The match did not get off to an auspicious start for the Sarzonian national gridball team.

On Sarzonia's first offensive play from scrimmage in the team's 23-0 victory over East Lithuania, quarterback Cameron Stallworth was hit in the helmet as he slid after a 23-yard run. He was taken to the blue medical tent to be evaluated for a concussion. Quarterback Cal Barkley then took over the signal-calling duties as Stallworth was ruled out of the match despite clearing concussion protocols.

"We felt like we needed to play it safe," manager Tyler Paige said of the decision to keep Barkley in the contest despite Stallworth passing concussion protocols. "Besides that, we wanted to see Barkley in match conditions."

Barkley played decently, completing 19-of-31 passes for 234 yards and a 66-yard touchdown to Matt Largent. However, Stars offensive coordinator Trent Beaucamp took out the design runs Stallworth typically got. Barkley ran just three times for eight yards, though two of those rushing attempts were kneel-downs in victory formation.

"I missed a couple of reads," Barkley said of his performance. "Just timing. I wasn't in there most of the time, so it takes a little getting used to the starters."

East Lithuania adopted eight-man defensive fronts and walked up a safety in order to contain running back Ty'Relle Clinton and seemingly dare Barkley to beat them. They contained Clinton, who ran 31 times for 86 yards, but the Stars defence held East Lithuania to just 174 yards of total offence and forced four turnovers.

"I was pleased with our defensive effort," Paige said. "We're not used to allowing 19 points against a team ranked as much lower than us as Natkr, so we had to step it up a bit."

Sarzonia will play a home match to unranked Quirhoshe before an important away match to 11th ranked Valanora. The Stars are level with the Sabres and TJUN-ia's Jaguars for top in the Gavin Davis Group table at 9-2. The top four teams in each group qualify for the knockout rounds, which the Stars have all but accomplished, but Paige said the team would first have to concentrate on their job against Quirhoshe.

"We can't afford to get ahead of ourselves or allow ourselves another letdown like we did after the TJUN-ia match," Paige said. "No matter what happens against Valanora when we play them, we still have to play Rouyoute at Joe Gibbs Stadium and we can't take that one for granted."

"We're running out of room for poor performances," Barkley said. "If I'm starting against Quirhoshe or if Cam gets back, we're still going to need to get after it."

[OOC: Stallworth will be cleared to start the Valanora match. Barkley starts against QUirhoshe.]

History of the World Bowl (part 6)

Postby Drawkland » Fri Feb 28, 2025 2:08 pm

In honor of the 50th edition, I'm doing a "brief" history of the World Bowl. We'll be going era-by-era, and once this series concludes I'll be adding this information to the (currently bare bones) NSS Wiki article for the World Bowl. Enjoy, and if you have any input or feedback, let me know.

The spread of champions held by the World Bowl is certainly unique among the "American" sports tournaments. Look no further than the title counts by this point, over 30 editions into the tournament. There were still only two "true" dynasties looking at championships won. Only two nations had even won three titles regardless of how long it took to earn them. For comparison, both the IBC and WBC had SIX nations with at least three titles by their 33rd edition, plus the World Cup of Hockey had four. Not only that, but the 6-title mark set by the Allamunnic States was the most major titles won by any nation until Valanora won their 7th WCoH title in the 51st edition of that tournament. No tournament has had this many one-and-dones in this amount of history ... but that was about to change.
6 titles - Allamunnic States
3 titles - Dancougar
2 titles - Sarzonia, Delaclava, Qazox, Cassadaigua
1 title - Rennidan, Arroza, Fujisawan Territories, Tocrowkia, Bluth Corporation, F1 Insanity, Civil Citizenry, German Zerabithea, Saintland, Ko-oren, Schottia, Anglatia, Drawkland, Abanhfleft, Alpine Union, Kaboomlandia

Old Faces Return
After some frankly sparse editions of the tournament, it felt like new life was being breathed into the World Bowl. This six-tournament run of consecutive first-time champions was the longest since the seven-cycle streak between World Bowls VII and XIII. This trend couldn't remain forever, though. A new generation of consistent contenders was starting to emerge, and some older contenders from previous generations were returning to the fold as well.

Banija missed the previous two cycles after a streak of three consecutive fourth-place finishes, but they returned to host World Bowl XXXIV. The tournament got back up to 48 entrants, the classic 8 groups of 6 format leading to a Round of 16. The pattern of parity continued for this cycle. Two teams went undefeated, that being 10-0 Free Republics with only 19 points allowed the entire group stage, and 8-win 2-tie Allamunnic States. Drawkland and Greater Vakolicci Haven both went 9-1. Though Taeshan was the only 8-2 group winner, Cosumar and Pridnestrovia also went 8-2 to land second in their groups. It's not out of the ordinary for the worst group winner to have a few second-place teams better than them, but 7-3 Kaboomlandia would've been seeded #13 behind 7-3 Newmanistan, Royal Kingdom of Quebec, and Alpine Union if not for winning their group. Even so, Kaboomlandia survived 13-10 in overtime against Cosumar to avoid a first-round upset. The same could not be said for Allamunnic States, Drawkland, and Abanhfleft, the three biggest teams to fall in the first round. Through the first few rounds, Newmanistan was a bigger story. After returning in WB XXXI, Newmanistan had finally returned to the playoffs, and managed a pair of upsets to make it the semifinals. Free Republics remained the biggest contenders into the semis, and with the lower-seeded competitors of Taeshan, Pridnestrovia, and Newmanistan remaining, it seemed like the Republicans were set to capture their first title. Instead, they suffered a wild 7-17 upset at the hands of Taeshan, while Newmanistan outlasted Pridnestrovia 6-0 thanks to the boot of Michael Krizman. This set up a title matchup between Taeshan and Newmanistan, a championship which would make more sense in the Jolt Era than WB XXXIV. Both long-suffering teams had a chance to finally capture their first title ... but it was the Fightin' Falcons who won 17-7 to crush the hearts of an entirely new generation of Rockets fans. Though Taeshan's win continued the streak of first-time champions, WB XXXIV was the beginning of a turnaround for the World Bowl as a whole. It was also Taeshan's first gridiron title since the GFWC, before the World Bowl was founded.

Newmanistan's return to World Bowl relevance continued as they hosted World Bowl XXXV. For the 42-nation field, Newmanistan opted for 7 groups of 6 going into a Round of 16, another 10-game group stage. No teams went undefeated this time, with only Allamunnic States and Main Nation Ministry managing 9-1 finishes. Both of these were a bit of a surprise. The Regulars are the most notable team in World Bowl history at this point, but they hadn't made a big splash in years. Main Nation Ministry, despite being ranked outside of the top 20, captured the #2 seed in the playoffs in a group containing Drawkland. Even though the group winners contained recent contenders like Kaboomlandia and Alpine Union, the bottom half of the bracket was filled with landmines like 7-3 Drawkland, Taeshan, Abanhfleft, and Ko-oren. In fact, all four of those group runners-up authored first-round playoff upsets against some of the pretenders in the top half. A few of these nations even survived into the semifinals, the most exciting matchup being the 31-27 Drawkian victory over Abanhfleft. Allamunnic States once again suffered an early playoff round loss, falling to Free Republics in a 10-0 defensive battle. With Taeshan beating Kaboomlandia in a field goal fest, the only unexpected newcomer making the semifinals was the aforementioned Main Nation Ministry. This set up a rematch between Main Nation Ministry and Drawkland, as the Ministry had beaten Drawkland twice in the group stage, 40-10 and 7-0. They say it's nearly impossible to beat the same team three times in one season, and that proved to be the case in this semifinal. Drawkland got revenge at the perfect time, winning 20-14 to secure their second championship game appearance. Meanwhile, Taeshan beat Free Republics 7-6 in the other semifinal to make it to their third consecutive final. This was the first time since Allamunnic States's legendary four-cycle run that a team had made three straight finals, and only the third time in World Bowl history that a defending champion returned to the championship game. Both competitors were looking for their second title. This time, Drawkland came out on top, winning their second championship with a 21-16 score thanks to their defense denying Taeshan in the red zone multiple times. For the first time in twelve cycles, a nation had won a second title. The seven-cycle streak of first-time winners was finally broken.

Nearly half of the World Bowl's history at the time had passed since their World Bowl XIX debut when Ko-oren hosted the tournament for the first time in World Bowl XXXVI. They held the same 42-nation format that Newmanistan ran the previous cycle. This group stage may have only had one undefeated team, that being 10-0 Pridnestrovia having their best cycle to date, but most of the teams qualifying for the playoffs were the usual suspects for the mid-30s. Cosumar put up a 9-1 group stage, and several nations including Main Nation Ministry, Ko-oren, Taeshan, Free Republics, Newmanistan, Drawkland, and Abanhfleft all went 8-2. Drawkland and Abanhfleft in particular was an interesting case. Ranoria, in their return to the tournament, actually held the group lead at 7-2 going into the final matchday with head-to-head leads over Drawkland and Abanhfleft. On the final matchday, Abanhfleft beat Ranoria and Drawkland won their game to flip the group table, giving Drawkland the #6 seed and dropping Ranoria to #16, the last team to make the playoffs. Unfortunately for them, Ranoria was not one of the five teams to pull off first-round upsets. Pridnestrovia, Drawkland, and Velstrania were the only top seeds to survive. The most thrilling match of the quarterfinals had to be the 8-7 win by Banija against the hosts, where the Serpent Eagles hit a last-minute two point conversion to defeat Ko-oren. Pridnestrovia and Drawkland both scored 16 points in their matches to advance to the semis, and Abanhfleft doubled up on Velstrania 35-17 in the biggest blowout of the round. This led to a master vs puppet matchup, where Pridnestrovia easily defeated Abanhfleft 30-17. The defending champions in Drawkland returned to the final thanks to their 10-7 win over Banija, but there would be no stopping the Pridnestrovians. They had yet another easy win, beating the Grid Corps 31-10 to capture their first World Bowl championship. At 14-0, that made Pridnestrovia the sixth undefeated World Bowl champions.

Banija hosted once again in World Bowl XXXVII, but this time they utilized a very unique "nations league" style format for the group stage. Instead of a typical pot draw for the groups, 36 nations were divided into three "leagues," with the top 12 teams in one, middle 12 teams in another, and two lowest-ranked teams plus the unranked debutants in the last league. Each league had 3 groups of 4, and the group stage was split into two phases. Group-winning teams from the first phase would be promoted to the higher league, with group-losing teams falling to the lower league for the second phase. Rather than ranking, the pots for the second phase used group placement finishes from the first phase. The top three teams in each top league group and middle league group winners all qualified for the playoffs. Last place top league teams, second place middle league teams, and bottom league group winners entered a play-in round to qualify for the Round of 16. As expected, with each group containing nations much closer in the rankings, there was a lot of parity in each stage. Transmondian Commonwealth of New England, from the second league, were the only team to go undefeated in the first phase. Things were relatively chalk this first phase, with the pot one teams of Pridnestrovia, Drawkland, and Free Republics all winning their top league groups to retain pot one status. Results were more interesting following the second phase, with Pridnestrovia, Ko-oren, and Main Nation Ministry grabbing the top seeds at 5-1. Ko-oren in particular were notable, having only 80 points allowed (best in the tournament) and the best point differential of the top league, despite playing great competition. For the play-in games, the middle league qualifiers actually did better, with Newmanistan and Banija advancing (though they started in the top league in the first phase). Cosumar was the only top league team to not get upset in the play-ins. This was mostly for naught, as the hosting Banija squad were the only play-in team to manage an upset in the Round of 16. Several future playoff rivalries saw their first playoff matchup in these quarterfinals, including Ko-oren's 10-7 defeat of Drawkland and Ranoria's 27-17 upset over Banija. With Pridnestrovia and Free Republics winning their quarterfinals comfortably, this set up a very chalk semifinal field. Seeds #1, #2, and #4 were joined by #11 Ranoria, who lost a tight 17-16 match to Pridnestrovia. Ko-oren's normally defensive squad smashed Free Republics 44-9 to reach their fourth championship game appearance. Like the last cycle, this was a game between two squads looking for a second ring. Pridnestrovia's appearance marked the third straight World Bowl final featuring the defending champion, and it became the third straight final where the defending champion lost. The Dragonfly defense had another signature playoff win, beating Pridnestrovia 6-0 to capture their own second title.

Free Republics kept the two group stage format action going when they hosted World Bowl XXXVIII. Though the 48 participants were arranged into 8 groups of 6 per tradition, this was only a single round robin. After those five games, the top two nations from each group advanced to 4 groups of 4, where the four group winners advanced to a double elimination bracket. With the shortened first group stage, there was little room for error. The defending champions Ko-oren didn't make the cut, and neither did Banija, thanks to early mistakes. Besides a few surprises (like the return of Cassadaigua to the playoffs), the second group stage was filled with the nations one would expect to see in an average Round of 16. Three went undefeated through the first stage, that being 5-0 Taeshan, Drawkland, and Ranoria. Of those three, only one qualified for the actual playoffs: Drawkland at 3-0. Free Republics and Allamunnic States also went 3-0, and 2-1 Cosumar filled out the double elimination playoff field. Despite being the only 8-0 team in the tournament, Drawkland lost their first-round matchup against Cosumar 20-38, sending the Grid Corps to the loser's bracket alongside Allamunnic States. Free Republics won their matches against the Regulars and Cosumar, setting them up as the first finalist team. Now playing in true elimination games, Drawkland survived in pretty comfortable fashion. The Grid Corps beat Allamunnic States 26-3, and got revenge on Cosumar 40-10 to set them up against Free Republics in the double elimination final. Drawkland would have to win twice in a row to capture their first title; Free Republics just needed one win in two tries. The only double elimination final prior to this was 25 cycles prior in WB XIII, where Delaclava came in with advantage, lost to Bluth Corporation in the first match, but came back to win the second. Drawkland would have no such luck to force game two. Free Republics dominated game one, winning an incomprehensible 65-39 (with most of Drawkland's points coming in garbage time) to capture their first title. This wasn't the biggest blowout in World Bowl final history (WB XXX Drawkland still held that record with a 30-point margin), but it did blow the record for total points scored out of the water. The 104 combined points scored easily passed WB XV's record of 59 total points. This also marked the first time since WB XVIII (Civil Citizenry) and fourth time overall (Sarzonia, Delaclava) that the hosting nation won the title on home soil.

