Suppose it's like that because there exists nice thread games that they made that are able to stay alive for a considerably long time, and aren't really likely to end up fading away on the last pages of F7 until it reaches 500 pages, but in which case it will probably get a new iteration of aforementioned thread. Even a few of the lower quality ones do get constant bumps when they end up on the last pages, which I believe has allowed for the sustenance of this phenomenon.

On another topic about moderation, I have to say, isn't it pretty funny when some mate acting like a total cunt and being an arsehole to everyone ends up crying to the mods when someone fires back? They can dish it out, but can't take it, huh?

That's their objective. Get people to flip out at them so they can report it. Such posters don't tend to last long, though.

What's funnier is when somebody very obviously broke the rules, gets acted upon by moderation, and subsequently initiates a campaign against moderators infringing upon their right to free speech.

(and further subsequently learning how hard such attempts get shut down by other posters saying 'this is a private site, if you don't like it, don't come here')

Sure seems that way. Normally I'd be neutral to such behaviors as I don't like drama but behavior like that is utterly ridiculous.

Harassing everyone only to get a mod involved when someone calls you out for it/fights back is literally the worst.

Why is it nonsense? Is 'ultra-annoying idiot' too 'tame'? It was an attack on the poster on a personal level, and so it broke the rules. If a poster cannot stop themselves from calling somebody names on this site, they should learn to step away from the computer.

This in itself is a cliche: people grousing that the mods are overly zealous in enforcing the rules. I've seen that over and over again. It is nothing new, and nothing changes.
