The fourth Gordonopia Premier League season has kicked off, and the first leg is now complete. Taking a step back, it becomes apparent that there have been some huge shocks, and some stark contrasts to years past.

At the top of the table is Teva FC, a team that may have finally found its groove. After remaining a mid-major team for the past few seasons, Teva's squad, which is notable for its heavy use of foreign players, has shown itself to be more than worthy of its current spot. Although it is behind previous first-leg leaders, the team's 7-0-3 record is nonetheless impressive. As expected, the team's success has been derived from its offensive strength. The Anchors are tied for the lead in goals scored, and huge wins such as their 4-1 victory over the Kjeldor Knights and their 5-2 rout of current second placed Kaje football shows their ability to put up big numbers. The team is led by its strikers, Astograth-native Itzaina Erreka and Saugeais national Gerard Kuchler, but the entirety of the team has shown a strong performance.

The rest of the top-flight is composed of predictable contenders, as well as a few newcomers. Kaje Football and FC Deska are separated in second and third by goal differential, each with a 5-3-2 record. Both squads have faced their annual issues, which appear to be keeping them out of the lead; Kaje Football facing high goals-against numbers and the Northern Wall facing difficulties scoring. Of note, though, is the fact that Deska's new goalie, Jay Neuman, has succeeded in holding up the pressure of replacing Ludwig Strauss. Deska is currently tied for second in goals against and has put up five goals shutouts so far.

The leaders are joined by West Tolten in the fifth spot, but the fourth and sixth spots are held by relative outsiders. Reinheim Metro, which finished in 10th during its first GPL season in 2014, has managed the lowest goals against in the league, although it has faced some difficulties on the offensive end. Basin Plain, meanwhile, is in fourth after receiving promotion to the league this year. The team was predicted to be a contender, after putting in strong performances in the Series B Championship Cup two years running, and has managed to stay behind Deska and Kaje by only a single point with a game in hand.

The biggest surprise so far has been the abysmal performance of Gordonopia FC, which was predicted to take the second place spot before the season started. In what is being described as a nightmare season, the squad is in 15th place by goal differential, and has been utterly anemic when it comes to goals. Although the squad has managed a respectable 16 goals for over 10 games, it has allowed 21, second worst int he league.

Another note is the even worse performance of GFC's cross-town rival: FC Gordonopia City. The squad has put up the worst ever performance for the first leg, with a -13 goal differential and a 0-2-7 record. The squad is the only team to fail to win a match in the first leg, and its only two points have come from a pair of draws. Matches like the 5-1 clobbering against West Tolten and a 5-2 loss against Latimere United have characterized the season, and the squad has so far failed to find a combination of players that can put up competition against the rest of the league.

The player awards have had few clear leaders so far. For the Golden Boot, Astograth's Itzaina Erreka of Teva FC and Vonn Keller of Kaje Football have each managed half a dozen goals, with one and two assists respectively. Meanwhile, Kaje's Galdinho has managed five assists and three goals, while Norm Bates of West Tolten looks to repeat his boot win last year with six assists and a goal. The Golden Glove, meanwhile, is currently led by Jonathon Stock of Reinheim Metro, who has is the only goalie still in single digit goals with nine against, and with ten goals against Jay Neuman of FC Deska, and Jonathon Hughes of Union Holiday. The latter's own performance, though, has failed to lift his team out of the 16th spot in the table, mainly due to its nine goals scored; tied for last in the league.

There are still 24 matchdays remaining remaining, but the race for the post-season, as well as the lucrative Champions' Cup spot that now comes with topping the season table, is already well underway.

Another leg has passed, and the GPL race continues to remain tight. Although there have been notable changes in the standings, many teams remain playing at the level they did for the first leg.

Teva FC has fallen behind West Tolten by a single point. West Tolten rose from fifth to first mainly on the back of a prodigious number of goals, averaging three goals per game over the last ten matches. This has included some huge scorelines, such as a hectic 6-5 victory over Reinheim Metro, a 6-3 match against Fusba United, and a 5-2 victory over FC Deska. Notable is the fact that 11 of those 30 goals came against the two strongest defenses in the league, Deska and Reinheim, which have averaged a single goal per game thus far. At this rate, West is set to surpass its own record-setting 78 goals from 2014; the team scored 49 at this same point last season, and has 50 this year.

The second place spot is narrowly held by Teva FC, which edges out FC Deska by a goal difference of four. Although it has not performed quite as well as it did during the first leg, suffering the 'leaders curse' that has plagued the first-leg leader every season thus far, it has still managed a respectable 5-1-3 record. Deska, meanwhile, owes its position to its typically rock-solid defense. The Northern Wall has allowed only 19 goals this season; several more than at the same point last year but still good enough to hold the lowest goals against.

Interestingly, the next-best defensive team is cross-town rival Reinheim Metrom, which currently sits in 7th place with 20 goals against and a game in hand. This only serves to cement Greater Deska as the capitol for Gordonopian defensive football, and as the Kjeldor Knights fall further every season and Union Holiday continues to sit in the middle of the pack, the two Deskan teams may vie at the end for the title of best defensive club.

The largest movements this leg have been by Union Holiday and the Kjeldor Knights, who practically swapped places on the table. Union managed to rise from 16th to 12th, riding a 4-3-3 leg and a solid defense. At the same time, the Kjeldor Knights fell from the ninth spot to sixteenth thanks to an abysmal goal scoring record and continual player injuries. The only other move of note is Basin Plains' fall from fourth to ninth since the end of the first leg.

Several players are beginning to distance themselves from the pack for the player awards. Norm Bates is making a decent case for a repeat Golden Boot, as he sits with 11 assists and five goals. Itzaina Erreka and Vonn Keller look to be the most promising strikers. The former currently has 12 goals and three assists, while the latter has 15 goals and two assists. Gordon Brink of Latimere United, winner in 2013, also seems to be bubbling under, with nine goals and four assists.

The Golden Glove continues to be a three way race between Jay Neuman of Deska, Jonathon Stock of Reinheim, and Jonathon Hughes of Union, with Neuman holding a slight lead. If Neuman wins it, it would be Deska's third golden glove in four years, while Union and Reinheim have yet to earn one, though the latter has come bitterly close on multiple occasions.

Heading into the final four games, there have been some big shakeups at the top of the GPL.

Hanging onto the lead they gained in week 22 is FC Deska, with a respectable 16-6-6 record. Deska leap-frogged both West Tolten and Teva FC, and currently holds a four point lead over the former. What makes the lead exciting is the fact that topping the table would give Deska its third GPL season victory in four GPL seasons. Although most of the movement took place during the first half of the leg, a bye should give the team a break going into its final four matches. The biggest factor in the ascent is Deska's defense, which allowed only six goals in nine games and 25 this season. The next closest is Reinheim Metro, which has allowed 30 goals so far.

Pulling into the next few spots are West Tolten, Kaje Football, and Reichsburg FC. West holds the second spot with 50 points, while Kaje and Reichsburg are a win back. The first two squads owe their success to their prodigious offense, which both have scored at least 60 goals, while Reichsburg has found success with a balanced style of play combining strong offense and a respectable defense. Four points back, West has the best chance of taking the lead, though the other two are theoretically in competition.

Teva FC has fallen from first after the opening leg to second after the second, to sixth. After going 2-2-6 during the leg, Teva seems to be slumping at the wrong time. Although it may be able to hold onto a Gordonopia Cup spot, the team is virtually out of contention for the lead.

Four teams are currently in the most danger of relegation. FC Gordonopia City occupies the lowest spot as it has for the whole season. It may be possible for the team to escape the automatic relegation slot, though it will be a tough battle. Fusba United currently occupies the play-in spot, and appears to be in big danger of keeping it. The team is one win out of the relegation zone, while it also has one fewer game to play than surrounding teams. The Kjeldor Knights and Willingham AC each have 31 points, and occupy the 15th and 14th slots.

The individual player awards have become even clearer going into the final leg. For the Golden Boot, Vonn Keller of Kaje Football and Gordon Brink of Latimere United seem to have the strongest cases. Keller has scored 23 goals so far, the highest in the league, and has a further four assists. Brink, the winner in 2013, has 17 goals and eight assists.

The race for the Golden Glove is now virtually a one-horse race. Jay Neuman of FC Deska holds a five goal advantage over any other keeper. It would take a collapse of the Deska defense for the squad to miss the award at this point, meaning Neuman's destiny is in his own hands. Should he hold out until the end, Deska would win its third Golden Glove.

The 2015 GPL Regular Season has concluded, and for the third time in the league's four years, FC Deska finds itself at the top of the table.

