NS Arena Bowl I RP/Rosters/Scores Thread

Postby Sarzonia » Sat Aug 14, 2010 6:44 pm

Greetings, and welcome to the inaugural NS Arena Bowl competition, now brought to you by ViZion World Corporation, the international business leader keeping the world spinning!

Some of the nations competing may already be familiar with the rules of this tournament, but for those who aren't, this tournament was originally known as the Sarzonian Indoor Gridball Cup. Because this tournament will be a continuation of that competition, it will be retroactively referred to as NS Arena Bowl 0.

The 15 nations that have signed up are asked to provide us with your lists of players and coaches, along with accounts and descriptions of your matches in this realm. In turn, we will place you in three groups of five teams apiece. Each team will play the other twice in double round robin competition before the top 10 teams qualify for the knockout rounds.

The three group winners will automatically clinch the top three seeds in the knockout rounds, and the seven remaining spots will be determined by won-loss record. The other tiebreaking procedures in effect shall be as follows: Head-to-head results, overall point differential in head-to-head results, overall point differential, most points scored, coin flip. The first knockout round phase shall feature the seventh seeded team facing the 10th seeded team at Estrella Motor Cars Arena in Wilmington. The eighth seed will face the ninth seed at The Annex in Nicksia. The higher remaining seed will face the second seed in the quarterfinal round; the lower remaining seed will face the top seed in the quarterfinal round.

The groups will be as follows:

Group A
Sarzonia
Delaclava
Mossulia
Sibirsky
Freelasio

Group B
Andossa Se Mitrin Vega
Qazox
Krytenia
Cosumar
Mytannion

Group C

There will be an off day 22 August. Matchdays 6-10 will resume 23 August with the same matchups, but with away teams hosting and vice versa. If you were listed as the home side in the first meeting, you will be the away side in the second meeting. Matchdays 6-10 have been added to the above. Links to each matchday will be added as they happen.

Roster.

#1 - Jose Graw - Starting Quarterback
An explosion on legs, in terms of both power and temper, Jose is the brother of the Brutes starting QB and international star, Dana Graw. Jose has the ability to bullet a short range pass into the hands of even the most buttery-fingered of receivers, and he's not afraid to get dirty and run the ball himself, making him a double threat to any under-compensating defence.

#2 - Igel Lawston - Second String Quarterback
Whilst Jose is the non-stop battering ram of the Brawlers offence, Igel is their finesse thrower, their 4th-and-long specialist. Calm and flowing, he stays in the pocket even when the line crumbles around him. That extra split second is all he needs to get off the perfect spiral, even if it means he gets clobbered as soon as the ball is released.

#3 - Fo Jebedian - Starting Fullback - Starting Mac Backer
If one of your players is being stretchered off the playing field, there's a ninety percent chance that Fo is the bloke that put them there. Hovering the five foot ten mark and weighing enough to put a bull to shame, he is a mean bastard with more acceleration than a muscle car. His stamina leaves something to be desired, but by the forth quarter he'll have already left his mark on the opposition.

#4 - Wil Havi - Starting Tight End - Starting Jack Backer
A strong starting step, a freight train hit and a vice like grip makes Wil the best tight end Rennidan has to offer. He's in his second year of university at Arcorsis State, and is currently leading the University Arena League of Rennidan in terms of yards after catch. He's not the best Jack Backer in the world, but his tackling is consistent, and once he has his hands on you there is no way you're breaking the tackle.

#5 - Samuel Dakk - Second String Fullback/Tight End - Second String Linebacker
Whilst he's not an amazing player, Dakk is still a reliable second string player in any of four positions on the field. He'll step in when Fo or Wil need a breather, or get injured, and doesn't mind stepping back out when the two first string stars are ready to get dug in again.

#10 - Nigel Kaya - Starting Wide Receiver - Starting Defensive Back
Speed and grace of a gazelle, tackling prowess of a hungry cheetah, Kaya is the star receiver of the Brawlers and a mean defensive back at that. He's Lawstons go-to-guy when an immaculate reception is needed.

#81 - Sim Nok - Starting Wide Receiver - Starting Defensive Back
Harsh acceleration, brutal strength and a tendency to rather hit the man covering him instead of catching the ball, Sim Nok is a force to be reckoned with. He'll be running mostly hooks, curls and screens, but don't be shocked when you see him on a fly or post.

#12 - Henry Dunn - Defensive Specialist - Starting Defensive Back
Dunn is the man that will always be lined up against the fastest, hardest and most reliable receivers, because he is faster, harder and even more reliable. He'll be leading the Brawlers in interceptions, no doubt about it.

#55 - Sitba Nor - Starting Center - Starting Nose Tackle
A beast of a man, Sitba is the strongest (and heaviest) player on the Brawler roster. Any player lined up against him should expect one of the hardest fights they'll encounter this Bowl.

#66 - Novak Kellbien - Starting Left Tackle - Starting Defensive End
The man in charge of Graw's blindside is of hefty build. A fast kickslide and an aggressive hit means he's always got his quarterback's back.

