International Basketball Championships IX (RP/Roster/Scores)

IBC IX-Carasatoga, sponsored by 9 Energy

Basketball in Carasatoga
Basketball is an extremely popular sport in Carasatoga second to Baseball and Softball only. The Carasatoga Basketball Association (CBA) was founded in 1917 and today boasts two Divisions, First and Second, each with sixteen teams split into two Conferences. Whenever the IBC comes around, Carasatogans get more excited than for any other international sporting competition, shown in the CBA's eagerness to bid for, and failing, IBC VIII and bidding for the first U-18 IBC. During the U-18 IBC, Carasatogan support for basketball grew incredibly, helping the national youth team to a title. In honor of the U-18 team's success, and of this being the ninth IBC, 9 Energy, the most popular energy drink in Carasatoga has agreed to sponsor the tournament.

Format
With 42 entrants, the teams were split into 7 groups of 6 each. The qualifying round will be a double round-robin with the matches being played on the home team's court and the top two from each group will advance to the round of 16 (considered to be the actual tournament) along with the two next best third place finishers, to be held in Carasatoga in two facilities. Winners will then advance to the Quarterfinals (best of 3), Semifinals (best of 3) and Finals (best of 5), and there will be a consolation game for third place (best of 3) as well as a consolation tournament. Tiebreakers will be: overall record, H2H record, overall point differential, H2H point differential, overall scored points and finally H2H scored points. Friendlies would also be welcome with one friendly per nation in between Qualifiers, and then another friendly after Qualifiers which can be set up and confirmed in the discussion thread.

Stadia
The qualifying will be held in the participating nations' home courts.

Tide Stadium, Newport
Capacity: 9,600

Scorination
The latest version of xkoronate for basketball will be used. RPs will be graded on a 1 to 5 scale with a 20% degradation for each matchday that you do not RP. The RPs will be graded on quality rather than on quantity. Placeholders for RPs will not be tolerated as they accomplish nothing and will result in a deduction in RP Bonus. Scorination will be between 4pm and 6pm EST daily, although this time may not be consistent for the first few matchdays as I had not originally planned on hosting the tournament.

Flames aim to stay strong despite volcanic eruption in Yesopalitha

Perhaps it is a good thing that the Yesopalithan national basketball team has a bye on the first day of competition. Still shocked by the eruption of Mount Calroan, this all-male, all-human team shall try to brush away the bad thoughts and focus on what they are supposed to do - play basketball.

This unranked team will have to beat two unranked teams as well as #3 Cassadaigua, #11 Andossa se Mitrin Vega, #24 Bergnovinaia, and #70 Cakistan in order to reach the playoffs. It will be a tall order, but Coach Scandricks says that the goal is to win some games and develop a good reputation.

Here is a interview with Coach Scandricks:

Reporter: Why have you not included any Vampires, Werewolves, or other Unbidden creatures in your team?

Scandricks: I wanted to show the world that we are willing to play their game. If we had Vampires or Werewolves on our team, other teams might declare that it is unfair. This way, win or lose, we are fair and square.

Reporter: Why do you not have any women in your team?

Scandricks: I was going to, but when Mount Calroan blew up, all the potential women in the team all quit because they wanted to be closer to family, especially those whose family lost everything. I am lucky enough to have the guys that I have right now.

Reporter: How will you spend your bye day?

Scandricks: I reckon we'll have another practice, and then have the players rest up. Hopefully, The Sacred Heart will be filled to the brim when we open international basketball competition against Cassadaigua.

Reporter: Realistically, how do you see your team finishing in this group?

Scandricks: Well, the ranked teams will provide a challenge. Hopefully we can finish third or above. And our competition will remember how hard we played, and how sportsmanlike we were.

Reporter: Anything else you want to add, Coach?

Scandricks: To all those affected by the volcanic eruption, I send my regards and prayers. Hopefully we can entertain you for a few hours to help you forget about your worries.

Reporter: Thank you Coach Scandricks.

Scandricks: Anytime.

