Thomas Hall was already in the building. The Head coach of a national team gridiron outfit being the first person to arrive at the facility was not something that was rare. But he had done something interesting- he had asked Kadesh Odika, Zamandi Ayana, and his OC, Kopo Bogadi, to arrive at the facility 30 minutes early, for a meeting. Well, technically, if we were to be correct, he delayed the start of the workday by 30 minutes for everybody else. Not something you generally do before a knockout stage, especially against an opponent as vexing and as talented as the Ko-oren Dragonflies, but this was something that he had thought long and hard about.
When Thomas Hall had landed in Busukuma, and had gone to sleep, he knew that he had a lot to think about. The Banijans loved to spread it out, a high-flying attack- and usually, the offense was powerful enough, and the team talented enough, where everybody was able to eat. The HBs would get their yards, the QB would get his, and he woudl get it to the WRs- who would all be able to get their touches and yards. When you had offenses that could regularly go through a group stage averaging 35+ per game, it was one of those nice facts of life- for the majority of the tournament, nobody really had to sacrifice. Not everybody could ball out every week, obviously, but there was plenty of offensive production to go around.
This cycle, however, the Banijan offense wasn't quite on that level. World Bowls 47 and 49, they led the group stages in scoring. This time, they finished with just a hair over 30 points per game- good enough for fifth in scoring. And even more alarmingly, allowed over 21 points per game- basically a middle of the pack defense, at best. The winning combination for Banija, for years, had been simple. Does defense win championships? Yes. And despite reputations, Banija's defense was normally pretty good. Never, like, truly elite- it's been many years since the defense was on the level of the current Krauts D, or the Dragonflies D. But combine good, or even pretty good, defense, with an all-time offense? That was a championship combination. Top 10 scoring D, top 3 scoring O- and they were competing for titles every year. That was a combination that was a huge reason why they had been to 6 straight WB Quarterfinals, and the semifinals in 5 of the past 6 World Bowls- including 4 trips to the Final over that span, with two world titles.
That was why this group stage was a worrying one, to fans and to players. The 2-5 record on the road, of course, was worrying- but a little less so, maybe, with the team co-hosting the tournament. The offense had been pretty damn good- scoring over 30 a game was nothing to sneeze at. But, certainly, far away from the great Banijan offenses of the past. Scoring only 7 points against Katzeburg? Not scoring on their overtime possesion against Darmen? They had shown flashes, certainly- poor Devonta, conceding 68 in Banija. But the offense had mostly just been 'good', not really touching their potential, and that was because of their maddening inconsistencies. The defense, meanwhile, had been flat-out mediocre- at best. "Giving up 50 in a game, in any game, even against someone as good as Sarai Gwenderyn- well, there's a lot of shit that we've gotta fix." Thomas Hall had told reporters after Banija's traumatic visit to Chromatika.
And about the only thing the Banijans had going for them is that they were playing at home. Ko-oren was on fire- having won 9 games in a row, with their defense turning back the clock and looking like the very best in the multiverse. Look at these scores.
Week 6: Ko-oren 40–7 Equestria
Week 7: Barnettsville 0–29 Ko-oren
Week 8: Terefuxe 0–3 Ko-oren
Week 9: Ranoria 3–7 Ko-oren
Week 10: Ko-oren 40–10 HUElavia
Week 11: New Rotterdam City 0–33 Ko-oren
Week 12: Ko-oren 30–6 Of the Golden Harp
Week 13: Equestria 9–31 Ko-oren
Week 14: Ko-oren 24–10 Barnettsville
9 wins in a row. Most points allow over that time span was 10 points- with 3 shutouts. Allowing a near impossible 5 points per game. Thomas Hall hadn't slept. As soon as he landed, he got the All-22 of Ko-oren's week 9 victory in Ranoria- and had been treated to a defensive showcase. The two best defenses in the competition- now that was how defense was meant to be played. And Thomas Hall had been up, all night. He needed his defense to rise to that level. And, maybe even more importantly, he needed to figure out how his offense was gonna score. Ko-oren could score- maybe not at will, but they put up 30+ in 5 of those 9 games. Piers Masman could play. Last year, when they played in this stage, Ko-oren wasn't quite as good as the Ko-oren of old- and Banija's offense was able to simply overpower them, en route to a 34-18 blowout victory.
