitable biography. There probably wasn't much interesting to biograph, but one would be written nonetheless.

The delegation was small — the Government couldn't spare many of its ministers, and all three of Prime Minister Sandra Campbell, Deputy Prime Minister Jacob Christiansen, and Minister for Foreign Affairs Claire Barker were out campaigning for the man they hoped would be his successor, Campbell's immediate successor Bertram Andrews. In their place had been the almost apologetic Minister of State for Arrosia, Lucas Kimetto, and the Second Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jayden Green. Between the two of them, they had handled the diplomacy; and essentially told the President to essentially enjoy, as much as possible, his final overseas visit.

Another dip of the mandazi into the raspberry jam. It probably wasn't good for his health — his doctor was probably going to be apoplectic — but he'd long since made up his mind. One day, they were all going to end up like Mwanga, royal or not, president or peasant; and time on this world was meant to be enjoyed.

And if it meant enjoying some fried dough, why not?

The Kytlerians had made it to Jolbonopolis. It was an emotional journey - one the team deliberately made from Cobden rather than Zube, just so it wasn't the same origin as the ill-fated soccer team's routing - and it was perhaps unsurprising to see them looking out of their depth in their opening game out in Arrosia, especially as it was against giants of the game both literally and figuratively in the form of Drawkland's Net Corps. Every single one of their players was taller than Magnus Eriksson. Four of the starting five had a matchup with a Kytlerian standing over 30cm shorter. "These players aren't human!" is the immediate reaction when seeing the Net Corps, and it turns out that it is in fact technically accurate. "They look like they're from another planet!" Accurate again.

The foundation behind the Kytlerian success story - one of several among unranked teams this cycle, three of whom won at least 12 games in home-and-home play - has been their athletic ability allowing them to get open. Turns out that when you have an entire team of intergalactic Absolute Units against you, there's no such thing as open. 244cm guard - not a typo - Ruth Cookson scored 13 points before the Kytlerians had managed even one, and with the help of some comically easy alley-oops to 254cm centre (again, not a typo) Terri Blackwood, the Net Corps rushed out to a 28-3 lead. It genuinely looked like the most unfair thing you could imagine in the sporting multiverse.

But if they really had that much of an unfair advantage, they would have been a dynastic force in the sport. And, at one point, they were! Unfortunately, that point was over a dozen cycles ago, winning IBC 25 and IBC 28 and reaching at least the last four in five straight cycles ending with a dramatic overtime loss to Banija in IBC 29. That is still their last appearance in the final four. People joke about the Base Corps and 10-3, but failing to win so much as an IBC quarterfinal when your smallest players are the size of everyone else's largest is at least seven times more of an anti-flex. Something, presumably, has to be up with them.

On this evidence, that something is endurance. The Net Corps flagged badly as the first half wore on, even as they went to their bench (which occasionally meant adding even more height). The heavily-rotated Kytlerians found their way into some kind of space, got open shots, and made them at a reasonable clip - helped by multiple goaltending calls against interior defenders who committed the sin of reaching their arms upwards as Kytlerian shots were reaching the basket. Turns out that there is, in fact, such a thing as "too tall" even in this slani sport. The deficit at the half was a comparatively modest 40-28, and while the Net Corps appeared to have resumed normal service with an early 10-2 run to start the second stanza, a flurry of funky hook shots from Vic Charles helped sow the seeds of doubt in the Sonnel side. As scary as they looked as front runners, they were suddenly looking increasingly vulnerable to the Kytlerian late surge; as the giants spluttered, their human opponents hit the twin turbo with 11 unanswered points to leave the score at 67-63 with 54.9 seconds remaining. From nowhere, a procession had become an epic, the Kytlerians able to dream of this trip being a truly special week.

Blackwood got an open dunk (there was a defender under the basket but there may as well not have been) to extend the lead to six. An Ace Lee three made it a one-possession game for the first time since the 34th second of what had only just regained the title of being A Contest. Another attempt at feeding Blackwood for a dunk went horribly wrong as Cookson made a rare distribution error, flinging the ball over where even Greenwood could get it, and Bakaji Bigombe fired off a shot from the corner that was ruled a three to tie the game with 5.9 seconds remaining. The Net Corps didn't have a timeout, but the review to check that "BB-8" was behind the line when firing the shot off with eight seconds left meant they had a chance to talk things over. One more chance. They went the length of the court with Silvia Irving, who had Cayden Sovanna as an outlet underneath to unleash a buzzer-beater from some way behind the arc... that found nothing but net. The Net Corps blew a 25-point lead, but a 28-foot three meant none of that mattered; they won, the Kytlerians lost, and that's how the records will show it.

To say there was a story beyond that would be selling it short.

Archivists and Historians
by Otto Jarvis

‘Historian’ is a bit of a dirty word in Warkus. Academic historians are instead known as ‘archivists’ and calling someone a historian is tantamount to calling them a psuedohistorian. Explaining why requires me to delve into some, well, history.

The many royal houses throughout the history of Warkus, especially the biggest and wealthiest, cared immensely about their history and legacy. This included both the individuals who belonged to these houses and the houses themselves as institutions. It was important for them to patronise intellectuals and scholars to build and propagate a positive narrative about where they came from and what they had achieved. The leaders of powerful houses also knew that history was more than narratives and self-serving propaganda. Knowing history, the real history, gives you power. Warkusian lords faced a kind of dilemma: either they could hire scholars to invent believable stories about their house’s important connections to various parts of the country, Warkusian mythology and so on or, instead, they could hire scholars to genuinely study history, record present events and provide useful, accurate information about historical events.

Smaller houses had to choose between the two, but the most powerful houses did not. They would employ two groups of scholars: historians and archivists. Historians were responsible for writing about history and recording details of current events with an eye to protecting their employer’s interests and following their instructions. They were often expected to write lengthy books to be consumed by lords from other houses and other intellectuals. Archivists, on the other hand, were expected to write accurate reports of historical and current events, even if these reports undermined certain politically useful narratives or made their employer look bad. The works of archivists were carefully guarded and were expected to be written in a very dry, curt style. They were absolutely not to be shared among outsiders. Being a historian was generally considered more prestigious than being an archivist as archivists were often treated as ‘less intellectual’ and ‘less literary’. This was partly deliberate because the houses of Warkus did not want to undermine their official historical narratives by celebrating archivists.

The advent of the scientific revolution and the emergence of the Senedd led to the terminal decline of the historian profession in Warkus. Historians went from being viewed as important scholars and masterful storytellers to mere mythmakers and propaganda artists. Archivists, on the other hand, began to be celebrated for their role in preserving (for the most part) the real history of Warkus.

Things are admittedly more complicated than I’ve presented them here. The line between historian and archivist was sometimes blurry and there are some cases where works written by house historians are more accurate or insightful than works produced by archivists. The short and sharp writings of archivists can be a slog to read and occasionally omit useful pieces of information that historians wrote about. But the archivist-historian distinction in Warkus is why Warkusian historians might get offended if you call them historians.