In the most convincing lead in league history, the Northern Wall finished with a 19-6-7 record, and 63 points. Unlike in previous seasons, the spot did not come to a thrilling conclusion on the final matchday; rather, Deska finished with not only the highest point total for a season winner, but also a the largest lead, with seven points over the second-placed squad. The greatest contributor to the victory was Deska's defense, which allowed 30 goals the entire season; 11 higher than their unbelievable record-setting season last year, but still five better than any other team. For the first time, Deska's victory comes attached to a Champions' Cup slot, rather than a Globe Cup allocation, thanks to Gordonopia's promotion to a top-28 association.

The remainder of the Gordonopia Cup qualifiers contained few surprises. Kaje Football, the only other squad to win the regular season, took second, while Reichsburg FC took its predicted third placed finish. West Tolten, Plains, Teva FC and Latimere United were also unsurprising qualifiers, though Reinheim Metro, in 7th place, was an outsider going into its second GPL season.

FC Gordonopia City found itself mired in the automatic relegation spot that it was stuck in the entire season. The squad, which earned 26 points this season, gave the worst GPL performance in history, and even failed to win a match in its first 10 fixtures. It will be replaced by Riverside Works, the victor of the Inter-League Cup, while the Kjeldor Knights, in 16th place by goal differential, will face Harbor Football in a playoff for entry into the league next year.

Golden Boot - Vonn Keller, 25, Kaje Football - After close disappointments for the last two seasons, Vonn Keller has been awarded the Golden Boot by the vote of Gordonopia's leading sports journalists, GPL coaches, and a variety of league officials. Keller scored a convincing 27 goals throughout the season, the highest in the league, and also racked up six assists. Keller is the forward member of Kaje Football's 'dynamic duo', where he teams up with AM Galdinho to create an offensive juggernaut. Keller's huge goal count contributed to Kaje's league-high 72 goals, and he made the difference in a number of games. This huge win will certainly help his case to remain on the starting lineup of the national team, where he currently has six goals over 14 caps.

Golden Glove -Jay Neuman, 20, FC Deska - The Northern Wall's rookie starting keeper has brought the team its third Golden Glove in the league's four years. Relatively unknown at the start of the season, Neuman ultimately proved himself more than capable of filling the shoes of the legendary Ludwig Strauss. Neuman allowed only 30 goals during the season; five lower than any other starting keeper. With such a strong, young keeper on its roster, most will not be surprised if Deska continues to rack up the silverware.

Inter-League Cup

At the same time as FC Deska was sweeping away the GPL competition, the fourth Inter-League Cup was taking place. The cup determines the promotions to the GPL, as well as the Gordonopia Football Federation's four entrants to the Series B Championship Cup.

The diverse nature of the cup, which takes the eight winners of Gordonopia's regional leagues, led to a number of fascinating matches between a wide variety of teams. Several squads were regulars in the tournament, such as Riverside Works, while others had yet to make an Inter-League appearance. One squad, Tolven, had played in the GPL before, while two others had participated in the SBCC.

Ultimately, the final round came down to the Inter-League Cup's two biggest veterans: Riverside and Harbor Football. The teams were coming off a pair of extra-time semifinals, and both seemed ready for the big match. In the end, the Tolten-based Riverside Works managed to upstage the Tevan Harbor Football in an exciting 1-0 game.

Riverside Works will take the place of FC Gordonopia City in the GPL, while Harbor Football will play the Kjeldor Knights for a spot in the GPL next year.

Gordonopia Premier League
Gordonopia Cup 2015 First Round

The 2015 Gordonopia Cup is underway, and what an exciting first round it has been. Four intense matches have been played, and now four teams remain to advance to the semi-finals: FC Deska, West Tolte, Teva FC, and Kaje Football.

The opening match took place at Das Lager (the camp) in Reichsburg, where FC Deska and Latimere United faced off in a thrilling fixture. FC Deska came into the match heavily favored to win, having smashed the competition in the regular season. The team was not only the first team to top the league table two years in a row, but it is also seeking to become the first squad to repeat for the Gordonopia Cup. Latimere United, the winners of the 2013 Gordonopia Cup, came off a decent season, but were 16 points behind Deska over the 32 matches. All of this made it an even bigger thriller when Latimere truly gave the Northern Wall a run for its money. Deska opened up the board with a goal by striker Martin Mallorn in the 21nd minute, but for the remainder of the game was unable to capitalize on chances and counters. Latimere, meanwhile, slowly gained momentum, which came to a peak in the final ten minutes. Finally, with the United supporters on their ecstatic on their feet, star Latimere striker Gordon Brink managed to tip the ball past Golden Glove goalie Jay Neuman in the 89th minute, ultimately sending the match into extra time. Latimere seemed to come out quick, the goal seeming to boost them, but as Deska's crushing defense succeeded in shutting them down, the tide shifted. Deska attacking middy Heike Kranz managed to dribble around a pair of Latimere defenders, and ultimately scored the game winning goal in the 113th minute.

West Tolten and Plains faced off next at Iron Harbor Stadium in Teva. Plains started the match with an uncharacteristic aggressiveness, something that seemed to catch West off guard, and early on seemed to have the advantage. In the 18th minute, the attacks finally produced results as defender Luca Krämer managed to head the ball into West's net. Rather than press the advantage, though, Plains seemed to lose its edge, just as Deska had done in the previous match early on. Unlike Deska, though, Plains didn't have the league's top defense to keep them in the match. A 35th minute goal by West's captain, attacking midfielder Norm Bates, and a Bate's assisted strike by Hugh Lawrence in the 71st minute, where all that was required to put West into the semi-finals. West will face off against FC Deska at Oceanview Park in Bahar.

The third match was played between Reichsburg FC and Teva FC at the Peak Dome in Deska. Teva opened up the scoring with a long shot by Saugeais striker Gerard Kuchler in the 31st minute. The shot didn't go unanswered, though, and Reichsburg striker David Ramsey managed a header off of a set piece in the 37th minute to tie the game. Both teams played back and forth for the rest of the half, before the short break. After the half, though, the game was all Teva. A second goal by Ramsey in the 61st minute was followed up by a powerful strike from midfielder Dennis Key in the 72nd, and for the last 20 minutes, Teva played defensive football. Although it had several decent chances, Reichsburg ultimately failed to score again, giving Teva the first upset of the day with their 3-1 victory.

The final Gordonopia Cup match also proved to be the most lopsided affair. Kaje Football took on Reinheim Metro in the at IGC Arena in Gordonopia City. Although Reinheim's defense has proven to be its strongest asset this year, Kaje seemed to brush it aside with no struggle. Goals by three different players, Golden Boot winner Vonn Keller, attacking midfielder Galdinho, and defender Roy Jeffries, in the 7th, 28th and 71st minutes respectively gave Kaje a 3-0 shutout, and its biggest Gordonopia Cup win ever. Kaje will now face off against Teva FC at Islands Field in Latimere.

In addition to the Gordonopia Cup games, the Kjeldor Knights also took on Harbor Football in a relegation-promotion playoff between the GPL's 16th placed team and the runner-up of the Inter-League Cup. Harbor Football came out strong, scoring the first two goals, only to have Kjeldor equalize. A third Kjeldor goal put the oft-battered team in the lead, but Harbor reversed this with a pair of goals in the final twenty minutes. Ultimately, Harbor won 4-3 to earn its first season in the GPL, where it will play alongside fellow promotion Riverside Works. Kjeldor will be relegated to the Inter-Territorial League.

Gordonopia Premier League
Gordonopia Cup 2015 Semi-Finals

In the territories of Bahar and Latimere, the two 2015 Gordonopia Cup Semifinals are now over. Two of the nation's top teams have advanced to play in the final round, while two more were narrowly defeated and will play for the third place spot.

The first match took place between FC Deska and West Tolten at Oceanview Park in Bahar. A clash of offensive and defensive titans; The Machine against The Northern Wall. Although Deska entered as the favorite, the match could have easily gone either way.

The match begin with West controlling the ball, but failing to penetrate Deska's rock solid defense. West had a number of early chances, including a powerful strike by Norm Bates that was narrowly saved by Deska's Jay Neuman, but ultimately it was of no avail. For virtually the entire first half, West attempted to penetrate Deska's defense, only to be shut out and faced with a minor counter. By the second half, though, Deska's strategy was apparent.

The constant attacks seemed to be wearing out West's forward players, and past the 50th minute, offensivemen such as Bates and striker Lawrence began losing out in what should have been easy races to the ball. Meanwhile, Deska began to pick up the pace on the offense, and slowly began moving its men forward. It appears that Deska's strategy was to put all of their effort into defense to wear West's storming down, and then strike at The Machine's vulnerable defense. Against such a powerful attacking team, such a strategy would surely be risky, but if any team were to successfully pull it off, it would be Deska.

