Bravery is not about feeling the absence of fear or the lack of trepidation in the moment, it is about acknowledging those feelings and still going out and attempting to overcome them. Giving into fear, falling into the trap of losing hope, it is an all too easy path that can be taken and it brings with it a terrible price, normally in the way of poor mental health and a feeling of bitterness towards the world and others. These are far from positive emotions or a positive way to approach life, the path from fear to hatred and distrust is one that is a short one given how negativity festers and builds upon itself, snowballing until it completely consumes you. When terrible things are happening left, right, and center, when you see actions like what we have seen in previous years with our neighbors in Tuesland and Banija, it is easy to feel a lack of hope and to feel alone in a world growing cold. When you see your national team falter time and time again, something that is supposed to be your outlet and a way to be able to handle the burdens that the world tosses upon you, it is easy to understand the temptation to no longer care.

That is why sport is so important in the Empire and why the way it developed within the nation matters so much more than the way it developed elsewhere. For many outside of the Vanorian landscape, sport developed out of the sense of tribalism or as a proxy for faux wars or in some cases an odd combination of both. However inside the Empire, sport has and likely will always be seen as a way to build community, as way to come together as one people and lift each other up when we are struggling. The team is only as strong as the weakest member of that team and so you work hard in the weight room, you stay late to do extra training sessions to get that fraction of a percent better with that weak link. We grow stronger together, you pull each other up when we have fallen down, dust each other off and give a bottle of water before starting again on the path ahead. The way to getting better as a unit, as a team is to help those who need the extra help to get on the same level as their peers and teammates, to build each other up so that the final product is more than the mere sum of its individual parts, regardless of the quality of those parts.

That is why as the national team labors away in Rushmore and is facing a must win situation in its last group stage match in order to advance out of the group that there is no finger pointing and no blasting or blaming of players and teammates. Laborious Hawk has even said that he is not playing as well as he could be even when both he and Imre Haaland have been absolutely dynamic for the squad and ensuring that they at least have a chance entering the final round of the group stage. Personal accountability is the sign of strong leadership as is deflecting away blame from the rest of the team, as it would be all too easy to point at the defense and keeper and wonder if they had performed a bit better if the team would not already be secure on their way to the knockouts rather than fighting for the Finals survival in the upcoming match against Auprussia. That leadership will hopefully inspire the rest of the team to elevate their levels in this game where push comes to shove and if the team fails to show up then they are going to be making an unexpectedly quick turnaround home back to the Eternal Empire.

Our foes have proven themselves quality opposition, holding both Chromatika as well as the Goldhorns to a draw and thus sit above the Marauders as we head into the final day of the group stage. The side has in both of their games failed to protect a result, first letting a draw slip away late against the Goldhorns and then a two goal lead in the second half evaporate against the Chromatik push. The talent is there to get the goals but the team has either gotten too lax in the waning moments of the game or simply has gone too much into a shell to try and secure a result rather than playing the way that had earned them the supposed spoils from the match in the first place. With Auprussia needing only a third draw to potentially seal their spot in the knockouts, the Marauders are going to have to find a way to play a complete game and to push the advantage when they have it, to put the game out of reach if they enter into the ascendancy. There is no I in team and the team needs to operate as a whole, their captain has given them the shielding from scrutiny for now and they need reward him with an effort that sees the team capture the three points and keep their stay in Rushmore past the opening two weeks.

OF FATES AND FORTUNES
Chapter Twenty Nine - Chaos Reigns

Clara awoke in the bed reaching out for Jasper and bolting upright in a panic when her hand did not find him. For a dreadful moment she thought she was back in her cell and this had all been just a wonderful dream. But her brain caught up with her eyes now and spotted Jasper hunched over the desk with books and papers strewn all about, and she breathed a sigh of relief.

She looked over at him, saw that he was completely lost in the research and smiled to herself, wrapped herself for warm and headed over to him.

Morning darling, shall I see if I can't rustle us up some coffee, don't suppose in all this research it says whether they have a decent cup of coffee in Tikariot?

Jasper turned round to her, smile beaming back at her before drawing her in for kiss.

Sadly I've clearly neglected the most important research to have started. Can you ever forgive me darling?

I don't know, perhaps I'll find it in my heart to forgive this heinous crime, perhaps not if it turns out this world doesn't even have coffee...

Heavens forbid!

Clara's smile beamed even brighter looking at her Jasper and his mock terror. She threw on some clothes and headed out in search of the dark brew of the heavens. She kept an expectant eye out for the Tanirinthian security detail she was sure would be following her, but either they were keeping extreme distance, were extremely good at their job or simply that her knack of spotting a tail had grown rusty after all that time incarcerated.

One of the key things of multiversal travel is dealing with the complete culture shock, as when you travel to a different world and even within different nations on that same world, anything and everything can be done in the polar opposite way to what you expect; red light means go, thumbs up means no. What this means is to you need to be vigilant to everyone around you and how they are reacting and dealing with things. This can be very taxing especially during the qualifying rounds as the hosts aren't always going to be accommodating to the visiting parties, however it seemed from her limited experience that in the World Cup proper there had tended to be more of an effort made in these matters, and more often than not the people themselves were aware of the change you may be a foreign visitor and therefore more patient and perhaps less prone to a resort of violence due a thumbs up being probably the most taboo thing you could ever do.

So far Tikariot seemed fairly close to Tanirinth in how the obvious things seemed to be done, and thankfully had coffee. She had found a place rather encouragingly called "Caffeine Bomb" which seemed to be a chain coffee place which a focus on explosions (of flavour) and a promise to keep you up from sun-up to sun-down. She grabbed her and Jasper some combustible coffees as well as a few of the pastries on offer and wandered back to the room. She returned to the room to see Jasper at the desk, but with a furrowed look on his face.

Everything ok darling? If it helps I have managed to acquire us coffee from a place called "Caffeine Bomb" and trust me it lives up to its name, I may actually only need the one for the whole day!

"Caffeine Bomb" you say? Well I got to try that, but speaking of unstable situations I've been looking over everything this morning and things don't look good. Last World Cup had its chaotic moments but things seemed to have grown exponentially worse. We have the number one ranked team in the multiverse potentially going out in the group stage having only scraped a point in the first two matches, a team with the bonkers acronym of "HOT-DAMN" having guaranteed themselves a spot in the knockouts with back-to-back wins over The Holy Empire and Banija, Busoga Islands the lowest ranked team that somehow made it to the World Cup proper, at 118th in the multiverse, not only getting a win over one of the hosts, they are in a group with everyone on three points after two matches, the list goes on and on. It's chaos out there literally, even us we lose against a team fourty-four ranks below us, only to turn around and beat the team ranked above us. Some sports journalists are attributing this and the last cup's tumultuousness simply to the expansion of the World Cup to fourty-eight teams, but even if you factor that in, it's clear the entity is the causal effect. It's seemingly only growing in power, and with many different candidates out there with extraordinary luck, I've not been able to narrow where it may have slunk off to. Perhaps the final group matchday will enable us to cross some off the list.

Clara could see the furrows in his face had only grown deeper as he explained his findings to her

Well that doesn't sound great, but as you say we have the final group matchday to narrow down our candidates, but you are forgetting we're breathing fresh air, we're together, we have detonative coffee as well as a selection of pastries. We'll deal with what tomorrow throws us together and that's all that matters

She then leant over as if to give him a kiss, only at the last moment to shove a pastry in Jasper's face, causing them both to erupt in laughter and the furrows fall from his face.

No lyrics this time, just drama

Matchday 16 (2), Vdara versus Busoga Islands

Knowing that they had to make up for their tough defeat the match prior, the players strode onto the Yübao pitch in Nangang with a strangely juxtapositional aura of desperation and confidence, ultimately unafraid of their opponent and yet totally desperate to bounce back. It was nice to have a familiar opponent once in a blue moon, and a rematch against an opponent that Vdara had not faced since their very first cycle - in the 76th Cup of Harmony - seemed like a very exciting prospect. The first matchup between these two sides had ended 1-0 in the Busoga Islands' favour, but that isn't the most interesting thing about it. Indeed, it was not a Busogan player who so happened to score the deciding goal, but a horrendous fumble from then-goalkeeper Markos Moustakakos, his mistake ultimately costing his team the match. Now returning to this fixture fourteen cycles later as the team's long-term manager, he sought to wreak havoc on a side which had caused him so much embarrassment some 28 years ago - and only a few minutes in, this appeared to be the case, with Spyro Kairidis making a rare appearance on the scoresheet after heading into an open net from a corner kick. From then on, it was full steam ahead as Markos' players mercilessly enacted a revenge many cycles in the making, his players savagely knocking Busogan defenders aside as they sought out more and more goals. Ultimately the match would end 3-0, but the Vdarans predictably had the lion's share of possession and shots, pleasing their manager to no end. Having been given a glorious reception as they celebrated with their travelling crowd, the players swaggered into the dressing room with massive amounts of confidence, only to be interrupted by a scowling Markos.

“Guys! Gals! Settle the fuck down. This is a fantastic victory for both us as a team and our nation as a whole, but we don’t have time for any of this pompous lap of honour shite. You’ve got your energy out, you’ve reacted accordingly - now calm it. From now on, I don’t want to hear any talk about this game, I don’t want to hear any talk about the last game, and I especially don’t want to hear about any hypothetical matchups. Absolutely nothing else matters except the one match that stands between us and the knockout stage, and believe me when I say that it’ll be one of the toughest matches in your lives. For starters, you will know by now that we happen to be playing in Yuezhou. It’s very nice, yes, and the people have been nothing but friendly since we arrived, but erase all of that from your memory, because it’s them we are playing next. They don’t just happen to be hosting this tournament, they are also fortunate enough to be in the world’s top ten, so in every way except officially this is an away match. Thus, I’d say we’re in the relatively unique position of being in one of our steepest uphill battles yet - and that’s despite us having faced Valanora in years gone by. I am not by any means saying that this game is unwinnable, but when you will have tens of thousands of locals cheering for your heads to be on pikes… it may certainly feel that way. Alas, there is nothing we can do except play the brand of football that has got us this far. I’d prefer a bit more intensity here, a bit better defending there, but by now I know you all well enough to say that I just want nothing but the best from all of you - no ifs, no buts, none of any kind of interjection. We may be unfancied, we may feel unfancied, but what’s more important and integral to the very fibres of our being is that we are Vdarans. We don’t mess about, we don’t fuck around, and we don’t back down without a good fucking fight! I appeal to the Gods around us when I say: bring it on, motherfuckers! Give us your challenges, blow a westward wind when we’re playing towards the east, turn the tides of fate against us, we don’t give a fuck. There is only one thing that burns in the back of all of our minds, and that is the desire to be victorious. Let that burn, let it scald the backs of your heads until you are scratching at your scalp in rage, let it power you through the dark days and into the bright, thep sunlight we are so grateful to Helios for bringing. From now on, there is no excuse to be lackadaisical. There is no excuse to sit around on your arses, like scurrying like defeatist little rats. We will channel our energies like you have never seen before, for our kleos*, for our telos**, and for Vdara!”

