Of course, the front-runners are Sadeg State. They have the head-to-head against the two Chromatik schools - albeit a narrow one against Staramara Tech. Sure, the -41 mark against Cavsar isn't the best, but as long as they keep the Point Differential against the Firehawks and don't lose to the Lava by too much, they should maintain the lead no matter what happens in the match against the Gladiators.

Then, it's the Gladiators. Sure, they lost big to Staramara Tech, but the walloping of Sadeg State gives this team a chance at the title - as long as they can actually live up to the billing of contenders.

After them, it has to be the Lava. Despite dropping two games in cross-division play, the point differential math works out the best for this team, siting at +38 point differential against everyone helps. The -7 against Sadeg State can be gained by almost any win. It may be a problem that they've lost one more game than everyone else, but the team has the defense.

Which means that the Firehawks are the least likely to win the division, even if Hudson Charles has led this team to four straight wins. Can he keep up this level of play against stronger opposition? He'll travel to Sadeg first to face Beck, one of the better Quarterbacks in the NSCF.

Opinion: Prince Pieter's Young Republicans club should not be forcibly shuttered

OPINION DESK — All students present in the Lansing Student Union on Tuesday around noontime saw Rector Wolfswinkel, flanked by the board of the university, announce the mandatory shuttering of the Prince Pieter's Young Republicans club. The Young Republicans were stripped of their official sanction by the Extracurricular Board, they were forced to disband their quarterly newsletter ("Ter Stierkikker"), and their "Republican March" from the Antwerp Quad into downtown New Rotterdam, scheduled for February, has been "indefinitely postponed."

Preliminary reports suggest that as many as eight student leaders of the organization have been privately called in by the university administration for "brutal admonishings" and, even more concerning, threats—namely that if they don't cease their political activities, their enrollment at Prince Pieter's may be terminated.

For all students, faculty, and alumni of Prince Pieter's College, these actions should ring grave alarm bells.

While republicanism as a political concept is not necessarily a widely-supported one at the school which has been described as a "cradle of the elite", the right to free speech and protest is ingrained in the structure of an innovative university. There is no extricating one kind of freedom without kneecapping all others.

This truth is demonstrated by the other blunt actions of the Prince Pieter's administration. Wolfswinkel resumed classes during the protests that erupted after his address to the student body, and ordered university constables to retrieve attendance sheets, with suspensions awarded to those who did not show in order to protest outside the Lansing Union. He ordered Young Republicans flyers scrubbed from the campus and remaining copies of Ter Stierkikker discarded. And the university prevost Robbert Hoogmans appropriated all of the Young Republicans' measly treasury in flagrant breach of precedent.

All students should worry about what message this sends regarding their extracurricular and academic freedom. Among the students most intensely targeted by this purge are three who occupy the Dean's List, one RA, two presidents of other clubs, and one PhD candidate with two co-authored papers. The administration is not sparing anyone.

Wolfswinkel and the board have also shown that they will yield to opaque political pressure. It is no surprise where the crackdown comes from. Princess Wilhelmina and her entourage are confirmed to be visiting Prince Pieter's on their tour of the New World this February, and apparently in the backrooms of Boekbinder Hall the university brass have decided that a republican political club is an embarrassment to their establishment, their sanctified halls of eliteness and perpetuated wealth, or that it conflicts with their mission not as a research center or a temple of growth but as an investment or an endowment or an indoctrinal training ground where future nobles learn the trades of socializing and cotillion.

I do not care if you, reading this, are a republican or if you have any time for republican ideals. I do not even care if you are a glorifier of the monarchy or an heir to some top level of the class structure or whatever you may be. But I will be forward and assume that you are a friend of liberty and a dedicant to freedom. Therefore I call upon you to be angry, indignant, and far from quiet. Like the bullfrog—the symbol of New Rotterdam republicanism—do not be afraid to sing your tune of a righteous, raw, and uncompromising sense of justice, which I know that you have. Defend Prince Pieter's College—not the Prince Pieter's represented by the university's actions but the Prince Pieter's of its ideals, however deeply buried they may seem to be. Best of luck. ■

However seemingly inexplicable, UC-Prairie has managed to run through the Boreal and the Heartland unscathed, being the last undefeated team in NSCF. Usually, Craig Kelly manages to sell it like he always does before this point, but why does it have to be this season that the Jays decide to go 7-0? The same year they change quarterbacks despite almost the entire program returning for a 5th year? The season Nova Calania starts to improve as a whole? How is it possible that, through all of this, they're undefeated? Well, there's two popular theories. The reason that UCP and their fans are behind? Larry Cunningham. Gotta love him, right? Now, this is no disrespect at all to our mulleted and mustached savior Jerry Atkinson, but Cunningham does the impossible: he understands what Craig Kelly is trying to do, without understanding why. Anyone who understands the method to Craig Kelly's certain madness would be a miracle worker on their own, but someone who can actually put it into practice like Cunningham is a big enough influence to make a team go undefeated. Somehow, the man who is (for now) taking the Jays to the promised land looks eerily like the man who put them on the map. Coincidence? I think not. It's only fitting someone in the image of our savior would deliver this team a playoff berth in his first year. The second and more widely accepted reasoning is aptly dubbed "The MidCon Theory" referring to the Mineral as the Mideral and the Jays' competition as "milkmen and factory workers". You definitely can see where this idea is coming from, considering that they share a division with an 0-7 and 2-5 team. Meanwhile, in the Heartland, St. Paulus and Green City are both below .500, presumably explaining the "near misses" against them. This argument, although dubious in reasoning, is definitely compelling if true. The idea that UC-Prairie is the only half-decent team in a conference of field fillers seems to have discredited the entire 7-0 record for some, leading to them being left off of the last Vanorian power rankings at 6-0, and other conferences to cast doubt on the Jays' hypothetical performance in a conference NOT named the Mideral. Is it true that a Mineral 7-0 is worth as much as a Horizon 4-3? Sure, but does that mean that Mineral 7-0 team is any less talented as a product? Logic would say absolutely not, and the Jays would say 7-0 is 7-0.

Taking a look at how exactly the Blue Jays got to 7-0, the St. Paulus game seems concerningly close for a 2-5 opponent in the opposite division. In reality, it was closer and scarier than you can ever imagine. After Craig Kelly inexplicably misses a 2-point conversion in the first quarter, it's all downhill from there, as St. Paulus finds a way to stay close and take the lead with 12 minutes and some change left in the fourth quarter. The defense just did not have it at all, save for the final Man-Ravens drive of the game, in which they manage to get a stop with a little under 2 minutes left. As we all know, Larry Cunningham was born with ice in his veins and the clutch gene already instilled into his mindgrindset, so that's all the time he needed. With 25 seconds left at the opposing 46, instead of going for a field goal, Craig Kelly goes for broke and calls four verts. This is on par with the level of insane he was when he sent a blitz in overtime to JJ Garrett and company against STU in the NSCF 32 playoffs, and somehow, just like that strip sack, it also produces a game-winning touchdown. Cunningham would find Heaton in a full circle moment with him and Jerry Atkinson, having a highlight reel toe-tap catch in triple coverage at the back of the endzone. Sure, the Jays end up winning by 4 and keeping the undefeated run alive, but it was definitely concerningly close. Even though this Jays team is known for comeback wins, this one felt different, like they were experiencing a real sense of danger. That's something Cunningham isn't used to experiencing, and yet, it almost made him perform better. After the St. Paulus game, with only a Boreal rematch standing in the way of an immaculate regular season, it seems emergingly clear that the reason the Blue Jays are on this much of a heater is both theories. Sure, the MidCon sucks, but also, Larry Cunningham is becoming Larry CunningHIM. He's saving Craig Kelly from blundering a game, something the old roster was never able to do. All that remains to be seen is if he can hold on to that for three more games, all of which the hardest of the season in terms of trap game possibilities.

First, UNSJJ and the Toucans away. This game ended with a 1-point decision all the way back in week 1, and I doubt they're gonna fight any less than they did back at the start of the season against their tormentors. Next, Nowa Kalanianska and the Aztecs away, the same surprise team last season. This game was also close and high scoring, might I add equally nerve-wracking, although it was a 1-score game instead of the first 1-point game. The same thing for UNSJJ applies for Nowa Kalanianska. They're extra incentivized to fight hard to break up the perfect season and will go to great lengths to do so. And then, the season ends at home against Elysium City. Although the Giraffes are 0-7, there's always the possibility of the offense just shutting down. Of course, the defense is going to be bad, but it could easily go south if Larry Cunningham just loses his touch he's had for the entire season. We'll just have to see how UC-Prairie handles this never-before experienced pressure to finish out the perfect campaign.

Mina's Mission Part I

Three months. Three. Long. Months.

13 days on, one day off. 12 hour shifts.

Contact with the regular world? Non-existent.

Contact with others in her specialized division? Minimal aside from brushing shoulders with Antonio during their shift changes?

“How’s the ears?”

“Good, silent.”

12 hours until the ‘conversation’ was repeated.

Where they were located, well they couldn’t quite say; actually it was rather impossible for them to know. Transport in and out of the facility was done with double blindfolds and enough twists and turns to make Mina’s stomach still feel ill three months later. They were only allowed out of the base once every two weeks, blindfolds on, loaded into a plane before landing in a small, military town where they could visit shops, sleep in a bed nicer than a solitary cot in a stuffy room; it was what the bare minimum this black-ops unit needed to preserve their sanity.

As Mina pondered the oddness of her mission, she was also struck by just how boring it had been up until this point.

13 days on, 1 day off. 12 hour shifts. For 90 days.

Nothing. For 90 days, not even as much as a false alarm flashed on the control panel of the incredibly advanced network of computers, machines, and sophisticated surveillance devices she and Antonio where charged with monitoring. She didn’t know where this system came from, only that it seemed far beyond any level of tech Cardenao had access to, at least that she knew of, nor was she entirely sure what the full role and power of this network was capable of. All she knew was that it was known within the base as “The Eyes” and she and Antonio were the latest of a clandestine unit simply known as “Watchers”.