An intern at the Pafi Sports Network has been fired today after somehow managing to delete... all of our programming for the day.

As a token point, Pafi lost again to the Grim Reapers, though by a much more respectable scoreline than their first bout... and they finally snapped their losing streak with a decisive blowout victory at home.. against Bobby Dials Group last placers Vaishnavaria. Riveting. Three games left, one of them a showdown in Cardenao which, let's be real, they're going to lose. So here's hoping for a .500 finish at least, and that the scorelines are good enough to boost us to the 16th seed off it? Maybe? Probably not.

We here at PSN apologize for the inconvenience of your lack of sports updates. We will not allow this to happen again.

Postby South Newlandia » Fri Feb 28, 2025 6:23 pm

South Newlandia does not have a main sporting rival that defines their history throughout the ~three decades they’ve competed.
That’s to say, there’s not a main rival. There’s more like, four.

South Newlandia has a relevant history in four different sports, but there’s no opponent that reappears constantly across all the sports. So, it is more accurate to say that South Newlandia has four main rivals – one in every sport.

Starting with the biggest Sport of the multiverse, we can take a look at soccer. Here, we find perhaps the most contentious answer – you certainly wouldn’t be faulted if you said Brenecia. The Elephants have played the Patriots in plenty of important matches – three times in the World Cup proper, and once in the Campionato 32 final, of course the only title that South Newlandia has ever won in the sport. There’s two reasons why the answer isn’t, actually, Brenecia. One is that the Patriots aren’t really around anymore, and the other is that there’s one more important thing to a rivalry – and that’s having strong feelings about one another, a rivalry that transcends sports. The biggest South Newlandian rivals in soccer are Tumbra, the Black Eagles.
That’s not to say that Tumbra and South Newlandia haven’t had their fair share of high-stakes soccer history – they did. There’s the famous game that sent South Newlandia to the World Cup the first time, a 4-0 thrashing when Tumbran soccer was still in its infancy. Tumbra won two CEs in South Newlandia, and South Newlandia’s one CE title went through Tumbra, an amazing 8-7 win on penalties after 120 scoreless semi-final minutes.
But of course, you don’t think about any of these things when you think about the rivalry between South Newlandia and Tumbra. You think about the Tumbran oppression of the Northlands, something South Newlandia has always been vocal to oppose, leading to frequent animosity between their fans. The upcoming Campionato has the two separated in their favourite sport, but they will take each other on in Cricket – incidentally, that would’ve been the fifth sport on the list (answer: Sylestone)

The biggest sport for South Newlandians is a different one – baseball rules the roost on Elephant Island. Here, there’s a clear answer, despite their frequent run-ins with Ko-oren, or their two finals against a mystery nation we’ll get too, or their always-down-to-the-wire battles against their striped friends from Zwangzug. The only correct answer here is Super-Llamaland, who share Llamaphant Pro Baseball with South Newlandia. That’s generated an enormous head start that’ll be tough to catch up against, and they’ve also played some pivotal playoff series at the World Baseball Classic, too – twice in the early fifties, and a bronze medal series some time later. I sure hope the Tigers never retire from baseball, but if they do, someone else might eventually capture this title.

The last of the traditional big three is chess, where the answer is perhaps the most clear. TJUN-ia have played South Newlandia throughout plenty of Elephant Chess Cups, with usually bad ends for the Elephants. That includes two finals, the best runs South Newlandia have had, both ended by the Jaguar Knights. And now, the Multiversal Chess Championships start in South Newlandia, and then head to TJUN-ia, where they currently play the Grand Casaran, before heading to Vielfaltig? That’s just symbolic, I guess.

Anywho, that brings us to the sport that this thread is about - the mystery nation from earlier. The main gridiron rival of the Elephants are clearly the Serpent Eagles. Part of that is the Savannah division, where the two South Newlandian colleges have been routinely dunked on by Banijan heavyweights NMU and ULI (with some few Jungledrom misadventures). There’s also plenty of World Bowl encounters; most recently the WB49 Quarters, when Banija ended the South Newlandian campaign. Before that, Banija won both regular schedule games in WB47 as both teams won their other 12 games. World Bowl 44 saw the Serpent Eagles comprehensively take down the Ellies in the Quarters, taking revenge for one cycle earlier, when the Pachyderms knocked them out of WB43 in double overtime – the first time South Newlandia had ever ventured into the playoffs. All that’s to say, plenty of matchups, and the Banijans have never quite forgotten that double OT game, dishing the Pachyderms plenty losses in return ever since.

So, if you’d told a South Newlandia fan before the tournament that MD12 of the World Bowl group stage, the second matchup between the two rivals, would feature a 10-1 team looking to lock up the group against a 7-4 team in second looking to stay in a good position in the playoff race, they’d probably be quite happy. Given the implications that - South Newlandia had been doing quite well against their tough schedule, - Scott Yadav presumably not tanking the team, - South Newlandia even being ahead of the Iron Legion for the moment, and - getting a chance to spoil the Banijan group win celebrations. Some fans may even dare to dream that the Elephants inflicted the lone Banijan loss in the Jungledrom.
Of course, that’s not quite how the group actually played out. Inexplicably, South Newlandia are travelling to the Olympic Stadium in Istria with a chance to grab another win against the heavily favoured Serpent Eagles (most places have Banija around -11.5) and winning the group, which they’re currently leading 10-1. I have no idea why that’s happening, either, but the Pachyderms are just a single result away from winning their group at World Bowl L, while Banija has fought for a solid, though unimpressive 7-4 record so far. They’ll be looking to stay ahead of the Iron Legion and company with much-needed revenge against their tusked friends.

Unay Kuru, the Busogan Attorney General, presenting to the full Busogan National Security Council

Unay Kuru had just finished his presentation to the full Busgoan National Security Council. There were some things that were certain, and other things that they had not quite confirmed yet. But- the revelations, if true, were stunning. The main points presented upon by Kuru, were as follows

Emergency National Security Presentation
Quebecois hotel Bombings
- The Quebecois Hotel Bombings were 'likely' orchestrated from the Busoga Islands. ULA deemed 'unlikely' to have legitimate involvement.
- With mounting pressure from Quebecois allies, Busogans stepping up arrests

Busogan Election Influence
- There was a multi-national scheme ongoing for the express purpose of influencing the Busogan election- likely from the Busoga Islands. Many social media accounts sourced from the Busoga Islands, but also traces to places like Siovanija, as well as the Squornshelan Confederacy. No evidence of foreign government involvement.
- No evidence of the direct involvement of the opposition Busogan Presidential candidate, Orag Saglik
- Many outsiders are committing 'egregious' electoral campaign law violations, which Busogan officials are struggling to keep up with. Not limited to- foreign donations to the Saglik campaign, untraceable sources running TV and radio ads

No word on whether the two are connected

"Well.... Holy fucking shit." Said President Delbin Kasekende. The room was mostly silent. It was an hour long presentation- going painstakingly through evidence gathered by Busogan authorities, and shared by the Quebecois High Commission in Lakiska, as well as limited information from the Banijan High Commission in Lakiska as well. "So we got twin crisises going on- the ULA have been a longtime enemy of freedom throughout the Commonwealth, but it is rare that the Islamic Republic have been a target of their nation. And then, of course, the election..." And he fell silent. Delbin Kasekende's surprise at his drop in polling over the weeks had made him a frustrated, angry person- the normally calm President was lashing out at anybody who dared to say the wrong thing at the wrong time to him.

"What the hell are we supposed to do in this situation?" The President asked out loud, knowing that nobody there could really give him the sort of answer that he was looking for. "Cancel the election?"

"Well...." Unal Kuray told him. "Despite these... Stunning circumstances- is somebody trying to rig this election from outside of government? But anyways.. Despite these circumstances, there is no provision under Busogan law that would allow for the cancellation of democratic elections. We'd have to take this to the court."

"This shit is fucking nuts." The President said. The Busogan Electoral Commission, a non-partisan body, had started to hammer Saglik, his opponent, regarding campaign finance violations, and the opposition candidate had strongly denied his own involvement in anything weird going on- and he was right. Of course- the President knew that his opponent was a dumbass, and he wouldn't have the ability to rig a Jack Hoy video game, let alone a god damn national election.

"Of course, I can't be seen to be suspending an election that I'm projected to lose..." He said to nobody in particular. And he was right- the optics would be horrifically bad. The Busogan authorities, still, did not know quite what they were dealing with- and with multiple crisises happening, they didn't want to add a third one- a loss of international legitimacy. What would the country's allies say? What would the opposition say?

"Well, it's been done before." Perked up a cabinet member. "Look at Chromatika. They're, what, 2 years behind schedule? And the whole system seems pretty stable there."

"Yeah- but do you think Saglik is going to agree?"

"Well, we may as well try- right?" The President said.

"What if the man himself is compromised?" The Attorney General asked. The question hung in the air, for quite a bit.

"Well- that's a chance we are going to have to take." The President said. "If we can't prove anything of the sort in a court of law, he's a few weeks from the freaking Presidency anyways. If we present the evidence to him, directly- well, if he joins on board, he can make things legitimate. If all the parties are on board, something can be done."

The President's cabinet looked skeptically at Kasekende. But, Delbin thought this was his only chance- and he gave a call to the opposition candidate. They would meet tomorrow night- it was an emergency situation, of course. And with any luck- no investigations necessary, and the opposition would be patriotic enough to not allow this sort of thing to happen in this election.

"Oh- and by the way, I'm signing an executive order, basically right now, that will allow us to step up arrests of any ULA suspects, or anyone that the state thinks is ULA affiliated." And he whipped out his order, and signed it in front of the entire cabinet.

The next morning, at "Francis Kahara's" rib shop in Lakiska, South Island

"Francis Kahara" was getting ready to open his shop for the day. Things were going well for the man. The business was booming- he had a record day of sales before the home game against Chromatika. Despite the Busoga Islands having a tough, 24-10 loss to the Iron Legion, fans were pouring into the restaurant. Today, as any other day, he flipped on the news while he got prepared for the morning.

With the news on, he caught something on the TV that he didn't like. He looked out to one of his minimum wage employees. "Hey bud, did you catch what the reporter said?"

"What? Oh, that the President and Saglik are meeting today. An emergency."

Francis Kahara- who's real name, of course, was Isaza Oyo, was careful not to react. But suddenly, there were alarm bells going off in his head. Of course, Oyo had no idea what they were going to meet about- but two candidates for President, when one was a flagging incumbent, didn't just have 'emergency' meetings for no reason. Oyo/Kahara needed to deal with this- it was a potential crisis. But of course, he didn't want to tip off his employee. What would randomly closing the shop do, or telling everyone to go home do? Oh yeah- that's the type of thing that aroused suspicions. Not that anyone suspected him of anything- but he, of course, was on edge. He knew that, at any moment, he needed to be ready to fly.

But he couldn't fly at that moment. He had to act as normal as possible. So, he'd work his open shift. There was a guy who walked into the restaurant, with his young daughter. As Oyo went to the register to ring him up, the kid's daughter exclaimed.

"Daddy, the cashier looks like you!" And Oyo, who's day had been getting more and more stressful, half-grinned. Kids were amazing- of course this little girl would notice something like that. But it was true- he did look like the man opposite. A funny resemblance, nearly uncanny. Of course, he had no idea how the man was- just one of those weird things where people looked similar to each other.

"Hey- don't point sweetie." The Dad said. Then, turned to Oyo. "Can I get a number 16? Add fries on the side?"

"No worries sir!" Isaza replied. "Actually, you look a lot more like my son." And Isaza looked at the man- a striking resemblance to Namazzi. But he had no idea who he was- definitely not Namazzi. Oyo rang him up, and then went back to make the food. He continued about his daily routine- more and more customers came during lunch rush, and then, at some point in the middle of the day, he had to go out the back to throw some trash into the dumpster. But as he opened the backdoor, he came face to face with a sight that struck the fear of God into him- two Busogan police officers, standing outside his door.

"Uh..."

"Shhhhh." The cops said. "Get out of the way, old man- we've got an arrest to make. " And the police officer shoved him to the ground. But he didn't arrest Oyo- by a miracle, the cop was also dumber than a box of rocks. He sprinted into the restaurant, among what can only be described as one of the most incredible scenes you've ever seen. Cops had pulled up from all sides- and somehow, all at the very last second. They burst inside the restaurant and arrested the customer that looked like Oyo. Violently grabbing him and ripping him away, dragging the protesting man out of the restaurant. And who did they accuse him of being? None other than Oyo's son, Namazzi Oyo.

One of the cops, when leaving, obviously not recognizing Oyo, gave him an apology- 'sorry, Francis right? That we had to make that arrest. Ugly scenes, ugly scenes. But hey, could you stick around for a few hours? We all gotta run- but someone's gotta watch the kid until protective child services gets here." And with that, the cops were off.

But Isaza Oyo was not going to wait around. He had just had the closest call of his life. The cops had just arrested a random dude, who happened to look a ton like his son- and Oyo could only think of why he was arrested. He wasn't going to wait around for nothing. He had shown an incredible amount of skill, basically bending Busogan society to his will. And now, he probably had the most incredible amount of luck ever. Did he have the mandate of heaven? He laughed to himself.

But it was time to get out of dodge. He had grilled his last rib for a long, long while. He needed to step up, or he was going to be snuffed out...

How to throw football?

Rafael Endymion has the largest noodle arm of all time. I mean, the guy's a starting quarterback for a 7-4 team that looks poised to make it to the next round of the World Bowl, and yet he can't throw the ball 20 yards? Dude's lucky he has legs, otherwise he'd have found a way to get cut from a team that had 11 total people show for the 'try-out.'

That's pretty much the story of how the Jirō Island gang lost to Quebec and Shingoryeo. Endymion threw four picks in a game that the team otherwise would've won. Keeping a pretty high-scoring team to 17 points is no small feat. But when you only score 13 total, that's obviously not going to get the job done. So, the team decides to make the guy go to a training camp.