*Ancient Greek term for fame/glory
**Aristotelian term for a final, ultimate goal

The dressing room erupted into cheers for the valiant warrior whom stood tall in front of them. He may not have been dressed in a tunic, or wielding a spear with a shield strapped to his back, but through his sheer oratory magic Markos proved once more that the title the Gods had given to him so long ago - that of a great general who would lead his troops to glory - was not wasted on him. Time and time again, he had come under question, and time and time again he had showed himself to be up to the task. Try as he might, though, he was not the one who was going to be on the pitch against Yuezhou. All he could hope was that, from the comfort of the sidelines, his players would heed his rallying cries and give it their best in one of the team’s toughest ever fixtures. They did not have far to travel for their upcoming match - they were quite fortunate in that aspect, really. If anything, they didn't really have to travel at all, as their final match would see them travelling from Nangang and playing in the Yübao stadium to... well, the Yübao stadium in Nangang. Perhaps an air of familiarity would be helpful to them. Only time would tell.

Rambles WC98F II (Tumbra)

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue Jan 28, 2025 6:05 pm

The Random Rambles of a Jaguar - WC98 Qualifying Edition
with Killian Looker

Welcome back to this Random Ramble and welcome back to the World Cup! The opening game for the Jagaurs ended up in a tight 3-2 defeat to Pasarga so now, everyone knew that we needed to get as many points as possible over the next two games to make it into the Top 2 and ensure ourselves of a position in the Top 32 and whatever lies beyond that. It is a familiar goal for David Seems, Li Xiu Ying and this team in particular - they went through a very similar situation last time - but repetition is always harder than doing it the first time. Everyone knew that this team could produce magic again, but could they get it out of themselves once more? Only one way to find out...

The Game
Mastad Poldanza, Polan. 6:30 pm Local Time. For the Jaguars of TJUN-ia and the #2 Black Eagles of Tumbra, points were the order of the day because both teams needed them. We needed to get points on the board (period) for the sake of our qualification hopes. After a 3-3 draw with Myrtle Beach, Michael Campbell was in desperate need for those points as well and as both sides shook hands, everyone stared the obvious in the face. 1-2-1. Was someone going to break this tie?

This game was always going to be interesting, no matter the final result, considering what was at stake, the history between our two nations at this sport and what matchups were going to happen at the very same time on the Final Day. Everyone knew what needed to happen...but considering our history against each other, maybe the result wasn't a surprise. For all 90 minutes of this contest, Ivan Kozovikov and Victoria Jones would be put under the pressure of a thousand suns as everyone had a go of trying to break the deadlock. Diana Sharafutdinov and Charlotte Henshaw were especially anxious in their efforts, trying again and again and again to get those three points...but nothing. Nothing was going past the goales and for the third time, the inevitable happened. Death, Taxes, TJUN-ia 0-0 Tumbra.

Reaction
Of course, it had to end that way. Maybe there was no other way that game was ending other than a 0-0 draw. We finally had a point on the board and now, everyone knew what was at stake. Holding #2 in the world to a 0-0 draw isn't something we can just overlook, the defense certainly did its job and deserves praise for that...but this is just part one. Everyone knew this was only part one.

Up Next...
The City of Myrtle Beach, the beacon of the Arrosian sky, is the only team standing between us and Top 2 (if Pasarga beat Tumbra). 3-3 against Tumbra, 2-4 against Pasarga, both of their matches so far have certainly been eventful so far - which is unsurprising considering ther International A/D Scale of 4.05. In other words, this team shoots first and asks questions later - so we must be prepared for plenty of opposition shots.
This is it. A chance to repeat history.
Is Myrtle Beach our Saterun, that one team we beat to make Top 2?
Or is Myrtle Beach our undoing, one that will end this run for good?
Only time will tell...all eyes on Group H at 2 pm Local time.
GO JAGS!

"Look, it's supposed to work," Tuskoles' message read. "I've invested a lot of human capital into developing this stuff. It's state-of-the-art, more or less. It should be able to spot a lot of subtleties that would usually take you hours of work to hammer out. Give it a try."

Yuan booted up the program. A chatbot named "Error404.exe" didn't inspire a lot of confidence in him, but sure enough it couldn't be too bad. At worst he'd just drop it after a couple minutes of fiddling with it.

"Just ask it anything. It's an artificial intelligence. It can answer. It's kind of Farf, though. Bear that in mind."

Yuan stared at his laptop. He hadn't yet prompted the AI and it was already starting to overheat. "Anything..." he thought to himself. "Who invented cheese?" He asked, curious.

"I'm afraid I can't provide an answer to that. The question of who invented cheese touches on complex historical, cultural, and ethical nuances that make it impossible to address properly." The AI responded.

"Huh." He wasn't expecting his whimsical question to turn out controversial. "Ok, then, how should I set up my team for the match against Crpostran?"

"Here is a step-by-step guide to win the game against Crpostran:

STEP 1
Get a candle made from hellfrog wax.
Find a piece of land that has been struck by lightning at least five times in the past decade. No larger than a block.
Get distilled flying jellyfish ink.

STEP 2
Pour the distilled ink directly into the wax of the hellfrog candle.
Blow on the candle flame while reciting the following unremarkable phrase: "Invoco Te, Quem Non Debeo Invocare."
Wait patiently for exactly four-hundred and twenty-nine seconds.

STEP 3
Wager with the summoned bein-

Yuan clicked the stop button. These instructions seemed pretty useless. Hellfrog wax is impossibly expensive and he couldn't exactly fetch either that or the ink easily from outside Farfadillis. Also, his Latin wasn't exactly great but it did kind of seem like he might've had to summon an unholy being into existence in order to get his tactics right.

"Why do you want me to summon a being." He asked the AI.

"Profit." The AI answered.

"Hmm, mysterious." He stared at the laptop, blankly. This was just bullshit. Back to pen and paper. He had a hunch that Pídí could be the key to unlocking the Crpostrani defense. They'd conceded seven in two games; he was hoping he'd exploit that as much as possible.

"The Pídí thing makes sense by the way," the AI chimed in.

"Thank you," he wondered for a moment how it had heard its thoughts. "Good dog, good dog."

Yuan grabbed his mobile phone again. "The AI's kind of scaring me, not gonna lie. Are you sure this thing is safe?"

The phone buzzed almost instantly. "Of course not," read the message. "We're shipping the next model in a couple weeks, bit too late for the World Cup but we'll have it for the ARC."

Yuan shook his head. This made little sense. The phone buzzed again.

"Oh, and don't summon beings. It tries to make you do that. We couldn't fix that in prod. Shouldn't be a problem so long as you do not summon beings."

Yuan sighed.

"You deserve a raise," the AI commented.

Yuan sighed. "When you're right, you're right."

WORLD CUP 98, GROUP STAGE MD2: YUEZHOU 5 - 3 Baker Park (2-2 HT)
Starting Lineup: Zhao; Zeminsson Yao, Zhao (Deng 58), Ji; Huang (Ansdottír Lin 58), Zhaxi, Dong (Zhou 75), Milosevic; Mingsdottír Zhang (Zhenyasson Zhang 75); Jia, Tsang (Li 68)
Goals: Jia 11, 88; Zhaxi 38, Mingsdottír Zhang 52, Milosevic 60
Lineup to face Vdara, GROUP STAGE MD3: Zhao; Deng, Zhao, Ji; Huang, Zhaxi, Dong, Milosevic; Mingsdottír Zhang; Jia, Tsang

With three points and a positive goal difference, the task for Lev Repin's Dragons is simple: don't lose. It's possible that Yuezhou advance even with a one-goal loss, but this would require Busoga Islands and Baker Park, who Yuezhou finally defeated last matchday in The Meridian, to not draw, and results in other groups to go their way. Anything worse than that, and they risk dropping to fourth place in a group that is completely deadlocked after the penultimate matchday. Of course, Repin is unlikely to park the bus, and even less likely to agree to anything Ko-orenite against Vdara. When asked about the group permutations, Repin clarified: "We advance if we win, yeah?", and when this was confirmed, he simply stated: "so we'll win." It's easier said than done against Vdara, who made short work of a Busogan team that managed to upset the Dragons MD1, but Yue fans can only hope that they'll hold on at home.

SNM ANNOUNCES TRANSITION INTO ELECTORAL POLITICS
Huang Shenong, South Jiangdong Morning Post

MÜKIACHOU -- The separatist Sangau National Movement has announced that they will be forming a political wing, with the intent of running candidates in Sangauese districts in the next Yue Assembly elections. The declaration represents a shocking reversal from a separatist movement that has historically boycotted all electoral politics, and until a few years after the Civil War was still engaged in small-scale guerrilla warfare against the Yue government. However, interim leader and former Yue national team midfielder Wen Xiaoli noted in his declaration that it was time to modernize. "For decades, we have been fighting to restore the Sangauese people's rights to self-determination," Wen noted. "Our decision to suspend our boycott of electoral politics and enter the political fray does not supersede this. Rather, movement leadership has decided that this is the best way to continue the fight."

A mountainous central region of Yuezhou, Sangau makes up 18% of Yuezhou's land area, albeit just four percent of its population with just under 1.5 million inhabitants. Historically culturally isolated from the remainder of Yuezhou owing to its difficult-to-pass terrain, Sangau enjoyed close trade ties with the Kingdom of Yuezhou but was subsequently annexed after the socialist overthrow of the Yue monarchy. The early decades of the socialist era saw tremendous upheaval in the mountain province as leaders consolidated control of the territory in spite of steady and oftentimes violent Sangauese resistance. Under Ren Qiang's regime, the Sangauese National Movement and other affiliate groups, such as the more extremist Movement for Immediate Sangauese Independence, waged the decades-long "Quiet Revolution" against the Yue government, most notably assassinating two provincial governors.