No government, no citizens, no society would ever admit it, but to ensure the maximum potential of a country and it’s people, well you need to keep close eyes on everyone and everything. Doubly so in a country like Cardenao, where government and Mihaly singularly determine what and how their people would be doing. Despite the broad love across Cardenao for it’s leader, you could never be too careful in ensuring social compliance.

90 days of monitoring Cardenao through powerful online tools, cameras scrapping people, moments, and items of interest, the most powerful machines in the country scrubbing thousands of phone calls, messages and online searches per second for any deviation from norm. 90 days of nothing.

Day 91–Final shift

Mina sighed. It felt like eight hours since she took over for Antonio.

“How’s the eyes?”

“Good, silent. Quiet as always.”

But that had only been three hours ago, nine long ones left before she rotated home for 30 days.

She ran her hands over the controls as she looked at social media posts from middle aged woman, she laughed as she read the private emails of the mayor of New Cardonia, who had deluded himself into thinking it was he, not Mihaly, who ran things in the Capitol City. Nothing out of the ordinary from the feckless fool, even his more strongly worded messages failed to raise a flag. A cyan light flashed before delivering a notification—cyan meant someone of note, in a good way, was active; click here to listen in. The details of the call populated her screen as the transcription service ran in real time.

It was Bobby Dials, easily one of the most famous people in the land alongside Mihaly and Missy LeCrown for bringing the World Bowl trophy to Cardenao, and he was calling a new number with a non-Cardenao area code for the first time, hence the system flagging it as strike #1. By the time Mina fully pulled up the call, the computer system had secured the relevant information and displayed it for her: the number was registered in Busoga to an unknown corporation. Strike #2. As she moved her gaze to two prominent buttons simply labeled ‘Escalate’ and ‘Shadow’, calculating which one she might have to push, the powerful software punched through the layers of internet security and triangulated the call to LeBois and the threat index dropped to 0%.

Bobby Dials, former LeBois stud QB, was calling Delbin Kaskende III, the Busogan quarterback who had taken the college football world by storm. Mina declined to listen in to the convo, instead reading the green text of the transcript in front of her as she typed a summary.

‘B. Dials to DK3– ‘

Technically she and Antonio had broken naming conventions by electing to use DK3 instead of D. Kaskende III, but writing out the later took too much time, so they had received approval to use his moniker after they’d already started using it; better to ask forgiveness after all.

‘Calling to celebrate DK3 NSCF victory against BYU, B. Dials praise for DK3 painting the B, B. Dials laments B. Hannah’s injury but is excited for DK3 to start the rest of the season. DK3 doesn’t know how B. Dials got his [DK3] number but says B. Dials is an idol to him [DK3], says he hopes B. Dials RFL season goes better than last year, B. Dials laughs and says he hopes both their seasons end on a good note, duo exchange goodbyes—end call.’

Totally innocent but the system was working as designed. That new number Bobby was dialing could’ve been to some Bostopian freedom fighters who resented Mihaly for his time as steward-emperor of Bostopia and were planning some sort of an attack. You could never be too sure, that’s why she and Antonio were here. The system flags things and they go in for a manual review; in this case she marked the conversation at the lowest threat level and forwarded it for further review. The code breakers would run it through their system next, looking for any and all hidden meaning before passing it along to whatever step was next.

Mina leaned back in her chair and looked at the clock, eight hours left now. She settled down and started reading through a communique that listed different groups around Cardenao that had been identified as having the potential to be, some day, a possible problem. She had only made it through the first page, detailing some hardline religious sect on one of the smallest of the Cardenaoan islands before the 91st day became the first to matter.

As she flipped the page, Mina became aware of a soft, flashing light reflecting off the paper. The warning light. It was the first time in 90 days, since she and Antonio had seen a demonstration of what to do when the light started flashing—‘oh shit it’s flashing!’

It wasn’t a call, thank god because those took the longest to parse through, no, it was a series of online searches—the easiest to parse through.

As quickly as he had started, Peppi Klerkx, backup quarterback at Alexandria University, halted his search for information he shouldn’t even know existed, let alone be searching for over the public infoweb. Mina’s hand immediately shot to and hovered over the button marked ‘Escalate.’ 90 days of nothing and now, in the final hours of her final day, the biggest event yet was unfolding under her watch.

A Rule 34 search was some serious shit, enough to usually warrant immediate escalation to her supervisor, a mysterious figure she occasionally interacted with electronically. Usually. While she knew she should, a R34 query was immediately 3 strikes afterall, Mina, much like Peppi, couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of curiosity; why was Peppi Klerkx of all people searching for this information? How the hell did he even know about it?

Perhaps sensing her curiosity, her screen was populated with information about Peppi Klerkx. A junior at Alexandria University, he wasn’t one of those transferred from New Cardonia State to Alexandria, an operation Mina felt could’ve gone infinitely better, who looked like your typical student athlete. He came from a loving, intact family with every single relative coming up clean in the system, he had no prior infractions, not from the Watchers and not from the law, not as much as a parking ticket or a warning for disorderly conduct, which was popular among college football players. He was doing well in classes, he was traveling/visiting places and people he should, there was nothing out of the ordinary, nothing at all the system could flag as being unusual or worthy of watch in his file. So what the fuck was Peppi doing searching for Rule 34?Mina now faced a dilemma, one only she and she alone could determine the outcome of. Escalate to her supervisor and Peppi’s life is changed forever as the full gaze of Mihaly’s clandestine apparatus fell upon him. Or… she didn’t. There were so many unknowns with this case, none of it made sense—backup quarterbacks usually aren’t supposed to matter yet here one was mucking about with that which he shouldn’t know. ’No,’ Mina thought as she considered her career and the opportunity that had presented itself to her. ‘no, I can do something with this.

With that, and before considering what exactly that something was, Mina watched herself press the button labeled ‘Shadow’. Within the span of a few seconds, her request had been processed and approved. A couple heartbeats after that and the door swung open with an intelligence officer she had seen once before in passing entered, flanked by two guards with rifles.

“Come.” He said, and she obliged, noticing that as she exited, a fresh faced young woman wearing a uniform affixed with the patch denoting she too was a Watcher; it was a changing of the guard, six hours early.

“Your request to shadow review Peppi Klerkx online activity has been approved. We have determined the threat to be minimal, however your mission is to observe him until further determination in his case can be made. Contact prohibited unless absolutely necessary, standard operation communication norms will be in effect. This is your first out of office assignment Mina, any questions?”

That is what Lanar is supposed to do - tackle, bat the ball down, just suffocate the life out of the opposition. At least for the Vipers' sake, West Shantarr lost big as well - Maas van der Voorde made absolute mincemeat of the Scorpions' secondary - but it's the ease with which Myana Northwestern demolishes the Battle Angels that cause the most alarm. Six times did the Blue and White force turnovers, which they turned into five touchdowns; Kacper Grenda added on three more touchdowns, and the sixty-five points scored was the most in school history. There is a clear delineation between the top half and the bottom half teams - and with everything being divided into thirds, still a lot to play for.

Is this the most hotly contested conference in the Chromatik High School Gridiron system? Pelar High School has truly fallen off since the halfway point of the season, the Armadillos being the one to knock them down this time as aina Wirtanen throws two touchdowns to Mille Feng. The Masterminds run for 219 yards to destroy the Chameleons with two touchdowns being in the Fourth Quarter. Lastly, the Flying Jellyfish are somehow atop the table despite having a negative Point Differential. Dorothea Hannon stopped making mistakes, Terese Wheeler and the defense are playing out of their minds, and it's only two games apart from top to bottom.

The Heroes, despite having nobody that anyone knew, keep putting up good results - with Lottie Greenhorn's precise passing taking the cake, eliminating East Omnio from the title game. As for the Spectral Monks, Adara Cueva is heating up at the right time - hanging fifty-eight on the Grizzlies and growing their point differential to +100.

Two games that could be considered games of the year, here, as the Fog Wall and the Kayaks total eighty-seven points, the last seven being the two-yard sneak from Kimberly Decraene; Mayla Jones did a lot to try to keep the Kayaks in Conference Title contention, but their defense wasn't enough. The scoring fest from Pùr Heights and West Rhoni ended up ending at hundred and eight between two already eliminated schools; Kent Jordyn went off with over 390 yards and four scores, while the Warhawks' Kim Ha-Rin set a school record for 219 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Three teams remain in contention for the two spots in the playoffs.

NMU head coach, Hannah McKendry, leaving Bucak Field

Hannah McKendry was fuming. Embarrassed? Yes. Angry? yes. Her career record going to 1-5 against the Islamic University was, indeed, a brutal scene. But the way it happened was 10x worse. The Islamic U scored 71 points- a record day against NMU. No, seriously- they had been playing gridiron for over 100 years at this University, and not one time had the Cougars allowed 71 points or more. The previous worst was 96 years ago, when Loyola-Istria put 69 up on them in a rivalry game- taking a kneeldown instead of kicking the PAT after 10th touchdown because they thought it'd be funny. And that was the only time in school history that NMU had allowed more than 60 in a game. She wanted to join the school's record books, of course- but not like this.

Everything that could've gone wrong, went wrong. They received the opening kickoff- which they immediately fumbled on the return, having the game's first play from scrimmage be 1sr & goal for the Islamic U, at the NMU 8 yard line. Reece Santos kept having the biggest pockets McKendry had ever seen- it had been if the Islamic U had suddenly subbed out their entire OL for a RFL OL. Zero penetration, massive holes for the HB, just outphysicaled and outfoxed by every possible meaning of both words. Hell, McKendry honestly thought that Santos left the game with a cleaner jersey than he started. Impossible, of course- but it was that kind of game. McKendry went from yelling, to mass substitutions. One of those games where playing the entire roster wasn't a point of pride- it was a sign of disappointment in how bad the team had played through the duration of the game. And, of course, she took over play-calling duties in the fourth quarter.

