The Paripana Sporting Council invites the world’s greatest sportsmen and sportswomen to convene in Aeropag, Paripana for the first World Games, a multi-sport festival for non-Olympic events.
Signups are now closed.

INSTRUCTIONS
Do not post “placeholders”, “provisional signups”, and the like. These serve no purpose, and may result in your entries being missed if you edit them in afterward (see the section about corrections).

Copy the list of events below. Under each event, put the names of the athletes that you wish to participate in that event, if any—if you are not sending anyone to participate in an event, remove it from the list. The number in brackets after each event indicates the maximum number of entries each national World Games committee may have in that event. If only a number is shown—e.g., “[2]”—it is an individual event, and you must give the name of each individual (though you may enter fewer than the maximum number). If a team events has a specific team size indicated—e.g., “[1 team of 4]”—you must give the name of each team member; all four names should be on the same line. If a team event just says “[1 team]”, you must not give the names of the team members here; rosters for those events belong in the roster thread.

In your signup, you should specify your national committee’s three-letter code; if you do not, one will be assigned to you.

ENTRY LIMITS
Each national committee may have a delegation of no more than 200 entries, exculding entries in invitational events. An entry consists of one individual or one team entering one event—this means, e.g., that a team of four in one event counts as a single entry, while a single athlete participating in two events counts as two entries.

You may have two separate delegations (i.e., a master nation and a puppet nation), so long as you declare that these belong to the same person. The entry limit applies separately to each of them, so the two nations combined may have as many as 400 entries. You may enter more than one puppet, as long as you declare that all of them belong to the same person, the total number of entries across all of your nations is no more than 400, and no more than two of your nations enter any particular event.

SKILL MODIFIERS
Optionally, you can put a skill modifier after each of your athletes, in parentheses. Skill modifiers are whole numbers from 0 to 100: 0 for the worst athletes and 100 for the best. Skill modifiers are assigned per entry, as explained above; a team of four has a single skill modifier, while an athlete participating in multiple events has a separate modifier for each event. The average of all modifiers in a delegation, excluding invitational events, may be at most 50; any delegation with a higher average will have its modifiers reduced. The average of all modifiers for invitational events which are held must also be no more than 50; modifiers for invitational events which are not held will be excluded from this average.

If any of your skill modifiers end with 8, please check the “Disable smilies” option before you post. 8)

JOINT TEAMS
Multiple national committees may choose assemble a joint team for any team event. Such a team will be considered as counting toward the entry limits and skill modifier average of each nation involved (and must be given the same skill modifier by each person entering it). When entering a joint team, you must list the national committees involved, and if the event does not use individual athlete names (i.e., it says “[1 team]”), you will need to give the team a name.

ROSTER THREAD
You can put any additional information about your delegation—e.g., team rosters, flag bearer, and national anthem—in the roster thread. The signup thread should be limited to information important to the signup process—i.e., entries, TLAs, invitational sports, and discussion.

DEADLINE
All delegations should be posted by 16:00 UTC on Friday, 2011-10-21. Signups after this deadline may be accepted or rejected at my discretion; very small delegations are more likely to be accetped. The World Games will run from Tuesday, 2011-10-25 to Monday, 2011-11-07, with the opening ceremony on 2011-10-24. A schedule of events will be provided after signups have closed and the format of each event has been set.

CORRECTIONS
Please do not edit your signup post if more than twenty-four hours have passed since you posted it, or if the deadline for signups has passed. If you need to make a correction, indicate the changes you wish to make in a new post. Corrections made after the signup deadline may or may not be accepted, depending on the severity of the change.

INVITATIONAL EVENTS
Invitational events will be held should there be sufficient demand. Invitational events will not be considered official World Games events; medals will be awarded differing from those awarded in the official events. Invitational events must meet the following requirements in order to be considered:

  • The event must not be contested at the Games of the Olympiad. This affects the sports of aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing/kayaking, cycling, equestrian, fencing, (association) football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling. Events in these sports may only be proposed if they are different from the Olympic events.
  • The event must not require snow or ice.
  • The event must not require special facilities not available in Aeropag. (I’ll evaluate this after an event is proposed, since you probably don’t have a complete inventory of what is available in Aeropag.)
In order to nominate an invitational sport, provide the following information:

  • A list of events within the sport. This may involve a split into men’s and women’s events, a series of weight classes, a series of distances, or whatever similar categorization is relevant to the sport. Some or all of these events may be consolidated if interest levels are not sufficient to sustain every possible event; you should specify if there are any events that are sufficiently dissimilar that their entrants cannot be funneled into a single event.
  • A set of sample results for the sport that can be used to set up a scorinator for it. If the sport is fictitious, either a set of fictitious results will be needed, or a statement that the results are similar enough to some other sport that the same scorination parameters can be used. If results differ for each event within the sport, sample results will be needed for each event. If the sport is already available in xkoranate, ignore this requirement.
  • A brief explanation of the competition format that should be used. This can take the form of a reference to a real-life competition (a link to information should be provided unless the format follows that of an event in the Olympic Games or World Games), or a detailed explanation if the sport requires some unique format.
  • The maximum number of individuals or teams that each national committee should be permitted to enter in each event, and, for team events, the size of the team.
You may enter invitational events as you would any other event. Please do not “endorse” events; this is utterly meaningless. The list of invitational events to be held will be confirmed about three days before the signup deadline; the choice of events will be based on the above criteria and the number of entries.

EXAMPLE ENTRY
This is the preferred format for entries; it need not be followed precisely, but entries with exceptionally poor formatting may be rejected. Do not enclose your entries in spoiler tags, unless you’re trying to hide them from me, in which case you probably won’t see them participate in their respective events.

Proposed invitation events
ROLLER SPORTS: Flat track roller derby
Women's team event; possibly men's team event (though this does not exist IRL to my knowledge).
Teams consist of eight players on the rink at any one time; substitutions mean squads will typically number around 15, and one team per delegation would be appropriate.
Scores can be any positive integer, and could reasonably be modelled by a normal distribution with mean ~130, standard deviation ~35, and skill modifiers as appropriate.
(Sample scores, from recent RL games, source @DNNScores: 220-96, 218-75, 130-117, 274-36, 170-103, 273-64, 122-102, 133-117, 137-127, 159-45, 186-134, 110-62, 161-127, 212-139, 140-105, 161-132, 117-107, 178-136, 161-132.)
Draws can happen - overtime, if needed, lasts two minutes, c.f. sixty for a full game, but both teams can score at once in that time (which is not the case in regulation time), so overtime scoring should be ~7% of regulation scoring. (The one sample score I have found is 13-8, which is consistent with this.) Overtime should be repeated if necessary to find a winner.

ULTIMATE
Team event; open, women's, junior open, and junior women's divisions would be appropriate.
Scorinator already present in xkoranate.

The Cahrphyan World Games committee would also like to propose an invitational event. It is a traditional Cahrphyan sport, that have been played for more as 1000 years by the Cah'rafilui tribes. It's called (Cahrphyan) Haka Pei.

HAKA PEI
Men's (5)
Women's (5)

Haka Pei is a competition where two banana tree stumps are tied together and used as a sled. The competitor lies, back down with feet facing downhill, on the sled and slide down a hill. The competitors are judged by speed and by their ability to stay on the sled throughout the duration of the slide.
Sample results:

1. Leošu'u Reike'ui 16.34
2. Anakaleaka'i Palokuku'i 16.43
3. Wulopokana Keleik'ei 17.21
4. Ana'ui Pataku'ui 20.10
5. Makalu'u Atasi'mita DNF*

* This athlete probably fell off his sledge, hasn't reached the finish line for another reason.

All athletes will race in the qualifying race, the best 20 will enter the final.

We hope that your nation is interested in joining this wonderful, traditional sport. Cahrphya would be very honoured if their national sport would be accepted as invitational event.

The Kingdom of Cahrphya would like to propose a second invitational sport, the Ancient tribal sport of Kemelilui (literally translated; the game of the sea-people). Kemelilui is played in the open ocean, with 2 goals 500m apart. The players are on rafts. There are 4 rafts, with a man and woman on each. Traditionally, you may only take part in the sport on a raft with your spouse. The man paddles, while the woman uses a large, shallow ladle to pass, shoot, and handle the Kemelibol, a small rubber ball about 3 inches across. When the Kemelibol enters the goal, the scoring team is awarded a point. Traditionally, Kemelilui matches begin at sunrise and go until sundown. For international matches, the rules have been modified. The match will end when one side scores 15 goals, or 12 hours elapse from the beggining of the match, whichever comes first.