"Guys, I'm not sure this is necessary!" Rafael protests as the team forces him into a van.
"It's for your own good, dumbass!" One of the linemen shouts as the van door slams shut.
Rafael is whisked away to a camp where he'd do nothing but re-learn how to throw a football. Over the course of the next two days, the dude basically rips his arm off throwing nearly 5,000 passes - by the end, he can now throw the ball 30 yards. Warra starting QB...

Defense, Ground Game Power Iron Legion to Third Straight Win

After the dramatic win against the Serpent Eagles of Banija to improve to 4-5, the Iron Legion traveled to the Busoga Islands to win, 10-24, before blanking the United States of Devonta at home 22-0 to improve to 6-5 in Group Play, the first time that they have been above .500 during the stage. Since switching to a more run-centric, defensive style after the loss of their two starting guards, the Iron Legion have conceded sixty-nine points in four matches - including ten in the last two. The Chromatik ground game has been the primary reason for their resurgence, as the Iron Legion has been averaging 218 yards of rushing per game during this stretch. The combination of Rhodes and Merik as body punches, along with Hastroff as the switch-up speedster, has been working; the play-action game being set up by the commitment to the run has meant that Sarai Gwenderyn has been averaging more yards per catch even with the fewer attempts being thrown. All in all, Chromatika is starting to play winning gridiron, and the results are starting to really stick.

Of course, there isn't a lot of room for error. Busoga Islands are tied in the standings - losing due to the head-to-head sweep - while the duo of Katzeburg and Crpostran are lurking at 5-6. The good news is that Chromatika plays both Crpostran and Katzeburg in their last three matches - along with Darmen. Though they will not overlook a single opponent, it is an easy sell that they will be favored in the remainder of the matches. It's also a great time to try to improve their dismal road record - the win at Busoga was the first road win of the campaign for the Iron Legion, very uncharacteristic for a nation that typically excels at playing on the road.

"Ned (Dott) and Donelle (Ruffin) have done a fantastic job filling in for the injured starters," spoke Offensive Coordinator Naia Curentino, "And the Running Backs have taken to their added usage like fish to water. I think they like the fact that they know that they are now the primary engine for this team. The line is playing well, Sarai is doing a great job running what the defense gives us, and everything is clicking on all cylinders right now. It took a fair amount for us to get to this point, but now that we've hit this level, it will be all about maintaining that edge going forward."

As for the defense, Kasen Harrowitz has committed to the bit. Pulling Nikolai Dimitrov back to being the left-side corner alongside right-side corner Victoria Mio, Harrowitz has unleashed the beast that is Lisa Bonsoon. With the quality of players that Park Mi-Hyeon and Jere Rinaldi are at the center of the Iron Legion defense, there is some room for a player to do whatever they want down after down as long as they make enough of an impact - and Lisa has truly unlocked that role. Flashing all over the field, Bonsoon caused four more turnovers in the games against the Busoga Islands and the United States of Devonta, returning one for a touchdown against the Devontans. The front four is providing enough consistent pass pressure, and the Chromatik secondary is playing up to the reputation that their names carry.

It will, of course, take a lot more than this to buy back the trust of the Chromatik fandom. A run into the playoffs is a must, and the Quarterfinals are the realistic floor of this team - anything else than that would be considered an abject failure unless their opponent in the Round of Sixteen was also a world great that had struggled throughout this Group Stage. However, with discipline being in a far better place - Chromatika has averaged four penalties a game in the last four - and the team starting to play with purpose on both sides of the ball, there is reason for optimism.

"Sometimes, it takes losing pieces to recognize the pieces that you had that you didn't know where in the bag," Head Coach Misha Florentine stated regarding the replacement of the Offensive Guards, "With Ned and Donelle continuing to settle in at their positions, I see no reason why we can't keep this up. We're not doing anything fancy, neither are we relying on trickery. Size and strength matter as long as you have the heart and drive to fuel them, and I know that we have the wherewithal to provide exactly that going forward."

The home finale against Katzeburg on Matchday 14 has already sold out at the Henza Center. Katzeburg defeated the Iron Legion the first time around, and are 5-6; this match could decide who finishes third or fourth in the group. Iron Legion fans will be hoping that Chromatika enter this match on a five-game winning streak, having already clinched the Playoffs after such a disappointing start.

This is not a sprint - it is a marathon, and we are nearing the halfway point. Chromatika continues to lengthen its strides, trying to join the front-running pack and not stumble.

It isn't too late, yet.

Bobby Dials sat in the private jet, fingers drumming absentmindedly as the plane descended to their arrival. The steely skyline of Pittsburgh, Ranoria came sliding into view through the port side window as the black and yellow painted jet zoomed over a city desperate for him. It had actually been, at one point, one of the last closely guarded secrets out there but now it was impossible to keep a lid on it: Bobby Dials was headed to the Ironmen.

It was, in hindsight, fairly obvious with Mihaly purchasing the team before installing Steve Valentine, Bobby’s collegiate and international head coach, to lead the operation in Pittsburgh. Then, there was ‘The Trade’: four picks and the Ironmen’s star quarterback for the #1 overall pick. Who else but Bobby? Perhaps the youngest starting QB to ever win the World Bowl ((OOC: haven’t checked the records/not sure if that record exists so I am Boldly Claiming)), an absolute stud who dominated Cold Hill and Richardson in NSCF competition…obviously it was going to be Bobby.

With all of that in mind, with Team Cardenao storming towards the knockouts at the 50th World Bowl, with Bobby Dials still only 24, this was not an ordinary draft night where you’re hoping for a decent stud in a good class. No, one of the best in the world at his position had made himself available; this was rebalancing the order of power in Ranorian, and thus global, football. Not just the first overall pick, not just the new face of the Ironmen, he was now, once again, The Guy. The cornerstone of the entire franchise, he was perhaps singularly the most visible expression of Cardenao’s growing need to ‘establish itself’, whatever the fuck that means. All that though and he was still just a pawn in the geopolitical games Mihaly was engaged in as part of his grand vision for his beloved country.

The quarterback closed his eyes for a minute. The celebration in Cardenao was probably just getting started, everyone would be tuning in to see him go first overall. Man, the streets would be crazy! Fans would be out there, all the old heads would be drinking and comparing Bobby to the legends of their youth. Sports analysts, shoot Missy LeCrown herself would be on the big screens yapping him up, praising this move as a stroke of genius, even Mihaly would likely make a statement, the weirdly unaging leader could never help himself. Back home, he was a hero.

Here in Pittsburgh though? How were the fans going to receive him?

Their team had given up the farm for him. Their starting quarterback, the heart of any football team, had been traded away. Key veterans, cogs of the team who embodied the passion, the spirit of the fans? Gone. Draft capital? Sent to the competition. It truly was all on him now. Bobby smiled to himself.

‘No pressure.’

As he exhaled, that smile became more subdued. He wasn’t walking into a warm embrace at Pittsburgh, shoot it might be awhile before he walked anywhere warm in Ranoria. The locker room he was about to enter would be colder than ice, the Ironmen had just lost their teammates, their friends, men who had been there for years and were part of their family…that was gone and now it was Dials. Now it was time to buy into him and he knew some of them weren’t happy.

The facility had been a little quieter than he expected. Definitely not empty, and certainly there was players and staff who were obviously overjoyed to have him don the famous Black and Gold, but the place was a little emptier than you would expect for a player of Bobby’s caliber. He walked through halls with murals and pictures of past Ironmen greats, of more recent players and historic plays in the team’s history…Bobby stopped before one in particular. The judgemental eyes of Leonardo Torrent, the quarterback who’d been shipped out to make room for the Cardenaoan.

‘Thanks for sending me to the Mountaineers asshole.’

“See you on the field,” the #1-pick elect muttered under his breath. His gaze spread behind Leonardo to the seven championship banners hanging above the indoor practice field. This wasn’t a franchise of scrubs, these weren’t some rookies who didn’t know winning from a hole in the ground, no. This was a team with history, with the weight of expectations. This was not a team nor fans who were used to rebuilding…the Ironmen were and always had been here to win.

As he stepped into the locker room, the world slowed down and all conversation stopped. Eyes were all on him, everyone was looking. Some curious, some neutral, some…not friendly.

As he stepped into the locker room, all conversation stopped. Eyes turned to him. Some curious, some neutral, some downright icy.

Brian Shipman, the massive 32 year old lineman from Cassadaigua stood up from the bench, arms crossed. “So, this is the guy, huh?”

Bobby met his gaze, he was the World Bowl champion and he knew he couldn’t look away at this moment. “Yeah. Yeah that’s me.”

Silence in the room, air so tense you could cut it with a knife for a long second before Brian gave Bobby a small nod and grunted his approval. Some tension faded, he’d passed the first check, but there was a long road left.

Coach Steve Valentine strode in and took stock of the room with his calm but commanding demeanor. Right away, it was clear to him something was going on.
“Alright cut the shit and listen up,” he might also be a newcomer to the team but as the head coach, he needed to earn the respect of the team as soon as possible. “Let’s get it clear because this is a new start for all of us, shit in the past don’t matter, we got a fresh season ahead of us…Look, Bobby’s here now. That’s a fact, that’s the way things are. You guys are professionals, you know this is a business, might not love it but what matters most is what we do on the field now. We’re a team now, we are the Ironmen and we are the ones who have to live up to that. Either we come together to win, or we look back with regret at how we blew this opportunity now. Iron sharpens iron, so we sharpen each other. Play together, play for the man next to you, and we’ll get this right. Banner number 8 will have our names on it. We’re gonna play fucking football and we’re going to fucking win. Ain’t nothing to it but to do it.”

Those words resonated with the team. No forced enthusiasm, no “let’s all be best friends” or “we’re all brothers in this world”. Just straight-up football, we’re gonna win on the field because we’re good at what we do…we’re the best.

Bobby put his stuff in his locker and started getting settled into his new home. Tonight was the draft, tonight the whole world learned and things would really start kicking off.

PLEASE NOTE the events of this RP take place between World Bowl 49, NSCF 32 and the RFL 2041 season. So we've got almost 2 years in Ranoria ICly between this RP and World Bowl L

North Ashialand, Ranoria

"Ladies and uh, trash, welcome to North Ashialand just before the draft. Sweating my ass off on the beach here while you freeze your asses off from, wherever else in Ranoria you're watching!" Who else but the one and only Juicy Jimmy Butler was there at the draft, covering on the Ranorian Football League's own broadcast - notably not the RSNN broadcast, but he adjusted his tie with a flourish before continuing, "You're all of course aware of what shall only be known as the trade in Ranorian history, but I'll probably refer to it as selling the the golden child for a few bums to fill out the roster throughout the rest of the night."

Jimmy's pacing took him in front of the different-colored jerseys of the assembled fans, all cheering in his valiant wake, "I mean shit, I don't know why we're not starting with the number two overall pick tonight, we know what's happening! We've known who these bold sons-a-bitches are gonna draft since we heard about the purchase of the Pittsburgh Ironmen!" Jimmy's eyes drifted a bit to some drop-dead-gorgeous woman in the front row, and he hopped himself up on the fence, "Andrea, why don't you explain to us what happened with the Pittsburgh Ironmen this offseason?"

"My names not Andre-"

"Ma'am am I to take it that you are questioning Juicy Jimmy Butler?"

"Absolutely not!" She replied cheerily, before reciting the history "Our wonderful ownership was in negotiations with the legendary if unknowable Mihaly for months regarding the sale of the Ironmen franchise. It wasn't an easy deal to make, because Jordan Foreman III has long been the most respected owner in the league, but with his own lack of siblings, advanced age, and he and his wife's struggles with miscarriages, he never had a proper heir, and because of that he was willing to sell to Mihaly, making the Ironmen the second team in RFL history to be owned by a foreign entity!

After that, the Ironmen wasted no time. They traded veteran star quarterback Leonardo Torrent, this year's #26 overall selection, the #9 overall pick they got via trade last offseason, and next year's first and second round draft picks to move up to number one overall! It may have gutted the team, but they believe that whoever it is at the top of the draft, they're that good!"

"Young lady that is the hottest thing I've ever heard a woman say," Jimmy whipped out a business card, "Call me!" Unfortunately, the cheap temporary fencing erected by North Ashialand proceeded to give out, and Juicy Jimmy took a plunge, smacking his head on the concrete.

"Uh," she blinked at him, cameras still rolling, "Aren't you married to that one model from two years ago?"

"TRAGICALLY DIVORCED!" Jimmy shot back up, "But now that you, the audience, has an idea of what went down this offseason, we didn't stop there, let's mooch of these feather-chaired. "Listen these guys are belly up in a bar all year, gazin at the birds, I'm workin! So I think it's only fair we mooch off these asshats with their small hands and small c-" the broadcast perhaps thankfully cut off for a second while the crew adjusted their sound systems.

"Jimmy, we could get sue-"
"Just set it up!"

"That's another network's intelle-!"

"For Fuck's sake what am I paying y-"

After a moment, the crew was ready to pick up the sound from RSNN's more official setup. "Look fellas, I'm a fuckin' genius, I'm eight picks ahead anyway, we might as well see what these idiots are talking about!"

"Yes Jim, the Ranorian Football League took some absolutely unprecedented measures in order to secure the services of World Bowl Champion and Most Outstanding Player Bobby Dials and of course, NSCF Champion, 2x Most Outstanding Player Odin Sørbø. RFL commissioner Rolf Nieler was heavy-handed this offseason. He not only encouraged the sale of the Ironmen, but he's approved both the Ironmen and Dietrich Dynamos to waive the rookie pay scale in order to secure the services of Dials and Sørbø."

"Thanks Kelly," Jim Hart, the apparent replacement for the imprisoned Vick Hamilton, clenched his jaw, "I'm not sure how to feel about it. I get it from the perspective of competing for the services of these quarterbacks with more pass-friendly leagues, but this takes a lot of the advantage of a young quarterback away, and I don't like the precedent."

"But Jim, really, Bobby's a World Bowl Champion, do we need the rookie pay scale to keep a team protected when they draft someone that good? And when's the last time a Vanorian hasn't come in and been an instant star at their position in this league?"

