The United States in 2090 is a nation whose divisions cannot be remedied, or, so they say. In response to years of deadlock in Congress and "do-nothing" presidents, Senator Elias Nickles from Illinois proposes a highly divisive plan. He calls for the states to agree to a constitutional convention: A place to discuss a series of amendments to the constitution to solve the various issues that plague the country. Senator Nickles sees widespread support from the states as all of them agree to participate. But debate quickly escalates into something else: The peaceful dissolution of the country. President Agberin, just two years into his term, now presides over the most tumultuous time in American history since the Civil War.
You can choose to be President Agberin (if you get here first), a senator/representative from a state, or a governor, or even the head of a government agency. Maybe the Supreme Court if you're feeling adventurous?

History
Over the previous century, the United States saw a massive change in its politics. Following the abolition of the Electoral College with the 28th Amendment in 2023, countless factions emerged and existing ones crumbled. The Republicans moved increasingly to the right while the Democrats split in two. The Democratic Party, still exists as a moderate platform. Its counterpart, the National Progressive Party, named after the party of a similar name in 1912, represents the progressive and more radical wing of the Democrats. The Green Party and Constitution Party have both risen in terms of popularity. And for 60 years, this has been the norm. However, these four major parties plus dozens of smaller ones have resulted in a huge division in American society.
President Alexandra Forbes is widely recognized as the last "good president" when her second term ended in 2040. One of the main things she's known for is the expansion of the United States. Three territories joined the Union: Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands. Since then, a massive increase in population, coupled with a string of inept presidents and calls for greater state autonomy, has set the stage for a massive showdown. This was further exacerbated by the outbreak of the Red Plague in 2071, a deadly and disfiguring disease which killed 1.5 million people. With millions more suffering from complications of the disease, it became clear that the states were the reason that it was eventually contained. The federal government's unwillingness or inability to respond forced the states to review their relationship with Washington D.C