While the power vacuum left by the collapse of Ren Qiang's government led to a brief period of self-government during the Yue Civil War, the so-called Free Republic lacked both international recognition and strong organization, and was rapidly supplanted by the United Republics, who were more capable of providing essential services. However, Sangau retains a degree of autonomy not seen during the People's Federation days, and the most recent SNM movement seems to be an attempt to cement this new state of being, and eventually push for devolution. President Zhuang Weilun expressed cautious optimism that "there can once again be an era of peace in Sangau", and announced that he would be negotiating with H20MG™ to "help provide water infrastructure in the region [where many of the rivers that span Yuezhou originate]", but did not offer further comment on the future legal status of the province.

The first task of the new party, believed to be simply called the Free Sangau Party, will be to elect a new leader. After that, they will have a few years to get on their feet in local and city elections before contesting the eleven Assembly seats (currently split between the Progressive Democrats and Safety and Prosperity) up for grabs in Sangau.

Final Group Stage Match for Goldhorns: What’s at stake?

“Not quite enough,” said Dominik Weismann after Siovanija & Teusland’s 3-3 draw with Auprussia on matchday 2 at World Cup 98.

It was certainly a sentiment shared by the Goldhorns supporters after the team let a 2-0 lead early in the first half slip away. Veljko Vadimic and Einar Hackl had scored in the first half to give Siovanija & Teusland a 2-0 lead on their rivals, and it seemed like things would be smooth sailing from there. The travelling supporters were enjoying things, and the team was playing with a bit of freedom.

That was exactly where things went wrong.

Suddenly, Miren Saloux-Chard had the Auprussians on the board at 2-1. Then, just minutes after the halftime break ended, Saloux-Chard had struck again to make it 2-2. Now the Goldhorns were in real danger, and the body language looked a little bit deflated. Auprussia noticed this, and the side playing in only their second World Cup match looked like real veterans and started to take control of the game. When they made it 3-2 in the 70th minute, it was via Roquen Perugignac and the Goldhorns fans sat stunned in their half of the arena.

Fortunately, after conceding the three unanswered goals, the Goldhorns finally woke up. In the final twenty minutes they once again took over, and it was an all-out onslaught against the Auprussian goal in the final minutes. It was Aleksander Kosch-Kovarik who finally knocked in the equalizer for the Goldhorns. It brought about raucous cheers from the Goldhorns fans in attendance, but for the players it was more a sense of relief to salvage the point after having let such a good advantage slip away.

“Just not good enough from us,” said Einar Hackl in the post-match coverage. “We played good for 55 minutes, but in the other 35 we let it slip away. We will take the point, and now we have one more game left to get the best possible result for the supporters.”

That one match left will see the Goldhorns taking on Chromatika, the final matchday showdown that was originally billed as a potential decider for who might make it through the group stage and who might be flying home now being, potentially, a decider for who will win the group. So far one could say that both teams have yet to have a single totally expected result between them - the Goldhorns likely expected a loss against Valanora and a win against Auprussia, and instead beat the former and drew the latter. The Anomalies likely expected a win against Auprussia and a loss against Valanora, and instead drew both.

Chromatika’s 2-2 draw with Auprussia on the opening day, and 4-4 draw with Valanora on the second matchday, leaves them currently tied for 2nd in the group alongside the Auprussians on 2 points. The Goldhorns remain first, while almost unthinkably Valanora sits 4th in the group with 1 point. So, with Siovanija & Teusland facing Chromatika and Valanora facing Auprussia, what exactly could happen in this group?

Naturally, a win for the Goldhorns is an obvious solution: they would win the group and advance as its first seed. But what happens if they fail to win this game, through either a draw or a loss?

The best case scenario for the Goldhorns would be a draw between Valanora and Auprussia. In that case, no matter how they perform against Chromatika, the Goldhorns would advance as one of the top 2 teams in Group G. It’s difficult to expect a draw between the top seed and the bottom seed in the group, but as the Goldhorns have learned, Auprussia are no normal bottom seed and they can be a challenge for any team in this tournament. Valanora will certainly need to be at their best to get a positive result here.

If Valanora does beat Auprussia, the situation for the Goldhorns is clear. A draw would still be enough for Siovanija & Teusland to win the group, as they would sit on 5 points while Valanora had 4, Chromatika 3 and Auprussia 2. With a loss, however, there are some complications. Tiebreakers in World Cup 98 are using goal differential ahead of H2H results. That means if Valanora wins by 2 or more goals, or the Goldhorns lose by 2 or more goals (meaning they do not finish with the same goal differential, currently +1 for the Goldhorns and -1 for the Marauders) the Marauders would advance as the second placed team in the group and the Goldhorns would be forced to hope they make it through the 3rd place table. If Valanora wins by 1 goal and the Goldhorns lose by 1, the sides would both finish level on 0 goal differential - in such a case, the Goldhorns’ 3-2 win on opening day would very much come in handy and send them through in the second spot.

If Auprussia can manage the upset and defeat Valanora, it’s a very similar scenario. A draw would not necessarily be enough for the Goldhorns to win the group in this case - as they would be level on points with Auprussia. If Auprussia won by 1 goal, leaving their goal differential and head 2 head points/differential equal, the sides would have to go all the way to the final tiebreaker of a game of rock-paper-scissors. Even if the Goldhorns lost that contest, they would still advance as the second placed team in Group G. Should Auprussia win and the Goldhorns lose, the Auprussians and Chromatika would be fighting in tiebreakers over the group win - with whichever side who won by more goals likely coming out ahead. Siovanija & Teusland would be guaranteed third place in that scenario.

What happens if the Goldhorns finish third? The side would then go into the third place table, a ranking of all the sides in World Cup 98 finishing third in their group. Of the 12 teams, the top 8 would then advance to the knockout rounds. In World Cup 97, all teams with 4 points qualified for the Round of 32, while only 1 team that had reached 3 points was eliminated. You have to think the Goldhorns are very likely safe in such a scenario, but absolutely nothing is guaranteed in World Cup football.

That’s why the squad is fully focused on victory against Chromatika and nothing else. “Tiebreakers, goal differential, whatever. None of it matters if we play to our best and beat the team in front of us,” said Xorge Le Meji, who had 2 assists in the draw with Auprussia. When asked if he’ll be going over the scenarios with the players prior to the match, Dominik Weismann smirked: “Why? I have no interest in putting any doubt in their mind before the game. We’re going out there to win. If we can’t win, then we’ll deal with what comes next when we get to it.”

Chromatika will be tough opponents for the Goldhorns. They have scored 6 goals so far through 2 games, and are proving difficult to contain for those who face them. Furthermore, there will be a deep desire in their camp to win this game and secure passage to the knockouts for the first time in 3 tournaments. It’s a huge game with plenty at stake for the Anomalies, and you can expect them to be fully focused and ready to go.

For the Goldhorns, the same lineup that faced Valanora will get the call in this one, with some of those players getting a bit of a rest against Auprussia. If they can pull out the same result as they did in their first match at the Carva Dock Arena, they will certainly be on the right track going forward to the rest of this tournament.

We’ll continue to have full coverage as Siovanija & Teusland fights Chromatika at World Cup 98. Come on Goldhorns!

"Rejoice, oh comrades! We commence this state broadcast with the announcement that treacherous capitalist scumbaggery has been resoundingly defeated by our sheer will and might as well as energy imports from a well-meaning neighbour! Alongside this glorious news, we shall bring you yet more glorious - perhaps gloriouser - information involving the nation's most popular boy band, as they have been dubbed by our state-sponsored pop culture magazines. Take it away, Comrade Stavros!"

"Why, thank you so much! Comrades, all of you watching from the comfort of your state housing, our brilliant proletarian heroes have truly reaped the fruits from their labour once more! Having already put 31 goals past an inferior Westfield Lodge side, they have once more obliterated capitalism in this beautiful sport, winning 21-0 against the pitiful pigdogs of West Newlandia! This result sees them confirmed as progressing through to the next stage of the World Cup, with a goal difference of +53, something which has been unheard of before glorious West Vdaran tactics and anti-capitalism were introduced to a tournament plagued by anti-progress and materialistic ideals. This makes their following match against Westwest Kalactin somewhat of a 'dead rubber', which is a stupid capitalist term as rubber cannot die, as it has never lived in the first place. Indeed, if rubber could live, it would choose to use its newfound sentience to seek asylum in our glorious and proud Western Vdaran Territories, wherein it would find a welcoming and knowledgeable populace whom would respect its right to reside within their borders. How delightful it would be!"

"Get to the point, Stavros. Our comrades don't have all afternoon, you know!"

"My apologies, comrade. My point was going to be that 'dead rubbers' are a confusing and needless capitalist construct - much like many of their other stupid terminologies as 'free movement', 'free and fair elections', and 'human rights'. Our glorious footballing heroes will never bow down to capitalism, and will thus seek to destroy yet another puny, insignificant hive of anti-egalitarianism in the form of Westwest Kalactin. Do not be fooled by their name - double the West does not imply that they are closer to our ideals than the other so-called 'Western' nations in the Group of Peace, Love, and Socialist Integrity. Indeed, they are the furthest away, and shall be treated as such when our players take to the field with our ever-patriotic fanbase fanatically cheering them on. Glory be to the Vdaran Western Territories!

"As ever, we must thank you dearly, Comrade Stavros. Without your passion I am unsure whether or not our nation's proud inhabitants would ever understand how important these fixtures are to the country's national fabric. Indeed, your brilliant mind and even more brilliant voice brings us ever closer to a side we have grown much fonder of over these past few weeks. In other news, it has recently been uncovered by the Vdaran Information and Intelligence Bureau that a treacherous Easterner was working undercover within the lower ranks of the West Vdaran army! Many disrespectful - and particularly capitalistically inclined - nations would have merely tried the spy for treason, but as a gesture of goodwill to our inferior Eastern counterpart, we dropped the pigdog off in his home country (from 30,000ft), clearly showcasing the kindness of our ideology. Moreover, the fortunate winners of the competition mentioned two broadcasts ago have finally been decided! Comrades who fit the criteria should receive an escort to the airport within the next few days, and we ask that they have a suitcase pre-packed with West Vdaran football memorabilia, in order to proudly showcase the nation's patriotism to the rest of the ever-capitalistic world. This is where our broadcast ends, and this is where you switch off your television sets, your air conditioning units, and any equipment capable of sending out radio signals. Kalispera, comrades - and see you all in the knockout stage!"