#77 - Harold Hilgar - Starting Right Tackle - Starting Defensive End
Hailing from the farming lands of Viltek, Harold gained Rennidanian citizenship at the age of eighteen through a rugby scholarship. He's moved on from his native sport to a far more foreign one now, and is revelling in the ability to hit people with little regard for his own safety. If he gets past your O-Line, you know your quarterback is in trouble.

#0 - Cecil V. Clivston - Starting Kicker
On a team that'll always go for it on 4th and 10, Cecil is happy to spend his time in the kosher subs room, waiting for a kick off or any PAT attempts that may come his way.

Mister Carter - Coach
Not a lot is known about the enigmatic Mister Carter, except that he himself funds the Arena team and their playing complex.

Arena.

Playing Field.

A large metallic, off-white room with shallow dark-red lines painted to mark out an Arena football grid, the Room is a truly unique playing experience. Away from the boos, hisses and cries of the fans, the Room is an arena built solely for the players to do their job. Twenty four wall-fixed swivel cameras, five roaming ceiling cameras and a helmet camera for every player offers the viewers online and at home an immersive experience whilst allowing the players a silent playing area so that the game may take their full attention.

First Aid.

With three of Rennidan's top doctors and five highly qualified paramedics on standby with the top medical technologies and medicines, the Room's first aid area is one of the finest in the Arena Bowl. An emergency exit, leading to an underground ambulance waiting area (which, in turn, leads to the R25 motorway) has been fitted in case any players need to be transported to the nearest hospital (Nature's Hope Central, 2.8 miles away).

Substitution Rooms.

To prevent jeering from opposing teams, substitutes and other team personnel are kept in their own, sound proofed private room (apart from coaches, who are permitted on the sideline). A surround sound cinema system, as well as a built in 160inch 3DLEDTV, provides the teams with the only view of the game they'll ever need, and a buffet table, ranging from a simple omelette to a more extravagant Rennidanian pheasant roast, as well as a drinks table containing anything from water to the latest isotonic sports drink, means that no team will enter The Room low on energy.

As ArenaBowl I nears its dawn, the Mytanar team, is feeling 'edgy, but happy to be here'...quoted directly from an interview with head coach Doko Vujcic...we asked the questions, he answered.

MG: How are preparations for ArenaBowl I going?

Doko Vujcic: Well, we're happy with our preparations, and the training schedules are going great, I'm confident of a good tournament.

MG: 'A good tournament?' What would a good tournament for Mytannion be?

Doko Vujcic: Well, I'd be happy finishing 3rd in the group - which I feel, would be a good position for us, as long as we can get some results against teams we can - hopefully - beat.

MG: Which teams should we beat, and where will we get these points from?

Doko Vujcic: Obviously, there are no easy games in this, it is the elite players from all the elite nations coming together for a one-off showcase of amazing talent...We can lose against any of these teams, we could win against any of these teams. We will have to play good football, if we want to win any games, and I feel, if other teams are off the pace, we will try to exploit that, and we will try to punish them.

MG: Fair enough, any key players as of the moment?

Doko Vujcic: Of course there are always going to be special players, but not one person is bigger than the nation, if every player pulls together, and plays well, we can win, if one person decides that they are the player the team should revolve around, then we won't end up winning games, because we'll end up having the situation where one man believes they are bigger than the team.

MG: It has been nice talking to you Doko, thanks.

Doko Vujcic: Thanks for talking to me...

So they, are the answer he gaves us. Read between the lines, and well, it looks like the team is doing well...maybe?

Anyway, here is the breakdown of the teams we will be facing in the group stage. Just a little bit of information before we go into that:

Every team has to play 8 games, meaning they will have two byes in the 10 Match Days.

There are 3 groups, with 5 teams in each.

The Group stage will commence from Tuesday the 17th of August until the 21st August, there will then be a one day break, and then the second half of games will continue from 23rd of August, until the 27th of August.

The knockout rounds will begin 29 August after a one-day bye with the 7 v. 10 and 8 v. 9 matches.

The quarterfinals will take place 30 August and the semifinals will take place 31 August. The third place match and final will happen 1 September.

That is the Information, now here are the teams we shall be facing...

Image Krytenia: Quoting directly from MytoPedia, this nation, has a population of 12.623 billion. So they should be able to produce a starting 11 for both offense and defence. So their starting 22 should be awesome. Out of the whole population, surely they can produce enough talent for this starting 22, it is also a nation, that is well known within our own borders and one we have heard a lot about. This is possibly the most dangerous team we will play. Our scouts haven't managed to get any information yet on either their players, or coaches/tactics.

Image Qazox: This is the team we think will cause us a lot of problems, they are an efficient, if not spectacular outfit, and have a well-organized team, with quarterback and #13 Jake DeMotta looking very handy in training, and their whole team looking quite talented. We haven't heard much about this nation..but they look good, if that pays of on the pitch, we could have a whole lot of problems, even though are team - could - match them. If the Hemisphere Bank Center, in Rockport, is filled to the capacity, it will make for a rocking atmosphere, and could be pretty intimidating.

