3rd Alpen View Beer Festival (CLOSED. Thanks for support!)

Postby Neu Engollon » Sat Sep 06, 2014 8:01 am

*** This IC Thread is open for all to RP General attendees, but you must have signed up first to RP Vendors, Sponsors, Entertainers, Beverage Entrants, and Flonkers ***
The AVBF is going for 3 IC days. RP will last for 6 RL days, with each RL day equaling one half of an IC day. The beer, ales, meads, etc. categories will be judged in two batches over the first two days. The spirits/liquors will be judged on the third final day.

Dwile Flonking will be scored for 2 groups of 4 teams, with 3 matches played. Two group flonking matches the first day, a final one on the second day. The top team from each group will play for the final. The second best team from each group will play for third place. Sorry, but I don't have the IC time here, or the inclination to drag this out with extra group games or quarterfinals.

TG OP or use OOC Thread for any questions or commentary. Again, attendees aka average festival goers, there is no need to officially apply, unless you have a VIP who needs a Pavilion Box. Thank you.

WELCOME

This is your guide to the festivities and the fun making! This is the Third Annual Alpen View Beer Festival. If you hold this guide pamphlet in your hands, you are in our fair city of Burgunden, the main financial center and more importantly, the center for craft brewing in the Confederacy of Neu Engollon. It is by far, the largest city in the Confederacy, at over 14 Million in the greater Burgunden area. Also, this city happens to be the home to Burgunden Breueries, the co-main organizer and one of the main sponsors of the event. The other organizer is the Neu Engollon Ministry of Tourism and Culture, which recently saw the Ministry of Athletics split off from it to form their own Ministry. There is a lot to do at the Fest besides eat and drink, but, of course, that is the main focus. You may want to explore the rest of our peaceful, panoramic nation after the Beer Festival has ended, and there are plenty of other things to do in Burgunden if you happen to branch away from the Festival Grounds. You may find brochures and travel information on Burgunden and Neu Engollon at the Confederacy Park Box Office, Gendarme Security Station, and at the Pavilion Help Desk. Also, any questions can be directed to our friendly help staff wearing special orange vests. Enjoy yourselves, but please be safe and be respectful of others around you.

STAYING OR GETTING AROUND IN THE CITY

Some places to stay if you haven't booked a room yet in Burgunden:

* Presarius Plaza Hotel H$$$$
* The Menton H$$$$
* Destination Chateau Burgunden H$$$$
* Hotel 26 (Golden Eagle) H$$$$
* Alpha Lofts H$$$
* Collections Hotel H$$$
* Paradise Hotel H$$$
* Hayden Hotel H$$$
* Rock House & Studios H$$$
* Summervale Gardens B&B H$$
* Tell's Inn H$$
* Alpenhorn Tavern H$$
* Motel Mertach H$
* BB Hostel H$

We recommend against trying to find parking for rental cars near the Festival grounds, because besides the fact that parking will be almost non existent and pay parking lots fill up fast, laws on drunk driving are also very strict. Most of all, we want everyone to stay safe. There will be bus and metro train service throughout the night. There will be plenty of taxis, most of them provided by the St. James Cab Service. They will always be lined up outside the gates to take you back to your hotels. Also, watch for the green mini-van shuttles, as they have certain hours, but are free shuttles to many of the hotels in the premier hospitality district of Burgunden.

THE GROUNDS

Confederacy Park is almost as old as Burgunden itself. The grounds are laid out simply with the main stage and the Pavilion in the middle and the participants' tents, aid station, security station and port-a-john stations around the walls of the park enclosure. Pavilion admittance will only be for VIP guests (3rd/top floor) and special 2nd Floor ticket holders or Invited guests. Again, please utilize our friendly staff in the orange vests for directional questions.

THE BEVERAGE MAKERS

The brewers and distillers are some of the best from around the globe and have brought their craft to show off here in the backyard of Neu Engollon's premier brewing City. They have submitted a selection of their best offerings for the judging. They will also be serving most of these selections as well as many other surprise selections at their tents located throughout the grounds. Beverages will be served in various sizes, such as 3oz samplers, 8 oz or 10 oz glasses, 16 oz pints and some may even offer take home growlers, single bottles, 4-6 bottle packs, or cases. Many will also be serving examples of local cuisine and merchandise from their brewery/distillery, as well as some other alcoholic offerings. Check their tents, as pricing and menus should be posted.

THE JUDGING

The main purpose of the Beer Festival is to have a fun, friendly competition for many of the top beers and liquors from around the world. There are several Categories in which beers will be judged, with a couple categories being judged each day. Some of the categories of fiercest competition are for Pale Ales/IPAs, Lagers, Wheats, Stouts and Amber/Rye Ales. However, with the addition of liquors this year, there may be new bitterly contested territory. There are 12 breweries, distilleries and collectives competing in the AVBF this year. The judges are a panel of beverage experts gathered from around the world's most prestigious brewcraft and distillery regions.
Judging will be done through the Xkoronate 3.3 scorinator program, adapting an artistic gymnastic platform to beer categories. Bonus skill points have been given for descriptiveness, story and proper categorization, as well as booth menu and some other categories. Also, there will be RP Bonus.

ATTENDANCE

We are expecting thousands upon tens of thousands of attendees, many of them local and from across Neu Engollon and Astyria, but we will also have quite an outer-regional international presence including some celebrities and VIPs from across the globe. Tickets will be sold in group packages, Full Festival 3 Day Passes and 1 Day passes. Sales of tickets are available up through the last day of the Festival until they last and capacity is reached. Attendees are allowed to re-enter the grounds upon leaving, if their ticket is for that day, but they are subject to search again upon re-entry. A wristband will be issued for re-entry. The Pavilion has three levels. The ground level seating and second level boxes are available for sale through to the last day of the Festival, or subject to availability. Third level boxes are reserved for advance sold VIP spots only. No outside food or drink is allowed in except for sealed water bottles.

PERFORMERS

There is a wide variety of musical performers and other entertainers that will be engaging and rocking the crowd. Some are from Neu Engollon and some are from the International Community. They are listed below in no particular order of importance.

On The Arklay Main Stage:

Velociraptor Rex The premier band that ruled almost three decades from Nouvel Ecosse, and took Astyria and the world by storm. This legendary outfit has reformed over the last couple years and put out a new album to reel in some more glory and bring their thick arena rock sound to new generations.

Vechirek A lively world vibe/folk band from the Principality of Smertolina. They have played every AVBF and have a strong following among Neu Engollian folk enthusiasts and music lovers in general. They are great friends with the Alpen Volken Circle.

The Imperial Navy Band of New Zepuha A full orchestral and brass band of 60 members that will perform traditional and choir arrangements. From the Byzantine State of New Zepuha. This is their second appearance at the AVBF.

The Smertolinan Serene Orchestra and Ballet Company The name says it all. From the Principality of Smertolina. They are led by Concert Master Yanu Boysky. This is their first appearance at the AVBF.

The Canons of St. Christopher's Cathedral A monastery choir of 20 personnel. From the Principality of Smertolina. They are led by Choir Director Canon Peter Hudebnyik. This is their first appearance at the AVBF.

Zerksees Dyngus Dyngus hails from Paradystopia and is a well known musical act/character from there. Tuba solos and other rants shall emanate from the stage as Dyngus casts his magic over the crowds. By reputation alone, he may give Hoppy Jensen a run for his money.

Penguin & The Snowblowers A band from Ulil that simply plays 'music'. Not much is known about them, but we look forward to hearing some new sounds from this little heard from nation.

Alpen Volken Circle A folk group that plays traditional favorites and several styles from around Neu Engollon. They originate from Ludenthal, NE. They will be playing for the dwile flonking events in between their sets. They have returned to play the AVBF every year.

Frigid Mares A favorite act that call Panoli, Neu Engollon home, they play a rich tapestry of rock and roll that takes influences from some of the old 60's garage rock and melds indie, new wave and electro clash influences to that foundation. They have played every AVBF and hope to keep on that trend. Along with the Servonaris, they are part of the southern coastal Neu Engollian music scene that has really come up over the last few years.