And so, right now, the team was walking towards the plane. She had told the players- after a performance as pathetic as this one, she was demanding silence for the flight back. They would have to sit there and marinate in it- the only way to learn from losses like these was to feel it fully, and then move on. This wasn't season defining, but they weren't throwing it out, either- they had entered the game thinking maybe they could chase Loyola in the Savannah. Instead, nobody's being chased, and Loyola fans were booking their train tickets to Busukuma with just two weeks left in the season.

As she was boarding the flight, she saw the defensive coordinator in front of her- and lit up.

"Boaz!" She screamed at him. "What the hell are you doing here??"

He looked at her, bewildered. "Uhh..." He began stammering. "Boarding the flight back to Herzegovina City?"

"On the TEAM plane?" She asked him, incredulously. He looked at her, confused. "Do you think your defense can give up 71 and you still have a job?"

"What?"

"Should have known better than to hire a dude with any Loyola affiliations." She said that, referencing his last job as Loyola-Busukuma's HC. They hated Loyola-Istria just as much as anyone- but she was too pissed off to care. "Get out of my sight. From this moment on- you're fired." Okello looked at her, stunned. He then grabbed his bags, and walked over to talk to NMU's AD, who bought him a commercial flight home. Who was to be the new DC? No idea. But a 71 point beatdown always meant change was a foot..

Short-Form News: Lukiiko passes bipartisan expansion of the Lubabalo Fund in Chromatika

BUSUKUMA, NATIONAL CAPITOL REGION- After Xolile Lubabalo came back to Busukuma to give intense testimony, despite it being election season in Banija, the major political parties in the country put a pause on political campaigning to give a large fund expansion of the Lubabalo Fund. With Chromatika in the midst of a refugee crisis that is causing serious social division in their country, this aid package will help relieve pressure. "I am thankful that the elected politicians returned to Busukuma for a few days to hash out this very important issue- they knew that it couldn't wait." Said Kabaka Mwanga. "Chromatika is a key ally, and this is a priority issue for our great nation."

The fund, until now, has primarily been focused on achieving investment in the country, and less charity work. But with this additional investment, due to the ongoing crisis, the Fund will focus on charity as well. In particular, the Fund will look to provide basic food and medical supplies to refugees in need, and other Chromatiks as well. Due to political agreement, in order to support Banijan farmers(as it is election season), at least 60% of this food will be purchased from Banijan providers, with the rest purchased from local farmers. "It is a great deal, to ensure that Banija's farmers are not left behind." Said the Chairman of the All-Banijan Farm Bureau. "Banija's farmers are ready to support our friends in Chromatika, and yet, support Chromatik farmers as well by ensuring the rest of the Fund's food supplies come from local sources."

They will also work to build temporary shelters, although that will be intensive with organizations on the ground- particularly Sarai Gwenderyn's foundation. Xolile Lubabalo, as the head of the fund, will oversee these processes. "I thank our legislators for returning from the trail to make this happen. The people of Chromatika always know that the Kingdom has their back, and the people of Banija will always help our allies in any way that we can. Helping build shelters will ensure that people always have a place to live, which helps dramatically increase the quality of life within a city."

"'It seems this season was yet another exercise in futility,'" Iarocav quoted from his tablet screen. "'Once again, Drawkland's hopes for international college football excellence land atop the shoulders of Cavsar University. We all know how this ends.'"

Meliauden peered at him from across the table in their breakfast nook. "You're reading this with sarcastic edge," she noted, assuming her husband wasn't done with this spiel.

"I'm not sure how much I enjoy the defeatism that's infested our international sports media." Iarocav rubbed his chin thoughtfully, still skimming the article. "Drawkians are supposed to persevere in difficult times, even if the odds are stacked against us. That's one of our strengths."

"This is Cavsar we're talking about, right?" Meliauden chuckled quietly before taking a sip of her coffee.

"Fair enough." Iarocav looked outside the window of their mansion at the beautiful greenery of the grounds and tree-covered mountains beyond. "But even the Gladiators have had their day. Precedent is precedent, but that doesn't make it impossible for them to succeed. Merely unlikely."

"How unlikely?" Meliauden asked, reaching for one of the small pastries left on the table.

"Hm." Iarocav scrolled through the article again. "It looks like Firehawks have about a 50% chance of taking the division."

"Surprise surprise, another title for Felswyr State."

"That's Mountain District, honey." Iarocav punctuated with a scoff.

"Oh, that's right. How could I forget the most forgettable name ever developed?"

"Entirely your fault." Iarocav regained his place in the article. "Then about a 40% chance for Cavsar. The author expresses a great deal of skepticism at this number. Less than 10% chance for Sadeg State, because they need to win out and have several other things go right."

"That's what happens when you look past Silver Coast State."

"I love it when you pay attention to my surface level analysis."

"If I don't do it, who will?"

"So, anyhow, there's about a 50/50 chance for whether a Drawkian team will win the division." Iarocav sighed. "I can understand the defeatism. You either need a very specific scenario for Sadeg State to survive, or count on Cavsar."

"Everyone knows you can't count on Cavsar."

"Never!"

"And didn't Cavsar run over Sadeg State when they played last month? That probably factors into it."

"Don't remind me." Iarocav groaned. "Though it was quite an impressive showing by that one kid, what's his name, Gallagher?"

"That sounds right."

"Indeed." Iarocav chuckled. "It seems that Sadeg State and Cavsar are becoming true rivals. Not just by circumstance, but by actual derision and loathing. Nothing I love more than a good city-versus-city rivalry. That sense of competition is what drives innovation. Additional motivation to draw out the best you have to offer, without the bloody consequences of fighting an outsider."

"It's not a real rivalry unless you've got a name for it." Meliauden pointed out, getting up from her seat to refill her coffee.

"Too true. I guess nobody's bothered naming it yet." Iarocav mused as he took another look out of the window. "Well, as with all great things in this nation's history, it looks like I'll have to be the one to get things going."

"What, you're going to make up a name yourself and tell everybody to start using it?" Meliauden narrowed her eyes, but her lips curled slightly in amusement. "You've christened three or four college rivalries already."

"Why not?" Iarocav shrugged, pushing his seat back and standing up. "If their athletic departments are too lazy to make a good thing happen, I step in."

"You'll have to brainstorm. You've already used the Drawkionel's Trophy, the Drawkionel's Bowl, not to mention your self-named conference."

"Hmm ..." Iarocav paced, staring intently at the floor as he turned thoughts over in his brain. "Ah, remember early in our NSCF tenure, I sponsored a random postseason bowl game? The Axe Bowl, I believe it was. I think I can repurpose that."

"Ah yes, the Axe Bowl. Nothing says premier game like naming it after a random piece of weaponry."

"Not just any old axe!" Iarocav countered. "A replica of my axe. The one that's been used to conquer nations, and all that. It's a real piece of history."

"It was a fake piece of history meant to look like real history." Meliauden corrected.

"Okay, okay. What if I made a custom axe, not a replica of mine, but one specifically forged for this rivalry?"

"Forget the axe. Why not a shield or sword or something?"

"Cavsar's logo is a sword, plus that C which is implied to be a shield. Would be too similar to their branding."

"Fine, stick with the axe." Meliauden shrugged, taking another sip of coffee.

"Gotta make it flashy. How about gold?" Iarocav pursed his lips, reconsidering. "No, gold plating. And we could engrave the school names and game results on the blades continuously."

"Gold's a Sadeg State color. Isn't that similar to their branding?" Meliauden raised a brow teasingly. "Perhaps a little unintentional bias leaking in."

"Alack." Iarocav sighed in agreement. His head perked back up a second later. "What if the plating was two-sided? We could have gold on one side of the blades, and bronze on the other. That's a darker metallic color, much more Cavsar. Perhaps we could stain the handle navy on one side and maroon on the other to complete the color schemes. That way it's balanced on both sides!"

"That's a winner."

"I'll have my top blacksmiths start the job posthaste!" Iarocav fished his phone out of his pocket. He paused, looking up at Meliauden. "Wait, I think my last blacksmith died ten years ago."

"Sixteen," Meliauden clarified.

"That's no good. It'll take weeks to find another good one, weeks to procure the proper materials, and probably another week to forge it and ensure it's ready for use. I want to have it done in time for their Week 10 matchup in Sadeg. That's too short of a time frame." Iarocav plunked back down into his chair in the breakfast nook, eyes roaming back and forth across the surface of the table as his mind kept moving. Once again, his eyes lit up. "What about you, my sweet?"

"Me?" Meliauden returned the glance, surprised but pleasantly so. "You know I haven't smithed in years. Many, many years."

"You've had it as an on-and-off hobby for years. You even did it professionally!"

"'Professional' might be a bit of an overstatement. And that was probably two thousand years ago. At best I'd be quite rusty, in no state to be making a trophy meant to last for years." Despite her words, Meliauden didn't seem completely averse to the idea. Still, she continued with her alternative reasoning. "Why can't you just call a modern forge? Surely they've got some laser cutting machine that'll get it done in a day."

"Bah," Iarocav waved his hand dismissively. "We might as well buy a plastic toy from the store and spraypaint it. This trophy needs to MEAN something. Besides, any of our infrequent hobbies are like riding a bicycle. It comes back quickly, you know that."

"You said it yourself, it's a tight turnaround. I don't know if I'll have the time to improve from rusty to trophy status."

"It'll take a few days to obtain the raw materials anyway." Iarocav pointed out. "Plenty of time to do some prototypes. Don't we have an old forge somewhere on the grounds?"

"It'll take a day just to revive the old thing," Meliauden mumbled, but she nodded slowly. "Okay, okay. I'll try my hand. But no promises on quality!"

"My love, anything you create is worthy of the world." Iarocav said, walking over and giving his wife a smooch on the forehead.

"Anything?" Meliauden gave a peck on the cheek in response. "You should hold that ticket until you see whatever monstrosity I hammer out. You may want a refund."