Qazox Roster

Postby Qazox » Mon Dec 05, 2011 8:26 pm

Qazox finished 2nd place at the last IBC to Sarzonia of all teams.

But Qazox will once again try to win a basketball title. Here's the unfortunate souls picked to try:

Team nickname: The Raving Idiots
Style: as offensive as possible
RP Permissions: Do what ever you want, except injuries. If you do post before me, please give my starters the majority of the points please.

Coach: Frank "The homeless one-armed bum that lived in the dumpster behind the Pika City Burrito King" Johnson- Once fought an imanginary Muhammad Ali for a sandwich and stabbed Ali in the face with a beer bottle. Turns out it was a police officer, not Muhammad Ali; and it wasn't a sandwich, but a rabid weasel and it wasn't a beer bottle, but his fake arm.

STARTERS
PG #14- Reggie Mata (6'0" 201): Once successfully dribbled the ball twice in a row without losing control!
SG #18- David Palmer (5' 11" 187): Once hit the rim on a 9-ft hoop. Can hit the backboard from within 5 feet!
PF #22- Roger Malden (6'4" 214): Once accidently touched a basketball and he didn't get freaked out by it!
SF #23- Mike Jordan (6'6" 235): Once met his namesake Michael Jordan at an autograph session at the local Ramada Inn!
C #33- Ian Dean (7'3" 267): Once he tried playing basketball, found out that despite his height, he sucked!

Bench:
PG #11- Regina Heinz (5'2" 114): She once beat her brother in a game of one-on-one. Her brother is a quadriplegic.
SG #10- Saul Horowitz (5'4" 148): Once led his Hebrew School team to a school record in points in their closest loss ever. They lost 196-5 to the Qazox school for the Blind.
PF #20- Yami Hino (5'9" 457): He's a sumo wrestler that likes basketball and wears his mawashi during games. Run that through your minds. Here's the brain bleach.
SF #28- Greg Manche (6'5" 301) Once he scored 5 points in a game. Granted it was on a 6 foot hoop and he was 7 years old at the time, but still.
C #39- Ivan Dean (7'3" 266) Ian Dean's twin brother. He's even worse than Ian.

Qazox' schedule for the 9th IBC: Is TBD at the moment, but the group contains the following 6 teams: Bergnovinaia; Silver Beach; Aleckandor; Megadia; and Mapletish. 6 of the best teams in the world! No way this team can even hope of sniffing the playoffs, let alone a title. Don't be suprised if Qazox gets the wooden spoon this time around.

SF Matt Constanzo 6'3" 225 Pure defender little ability to shoot
PF Lance Briggman 6'9" 255 Good defender ok shooter
C Andrey Divac 7'3" 285 Ok defender Beast on low post scoring

Head Coach: William Cahill utilizes a modified Princeton Offense with Joe Wilson dishing the ball to whoever is open and defense is typically man-to-man with either Boggs or Constanzo taking the best offensive player or will use a box and one with Boggs or Constanzo being the one.

It would be easier just to incorporate a "Grief Region" button, so you wouldn't even need to make the effort to do the actual raiding. Players could just bounce from region to region and destroy everyone else's efforts at will, without even bothering about WA status. Wouldn't that be nice. -Frisbeeteria

Postby Cotdelapoms » Tue Dec 06, 2011 4:52 pm

The basketball culture in Cotdelapoms is an interesting one. The sport is one of the most popular participation sports for both adults and children, especially in the south. Basketball courts are everywhere in the major cities and there are no lack of basketball gyms all over. Regardless, it still lags way behind ice hockey, football, rugby union, baseball and curling as a spectator sport- Cotdelapoms' professional basketball league, the CBA/ABC depending on language, has a limited television contract and average attendance at games around 4,000. The Betavalanche.kpz National Championship in Kagdazka & Pazhujebu is actually the most popular basketball competition in Cotdelapoms, but their television ratings are not much better.

BasketCotdelapoms is going into their second International Basketball Championship, having finished with a respectable 4-4 record in the 8th version of this competition. The team is fast and athletic and features some sharpshooters from 3 point land, but will almost certainly get pushed around by the bigger teams. The team eschews a traditional centre to play with three guards, and the two forwards' mostly concern themselves with positioning for rebounds, knowing they won't be gaining many with their height.