Juicy Jimmy erupted in laughter, and the audio went back to him, "Listen to these idiots basically playing grabass, rookie payscale this, nerd shit that, this is it, and here we go, here's the selection!"

Rolf Annelie took to the podium, with just two seconds having come off the clock. A whiskey glass in one hand, a folded piece of high-quality paper in the other. A bit of swagger in his step, all of North Ashialand going silent, "Ladies and gentlemen, just like the Pittsburgh Ironmen, I'll cut right to the chase. With the first overall pick of the 2041 Ranorian Football League draft, the PIttsburgh Ironmen select...Bobby Dials! Quarterback, LeBois Santura University Broncos!"

The Ironmen fans erupted. The chaotic offseason, the animosity they'd build up at the firing of their coach and trading of Leo Torrent, it was gone - they had advanced into the modern era. Bobby Dials was their quarterback. All six foot four and two hundred and twenty two pounds of perfection ran out onto the stage, and pumped his fists to an even more thunderous applause of the crowd.

"Pittsburgh!" he took the microphone in both hands, "We're winning championships again baby!!!!!"

Artist’s rendition of QB Bobby Dials

Bobby Dials' declaration incited a mosh pit with the fans, and Juicy Jimmy Butler was swept off his feet by the crowd, no longer able to keep track of what was going on, before the RSNN booth's Jim Hart's voice boomed across the venue. "Jimmy! Were you recording our broadcast!? That's illegal!" Hart vaulted over his desk and started approaching, and Juicy Jimmy straightened up, the monumental pick forgotten for now.

"Come and get it you son of a bitch, you hammered asshole-smelling son of a bitch!" Before the two could go at it, the mosh pit swept them away, and Juicy Jimmy's broadcast got cut off very prematurely.

Jim Hart made it back to the booth in time for the second overall pick - somehow - because the Dietrich Dynamos had their representative run the card up to Rolf Annelie before he'd even gotten off the stage, and commented as the commish spun on a heel to make his way back up.

"That's about how we thought this thing was going, if both quarterbacks were a guarantee to play in this league, you'd flip a coin, but as is, you've gotta take Dials, and we knew that's what was going to happen. They hired Steve Valentine, they've got Cardenaon ownership, this was set up for him to come in. So that means the Dynamos only have one pick to make. Odin is the only pick here. Sure, he may for very good reason go to the GFLB. Closer to home, better situation for most quarterbacks, but you've
gotta take that chance."

"And here we go," Kelly spun in her chair along with her colleague to watch Rolf make the announcement.

"And with the second overall pick of the 2041 Ranorian Football League Draft, your!" he pointed his free hand in the direction of the fans of Dietrich while downing the rest of his whiskey, "Dietrich Dynamos! Select, Odin Sørbø! Quarterback! Raynor University!"

Now, Odin wasn't able to attend the draft - and we aren't particularly sure if he'll elect the RFL over the GFLB - but the fans of the team went nuts anyway. They'd watched the faithful and above average Swisston University alumni Diego Rodriguez for over a decade now following the generational crashout of Diamond Rhine - and it was time for a new era of Dyanamo football. It started with Art Torrent and Luca Warren. Bo Callahan, Paul Verona, and Derek McNair took it to the next level.

John Garrett. Diego Rodriguez. Sarai Gwenderyn. Benoit Youngblood. Thorn Davis. Ballast Queen. Hell, Ernest Bello and Lualu Luani and uh, the guy in Cavsar. The Ranorian Football League is becoming flush with quarterback talent - and with Bobby Dials and potentially Odin Sørbø joining the ranks, it may have finally fallen beyond the tipping point - is this a quarterback's league now?

Regular season all in one go, yes! Meaning some things were truncated...

#1 because of the time crunch, did not have time to truly figure out the proper home/away matchups to ensure a balanced schedule. Ergo, home advantage was turned off during scorination. Home advantage will be turned on for playoff scorination.

#2 Reminder of scheduling format- play teams twice in your own division, pair with two other divisions and play each team in those once, then play the same place team from last season from the other three divisions. 17 games. League has two byes and they are shared- ICly after week 9 for rivalry weekend in Banijan CFB, and ICly after week 14 for the Banijan college national championship game.

Moravica Division Pld W L PF PA PD
1 Istria Black Mambas 17 15 2 633 225 +408 - Division Champion, First Round Bye
2 Herzegovina City Cobras 17 15 2 601 260 +341 - Wild Card
3 Rukunbi Wizards 17 9 8 423 407 +16 - Wild Card
4 Kosactus Red Vultures 17 5 12 283 539 −256

Consistently, the best division in the game? Last year, it was IStria and Herzegovina City with the best two records in the game- and this year, it's the same. Istria has Kadesh Odika throwing to Russell Farmer. The other team are the defending champs- and a Baka Webo who, for the second straight season, seems to be on a mission to prove to anyone that he's just as good as the NSCF dudes in this league.

Last year Herzegovina City were the only 14+ win team in the league, at 14-3. They won their division, got the #1 seed for the playoffs, and won the damn Simba Bow. Imagine improving upon that regular season performance, and only getting a wild card? That's exactly what happened- and that's how good of a season Istria had. Kadesh Odika took it personally that he wasn't in the Simba Bowl last year, and he's not going to be denied his spot this year. With Russsell Farmer leading the GFLB in TD receptions, and Odika slinging it to him and Godwin Tamuka- well, that's dangerous.

The division came down to a week 17 Sunday Night football matchup- a 14-2 Istria visiting a 15-1 Herzegovina City. And it came down to the final drive. Who was there? Kadesh freaking Odika- throwing the go-ahead TD with 54 seconds left. And who sealed it for the Black Mambas on defense? None other than a player they just traded for, who went to college in Istria- Emmitt Krell. What a race.

The Wizards, almost always forgotten about, are the last team in the playoffs. But hey- they are there. And Rukunbi v. Herzegovina City rivalry renewal in the first round? That'll be fire.

As for Kosactus? Well... This was a team dumb enough to draft Wade Hurley. What else can you expect?

West Division Pld W L PF PA PD
1 Sisonke Leopards 17 14 3 648 326 +322 - Division Champion, First Round Bye
2 Mar Sara Night Elves 17 11 6 439 346 +93 - Wild Card
3 Dukuma Dragons 17 9 8 383 274 +109 - Wild Card
4 Busembe Timberwolves 17 4 13 252 502 −250

And now, for the West Division. Three excellent teams, but not much of a race- Wagner-Young's boys won the division rather comfortably. The Krauts starting QB lit it up for the Sisonke side, as they led the league in scoring, averaging a mouthwatering 38+ points per game. "Look, this is a league that both the Ranorian and Banijan NT starters call home." Said a Banijan TV analyst. "They're always looking to one-up one another- and Wagner-Young had a MVP caliber season this year." The Leopards roster is stacked from head to toe, and the record reflects that. Duhaga as the HB1, Essa Kayode and Angela Sauber as the top two WRs... Wagner-Young has weapons everywhere, and the NMU grad made full use of them.

Beyond him, the Mar Sara Night Elves also had a pretty damn good season. Craig Juniper isn't Wagner-Young, but doesn't need to be- the ULI grad transfer does well with his weapons. Gabriel Yafet had his 35th birthday during the season, and is still producing- pretty damn good for a WR of his age. And then, of course, there's Busoga's team- the Dukuma Dragons. Led by the unheralded Dexter Jacobson, they were a defensive focused bunch- led by 33 year old veteran EDGE rusher Ailo Børve, who led the league in sacks, even at his age.

The Timberwolves were the odd team out- going 4-13. But they at least had their moment. They cost their archrivals, the Sisonke Leopards, the #1 seed- season long over, they went to Sisonke, and beat them, 42-38, at their house. How's that for bragging rights?

East Division Pld W L PF PA PD
1 Bunyoro RSC 17 13 4 533 306 +227 - Division Champion, First Round Bye
2 Duntho Oilers 17 12 5 388 277 +111 - Wild Card
3 St. Jakob Honey Badgers 17 11 6 449 299 +150 - Wild Card
4 Bwubanza Ostriches 17 2 15 297 578 −281

An odd season, right? Three divisions had three playoff teams- and three had 1. The last division with wild cards.

Bunyoro RSC did what many teams dream of doing- going worst to first in a single season. An insane turnaround. They were bottom of the East last year, at 7-10. But they now have 13 wins- which got them the #3 seed, a first round bye, and their first year HC basically a unanimous coach of the year award. And it's crazy, because they had one of the most electric offenses in the league. How did they pull off 30+ per game? "A lot of people say they got lucky- and honestly, they might have been." Said an analyst. "But shit- can't argue with results." 31 points per game scored and 13 wins- doesnt' get much better than that, does it? Nobody really scares you looking at the roster. But Jaxat Taa, the rookie WR out of Loyola, had a monster season, going for over 1300 yards- continuing to confound Loyola watchers who wonder why Sebowa Jawara couldnt' do shit with him in college the last four years.

Beyond that, three 11+ win teams is a strong showing for a division. The Duntho Oilers and Honey Badgers are both in the playoffs- with St. Jakob set to host the first ever GFLB Playoff game played in Teusland. Honey Badgers are built off of defense- a top 5 scoring defense, one of the few to allow less than 300 points on the season- barely sliding in at 299. And the Duntho Oilers did the same, allowing just 277. Their offense probably actually underperformed, as their 36 year old QB, Baayo Sabadaey, didn't really do a ton. But hey- 12 wins and the playoffs. These guys can all do something.

As for Bwubanza... Well it was bad with Diamond Rhine, but somehow, it was worse without. 2-15! They won the division last season! Nightmares all around.

South Division Pld W L PF PA PD
1 Mukeruzi Hyenas 17 10 7 403 331 +72 - Division Champion
2 Busukuma Suns 17 7 10 275 373 −98
3 Hoima Zebra 17 5 12 315 389 −74
4 Busukuma AC 17 2 15 201 566 −365

If you would have told me that a female Chromatik QB was going to win this division, I would have told you that the sky is indeed blue. But if I had said which one, you might have been surprised.

I know what you're all thinking- the Hoima Zebra going 5-12? A stunning season. However, mitigating circumstances. First, the schedule- they started the season with Mynda, then the Herzegovina City Cobras, and the Sisonke Leopards- a brutal intro the season. Didn't help that A-MV went down in Week 2- and she never really looked the same after that. She played with a hurt ankle for a few weeks, but after they lost 16-9 to the Wild Boars in Week 9, to get to 2-7, the brass in Hoima decided to shut her down the rest of the season. It happens in the pros- season's lost, protect your investment. It'll be interesting for them, as it's a contract year for A-MV- although we expect, of course, Hoima to tag her.

The Hyenas took advantage of their rival's misfortune, and won the division. Emilee Johansson had a pretty solid season- consistency, if not world-class. She's got the best WR in the league, in Kasozi Batte- literal Olympic track speed, and a competitor. She had a 'he's down there somewhere' mantra, throwing bombs all year long. 33 TDs, 22 INTs. But hey, division champs- can't hate if it works, right?

In the capitol, it's still dark. Busukuma AC is an absolute embarassment to everything we hold sacred, while the Suns were actually respectable, at 7-10.

Central Division Pld W L PF PA PD
1 Igulu Bush Elephants 17 11 6 306 161 +145 - Division Champion
2 Lwanga Rhinos 17 9 8 317 303 +14
3 Isipongo Wild Boars 17 6 11 189 338 −149
4 Umbazi Metropolitan SC 17 5 12 337 328 +9

Where everyone in this league likes to zig- the Bush Elephants like to zag. led by the mid-70s Ranorian, Richard Steinheil, they've built a fantastically fierce defense- and have ridden it, in this offensive driven league, all the way to the playoffs. They tried that route last year, and could build a good defense. But to have that strategy in a league with this kind of QB tatent? You need an all-world defense- and they came through in a big way. They allowed only 161 points all season- no other defense allowed less than 200. They've got like 7 or 8 Banijan NTers on their defense alone.

But this year? They have a real offense. Signing a real QB out of free agency, Oladobu Nantambu, as well as drafting an explosive WR, Hugo-Wojciech Son-Saka, has given them enough to make the playoffs. Son-Saka has been all sorts of dominant- the rookie WR nearly uncoverable. They're not asked to do a ton- but with a defense like that, 18 PPG is enough. Do they have enough offensive firepower for a playoff run? We're not sure about that- but they're balling right now.

Beyond the Bush Elephants, there isn't much to say here. The Rhinos almost weathered the storm of Ebou Hairte's retirement, but their rookie QB, while leading them to a 9-8 record, couldn't quite get them to the dance. And beyond that... Well, try not to think about it. A hugely disappointing season in particular for Umbazi- going from 12-5 to 5-12, in one season, is outright embarassing. HC was fired on Black Monday, and they're cleaning house.

North Division Pld W L PF PA PD
1 Mynda Gorillas 17 11 6 580 306 +274 - Division Champion
2 Jinja City Springboks 17 7 10 323 419 −96
3 Aissa Crocodiles 17 6 11 270 434 −164
4 Askatasuna Wildcats 17 5 12 245 803 −558

Let's start with the Mynda Gorillas. Last year, they had a simple strat- take advantage of a weak division, win it, make the playoffs, and get a home playoff game to boot. They did exactly that- and this season, they rinsed, washed, and repeated an old strategy. You get yourself a top 4 seed and a first round bye, and you've got as good of a chance as any to win the tournament- and the Gorillas put themselves in a perfect position to make that happen. Almost exact repeat- same record, same #4 overall seed. But hey- consistency is consistency.

They've got a young QB, but Dukku Banyuse has looked pretty good so far. The division really couldn't compete- the Gorillas were too strong. Kori Jabayo, the WR1, had a big year, and with a couple of NTers on the left side of the O-Line, they were able to dominate in the trenches. Out of this division, the most interesting, however, was the Jinja City Springboks. They didn't make the playoffs, and frankly didn't come close- but the rookie QB, Odin Sørbø, showed some flashes of potential. "Next year they might be real competitiors for the division." A TV analyst said. The Vanorian brought them from a 3 to a 7 win team, which is a tougher jump than it seems. Next year playoffs? They're sniffing for it.