The Podunkers Neu Engollon's Podunkers play a fusion of punk rock, Celtic rock and ska with some other styles blended in. They are one of the most popular musical acts in Neu Engollon and have been active as a group for 23 years. From Burgunden, they call this big brewing city home, and many of their songs are about life in the large metropolis. These guys grew up listening to V-Rex and are excited to be sharing a stage with them.

The Servonaris This band hails from San Remo, and plays a blistering set of garage and surf rock. They have developed quite a following in the southern cantons of Neu Engollon and are starting to take the center and north of the country by storm, as well as many other parts of Astyria. This is their second Festival appearance.

On The FBoNZ DJ Stage:

DJ Charovnika Plays a mix of electronic dance, dubstep and trance. She has a loyal following on both sides of the border and does Neu Engollian club tours throughout the year, although she resides in Smertolina and spins most often in Smertolina City.

DJ Goat Smasha Plays a mix of Goth dance, electronic, and Industrial re-mixes with a backdrop of some eerie videos and lights. Burgunden's own, you can often find him behind the boards at the Black Box club.

DJ Taunt Plays soul, reggae, ska and dub music, sometimes contributing his own sampled vocals and guitar stylings. From the capital, Telleursville, Geneva, NE.

Dragon Drop This eclectic and exciting woman spins every kind of music under the sun and surprises at every turn with the odd and interesting mixes she comes up with, but no matter their randomness, her mixes always seem to move the crowd to dance. She hails from Schwartzgarten, Grisbenden, NE.

IN CONCLUSION

Image

Again, welcome to the AVBF and I thank you for letting us entertain you for these three days. We are so encouraged to see so many beverage makers that honor the craft of fine brews and distilled spirits gathered in one spot and look forward to meeting all of you and strengthening ties. Also, the incredible list of entertainers promises to bring joy to the festival goers, of whom, we expect record crowds to enjoy the fest this year.
Finally, we hope that the International delegations in attendance find inspiration and make new bonds that will further global cooperation and industry.

The Toft Family and Neu Engollon are happy to have you here in our large, bustling city in our proud Confederacy, in the grand region that we call home, Astyria.

Sincerely,
Franz Toft
Minister of Tourism and Culture, The Confederacy of Neu Engollon

Dwile Flonking Competition

Postby Neu Engollon » Sat Sep 06, 2014 8:03 am

Bien-Welk! (Welcome!) This is the first ever dwile flonking competition held in companion to the Alpen View Beer Festival. You might also consider it the Second Edition of the Potty of Ale Tournament, as it is taking the mantle over from there to continue on the great tradition of flonking.

Dwile Flonking is a game in which teams compete against each other for a trophy, called the 'Gazunder'. One team dances to music in a circle, while a competing player, the 'flonker', from the other team uses a pole, called a 'driveller', to pull out the ale soaked, filthy rag, or 'dwile', from the bucket or pot of beer/ale. The dwile is then flung at one of the circled, dancing members of the other team. If he/she misses, or commits a 'swadge', the flonker must drink from a smaller pot or big mug, also called the 'potty', draining the potty before the 'girters', the circled opponents, can pass the dwile a full complete circle. Sometimes running is involved, with the flonker needing to complete laps before the dwile completes a circle. A 'Jobanowl' calls out direction changes to the girters, who must change the direction of their dancing march or face point penalties. Music is usually provided by a folk band traditionally, but a DJ can substitute. The match goes for four 'snurds', like a baseball inning. The teams alternate flonking and girting with each team completing two snurds where they cycle through their roster of flonkers while the other team serves as girters. Team with the most points wins. In many cases, its the team with the most members still sober enough to stand. Another version of the rules, courtesy of Apox again.

As stated in the OP of the General AVBF, this will be a simple tournament, with a quick group stage, final and third place matches based largely on RP for bonus. Exactly half the nations participating were in the original Potty of Ale, and half are new to the sport.

You may post rosters again here in the IC thread and any RP. Not only is this the Everything thread for the Dwile Flonking Competition portion of the AVBF, but it is the Everything Thread for the whole Festival, so there will be attendee, fan, entertainer and vendor RPs and menus interspersed in this thread as well. In order to get RP bonus, you must actually RP your dwile flonking team. If you've entered the Festival for multiple participating levels, for instance: A flonking team and a brewer - You can not have any brewery tent RP count doubly for both flonking and beverage judging. It also vice versa for brewery/distillery judging, if you do happen to be an entrant. Flonking RP will not count for that.
Exceptions can be made, or if you are doing a unique story line, please put an OOC spoiler saying that you would like it to count specifically for the dwile flonking. All that being said, you can have your flonkers wander the Fest and interact with anyone, instead of strictly RPing the match.

Here are the groups:

Group A
Apox
Communadi Old Boys (Paradystopia/The Glorious Commune)
Iron Eagles (Smertolina)
The Serbian Empire

Group B
Burgunden Breus (Neu Engollon)
Jeckland
San Jose Guayabal
Wolfman's Bar (Olwe)

SCHEDULE
Sept. 7 (IC Day 1 AM): 1st Group Matches: 1v4, 2v3
Sept. 8 (IC Day 1 PM): 2nd Group Matches: 4v3, 1v2
Sept. 9 (IC Day 2 AM): 3rd Group Matches: 4v2, 3v1
Sept. 10 (IC Day 3 AM): Third Place Playoff
Sept. 11 (IC Day 3 PM): Finals Match

CUT OFF FOR RP
1200 AM US Eastern Time

(More info to follow. Stay tuned.)

Allistair's wake up knock came at 4:30 AM local time. The Summervale Gardens Bed and Breakfast staff were cheery, perhaps too cheery for this time of the day. Certainly, Allistair would prefer a much later wake up call. But today was the big day, the start of the Alpen View Beer Festival.

The president of a well known soda company, Allistair and his crew had flown in to Burgunden two nights ago. While many might find it a bit out of the ordinary to find a soda company at a beer festival, this was Allistair's big idea. His plan was to convert even a few festival-goers to the wonders of soda. His reasoning was clear; as a more family friendly beverage that shares with beer many qualities of the brew process, the handcrafted sodas offered by South Seas Soda Company could be a fun way to introduce exotic flavors to the attendees without causing them to go over the legal limit.

Allistair reserved the precarious ordeal of waking his staff for himself. “All, the time has come! We must hurry to the festival!”

A muffled protest came from behind the door of the next suite. “It is 4:35 in the morning! Have you gone completely mad? The festival doesn't start for over six hours!”

“As a vendor who needs as much assistance as possible to have success at this festival, we must set ourselves apart as much as possible,” Allistair responded. “The duty is in the details! If we are to succeed at showing the inherent similarities in the brew process, we must be one of the first to arrive.”

There was little that the crew could say. He was, after all was said and done, their boss. Some twenty five minutes later the crew, a handful of the best brewers handpicked under the South Seas Soda name, were packed into a van and on the road.

Now assured of the privacy of his surroundings, Allistair let the crew in on his little secret. “We're going to welcome the professor today,” he said in a hushed tone.

A surprised yet satisfied look came over the crew. Now it had become apparent why these select few had been chosen to attend the event. The remainder of the ride to the festival saw many eyes meet in hurried glances, but otherwise silence.

There were still a small handful of bags on the baggage carousel, having made their way around the circuit some five or six times. Most of the other bags at this Burgunden International carousel had been claimed without incident. One parcel, however, was missing.

"Great. Just great," Ezekiel uttered under his breath. He had paid a premium surcharge for the additional handling his parcel would require, as it was a vital piece to the Beacon Point Brewhouse entrant booth. And yet, it now seemed that this extra expense was in vain. The 12 foot long wooden box, packaged with incredible care and extra padding, was nowhere to be seen. "We're going to have to find the hardward store, and fast. I don't know if there is enough time! We must hurry!" he shouted out to the rest of the Beacon Point Crew.