Starting Five:
G- Noah Matthews
G- Benoît Landry
G- Lucas Turner
F- Gilles Veillet
F- Hassan Vallejo

Landry and Turner are both good three point shooters, Landry is a little more willing to go to the basket. Noah Matthews is a classic point guard.

Bench:
G- William Griffiths
G- Walid Beauvais
G- Xavier St-Jean
G- Colin Sterling
F- Jean Bassong
F- Younes Senna
F- Andrew Walker
C- Óskar Daigle

Western Cuba National Basketball Roster

Basketball in Western Cuba:
Basketball has long been played by the islanders of Western Cuba, but has never caught on as a major sport. Just as a recreation sport. No major league is sported in Western Cuba, and a new national team has been recently formed. Due to the death of their former coach, half of the roster killed during the Britannian Invasion of Western Cuba, and the rest retiring. It's been a while since the National Team has competed and Western Cuba itself has been involved in a major form of basketball but there are high expectations. At least for the television ratings.

Staff:
Head Coach: Rafael Mendoza, Mendoza has lead the Trinidad University Dolphins as the head coach for the last several years. Winning them a National Championship last spring. Will he bring his success to the national team, or will he fail?

Assistant Coach: William Gonzalez, Gonzalez was the former head coach of Segovia State University but resigned last year due to health problems. William has appeared to recover and is trying to get involved in his basketball career once more. He was a leading candidate for the Head Coaching job but when Rafael Mendoza secured the job he was offered a role as Assistant Coach, which he gladly accepted.

Starters:
PG #12, Alberto Vargas
SG #14, Nesto Ruiz
SF #6, Pablo Lopez
PF #8, Dante Medina
C #1, Paco Pena

Reserves:
PG #25, Montenegro Soto
SG #4, Franco Castro
SF #33, Javier Delgado

C #9, Manuel Perez

ANDROMEDA NEWS NETWORK
Marvin Wood Athletic Complex
Portsmouth, Allied States
6:20 pm

Kent Chapman, veteran sportscaster for the Andromeda News Network talks with the two veterans of the Andromeda Eagles: Center Missy Chambers of Palermo and Forward Julia Gallo of Portsmouth. Chambers is a bit taller and a bit lighter than Gallo. Both ladies are taller and darker than Chapman.

CHAPMAN: Thanks, Billy. I’m here with the two most experienced members of the Andromeda Eagles, Center Missy Chambers of the Palermo Pink Cobras and Forward Julia Gallo of the Portsmouth Pirates. Before we discuss the new Tournament schedule, Miss Chambers, what compelled you to leave Andromeda City after 13 years?

CHAMBERS: Well, Kent. I’ve seen what Coach Annie Navarro did with Palermo last season, turning them into a playoff contender. The Pink Cobras want to become a title contender. They asked me and Cathy Clark from St. Paul to help. They gave us an offer and we both accepted it.

CHAPMAN: How will it feel playing in Palermo after more than a decade in Andromeda City?

CHAMBERS: It always feels good to play, Kent. I just hope I can do my part in helping Coach Navarro at Palermo this season.

CHAPMAN: Ladies, what are your thoughts about the IBC draw? You’re in the same Group with the two-time defending World Champions from Sarzonia. How do you feel about that?

GALLO: We know that the Road to Carasatoga won’t be smooth. 16 teams will get to go. I have no doubt that Sarzonia will be in the sweet sixteen. I also know that if we play our game, we’ll be there too.

CHAMBERS: I’d like to say this, Kent: If Johnny Romanov paid off Tournament organizers in Carasatoga for a good draw, he should ask for his money back.

The three laugh among themselves.

CHAPMAN: What about the revelations from Johnny Romanov about payoffs?

GALLO: I take him at his word. The host committee gave him and the other Sports Commission members money. Tournament organizers from that country get the money back. No blood, no foul.

