The original airport that served Lofanza, the Lofa Airport, was opened in July 1912 at Robusa Field, the runways of which now form Forlo and Maarsin in Lofanza. In 1928, following Lofanza independence, the airport was moved to its current site adjacent to the Kardik Airbase, which was then called Misjhin Field. The original structure was built on what is now the site of the present-day Terminal X.
In 1957 the airport's international runway and associated taxiway were built, and in 1963 the construction was started on a control tower and a terminal building for the use of international passengers. The new terminal was inaugurated on October 30, 1999. On January 22, 2001, a fire caused substantial damage to the original terminal building, and a slightly smaller terminal was rebuilt in its place the following year. This second terminal would become the country's international terminal until 2002 when a new, higher-capacity terminal, known today as Terminal 101, was built to replace it.
The old international terminal would serve as Lofanza's domestic airport until another fire damaged it in May 2003. The present Terminal 101, originally named Lofa Airport, was given its present name on December 14,2005. Plans for a new terminal were conceived in 2006, when the Department of Transportation and Communications commissioned Malberry International Airport to do a feasibility study to expand capacity.
The recommendation was to build one new terminal. In 2008, the government approved of constructing the most largest and most modern terminal, the Terminal Marillia. Then it completed in 2010. In late 2011, the terminals were renovated and had undergo an intensive beautification so that passengers will be attracted to the airport. The renovated terminals especially Terminal 777 was being filled up with the latest and newest technology that an airport has.