It was likely an odd sight for the crew members to see Ezekiel so flustered. Aterall, he was generally a calm man, unfrazzled by day to day details. Twenty years ago, he had started Beacon Point Brewhouse knowing absolutely nothing about beer and pizza. Nothing, that is, except that he knew he enjoyed partaking in both of them. The details, he knew, would manifest themselves after his passion to bring the best experience to his customers. He had learned a great deal about brewing and baking that first year of operation, but always with an air of confidence. Indeed, even his motivational speaking gigs followed the theme of "Peripherals Follow Passion," an energetic appeal encouraging people to follow their dreams without worry for how each individual detail will fall into place.

But this could be a full blown crisis.

Ezekiel hurried his crew in gathering their belongings and making their way to the airport pickup zone, even prompting them to run through the terminal. There was quite a ruckus when Cyrano asked to stop at the restroom. It was a twelve hour flight from Coastal Communities, and Cyrano, apprehensive of planes and not wishing to disturb the other passengers, had not used the facilities since entering the airport at Boardwalk Beach. Ezekiel gave Cyrano an unapproving scowl. Still, what could he do? "Please hurry, Cyrano. We must find a hardware store if we are to perform well at the festival! Since our crate isn't here, we will have to rebuild it!"

It didn't help that the plane landed at the very last gate of the terminal. With such a long flight from Coastal Communities, flights were not scheduled very often, and as such incoming flights to Burgunden were not given high priority by the airline. To make matters worse, the group had already been slowed down by a smattering of some thirty to forty tourists, all decked in matching purple tee shirts, speaking a language Ezekiel could not identify, clogging the walking lanes and content to move ever so slowly. Ezekiel could not let his urgency come to a head in anger with these individuals; he knew of the importance of the Alpen View Beer Festival and how many people it would draw over the next few days. Ezekiel, though impatient at this moment, knew he may see this group again.

The Beacon Point Crew was a mere fifteen feet from the doors leading to the ten or eleven cabs waiting for hire outside when Cyrano suddenly stopped. "Wait!" he yelled.

A woman's voice was heard midsentence over the airport speakers. "....Solomon, paging Ezekiel Solomon. Will Mr. Ezekiel Solomon please make his way to airline counter? Again, Mr. Ezekiel Solomon to the airline counter."

The Beacon Point Crew made their way to the nearest airline counter. "Do you have my package?"

"Sir, what package?" came the reply from the young twentysomething behind the counter.

"I'm Ezekiel Solomon," Ezekiel stated in a rushed tone. "They just paged me. Do you have my package?"

"Sir, I'm not exactly sure what package you mean. First of all, I need you to just calm down a bit and we will try to find the person who paged you," an obviously well-rehearsed line came from the attendant.

Ezekiel's unedited reply showed his frustration. "For the love of all things holy, its a ten foot wooden lighthouse. How do you not know what package I am looking for? I swear, the incompetence of..."

The attendant cut Ezekiel off mid sentence. "Oh! You are the lighthouse people!" And then, without skipping a beat, the attendant added, "Carolyn, this gentleman is here for the lighthouse!"

Carolyn, the manager on duty, came to escort the group to the back storeroom. There, the busted up wooden crate sat, with a red paper attached to it. In large print, the sign read "Inspected by Burgunden International Airport Security." Below the print was a line and an illegible signature. The wooden lighthouse, a key prop in the branding for the Beacon Point Brewhouse booth, was largely undamaged, save for a three inch gash on one of the sides.

"We apologize for any inconvenience Mr. Solomon. Due to the size of your package, airport security took the prerogative to open it."

The gash aside, Ezekiel was relieved. He knew that branding would play a huge role in setting the Beacon Point booth apart from the crowd. He motioned to Cyrano for assistance in lifting the lighthouse, and they made their way towards the door.

"Sir, the crate?..."came a questioning remark from the airline manager.

"Keep it!" was Ezekiel's only response, coming from five feet already outside the office.

A few minutes later and the crew was in a few cabs--Ezekiel, Cyrano, and the lighthouse in a van-sized cab, and the remainder of the crew split between two other cars.

For the first time since landing in Neu Engollon, a smile came to Ezekiel's face. "Driver, to Confederacy Park please!"

Apricot Harbor Ale

Coast Range Raspberry Wheat
Coast Range Raspberry is a wheat beer with reddish copper tones, a white head, and a prevailing haze. Its aroma is mainly fruity red raspberry, which is also the authoritative flavor as well. Before dawn at the fairground, the Smertolinan workers were setting up the last parts of the Iron Eagle and Culture and Tourism tents. Minister Hansel Smertsky, Iron Eagle CEO Tomas Grabovsky, Cathedral Brewmaster Udo Borya, and chef Barich Krolicky supervised the work personally. All except for Smertsky also exchanged pleasantries and chatted with Neu Engollonan and other nations' workers setting up their own booths.

Trade Minister Pavel Boyar walked up, balding, with rectangular glasses and his hands in his coat pockets. "What an ungodly hour. Haven't you guys ever heard of delegating? You can tell your people what you want them to do and correct it in the morning. You guys are as bad as Martina." Smertolina's monarch Princess was notorious for micromanaging.

Baron Smertsky glared at him in shock. The tall, broad-shouldered, well-dressed Minister of Culture and Tourism was movie-star handsome but for a scar up his left cheek. Even at this hour, not a single red hair was out of place. "Are you joking about the time? Since when do you wake up this early? And if we direct the setup ourselves, nothing has to be corrected."

"I don't get up this early," Boyar responded. "I haven't been to bed yet. Volf and I went out drinking, checking out the nightlife. Well, some of the nightlife checked him out and left me on my own, so I figured I'd come see how setup was going, before I go to bed for a few hours." Handsome Foreign Minister Peter Volf rarely had trouble making new friends.

Father Borya, with long black hair and long black hooded habit, said "Actually, it's been perfect for a lovely change. The last couple of fests, we were surprised by details of the setup when we arrived on site, so we wanted to make sure of everything. Thank the Lord, everything's perfect.

He added, "Now, don't oversleep, Sir Pavel. You don't want to miss anything."

Chef Krolicky, a tall, fat, mountain of a man, also with long black hair, said "Normally I'd stay longer to show solidarity with the setup people, but I'm going to have a lot of cooking to do. A few hours in the hotel bed before crazy time sounds good, so I'm leaving with you, Sir Pavel. Goodnight, everybody."

Smertsky said "If you're certain you can be trusted to get here on time, Pavel, would you please extract Sir Peter from whomever he's with and bring him as well?"
Smertolina is a landlocked, mountainous, forested, Slavic-Germanic nation. It is ruled by a mostly-benevolent fascist monarch (my old "City of Villains" supervillain) and does not represent my real-world views.

Postby Romberg » Sat Sep 06, 2014 10:08 pm

It has been the fifth day that the Rombergians had returned to Neu Engollon. Having met with success and awe last time with their over-the-top stall and discounts, they were back again for more. And this time, they were ready to take it to a whole new level.

Supervising the operation was Graf Håkon Tserdynov von Sturmhåll. Relatively young for his position in nobility - having received the distinction from the previous Kaiser not long before his passing, he was a decorated soldier who had fought in several wars, and was thus accordingly granted the honour of becoming a Count by the time he was 30. Now, just several years on, and having considered to be one of the most promising candidates for the next leader of the nation, he had surprisingly quite the military, where he was most adept in, but instead chose to enter civil service as a diplomat. Starting off, it was decided that government would assign him safer jobs, such as the AVBF, which was known to not have too big an impact on foreign relations.