Image Andossa Se Mitrin Vega: Could be a very good chance to win a few points. Both at home, and away - we could if playing well, win points against this team, who are rather in the same boat as us, not that well proven on the ArenaBowl stage, but look well organized, and have some useful players - and we'll have to watch out for their quarterback and #12 Jais-Irjin K’baryth, if we want to get a win against this team, they play at the newly constructed underground (yes we said underground!) Stadii Se Draggonnii Arcea - which has been carved from the stone, far underneath the outdoor stadium, dungeon comparisons have already been made, and it could be a highly intimidating and mysterious atmosphere for visiting teams.

Image Cosumar: This could be the easiest chance to gain points in our group, we haven't really seen much of them, they are a fairly experienced nation, but we haven't seen much, if nothing of their team, which is why we can't give much description, their coaching staff, seemed desperate to keep their team selection/tactic under wraps, until the last possible minutes, and so desperate, that their roster list, hasn't even been submitted the night before the first match day.

And here is my Group Stage prediction:
1. Krytenia
2. Qazox
3. Mytannion / Andossa Se Mitrin Vega
4. Andossa Se Mitrin Vega / Mytannion
5. Cosumar

-This is based totally on the fact that some teams have higher reputations, and have submitted their roster list.

So, I expect Krytenia to come first, with maybe, a bit of danger from Qazox, if Krytenia aren't careful, they may, be overtaken by that efficient, well-organized, well worked team. Then, it will be either ourselves or Andossa Se Mitrin Vega, if we pick up points against them, it'll be us, if we don't - it'll be them. And then, I feel Cosumar will finish bottom of the group, purely on the basis that they haven't submitted their roster as of yet.

Here is our fixture list for the group stage:

17th August- BYE
18th August- versus Krytenia (Somewhere in Krytenia) -
19th August- versus Andossa Se Mitrin Vega (General Jarko Arena) -
20th August- versus Cosumar (Lenny Fox Dome) -
21st August- versus Qazox (General Jarko Arena) -
22nd August- NO MATCHES PLAYED.
23rd August- versus Qazox (Hemisphere Bank Center) -
24th August- versus Cosumar (General Jarko Arena) -
25th August- versus Andossa Se Mitrin Vega (Underground: Stadii Se Draggonnii Arcea) -
26th August- versus Krytenia (General Jarko Arena) -
27th August- BYE

So we get to play our last match at home, in front of our own fans, hopefully this will ensure that we can get a good atmosphere going, and our men, will put on a show for us!

Preview: Western Cuban Gladiators v.s. Wadomia

Tomoroww will be the first game ever in the history of the Western Cuban Gladiators and will be played in the Coliseum in downtown Vladgrad. The home of the Western Cuban Gladiators. Now let's take a brief look at the Western Cuban Gladiators roster and let's think of how our first match will come. The game will be played against Wadomia which will be our fellow rivals in the NS Arena Bowl.

Western Cuban Gladiators

Advantages: Michael Wilson is a well respected arena football coach in Western Cuba. He has had the expierence of being an assistant coach for several teams in the NS Arena Bowl for many years and now is having his first shot of becoming a head coach. He knows the playbook good and will be a great coach for the newcomers on the Western Cuban Gladiators.

Disadvantages: The inexpierence of the Gladiators is something to be worried about. Usually expansion teams in any sports league don't do well except for a couple occasions. However though we are confident for the Western Cuban Reds to have a great season in the NS Arena Bowl.

What we think will happen

The Western Cubans will pull away in a thriller in the first game in there debut in the NS Arena Bowl against there rivals Wadomia.

Score: 66-63 Western Cuba wins

Our Prediction Record: 0-0

Interview with QB

Interviewer: Jeff how nervous are you about your game tomoroww.

Jeff Hammond: What do you think? Of course I am this is my major arena football debut in my hometown. I was nervous but I think I will be fine. With the fine talent of Michael Wilson there is hope on my skills and I believe that are football team will become great.

Interviewer: Will a playoff berth happen or is it a dream?

Jeff Hammond: It will happen this year. I have great confidence in the Gladiators and we have a great season ahead.

Interviewer: Thank you for your time.

Jeff Hammond: Your welcome.

OOC: If someone could create kits for Sarzonia (primarily navy blue coloured for home matches and primarily white for away), that'd be awesome. If someone's willing to take that on, I can chat with you on my ideas for the look.

Sarzonia Stars
If you RP first, you may:
Choose scores: Yes
Godmode scoring plays: No
Injure Players: Yes, within reason (but I choose severity). No killing.
Godmode injuries: No
Godmode other events: Stuff within reason is OK. If it's ridiculous or it ignores Sarzonian culture, it's not OK.
The home field is The Palestra in Woodstock, capacity 21,730. It is part of the Dave Wilson Athletic Complex, which is inspired by but much smaller than the Delaclava National Athletic Complex.

