As mentioned in the bid, tiebreaks during the pool stages will be H2H, points difference, points for, IC coin flip (highest rp bonus).

Schedule

Cut-offs will be between at the first available opportunity after 23:00 UTC+1 except on Sundays1 where the cut-off will be five hours earlier at 18:00 UTC+1. Please use include the following RP permissions at the bottom of your roster. As all of the matches will be taking place in cities across Britonisea, if you would like to godmode events that happen in each of the grounds or in the local area, please shoot me a discord #brityuniksreich or a telegram and I will get in touch with you.

As part of the RP permissions, you can include your style modifier too. You can choose any number between -5 and +5. If you give your team a +5 style modifier, this means that they have a more offensive/attacking style of play (more likely to go for it for the tries). If you give them a -5 style modifier, they have a more defensive style of play (more focus on reducing the number of tries the other team makes). 0 is the middle-ground and will be given to any team that does not specify a preference.

Additional Information

If you have any questions or have spotted a mistake, please message me on the OOC thread, telegram me or send me a DM on discord where I am a bit more active (#brityuniksreich). I will definitely get back to you. The same goes for wanting to know more about Britonisea or specific cities your players will be in. Let me know, I'm open! For questions about cutoffs, it's best to shoot me a discord message. The only thing I ask in return is patience and kindness.

Bonus points will be given out to teams that score more than 33 points or more, or if a team loses by no more than 7 points. In the small chance that a team has scored 33 points or more and lost by no more than 7 points, only one bonus point will be given out.

Introduction: Britonisea

Image
Map of Britonisea with all major motorways...
(Note: the town "Swithique" is where Burgendore is on the map, and Burgendore in reality is on the opposite side of Ghiez on the island)

The United Republic of Britonisea is located in the Northern hemisphere of the Novapax on the Terra Centurium continent and is home to 62 million people (including Aloquirbe). Britonisea is a diverse, modern and innovative nation, with excellent technological advancement, and sustainability and ranks highly as a nation with high equality. Britonisea has many different climates due to its geographical position and its ultra-high mountainous zone which stretches down the middle of the nation known as “the spine of Britonisea”. While the nation experiences a wide range of different temperatures and climates, the major cities are usually located in places that have a temperate climate in the south, while a continental climate is major in the north.

The nation has particular interests in its Arts and Culture sector - with a vibrant film and television industry which it prides itself on, an endless array of museums and exhibition halls for people to attend and an explosive music scene which has been recognised throughout the multiverse. The nation has a major interest in sports, too. Despite this, the nation has not attempted to host or even participate in many international competitions, resigning itself to national and regional competitions with a long term goal to one day jump onto the international scene - a goal which has not yet been realised. The nation, however, has all the right facilities to host events of large scale and magnitude - with the 37th Rugby Union World Cup another fantastic edition.

Quick Facts about Britonisea
  1. The currency is the Brito Pound Sterling (£): The Britons will say '1 Brito' when referring to money, with 100 pence making 1 Brito. The currency rate is $1.68 NSD = £1 BPS.
  2. The capital city is Doportedas, which is the most populous city: While Doportedas is the capital and home to over 6 million people, Telm City is the largest city by space and was the former capital of Britonisea. Telm has just over 5 million people.
Languages: English is the official and most used language in Britonisea, but Britonish and French are also widely spoken. Britonish is spoken in the east more, while in the west French is spoken more. There's about 15-20 million Britonish speakers in Britonisea with most knowing basic phrases while there's over 6 million French speakers in the west.
  3. Britonisea drives on the left: Britonisea, alongside Aloquirbe and Estogium, all drives on the left handside of the road - this goes for railways too.
  4. The timezone is +0: The timezone that Britonisea is in is UTC - Britonisea is on Terra Centurium which is known as the continent that is considered in the centre of the map.
  5. Eighteen is your number: The minimum age for most things is 18 in Britonisea - the full age of consent, alcohol purchases, cigarettes etc. Drugs are strictly banned in Britonisea which adopts a no-tolerance to such things, including marijuana.
  6. The emergency number is triple 7: If you ever have an issue in Britonisea, just dial 777 and you'll be put through to the police, fire department or ambulance.

Throughout the tournament, eight cities will be hosting matches in nine venues. Below, you can find out more about each of the cities and more information about the venues.

RUWC37: The Host Cities & Venues

Britonisea is home to fantastic cities with widely accessible transport not only inside each city but also from one city to the next. As previously mentioned, the Rugby World Cup will be hosted in eight of Britonisea’s finest cities and below you will be able to find out much more about each and every one of them…

Doportedas [Capital City]
Population: 6.34 million
Venues: Saintlake Stadium (72,000) & Lukas Brito Stadium (60,000)