CHAMBERS: When you go to countries that want to host events, they try to make it worth your while. The example that Romanov talked about is much more bald-faced, but in some ways, it’s to be expected. You don’t take something they offer, they consider it an insult.

CHAPMAN: What about Tournament organizers asking for payoffs?

CHAMBERS: Honestly, I don’t know all the details. I’m just glad that we have a new host, Carasatoga, and that the Tournament starts back up on the first of August. (IC time).

GALLO: We’re also glad that Sarzonia’s back in the Tournament. If the defending World Champions are dethroned, it should happen on the court.

CHAPMAN: Amen to that, Ladies! From the Marvin Wood Athletic Complex in Portsmouth with Missy Chambers and Julia Gallo, I’m Kent Chapman. Back to you, Billy.

Brand-New Fyreballz Squad

After embarrassing performances in the IBCs a while back, the Fyreballz have finally formed a team that qualified for the championships. The young team barely advanced out of their regional qualifier, and thus have little chance for much achievement in these championships. But they can hope?

PG - Lorraine Hamilton - Lorraine is a young woman who plays womens college basketball overseas. She plays point for the men's team due to her small stature, 5'9. She is good at dealing the ball out, but has weak shooting skills. She stars for the women's team and this is her first major experience on the men's squad.
SG - Madhava Bala - Madhava is a great young player, who recently graduated from University of Spitfyred - Central. He is a high-scoring guard with nice jumping skills. He is popular in Spitfyred1 due to his high-price sponsorships. This is his chance to find an spot for the next year on a pro-squad.
SF - Masamba Sefu - Masamba is a rather small forward at only 6'5, but he plays with heart, out muscling stronger players. He is a born athlete, and has huge muscles. His power is his key trait.
PF - Kofi Berko - Kofi Berko is a veteran Fyreballz player, having played for 4 years on the team. He is a bug man at 7'3, but he has nice touch and can shoot well, he is the big man threat off the Fyreballz.
C - Ilan Niek - Ilan is a rather small center at 6'10 and really will struggle against bigger opponents. He has nice weight, but still has issues boxing out. He can help the team out with offensive rebounds, but is a tiny scoring threat. He is surprising good at taking charges and making the FTs.

Big Man - Chad Teddy - Chad is a university junior hoping to beat Ilan our for play time. He is good height at 7'1, but needs to bulk up. The trick for Chad will be scoring a lot and playing good defense. Many think he may start later in the championships.
Smaller Man - Piripi Bala Piripi is Madhava's younger brother and a highly-prized recruit for college. Only eighteen, he is one of if not the youngest player in the championships. He is 6'6 and can play PG, SG, and SF. He is a nice scorer, but needs to improve his defensive.

-3
The team is really weak and depends on Kofi Berko and Madhava Bala for scoring. The team centers on nice passing, and tight defense will trip them up. A huge C will destroy Niek, and the team will most likely lose. The team should struggle to reach .500.

Coach: Henry West (60 years old). West served as coach of the SBA's Portland Lumberjacks until he retired four seasons ago. He remained as a basketball analyst for the Sarzonian Sports Network and three years away from the rigours of coaching gave him fresh perspective. He favours a half court offence and a stingy man-to-man defence, but can adjust depending on the personnel he has or the opponent's greatest strengths. Considered retiring after guiding the team to its second consecutive title and third overall, but decided to announce that this would be his last tournament.
Assistant coaches: Matt Walton (53; head coach of the Woodstock Warriors of the SBA); Dave Tunney (44; head coach of the Wilmington Clippers of the IBL).