"C'mon, they're football players. Nobody's gonna notice a minor divot!" Iarocav rubbed his hand on his wife's shoulder affectionately before starting towards the hallway. "Alright, I'm off to work in my study. Meet for lunch?"

"Yes, lunch." Meliauden smiled as Iarocav disappeared around the corner, then left her seat to head to their library. She had a little catching up to do.

As mentioned elsewhere in this volume, explicit primary sources on New Tamarind's in general are few and far between, let alone their justice system. What little outside observers have access to largely correspond directly to the little publicly available material published by the New Tamarindian government. An introduction to the New Tamarindian justice system first requires a look at the Book of the Faith, which serves as divine authority for the justice system as well as where most of its founding principles are located; before looking at criminal law, which is largely drawn up by the 120-member Diet of Cardinals, and finally, the process an ordinary criminal would go through when entering and exiting the justice system. Taken together, New Tamarind's justice system falls well short of any modern, cosmopolitan definitions of a fair justice system; though I argue that that is the point, considering that the justice system's main focus is on the prevention of crime through fear of punishment and incarceration.

[...] In the Book of the Bear, after Nerkot wrongs Peremid by uttering a lie that eventually gets Peremid exiled (albeit temporarily — Peremid, being the protagonist of the Book, utilises this time of exile for spiritual and moral enlightenment), is brought to heel in front of the elders of his community. Naturally, the elders are all high up in the religious hierarchy; Nerkot' sin is so great, according to the Book of the Bear (recall Peremid's status as an exalted figure in the pantheon of the Faith) that it requires such an important delegation to step in. Nerkot, the antagonist, is judged as guilty and as punishment is set to have his tongue slit; but Peremid, in his wisdom and kindness, begs the elders to reconsider. Eventually Nerkot is simply allocated to do menial tasks around the community as penance, as the equivalent of hard labour. The story is the only explicit mention of any form of justice being meted out, and thus is almost certain to form the basis of the New Tamarind justice system. If anything, this can be observed in reverse; most modern judicial proceedings are similar to the one committed in the Book of the Bear. [...]

[...] In one observation of a rarely-publicised trial — most trials are conducted in secret — Peremid intervening on behalf of Nerkot is respected; the victim of the case, or a representative, is allowed to intervene on the defendant's behalf to lessen a sentence imposed by the judges. This rarely happens, however, if ever; and sentences are usually extremely harsh. The rarely-publicised trial's occasion was for a public servant accused of embezzling funds for their own usage; given that the plaintiff was the Government, naturally they would not intercede on the defendant's behalf; yet the panel of three judges asked the Government's representative anyway, implying that this is a regular part of trials to the best of outside knowledge.[...]

[...] Conviction rates for crimes of all kinds — from petty to grievous — are exceptionally high. This is a point of pride for the Government, which routinely points to its conviction of criminals for offenses as proof that its society is a safe one. Most tourists do corroborate the ability to stay out at night without being molested, which does validate them at some point; the lack of homeless people of any kind on the streets of the city of Raukieff, the only city foreigners are allowed to visit, is also a talking point commonly brought up. Once arrested by any sort of law enforcement — either the civilian or the religious police — conviction is almost a certainty. Criminals convicted of civilian crimes are usually sent to low-level penitentiaries to serve out their sentences; religious crimes have a different dimension altogether, with camps in the desert being the most common landing place for these criminals, where sentences last from three to ten years. Women are treated about the same; the camps are not segregated by gender, presumably with all the imagined consequences that they have. [...]

[...] The death penalty is applied liberally and indiscriminately; an offense where the death penalty is an option, will, according to records, have that be the punishment about four-fifths of the time. The most widely-applied of these is the consumption of illegal drugs; marijuana is a particular scourge of the New Tamarindian government, especially considering their southern neighbour is a major grower and exporter of the product, to the extent that the Southern War (as it is called by the Government) was waged with the trade of the illegal drug as a primary cause. Abusers of the drug are considered irredeemable, and are immediately excommunicated following the pronouncement of their sentence. Upon arrival in the country, visitors are reminded no less than three times of the consequences of smuggling drugs.

What is in a name? It is an oft asked question among the more philosophical minded, of what things are and how we treat and perceive them with their names. Nominative determinism seems to fall under this same line of thinking, as the names we tend to give ourselves and our offspring seemingly shape the way that they think and the careers that they pursue, if that theory is correct. There is also rivalries, most of the best rivalries have some sort of name, more often than not referencing the games as some sort of battles, drawing upon the idea and inspiration that sports for many different cultures take the place of conflict and are a sort of faux battle or war. You can look within the Empire for this as well, as the game between the Raynor University Rockets and Mar Sara Tech Raiders is the Battle for the Royal Sabre and it is called that regardless of whatever sport it is being contested in, though this most often happens in the NSCF and gridiron. All the best rivalries have names and for far too long the rivalry game held between the Raiders and the Skyhawks of Sadeg State out of Drawkland has gone without a name besides just The Game, which is very unfitting for a clash of such reputable teams.

However coming into this season, both sides of the rivalry felt like it was time to brainstorm some idea on how to spruce up the name a little, to have it rival some of the biggest rivalry game names out there like the Rebel's Cannon Bowl. During the initial planning phase, the representatives from both universities spoke about what made each team and university unique to try and drum up some ideas on what to call the annual game between the Skyhawks and the Raiders. While they were expressing and explaining what made each school unique, they also talked about what they had and their nations had in common. One of those commonalities was the emphasis on interstellar travel and the exploration of the skies, with the Vanorian Imperial Navy being the branch of the armed forces that deals with the space faring craft that the nation has. These vessels in the past have been the various UF series of craft, the UF standing for universal flight, the most notable among those is the Curfions, a battlecruiser class of starships that has firepower of impressive magnitudes that a misfiring of a new version of its primary weapon sunk an island in Atlantian Oceania some decades ago.

Several weeks into the process of what the small group had hoped would only take two or three weeks when they initially had decided to have this meeting of the minds, there was a breakthrough. One of the representatives from Sadeg was on the phone with someone from Dhemexia and talking about the budding rivalry that the Skyhawks were having with the Gladiators of Cavsar, the latter having been a meme of a school for decades with their ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. A string of success though this season and in some measure in the past couple of seasons has seen Cavsar slowly losing their moniker of being a bit of a meme and actually turning into a contender not just on the gridiron but also on the hardwood. Listening in on this conversation by happenstance while having a bowl of soup for lunch while in the common area, one of the Mar Sara representatives had a lightbulb go off in their head and instantly had an idea that she was sure that the rest of the team was going to love. Waiting for the lunch break to be over and everyone to gather in the meeting room again, she pitched her idea to the team and was met with resounding applause.

A few days later in front of a small press assembly, the teams from both schools announced the name of the rivalry was going to be called The Battle of the Burning Skies going forward, evoking the burning flames of the great fire of Mar Sara and the battle of the competing interstellar ambitions, as well as the sky being the domain of the Skyhawks. While there currently is no trophy associated with the rivalry game, there is ongoing talks about potentially having one crafted when the two sides meet in Mar Sara during the thirty-fourth edition of the NSCF. For now, both teams look forward to the engagement in the last week of the out of conference slate, while the Raiders are trying to fend off the Rockets for the Celestial division crown in the Zephyr. The Rockets avenged their opening day loss in Raynor City with a field goal victory at Raukieff. However the Raiders continue their methodical drive through the conference, smothering Tophat in Mar Sara. The defense felt angry that they even allowed the visitors to score on them and that the offense did not put up more points on a team who is clearly not up to snuff. The Raiders will finish off their two game home stand with Raukieff coming to visit the team in Mar Sara, with a win for the Raiders setting up a winner take all game against the Rockets in Raynor City in Week 10, assuming Sidney Jones continues her solid play and leads the Rockets to a win over hapless Tophat away from the friendly confines of the Empire.

"No, you're not coming with me," Derek insisshot back despite Giovanna's insistence, "I'm not joking, this thing's dangerous, whatever it is." She gave him a pouty look, and the other assembled members of whatever this was exchanged glances. Every warm body on the Cold Hill defense was here. Philbert Aitken, towering over everyone but Derek. Miles Jackson, Derek's scrappy if undersized running mate in the deep zone, and linebacker Tom Zachariah. The others shuffled uncomfortably, but they couldn't get away in the crowded room.

It wasn't that he wouldn't be willing to have some extra help, but frankly interacting with anyone else on that defense would leave most people questioning the existence of a benevolent God. And the police, well, they'd been far from cooperative when he'd tried to go to them about this.

"Derek, you sure about this?" Philbert asked from where he sat - uninvited - on Derek's bed, the cheap-twin sized cot sagging under his greater-than-usual weight. "I know they had you on some crazy antibiotics, isn't it possible you were hallucinating?"

The Drawkian reached under Philbert's legs to pull out his hard case, and examined his arm once it slid out. Scars were woven into his skin in irregular, jagged patterns and there were still some patches that were downright disfigured. "No. I didn't even get a good look at it honestly. But trust me, whatever that thing is, it isn't human, and it isn't natural."

"Man, I love you, you know that, but even you have to admit this is a bit far fetched." Miles said without looking up from his phone - he was playing Elephantastic 9,the best game on the app store if you asked him.

"Guys, we've been over thi-"

Tom Zachariah interrupted by hmming his own doubts, and Derek looked up at him, "Do you trust me or not? Because this," he popped the case open to reveal his new rifle, "Is a gun. That can kill people. And that thing in the woods, that cold wretch, is probably more dangerous." He stood to his feet, clamping the case back closed and holding it at his hip, "Supernatural occurrences aren't that uncommon where I'm from and...well, I didn't even have meds to hallucinate from until this thing got its hands on me."

There was a bit of silence. Miles and Tom looked to Philbert, who grunted his approval, "We made you captain, didn't we?" He slid down off the bed, the floor shaking at his coming and the bed not quite managing to rebound in a room that had suddenly become incredibly crowded. "Hell or high water brother."

"Alright then," Derek checked the chamber, ensured the safety was on, and started pocketing his magazines, "Let's go."