And succeed Deska did. The big breakthrough came in the 73rd minute when attacking midfielder Heike Kranz received the ball off a throw in and, without letting it touch the ground, knocked it into the goal. After such a long battle of attrition, the Deska fans erupted, and the side could barely contain its excitement. West attempted to make a comeback, and came close on several occasions, but at that point, the game was virtually over. When the final whistle blew with Deska up 1-0, everyone, from the stadium to those watching the game, could feel that Deska was on the verge of becoming the first team to repeat in the Gordonopia Cup.

The second semi-final match took place at Islands Field in Latimere between Teva FC and Kaje Football, and was just as tight as the first. Kaje came out strong, with Golden Glove winner Vonn Keller and AM Galdinho leading the charge. With a strong amount of momentum backing up the powerful offense, it was only a matter of time before something went in. That something came in the 17th minute, when Keller gave up the ball to Galdinho, whose bicycle kick hammered it into the net.

Coming off of the goal, Kaje had several more chances, including a strike from Keller that narrowly flew over the crossbar. None of them came to anything, though, and the two teams headed to the locker rooms with Kaje up one to nothing. When they came back, though, Teva seemed to have found a spark. After moving the ball into the box several times, forward Itzaina Erreka finally received the ball in the 68th minute from midfielder Dennis Key, and proceeded to shoot it past Kaje's keeper. The ball was called offsides, though, much to the ire of Teva's fans. Close video examination proved indecisive play continued, but after that point Kaje seemed to regain control. Teva had one last major chance when Key shot from inside the box, only to have the ball deflected by fellow Falconwhereveryouare national teammate Darry Kouzmanoff.

In the end, the score remained at 1-0, and Kaje emerged victorious. The trip will be Kaje's third to the finals, where it will face FC Deska at Empire Stadium. Teva FC and West Tolten will face off at Deska's Peak Dome for third place.

Gordonopia Cup Semi-Finals
FC Deska 1–0 West Tolten
Teva FC 0–1 Kaje Football

Gordonopia Premier League
Gordonopia Cup 2015 Finals

A frenzied clash of titans has produced the crown victor of Gordonopian Football: Kaje Football has emerged victorious in the Gordonopia Cup Final.

Perhaps even more anticipated than last year's unforgettable final, the battle between Kaje and regular-season winner FC Deska had the nation on the edge of its seat. The teams have clashed eight times during the GPL-era, and neither has a decisive advantage. Deska came away with three wins against Kaje in the regular season, where the team has thrived the most, while Kaje has defeated the Northern Wall only once in the regular season, but in both of their Gordonopia Cup encounters. To make matters even more heated, Deska and Kaje are the first and second most successful teams respectively during the GPL's four years, and any meeting between the two is sure to produce a game to remember. The fact that Deska's Jay Neuman came away with this year's Golden Glove, while Kaje's Vonn Keller earned the Golden Boot, only serves as icing on the cake.

Before the match even started, millions were in attendance at pre-game rallies in the host-city of Gordonopia City, Deska, and Bahar, the home of Kaje. A number of businesses, including IGC's Deska and Bahar operations, gave employees days off to celebrate the game. The stadium itself met last year's attendance record of 160,000, thanks to a number of seating areas being converted to standing room. Nationwide, it is estimated that 50.1% of Gordonopians watched the entirety of the broadcast, the second-highest number in history after the coronation of Emperor Raleigh VII, while three-quarters of the nation watched at least a portion live.

Although the Emperor was forced to miss the match, the Imperial Symphony Orchestra and Choir performed the Imperial Anthem before the match itself began.

Almost immediately, it was apparent that that match would be the epitome of a slugfest. Although it started somewhat more aggressively than it did in its win over West Tolten, Deska started off with its defense solid as a rock. Meanwhile, Kaje came out in a fury, utilizing every aspect of its formidable offense. For a brief part of the match, it seemed as if the game, perhaps, could be a repeat of 2014's scoreless regular time. However, it was Deska that struck first and ended any notion.

In the 13th minute, Deska's powerful triangle, composed of back Roger Steiner and defensive midfielders James Stahl and Lane Franz, managed to shut down a drive by their Kaje counterpart, the 'dynamic duo' of striker Vonn Keller and attacking midfielder Galdinho. Immediately, Franz, who had recovered the ball, began a counter, and passed the ball up field to AM Heike Kranz, who in turn got the ball into the feet of Deska's lone striker, Martin Mallorn. Mallorn managed to evade defender Joe Long, which in turn left him with only the goalie, Jacob Bruhn, between him and the goal. With such good odds, the talented young Mallorn hammered a shot into the top right corner, and put Deska onto the board.

The celebration didn't lats long, though. Only seven minutes later, Galdinho found himself in the box off of a pass from midfielder Stephen Foch. Rather than attempt a cross, the former Erathi national turned naturalized Gordonopian took a narrow shot between two defenders, catching Jay Neuman off guard. With the score even, the Kaje fans erupted, and the momentum carried. Five minutes later, Keller found himself in a similar situation and, after dodging away from defender Brandt Watts, took a shot that narrowly slipped under the cross-bar, just over the fingers of Neuman.

Now up 2-1, Kaje seemed in their element. Rather than back off, Kaje pressed the attack, while Deska's only close counter was shut down thanks to a deflection by DM Darry Kouzmanoff. In the closing minutes of the half, Galdinho received the ball at midfield, where he managed a barely-onsides pass to Keller. After evading both defenders marking him, Keller stormed like lightning up the pitch, and without hesitation, took a close shot on goal. At 42 minutes, Kaje was ahead 3-1.

After the half, Deska appeared to be revitalized. Several early attacks resulted in near misses, and it appeared that a breakthrough was imminent. Ultimately, this came when Mallorn was brought down in the box by defender Joe Long during the 56th minute. The resulting penalty kick was good, and gave Deska hopes of a comeback.

Unfortunately for them, this never came to pass. In the 71st minute, Keller managed a stunning header after a massive leap on a corner kick, and the resulting goal put Kaje up 4-2. Despite Deska's best efforts, including a second penalty which was blocked and a pair of deflections off the bar, the Wall was unable to recover.

When the final whistle blew after four minutes of stoppage, Kaje claimed its second Gordonopia Cup. The pitch was stormed by celebrating fans, and in the virtual chaos, Vonn Keller was awarded Man of the Match in no small part to his stunning hat trick, and Keller accepted the Cup along with head coach Robert Cain from the league commissioner.

Just before the championship match, the third place math between West Tolten and Teva FC concluded at Deska's Peak Dome. A pair of goals for the machine from Norm Bates in the 35th minute and Charles DeLaney in the 83rd minute gave West the win over Teva, whose lone goal came from Itzaina Erreka in the 61st minute.

Third Place Match
West Tolten 2–1 Teva FC

FC Deska 2–4 Kaje Football

The fifth GPL Season has passed, and to the surprise of few, Kaje Football has won its second regular season.

The final result was nearly a flip of last year, as Kaje earned 62 points to second place FC Deska's 56. Last year, Deska had 63, compared to Kaje's 56. Since the beginning of the league, the two teams have emerged as the dominant powerhouses in the league, between them winning every regular season, and all but one Gordonopia Cup. Both squads have become the dominant evangelizers of two very different styles of play. Deska's crushing defense has led to the squad winning golden glove after golden glove, while Kaje's offense has helped the team bring in the goals, earning an incredible record of 83 goals this season. Once again, the two squads also earned the two main player awards. Will these two teams dominance continue for years to come?

The other Gordonopia Cup qualifiers were made up of mostly familiar faces. Reinheim Metro, Teva FC, Reichsburg FC and Latimere United all return from last year, while Willingham AC returns from a year's absence. A notable newcomer, though, was Riverside Works, the fifth placed team on the table. Riverside earned promotion to the league this year, and this finish makes it the highest performing newcomer ever.

In contrast, Fusba United finds itself with not only an automatic relegation, but also the infamous title of worst GPL squad in history. The team managed an abysmal 4-7-21 record, and failed to even win a match until matchday 14. The 19 point performance is seven less than last year's loser. The team's -34 goal differential certainly had a role to play. This descent is a sad state of affairs for a team that was one of the 'founding five' of the old Gordonopia Football Association. The team managed to qualify for the Gordonopia Cup during the first two GPL seasons, but in 2014 and 2015, it finished in 15th place, one spot outside of potential relegation. Many longtime fans of the sport likely hope that this is only a temporary departure for this legendary team. Bellum Neu will also play the runner-up of the Inter-League Cup for a spot in next year's GPL.

