He glanced out of one of the specious room’s large windows. Before him the Avenida Luca Sargo de Santa stretched off into the distance. Cars could be seen pulling into or away from the various government buildings and embassies on either side of the wide boulevard. The fountains in the centre fired water up into a Soluca morning, which was feeling unusually crisp for that time of year. In the Presidential Palace’s courtyard soldiers in ceremonial uniform marched their patrol routes, distinctly unceremonious weapons on their shoulders. Outside the fence passers-by evaded the small number of tourists that had gathered. It was a normal scene. He wondered how events transpiring in the conference room would affect ‘normal’ in the future.

‘So let me get this right in my mind.’ President Gregorio Emparán turned back to his ministers. ‘Any Congressman, excuse me, Congressperson can introduce a bill?’

‘Yes.’ Alana Velázquez, Executive Assistant to the President, continued with her briefing. ‘Although that bill will then be passed through to the committee stage for study and debate. It would then have to win a two thirds vote in that committee to advance to the floor stage for analysis and debate by the full congress.’

‘And then another vote?’

‘After much anticipated wrangling, amending and discussion, yes. And with a three quarters majority that bill be ready to become law. Pending the seal of approval from the Office of the President, of course.’

‘Let’s not lose sight of that small detail. And the Grand Congress will only have jurisdiction over issues of domestic policy. Foreign policy is also the sole purview of the Office of the President. As is the right of the veto. Which reminds me, I need to get some stamps made. Committees, sub-committees, debates, jockeying for influence. Nothing is ever going to get achieved. Sounds like democracy in action to me. Well done Alana.’

‘Thank you, sir.’

‘But it’s still, at heart, a numbers game. How are the projections looking?’

‘They’re looking very healthy.’ Alana touched a button and charts and numbers filled the screen that dominated one wall. ‘United Sargossa are currently predicted to potentially take as many as 650 of the available seats. Surpassing even our own expectations. The Social Democrats are expected to comfortably form the next largest bloc. After that it becomes something of a mess.’

‘Verde, they’re the environmentalists, right? I thought my environmental credentials were pretty good actually.’

‘They don’t think you go far enough.’

‘Charming. What’s Reconquista?’

‘Ultra-nationalists. They’re vehemently opposed to the “liberalisation” seen across the nation in the last two decades. They think you’ve gone too far.’

‘Too much liberty. This job is quite the wild ride. What would they prefer, perpetual martial law?’

‘Actually, I think they might.’

‘The day’s still young. Who are our other runners and riders?’

‘The Movement For Change are largely aligned with the Social Democrats in their vision but don’t think Trucco is the man to deliver. They think he’s too tainted by his proximity to the regime. Libertad don’t think either group goes far enough. Sargossan Dawn would very much like you to deport anyone who isn’t a native. Although their definition of “native” doesn’t include those of aboriginal native descent. First Peoples seek to defend the rights of those of aboriginal native descent for that very reason. The separatist movements in Goza and Santazuela do what they say on the tin. As does the Pan-Rushmori Party. The Agricultural Workers Alliance has found momentum in, you guessed it, agricultural areas. And the Communist Party of Sargossa is presumably a statistical anomaly.

‘What a time to be alive. But with sixty something percent of the Congress made up of our people it sounds like we’re on for business as usual. And I’m sure we can win around enough tree huggers, farmers and fascists to keep the status quo going for some time to come. Thank you Alana, that’ll do for now.’

The opening fare of the Immortal's Accords Gala had come and gone. For our young immortals, it was time for the main event.

At every gala, those new entries to the Accords were introduced and congratulated in front of the rest of the congregation. Most times there were no new members, as you could imagine that successfully attaining immortality happens less frequently than every fifty years. As such, introducing new immortals to the club was always a treat. The subsequent hazing was even more entertaining, for the old guard at least.

The five Drawkians stood, a little nervously, in the wings of the small auditorium in the Lodge. Nicole, Cam, Sarah, Jack, and Leo stood in line, in the order that the Drawkionel Iarocav had instructed a couple minutes prior.

"You don't have to give a speech," he promised, "but be aware that people in the audience will ask for one. If you crack under peer pressure, start preparing now."

Iarocav now stood on the stage, holding a small microphone with a wooden casing. He was giving the introduction for the ceremony, which the five waiting offstage were ignoring. They were told that the ceremony was being recorded anyway, so it wasn't a huge deal.

"Are you going to speak?" Sarah turned to regard Jack behind her. "Need to know if I have to find earplugs real quick."

"You kidding?" Jack asked, seemingly sincere despite the sarcastic tone. "I'm dedicating this to my boy Riley. Gone but never forgotten."

"That's admirable, really." Sarah tried her hardest to not say something rude. "Just don't ramble for six hours, please. I feel like Riley would object to that."

"Don't worry, I brought a really large cane to yank him off the stage if necessary," Leo added with a grin. Their conversation was cut short with a shush from Nicole in the front of the line.

The attention of the group was drawn back to the stage, where Iarocav beckoned Ellzidan to join him on stage. The duo gave a couple smart remarks to each other to loosen up the crowd, but then it was time for the ceremony to really begin.

"Our first new immortal hails from Kayo, plying her trade as a star soccer defender across the multiverse in Rushmore. She's since returned to our great shores, and still dominates turf across Drawkland playing for the Kayo Queens. She was the leader of this group that undertook the Quest to TiSoFaH and returned successfully. Please welcome Nicole Warren, the Undying."

The moment Iarocav finished speaking, Nicole dutifully walked forward, her forest green dress highlighting her red hair the moment she entered the spotlight of the stage. She remembered the smile as the applause began, taking her mark behind the lectern at center stage. The applause continued for awhile, but quickly died down as some audience members hooted for a speech.

"Thank you. Thank you so much," Nicole started, still a little nervous. She didn't have anything prepared, but she didn't need to. "I will be brief here. I intended to take this Quest alone, years ago. My friends insisted that they tag along, and at first, I was worried and upset about it. Yet, I wouldn't be standing here before you without their help. Some of them you will meet here in a few minutes, others are elsewhere in this great place, and others are no longer with us. To all of them, thank you. I hope that I will do all of you proud." With that, Nicole stepped back from the lectern, gave a sincere hug to Ellzidan standing to her left, and walked off the stage.

The rest of the ceremony proceeded similarly, with Ellzidan announcing Cam and Sarah. Neither of them had a lot to say besides a few thank-yous, to the disappointment of some of the crowd.

"Our next immortal was born in Quinnaber, the birthplace of gridiron football in Drawkland. This turned out to be quite the coincidence, as he's become one of the most feared running backs in gridiron history, not just here, but across the multiverse as part of the Grid Corps. Now he continues to play as a member of the Metropolon Underrunners. He was another member of this party that took the Quest together, and he stands before us, triumphant. Please welcome Jack Hoy, the Undying."

Jack jogged onto the stage, waving and grinning widely like he was coming out of the tunnel on gameday. He was still wearing his outrageous outfit from earlier, something that somebody with braces would call "drip." He eagerly took his place at the front, continuing to wave and nod with satisfaction at the applause. As the clapping died down and the requests for a speech echoed through the hall, the smile slowly melted off his face, and he grew almost somber behind the lectern. Almost tentatively, he began.

"Thank you, ladies, gentlemen, and various magical entities. I stand before you today as a triumphant man. Some could say that this is the pinnacle of a lifetime. I have everything that any person would want. I've won awards. I've won championships. I've won recognition and respect the worlds over. And now, I'm here without the shackles of mortality weighing me down any further. All of this I have, and yet ... I feel almost empty inside.

"When I decided to embark on this Quest, I had the mindset of a kid, or at least an immature young man. Perhaps I still do. Still, I wanted to go down this road for the chance at the ultimate glory, and to help some friends along the way. At the time, it seemed like a good idea. As I stand here, in this place, in front of this company, one could say it was a good idea, in the long run. I'm sure you could guess, this was done with great sacrifice.

"I lost my friend in that wretched maze. A brother. His name was Riley Hoyt, and though we weren't related by blood, I loved that man with all my heart. I still do. I love him like I love all my teammates, an intense bond of brotherhood and trust that is hard to replicate. We lost others in that maze too. Katie Madison, Allison Summers. And though I didn't know them quite as well, they were tremendous athletes and good people. It's a damn shame that they aren't also waiting backstage to speak right this moment.

"Ironically, I think I aged a great deal in this experience, though my body no longer fades like it was before our journey. For the first time in my life, I was faced with something I truly couldn't overcome. I suppose when you play a game for a living, it always feels like you can overcome the odds, if you're just given the opportunity. In this Quest, I discovered that even when given the chance, I can't always win. I can't always come out on top. And my dear friend had to pay the ultimate price for me to learn that lesson. It is one that I will never forget.

"Now I stand on the precipice of an even greater challenge, one that I never expected to be facing. I'm sure you all can relate to that feeling. Now I have to pick up the pieces of my life and figure out what to do next. At least there's one big thing I don't have to worry about. For that, I thank everyone who got me to this point. All the people who've helped me become the best football player on the planet, to start. For the Quest, Nicole and her meticulous planning. Those that helped Nicole put this together. Everybody in our party, BIG shoutout to Jaxon Madison, he's somewhere in here right now. My good friend Leo Cross, who you will soon meet. And most of all, my brother Riley. Without his sacrifice, I wouldn't be here.

"I just hope that, one day, I can make him proud. I hope that one day I can justify the life he left behind, and honor his memory with my own eternity." Jack gave a longer pause than usual, taking care to wipe the edges of his eyes, which were starting to brim up a bit. After a deep sigh to collect himself, he pressed on for a few more sentences. "Thank you for having me. I look forward to meeting all of you."

With that, he gave a firm handshake to both Drawkionels behind him, and jogged off stage as swiftly as he'd entered. Leo was waiting immediately offstage and wrapped Jack in a huge bear hug without a word.

"You're a tough act to follow," Leo managed to spit out, preparing to take the stage in a few seconds. Jack just nodded with a knowing smile.

Leo had only a few words to say, especially because Jack had already expressed most of them. His moment on stage was brief, and when he passed the side curtains, this part of the ceremony was over. There were a few awards to give out, as the Drawkionels liked to recognize achievements and accolades earned by notable immortals since the last meeting of the Accords. The new immortals, now officially considered part of the club, made their way to the audience to sit out the remainder of the event. The "hard" part was over.

The next big item on the itinerary was the banquet, which was itself an extension of the earlier recognition ceremony. This is an event that pretty much every immortal that came to the gala attended. After all, a luxurious and all-expense-paid dinner is hard to pass up. Also there was an open bar for those that showed their face at dinner, so that was another advantage.

As Nicole and Sarah found earlier, all five of the new immortals were sat at the table in the front of the room. They would be dining alongside the Drawkionels and a few other high-profile guests, and the location at the end of the table provided a great opportunity for older members of the Accords to come by and introduce themselves to the newbies, who were held captive in their chairs by societal convention.

Dinner was delicious, of course. It was a seven-course meal (as is the custom), and consisted of traditional Ellzidanian food. It was fresh, gamey, and delicious. Between courses, a small queue of older guests wandered their way to the front of the room to meet and congratulate the new immortals. The cheese course typically came after the main entree, and this is when the Elite Eleven rose in sync and walked in line to the front of the hall.

This was less of a meet-and-greet and more of a hello between old friends, more or less. Besides Jaxon and a couple others, most of the Elite didn't talk to or see Nicole or her trio often. The congratulations were heartfelt, and the greetings to the Grid Corps guys Jack and Leo were also genuine, since they didn't have a history of interacting with the Elite.

"After this party," Jack said with a trademark grin, "maybe you'll want to hang out with us a little more often."

At the end of the Elite line were the more estranged of the group, Septimus Xander and Mike Rodney. Would it have been smarter to be in the middle of the clump and therefore be less noticeable? Almost certainly, but that level of strategy wasn't getting past the innate want to avoid the situation as much as possible. Jaxon said they rode as a group though, so they had no choice. Septimus had a fine time shaking the hands of everyone and saying hello. Ellzidan was sitting conspicuously at the other end of the table, but Septimus was careful to avoid eye contact at all costs. Things went smoothly. For Mike, it was a little different. He was the one who was, unfortunately, at the crux of this mess. Though he tried his best to remain in the common greeting routine with Cam and Sarah, he couldn't hold it in when he got to Nicole.

"Hey. Congratulations. I'm glad to see you here." Mike offered his hand for a simple handshake.

"You've already offered congratulations once, you don't need to do it again." Nicole replied coldly, but she did accept the shake. "And it looks like you'd rather be doing anything else than seeing me here."

"I mean it. I do." Mike insisted. "Seeing you here is a great relief. I'd rather you be here than rotting in some subterranean trench on that wretched world."

Nicole dipped her head in acknowledgement, but she said nothing. Her eyes did their best to avoid seeing any part of Mike before her.

"Listen ..." Mike tried to bite his tongue, but he just couldn't. "I hate this. I know that I wronged you, but I don't want to live like this forever. It sucks. It's terrible. And if you don't feel the same way, that's okay. It's just ... we're going to see each other a lot over the coming years. Neither of us are going away anytime soon. And I think this would be easier for both of us if we can at least be friends."

Cam and Sarah were trying their best to look like they weren't listening. Cam started picking at her cuticles, and Sarah started burying another glass of wine. Nicole shot a quick glance to both of them and got nothing in return. Her eyes moved back and forth along the table as she chewed on Mike's words.

"We'll see." Nicole said, breaking the awkward pause. She looked back up to Mike, finally making eye contact.

"Thanks." Mike managed to respond after a moment. He nodded slightly, took a deep breath, and shoved his hands into his pockets. "Congrats again, you three. See you around." He slowly sidestepped around Nicole's chair to say hello to Jack and Leo, the former of which was in the middle of giving Roger Apollo some tips for playing running back.

Nicole looked back over at Cam and Sarah, who were now a little more receptive. They said nothing, but Cam gave a hopeful shrug.

"I have to get a refill," Sarah said after a moment. As soon as she moved her chair out to stand, she felt a hand on her shoulder.

"Please, stay here." It was Iarocav, standing at the end of the table with a small platter in his hand. "You're the guests of honor, I insist. What can I get for you?"

"Uh, some of that Valley Red," Sarah stuttered. "The local stuff."

"Excellent choice." Iarocav nodded with approval. "Anything for the rest of you?"

Nicole and Cam shook their heads.

"Fine by me. If I may ..." Iarocav almost turned to go the bar, but stopped himself. "Let me remind you, as an immortal, that forever is a long time. As a world leader, I can also tell you that a lot of strife can be avoided with a little talking. We were given the ability to speak as a gift. Don't be afraid to use it. Valley Red, right?"