Roster (No., Position, Name, Height, Weight, Biography. Starters in bold):
2 K Xander Ryan (5-foot-11, 175 pounds), Woodstock Capitals. The 23-year-old was the final cut from the Stars outdoor national team because he was competing against Stars kicker Adam Novak. He beat out other kickers for the job here.
3 QB Chris Painter (6-foot-1, 205 pounds), Portland Boilermakers. Painter's size and arm strength are a liability for him in the outdoor game. However, he can make all the short and intermediate throws the indoor game requires. At 25 years old, this may be his best chance to play professionally.
5 QB Matt Trudeau (6-foot-3, 215 pounds), Wilmington Clippers. The 22-year-old Trudeau has the arm, the mobility and all the physical tools to be a great quarterback. He still needs the experience and polish he hopes to get with the indoor Stars.
20 WR/DB Chris Jackson (6-foot-2, 210 pounds), Portsmouth Royals. Jackson seemingly glides to the gridball with every step on both sides of the ball. The 26-year-old has honed his skills as a precise route runner and tries to use that skill to anticipate the ball when he plays defence.
21 WR/DB Taylor Brandt (5-foot-8, 195 pounds), Nicksia Nautilus. He often uses his relative lack of height to his advantage, being able to duck under hits or dish them out. The 27-year-old spends a lot of time in the gym and it shows.
23 WR/DB Thomas Bowles (6-foot-1, 205 pounds), Tacoma Titans. The 29-year-old might well be listed as a defensive back first because that's how he made his home in the IGL, but he's also learning how to run routes and catch balls as a receiver. He'll be on the bench in case he's needed.
24 WR/DB Lyle Tunney (5-foot-11, 195 pounds), Portland Pirates (Incorporated Gridball League). A dangerous kick returner in college, the 22-year-old Tunney was signed to serve as the No. 3 receiver for the Portland Pirates in the Incorporated Gridball League. He hopes to impress his current employers in this tournament.
46 DS Ned Dayton (6-foot, 225 pounds), Woodstock Wings (IGL). The 26-year-old Dayton plays a hard hitting strong safety in the outdoor game. In the indoor game, he alternates between the weak-side linebacker and defensive back.
47 RB/LB Jon Lowell (6-foot-1, 230 pounds), Lexington Lizards. Lowell, 27, serves as the big, bruising running back on offence and as the strong-side linebacker on defence. Enjoys being a punishing hitter on both sides of the football.
48 RB/LB Dave Stephens (6-foot-2, 240 pounds), Saugerties Surge. The 28-year-old uses a straight-ahead style as a runner and willingly invites contact as a linebacker. He can run sideline to sideline in the outdoor game, so his pursuit indoors will likely be deadly.
50 OL/DL Chris Henning (6-foot-3, 285 pounds), Woodstock Capitals. Team captain. Henning, 35, often plays centre in the three-man line and also nose tackle, though he would be considered undersized for that role in the outdoor game. His conditioning is the best of any lineman who tried out for that position.
53 OL/DL Keith Gilbert (6-foot-2, 305 pounds), Portland Boilermakers. The 33-year-old is responsible for protecting Painter's blind side. He relies mostly on technique and an ability to quickly get in his stance. Is not known for his speed but has decent enough quickness.
54 OL/DL Markus Leonard (6-foot-5, 315 pounds), Saugerties Surge. Leonard is the biggest lineman not to crack the starting eight on either side of the ball. The 23-year-old still has potential and growing up left in him.
OL/DL 57 Jack Milano (6-foot-4, 320 pounds), Nicksia Nautilus. Milano, 24, is the strongest of the lineman and has been known to forklift opposing linemen on either side of the ball in training camp.

Once again the world of international sports is expanding, this time into the world of indoor GridIron. For those who do not know about this version of GridIron, the basics of the game aare linked to here: ArenaBowl.com/Indoor GridIron Rules. This type of GridIron usually produces high final scores and lightning quick scoring as there are only 8 players on the field at a time.

Image
The Qazox Avengers, logo above, will be one of 15 teams to compete in the Arena Bowl competition. Jake DeMotta, the starting QB; has had some experience playing Indoor GridIron, albeit in a league that only used 40 yard fields. Other than DeMotta, no other members of the team have signiifcant Indoor experience. Most of the team is comprised of the final players cut from the most recent World Bowl. While the inexperience of the team might be a liability, the vast majority of the other 14 teams have about the same limited experience playing this type of GridIron; so it is a mostly level playing field.

The Hosting Arena for the Avengers' home games will be the Hemisphere Bank Center, Rockport Capacity: 18,920. All Qazoxian games will be carried live QOXSportNet.com at 7:00 local time.

QB Injury Brings New Starter to the Sky Dragons
K'baryth to Play Arena Ball

The Arena Bowl. High-Flying, Fast-Paced action that should leave even the most die hard grid ball fan breathless. Long bombs surrounded by furious activity as everyone tries their best to outscore their opponents. Defense is rarely given consideration at all in this format and that suits us quite well, as our World Bowl team gives little consideration to defense anyway.

And The Sky Dragons have some big news to announce before the tournament even plays its first game. Late Friday, as the team went through their final tune up for this competition, quarterback Zedyhi Cha'hat went down awkwardly following a routine non-contact drill. The reason - torn acl that will keep him sidelined for quite some time.