Image

Doportedas (pronounced Du'por-ti-das) is the capital city of Britonisea, home to just over six million people within its urban area making it the most populous city in the country. Doportedas, similarly to boroughs other cities may have, is split into ten different zones, with smaller local authorities within them - each of which has a population between 130,000 to 250,000 people. Doportedas is also the capital city of its Authority (which is on a similar level to a county or province), which was recently renamed to Dopor in order to avoid confusion with the city and the state. The Dopor Authority is by far the largest one, with over 9 million people residing there - that's a staggering 14% of the Britonish population. Doportedas is served by fantastic transport. For teams that don't have an immediate connection to Britonisea, which is unlikely due to Britonisea's extensive globalisation, using different mediums, you're able to get to Doportedas via Darkmania, South Batoko and Aenglide, while other regional nations such as Mercedini, Togonistan and Estogium providing reliable and frequent routes to the capital city. Going through the different types of travel, Doportedas is home to not one, not two but three international airports - Aeroporte (pronounced Arrow-port), Olympia Airport and Deghnby Airport but the latter is a much longer ride into the city than the other two options - but it might save you some money. Regardless of which airport you come to, both are fantastically served by ARD and National Rail services. If, for whatever reason, you decide to fly in using an airport outside of Doportedas (perhaps it was cheaper, perhaps your act wanted to check out a different city and have a Britonish road trip), Doportedas is very well connected to the rest of the country with it being a major hub on the Britonish Circular Route meaning you can virtually take a train to any (major) location in the country for a reasonable price. Some of the major stations in the city include Aysledwire International (pronounced Asul-dwire) which is the nearest grand station to Olympia Airport, you've got Centreon Station which is right in the heart of the city and also Juke Royal Station which serves international destinations such as Aloquirbe and Taeseon but is also a connection to St Kings Bay. You can find out where these are located on the city on the Doportedas Metro map - which has over 300 stations.

Image

The Saintlake Stadium is one of Britonisea’s largest stadiums and second largest in the city. With a capacity of 72,000 people, the Saintlake Stadium is the home of Britonish rugby and so it was a no-brainer that matches would be hosted in this highly prestigious venue. Saintlake has had a lot of media attention recently after its hosting of the Saintlake Regatta which took place along the banks of the lake. The Saintlake Stadium is also along those banks - with fantastic views especially at night. Imagine those late-night shots from the sky! The stadium has its own station on the metro. The Lukas Brito Stadium is named after one Britonisea’s finest leaders. The stadium is located inside the Doportedas Sports Park and can hold up to 60,000 people. Constructed in 1960, it was initially the centrepiece of the Sports Park and the initial home of Britonish rugby until Saintlake Stadium was constructed in the mid-noughties. The Lukas Brito Stadium

Telm City
Population: 5.06 million
Venues: Stadium Strata (80,000)

Image

Telm City is a wonderful city along the eastern coast of Britonisea. Telm City is the former capital city of Britonisea, but remains the capital city of the Authority of Telm, which includes the cities of North Telm, South Telm, Cappehnyaden and of course Telm City itself. The city boasts a population of 5,060,021 people living within the 11 boroughs. With a size just reaching 1,000 square miles, Telm City is the largest city in Britonisea, but this fact might turn you away from coming here. Despite being huge, Telm City has been well equipped will all of the things that you will need to get around the city without a hitch. The company that deals with transport in Telm City, Telm Transport Transit (TTT), has been working in the whole Authority for over 400 years, making it easy to not only travel around the city but to different parts of the Authority that we would love for you to visit on your journey to Telm City. For both trains and buses, there are a few lines that will take you around the whole system, lines which are called those trains “The Interlinks” - a separate system to the TTT but you can transfer from one system to another usually in the same buildings.

Only one stadium will host rugby world cup events in Telm. Telm is home to Stadium Strata, located in the borough of Strata which it gets its name from, regularly hosts World Cup qualifiers and is the largest football-specific stadium in the country. It is also the home to the Britonish national football team. Despite it being a football stadium and as Telm City’s largest stadium, it will be hosting matches for the upcoming rugby world cup! You can find a map of Telm City here where Strata has been mentioned.

Aloquirbe City [Capital of Aloquirbe]
Population: 2 million
Venues: Aloquirbe City Stadium (56,000)

Image

Aloquirbe is the semi-independent nation that is just to the west of Doportedas. The whole country is home to around 5 million people, with Aloquirbe City as its capital and Alosable as the second largest city with just under 900,000 people. Separated by Rwhitton Bay, you could see the outline of Aloquirbe City if you stand on the westernmost point of Doportedas, the capital of Britonisea. Aloquirbe City, when added together with the cities in the rest of Britonisea is the fifth largest city and it sure is a bustling one. As it's on the same stretch of water as Doportedas, it is just as busy with it being a major trading port for the rest of Aloquirbe’s cities, as well as a major international passenger port too. You can get to Aloquirbe in many different ways. You are able to fly to Aloquirbe, who’s airport is on the other side of the city (to avoid being too close to Doportedas’ airports), you could head to Doportedas and then take the underground ARD or road services to Aloquirbe or you could take a ferry - while the travel times are a little slower than if you were to take an underwater train, the fare is cheap and the ferry leaves the port very often. You can buy tickets at the port itself or online. Aloquirbe City hosting matches means that for those in the south west of Britonisea (and specifically those living in eastern Aloquirbe and Doportedas), they are treated to three stadiums within an hour of each other with City Stadium being relatively close to Saintlake Stadium and Lukas Brito Stadium.

With a capacity of 56,000 seats, the Aloquirbe City Stadium is the largest in the country. To those in Aloquirbe, the stadium is home to some of its major events and has a wealth of history and memories to the Aloquirbic. Aloquirbe City Stadium was first constructed over a hundred years ago, closing in 1997 for renovations, where the arch was added and a cut was made in the side of the arena to make it look stunning - a real centrepiece of the Aloquirbe City skyline. It opened just in time for the 2000 millennium celebrations.
Quickenden
Population: 2.76 million
Venues: Greenock Stadium (53,000)