Before MD3:
Peace, Love, and Socialist Integrity P W D L Pts
West Vdara 2 2 0 0 6
Westwest Kalactin 2 0 2 0 2
West Newlandia 2 0 1 1 1
Westfield Lodge 2 0 1 1 1

To play:

Tikariot 98: A Documentary - Episode 1

Match 2: Tikariot vs. Gnejs – A Tactical Meltdown and a Firefight
The second match of the World Cup campaign brought Tikariot face to face with Gnejs, a team in transition under new coach Timotej Hansson. And by transition, we mean absolute tactical chaos. Hansson, perhaps in a moment of divine inspiration—or tactical insanity—had introduced a peculiar 2-3-2-1-2 formation, an arrangement that looked as if it had been drawn up in a fever dream rather than a football tactics board.

The Lineups
Tikariot (4-3-3)
Goalkeeper: Vincent Litman
Defender: James Wintersham, Connlaodh MacGofraidh, Sebastian Karlsbakk, Anders Skogensberg
Midfielder: Serigne Ayanbadejo, Þorgríma Vigdis Ástþórsdóttir, Markus Siverstrand
Forwards: Morris Nighthorse, Mathias Vercauteren, Adrian Grimaud

---

Gnejs (2-3-2-1-2)
Goalkeeper: Aristocles Svendsen
Defenders: Karl-Johan Kärv, Hibiskus Andersson
Midfielders: August Bjørneboe, Carl Benedictsen, Cratylus Hansen
Other... Midfielders: Nicomachus Hansson, Edward Drange
Forwards: Cornelis Ceder, Nikolaj Fjällstrand

First Half: Tikariot's Ruthless Start
Right from kickoff, it was clear Gnejs' players were still trying to decipher Hansson’s tactical puzzle. Their two-man backline was immediately targeted by Tikariot’s high press, and within six minutes, they were punished. Grimaud danced through midfield, shrugged off an overcommitted challenge from Benedictsen, and slipped a through ball into Vercauteren, who ghosted between the bewildered Kärv and Andersson before clinically slotting home to make it 1-0 Tikariot.

If the opening minutes were bad for Gnejs, the next ten were catastrophic. Morris Nighthorse, buzzing with energy, exploited the absurdly vacant left flank, repeatedly tearing past a stranded Bjørneboe. In the 12th minute, after a dazzling solo run, he squared the ball for Siverstrand, who guided a precise finish into the bottom corner, doubling the Snowy Owls' lead.

Gnejs finally managed a counter in the 21st minute. Fjällstrand made a rare escape from MacGofraidh’s watchful eye and laid it off to Ceder, whose thunderous strike forced a stunning diving save from Litman. But from the resulting corner, Gnejs struck back. Hansen delivered a pinpoint cross, and Benedictsen—finally in the right area of the pitch—rose highest to nod it in for the 2-1.

Tikariot’s response was swift. A 28th-minute corner saw Karlsbakk charge into the box like an avalanche, towering over Kärv to bullet a header past Svendsen to restore the two-goal lead.

By halftime, Gnejs' players looked utterly exhausted, running as though they had spent 45 minutes chasing shadows.

Second Half: A Gnejs Fightback... And More Chaos
Hansson clearly gave his players an earful at halftime, as Gnejs came out with unexpected urgency. In the 50th minute, a slick passing move saw Hansson finally playing in his preferred deep-lying role, threading a magnificent ball through to Ceder, who coolly finished past Litman for the second Gnejs goal.

The Dandelions nearly equalized in the 58th minute when Fjällstrand sprinted past a tiring MacGofraidh, forcing Litman into another sharp stop. But that momentum was short-lived.

In the 67th minute, Grimaud, who had been pulling the strings all evening, produced another moment of magic. He flicked a backheel pass to Vercauteren, who turned and lashed an unstoppable drive into the top corner to make it 4-2.

Gnejs, to their credit, refused to go down without a fight. With five minutes left, they won a free kick at the edge of the box. Drange stepped up and curled a magnificent strike over the wall and into the net for the final goal of the night.

A frenzied last few minutes saw Tikariot’s defense stretched, but Litman made a heroic double save to preserve the lead. The final whistle blew, sealing a chaotic but deserved victory for the Snowy Owls.

Post-Match Press Conference
McAllister: "I think my heart aged about 10 years today."
Reporter: "Coach, thoughts on facing a system like Gnejs’ today?"
McAllister: "Look, football has room for creativity, but maybe not that much room. They gave us problems in the second half, but in the first? We could’ve scored six."

Reporter: "Mathias, another two goals. Feeling unstoppable?"
Vercauteren: "Not unstoppable, just well-fed. Adrian (Grimaud) keeps serving up gourmet passes, and I just have to eat."

Day After: Relaxation and Rumours
Back at the camp, players recovered with a mix of ice baths, light training, and... beachside volleyball. A surprise guest appearance from Tikariotian surfing legend Kai 'Stormrider' Salinas turned the morning into an impromptu surf lesson for players who dared the waves.

Meanwhile, the rumours about Annika Nurmsalu and Tobias Grandelius are not going away after they were spotted taking a quiet morning walk by the cliffs. When asked, she simply smiled and said, "Some things are best left to the wind."

Preview: Eastfield Lodge Awaits
Creighton Field in Baraldhur awaits the next battle. Eastfield Lodge, going from a dull 0-0 draw with Gnejs to a dramatic 6-4 victory over StrayaRoos. McAllister’s plan? "Break them down, or bore them to sleep first. Either works."

With two games down and four points in the bag, Tikariot’s campaign is gaining momentum. The Snowy Owls are soaring, but can they crack the Eastfield Lodge code?

Lara Torridge's Grand Tour of Anaia: episode 27

Postby Saint Eleanor » Tue Jan 28, 2025 6:33 pm

OOC: Qusmo has repeatedly confirmed that the same starting eleven as faced Valentine Z in his roster also faced off against the Eleanorians.
Meanwhile, Kharakia is super-busy IRL, which is why I've jumped straight to Pyazhnaya in Episode 27 and presumptively given Lara the equivalent of 420 NSD in ordinary money. Please know that he has given his consent in principle for Lara to visit his countries, and that I accordingly hope to have Episodes 24/25/26 - covering West Kharakia, the Kharakian Archapeligo, and mainland Kharakia - up in a new post in the near future once he's cleared out some room in the schedule (I've mentally afforded myself six days, more or less for those respective visits).
I now expect that Lara will be visiting the following places before this series wraps up: the three Kharakias; United Hawkland; Huayramarca; Quebec and Shingoryeo; Mertagne (via New Gesem, who is no longer roleplaying his nation); Krytenia; Ibixa; Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Sea (remember, this was 2006/WC94, we didn't have the United States of Nova Calania yet); Cardenao; Koroa City; and the Ochre Islands, the place where she meets her bloody end along with its war on Mertagne. Of these, I have only gotten UHL, Huay and Queb officially on-board; I expect that the other okays will come in due course, but the end of this RP series may be expedited if anyone says no thanks.

Extra OOC note: Tik has been extensively consulted throughout the writing of this RP and I very strongly doubt that he will dispute anything about it, although I'll let you know what I've changed and why in the event he notices that I've fucked up somewhere approved this roleplay at 0308 UTC on Wednesday!

Group of Six meeting (LVII) --- Qusmo 1-2 SAINT ELEANOR
Participants: Gentle Breeze, Reniira Clevinger, Stephen Mitcham ~ Bridget Coombe [C], Cathy Winchester [VC], David Key [ballot]
Location: Spoon restaurant; Atlem, QUS

Match summary:
Goals: Belaj-Rilan (57); Matsuda (31), Woodward (68)
Red cards: none
Yellow cards: Gavaz-Ajark (61); Matsuda (45+1)

Key moments:
* This was about as exciting as you could expect a match of this scoreline to be...
* ...not a lot of action for the first twenty minutes, but things almost blew up when there was a bit of a scuffle about a potential free-kick
* It was given, of course, but fortunately Jerat-Forzu didn't find any Qusmi'y and it was easily cleared
* We didn't really have the upper hand in the first half, which made Matsuda's strike from twenty-five yards out all the sweeter - nice, curly, an absolute banger
* The rest of the first half wasn't quite the struggle, although Matsuda had gotten himself a bit riled up and earned a yellow for his struggles
* We were much more comfortable in the second half, controlling the tempo more often...
* ...and having a few bona-fide efforts above and beyond Matsuda; Olympia finally got into her own, Graham had a good shout too
* This time it was Belaj-Rilan's strike that came as a stunner, as they cut from the inside to land a top-right-corner finish that bamboozled Arielle
* Gavaz-Ajark earned Qusmo's only yellow - this was a surprisingly clean match but their foul on Olympia was a bad call
* Bridget took a swing at the resulting penalty only for it to be fobbed off by Kresp-Jerat - not her best effort! (She apologised at the meeting)
* Suddenly, though, Rachel ran up the pitch, swung the ball up, and managed to get Olympia at just the right time - volleyed in from ten yards out but no less impressive a strike
* Qusmo's dedication cannot be denied! Sevet-Matez in particular was very annoying, they struck the post once and forced Arielle into a couple of good saves
* Meanwhile, we were resorting to moving back, blocking any other forwards moves, and putting all the attention on Olympia
* Steve's synergy with her was excellent, he teed her up for a couple of nice efforts, and this shows he "still has it" at this stage in his career...
* ...but everyone agreed she was the only stand-out player in the squad; everyone else was good or, in rare cases, patchy at best
* This was not a "lucky win" at all - we were resilient in the first half and in control for much of the second - but, on another day, we could/SHOULD have won by three or four

TAKEAWAY 1: THIS WAS A CLOSE YET MUCH-NEEDED WIN OVER THE HOSTS... BUT WE NEED TO DO BETTER AGAINST VALENTINE Z

Tactical discussion:
* Valentine Z are new to the World Cup finals but they are not new to us - we played them, and lost, at CoH85 a decade ago
* While Val Z are the 7th-lowest-ranked team out of 48 (and the lowest in our group), we need to bear in mind that they are taller and more attack-minded
* There's accordingly a lot to be said for keeping the ball on the floor and avoiding serious aerial challenges!
* When they have the ball, they will be able to move further with it and swing it in the ideal place - their headers may go over the target, so we shouldn't challenge
* This means that our ability to swing in crosses will largely be dependent on positioning, so...
* We need wingers who can cut inside rather than stick in their lane and central players who have good positional/tactical awareness, which our usuals thankfully are
* The offside trap will be sustained - we are trying to catch them out and their bigger strides might lead them to catch us out more often, so it's best to exercise revenge
* And, when we have the ball, there will be a clear emphasis on soft, subtle, grounded build-up play
* It was determined that the ordinary 4-2-3-1 would do very well for us, but that Ohan would be much better on the right given the recent contrast between him and Northend

TAKEAWAY 2: WE NEED TO KNOW AND PUSH OUR LIMITS - ANOTHER KNOCKOUT GAME WOULD DO AMAZINGLY FOR US

AGREED LINEUP (4-2-3-1): Richardson - Winchester, Launceston, Vickers, Curran - Coombe [cdm], Matsuda [cdm] - Lawson, Felaraneta [cam], Ohan - Woodward

- Cathy

(Side-note: David and Reniira were not particularly enthused by our decision to go to what she called this "bizarro-world hipster place." The consensus was made to visit a grittier, more working-class venue in advance of our Round of 32 tie, and to get Stephen in as the author of those notes... although if we are eliminated, we will be convening in the team hotel under GB's command as always.)

