On the style of play:
-Our (outside) centre usually(95,0% of the time) plays as an additional full-back,so our 5/8(a.k.a. inside centre) will be the only player on that position.
-Our attacking system is firstly based on drop goals,so in a game we score 15 points it's more likely to be 5 drop goals, than 3 tries without conversions.

Blog Series: Rugby Union World Cup 34.

♡ Part 1 (You are here)

Greetings my lovies!

It has happened brothers and sisters, it has happened! Our Boys in Blue has finally been invited to the grand stage which is the Rugby Union World Cup! Well, invited back actually, after ceasing with all sports codes and public events due to the large scale terror campaign against our beloved nation, just preceeding World Cup 29. We failed to make a proper showing in that cup anyway, so let's ignore those days and focus on our new bright future, shall we!? Besides, if our new domestic league is an indicator of success by any means, I say our future does seem very bright indeed.

So, this rendition is to be hosted within The Guild Federation of Hannasea, located upon the Esportivan supercontinent. Now, as a self identifying world traveller and anthropologist, I feel I need to share some fun facts about my first few days of my journey here.

So, I arrived by air, three days before the Cup's opening. I landed at the only international Airport of the nation, known as the Coconut Island Airport. This is a serene geographic location, absolutely ruined by one serious flaw… It is the only international airport of the nation… Despite the friendly and competent staff trying their very best to process the legions of visitors, our sheer numeric mass swamped the poor folks, causing me to spend 9 hours to get off the plane, pass through customs and ferry to the mainland. 9 Hours!!!

Once upon the mainland, the sheer beauty of the land managed to calm my nerves, and chill my bones, right into my soul. You see, this country is the proud owner of an Alpine climate, thus my tropical bones are not a fan. Not a fan in the slightest. Silver lining however: I get to rock out my absolute jaw droppingly gorgeous leather jacket, which is a rare opportunity. If you can manage to defy the terrible cold, the pure spirituality of the surrounding nature will humble you. Seriously, the picturesque landscape of the shimmering coastlines and the green misty mountains on the horizon is the very definition of romance. It also helps that the clean is as clear as the conscious of a monk. No kidding - there's nada cars. Like.. Zilch. Luckily, as a popular tourist destination, they have mastered the art of public transportation, and I have taken up the art of the bicycle when within urban lines, and allow me to digress, but this has done wonders for working off months of over indulgence in food and drink upon my leg and butt areas… Hehe.

So I found myself in the city of Portsmore and have explored the area thoroughly in my time here. It's easy to get around as the natives all speak Common (English), and they are all in general, a very open minded, chilled and friendly folk. They are also generally very business minded. So a lot of similarities with Port Emberians!

Okay I have dragged you along for long enough now…Rugby news!

Port Emberian Rugby World Cup Run: News from over there

Natanians and Nosts Vs Port Ember

Port Ember 41 - 24 Natanians and Nosts

The Port Emberians Dragons opened their return to international rugby, and the World Cup, by facing off against the highest ranked squad in the group, and the 5th ranked in the world (!!). No jokes here. Well except for the fact that our lads actually won the bloody game!

Once seated upon the stands, impatiently awaiting the opening whistle, I could contemplate on my physical condition, which was quite terrible. My head was mere moments from bursting like a watermelon, mind was hazy, eyes were vampiric in the dim sunlight and cheeks were flushed. Yet, somehow, I felt alive, even more so than the day I was born! (Late night hehe). Even the ever present cold was flushed from my bones.

The atmosphere emanating from the supporters was absolutely electrifying and utterly contagious. The massive stadium had drawn an ocean of a crowd to its hallowed halls, filled to the brim with Port Emberian blue jerseys.

Anyway, the long awaited whistle sounded off, with cheers erupting. The game was fast paced and physical from the gates, with the N&N's maintaining possession from the start, constantly running the ball straight into the Port Emberian defence, only to be knocked backwards with very physical tackles, basically like running into a stone wall - a stone wall which hits back. With steel gloves.

The pace remained impressively high-octane for the entire first half, bar for the last 10 minutes, where pain and fatigue finally claimed its toll on both squads. With plenty side steps, interceptions and physical blow-outs later, the first half came to an end with nothing in it for both squads, pulling equal at 21 points each.

The second half was even harder played by both sides, the game nearly breaking down into fist fights more than once, as tempers flared due to the physical nature of the match, yet somehow remaining on the clean side. Kudos to the ref who kept the boys in check with his temper tantrums.

The Port Emberians conceded a converted penalty kick early in the second half, yet turned it around quickly, managing to sneak past the defence time and again, dominating play until the final whistle, slotting away two more converted tries, and two converted penalty kicks, awarded due to collapsed scrums .

With the end of the match came the realisation that we had done it. We have caused one of the greatest upsets one could possibly imagine.

Elmyia Stun Hosts at the Death
Last Minute Gavalas Try Gives Elmyia Crucial Win

Elmyia left it late to secure a memorable first Rugby World Cup victory, with Gavalas breaking through minutes from time to give Elmyia the lead and break Hannsean hearts. The victory sets them up well for their campaign, leaving many to dream about the possibility of a first knock-out appearance.

It was a topsy-turvy contest, both sides exchanging leads as the game went on, with a tense start giving way to compelling viewing either side of half-time. Elmyia showed their improvement from their last appearance in this competition, with the improvements to the forward line showing in their ability to win and retain possession at crucial times. Particularly heartening will be the performance of Joan Tanner at scrum-half. Often looking lost in the contest last time out, she was imperious today. A player totally lacking in flair, she linked the forward line to the backs sensibly, kept her team in position and used her kicking at optimal moments to pin Hannsea back.

The early stages were dominated by the kicking game, a sight somewhat unfamiliar to most Elmyian Rugby fans, penalties were exchanged and little attempt was made for a try by either side, until a bursting run by William Dean conjured up a first try for Hannsea and left them 11-6 up at halftime. With the game so tight, the tension at Swordbreak Road seemed to ripple around.

The second half saw the contest truly open up, Schroeder converting two penalties early in the half saw a decisive response. Johnston bagged Elmyia's first try after a clever bit of passing between the backs, this was then followed up by a concerted spell of pressure, with the forward line putting in the dirty work, ultimately rewarded by prop Stanley hauling the ball just over the line. Elmyia now looked in control, 21-14 ahead. However, things were far too open for it to stay this way, Hannsea scoring successive tries in the 62nd and 66th minutes, both curtesy of Ethan Price coming round the outside and overloading the Elmyian rearguard.

Hannsea might have thought they'd won the contest at this point, 28-21 ahead in front of a partisan crowd with just 14 minutes remaining. Elmyia clearly had other ideas, Sparks pulling back 3 with a penalty to leave the contest within 4 points. With a try required the pressure piled forward, again Tanner marshalled her forwards well at the breakdown, and Elmyia went through multiple phases. Eventually, Gavalas found the space, piling through and giving Elmyia the lead 29-28 on 77 minutes. Sparks once again converted, and Elmyia managed to regain the ball and put it back out of possession.

The shock was palpable after the game, Hannsea had been squeezed out on home turf, and Elmyia will take heart from such a dramatic victory. Elsewhere and Nova Anglicana delivered a thorough pasting of second seeded Darmen. Observers remain unsure of whether this is good or bad news for Elmyia, either the second seeds look vulnerable, or the first seeds look beyond imperious. Elmyia face Crimson Tree, who suffered a narrow defeat to fellow newcomers Sykros in their opening fixture.

Rugby World Cup: Kelssek player flies home to bail out parents accused in coup plot

A national team rugby player is coming home from competing for Kelssek at the Rugby World Cup after his parents were arrested in a nationwide police operation against an alleged terrorist organization charged with a conspiracy to assassinate the Federal President, Kelssek’s ceremonial head of state, and conduct a coordinated attack on the federal Parliament and key Neorvins landmarks.

Over 150 plotters in the Ever Loyals network, which prosecutors claim was plotting to overthrow the confederal republic and restore the Guedian dynasty, were rounded up in a massive police operation three days ago. Much confusion still remains because many of the accused have attempted to stymie court proceedings by insisting that only their “corporate person” is being charged with a crime, that their detention violates their “natural eccelesiatical rights”, and in at least four cases, repeatedly screaming that the judge is trying to entice them into slavery.