Player Awards

Golden Boot - Rhode Arthur, 23, Riverside Works - In somewhat of an upset, Riverside Works striker Rhode Arthur has won the Golden Boot in his squad's inaugural season. Arthur was promoted to the GPL with his squad, where he had been for a year following graduation from Imperial University. Arthur had won the Golden Boot in his former regional league, and his entrance into the GPL was hotly anticipated. No one expected the 23 year old to lead his squad to the second highest goals scored of all time, though, and Arthur was a major factor in Riverside's phenomenal season. With 26 goals scored in the season, along with 9 assists, Rhode managed to edge out virtually the entire Kaje offense, which occupied the 2nd, 3rd, and 8th spots for goals scored with Vonn Keller, Jere Tobias, and Galdinho.

Golden Glove -Jay Neuman, 21, FC Deska - In contrast to the Golden Boot, Jay Neuman earned the Golden Glove with no competition to speak of. For the second season in a row, he anchored FC Deska's formidable defensive line to the lowest goals against in the league, bettering last year's mark with only 28 goals against. The next closest team, crosstown rival Reinheim Metro, allowed 39 goals past keeper Jonathon Stock. It was Neuman and the rest of the wall that made up for Deska's virtually non-existent offense, and helped push the team into the second spot.

Newcomer of the Year - Rhode Arthur, 23, Riverside Works

Foreigner of the Year - Gerard Kuchler (Saugeais), 22, Teva FC

Gordonopia Premier League
Gordonopia Cup 2016 First Round and Semi Finals
5 Year Anniversary

It's been a whirlwind of a cup so far, but the Championship Match is just over the horizon. The regular season's eight best teams started in first round, with the winners progressing to the semi-finals. Now, we are down to two teams, but what led to this point?

The opening match was played at Oceanview Park in Bahar between Kaje Football and Latimere United. For the first time in cup history, the higher seed has been given the home match, rather than being placed at a neutral site for the first round only. The two bitter territorial rivals battled it out in a match that certainly kept fans of both sides on the edges of their seats. Eighth seed LatU managed to keep the defending champs and regular season winners scoreless for the entirety of the 90 minutes, although they couldn't put one through on their own. It wasn't until the 107th minute that Vonn Keller managed to one-touch an incredible cross by Galdinho for a stunning goal that ultimately won the game.

Teva FC and GPL newcomer Riverside Works met at Iron Harbor Stadium in Teva for game two. Teva managed to gain the upper hand initially off of a penalty kick from Astograth international Itzaina Erreka in the 21st minute, but it was short-lived. After building up for the beginning of the game, it seemed that the beast awakened in Golden Boot winner Rhode Arthur, as the young striker led Riverside to victory by way of a hat trick. In doing so, he gave his Tolten-based team its first playoff victory, and an upset in the process.

Reinheim Metro hosted Reichsburg FC at Celeron Field in Reinheim for the first of two matches in the Deska metro area. Reichsburg came out characteristically strong, led by national team striker David Ramsey, who opened scoring for the team in the 13th minute when he managed to fake out the normally spot-on Jonathon Stock. From there, the match devolved into a war of attrition, and Ramsey's goal turned out to be the difference maker as neither team scored again.

FC Deska dueled Willingham AC at the Peak Dome in Deska to cap off the first round. As expected, it was Deska's defense that primarily won the day, shutting down virtually every advance Willingham made. A goal off of a counter by Colin North was the only point the Northern Wall put on the board, but it was all they needed to move on.

To open the semi-finals, Kaje Football met Riverside Works at IGC Arena in Gordonopia City. Seeming to shake off its shaky performance in the first round Kaje came out with a fury and, unfortunately for the underdog Riverside, could not be stopped. Goals in the 23rd minute from Tobias, the 37th from Keller and the 78th from Galdinho put Kaje at three and nil, and Riverside was unable to respond.

Reichsburg FC played FC Deska at Plains Stadium to determine who would face Kaje, and the final result was nearly as decisive as the last match. FC Deska came out with uncharacteristic offensive strength, putting up two goals in the first half from North and midfielder Lucas Osborne. A wild deflection by Reichsburg's Jonathon Spalding in the 44th minute, though, brought the game back into striking distance. It did not stay that way though, as the Wall seemed to shake off the wound quickly when Heike Kranz scored a third Deska goal in the 51st minute. From there, Deska mostly played its typical defensive game, and in the end, emerged victorious.

With Deska and Kaje moving on, it seems fitting that the fifth anniversary should be a rematch between the GPL's dominant teams. Both squads will have something to prove going into the championship, but only one will emerge victorious. Can Deska decisively say that it has been the best team of the league's formative years? Or will Kaje throw itself into the equation by winning a third Gordonopia Cup to tie Deska's achievement in the regular season? Only time will tell.

First Round
Kaje Football 0–0 Latimere United (1–0 AET)
Teva FC 1–3 Riverside Works
Reinheim Metro 0–1 Reichsburg FC
FC Deska 1–0 Willingham AC

Semi-Finals
Kaje Football 3–0 Riverside Works
Reichsburg FC 1–3 FC Deska

Inter League Cup

The Inter-League Cup has also come to a close, marking the fifth time the winners of the eight regional leagues have met in a knockout competition. The teams and results were as diverse as ever, but in the end, they would be narrowed down to a pair of teams with the chance to play for the GPL.

Two teams in the tournament, FC Gordonopia City and Tolven, were former GPL teams seeking to make their return to the league, while another, Sporting Fusba, hoped to prevent its city from being the largest metro area without a GPL team following the relegation of Fusba this season. Other contenders ranged from Football Renning, a small club on the outskirts of Teva who managed a phenomenal season in their league, to Tahi AC, a perennial contender in the Colonial League.

In the end, Tolven and FC Gordonopia City emerged to play each other in the final match. Tolven, hailing from the Northern Mountains League, ultimately defeated its Capitol League challenger. The victory earned Tolven an automatic berth in the GPL, replacing Fusba United, where it will play for the first time since the inaugural season.

FC Gordonopia City did not lose hope, though, as they played against Bellum Neu for a spot next year. In the end, though, Bellum's home field advantage helped lift it to a narrow, penalty-kick victory, and at least another year in the top flight.

First Round
Sporting Fusba 4–1 Football Renning
FC Gordonopia City 2–0 Metro Center
Tolven 4–2 Tahi AC
Whitworth Provincial 3–1 FC Kjiel

Semi-Finals
Sporting Fusba 1–4 FC Gordonopia City
Tolven 1–0 Whitworth Provincial

Championship Match
FC Gordonopia City 0–1 Tolven

GPL Relegation Match
Bellum Neu 2–2 FC Gordonopia City (2–2 AET) (4–3 pen.)

Gordonopia Premier League
Gordonopia Cup 2016 Final
5 Year Anniversary

It has been another match for the ages, but only one could claim the crown in the Gordonopia Cup: FC Deska.

In a rematch of the bitterly fought 2015 contest, this years contest certainly lived up to the hype. The two winningest squads in the GPL are virtually even head to head. Deska has established itself as the indisputable leader of defensive play throughout the league. No other squad squad has matched the Northern Wall's unprecedented four Golden Gloves, while the team has had only a single season averaging more than a goal per game. Meanwhile, Kaje stands as perhaps the definitive offensive power in the GPL, with two Golden Boots. This season, the team not only set the record for goals scored in a season, but also had the 2nd, 3rd, and 8th highest scoring players in the season.

Attendance and television viewership fell cleanly in line with last year's match, with countless fans turning out for rallies in several cities, and roughly half of the nation tuning in for the entire match. Once again, 160,000 fans were in attendance at the largest stadium in the nation.

From the start, it was clear that the game would be unbearably close. Deska's defense, anchored by National Team greats like Roger Steiner, Lane Franz and Jay Neuman, was perhaps the league's only match for the powerhouse trio of Keller, Tobias, and Galdinho that made up Kaje's offense. Kaje controlled possession throughout most of the match, but could never truly crack the Northern Wall.

In typical fashion, Kaje came out storming, but unlike last year, couldn't seem to find a breaking point. The entirety of the first half went by scoreless. The biggest opportunity came in the 31st minute, as all three of Kaje's forward players found themselves in the box. After two passes, Tobias found the ball at his feet, and with a single touch set it towards the goal. Only a stunning block by defender Gerard Hendry deflected it away from the net.