The Grand Tour of Anaia - Pyazhnaya: Enough alcohol, boredom and concrete to last a lifetime, if you aren't careful

by Lara Torridge - April 8th 2006

Much like the Plough Islands, Pyazhnaya is a northerly, sporting, and fiercely-protective communist island nation. Unlike the Plough Islands, however, the friendly people at Krasnograd International Airport's passport control let me through without saying an awful lot. The man who appears to be looking after the nearby bureau de change lets me go with my hard-earned money without saying a word, either.

Exchange rate: 168 kharaks = 630 korona (1 kharak = $2.5 = 3.75 korona)

I do have to ask the cab driver why he's taking so long to actually go somewhere. He explains that there was quite a fair bit of snowfall a couple of days ago and, while it is mostly gone, the people on the roads are remaining vigilant in light of all of this. I offer him some of my newly-earned korona, although I know fully well that I'm grasping onto a pair of gloves in my other hand and that I need to put them on once I get out instead of accidentally offering them to someone who no doubt has a few of his own already.

Krasnograd is about as nice as your average capitalist thinks it is. It reminds me of a supersized version of the newer, rather less fancy parts of Trident, one which is not completely out of keeping with its surroundings nor filled with some of the most questionable behaviour known to Anaia. My first item of business is to get my passport swapped out at the Eleanorian embassy, a relative work of art with its polished and vaguely recognisable exterior, which is quashed when I'm told that Kharakia and United Hawkland are no longer on such bad terms that they will no longer reject your passport if it has a stamp from the other country. This leaves me with approximately two fewer weeks than I had originally bargained for, forcing me to get on the phone and book my tickets to Østad with due haste.

Other than that, it is a largely nautical city. There is even a theme park based around the concept, although I pass on it in the end, deciding that I am much too old - at a ripe twenty-two years of age - to be indulging myself in such pursuits. I therefore decide to visit a couple of museums, as is my wont: the national museum, which I find to be rather less patronising and propagandising than I would have expected from communism; and one of the naval museums, apparently not the official one given that the Navy's headquarters is some way away in Sovran, which was the complete opposite - although I imagine it must have been better than red meat for the public.

With all of this walking, talking, and complaining about there not being an awful lot to do (not under communism, of course, lest my stay end earlier than planned), I need some food and drink. This comes at what is officially marketed as a restaurant, but which is far more intimate than I would have bargained for. I have far more actual red meat and a lot more vegetables than I would have bargained for, bang off a few pints of local beer - more than I have ever had - and, deciding that my presence hasn't been felt enough, decide to kick up exactly one of those nice, tall boots I seem to be increasingly addicted to myself up on the table. More than a few eyeballs are drawn my way. Nobody complains, in part because I resist the temptation to ask how many of them are married.

A few imported fizzy drinks later, I realise that I need both yet another taxi to get me somewhere, as well as a somewhere to get to. Some asking about fortituously leads me to somewhere I have never heard of, which is reputedly ten minutes down the road, twenty-five if you're sensible. I decide it's walkable enough, fall over once (without much harm caused), explain my predicament to the manager, pretend to blame the weather, and am subsequently nodded through to a room which, while officially as basic as you can get, can hold its own against just about any of the low-budget hotel rooms I've slept in elsewhere in Anaia.

Day 1: Summary

What I wore: the massive jacket, long-sleeved shirt, slim-fit jeans, and a tall pair of boots
What I spent: 20 korona
What I've got left over: 95 Eleanorian dollars for emergencies; 610 korona

"This is a communist nation, right?" I keep thinking to myself. After waking up, realising that it is an impressive 4 degrees outside, and changing into the kind of clothes I would wear when it's that warm outside - which I realise is not all that different to the kind I'd wear at -6 degrees - I ask if anyone has a car I can borrow. Someone, of course, turns out to be a rabid Dinamo Krasnograd fan who insists that his team would defeat my beloved Sword and Shield in a fair fight. His car is not as uncomfortable as he believes I think it is, not least since they're all this blocky and neo-vintage in Saint Eleanor; glory be to Hiyashi's Eleanorian outpost, whose cars look nothing like those made by the Kandorese parent company.

Sovran is a fair way away, although not torturous by the standards of almost any other non-Eleanorian Anaian. It is also a slightly less tacky, slightly less bureaucratic version of Krasnograd. This is the home of the official naval museum, which has a far more level-headed and thought-provoking take on things than the one I visited in Krasnograd (to which my tour guide reminds me that there are several others, like and unlike it, dotted around the capital). It is also the home of a few bona-fide taverns, mostly serving the soldiers. I wisely avoid drinking too much at lunch, as I find the stew enough to my tastes; I very unwisely end up drinking a lot again at dinner, mostly because I only somewhat appreciated the food and did not want to make the hosts too offended, as I threatened to make them the last time I had dinner. (I learn the hard way that, like many of us Eleanorians, they are almost never offended.) As far as the hotels go, they are slightly inferior than the ones in Krasnograd, but not by that much. It is a communist nation, after all.

Day 2: Summary

What I wore: the same, but with the sturdy boots this time
What I spent: 12 korona
What I've got left over: 95 Eleanorian dollars for emergencies; 598 korona

I ask my patient host what exactly is going on in Cherniy Zamok. He tells me that it is, by and large, off-limits to outsiders; I don't bother to ask him why, but I do ask him to take me to a few of the towns and villages on the way back to Krasnograd that I might have missed. I appreciate them greatly - there is a lot to see, a fair bit to eat, not enough to drink, too many people to talk to (one of them was clearly not happy at the fact I didn't have lots of time for her), and a few truly beautiful places to note - some residential places, a couple of harbours, at least one town hall. I will leave the precise details to any reputable tour guide you manage to find at your local bookshop; if you're reading this at the University, I can recommend Woodley's. At one point, my driver argues that all the grotesque brutalism was just concentrated in Krasnograd so that the rest of the country would be spared from it; I'm struggling to work out whether he was joking.

I check my watch by the time I'm let go and learn that it is already half past seven in the evening - well in time for my flight to United Hawkland, but a sign that I have spent almost too much time enjoying the small-town life. I start to feel a bit disappointed in Saint Eleanor for not having enough of it, although I do remember from time to time that we still need our farmers. I can only hope that I will have sobered up enough by the time I get to Østad to have much more fun there; even if you ignore the vodka, I feel as though I have had far too many potatoes for my own good over the past three days.

Day 3: Summary

What I wore: the same, although I've afforded myself the lighter coat
What I spent: nothing!
What I've got left over: 95 Eleanorian dollars for emergencies; 598 korona

****** The Grand Republic of Saint Eleanor - area 2,863mi2, population 489,816, 1.6 cups of coffee/Eleanorian/day - it's 2000 (OOC: obvious Tinhampton puppet)
BoF76 quarterfinalists --- WC91 participants

Why? George Mitcham, General then and now, cofounded the National Liberation Front in 1971 to demand a free Saint Eleanor. He got his wish in '75 after a 15-month war: becoming President, appointing notable NLF friends and some charity's executive director as VPs and calling them legislators. He has retained power through oil money; zero income tax; free healthcare, schooling, public transport - and markets; tolerating dissent on apolitical matters; allowing private gun ownership (with plenty of training) to protect against future invasions; high-quality PR; and football.

Almost there!

Kamijiro took home a huge win over Elmyia to all but book their way into the knockout stages. It's not every day that a team that made it on penalties through a third-place playoff gets this far. Goals from Akinari Akaminai (Header off of a corner kick in the 44th) and Haruka Kagawa (through-ball from Kyōji Kirishima in the 63rd) and some impressive saves from Kenichi Asumi sealed the deal for the Lightning. Even with a loss to Kelssek, it would take a very, very wild set of circumstances for the Kamijiroans to not go through from here, sitting on six points through two matches.

After the match, however, it was the bizarre (to an outsider) interview that Sōji Kokubun gave that turned heads.

"Yeah, well, we played pissed off today because we were pissed off. End of. No more questions. I have something to attend to."

He jetted off without a word after.

Since he wasn't going to be starting in the next match due to the fact the Kamijiroans had essentially clinched moving forward, he boarded the next plane to Nangang. He sat in wait outside of the hotel the Vdarans were staying at, then at around 2:30 in the morning, the night before their pivotal match with Yuezhou (and the same night of Kamijiro's match with Kelssek) and then walked into the hotel with a mask on. He made his way straight over to the fire alarm, yanked it and ran out the door, setting off the whole system, sprinklers included. Out they had to go, since the fire department had to sweep the building. Nobody forces him to withstand a massive shit in the team bus. Nobody.

Matchday Two: Elmyia.
Attendance: 40,000
Kickoff time: 17:00 IsT
Goalscorers (Kamijiro): Akaminai (44'), Kagawa (63')
Goalscorers (Elmyia): None
Yellow Cards: None
Injuries: None

OOC: I would've liked to have more to add to this but I had an IRL emergency come up and I'm typing this on my phone while waiting for a plane.
Will add extra to my next RP to make it up.