Image

Quickenden is the third-largest city in the country in terms of population after Doportedas and Telm City - with 2.8 million residing within city limits. Quickenden is a major hub for business and trade. As the city is quite large in terms of size, you certainly won't be short of things to do. Firstly, within the Quickenden Authority (confusingly the Authority or "State" is also called Quickenden, with the main urban area usually being referred to the City by natives from the Authority), there are two other cities that you can explore; Aronyk and Jyske - with the latter of the two laying alongside the Britonisea Bay, home to one of the country's largest ports for the fishing industry. Aronyk is a bit closer to Quickenden - 45 minutes - and is a relatively new city, still being built up. Aronyk regularly hosts matches at the World Cup qualifiers and the World Hit Festival and so despite it being a rather young city, there's a lot going on. If you'd like a nice and quiet private beach, Aronyk is the perfect place for you. Though, if you prefer to stay within City limits, why don't have a little stroll along the city's many shopping districts - you can shop 'till you drop in Quickenden, with the fresh and urban apparel making it a hotspot for young fashion, but if you're a tad older, we can find you something to wear that will make you feel 20 again! Quickenden has a big sports scene, being home to the National Athletics Centre which has hosted a leg of the NS Athletics Tour. Another Tour that Quickenden is involved in is the NationStates Tennis Tour as the MEGA Indoor Arena has played host to the most recent NSTT Finals and is now home to a tier 1 tournament - the Quickenden Masters which welcomed 56 singles players and 32 doubles from around the multiverse. Quickenden is certainly the place to be if you want an all-rounder city that is bustling but also has a quiet and calm side to it too.

With Quickenden being such a major hub for all-things sport, a world-class venue has been chosen to host matches at the upcoming 37th Rugby Union World Cup! Greenock Stadium has never hosted international matches of any sport…until now! Though don’t let that fool you, the Greenock Stadium regularly hosts big matches due to it being home of Nationale Football Club, one of the nation’s largest and most important association football clubs. It regularly gets over 40,000 fans in the grounds with 53,230 fans being able to fit inside the Greenock Stadium at full capacity. As was seen as the Quickenden Masters, sports fans will have no problems buying tickets until stadiums are full and with Quickenden being such a major sports hub (behind Luton & Sports City), rugby players from across the multivers will fall in love with Quickenden’s charm.

Luton & Sports City
Population: 1.026 million
Venues: Starside Stadium (52,500)

Usually grouped together, the combined population of Luton and Sports City is just over 1 million people. Luton & Sports City is the name of a conurbation in the south-west of the country which consists of Luton, a medium-sized city alongside Sports City, a relatively newly built city which is home to a wide number of arenas and stadiums that are home to a lot of the sporting institutes in the country. Luton and Sports City, being in the south of Britonisea, is one of the warmest locations on the map, so fans will be able to enjoy great temperatures and summer-vibes despite it getting closer to winter. Luton & Sports City regularly hosts events across the country and we thought that it would be the perfect location for the Rugby World Cup. Luton is by a rocky shore but there are still spectacular views of the area. Luton is a largely residential city and not as visited as the likes of Doportedas, Telm and Quickenden, with a couple of nice spots where teammates and fans can chill - a few central areas with shopping districts. Luton and Sports City is served by Luton Airport - a small sized airport with just over 4 million visitors per year. Travelling to Luton by road is the easiest way in as it is expected that most nations are connected to Doportedas which is not too far away. Luton is also on the Britonish circular route and served by regular rail services. Similarly to Quickenden, Luton - by virtue of being next to Sports City - is home to a sporty population and despite only representing a mere 1.5% of the population, the city is overrepresented at the Games of the XVIII Olympiad with over 4.25% of the delegation coming from Luton. Luton and Sports City is also home to the University of Sport so one can expect a relatively young audience at matches hosted in Luton & Sports City.

The Starside Stadium will host matches at the rugby union world cup. With a capacity of 52,000 people, it is the second largest stadium in the well-renowned Stadium Row. Stadium Row is the name of the main thoroughfare the runs down the centre of Sports City that contains stadiums and arenas galore. It’s similar to an Olympic park, but different in the way that each stadium is intertwined with high street shops and restaurants you’d find in a normal shopping mall. The great thing about Stadium Row is that the event will be in this contained bubble with local shops and other sporting venues getting involved in the action, which will make the Rugby World Cup feel like the Olympics!

Burgendore [Isle Harmondsworth]
Population: 1.32 million
Venues: Stade Bastion (42,400)

Image

Isle Harmondsworth. You haven’t heard of it, have you? What if I mentioned Burgendore and Ghiez - those are the two major urban areas that are on Isle Harmondsworth (also colloquially called Ghiezland as Ghiez used to be the most populated city on the island). Isle Harmondsworth is the most populated of Britonisea’s offshore islands, with a grand total of 2.8 million people living on the one island - its the second largest in terms of size. The island is known for the two cities which is located on it - Burgendore (home to 1.3 million people within city limits) and Ghiez (home to 596,000 people in city limits) while the rest of the population lives in the Isle’s lush green forestry and mountainous rural areas.

Burgendore, the largest but the youngest of the two cities, has history hosting fantastic events. Burgendore hosted group stage matches of the Mercedini-lead World Cup of Hockey 46 in it’s Burgen Arena as well as host the 43rd World Hit Festival. It was also the main city to host the IBA Wintersports Championships so the city knows how to host large-scale tournaments. Burgendore, however, is one of the northernmost cities in the whole country and in complete contrast to Luton & Sports City, there is currently a chill in the air. Expect temperatures in single figures and low teens if you’re lucky. You can travel into Burgendore via the Burgendore International Airport or the much larger Harmondsworth International in Ghiez.

While Stade Bastion is not the largest stadium in the city (the DEXTER Burgendore Stadium is), the Bastion has a capacity of over 42,000 people and so is only a couple thousand smaller than that of the Burgendore Stadium. Stade Bastion, or The Bastion as it is colloquially called, was chosen as it is a rugby stadium and home to team Bastion Burgendore - one of the best teams in the V’Uniioneleague -the pan ABEN rugby union premiership.