That injury left ASMV with a ton of questions as to their fate in this tournament. Should it rest on the untested shoulders of reserve QB Xatat Ald'say? Even he was hard-pressed to find the bright side of that equation. What then was an acceptable answer?

It came in the form of a late night call from the ASMV national grid ball team’s superstar QB Jais-Irjin K’baryth whose team had just lost in the round of 16 to Secristan.

“Zed tells me you need a QB. I’m your guy” And just like that the problem was solved. A grid ball QB who rules the field and demands respect. A QB who thrives in a pass-first offense and puts up huge numbers in the process. A QB that knows how to win when the game is on the line. The addition of K’baryth may just move ASMV from the ranks of “contender” to the ranks of the favorites.

Now for the competition.

Qazox is a solid team in whatever sport they choose to enter and should give us the most competition for the group title and the automatic qualifying spot that goes with it.

Krytenia is a bit of a wild card. They have the potential, but we never know what they will bring to the table. Hit or miss as always they are a team to watch.

Cosumar. We seem to see these guys everywhere anymore. A solid team is what we expect, and they could be the dark horse of the group.

Mytannion. New and spunky. We admire their aggressive approach in the media - except for them picking us as the mark they have to take points from. We fully expect to be much higher on the table than that. Should be nice to see how well their media keeps up.

All-in-all this has the opportunity to be a very vocal group and as there are no current rankings, anything could happen.

And Mytannion has already made reference to our new arena being a bit intimidating. Good. And it will be loud too. 50 ft of stone above and miles of it in all

OOC: @Andossa Se Mitrin Vega - My media approach is beautiful isn't it? Sorry about marking you as the team we may be able to take points off, and the prediction too, but I'm just doing what newspapers world around do, support their team, and criticize others, but when they end up losing all their games, calling their team terrible, and saying we were never going to win :p

Churchma sends same Arena Football all-star team from last year to NS Arena Bowl 1
Churchma Sports Inc.

The same team led by quarterback Ryan Kemper will be back for their second shot at winning the arena bowl title. Last year they went 3-1 in pool play, before falling in the quarterfinals to South Norwega. All signs are pointing to a great finish for this years team- as every single player returns. That kind of experience is almost unheard of in this type of tournament.

The "Churchma Raiders" will play their home games in Lexington, Moorhatch, Churchma, at Miles Deebok Stadium (seats 30,000). MD Stadium was made for Arena Football only, and is the largest of it's kind in the region. The Raiders will be coached by Mel Dudley.

Quarterback
#17- Ryan Kemper (6’2, 209, 35 years old)- Kemper is one of the oldest guys on the Churchma squad, but he brings a ton of knowledge to the team that a younger quarterback doesn’t have. (Hudsonville Univ)
#4- Craig Stafford (6’5, 240, 29 years old)- Stafford is perfect for indoor ball because of his laser arm and massive frame. Only thing keeping him off the field right now is lack of mobility. (Univ of Millikan)

Defensive Specialist
#9- Renaldo Buzz (6’3, 237, 24 years old)- Buzz is the first of many players to come from Colden University. This guy is a physical and fast football player. Ran a 4.57 forty yard dash this spring. (Colden Univ)
#40- Rashaad Raleigh (6’2, 245, 32 years old)- Multiple use guy that can play at the linebacker position or as a defensive end. (Bostwick State)

Runningback/Linebacker
#31- Joe Blackney (6’0, 213, 24 years old)- Blackney is fresh out of college and is ready to tote the rock. Blackney was a 1st Team All-CCAA as a senior. Great runner, and hard hitter. (Colden Univ)
#44- Paul Argo (6’3, 245, 31 years old)- Argo is also a mixed martial arts fighter. Known as the hardest hitter on the team. (Lamkin College)
#2- Rob Ridgeway (5’10, 199, 28 years old)- Ridgeway is the speedy guy of this position group. Participated in track during college- running the 100m and 200m. (Univ of Millikan)
#38- Bobby Acre (6’2, 228, 25 years old)- Acre is a sound ball player that rarely makes a mistake. Very consistent player. (Omon State)
#29- Brandon Mazur (6’1, 217, 28 years old)- Mazur is the most versatile of the group, good runningback and linebacker. (Phillips City Univ)
#47- Scott Romano (6’3, 219, 25 years old)- Romano is a raw player, tall and skinny guy that just has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. (Univ of Council)

Offensive/Defensive Line
#79- Charles Finley (6’5, 276, 30 years old)- Finley is the thickest guy on the team, it doesn’t look like there is an ounce of fat on his body. He’s a great player on both sides of the ball. (Hudsonville Univ)
#65- Jeremy Dewey (6’3, 295, 33 years old)- Dewey has been around a while, and has a great understanding of the game. (Bostwick A&M)
#72- Buster Grain (6’4, 272, 29 years old)- Grain can effectively play offense or defense, as he did both in college. (Phillips City Univ)
#92- Sam Farlee (6’1, 269, 27 years old)- Farlee is a very technical lineman. Also was a wrestler during his high school and college days. (Univ of Griesen)
#66- Mike Lucks (6’6, 313, 30 years old)- Lucks is a tall guy that could get in the weight room to get rid of some of that bad weight, then you might see him on the field. (Bostwick A&M)
#77- Ronnie Finley (6’4, 280, 26 years old)- Ronnie is the younger brother of Charles Finley. He provides some depth to the line. (Univ of Council)

Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
#80- Mario Towns (5’10, 181, 27 years old)- Towns is the fastest guy on the team. Football isn’t even his main sport. He nearly left Churchma because the track team wasn’t up to his standards. He’s been clocked at 10.1 in the 100m. (Colden Univ)
#22- Mike Mraz (6’0, 196, 31 years old)- Mraz is a great shutdown corner that also has the ability to play WR because of his hands. (Bostwick A&M)
#8- Calvin Winner (5’11, 202, 25 years old)- The name says it all. Winner is an absolute competitor. A couple years out of college and he is already ready to go. (Univ of Council)
#12- Oscar Rush (6’2, 200, 32 years old)- Rush is a workhorse that knows the playbook as well as the coaches do. Another decade from now you can expect him to be a head coach somewhere. (Omon State)
#6- Leroy Beede (6’1, 191, 28 years old)- Beede provides depth to this position group. Very average player that has decent hands and decent speed. (Univ of Millikan)
#19- John Langford (6’3, 196, 28 years old)- Langford is a good receiver but can hardly play defensive back. Tall guy that jump balls get thrown to. (Phillips City Univ)
#23- Jim Bartel (6’4, 183, 31 years old)- Bartel is essentially a twig out on the field, but if he puts on some muscle he could be a threat. (Colden Univ)

Kicker/Punter
#5- Ricky Stockard (6’2, 262, 38 years old)- Stockard is old enough to garner the nickname “gramps”, and he also might be mistaken for a lineman. Don’t be surprised if you see him at a McDonald’s in a town near you. (Colden Univ)

As I take a long, final drag from the dying stump of cigarette, the anxiety of being caught fades away. My vantage point on the roof means that I'd see someone before they even had a chance of spotting me, but when you're doing something that you know will get you in trouble, even if there's no way of being caught, a little part of you still screams paranoia. The worst that'd come of it is a dressing down in front of the rest of my team, and maybe even a small cut in pay, but that's bad enough to turn my itch for nicotine into a dirty little secret.

There's two ways onto the roof of The Room. The first is a maintenance ladder, around the corner to the right of the main entrance. It's only worth it during the day, because at night the guards tend to lock up the small, freshly polished metal grid to prevent any would-be vandals or die-hard fans from doing their own dirty deeds atop the pristine roof. The second way is far sneakier, involving removing a ceiling plate, crawling under the air ducts and going through a skylight. It may be a lot of hassle, but it's worth it if it means not getting caught.

I'm supposed to be leading by example. The golden boy of the Brawlers. When Fo got stripped down after Mister Carter heard he'd been smuggling crinkle-cut Mountaineer crisps (grilled bacon flavour), I was the player he used as an example of willpower. I'd given up smoking, alcohol and other less-than-legal things in order to become "the best possible player". I think if Mister Carter really knew half the shit us guys got up to outside of his precious training facility he'd bust a nut.

I sigh and flick open the slightly crumpled flip top box. Two cigarettes left. I had a full pack of twenty when I came up onto the roof. My lungs are gonna' kick my arse in the morning, no doubt. I wouldn't smoke so much if I didn't get such bad nerves before a game, but I get nervous because I'm worried my smoking's gonna' affect my fitness. It's a beautiful circle.

"Oiyup."

I feel as though my skins just detached from my body, my heart's someone up by my tonsils. On a deadly silent night, when you're up to illicit activities, the last thing you want is to suddenly hear a voice behind you. I feel like I'm in a Hitchcock as I slowly turn to meet the intruder of my hallowed land. But my skin clings back to my body and my heart retreats to its usual hiding place as I catch the unforgettable grin of Fo Jebedian. For a man with only five teeth, his smile is bizarrely charming.

"Thought I'd catch up on old habits, y'know?" He chuckles as he pulls a foil packet from his pocket. Sure enough, Mountaineer's Crinkle Cut, Double Mozzarella and Beef flavour.

"Ol' Mister Carter's gon' kill you if he catches you with th' fried 'taters." My accent isn't as thick as my brothers, but it's still prominent enough to give most foreigners an issue in understanding.

"He can kill me all he wants, nothin's gonna' stop me from gettin' my deep fried, full of taste, crinkle cut, holiest of holy food, brother." He raises the packet of crisps like it's a divine goblet, full of water from the Fountain of Youth. "This here is real athlete fuel, man. None of that, isotonic, biometric, high super-lactose whey fish protein drink nonsense." Fo's laugh was as endearing as his smile, a full on belly chuckle that shook his entire mass, and leaves me pondering how a man of his size made it through the skylight without me hearing. "Besides, I think him catching me with a few crisps won't be much of a priority if he see's you with a stick of that a'tween your lips."

I smirk as I light my penultimate cigarette. "You ain't gonna' tattle on me, are you?"