There was very few, if any, weaknesses at all in that defense. One of, if not the singular, best coached and most disciplined units in the tournament. So the Banijans best chance? Show them an offense that they didn't have on film. Obviously, you couldn't write a new playbook in a week. So they needed something else. And Thomas Hall, not sleeping at all, had put together a gameplan. And called his three leaders, on the offensive side of the ball- the QB, the HB, and the OC- to ensure that this would happen.
"Thank you guys for coming in today, for this meeting." Thomas Hall started when they got to his office. None of the three knew why they were here- not yet, anyways. "Alright, I wanted to talk about our plan for the Ko-oren matchup. As we know- they're balling, like crazy." And he whipped out a stat sheet that he had an intern whip up. It showed Ko-oren's defensive statistics over the last 9 weeks- how they were either #1 or #2 in basically every single category. "This is a defense that, when you look at it, looks so insane- they have no weaknesses, basically anywhere. What are we gonna do? We're gonna flip the script- we're playing ball control." They all looked at him, mildly surprised. The Banijans, of course, were capable of a long drive- but the downfield passing attack was too strong to really play the time of possesion game.
"It's our defense that's going to have to win us this game." It was a mark of the trust, and the pedigree, that Thomas Hall had built over 11 cycles as a HC that the people in front of him, all on offense, didn't even flinch when he said that- it wasn't an insult, just a statement that they took as gospel. "We're going to go under center more today, than probably you have ever gone, Kadesh, in your career- at least, your pro and your college career. I haven't had a chance to watch your Cass Tech tape." They all laughed- Cass Tech, of course, was the Banijan HS that basically was the strongest HS gridiron program in the country- and of course, Odika's alma mater.
"Zamandi." He looked straight at his HB. "I know you're 33. But we're going to be putting this game on your shoulders. Okombo's also going to get carries, and Duhaga will get a few as well. But in an ideal world, we're running the ball 35-45 times." They all looked at him, shocked. The Banijans hadn't ran the ball that many times in a game, especially a KO game, since.... Well, ever? Certainly not in the Thomas Hall era. A decently risky strategy, as well- despite Ayana still being elite at 33, the offensive line wasn't quite what it once was. Could they dominate the line of scrimmage like that? "Those CBs are ridiculous- we've got to beat them on the ground. We can go heavy, and smoke the hell out of them."
"Kadesh." He looked straight at his QB. "I'm gonna need your full, complete buy-in towards this plan. I know, an odd one- a rare time you're not at the center of the offense. You're a team leader, you're in your 2nd straight cycle as the starting QB. Can I count on you to get buy-in? And not only yours- our WRs are going to have to be blocking, like crazy, all game. I need you to get them on board. They'll all do it, yes- but this doesn't work without the inner core belief. Do you guys have faith?" All three nodded. "Good." Thomas Hall paused, and then looked at his OC. "Alright- you're going to be running all the offensive stuff this week. Today, just practice those interior runs. You and I will work this week to get stuff implemented into the playbook."
"Wait, what?" His OC replied. "What are you gonna be doing?"
"Oh, I'll be at the meeting telling the team the plan." Thomas Hall said. "But I'm gonna be running all the defensive stuff. Our defense is ranked 18th in scoring! The Busoga Islands put up 40+ on us. Busoga! Nah, I gotta do Marc's job for him." Marc, of course, was the defensive coordinator.
"Are you firing him?" Kadesh asked.
"Mid tournament? Not a chance!" Thomas Hall said. "But- I'm gonna be doing his job." The DC would be basically demoted to an observer for the rest of the tournament- Thomas Hall would be completely hands-on. If they wanted to make a run, they needed to make serious changes- and this would be when the team found out if they were ready for the big time.