Mikkon Bradley was initially said to have been leaving Hannasea shortly after Kelssek’s win against Lisander after a “burglary” at his family home near Gwyd Clithe in southern Noua Cymru, 250 km from Neorvins. The Kelssek rugby camp in Hannasea later clarified this was in fact a police raid on his parents’ rural property and there had been a “miscommunication” as to the reasons for his departure.

Bradley scored a try in that first match but it now looks like that will be all the contribution he’ll be able to make. Sources close to the player said that Mikkon will be acting as surety for his parents, who were both remanded into custody when proposed bail arrangements fell apart due when it emerged the proposed surety was living in their van. Mikkon’s return to Kelssek would allow him to post bail and take responsibility for ensuring they comply with any judicial conditions before a trial date, a process likely to take up to a year.

The elder Bradleys face charges that include unlawful drilling (running unauthorized milita training), possession of explosives for a criminal purpose, firearms offences, and consipracy to criminal mischief. Police seized rifles, pistols, and pipe bombs from a shed in their backyard. Prosecutors at their bail hearing said they had allowed the Ever Loyals to use their property as a training and logistics base, supplied firearms and ammunition to the group, and were preparing to use their tractors to cut the federal capital off from the Pernalwa military base by barricading the highway while the group’s assault on government buildings could take place.

Trevor Holt, an expert on domestic extremist organizations at the University of Southern Noua Cymru said this is a big difference from past experience with such groups, including the last armed group which bombed the Trades Union Congress headquarters and kidnapped a foreign diplomat.

“The PLF [Patriotic Liberation Front] attacks were really quite old-school in that most of the plotters were in a kind of pre-social media mode. They were recruited and radicalized through meetings, pamphlets, passing around extremist literature. You could say this is the first serious incident of the new kind that this country’s had to deal with.”

Holt says it’s not unusual that participants are now coming from seemingly comfortable, land-owning or professional backgrounds.

“This group was not really the disaffected or down and out with a grievance against the system, this type of movement tends to be people who fall into extremism and violence precisely becuase they have something to lose and think the government is going to come after their land and wealth. Which is exactly what happens when you start stockpiling weapons and planning to kill people.”

Holt also said it was "interesting" that information released by law enforcement in the wake of the arrests suggests the plotters had mostly symbolic and ceremonial targets.

“If I were going to launch a coup, which is not something I’d ever do, I wouldn’t target a figurehead president who is one of any number of candidates nominated by a supermajority vote of the lower house of parliament and then subject to popular election for a five-year term. I’d focus on getting the military and police on my side and taking control of media outlets and crucial infrastructure.”

Quebec and Shingoryeo Rugby Union National Team

Nickname: Grim Reapers
Acronym: QUE
Denonym: Quebecois (Preferred), Quebecer (that's fine)
Official Supporters Group: The Bubonic Plague
Style Mod: Lowest Possible (usually -5)

Head Coach: Philippe Leonard, 65
Lead Assistant Coach: Merrick-Lee Lessard, 42

The smaller pie rugby world has won in the Quebecois sporting world has meant that the rugby, as a whole, has taken greater approaches to play professionally alongside other nations in the Quebecois Commonwealth, whose interest and financials allow for international travels. Most of the members of the Quebecois and the Acadianan national teams do play in the Quebecois Commonwealth Rugby SuperLeague, a 16-team league of four associations (Quebec and Shingoryeo, Quebecois Acadiana, Busoga Islands and Quebecois Sudafrique nations which have their own West Indies situation). Because of this, however, it takes greater efforts for the national team camps or schedules to be put together, and the team's cohesion will likely take years to develop over time.

Nobody knows how this group of party-loving scrubs, whose reputation at home and abroad aren't the most positive due to their well-deserved reputation, has ended up ranked sixth in the world. Really, I don't either and I have generated these bastards. Anyways, this is a much more experienced batch of Grim Reapers whose two quarterfinals appearances in the last three World Cups are enough to suggest their rough placement in the world - great defensive side with likely floor of first-round playoff appearance and ceiling of semifinals, but most likely ending up in the Quarterfinals. A fairly predictable bunch as a whole.

Fortunately what this team does carry is a solid blend of experience and youth - Rugby Quebec has done a good job lately in fostering younger talents through their system, with age-based sides being consistently tested out on IRSEA's Anaia City campus and whatnot, and this likely means that even without stars like Callum Wild Jr or Theopile Maurus, the team would not be able to feel as big of a gap. This cycle continues to see the rise of interesting additions, with IRSEA's Jeremiah Coleman and upstart Racing 70's Park Dong-Seon looking promising amon this group of players. But more importantly is the continued ascendance of sophomore cycle players Saudlane Tehindin and Naum Sahatciu. Tehindin is a dual-national of Quebec and Ko-oren, the undisputed rugby powerhouse in all three codes, while Sahatciu, still in high school with his education taking place at the IRSEA and local high school, will be the youngest player to ever start for Grim Reapers' rugby side.

Tactics: The Darmeni game puts an emphasis on territorial advantage, thereby making the team's kicking game its most important asset. Darmeni teams will go for three points at any chance they get; receiving the resulting kick-off following the score will give them an advantage in possession as well. Scoring actual tries is very much an afterthought.

The Rugby Rundown
with Graham O'Doherty

34TH RUGBY UNION WORLD CUP: THAT'S ONE WAY TO DEFEND THE TITLE, I GUESS

Hello guys, and welcome back to another edition of The Rugby Rundown with me, your gay Irishman Graham O'Doherty. And oh boy, does it feel like it’s only been yesterday that we were celebrating Abanhfleft finally getting their hands on the Rugby Union World Cup and completing the trifecta of Rugby World Cups. Yes, guys, you read that right. For the first time ever, Abanhfleft have been crowned champions of the Rugby Union World Cup, and that victory means that we have finally claimed victory in all three major codes of rugby football. Obviously, we were the victors of the 33rd Rugby Union World Cup, but our other victories in the other codes include triumph over the Elephants of Elejamie in the 18th Rugby League World Cup, as well as our two trophies in the 4th and 6th Rugby Sevens World Cup (the win in the 4th being known as the “forgotten championship” because most of us aren’t really aware that we actually won that tournament). Ko-oren thwarted our attempts to claim a second Rugby League World Cup trophy, but now it’s time for us to move on from that particular failure and cheer on our Revolutionaries as we prepare to defend our championship and maybe win a second one in the process. I mean, we definitely have a non-zero percentage of being able to do that, right? Even taking into account the fickleness of the sporting gods for the fate of Fleftic sports, it still adds up to something that isn’t zero. Or maybe it does. I’ve never been into the heavier, more complicated side of maths. I prefer sticking to the four conventional operations myself, thank you very much.

So where do we begin with this? Well, the actual beginning is actually a good place to start. Hannasea have won the rights to host the 34th Rugby Union World Cup in a bidding process which seemed to involve only them and nobody else. Some might think that strange, but that’s usually been the case for many tournaments in recent years, not just the RUWC. Even when Copper Cuprum made a bid to host the 32nd World Cup, as far as I could recall they were the only country to make a bid and the bid went through without a hitch. Yeah, that was the tournament in which Abanhfleft came the closest that they did to finally claiming the Rugby Union World Cup (before RUWC 33, that is), so memories of that particular tournament still sting a little bit, but at least we can now look back on it as yet another stepping stone to the moment when we finally became the champions of rugby union. Anyway, to get back on topic, Hannasea have been chosen as the hosts of the 34th RUWC, and I have to say that while they don’t have a lot of experience hosting rugby football tournaments, this is the second one that they’ve hosted after the 20th Rugby League World Cup that they held at the same time with the 31st Rugby Union World Cup in Quintessence of Dust. This means that this isn’t their first rodeo, so they’re probably a bit more used to handling the influx of fans and such flocking to watch the Rugby Union World Cup, even for a country as small as theirs. Meanwhile, here I am wondering if Abanhfleft would be up to snuff if we were to host something like the Rugby Union World Cup…

Now let’s turn our attention to the match itself. Abanhfleft’s first match in the Rugby Union World Cup as defending champions was against a place called Cormoe. They appear to be one of that handful of nations that always appear for one tournament and then vanish into the pages of history once again, although it remains to be seen if Cormoe will follow that pattern or if they’ll break it. The jury’s still out though, so I’ll reserve judgment until more data has been gathered. But from the data that I have gathered from this game, Cormoe may indeed end up being yet another one-and-done nation at the end of the day. It’s a shame, honestly. I think they could do something in this tournament and maybe even the greater multiverse if they had the chance, but at the same time, it’s up to them to do something about it, and I don’t know if they want to do that or are even willing to do that. But to get back to the game itself, well, let’s just say that Cormoe played exactly like what they were, first-time debutants still suffering from big game jitters. It definitely contributed to Slade Snow slipping through a couple of tackles to land the first try of the game at just three minutes in. It was only the beginning of their troubles as well as Xander Li also found the end zone at fifteen minutes in, and then Kihara Kamau did the same just six minutes later.