The others filed out - shuffled more like. Derek followed behind, and he stopped when a tiny hand grabbed his bicep. He turned back with a grunt, "Giovanna..." he started.

"Oh, I'm not worried," she chirped and kissed his arm, "Look at these things. I just wanted to get a feel."

The forest outside Cold Hill

Gloyd had never been much of a nature lover. The soft light of the moon above illuminated his path pretty well, and the occasional scritches and chitters and sniffs of the wildlife around him at least kept his ADHD somewhat occupied. Of course, the steady white noise of his saturated armpits dripping moisture onto the meticulously cleared, packed-dirt path did its part. More than enough for him to miss the biting chill of a Cold Hill night.

But even the most touching-grass-averse of us gotta walk and think sometimes. And Gloyd was thinking hard.

He'd played his trump card and leveraged his family to get a date, and, well, he'd crashed and burned. His lip quivered a bit, and he kept walking.

He knew, of course, that his enlightened lifestyle would push some people away. Not everyone knew about water pollution, or the sun killing odor-causing bacteria, or that your teeth basically cleaned themselves. But he figured his genius would eventually break through.

"Maybe it's time," He murmured as he kept walking straight, head down. "I may have to conform to this broken society's wishes in order to secure partnership." Leaves crunched underneath his tennis shoes, and wildlife kept a wide berth, even the birds and squirrels up in the trees avoided his stench. A twig snapped under his foot, and Gloyd paid it no heed, murmuring under his breath even when the snow started to stick to and melt through his tennis shoes, intruding on his toe-jam and foot-sweat infested footwear with fresh water.

That's when he noticed the cold starting to seep in, and he looked up to realize that he had no idea where he was.

He looked around, belly flopping just behind him and bouncing with every stop. His footpath was marked pretty well, even he could follow that back. But instead of walking, he leaned down and his body shook a bit. He felt the tears forming, and then he noticed it.

They were much less subtle.

Four of Cold Hill's finest marched through the woods, all decked out in team-exclusive gear, mostly hoodies, all boots. "I remember where it is, trust me," Derek's eyes were narrow, his voice low but decisive. His eyes tried to cut through the dark, sweeping the wintery landscape. The others were a bit less focused. Tom Zachariah was grabbing any leaves that were still within reach and tearing them apart slowly as the walked. Miles Jackson was on his phone hitting dingers. But Philbert Aitken's eyes were on Derek.

He saw how tensed up he was, a guy who looked at his best in the most adverse of environments, and Philbert mouthed a silent "Oh shit."

This was real.

His hands came out of his pockets and he pulled up on his sleeves. Snow and leaves and branches crunched under the weight of their hunting party, and Derek stopped, hiking the rifle up into his armpit to one-hand it when he turned. "Hold up, listen."

Miles held up a finger, tapped the screen, and pumped his fist.

"Miles."

He glanced up and at one glance, slid up, one more tap, another, then halfway pocketed his phone.

"What's going on?" Tom piped up, "You're not high or something are you?"

"You morons," Philbert Aitken smacked Tom in the head then spread his arms, "There's nothing! Not a damn sound! We're in the middle of the woods and I could hear a pin drop." He looked back to Derek and let out a deep breath, "This is real, isn't it?"

"Yeah, too real." Derek pointed, "That's the cave, right there."

The rifle slid down and he two-handed it again, thumb flipping the safety off, and brought it up to a ready position, "I'm live," he announced, "Stay behind me, seriously. Tom, you have the lanterns?"

"Yessir," There was some rustling, and Derek stepped back, pointed the barrel at the ground, and nodded. The cheap light they'd snagged at the local general store hurt their eyes, and all of them looked away, but it clattered and rolled around until it fell into the cave.

For just a second they could see inside, and Derek brought the gun back up, stepped forward until he was almost as close as he'd been when he was grabbed. He crouched down, sighed, and kept scanning inside. He shuddered and squeezed his eyes shut at one point, gritting his teeth, "It's not here," he managed, "Fuck, let's go. We're close, it has to be around."

Miles Jackson popped down into a push up position and leaned down to check it out. Then his nostrils flared and he vomited all over the place, scrambling backwards as his breath started coming up faster, "Holy shit, holy shit, dude we've gotta go, this isn't a joke anymore."

A massive paw came down and lifted him to his feet. Another ran along his back, and then came down on his head with a handful of snow.

Miles yelped, jumped back, and shook his feathered hair out in a panic, "Phil! The fuck man!?" He ran his hands through his hair a couple times, then looked up at the defensive tackle, "Seriously?"

"Not panicking anymore, are you?" Philbert shot him a grin.

"Oh," Miles cocked his head, considered, and then shrugged, "Yeah, good play. Derek?" He waited for the Drawkian to acknowledge him, "I'm not an idiot in a horror movie. So don't you dare suggest splitting up. You've got the gun, and we've got your back."

Derek snorted and rolled his eyes, then stood up, trying to blink the light out of his eyes, "Yeah, not encouraging after whatever the hell that was," his smile slowly sank down, but just as his mouth opened again they heard it. A screech that almost sounded like a little girl, but Derek recognized the nasally intrusion to a normal person's voice anywhere.

"Gloyd!" He shouted.

He was already taking off before he knew what was happening, but it was too dark. The lantern had taken away his night vision, and tree limbs tore at his hoodie, his face, but he saw him. Gloyd was whimpering, curled into a ball, but Derek only got a glance of him before he himself cried out, crashing to the ground, snow and dirt and leaf litter flooding his taste buds.

But none of that mattered. His hands scrambled as he came to his feet, searching for the gun.

"My."

Derek froze. His eyes were wide, but almost everything was black. The cold, the cuts, everything was secondary to the drumbeat in his chest and the overwhelming presence of something inherently wrong.

"Take."

Derek's ears twitched at what sounded like a cautious step not too far away.

"My."

Everyone's got fight or flight. Right there, Derek found out his default response. His hands reached out once more and clamped down on hard plastic. He leapt back and to his feet. Something scurried, but he paid it no mind, bringing the gun to bear, "Gloyd! Hang on!" He looked to his right, then his left, kept the weapon raised as he glanced the man that had become his nemesis this school year.

"Hey, are you hurt? You've gotta get up! Gloyd you have to get up!"

Gloyd kept whimpering, and the next word he heard was behind him. Questioning, almost like it was trying out a new flavor of cake.

"Gloyd," Derek's eyes went wide again, and he whipped around, frost clouded around his head, his breaths came fast, and his finger hovered just off the trigger.

"Derek?" Gloyd whimpered behind him, and Derek nodded.

"Yeah, it's me big guy, I need you to get up!"

"Derek."

That one - that one was certain. But Derek turned, saw a blurry shape he'd never seen before, and squeezed. Once, twice, thrice. Everyone talks about a bang or something, but it sounded more akin to what most would consider a cannon shot. But even through the ringing in his ears, Derek heard it, a wail, and he saw a blur move away through the trees.

He kept the gun pointed in that direction, trembling terribly, and when he heard the rapidly approaching footsteps he turned on a heel, "Got y- oh."

The others had finally caught up - Philbert was at least winded, poor bastard. "Jesus man, put that thing down!"

Derek lowered his weapon, a shaking thumb flipping the safety back on. Then dropped it and leaned down on his knees before, unceremoniously, being the second one to throw up on the day. "I think I got it," he panted, "I got it, I got it, we've gotta, damn." Derek tried to catch his breath, and Miles Jackson was the one who approached, taking a step forward.

Derek's adrenaline dump had numbed him, but even he noticed when Miles' approach stopped. He dragged his forearm across his face and looked up to the others - frozen, all with mouths gaping. The white noise of Gloyd's whimpers were replaced with the rapid snap-crackle-pop of limbs moving in ways they shouldn't.

"Take."

Derek realized his mistake too late, and slowly turned around to, for the first time, see what human - or Drawkian - eyes weren't meant to see.

The Cold Wretch stood eye level with him not ten feet away, holding Gloyd's blubbery frame in one hand. There was something humanoid about it - but there was no doubt that if it had been human, it had shed that burden long ago. Its sickly, androgynous frame was twisted beyond what any creature should have been, flesh pale across its body if rotting off the bone in others. And of course...it was bleeding. Derek's aim had been surprisingly true, three rivulets of blood trailing down its torso. But if it cared, it didn't show in any way those assembled could comprehend.

"No...God help us," Tom said behind him, and the thing's gaze shot to him. They thought it was a gaze anyway, whether or not there were eyes in those blackened pits was anyone's guess.

The wretch's stiff lips somehow mimicked human speech, but its mouth opened and closed completely out of rhythm like a poorly dubbed movie. "I'm," it kept its terrible gaze on Tom while pulling Gloyd up to its face, "Here. God," now its mouth opened, and they all stumbled back, "No help." It's jaw seemed to completely unhinge as it started to lean down, hanging below its neck to expose an impossible wide mouth.

Derek screamed something unintelligible, and he hadn't even realized he was moving until hit power that gave the entire Big 8 nightmares smashed into the real nightmare. He managed to force it to drop Gloyd with a screech that left him even more deaf than the gun had. Derek's senses were overwhelmed. Gloyd's odor, this thing's stench of carrion, the tinnitus, his chest tearing open when the wretch retaliated, and arms screaming when he desperately tried to grip down on the demon.

He looked deep into the blackness that served as its eyes, and its mouth fell open as it pressed him back. Down onto one knee as it slowly cracked and snapped its way into something resembling a smile. "Derek." He fell back, and the wretch pinned his wrists to the ground.

"Mine."

Derek tried with all his might to move, to get any kind of escape, but fortunately, he finally had some help. A roar signaled the coming of Philbert Aitken, and the Quebecois defensive tackle's sheer weight was enough to barrel the wretch off. He pinned their enemy down to the ground, face first, straining with all his incredible strength.

It screeched again, and even Philbert winced at that, but the strongest man on the Buffalo pinned it down hard. Derek scrambled to get on top of an arm, and Tom Zachariah followed suit.