Surprisingly, it was Deska that got on the board first. In the 51st minute, Kaje seemed to overextend itself on a play, and in a quick counter, Deska's forward Colin North was faced with only a single defender and Kaje's keeper. In a feat rarely seen from a Deska' striker, North managed to outmaneuver both of them, leaving an open net, and an easy goal.

Deska's defensive strengths seemed reinforced afterwards, and as the clock wore down, Kaje began getting desperate. At 87 minutes, it all paid off. Jere Tobias took a long pass from Galdinho, and passed by three defenders in what is sure to make the shortlist of greatest finals goals. The rocketing shot from fifteen meters out was one that even Jay Neuman had no hope of saving, and it put the game into over time.

The extra time played out much like the first half. Kaje attacked, was crushed by the Wall, and then held off a counter-attack. As 120 inched ever closer, it became apparent that the game would be the first final to be decided by penalties.

With Kaje leading off, the first goals by Tobias, Galdinho and Long were matched by scored from Kranz, Franz and Laslo. Kaje broke in what may go down as one of his greatest saves when Jay Neuman gave Deska the opening it needed on the fourth kick when he deflected Kouzmanoff's left corner shot by the tip of his middle finger. A score by Stahl put Deska up 3-4, and when Keller scored four for Deska, it all came down to Colin North. Already a hero from his performances earlier in the cup, North took curving shot. As the nation held its breath, Jakob Bruhn lept the wrong direction. Deska had won.

In the chaotic celebration that ensued, Deska fans knew the weight of the moment. With two Gordonopia Cup Championships and three regular seasons to their name, FC Deska definitively proved itself to be the strongest team of the league's opening years. Whether that success would continue didn't matter in that moment. Colin North was named Man of the Match, as the entire team accepted the trophy on the podium.

Earlier, Riverside Works played Reichsburg FC at the Peak Dome for the third place match. Reichsburg overcame the league newcomers thanks to a goal by Fritz Gehring, although Riverside's 4th place finish makes it the most successful first year team in history.

Third Place Match
Riverside Works 0–1 Reichsburg FC

Championship Match
Kaje Football 1–1 FC Deska (1–1 AET) (4–5 pen.)

What a roller coaster. As the 6th season of the GPL begins, it seems as if it may be the craziest yet. Although we are only 10 matches in, the table looks like nothing that anyone would have predicted. That is exactly what makes this sport so great.

At the top is Willingham AC with a 6-2-2 record, good for 20 points. Willingham has been a consistent playoff contender throughout its time in the GPL, but has yet to put in a showing like this. Iturributan international Orzaize Lizaran appears to be leading the team, with 7 goals and an assist to his name, while two new players on the defense, Jacob Fletcher in goal and Yanintovian international Peter Andrantinov at right back, have so far remedied some of the AC's regular defensive problems.

Several surprises near the top, such as Gordonopia FC in second and Basin Plain, who was predicted to finish 13th in third, have many stunned. While the former appears to simply be a return to form for a giant, the latter is a refreshing turn for a second tier powerhouse that has until now struggled to find a place in the GPL.

Most surprising at the top, though, is the lack of any of the pre-season favorites. FC Deska and Kaje Football remain mired in 6th and 7th place, with 16 points for each, although Deska does have one less game played. Reinheim Metro, predicted to finish second, is currently out of the Gordonopia Cup spots in 9th place, below Riverside Works on goals scored. West Tolten is in worse shape in 13th place, while the biggest surprise finds predicted 5th placed Reichsburg FC all the way down in 16th.

Whether or not this strange turn of events will continue is anyone's guess. Perhaps the madness will last the duration of the season, or perhaps the teams will settle back into their familiar places.

The aforementioned Lizaran of Willingham AC is the current leader for the Golden boot, with 7 goals and an assist, although he has many players hot on his heels. For the Golden Glove, though, Union Holiday's Jonathon Hughes is the undisputed leader, having let in only 4 goals all season. This is a record for the first leg, with the closest contender being Ludwig Strauss' seven during his legendary 2014 season.

Ten matchdays can make quite a difference.

After ending the first leg in sixth place, FC Deska has risen all the way to first on the table with a total of 35 points, and sits only six wins away from becoming the first team to cross the 100 threshold. The team was predicted to lead the regular season, and if it does in the end, it will raise an unprecedented four season trophies in only six GPL seasons.

Willingham AC, last leg's leader, has managed to hold on to third, although it will need to step it up to hold on to a top spot for the Gordonopia Cup. Other early leaders, such as Gordonopia FC and Basin Plain, remain high in the standings, though they have slipped to the lower half of post-season qualification. Of the initial leaders Teva FC has held its place steady.

Turnarounds from the first leg have fans of two squads very excited. Harbor Football, which ended the first leg in 11th, has risen all the way to second on the back of a stellar 7-0-3 run, and are currently on a six game winning streak. Reichsburg FC, meanwhile, has risen from 16th to ninth on a 5-5-0 run, making them undefeated in ten matches and placing them just outside of Gordonopia Cup qualification.

Perhaps the strangest story is Union Holliday. With only 12 goals against, Union Holiday is ahead of FC Deska's record setting 2014 season at the same stage, and yet the team is currently mired in 13th place. This is entirely due to the team's anemic offense, which has managed a league-low 13 goals for. Hopefully the team will get its offensive act together in order to salavage what could be a record breaking season.

And the roller coaster comes to an end. It's been a wild ride throughout this 6th season of the Gordonopia Premier League, and has set up what is sure to be an exciting Gordonopia Cup.

At the end of the season, it is Reinheim Metro that sits atop the table. Interestingly, it is another team from the Deska metro area that breaks the FC Deska-Kaje Football duopoly that has held every regular season and Gordonopia Cup title since 2014. While not a total surprise, with the team projected to finish second at the beginning, the degree of the victory surprised many. Reinheim had already clinched the title after the 33rd matchday, and the margin of victory, five points, is the highest in the league's short history. The victory came on the back of Reinheim's stellar defense, which let in only 25 goals, and saw the team climb from ninth in week 10 all the way to the top spot. The win makes Reinheim an automatic qualifier for the Champions' Cup.

Teva FC finished in second to gain an automatic Globe Cup Spot, the best finish for the popular squad, while Kaje Football and FC Deska were third and fourth respectively. Unfortunately for Deska, the team was a mere one win away from crossing the 100 regular season win threshold, something that it will have to do next year.

A newly returning Tolven managed to come in fifth, while Basin Plain, Gordonopia FC, and Willingham AC rounded out the Gordonopia Cup qualifiers.

At the bottom of the table, Territories Alliance has the unfortunate position of automatic relegation, while Plains will face a play-in. For the latter team, it may be the end of a long slide that saw the team drop from second place in the inaugural season down to second-to-last.

Player Awards

Golden Boot - Vonn Keller, 27, Kaje Football - With 25 goals to lead the league, and a further seven assists, the closest rival to Vonn Keller was his own teammate, Jere Tobias. As a national team starter and member of Kaje Football's three-man offensive juggernaut, it's no surprise to find the striker earning his second Golden Boot. Keller brings his team's third boot, and his prodigious abilities up front helped lead Kaje to the fourth all-time goals-scored mark.

Golden Glove -Johnathon Stock, 30, Reinheim Metro - After Union Holiday fell apart, there was no competition for Reinheim Metro's Jonathin Stock. The next best keeper, Jay Neuman of FC Deska, let in ten more goals, almost an exact reversal of last year's result. This is only the second time a non-FC Deska keeper has won the award, and the first since 2013. The fact that Stock's Reinheim is in the Deska metro area, though, seems to prove that the northern metropolis is truly the capitol of Gordonopian defense.

Newcomer of the Year - Thorvar Prijholm, 21, FC Deska

Foreigner of the Year - Thorvar Prijholm (Mytannion), 21, FC Deska

Manager of the Year - Dietrich von Mainz, Reinheim Metro

Inter League Cup

The Inter-League Cup has also come to a close, as the 2017 winners of the eight Regional Leagues have met to determine promotion to the GPL.

Both Bolsom Sport and FC Gordonopia City sought to return to the GPL after several years in the lower leagues, while others, such as Tahi AC and Sporting Fusba, have been to the tournament several times without success.

In the end, it was VfB Deska Sud of the Northern Mountains League and Bolsom Sport of the Key League in the final. VfB won the day, giving them automatic promotion to the GPL, making them the third team from the Deska metro area in the league, while Bolsom had the opportunity to play Plains for the opportunity to be in next year's league. However, Plains managed to secure its place thanks to a 1-0 victory.

Gordonopia Premier League
Gordonopia Cup 2017 First Round

Round one complete. Four matches played, four more to go.