Nobody wants to see their team go down by 21 points in the same number of minutes. I’m pretty sure that that applies to literally everybody. I know I wouldn’t like it if that happened to Abanhfleft. And I’m sure that that’s the same case for both the fans and players of Cormoe, and you could tell that the pressure of the situation was getting to them. Things were getting a bit too wild out on the pitch, and for once I’m glad that I’m not a rugby player in that situation because some of Cormoe’s players were getting a bit too comfortable with the idea that they actually liked being in the sin bin. Like, that’s not really a good way for you to help out your team with regards to getting back into the game, but then again, I’m not from Cormoe so I can’t really speak. Anyway, things calmed down a bit when the Cormoe scrum half finally got shown the yellow card and ordered to sit in the corner, but that only lasted all of five minutes before Cormoe ramped up their aggressiveness once again. Thankfully, the half-time siren sounded and they weren’t able to do more damage to us (in terms of tackles and such; they weren’t really doing anything to remedy the situation on the scoreboard) because of that.

The destruction only continued in the second half though, and the half-time break seemed like it had cooled off the Cormoe players a little too much. Gone was the fight that they had exhibited in the first half; now they were just milling around the place, doing enough to be able to claim that they participated but never actually doing anything of note to threaten the Revolutionaries or their end zone. Aniello Traverso soon scored an unconverted try for Abanhfleft, followed up by a converted one from substitute Mike Somerville, and then Phil Carlyle capped off proceedings with a penalty kick brought about by one of Cormoe’s flankers going into the bin as well. Now, in other circumstances I probably would have spent a lot more time covering in detail the plays that led to the scores, but because of how much Abanhfleft dominated this game, I don’t really see the point. Abanhfleft won their first game as defending Rugby Union World Cup champions, and by a good margin as well. If it was a team which actually had a good bit of history in the RUWC like our next opponent Lisander, I would feel a little bit better about a result such as this. As it is though, it feels more like a sad thing than anything else. I mean, put yourself in Cormoe’s shoes. Here was a nation making its debut appearance in the Rugby Union World Cup, and their very first game was against the defending champions. Sure, that particular team had a history of screwing up in the group stage, especially against unranked teams and newcomers, so some of the Cormoe players and staff might have thought that this was a good opportunity for them to make their name known to the rest of the multiverse, stamp their authority on the rest of the group even. Instead, they were blinded by the bright lights of the occasion and were swept aside by their opposition without so much as a second thought. It’s really sad when you think of it that way.

I’m sorry if that last bit took a bit of a turn at the end. But it’s just the reality of the situation. Sometimes a new team in any given tournament will take it by storm and eventually establish themselves as a new player on the sporting stage, but most of the time that doesn’t happen. Many countries come into a tournament for their first appearance, only for that one appearance of theirs to be the only thing that they do before they fade back into the mists once again. Sometimes these countries are able to come back, but most of the time when they disappear, they really disappear. I’m talking about their entire existence being wiped from the map, from the records, everything. Maybe some determined researcher or lucky fellow happens upon some information from that country and manages to preserve it for posterity, but really, most of the time all that’s left to us is a passing mention in a news article or web page that this place took part in that tournament and then did not return ever again. Sometimes we have an idea of what happened to those countries, bizarre happenings commonly known only as Catastrophic Termination Events or CTEs which result in every single thing and every single person in a country struck by that catastrophe to disappear into the ether. The biggest CTE that I could remember that got covered here in Abanhfleft had to do with some place called the State of Panem, but they were more into football than rugby during the brief time that they were with us. Some of its citizens managed to escape to places such as the Fhulghamous Peninsula, but most of Panem’s people weren’t as lucky and they ended up disappearing along with Panem itself.

Really, I don’t know where my mind is going with all of this talk about disappearing countries and refugees from CTEs. It’s kinda distracting me from the matter at hand, which is rugby union, but I guess since I’ve already covered the basics of what happened in our first game as defending RUWC champions then my mind has decided that it has license to roam freely to wherever it wants. Now excuse me while I go fetch my brain back from whatever corner of the world it’s ended up in. Lisander is up next for our Revolutionaries, and I’m pretty sure that they’re gonna put up a much tougher fight than the poor lads from Cormoe did. At least part of me hopes that that’s the case. The other part of me hopes that our lads dominate Lisander just like they did with Cormoe. But my brain tells me that there’s a bigger possibility of me becoming straight than the Revolutionaries blanking Lisander. But hey, stranger things have happened sometimes. But hopefully I’ll still be the same rugby-loving gay Irishman that you all remember me to be. XOXO from Graham…

Alliance Propels Woodrow To Second Term

Image
Woodrow speaking to supporters following his victory.
SCOTT CITY - The newly formed Alliance for a Presidential Majority (APM) has propelled incumbent President of the Republic Alexander Woodrow past National Labor Party challenger Sebastian Elliott in the second round of the presidential election, granting Woodrow another four years in the Presidential Mansion. The two candidates were separated by less than one percent in the first round. In the second round runoff, Woodrow won 54.34% of the vote, while Elliott received the remaining 45.66%, with Woodrow's candidacy receiving the endorsement of the Liberal Party and its candidate, Corwin Hull, who had finished third in the first round. It was that endorsement, along with the officialization of a coalition agreement between five parties, to be known as the Alliance for a Presidential Majority, that helped to seal Woodrow's second victory.

The Alliance for a Presidential Majority was officially formed between the two rounds of the presidential election, with the elections for Parliament occurring concurrently with the first round. The five member parties are the Republican Party (83 seats), the Liberal Party (27), the National Patriotic Party (7), the newly formed Civic Democratic Union (2) and the Phoenix Party (1) which represents Darmen's wizarding population and has a history of supporting the incumbent government no matter its ideological alignment. With 120 combined seats, the Alliance has an eleven seat majority in Parliament and will enable Woodrow to enact far more of his agenda than he could in the previous term.

In addition to providing for a parliamentary coalition and Hull's endorsement in the second round, the agreement forming the APM also provides for several positions in the Executive Cabinet to be taken up by non-Republican Party politicians. Danielle Ó Marcaigh (NPP) retains her position as Secretary of State for Astronomy and Research, she was the only non-Republican member of the cabinet during Woodrow's first term, but she will be joined by four Liberal Party members as well as the leader of the Civic Democratic Union, Henrik Augustine.

Augustine, who previously served as Foreign Affairs Secretary during the Rademacher administration, will become the new Interior Secretary. Liberal Party leader Corwin Hull, whose presidential candidacy collected only 14.93% of the vote in the first round (compared to Woodrow's 37.14% and Elliott's 36.15%), will become Finance and Treasury Secretary once more. Like Augustine, he too served during the Rademacher administration. The other Liberal members of the cabinet are Laverne Collingwood, Culture and Sport Secretary; Cassia Strong, Postal Services Secretary (a position Woodrow has been trying hard to eliminate by privatizing the nation's postal services); and Jerred Crewe, the first male Environment Secretary in Darmen's modern history.

Woodrow's first step as President following his reelection will be to make good on his campaign promise to raise the minimum wage to $10.56 per hour from its current rate of $9.68 per hour. The minimum wage will be raised by $0.22 per year over four years until it reaches the proposed rate. While supporters claim the raise in wages will help low and mid-income earners deal with the effects of inflation in Darmen, critics are urging the President to rethink the timing of the raise, claiming that increased incomes will only make inflation worse.