Sarah nodded again, and Iarocav responded with a thumbs-up. He turned to the bar without another word.

Immediately after the banquet, a small ball was held in other room of the Lodge. Many immortals preferred to nap off their meal or wander about, but some still treasured the old-fashioned social value of a good dance. This room was dressed up as pretty as the rest, but it was a more "intimate" space that clearly anticipated the rather low foot traffic this event generated. The center of the room was cleared to create the dance floor, with a horseshoe of tables and chairs surrounding the floor for those in attendance to rest and/or drink. One end of the floor featured the stage, another wooden construction. The sound was either amplified with magic or with cleverly-disguised electronics, it was hard to tell. Either way the entertainment would be provided with a live band.

It was made clear to Nicole and Cam that attending the dance was not necessary. Still, they felt like it would be fun to attend. As Nicole had put it, it was their first time attending: once they'd done everything at least one time, they'd feel better about skipping things on the next go-rounds. Sarah was the least fond of dancing among the trio, but even she agreed noncommittally to show her face.

This necessitated a change in wardrobe, but the girls were prepared. They arrived in dresses with similar style but differing colors, drawing applause from the assembled immortals who noticed their entrance and recognized them from the earlier ceremony. They bowed and curtsied gracefully, which seemed to sate the oldheads. Cam had her head on a swivel, and she noticed Jaxon Madison fairly quickly. He was sitting alone at one of the large circular tables surrounding the dance floor.

"Hey there!" Cam called out with enthusiasm, and Jaxon stood to greet the three girls.

"Are the rest of the Elite coming?" Nicole asked, as nonchalantly as she could manage. Surely she had no ulterior motive in asking.

"As far as I'm aware, no." Jaxon shrugged. "The guys usually save the dancing for the more salacious afterparties rather than the stuffy main event, or so they say. I heard that Ross and Eli may show their faces for a bit. Maybe some others, I don't know."

"How long are we gonna stay here then?" Sarah sighed. "I don't have anybody to dance with. I've got half a mind to find Jack because even that would be better than trying to dance with some of these centuries-old geezers."

"Don't knock it till you try it," Jaxon winked, earning some groans from the girls. "Anyway, at least stay for a couple songs. There's this band comprised of a few immortals, the name is 'Forever and a Day.' They always play the music at the dances, and they're really good. They've got an insanely huge repertoire, too. If you request any song you know they can probably play it. EXCEPT Juve-Pop. Do not request any Juve-Pop songs. They get really mad."

"I guess we could dance together, eh Nicole?" Sarah shifted a side-eye glance to Nicole, who shrugged in return.

"Sounds good to me. When does the band go on, Jaxon?" Nicole asked.

"Should be any minute now," Jaxon replied, taking a look at his watch. The house lights dimmed ever-so-slightly, and Jaxon nodded. "There it is."

The music began, with the strangely-dressed and oddly-instrumented group ripping into a delightfully classical tune. It sounded like it was pulled out of the original set of a thousand-year-old pub, and it was just as heart-pumping as a wholly electronic number that you'd expect to hear in a nightclub tomorrow night. It wasn't long before a majority of the guests in the room were dancing wildly on the floor. Most of them seemed to be doing a specific dance, which Jaxon quickly tried to teach to the trio.

"This is called 'The Old Crawl.' It's a classic!"

As the night went on, the band played a variety of tunes as Jaxon predicted. As a joke, Cam came up to the stage and requested a song that she had slow-danced to back at her high school prom, though she didn't expect them to know it. To her surprise, they actually did start into the exact song she asked for, though the nearly medieval instrumentation was a little weirder than she was used to. As they launched into the opening chords, Cam slowly sidled up to Jaxon, who was enjoying some water at the table at the time.

"Hey ... may I have this dance?" Cam asked tentatively.

"I don't see why not," Jaxon replied with a smile. He stood up confidently, and offered his hand to Cam, which she accepted gladly.

The pair made their way to the floor as the band broke into the first verse. Jaxon had his arm draped around Cam, their hands clasped to one side. Together, they slowly worked through a little dance, stepping around at the edge of the floor and enjoying each other's company.

As the song played, Mike Rodney quietly walked into the room, still wearing his dress suit from earlier. He heard the music playing, saw Jaxon and Cam dancing on the floor, and chuckled to himself. The laugh stopped abruptly when he saw the back of Nicole's head sitting at a table on the edge of the floor. She was sitting next to Sarah, the both of them sipping at drinks and having a pleasant conversation together.

Mike took a few more steps into the room, getting a little bit closer to the table. He saw Nicole, the back of her head, her braided red hair hanging nicely down past her shoulders. In an instant, a million images flashed through his head. Nicole on the Elite's plane, so many years ago. Nicole, hiking a trail a couple hours out from Sadeg. Nicole, running out of the tunnel at a Queens home game. Nicole, in a chair at a lounge in the Elite's Complex, reading an article on her phone. Nicole, looking away mischievously, her hair coming undone.

It was too much. Mike was stopped dead in his tracks, shaking his head to try and clear it all away. He sent a hand to straighten his hair and let out a sharp breath. Before he could be seen, he turned and walked quickly out of the hall, trying to find the place serving drinks and/or member of the Elite, which was probably the same location.

Meanwhile, the song was going through the final chorus, past the bridge, coming towards the final notes. Cam looked up towards Jaxon, with an odd and almost anxious look in her eyes. Jaxon returned the look and tried to smile, but it didn't come out just right. Cam leaned forward a little bit, and Jaxon used his arm to press her shoulders close to him, putting her chin on the crook of his shoulder. It was a hug, and Cam returned it warmly, but something didn't feel quite right.

The song was over, though, and the band had just shot off into a rock and roll classic with little thought for the moment. The couple pulled away from the embrace, Cam curtsying and Jaxon bowing as a thanks for the dance. Cam was glad it was dark, because she didn't want him to see her blush. Jaxon was glad for the moment to wipe the sweat off the back of his neck. He carefully slipped an arm around Cam's back and led her off the floor back to the table. Nicole and Sarah were in the middle of an argument about defensive tactics, but they paused to cheekily clap at Cam and Jaxon as they took their seats.

The rest of the night went fine, but the gala had only just begun.

The Promised Land: A Journey Through Saterun Football
By Kalvin Hsemer

Part 3, Chapter 3: The Future is Now

First, let me address something. My travels for this part of the book are not being recorded in chronological order. Due to the amount of teams and its importance, the DIC finishes the latest of all the Taças. The earliest finisher, and our next stop, is the Copa Capital.

Anasb absolutely loves to name all things related to it "Capital" in some way. Anasb is the third historic capital of the country, after Tsear and Daxler, and was established as such after the al-Shabif (a state in Saterun) ruling house won the Second Saterun Civil War. Even 5 generations after the war, it is still trying to cement its power. This even carries over into football. Real Anasb and Anasb FC are well-funded and well-supported, and regularly finish high up the A. Liga table. This idea of image through football is present in the Taça too. Once the Copa Capital administrative body realized it could never compete with the level of the DIC, it figured out another way to gain publicity and become an important part of Taça football. And, safe to say, it worked.

I'd like to start off with a fact. Currently, the two Anasb clubs have a combined total of 8 first-team starters that were found through the Copa Capital. Furthermore, the A. Liga as a whole has 24 players that came directly from Copa Capital teams. These numbers are an easy point of reference. The DIC, for example, has only produced 2 players for Daxler AFC and 9 for the whole league. The Copa Capital has clearly found its niche. It excels at producing talent and fostering player growth. If you are prospective A. Liga club, the Copa Capital likely has at least three suitable players for you right now. This process is, of course, incredibly complex, and there are a variety of other factors that will not be discussed in this chapter, but I think I've identified a few of the most important ones. If you're ready, join me on a journey through Saterun's elite talent center, the Copa Capital.

An incredibly important part of Anasb's reputation for fostering the best talent in the country is the courage to break from tradition and experiment. One example is the currently-named (for sponsorship purposes) Techzel Super Draft. The Super Draft is a bit of a misleading name, however. It is not a free-signing party for top A. Liga clubs. Rather, at the end of the Copa Capital, any teams that participated in the competition can send some of their top players to the Super Draft as a sort of talent scout. It is mainly a way for the top players of the Copa Capital to get noticed by A. Liga clubs. Once the players have been approached, the two clubs work out a transfer agreement. Free agents also attend this meeting, and sometimes do get signed. It is frequented by players that got too good for the Copa Capital and left their clubs because of wage disputes.

As always, talking to the people that run the events and systems is the best way to understand them. I managed to get an breif interveiw with Martha Fjoulsson, the Player Development Head of the Anasb City Football Commision, the organization that runs the Copa Capital. Something that immidiatly struck me was her professionalism. I was welcomed into her office at once, and settled by the staff with great care. She herself appeared within a minute of my arrival, fully engaged. All of this, mind you, with the Super Draft less than two days away.

Our conversation qiuckly turned to the draft itself. Fjoulsson was, understandibly, a bit passionate about the subject. It was the biggest event the Anasb City Football Commision oversaw, and, as the PLayer Development Head, she was a key part of it. In fact, this upcoming Super Draft would be her 15th. "It's incredibly important for player pathways. Of the current 24 players out in the A. Liga that came from the Copa Capital, 19 were identified and signed at the Super Draft." And that's what the Copa Capital is all about: player pathways. Of course, there are players that will spend their whole careers in the Copa Capital, but it is primarily geared towards advancing the player's career to DIC or Tsear City Football Competition. It's a long-term plan, says Fjoulsson. "We are trying to grow the Copa Capital's reputation by exporting most of Saterun's young talent. Hopefully, we will eventually reach the stage were young players would rather stay here than make the move to the DIC, but first we need to grow reputation and earn money for the clubs."

After my discussion with Fjoulsson, I decided to head down to the Highlands West neighborhood of Anasb, where the player development is particularly strong. Here, the ACFC has invested the most money in sports infrastructure. Currently, there are five sports complexes built by the ACFC in this neighborhood alone. They are open from 6 am to 5 pm. And the ACFC has been paid back. Alojzy Addams, of Real Anasb and the national team, grew up here. So did many of the Copa Capital's finest players. As I walk down the street, I notice a youth game about to start nearby. Upon walking up to it, I learn by the ref uniforms that it's a U16's match.

This setting served as a perfect end to my jouney here in Anasb. As the young players raced up and down the sidelines, I was reminded of what local fottball is all about. Every person in the crowd had a personal connection with one of the players. The match was civil, but you could tell that these teams had met before. Things almost reached a boiling point right before halftime, but the exictement never erupted into violence. All in all, a very different experience from the DIC final. I think that this match really embodied what the Copa Capital is about. It's about fostering the next generation of Saterun players, and giving every young player the chance to shine. Both the DIC and Copa Capital are neccesary, in very different ways. The Tsear City Football Competiton combines them both.

The Battles Will Continue

Postby Kimi-Suomi » Mon Feb 20, 2023 3:14 pm

After back-to-back wins kept us in the hunt, the Huuhkajat of Kimi-Suomi knew that were in a täysi sota and everyone knew things were only going to get bloodier from here on out. With the group being this tight after 10 matchdays, you got the feeling that maybe we will not exactly know our Top 3 until the final day itself...but that only meant more drama for the gods to enjoy amongst themselves. Esko Laaksonen was in full preparation mode and didn't really want to say much before things really got bloody, but he knew that every point was going to fucking matter and that was all he really needed.

Pesä would be hosting 3 home games on the trot, a chance to seriously consolidate The Nest as one of the key factors in this whole group stage, with 2nd-placed Pyazhnaya the first to come along. Everyone knew that this was a big game for both teams' group stage hopes and so, Pesä was absolutely packed and rocking for the whole day. Pyazhnaya were initially hungry for the game and took the lead in the 26th minute through Danila Mukhametshin, but we would bounce back before half time thanks to Valtteri Nordström. Then the 2nd half arrived, Maria Tuominen and Jyrki Bottas entered proceedings and everything changed just like that. Maria would end up assisting Bottas twice while Annina Tuominen also got involved with a superb outside the box screamer that compounded the misery placed on poor Maksimilian Chupov. That meant that this important clash ended in a 4-1 statement by the Huuhkajat and now, we could certainly feel the thunder in our veins as we moved up to 4th.

Then the 1-win Uusi Portlandin Tasavalta (New Portland Republic) came to town and...yeah, this one was quite interesting. NPR (or UPT) actually put up a good fight in this game against a Huuhkajat side that allowed themselves to take things easy for a little while and just let the gam ebb and flow. We still put in the effort to claim a 2-0 win thanks to a simple brace from Tero Salo and in the end, that was all we needed to get over the line. It was that simple, nothing else needs to be added.

We remain in P4, 1 point behind the Top 3 and 4 points off the lead, and you could certainly feel the tension climbing in the air. We will look for revenge when Pot 2 and 2nd place Huayramarca complete the triple threat before we head off Sargossa to face the group leading Corsairs. We will play the Top 2 back to back. It sounds tough as balls...but we've been through worse before.

A unified Afanc Strait football team... what would it look like, and is it the right solution?

Anybody with half a brain in the Confederacy of the Afanc Strait can tell that New Gelderland is doing quite well and that Ceni is doing quite poorly. Originally conceived as a political construct, the CAS is now starting to ooch its way into the sporting realm as well... with the Afanc Strait submitting a combined delegation for the Global Athletics Tour (now on hiatus) and combining Olympic Committees into a unified ASOC. (We're too lazy to spell it out... You can gather what those four letters stand for together from the context clues!)

So, as a thought experiment, we've decided to experiment with the idea of a unified Afanc Strait football team: some players from New Gelderland, some players from Ceni. Will New Gelderland's defensive prowess stack together with Ceni's offensive capabilities? Will a mix and match approach in all the positions work a little bit better? Or will a lack of chemistry doom the whole endeavour from the start?

If our web gurus have figured this out right, four potential lineups should appear on the left and right of your screen, interspersed with the text. (But we're mediocre sportswriters, and we can't figure out how to hire any better than mediocre web gurus, so if it doesn't work... blame everybody here.)

Lineup 3 assumes that Nicoletta Arnaudo will remain on board as manager for the combined team; Lineup 1 assumes the Cenian manager will direct the team selection. (And when we say that, we assume that they will pick another manager with an attacking tendency... of course, their managerial drama has occupied many, many pages in our sister publication Cenisport, and it doesn't look like it will get resolved any time soon.) Lineups 2 and 4 are in between the two extremes as compromise positions to try and meld the two teams together.