"Miles!" He called out as his entire body was lifted up by its thrashing, "The gun! Get the gun! Fucking kill it!" He got a great view at the thing's claws retracting and extending as it desperately tried to get any purchase in the frozen soul. Miles scrambled, looked around, and grabbed the gun. He shuffled closer, flicked the safety, leaned back with the but of the gun in the completely wrong spot, and squeezed.

Three blasts sounded across the woods as Miles completely lost control of the weapon, the kick from its automatic fire driving it up for three shots before he managed to stop, and Tom Zachariah started cursing up a storm as his shoulder began to damn near gush.

"You missed!? How the fuck did you miss!?" Derek berated his fellow safety.

The creature's now deeper, angrier roar was the only thing that could get through to their abused eardrums. Derek screamed "You missed! How the fuck did you miss!?" But no one heard him. Another bang, this one nicked the wretch's ear, and it was Tom Zachariah who was the first to give out. The linebacker's grip slipped after the shot, and when he clamped back down it was into a patch of flesh that was practically rotting off as is. His fingers sunk in with no purchase, slipped again, and that was it.

Tom was finally thrown off, and with one arm, the vile thing pushed into the ground hard enough to throw them both off, its eyes coming up to Miles Jackson.

That was the only warning he got before it jumped. One more gunshot rang across the wooded landscape, the monster shrieked, and Miles's mouth came open, but no sound came out, just fluid.

The other three stopped their scramble to get up and looked in horror at the scene before them. The wretch's back was to them, hiding most of their friend's body. But when it started to lean back, the sickening snaps and pops of tearing flesh followed. The wretch, for all its jerky mouth movements, chewed perfectly normally from what they could see.

And when it turned its head one-hundred eighty degrees, its hips moved just enough for them to see. They couldn't see Miles - but the blood dripping around this beast's feet was telling.

"Miles..." Tom Zachariah said with a shudder.

"Miles." The wretch repeated, its face caked in red as it smacked its tongue around, savoring the taste of its prey's flesh and name alike.

"We're going to die here, we're going to fucking die, holy shit!" Tom managed to get to his feet, and the wretch offered that sick imitation of a smile again, even more terrible than the last when its jaw opened well beyond what should have been physiologically possible, and started to lean down.

"Die..." it repeated.

Not that anyone heard that. But when they saw that thing turn around and presumably lean down for seconds, Derek and Philbert, at least, moved. Their desperate cries preceded desperate attempts at driving it off, but they didn't catch it by surprise this time. It was too fast, too strong, and had dumped off Miles on the fresh snow before they even got to it. That smile never left.

"Take die kill die take!" It cackled, a sickly mimicry of a laugh that sounded more like snapping branches in its throat than anything a person could produce. It batted at Derek one more time, sending him flying into a nearby tree in a heap, and actually gave Philbert Aitken personal attention. Its claws snapped up to snatch his shoulders, damn near stopping his charge without flinching.

"Take," it repeated as Philbert's hands came up to its forearms, trying to force it off of him, but its claws started sinking in, and Philbert screamed as his own skin broke, thrashing in vain as something in his shoulders gave with a pop, and when he got pushed back, he fell without much more of a fight left in him. The wretch's mouth came open and snapped shut. Again and again, its jaw hanging damn near a foot down from its chin as it offered that smile again.

"Die..." Its foot came to a rest on Philbert's chest, and it started to crouch. Tom Zachariah charged with a desperate cry, loading up and slugging its face with a running start - but he yowled when his wrist snapped. The wretch didn't even react to the strike, batting at Tom's legs to flip him over. His head smacked against a tree root with a thump, and he stopped moving.

The fight was over. If it had even been a fight. Derek looked across his immediate vicinity. Tom was down. Miles...well, he could only pray Miles was alive. Philbert was about to be consumed, and Gloyd was down bad.

He was all that was left.

With a Herculean effort, he forced himself to his feet, panting just at that effort as everything in his body tensed up to try and stop him.

"Hey ugly," Its neck cracked and snapped as its gaze turned once again to Derek slowly, calculatingly. "I'm not done with you yet."

His hands wouldn't move. Nothing would, nothing besides his lungs that is, and they were apparently overcompensating for paralysis everywhere else as he became acutely aware of the tree directly behind him.

"Derek." The creature offered. It stood to its full height, regarding him with something - he sure as hell couldn't tell, but it might have been joy based on that smile. "Die."

The Boss managed to get his hands up just as the creature began to prepare to pounce, and then his eyes reflexively squeezed shut when the forest absolutely lit up with gunfire, more shots than he could count, the barrel flash practically serving as a strobe light in the darkness, and he watched frame-by-frame as the wretch flailed and twitched and thrashed and screeched so violently that he could hear it over the blasting of the rifle.

Derek leaned back against the tree, observing the scene and letting his hands fall to his sides, limp while their quarry went through its death throes.

The sounds stopped, and so did the lights. The black night encroached on his vision, broken up only by the white and red snow all around them and the blurry pale of the enemy.

He heard something else, and he could barely see as his foe fell forward like a tree, and he himself fell to his knees, then all fours before he felt hands on his face. His chin was lifted up and he was pulled into a tight embrace as the beams of flashlights began populating his vision, and that was the last thing Derek saw before everything got even darker.

Charles, Firehawks win Fifth Straight as Firehawks Head into Matchup against Cavsar

Five games ago, the Firehawks were coming off a loss against the Lava, sitting at 1-2 and a Point Differential of -28 with only eighteen points scored and forty-six points allowed. Naia Curentino made the hard call of benching a Quarterback that had contributed to the Firehawks' run to the Championship Game last season, turning to the ever-present backup that is Hudson Charles.

Since then? 5-0. 184 points scored. 90 points allowed, including a 26-9 win over the Skyhawks on the road that avenged the earlier loss on the season. This time, Charles only went 20-of-28 for 210 yards and a score - a bit of a lesser outing than prior - but the Firehawks' defense, led by Freya Odinsdóttir and Jessika Kyle, harassed Brooklyn Beck into making mistakes. Four Field Goals did the rest.

Now, five games into a winning streak, the Firehawks turn to Cavsar, a team they've already beaten this season. Take them down, and they've all but secured a Division title that they were so far away from after three games. All because of Hudson Charles's play, the defense turning up their intensity, and other teams dropping some games, Mountain District have a chance to return to the top.

Sometimes, the best choice you can make is a hard one. Nicole Estera has taken the benching without much issue, not causing a fuss as expected for a Chromatik athlete. Will she redshirt and try to transfer? Go try her luck in the pros? Charles has done such a good job that the Firehawks have no reason not to utilize him for the rest of the season at least.

What a remarkable turnaround, no matter where it ends. The last Quarterback to make this much of a difference coming off the bench in the middle of a season? Kadesh Odika.

Charles is in good company.

You know, at this point, 8 weeks into the season, I just don't think we can question Craig Kelly anymore. He might have the sauce now, and I think we're all doomed if he figures out how to have synapses fire like a connect-the-dots picture. As much as people really want to yell at him for the sake of yelling at him, he just doesn't deserve it yet, let him have his fun going on a bit of a run before you eventually snatch it all away. Don't get me wrong here, Craig Kelly is a bad football coach. What I'm trying to say is that by having the Craig Kelly Decoder, Larry Cunningham, the Jays impossibly harnessed a weapon so great, the limits of it we haven't found yet. Does this mean that he's actually good and nobody understands him? Absolutely not. Is that the truth? Maybe, maybe not, but it's convenient to the narrative to believe so, and nobody really wants to believe that he's good anyways. In large part, going 8-0 is due to the freshman starting quarterback, Larry CunningHIM. Despite having one of the greatest mullets of all time, you just cannot talk enough about how mature he looks in the pocket. Cunningham has the pocket presence of a grizzled, ancient veteran, the build of a championship-winning quarterback, and enough aura to do something about it. There really isn't any more to say, Larry Cunningham simply was just born with the clutch gene and ice in his veins, and it shows in a big way.

In no game was there more pressure than the week 8 rematch, having to play away at the UNSJJ Toucans, of which the Jays nearly escaped in week 1 on a late comeback by the man, the myth, the legend, Larry Cunningham. And yet, he handles it like he's playing peak Cavsar or something (3-7 fwiw). You genuinely could not ice this guy if you tried, and trust me, the Toucans faithful definitely tried. In an unsuccessful effort to save their MinCon title game bid from UCP, the Nova Calanian fans only pumped him up further by getting loud on third downs, leading to him dropping three passing touchdowns on top of a defensive masterclass from Craig Kelly. Just to hammer in further how good of a quarterback Larry CunningHIM is at how young he is, none of his passing touchdowns were under 14 yards. Essentially, this means that for every single touchdown he threw, he had to thread it in between a wall of middle linebackers watching for the run and waiting to take Darius Haliburton's soul on a HB dive, a line of corners who are lockdown against every other MinCon opponent, and a couple safeties who are about to commit a felony if Cunningham throws a hospital ball to his receivers. Did I mention he did this looking like he would shotgun at least three beers in the parking lot pregame yet? This guy is simply the definition of him; there's just no way around it. Despite the fact that he probably did shotgun a couple beers pregame anyways, he still continues to get the job done night in and night out because he understands what Kelly wants to call and audibles into the optimal play without him knowing. He truly is for the boys.

Even though UC-Prairie is 8-0, that does not mean the job is finished. Theoretically, their last real test will come against Nowa Kalanianska, the other Nova Calanian side who desperately want to play spoiler to the Jays establishing their reign of terror over the Mideral like the Vanorian schools have in the Zephyr. The Aztecs might be 3-5, but this game by no means will be a walk in the park. Larry CunningHIM's clutch gene will once again be tested, as the last away game on the schedule, presumably a packed one, is one of the final barriers to a perfect regular season. They burst onto the scene in NSCF 32, going 6-4 and finishing second to the Jays in the Boreal, so if the Aztecs bring back any of that magic and Craig Kelly loses the plot, there could be some trouble in paradise for the Jays. We'll just have to see how they can handle the highest pressure game of the season to this point.