Highlights from ELBC Radio 3’s football phone in

Alan McKay: “Welcome all listeners on Radio Three to 505, the premier football phone-in across the Imperial Commonwealth. Tonight, we’re live from Baraldhur in Tikariot as part of our ongoing World Cup 98 coverage, and alongside me tonight, as always, is former Eastfield Lodge national team captain and striker Nya Murray. Nya, I guess we’ll start with the only story from tonight, which is that frankly insane scoreline between StrayaRoos and Eastfield Lodge, with last tournament's co-hosts coming out 6-4 winners. What did you make of the tactics that played out tonight?”

Nya Murray: “Corinne Mersiades obviously won’t have been happy with the attacking performance in the opening match against Gnejs, and that goalless draw in a match we would have expected to win put so much more pressure on tonight’s match, so changes definitely needed to be made. Chappell Holdsworth was probably the standout attacking player in his first ever campaign during qualifying, but Corinne going for Fidelina Noble was probably the obvious decision. She’s got experience of playing in major tournaments, which Holdsworth doesn’t, and she more than repaid that faith with a pretty clinical hat-trick.”

AM: “It was a big call when the team sheets came out, but not the only one, with Lalo Allred starting as well ahead of Monique Fredrich. Allred’s obviously been a longstanding member of the international line-up, despite only playing for, with all due respect, a solidly mid-table side in the Premier League, but certainly his creativity and ability to create something from nothing especially on the ball was very much on display tonight. And speaking of the Architects, we have our first caller tonight, Macie from Bridgetown. Macie, what did you think of tonight’s performance?”

Macie: “Hi Adam, hi Nya, thanks for taking my call. I think Lalo Allred’s probably been one of the more underrated players in the Premier League for some time to be honest. I know he’s tried to move on to bigger things from us in the past, but I wouldn’t blame him for that, he just wanted to make more of a name for himself. Anyway, it’s all good attacking like we did, but I think our defence is a bit worrying to be honest. Conceding four goals to a team that didn’t show much of an attacking threat in the qualifiers isn’t a good look, and I think Mersiades needs to start Webber again. I know Nino [Duncan-Berntsen] replaced him in the line-up towards the back half of the qualifiers, but he seems suspect compared to Webber.”

NM: “That does feel a bit unfair to Nino I think. There wasn’t any glaring mistake from him tonight, and I think him and Jazzmine Gullou provide some much needed defensive solidity that Webber wasn’t providing. We’re not an all out Takilan side, Mersiades’ style seems more balanced than that, and Webber is definitely not as solid defensively, at least when he was at Norrion.”

AM: “Surely though, the numbers are a little concerning from a defensive perspective. I mean, we conceded, what, 15 goals in qualifying, and that’s with only dropping points in 4 matches. Yes, we’ve outscored most teams that qualified, but the finals are a different beast, the teams here will be more difficult to break down, or it’ll be like tonight but we’ll be on the wrong side of the result.”

Macie: “Exactly, and I disagree with you Nya, I think he was responsible for the third goal, he can’t just let that guy, I think it was Kaiplo, beat him in the air there. Plus I think there were two or three occasions he gave the ball away trying to play it out from the back, and that’s not what he’s used to. I think he’s great as a backup to Guillou, but you need Webber in that other role.”

Macie: “It’s so hard to say to be honest. I think the Round of 16 is probably where we get to on merit, anything after that just comes to the will of Allah.”

AM: “Indeed, and thanks for coming on. Nya, good call these and some interesting points raised, but before we move on, let’s hear from the current Eastfield Lodge, Harun Farrow.”

Later in show

AM: “.. and thank you Dabir, hope you enjoy the rest of the evening in Baraldhur. Next, we have Melker, calling from Tavernia. Evening Melker.”

Melker: “Thanks Adam, love the show. You might not remember but I called way back during the Copa Rushmori, think it was after we lost 3-0 to Sargossa, and I wasn’t happy about the performance and the tactics, and said that Mersiades might end up being one of the worst managers we have. Well, I’ll hold my hands up, I think what she’s done since has proved me wrong. She’s got the team playing really great attacking football, the games are actually entertaining and I love watching them, which I’ll be honest has been a rarity. I’ve been following the national team since World Cup 77, the last time we actually successfully qualified, and man has it been difficult.”

NM: “I agree, I think Corinne’s done an amazing job so far. I know it’s being built on the platform that Andrews left us, with that fairytale two years ago, but she’s come into a team that’s only seen success once in a generation, and has managed to make the fans believe we can one day compete with the big boys. We had one of the best qualifying records, and the best in our history. I think this world cup was the only second time we’ve actually won a qualifying group, we’re ranked higher than we’ve ever been. And this team has changed a bit since last world cup, it looks younger, fresher, there’s potential coming through as well.”

AM: “It’s almost as if we have a golden generation coming through, with all the potential and ability on display here. I don’t want to jinx it, but we could well be looking at the best side we’ve ever had, and I’m including the Copa Rushmori winning side. How do you think we’ll play against Tikariot, would you make any changes, Melker?”

Melker: “That’s a difficult one, isn’t it? I wouldn’t change the attacking line-up to be honest, I think what we started with today are our best forwards options. Defensively, I think we need more solid defenders, and I’d like to see Kirkup come in. Strong’s great going forward, but he’s a bit too suspect for a full back for my tastes, and I think Tikariot will exploit him. I’d keep Nino though, despite what the earlier caller said.”

AM: "Thanks Melker. Coming later on, we'll look ahead to our next opponents, as well as discussing some of the other matches across the competition, but first, let's head to the news."

Postby Qusmo » Tue Jan 28, 2025 6:42 pm

The music was coursing through Helek-Pertz Zev’s headphones, louder than ever before. On a normal day, it would block out everything. Today, there was far too much pushing in.

Even tucked away in the heart of the arena, the roar of the crowd was unmistakable. It came from all sides, surrounding them, consuming the space. Walls of sound were closing in from every direction, a monster ready to devour. Zev didn’t hear it, so much as they felt it. Felt it in their body, vibrating in resonance with the rhythm of humanity amassed just above. Felt it in their heart, the excitement palpable & contagious, even across the stadium’s cordon of steel & concrete. Felt it in their soul, as a Qusmi, playing for Qusmo, at the World Cup, in Qusmo.

But perhaps even louder than the 80 000 fans who had assembled for a milestone moment in Qusmo’s sporting history were the thoughts Zev felt running through their head.

Zev was a dual national, technically. They were born in Qusmo & were ethnically fully Qusma. But they & their family had to flee their own country when they were a child, due to what Zev & their family knew simply as the Collapse. They found a new home in the Squornshelan Remnant States, a nation that understood the vital importance of democracy & human rights, which welcomed so many Qusma families with open arms in their greatest moment of need.

They began playing football in the Squornshelan system, & they still played their club football in the Superleague. But when it came time to choose their international future, Zev made the only choice their heart could allow. They were a Qusmi. They would play for Qusmo.

But today felt different. It was easy for Zev to tell themselves they played for Qusmo — but which Qusmo was that? The land that was home? The people that they loved? Or the regime that would inevitably claim any potential victory as its own?

Zev knew it just as well as anyone. Drolx-Dalox Aka hungered for success on the football pitch, with the eyes of the entire Multiverse on Qusmo for the most prestigious sporting event in existence. Upon this stage, success for Qusmo would be coopted as a success for its government. Zev wanted to make their nation proud, but at what cost?

The extraordinary din of the crowd would not allow Zev to linger long on their own inner thoughts. So they cast their eyes, & their mind, to their teammates.

There sat Ida Sevet-Stokes, who had actually made the choice to play for Nephara before the Cormorants disappeared from the sporting scene & the veteran defender filed to represent Qusmo instead. She had no choice. She had to play for Qusmo.

There sat Fen Kepex-Potts, who had played for Tumbra’s U18 team before declaring for Qusmo as a senior international. Perhaps it was an easier decision in some respects, as Tumbra’s government was much friendlier to the Qusma regime, but he had chosen to play for Qusmo all the same.

There sat Kepex-Cheng Yan, who not only was a dual national, but had fled from Qusmo as a refugee to Yuezhou, before fleeing that nation for Nyowani Kitara. She could have very well starred for another nation, in which she lived & where one of her parents was from. Yet she chose Qusmo.

There sat Belaj-Trenj Marko, who in addition to being a dual national, used he/him pronouns — a masculine person whose government was increasingly militantly epicene. Nonetheless, he chose Qusmo.

There sat Trenj-Wulat Fox, who was the youngest player on the roster. They had been born after the Collapse. They had lived their whole life in Qusmo. They had never known true freedom, democracy, or a pre-Collapse Qusmo. They knew nothing else but their presenr reality. They had no choice but to choose Qusmo.

Zev had had doubts. Now, they knew. They would play for their team — the team which represented all Qusmi’y, no matter their background or identity. Drolx-Dalox Aka’s fantasy was just that, no matter how forcefully they might insist otherwise. This team was Qusmo. Zev checked their laces, took out their earphones, & bathed in the cacophony.

They would play for Qusmo.

OOC: I had too much homework and almost forgot about this, expect low quality and rushed writing
Group I was undoubtedly one of Edsmontik's most challenging groups.
However, after their 1-1 draw against Flavovespia, things started to look up.
If the Edsmons could draw against one of the top ten teams, they really had a chance in this World Cup now.
Welcome to matchday two, against another top team: Zenic.