As you can see, there's quite a bit of variety in our thought experiments, but also quite a lot of commonalities. In particular, the defensive lineup is pretty similar across the board... Engstrom appeared to be by far the best choice at left back (given that Ceni's hottest prospect in that area is the 16-year-old Soren Kiarha-Spring, and he's pretty far away from his prime as a full-fledged international), and the two most experienced center backs have taken the stage. Meanwhile, right back was also a no-brainer: Corran Casa-Alta is blowing away critics at Mipojoseon in Quebec and Shingoryeo, perhaps being the Afanc Strait's hottest defensive prospect in a generation. And given Celtic Noviodunum's defensive success at the Associations Trophy, Joshua Kosokhan got the nod at goalkeeper. So we certainly started out from a "best of both nations" approach, rather than adopting an entirely Gelderlish defensive structure.

Of course, the midfield and striking teams have significant differences looking at the two different starting points for our thought experiment. Lineup 1 imagines a Cenian manager continuing with their moderately attacking strategy that has only produced mixed results for Ceni, especially in this cycle. This lineup mix and matches (if that's the right verb form) Cenian and Gelderlish midfield and attacking players: Jasper Berenguer (the young Cenian midfielder who has been a credit to Celtic Noviodunum's recent success) and Allyson McKenna (the most experienced Gelderlish midfielder) will act as traditional midfielders in this setup; given the dearth of young Cenian attackers on the wings, Asher Koromin will act as a funnel to the striking team in this lineup, substitutable for the younger Marco Santa Oria at any time in this setup. The striking team again attempts to fuse New Gelderland and Ceni with the best striker from each team: Jaclyn Swan-Weiss will represent the former, Iain Cyn-Penzag will represent the latter. (Indeed, Iain Cyn-Penzag is by far and away the best striker from both teams, so he's assumed a prominent role in all four lineups.) While fairly traditional for Cenian managers, this team also suffers the problem that has been besetting Ceni so far this qualifying cycle: lack of depth in the wings.

Lineup 2 is a little more aggressive than the current Gelderlish strategy but a little more defensive than the current Cenian lineup. Since she's been playing in more of a defensive role for New Gelderland lately, Minerva Hume-Nelson would move up to the defensive midfielder role; Camden Engstrom would move up to become a right winger from her current position as just a plain Jane right midfielder. (We'd better hope Engstrom is as flexible in real life as we've made her out to be in this thought experiment.) Jasper Berenguer would act as an advanced playmaker here, and McKenna would take a box-to-box midfielder role; Cenian players would mostly pick up the slack in the offense, with Marco Santa Oria moving slightly up on the left and Cyn-Penzag striking pay dirt as the central forward. This is the most likely lineup out of the four for an Afanc Strait unified team; it has six Cenians and five Gelderlish in the starting lineup, and a good mix of the best of both worlds... both in strategy and in individual players.

Lineup 4 is a little more experimental than the traditional Cenian lineup. Instead of the traditional "playmaker, box-to-box, defensive" midfield setup that Ceni usually plays with, this lineup would go all-in on both the defensive and attacking midfielder roles. In this lineup, Hume-Nelson would join her Cenian counterpart Nova Kymeri in that defensive midfielder role; Engstrom would move up to become a right attacking midfielder (instead of a right winger, which might actually be more comfortable here). It would boost the performance at the wings, but at what cost? Would the attacking midfielders be able to pick up the slack where players like McKenna and Berenguer currently act in a playmaking midfielder role?

We definitely screwed up the order here, folks, so we'll talk about Lineup 3 last, which is by far the most defensive lineup of them all. It combines the Cenian strength in the center midfield, the Gelderlish strength in the wings, and the general Cenian strategy of having a defensive midfielder to bolster a three-man defense. And while it makes up for the traditional Cenian deficiency at the wings, it also begs the question: How will balls get to Iain Cyn-Penzag to be able to put them away at the other side of the pitch? Then again, a more defensive strategy has certainly served nations like Ko-oren and Audioslavia well...

Of course, the question still remains: Is a combined Afanc Strait national team an optimal solution to the woes that have befallen Ceni? Perhaps not, for political reasons: New Gelderland does not want to give up its own stellar results so far, and Ceni does not want to give up its own identity as the land of Arrowsword and Koromin. And the biggest question mark of them all: Will Margaret bless a new combined team like she has blessed New Gelderland, or will Ceni's bad luck in that department weigh the new combined team down?

We will probably never know how that question plays out.

Sports Brief: World Cup Qualifying

Matchday 11: Nyowani Kitara aims to get Qualification campaign back on track with 'stunningly late' winner against Lozho

LOZHO- This was always going to be a particularly tough World Cup Qualifying window. Just because we've been to the World Cup before- twice now, including a trip to the semi-freaking-finals- does not mean anything is promised next time around. "Look- even the World Cup champion has to go through Qualifying the next cycle around." Liang Wei told reporters. "Nothing is given, everything is earned- just because we want our group last time, and got into Pot 1 this team, it doesn't mean shit- nothing's promised to us, there are no guarantees anywhere about anything. And we're seeing that play out, here, in this group. 4 draws through 10 games- we're unbeaten, yes, but some of those draws were painful. Opportunities for one point to drop to three. Those are the points that we must pick up. But there's time to turn this around- but that can only happen if we start today."

And today has come. Nyowani Kitara travels to Lozho, after two disappointing draws sent the pot 1 team tumbling down the table. We're suddenly, instead of battling for the top spot in the group, battling for a playoff spot. Lozho sit in fourth, just three points behind us in the table. They're playing this game at home- and our very last Qualifier of the cycle will be against them as well. "Look, it wouldn't exactly be a footballing wonder of the world for a team of Lozho's quality to beat us on their home pitch." Said the captain, Armoni Okombo. "They've played well throughout this campaign, and through 10 games, they have the top rated defense in the group- only conceding 11 goals in 10 games, good for best in this group."

With Lozho playing at home, they wanted to get off on the front foot- a way to get the crowd going, and really put a frustrated Nyowani Kitara team on their heels. That is exactly what they did. While they mostly sat back and conceded possession, they pressed well, and really tried to beat us on the counter. And it was a strategy that can work when executed well- and they executed it to perfection. A Henry Blyth perfect through ball to Paxton Obamovich saw the striker in on goal with just 15 minutes played in the match, and Obamovich struck gold- chipping the goalkeeper for yet another goal as part of this campaign. An early 1-0 lead to Lozho. Fortunately for us, we would respond quickly- with Wang Jiahui heading in a cross from Handsdotter in the 22nd minute to level the game at 1.

When Paxton Obamovich buried a penalty just before halftime, to go into the break up 2-1, however- the panic bells were screaming in Nyowani Kitara. Think about it. We had just gone to a World Cup Semifinal. And to think that we could absolutely butcher building on top of that? We didn't even make it out of the groups of the Copa Rushmori. Hell, when was the last time we went to the knockouts of the regional tournament? And then to follow that up with potentially not even Qualifying for the big dance? No- things needed to change. The manager made two changes at the break- bringing on Mhara Vera for Kamzuni Chinwemwe, and then bringing on Jekuche Jokonya for Omollo Ayange.

Fortunately, that was the tactical change we needed to provide a spark in this squad. We came out guns a blazing in the second half- knowing that we needed at least a draw to keep the pressure off of our backs, but preferably, we were looking for three points. That would mean they would need to score at least twice. Odede Angonga scored in the 61st minute, to get the Kitarans level with about half an hour left to play. They pumped up the visiting section of the crowd, as we started to finally get the better of our opponents in play. It was clear that Lozho was trying to clamp down for the point, as we were going for three. But fortunately, we'd get there- Handsdotter burying a layoff in the 85th minute was enough to seal the deal, and get three hard-earned points on the road.

It did not come without hazards, however. Angonga went down with an injury on the celebration, twisting an ankle- and doctors confirmed that he'd next the next 5 matches due to the ankle sprain, missing Matchdays 12-16 of World Cup Qualifying. "Brutal that we have our #9, our lead striker, our top goalscorer, go down just as we enter a crucial phase of Qualifying." Liang Wei told reporters. "But this sport has always been next man up. We've got the talent- we've got to find the goalscorers."

Matchday 12: A frustrated Liang Wei seethes on the sideline as Nyowani Kitara fumble away opportunity for three points in 0-0 draw against last place Oflia

OFLIA- A trip to the last place team in the group is usually going to be a fun one. Especially considering that we've already beaten them. In the home leg, we crushed Oflia, with a 4-1 battering of our opening opponents kicking off this World Cup Qualifying campaign. Because of all the travel, and the strength of the opponent, Liang Wei opted for a rotated squad. "It's hard to win at this level, and with all this travel in this window, we almost have no choice." He told reporters. "But that doesn't change the objective. We need to find a way to earn three points, and continue to keep pace with our Sonnelian rivals for top spot in this group."

1-1 against St. Saratoga- at home. 0-0 against Oflia- on the road. If World Cup Qualifying ends with a trip to the Cup of Harmony, these are the first two results Nyowani Kitara fans should point at. Stellar opportunities for an easy three points against low-quality opposition(they sit in 9th and 12th place in our Qualifying group, respectively), and we dropped points against both. We're unbeaten in this campaign, yes- but it doesn't matter when we're 5 points off pace for first place in this group, 5 points off pace against a team we beat by two at their own stadium, no less.

Did Oflia's goalkeeper have himself a day? Yes. 7 saves, several of them of the spectacular variety, kept them in the game. But look at the stats here. The xG goals comparison- Nyowani Kitara, 2.41 to 0.45 for Oflia. Not a perfect stat, yes- but it just shows you how much more attacking we were. The finishing simply was not there today. We had 22 total shots, 7 on goal, to Oflia's 2 shots(none on goal). We pushed forward, we tried all sorts of things. The only time we put the ball in the net was a 12th minute wonder volley by Christian Pichard- only to be called back for offsides. Handsdotter and Wang Jiahui both came in at the half, trying to help the rotated squad break the deadlock- but to no avail. Handsdotter hit the crossbar himself from distance, showing the type of day the Kitarans were having.

The worst blown opportunity, however, went to Josef Sparv- and it shows the troubles this team may have finishing, while Odede Angonga is out with an ankle sprain. He actually dribbled around the keeper, in the 76th minute, after a beautiful through ball by Wang Jiahui- on a play started by an interception from Handsdotter. But instead of simply passing the ball into the net, he had a terrible error- trying to shoot it high into an empty net. He explained his thought process afterwards, nearly in tears. "I could see a defender coming on, I did not want a goal line clearance." Instead, he sent the ball over the bar entirely, the golden opportunity resulting in a simple goal kick for the opposition.

A frustrated Liang Wei was heated after the match- using all sorts of words that were unfit to print, for the children's sake. There's still time, of course- but the margin for error, to get the automatic qualifying spot for the World Cup, is shrinking to a dangerously low number.

Preview of the next window- Nyowani Kitara's matchups for Matchdays 13 & 14 of World Cup Qualifying

BUJUKAMBA- Who's next? We'll return for some home cooking. On Matchday 13, we'll welcome Macbon into town. They currently sit level with Oflia in the table, only not in last place in the Qualifying group due to goal differential. That is a game we should be heavily favored in- but considering Nyowani Kitara's propensity to drop points over the last few windows, especially in games that are simply there for the taking, no assumptions should be made here. "Its been a bit of a reality check for this NT, and this fanbase- our run to a WC semifinal didn't suddenly make us a massive nation." Said a TV analyst here at home. "We've got to take everyone seriously, we've got to grind out these wins- three points are valuable, and they are difficult to earn. Let's make sure that we can earn them at the proper intervals."

But, if all goes according to plan(big IF), the big game of the window is surely Nyowani Kitara's second trip to Sonnel- this time, to face off against Juvencus. It's a massive game between two teams that are in Pots 1 and 3, and ranked 2nd and third in the group table, respectively. Three points for either side would go a long way in both team's quest to chase down Drawkland at the top of the table. Remember, Drawkland currently sit with 31 points, while Juvencus have 29, and Nyowani Kitara are in third with 26.

"Look- Juvencus are absolutely favored in that contest." Said the NYK TV analyst. "They have been the better football team throughout World Cup Qualifying, and that shows in the table. Every relevant category, they've been better than us. They've scored 9 more goals than us- a team that are used to just topping all sorts of goalscoring charts. They've got a +23 goal differential, compared to just +14 for us. And, of course, they've won two more games than us- they've got 9 wins, while we've only won 7 times. Not to mention, they looked impressive, battling to a scoring draw at the Revolutionary Grounds in Dewayo."

Not to mention- we'll be missing our primary #9, due to injury. But a more optimistic analyst said that this team is going to be dangerous- they are at their best without expectations. "Look, when nobody saw them coming, you saw how they played last cycle, right?" Said a different TV analyst. "They were refreshed- it felt freeing. They went forward with abandon, created, and took their chances. They genuinely seemed to be playing for each other. Maybe that can happen here. If they can play well against Macbon, some of those frustrations can be put away potentially- and maybe we'll be dangerous in Juvencus. We won once in Sonnel already, remember? Why not again?"

Torgos Tribune ~ A Returning Order?

Queen Azra has announced that next month will see a pair of votes taking place in the dual islands, as Pasarga continues to right the ship after the attempted coup by rebel parliamentarians last year. As most are aware, a short lived rebel government had taken over Torgos and the north of Pargis as a whole before coalition forces from Sargossa and Eura, as well as forces loyal to the royal family were able to coordinate and launch counter attacks to reclaim the capital and other lost lands. The strikes also managed to locate the rebel leader and he fell victim after refusing to surrender to the coalition forces, cutting off the funding for the mercenary forces that the rebel government had been using to enforce their desires upon the nation. After the fall of their leader, the majority of the rebels either surrendered or were scattered, with the rebel parliamentarians arrested, with the rebel armed forces being detained and awaiting court martials for their sentencing in assisting the rebel government in their attempt to overthrow the royal family and end the noble Majistar bloodline.

The arrests of the parliamentarians who were part of the attempted coup have left the parliament itself in a stand still, especially with the leader of those rebels having been the former Minister of the Interior, or essentially the person in charge of the nation if for some reason the monarch is indisposed. With a dozen of the sixty seats empty, the Queen has announced that there will be elections in the districts whose seat has been empty as a result of those arrests, most of these seats coming from Torgos, Troubalose, and other parts of northern Pargis. The Eternal Flame party is expected to be in contention for all of the seats, which will be a huge boon for the party as the Anarchists party had been pushing hard to destabilize the political spectrum following attempted coup. However there has also been a surprising amount of support for the recently created Green Wave party, a party who advocates for social progressiveness but also staunch nationalists, drawing on an surprising amount of followers who think the Eternal Flame has entangled itself too much in foreign affairs and who want order that the Anarchists would not provide.