Results for a full 12-hour match obviously would be less than 15, and should compare to a low-scoring lacrosse game (about the 8-15 range). A scorinator is needed, however, which may complicate things. [/ooc]

this is a very traditional Cahrphyan sport, and the most recent match by tribal rules (sunup to sundown, longer field) was won by the Cahr'filipo'fo tribe 21-16 against their rivals Skar'un'de. Tribes traditionally use Kemelilui matches as a substitute for war.

Example results for international competition.
Chenkorya 3 - 15 Cahrphya
Morocco 2 - 2 Carmadin
Russia 3- 14 America

We dearly hope you will participate in this ancient element of Cahrphyan tradition.

Any problems, please tg Carmadin. If no answer, TG Chenkorya

The Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuk Olympic Committee would like to propose lockey as an invitational event. Lockey is somewhat like ice hockey on grass. Players use lacrosse sticks and hit the ball on the ground with the head of the stick. Team with the most goals wins. More info can be found at http://www.nswiki.net/index.php?title=Lockey. Each team should have 16 players.

OOC: The lacrosse formula on xkoranate is used for lockey, as the scoring is similar. I would suggest using group play followed by a knockout round depending on the number of participants if lockey is chosen.

----Posting for Cahrphya, my joint puppet with Chenkorya----

because of the length of Kemelilui matches, it would be impractical to do pool play. We propose a straigh single elimination tourney, or double elimination, at the discretion of the host.

Bostopia's co-ordinating team for the World Games is pleased to enter Bostopia's teams into the following events, registering under the TLA of "BOS".

Furthermore, we wish to enter Rugball as a Invitational Event. Rugball is a team sport played by 11 players on each side, with 5 substitute players, of which 3 can be used. The maximum squad size recommended to the organisers of the World Games is 23. While largely played as a men's sport, the Rugball Association (the sports governing body) would be very open to a women's competition, following the same rules and organisation as the men's game. We recommend the tournament take a straight knockout format, similar to that used in the knockout phase of the (Association) World Cup. However, if the World Games organisers feel it would be more beneficial to have a league or league-then-knockout, this would again be more than acceptable. National associations should enter no more than one team of either gender. In terms of special equipment, the sport will require rugby posts being provided in place of soccer goals. The RA is happy to help in providing and installing these if necessary.

INVITATIONAL SPORT PROPOSAL: Babbage rules football
Mixed [1 team]

For a description of this established NS sport, see this article.
This sport already exists in xkoranate.
A standard pools-plus-eliminations format common to most team sports will be satisfactory.
Note that there is only one possible event. Like korfball, Babbage code has mixed-sex teams integrated into the structure of the sport.

TBI enter a team in this event.
NS World Cup: Runner-up 55/59; Third place 50/52/58/62/63; Host 49/54/60.
Founding member, Global Cricket Federation; 2x Twenty20 world champions.

Scoring is the same in full sided rugby league. A set of match results can be found here. A format of group stage followed by knockout stage akin to that in the linked tournament is recommended. Each event would be restricted to one team per World Games Committee (WGC).

HURLING/CAMOGIE
Hurling – Men's (80)
Camogie – Women's (60)

Hurling and camogie use the same scoring system as Gaelic football, though the match results tend to be higher. Scores from a number of hurling matches can be found here. It might also be worth noting that two files for scoring hurling have been developed for hurling. Both of them (one made by myself and the other by The Babbage Islands) use the footba11er paradigm. The footba11er paradigm I understand only supports golden goal style extra-time, extra time in hurling however contains two ten minute periods, a paradigm which supports such an option would perhaps be a better choice.

Whilst hurling and camogie are technically different sports, camogie is almost identical to hurling but played by women. As such the two sports have been put forward as one. For what it's worth scores from this years All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship can be found here.

In real life the top level of hurling competitions are knockout, whilst camogie as seen in the above link is a league followed by knockouts. Either format would be fine, though a league followed by knockout format would probably need smaller groups than the camogie one shown. Each event would be restricted to one team per WGC.