The first round of the 2017 Gordonopia Cup started in Reinheim as season winner Reinheim Metro faced off against Willingham AC at their own Northern Field. Reinheim's powerhouse defense faced off against Willingham's formidable offense, as much of the game was back-and-forth. Reinheim begin the game primarily countering, which paid off big time in the 32nd minute, as Martin Mallorn managed to score off of a long pass from goalie Jonathon Stock. Willingham's constant attacks finally broke through at the last minute, though, when Orzaize Lizaran managed to knock a header in a minute into extra time. In the end, though, the heavy favorites won the day as Reinheim managed to come away with its first playoff win, thanks to a second goal from Mallorn, coming off of a set piece in the 102nd minute.

The nation's attention stayed in Deska when FC Deska took on Tolven at the Peak Dome. For Tolven, the game represented a complete turnaround for the newly promoted franchise, after their relegation five years ago in the inaugural season. For Deska, it represented a chance to make up for their loss of the season lead in the final leg, and hopefully make it back to the Champions' League. Despite the fact that Deska's trademark is its 'Northern Wall' offense, they have acquired a reputation for overperforming offensively in the Gordonopia Cup. That was the case today, as both its rarely seen offensive prowess and its formidable defense lifted it to the biggest victory of the first round. Young striker Colin North managed two goals, in the 17th and 81st minutes, while Lane Franz put the ball in the net in the 38th. At the end of the 90 minutes, the anticipation was far from over, as Deska will now face its cross-town rival, Reinheim.

Kaje Football hosted Basin Plain at Oceanview Park in the third game of the round. Kaje came into the game with high expectations, as the home team, favorite, and one of the two dominant squads over the past few years. Meanwhile, Basin Plain was came on the back of its first successful season after several years in the league. Kaje's squad, led by its dominant triumvirate of Galdinho, Jere Tobias, and Vonn Keller, started out strong, with Galdinho feeding an assist to Tobias in the 13th minute. From there, though, Basin seemed to find its footing, and ended up fighting its way back to victory. Martin Lowe's goal in the 28th minute evened the score, while a shot from Lucas Osborne in the 48th gave the underdogs the lead. Albert Wagner's header in the 81st minute only sealed the victory.

The final match was played at Iron Harbor Stadium between Teva FC and Gordonopia FC. Teva, entering as the second seed and coming on the back of its most successful season ever, faced off against a fellow historic powerhouse, Gordonopia FC, whose Gordonopia Cup-season represented somewhat of a turnaround from its slump the past few years. As expected, it was a high-scoring affair, and in the end the crowd watched as seven goals were scored. Teva's four came from Itzaina Erreka in the 28th and 70th minutes, Viktor Son in the 30th, and Lewis Naylor
in the 17th. Gordonopia's, meanwhile, came in the 10th from Jonathon Turner, 47th by Jeff Draper and 56th from Everett Stanton. In the end, it was Teva FC who held the day, and will now go on to face Basin Plain in the semi-finals.

Gordonopia Cup First Round
Reinheim Metro 1–1 Willingham AC (2–1 AET)
FC Deska 3–0 Tolven
Kaje Football 1–3 Basin Plain
Teva FC 4–3 Gordonopia FC

Gordonopia Premier League
Gordonopia Cup 2017 Semi-Finals

No one expected it, at least for one of the matches, but the 2012 GPL semi-finals became perhaps the biggest defensive slugfest in tournament history.

As first seeded Reinheim Metro played its crosstown rival, FC Deska, in Teva, virtually everyone knew it would be a low scoring affair. Both teams are renowned for their defense, with Deska taking home the lowest goals against during four of the league's six seasons, and Reinheim topping the Defensive charts this season on their way to a regular season championship. That assumption proved to be right.

Throughout the entirety of the 90 minutes, not a single goal was scored. Close chances came several times, such as when Colin North managed to tip a cross towards the goal, only to have Reinheim keeper Jonathon Stock edge it out of the way in the 21st minute. Both keepers, Stock and Deska's Jay Neuman, were kept relatively busy, but nothing managed to get through. It wasn't until the 99th minute that a hole was finally punched when former Deska striker Martin Mallorn managed to knock in a set piece after Neuman made a rare midjudgement. Deska managed to stay alive thanks to a header by North in the 117th minute, sending the game into penalties.

In the end, it came down to a brutal 3-2 victory for Deska, as Jay Neuman managed to block the shots of Mallorn, Omar Percy, and Nikolaus Benton.

Few expected the brawl between Basin Plain and Teva FC in Latimere to be even closer. Both teams came into the game with wildly different motivations. Whilst Teva sought to guarantee their best performance yet, and solidify themselves as one of the elite teams in the league, Basin Plain was looking to continue their miraculous turnaround year that saw them earn their first Gordonopia Cup berth in four seasons, and advance past the opening round in a major upset of Kaje Football.

Once again, both teams were unable to score during the entirety of regulation, despite some good chances. Unlike the first match, though, the scoresheet remained blank throughout AET. Finally, the team who would face Deska came down to penalty kicks.

Teva's depth in kickers turned out to be the decisive edge. Itzaina Erreka, Lewis Naylor, Gabriel Ruiz and Albert Wagner managed to put balls past the Basin kicker, while only three Basin Plain players managed to do the same. As the dust settled, the final matachup was clear: Empire Stadium would play host to FC Deska and Teva FC.

Gordonopia Cup Semi-Finals
Reinheim Metro 0–0 FC Deska (1–1 AET) (2–3 pen.)
Basin Plain 0–0 Teva FC (0–0 AET) (3–4 pen.)

Gordonopia Premier League
Gordonopia Cup 2017 Final

The mother of all matches is now over, but in the end, one team would add yet another big win to its already sizable trophy case: FC Deska.

FC Deska made its fourth consecutive Championship appearance in full form, facing a Teva FC team that has been on the rise for many of the past several seasons. For one, it was another chance to demonstrate why it is the most dominant team in the GPL. For the other, it was an opportunity to cap off its best season yet in spectacular fashion. In the end, only one could emerge victorious.

The football excitement in the midst of the world cup, and the status of the match as a showdown between two old-school titans with widespread fanbases, helped boost the match slightly over last year's ratings, with around 55% of the nation viewing the entirety of the match. As has been the case for the entirety of the cup, Empire Stadium was packed to its fullest with 160,000 excited, roaring fans.

Throughout most of the early match, the two teams played to their strong-suits. While Teva launched several powerful attacks led by its formidable offensive front, with several current and former internationals such as Dennis Key, Gerard Kuchler, and Itzaina Erreka, Deska countered with its virtually impenetrable "Northern Wall".

For the championship first-timers, though, it proved to be a tough ordeal to even get close to a goal. Deska keeper Jay Neuman, as well as defenders ranging from Saugeais' Marius Dupond to the fresh-faced Oliver White, managed to keep any threat well under control. As the match wore on, it started to become clear that Teva was being worn down. At the half, they were forced to make two substitutions in order to try and shake the game up, and in the 71st minute they were once again forced to pull a man out. While Deska's defensive posture had allowed its players to stay relatively fresh, Teva's constant attacks were showing their effect on the talented but, in comparison, inexperienced team.

Not until the end of the second half did Deska begin to go on the offensive, though it ended the 90 minutes with a scoreless sheet. In AET, though, Deska's advantage became immediately clear. Forward Colin North managed to sneak by Teva's defense and knock a goal in at the 98 minute mark, and Thorvar Prijholm managed to do the same off of a cross in the 106th. In the 117th minute, Lane Franz put the final stamp on Deska's victory, and when the time ran out, Deska's fans were ecstatic. With three regular season titles, and now three Gordonopia Cup championships, under their belt, Deska stood alone by both measures as the greatest team in Gordonopian football.

Just before the match, Reinheim Metro and Basin Plain dueled at the Peak Dome in Deska for third place. Basin Plain capped off a great turnaround year with a victory 2-0.

Championship Match
FC Deska 0–0 Teva FC (3–0 AET)

Third Place Match
Reinheim Metro 0–2 Basin Plain

And they're off! The Gordonopia Premier League's seventh season is underway, and once again, it is anyone's game.

No one is surprised to find FC Deska at the top of the table, though like last year the top flight is fairly dense. Three teams, Gordonopia FC, West Tolten, and to the surprise of some Harbor Football, are within one game of Deska and all but GFC share nine games played with the leader. The Northern Wall's preeminence comes on the back of its characteristically strong defense, with the team allowing only six goals thus far. We will have to wait and see if Deska falls victim to the second-leg curse that so often plagues the early leader.

Union Holiday is notable addition to the top teams, coming in at sixth. So far, the team's 'Holiday Five' quintet of young, ex-academy stars seems to be performing well, with all but one in their rookie season. It will take more playtime to determine if the team can hang on or if it will slip as it has so many times before.