THIRD FORCES ASSEMBLE: Baa-baas endure Kelssek to win a BP.
With Prime-Minister Ecker in the stands, Lisander save at least a bonus point on defeat againt three-time world champions.

The Lisanderian Barbarians are only the third force in their group for this World Cup. Odds are not that good, in fact. The decision of sending "the A team" while the Irises are expected to tour Alice Bay instead seems to be more political than actually focused in the team development, but who are we to challenge the orders of the Lisander Rugby Union?

If I was too much a fan of Conspiracy Theories, I'd say this is a nod to Prime-Minister Fernand Ecker. Reaching the last year of its tenure, it's already expected that he'll follow the steps of his predecessor. Before reaching the position of Prime-Minister, Ecker was almost an outsider, a man focused more in administration than in politics itself. He wasn't the first option for the election in 2019. He also wasn't the second stronger candidate. He was "forcibly self-appointed", when the expected candidate of his praised of his ability to make alliances and put things on march.

Prime-Minister Fernand Ecker

But this is nor RTL News neither The National. We talk about Rugby, and we only noticed the facts above because we have a bunch of lazy bums with much idle time... Sorry, I said we noticed the facts above because Prime-Minister Ecker was at the Chalcester Grounds. He took a stop on his International Tour, that will continue later this week to South Newlandia and then will finish in Neomaris, where he's set to oversee and declare the results of the first Neomarisian Parliamentary Election. Ecker just had tickets to watch Lisanderian Barbarians face Kelssek and briefly landed as a tourist in Greenfield.

But this is not a media outlet or news site. If I keep writing about His Excellency, the Prime-Minister, that was seen with his wife and daughters in a Hannasean stadium last night, Director Catarina Salvia will really get angry at me. The game itself wasn't that good. It was almost one-sided, with the strong team of Kelssek pushing our boys. It was played most of the time inside our 50 to 22 area. Let's expect they could bring a victory in the next game, against Abahnfleft, or reaching the knockouts will be really hard.

Hamsters taken down in tournament opener

The Hamsters, Hannasea's national rugby team, fell to a disappointing 28-34 defeat in the tournament opener of Rugby World Cup 34. Two tries from Ethan Price, the only man to represent the Guild Federation in all three codes of rugby, brought the crowd at Swordbreak Road to their feet, but the nerveless kicking of Elymian stand-off Jack Sparks and a well worked late try that sent over winger Catia Gavalas combined to overhaul their lead. The game was a tactical battle that captain Ryan Perry admitted "didn't play to [the Hamsters'] strengths", while Isaac Clarke had an uninspiring and turnover prone game in contrast to the faultless display from Joan Tanner behind the Elmyia pack. Clarke is likely to lose his place to young Brooklyn Parry for the Hamsters' tough second match, up against veteran world rugby presences Darmen, while the Hamsters suffered a blow losing experienced lock Kyson Bradshaw, who pictured up a thigh strain that will see him miss at least the next game. Perry praised back row partner Connor Watts in winning penalties with his aggressive breakdown work, and full-back Jack Wright, whose touch-finding kicks proved effective before he was substituted after taking a stinger blow to the elbow, though he is expected to be fit against Darmen, but said that the front row -- a traditional weakness of the Hamsters -- "simply had to step up" to win what is expected to be another tactical battle.

Cutoff for MD2.

News from the Guild Federation

A new grassland wilderness reserve has been unveiled. The Haverburn Valley Park will become the largest protected area of land in the Guild Federation (not counting the off-shore Coral Coast preserve). The Haverburn Valley was once an area of intensive agricultural activity but today is home to a flourishing meadow biome whose biodiversity will be studied by ecologists, while certain activities such as off-road biking and wild camping will be restricted. The move has been generally welcomed.
Suggested prompt: Does your country afford specific environmental protections to certain areas? Or perhaps restricts access for other reasons, such as religious significance or military secrecy?

"WHAT A DISGRACE!"
WEAKENED TANGATAREHUA SIDE THRASHED BY TVUN-ia

15th December 2022
ImageImageImageImage

PORTSMORE, HANNASEA
The Toa have been handed an embarrassing and humiliating defeat at the hands of TVUN-ia, reversing the team's fortunes and sending them plummeting to near the bottom of the Group 3 table.

The Toa were crippled first by the devastating news that kicker Tama Patariki has been injured and not cleared to return to the pitch, while centre Paao Arono was red-carded in the first half after allegedly kicking another player in the face, leaving the Toa with a 14-man side.

While Witi Herewhene came through with a try in 21st minute and Anaru Nikau scored another in the 48th minute (converted by Rangi Kingi), in the end Tangatarehua's defences crumbled and the weakened side was obliterated by TVUN-ia.

Questions are now being raised as to whether it might be time to sack Timoti Mikaere as coach, given that his controversial defensive strategy has been shown to be completely useless.

"I won't be making any comment on my future, I am here to see us through to end of the world cup campaign," he said in the post-game conference.

Mikaere was also quick to blame the referee, arguing that the decision to red-card Paao Arono was "heavy-handed and unjustified, it's clear from the footage that he did not deliberately intend to kick the other player."

Team captain Anaru Nikau said that "lessons have been learned and humble pie has been eaten.

"TVUN-ia were just too good for us on the day, they were better prepared and frankly I think they wanted it more. They deserved to win."

While all hope is not lost, it is now crucial that Tangatarehua wins its upcoming games against Ko-oren, Port Ember and Natanians and Nosts if it is to have any hope of reaching the knock-out stages.

"These are some of the greatest rugby nations in the world so the road ahead will not be easy - but it's not impossible," said Nikau. "We are as determined as ever to show the rugby world why they should fear Tangatarehua!"

Tangatarehua 12:

Tries: Herewhene (21'), Nikau (48')
Conversions: Kingi 1/2 (49')

TVUN-ia 56:

Tries: Chkoidze (11', 33'), Hevnostanivich (28', 44'), Mahinulani (59'), Wakefield (64'), Vakatawa (70')
Conversions: Valbuena 8/8 (12', 29', 34', 45', 60', 65', 71')

Halftime score: 5 - 21

Match award: Jose Valbuena

Blog of The Crazy Nomad

Blog Series: Rugby Union World Cup 34.

Greetings my lovies!

I bid you all a hearty welcome / welcome back (hopefully!) to my blog, detailing my adventures as I follow the Port Emberian National Rugby Union squad's campaign within the 34th rendition of the Rugby Union World Cup, within the beautiful (but unnecessarily cold) Hannasean Federation. If you missed my previous blog post, check it out first.

I'll wait.

Blog Series: Riley's World Cup 34 Adventures

Part 1
Part 2 (You are here)

Okay welcome back lovies!

So, after our absolute and total (and shocking) victory over the mighty Natanians and Nosts, I left behind the wonderful city of Portsmore, and travelled to the city of Brethwick. Due to the lack of airports and cars, I opted for travel via train, which was a genius idea, as it allowed me to slowly soak in the surrounding beauty of the serene countryside. I have said it before, and will say it again - this place is naturally romantic!

Furthermore, being forced to slow down my life for a few hours, I was presented with plenty opportunity to mingle with the everyday natives. An interesting fact I have come upon is to learn that the host nation has just selected a new head of state in over a decade, a laddie known as Evie Cameron is now the holder of the Shiney title of Grand Warden. I apologise to any locals reading this, but where I am from, said title refers to the boss of a prison… So I laughed and laughed. And a little chuckle extra. Okay I'm done laughing. Okay not yet… Okay yep I'm done.

So after arriving in Brethwick and clocking into my very nice hotel, I still had a day and a half to spare before my magical supporter aura was to be required at the Moontide Park stadium.

In order to make the most of my trip here, I hit up two Brewery Tours in a row, sampling the finest brews and luncheons on offer. I will write about my experiences here on my sister blog, Riley's Journey to Achieve a Food & Alcohol Orgasm.

Once the sun had disappeared behind the majestic mountains dotting the landscape, I found my way to numerous local nightclubs, and drank, danced and jollied my heart out, as I always do of course. The locals sure know how to party hard, which is one of the reasons why I am rapidly falling in love with this nation!

The following day I took it easy, well, when comparing to normal Riley standards, and visited a few museums and restaurants (again posted on my sister blog), before finally heading to the Moontide Park stadium, dressed in my usual supporter uniform: leather boots, skinnies and my official Dragons™ jersey and peak cap.