Cacophony in the hall.

A ringing throng of the New Rotterdam opinionated have been making their presence known since the morning's early hours; they've pressed against the wooden barricade fence that cuts a trail through the harbor of New Rotterdam, they've yodeled their viewpoints at the poor emissaries of the Dutch Consolidated New World Company ferried into New Rotterdam as those emissaries scurry between the guardrails and into into the Customs House, and if one would follow the fence-blazed path inside that building they would be met by another phalange, who occupy a standing room usually only meant for merchants awaiting customs court and at the moment stuffed far beyond capacity.

The mob inside the Customs Hall, a grand frescoed building that depicts scenes of nautical glory around its interior walls and which contains a soaring atrium of at least thirty feet, dangle leaflets at the passing emissaries and holler their stances out to be echoed by the Customs House's soaring ceiling.

Never before, mutter those emissaries who've spent their careers in the New Rotterdam colony, have so many settlers had so many opinions.

But this is only ostensibly a public meeting.

The emissaries file past the overfilled standing room and through tall oak doors that are shut behind them. Their real orders have already been relayed.

Nineteen bewigged men settle into a cherry-paneled room. Before them a map of the Dutch possessions, a codex of tax records, a diminutive secretary, a tray of pastries, and a case of brandies. Likewise before them, the task of transitioning New Rotterdam to democracy.

And through the thick cherry walls can be softly heard the sounds of a restless populace in the standing room.

But Football Takes a Backseat to Mysterious Deaths of Gloyd Manniweather & Cornerback Miles Jackson


Life goes on at Cold Hill University as police work to uncover the details behind the deaths of Cold Hill students Gloyd Manniweather & Miles Jackson as well as the severe injuries to three other students

Despite missing four members of their defense - Derek "The Boss", Philbert Aitken, Tom Zachariah, and of course the late Miles Jackson, the Buffalo managed to hold serve against Eastern Ye Dnad. But that's not what's on anyone's mind right now.

Thursday night, police responded to six gunshots in the woods on campus. Just before they arrived, over two dozen more rounds were fired per the officers. Only first responders were allowed on site, but the reports we have access to indicate that it was a grizzly scene. Cold Hill Buffalo cornerback Miles Jackson was pronounced dead on arrival, while Gloyd Manniweather's injuries became septic too fast for medical professionals to save him.

"We are horrified, distraught, and alarmed by the news we received last night," said Cold Hill University president Nelson Ethridge the next day on national television, "I don't have all the details, and I can't pretend to. Regardless of the circumstances, what happened last night was nothing short of a tragedy, a disaster, and completely unacceptable. I cannot ask parents to trust our university with their children if we cannot ensure their safety."

Buffalo head coach Chris Dale & defensive backs coach Charlie Steel reportedly missed Friday walkthroughs as they were paying a visit to Miles's family. We reached out to Dale for comment the next day, but all we got was a grouchy, "I don't have the energy for you right now," when we approached. Perhaps warranted. Miles Jackson was a senior who'd been with the program the whole way through, and losing the young man - who was majoring in sports management - just before he graduated must have been a sharp blow. And of course, junior Gloyd Manniweather, who was one of two students who weren't football players found at the scene, along with Giovanna Lelas Berhalter, who is not being held on suspicion of murder despite being found holding a literal smoking gun on the scene.

The others at the scene were all injured, and will not be playing against Richardson. They are all currently listed on the report as having non-football injuries, the second time Derek Boss has been on that list this season, and no one is quite sure when they're coming back, or if they will at all.

"I don't want to speak on what we saw that night," said Cold Hill Chief of Police Sam Zarchowski when asked why Giovanna Lelas Berhalter wasn't in custody, "It was a grizzly scene that no man should have to bear witness to. We do believe this to be an isolated incident, and I can assure you beyong a shadow of a doubt that Miss Berhalter is innocent."

But just like the university president, no details on the cause of death, why the woman holding the gun was let go, or anything else about that night. Theories are going viral on social media across several niches including college football, but for now the Buffalo have no choice - they have to step up and play football regardless. The team will reportedly be placing decals of #48 on their helmets for the duration of the season, and will be holding a moment of silence to honor both Gloyd Manniweather and Miles Jackson prior to games.

Lanar won't. Go. Away. Kenneth Jordean-Johnson III isn't having the best of seasons, it's true - but when you have a defense that plays as well as the Rhinos, it doesn't matter. Jacqueline Vom Bruch harasses Kacper Grenda all day long, Anston Gainston ran in the only touchdown of the game on an end-around, and the two teams that will go to the Conference Championship Game will go down to the last matchday. The Anacondas are the biggest contenders for that, playing some good defense to get by the Battle Angels - Miyamoto Oniji with two touchdown catches - and the Scorpions clip the Sand Vipers with Leena Kadian running in for two scores in the second half to remain in contention for safety and a spot in the Round of Twelve berth.

Just like that, it's over. Pelar's complete meltdown in the second half of the season was a product of Cirino Vian's regression and the defense folding; the Riflemen catapult themselves to the Championship Game with Fardhe Rosenqvist continuing to play at an above-average level. Their opponents will be Lhor Central, whose defense has really clamped down as of late - Mya Kinsella and Terese Wheeler turning it on and Dorothea Hannon starting to be a plus rather than a minus. Throw in the Masterminds shocking the Armadillos - who were favored to start the year - with a dart from Jack Karline to Shinsato Yasuhiro on a wheel route to win the game, and it'll be the Flying Jellyfish against the Riflemen regardless of what happens on the final matchday.

West Omnio is really turning things around. Umbar Hills puts East Omnio to the ground, but it's too late for that.

The Martyrs keep themselves in the mix, Vi Merrot having a 329 yard day - and it'll be a three-way fight for the second spot, the other two being put into the Round of Twelve instead.

Even in middle of the turbulent season that's seen girlfriend controversies, a speeding ticket, and entire squad paddled thirty times with a cricket bat following a shameful away loss to Lakewood Plains University two weeks ago, Theodore Galstian's St. Croix Bleu et Blanc are 7-2 in Celestia Conference.

Of course, they were also 7-2 at this point two years ago before losing the hold of the Equinox Division in a shocking upset loss to Saguenay, but the narrative surrounding it is different this time with a two-game lead on division sealing the deal last Friday night at Nordhammer University of Natkr. Those at the Stade St. Croix seems to be particularly optimistic about making their way back to the playoffs, which hasn't happened in almost half-decade. With Galstian being a very differently styled coach to that of his predecessor Kirby Wright, the level of energy that had come out of the program's no doubt been very different - one of flair and flash, here comes the money ways.

Perhaps it's of no surprise that BetFlix will be featuring a four-part, documentary miniseries on the day and life of Theodore Galstian with the expected release date of 'next Spring', as the Montevicio-based network announced this morning. Titled 'Theodore's Game', the miniseries will last over four, 60-minute episodes that will be released one week at a time.

Directed by a longtime television director Esther Yakabuski-Claudel under the FASANDA Entertainments Ltd. that owns the both the FAS TV just down the road in Joongyeong, and the Banijan challenger MUTVof Herzegovina City, the documentary will be covering about three facets of his life - his earlier life as a former college quarterback and a decadelong entertaining, his coaching career that's seen him coach all across high schools and university programs of Quebec before his stints with St. Croix and the breakthrough Bonneville State gig, and his dysfunctional family life with his fathers, five children, and a very recent addition in his current partner. Alongside with it, the story will talk about his average days as coach, and also much of the upcoming QIS football season in addition to the footages used from various points of the 33rd NSCF football season.

'Wow, it's indeed something special for me to tell my story somewhere out there where I could be honest,' Galstian said on a phone interview. 'It is something that I had hoped for very long time, yes, but to see it materialise, with just a year away from release. Can you believe it?'

'But I'll be there telling you all about it. I'm so excited to give you all,' he said.

This upcoming fall's QIS season, his second at the QIS level, is expected to be one of intrigue, one that's highly dependent on how the Bleu et Blanc's NSCF season turns out in spring to early summer football season. A former high school coach who has won state titles at Mahan, Yoseo and Joongyeong provinces, he moved up to the collegiate level fifteen years ago, when he was hired as the offensive coordinator under then-St. Croix's head coach, current Northern Moravica head coach Hannah McKendry.

He coached there for five seasons before being hired at Bonneville State, where the Broncos athletic director Joseph Duwel hired Galstian, then a first-time head coach at collegiate level, to what was a highly-controversial hiring at top 5 level of salary and concessions, in an effort to bring back once-relevant Broncos team that had gone over .500 in last twelve seasons. In a decade spent out west, Galstian led the Broncos to a 89-31 record and would win three SAL-10 Conference titles, two New Year's Six Bowls and a Tiger Bowl appearance in his penultimate year with the Broncos.

Now, he's indeed back to where his collegiate career took off, with a Tiger Bowl victory and a strong NSCF start to boot. The adjustments in his first QIS and NSCF seasons, however, have been anything but smooth sailing, meaning that the stories would continue to write themselves for the upcoming season as Galstian would have to face his own demons and address the luggage.

Hey guys! Welcome back to my corner of the internet for everything college football! I, of course, usually cover the NSCF, especially the two Banijan schools, as well as domestic college football here in Banija. I'm a University of Moravica grad- aka, we don't like either of the Banijan schools in the competition. But we REALLY don't like the Islamic U. And above all else, we DESPISE Northern Moravica. But of course, due to physical proximity, they get the Lion's share of this blog's attention.

I woke up today, and I gave a thought- let's talk about the divisional alignment! In other conferences, it has many times produced dramatic clashes in Week 10- how many FSU(now MDU) v. Tech matches have been for a division title? Or even this week, when Richardson v. Cold Hill will decide their division in the Big 8? But in the Celestia, in the Savannah Division(which has produced the Celestia's champion every single season), only once has there been divisional stakes to play for in week 10- and then, in NSCF 30, USC would've had to win by 46 in week 10 to win the division.