After the elections to fill the empty seats, there will be a referendum vote the following week on the future of Pasarga within the Common Rushmori Community, CRC for short. There has been a huge wave of anti-CRC sentiment sweeping through large swathes of the nation following the attempted coup and it appears that the queen's councilors have convinced her that the sentiment is demanding of a vote. On the balance, it is currently hard to make any projections on which way the referendum is going to go and it might even come down to which side the royal family decides to come down in support of. There is belief that the family will be in support of staying in the CRC, given it was the late King Jakub who oversaw Pasarga's membership into the organization, yet rumors suggest that the Queen does not see the organization in a favorable light after the failure of many of the CRC nations to supply aid before, during, or after the coup attempt. It comes in a bit of ironic timing as Sargossa is on the opposite track, looking to join the organization while the dual islands are considering a withdrawal.

With Jorgen Bjerkness coming off the bench against the Tetrarchy to score a winner in a 1-0 encounter, for the third time this campaign, the discussion on the so-called "Bjerkness dilemma" intensified. The young Fort Viljan ace can no longer be parked on the bench with four of the most feared opponents to face in the upcoming five games. On the other hand, the default option chosen by McEather, with Worbe, Carstensen and Bjerkness as the midfield trio, has crashed and burned against serious opposition. In a quest for an alternative, we listen in on some of the domestic tactical masterminds and their suggestions for a reinforced Whalers line-up.

Marit Spilken, current Forbrodring Opsvik manager

This line-up needs that boost of creativity that only Jorgen Bjerkness has an offer. But it spans in a wider issue that the current line-up is struggling with: so far, no goal was scored against the top four seeds. In these games, we see Till Myrrheim, so prolific across the Campionato, dry up. And Daniel Clark, squashed between the wing and his natural position, misses the experience to navigate this difficult task. As such, we should use Bjerkness not just for himself, but also to resolve the wider problem of those around him. A 3-2-3-2 formation gives some fresh air in attack: Myrrheim is relieved of some of the pressure whilst Clark receives a more comfortable role. Behind them, Bjerkness and Williams become uncharacteristic wing players: both like to cut inside and appear as a false ten. This allows Simon Carstensen to fall back when his instinct requires so, giving the Whalers a lot of potential attack patterns.

Fries de Boer, former FC Waalterzee and Draiewikum Boys manager

When one looks back at the big games from our Whalers, the pattern that returned in every one of those was not the collapse of the midfielders, despite that being the leading narrative, but the collapse of the midfield. A seeming contradiction but bear with me. The individual performances, disregarding the personnel, showed their strengths: the control of Worbe, the stamina of Bissett, the overview of Carstensen and the raw genius of Bjerkness. But as the clock ticked, they were abandoned by their support. First the defenders gave in, as their hands were tied by the pressure. And then the forwards gave up, having met the end of their breath. To avoid another midfield disaster, it will require to redraw the plan from the sketch book onwards. With Poulsen and Brymsaeter, we have capable wing backs. Adding Peary in the heart of the defense gives stability and the luxury of a Bjerkness. Requiring two strikers, the partnership of Clark-Myrrheim makes most sense. Williams might be a difficult sacrifice to make, but one needed to make the pieces fit.

Ilise Hauk, current SK Sandfjell manager

I can see why the call for Jorgen Bjerkness becomes louder with every goal of his. But what people seem to forget is that two of his lucrative strikes materialized as the Fort Viljan man came off the bench. Having someone with his energy and creativity to break into the plan might be the most powerful card on the hand of McEather, so why would we rob him of that skill? Having Bjerkness in store has other advantages that are easily overlooked: it solves the visible power struggle between the two young wolves of the pack. Simon Carstensen earned his role as the squad leader with silver medalware, not with goals against squads positioned well outside the top 100 of international football. The presence of Bjerkness at kick-off seems to hinder his options and with the control center destabilized, the whole team comes to a standstill. Value Bjerkness for what he is: a formidable trick up the sleeve of the national manager.

Eduard Parrotin, former Olympique Isbècque manager

The current tactical plan of McEather lacks surprise and has become predictable and even a bit stale. With that in mind, why not look back in time for one of the most impactful ideas ever executed in our Premier Division: the 'benzene' from Harm de Weerd which still shows its worth for Sandfjell Fotball to this day. Another major advantage is that three of the key players for such a 3-6-1 are already accustomed to its flexibility. Myrrheim becomes a full-on targetman again, Carstensen knows how to direct it and Bjerkness can play in various roles. Such a line-up would not require a complete overhaul of the personnel: Williams could play his part coming from a row deeper in the field and even a loose plan with position swaps can use a controller such as Worbe. But it will give minutes and maybe even starts to players such as Barrington, Breuker and Veensma. Our midfield is, after all, the section with the best depth in the selection.

Jon Forseth, former national manager and now with Zenit Attawapiskat [QUE]

I see various colleagues approach the presence of Bjerkness, an exciting young man, as a problem rather than an opportunity and can only pray (in vain, probably) that McEather doesn't fall for the same trap. Some suggest outlandish ideas, such as the rather peculiar 'benzene' or even ousting Williams. Those disregard that the presence of the Corinthians No Longer star gives important oxygen to his teammates, slurping up a lot of the attention of the opposition. The most logical sacrifice to make, to me, must be Daniel Clark. The Noordende youth was thrown in the deep and out of position too fast by McEather. It must be added, on his work rate, Clark avoided drowning in a lot of games but was the first man overboard against key opponents. Relieving him allows a return to the original 4-2-3-1 as it stood, without shaking up the team too much with ample training time and big games ahead. Add Breuker next to Worbe in front of your defense and the three midfielders left can use their creativity (and the unrelenting power of Myrrheim) at will. Bjerkness, Carstensen and Williams next to one another, the best Cap Nord has on offer and a trio that can pain even the biggest opposition.

Need To Tik That Box
By Rami Niblick in Tikariot City, Tikariot

THE time for "maybe", "what if", and "well..." is over. We're into the business end of qualifying, and from hereon in there is no margin for error from anyone harbouring serious thoughts of making it to the World Cup. These next ten matches will decide the fates of nations across the multiverse, so what better time to travel to the group's leaders?

Yeah, we could be in trouble here.

Tikariot have, for the most part, been vacuuming up the points. OK, so the goalless draw with the CRC was a blot on the copybook, but in their last two matches they beat Turori - away - and did what we couldn't, taking three points off Montaña Verde. They're yet to lose a match in the qualifiers, are four points clear at the top of the table, and have already beaten Krytenia in Krytenia. Needless to say, the Dragons are coming into this match very much the underdogs.

That tag, however, might be a little unjust. Where is the statement win for the Snowy Owls? Yes, they've won ten of twelve, but none of them have been by more than two goals. Yes, they've only dropped points twice, but both times were at home. Yes, they've got the most goals in the group, but they've conceded more than any of the other teams in the top half. Krytenia, meanwhile, may have had their slip-ups - not just Montaña Verde, but the abomination that was the draw in Inkwellistan - but they've also put teams to the sword. Just ask Raspotochje or Strayan Rus. The one problem is that of the four games Krytenia have failed to win, three have been on the road.

The one home defeat? Tikariot. We feel BXE and the team will be wanting to reverse that little statistic.

One further word of caution, though. If Krytenia want to defeat Tikariot - and, for that matter, games like the return match against Baker Park and the trip to Turori - they'll need to keep their discipline. For the third time in this campaign, the Dragons will have a player unavailable through suspension, with Sonny Chiesa's agricultural challenge in the game against the CRC keeping him out of the squad for this one. He follows David Green, for whom red cards are an occupational hazard, and Amanda Bach, who of course was sent off in the reverse of this fixture back on Matchday Two, in having been sent off during these qualifiers. It's a most un-Krytenian thing; I know I've said on more than one occasion in the past that we shouldn't be afraid to be the villains, but there's a difference between being craftily nasty and recklessness, and this falls squarely in the latter category. Hopefully, though, all eleven Dragons will remain on the pitch, and we'll be facing Guanacasteca in Bradwell with three precious points in the bag. Onward!

FlashReport: Competitively Inquisitive
By Tex Preston
The past couple of matches or so deserve a more in depth report to make up for my absence, but a quick report is all I’m able to drum up at the moment. When I last discussed the Vans and their kinetics, Munson’s myriad were almost at a point of mutiny. A chalk-scraping start to an otherwise ambitious cycle had dragged Qasden to a cricketing 10th place in their qualifying group, one removed from dead last. It was humiliating, revolting, and damn near an atrocity that nearly costed the GM her career before it could truly get off the ground. She was tasked with on leading the team to victory versus the Natanians and Kirungabians, her head on a spike should she republish her work from the opening days against Stevencousin and Talamia.

To everyone’s relieved astonishment, however, she was indeed able to keep composure of the team at a high, garnering the first two wins of the season. Afterwards, the Vans have gone even further, taking out Dod Rava, Gyatso-Kai, and Canadian Dominion, as well as drawing a dreaded Adab and holding back a desperate Ceni. Only Yuezhou were able to deny her continued successes, beating Qasden in a tense matchup at Community Greens. The QasCup, a charity friendly staged in the following days of the Yuezhou match, would also be won out by the Vans, though a better report on that match will come here sooner.

For now, however, the Blue-Reds stand at an appealing, albeit extremely volatile, 4th place, staring daggers into the playoff spot above them. The Vans stand all but a single point behind Adab, but that one point also stands right behind them, knife and fork, in the form of the 18-point Cerberus occupying 5th through 7th: being Kirungabi, Ceni, and Gyatso-Kai. Any wrong moves now could prove detrimental towards the campaign, and the next two don’t look to throw any soft punches, either. Stevencousin, sitting in a respectable 8th 3pts behind the madness, drew us in our own backyard; seeing as the qualifiers are starting to wane, that effort to claw up the rankings will be a catalystic caliber towards their ideal plans when we step onto their pitch. Thankfully, however, a match that’ll save the Vans’ financially this season is due to arrive immediately afterwards, being the big bad beatdown at the Royal versus ringleaders, Græntfjall. The Snow Wolves showed us no remorse in Hattmark when we last fought, and since then, they kept that Sherman trail going, sitting on an unshakable throne with 11 out 12 matches being wins. Only Adab has been lucky enough to strike blood against the literal top dogs, but for the Vans to keep themselves in a green light for possible playoff contention, they need to make their home fans proud.

That’ll cover this flash report. Can Captain Orville continue the Vans’ lucky streak past the impenetrable? Will the Snow Wolves prove their point in asserting total control over the World Cup Auto-Qual? Stay tuned, stay updated, and stay alert for better reports, soon to premiere from the bellows of Qualifiers!

“Bach…!”

Four hours of international football had passed since the Condors had found the back of the net. Dávalos had shuffled his pack, hauled on Osito to deafening cheers from around the Santa Margarita stands, no doubt replicated throughout the city and beyond, alongside Schutzán, whom he’d originally sat in preference to Cristo Díaz who offered a more physical presence to counter the Quinn–Stringer double-threat for Criteña, and Indiano in place of Covarrubias, who looked pretty well gassed. All that attacking talent, and yet it was Adriana, the left-back, herself a recently arrived substitute, whose speculative ball into the box was overhit and floated into the path of Bach, the Criteñan keeper. Who improbably palmed it straight into the goal. Even the raucous Estadio Metropolitano Máximo Encarnación was silent for a moment as they tried to process what had happened, only to roar to life as the scoreboard lit up. An embarrassing own goal had finally broken the Condors’ egg. Dávalos had seen stranger things in his 77 years, but not many, and not many stranger.

“Man…!”

Dávalos was furious, so angry he can’t spake. The referee flashed a yellow at Chiesa, who shrugged and strode back to Los Dragones’ lines, but Primitivo remained down, clutching his ankle. The clumsy tackle had upended him and taken with a hefty clump of turf. (Not that the Verdean pitch had been a snooker surface beforehand.) The crowd were baying for blood, but it was only a booking. Fortunately he had one substitution left, but he had more than the last eight minutes of this game to consider. Just as Primitivo had put together a more composed performance, a brutal Criteñan foul had taken him out. It took some time to get him off the field, though at least he brushed off the stretcher and made it off standing, to a round of applause. In the meantime the Criteñans had been lining up their defence, jostling Osito and Cambeiro, while Schutzán stood over the ball, fiddling with her ponytail. She took two paces back, nodded to Monaguillo, freshly on and bouncing up and down with energy, and ran in. The ball arced over the wall, not even scraping Chiesa’s head, but slammed into the netting. Bach’s despairing dive grabbed only air: if she’d been at fault for the first, she was blameless here. Nothing was stopping that.

“Turn…!”

But Indiano wasn’t listening. Instead of heeding his coach’s barked order to turn and square the ball to Aramis, in an ocean of space, he tried to take it on himself. Even though he’d already spent the first 20 minutes of the match proving he didn’t have the pace to outrun Kiarra Yates, who was barely jogging to keep in stride with him. She poked out a foot to dispossess him, but at least he managed to hoick the ball back against her shins before tumbling out of play, and came up claiming the corner. Not usually a fertile scoring opportunity for the Condors, especially without Osito, but the centrebacks came up all the same, Mandito, the proud young captain-in-the-making, and Mercedes, the quick-witted jokeress. Both of them stacked end-on-end might have reached Eovaldi’s shoulders. It was Schutzán – starting again, what had he been thinking – over the ball. The ball fired in, cleared by a header, of course – but only one as far as the edge of the box, where Mercedes, cleverly realizing she was never going to win an aerial battle, lurked. She brought the ball down off her chest, moved it to her left. Arfon Davies steaming in a red-haired frenzy. Didn’t quite reach her as she unleashed the shot and gave the Condors the improbable lead.

“Er…!”

It hadn’t taken long for Los Búhos Nevados to claim a considerably more probable lead of their own, even with this half-second string side they were playing. Dávalos, without his best player, struggling to retain the confidence of a public angered at his selection decisions, struggling to retain the morale of a dressing room staring at another failing campaign, hadn’t been in inspiring form at half-time. Hesitating and fumbling his way through a half-time speech that failed to come up with much in the way of rousing calls to glory or simple tactical fixes. Los Búhos Nevados were the better team and the Condors had no answers. And after the half another second-stringer getting a game had extended their lead to 3–1. Dávalos sunk to the bench, cupping his face in his face, ashamed at the stinging humiliation. Which meant he didn’t see as Aramis drew Merson wide and then cut the ball back, straight to a grateful Tatiano, who hit the chance first time. He didn’t see it, but he heard it.

“Over…!”