Eaux City
Population: 1.32 million
Venues: Winter Stadium (55,200)

Image

Eaux City, named after the fact that it by water (on the sea), is the nation’s sixth biggest city with a population of 1.7 million people within its city limits. Eaux City does not attract that much attention but is a respectable city with all the necessary facilities to host an event such as the Rugby World Cup. Home to families of miners and fishermen and women, Eaux City is home to a hardworking population that has historically provided a lot for the rest of the country, especially the north where the city is located. Compared to the other cities listed, the pace of life is much slower in Eaux. While it is expected, teams have been encouraged to hire private transport because while Eaux City’s transport is reliable, its not as frequent as the transport in Doportedas, Quickenden and Telm City. Gales International Airport is a medium-small sized airport with 18,000 passengers going through it every day. That is only a fraction of Doportedas’ 204,000 passengers that it receives in its two biggest airports combined. Similarly to Luton, the city is largely a residential one with, admittedly, not much going on...but perhaps teams would like to go for a fishing retreat between their matches!

The city will come to life when the Winter Stadium hosts matches at the Rugby World Cup. The Winter Stadium will be slightly upgraded to hold a capacity of 55,200 people and is the largest stadium in the whole city. It is a multipurpose stadium with a running track around it - that will be all removed with a brand new pitch being laid just for the World Cup.

Boscombard
Population: 630,000
Venues: Stade Bombardier (46,730)

Image

The final city on the list is Boscombard. Home to 630,000 people within city limits, it is the 19th largest urban area in Britonisea and the smallest city that will be hosting the tournament. Britonish cities tend to be located alongside the sea due to the spine of Britonisea which rips down the centre of the country. Boscombard is different though and is located in-land - there’s no water in sight! When Boscombard was announced as a host city, there was shock amongst the population that it was chosen over Junterapten, Alshkan, Kyvivre and Machievelihe - bigger cities that weren’t chosen. Boscombard does not have an airport, so fans will have to travel to Kyvivre International in Kyvivre and take the motorway to get to Boscombard. The city is not connected to the Britonish Circular (train) route so will need to go via Kyvivre to get to Boscombard. Described as the middle of nowhere, Boscombard will have a completely different vibe to the other cities that are hosting the tournament. One thing that is great about Boscombard is that it is home to brilliant views. Boscombard is the city with the highest elevation above sea level and so with views of the mountains in the background, you will also be gifted with views of Britonisea for miles and miles - especially with where the stadium is located. For the team, Boscombard will be a great place to zone out and relax between matches. Boscombard is known for being a place where Britons head to for a bit of R&R.

Rugby Bombardier is the third best rugby team in Britonisea and they are based in Stade Bombardier which will be hosting matches of the Rugby World Cup. With a capacity of 46,730 it's one of the smaller stadiums at these year’s World Cup, but the local popular and people from Kyvivre enjoy coming to the stadium to watch their local team play rugby - they will be thrilled that that central Britonisea will also get a chance to watch some fantastic rugby.

The Royal Panayense Rugby Union presents....

Rugby is also popular but not as much in the Islands. It was introduced by the Scottish and Irish immigrants in the 1880s, same thing with football there. And the people there liked it. When the founders of Atlético Provincial saw a rugby game between the Royal University of the Islands against the University of the Federal Canton, they planned to create the first rugby team in 1896, 3 years after the foundation of the team. And some other clubs followed on and is still a following cult and a popular sport at the same time. It has a rugby competition that has divided in 2 tiers. The founding club, Atlético Provincial is still dominating the whole rugby scene, even though other teams won the rugby competition.

THE EDSMON JETS

Edsmontik is home to many things- Modesich, Xetric, and Sports. Lots, and lots of Sports.
But Rugby Union isn't exactly one of them.
Which is why this, might just be the hardest thing they'll ever come across.
Ask any modern Edsmon: They'll be garuntee to have no knowledge unless they play for a small amateur team or are a parent or friend of one.
No one is prepared for what's about to happen, so let's play it out and hope the results go well.

The CARU hopes that this occasion will help spark interest and aid in the development of this great sport within Calgasian society.
Rugby is not the most popular sport in Calgasia, where association football dominates. Aquatic sports (water polo, rowing, canoeing, swimming) and winter sports, especially alpine skiing, are also very popular. However, rugby football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation, mostly played at universities. Both men and women play together.

37th Rugby World Cup, Britonisea
Hanalia Squad Announcement

The Hanalian Rugby Union is pleased to announce their squad for the upcoming World Cup being held in Britonisea. This being the first international tournament for Hanalia, all players will be earning their first international caps when they take to the field. Rugby union in Hanalia is by far the preferred code of the game and enjoys widespread support and participation across the nation. There are numerous clubs right across the country but the rugby heartlands are in the north of Hanalia. Generally speaking Hanalian rugby is a defensive affair with (relatively) agile forwards shutting down space rather than going for the big hits. The fly-half (no. 10) is the preferred goal kicker in the Hanalian style of the game.

Match schedule Apologies if this is inaccurate, it's my first time

Godmod injuries to my players: Y

Look, don't dish it out if you wouldn't take it!
I'd appreciate some pre-warning/discussion if you're gonna RP something beyond what you'd reasonably expect in a rugby match

COMMONWEALTH OF BAKER PARK
RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION

Image

Honors
Rugby World Cup 36 Champions
Atlantian Oceania Rugby Sevens Champion (x2)

The Commonwealth of Baker Park Rugby Union was founded in February 1954; it consolidated the governing authority that individual state unions held over sport since the turn of the century.