Port Emberian Rugby World Cup Run: News from over there

Port Ember VS Ko-oren

Port Ember 00 - 39 Ko-oren

So, this match would fit perfectly into the "Grudge Match" mould, should a journalist wish to milk some headlines. You see, the mighty Dragonflies humbled our rookie squad just prior to this World Cup, during the Dragonfly Day Celebration Tour, hosted by them. I say Humbled, but I really mean, manhandled. I won't even mention the score here.. But know that it was enough of a lesson for our lads that they left the host nation knowing full well that they were still rookies amongst the Rugby giants.

But nonetheless, I won't go as far as calling this a Grudge Match, as I believe our lads in Blue have too much respect for these time weathered legends. I will however, call this an "Almost Grudge Match", simply on the account of both our teams bearing similar nicknames: Port Ember aka the Dragons, Ko-oren aka the Dragonflies…

As the opening whistle sounded, it was welcomed by a defining cheer and blasts of trumpets, willing our lads with moral support - the stadium filled once more with a sea of Port Emberian supporters - thousands upon thousands of fans who have made the journey. It's a feeling like none other.

That feeling didn't last very long however, as this turned out to be a show of total humiliation.

Port Ember kicked off the match with legendary Flyhalf Ryley Mićjo placing a beautiful but shallow high ball down field, with #6 Ocean Heath giving chase, jumping into the air and colliding with Ko-orenite outside center, Reginald Airthorn midair. The collision sent Airthorn flying backwards in an awkward position, crashing into the ground, neck first. Airthorn was stretchered off, and Heath was red carded off.

Four minutes later saw Ko-oren score the first converted try after a successful drive from the penalty induced line out on the 5 meter mark, placed down by the N8 Haggya Gimmerra, and converted by Nimrod Whithingham.

The resulting restart saw our legendary Flyhalf Ryley Mićjo catching the highball and attempting to rush up field against the rushing opposition, only to be caught in a very hard and high speed tackle by winger Orville Finnerty, which led to Mićjo sustaining a knee injury, and sent off for the remainder of the contest. The tackle was slapped with a penalty, but no cards were forthcoming. Mićjo's replacement, Ramiro Ruff, failed to convert the penalty.

A few plays later saw a serious disagreement take place when Port Emberian Captain, and scrum half, Archie Fajra punched the opposition Flanker, Dossirla Moshindi, when he latched onto the ball after being tackled. The punch landed right on Moshindi's nose, forcing blood and snot to spray the holy turf. Whilst I cheered - the ref did not, hitting our captain with a red, and conveniently forgetting about the holding the ball offence. Nimrod Whittingham slotted the penalty kick in between the uprights perfectly.

The Port Emberians suffered greatly for the remainder of the first half, unable to stop the systematic steamrolling attacks, with two men down. The numerical disadvantage was just too much and led to two more converted tries, both by winger Orville Finnerty, converted by Gimmerra. The first half ended with Ko-oren leading the charge 24-0.

The second half went even worse for our team, and honestly, for the sport in general, due to the insane lack of discipline from our side. 8 Minutes into the second half saw the Big Man himself, #1 Davie Nikola, execute a very dirty slam-tackle on Orville Finnerty. The tackle led to Nikola being stretchered off as well, and Nikola earning the third red card of the day.

The entire second half was characterised by extremely poor behaviour and dirty play by our side - and conceding 9 penalties (!!!), of which 5 were converted into successfully converted penalty kicks. I am very surprised by the fact that we managed to stop any more tries being scored, despite being three men down and despite our terrible sportsmanship.

As one of the proudest supporters of our squad, I will be the first to admit that our showing today was disgraceful and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Our lads are well known for their aggression and heated passion on field, but three red cards is too much. That and two purposeful injuries to our opponents.. I always condone a good shuffle on the field, but no one likes to see serious injuries.

I will now go and drink my shame away and pray that at least Ryley Mićjo will recover in time for our next match against Depivik.

A quick looksie at our past/upcoming matches:

Match Day 1: Port Ember VS Natanians and Nosts (41—24)

Match Day 2: Port Ember VS Ko-oren (00-39)

Match Day 3: Port Ember VS Depivik

Match Day 4: Port Ember VS Tangatarehua

Match Day 5: Port Ember VS TJUN-ia

A quick looksie at our group opponents:

Okay okay, I know I should have done this on my first blog post already, but I blame jetlag, shock at the lack of cars and my obsession at being able to wear my leather jacket.

So, our national team was thrown into Group 3 of the Group Stages, alongside 5 other squads ready to rumble and jumble into the competition.

Natanians and Nosts

The Blue Sharks are ranked as the 11th current best team according to the Rugby Union Multiverse Rankings and are well known and respected in the Rugby world. They reached the quarterfinals during the previous world cup, where they were sent home by the then-hosts; Baggieland. They are famous for being excellent in tactical play, preferring to maintain possession whilst grinding away at the opposition, slowly but surely, stealing points via drop goals preferably.

Ko-oren

The Dragonflies are ranked as the 3rd current best team according to the Rugby Union Multiverse Rankings and are considered to be actual living legends within the sport. They have dominated every rugby code in existence somewhere in their history. I'm speaking of claiming the Union World Cup trophy like four times, as a quick example. They are gods of defensive, systematic, safe and planned play.

Depivik

This squad is an unranked, debutant team, with no one knowing nothing about them (at least according to my own sources. And yes my sources are all drunks like me, so forgive us all, for we know naught we say)!

Tangatarehua

The Toa are an unranked, debutant squad. Although being a debutant squad, these ladies are no stranger to the holy game, having been playing it for more than 200 years. They managed to get themselves banned from Multiversal rugby for most of that time, but hey, we all have a few shameful secrets! These guys are known as large, in your face badgers - exactly what I enjoy in my rugga. Despite this, they have apparently reigned in their over the top aggression in order to play a more careful, "wall of death* defensive style of play.

TJUN-ia

The Jaguars are ranked as the 5th current best team according to the Rugby Union Multiverse Rankings and are well known and respected in the Rugby world. For example, they are the runners up for the previous world cup. Yet another giant in the game.

A quick looksie at other Group 3 Matches:

Tangatarehua 12–56 TJUN-ia

The Warriors of Tangatarehua were taught a lesson against one of the original rugby big boys, being humbled after their massive victory over Depivik in match day 1.

Natanians and Nosts 59–6 Depivik

The N&N's managed to bounce back in style after suffering a massive loss against Port Ember in MD1, proving that they are still to be taken seriously.

Random side note… A pop-up notification informed me that my friend from Abanhfleft; Graham O'Doherty, the Blogger of Rugby Rundown is in-country. Be sure to check out his work, he is an excellent analyst, and a very cool bloke in general. He might not be able to keep up with my party spirit, but we won't judge! Anyway, Graham, if you read this by chance, I hope we stumble into one another soon!

Anyway… I need a drink.

Till we meet again my lovies!

Scrum!: Bounceback? Tino

Postby TJUN-ia » Thu Dec 15, 2022 9:55 am

After this RUWC started with a Dragonfly punch to the balls at the Seat of Quickwinds, the Union Jaguars of TJUN-ia were starting from the backfoot already - not that this was a death knell, of course. Sure, being 0-1 wasn't fun at all, but we still had 4 more games to turn things around and that's all Jacob Peterson wanted to say about the matter. Everyone knew that we had to bounce back, but Captain Alan Wakefield didn't want to assume things and wanted to earn the bounce back on the field.

Match 2 would go down at Portsmore Community Stadium against debutants Tangatarehua, a Maori nation that were happy to represent their people on the international stage. If any Maori from Tangatarehua are watching this, then all I have to say is "Tena koe! Manaakitia koe mo te noho ki konei me te whakahīhī hei māngai mō tō iwi!" - which comes from my heart. Their haka was certainly intimidating and the Toa did manage to score 12 points in this contest through tries from Witi Herewhene and Anaru Nikau, with Rangi Kingi going 1/2 on conversions. But on this day, 12 points were never going to be enough and we just absolutely crushed these debutants to dust. Both Beka Chkoidze and Roman Hevnostanivich ended up with 2 tries each with the other 3 going to Peter Mahinulani, Captain Wakefield and Kennedy Vakatawa. Jose Valbuena would end up grabbing POTM after an 8/8 performance, with all 5 conversions and 3 penalty goals all being slotted home. The final score was 56-12, the most obvious bonus point win in recent memory and a great bounce back at that.