The game was done. Los Búhos Nevados’s substitute had scored and then Conway added a second, and all that was left was to preside over the last rites of a game that had started so well for the Condors but turned sour as curdled goat’s milk. The story of Verdean football: the bright start, and the long slow decline. Dávalos was an old man. This qualifying campaign was taking its toll on him. He could only imagine how crushing it must be to those younger. As he dismissed any chance of a comeback, Monaguillo and Schutzán played a 1–2, and the midfielder hit the return over Dagenais and through the defense. Monaguillo ran onto it and it bounced up, sitting perfectly for his strike, which he put his foot through with all the summoned frustration of the last few weeks. That Merson got a hand to it was to his credit, but it would have taken the Hand of God to stop it. It wouldn’t change the result, and it barely even put a dent in the goal difference, but it allowed the Estadio to rise to its feet one last time and cheer the home side. It was the small things, Dávalos reflected.

“Drive…!”

Dávalos had only one thing to say to the coach driver as he boarded the bus behind a miserable-looking Tino. They needed to get out of this place. After a thoroughly uneventful match mainly remarkable for absolutely no highly unusual incidents occurring whatsoever, two attacking sides had played out a lumpen 1–0 snoozefest punctuated only by a well taken chance by Jari Juups (or “Harry Hoops” as the Verdeans called him). In desperation, Dávalos had resorted to a strikerless formation for the friendly, playing Covarrubias as a deep-lying false 9 ahead of Tatiano and Monaguillo. It hadn’t worked. Tino, for all his goalless ills, offered more threat than any two of these guys put together. Gnomo clapped his hand on the young striker’s shoulder. Time for him to get back into the starting XI.

State Funeral- Former Isebantu Mutungi and Omugabe Ssekamanya

The funeral was a somber occasion- as one would expect. Highlighted by the presence of people like Queen-Empress Christine II of Quebec, President Otamendi of Cardenao, Prime Minister-Elect Schoenlein of Baker Park, and President Wentworth of the same nation, President von Kruger of Ranoria, and Premier Hélène Embroise of Chromatika- as well as prominent members of the Raynor Family. Even President Kasekende, of the Islamic Republic of the Busoga Islands, was at this event in person- technically a groundbreaking move on its own. And even Sarai Gwenderyn- yes, the Sarai Gwenderyn. The GOAT Quarterback. Of course, well-beyond that, there were various diplomats from all over the world, with invitations seemingly landing everywhere besides Corvistone.

The young baby, Isebantu Sekakama, and his twin sister, Omugaba Zalika, made their first public appearances at the funeral. It was a tough funeral to be a part of. Princess Muirne, in tears, dressed in all black- or as we must call her, Omugaba Muirne- and surely, in just a few years, we'd be giving her the title of Sarauniya, or Queeb Mother. It's remarkable the baby did not cry more- it is tough to bring a child of that age to a huge event like that, and they were well-behaved. A big credit to Omugaba Murine, who will now have a massive challenge, envied by few. Now fully a part of the Banijan Royal Family, with her children as the direct heir to the throne, she would have to navigate this country, a land she was not born in nor grew up in, without her loving husband.

Princess Muirne was one of those who gave speeches at this funeral procession. "Omugabe Ssekamanya was the light of my life- a man that I loved so dearly." She told the gathered crowd of all sorts of important politicans, dignitaries, celebrities, and just people who were sad. "You could see the passion with which he approached life, when he won an Olympic gold medal in the 3x3 men's basketball tournament, in the Twin Cities. He went forward with everything in life with such enthusiasm. He could light up any room. He was a wonderful husband, and partner. His time with his twin children was so brief- the world is too cruel to rip him away from them, at this young tender age."

Omugaba Namakula, who was the wife of the former Isebantu Mutungi, as well as the mother of Omugabe Ssekamanya, spoke next. "To lose my husband, and my oldest son, just like this, in such a terrible accident- this is a moment that truly breaks my heart." She told the gathered crowd. "To see the ways in which they cared for this country, they would have been absolutely wonderful Kabakas- we are all worse off that they did not have the chance to succeed the Kabaka. My husband's soul- always putting other first, the way he was able to analyze problems and deal with them in good manner, the love he showed for his people- thinking about him makes my heart hurt."

All sorts of people gave speeches- the Katikkiro, the Kiongozi, the Patriach of the Mormon Church, the Kabaka's wife- and now, the Kabaka would speak himself. "To see my son die like this- it is always heartbreaking, when a father has to bury his son. But to bury his son and his grandson- it is a terrible wound, a wound that will likely never heal itself in my heart. Mutungi and Ssekamanya are heaven-bound, surely- they will know that we are all always praying for them. While the way they went there, they were robbed far too soon from us, they are in a better place. Let us use their lives as an example. The losses of those close to us can lead us astray, can lead us into darkness- but let us use their lives to help bring us back to the light."

Per royal family customs, after a choir sang, the Royal family performed a miniature 'ceremony' around those Princes. Kabaka Mwanga, his wife Luguba Katrina, Omugaba Namakula, and Omugaba Muirne, all gathered around the two caskets. The surviving parents and wives of the Princes. The Kabaka rose with two swords, and place them inside the caskets, next to the bodies of the Princes. The wives of the two Princes, both of whom were clearly in tears, kissed the foreheads of their deceased.

Then, Luguba Katrina rose. She carried with her two crowns- symbolizing the crowns that would have rested on the heads of the former Isebantu Mutungi, or Omugabe Ssekamanya, if things had gone according to plan, and they had became Kabakas. She placed one over the chest of the former Isebantu Mutungi's body, and another over the chest of the late Omugabe Ssekamanya- her oldest son, and her grandson. The Kabaka then laid a cross over each body as well- symbolizing their burial as Christians. It was at that point when the siblings of Omugabe Ssekamanya came up.

His younger brothers, and fellow Olympic gold medalists- Omugabes Ssemanda and Kato, as well as Omugaba Ujamaa. Those, of course, were also the children of Isebantu Mutungi. Those three would join together to close the caskets.

It would be President Otamendi, of Cardenao, who would perform the final act of the funeral. He walked up to the closed casket, and was handed a rifle- they were going to do the 21 gun salute. Princess Muirne had personally asked President Otamendi to be a part of this- she knew how much his friendship meant to her now late husband. He barked out the orders, as this was rehearsed. "Ready!" "Aim!" They pointed the cannons, filled with blanks, towards the skies. He grabbed a gun- 7 guns, 7 cannons, seven pieces of artillery.

"FIRE!" President Otamendi barked. They loaded again. "FIRE!" They all fired. They loaded a last time. "FIRE!" He barked, firing his rifle's blanks into the air for the last time. He tearfully went back to his seat, clearly feeling the moment.

A moment in time. The burial itself would be a private ceremony. The public ceremony- complete. The tears- flowing.

Banijans use double home window to climb back to the table of the table as they recover from away loss to Mytanija

HOIMA, ANKOLE- After being outclassed by the Mytanar coaching staff in their trip to Rushmore, the Banijans had found themselves sitting in second place in their World Cup Qualifying group, after 10 matchdays. Behind by just one point with 12 matches to go, of course, it was still anybody's ballgame- but still, with first place guaranteed a berth in the Finals(and for Banija, Pot 1 for the Finals as well), while second place has to slog through the Playoffs, there is a big difference between finishing #1 and #2 in this World Cup Qualifying group. And with Mytanija's win over Banija, they briefly occupied the top slot in their group.

But, of course, with 12 matchdays left, still a TON of time to go. Banija had a pair of home games this window against mid-table squads- Ascvalion and Trolleborg, in that order. On Matchday 11, we played against Ascvalion. As during the mourning period, there was a memorial for the Princes who died in the Blood Sea Plane Crash- those who were supposed to be future Kabakas of this country. The Banijan anthem was not played, with a moment of silence instead played in its place. While Mytanija 2-0 on the road against Lionsroar, Banija took care of business at home against Ascvalion. We created chances early and often, and Lolong Bokate, who has had a slow start to this campaign, took his chances- recording a double so Banija could earn the 2-0 victory.

On Matchday 12, however, Mytanija slipped up- falling 1-0, on the road, against a tough third place Poafmersia side. The Banijans got the match news before their own match, which upped their spirits. A game against Trolleborg, however, is never a give me. Of course, we battled out to a 0-0 draw on Matchday 1 against them at their place. While Mavuto Field was packed, we fought a tight, tense battle against the visitors. Tairu Conateh had a sublime backpost finish, taking a Gereh Kama cross first time, and his 27th minute goal was the difference. We did not have to chase in this one, thanks to the relatively early goal, and we did not chase in this one- Conateh's goal was the first of many.

That allowed Banija to leapfrog Mytanija again- although this group is far from over. With 10 matchdays left, Banija sit at 31 points in the group- Mytanija 29, Poafmersia 26. "There's still a ton to play for out here. Multiple teams control their own destiny in this group- we're going to have to take this thing one day at a time." Said Pam Scott, the manager. "Too many games to play to worry about the table just yet. WE can only put our head down, and play our best football- the time for worrying about the table is coming, but alas, it is not here yet."

The Kadongo Kamu will travel to Cap Nord on Matchday 13, before returning home to face an unranked Brusseldorf on Matchday 14.

Demolition Derby
Saperetia 0-5 Abanhfleft

Losing the last 3 games has seen Mouthenio fall out of favour with many of the fans. If the results do not improve, many fans expect him to be put out of a job. And today is the game against Abanhleft. Many fans hope to win the game, but with recent results, only a few believe in a victory. And so, the SAP 4-3-3 lined up against the 4-2-3-1

Saperetia: GK Yakim (C) DEF Ipatiy, Celso, Diyan, Achille MID Lacy, Knobes, Vilfredo ATK Paavali, Antoon, Evhen

Abanhfleft: GK Cardew (C) DEF Sagun, Bellingham, Thonet, Chiba MID-DEF Carmichael, Baburov MID-ATK Közalmaz, Fahrni, Carlos Lado ATK Bensoussan

The beginning went unsurprisingly, with the Fleftics on the attack and the Saperetians on the defence. The first goal came in only the 5th minute, as a solo run from Bensoussan saw him hit one past Yakim. The next goal came in the 21st minute as a corner from Baburov saw Bellingham head it in, bringing the score to 2-0, which is the score that was when the referee blew the whistle to end the first half. The second half went even worse for the Saperetians, as minute 49 saw another solo run from Bensoussan bring the score to 3-0. A great passing play saw Fahrni bring the score to 4-0 in the 64th minute and the fifth goal came as a 78th minute shot from Bensoussan was deflected off of Celso and into the net.

This is the biggest loss so far in the qualifiers, bringing the total GD for our nation to -13. We are tied with 2 other nations for 2nd least amount of goals scored, but we are doing good on the coals conceded side of things. As the halfway mark for the qualifiers, things are looking bleak as we host Patriotlandia in our national stadium for the next fixture.

"We'll Take A Draw"
Saperetia 1-1 Patriotlandia

As the team is preparing to play against Patriotlandia again, many are wondering what will happen to Mouthenio after the qualifiers. Fans of 1922, the club he managed before he went to manage the national team, want him back, preferably even before the qualifiers end. Mouthenio has refused to speak, saying that they have to focus on the games that are coming, speaking of which, here is the SAP 4-3-3 vs the PTR 4-2-1-3

Saperetia: GK Yakim (C) DEF Ipatiy, Celso, Diyan, Achille MID Lacy, Knobes, Vilfredo, ATK Gordie, Antoon, Titus

Patriotlandia: GK Lataupe (C), DEF Vaillancourt, Bromont, Ranger, Laflèche, MID-DEF Lachapelle, Manahan, MID-ATK Desrives, ATK Langlais, L. Graham, Rodin.

Unsurprisingly, Saperetia was on the defence in the first part of the game. A mistake from Celso saw Rodin have basically an open net in front of him, as he scored to bring the score to 1-0 in minute 12. A better defensive structure from some previous games saw Patriotlandia not be able to break it until the end of the first half. After the break, Saperetia went on the attack in an attempt to salvage a point. After failing to do this multiple times, in the 87th minute, Antoon went on a great solo run as he hit a beautiful shot from just outside the box to score the first Saperetian goal in 4 games, and with no big chances for either side after that, the first Saperetian points in 4 games.

Speaking in a press conference after the game, Antoon said that "every point is better than none, so we'll take a draw against an opponent we have lost twice to before." Mouthenio, like usual, refused to comment. The next game is against Valladares, a nation the team has won against before, so many fans will be hoping that that could be replicated again.

Today, the clement weather let us test the repaired Flambeau at sea. Despite a few key advantages in the ship design simplifying the work, namely, the flat bottomed hull helping us forgo the necessity of a dry dock, repairs had still taken all winter. Through cold days and blizzards, the crew had managed to repair the hull, masts, sails and a few cannons.

As we sailed east, we expected to wrap around an island but the land seemed to stretch for many leagues more. We took many measurements to be used to draw maps later and fully tested the ships capabilities and stress tested the repairs. Everything seemed to be in order which is promising if we want to plan a circumnavigation of this new land. Before we turned the ship around and headed back to Port, we decided to investigate the eastern lands that had been spotted during one of our winter expedition. The area seemed to benefit from hot air currents which helped it be ahead in the spring cycle. With the snow mostly melted away, the flora could be seen slowly coming back to life. The land is fairly flat and a fair distance away from the mountains that cut through the island. These would make for incredible farmlands given enough resources. "Sour" would be the man for the job. His farming experience and leadership would undoubtedly transform this region into arable land that could feed a whole flock of new settlers. If we want to live on this land long term free of oppression we have to build it right.

Patriotlandia 3–0 Valladares
Parc du Nord (24,002), Alexandrie, Province of Foubrac
Athlétique Alexandrie's stadium was the stage for the last game before the schedule flips over for the second half of the qualifiers. The Patriotlandians took control of the early game. Early chances in the Valladar zone were cleared but they showed faults in their system. Just before the end of the half however, Elie Manahan would break the deadlock after a partial clear on a corner left him enough time to send a shot from long range. The shot made it passed Steven Piatti and sent the home crowd into a frenzy. Halftime rolled around with the Blue shirts up by a goal. Whatever speech Jean-Alexandre Carignan gave in the locker room seemed to have lit the fire as our compatriots came out firing. The midfield controlled the play feeding the front three and creating good chances. The Valladar defense was holding firm until David Rodin ran passed the defensive and beat Piattia through his outstretched legs. Before the final whistle, Heather Graham would find the back of the net after having substituted her brother Lucien. The defense and Paul Lataupe would hold on to the clean sheet to secure 5th place in the standings for Patriotlandia.

Saperetia 1–1 Patriotlandia
As the first repeat meeting in this qualifying cycle, the Patriotlandian national team looked to repeat their performance from the opening game which saw them clinch a 2-0 victory. Saperetia, the home side this time, used the crowd to their advantage, and had a revised system to thwart the Patriotlandian offense. David Rodin would find the back of the early however, capitalizing on a mistake. Just as the team thought they might have secured an important three points on the road, Hans-Jürgen Antoon would spoil the party with an excellent solo effort to bring his team level.