Currently, the CRU organizes the country's domestic club national championship, the Montieth Shield, as well as the Westerly Challenge Cup, open to all professional and amateur clubs.

Rugby was popular in the first decade after the founding of the Commonwealth; as American-style football grew in participation, rugby clubs saw a decrease in the number of registered players at established clubs. Into the 1920's, rugby saw their decreasing numbers level off and by 1931 there was a renewed interest in the game in certain areas of the country. Towns and boroughs with significant Welsh and Scottish populations led the way as rugby made inroads on the number of young men who took up active sports club memberships. The Ezra Rugby Football Union (ERFU) and the Endover Rugby Union (ERU) had far more clubs competing than their counterparts in the Baker Park Rugby Federation (BPRF), Osheana Ruby Union (ORU), and the Rugby Union of Lynchana, Midalia and St Leon (RULMS); the first Challenge Cup was organized by the ERFU in 1929, inviting any club in the Commonwealth playing the union code to participate. Endborough City RFC won the inaugural trophy, and over the next 19 editions from 1930-53, Ezran or Endoveran clubs were champions on 14 occasions.

There had never been a unified convention of the various state bodies until Sylvester Montieth, Chief Secretary of the ERFU, proposed a meeting in the winter of 1953. He wanted to find some common ground between the state organizations in order to work on increasing participation and a possible fully national body to help with technical development of players. His proposal for the formation of a Union made up of all the state level competitions was unanimously approved at the Frazier House Hotel in Hamilton, which marked the beginning of the CRU.

The national club championship was established in 1956 with a structure of two 8 team divisions with promotion and relegation playoffs, 3 years later it was expanded to 10 teams each; it was known as the Frazier Shield until 1970, when it was renamed for Sylvester Montieth, who had been elected the first Chairman of the CRU and served until 1960.

The influence that the ERFU had over the sport even after the formation of the CRU can still be seen today; the national team's shirts are Navy Blue & Gray hoops, which were adapted from the shirts worn by Ezra's most successful club, Middletown Old Boys (now Middletown RFC), originally made up of ex-students from the University of Ezra branch, whose colors were also the same; the legend of the university's adopting the colors is rooted in the story that quite a few men who had been members of the Army regiment also known The Blues & Grays were among the earliest enrolled students at UE/Middletown.

Barnitz Stadium in the city has hosted more international test rugby matches than any other ground in the country, and more recently the final day of competition for the first two Atlantian Oceania Rugby 7's Championships, in which Baker Park claimed the title on both occasions.

Style Mod--+1.5
As a rule, Baker Park sports trend towards aggressive, offense oriented play; the average fan wants to see scoring, although they are savvy enough to recognize an action packed defensive stalemate is also worthy of respect. In real rugby terms, most clubs are back oriented in attack.

Nickname(s)--there is no single consensus between the BlueGrays, Blues & Grays or Hoops as a preference (even 'Grays & Blues' wouldn't be problematic although historically inaccurate--see above).

** Ryan Caldwell and Darren Slade are the main kicking specialists and Rodney Sinclair off the bench if either of them are subbed off **
The Commonwealth of Baker Park Rugby Union enters a brave new world by reaching back to its past as the first family of rugby steps forward to lead the Hoops.

Dean Mazzirella succeeds Tony Danielson as Head Coach of the World Champions following in the footsteps of his father Jerry, who was National Team Coach on two separate occasions in the mid to late 1990's and early 2000's; it'll be a family affair as younger brother Dominic will join him as an assistant and cousin Kyle—the grandson of their uncle George who was also a longtime coach in the Montieth Shield—will be in the player pool.

The Blues & Grays have made a rapid ascent in the sport since their first appearance in the RWC during the 32nd edition in Copper Cuprum, from group stage exit there, to the round of 16 in Darmen, missing out on RWC 34 but reaching the quarterfinals in Baggieland before taking the title at home in the last tournament.

Now ranked 2nd in the world behind Baggieland, the squad will head to Britonisea to attempt to defend their crown against a field of 30 other nations that includes most of powers of the union code; nine players from the championship winning squad have retired from international duty, including five members that played in all four BP World Cup teams, and there will be six new starters—3 each in the pack and among the backs—as well as a new crop of players getting their first action from the substitutes bench.

The basic design of the Baker Park jersey has remained consistent since the first international match played in 1957; the late 1980's & early 90's saw narrower hoops--four blue and three gray--but a return to the traditional pattern came in 1995. White shorts and blue & gray hooped socks have remained standard over the years although the introduction of blue shorts is new for this edition, and an all-white change strip has also been the practice of the CRU (which is a nod to the "Ghost Whites" kit of the BP National Soccer Team) since the mid 1960's.

General Information

Rugby Union is one of the most (if not the most) popular team sports in Britonisea and across the rest of ABEN, with the sport being part of the compulsory sports that school children have to learn and play throughout school. Britonisea is home to many high-class rugby venues with a major rugby following thanks to the V'Unionleague - a supranational rugby union league between all ABEN nations. While Britonisea is not necessarily known as the best nation in ABEN when it comes to rugby, the nation is looking to improve its international status as a rugby nation and hopefully the tides will change. The nation is also home to many world-class venues such as the Saintlake Stadium in the capital city.

At the 36th Rugby World Cup, unfortunately, Britonisea finished last in its group. The nation, despite having medalled in the past (as part of ABEN Union), also did not qualify for the main Olympics in the rugby sevens. With a shocking last couple of events, the country has something to prove at the 37th Rugby World Cup. This time, Britonisea will be hosting the Rugby World Cup - the nation's first large-scale, senior-level, team-sport tournament. 31 other nations will travel to different cities from Aloquirbe to the very north so there is hope that the home crowd will help spur the team on to qualify to, at least, the knock-out stages.