Tolven and Willingham AC are the two expected contenders that are currently mired at the bottom of the table, in 16th and 14th respectively. It should be noted that Tolven found itself in a similar position last season, but managed to rise into fifth by the end. This early on, it is not remotely too late for teams to move up.

Some clear front runners are beginning to emerge for player awards. Jay Neuman of FC Deska is, of course, the favorite for the Golden Glove, though others such as Jonathon Hughes of Union Holiday are certainly in the running as the season plays out. For the Golden Boot, Jonathon Turner of Gordonopia FC is the current leader, with seven goals and two assists, but Vonn Keller of Kaje Football, now without Jere Tobias, as well as Harbor Football's Gary Knox are hot on his heels.

Can we be the first to say we're stunned?

Unlike many teams that appear to be early over-performers, Basin Plain is defying gravity and now tops the league. A team that was predicted to finish eleventh, after losing National Team midfielder Zachary Johnston, as well as former star Mansel Reed sits atop the table with an 11-3-5 record, although second placed FC Deska does have a game in hand. The team's solid defense, which currently ranks third in the league, and reliable attacking have allowed it to keep winning, and rocket up the standings from seventh into the lead. Time will tell if they will be able to hold on.

FC Deska and Gordonopia FC, the oldest rivals in the league, sit at second and third respectively. The former is characteristically impenetrable on the defense, with a mere 13 goals allowed thus far, while the former tops the league in goals by a wide margin, with 50 thus far. If either were to pick up their performance in the opposite category, they would likely be topping the table.

Union Holiday continues to impress, with the 'Holiday Five' leading the team from sixth into fourth. For a squad that has been so mediocre for so long, there are many fans who hope that the pressure does not become overwhelming. Additionally, the young forward duo of Cedric Buller and Max Young could pick up a few more goals; the second best defense in the league is a great accomplishment, but it is useless if they fail score goals, as Reinheim Metro has had trouble doing this year, and Union is all too familiar with. Many a GPL fan remembers the fate that befell the Kjeldor Knights, who managed to earn the Golden Glove in 2013, yet failed to even make the post season due to pitiful offensive numbers.

Mired at the bottom of the table is Riverside Works, followed by Tolven and Bellum Neu. While the third of those teams has never managed a good performance, Riverside fans still vividly recall their team's GPL debut a mere two seasons ago, which resulted in a fifth place league finish, and a semi-final appearance in the Cup. Tolven loyalists, many still celebrating their team's return to the GPL and fifth place finish last season, are beginning to have flashbacks to the inaugural season's disappointments.

For the Golden Boot, Gordonopia FC's Jonathon Turner has emerged as the clear favorite, with 15 goals and five assists helping buoy his team's numbers. Orizaze Lizaran of Willingham AC and and Vonn Keller of Kaje Football seem to be the strongest contenders in the chase pack. For the Golden Glove, Jay Neuman appears to be untouchable at the top as he fights to bring home his club's fifth Golden Glove, and his third. With seven fewer goals allowed than the next best keeper, Neuman's fate rests in his own hands.

Riverside Works ahead of Bellum Neu on head to head
VfB Deska Sud ahead of Plains on head to head

Defying all odds, the 2018 season of the GPL has seen some legitimate shake-ups at the top. After a thrilling conclusion, an unexpected underdog, Basin Plain, has managed to top the table and earn its first league title.

In the end, the title came down to either FC Deska, seeking its fourth league title, or Basin in the final match of the season at the Peak Dome. A win by Deska would give the Northern Wall the title, while a draw or win by Basin would retain their lead. The game came down to an 87th minute goal by Basin's Howard Duncan to even the score, and keep Deska in second.

While familiar faces filled the next few spots, with Kaje Football following Deska on head to head, and Gordonopia FC, Teva FC, and West Tolten rounding out four through six, the final two qualification spots where filled by newcomers to the Gordonopia Cup. Union Holiday claimed the seventh slot with the best performance from a team that has somehow held on to the middle of the pack since the inaugural season. With their first Gordonopia Cup qualification, and their first winning season, in hand, Holiday fans are likely to be satisfied no matter what the result is against FC Deska in the cup. With such a young cadre of stars, all of whom have committed to long term, or even career, contracts with the team, they will likely build on the success for years to come. To the surprise of everyone, VfB Deska Süd edged out Plains on head-to-head to claim the final qualification spot, giving them a Gordonopia Cup appearance in their first season.

At the bottom of the table, Bellum Neu narrowly lost to Riverside Works to hold the automatic relegation slot. Ironically, the year that sees 2015 promotee Basin Plain win also sees Bellum Neu, promoted in the same year, move back down to the lower leagues. Riverside Works will face a playoff with the runner-up of the Inter-League Cup.

Player Awards

Golden Boot - Jonathon Turner, 21, Gordonopia FC - Do the Old Greens finally have a player to live up the legacy of Howard Hawkins, James Branson, and other legendary forwards to play for the nation's oldest squad? In young Jonathon Turner, perhaps they do. After several weak years, Gordonopia FC appears to be back on its game, with several young players (including the aforementioned Hawkins' 16 year old son) bringing together its starting line up. None made more of an impact this year than Jonathon Turner who, several years after moving up from the academy system, is finally having his breakout year. With a formidable 27 goals and seven assists to his name, Turner was a dominant force up front. Here's hoping he can continue his success, and perhaps even earn a place on the national team.

Golden Glove -Jay Neuman, 23, FC Deska - When Jay Neuman took over from the legendary Ludwig Strauss, most believed he would take some time to adjust to the top level. Four years and three golden gloves later, it seems that Jay Neuman may actually surpass the accomplishments of his predecessor. Whatever Deska puts in its water that produces incredible defensivemen, it seems that Neuman's talents will lead the club for years to come. With only 26 goals against, nine better than the next best team, can you really say otherwise?

Newcomer of the Year - Karl Wein, 17, Union Holiday

Foreigner of the Year - Gerard Kuchler (SAU), 23, Teva FC

Manager of the Year - Arthur Miller, Basin Plain

Inter League Cup

Promotion to the GPL was determined through the Inter-League Cup, played alongside the waning matchdays of the top league by the winners of the eight regional leagues.

A large number of familiar faces filled out the competitors in the tournament. Four former GPL teams competed in the first round, while all but two had participated in the cup previously. Some, like FC Gordonopia City, Sporting Fusba, and Iron Harbor SC hailed from major metropolises, while others, like Wolfhold Woods, where practically small-town teams.

The final match came down to FC Gordonopia City and Sporting Fusba. An exciting match at Empire Stadium capped the tournament, with Sporting Fusba coming out on top to replace Bellum Neu and become the first team to represent the fourth largest city in the nation since Fusba United was relegated several years ago. FC Gordonopia City won a playoff against GPL 16th Riverside Works to rejoin the GPL after several years in the lower leagues.

First Round
FC Gordonopia City 2–1 Al-Kharid
Kjeldor Knights 1–2 Atletik Mainz
Bolsom Sport 0–3 Iron Harbor SC
Sporting Fusba 4–2 Wolfhold Woods

Semi-Finals
FC Gordonopia City 0–0 Atletik Mainz (1–0 AET)
Iron Harbor SC 0–1 Sporting Fusba

Championship Match
FC Gordonopia City 1–2 Sporting Fusba

GPL Relegation Playoff
FC Gordonopia City 1–1 Riverside Works (2–1 AET)

Gordonopia Premier League
Gordonopia Cup 2018 First Round

The competitors all played to their strengths in the first round of the 2018 Gordonopia cup.

The first and fourth games consisted of (1) Basin Plain against (8) VfB Deska Sud, and (2) FC Deska versus (7) Union Holiday, all four of which are defensive-leaning clubs. Between the two games, a total of two goals were scored, though the winning team was not always the expected one.

In the first matchup, Basin played their first home Gordonopia Cup game, after a miraculous underdog season, against a team in their first year in the league. Basin's Martin Lowe scored early off of a header in the 18th minute, but the offenses remained silent from then on. The match resorted to somewhat of a physical slugfest, with three yellow cards, but the final result was that the defenses of both squads were able to shut down any serious drives, with the few shots on goal easily handled by the two keepers.

FC Deska hosted Union Holiday for the other defensive battle, though it was one more of skill than physicality. Like Basin, Union Holiday was coming off of a miracle season, fueled by a quintet of young stars dubbed the Holiday Five. While Deska was expected to win handily, it was Holiday forward Max Young that struck first, scoring off of a set piece in the 63rd minute. Neither team was able to get another goal, and wehn time ran out, Union Holiday's small visiting contingent was ecstatic. This loss marks the first time FC Deska has ever placed lower than 3rd in the Cup, and snaps a Gordonopia Cup winning streak that has been ongoing since the team's loss in the 2015 Final.

