Aussie Rules World Cup V - Signups/Host Bids (CLOSED)

Postby Sylestone » Tue Jun 28, 2022 2:55 am

Welcome back to the Aussie Rules World Cup (ARWC) for its fifth edition, the official cup for Australian Rules football! Over four editions, one particular powerhouse has emerged - Sarzonia - a side of whom have won three out of four editions thus far. However, they will be hard-pressed to make that four from five, for multiple other nations have proved worthy of winning the title - Baggieland, Ko-oren, Sylestone and TJUN-ia just to name the rest of the top five in the ranks. But even they are certainly beatable but rising nations and realistically, anyone can win it. But who will it be?

In order to sign up, just post your intentions as a new post below, saying something such as "We sign up" or similar.

Puppet Policy
Any nation may enter a puppet, but this must be confirmed by both the puppet and the main that they are both run by the same user. Additionally, each user may only enter one puppet and all main nations will be preferred over any puppets participating.

Host Bids
Any nation or user may bid to host the fourth Aussie Rules World Cup, whether experienced or new. Host bids must include proposed formats, tiebreakers, scorination methods and experience while IC information is recommended.
The host bid deadline will be set to July 5 at 8:00 am, AEST (July 4, 10:00 pm UTC). If there are no bids by that point, the bidding deadline will be extended for another three days after the first host bid is announced.

It's nice to see someone bidding! However, I do have a few questions to ask you.

1) In the 24-team format, you mention that the 9-12 seeds playoff for a spot in the quarterfinals. However, in this instance, if the winners progress, that means that there will be ten teams in the quarterfinals. Do you mean seeds 5-12 playoff for four spots in the quarterfinals?

2) In the tiebreakers section, you mention that points differential and points scored are both tiebreakers. Do you mean goals differential and goals scored? Also, in the incredibly unlikely case two teams are equal in this regard, what will be the tiebreaker to split them? A coin toss or something?

3) From your RP bonus subtitle, it appears as though you're using the xkoranate bonuses function and although I may be incorrect here, it's more common to add RP bonus directly to rank. Is there any reason why you've elected to use the bonuses function?

4) Are you aware of the relatively, er, un-volatile nature of the Aussie Rules scorinator, or in other words, that according to a couple of tests I've done, any kind of ranked team has, quite literally, a 99.9% chance of defeating an unranked team and a team with full rank has a 98% chance of defeating a team with a tenth of that rank? How do you plan on countering this?

1)Yes,i'll fix that up later
2)Yes,the final tie breaker is probably gonna be a coin toss
3)no i've noticed in xkoranate when you change the ranks mid competition the table resets to 1 game
4)No,though i'll have a look this afternoon and see ways to fix it

Interesting. I've hosted several tournaments applying RP bonuses directly to skill modifiers and never had this problem.

Good to see a bid! Echoing the above, I advise you to apply RP bonus directly onto the skill modifier, and to not use the RP bonus % functionality. Like Syle, I've never had my results set back to MD1.

Also wanted to bring up something related to point 4: we have one team with nearly the maximum rank possible, 3/4 very high ranked teams, and 4/5 high ranked teams. How will you make sure that upsets are possible (and maybe even necessary)? Remember, that if you make RP bonus higher, that also goes for the top ranked teams, potentially making the gap even wider.

at the moment i'm not exactly sure on a way to do it,i'm leaning towards setting a higher max rank but i'm not sure How it would impact the results

The bidding deadline may have passed 3.5 hours ago, but I'm going to extend it another day as I feel as though productive discussions are underway and calling it now may not be the best.

As far as I know, setting a higher max rank won't really make a difference as the Australian Football formula follows the SQIS formula in association football, meaning that the two team ranks are directly compared against each other rather than to a max rank. You could try experimenting with adjusting minimum ranks or something?

It certainly is refreshing to have a new host bid. I'm sure everyone is tired of going to Baggieland! :)

But I just want to add my voice to the points already raised by Syle and Ko-oren. Especially that bit about all bonus points getting reset to MD1. All points must be accumulative, from pre-tournament points already in the bank to rosters and RPs.
