'Tis the Season' - New faces everywhere as old stars retire, and new players take center stage in Banijan baseball
BUSUKUMA, NATIONAL CAPITOL REGION- The generation of Sadiiq Xoosh, Gouta Rehana, and Mutebi Nvunyi did unfathomable, unbelievable amounts of winning at the NT level. Xoosh joined the NT for the first time during WBC 55, while Rehana and Nvunyi got their first call-ups at WBC 56. And the results? Well, they were tremendous. Glorious. This trio is, clearly, the most decorated in the history of Banijan baseball, and by a long shot. We've got to talk about the aggressiveness and ambition of these players, of course, to always reach for the stars, and lead a charge of Banijan players to the LPB, the best baseball league in the world at the time. But let's think about the accomplishment of these players at the NT level- when Sadiiq Xoosh rose to the level of stardom as the biggest Banijan baseball star of all-time, and in the rareified conersation of the best ballplayer in the world- full stop.
Those 3 had 7 classics together. Two world titles, at WBC 56 and 60. A silver medal, at the XIX Summer Olympiad (well, minus Rehana, due to the obvious- gender). A second place finish at WBC 57. And both of those classic wins, coming in epic fashion. Both of those coming to the two greatest words in professional sports- game 7. Both winning via heart-stopping thrillers, and these very players being at the very heart of that. In a Lions v. Lions derby in game 7 of WBC 56 (Banija v. Nova Anglicana), it was the culmination of an epic series, an epic battle between the two teams. Remember how epic a 21 year old Xoosh was at the time, hitting 10 home runs in the knockout stages of WBC 56? And who can forget, in the 15th inning of a game 7, a matchup truly for the ages, when Sadiiq Xoosh scored the championship-winning run after a triple to leadoff the inning?
And, of course, WBC 60. Talk about dream moments. The diamond edition of the tournament, On home soil. After a couple of poor classics, WBC 58 and 59, it was WBC 60 where this core, in front of the home fans, led this team to a series of great victories. Just epic series after epic series. Who can remember when we went up 2-0 on Valanora, only for them to turn around and win games 3 and 4, to put all the pressure on us in Game 5? And then a desperate team saw our bats explode, in a 10-3 win, powered by 6 runs in the bottom of the 1st. Then, the following series, going down 2 games to none to Zwangzug- only to have a stunning comeback, from 2-0 down to a mad, 3-2 series win. 'The Reverse Sweep heard 'round the world'. Or country, I guess.
Or, the epic of another tremendous game 7- this time against the class of the sport, the bluest of blue bloods, South Newlandia. Down 4-2, the Elephants 6 outs away from another world title- and the comeback, on. We scored in the 8th. Nvunyi hit the game-tying RBI single in the 9th. And then after that- Xoosh and Rehana, hitting back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the 11th, to win a world title? Epic. Amazing. Beautiful. Legendary. Words cannot describe the moments that these guys have provided for Banijan sports fans.
But they cannot play forever. And so, having accomplished it all, all three have retired- and made way for the new generation of players. 6 field players, including 3 starters, are making their NT debuts for Banija this tournament, and it is the turning of a new chapter- a new era of Banijan baseball. "It is time for other players to take the mantle, to see the path that was laid out for them- and walk it." The expectations, despite losing so much talent, are always high for this team. But are they playing with house money? It's hard to replace guys like Xoosh and Rehana, and Nvunyi, but they are sure as hell gonna try. A lot of players with have the opportunity to be the next big thing.
Salia Kamara will have the first crack. A few big moments himself, he's one of those players who will be 'the man' for this team, expected to come up in big situations. But what about the debutants? Bwire Ssekaana, the left fielder, is the one to watch. Just 22 years old, the lefty has shown he can be a complete hitter- but it's another beast, pressure wise, adjusting to WBC pitching. The decided lack of star power on this team is not commonly how these Banijan teams look- but we'll see if anybody can take this tournament to gain this star power, and help lead the drive towards title #5 for this national team.