With only several days to set up, the planned stall was already built in sections back in Romberg. Having discussed with the Nikolian government beforehand, this stall would be jointly planned with them, and a mixture of construction workers from both nations were used, although everything was done in Romberg. Now, the full scale of the project could be seen. Taking inspiration from the previous years' stall, a ground relief of both nations were done in papier-mache, and they were the centrepieces of each stall, although each would then furnish and build it to their own style. In the middle though, was a man-made river 50cm deep. There, lower-quality beer would flow continuously thanks to a pump system, and this represented the sea that separated both nations. It was a massive undertaking, but one of the few ways the Rombergians thought could top the previous year given that pyrotechnics were not allowed.

Like the previous year, on the Rombergian side drinks and food were sold on different sides of the stall, although customers were free to mingle on both sides. Notably though, prices have not changed despite inflation, and it was still cheap - thanks to heavy subsidies from the Rombergian government in advertising for AVBF.

Once again, new entrants were given a passport to introduce them to the Rombergian stall:

Contents of the passport:

The cover looked rather similar to a real Rombergian passport, black in colour, and with the words "Passport to the Imperial Realm of Romberg" instead of "The Imperial Realm of Romberg". The coat of arms on the passport too was different, with a full pint of beer replacing the central shield, half-drunk to have the division as in the shield of the real coat of arms.

This was then followed by a contents page.

After that, there were numerous pages introducing Romberg, and its culture to the reader. It starts with a map of Romberg in relation to the world, and its basic outline, including population, area, GDP and other information. This was then followed by a brief introduction to the government, economy and the history of Romberg. And after that, there was a brief list of basic phrases in Nordisch, the unique but rarely-used official of Romberg, which was followed by a detailed map of Romberg proper. Following this map was an overview of Rombergian culture, focusing on its cuisine and drinks, especially alcohol, as well as an introduction to the various tourist attractions in Romberg and its varied geography and climate.

With the official portion now over, the rest of the passport would be devoted to the beer festival, providing a menu and introduction to the items being sold in the Rombergian tent.

Food:

German style pretzels, NS$ 1.00 per pretzel

Authentic German sausages, NS$ 1.00 per sausage. Extra NS$ 0.50 for hotdog.

Swedish meatballs, NS$ 1.00 for 5

Assorted smoked fish and meats, NS$ 3.00 for a tasting selection

Assorted pickles, NS$ 0.75 for a tasting selection. Includes picked herring.

Borshch, NS$ 1.00. Follows the traditional Russian recipe.

Caviar selection, NS$ 5.00 for a tasting selection. (OOC:low price, but so is the quantity offered.)

And finally, only for the period of 11.30-1.30 and 6.00-9.00,

Today's Special, NS$ 7.00 per dish. Freshly caught fish from the Arctic waters off Romberg or the best joints of game freshly hunted from the wilderness of Romberg, cooked and served in the style of Rombergian home cooking. (OOC: A main course item only served during mealtimes.)

Alcoholic Products

All sold for NS$ 5.00, per pint for beers & mead, 3 shots for vodka, 2 glasses for whiskey.

Imperial Lager (Lagers) - A traditional Lager using an old Bavarian formula, it is one of the stronger beers of the Principality, having a 7.5% alcohol content. Brewed with pristine water from the Ålberg range and locally grown hops, this golden-coloured brew has a mild flavour with a frosty aftertaste thanks to its hops, which are subjected to below-zero temperatures in the winter. A Rombergian favourite, but due to its relatively high alcohol content for beers, the Rombergian Ale has been more popular in recent years.

Rombergian Ale (Pale Ales) - A complement to the Imperial Lager, it is a lighter variant of the beers produced in the Principality, having a 3% alcohol content. Again produced with the spring water from the Ålberg range and locally grown hops, this light-yellow brew has a refreshing taste with a mountain berry flavour that would bring you straight into the mountainous forests of central Romberg. Currently the bestselling alcoholic drink in the whole of Romberg.

Reichtenberger Whiskey - Scotland has its own highlands, and Romberg too has its Reichtenberg highlands. Using only malt grown in these highlands, Reichtenberger Whiskey follows a Scottish recipe with several changes, producing a 40% alcohol content brew. Having been brewed in locally cut Oak barrels, Reichtenberger has a distinctive woody flavour along with the fragrance found in normal whiskey, and what is special is its frosty aftertaste due to natural chill filtration in the sub-zero temperatures during winter.

Pavlovo Vodka - Brought to the Principality by Russian immigrants, Pavlovo Vodka is brewed from potatoes grown in the Principality of Romberg, brewed and distilled to a 40% alcohol content. While Pavlovo Vodka has relatively little taste and odour compared to other brews in the Principality, even a small amount would keep one warm, and it has been the drink of choice of Northern residents during the long, cold winter. Pavlovo Vodka is also very suitable for mixing into cocktails.

Nord Mead (Meads) - Some have said that the recipe to make Nord Mead had been introduced by Viking raids on Romberg. Others have said that the recipe was a product brought to Romberg by Nords from Skyrim, arriving in Romberg through a rift in space and time according to the common myth, their legacy still felt nowadays. Either way, following the ancient recipe passed along from generation to generation, Nord Mead is brewed using honey and has a 10% alcohol content. Nord Mead is extremely refreshing and cooling again due to freeze treatment, but also rather sweet due to its sugar content. What is distinctive about Nord Mead is its taste, of wild berries grown in the central mountains, because all honey is collected from hives situated in the area.

Non-alcoholic Drinks

Ålberg water - Using the cleanest water from the snow-capped Ålberg range, the mineral-rich water is refreshing and thirst-quenching. NS$ 1.00 per half-litre bottle.

Mixed Berry Juice - The most popular non-alcoholic drink for Rombergians, this juice is made of wild berries harvested from the Central mountains and the forests surrounding it. It is mildly sour and rather sweet, providing a delightful accompaniment for breakfast, and a healthy alternative to alcohol. NS$ 2.00 per glass.

In addition, additional items such as berries from Romberg and freshly made German-style bread were also available, as well as frozen fish and meats, including sausages, all sold in a separate section of the Rombergian tent as souvenirs.

On the other page directly following food, the alcohol menu was presented.

The Iron Eagle Beverage Company tent is identified by its logo:
Image

The inside of the tent contains kegs, tanks, serving glasses, and bottles of other beverages. As the distributor of beverages produced not only by itself but also St. Christopher's Cathedral and the Royal Smertolinsky Farms, Iron Eagle is selling all of the beverages from Smertolina. A poster reads "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
The menu reads:

IRON EAGLE BEERS ENTERED IN COMPETITION:

All Smertolinan brewing begins with Smertolina’s famously soft spring water

Although our commercially produced beers are now made in modern stainless steel tanks, small batches made for tastings like this one are still made the old-fashioned way, in wooden barrels in the brewery’s cellar.

Shadow Valley Pilsner: Golden, with a small, firm, white head, this beer opens with a slight, crisp bite of bitter hoppiness and ends with a lightly malty, almost slightly sweet finish. This is the small-batch version of Iron Eagle’s most popular commercially produced beer. 2-time AVBF Gold Medal Winner.

Blood of the Invader Red Ale: Ruby-red, with a hoppy, fruity, plum-like aroma, a smooth, malty body and a dry finish. Named for the many battles, victories, and losses throughout Smertolina's history. Gold Medal Winner, AVBF2; Silver Medal, AVBF1

Both beers: 3oz Samples - H$1. 8oz 1/2 pint glasses - H$3. 12oz glass - H$4. 16oz pints - H$5.5. 64oz growler - H$17

BEERS PRODUCED BY THE CANONS OF ST. CHRISTOPHER'S CATHEDRAL:

Bishop’s Supper Bock: Brown with an enormous, expansive white head, this has a mouth-filling malty, buttery flavor described as being like drinking fresh-baked bread. 2-time AVBF Gold Medal Winner, very popular at previous Fests: 3oz Samples - H$2. 8oz 1/2 pint glasses - H$4. 16oz pints - H$6.25. 64oz growler - H$20.

