OOC: CoPS Map Discussion and Claims

Postby Lubyak » Sat Oct 01, 2011 1:16 pm

Welcome to the CoPS RP Group Map Discussion thread. Here, we will place your nation into our general RP area, based in Pony Lands and called 'Poneria' by some players IC. It is our opinion that having ideas of the actual location and geography of other nations is an excellent incentive and aid to RP. Here, you can make your claims, discuss them, and see the finished map as it's updated. I will try to update as regularly as possible.

Thanks to the services of my good friend Montesardo-East Adanzi, we have a different version of the map available. This is the most up to date version of the map, and is to be considered canon where it disagrees with the other version of the map.

Unified Mont Map

Northern Pony Lands/Poneria (WIP)
Southern Pony Lands/Poneria (WIP)

Both of these files are rather large, so be warned about opening them if your computer is notoriously slow. At the moment, both are being heavily edited, so please be patient.

  1. Scale: 1 pixel = 4 km2
  2. The thickness of rivers represent their flow (e.g. a thicker river = a higher rate of flow)
  3. An individual 'mountain' on the map represents a peak, with the size of individual peak markings being representative of the height of the peak.
  4. City markings: The nation colored round dots represent major cities in any nation's canon. The exact definition will vary from nation to nation, but the marking themselves remain the same.

I am first come first serve, in terms of allocating space, and I will be editing the map as I find the time. If you wish for a spot, please fill out the below application, and please be as detailed as possible. More detail means your nation is more likely to be the way you want it to be, and I am willing to edit the base features of the map if need be in order to fit what you want. If you have name suggestions for continents, regions, or seas, please let me know, as it's a great way to add nice touches to the mpa.

Flickr, unfortunately, does not come with any size above that (even though the map is really 10880x4520).

If you'd like, I can email the actual file to you.

I don't want to sound nasty.. but the green thingy doesn't really look like Hippostania.. What program are you using? Would it be possible to overlay the map of Hippostania half-transparent so you could shape it better?
Other than that, it's awesome!
Also, the bay and the peninsula in the top of the northern island look a bit too big, perhaps you could shorten them a bit?

..oh, and one more thing. There is a small mountain range in the southern part of Hippostania too ;)

I'm using MS Paint.

If you'd like, I can email you the file, and you can play around with your borders rivers and what not so that it looks like Hppostania.
And don't worry about criticism. I like constructive criticism. :D

Mk, mountain range? I'll be sure to do that.

And don't worry, that peninsula has been fixed. The shapes you see in the image below are rough drafts...I'm playing with the coastlines constantly so that they look nice and realistic. I just draw a rough idea of what I want things to look like first.

Eadesiopia, you are awesome as hell. It's great to see the map like that!

Edit:

Ok. So, once Hippostania gets his edits to his nation back to me, I'll toss on a few more geographical features before declaring the map 'done until we get more people who want to be on it.'

Hopefully I'll be loading it up again pretty soon. :P

when you finish making the map look how it should look. I might be able to have a go at making it look more... Real.

I have a copy of cartographer installed on my spare PC, Only problem I have is... I can never make anything look half decent in it without basing it on an existing work. The process of taking an image from my mind and putting it to paper doesn't work. From paper to paper no problem.

I think its because my mind lacks RAM

Sounds fine to me. I'll definitely toss it your way once things are updated.

Here's an update. I've fixed some bugs that were popping up with the names, and finished the coastline on the Eastern Continent, and made the map more presentable overall.

Now, if any of the nations want to start sending me TGs with where and what they'd like their capitals and major cities to be, please do. As a note, with my maps I only label capital cities, and cities with over 1 million inhabitants.

Concerning your question on the RMB, the only thing I'm particular about is that there's a large plain in the centre of the country.

This sounds intriguing, and we might consider joining in. A few questions, though:

1. Magical Equestria is intended as an RP'd version (admittedly a little warped) of the canon Equestria, shown from the government in Canterlot's POV. How does that fit in with the other pony nations here? Are we going to end up with multiple Equestrias? That would be rather awkward.

2. Are the sizes of the nations on the map related to the population of the nations inhabiting them? Magical Equestria is a fairly large member of Pony Lands.

Thanks Hippo. I'll do my best to get your nation to the size and shape you want.

Shrilland. Alright. Do you want me to extend the mountain range so that it covers more of the country? Now that I've put your name down, I can add a bunch more smaller shapes for 'hills' and what not.

Magical Equestria, to answer your question. So far, nopony has requested the used of the name 'Equestria', and to be honest, I've been hoping to have placed Equestria on this map somewhere, and I might as well take a 'first come, first serve' policy when it comes to important names like Equestria.

As for your second, yes and no. If you don't tell me anything else about your nation other than you want it on the map, I will base its size on your population, and make it look like and have whatever geography I think looks cool. However, if you tell me more about what you want, I can try and alter things to fit with your ideas of what your country looks like. After all, this map is for the region. :D

Thanks for your feeddback guys! I'm really glad this project is coming together so well.

Latest Update

Magical Equestria, I haven't added you on yet. I'll wiat for you to reply before I do so.

Hippostania, I tried my best to get your nation the way you wanted. I hope that I did it well enough .....

Shrilland I made your peninsula a lot more mountainous, and changed the color so that you look less...plain-ey. (That so isn't a word, but Sweetie Belle isn't here to correct me).

Finally, I started labelling some cities and geographical features. If you guys have any names/names you really want for mountain ranges or rivers or what not, let me know in the thread, and I'll be sure to try and work them in as best I can.

Hope you guys like it!

Sorry about this, but.. I decided to overlay Hippostania on the map as white, so you can easily change it now. Here
Also, the mountain range in the east is called ''Eastern Mountains'' and the one in the north is called ''Lothian Mountains''.

Hippostania, that's perfectly fine. Ummm...it could be that the server hates me, but I can't open it up yet. I believe you still have my email from when i forwarded you the picture in the first place, so if you could just send it back over email, I'll be happy to work with it.

Well, you can add us. The only geographical requirements we can think of, besides size, are:
  1. Some mountains. Canterlot is built into a mountainside, after all.
  2. A large stretch of forest/mountain/generally impassable terrain along part of our border (the Everfree Forest).
  3. A section of territorial ocean for our Sea Ponies.

Other than that, use your imagination. :)
