Anti-smoking advocacy groups are mounting pressure on the Government to do more as new figures released from the Ministry of Health show little improvement in the number of Drongonians lighting up.
Figures released yesterday by the Ministry show that the amount of Drongonians smoking regularly over the March 2022 - 23 period has reduced to 27%, down 2% on the 2021-22 figures. However, the modest decrease in regular smokers has been outstripped by a 5% increase in the number of people vaping daily, totalling 24%. In total, over half of Drongonians are either smoking or vaping daily.
Bridgette Miller, head of the non-profit advocacy group Anti-Smoking Action Drongonia said that while she and others were "somewhat pleased" with the continued downward trend of those who are daily smoking, the Government is not putting enough resource into those vaping. Miller told TVDG's Breakfast this morning that she believes "The tobacco and nicotine industries in Drongonia clearly have the Government by the short and curlies - and by the looks of it, people at the top seem to enjoy that".
It was only earlier this year that the Government formally cut tobacco industry subsidies, which have been ongoing for almost six decades. Anti-smoking campaigners expressed frustration earlier this year as the Anti-Smoking Act 2023 contained very little in the way of changes to the sale and supply of both vapes and cigars. Currently, vapes can be purchased at any establishment with a permit to sell cigarettes, and there are no restrictions on the nicotine content, flavours, or marketing used on products available through these physical outlets.
Anti-tobacco adovcates are urging the Ministry of Health and the wider Government to look overseas, and follow New Zealand's example. The country recently introduced a ban on cigarette and cigar sales to anyone born after January 1 2009. New Zealand has also regulated that from later this year, single-use 'disposable' vapes are only permitted to have a concentration of 20mg/mL of nicotine, among other changes.
Meanwhile in Drongonia, there are no limits to the nicotine concentration of vapes, with TVDG able to find online retailers selling 65mg/mL vape cartridges for use with pen-style devices. In addition, the consent process for vape and tobacco stores is left entirely in control of local councils, with the Ministry of Health only providing non-binding guidelines for the councils to follow when considering an application.
The Ministry of Health did not respond to requests for comment.