St. Christopher’s Catacombs Premium Stout: As black as paint with a brown head, this barrel-aged stout is richly earthy, smoky, peaty and just slightly sweet, with a long-lingering smoky finish so earthy some have described it as being almost like drinking a fine cigar or pipe tobacco. Gold Medal Winner, AVBF2; Silver Medal, AVBF1: 3oz H$3, 12oz H$7, no growlers

MEAD:

Slivameda Plum Mead: Honey from Royal Smertolinsky Farms' beehives (noted for its floral and herbal tones) is fermented with a combination of sweet and tart plum species to produce a fruit mead that is crisp rather than cloying: 3oz tasting H$2, 8oz glass H$4, 750ml bottle H$15

LIQUORS:

Ice Princess winter grain vodka. Produced according to the traditional recipe, dating from when only the aristocracy was allowed to make vodka. Crystal Eagle Vodka: A "modern traditional standard" potato-based vodka aiming for purity and clarity, quadruple-distilled and filtered through charcoal, silver and quartz. The bottle is sculpted as a stylized eagle: 1.5oz shot H$1.5, 750ml bottle H$20. A special commemorative eagle-shaped bottle made of smoky, iridescent Duhasky crystal is available for H$200

Orli Shlivovino plum wine. An asian-style sweet plum liqeur. The label shows a painting of the green mountain valley of Royal Smertolinsky Farms: 3oz tasting H$2, 8oz glass H$4, 750ml bottle H$11

Opoyeny Absinty; Franco-Suisse style distilled absinthe, with natural green herbal coloring, aged in settling tanks. In addition to standard herbs, a special recipe of additional herbs including mountain wildflowers and cannabis. Licorice and herb flavor, with floral tones and a pungency from the cannabis. 72% ABV, contains thujone and cannabis. The label shows a painting of a green-skinned nymph wearing only dark green Victorian stockings and shoes. Popular at previous Fests: Serving of reservoir glass with 1.5oz absinthe plus water and sugar H$3, 750ml bottle H$30

FLAVORED MALT LIQUOR:

Absintola: Inspired by the Royal Smertolinsky Farms' unique absinthe recipe, this licorice-&-herb flavored fortified malt beverage is pearlescent green, and contains absinthium (wormwood) and cannabis extract. The label displays a scantily-clad cartoon green fairy. 12% ABV, 24oz - H$3
"Stock your next party with Absintola! It makes the green fairy's clothes come off!"

WATER:

Valley of Shadow Spring Water 16oz - H$1

Valley of Health Naturally Carbonated Mineral Water 16oz - H$1

Fear No Evil Caffeinated Water. Popular on "the morning after" with hung over patrons at previous Beer Fests. 16oz - H$1

SODA:

Citronola: Caramel-based cola with a twist of lemon, lime and grapefruit flavoring. Less sweet and more tart than most caramel-based colas, with more caffeine. The label displays a cartoon Black Eagle Mascot. 16oz - H$1

Sour Plum: A tart, plum-flavored soda with a label showing a frowning green cartoon plum. 16oz - H$1

SMERTOLINA MINISTRY OF CULTURE AND TOURISM TENT

Image

FOOD SERVICE BY THE SMERTOLINA DAIRY FARMER'S GUILD

The Culture & Tourism tent contained displays of the snow-covered mountain slopes, green pastoral valleys, lush forests, medieval and baroque buildings, casinos, hot springs resorts, ski resorts, churches and castles of the Principality of Smertolina. An interactive display showcased Smertolinan folk music, Slavic neo-pagan festivals, symphonies, operas and ballets, and programs from Smertolinan television, with the more violent and sexual ones edited somewhat. Advertised were the museums of the city of Cristofslazny, and St. Christopher's Cathedral and its environs.

Posters and displays showed the elaborate art & architecture of St. Christopher's Cathedral and its surrounding sprawl of collonaded gardens & buildings. The city of Cristofslazny consists mostly of light-colored medieval & baroque buildings not more than 5 or 6 stories tall, and the skyline is dominated by the huge, dark stone towers, buttresses and green copper domes of St. Christopher's.

The pictures show that, inside and out, the cathedral is adorned with statuary depicting martyrs, saints, angels and allegorical figures, chief among them a muscular wolf-headed man holding the Christ-child on his shoulder. Modern western Protestants often found surprising the sensual nudity with which allegorical virtues, muses, pagan gods and female-bodied angels were depicted.

Special attention was given to Smertolina's casinos, which range from friendly neighborhood medieval pubs still playing historical card & dice games, to the lavish Palatz-Cassino, an 18th-century palace converted into a luxury resort whose games include baccarat and video slots. Palatz-Cassino has 3 theaters: a showroom for celebrities or touring acts; a variety show with comedy acts, burlesque, and nude showgirls; and "Opereta", a surreal stage show based around an erotic opera, with ballet, experimental orchestra music, and death-defying acrobatics.

Video displays showed popular television programs produced by Signal Rider Media, which has a logo of, on a galloping horse, a bugler in a black, red and white Napoleonic uniform. The screens show safely edited versions of shows that, the literature advises, are violently and sexually explicit in Smertolina. They are available for export in either form.

"Hearts in Shadow" is a prime-time soap opera, in which the young, attractive, decadent heirs of the Voivoda family scheme and seduce to take and keep control of the family's various businesses. Set largely in the sprawling, atmospheric, lavishly furnished castle complex of Yirihrad.

"Blood and Honor" is a Napoleonic epic, in which the various Slavic and Germanic nobles of central Europe are too busy with their machinations against one another to unite effectively against the seemingly infinite armies of the Gallic Empire. Ballroom dances, duels and graphically violent battles.

"Holy Sword". In this medieval fantasy, Prince Vlad Smertolinsky and his fellow Knights of Christ defend Smertolina from invading armies and various supernatural menaces of folklore, often by being even more psychopathically violent than the bad guys. Lots of galloping through forests.

"Star Mission". Science fiction. The space battle carrier "Peacebringer" travels from system to system, defending the sector and righting wrongs. The crew is accompanied by a small contingent of mystic warrior monks and nuns given superhuman abilities by a force called "The Vector". The athletic, attractive crew wear skintight performance-gear uniforms, the monks apparently don't vow chastity, female aliens are often played by actresses in little or nothing more than prosthetic makeup and bodypaint, and the brash young captain seems to have a personal mission of trying to sleep with every female in the galaxy. Episode plots are often thinly-veiled commentary on current issues. (Bizarrely, in recent surveys thousands of Smertolinans now list their religion as "Vectorism".)

FOOD MENU:

Smertolinan Kilbasa: Large beef & pork sausage made with herbs & garlic, partially boiled in beer and finished on a grill, served with grilled onions. Available condiments include Dijon mustard, sweet brown mustard, spicy paprika mustard, and dense, flavorful Smertolinan sour cream. - H$4

Fresh-Baked Barm Bread: Bread baked with ale barm instead of baker's yeast, served with a large slab of butter, or used as a bun for the kilbasa. -H$1

Potato Pirozhy: Dumplings filled with potato seasoned with black pepper & paprika - H$2

Dessert Pirozhy: Dumplings filled with plum jelly. - H$1

Fried Cheese: Soft, spicy Smertolinan "Korensky" cheese, pickled in onion, garlic & peppers, then breaded and fried. - H$3

The tent also offers plates of a wide variety of cheeses for tasting, at H$6 for a selection of half a dozen, with suggestions for which cheeses might best complement different kinds of beers.

CONFEDERACY PARK
BURGUNDEN

David Toft made it to the Confederacy Park Grounds at 7:40 AM and still was not one of the first to arrive, but he wouldn't expect as much. Both the contract and temp workers from the Ministry of Tourism & Culture, and crews from Burgunden Breuerie had been working hard at setting up the grounds for well over a week. Trucks had rolled in and out for days. Now, they had been joined by crews from all the major breweries and food vendors who were in a flurry to turn the bases set up and tents into full booths for tomorrow. He had been on the phone or computer constantly it seemed, and spent almost no time with his family and it was wearing on him. They all knew this was coming and it was something that all Burgunden got in a fervor for every year. Much as he would enjoy it, he was already looking forward to an end.
Yesterday NETA, the Neu Engollon Travel Authority empowered by the Ministries of Tourism and Culture and Justice, had been shouting at him over the phone about a giant lighthouse turned up at Burgunden International that they suspected to be a terrorist device. He calmed them down, having some idea of who it might belong to, but it took some time. It was all part of the job.