Starting lineup
PG: Brandon Collins, 31 (6-foot-4, 205 pounds), Wilmington. Collins led the IBL in assists-to-turnovers ratio with 5.1 in 35 games. He is known as a deft passer of the ball and finished third in the league in assists with 8.9 per game.
SG: Chris Draden, 27 (6-foot-6, 215 pounds), Woodstock. Draden led the SBA in scoring with 29.6 points per game and is surprisingly strong on the boards, averaging 6.4 per game. He isn't that great at creating his own shot, but is working with Walton to improve that aspect of his game.
SF: Will Christian, 31 (6-foot-8, 220 pounds), Tacoma Terror, IBL. Christian has good speed and a deft shooting touch, averaging 15.7 points per game. He added 3.2 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game last season.
PF: George Tblik, 34 (6-foot-9, 245 pounds), Saugerties Breeze, IBL. Tblik is a banger, pure and simple. He has a deft touch inside, but has trouble hitting a jumper beyond 10 feet. Averaged 9.7 points per game and 10.6 rebounds per game.
C: Cole Schooler, 30 (7 feet, 275 pounds), Portland. Schooler led both leagues in rebounding with 14.9 per game. He has a surprisingly strong shooter's touch from the international 3-point line.

Reserves
G Marty Rathburn (6-foot-3, 195 pounds), Tacoma
G Jeff King (6-foot-7, 215 pounds), Woodstock
G/F Terry Fox (6-foot-6, 220 pounds), Rypien Rush, IBL
F Corey Landry (6-foot-9, 230 pounds), Portland
F Gabe Loretta (6-foot-8, 240 pounds), free agent
F/C Joey Mason (6-foot-10, 275 pounds), free agent
G/F/C Matt Wesley (6-foot-7, 255 pounds), free agent

(Yes, Wesley plays all five positions on the court. He has ridiculously good ball handling skills and can hit shots from Newmanistan's four-point line or bang inside. Obviously, his height would be a disadvantage if he were playing the four or the five.)

Note: All home fixtures will be played at The Palestra in Woodstock (capacity 21,730).

Only two teams have won two consecutive International Basketball Championships in the tournament's history. However, only one team has ever won three IBC titles. In addition, only one team has advanced to six consecutive finals, a feat that hasn't been matched in any significant team sport in the multiverse.

That historic team, the one shooting for an unprecedented third consecutive IBC title, would be none other than Sarzonia. Fresh off a 3 games to 1 beating of They Who Shall Not Be Named in the final, the Stars are looking to make what will likely be the final stand for several key players.

One person who is often considered the heart and soul of Sarzonia basketball has already announced this would be his final go-round with the team.

"It's time for me to consider my other pursuits in life," said coach Henry West. "I'm 60 years old and I want an opportunity to enjoy my grandson and step away from a life where I'm expected to teach people other than my own family about basketball."

The opportunity to further cement his team's place in the sport's record books proved too great a challenge for West to pass up. He will return to guide the two-time defending world champions as the team shoots for a place in Carasatoga. West is approaching this tournament knowing that his team's place in the annals of IBC history, if not the sporting world, is already well established. There is further motivation.

"We want to separate ourselves further from Newmanistan and ensure that when people think basketball, they're going to think Sarzonia," said shooting guard Chris Draden, who would likely join West as a first ballot Hall of Famer if the IBC were to establish a Hall of Fame. Draden's role in leading the Stars to three titles in six trips to the final has been well documented. However, he shrugged off the suggestions that he might be the greatest off guard of all time.

"I haven't retired yet, nor do I plan to," Draden said. "Hopefully, I'll have a long time to be able to do the things I want to do and see what history's verdict will be."

Coming back for another season as an assistant manager is Matt Walton, who said he had no thoughts about assuming a head coaching position with another national team.

"Can I guide another team to a IBC title? Perhaps," Walton said. "You can't argue with what we've accomplished here. Besides," he added with a smile. "We have some unfinished business here."

Women Rejoin Yesopalithan Basketball Team

Postby Yesopalitha » Tue Dec 06, 2011 9:18 pm

From the Yesopalithan Sports Newsire: Facts and Opinions Only

After the IBC rescheduled their tournament to take place in Carasatoga, the groupings changed, the schedule changed, and most importantly for the Flames, they were allowed a few more days to get some key players back. There were to be three women on this year's basketball team, but the eruption of Mount Calroan, and the chaos that ensued, had prompted them to stay home. Now, with the relief effort well under way, these three women will join the team.

Bethany Dickinson (Age: 21, 5'10", 150 lbs) is the starting power forward, and Janet Van Haren (Age: 24, 5'11", 155 lbs) a valuable sixth man as a forward/guard. More importantly, Kimberley Jackson (Age: 31, 5'8", 145 lbs) brings veteran experience off the bench as a point guard.

