Baizou wrote:@Q&K: Do you have future trajectories planned for Quartia and Karafuto? What will Lellin Nimagyeo do with her space exploration and human genetic modification platform? Will Karafuto ever become independent?

Thank you for asking, I do have a few ideas. An early goal is for Quartia and Karafuto to lead an initiative to ban fossil fuel-powered vehicles worldwide, which I might write sometime by the end of the year. Another eventual idea is for Q&K to be the first human nation to make first contact with aliens. The human genetic modification was originally so that they'll at least have something to prove that humans are an "advanced" species. I considered using the genetic modification for Q&K to become the primary world power or something like that, but that seems a bit dystopian, and I want Q&K to be a good timeline. As for Karafuto being independent? No. Japan itself will eventually be integrated into Quartia and Karafuto in the next 50 years, with a status in the federation the same as what Karafuto has now. The two governments will consider their people and economies to be so similar already that it's the best solution for everyone. The Emperor would retain a purely ceremonial role as the person who represents Japan, just like the Premier represents Q&K now. The Chinese regions on the western border may become independent, possibly in a territory swap for something China owns.

For me, it is "What is the absence of nothingness" to you?

IC: Basically, think of it as a lingering influence of the Cold War, where the country is kind of right between two of the world's superpowers of the day. Now, not only adding to the fact that Astoria was at the time neutral, it would not have been unhelpful to ready & defend oneself in case someone happens to throw a nuclear missile in your direction.

This rapid militarisation only ended about a decade after said war had by default been won; however, the 2001 attacks happened. tl;dr the Cold War happened, & given our location, it would've made sense at the time to be prepared against potential attacks

OOC: And as to why there's a metric ton of them that heavily exceeds the real-life amount actually produced? That's less of an IC matter, and more of one in which I added quantity numbers purely by guesswork, and less of realistic sensibilities (yes, it'll be rectified soon). tl;dr chalk this part to early installment weirdness
good lord I've spent much more time on this than actual worldbuilding this week aaagh

@Uinted Communist of Africa
Using what each band considers to be Canon? Catsfern. In their Wiki they claim to have conquered their neighbors. They have genetic engineering and drones, probably a PMT-era military of conscripts and a surreal number of +8 billion citizens at their disposal, IMO, why I think NS Stats can get ridiculous if realism is a goal. LP has a well-trained, well-armed and modern military with state-of-the-art technology...of 1964, to defend it's +39 million citizens. The technological and productive rift is far too much even if I'm convinced Las Palmeras has a far more fleshed out military tradition and superior morale. LP's only trump cards would be +30 kiloton-yield nukes, which could dubiously be used tactically to face a landing force and convince the enemy that the price of invading is too high, but the delivery systems would be at risk when facing an enemy decades ahead in technological prowess. Any hopes of a stay-behind insurgency would be stomped on by their potentially enormous deployment numbers so I sure do hope that the UK, France and the USA of 1964 decide to help out LP.

Using NS Stats? I'm not sure. Catsfern's stats are impressive and they outclass LP's in most everything but LP's population is twice as high. The winner of such a confrontation would rest on the Palmeran populace's hypothetical resistance to Catsfern and the Palmeran government's adherence or refusal to Clausewitzian rules.

True, when I was 148cm (about 5 years ago) I weighed 41kg... however, in my opinion losing over 10% of that seems unrealistic without some form of disease or disorder given that adolescents are generally slimmer than adults. Now I'm 185cm and 84kg, and likely won't lose or gain much weight for a few decades. 35kg vs 40kg seems so much greater of a difference than 80kg vs 85kg.

Also, where did you get the setting for your nation?

Why the balloon, and why D'oh?

Also if i can weigh in, i tend to use body visualizer for things like this, and it seems that 35kg at 148cm looks OK if a bit waifish, that's my amateur opinion

Just randomness, as the Nuloerkun state is normally fragmented and anarchic, there is no national flag but there are provincial and city flags despite the small total population.

"D'oh" is just a false cognate here, in the official language it's spelled "Dou" and means about the same as in English; again a random choice.

Sanghyeok wrote: Was there a historical precedent you used when you decided to make Labour the largest party in your government coalition and yet not the leader?

OOC: There was no particular precedent that inspired it; I don't know if any other parliamentary system has either formal mechanisms or informal culture whereby a minority party can claim coalition leadership by virtue of chairing a certain committee. I mostly made the decision because I knew I wanted the coalition's leaders to be Marxist, in order to make the Libertarian membership more obviously bizarre, but I wanted the plurality of government to be Labor because I couldn't picture the plurality of Baizoans being nearly as "radical" as the word Marxist suggested, and while I had already "toned down" the Marxist Party by swapping revolutionism with the Socialist Party I didn't want to make the Marxist name completely meaningless. I imagine the Marxists were the ones who initiated creating the coalition, and in exchange for giving Labor the premiership and executive leadership, Marxists get to chair the committee that grants them coalition and legislative leadership.