How has this effected the North v. South Showdown? And what does that mean for this year's game?

Savannah Division: The most anti-climatic division in the NSCF

Now, a strange headline for a division that, in the 7 seasons of divisional alignment, has had four different winners(Loyola 3X, Islamic University 2X, Saguenay and NMU once each). That shows there's a ton of competition within the division, which has always been true. There is no division in this competition that has had a wider range of winners over that time period, especially since all of them would go on to win the Celestia conference.

Last season, in particular, was the first with real stakes in week 10. NMU and the Islamic U both at 7-2, although not facing each other. But- the Caracals pulled it out. But, the eventual champion tends to race out early, and leave all challengers in the dust. And while they've won the conference six times out of six, their struggles in Week 10 are unparalleled. 2-4 in general, and 0-6 against the spread.

Savannah champion: Islamic University of Busoga. Division title clinched: Week 9. Week 10 Score: Islamic University of Busoga 36–34 College of Maresda (RST). Maresda finished 1-9 in conference play, with their only win in Week 3, at home, against the Islamic U. 

NSCF 32

Savannah champion: Islamic University of Busoga. Division title clinched: Week 10. Week 10 Score: Rosemount University (DKA) 7–10 Islamic University of Busoga (BUS). 
Rosemount finished 1-9 in conference play.
NMU, which could have won the division if they had won that night against Loyola, lost 54-33. 

NSCF 33

Savannah champion: Loyola-Istria. Division title clinched: Week 8. Week 10 Score: ?? (Loyola @ Northern Moravica)

This kind of consistency of data, for whatever reason, seems to only apply to the Savannah Division in the NSCF- no other division has been this consistent in its champion's struggles in Week 10. Let's divide this up- the 3 years it was won by Banijan schools(NSCF 27-29) and the three it wasn't(NSCF 30-32).

NSCF 27-29, the division was stable- the two Banijan teams, and the two South Newlandian teams, made up this 4 team division. And while Banijan teams won it each year, it wasn't like they were dominating the conference- the South Newlandian teams were certainly a force, and finished second in the division on a number of occasions. But, this gave us consistency. Penultimate week of the season- the Banijan team who was home in the week 3 grudge match would wrap up the division, ensuring that there indeed was not everything to play for when they got to their rival's house. And whether teams had their minds on Busukuma(site of the conference title game), or whether the team that didn't win the division was just in desperate need for a statement win- those games ended in blowouts.

NSCF 27 and 29- Loyola won the division, went to Herzegovina City in week 10, and lost by 4 TDs each time- 40-12 in NSCF 27, and 34-6 in NSCF 29. In NSCF 28 ,NMU won the division, went to Istria, and suffered one of the worst losses in its history, by a score of 63-7. An ass whupping of legendary proportions. A former NMU depth chart QB turned analyst, Bubacar Jagne, theorized on TV earlier this week why that happens. "These college rivalries, this one especially- gets emotional. It's a rivalry that has the two taking turns blowing each other out so often, because it is such a 'it rains it pours' rivalry. It's easy to get distracted- one bad play, you get in your head, you create another, and it snowballs. Then you factor in desperation- the losing side might subconsciously take their foot off the gas pedal when things start to go poorly, knowing that they've got a championship game next week."

NSCF 30... We won't dive too deep. USC and Saguenay dominated the conference that year, with the latter starting 8-1, their only loss was to USC at home, who went 9-0. They had a very close game, but- all Saguenay had to do to win the division that year was not lose by 45 or more.

NSCF 31... Let's look at the Islamic University. This was, almost certainly, the most exciting NSCF debut* season since the former Felswyr State University, now Mountain District, debuted in that same season. Double sweep of the Banijan schools- something that NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY, saw coming. It was pretty funny o see 'em drop 71 on NMU the other day, though wasn't it!

Sorry, my bad- really don't like NMU. But anyways. They played against the College of Maresda. Now, a little different than the other gamed we've mentioned- this isn't a blood rivalry. But, Maresda was 1-8, and the 1 had come against the Islamic U- the only reason they weren't staring 10-0 in the face. The Islamic U had motivation for that game- and yet, they needed a walkoff FG to beat one of the worst teams in the entire competition, at home. Remember, in 31 the Caracals finished #1 in the regular season, in general! At 11-2!

Then... NSCF 32. The most interesting data point. Both the Islamic U, and NMU, at 7-2. Islamic U having the PD advantage. Favored by over 20 against Rosemount U. And what do they do? Eek out one of the ugliest wins we've ever seen, a 10-7 road win over a similarly awful Rosemount U squad. One that was a lucky win, to be honest- Rosemount U's kicker went 0 for 3 on FGs. So it was more a bad team found a way to lose, rather than the Caracals doing anything in their own power to avoid what would've been the upset of the season. But at the same time, it's not like it really mattered- NMU were too busy getting waxed by their domestic rivals, Loyola, with their defense giving up 54 points to last year's version of Sebowa Jawara, of all dudes. A tremendous missed opportunity for Hannah McKendry- allowing 54 points in a game like that is just unacceptable.

It's happened enough times now to know it's a pattern. It's a fact of life- if you've won the Savannah, or are about to win the Savannah on MD10... You're gonna get smoked in week 10. It won't have any effect on your performance the following week, for the conference championship. But... The data says what it says.

If Jawara wins this, what a transformation it will be.. Against all the odds, from the pariah of Loyola football, to not only its savior, but full conqueror of its enemies.

But- we think that's too much to expect. The long arc of history is too powerful to overcome. So that means bet on NMU, and pound the over this week- Parlay a Jawara pick-6 with a Cougars win by at least 20.

*= Nobody gives a rat's ass about their 2-11 cameo in NSCF 22, so I'm saying debut and you're gonna bloody well damn like it.

Dietrich Stadium, Saturday Night

The biting chill of late-autumn air and the rolling chatter of a crowd nearly eighty three thousand strong was a combination that could only mean one thing - Richardson and Cold Hill were about to trade blows for the second time this season, and the captains were on the field for the coin toss. Dex Banka reveled in it, helmet on and straps dangling as he led his fellow captains out into the middle of the field. He turned around about halfway out, still running backwards, pointing to his twin sister in the crowd and offering a wave before turning back around to face the others. Brian-Willie Richardson, Landon Rayne, and Terry Jackson rounded out the Governors' delegation, taking their places beside him.

For the Buffalo? Dante Flowers, Taylor Dirkman, and Philbert Aitken - no pads for him, but the big defensive tackle was out there. But the big shocker was Derek Boss. The extra padding of a flak jacket poked at the sides of his jersey, but the towering menace known only as The Boss around these parts was dressed and ready to play. All four of them, like everyone on the visitor's sideline, had a second sticker under their own number with Miles Jackson's forty eight printed in bold red.

Dex was loose, bouncing on his heels as Dante Flowers called tails, but when he heard his rivals' voice, his eyes focused. Dante's eyes were heavy, sporting bags and his posture wasn't the commanding young man with absolute faith in his team. His eyes were lazing about, drifting, and he called for the ball with no enthusiasm. When the captains shook hands, Dex didn't hesitate, pulling Flowers into a classic bro hug and holding him there just long enough.

"Listen to me. I know it hurts. I know there's bigger shit than football. But don't you dare hold back on me, on this team. I didn't come here to dance with half of Dante Flowers, I came to compete against the best of the best." Flowers' eyes were wide as Dex pulled back, and he couldn't help but grin as he drove a finger into the chestplate of his counterpart. "You will give leave you have and more on that field today, and I'll still beat you. Got it? Lock the fuck in."

The other captains stopped from where they had started to leave, watching intently. Dex felt their eyes on him, but he didn't turn away, and he finally saw that spark - Dante Flowers nodded and clapped him on the shoulder.

"You've got it, dipshit." Dante turned on a heel, and Dex laughed as he went from flashing a peace sign to pumping his fist in the air, then turned around to head back to his own sideline.

Brian-Willie nudged him on the way back, "What was that all about?" And Dex came to a stop next to the big man.

"Their heads weren't in the game, I didn't come here to play Lukewarm Meadow," he explained, clapping his hands in anticipation of what was to come, "I showed up expecting to play Cold Fucking Hill. And hopefully that's what we're going to get."

"You're insane," Brian-Willie answered with that deep, rumbling sort of laugh only an elephant would have, and the stadium PA broke the monotony to get them one step from kickoff.

We ask that everyone who is able stand and remove your hats, as we hold a moment of silence to remember those students who tragically passed two weeks ago at Cold Hill University. Gloyd Manniweather, and of course Buffalo cornerback Miles Jackson.

It's crazy how quiet that many tens of thousands can get - although Fluffalo the Buffalo didn't exactly cooperate, snorting and pawing at the freshly cut grass, which clearly was not of the exact variety that he enjoyed. And Dante Flowers picked up on it - he turned as the announcer gave everyone permission to be seated and saw his coach with the same demeanor he'd had. Maybe worse.

It was the first time he really looked at the gray in Chris Dale's beard, the laugh lines etched into his face. Sure he'd seen it, but he'd never really looked before, and he grabbed his coach by the shoulder, speaking a little quieter than Banka had to him, "We need you for this one, coach. If you have to pretend, then pretend, you can put on an act for three hours." Chris Dale didn't answer when Dante stepped back, but stiffened and met his eyes with a nod. And that was all the Buffalo quarterback needed.

"Alright boys!" He called out, sliding his helmet back on almost violently, raising his volume to match the rolling thunder of the Richardson faithful's anticipation. "One more game to lock up a trip to the conference championship!" He raised a fist as the team rallied around him, "You want to mourn? You want to honor our fallen brother? Then do it by proving your worth on the football field! Buffalo on me Buffalo on three! One two three-"

"Buffalo!"

The team broke out, and Flowers couldn't help but grin when he saw Derek Boss grab one of the return team guys and drag him back onto the sideline by the pads, pat him on the head to offer condolences, and run out with the rest of the squad.