BTVB will be in charge of broadcasting the Rugby World Cup 37 with - BITC, having complete rights to all matches.

The Britonish audience is a respectable audience who love to get out and go to events. Tickets are usually relatively cheap so nations can expect, especially for larger teams, a sold-out stadium. For Britonish matches, the crowd will be a little louder and support their team with cheers and whoops and is unlikely to boo the opposition if they have possession.

Quebec and Shingoryeo Rugby Union National Team

Nickname: Grim Reapers
Acronym: QUE
Rough IC Time: Autumn 2068
Denonym: Quebecois (Preferred), Quebecer (that's fine)
Official Supporters Group: The Bubonic Plague
Style Mod: Lowest Possible (usually -5)

Head Coach: Callum Wild Jr, 47
Lead Assistant Coach: Woo Yeon-Ah, 41

General Team Info: The smaller pie rugby world has won in the Quebecois sporting world has meant that the rugby, as a whole, has taken greater approaches to play professionally alongside other nations in the Quebecois Commonwealth, whose interest and financials allow for international travels. Most of the members of the Quebecois and the Acadianan national teams do play in the Quebecois Commonwealth Rugby SuperLeague, a 16-team league of four associations (Quebec and Shingoryeo, Quebecois Acadiana, Busoga Islands and Quebecois Sudafrique nations which have their own West Indies situation). Because of this, however, it takes greater efforts for the national team camps or schedules to be put together, and the team's cohesion will likely take years to develop over time.

Nobody knows how this group of party-loving scrubs, whose reputation at home and abroad aren't the most positive due to their well-deserved reputation, has ended up ranked sixth in the world. Really, I don't either and I have generated these bastards. Anyways, this is a much more experienced batch of Grim Reapers whose three quarterfinals appearances in the last four World Cups are enough to suggest their rough placement in the world - great defensive side with likely floor of first-round playoff appearance and ceiling of semifinals, but most likely ending up in the Quarterfinals. A fairly predictable bunch as a whole.

RUWC Team Info: Merrick-Lee Lessard once again comes back to lead Team Quebec, with former Team Quebec captain Callum Wild Jr as assistant, after another strong performance in RUWC would see them finish a quarterfinalist in Darmen, where they would push rugby powerhouse Quintessence of Dust to brink of elimination. It is, for most part, the same Team Quebec that we've come to know over the years - low-tempo, conservative and relying a lot upon their strengths in the scrum. They see the majority of its stars with Ko-orenite dual-national Saudlane Tehindin and Thierry Soonias as star forwards, while backs are pinned by the Kim brothers whose relationship is not close at all, kinda like those brothers on Oasis (band).

There are a couple of major additions and changes to the team though, most of them coming from the backs side where there have been major changes. Out of them, the most notable change would be the arrival of Leonor Valdes McInnis. Leonor, the daughter and second child of Quebecois-Kytlerian mogul GreGG Valdes McInnis, was named the surprising starter at fly half after impressing the coaches and the scouts with outstanding freshman season at the QIS level. This is also followed by the aforementioned Kim brothers being paired alongside each other as two centres, with Hokuto Brownlee taking over as the starting left wing. With a name as iconic as Hokuto himself, one can hope that the Reapers would be able to make the leap into the next stage of team development with their new speedster, whose frame is limited but speed and agility evident, on board.

Squad List:

Numbers 1 to 8 are forwards, 9 to 15 are backs. 16 to 23 are replacement players.

Quebec and Shingoryeo's five SupeRugby sides are Thunderbirds (Prince Eric, Yoseo-Manitoba), Gryphons (Nakan County, Mahan), Koreana (Songak Federal Province), Racing 70 (Joongyeong Federal Province), and Highlanders (Equinox Hill, Inteachan).

Play style
Barunian players tend to look for the gaps rather than plow through the opposition. They'll use the full width of the pitch, and will often use long passes to catch opposing players out of position. They favour a kicking game too, and will take any opportunity for a field goal. Penalty kicks are preferred over a scrum, and they'll also chase after balls kicked forward in regular play.

The Rugby Rundown
with Mohammed Wilcox

37TH RUGBY UNION WORLD CUP: INTRODUCING SOME NEW FACES

Hello everyone. My name is Mohammed Wilcox, Mo for short. You may remember me for being part of the Abanhfleft national rugby union team that won the country its first ever Rugby Union World Cup title in Baggieland. I remember it being one of the most significant title victories that our country has ever had, not just because we’d finally won the title in rugby union, but also because we did it right in front of the country that had taken us down two years previous and denied us the title in Copper Cuprum. Yeah, we didn’t really beat Baggieland in the final; they got knocked off by TJUN-ia in the semifinals if I remember correctly, but I like to believe that we still managed to get our revenge against them at the end of the day. The good thing about it all though is that, at the end of the day, we can all still sit back and acknowledge that those were two very great rugby teams indeed, even if they were a bit crazy sometimes. What else can you call the guys that took a look at the Copperite chicken sacrifice and thought that it would be a good idea to turn said sacrificed chicken into a curry dish or a tikka masala or whatever it was that they actually made? Good times, good times indeed.