David Toft had a coffee in his hand, but he almost wished he had a Valley cigarette in the other, even though he had quit several years ago. He nodded to the gate guards and box office staff as he trotted up the walkway and was ushered in with a cursory flash of his ID. Now he would meet face to face many of the brewery folks that he had been in touch with over phone, video and email for weeks. Some would be old faces, and some would be brand new ones. He had not been in the brewing industry as long, hoping for a medical career at one point, but family had brought him back in. His father had not been taking the stress as well, and on top of running Burgunden Breueries, he and Uncle Franz were also keeping BDI going and all its numerous subsidiaries and partnerships. It was too much. He had eased into the job of organizer last year gladly, as he knew it would maybe add another year back on to his father's life. Really, the pay off was that he got to meet wonderful people in the industry and bring joy to many thousands, so it was worth it.

"Hello, Ceri! How we doing today?" He said with a smile as he looked out onto the grounds to see the last touches happening to the pavilion and the stage. The Burgunden Breu booth already seemed to be ready to go.

"Oh, Mr. Toft! Great! Busy."

"Of course. Any messages?"

"Yes, well, Minister Smertsky and Mr. Grabovsky are here from Smertolina and Iron Eagle. They left a message to stop by their tent when you got a chance. Same with Ezekiel Solomon from Beacon Point, Allistair Houghton from South Seas Soda, Graf von Sturmhåll from Rombergian and..."

"And on and on..." David smiled at her momentary pause, "That's ok, Ceri. I will be stopping by to see them all. I'm sure they all want to have a word."

"Well, all but the Omholt's folks. I think they just grunted when they ran in."

"Ah, well, at least they're here. Couldn't be that butthurt if they keep showing up every year, right? No worries. Any news from outside the grounds?"

"Your father will be by later today, and same with your Uncle Franz and Cousin Kristof to help out and coordinate."

"Ugh...Not about Franz and Kristof, but my father just needs to relax about this. I told him I had it handled. Accorzu...Dankmerz, Ceri."

"Ya, Velkoma." She waved, then turned back to her computer.

David carried on through to head to the tents, but was stopped cold by the next voice he heard.

"Get yer fudgy scrugged, crabby stubs movin'!! Git thee to tha flonking ground, cozzfickin' orange nipples!"

"HOPPY!! I thought we had this talk. You are already starting in on visitors?! Do I have to lock you in a room until tomorrow?"

"Aw, hey Davish! Naw! This is der team...Fer de flonkin'. Ya know? Trainin'. We gitta train, yer know?"

"Right. Fine. Just keep it down. Don't train here, on the grounds, Hoppy. Head out to the flonking pitches that are set up."

"Er, sure, but...We don' wan' dem oder teams to see no stratergojjin'."

"Go! Out of my sight!"

Hoppy gave an exaggerated bow. "At yer servin'."

"Stop callin' them orange nipples."

"Yazzir!" The funky, scraggly man that was half beard shouted over his shoulder.
David continued on, first coming up on the Iron Eagle tent to greet them.

As the day drew to a close, David, along with his Uncle and cousins and other Burgunden Breu and BDI officials made sure that everything was in place and all the metaphorical fires were put out. They managed to scoot his father, Jan Toft, home, nudging him back to his car and into the door, and motioning for his driver, Rolf, to take off.

The next day, everything was glistening and shiny as the hour approached for the start of the fest. Crowds waited on the sidewalks outside the gates, ready to hurry in and get some of the tastes of the rarer batches that brewers and distillers had on hand. Music was piped all over the grounds from the FBoNZ DJ Stage, as well as emanating from the speakers next to it, spun courtesy of DJ Taunt. It was a lively mix of reggae, rocksteady and soul. The tune he played currently, a Maytals number, had many of the servers swaying as they set up their stations.

Speaking of servers, a new addition was the Arklay Airways and Air Londsdale flight attendants taking over the top floor of the pavilion to serve the VIPs in their boxes. When they had found out two days ago, there had been almost a near riot among the veteran domestic servers that had worked their way to the top floor. That prime real estate provided the best server gigs in Burgunden, with the mad amount of tips some servers earned each fest, they were able to take a nice holiday. David Toft had pulled them into the box office and had a quick conference. They walked out with a nice bonus promised for their checks and satisfied, if not happy faces. Still, there was bound to be a bit of hostility between the two groups as they would be working from the same Pavilion bars and utilizing the same runners to get special beers from exhibitor booths, but David and his staff would keep an eye on things. In his mind, it was better than dealing with the next fiasco Hoppy Jensen might create.

There was a last few minutes check around to make sure that all the booths were ready, and then the gates opened and people came in with shouts after passing through security. In just a few minutes, The Minister of Tourism and Culture, then the BB crew would take turns making quick speeches.

Thenvir Alakar stood around, smiling broadly at all and sundry as his staff set up their banana stand. They had arrived a bit later than they'd intended, their large banana-laden truck convoy having been waylaid repeatedly by customs officials as they made their way north from Panoli, but now that they were here at the Festival things couldn't have been going better. Alakar turned to smile at his personal assistant, Moi'riz Parsya, whose return smile was not quite so overpowering.

"It is wonderful to finally be here, isn't it Moi'riz?" Finally, thought Alakar, a chance to actually show the people of Neu Engollon the virtues of the banana! He was the CEO of the IPEBA, the Imperial Potassium Export Bureau of Asketon, and he relished every opportunity to advertise the only fruit he truly had a passion for - not passionfruit, he mentally reminded himself. That one confused him sometimes.

Parsya did not entirely share Alakar's enthusiasm; he was of course a banana fan, but the repeated searches by Neu Engollon's overzealous gendarmarie had gotten to him. "I suppose so, sir. We don't seem particularly popular with the people here, though."

Alakar looked confused for a moment. "Ah, yes, the searching," he remembered. "I know you hated that. Still, it is reassuring that they have so much concern for the well-being of our fruit. And whatever you might say about their fondness for us, they certainly seem to love bananas! Look at this wonderful spot they've given us!" He positively beamed as Parsya groaned.

"Sir, it's a terrible spot," he complained, trying - no doubt in vain - to correct his boss. Alakar was notoriously difficult to sway where bananas were involved. "We're right next to the toilets, and we're behind the stages."

"But that is all to our advantage! People have to use the toilets, so they'll all see our wonderful display of potassium. And people in front of the stage will see us behind it, and think 'I wonder what they're selling?' Once they come over, they will be unable to resist the lure of heaven-sent fruit!"

Oh Thaera, he had a point. It wasn't exactly the most powerful argument, but it held up. You could almost see how he'd secured those massive state grants. Parsya almost wanted to let him carry on with this delusion, but no. He had to save Alakar. He gave it another go.

"But sir, they're toilets," he said, earnestly. Alakar just looked at him, not comprehending, smile still plastered over his face.

"Yes?"

"And this is a beer fest." A thrilled shiver suddenly ran through Parsya. He'd hit gold with this realisation. Gold! he thought to himself, and had another revelation. "People get drunk, they need to use the toilets."

"Of course they do." Alakar nodded. "I do, too. Not now. Sometimes."

Parsya ignored that. "They may need to, ehm, relieve themselves, or maybe they need to vomit. Either way, the smell..."

"Oh," remarked Alakar.

"Yes," Parsya replied.

"Um." The willpower fuelling the smile began to fade.

"I did say we weren't popular with the people here," Parsya commented. "I'd be surprised if it didn't have something to do with the Panoli incident."