Another full belly chuckle as Fo splits the bag open with his monstrous hands. "Hell no, man. We're family now. Secrets stay secret, skeletons in the closet and all that, y'know?"

I nod as I take the first inhalation. I can't take a full lungs breath any more. I get to about three quarters and suddenly it's like the smoke has hit a road block. I know I'm going to regret all this training tomorrow, but right now I'm just happy to have found a kindred spirit in this weird new world. I toast my cigarette to Fo's bag of fatty food, and we spend our time on the roof together into the early hours of the morning, sticking it to our new found boss.

Arena Bowl: The Secret of Success?

If you happen to frequent Junction 8 of the R25, you may have noticed the sudden construction of a small, private and extremely well guarded road leading up to a new sterile white block in the foothills of Mount Rennida. We've finally been given the authority to assure you all that it is not a "government lab for testing chemical revival on dead soldiers" as one paranoid tabloid paper was quick to assume, but something just a little different: the home of Arena gridiron in Rennidan.

The high-octane, high-scoring indoor sport has finally made its way past the Great Walls and into the heart of the Golden Nation. With rumours of a new government backed gridiron team running through the mill, some are seeing this smaller, privately funded excursion as a testing of the waters. What we know so far is that there will be no spectator attendance at this fancy new Arena facility (creatively dubbed 'The Room'). Instead, in a sterile white, metal cuboid, with deep red lines marking out every 5 yards, two teams will face off in the ultimate mind bending game of Arena gridiron. With no fans to support or jeer them, and not even their own substitutes in the same room, the players will have nothing but the game before them to concentrate on.

"It is a test of a players ego." Told head coach and owner of the Brawlers, the mysterious Mister M. Carter. "When they play at home, they have thousands of fans to cry their names, countless girls flocking to lay with them and hundreds of faceless frat boys doing keg stands in their honour. The come here and they get, well, nothing. Nothing but a hard metal floor to play on and over fifty cameras scrutinizing their every move. It is the game in its purest form."

Twenty nine cameras throughout the Room will follow every play, and each player will be fitted with a small helmet-cam inside their face cage to provide red-button fanatics at home a chance to see everything their favourite player does.

"It's something else entirely. It's like walking into the set of a science fiction film." Told Harold Hilgar, the man who'll be playing right tackle and defensive end for the new Rennidanian team, proudly dubbed 'the Brawlers', something of a throwback to their international gridiron counterparts, the Brutes. And that's not the only similarity between the two.

Dana Graw's younger brother, Jose Graw, will be starting in the #1 jersey as the Brawlers red hot quarterback. We caught ten minutes of their training this morning, and Jose's playing style matched his brothers perfectly, a combination of explosive short passes and running the ball with his own raw power to get the first down.

Needless to say, we here at RWN are excited to see what will come of this secretive attempt to infiltrate the Arena gridiron world. Early indicators look positive, but only time will tell if the Brawlers will be a success.

Everything is the same, except everything is different.

That was the thought of event organisers of the first NS Arena Bowl. Many of them were also in place for the predecessor tournament, the Sarzonian Indoor Gridball Cup, which the Sarzonian indoor gridball league's officials hoped would generate at least a little bit of interest.

Fortunately for them, the event generated enough interest to support the formation of the indoor league, which basked in the glow of a successful inaugural season. The crowds weren't as large as they were for the SIGC, but they were definitely large enough for the league to justify its 10-match regular season schedule and its playoff structure.

Now, the question would be whether the crowds were merely curious onlookers or the harbinger of the league establishing a more permanent foothold on the Sarzonian sporting scene. Unlike the SIGC, which featured every game being played in Sarzonia, most of the NS Arena Bowl matches would be in front of foreign crowds. Secondly, unlike the four-match group stage of the SIGC, which is now being called NS Arena Bowl 0, this group stage will feature eight matches.

"It's going to separate the good teams from the not so good ones more quickly," said Stars quarterback Chris Painter. "You have a little more room for error than you did last time out."

However, that won't change the approach Stars coach Brad Abernathy will take to the tournament.

"We've seen how quickly things can change from one match to another," Abernathy said. "We need to be ready to go each time out."

The media coverage from foreign entities has been a pleasant surprise for event organisers. Abernathy said his players were "estatic" that the same number of teams are competing in NS Arena Bowl I as competed in Arena Bowl 0, even though some of the countries who competed no longer exist.

"That shows you there's some traction for this tournament," he said. "Granted, not every nation who's not here has stopped existing, but we're optimistic about our chances of success here."

Time will tell if that optimism will hold up, but if Xander Ryan is any indication, the Stars won't stop working to make sure that happens. The Sarzonian place kicker was reportedly at the team's practice facility across from The Palestra trying field goals from all over the pitch.

"The goalposts in this game are much narrower than the outdoor game's," Ryan said. "It's all a matter of getting used to having to make kicks into a 9-foot-6 opening as opposed to an 18-foot-6 opening."

Sky Dragons Struggle In Opener

Jais-Irjin K’baryth had every opportunity to show the World exactly what a world class “real” grid ball quarterback could do in the pass oriented Arena Bowl competition. And he did just that against a very hungry team from Cosumar. He struggled.