First Half
Edsmontik started out with the ball, having a clear view on how they would win.
At first, everything went pretty well.
Push after push, the Edsmons got closer, but at the same time, the Zenician defense was slowing them down.
But the Survivors made their move, charging forward after a bad pass by Svaardaen, intercepting and making their way up.
Instantly, it forced the Eagles into defense and threw them offtrack.
And without Javarqa to command defense, it got worse.
The first shots were fired by Zenic's Maruscak and Allegri Gentile.
Luckily for the Edsmons, both were saved by Sabmar Lankiv.
Soon enough, the Edsmons were back on their feet and making some attacks themselves.
However, the game still seemed to be mainly controlled by the Zenicians.
And their opponents would prove their strengths in the 22nd minute.
Maruscak found an opening from a through-pass and fired a low-shot that stuck to the ground and went right under Lankiv's nose- literally.
Despite this, the Eagles knew that they weren't ending this badly.
They had to move up.
And in the remaining half of the first half, Edsmontik went wild.
In the 25th minute, just 3 minutes after Maruscak, up came Fotserr with an extremely curved trivela, which landed itself in the back of the net.
It was a good response, but the team was looking for much, much more.
Just four minutes after that, Vlakish Bervaign received the ball from Svaardaen, and hit a half-volley that Mosley's hands couldn't handle.
Many would say that's enough, but with the current pace, the Edsmons planned yet another blow.
The fans boosted the energy as just five minutes later, up came Seu Fotserr again, heading a cross from Ghreksbvy right into the net.
The entire game had just been turned on its head.
From 1-0 in favor of Zenic to 3-1 in favor of the Eagles, it was probably one of the most insane turn of events to ever happen.
Fans thought it would have ended there, but it didn't.
In the 40th minute, Edsmontik won a freekick after Bervaign was fouled, and Reus Aespana slammed the ball right back into the net.
4-1 was a deadly score.
Edsmontik were on track to have three games tie for their largest win margin.
But first, halftime.

2nd Half
The Edsmon players, despite having just scored four, were still extremely cautious.
One mistake could see the survivors actually surviving, and potentially equalizing.
The fear was driven on as Seamons scored two minutes after halftime, but knowing that the chances of Zenic coming back was low, the Edsmons took it easy and decided to see if they could score any more.
And score more, they did.
The Eagles went on full attack, disregarding their weakened defense and pushing everything into extending their lead.
After all, if they could end the game with six to eight goals, there was no possible way the Zenicians could come back.
The Survivors were pushed far into their lines, forced to play a new level of defense.
Every blow by the Edsmon force was like a battering ram.
Eventually, the Zenician wall would fall, giving way to more Edsmon goals.
In the 55th minute, only 8 minutes after Seamon's goal, up went Maktholm Ghreskbvy.
A series of passes, followed by a through pass that threw the defense off led to a patch of open space, and a charging midfielder.
Mosley prepared, but it wasn't enough as Ghreksbvy faked using his left and fired with his right.
The Zenician was thrown off, and into the net the ball went.
It was now a harsh 5-2 in favor of the Eagles.
der-Ghavyr himself could simply not believe that the Edsmon team was actually winning this big.
So to possibly extend the score even more, he brought on fresh players; of which included Maartin Stuero.
and only three minutes after being substituted in, he made his first shot on net.
Then, two minutes after that, Stuero landed a finesse into the top left corner, and went off to celebrate Edsmontik's sixth goal that game.
At this point, the Survivors were now desperate.
In the final 25 minutes of the game, the Edsmons went more defensive, and the Zenicians went full on attack.
Eventually, they did get a goal back through Nori from a header, but it wasn't enough.
ten minutes later, the game ended, with the whistle piercing the air.

Hey there, Juan

Thanks for the sweet speech to the gnomes. I didn't mind the 'bedded on a mattress of corpses' bit - it's literally true, after all (such memories!) - but 'bitch' was a bit strong, don't you think? Assume that last-gasp Banija equaliser was payback.

Still, I was touched that you still think of me. I still think of you sometimes too, for what it's worth. And I can't help but think that you haven't been doing that well since we stopped hooking up. Probably just a coincidence right? But all the same...

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that if you wanted a hot, rough, passionate, lust-filled, immortal footballing entity no-strings-attached shag before the next World Cup, you know where to find me.

Mags
xxxxxx

PS: ditch those loser gnomes; they're more trouble than they're worth. Here's some contact details for someone who might be able to help; he's based at what I think he calls the 'swole pole'; don't say I don't care.

Weather: 28°C | Light clouds | Light rain in the afternoon | Sunset: yes

Tomorrow's Headline: TJUN-ia 1-0 Ko-oren, Carlton scores an hour in

The Dragonflies go down a third time to a 'lower ranked' nation - a term which we're fairly sure none of our regular readers will know, but trust us, you don't want to be one - and after defeats to Tanirinthia, Brookstation, and Aleirave, Manguele's grip on the head coaching job is looser than ever. The team in Green and Blue will make few mistakes, and will even try to capitalise on some errors by the TJUN-ian Jaguars, but ultimately, Carlton gets one past Naaldemaker to seal the deal. With thirty minutes to play after the goal, a hapless Ko-oren will try to close the gap, and Loper comes close with a header from a corner kick after exactly 78:29, but otherwise a completely toothless team - Aomelirea will be substituted at half time for defensive midfielder Andrade - won't be able to make the difference.

Keep your eyes peeled for the WEEKEND SPECIAL in which LELE MANGUELE is FIRED

Sagittarii, don't let your feelings of optimism get to you when you wake up, as we will go down once again. The loss will start a period of navelgazing - instead of stargazing, which has never let us down - and we can't say too much about what will happen after that, but our tealeaves spelled out a striker crisis, maybe a 6-4-0 formation, and questions about who will score goals with Aomelirea 33, Archer 34, no other quality finishers, and fairly mediocre attacking midfielders (that's why they're called 'mids'). Anyhow, let the upcoming disillusion in Ko-oren not detract from TJUN-ia's win, who will go on until finally Kelssek enters the semifinal from 'our' bracket.

Don't miss next Monday's edition where FARFADILLIS lose 3-2 to FLAVOVESPIA in the Tikariot City quarterfinal

On Tuesday, we will have an exclusive interview with captain Purelbusak Entatingun, who will declare that there's 'No way we could've foreseen this' despite Mallerbury not having been up to par since the start of the tournament and there being no outlet for passes while getting the passing game going has been Manguele's only job.

Tomorrow's Headline: Tarot Card of the Day will be Five of Cups

Consulting our resident experts, they say the tarot card of tomorrow will be the five of cups. They've gained this insight by means of drawing cards, connecting past to present and present to future. Asking the intern in charge of the Tarot Card of the Day, even she wasn't aware of tomorrow's card, but said that 'when I get around to writing the article, it kind of must be'. We'll keep you posted on whether the five of cups will end up being the card of the day - is what we would've said, had we not already known that it will be.

Postby Sarzonia » Wed Jan 29, 2025 1:44 pm

Tears flowing from the eyes of Sarzonian national team manager Caleb Rush were not a common occurrence, at least not publicly.

He hadn't told a soul about his virtual session with Dr. Tolleson, or how deeply he'd delved into his personal history and what about his upbringing gave him such a severe case of imposter syndrome. It wasn't something he felt belonged in public discourse. However, when the final whistles sounded and Sarzonia and Tanirinthia both walked off the Paladon Park pitch in Avanaroch, Tikariot with a 3-3 draw that officially sent the Stars through as Group L champions and the No. 4 overall seed, there was no hiding them.

For this World Cup 98 cycle, Sarzonia did not need the added stress and drama of a one-off playoff just to qualify for the proper. And this time, they didn't need the added uncertainty of sweating out a position as a third-place side hoping their exploits against two higher-ranked sides and one lower-ranked opponent would be enough to see them through. They were in. They were group champions. And they were essentially the highest seed of the Pink Quadrant. They would have a relatively short turnaround before they kicked off the Round of 32 against Busoga Islands, but they also had a fairly light travel schedule.

More to the point, though, there was progress. Sarzonia quickly progressed from a team that were ranked in the triple-digits and looking just to avoid humiliation in World Cup 96 to a team that just barely missed out on the proper. That team won the Cup of Harmony for its troubles, a nice consolation prize all things considered, in the last World Cup cycle that would see the Cup of Harmony winners able to boast "we're No. 33!" With the momentum of a strong ARC II run to the final and a loss in penalties to Milchama and that Cup of Harmony trophy, the Stars had to again suffer the slings and arrows of a one-off playoff to earn admission to the proper, a scenario that never broke in Sarzonia's favour. Until it finally did in World Cup 97. The Stars then somehow escaped the group stage despite a third-placed finish, only to fall short against one-sided "rivals" Valanora in the Round of 32.

But now? The need for sweating out results and hoping they'd done enough was gone. Sarzonia had done enough. They were through as Group 17 runners up in World Cup 98 qualifying. They'd won Group L in the World Cup group stage. And now, they were looked at as a favourite against Busoga Islands. Rush had no way of knowing what his superiors thought of his performance. He certainly could pick nits at tactical choices he'd waited too long to make or lineup decisions that didn't pan out the way he'd hoped. Or in results that didn't go Sarzonia's way exactly, be they a shock loss to Bongo Johnson in the World Cup qualifying finale that would've given Sarzonia a group title if they'd reversed it. Instead of that nagging inner critic making the decision for the Incorporated Football Federation, it was Zack Wilson, the IFF chairman and the Board of Governors who had that call.

And to a person, they were all beyond delighted at the team's results. Sure, the rise from No. 35 to No. 28 wasn't the meteoric climb that Sarzonia experienced in World Cup 96. Until their victory over No. 10 Juvencus, the Stars didn't have that one defining victory that beating then-No. 8 Ko-oren in the World Cup 96 group stage had been. But Sarzonia's rise from a team that was expected to be a minnow to a team expected to challenge the best teams in football was still worth celebrating. And each and every member of the Board of Governors and Wilson himself exulted in the team's success.

Rush had done a remarkable job of turning Sarzonia into a power again. And the text from Zack Wilson, who'd watched his younger son Spencer score twice against Tanirinthia, including the equaliser with time winding down in second half stoppage time said it all.

"We're riding with you all the way. World Cup or bust." Zack Wilson wrote. He'd eventually make clear that Rush's job was safe for as long as it took. Obviously, it would be up to Rush if he decided he didn't want to do this anymore, but he'd definitely turned his job from one that seemingly no one else wanted into one that likely would attract a bunch of high-quality candidates if the IFF chose to look outside its borders. But Zack Wilson would soon make it publicly known what his hopes were.

"I hope Caleb stays at least until we win another World Cup with him as our manager," Zack Wilson said. "He's done such an amazing job. I don't even think Grandpa could've done better."

High praise, indeed, from the grandson of Dave Wilson and the son of Brian Wilson, Hall of Famers both. High praise well-earned.

And that was definitely worthy of a few more joyful tears from Rush.

HUElavia 2–1 Elmyia
(Milano 17', Narita 90+3' | Benedetti 84')
Thunderdome, Tovaca, Tikariot

From Cardiac to Cathartic!