Color Code
Green means that the team has a first round bye
Blue means that the team made the playoffs and will play in the first round
Bold means that the team won their division

Reminder for the playoff format. 12 teams make the playoffs. Top 4 division winners are the top 4 seeds, get first round byes. Last two division champions are guaranteed playoff spots but not home games. Seeding 5-12 is otherwise based straight on record. No re-seeding after the first round, but there is re-seeding after the second round.

RP Prompt: The bid promised some worldbuilding prompts- so here we go!

Talk about love lives in your nation. Tell me everything there is to know! Both dating culture and marriage. In terms of dating culture- is there dating culture in your nation? Do people choose their romantic partners? Are they generally set up by parents or others? Is there a lot of pressure to date at a certain age?

And for marriage- how does marriage work? Does your nation practice monogamy, or polygamy in marriage? Is divorce legal? Is it frowned upon?

And to tie it in- tell us about the romantic partner of one of your players or coaches for this tournament. Do they have their own career? Are they treated celebrities? Do they live lavishly? Are they popular, or even known, in generally society? How did they meet us? Tell us everything we need to know- and tell us everything we don't, either. Need all the juicy details!

(Reminder that RP Prompt can be amended or ignored by users at their choosing. There is no punishment for ignoring the prompt, nor any bonus for following it).

Nova Calania defeats Quebec & Shingoryeo in hostile conditions

Burnham-on-Stove - On week 12, Nova Calania received Tumbra at Tiger-Dolphin Stadium an hybrid baseball park/football field and we could see the baseball infield in one end. Tumbra starts with the ball and will defend the baseball outfield in 1st and 4th quarters. Nova Calania will defend baseball infield in 1st and 4th quarter and will have the ball to start the 2nd half. Nova Calania took the lead midway in the 1st quarter with a 15 yards touchdown pass from Arielle Bellerose-Deslongchamps to Guillaume Bibeau-Babeux. The score after one quarter was 7-0. Nova Calania increased their lead with a 38 yards field goal early in the 2nd quarter. Tumbra answered on their next drive with a 41 yards field goal. Nova Calania couldn't score on their next drive and Sébastien Piquette punted the ball and it was downed at the 2 yards line. on a 2nd and 8 at the 4 yards line, Zachary Liew gets sacked in his own endzone by Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon for the safety. Nova Calania increased their lead late in the 2nd half with a 13 yards rushing touchdown by Arielle Bellerose-Deslongchamps. The score at halftime was 19-3 Nova Calania.

Nova Calania made a 25 yards field goal early in the 3rd quarter. Late in the 3rd quarter, Zachary Liew's pass intended to Graham Vennick was intercepted by Raphaël Casgrain who returns the ball to the 22 yards line in Tumbra territory. On a 3rd and 4, Arielle Bellerose-Deslongchamps throws to Ryleigh O'Shaughnessy in the endzone for the touchdown. Tumbra scored a touchdown early in the 4th quarter when Zachary Liew reached Henry Carver in the endzone for a 24 yards passing touchdown. The Tapirs added 3 more points late in the 4th quarter and the final score was 32-10 Nova Calania.

Jean-Alexandre Guindon

Iqaluit, Nagligusuŋniq, Quebec & Shingoryeo - Nova Calania travelled to Quebec & Shingoryeo on week 13 and weather conditions were somehow hostile. To Nova Calanians, any weather below 15 °C or 60 ° F is too cold. It was a sunny day though, but cold. Adding to the weather, the stadium was filled with the Bubonic Plague, the infamous Quebec & Shingoryeo ultras, and because they were on their homeland, they caused more noise than when they visited Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer on week 6. Nova Calania started off with the ball and Ji-yoo Han kicked a 29 yards field goal on their first drive. Quebec & Shingoryeo scored a touchdown just before the end of the 1st quarter when Seong-Weon Ryu crossed the goalline on a 6 yards run. Nova Calania made another field goal late in the 2nd half and the score was 7-6 Quebec & Shingoryeo at halftime.

Nova Calania took the lead late in the 3rd quarter when Arielle Bellerose-Deslongchamps threw a 21 yards screen pass to François-Pierre Guirguis, the 3rd halfback on the depth chart, for the touchdown. The Tapirs tried a 2 points conversion because they wanted to lead by 7 points instead of 6 but Arielle Bellerose-Deslongchamps' pass on the conversion was broken up by Alexei Randanovich. The score after 3 quarters was 12-7 Nova Calania.
Quebec & Shingoryeo took the lead early in the 4th quarter on a 19 yards pass from Benoît Youngblood to Kieran Kweon-McNair. And they tried the two points conversion, so they would lead by 3 points rather than 2. Benoît Youngblood wants to throw the ball but no one is open and he runs with the ball and crosses the goal line for 2 points. The Grim Reapers leads by 3. Late in the 4th quarter, Arielle Bellerose-Deslongchamps' pass intended to Anne-Élisabeth Guirguis is intercepted by William Brodeur-Kiser who always makes clutch plays when needed. Brodeur-Kiser returns the ball to the 38 yards line in Nova Calania territory. Quebec & Shingoryeo was stopped at the 14 yards line and Onele Dyani made a 31 yards field goal. The Grim Reapers are now leading by 6, Nova Calania have roughly 2 minutes and 2 time outs to score. The Tapirs have the ball at the 18 yards line on a 4th and 14 with a few seconds left. Arielle Bellerose-Deslongchamps takes the snap, wide receiver Ophelia Van Voorhis is in motion in the backfield, Bellerose-Deslongchamps pitches her the ball and runs forward. Van Voorhis throws the ball to Bellerose-Deslongchamps who was open and it's a touchdown! The final score was 19-18 Nova Calania!

Quebec & Shingoryeo was in shock after the match, trying to understand what happened, what wrong they did. The Bubonic Plague was causing chaos outside of the stadium and the Nova Calanian gridiron football team was locked in the stadium for 5 hours following the game for their safety. Nova Calania is in 3rd place tied with Kamijiro but we lost 2 times against them, meaning the Tapirs are 4th in the standings. Cardenao are the group champions, Quebec & Shingoryeo are in 2nd place with one more win than Kamijiro and Nova Calania. On the final week, Nova Calania receives Pafi in Shanzhou, Kamijiro travels to Tumbra and the Grim Reapers plays in Vaishnavaria. The standings could remain unchanged if everyone wins but Nova Calania have the toughest opponent in Pafi who are doing great so far for an unranked team. If we take a look at every 4th placed teams, Nova Calania is in the driver's seat with 8 wins and 5 losses. All other 4th placed teams have 7 wins and 6 losses or 6 losses and 7 wins. If Nova Calania wins and Kamijiro also wins, Nova Calania is the 16th seed. If Nova Calania wins and Kamijiro loses, Nova Calania is a 3rd placed team. if Nova Calania loses, it will go to the tie break with any 7-6 team who wins on week 14. Any team with a 6-7 record can't make the knockouts as the 16th seed, however one of them, in group Dustin Beck, will finish 3rd in their group.

NOVA CALANIA 3 3 6 7 - 19

Second Round of the Playoffs

Second Round Playoff Matchups
Duntho Oilers(12-5) @ Bunyoro RSC(13-4). Kickoff is Saturday at 4:35 PM.
Rukunbi Wizards(9-8) @ Mynda Gorillas(11-6). Kickoff is Saturday at 8:15 PM.
St. Jakob Honey Badgers(11-6) @ Sisonke Leopards(14-3). Kickoff is Sunday at 2:30 PM.
Mar Sara Night Elves(11-6) @ Istria Black Mambas(15-2). Kickoff is Sunday at 6:15 PM.

Duntho Oilers(12-5) @ Bunyoro RSC(13-4). Kickoff is Saturday at 4:35 PM.

And now, the Duntho Oilers, coming off of the game of a weekend- a spectacular 38-30 shootout win in a playoff game over the Dukuma Dragons- are traveling to Dodoma to take on Bunyoro RSC. Bunyoro RSC probably had the most shocking turnaround out of any team this season, if we are to be quite honest. From last to first- the dream turnaround for any team. And so when these two locked horns, it was always going to be tasty. Especially since these two teams play in the same division- that familiarity you get when you are playing each other for the third time this season.

But, of course, it's the early game of the weekend because... Well, not a lot of star power here. And the stars on both of these teams? On this day, the stars in this game was the kicker. Each team, throughout 60 minutes of regular time, only managed one touchdown. The Oilers, via a 7 yard QB scramble by their 36 year old quarterback, Baayo Sabadaey in the 2nd quarter. And Bunyoro RSC through a third quarter, 37 yard TD pass to Jaxat Taa. The rookie WR really had a spectacular grab- beating his man on the double move, streaking towards the end zone. The pass was underthrown- but he was able to make the adjustment anyways. Both kickers were three for three on the day from FG range, including Duntho's Chromatik kicker, Park Jung-Shik, hitting the game-tying FG from 56 yards out as time expired. 60 minutes wasn't enough- we're getting overtime!

Now, remember- while in the regular season the league uses shootout overtime rules (aka college/IFAF OT rules), while in the playoffs, they use modified sudden death overtime rules (aka NFL regular season OT rules). Now, the all-important coin toss came about- and Duntho, the visitors, won it. This was a team built for the moment, one would think. Sabadaey playing an extra year, for this- because he felt he could make a playoff run with Duntho. The league's oldest QB started methodically driving his team down the field. But the defenses are tougher in the last 8.

He had a chance to win it- one that will haunt him. 3rd & 7 from Duntho's own 49 yard line. He had time in the pocket. Tamba Kusa, the slot WR, somehow got loose behind the defense. He could have ended it on the first drive- but he overthrew his pocket. He had time in a tall pocket, the WR was open- he just got overexcited, and overthrew him. "That's a throw that will haunt me for the rest of my days." Sabadaey said after the game.

And that was his last throw of the game- and potentially his career, depending on if he retires after this season. The ensuing punt was a touchback, and Bunyoro RSC simply marched down the field- 7 plays, 80 yards. Not a single series even got to third down. The key play? A 28 yard strike to Jaxat Taa, that took them from the Duntho 33, to the Duntho 5 yard line. And on first and goal, they were not going to be denied, as HB Thaddeus Ouko pounded it in from 5 yards out for the 22-16 win. What a game it was- off to the semifinals for Bunyoro RSC!

Rukunbi Wizards(9-8) @ Mynda Gorillas(11-6). Kickoff is Saturday at 8:15 PM.

And now, off to Mynda. The Rukunbi Wizards were buzzing- that win, over Herzegovina City- how huge it was cannot be understated. "It might have been the biggest win in franchise history." Said a Banijan TV analyst. Out of the OG 16 teams in the GFLB, they are the only ones to have never played in a Simba Bowl. Yup, you read that correctly. A historically dormant franchise, usually the afterthought in a city like Istria- where the Black Mambas are so dominant. The Wizards fanbase is passionate, although largely confined to the Rukunbi borough of Istria. They are the noisy neighbors. They've got much bigger neighbors with the Black Mambas, and a rivalry with the Herzegovina City Cobras, as well.

But think about it. Rukunbi were 9-8 this season. Last team in the playoffs. They played the 15-2 defending champs, on the road, in the first round. And they only went out and got the upset of the season. "Look- they underestimated us because we're from Rukunbi. But look- we just beat the champs. Why not fucking us? Why not us??" The team captain, Buba Soso, told reporters. And it was an intriguing matchup. The team that they would take on is the Mynda Gorillas. North Division champions, second straight year as the #4 overall seed. Last year they got the bye, and it didn't matter- got popped by Istria in the first round. Would the other Istria side pop them out of the playoffs?

This was a spectacular contest, a back and forth game. It featured tremendous skill, and a tremendous comeback. It was on the back of Felix Ström's strong performance, with 3 TD passes(2 to Kario Memphis), that allowed Rukunbi to be leading, 24-14, with under 6 minutes to go. But the home side would indeed roar back. Banyuse went into full comeback mode. Kori Jabayo had a TD reception late, and then they fed Osman Pyatt to get them into FG range for the game-tying one. Their kicker hit the tying one with 10 seconds left, and at 24-24, this marked the second game of the day that would go into overtime.

Now, remember- modified sudden death. This game went not only to overtime- but a rare sighting of double overtime. Well, on the opening possession, Mynda got the football, had a 6 minute drive, and kicked a short FG. Then, on the next possession, Rukunbi had a 7 minute drive, which included a clutch 12 yard scramble by Felix Ström on a 4th & 7, and responded with a FG of their own. So then, we were at sudden death. Mynda had the football. But who would make the deciding play? Busogan CB Zeynel Heper. A diving interception at the Mynda 27 yard line. They only got two yards on the ensuing play, but that didn't matter- Soma Baru, Rukunbi's kicker, drilled a 42 yarder to send, improbably, the Wizards, of all teams, straight to the GFLB Semifinals.

Count' em off- not one, but two road wins in the playoffs. Can they get a third, and make it all the way to Busukuma?

St. Jakob Honey Badgers(11-6) @ Sisonke Leopards(14-3). Kickoff is Sunday at 2:30 PM.

It's Sunday afternoon in Sisonke! The Leopards took on the Honey Badgers, who had a defensively dominating performance in their 21-9 playoff win last weekend. But the Leopards are the #2 overall seed- and frankly, they are the #2 overall seed for a reason. They showcased to the world exactly how good they were, with a 28-0 demolishing of the Teus side, St. Jakob.

There really isn't much to say. I mean, they pitched a shutout- and in THIS league, that's pretty damn rare. But they were utterly dominant. On defense, it was their ability to get pressure that just killed the Honey Badgers. Mykhajlo Vyacheslavovych Kozlov and Kang Joseph, the team's two Chromatik DEs, had 3 sacks each, in what was an incredible playoff effort. The Leopards have a singular minded goal, and it's to get to the Simba Bowl. The offense did their part. Wagner-Young had a 47 yard TD pass to Essa Kayode on the game's opening drive, and he threw two more TDs in the second quarter- one to the tight end, Kulubo Secka, and another to Angela Sauber, his Ranorian compatriot, and Krauts teammate. A 21-0 lead in a game like this, at halftime, and it was long over. Isaga Duhaga got on the scoreboard as well, early in the 4th quarter, to seal the deal. Final score of 28-0, off to the Semifinals they were.