Now, I’m sure that you are all wondering why I am here writing The Rugby Rundown in place of the esteemed Graham O’Doherty, and there is a simple and logical explanation for that: our good old pal Graham has retired. Yes, after being in the blogging business for over thirty years, Graham has hung up his metaphorical boots (or maybe gloves is the better metaphor; I don’t really know) and quit while he’s ahead. I also don’t really know how one can quit while ahead when it comes to the blogging game, but I’m also a literal newcomer to this business so what do I know? Well, maybe calling myself a literal newcomer to the business may be selling myself a little bit short. I am familiar with blogging; microblogging to be exact. Ever since the likes of twii.tur and cica.da exploded in popularity here in Abanhfleft, I’ve just been hooked. I can’t seem to stop sending a twii or whatever anytime and every time that I can. Some would even say that people would always know that the national team has a match about to come because I’m always going on and on about it before and after the game itself.

Now though, it’s time for me to go bigger, literally. Anyone who’s ever used either one of twii.tur and cica.da will know that those sites have a character limit. I can’t remember cica.da’s limit off the top of my head, but twii.tur has a 280-character limit now, and back in the day it was just 140 characters. I think that’s why they used to be called “microblogging” before becoming their own thing all by themselves. Well, no more character limits for me, at least none that actually matters. I’ve moved on from 240 characters to over 600,000. Or maybe it’s actually 600 million characters. These computers and websites are getting more and more advanced by the day that I can’t even begin to hope to keep up. I realize that that makes me sound like I’m much, much older than I really am, but I have to admit that I’m still astonished by the rate of progress that technology has made since I first used a smartphone. It freaks me out a little bit sometimes, and sometimes it freaks me out more than just a little bit too.

But now to the business at hand. Being a rugby pundit after my retirement is all well and good, but I’ve never really liked that part of the sport. What I mean by that is that I don’t really like being out there in front of cameras and everyone’s looking at me waiting for me to spit out my opinion on so-and-so and whatever and whomever. That’s not really my thing. Maybe that’s why I loved being on twii.tur and later on cica.da, because I can say whatever I wanted to say without worrying about looking like an absolut mug on camera. And yes, I’m aware that some of my quick and hot takes make me look even more of a mug online than if I was to ever say them in person, but I prefer it this way. And now, here I am, about to step into the shoes of one of the biggest actual rugby bloggers that the Internet has ever seen. Graham, I know you’re reading this, so I’m not going to say anything like, promise that I won’t let you down because I don’t really like making promises that I know I can’t keep. I’ll just say that I will want to pick up right where you left off.

And where did Graham leave us all off again? Oh yeah, that’s right. The 36th Rugby Union World Cup. I mean, the writing was already on the wall when it came to his impending retirement from the very business that he had established. Now, I’ve already made my feelings known about this World Cup way back when. I’ve always said that the FRU [Fleftic Rugby Union] has a tendency to run its players straight into the ground for as long as possible, sometimes for little or even no gain at all. When it works, it works, as we can all attest to during that time when we won back-to-back union world titles. But when it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out. And it didn’t work out for our Revolutionaries in Baker Park. Yes, we did dominate the group stage, but if we’re all being honest with ourselves, that group wasn’t the strongest group out there. Frankly, we expected our boys to sweep the group, and sweep the group they did. Now, there was a possibility that Alice Bay could have gotten one over us, but instead they got trounced, and by some distance as well. But after that? Well, let’s just say that Abanhfleft got exposed. Turns out we’re nothing but flat-track bullies, smashing our group stage opponents to kingdom come but unable to come up with the goods as soon as some actual opposition comes around, which was the case when we had to go up against Hannasea. Now, to be fair, no one was really expecting us to smash Hannasea, but at the same time we were the favorites going into that match, which makes the fact that they were leading us 16-0 at half-time all the more astonishing. And you’re telling me that this offense of ours could only muster up two penalties in all of the second half?! Get out of here with that bullshit! (pardon my Nova Calanian)

Now what was the point that I was trying to make again? Oh yes, the fact that the FRU really likes to run their national pool players straight into the ground and sometimes deeper for as long as we have the legs to stand up and the hands to carry the rock. You can actually see it in the squads that the FRU has sent out to the World Cup in recent years. There would be years in which you can count the players in the squad that are 25 years old and below on one hand, and literally every single one of our starting fifteen is at least 30 years old. Ask me how I know. No one’s asking? Well, allow me to answer myself anyway: it’s because I was there. I was there as the 25-year old “youngster,” and I was there as the 30-plus “veteran” whose experience was too valuable to be dropped or whatever other reason the FRU likes to give whenever someone actually has the balls to call them out on their policy of hanging on to too many old farts. And I’ve already said this before as a pundit, but I’ll say it again, this time as a blogger: this is stifling the development of our younger players on the international stage. Sure, it’s all fine and dandy letting the young’uns take to the field in the Premiership and the Rugby Coalition, but when it comes to international matches, nope, let the old guys take care of business. And then they wonder why the “next generation” can’t handle business?

Things still haven’t changed for the better for the coming Rugby Union World Cup, I’m sad to say. The union is bringing practically the same team that stomped the group stage of the previous RUWC but got exposed against Hannasea, with the exception of a couple of people, and that’s only because they forced the FRU’s hand by retiring from international duty. We do have a few new faces in this team, but most of them are going to be on the bench, so don’t count on seeing them a lot throughout the coming campaign. The only person 25 years old or below who had the good fortune (or bad, depending on your point of view) of making it into the starting lineup is 24-year old Riley Agustin, a tighthead prop who usually plays for the Bytuch Feld Dinosaurs. This young man has been tearing it up for the Dinosaurs in the Rugby Premiership, and many of my fellow pundits believed, as did I, that he was going to get his first cap for the Revolutionaries sooner rather than later. The boy deserves it, he really does. At the same time though, there’s this fear at the back of my head that this could very well be a poisoned chalice kind of situation for Riley. On one hand, he’s the kind of guy that could really do with some exposure on the international stage, but on the other hand, we’ve seen what that exposure could do to anyone who’s even remotely linked or connected to Abanhfleft. I do have confidence that the lad will swim rather than sink, but I’m also afraid that the rest of the team could end up dragging him down into the depths.