Valanora Times
A Time For Something New?

The Eternal Empire has undergone several metamorphosis since the inception of the Empire and the nations and kingdoms that were the predecessor to the entity. The Vanorian Empire after all is said to have originated from a single city with her people eventually spilling out across the entirety of the continent over time and many of the surrounding islands. From a single city-state to many to then a pair of kingdoms that vied for control of the Vanorian people, to then a loose alliance between those kingdoms and the island states that surrounded them, before then a unification into the empire that would be called Valanora, also known as the Eternal Empire. There have been member states that have come and gone as well as additions that have slowly been integrated into the Empire, including the semi-nomadic tribes that make up the Dark Templara nation located entirely in the continent of Arrosia, who swear fealty to the Empire and are considered citizens of it should they decide to travel outside of the Vanorian domain.

Change in the Empire has since its beginning been ever present within her lands, it is the beat that has kept the empire and her people moving ever forward through the millennia as society, culture, and technology continued to advance past that which was established when the elves first settled and created Gladerial. While it has often been times a more slow and methodic process than what might have been seen in other species' lands, it has had the same presence in the Eternal Empire as it has in any society that has been able to withstand the test of time and continue the march ever forward into the present day and beyond. This more methodic process where changes are often tried in small sizes before being brought to the general populace or reserved approach likely comes from the elves own mindset of taking a long term view and not wanting to undermine the established order of things unless the change that was set to replace it was indeed going to certainly be a change for the better and for as many as it could be, not for the benefit of a select few of the populace.

Change is once more knocking on the door of the Empire, though in this instance it is not a drastic change that may shake the very foundations of the empire, but rather a minor one that many have believed to be coming after the last decade or so. That change of course is that of the flag of the Eternal Empire, which has remained more or less the same for the past century. It is a flag that is iconic for many reasons and there has and will continue to be resistance to change a flag that is so synonymous with the Empire that nearly everyone in even foreign streets could be pulled aside and be able to identify the Empire by the flag. However it is a flag that now represents a Valanora that no longer exists, it represents a people and way of life that is no longer at the forefront of Vanorian society, it represents a past and an ideology that never truly came into being. It is no longer the flag that only represents the Arrosia mainland and Capri, but it need represent all of the Empire and the people within her as well as the peace she attempts to bring to those under her domain. In the coming months there will be artists contacted as well as polls made for societal input onto what the new flag should look like and it is the hope of the royal family that the flag will be ready to be used before World Cup Finals begin in the summer, where the Marauders will hope to be contending under the new flag.

Farewell So Soon?
Squornshelan Remnant States 3-1 Eshialand
Aerágny 0-1 Eshialand

ring! ring!

As the Owls' plane arrived back in Eshialand City following their away game against Aerágny, Melissa Carey's phone received a long-awaited call from a familiar number. "Coach??" she asked.

"Yes, it's me, I'm so sorry I've been out of contact for so long..."
"No, no need to be sorry... I'm just glad you're alright. What's been on your mind?"
"Well, truth be told... a lot of stuff."

Melissa was ready to hear everything Kenny Morgan had to tell her, but she was worried that any news coming from this would not be good indeed.

"Look... I'm just worried that I haven't been good enough. As your friend, I love this team. You're all my family. I've always loved every moment I've spent with you these last five years--"

"Coach, what are you trying to--"

"As your coach, I'm afraid I'm not doing right by you. As much as I want to be with you guys, you're probably better off without my mediocre coaching. Since I took my leave, you've gone, what, 3-1-1? With that draw to Audioslavia? Meanwhile with me you were a 1-4-2 ghost of your former selves."

"It's not about you Coach, it's not about your managing at all--"

"Let's face the facts Mel. I've overstayed my welcome as this team's coach. It's time for me to call it quits, stay on the sidelines, manage the Federation while you carry on my legacy as coach. You're far better than I ever could be."

Melissa couldn't believe the words coming out of Coach's mouth. He was going to retire from the team that he loved? He promised to carry them on to achieve their wildest dreams, he promised to stay along even in the hard times, to carry them through to the glory at the end of it all. And now here he was, seemingly throwing in the towel after a qualifying campaign that could still be turned around?

"Coach, do you even know what's driven us to perform as of late? We've been doing this for you. Hoping that good results may bring you back, make you see the hope we still have--"

"But it's not even that! I haven't given up on you, I know you can be the best team in the multiverse. I've just given up on myself. I'm not the coach to lead you, and these last few matches seem to have proven me right. Carry on where I'm leaving off, take the torch--"

"NO!!" Melissa yelled. "I can't take this self-deprecating BS. You're the best coach we could ever hope for, and a string of bad results could never convince us otherwise. You have damn big shoes to fill and there's no way I could ever fill them, not while I'm still donning my cleats, anyway. This is your team, we are your team. And we want you back, no matter what."

"Well I'm sorry, I don't think I can perform for you anymore. My time is ove--"

"COACH!!" Melissa yelled back, now with tears in her eyes. "I'm done listening to this! You've been our rock these past 5 years, no matter what's happened, you've been there for us. Sure, we may not have the best record right now, sure, some of our recent results have been spotty, but in our hearts we're still doing well, and we still love you. We're here to have fun, not win a fancy trophy! And you're the person who's made it all worthwhile. You've been like a father to us, and I'm not taking no for an answer! Please, come back and coach us again. If not for the results, just for the fun of it, just for the family that we are. We have 10 more games left here, 10 more wild adventures. Let's make it all worthwhile."

Silence fell upon the call as the coach pondered his options.

"...alright then you've convinced me--"

"Really??"

"Yes, really. I'll see you at the SuperDome tomorrow for more training... and I'll bring some donuts from Jim Morton's. Like the old times."

What do the White Stars think about... growing the economy?

Postby Saint Eleanor » Mon Feb 20, 2023 6:16 pm

World Cup 93 - eleventh matchday of qualifying
Aureumterra 0
Saint Eleanor 2 (Adam Denby goal 11', Natalie Monaco goal 76')

World Cup 93 - twelvth matchday of qualifying
Mertagne 1 (Pia Aziz goal 35', becoming the first person this cycle to score against Saint Eleanor in a losing cause)
Saint Eleanor 2 (Steve Pilchard goals 38' and 62')
What one change would you make to Saint Eleanor to make the national economy more productive?

John Bailey: Make sure people in the countryside get transit, too, to use that forsaken Banijism. It won't cost them anything - not that it costs the city people, with that said. But, given they enjoy all the trappings of Eleanorian public life except the buses... I can understand the reluctance to expand the taxis or the metro beyond the city itself, for reasons of practicality and extent and similar things, but there is no reason why there cannot be a regular bus service outside the city.

Cathy Winchester: Get our creative industries moving, please! Culture enriches everyone's life, but we just do not seem to be producing enough of it, given the talent I've seen we have. Even the people who do live up to a scintilla of their potential are underpaid, underfunded and underpromoted: half of the Hot Thirty chart is completely produced outside the country; Channel 4, possibly our greatest producer of drama, loses money most years and has sometimes had to beg people to advertise. Some people say we're pushing above our weight, but I definitely think we can do better.

Exandra Davies: Stop telling people how long they can work for. If they want to do twelve-hour days, six days a week, and both parties think they can do this without them being tired, they should be able to do that. But the Eleanorian Government still somehow insists you shouldn't be working longer than 60 hours a week!

Sam Newbridge: Take out those fancy tourism ad banners I see all over the place in a few other countries and watch as people come here... and do the things we do. If we're spreading the work out over more people... everyone works less for more or something. It worked for us during the big LBCT and Rising Stars week-long festival of football back in '99; there's no reason why it can't work again. I am not a numbers anything guru, thanks, so don't quote me on this.

Liam West: Better transport links in general. I'd say the city is well-connected, although not quite everywhere else, as other people I know have said. There are flights to other places, but mostly to Anaia - and even then not to all of it: on the off-chance we're drawn to play in Chromatika in next year's World Cup, there's a not-insignificant chance we'd have to change at Audioslavia because Eleanorian Airways hasn't reached the relevant agreement yet. By the way, if you want to go to the Holy Empire from here once we've played, you'll have to enter through turnstile 36 at the Nat Lib then turn left to the door that says "TOILETS OUT OF ORDER." Everybody in Central district knows the guy who mans that gate, but he'll only let you in if you have a ticket or you need to go to the Imperial Hippodrome.

Bridget Coombe: I wouldn't say there was one quick fix, as such; I'd need a bit of space, a bit of time, and the highest-ranking officers to vote in my favour when General Mitcham attends to the barracks in the sky. The most advantageous change would, I'd say, be something along the lines of attempting to negotiate free trade agreements, taking advantage of our low tariffs and soft power - exhibited in obvious-enough venues - to encourage prospective states to reduce tariffs on Eleanorian goods in turn and help send more money back to the treasury. I'm afraid people will fear we're just exporting oil and fellow players, however. I don't recall Kelssek's customs authority trying to levy a tariff on me when I joined the Championship.

David Newcastle: Create a non-emergency telephone line. When you think about the Army and Fire Service, everything's an emergency to them - but the EHS is getting a bit overworked, to put it politely. Too many people either just call 977 without a second thought, even thought that's supposed to be for the most life-threatening stuff, or go to their local hospital... which may not be convenient, never mind possible. I'm told the government has all 9-whatever-whatever numbers reserved for its own use; it might want to use one of its own for that. This way, the Health Service spends more time caring for people who need it... and less time having to categorise some nonsense on call.

Sylvia Hollenberg: I'm not sure if I'm particularly well-placed to answer this question... if I had to give an answer, I'd say probably convince the Atoccians for free trade in agricultural things, given that they are on a very small, very level playing field. But then I suspect that's already in the pipelines.

Dekamela weMexala: Stop giving every single person who is out of a job Unemployment Benefit. $500 per month is enough to cover many peoples' living expenses; if you wanted, you could spend forever out of a job and still survive, especially if you got out of school without passing Terranean and Maths. That is not the Eleanorian way. Yes, permanent disability benefit should remain - I'd say it should be increased - but small things like reducing UB a bit, tapering it out for long-time recipients and so on are going to help reduce the state's workload and the number of mouths they have to feed.

Steve Pilchard: Get money into supporting actual workplace training. The people who go to the University - and, to some extent, the Poly - for the most part turn out to be good citizens who hold major corporate positions, get paid a lot and make a difference to communities. That's about a third of any year group, however, maybe a bit more. The rest of the cohort often end up in jobs that are a bit shit in every sense of the word. Some companies are too busy looking after themselves to help out their staff, never mind their communities; if the government gave them money and said they had to use it on upskilling, we'd see a world of difference from the very start. Who spends the money for good, who thinks they doesn't need it... interesting things.

Jessica Martin: I don't think I'd say that a lot of what I've done, or tried to do, so far has focused on trying to improve corporate bottom-lines more than it has convinced them to improve their practices and standards. As the campaigns go, however, some people might remember my attempts - from before the Eleanorian national team - to provide that sporting equipment be cut out of the Sales Tax. There are substantial elements who think I'm "distorting the tax base" or thereabouts, but I just think it's the right thing to do. People say football isn't all about the money, but we'd look and act like 28th-division Farf league players if it wasn't.

Tim Brandon: Take our own post into our own hands. Right now, all the post that gets sent in Saint Eleanor is handled by foreign companies with little presence in the country other than a head office and a sorting centre; there are a couple of post offices per district and the government runs its own postboxes under the Infrastructure Ministry, but they have nothing to do with the actual post. A truly Eleanorian post service would offer accountability, employ local people who need jobs and create a properly joined-together postal system. I didn't mention that state employees can't go on strike... hadn't yet, anyway.

Georgia Wood: I think I could see the value in computer assistance for more occupations than the engineering and manufacturing industry. I am not saying that computers should be doing everything, everywhere, all the time - the price of electricity doesn't increase by inflation plus half a percent every year, to use one example from a local restaurant chain - but they could seriously be used to help reduce the effort people have to devote to more obvious tasks. We've seen how computer office suites helped out with white-collar productivity ten years ago; imagine the benefits that, for instance, a comprehensive encyclopedia software program could have for journalists and researchers.

Hugh Roanoke: I'd say that maybe - just maybe - it needs to be easier to let people with valid licenses and certifications from other places arrive here. The rule about teachers being allowed to have good degrees from abroad is a start - a twenty-year-old start, mind. I'd say the general principle would be to let anyone licensed under more stringent regulations abroad to work here in the licensed area, but I'll admit that would require a lot of categorisation and work by the Eleanorian Government and they might winnow it down a bit. Even that would be an improvement in certain areas.

Lydia Nicholls: More factory space. That, or Jessica gets Hannah on the phone and asks her if she can set up a Shooters Bar and Grill in the Broadlands area. Yes, I know; I was asked for one idea, not you.

Esther Launceston: I'd say my area of expertise when it comes to broader Eleanorian life is in what can be vaguely categorised as culture, that being where my mum still works. Not that presenting a meterological forecast quite counts as that - sorry, mum! - but the more fundamental parts of the sector are struggling to raise funds, promote themselves and, in some cases, exist. Prodding companies to support cultural initiatives, broadcast or live, would be a super-interesting concept; a lot of the people who'd bite would be from abroad, too, despite the current... lack of foreign investment. It'ld also obviously motivate them to do more with possibly more, which is a start!

Adam Denby: Get the pension age up to a good amount - over time, of course, so people don't bitch about it. I'm aware there isn't a compulsory retirement age, but there are plenty of people who'd like to work for longer without feeling like a drain on state resources, which is the last thing any Eleanorian will want to feel like until somebody invades us next. I don't think that'll happen, so the next best thing is cutting the pension bill.

Aaron Francis: Populating Saint Eleanor entirely with Bridget Coombes.

Harriet Williams: If the sales tax form isn't as simple as possible, make it simpler - or just abolish it and let the oil money roll in, given it only gives the economy about half a billion dollars every year. Small businesses in particular have, or should have, more existential things to do with their time than letting the Ministry of Finance know how much they're raking in, divided by twenty just in case.

Naresmet taFrexala: Don't call me an economist - these people know much more than I do - but I do not, do not, think that one change by itself is going to make people work harder, smarter, better and with more effect on the GDP. A wiser man than me, again, said you need to look at all the other factors first. I'm not even pretending to know what those other factors are.

Christina Fulton: I've said before that one of my friends from school is working on the oil fields out in the countryside. They're big - almost inordinately so, given the size of the workforce - and I'd say they're doing a good job at drilling the oil, getting it out and selling it at a little bit below fair market value. Or, if it's being shipped domestically, next to nothing! Where we're faltering is in making sure that the oversight process is lean, efficient, and generally top-notch. If the managers aren't doing their best job at ensuring that all the other processes are fit for purpose, we'll lag behind the rest of the world.