Grid ball isn’t just grid ball. The arena game seems to be nothing more than a wide open score fest to which the best QB will be named MVP. And that may be the case, BUT this Arena game also plays at a much faster pace. Defensive backs KNOW you are going to be throwing the ball on most downs and prepare accordingly. Recievers have half the space to make their moves and get open - that means they have to be very quick about it. The timing of the routes is completely different in the arena game. Add to that just forty-five minutes of practice for K’baryth to realize these facts and develop some chemistry with the new team surrounding him. To say it was ugly doesn’t do it justice.

1-14 for 7 yards and 1 rush for -3 yards plus a fumble and a pick. Those were the stats of the great K’baryth in the first quarter as Cosumar flew out to an early 21-0 lead. And the second wasn’t much better for the griball star QB who managed to finally connect with receivers a bit as he went 7-16 for 92 yards and TD pass to Mefojo As'ess'augh near the half. But Cosumar led now 30-7.

Then the QB went to work and the defense stepped up as the third quarter got underway. 3 passes for 74 yards and a TD again to As’sess’augh. INT. 5 for 7 TD to Tizyj Pol'inao. And a 63 yard punt returned for TD by Namubo Quar'e brought the score closer at now 33-28. But that was as close as the Sky Dragons would get.

Two early 4th quarter TD’s from Cosumar unraveled the comeback as ASMV would score on a 58 yard scamper from Reloen Asheyph'nt and a 83 yard bomb to Alauqu U'quache but fail on both two-point conversion attempts. The resulting 47-41 score belonged to Cosumar.

“We overlooked them,” said Sobekonii Etaik'v following the gsme. We have to do much better against Qazox if we want a chance to win this tourney. Qazox destroyed the Aces of Krytenia today and will be a solid force in our match on our next match day.

Even though indoor gridball is not a sport that lends itself to defensive plays, the failure of Sarzonia's defence to stop Sibirsky late left coach Brad Abernathy fuming.

The Stars lost their NS Arena Bowl I opener to Sibirsky at The Palestra 51-43 after Capitalizt quarterback Huba Donka hit Jason Marks for the match-winning touchdown pass with 1:35 remaining. It was Donka's fifth touchdown pass.

"We just weren't able to make the plays we needed to on either side of the ball," Abernathy said afterward. "Offensively, we didn't give Chris [Painter, Sarzonia's quarterback] enough space to throw the ball downfield the way we wanted to." Painter threw four touchdown passes, but his interception in the end zone just before the one-minute warning prevented the Stars from drawing level and possibly forcing overtime.

"I just have to do a better job of completing passes," a downcast Painter said. "I tried to force that ball to [wide receiver/defensive back Chris] Jackson and their guy was able to read me and pick off the ball."

Sarzonia (0-1) tried running the ball, but with little effect. The Stars rushed eight times for seven yards and Painter was dodging Capitalizt blitzes most of the night. The Capitalizt sacked Painter five times in 54 dropbacks. He completed 27-of-49 passes for 271 yards.

The Stars will be playing in Catherina tonight against Delaclava, but some of the supporters who would otherwise be traveling to watch that match will be a few metres down the way at the Delclava National Athletic Complex. The indoor gridball Stars will be the undercard for the outdoor teams, which will be playing in the World Bowl XI final at Golden Grass Stadium.

"It's not an ideal situation for us," said wide receiver/defensive back Lyle Tunney. "To tell you the truth, a lot of us would rather be at Golden Grass Stadium watching the World Bowl final." Event organisers rejected a request from Abernathy to move the match to The Palestra in exchange for changing the Matchday 7 fixture to a match in Catherina.

"It wouldn't be fair to the fans who bought tickets," said an Arena Bowl staffer who asked not to be identified because he was not authorised to speak on behalf of the organisation. "And we wouldn't want to create a situation where we just moved matches at whim. Even if it is Delaclava we're talking about."

Last minute heroics from Kemper lift Raiders over Stannge; 34-28
Churchma Sports Inc.

"That touchdown pass couldn't have happened one second earlier or later, or on any other part of the field. It had to happen then," star quarterback Ryan Kemper said. Kemper was dead on with that statement. With 57 seconds left on the clock, Kemper hit Mario Towns on a 37-yard scoring strike between a Stannge cornerback and safety.

Kemper finished the day with four touchdown passes, while he was picked off on the first drive of the game. Towns had two receiving touchdowns, totaling 145 yards receiving on the day.

"Ryan (Kemper) and Mario (Towns) showed up for us today. Those kinds of players that have big game experience had to do that for us. Stannge put up a good fight, but our older guys showed that experience beats talent any day," head coach Mel Dudley said.

The first win of the NSAB 1 moves the Raiders to 1-0. Next up is Western Cuba, who just came off of a heartbreaker against Wadomia where the Cubans gave up 20 points in the fourth quarter to lose the game. "This is going to be a really exciting game for everyone involved, because WC is coming off of a tough loss- so they will feel like they have something to prove, and this is our first home game of the tournament. The crowd is going to be rocking next week," said a very excited coach Dudley.