By contrast, the four offensive powerhouses in the final played each other in the second and third matches of the round, and it showed.

Gordonopia FC hosted Teva FC at home in a classic matchup. It was immediately apparent that the game would be frenzied, and both squads came storming out of the gates. Teva's Kuchler earned a goal in the 12th minute, which was followed up by strikes from Erreka in the 29th and 63rd minutes. Meanwhile, GFC scored from Jonathon Turner in the 17th and 41st minutes, and from Jeff Draper in the 81st. The game ultimately remained even through AET, and came down to penalty kicks, which Teva won.

In Bahar Territory, Kaje Football and West Tolten faced off in a battle of the two highest-scoring teams in GPL history. Like the previous game, the score would end up 3-3 at the end of regulation, with Kaje's Fritz Lahm scoring in the 2nd minute, Galdinho in the 53rd, and Darry Kouzmanoff in the 81st, while West's scores came from a hat trick by Hugh Lawrence in the 22nd, 26th, and 73rd minutes. Kaje ended the game before it could go to penalties, though, as star striker Vonn Keller earned his first goal of the night in the 115th minute to give Kaje the win.

Basin Plain will now face off against Teva FC, while Kaje Football will play Union Holiday.

Gordonopia Cup First Round
Basin Plain 1–0 VfB Deska Sud
Gordonopia FC 3–3 Teva FC (3–3 AET) (3–5 pen.)
Kaje Football 3–3 West Tolten (4–3 AET)
FC Deska 0–1 Union Holiday

Gordonopia Premier League
Gordonopia Cup 2018 Semi-Finals

The first of the 2018 Gordonopia Cup Semi-Finals took place at Islands Field in Latimere, with (5) Teva FC facing off against the Regular Season Champion, (1) Basin Plain. While Basin Plain was coming off of a miracle season, Teva continues to be a regular contender at the top, and is in the hunt for its first piece of silverware in the GPL era after taking second in both the season and the Cup last year.

It was a nailbiting match, with neither team able to maintain the momentum for long. Basin Plain's goal from Elwin Morrison in the 31st minute was matched by a goal from Teva's Gabriel Ruiz in the 38th. Teva then managed to pull ahead in the 64th minute from a penalty by Gerard Kuchler, only to have Basin tie up the score in the 77th minute off of Howard Duncan's header. The game-winning goal was not scored until the 113th minute, well into AET, when Viktor Son of Teva managed a tap in off of a cross to put his team into their second consecutive final.

In the other semi-final, the score line was practically the opposite of what many expected. (3) Kaje Football hosted (7) Union Holiday at Iron Harbor Stadium in Teva, a set up fairly similar to the previous match.

While it is Kaje that is known for its offense, Union Holiday was the team that came out guns blazing. Marc Castleton scored in the 4th and 18th minutes, while Cedric Buller knocked in a 21st minute goal to put the underdogs up 3-0. Kaje managed to get on the board in the 40th minute from a goal by Vonn Keller, but it was all they could muster. Scores from Gerhard Woltz in the 56th minute and from Max Young in the 70th put Union up an incredible 5-1, and sent them to their first ever Gordonopia Cup Final.

Gordonopia Cup Semi-Finals
Basin Plain 2–2 Teva FC (2–3 AET)
Kaje Football 1–5 Union Holiday

Gordonopia Premier League
Gordonopia Cup 2018 Final

The capstone on the 2018 GPL Season is now complete, and Teva FC has won its first Gordonopia Cup.

After rising to become one of the most successful teams in the GPL, Teva entered the match hoping to come away with its first title. The team had made it to the final last year, and had made it to the cup every year save the inaugural season, but had never won either the Cup or the regular season. Union Holiday, on the other hand, looked to put a final stamp on what has been an exciting breakthrough season for a team that has been mired for so long in mediocrity.

National attention was slightly down from previous years, with a television audience composed of about 48% of the nation, though the stadium sold out all 160,000 tickets and the game was still the talk of most Gordonopians.

It was a close match throughout, with both teams coming out strong. Teva made a number of penetrating attacks early on, though Holiday's tough defense managed to stop most of them. Jonathon Hughes, Holiday's keeper and the secondary to Jay Neuman on the National Team, managed to stop the rest. Holiday also dealt its fair share of blows, led by the forward members of the Holiday Five, though to no avail.

The teams went into the half without making it on the board, leaving the fans on the edge of their seats. When they came back from the half, Teva finally had its miracle moment in the 51st minute. A pass from Viktor Son to Itzaina Erreka, narrowly onsides, allowed the Astograth forward a near perfect shot at the goal. Miraculously, Jonathon Hughes managed to catch the ball, but as he landed, it seemed to bounce loose. Noticing this, Saugeais striker Gerard Kuchler sprinted in from the wing, connecting with the ball just before Hughes could lunge to secure it. The goal was good, and it was all Teva needed.

Though neither team let off the gas for the rest of the game, the back-and-forth battle from the first half seemed to carry over. Holiday made some frenzied drives late in the game, pulling Hughes to the other end twice, but Teva managed to hold on to its narrow lead. When the final whistle blew after a crushing six minutes of stoppage, Teva's supporters were ecstatic. After a devastating breakdown in AET one year ago, Teva stood as the champions of the 2018 season.

Prior to the match, Basin plain and Kaje Football played in a match that went into penalties for third place. Ultimately, Basin Plain prevailed, giving them their second consecutive third.

Championship Match
Teva FC 1–0 Union Holiday

Third Place Match
Basin Plain 2–2 Kaje Football (3–3 AET) (3–2 pen.)

The GPL has never seen an opening this tight. Ten matchdays in and there is no definitive leader. Three teams, Gordonopia FC, Latimere United, and Willingham AC, are even on points with 18 for the lead, separated only by head to head results. Basin Plain and West Tolten are only two points back. Will this wild ride continue?

There have been no unexpected success stories so far, though second-year team VfB Deska Süd is once again in post-season contention. The real shocking story is the abysmal starts of some of the league's dominant squads: FC Deska and Kaje Football. Projected to finish 1st and 3rd respectively, the two are nine points back from the lead with 11 points and 3-2-4 records. For Deska especially, a team that has never seen a start worse than fifth, it will take a lot of digging to move up. Have the formulas that served them so well finally been cracked?

Slightly further down is Sporting Fusba, which seems to be having a hard time adjusting to the move to the top league. The team is tied for the second worst start in history, with an dreadful 0-3-7 record, leaving them winless in ten matches.

As far as players go, a few front-runners are emerging. Gerard Kuchler and Zuzen Sagarribay, Saugeais and Astograth nationals respectively, are doing a bang up job with Teva FC, each with seven goals, though Kuchler leads with three assists to Sagarribay's one. Jonathon Turner of Gordonopia FC is also well in the running, with eight goals and an assist to his name.

Surprisingly, Jay Neuman of FC Deska is one of the leaders for the Golden Boot, having let in only eight goals thus far. His only close competitor is cross-town competitor Johnathon Stock of Reinheim Metro, who has only seen seven balls whiz past him.

Well that's what you call movement. Ten games later and it seems that the entire league is in flux.

Just about the only thing that remained the same is Gordonopia FC hanging on to a razor thin lead; two points over second and third places, but with one extra game already played. Still, FC's tremendous scoring effort has helped them put a lot of balls into the net, making for what seems like the best Gordonopia FC squad in years.

But how about that chase pack? In second is Tolven, which has ascended from 10th after the first leg by virtue of not conceding a single loss. Just behind them on goal difference is FC Deska. How could we ever doubt them? The Northern Wall is 7-1-1 since the end of the first leg, and in that time has let in only five goals. A pickup in scoring, albeit a small one, has not hurt their chances either.

Meanwhile, several teams have gone into what seems like a free fall. Most notable is VfB Deska Sud which has won only one game since finishing the first leg in Gordonopia Cup position. They are now second from last; in danger of a relegation playoff.

Jonathon Turner of Gordonopia FC seems to have taken the lead for the Golden Boot, having put a tremendous seventeen balls in the back of the net, in addition to his four assists. Hugh Lawrence of West Tolten has moved into contention, with a solid fourteen goals and eight assists to his name. There are also a number of other attackers close behind.

As for the Glove, it seems to be a two horse race, with Deska's Neuman and Reinheim's Stock allowing only 13 goals a piece, though Stock has played one more game.