Mar Sara Night Elves(11-6) @ Istria Black Mambas(15-2). Kickoff is Sunday at 6:15 PM.

The Saturday games, were spectacular. We saw both games go to overtime, back and forth battles. The early game today was rough- a 28-0 blowout. And this game, at the Olympic Stadium in Istria- well, it was much more of the same. The Black Mambas have their eyes set on the prize- 15-2, division champs, won on the last game of the season against the defending champs. And they won 31-10. A hell of a performance from a high-quality Black Mambas team. Kadesh Odika, the star QB, had a hell of a performance- 344 yards passing, and 4 TDs- with 145 of those yards, and 2 of those TDs, going to the FarmBoy himself- Russell Farmer.

"We've got to bring this city a championship." He told reporters after the game. "This team didn't have the defense last year- but now, we're absolutely built for this." They've got a home semifinal now- is the Simba Bowl in their destiny?

Second Round Score Summary
Bunyoro RSC 16–16 Duntho Oilers (22–16 OT)
Mynda Gorillas 24–24 Rukunbi Wizards (27–30 OT)
Sisonke Leopards 28–0 St. Jakob Honey Badgers
Istria Black Mambas 31–10 Mar Sara Night Elves

13:00, Few days later
Grand Room, Henri-VIII Pavilion, Jeongdeokgoong Palace
Joongyeong, Joongyeong

It would take another week or so before the Privy Council of Shingoryeo had managed to get together for an emergency meeting. Of course, it wasn't one that had required a big participation, and if anything the meeting wasn't even carrying the usual strictly optional tag for a meeting that's intended to those less involved in the topics of the day.

But the matter of discussion on hand was still a surpriser for plenty - a 900-page manifesto accompanied by possible attempts of hostile takeover in the Principality of Montevicio, was one that could threaten the domestic stability of Quebec and Shingoryo. There had been several trails of evidence gathered to the Privy Council by this point - those that had been gathered separately through their elderly Chair's son, Sergio Heo Sierra; through torture-I mean-interrogation from the Jopok members presumably involved in the Cheval-Noir hotel bombing a month or two ago; and others - but the extent to which this plan, so-called 'Project 2070', had intended to radical restructuring of Montevician executive branch with intention to destroy most civil rights and equity in the nation, was another story.

Of course the plans put forward by lots of 'foundations' and 'non-profitables' had been notable in past, especially in the days past the Saganash-led Purge of 2038 amid Moogoongwha Party's disputes, but it had only gotten worse since put on the fringes following the disgraceful exit and Epstein'd of Pierre 'PeePee' Pointon a decade ago. So even without factoring into other issues like this possibly transmitting into the actual Shingoryeoite trritory, it was clear to everybody that this had to be addressed sooner the better. With this in mind, the emergency meeting was held earnestly for the PCS, with Christine II, the Prime Minister Lucien Azagury-Zovaco, Lord President Dr. Heo Dong-Soo, and last three former Prime Ministers Arsene Pineau Kim, Jacques Lee Ellington, Irene Kweon Binnington, Chief of the NIS Jacques Salgado, and the Commander of Joint Forces Command General Ludovic Hamon-Okpik joining them. Some had been considered for this beforehand, such as other members of royal family or the Deputy Prime Minister, but they had decided to keep the meeting small considering the urgent nature of it all.

The meeting was set to happen at one in the afternoon in the Henri-VIII Pavilion at the Daemyeongoong Palace, separately from the main buildings that had other senior members of the family on board. It was a decision taken by the Queen, who had particular reservations over some members such as her own son, the Prince of Abitibi, himself, and with most having already done their readings or been aware of the recent updates, it was going to be a fairly straightforward meeting to discuss what possible actions could be administrd.

Even then, when they had all arrived at the meeting, most had been surprised to see how stern Christine II had looked when she entered the hall. Upon entry, they all gave a lightest head bow to the Queen. This was waved off quickly by the regent, who had no interest in pomp and circumstance, as they all sat back in the table.

'Thank you everybody,' Christine II looked back at them, her eyes sharper than in usual times. 'It's certainly a fitting occasion for us to be here to discuss a matter of national security, in the room named after my grandfather, the grand Soongdeok-je [Emperor Soongdeok] no less.' Everybody had responded to her remarks, on a chamber opulent no less, with a nod. Had this been her a quarter-century ago this would have been a different story, but after 26 years of her reign, it was fairly easy to get around the fact Christine II was the youngest member present. Of course the last four PMs [including her first PM, the late Kim Seung-Yin, who passed of old age in 2065 at age 89] had all worked closely they had all been familiar with the procedures of these meetings, as well as various emergencies and unforeseen circumstances, that the regent's presence had not ended up a problem.

'I'm sure all of you had been made aware of the latest meeting of a certain Northwestern Arrosian Heritage Society's meeting out west, in Montevicio,' Christine II had said, before continuing. 'And how some of you have received specific details as to what is planned under and in association with their so-called Project 2070, that aims to takeover the Principality and subsequently, the mainland.'

'Yes, your majesty,' said Arsene Pineau Kim, the longest-serving Prime Minister of Taewha Era. Tall, well-grizzled and enjoying retirement, certain confidence Arsene always held in public landed him the nickname 'Mr. Victory' in the eyes of many after becoming PJLQ's first Prime Minister in 65 years back in 2044 election. 'It appears that the certain transmission of the disease that had begun under the Prime Minister's late predecessor, an abominable PeePee no less, appears to take root in search for its implementation.'

Everybody else looked back at him and then turned to Lucien Azagury-Zovaco, who appeared particularly annoyed with the association with a literal child trafficker and a hate crime propagator. 'Please, Arsene,' Lucien responded immediately, taken offence to slightest suggestions of such. 'Your legacy, especially in terms of counterterrorism has no currency, whereas I, a Saganashian, had been the first in condemning the deceased-'

'Silence,' answered Dr. Heo, the Lord President appearing to be annoyed with minor accusations thrown between Prime Ministers. Three out of four Prime Ministers, after all, held ties to him, most notably in the 79-year old having openly supported Arsene Kim, whose mother was his doctoral supervisor no less, in past. And even the fourth, who did not share much with him, he reluctantly agreed with considering his usual party allegiance with now-renamed Front Populaire de Shingoryeo. 'Your majesty, I'm sure we could proceed further to discuss the objets, and ways of eliminations.'

'Thank you, Lord President,' Christine answered, before deferring to the NIS Chair. 'I am sure we all, to some distant degree so fleeting, may or may not have connections with some of more troubling parts, mainland or the Principality, but this is why we are not here. Can we please receive further information on the latest financial and political source of so-called project?'

'Yes, your majesty,' answered Jacques Salgado, who turned on the powerpoint slide illustrating two primary figures. 'I'm sure you have seen both figures in past, one of them some of you have gone strictly against our bureau's advice but others a fairly ordinary process. One of them, of course, is the new Montevician Prince, Louis III, and the other is a Mwasi-Africain billionaire, also known as MAX and Edison Motors owner-CEO, residing there and in South Bend named Ferran Tusk.'

'Caca Tuque Tusk,' answered Irene Kweon Binnington, the Prime Minister having had issues with the said figure over the restrictions of hate-crime content increasingly becoming prevalent in the SMS application.

'Indeed, Madame Kweon Binnington, Salgado answered with little to no hesitation. 'We have been able to track down extensive financial trails from both Louis and Tusk, as well as certain permits, that suggest certain operations are set to take place. We cannot explicitly state the extent or the plans, but it is likely to involve self-coup with Louis declaring a self-coup in the name of fallacies.'

'Nonsense, Is this even possible?' asked Jacques Lee Ellington, the former second to Arsene feeling skeptical over such possibility. 'The Montevician Public Forces have only 2000 troops at most in an area of 600,000. Their own police is barely running and even struggling to maintain proper firearm arsenal. Does this mean that they intend to dispatch privateering forces, presumably from that billionaire himself? What about our own soldiers?'

'I think you are onto a right trajectory here, Jacques,' Lucien answered as his eyes shot up. 'That runs into the centuries of treaties, declarations and everything else that had been signed. It requires a military intervention, those that you might even call that precautionary.'

'Understandable,' Jacques answered. 'In that case, what our trail of information suggests is that we would have to eliminate the risk on subsequent days. When is the roughly expected date, and how long would it take for us to intervene if coming from Los Pueblos by air, as well as Wakanai and Miramare on water?'

'Our general line of suspicion, those that her majesty can confirm, is that it's a matter of time. But we just don't know when, because it's probable he will just go on drunken stupor and say those idiotic ramblings himself,' Arsene Kim answered. 'But you know just as well as anyone else here that whatever he says will be backed by Tusk. It's just that we'll have to be on guard, and jump onto it immediately.'

'Also understandable,' Lucien answered. 'I'm sure, your majesty, that this is a matter of national security, and that we'd have to address this immediately. Obviously you, your father, and your grandfather most importantly, have led us ministers before and now, and I hope you will make the right decision.'

And that was something Christine already had an answer for. 'Absolutely, who am I to doubt your respective judgment in matters so urgent?' Christine answered with no hesitation. 'I'm sure that the Prime Minister, in coordination with myself, my husband the Duke of Halifax, and Commanding General Hamon-Okpik, will coordinate what is to come in upcoming weeks.' She then coughed, before resuming to speak. 'What would be the name for the operation?'

'I would personally suggest Blade Runner, your majesty,' Commanding General answered. 'Gotta have a name that lasts into the eternity.'

'That's good, and now we proceed.' Christine nodded, before saying the final remarks of the meeting. 'The meeting is now dismissed.'

Afterwards, a roar of voices was followed as all but Irene had chanted 'God save the Queen!' to farewell salute. The meeting was adjourned for the day.

Ellies secure first ever WB group title

Scott Yadav and the other Elephants couldn’t quite hang in Banija, but bounced back for a narrow win against Busoga Islands to move to 11-2 and lock up the group with a game to spare. Manager Victorino has announced that QB Yadav will get the final game off, with the Elephants headed to Devonta to finish up their schedule. That game does still matter somewhat – Ranoria and Cardenao are too far gone to be caught, but South Newlandia could still move between seeds 3 and 5. That means they’ll play a team clocking in between 12 and 14 – right in the middle of the third-placed teams, so the pool of potential opponents is already quite limited – down to four realistic ones.

Kamijiro and the United States of Nova Calania are locked into a close race for third, and are both probable Elephant opponents. Starting with Kamijiro; the Esportivans are still only playing their second campaign, but they’ve looked like veterans this World Bowl. Their 8-5 record arguably undersells them, in a tough group that includes WB champions Cardenao. Of course, their previous WB saw them make the playoffs as rookies, where they lost a close game to the Pachyderms. Kamijiro is probably not opposed to getting a rematch with their regionmates, having gained an entire World Bowl of experience.

The United States of Nova Calania are ranked 14th in the multiverse, just two spots behind the Elephants. The Tapirs are also at 8-5, and are facing unranked Pafi while Kamijiro play Tumbra. Kamijiro have out-done them in a lot of metrics so far, but the Tapirs won’t give up, and have proven an ability to beat strong teams. They’re the only team to beat Cardenao since the Elephants did so last group stage, taking revenge on their first-round exit in the previous WB.

Between South Americanastan, Juvencus, and New Umoja, one team will advance in third – but they’ll take the 15-seed, so barring a swap, they’re not in play for the Pachyderms.

Sarzonia and TJUN-ia are still jockeying for second place in their group. With Sarzonia already on 10 wins and playing Rouyoute, they’ll take the 11-seed even if they get jumped by the Jags, so are unlikely to be the Ellies’ first round opponent. TJUN-ia, meanwhile, is much more likely. The Jaguars have been consistently good for a playoff win or two, lately, but the 6th-ranked team in the multiverse may have been hoping for more than third place. In a group with Valanora and Sarzonia, that doesn’t come easy, so at 9-4, they’re in need of a win against Delaclava to improve their chances on the final day. TJUN-ia have been a frequent rival of South Newlandia across sports, and of course, the two sides currently represent the top-ranked gridiron teams from Esportiva – although certainly not the historically best of those competing in WB L. The Jags, with TSU grad Leon Hallas under center, do represent the toughest potential opponent of the Ellies, with a strong group on both sides of the ball this campaign; although they are now some time removed from their last playoffs wins, which, incidentally, took place in South Newlandia, when they made a semifinal run in WB47.

The math for HUElavia is easy – they’ve already got third place locked. They stand at 8-5 currently, and are likely to add another win to that tally. The 13th-ranked team in the multiverse has had a fairly quiet campaign with Duarte Lobo under center, and are prone to cause a clash of colours with the Elephants should they match up. Hailing from outside the major sporting regions, they’ve been a very balanced squad this World Bowl. In recent campaigns, they’ve been a team that hasn’t quite had a deep run yet, but is often good for a playoff appearance. Notably, Their last playoff win came in the Jungledrom, when they stunned the Dragonflies 23-3 in the first round of WB47.

It was perhaps the most important two weeks of the Sabres existence, traveling to TJUN-ia to take on the Jags before returning home to take on current group leaders and Arrosian rivals Sarzonia. Getting at least one win was going to secure the Sabres progression to the knockout stages, which would be the third time running after the team made the last two knockout stages only on both occasions to have been eliminated by the aforementioned Sarzonia. Last World Bowl had felt like a step back following the previous one, where the team had put together an eight and two record, recording their first ever wins over a higher ranked opponent with a pair of victories over the Fleftics, with themselves and the Sabres being two of three teams ranked in the group. Yet last edition saw a group of death with the Sabres drawn against hosts Drawkland, as well as powerhouses Quebec and Chromatika, as well as the rising power that was the Nova Calania side, the team whose upset of the Sabres nearly ended their chances of making the knockouts that edition. Yet with a five and four record, the team managed to get but like the edition before could not muster a victory over Sarzonia.