Banija earns physical 23-7 victory over Ko-oren to move onto the World Bowl L Quarterfinals
BUSUKUMA, NATIONAL CAPITOL REGION- "I told my team- we needed to change things up if we wanted to get anything done at this tournament." Thomas Hall said after the Ko-oren game. "The group stages have not gone how we wanted- and the fact that South Newlandia, instead of us, finishing the top of the Isaka Jawara group, of all things- that disgusted me personally. We couldn't even honor our own legend properly enough to win the group." He had paused, and then continued. "But- the tournament isn't over until they send us home. And we had time for a reset. One we had earned, by the way- despite all the struggles, we still finished 9-5. We still beat everybody in our group once. So we did what was necessary- and now, we're in the Quarterfinals."
It was, in fact, probably the least Banijan game you've seen in a long time. Now, on one hand, that's what happens when you play Ko-oren- there is no team better in the multiverse at simply making you play their game. That doesn't mean you always win- but you've got to adjust to the rules of engagement as they set the terms, not as you want to set the terms. But Banija's 322 yards of total offense all came hard-earned. 207 yards on the ground, with only 115 yards for Odika and the passing offense through the air. The time of possession, won by Banija in a major way- 37:44 to 22:16. And, lastly, the turnover battle won decisively by the victorious co-hosts- forcing three turnovers off of Piers Tasman, while the vaunted Dragonflies defense couldn't force any. It took a lot to get a 23-7 win over a Ko-orenite team that had allowd 5 points per game over their last 9 contests, so let's dive into how that happened.
First, let's talk about the game's opening drive. We received the ball to start the game. 3 plays- punt. Two Ayana runs for four yards, and then an incomplete pass on third down from Odika. The Dragonflies got the ball at their own 27 yard line, and then from there- they went haywire. That opening game script was a thing of gold. 9 plays, 73 yards, just moving the ball seemingly at will down the football field. And it ended in paydirt- with Piers Masman throwing an 11 yard TD pass to Giles Costigan at the end of the opening drive. A great start for the Dragonflies- an early 7-0 lead, when they didn't even get the ball to start the game. Exactly how they wanted to start. And a terror for Banija- you never want to trail against teams with a defense as suffocating as theirs.
But, while it took some time, the Banijan offense finally got going- not only their second series, but on their third series of the game. It, unfortunately, coincided with a brutally unfortunate injury from the Dragonflies- with key DL Mablw yTaddwadd spraining his ankle after being rolled up on, and losing him for the entirety of the game. The Banijan offense's plan, from that point, was to run the ball- and it featured heavy doses of Zamandi Ayana. They had moderate success on that third series, getting a couple of first downs, before Kijeera, their kicker who has had an up and down career with the NT, drilled one from 53 yards. 7-3 Ko-oren, and that was how the first quarter ended.
The second quarter was turning into a punt-a-thon- the type of game where, with this scoreline, Ko-oren is quite comfortable. Teams repeatedly going 3 & out. Their defense holding up, while ours, after the first drive, was also playing well. But sometimes, it's about more than playing well- it's about making game-changing plays. And that's exactly what the Banijans intended to do. A 2nd down play saw Masman flushed out of the pocket by Ashenafi, and running for his life, tried to squeeze it into a tight window to find his star WR, Giles Costigan. But the throw simply wasn't there- picked off by Munanire Tembo, returned to the Ko-oren 34 yard line. The crowd exploded, momentum all in favor of Banija, and most importantly- a short field against arguably the best defense in the game(the Krauts, of course, certainly have an argument in that direction).
6 plays later, the Banijan offense was faced with a serious choice. Having gained 22 yards after that pick, they had a 4th & 1, from the Ko-oren 12. Do you kick- or do you go?
Banijan Commentator wrote:It's fourth down and a yard for the Banijan offense, from the Ko-oren 12 yard line. The crowd's chanting go- and it looks like the offense is staying on the field! A risky call, a gutsy call- btu the right move. Thomas Hall has always been one to trust his gut, and trust his players- and he wants to ensure that the payoff from that pick is 6 points, not 3. And even more importantly, he doesn't want to continue trailing- you go into the half down against these guys, and you're in deep, deep trouble. Anyways, the Banijans come out- and are under center, again. Have you ever seen a Banijan team under center this much? Maybe not since World Bowl XL?