The smile disappeared. "Ah," said Alakar, "that." And there it was - sense had returned to the IPEBA's CEO.

"Still, as you say, sir, we can make the best of this situation." Parsya hadn't become a PA without knowing how to stay on his boss' good side. Slowly lead him back to sanity, and the gratitude would -

"I must speak to the organisers!" Alakar suddenly declared. "This is a grave insult to the banana and the Trellinese people!"

Oh no; it was going again. It was almost irretrievable. "No, no, not that, wait!" Parsya desperately pleaded, but it was too late now. Alakar had marched off to find an organiser. Resigning himself to the next three days with one almighty sigh, Moi'riz Parsya ran after his employer.

"Now that looks great!"

Grinning from ear to ear, Natasha admired the work her people had put into making most of the huge, once-empty tent. From the entrance, marked walkways meandered through galleries, cabin mock-ups, and various other displays designed to promote Arklay Airways and Air Londsdale. Soft lighting, greenery, and water features provided a quiet, relaxing environment. A mockup of the airline's lounge occupied the center of the area and was open to anyone wanting some down time before returning to the loud, boisterous activity outside.

As she literally fawned over the perfection of everything, her thoughts were interrupted by a grumbling voice.

"Thanks a lot. Your trolley-dollies just had to come and take our jobs, eh?"

"E..excuse me?"

"You heard me. You waltz in with your people and take the VIP section for yourselves."

Confused, Natasha tries to sincerely look the man in the eye. "I'm sorry, but what are you talking about?"

Sensing some sort of hostility towards his boss from the angry man, a buff guard takes position behind Natasha. "Everything ok here, Nash?"

"Yeah, Kyle..." Turning back to the man, she invites him inside the tent to explain himself. Once seated on one of the plush couches, he explains his grievances.

"Y'see, me and my people were supposed to be handling that area. Two days ago, we were told that your people would be in charge instead. We've been taking care of the VIPs year after year and we're just not comfortable with outsiders treading on our territory."

"I'm really sorry. We didn't know we were taking anyone's place, especially not after there was no resistance when we proposed to serve."

"Yeah, yeah. Anyway, we got a fat check out of it...," the man mutters.

After a few moments of silence, Natasha thinks of a way to stop the hostility. "Tell me, how many of you were supposed to be working the VIP section?"

"Why?"

"Just...tell me, please?"

"Twenty..."

"Would it be alright if you call them all here?"

"I don't think that would be a good idea. Some of those guys are still upset."

"It's ok. I need to speak with everyone."

"Suit yourself, ma'am. I hope you know what you're doing..."

A few minutes later, a stream of upset servers entered the Arklay Airways tent. Noticing the looks on their faces, Kyle decides to call for backup just in case things get out of hand. A tense 20 minutes pass before the servers exit the tent. Happy.

"Thank you so much Miss Ashcroft! This means so much to us and our families," squeals one of the female servers.

Nash follows the group outside, beaming. "It's the least I can do for pushing you guys out of your place."

"I...I don't know if I can accept this. This is too much," says another one on the verge of tears.

"Please. You deserve this. You all deserve this."

Hugs and smiles follow before the group walks away from the tent and a beaming Nash.

"Uhmmm. Mind telling me what happened in there, Nash," says Kyle as his backup looks on, relieved that Kyle's worst-case scenario didn't play out.

"Let's just say those guys are gonna have a great time after this festival. Now you stay here while I go look for Mr. Toft. Help yourself to some food and drinks inside if you want."

In her heels and dress, Nash walks flawlessly to the VIP section on top of the Millennium Pavilion. Spotting the man she was looking for, she called out to him.

"Mr. Toft! Hello! Can I talk to you for a moment...?"

Manager of the watch Gilifred Meerchent stood proudly out front of his booth, wearing his short apron over his black slacks and white uniform shirt. Proudly wearing the company logo, a large man wearing traditional lederhosen. He was proud to be representing the proud food makers of New Zepuha with the best of fair and carnival foods! "Come and excite your taste buds ladies and gentlemen! At Big Als House of Munch, a meal you will not soon forget!"

With that he inhaled and smelled the fresh scent of pickles being sliced and prepped for frying. The sizzling oil crackled behind him spitting out a sweet song of taste. Forgetting something he walked around the booth and uncovered a box and set it out on the front of the table and set out a tag. "Have a smoke! Complimentary Cigarillos courtesy of Gold Crowne Tobacco!" he patted the box and opened the box to reveal the finely wrapped cigars. Catching notice of his fellow Zepuhan doing the same over at the bank stand....

At the South Seas Soda Company tent, there had some amount of buzz early from festival-goers. They were drawn, undoubtedly, by the large brewing kettle sitting smack dab in the center of the tent, polished to a nice shine. One can imagaine their disappointment when it was discovered that this tent was not brewing any alcoholic beverage, instead focusing on drinks of a softer variety. As quickly as the attendees came, so too they moved on, looking to get a buzz from other vendors and entrants.

Allistair was unfazed by the current state of the events, and remained optimistic. He knew the early going would be difficult, as people came for the beer. "Ours is a second half game," he assured his crew. "Once people have had their fill of beer and are looking for a less potent drink, ours will fly out of the refrigerator." Allistair knew the draw of the economics as well. At just $1NS per sixteen ounce bottle, the price was roughly a fifth of the price of a pint of beer. "Once the pocketbooks start running dry," he thought to himself, "the festival will be ours."

Within a few minutes time, one of the South Seas Soda crew had returned from a break in the pavilion, scoping out the offerings at each of the booths. "Aren't you concerned about the other vendors offering soda," he questioned of Allistair. "There are a small handful who have them."

"Not at all, Julian. In fact, I am quite encouraged by this development. Remember the end goal. We didn't come here to sell tons of soda; one individual sale is just that—one and done. No, there is much greater notoriety in changing the game."

"I'm not sure what you mean by that," Julian remarked. "Aren't sales the point of any business?" One of South Seas Soda's most accomplished soda brewers, his business acumen was still being developed.

"My friend," Allistair replied, "some of the best brewers in the world come to this festival, and it is attended by thousands of individuals. There is tremendous exposure to this event. If we can only crack the brotherhood of beer drinkers and help the festival realize the importance of brews of all kinds, we in turn will reap much greater profits."

"Seems like a lost cause to me," came Julian's terse reply. "This is a beer festival."

"I knew this year's festival was a lost cause in terms of sales when I signed up for it. We are playing for next year. With any hope, we can turn the good turnout of soda brewers into a category for next year's event. From there, our sheer variety of brewed soda will overpower the competition. We'll have an excellent chance at placing on the medal stand if sodas get included in subsequent events."

Julian nodded an understanding assent.

"First we must get past the nomenclature of the event," Allistair continued. "How does Alpen View BREW Festival sound to you? Now, if you'll excuse me, I must make my rounds to infiltrate the masses."

CONFEDERACY PARK
THE FIRST MORNING

The folks poured into the grounds and ran to their favorite booths, or ones that they'd been so anxious to try.
It was then that an odd sight came about. One of many that would happen over that weekend. A frail, ancient old man wearing laderhosen, a Tyrolean hat and with a shirt that seemed two sizes too big for his frame scooted out towards the ground area in front of the stage. Following behind, from the direction of the East gate was a group of men carrying an enormous Alpen horn.

From the other direction, came Franz Toft, Minister of Tourism and Culture, at least for the next few months. An assistant was beside him carrying a beat up old crate and a bullhorn. Behind him, his brother was led by the wives of the two brothers. He seemed to be in a bit of pain, but nothing had been released to the press lately about an ailment of one of the most sucessful businessmen in Neu Engollon, Jan Toft.

Finally, from a third direction, from what looked to be like the Arklay Airways booth, came the vibrant son of Jan, David Toft. The main organizer of the Fest.