Our position certainly feels better now, but the job isn't over just yet. Up next will be a familiar foe in the form of #11 Natanians and Nosts - the first of a doubleheader at Moontide Park. This is our final group game against ranked opposition, so winning this one could be critical to our ambitions in this RUWC. GO UNION JAGS!

The Beaucester Gazette
Elmyia Deliver Thrashing for the Ages
Where are expectations now?

Going into the second game against Crimson Tree, there was certainly some buzz building around the Elmyian Rugby side. The opening day win over the hosts had dominated the back pages of all the papers and a large audience was expected for Elmyia's second game against unranked Crimson Tree. A decent number of fans were also seen filing into Martinfield's ahead of the clash. With eyes on them, and stakes raised, Elmyia delivered a performance for the ages.

The 88-3 scoreline was astounding, quite possibly an all-time record (certainly the largest margin of victory in the previous 3 editions of the tournament). Elmyia went in with expectations on them for the first time ever, and they passed with flying colours. This didn't look a team taking only their second ever victory in world rugby as they ran in 9 tries, and Jack Sparks nervelessly converted 8, as well as 9 penalties. Taken with the one try he bagged, Sparks now has 67 points across two games, which is frankly ridiculous. Elmyia dominated from the off, and a quick-fire hattrick of tries within the first ten minutes saw them race 24 points ahead, from which they never looked back.

It would be pointless to recount the details of the thrashing, tries came in every form. Some from periods of pressure, some moments of individual brilliance and some through expert manipulation of space. Elmyia made themselves look very much at home on the big stage. Whilst in the prior win over Hannsea the work of the forward line took the spotlight, here the backs were able to demonstrate their elegance on the field, tearing through the opposition lines like a sloppy journalist through sloppy cliches.

The standout performer was surely Dennison, securing a hattrick of tries in play and frequently unsettling Crimson Tree. Her running was excellent, with her displaying a range of footwork she had not been able to unleash in the much tighter battle with the hosts previously. Dimetriou also is worth a shout in the centre, whilst he only scored the one try, his range of passing carved the opponents open, allowing others to flourish as a result.

It was very clear the crowds back home enjoyed their introduction to international rugby. Where international football has become synonymous with dour displays, disappointing results and drudgery, this was something joyful, a moment any Elmyian fan could uncomplicatedly enjoy. Head coach Palin's aims coming into the tournament had been to secure a first win. With that mission already accomplished, this fearless decimation of an opponent could be enjoyed without fear. The question now is where Elmyia aim next?

Next up Elmyia face Darmen, an established side who have history for pushing through the group stages and onto the knockout rounds. They laboured in a heavy defeat to Nova Anglicana on matchday 1, struggling to score and looking overrun. Such a performance had some questioning if they'd be an easy scalp, but a 48-14 pasting of Hannsea on matchday 2 put paid to that. Darmen are a side that heavily favour the kicking game and will provide the biggest test yet of Elmyia's improved forward line.

So, what is the expectation? Well, given performances so far Elmyia can surely dream of reaching the Quarter-Finals, but that requires a result against Darmen. To lose and go out now would leave the impression of a plucky underdog making its first mark. A good basis to build on, some lovely memories, but not a tournament that will be remembered for the ages. To achieve that, the knockout rounds must be their goal. Given the aims they arrived with, Elmyia have done everything they set out to do. The question is, can they be satisfied with that now?

The Rugby Rundown
with Graham O'Doherty

34TH RUGBY UNION WORLD CUP: SO MANY POINTS

Hello guys, and welcome back to another edition of The Rugby Rundown with me, your gay Irishman Graham O'Doherty. I don’t why I thought that it wouldn’t be possible, but it would seem like we are back into the realm of high-scoring games in the Rugby Union World Cup once again. This had already happened once before when Copper Cuprum hosted the 32nd Rugby Union World Cup, but that made sense since the Chiefdom was a member of the APOC Coalition and had many teams and officials in the Rugby Coalition. The Rugby Coalition had these new rules which encouraged more scoring from the teams, and it probably wouldn’t be too big of a leap to imagine that the Copperite officials involved in the running of the RUWC would have applied these rules to the games, at least on a mental level, which could explain the larger scores that we saw back then. Of course, when the action shifted to Baggieland for the 33rd Rugby Union World Cup, the officials there weren’t that much versed in the Rugby Coalition’s rules, and so much the scoring went down by a notable chunk. However, now that Hannasea are hosting the 34th Rugby Union World Cup, it would appear that we’re going through something similar seeing as it was Hannasean rugby (or was it Quodite rugby?) that inspired the Rugby Coalition to adopt a variation of its rules to encourage higher scoring games.

Anyway, why am I talking about high-scoring games once again? Well, guys, it’s pretty simple. It’s because we’ve just had one such high-scoring game ourselves. And I thought our team blanking Cormoe in our opening game was strange enough as it was. Look, Lisander is nothing like Cormoe at all. Lisander is an established name in the world of rugby union. Well, that’s not true. Not from a certain point of view, at least. Lisander is an established name not just in rugby union but in rugby league and rugby sevens as well. That’s what sets them apart from the likes of Cormoe, and that’s what makes the fact that we beat them 58-24 all the more surprising. Yeah, I don’t think that we’ve ever beaten Lisander by this big of a score ever. But that isn’t even the strangest result of this World Cup, and it’s just the second matchday! Yeah, Elmyia, I’m looking at you. I’m looking at you putting up 88 points against Crimson Tree and I’m going to be watching your career with great interest because I want to know if there’s going to be a chance that Elmyia’s and Abanhfleft’s paths will intersect, and therefore if there will be a probability that they could do the same thing to our Revolutionaries. I’m watching you, Elmyia.

So how in the world did this turn of events even happen? Well, I don’t know as well, but I’m going to do everything I can to attempt an explanation. Quite exactly how two teams managed to squeeze the scoring of 86 points into 80 minutes of gameplay, I don’t quite know. But what I do know is that I’m the one who’s going to try to tell you all about all of this. But where do I even start? Honestly though, I really don’t know where I should start. So many things were happening in such a short amount of time that I really think that it would be almost impossible to describe each and every single event in painstaking detail like I used to do. But that won’t stop me from giving it the good old fashioned try anyway. I might fail at the task that I’ve set out to do, but at least I actually tried. There’s no shame in trying; all the shame is in not doing anything at all. But seriously though, that’s enough waffling from me. Time to get to work. I will begin at the very beginning of the game. That’s usually a good place as any to start talking about the action, and I do mean action because as soon as our Revolutionaries got their hands on the ball, they went straight to work getting the rock into the end zone.

Want to get a taste of how crazy this game got? Well, for starters, after just fifteen minutes played, Abanhfleft had already put up 17 points to Lisander’s 3, Lee Jae-sang and Yejide Kayode scoring the two tries for the Revolutionaries. Okay, maybe it wasn’t as crazy as I had made it sound in the first place, but I’m telling you, if you separate the two halves of this particular game, you can still pretend that the scores in each half were the full-time scores of a pair of matches. That being said, the first fifteen minutes may have seen the score climb up to 17-3 just like that, but the next fifteen minutes managed to see a break in the pace as Lisander managed to keep our boys quiet in that time period while scoring a try of their own at the same time. This of course put them within one score of the Revolutionaries, and given that these are the Barbarians that we are talking about, it would do our boys some good to find a way past the team in green, something like what they had done in the first fifteen minutes of this match. That shouldn’t be too difficult for them, right? I mean, that was the hope of the fans, but hopes don’t always end up matching with reality. That’s been a bit of a problem for Abanhfleft, not just in rugby union but in the many other sports in which we participate. In some cases, we’ve been able to find a way to remedy that, but other times we’re still subject to the whims and vagaries of mysterious powers which sometimes makes it feel like we’re just playthings for a cosmic being that revels in the misery of an entire nation. But for the moment, there was no misery to be had for the rugby union fans in Abanhfleft. The cosmic being will have to find its source of Fleftic sporting misery somewhere else.