And I think that’s where I’m going to leave it. I don’t really have a pithy outro or something like that like what Graham O’Doherty used to do just yet, but I hope something will come to me soon enough. Now remember to leave your thoughts or comments about my first ever blog post or our chances in the Rugby Union World Cup down below. I’ve been told that the site really loves knowing said thoughts and comments. Once again, I am Mo Wilcox, your new host of The Rugby Rundown, and I’m sure we will all see each other again later.

Mrs Entwhistle's Geo-rugb-phy Field Trip: The Adventure Begins

Dhee Dooh Duuh "Flight GRA 1093 is now ready for boarding at departure gate 37. Flight GRA 1093, gate 37" Dhee Dooh Duuh. The automated announcement was not what Mrs E wanted to hear while redressing at the end of the security screening. "COOOMMMMEE ONNN TIMMY, WE GOTTA GO!" she squealed as she flung her half open bag over one shoulder. "It's always the ruddy farthest gate too" grumbling as she almost wrenched Timmy's arm straight from its socket. "No time", pulling him away from the mammoth bag of chocolate candies as they rushed through the duty free shop. She was not going to miss this flight.

Mrs Entwhistle, more commonly Mrs E to students past and present, is Lachi High's Geography teacher and resident rugby fanatic. She had planned this trip as all her Birthdays and Christmases come at once. Not only getting to take in some of the interesting geography of Britionsea but getting in on some of the action for Hanalia's first foray into international rugby.

Mrs E was the definition of rugby mad, if she wasn't at school she was at the club. Handing out orange slices to the kids, 'coaching' the real youngsters barely old enough to hold a ball, cheering on at the sidelines or sitting in the club room watching whatever match happened to be on. Wouldn't matter if she'd seen that particular match 1000 times before, she whooped and screamed at the TV as if it were live.

The PE coach was going to accompany them on the trip, albeit much less enthusiastically, as he reckoned there'd be rather more education to this trip than he was keen on. However Mrs E was a hard woman to say no to especially when your name was Mr Entwhistle. A dozen students had signed up for thr trip:
- Ben, Masie, Chrissy and Stephen who are all in the rugby team and Mrs E's 3rd period geography class
- the Lachi High front row: Alvin, Simon and Theodore; joined at the hip, often physically but always metaphorically
- Madjka doesn't know what a rugby ball looks like but has brought their rock pick and pocket seismometer along
- Jane, Jennifer and Jake more interested in the rugby boys than either rugby or geography
- and the aforementioned Timmy, bundled off on the trip to give his parents some peace as he bothers someone else for a few weeks

Timmy and Mrs E may have been the last ones in their seats out of everyone on the flight, but now the adventure begins...

Tactics: The Darmeni game puts an emphasis on territorial advantage, thereby making the team's kicking game its most important asset. Darmeni teams will go for three points at any chance they get; receiving the resulting kick-off following the score will give them an advantage in possession as well. The introduction of the 50:22 rule has seen the Darmeni team become slightly more aggressive when it comes to scoring tries, but the team still attempts far more drop goals than is usual.

Bulls face former champions in RWC debut

Libesia’s national rugby union team, the Bulls, will make their competitive international debut in their first game since independence, playing against two-time former champions Abanhfleft. The match at the Saintlake Stadium in Doportedas, Britonisea, will kick off Rugby World Cup 37, and more importantly for Libesia, their international career. The hopes of the newly independent fledgling postcolonial republic lie heavily with the multiethnic team, with rugby a favoured sport of the former colonial settlers and remaining white minority population, but efforts made to get more black Libesians into the game through the LFU’s Iyipada program. Veteran captain Ernst Hochmeister will partner exciting young talent Audu Oluwabusolami in the second row in a striking visual representation of the nation’s steady transformation – as well, hopefully, as an effective lineout pairing. Coach Leon Steiner has been at pains to insist he picked his squad on talent, and there can be few doubts that players like powerful crash centre Dabuka Malibongwe, speedster Asanda Ngxanga, and breakdown threat Dabu Lwandile have earned their place on merit.

Yet his decision to hand the starting 10 role to Markus Kuhlekonke has raised eyebrows in the fusty Libesian rugby community. Kuhlekonke is fast, confident with ball in hand, and an excellent defender, but his kicking is suspect; by including regular fly-half Gaëtan Du Toit in the starting XV (at full-back, preferred to the speedy but defensively suspect Isaac Bergen), Steiner has given himself insurance options off the tee but Kuhlekonke’s decision making will certainly be subject to close scrutiny. Gregor Mendel, whose play has seen significant evolution this season, remains on the bench. Neo Abdulla, rugby correspondent for the Ramabane Late-Morning Leader says that the criticism of Kuhlekonke is unwarranted. “The Bulls haven’t played a minute of rugby and all the old colonialists are already criticising them,” scoffs Abdulla. “It’s totally unfair.” Less controversial has been the decision to prefer the experience of veteran front row Heinrich Konstantin, Cristiano Ciullo, and Danté Barnard, to the younger trio of Senzangakona “Goliath” Phutheho, Tinashe Mumbengegwi, and Mmusi Mohau Kenanao. “Keeping the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit back in reserve to bring the power in the second half is the right call,” says Abdulla.
