Naturally, the ACLU loved the idea, and gave him a lawyer.

That's hilarious. Maybe I'll try that when I go back to school.

And in Russia, insulting religious feelings is bad.

The Lower House of the Russian parliament has approved a controversial bill which criminalizes insulting people's religious feelings. It could come into effect as early as July if passed by the Upper House and the President.

In the current version of the bill, insulting religious feelings in public can be punished with up to three years in prison. Other possible sanctions include fines up to half a million roubles (about $15,600) and compulsory correctional work.

1) Never, EVER, mock a religion that could/will be full of fanatics.
2) They did it in Russia, a known orthadox nation, whose citizens are known for beating the sh*t outta things.
3) They are trolls. Whether you like it or not, that religion was made to mock other religions.
4) IMO, they deserved it.

Now, I am Christian, but I'm not Christian at the same time. I believe that people are equal, Jesus did more for us that our stubborn minds just can't see (Guys, love eachother. NO, don't kill that guy! NO! STOP! NOW! Oh nevermind.)
Also, I know many atheists who are in agreement. Though not to their same degree, some atheists are just as bad as our Westboro Baptist Church. Honestly, instead of mocking some of the lessons religion teaches (not that shit man manipulates religion into teaching) and follow them? Loving one another? Helping one another? That's all it really does say. I mean, seriously. A sensible person could decode any religious text and find the message to be truly the same, however, no 'pure' religious text likely exists in our industrialized world.

Back to the topic of the FSM, No, I don't like that they were assaulted, but they should have thought it out. Seriously, would you do something like this in Russia? IN RUSSIA? Old Ladies can kick the crap out of Chuck Norris there.

Yes he was. You have a Right to Assembly, but you need to get a permit for that, because we don't want people protesting during peak traffic hours, on the streets of Moscow, or end up in a similar situation.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/26/russia-pastafarian-_n_3816805.html

The Pastafarian rally in Russia on August 17th began in a light-hearted manner, as members of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster took to the streets of Moscow wearing strainers on their heads and carrying various types of pasta to celebrate the tenets of their faith.

However, the day quickly took a dark turn, as members of a Russian Orthodox group as well as the police physically attacked the group, knocking some to the ground and verbally harassing them. Eight Pastafarians were detained and charged with organizing an unsanctioned rally.

Russia's recent anti-gay laws have criminalized behavior that "disrespects religion," penalizing violators with prison sentences of up to three years. These laws don't just affect the gay community, but pave the way for police harassment of many other groups that may fall foul of the vague language of the law.

The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is a religion which was founded in in 2005 in the U.S.A., by atheists opposed to the teaching of intelligent design and creationism in public schools. Since then it's become an international movement largely considered as a satire of organized religion, though some followers of the Church claim that it is in fact a real religion, and the dogma they follow is the rejection of dogma. There are a reported 15,000 members of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster in Russia.

The rally and march was planned to celebrate the recent submission of an appeal to be recognized as a legitimate religion in Russia. The invitation on the group's website said:

To celebrate the creation of the first religious group of the Pastafarian Church of Russia, the bishops, lay people and followers of the Flying Spaghetti Monster are invited to walk through the main streets and squares of the cities and villages of joyful praise for spaghetti and meatballs.

However, not everyone feels so joyful about the recognition of the Pastafarian Church, particularly members of the Orthodox group God's Will, who told Utro that "glorification of the Great Flying Spaghetti Monster offends their religious feelings.” Dmitry Enteo, the founder of God's Will, posted on Twitter that "Pastafarianism is a blasphemous smear against Christianity," according to NBC.

The ensuing video shows members of the police chasing Pastafarians through the streets, who can be recognized by the strainers on their heads.

What are your thoughts on this Nationstates? As an Atheist and personally as someone, who's family is from Russia and as someone who was born there, I find this to be ridiculously shameful.

Indeed it is shameful.

Why should religion be protected from public criticism? And how were they wasting government time and money, and why does it justify the violent attacks anyway?
I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.