At TJUN-ia the Sabres did what few teams have been able to do against the Jags this entire group stage and have a relatively successful offensive attack against the group's best defense. Thirty-four points did mean that the streak of putting up forty points had been brought to a close but being able to put up that many points against what had been an elite defensive unit was massive, especially on the road. It was a huge statement and though the defense was beaten a few times, they were able to stand up when it mattered and helped the team secure a major road victory over a group title rival. Doing the double over the Jags put the team in prime position to be able to finish second in the group at worst and offered them a chance to be able to leapfrog into first place in the group if the following week they could finally shake off the jynx that Sarzonia had been. However in the moment the victory over the Jags was supremely sweet, a major vindication for the staff in trusting in their team even after the road woe in Natkr, they kept faith with the starters and that faith had been rewarded in droves.

Going back home to Mar Sara, the stadium was packed as suddenly the two teams from Arrosia were playing for the inside track to winning the group and securing a top seeded spot in the knockout rounds. If Sarzonia managed to extend their winning streak to four games over the Empire, it would give them the first seed but a Vanorian victory would mean as long as they won on the road on the last matchday against East Lithuania they would win their first ever group in the World Bowl. It was a cagey affair, both teams were looking to hold strong and prevent the other team from being able to hit plays, forcing the opposition to have to sustain drives to be able to get points, the result being the Empire leading seventeen to fourteen at the half as Fredrik Mundal kicked a forty-four yard field goal as the half expired to give the hosts the lead. Receiving the ball first in the second half, Schau would take the offense down inside the red zone but Sarzonia's defense would hold the team to yet another field goal from Mundal and a six point lead. It would be the only points the home team would score all quarter as Sarzonia rebounded from the earlier momentum shift and would score the next thirteen points as the game went into the fourth quarter.

Trailing by seven with four and a half minutes to go, Schau and company got the ball again on their own twenty-two and knew this needed to be the drive to get them a touchdown or the game was as good as over. The drive would start with a nine yard scamper from Alexander Østby on a draw, before four more an on inside zone run. Schau showed off his arm next as he hit Max Strömberg on an out route for fifteen yards and suddenly the team was at midfield. A few more runs from the backs got the team up on to Sarzonia's thirty-six before a play action caught the Sarzonia secondary cheating up allowing Nikolas Isaksen to get a step behind them and Schau delivered a perfect pass into the wide out's arm as he dashed the remaining four yards into the end zone with just over a minute left, tying the ball game up with the extra point after. The defense held the visitors from getting a first down and the squads went to overtime. Yet it would not be a long overtime period as Ole Bakker intercepted Cameron Stallworth's pass and went the distance for a walk-off pick six, as the Sabres produced one of the upsets of their short history in front of their home fans.

The celebrations can not last long though as the team has some work to do going to five win East Lithuania, the side coming off a road win themselves but having been eliminated from knockout contention. That means the hosts only have the chance to play spoiler for the Sabres but after everything the team has done to get themselves into this position, it would be a shame to see them not finish out the group stage strong and secure that group title with another class display. The offense continues to hum along and if Schau keeps this up, then the team could make quite the deep run into the knockouts, though the goal will obviously to get that first ever knockout win first. It starts though with finishing the unsettled business here in the group stage and a win to display the progress that this team has made in the little over a decade it has been a reality, to be a true contender here at the highest stages. Anything less than a victory and a group title would besmirch the effort that has been put in over the last decade, the last year to get this team to be able to compete at the highest level.

What To Do In MD 15 And Does It Even Matter?

For the Blue and Golds trying to retain their World Bowl title, the qualification stage was going pretty much flawlessly so far. Sure, their single loss was…aggravating, but the Cardenao national team was firing on all cylinders. You could make a case that they were one of the best qualifying teams along with host nation Ranoria, things were humming along nicely for a team lead by Bobby Dials. Two victories against Quebec and Shingoryeo, one of the best offensive records out there, a quarterback just drafted first overall and a head coach on top of the world, things were looking good. Which led to a bit of a problem…what to do about the final game against Sherpus?

It was a bit of a dead rubber in the sense that Team Nao had already won their group, they were three games ahead of Quebec, and as such there wasn’t a whole lot of need to run the starters out against the second to last team in the group. This is football for god’s sake, people get hurt playing this sport, and one could argue the Blue and Golds had been remarkably lucky on that front thus far in the tournament. So might as well give some of the starters the day off, right? Or at least most of it at any rate.

But then…there’s the first overall seed to play for. That tantalizing, “Hey, you’re #1!” to put a little wind under their sails heading into the stormy waters of the knockout rounds. That single seed could make a huge difference depending on the draw—thank the Gods Audioslavia isn’t participating in this tournament, that’s an automatic L for any Cardenaoan team. In that same vein, it’s a huge point of pride for both players and fans alike. With how huge football has gotten in Cardenao, not to mention how it’s seemingly becoming increasingly intertwined with diplomatic affairs, being the best in the world is huge. It’s crazy to write it out but we might as well take this moment to acknowledge the truth: after a lot of work, Cardenao is undeniably one of the best teams in the world. Defending champs, world #2, one of the best teams in qualifying…is this real? Real enough that resting your players seems worth it to keep them as fresh as possible.

With that being said, it’s not like this was a regular rotation game. No, this is the last game of the qualification period, that’s a helluva game to throw in players who’d only seen a few quarters of cumulative play. They were going to be rusty, they weren’t going to be ready to just slip right into a regular state of play, especially not in the World Bowl against the best of the best. Well, true it was Sherpus, the 53rd best, but still. Can’t just toss the backups in there for their first serious action of the tournament.

Ultimately, the decision is Steve Valentine’s to make and I doubt he reads this article for suggestions BUT, if I were in his shoes, I’d start Bobby Dials and let some backup players on offense accompany him so they can benefit from BD throwing to them. Bring out a backup QB in the second half and let all the starters rest….unless we’re in danger of not winning the game. We can’t lose the final game man, you need to send the team into the knockout stage with high morale.

Onwards to victory Blue and Golds, it’s been a helluva tournament so far.

Matchday 12: Crpostran 9-23 Chromatika

Lana Rhodes ran for 171 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, the stingy Iron Legion defense only conceded three field goals on the way to forcing three more turnovers, and Chromatika put together its fourth straight win in a row after the sweep at the hands of South Newlandia. Coincidentally, it's the fourth game in a row where Chromatika (7-5) has run for more than 200 yards, and the fourth game in a row where Sarai Gwenderyn has thrown for less than 250 yards. This new strategy - brought on by the injuries to the two starting guards - took a game against the Elephants to get going, but Curentino and the team has figured it out.

Rhodes was stellar after contact, getting 101 of her yards after first contact. Benjamin Merik added 52 yards on eight carries, and Rowena Hastroff showed her speed on eight catches out of the backfield as the running backs combined for forty catches.

When asked about the lack of production from the receivers, Alessandra Mio stated, "I don't really care as long as we're getting the win. I'm not the best at blocking, but I can at least be in the way - and we have the backs that can take care of the rest if you can buy them couple seconds. It's been fun to just see the defenses break down over time, and impose our will on them at the end of games."

Park Mi-Hyeon and Jere Rinaldi, the linebacker couple, combined for 22 tackles on the win, including three sacks; Lisa Bonsoon added on to her streak of forcing turnovers with an interception, and the new wrinkle on defense of having Bonsoon go wherever she wants continued to pay off.

Since the loss to South Newlandia, Chromatika has been playing with a sense of urgency - and now that they are two games over .500, it is obvious that a sense of confidence has started to return to the squad. It isn't swagger - the term "swagger" doesn't really meet the Chromatik vernacular - but a sense of quiet confidence and a belief that they will be able to perform in the way and manner that they are supposed to.

Chromatika will have one last chance to get a road victory at Darmen to improve to 3-4 - which is far better than the 1-4 record that they started off as. Is it bad that they went 1-3 against the other two top teams in the group? No, but at least they're getting better at taking care of the lower ranked teams now.

"It takes winning to get used to winning," admitted Sarai Gwenderyn, "And even the best teams can get out of habit when it comes to wins. We're glad to have gotten back to it before it was too late. Still a lot of work to be done, but the way that this team is starting to work together, I think we have a change to do something special anyways."

The turnaround is indeed real.

Matchday 13: Darmen 3-18 Chromatika

In a driving rainstorm in Darmen, the Darmeni had one goal in mind when facing the Iron Legion - shut down the ground game that had been rolling since the halfway mark of the tournament. Now that there is tape of the team since the change, teams were starting to adapt - and Darmen, to their credit, stacked the box with seven, eight, or even nine bodies.

The result was the first game since the change that the Iron Legion were held to less than 100 yards rushing, Rhodes getting only 61 on 20 carries with Merik adding 23 on six. With this commitment, though, the Iron Legion simply turned to the part of their offense that they hadn't had to use in a while - Sarai Gwenderyn.

It seems rather disrespectful to consider your star Quarterback as a secondary option on offense, but she had been just that during this win streak, never having more than 210 yards. In this game, with Darmen so committed to stopping the run, Gwenderyn reminded everyone why she was one of the best Quarterbacks in the world, going 23-of-29 for 251 yards. Yes, the team didn't score any touchdowns, but Gwenderyn showed that she can still make all the throws - in a driving rainstorm at that.

Instead, it was one Dwayne Markseon that proved his quality, making all six field goals in the rain. They varied in length - from 31, 34, 38, 42, 45, and 47 yards - and were from all over the field, with two each from the left, center, and right hash. Each time, the snap from Park Si-U was perfect, and the hold from Nellie Katt was sublime. Markseon's performance was reminiscent of the best kicking days from Sara McAllister. Markseon's day also ties the Chromatik record of most Field Goals in a game with six.

"He was automatic out there," stated Head Coach Misha Florentine of Markseon, "He never complained and never showed any hesitation. It's such an asset that we can count on our special teams to turn up in the harshest of situations."

Markseon turned the credit toward the other parts of the unit. "Si-U and Nellie are so good at setting the stage for me that all I have to do is follow through."

Chromatika only allowed the Darmeni offense to cross midfield once - right before halftime on a two-minute drill. Other than that, Darmen were held to less than 200 yards of offense in total. They didn't turn the ball over officially - only once on downs - but couldn't really get anything going.

"Our defense has been stellar since the South Newlandia game," commented Defensive Coordinator Kasen Harrowitz. Chromatika has conceded 81 points in the six games since the halfway point, with 59 of those points coming against Banija and South Newlandia - meaning in the four games other than that, they've conceded a grand total of 22.

All that, while only scoring six less points than the first seven games already?

Chromatika wraps up group play with a home date against Katzeburg, which is actually a revenge match.

With a win and a Banija loss, Chromatika cannot take second place in the group due to the head-to-head being 1-1 and Banija having a much higher overall point differential, unless they make up the 40 point differential. Even if Chromatika loses and Busoga Islands wins, Chromatika cannot finish lower than third place due to having the head-to-head sweep of Busoga Islands.

At least they've clinched the playoffs after such a bad start.

Return of the Fearsome Foursome:
Ranorian Defense Merciless As Krauts Clinch Group John Garrett

Image
Gideon Kearse celebrates after adding another sack to his lofty career totals

Maybe Ranoria's second stint in the World Bowl can hit paydirt a bit sooner than we anticipated.

With the knockout rounds coming back home in a couple weeks, the Krauts have clinched the group named after the greatest of our quarterbacks in John Garrett. In thirteen games, Ranoria's suffered just one defeat, and that came in a tight one-score game against the notorious Dragonflies. They swept HUElavia to the tune of a 23-7 victory and a 31-0 shutout - one of four goose eggs they've handed to their opponents in the group stage. Thrice more they've ceded just a field goal, and thrice more after that held their opponent to single digits.

That's all added up to what's easily been the best defense in the tournament so far, allowing just over 6.2 points per game. Only our groupmates Ko-oren are close, allowing just under 9 per outing. The most dominant defenses in the world have continued to be just that, bucking these trendy, heretical aerial attacks. For reference - no one else in the field is allowing under
Image
.

The defensive line has always been Ranoria's strongest position group, and Gideon Kearse is the obvious star. The all-time RFL sacks leader has posted 9 quarterback takedowns in the team's 13 games. Not quite is obscene NSCF 25 or World Bowl 46 tears, but he's played just over 50% of snaps while guys like Rolan Monroe and Julian Anneliese have spelled him and Abram Fairbanks.

"We want to keep our defensive veterans, in particular, fresh," said Krauts and Redwolves defensive coordinator Reinhardt Collier, "Gideon [Kearse], Konstantin [Vollmacht], and Abram [Fairbanks] are three of the best players in the history of their positions. But they're getting older. No reason not to let the young guys get plenty of time to cut their teeth out here. Anneliese, Monroe, and Specter are all stars in their own right, and they're only getting better."

And that's the truth - each of those three has racked up at least four sacks to this point, even with limited playing time, and Abram Fairbanks has a half dozen of his own. Hell, the inside guys are great too - Deandre Kelly and Gideon Kearse are both well-rounded with stunt type plays, and have worked incredibly well when running those concepts.

And the guys on the back end have capitalized - Akhello Volson has emerged as one of the top corners in the game, and guys like Najee Isidora at linebacker or Rodney Knight at free safety can say the same. Isidora's been vital for this defense, a "coach on the field" per Collier, able to get his defense adjusted, call plays when needed, or just go out and wreck your gameplan. And he's willing to listen - Obasi Chikelu has been a coach and mentor of his for over a decade now, and the linebackers coach for the Krauts' main job is to tweak what he needs to with the superstar.

So you've got a loaded defensive line. Superstars at each level. Throw in an aging but still high-level, hard hitting Sage Sterling, Charles Raleigh and Jared Ragnow being plus cornerbacks, and guys like Alder King, Raleigh Jones, and Bradley Bain filling out the linebacker core. Now you've got yourself a championship-caliber defense. Bain and King were both top-10 recruits out of high school, with King dominating as a collegiate in Cassadaigua.

"It's unbelievable how much talent we have on this team, especially on defense," quarterback and captain Vallienté Wagner-Young mused, "I know my job. Take care of the football, pick up first downs, and control the pace of the game. If we score ten points, we're probably coming out on top. And if we don't, well, for any of you who exclusively watch the RFL, you might want to tune into Banijan networks on Sundays to get a feel for what I can do." And he may be a bit too modest - in back-to-back games now, Wagner-Young has connected on a 40+ yard completion, one to Russell Farmer, one to Jannik Nadine.