Rick Goldsmith: Get people into work, onto desks or proper physical sites, and tell them to work instead of slacking off wasting their time. That's what productivity means, doesn't it?

Arielle Richardson: Would it be unbecoming of me to say "import more agricultural workers?" There would obviously be a hint of backlash to any attempt to artificially boost our population for this purpose, given that 10% of the people live outside Saint Eleanor city, but maybe a few hundred more people could make a big difference to the situation and reduce prices on top of that. We make quite a fair bit of our own food, but some people believe we're a bit dependent on other nations for a full and balanced diet. The fact Torridge and Carey's boast of "only 100% Eleanorian milk in our ice cream" is seen as an achievement is quite something.

Corporal Denise Livingston: Stop the Army procurement scandal. Far too often, the general command just purchases products in bulk based on little more than aesthetics and feelings, not how they''ll work, how effective and cost-effective they are. A serious sea-change in attitudes to wholesaling needs to take place across the Army if we are to have any hope of not draining state resources that even I will admit could be better used for civilian programs.

Natalie Monaco: Oversee competition where competition can, and should, exist. There's a good reason why the Metro or Eleanorian Water should be in public hands or suchlike, for instance, those being obvious monopolies - so obvious that, when you sign a contract with the Regional Transit Corporation of Banija, you agree they have an exclusive license to the contracted services. Eleanorian Transit did everything itself, by the way. But in places like the buses and telecommunications where the monopoly is either state-imposed or just there because nobody else bothers, in that order, we should let other companies try their bit and see if they can pick up the slack. If they can't... that's what the state was always there for. I'm not that much of a neoliberal.

Melcheta Pazorzal: Make sure that the workers are properly educated rather than cutting corners and hoping people will fill in the gaps. Training before the job would be excellent, too - but anything that can make sure our workers can focus on work rather than panicking about how they might not have the right tools and skills to wrap everything up would be great. As I said, more time for working.

Priscilla Evans: Expand the National Liberation Arena. It's packed out for every national team game as it is; increasing ticket prices would be unpopular. Bigger stands - as it were - would pump more money into the economy, as I learned in secondary school back in Tinhampton: the constructors make money for the jobs, those foreigners get money for selling tools and material to the constructors, the FA makes money for good reason and the population's generally going to spend more. That means more money to promote, support and expand the game. The Saint Eleanor League might not get the full benefits directly, but as I've said, league ticket pricing is within the club's control, not the FAs.

Lieutenant Stephen Mitcham: I've told my dad, but I don't think I could tell you much more about the proceedings of the cabinet.
****** The Grand Republic of Saint Eleanor - area 2,863mi2, population 489,816, 1.6 cups of coffee/Eleanorian/day - it's 2000 (OOC: obvious Tinhampton puppet)
BoF76 quarterfinalists --- WC91 participants

Why? George Mitcham, General then and now, cofounded the National Liberation Front in 1971 to demand a free Saint Eleanor. He got his wish in '75 after a 15-month war: becoming President, appointing notable NLF friends and some charity's executive director as VPs and calling them legislators. He has retained power through oil money; zero income tax; free healthcare, schooling, public transport - and markets; tolerating dissent on apolitical matters; allowing private gun ownership (with plenty of training) to protect against future invasions; high-quality PR; and football.

Acastanha Yearly Kaleidoscope
The Man Made Accident

Human is a place of errors. That's why there's a phrase 'Human errors'. And this error can turn into a huge disaster. In this edition of Acastanha Kaleidoscope, we will look at some accidents that was caused by human errors.

Madeira Farmer's Market Fire

On the dust of 11th May 2023, the people's of Madeira was shocked with a fire burning the farmer's market building which located in the old town district. The market is the largest in the city. It is a place for farmers around the city to sell their commodities especially vegetables, meats and fruits. The fire was started in one of the kiosk at the third floor. 2 out of 3 floors were damaged. However the authority prevent the farmers and merchants to use the building for a moment. The market activities was then move to the city's square about 2km from the burnt market's located. Despite complaints coming in about the moves but the authority don't want to make a risk to use a burnt building.

Image

Investigation revealed that the burn was cause by a short circuit happening at the kiosk where the fire is started. It is caused by an amateur wire installations. The authority finally decided to renovate the building and repair all the wire installations so it is meet the safety standard. Currently, the building is still on construction and plan to be finished early next year. The new building is a five-storey building with the first floor is used as a parking lot.

The Madeira fire is not the only building's fire incident in the country. Data stated, there are more than 20 of the same incidents happened throughout the year. And short circuit placed on top of the reason of the fire accounting 65% of the total incidents. While negligence comes out at second.

Bahia Shipwrecked

The eastern shore of Acastanha is home to the country's famous cruise line. Several cities becomes the port of call such as Sagamarayn, Bahia and Campo de Recife. In late August, a ship was stranded in Bahia's waters. The city which located on a bay. The cruise ship, Santa Carolina which piloted by Captain Pedro Arraugo enter the bay at noon. Bahia's embarcadero have warn the captain to be more careful to enter the bay as the tides already lowering. They were also suggesting the captain to wait another 2 hours for the next high tide. But the captain keeps going on. The bay is quite narrow with the island of Pedra Branca block the bay with open sea. And as the tide on its lowest point, large ship usually prevent to enter.

Captain Arraugo was very confident that he could reached the port before the tide reached its lowest point. He also didn't want to wait for another 2 hours. The ship was success to went through the entrance of the bay. It moves steadily to the port. The embarcadero once again warn the captain to stop as the tide near the port can't be passed by large ship. But Captain Arraugo persistent with his calculation. And just 50 m from the port, the ship's hull scratch the coral rocks at the bay's floor. The captain stop the ship and immediately ordering the evacuation. The scratch was quite long. And water enter from the portside making the ship lean to the left.

Image

From the incident, Captain Arraugo was suspended from his duty. His stubbornness have cause a lot of damage for the cruise company and trauma for the passengers. The stranded ship was also blocking the bay entrance which prevent ships coming to the port. This causing the long line of ships entering the bay as Bahia is one of a major port in eastern Acastanha.

One of the most prestigious heavy metal festivals will once again take place in Miruan this summer: The Paladon Open Air. The Metal Observer will be covering the festival, as usual, but let's start at the beginning.

Image

For those unfamiliar with the festival, it was founded 26 years ago as a small evening show at the Moonlight Club in Miruan by a group of metalheads, who wanted to support local bands and give them a bigger audience. While the first few years were a fairly small affair, information about the festival began to spread and more bands expressed interest in playing, which, in turn, led to more fans interested in seeing them. Soon the Moonlight Club was getting too small to accommodate the number of fans wanting to attend, so the organizers began to search for a fitting venue and found a very unlikely location: A huge, abandoned amphitheatre on the outskirts of Miruan. It had been abandoned for decades and was in rather "used" condition, but that did not dampen the spirit. As money was tight, they started a campaign, asking for people to help and the reaction to the call to action was phenomenal, with hundreds of metalheads not just from the Miruan area, but from across Tikariot making the trek and pitching in. Several companies also donated money and building materials to convert basically a ruin into one of Tikariot's prime festival venues, complete with grasslands dedicated to camping.

Image

The organizers decided to incorporate as a company, Tiamat Productions, which would eventually not only oversee the festival but also tours across Tikariot and Pavola. Over the years, as the festival continued to grow, the event, by now called Paladon Open Air, expanded to two days and added a second stage outside of the amphitheatre, giving even more capacity for both bands and fans. Every year now metalheads from Tikariot and far beyond make the annual pilgrimage to the festival, with the 75,000 tickets often already sold out way ahead of the festival's traditional August weekend.

This year it will be the 27th edition of the festival and several bands have been announced already, so let's have a look at who is confirmed so far:

Image
Apocaliptica: Huayramarca's premier pagan black metal band, coming to Tikariot for the first time with their harsh yet epic sound.
Image
Ballistica: Tikariot's oldest thrash metal band is returning to the POA for their 20th-anniversary show. They have announced that they will be playing their iconic "Army of the Damned" in its entirety.
Image
Crimson Cavern: Avanaroch-based Crimson Cavern are making their debut at the festival, bringing their brand of brutal, cavernous death metal to Paladon.
Image
Demon Smile: If you like it fast and rough, then Port Tacassam's Demon Smile are for you. Fast and furious death/thrash with earth-shattering vocals.
Image
Fires of Asgard: Fires of Asgard are one of Tikariot's highest-rated folk metal bands, with heavy guitars, thunderous drums, violin, bagpipes and grand choirs, you better get your vocal chords in shape!
Image
Forgotten Epitaph: How slow can you go? Dhaencunor's slowest band is going to deliver doom metal at its finest.
Image
Hednisk: If a mix of harsh black metal and pagan melodies is up your forest, then Hednisk are here for you, escaping the desolate Xarkian forests to bring their frosty touch to Miruan.
Image
Hypothesis: Cape Shetma's progressive metal masters Hypothesis are going to cause some strains to you brain with their complex song structures and dazzling instrumental prowess.
Image
Iron Curtain: Tikariot's godfathers of heavy metal are back for another sonic attack with pumping basslines and soaring vocals this will be a celebration of all things that are heavy
Image
Legion of Paladon: Dive into the deep history of Paladon with Legion of Paladon, a power metal band with historical lyrics that will transport you onto the battlefields of old
Image
Maledict: A meeting of opposites comes from Oberour Ar Moro with Maledict. Marrying the harsh dissonance and speed of black metal with the mellow and spacy soundscapes of shoegaze.
Image
Razorblade Sigh: Fast, heavy, epic. This sums up Razorblade Sigh from Carathyr, merging the heavier end of power metal with the more melodic side of thrash into a tasty, if heavy concoction.
Image
Saboteurs of Oblivia: Coming all the way from Qasden, Saboteurs of Oblivia will deliver a true horror show with their penchant for the macabre, complete with a spectacular stage show that is a real sight to behold.
Image
Serpents Cross: One of Tikariot's up and coming bands, Serpents Cross have sold out venues all across the nation with their take on traditional heavy metal, infusing it with influences from classical music and an impressive triple voice attack. Just for this show, they will also bring a full choir!
Image
Serrated Scalpel: Merciless death metal, skirting the realms of grindcore, is what Serrated Scalpel from Morannon are known for. With surgical precision they will slice and dice the audience with their trademark buzzsaw guitar sound.
Image
Tiempos de Gritos: Gritty thrash metal from Montaña Verde. Riding the rougher edge of the genre, Tiempos de Gritos are fast and abrasive.
Image
Tiwaztru: Tiwaztru are a folk metal collective with varying cast around the Nygg brothers. The draw their lyrics from Capnordic historical events and are noted for their use of forgotten instruments.
Image
Uppreisn: Hailing from Græntfjall, Uppreisn mix hardcore into their brand of thrash metal, delivering a furious sound, but with impressive musicianship.
Image
Thuriandra: Walking the tightrope between melodic black and death metal, Thuriandra from Oriannor channel the snow-capped harshness of the mountain ranges of their home and infuse it into melodic guitar runs while the vocals will send shivers down your spine.

Make sure to check back for more updates, because there still are many more bands to be confirmed for the Paladon Open Air!

OOC: Graphic disclaimer, all logos have been made with NI (even if the "i" might be questionable in some cases).

"So you just... grab this shiny-looking stone and..." Erin grunted, "very gently place it in this hole right here," he continued as he pounced on the shard of Fortunatium. "And there you go. Ready to go. Now we just set off the nuclear explosion over here," he explained as he punched the side of the gun a few times. The gun—which actually resembled a crossbow more than anything—suddenly made a tremendously loud noise and came to life, glowing a very bright green. "Got it? It's imperious that you get this right, Löír."

"Of course, madame!" Löír enthusiastically shouted. He quickly imitated the Québecois' approach to loading the weapon, to great success. His gun shone just as bright.

"Fantastic work. Have the higher-ups already given you a run-down on what to do with this?" Erin asked.

"Uh, no." Löír pondered for a second. "Shooty-shooty-shoot? Kill Farolerans?"

"Sort of and yes, respectively. But you need to be tactical about it. We don't get too many of these. They're Szoirsian gifts and they're in short supply. One shot and you can take out a couple thousand Farolerans and demoralize tens of thousands more. Their vehicles will all be busted. They'll probably retreat in a hurry and we can swoop in and scorch the earth where their supply lines used to be. It's imperious, therefore, that we don't miss."

Löír looked down at the weapon. "My local gang never got anything like this. I can only shoot normal guns."

"Well, the higher-ups said you were a splendid shot, so you can probably fire a mini-nuke too."

"Mini-nuke?"

"Shush, just watch." She told her apprentice as she aimed at the advancing Faroleran forces. Over the last month, they'd managed to outmaneuver them really hard and make them retreat back to the outsides of Ômên. Mostly because Farolerans are sort of fighting a race war here and Ômên has a ton of them that can be taken hostages. But they'd outmaneuvered them nonetheless.

From high up in one of the few tall-ish buildings in Ômên—a staggering fifteen meters above ground—she could very easily make out the Faroleran army's advancing forces. She could spot the tanks, the very graceless and suicidal infantry, the cavalry Alex Terán had doubled down on all those years ago... it was all up for grabs for her. She just had to pull the trigger. "Wait, Löír, do tell me. Have you ever killed before?"

"Yes, madame."

"Have you ever killed thousands of people?"

"Yes, madame."

Erin flinched. Even after familiarizing herself with the battlefield and having lived years in Rülândéá, she was still occasionally prone to forgetting how bad it could get. That or the kid was very bad at math. "Do you know how much a thousand is, Löír?"

"Yes, madame. About 10.62% of the advancing forces, is my guess. The higher-ups likely highlighted my aptitude for math and estimating enemy forces. I'd be quite surprised if they hadn't.

Erin, having only skimmed the report on him, took him at his word. "Good, then. You'll be killing thousands more." She lifted the weapon with both hands, aimed carefully, then pulled the trigger. The initial nuclear explosion burst into life, multiplying in power by several orders of magnitude, to the point that it looked like it could barely be contained anymore. Still, it was as if it could not escape a three-inch wide sphere around the Fortunatium shard. "Something about quantum tunneling, in case you're wondering," Erin told Löír, not knowing what those words meant and just repeating what she'd been told. Löír nodded respectfully but not any more illuminated in the slightest, since he knew fuck-all about quantum physics.