And I really do mean that last sentence in the previous paragraph. Lisander may have been able to keep our boys at bay for fifteen minutes, but once the game clock hit the half-hour mark, the Revolutionaries got right back to business. First it was Xander Li who scored a try (his second in the tournament and Abanhfleft’s third in this game), and then with the half-time siren looming, Nicholas Brunetti managed to find a way past a stalwart goal line defense on Lisander’s part to increase Abanhfleft’s lead yet again. The siren probably came at a good time for the Barbarians at times, it really did look like they were going to get battered by the boys time and time again. For our part, some of the lads actually seemed annoyed that it was already half-time, and I can’t really blame them. I mean, think about it from their point of view. The game is absolutely going their way, and if it had gone, the Revolutionaries had a good chance of scoring even more points. Nobody on the side of the blue team wanted the game to take a pause because it could end up diverting all the momentum that had been building up in the moment, and in a sport like rugby union, it could be very difficult to regain that momentum. I mean, I’m just saying, it’s happened before. Things are going swimmingly for Abanhfleft in the first half of a game, and then in the second half they’re nothing like the team that had been on the field in the first half. You can never be too sure, is the point that I believe I’m trying to make.

Thankfully, the lads gave us lots of good reasons not to be worried about that come the second half. 27 good reasons, to be exact. In fact, the Revolutionaries seemed to have picked up right where they left off with regards to how they took to the second half. Xander Li became the first Fleftic player to score at least two tries in one game in this tournament as he claimed his second try just five minutes into the second half. Interchange Stuart Querubin then got in on the fun as well, claiming a five-pointer in his first ever appearance for the Revolutionaries. I’m sure that it’s a memory that he will cherish for the rest of his life. Not sure that I can say the same for the Lisanderans though, but hey, if the shoe was on the other foot, I wouldn’t hesitate to try to forget about this game too. And I guess the heat (of the moment, that is; I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a “hot” day in Hannasea so far) was beginning to get to some of the Barbarians as they began committing more mistakes and giving up more, the most notable of which was Flavio Ricci getting sent to the bin. Abanhfleft took advantage of the situation to the best that they could, and Phil Carlyle even used two of the aforementioned penalties to put a few more points up on the board.

However, when you combine those six penalty points with the sin binning of one of their props, Lisander finally looked like they had had enough of this nonsense. Lino Valente, Lisander’s replacement for Timothy Aronson, broke at least two tackles on his way to charging down the flank and into the end zone, and you could say that he was motivated purely by the desire to make sure that his country and his team didn’t get too embarrassed by their opponents on this day. Another Lisanderan replacement, Theo Guastaldi, got in on the action as well, but this time what he did was brute-force his way through Abanhfleft’s goal line defense in order to ground the ball just beside the posts. I mean, at that point, Lisander were literally just playing for pride now since there was not a lot of time left for them to score 28 points, even if the conditions at the moment were good enough for a high-scoring game. I guess the Revolutionaries were just better able to take advantage of said conditions seeing as we’re slightly more used to playing some of that high-scoring Hannasean and Quodite-style rugby. And, as if to prove my point, Samuel Angulo also scored a try. It was just like that meme with that morning talk show host distributing stuff to basically everyone in the audience. Remember that meme? It’s an old one, but it checks out. You get a try! You get a try! You get a try! Everyone gets a try! Of course not everyone got a try literally, but you know what I mean.

And there it is. Somehow, I’ve actually managed to recap the entirety of the Abanhfleft versus Lisander match, and I don’t think I left out too many details in narrating this tale. If any details did get omitted, it’s probably because they weren’t that important to begin with. Sounds a bit callous of me, but it’s kind of what it is. If a detail isn’t noteworthy enough to stand out in someone’s mind, even someone as stupid as me, it probably wasn’t that important to begin with. But you all want to know what’s important? Our next game is against the Atolls of Scodalek. Like Cormoe, they’re new to the scene, and like Cormoe, they really look like they’re going to follow the trend of “play in one tournament and then disappear from the face of the multiverse.” At least they’ve actually managed to field a team for the Rugby Union World Cup, which already means that they’re better than Cormoe in that regard. But whether they’ll be better than Cormoe, Lisander, or even Abanhfleft itself remains to be seen. I guess we will find out the answer soon enough though. I just wonder if it’s an answer that I would like to know, or if it’s a mystery that was actually better left unsolved. XOXO from Graham…

Hamsters crushed as home tournament goes from bad to worse

Darmen crushed the hopes and dreams of the Hannasean Hamsters, and then jumped up and down on the shattered remnants just to make sure. As the Darmeni pack won continual penalties against an overawed Hannasean front five, the relentless boot of Dar Mingo booted over penalty after penalty. Danny Schroeder had a fine individual game and could not be faulted for his pack's meltdown against the Darmeni onslaught, but the woeful performance makes the prospect of a group stage exit in a home tournament that much more likely.

Cutoff for MD3.

News from the Guild Federation

This World Cup weekend, visitors may witness a few moments of commemoration of the 1819 War -- but only a few. There will be no flyovers from military jets, no grand parades, no ceremonial cannonfire. Most Hannaseans will go about their business with nothing more than swiping their phones to donate to the Hannasean Legion charity. Hannasea is not a culture that venerates military success (or failure), and has a distinctly non-martial culture. Finding statues of military heroes will be near-to-impossible for tourists looking for some cultural sights in between rugby games.
Suggested prompt: Does your country make a big show of celebrating its military history? How much do your citizens know and talk about wars of liberation, revolution, and conquest?
Note: for Hannasea's results, I screen-shared my scorination so a 3rd party could verify the result. In this case thanks to Zwangzug.

Teams in red earned a bonus point.

Group 1

PROTESTORS DEMAND COACH RESIGNATION AFTER TANGATAREHUA SUFFER SECOND HUMILIATING DEFEAT

17th December 2022

WHAKAARA
Hundreds of protestors have gathered outside the headquarters of the Imperial Tangatarehua Rugby Union Corporation in Whakaara demanding the removal coach Timoti Mikaere, following the Toa's humiliating 23-0 defeat at the hands of Ko-oren.

"This is absolutely disgusting!" said one protestor, who asked not to be named. "The problem is not so much that we have lost - it is the scale of that loss that demonstrates the incompetence of our coaches and strategy."

"Ko-oren beat us fair and square and so I do not have any grudge against them, nor against TJUN-ia who beat us earlier this week," said another. "And this is not the fault of the team - it is down to one man and his idiotic strategy: Timoti Mikaere needs to resign!"

The CEO of the Imperial Tangatarehua Rugby Union Corporation, Mere Rewa Kawhena, released a statement this morning responding to outraged fans of the Toa.

"Like all Rehuan rugby fans, I am very disappointed by the performance of our national team in this world cup. However, the Imperial Tangatarehua Rugby Union Corporation does not have any legal mechanism by which we can terminate Timoti Mikaere's contract, nor would it be morally or even strategically correct for us to pressure him to resign in the middle of a world cup. We must therefore support the coach and the team, regardless of the outcome."

Mikaere has repeatedly been criticised for directing the Toa, usually famous for their extremely aggressive style of play, to adopt a more conservative "defensive wall" position. In the game against TJUN-ia, the team conceded 56 points and scored only 12, while against Ko-oren the team conceded 23 points without scoring a single point.

In a post game press conference he attempted to defend the team's record, stating that it was "unrealistic" for Tangatarehua to expect to win against multiversal rugby heavyweights like Ko-oren and TJUN-ia in their debut World Cup appearance.

"If anything we should honoured to play alongside such impressive rugby nations, rather than adhere to some quixotic fantasy about winning the cup during our debut appearance."

These statements appeared only to further spur fans to anger, with reports of protests and isolated acts of violence reported across Tangatarehua, including reports of bins being kicked over by enraged fans in Wharekorana and an effigy of Mikaere set on fire in Tamaki.

"We're not expecting to win the world cup, but surely we deserve to at least reach the knock-out stages!" said retired rugby veteran Tama Moana, himself a former Toa and former captain of the Kaitohura Whales. "It's frustrating because I know we have some of the best players in the world. Mahora Muhu, for example, is a force to be reckoned with as is Tama Patariki.

"This is entirely the result of poor management, poor strategy and a bad coach. Mikaere needs to go!"

