Albion Deny Treble on Last Day
Last day drama as Catamouge sink to second tier
For all the talk at halfway, Italia's season stuttered and Albion managed to salvage a trophy out of what was looking like a lackluster season. This season did lack some of the drama we might have hoped for, whilst Albion and Italia usually have the top 2 spots reserved, the fight for Challenger Cup places looked wide open halfway through the season, with everyone down to 9th in a reasonable position to qualify. In the end AS Samita and Scolastico had these places sown up in advance of the final day. There was drama to be found down the bottom, as AS Catamouge didn't get the results required to stay in the first tier, whilst the Island Trophy final produced some entertainment as Albion denied Italia the treble.
Let's start at the top, Italia had been in imperious form in the first half of the season, 17 points clear and defeated only once they looked like they might steamroller the league. It didn't end up being so, with 45 points from the first 18 giving way to 33 points from the second half. There was talk they might regret some of the loan moves for 'fringe' players, Rossa Capello heading to FC Campina, where she struggled to make an impact, and Singh Gach heading to AS Samita where he shone. With injuries then coming to wingers Beluigi and Rotolo, as well as Leonida Clifton unexpectedly heading on maternity leave, there was a sudden dearth of options. Garonzi was forced to fit in on the wings, as was attacking midfielder Sam Depel.
This would've been fine, but the hole in midfield caused real issues. Depel was tried there, but failed to screen effectively. Mario Freschi stepped up as a centre-back, but he was missed in the back line. Eventually, talented left-back Monico Rossellini was tried and helped stem the flow, with Benni Musco covering with a reasonable level of competence. Whilst this was resolved, it was not after some serious misfires, including soul-sapping 2-0 defeats to a limited Sablegaard and a Benedetti-less Catamouge.
Albion, meanwhile, held their squad together over the winter. Paul Reynard's job seemed to be on the line after the first half of the season, not helped by the late January Super Cup defeat to Italia. Reynard seemed to eventually make some changes to his lineup that worked. The struggling Jimmy Dickinson dropped to the bench for a while, giving Luke Cook a chance to shine, and when Dickinson he returned he finally hit form again. Len Phillips also found himself rotated for the attacking Josephine Sellers, who went from only appearing off the bench to making a total of 12 starts, including 3 in the run to the Island Trophy. She aided breaking down the packed defences and provided the service Jackie Froggatt needed. Froggatt's rich vein of form continued, hitting 30 goals in all competitions and winning the Player's Player of the Season.
Whilst Albion's improved league form, the best in the league for the second half of the year, certainly cheered fans up, it was the Island Trophy that truly brought them joy. It was no easy run, all their opponents were from the top tier and there were some big tests along the way. AS Samita put up stern resistance in the 3rd Round, they looked like taking it to a replay before Sellers provided a long-range effort that surely cemented her place in the first team. The Semi-Final against Hellenic SC was a particularly tasty pair of fixtures.
As tradition dictates, these were played on neutral turf, with fans getting to experience two very atmospheric grounds. First up was Sablegaard's La Cauchie (The Pier), a stadium both compact and close to the sea. Albion twice took the lead, Froggatt bending in from an improbable angle and Dick Anderson tapping in, but twice they were pegged back as Maria Grosso headed home twice from corners. The replay came at Sallust Park, AS Samita's ground. This time Albion went thorugh the gears, eventually dispatching their opponents 4-0 with Froggatt, Phoebe Harris, Ike Clarke and Sellers all taking a goal and an assist each.
The final was a tense affair, Italia and Albion scrapping in a midfield battle for the ages. Eventually Vita Speight was put on a yellow, robbing Italia of the factor that was levelling the game for them. Froggatt again was the difference, a school captain's performance eventually rewarded with the winning and converting of a penalty to deny their rivals the treble they craved.
Down the bottom and it was FC Campina and AS Catamouge who were to feel the sting of relegation. FC Campina had enjoyed a great start to the season, surprisingly clear of the relegation zone, with former National Team manager Giovanne Varisco leading the way and helping them to secure the loan move of Rossa Capello from his former club. Then, the collapse. Key players Drake on the wing, Marichioni at entre-back and Buono in midfield all sustained injuries that kept them out for over 2 months each. Campina collapsed, taking only 11 points from the second half of the season, 5 from the last 14 and enduring a run of 6 consecutive defeats (although 3 were by 1 goal only).
Catamouge, meanwhile, had a much stronger end to the season, but fell short after their disasterous early season form. Pierre Rossi had come in as manager after only 4 games, and after a terrible run until midway he started to make some headway. Catamouge actually had the 5th best form in the league during the second half of the campaign, and in one stretch took 12 points across 5 games with Vesper Benedetti bagging 6 goals across this, and a total of 20 for the season. However, it wasn't to be enough. As Munster pegged them back to 1-1 on the 35th matchday, their fate was out of their hands, requiring Munster to lose to FC Campina and win over Hellenic. Neither result went their way, they now face a spell in the 2nd tier and a rebuild, with Benedetti and Matilde Pizan heading for the door, and Lauretta Hightower looking likely to go as well.