The crate was set up by the assistant quite unceremoniously. It wasn't the best option, but it was tradition and it tended to demand attention by its simplicity. The Tofts were just as comfortable leading the charge from the streets as they were seats in offices of power. The assistant handed the bullhorn to Minister Toft. Jan leaned on the counter of the corner of the Pavilion, and some of the BB staff quietly mouthed hello to him and waved, he smiled and gave a thumbs up back.

"Accorzu! Hello people! I love you early birds. So, I will keep this short and sweet. There is a lot of news to cover, and a few people that would like to talk. You saw my little blurb in the welcome packet, that's really all. Welcome, welcome to all of you. We're very glad you're here...And by us I mean the Confederacy, The Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Burgunden Breueries, all the other sponsors, each one of them very dear and well deserving...and finally, the Toft family. I would like to ask that we all take a moment of silence for those in Azmir today, in Trellin. Where the volcano is making their lives difficult, if not ending them. The Confederacy is doing what we can in the International effort to aide Trellin and the effected areas. Also, due to Mt. Rocky Koko...? No? Anyway, due to the volcano, some folks have not been able to make it here...yet. I hope that will change soon.
Also, we will have that moment of silence for lives lost in the recent plane crashes and in Lorecia, Agrincourt, Insula Fera and across the globe. We give thanks that we can take some brevity in our lives when some aren't so fortunate. So, silence Now..."

Minister Toft, along with his family and assistant bowed his head. There was silence, but for the distant sounds of Burgunden traffic outside the gates.

After a good space, he spoke up again, clearing his throat,
"...Thank you. Jan?" There was a moment more as Jan moved up to take the bullhorn.

"Thank you Franz. My brother Franz, everyone. Round of applause. Accorzu...As some of you know already, I am stepping down as CEO of Burgunden Breueries, and giving the helm to David, my son. It has been some time coming and I will be able to focus on my BDI duties, and some health concerns. I will retain the Presidency, but it is more ceremonious. It's been a pleasure to work with all of you. David has been confirmed by the board and has now been running most official duties for a bit of time now. Even if he wasn't my son, I would still know of no other one that could do the job like him. Please, welcome the new CEO of BB...David Toft."

"Thank you. Thank you. I will carry on the traditions as we all know have been a good foundation for one of the oldest institutions in the Confederacy. I have been taught well, and I think we will see even bigger horizons for the company. I look especially forward to working with all of you, my fellow mavens in the craft beverage industry, whether you be making spirits, beer or soda. So, on with the show, eh? So many people have made this happen. I'm glad this gets bigger and better every year. This is our Uncle Hans, folks..." He pointed over to the old man in laderhosen that was now behind the horn, held up by two hefty assistants. "He will be blowing the Alpen Horn, which is a tradition to start off the Fest. Then...The march. Hans?"

The man took a deep breath, then coughed, bending over like he was going to hurl, but was helped back up to standing by a staffer. He smiled, then puckered his lips.
"BAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!"

By the time he was done, his face had turned an interesting shade of purple. Birds took flight, from their spots at the top of the pavilion roof and the stage. It seemed that time even traffic outside the gates had stopped.

Then, after some applause and laughter, music kicked in. 'Yakety Sax', then clown music and other carnival-esque type tunes, played by DJ Taunt from the FBoNZ DJ booth. A line came in through the West gate, actual clowns, some more shabby, some more colorful, some outright weird...wearing toilet seats, pants on their head, shirts on their legs. A line of people in bathing suits that were painted all over their bodies in primary colors. There were actual bums following, too, promised a brief stay and one free drink in the grounds, they had gladly joined the procession. They all danced around, grabbing spectators and bystanders and dancing with them, spinning around, slapping butts...

Hoppy Jensen, Captain of the BB Flonking team, as well as Head MasterBrewer, ran up to the gate upon hearing the music, a strange cherry glow to him.
"Yer ferkin' gob chopper diddly ponkztah poopin..." It was a string of non-sensibility, with cuss words thrown in liberally. He hated the March of the Madcaps, always...He started to trot, then pick up the pace as he got ready to grab some of the revelers and wrestle them to the ground.

David Toft was ready. He motioned to a beefy man, a former rugby player and soldier that was on the staff, waiting by the line of booths near the Brewvarian Brews booth. The man took a stride and cleaned Hoppy's clock as he came level with him, then dived on him in a rugby style tackle.

"Ah mah Gawd, I'm ginna die!! Yer fudgy pantsed arse lemur! Doddlin'...nutbutt...Aggghhh! Lemme go, ya big rhino!!"

David smiled. It would be a good day. Round one to him.

As the Festival opened to the public, Smertolinan visitors were among the first and most eager to try this year's offerings of exquisite beers and liquors. Most of the pale-eyed folk were dressed casually, but some in military uniforms, dress or fatigue, and some in Smertolinan traditional festive wear, black and red embroidered vests and leather pants, with some women in bodices and skirts.
As the March of the Madcaps got underway, some of the more adventurous Smertolinans joined in, shouting, joking around, slapping bottoms, and pulling more bashful festival goers into the spreading madness.

Among them were, of course, the musicians of "Vechirek", in their punked-out versions of Smertolinan folk dress, portions replaced with torn fishnet and topped with humorous lapel buttons. Several had hair dyed colors found only in flowers, birds, and tropical fish. Lead singer and guitar/oud/sitar player Darius Valchak, with long black hair, goatee, arched eyebrows and wicked grin, was juggling clear acrylic balls and rotating them around his hands.

He approached several attractive women in turn, proffering the balls and saying, "Miss, would you like to play with my...?"
A stone-faced Austrog girl stared at him, then turned and walked away. A buxom Romagnan girl giggled, saying "Oh, no, no, no! No, no, no. I am married!" One Smertolinan girl laughed and kissed him on the cheek. Another slugged him.

Allistair took a brief stroll through the pavillion, scoping out the soda competition and, subsequently, his greatest allies in the field. It was easy enough to note the soda selections from the menus posted at the booths. As Allistair passed by Big Al's, two cola options appeared, though they sounded like typical cola offerings. A couple of other booths offered some interesting options. When he strolled by the Beacon Point Brewhouse menu, Allistair thought to himself, "I'll have to try their root beer and see how it compares." Of the soda offerings he saw, Allistair was most intrigued by Iron Eagle's options. Among the smattering of fruit based sodas, Allistair spotted one that had a lot of promise—the Citronola. He made a mental note to make sure and stop by to sample one a little later in the festival.

But for now, Allistair turned his attention back to the South Seas Soda tent. "The time has come," he mentioned to his crew. "Let's take the brew kettle for a spin."

The crew could easily take over operation from here. They had performed this process hundreds of times, perfecting their craft by tweaking recipes until each flavor was perfect. But today was a bit different. This would be a first public run at a large festival. The stakes were a bit higher here than in the soda brewery back home.

"Julian, let's be sure to get the almond ratio correct this time. Charlotte, get ready the vanilla and anise." Allistair went into game mode, giving out orders as familiar reminders of his time as the head flavor guru of the company, and bringing out 140 years worth of family experience.

Soon, the kettle was filled and more and more ingredients added at different times. The aroma of the fresh brew started to overflow into the general audience, and a small crowd, atune that something was a bit astir in the South Seas Soda tent, started to slowly congregate. "25 flavors, everybody, 25 flavors in this one brew. And you will be the first outside of our company to taste it!"

But like any great brew process, what was needed was a bit of time. Slowly the heat was added, and at carefully timed intervals, so too were the ingredients. A little nutmeg here, some caramel there, and plenty of ingredients unidentified to the crowd at other times.

With the kettle now going and the crowd's attention not only piqued but also diverted to the crew's happenings with the brew's happenings, Allistair quietly slid to the front of the booth. In his hand was an additional sign to add to the menu already hung. On the sign was written:

Image
On Tap: Introducing the first public release of PROFESSOR PELE
25 flavors in every taste

This wonderful flavor was lost for over a century to our company.
Now, with the recipe recently discovered in a long lost journal penned by our founder,
it makes its spectacular re-introduction into our portfolio, a special treat for this festival!