Wins in both upcoming pool games are essential if Tangatarehua is to have any hope of progressing beyond the group stages, but considering their upcoming opponents even die-hard fans see this as increasingly unlikely.

Despite protests and riots at home, reports suggest that the Rehuan fans who travelled to Hannasea have been much better behaved, with many choosing to distract themselves from their disappointment by enjoying the many sights that the host nation has to offer and making friends with supporters from other nations.

"It's just a game at the end of the day," said Rangi Roimata, a fan originally from Takutairoa who travelled to Hannasea. "What's much more important is the people you meet from all over the world and being able to bond with people from different nationalities over our shared love of the world's greatest sport."

Scrum!: Tough, But Also Good!

Postby TJUN-ia » Sat Dec 17, 2022 11:32 am

After we put 56 points past a team who do not understand what the expectation of being a debutant is , the Union Jaguars of TJUN-ia were happy to be back to winning ways after the tough loss to Ko-oren. This team certainly took that loss in their stride and Jacob Peterson liked how they just shrugged that defeat off their minds and focused on the rest of this group stage. However, 3 more games remained and Captain Alan Wakefield's team certainly couldn't assume anything at this point. They had to keep fighting until a knockout spot was secured...come what may.

Our 1st game at Moontide Park in Brethwick would be up against the #11 Blue Sharks of Natanians and Nosts, who are currently 1-1 under the stewardship of Mihai Xosé da Silva and the captaincy of Mihai Kaeso Marão. This contest was expected to be a tough one and N&N, a nation that has burned us in the past, had a good day with 26 points - 2 tries through Mihai Carolus César and Caeso Paulus Augustus while Octavius Caeso Numésio went 2/2 on conversions and 4/6 on Penalty Goals. As for us, we certainly made our chances count and while our opponents were focusing on penalty goals, we managed to score 5 tries - 2 each for Kennedy Vakatawa and Shojiro Karakurenai and the final 1 for Jose Valbuena, who also worked 4/5 on conversions and 1/1 on penalty goals. That meant that, despite an excellent challenge from the Blue Sharks, we ended up winning this game 36-26 with a bonus point as well. This didn't feel like a bonus point win, but we aren't ever going to say no to 5 more points.

10 points from 3 games aren't too bad at all and we are certainly happy with being only 3 points behind the leaders, 3-0 Ko-oren, in this group, but we still have two unranked opponents left to play and any dropped points against them may end up being fatal. Up first will be Game 2 at Moontide Park against Depivik, who are currently 0-3 with a PD of -139. Things haven't been going well for them at all so if we drop points, then shit may just hit the fan. GO UNION JAGS!

After what they considered to be a pretty good debut in the RWC, the Italian team was up against Talannua. Here follow some translated quotes from the athletes:

We've convinced Lorenzo that we're wrestling the Byzantines. I think that really helped us out in our last games.
- Niccolò

They told us to wrestle the ball. Seemed odd at first, but it turns out we're pretty good at it. We wrestled it more than the players of the teams we've fought so far.
- Gilberto

I wish my cousin Alaverru were here to see me. He taught me how to wrestle back when we were kids in Sardinia. Unfortunately he had to leave the country for a couple weeks.
- Dominigu

Why are we playing on grass? Sand is superior for playing sports on, in my opinion.
- Ippolito

I have wrestled my entire life. Since I was a lil' Sardinian kid up until now. I even taught my cousin. He's not here though, and that's too bad.
- Alaverru

Those damn Byzantines had it coming. I hate Greek! I hate the Orthodox Church! We are the true descendent of Rome! We are- Sorry what? What do you mean "unprofessional"?
- Lorenzo

Catarina Scott, from TRZ Headquarters, Soria
Touring instead of World Cup: Smart move or shot in the foot?
Lisander Rugby Union official stance is grassroots first. But how much of that isn't in fact bad blood?

Image

After winning the RWC 30, Lisander Rugby plummeted, much to blame on a self-imposed isolation, or perhaps vindictiveness against other organisations. In the Rugby War that took place between representatives of various nations, Lisander, a nation marked by a strong prejudice against Rugby League, seen as an inferior sport, was firmly opposed to hosting two World Cups at the same time in the edition 31, given the different characteristics of the two codes.

The undeniable truth is that the dismantling of the NSRB, caused by the event above, was a blow to the sport's organisation. The NSRB was indeed not a perfect organisation, but its demise caused a collapse in the international Rugby Sevens scene. With the non-return of URSA Sevens and AVBF Sevens, only the Olympic Games and occasional tournaments such as Dragonfly Day remained. Lisander was not very successful in the former (how are we supposed to forget that defeat against San Ortelio that shattered all of our hopes into pieces?), and was not even invited to the latter. A disappointment for the nation that was, for a while, the world leader in the Sevens rankings. The situation is so sad that Esportivan Sporting Festival Rugby Sevens tournament is the most commented thing in Lisanderian Sevens currently. How deep we descended to be supporting a bunch of amateur expats as it was the greatest thing happening in the sport? And before you hit me with rant on the comments, let me say TRZ will be reporting all matches of Sporting Festival down in South Newlandia, in partnership with ExSports.

Of course, until now we only addressed the problems that doesn't infer an action by Lisander Rugby Union. URSA Sevens was organized, as its own name says, by the Soria and Azhaar Rugby Union (URSA), and Alpen View Brew Festival held the AVBF Sevens. And there's nothing to do if Ko-oren doesn't wants us in their tournament. I mean, we even had a cycling team there. But of course, we're not letting LRU antics and inaction off the hook. As you, dear readers, always knew, we always criticized all boards when we deem their work unreasonable. Be contracted receiving in Alicean Pounds is positive when it comes to this. Not even a cent of LRU money is accepted here. Neither from ABRU, just to make it clear.

We had notice of a certain plan, named "Rugby Nations". It should involve nations like Lisander and Alice Bay, then invite nations Neu Engollon and Hutanjia, that distanced themselves from the World Cup organization. I'm not aware if these plans ever reached Teremara or Wishtonia, but I believe not. It was announced as a return of the traditional tests, but never took flight. Instead, running on bad blood, LRU just abstained of joining RWC or sent "makeshift" teams, like these Barbarians, and our prestige gone down. I worry if they're not aware that they are only tarnishing the good reputation of the Barbarian Rugby Club, a traditional institution that LRU (sadly) put their claws on. It is more than evident that they could not go against Kelssek or Abanhfleft first XV. When did the LRU decide that a miserable third place in the group stage would be enough for an RWC?

The official excuse is: We're sending these Barbarians, formed from the best of each one of four regional academies (URSA, Southwestern, Principality and Eastern) to support the grassroots level, while the professional players, coming from TOP 12, will play when it's fair to their clubs to release them, to a Tour of Alice Bay and other Trimaris nations. With these results in RWC, nothing short of ridiculous, nor Alice Bay neither the Trimaris nations will respect Lisanderian Rugby. We only reach knockout round if any of the better ones make heavy mistakes from now on. Took only three World Cups to make us small again. Currently we are behind the Atolls of Scodalek in the group table. A fledgling nation, from a league nobody has ever even seen anything of, who suffered a 22-0 thrashing of Abanhfleft. Does that mean that our youngsters, our future on the field, who suffered a 34 point defeat, are worse than these rookies? To me that's not supporting grassroots. To me that is depressing grassroots. That's shooting ourselves in the foot. And let them not come with a whimper saying "We beat Cardenao by the same 22-0". Atolls of Scodalek beat Cardenao 30-0. If that's not something to be ashamed of (not the athletes, they're only a bunch of kids, but whoever threw them into that hornet's nest), I don't know what is.

Oh, for ruck's sake! Let's be honest here. The situation between LRU and International Rugby is only better than LRU and Professional Clubs. The other demise of the rugby, the Champions Trophy, made interest in club rugby fall also. Championship sides are strapped for cash, making outdoors of its shirts, and it should expand for TOP 12 too, if a new TV contract isn't developed soon. The current one, with TV5, isn't getting update of values since there was not an increase in the views. People are turning back to football, while clubs are surfing in the popularity of hockey due to the effort of the women to develop the sport, while feminism in media pushes for more and more equity in sports. LRU is getting behind on that too, but that's the theme for another post.