Soon enough, the Fortunatium shard was slang across the sky, carrying the nuclear explosion with it. The sphere quickly expanded in radius. The panic in the Faroleran forces was evident as they started to scatter. The weapon's descent was painfully slow, but not slow enough—it gave you the time needed to contemplate imminent death, but not the time needed to escape it or to accept it. An enormous explosion destroyed everything in its radius, killing at least one-half of the Faroleran forces deployed, and scattering the rest, who started a valiant tactical retreat.

"Wow, that was... wow. You killed like four thousand... three-hundred and seventy... five, give or take twenty..." Löír raised an eyebrow. "Best I ever managed with one shot was ten, and that included two pairs of siamese twins."

Erin pushed the weapon into Löír's chest violently, making him stagger back. He recomposed himself, his emaciated frame making it difficult, betraying his talent for killing people. "This is mine now?"

"Yes, higher-ups say you're a better shot than me and that I'd be of better use elsewhere. Have at it, but bear in mind we don't get many of these. Make every shot count." Erin looked back at the chaos she'd left in her wake. "Though, for what it's worth, it does seem like the Szoirsians are giving us heavier weaponry every week. I'd have needed like five blasts to achieve this effect in the early days."

Löír looked down at the weapon, curious. "What powers this thing?"

"Uhh... some Szoirsian mineral that can only be produced with nukes. Also, nukes. Also, the higher-ups say the weapons have become 10% more powerful ever since Hannasea sent a 'fuckton' of Thoughts and Prayers, whatever that means."

Löír looked down at the weapon once more, puzzled. "That doesn't make any sense."

"Oh, so now you're starting to question things. I'm sorry, how old are you?"

"I'll be turning eleven in six days."

"Well, it's almost eleven years too late to start questioning how Farfadillis works, kid. Get used to it," Erin sentenced, before heading for the exit.

A conversation between Uxtamazata Neapolis, Amatticus Saulius
and Avarmai Orbeliani

"I guess one win isnt soo bad. We managed to stay in 6th place"

"We underperformed big time, The media is going to be soo mad at us for this, I say we continue to enjoy this pool while we can."

"The reason we got this pool was because of our underpreformance, they were defenitly right about the morale thing though, those lossess really sucked, especially when they were my fault."

"You were still the best player on our team in the qualifiers by far. I hope the rest of us can pick up the slack"

"Neopolis don't act like you weren't sitting in the stands for the last two games, you and Salius both could have been a huge help."

"Trust me If I had it my way I wouldnt be sitting in the stands"

"We managed to win a game though so Im happy with that, I wonder how the rest of the team is feeling."

"Knowing them theyve probably forgotten about the preformance weve had as of late, which is a good thing. The less demoralized we are the better chance we have of winning the next one

Other team members could be seen discussing family, video games, movies, and other casual topics. The Srubnaya team was rested up and ready for the next couple of matches, hoping to make it past the first elimination round this time unlike in other games.

Eramanian oil tanker missing in Panjang Strait

Pasirpura: An oil tanker went missing in Panjang Strait, yesterday, said Maritime Eraman.

The oil tanker registered in Eraman carries a load of 350,000 tonnes of crude oil and is operated by 20 crew departed from Pasirpura Port, Eraman 10 days ago and was supposed to arrive in Ziwana yesterday.

Director of Maritime Eraman, Bambang Wibawa said the last location of this ship was detected 8 days ago when it entered the waters of Samudera Darussalam from Sharktail waters. Still, so far he has not yet received a response from the authorities of Samudera Darussalam and Sharktail regarding the loss of the oil tanker.

However, he refused to make any speculations about the ship's fate, whether it was hijacked by pirates or faced with technical problems due to weather factors.

"We don't want to make any assumptions about what happened without getting a clear picture or information because in the sea all kinds of things can happen," he said.

Inside the Florus Convention Center in Altendalur, Græntfjall, the delegates attending the CORNCOB convention were gathered to hear Brynjúlfur Brynjarsson, foreign minister of the host nation, propose the implementation of a cap and trade system. Among them was the Environment Secretary of Darmen, Jerred Crewe, who had recovered — mostly — from the brazen attack of the Plump Camp. Several showers had been necessary to remove the stench that had enveloped Crewe following the Geese's attack, but Crewe couldn't help but notice that the delegate seated next to him, the President of Kirungabi, Innocent Uburiganya, had moved his seat further away from Crewe compared to before the incident.

As Brynjarsson finished presenting his cap and trade proposal, the delegates took turns to respond, with some in favor and some against. It came time for Crewe to give Darmen's response.

"Let me begin by thanking Minister Brynjarsson for putting forth a..."

HONK HONK HONK

"...reasonable proposal that helps bring about a reduction in carbon emissions, promotes innovation and protects economic advancement..."

HONK HONK

"...the proposal has the Republic of Darmen's full support. I should also like to take this time to express my gratitude to the other delegates of this convention..."

HONK HONK HONK

"...for their understanding in approving the removal of protections of migratory geese..."

HONK HONK

It was at this point that the other delegates noticed Crewe flinch as the Plump Camp circled above the Convention Center, preparing to perform a fly by protest. Crewe even looked at the head of his security detail, located a few seats behind him, for reassurance. The nod he received was not nearly as reassuring as he had hoped it would be.

HONK HONK HONK

The growing crescendo of honks from the Plump Camp, especially that of the harrowing Branta branta who had left their nesting grounds around Lake Branta and crossed the Vaia Sea and Komodo Channel in record time, was now getting so loud that Crewe was forced to raise his voice just so the rest of the delegates could hear him.

HONK HONK

"...perhaps it would be wise..."

HONK HONK

Crewe took a sip of water and tried with all of his might to prevent himself from diving under the table in fear. He briefly thought about making a proposal of his own, that the assembled nations ready their air forces for the Great Rushmori Goose Cull of 2058, but thought better of it once he figured that would only antagonize the Geese even further and was probably outside the purview of CORNCOB.

HONK HONK HONK

"...if this convention also took some time to consider the positive benefits of nuclear power. My own country will, in the coming years, be building and starting up its first reactor in several decades to help alleviate our electricity deficit..."

HONK HONK

"...and I understand that the delegate sitting next to me," Crewe acknowledged President Uburiganya, "is making efforts of his own to bring nuclear power to his country."

HONK HONK

"I would therefore like to propose that any final agreement reached by this convention include a provision that signatories make a contribution to a scientific research endowment that would provide funding for research into nuclear fusion technology..."

HONK HONK HONK

"...to help continue to propel all Rushmori nations into a future full of clean, safe and sustainable nuclear power. Thank you."

HONK HONK

Crewe breathed a sigh of relief. Not only had he completed his response to Brynjarsson's proposal but the Plump Camp appeared to have moved on. He was safe.

HONK!

Crewe's sense of security crumbled quickly and he only slightly overreacted in front of the assembled delegates.

ROSE RINGS CHANGES, REAPS REWARD
Singh on song as Eurans tuck in ten from two

Euran national team manager Sterling Rose has overseen a much needed pair of victories to kick off the second half of qualifying for World Cup 93 – but Eura remain moored in fifth place in a tight group. Also, we keep alliterating and we don’t know why. Maybe it was Sophie Singh’s hat-trick that broke us.

After the dire defeats to Osarius and New Gelderland that left the Rose regime reeling (ok, we’ll stop now), the former Bastion manager responded to criticism of his inconsistent team selection by fielding an almost full strength side against Bongo Johnson, bar Patrick Read replacing the suspended Ana Mason. The change in approach immediately paid dividends as Alex Sharp rounded the opposition goalkeeper to put Eura 1-0 up in the 7th minute, before a lovely Adam Woodman strike doubled the lead.

The home team did pull back a clumsy goal from a corner that left Tom Hammond looking perplexed – and fuming with his defenders – and yet the game was sown up by half time when Sophie Singh cleverly flicked the ball over the line from Woodman’s low cross. Woodman, player of the match by some margin, would win a penalty for Eura in the 60th minute that Oscar Vincent converted with ease, before the Directus winger scored his second goal, this time latching onto a long ball from Read, outpacing two chasing defenders and chipping the goalkeeper to make it 5-1.

If some suspected that the “play your best team and worry about fitness later” strategy was a one off for the 11th match of qualifying, they would be proven wrong as Rose selected another strong team for the 12th. Rouyoute put up a sterner fight than Eura’s previous opponents, sitting deep and defending like their lives depended on it. It worked for a while. Then Eura won a corner in the run up to half time, and both Sophie Singh and Lucy Almwood quickly conferred with assistant manager Roland Hopkins on the touchline, receiving tactical instructions before returning to the pitch.

Whatever it was that Hopkins said worked wonders. Almwood took the corner after a supposed squabble over its ownership. She then feinted a full delivery, but instead cut the ball low to the near post as Singh was still striding innocently towards the box, though actually she must have known what was coming. Singh twisted on the spot as the ball came to her, collecting with her left boot and dragging the ball forward towards the back line from nowhere, throwing the defence off balance completely. She cut the ball back and Owen James was waiting to whack it home. Singh dispossessed a defender rather fortuitously only a couple of minutes after play resumed and went through on goal to calmly bury a second.

That quick-fire double took the pressure off Eura for the rest of the game against a Rouyoute team that struggled to carve out a persistent period of possession (sorry!) Singh had a second soon after half time, this time from the unlikely source of her forehead, after which Eura took their foot off the gas and conserved their energy. In the late stages Rose made some substitutions in search of more goals, with the format of these qualifiers meaning that goal difference could be all important. Sub Dean Barnes delivered, beating a defender with a delightful nutmeg and creating the space to feed Singh for her hat-trick goal, a simple tap-in.

“Excuse me? What the fuck did you just say to me?”
“Ouch!” quipped one of the Prime Minister’s advisers’ as the translation came through. “Die Chancellor ist sehr sehr pissed offen, ja?” Barnham shot a glare at the cocky adviser that communicated exactly how career limiting that joke had been without saying a single word.
The adviser went red and stepped back into the group of several watching on.
Barnham composed himself.
“Chancellor Pult, let us look at the facts. You have had a good run of power without the legitimacy of the people’s consent. For a while you did that without arousing popular unrest. We have worked with you in the past under prior administrations here in Bastion and were prepared to continue doing so…”
“But?”

Pult’s presumptuous but correct interjection threw Barnham off momentarily before he relocated his train of thought.
“…but it’s very clear you have put yourself in an irrecoverable position and your continued rule is threatening to blow up into anarchy. Your people need stability. You should tender your resignation and let the opposition organise fresh elections, pick up whatever assets you have and leave the country.” Barnham got a look from a couple of his team that told him he was missing something out, something he was reluctant to say. He let the next words exit his mouth through gritted teeth, as if they were being dragged out. “If you are worried about your safety, the United Federation is willing to offer you sanctuary, if that is what it takes to ensure a peaceful transition of power.”
Wunderbar! mouthed the same adviser from earlier. I’m sacking him the moment I put this phone down thought the Prime Minister.

The Ticker arrived in the room at this moment, sticking to the shadows in the back of the room as the evening drew in. Pult had gone very quiet. Eventually, he spoke again. “Prime Minister, for the sake of relations between our two countries, I shall pretend you have not spoken such words. My country is me and I am my country. Before me it was being fleeced by foreign interests and criminals. I have restored the living standards we once took for granted. The people love me!”
“And yet, they’re in the streets of Graz, burning cars and packing out the main squares. Chancellor – Hans – how can you possibly know what the people think of you when you have spent two decades gutting your institutions, undoing the independence of the judiciary, politicising the police, appointing stooges to universities and hospitals, eventually stopping any new elections? You have lost touch, Hans. The people tolerated it once, but they have had enough of your rule.”

A Euran leader had not spoken to an Austroslovakian premier in this manner in a very long time. The Chancellor did not take it well.
“Who are you to tell me about my country and my people? To hell with you, Prime Minister! I knew it. I knew there were forces working against me. I am just glad you are admitting it.”
Euran intelligence was normally peerless in its reach and accuracy. Somehow, they had failed to pick up on Chancellor Pult having descended into extreme paranoia over the last two years.
“I have no idea what you are talking about, Chancellor. Let’s keep focused on the real world here.”
“Yes, yes, it all makes sense. The financiers and politicos roaming around the region – they are all beholden to the Bastion payroll when it comes down to it. Of course, our currency goes down the toilet at this time of all times, and we start having rioters and subversives come out into the open, all of this agitation - and now you are making your move. ”

“Chancellor, allow me to be quite explicit with you, because I’m worried you are not understanding me here. There is no conspiracy against you, not from Eura anyway. We have tolerated you for many years and co-operated with you when necessary. That time is over. The bargain is null and void. You need to give your people a say in their future and end this increasingly violent stand-off. You are aware, of course, that there are millions of Eurans in your country.”
“Yes, despite my best efforts to send them packing. We should never have let your fifth column infiltrate us. Our previous sympathy for the plight of your refugees was misplaced. I should warn you Prime Minister, your forces may dwarf ours, but the average Austroslovakian soldier will be ready to bleed the Euran Army white!”

“Hans, please, keep your head! I was not suggesting any kind of military action. But I am suggesting that, if you continue down this path, you will be directly endangering Euran citizens in larger numbers. I cannot allow that. There would be other consequences. Sanctions. A public call for your removal. Direct support to your opponents. And, no matter what kind of mob is at your gates, no safe sanctuary in Eura, not once you’ve spurned us. This is a one time offer.”
Barnham had given up any pretence of being a messenger of ‘tough love’ steering a friend away from danger. If this idiot couldn’t be persuaded to understand the crisis he was creating, then he’d have to be frightened out of his myopic bubble. Sadly, the Chancellor wasn’t going to bite.
“Prime Minister, this is an outrageous act of arrogance, an imperial attitude on your part, an outright attack on the sovereignty of my people’s government. I am not going anywhere no matter what or who you send at me. Goodbye.”

The line went dead. Even deader once Barnham had hurled his mobile phone at the wall, splitting it into lots of tiny pieces, one of the few times in his life he’d ever let out rage in a physical manner.
“Everyone out. Now. OUT!”
His staff obeyed quickly and without complaint. Except for, well, you can guess who.
“Prime Minister, I hope this has been an illustrative learning experience” the Ticker said smugly, as if he were trying his hardest to earn a slap, “and that you will now accept the need for alternative measures to achieve your goals.”
“Alternative measures? No – we will sanction that bloody idiot until the cows come home. He won’t last more than a month. Assuming the protestors don’t hang him from the Chancellery balcony first.”
“Prime Minister do not delude yourself. Do you really think this is a leader who will go quietly because you take away his yacht in Falourr?”
Barnham rubbed his eyes to make sure he was not in a bad dream and was very disappointed to find out that, yes, he really was going to have to take advice of this odious worm.
“The dark arts?” he asked, as if he didn’t know the answer.
“The dark arts, Prime Minister. The dark arts.”