Coach Scandricks commented, "It will take them a while to get flowing, but when they are back to playing form, we'll be a cohesive unit again. The guys actually told me that it was odd to practice without the girls. They are happy to be back."

This did mean that for three men who had joined the team when the women didn't come, this is the end of the road.

"They knew that there were a chance of the girls returning," stated Scandricks, "So it wasn't a shock. We thank them for the work they put in with us, maybe next time."

However, it seems that no matter how many cards the Flames have in their deck, they'll probably be inducted into international basketball competition rudely in their first game. The Flames will have to travel to face the 4th ranked Sibirsky to open the competition.

"They're a great team with great history and athletes," commented Scandricks, "It'll be a tall order for us to handle. But we'll give it our best shot, and win or lose, leave it all on the court. We will show the world that Yesopalithans are hardworking people who play to the best of their ability and have no regrets afterwards. We will strive to represent our country the best way that we can."

Starting point guard Isaac Redman, Jr., stated adamantly, "Don't take this the wrong way. We are in this to win it, but like Coach said, our most important job is to show the world what Yesopalithans are like. Sportsmanship is everything to each one of us, and our team as a whole."

The Flames know that facing the competition out there will be like trying to scale a very tall mountain. But they're willing to take it one step at a time, and the first step is their game at Sibirsky.

From the Sovreignry Sports Network's Website:

After the shocking turn of events that led to the IBC being moved from Mytannion to Carastoga the Sovreignry Falcons are ready and able to compete in their first international basketball tournament. Sources from inside the team say that they have been working hard to get ready for this tournament, not just because it is the first international tournament for the team, but it is the first international tournament any team from Sovreignry has participated in.
"We're all excited to be the first team to represent Sovreignry on the international stage." Said fan favorite sixth man William Chocox. "We might be unranked coming into the competition, but that is only because we haven't had the opportunity to play anybody. We have a tough match-up with 11Andossa se Mitrin Vega on the first day, but I think we're going to surprise some people with how well we'll do in this tournament."
When asked if he was considering changing the starting lineup prior to the next game against 11Andossa se Mitrin Vega Coach William Cahill said that "The lineup we have now is the one we're going with. William is an excellent player, but his style of play is better suited to being the sixth man of the bench. Anyone can see that it's you guys in the media that keep trying to press this starting lineup controversy."
William Chocox responded by saying that "I'm happy being the sixth man and I just want to contribute the best I can."
With that out of the way the Sovreignry Falcons will be traveling to 11Andossa se Mitrin Vega to take on the best they can trot out on the court. Here's hoping that they can pull off the upset and do well enough to advance to the playoff rounds.

SeaDragons Open Tourney Against Falcons

Finally basketball is set to get underway and the Sea Dragons have a brand new team to unveil to the world. Gone is the three guard, small ball, style and in its place a more traditional set that can pound the boards with the best anyone has to offer. The players are young. The coach is young. But the tradition is proud and the game is as beautiful as it ever has been. Point Guard Orundii Dra'nyse is a wizard with the balla and helps elevate the Sea Dragons by dishing more assists (16.3) per game than points (8.7). Perhaps the player who benefits the most from that unselfishness is Center Erougii Ough'nal who has size to control the paint when given the ball on the block. Hope is that his 37.4 points per game in college continue at this level. Tur'mos and Ight'dela can both score in bunches while Ard'augho is a one man wrecking crew on the boards. With a solid bench in place, this edition of the Sea Dragons looks primed to make a major run at a title.

And it all begins as Sovreignry comes calling at the newly opened Inibii Arimu. The Falcons may be unranked but they match up very well across the starting lineup. Mike Thompson and Karl Rogers are the guys who put up the big numbers but the key to their success just might be Mitch Williams who can bury the three in the clutch with the best anyone can offer. As we are playing at home, the crowd in sky blue and yellow should provide the lift we need as we expect there to be very few wearing read and white in the building.