(It's also very much the case that I'm just not as well-versed in political science as I am in history XD )

Sanghyeok wrote:Also, was your decision to use instant-runoff in the council an attempt to avoid being taken over by one party as in real life with Japan and LDP?

Yep, exactly. I imagine that most elections in Baizou run on an instant-runoff system anyway, but I felt it was important to specify with the Council of Citizens for the exact reasons you describe. If the plurality of Baizoans vote Labor, and the Council is up to a national rather than prefectural vote, then first-past-the-post plurality voting would either consistently elect 24 Labor councilors or inevitably cultivate a two-party system that competes for the Council. To explain why neither is the case in Baizou, I emphasize that Council elections are instant-runoff votes.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, since in my mind anything with peppers tends to be spicy. I guess it would be pepper, cheese and pork stir fry with rice, or maybe spicy honey curry on rice. If you ever have the chance, please try eating them with strawberry soju and a light dessert such as cheesecake.
Since you were skipped, I'll ask you a question too: as a historian, do you agree with the concept that class struggle is the main divide throughout history? If not, what would you say the main conflict is?

In Australian and New Zealand English, if you call someone a "drongo", you're essentially calling them stupid, incompetent, an idiot etc. I first thought of the name "Drongonia" when I was back in high school a few years ago, as my friends and I were walking around and saw these packets of fried chicken that said "Don't be a drongo - put your rubbish in the bin" or something and we thought it was really funny for no particular reason.

Though of course, there are now many other inspirations that are coming along nicely! It's no longer mainly from Overwatch anymore if you look at it closely!

Oh yeah, I think my love for cats stemmed from as very early as my childhood! Tom and Jerry being one of my favourite shows, I always feel more sympathetic for Tom because at times, he was just sleeping peacefully then bam, got kicked out. :/

I also have a few cats as I grew up. First one is a white and black cat and while I am okay with him, I wasn't too close because at that time I'm just a kid that doesn't care much. Then came this beacon and ball of fluff and adorableness in my life - an orange and white kitten that I really do love! So that is where the Mew comes from, because he reminds me a lot about my kitty cat that I used to have.

How'd you settle on a giant space dragon for your nation's lovecraftian god rather than a more traditional, tentacular monster?

"Firstly sorry Sang! when I posted it was Catsfern still up, and I'm to lazy to edit or think of a question right now!

Secondly, the Giant Space Wyrm still features tentacles! Just not as many as say Cthulu or otherwise! Honestly though It was just a play on words what with "Wyrm" being pronounced basically the same as Worm. Nothing much special beyond that behind the choice."

Gotta ask, and I don't think I asked on the server - why are cats your favourite animals? It's not hard to see that you love and adore them, but is there a particular reason? Or is it like... just because? :p

- Those political party icons are amazing! Where and how did you get the inspiration to do them, and what was the main driving force in making the politics very, very fractured?

OOC: This is the first I've heard of Gaozu, so I've only been mistaken for him once, it seems. But no worries!

And thanks! I made the icons using game-icons.net, and I got the idea from Dungeons & Dragons homebrewers, actually; I know a few who use game-icons to make icons for their homebrew classes, and that gave me the idea to do something similar for Baizou's parties.

As for why there's such party diversity, IC the reason is because of instant-runoff voting. I should probably revise the Factbook to say that parliamentary votes are local, but are also instant-runoff. That reduces the spoiler effect in voting and gives third parties the space to grow and build support. OOC, the reason is that I've lived all my life in a place with a polarizingly, numbingly two-party system, and I wanted Baizou to be something different. It's a kind of escapism. There's also some wish-fulfillment: Baizou's politically diverse parties nevertheless generally agree on the most important questions, like human rights, how to deal with major crises, etc. It's discouraging that that seems like such an unrealistic thing in politics where I live, but at least I can make it the reality in Baizou. There's only twoish or threeish parties that I consider genuinely "bad" parties in Baizou, but when they only have a few percent of the vote each, it's a lot more tolerable than real life, and they're also a lot more subtle than real life has been.

It's 2004. MTish nation with videocassettepunk tech, Japanese heritage, minority of magic occult practitioners, casuistic Catholic plurality, sovereign deriving authority by Anglican coronation, and policymaking so byzantine parties wonder if it'd be easier to pursue agendas via international law.