Anyways. Fourth & 1. THey've got three TEs on the field, Ayana as the deep back, and Kasozi Batte is the only WR on the field- split out wide left. They're going heavy. It's a halfback toss to Ayana, who's gone left- and look at that hole! He's got a first down and... THAT'S 6! What a way to finish the run- he plowed over Ko-orenite SS Herewijn Slotmoerbei at the goal line, falling into the end zone for a touchdown. The veteran is looking straight at the SS, pointing at him, and flexing. He's gonna get 15 yards for that, but he doesn't care- what a strong run for the score!
PAT was good, 10-7. And that was the score at the half. Ko-oren took the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the kickoff, and with good field position, put themselves into FG range at the end of the half- but the 54 yard kick was wide right. A little bit of skill, a little bit of luck- and the Banijans took a slim lead into the half.
The third quarter, well, was more of the same. The Banijan offense was playing effective keepaway- churning the clock. But the defense, truly, was on fire. "It was, quite easily, the best defensive performance of the tournament." Said one analyst. At least, of course, since the second half of their week 2 game against Chromatika- when they kept Gwenderyn off the scoreboard for the entire second half. The offense added a FG, as well. But in a game that was risking turning into another punt-a-thon, it was the Banijan secondary, once again, who would break this game wide open.
Banijan Commentator wrote:It's 3rd & 11 for the Dragonflies, from their own 28 yard line. They are running the silent count- the 100,000+ are making a TON of noise here in the nation's capitol. The Banijans hold a slim, 13-7 lead. Masman is in the gun- two WRs right, and two more lined up left. The snap is sent, and Banijans are flying around the edge- it's a blitz! There's one more rusher than blocker, and the pocket is quickly collapsing around Masman. He throws, off his back foot, and it sails over the head of Séverin Longtin.. AND IT'S PICKED OFF BY ISRAEL AERO! A DIVING INTERCEPTION BY ISRAEL AERO, WHO GETS UP AND IS IMMEDIATELY TACKLED! OH WOW, WHAT A PLAY- FIRST AND 10 FOR THE SERPENT EAGLES!
It was another huge interception. The real way to beat an elite defense? The answer, is short field. Cause turnovers and create chaos- make it impossible for them to play. The Banijans still had some work to do, but any drive where you are starting plus territory is a plus. The drive took 8 plays- and Ayana had 6 carries for 39 yards on the drive. The other two plays? Okombo had a run for 7 yards, and Odika had an incomplete pass. But when, even with 12 minutes left, Ayana was running into the end zone for his second TD of the day- that made the score 20-7, that put Ko-oren with their back against the wall. It didn't help the Dragonflies that they immediately went three & out. Masman, rattled by his two interceptions, missed maybe a golden opportunity to put points on the board- their speedster, Woza Donjoutein, had beaten his man deep, but Masman, under pressure basically all game besides the opening drive, had forced one underneath to Costigan instead- that fell to the turf for an incomplete pass.
The Banijan running game, really going now, was able to churn off a 6 minute drive. While they couldn't finish the Dragonflies off with a TD, a short FG was enough to essentially put a bow on it. 23-7, Ko-oren down 16, they needed to go out 5 wide, and pray for a miracle. They had a pretty solid drive, getting into the red zone for the first time since the game's opening drive- only for a strip sackl, and recovery, by the Serpent Eagles defense, to end Ko-oren's World Bowl.
"Today, we played with pride." Said Israel Aero, the team's starting free safety. "This defense, rightly, has been under withering criticism for this tournament, especially in high pressure situations. We know that we needed to do better- and coach challenged us to do better. He told us that we're gonna have to make the plays to win the game today, and we did exactly that. The world will know- we can ball too."
Now, they've got a whole new challenge on their hands. The defending champs are coming to Istria. Cardenao are not only the world champions, but they are a combined 4-0 against the Serpent Eagles in the last 2 cycles- so this is personal. "They've put us through absolute hell these last couple of years." Zamandi Ayana told reporters. "This is one we've got circled on our calendar. They beat us for a world title last time, and now they want to stunt on us in our own country as well? We're gonna be fucking ready."