Between that defense and one of the best quarterbacks in the world, there's not much more you could ask for - and with their world-best running back stable in Rylan Rodgers Jr and Ragnar Sampson, they're perfectly equipped to complement those beasts on the other side of the ball.

Golden Bowl Update

The GOLDEN BOWL
The lineal gridiron football championship

What is this?
The Golden Bowl is the lineal championship for national team level gridiron football in the NationStates universe. A lineal championship is a type of title commonly used in boxing, where the current champion defends their title in every match they play. The winner of a lineal championship contest will take the title to their next match - whether the current champion retains it, or the challenging team takes it. This creates a (theoretically) unbroken chain of champions: if you beat the man, you become the man.

First compiled by Drawkland during World Bowl XXXII, the Golden Bowl tracks the progress of the gridiron football world championship. If you've followed the exploits of the UWC thanks to Audioslavia and The Idiot Project, it's the same concept. For the record, the Golden Bowl was invented first. Not like it matters. Whether this Bowl physically exists in-character doesn't have an official answer. Feel free to ignore or recognize this unofficial title as you personally see fit.

The progression hasn't been updated since World Bowl XXXIX. For ease of use, a new spreadsheet was created to more accurately track each Golden Bowl match and statistics. This information, though some of it pre-existing, has been freshly rewritten for this post.

What are the rules of progression?
Any match involving the current Golden Bowl holder that's scorinated by the current cycle's World Bowl host qualifies as a Golden Bowl contest. This includes "friendly" or "exhibition" games, provided the current World Bowl host is the one that scorinates the game in some official capacity. Whichever team wins the game is credited with a Golden Bowl Win, whether it's the champion or challenger, and they bring the Golden Bowl to their next contest.

At this time, matches outside official World Bowl scheduling are not counted. Friendlies coordinated outside of the tournament cycle, i.e. on the discussion thread or elsewhere, do not count. The Silver Bowl (a short-lived Cup of Harmony equivalent to the World Bowl) is not counted as official in the Golden Bowl progression. Maybe if the Silver Bowl ran more than one edition, it'd be different. Regional gridiron tournaments are so few and far between that they aren't counted either. If the gridiron tournament calendar ever gets more involved, this may change in the future.

Unfortunately, nations will occasionally come into possession of the title, then not return for the next World Bowl cycle and Cease To Exist. This has happened 4 times to date. When this occurs, the title is stolen by our Golden Bowl operatives and given to the most recent actual World Bowl tournament champions. If any of these nations return to the World Bowl, they will introduce a secondary title into circulation. That title will be considered a separate progression until it unifies with the main progression, or falls out of circulation again. If a nation owns both the Golden Bowl and current World Bowl title and ceases to exist without returning to the tournament, the main progression title will be returned to the runner-up of the most recent championship game.

How did the progression begin?
The Golden Bowl was retroactively applied starting in World Bowl I and tracked through each historical edition to present day. The Golden Bowl was first given to Taeshan, as they had won the Gridiron Football World Championship a few months before the first World Bowl tournament. Some (mostly Taeshani citizens) called the GFWC tournament "World Bowl 0," though its title is not officially recognized as a World Bowl title. Regardless, it was an official enough tournament to consider Taeshan the current gridiron football champions at the time of World Bowl I.

Unfortunately for the Fightin' Falcons, they did not hold the Golden Bowl for very long. Their very first match was a pre-tournament friendly from a series of test matches scorinated by World Bowl I host Newmanistan in preparation for the tournament itself. As it was done by the host nation in a batch of games in the tournament thread, this exhibition was considered the first official Golden Bowl contest. In this game, Taeshan was flattened by Dancougar 17-0. The Black Wings of Dancougar were the first true World Bowl dynasty, dominating the early history of the tournament. In a way, Dancougar winning the first Golden Bowl match was quite symbolic. They won their first two group stage matches before losing 13-17 to Kura-Pelland, who proceeded to win 4 more matches as Golden Bowl incumbent. Kura-Pelland lost the Bowl when they next played Dancougar, a 20-13 win for the Black Wings in MD8. Dancougar proceeded to win out the rest of the tournament, winning the first World Bowl title and collecting a total of 10 Golden Bowl wins in the process.

When was the main progression broken?
Every time the current Golden Bowl holder qualifies for the World Bowl playoffs, it guarantees that the Golden Bowl will eventually end in the possession of whichever nation wins that cycle's championship. However, whenever the Golden Bowl holder is eliminated in the group stage, they run the risk of not returning to the tournament before ceasing to exist (or finding other spots to play), severing the Golden Bowl progression from future World Bowl cycles. This has currently happened four times, with four different nations. If these nations ever return to the tournament, they start a secondary progression to hopefully unify back with the main title.

The first nation to sever the progression was a little-known nation called Lanceo. Third-place finishers in Baptism of Iron II, they debuted during World Bowl VII in a group containing World Bowl VI champions and current Golden Bowl holders Dancougar. They lost to Dancougar twice, never scoring more than double digits either game, but Dancougar lost to Secristan 6-14 on MD8 of the group stage. Secristan won 17-0 over Iglesian Archipelago, but lost 13-14 to Lanceo on the final day of play. This brought Lanceo to 5-5, but that was barely enough for 3rd place in the group. They failed to qualify, though they did participate in the first (and only) edition of the Silver Bowl with zero media coverage. The nation of Lanceo ceased to exist one month and a day after they won the Golden Bowl title, and has never reanimated. The Golden Bowl was redistributed to World Bowl VII champions Fujisawan Territories starting in MD1 of World Bowl VIII.

The Golden Bowl went nearly twenty cycles without falling out of the tournament again. World Bowl XXVI saw defending champions Allamunnic States win their first nine games of the group stage, before taking a freak upset loss 3-14 against Nephara on the final day. Nephara, despite being quite active in international sport, was not a gridiron nation. Their mostly amateur squad received entry for numbers purposes, went 3-7, and thus did not return for another cycle, severing the progression. The Golden Bowl was delivered to World Bowl XXVI champions Ko-oren for MD1 of World Bowl XXVII. Nephara did return to the fold in World Bowl XXXII. Remarkably, they were even drawn into the same group as the current Golden Bowl holders, Abanhfleft. This was a prime setup for the first title reunification in Golden Bowl history. Instead, a hilarious back-and-forth string of upsets prevented Abanhfleft from taking Nephara's title, and they lost the Golden Bowl themselves. Abanhfleft regained the Golden Bowl on the final matchday, but Nephara's title had somehow managed to dodge unification the entire time and landed back in Nephara's hands by the final matchday. They never returned to the World Bowl, and have since ceased to exist.

It wasn't much later that the progression was severed again. This time it was World Bowl XXXIV, taken into the cycle by defending champions Kaboomlandia. They won their first five games of the group stage, but their MD6 rematch with the Royal Kingdom of Quebec proved costly. Quebec won 24-14, possessing the Bowl for the second time in their history. They won their next two games before inexplicably losing 0-7 to unranked Argentinistan, who lost to Space 13-30 on the final matchday. At 3-7, Space missed the playoffs, and though they competed in the World Bowl for several cycles over the years, they did not return for World Bowl XXXV. The title was therefore given to World Bowl XXXIV champions Taeshan at the start of World Bowl XXXV. Space did return a few cycles later in World Bowl XXXVIII, but like Nephara's return, their secondary progression somehow landed back in Space's hands in time for the end of the group stage. Once again, Space missed the playoffs, but they would return once more. Their last World Bowl appearance was World Bowl XL, and this proved to be pivotal. Space lost 10-30 to Ranoria on the first matchday, and Ranoria mercifully went 10-0 in the group stage without a single upset. This brought the "Space Bowl" into the World Bowl XL playoffs, where Ranoria surrendered the title 3-7 to Cassadaigua in the semifinals. This set up a World Bowl championship against main Golden Bowl holders Banija and secondary progression holders Cassadaigua. The Fillies won 6-3, performing the first-ever title reunification in the process.

Ranoria, despite their heroic run to return a secondary progression to the main line, removed a little good will a few cycles later. As defending champions going into World Bowl XLIII, they did not have a flawless group stage run. After scoring 119 points through the first three games, Ranoria was shut out by Abanhfleft, losing the Bowl in a 0-7 contest. Abanhfleft lost to HUElavia two games later, who immediately lost to Ranoria in MD7. It seemed like all was right, but Ranoria somehow lost to The Cordian Isles 15-26 on the final matchday. At 4-6, The Cordian Isles had no chance at making the playoffs, and never returned to World Bowl play despite participating in other international sports tournaments. They have since ceased to exist.

What is the current Golden Bowl status?
World Bowl XLIX featured 6 possession changes, which isn't the most in one tournament (12, WB XVI), but serves as the typical high water mark for more chaotic World Bowls. Cardenao were the champions of World Bowl XLIX, and they came into possession of the Golden Bowl in the final, where they defeated incumbent holders Banija 23-20 in overtime. They came into World Bowl L with great momentum, winning 10 straight games in their first-ever possession of the Golden Bowl. Their streak ended there, with a 49-34 loss to the United States of Nova Calania, also touching the Golden Bowl for the first time. Ten games isn't the longest streak on record, but it does tie Cardenao for the fifth-longest Golden Bowl win streak (alongside Allamunnic States and Royal Kingdom of Quebec, good company).

Current Golden Bowl Holders: United States of Nova Calania (1st possession, 4-game streak, 4 total wins)

Nova Calania have put together a nice win streak in their first carry, including an impressive 19-18 win over Quebec and Shingoryeo. Their last match of the group stage is a home game against Pafi. This is a dangerous match, as Pafi are already eliminated from playoff contention. If Nova Calania lose in the final matchday and Pafi don't return for World Bowl LI, we may suffer another severed progression. That being said, if Nova Calania do win their final game of the group stage, they are virtually guaranteed to make the playoffs, and the Golden Bowl will eventually land in the hands of whichever nation wins the World Bowl L championship.

Who are the current record holders?
This may be seen as a little bit of self=indulgence, but it's not our fault. Don't hate the player, hate the game. These are the current "main" records we're tracking, though more may be added later. Also included is the current Top 19 in total Golden Bowl wins. We'd do the Top 20, but there's a 4-way tie for 20th. Plus this list only includes nations with double-digit wins, which seems like a fair spot to cut off.

Most Total Golden Bowl Wins: Drawkland (7 total carries, 44 total wins)

*Allamunnic States is now known as Terefuxe. Only 3 of their total wins were earned after the name change, for the record. If they carry the Bowl again, we'll update the name.
**Royal Kingdom of Quebec is now known as Quebec and Shingoryeo. However, despite multiple chances, Quebec and Shingoryeo has not won a Golden Bowl contest since the name change.

More facts and fun figures about the Golden Bowl, including a full list of champions, will be posted at a later date. This is to serve as a much-needed update and primer for those who are unfamiliar with the concept. Also, the logo is shamelessly ripped from the Topps All-Star Rookie icon used on baseball cards, with the label changed.

Pregame, one hour before kickoff, Busoga Islands v. Banija

The tensions for this game were high, to say the very least. Technically, the stakes were fairly low- Banija had punched their ticket to the next round, and thanks to the failure of the Busoga Islands to earn a win in the Elephant Valley, they were likely out of the tournament. Earning the best fourth place spot was possible, from a technical point of view, but the chances were low- and so many Busogans knew that their maiden entry into the World Bowl was going to end tonight.

But they didn't care about that. Not right at this moment, anyways.

To the naked eye, the stakes were low. A team that was already advancing, against a team that was more than likely eliminated. Although, of course, the Busogans had a mathematical chance. But to the trained eye, the stakes of this matchup were immense. It doesn't take a huge dive into the history of these nations to figure out why this particular match means so much. Even without the history, you can go straight back to their previous matchup, on Matchday 7 in Jinja City. A 27-24 bonanza that saw an ejection on the 3rd play of the game, and the slimmest of slim wins for the Banijans.

And if you didn't want to look that far back? Just hear the players talk about.

"Beating the Busogans- it's simply what we're expected to do." Said Banijan HB Zamandi Ayana. "Despite whatever's been going on in recent years in the NSCF, and the World Cup and what not- the Busogans are simply not even a fraction of what we are as a sporting nation. And, most importantly, as a gridiron nation specifically. It times for us to put those dudes in their place- and by the power of Jehovah himself, we're going to show them the full power and skill of the Serpent Eagles in this sport. The gap is wider than they think- and more importantly, we're gonna show those dudes that they aren't ever catching up."

And as for the Busogans, it was their WR1, Mohammed Al-Abir, who said it best ."Look- throw out records, throw out stakes, throw out any permutations for the next round- this is freaking Banija v. Busoga." Al-Abir told reporters. "Those Banijans need to be taught basic fucking respect. We were basically less than 5 yards away from shocking them in Jinja City- in front of the home fans, we're winning this shit. Yeah, that's right- print it front page, back page, side page. We're beating Banija, and I don't give a damn who sees this quote."

And so, with the hype growing quickly around the game, the stadium was basically full about an hour prior to kickoff- a rare ,if not impossible, accomplishment around these parts. THAT'S how big the game was.

And so, before the game, Say Onan, Busoga's center, was walking onto the field for his last part of the warmups. And he saw Zelotes Aero, Banija's 35 year old starting OLB. And Aero was disrespecting the Islanders- he was clearly stomping on the midfield logo. And Onan, Busoga's starting center, saw this- and it was on.

"Ey! Banijan bastard!" Onan yelled. "Get off our damn logo!" And Aero looked up, looked Onan straight in the eye- and ignored him. At that point, Onan was almost running. "You disgraceful little of-" And what exactly Onan would say, the world might not know. It was a chaotic fight- a near brawl ahead of their second matchup. Onan getting kicked out of the game an hour before kickoff is diabolical- but if he was brawling, a decision must be made.

Could the Busogans stun the world and get a huge upset W over Banija on the final day of group play?

And that's a wrap on the group stage! This is your cutoff speaking.

Remember, even if your team did bad, you're not allowed to give up. Uh, no puns today. I'm on a kick, so have I Will Not Bow while we do the thing.