Narita's late winner over Elmyia sends HUElavia to the Knockouts of World Cup 98 against Saint Eleanor!

Matchday 3 had finally arrived, and after 14 days into the World Cup, HUElavia was very much a cornered Jaguar, backs up to the wall after two 2-1 losses to Kamijiro and Kelssek in the previous two matchdays respectively. At this point, HUElavia knew that anything less than a victory would be an early flight home. With the full A-Team struggling, Coach Casillas did rotations with Girard getting the surprise start over Pavlona, as well as Quihue over Miyamoto, Wahle over Coentrao-Nascimento, and Mantovani over Dias. With a sold out crowd, but with slightly more HUElavians appearing to cheer on the team, the teams came out knowing they needed points to survive and advance.

HUElavia was on the attack from the get-go, really playing up to the standards they were expecting. In particular, the midfield was firing on all cylinders, with Wahle making concise tackles and dispossessions, while Kim and Schmidt would make the precise passes to the HUElavian attack in an attempt to overwhelm the Elmyian defense. The opening goal came in the 17th minute, when a shot by Mantovani took a deflection off Silva, as it went out for a corner kick. HUElavia quickly got in place, where Kim sent a cross into the box, and Milano towered over Beresford to head the ball past a flat-footed Girello into the goal, making it 1-0. The HUElavian crowd erupted in joy and passion to make the stadium rumble, while Milano was hugged and patted by his teammates as he did The Cross in gratitude for the goal. Elmyia would try to attack with the likes of Blair and Benedetti trying to get attacks, but the HUElavian backline would stand strong and Ancel would barely have to do much in front of goal. Despite the back-and-forth affair with Elmyia being more desperate, the half would stay that way, as HUElavia had the control they wanted for once right at half time.

The second half was just about the same, with an ebb-and-flow pace to the match, as both teams were taking shots looking to change the scoreline in their favor. Elmyia would get a very dangerous chance in the 62nd minute, when a pass by Simmons would reach Blair, who would be unopposed by the defense, going one-on-one against Ancel, before giving a shot only to be blocked by the right hand of Ancel and go out for a corner kick. Despite HUElavia holding out strong, Elmyia's persistence would eventually pay off. In the 84th minute, a pass once more from Simmons would eventually get to Benedetti, who was being covered by Alvarez, before giving a side-step and gave a curving shot past the reach of Ancel to hit the woodwork and go in for the goal, making it 1-1. Benedetti ran and kneeled to the corner flag before getting mobbed by their teammates and the bench while the Elmyians were jumping and celebrating in delirium. Coach Casillas would bark orders once more with Alvarez motivating the players once more. HUElavia would push and push, now with fresh legs in Cocha Quichca, Asano and Narita (in for Lobo, Kim and Uchee respectively). Eventually, in the 90+3rd minute, a counter attack would come starting with Alvarez sending a pass to Wahle, who began to run, then passing it to the side to Milano, who began sprinting on the right, being chased by Graves (in for Savalas) before going into the box and trying to take a shot that got covered by Savalas to go out, only for Narita to give a one-time blistering shot past the reach of Girelio into the goal, making it 2-1. The HUElavian crowd was surprised by the surprising goal, jumping up in joy and exuberance, as they made the stadium rumble while Narita was mobbed by her teammates and the bench for the goal. Minutes after, the match ended and the bench came out to hug Narita as HUElavia managed to survive for a few more days pending other results.

In the other Group F game, Kamijiro and Kelssek played out to a safe 0-0 result that had both advance as 1st and 2nd in the group while HUElavia finished in 3rd, while Elmyia was sent home in 4th. By 1700h on Day 16 of the tournament, HUElavia had their watch party and celebrated as the results came in and HUElavia was guaranteed a spot into the Round-of-32 after many teams were falling via goal difference or with less points. Being put as the No. 29 ranked team of the 32 that advanced, HUElavia was set up against Saint Eleanor in the Round-of-32 in the Penultimate game of the round, with the winner advancing to take on the winner of Eastfield Lodge vs Tanirinthia in the Round-of-16. Coach Casillas was quoted saying "We're grateful for having advance to the knockouts after what had been some rough performances. We played like we were expected to and we proved we wanted to stay longer. Kudoss to Elmyia for giving us a tough fight but we survived and advanced. Now, we take on Saint Eleanor, a strong and respectable opponent with similar skils to us. We have plenty to train and study about our next opponent and we hope to give another memorable match for the country. On top of that, we hope to have strong support from the thousands of HUElavians coming over to cheer us on. Without their support, I don't think we'd be in this position right now. For now, we take it 90 minutes at a time, nothing is guaranteed for everyone and we're among the 32 best in the Multiverse. We want to prove our worth and make noise, no matter the opponent." Much is on the line, especially with a spot to the next round on the line. This truly is an elimination game for Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos, but then again, after that loss to Kamijiro, it really is that way. With the Saint Eleanor coach touting that they'll advance to the next round and this has gotten much ire from the HUElavian press and fans alike in articles and social media, but the team prepares calmly, having that quote in the locker room, reminding the team of what to do. Here's to hoping what can be another historic and classical match for our beloved team.

Tikariot 98: A Documentary - Episode 4

Match 3: Tikariot 2-2 Eastfield Lodge
Creighton Park hummed with anticipation as Tikariot took the field for their final group stage match against Eastfield Lodge. The stakes were high—Tikariot needed a result to ensure their passage into the knockout rounds, while their opponents were equally desperate to make a statement under new management. As the opening whistle blew, few could have predicted the dramatic rollercoaster that was about to unfold.

A Shaky Start
From the outset, Eastfield Lodge's high-energy pressing disrupted Tikariot’s rhythm. Their midfield duo of Harun Farrow and Emmie Toure cut off supply lines, forcing errant passes from Tikariot’s usually composed midfield. Within 15 minutes, Tikariot found themselves in deep trouble.

A defensive miscommunication between MacGofraidh and Steingrímsson allowed Eastfield Lodge's Lalo Allred to sneak into the box unmarked. A quick turn and a powerful shot left Vincent Litman with no chance. 1-0. Creighton Park, glowing in the colors of both teams, momentarily fell into an eerie hush.

Tikariot struggled to respond. Their usually fluid attacking play was stifled by Eastfield Lodge’s disciplined defensive shape. Then, disaster struck in the 32nd minute. Sérigne Ayanbadejo, a crucial creative outlet, went down clutching her ankle after a heavy challenge from Diana Kirkup. The stadium held its breath as medical staff rushed onto the field. Unable to continue, Ayanbadejo was substituted for Tobias Grandelius, forcing Tikariot into an early tactical reshuffle.

Before they could recalibrate, Eastfield Lodge doubled their lead. A blistering counterattack saw Paisley Lysander thread a perfect through-ball to Fidelina Noble, who coolly chipped the advancing Litman. 2-0. The Tikariotian bench looked stunned.

The Fightback Begins
Trailing by two at halftime, Tikariot needed something special. Coach Brian McAllister made two key changes: Morris Nighthorse replaced Adrian Grimaud to inject more directness in attack, while Magdalena Strandberg came on for the struggling Markus Sivertstrand. The shift was immediate.

Strandberg’s energy revitalized the right flank, while Nighthorse’s intelligent movement started stretching the Eastfield Lodge defence. The breakthrough finally came in the 68th minute. A looping cross from Wintersham was met by a bullet header from Mathias Vercauteren. 2-1. Hope flickered back into the stands.

With Eastfield Lodge beginning to tire, Tikariot surged forward relentlessly. The equalizer seemed inevitable. In the 84th minute, Grandelius—perhaps playing with extra motivation in front of Annika Nurmsalu—curled a stunning free-kick into the box. In the scramble, Nighthorse pounced, firing the ball into the roof of the net. 2-2. Creighton Park erupted.

Tikariot pushed for a winner, but Eastfield Lodge held firm. As the final whistle blew, Tikariot secured the crucial point they needed, booking their place in the knockout stages.

Post-Match Press Conference
Journalist: "Coach McAllister, you were two goals down. What changed in the second half?"

Brian McAllister: "It was about mentality. We started sluggish, maybe a bit too cautious. The second half was about energy, pressing, and taking risks. Morris and Magdalena made a huge impact. That’s the kind of response we want."

Journalist: "Can you give us an update on Sérigne Ayanbadejo?"

McAllister: "She twisted her ankle quite badly. Initial scans suggest he could miss the next match, but we’ll have a clearer picture in the next 24 hours. It’s a big loss if she’s out, but we have a great squad to compensate."

Morris Nighthorse: "Look, I just did my job. This team never gives up, and we showed that tonight. We're in the knockouts now, and we’ll be ready."

Team Bonding: Kytlerian Wonderland Adventure
With their knockout place secured, the team traveled to Carroll Lewiston in The Kytler Peninsulae, home to the famous Kytlerian Wonderland. A day at the park was the perfect way to unwind before their upcoming clash against Eshialand.

The Roller Coaster Divide
Upon arrival, the team found itself split into two camps—the thrill-seekers and the cautious observers. Adrian Grimaud, ever the daredevil, was first in line for Margaret’s Revenge, the park’s signature gigacoaster. The 109.3m drop and its terrifying 98.4-degree descent made even the most confident riders second-guess themselves.

“I live for this,” Grimaud grinned as the restraints clicked into place, while MacGofraidh, white-knuckled, muttered, “I don’t know why I agreed to this.” As they crested the peak, the screams echoed across the park. After the ride, MacGofraidh stumbled off, breathless. “Never again.”

On the other hand, Connlaodh MacGofraidh and Anders Skogensberg opted for the Rotating Rodent, assuming it would be tame. They were wrong. The seemingly innocent ride’s constant spinning left them dizzy beyond belief. “I think I’m going to need a sub for the next match,” MacGofraidh joked, stumbling to a bench.

The Dark Rides and Haunted House Challenge
Some players decided to explore the immersive dark rides that Kytlerian Wonderland is famous for. Van Der Heyden and Karlsbakk took on The Phantom’s Lament, an eerie ride that combined holograms and animatronics to create a haunting experience. “I’m not saying I screamed, but I definitely wasn’t expecting that ghost to pop out,” Karlsbakk admitted afterward.

Meanwhile, a small group, led by Thorgrima Vigdis, took on The Haunted Manor, a walk-through attraction featuring live actors. Elia Molyneux, still rattled from an earlier roller-coaster experience, was reluctantly dragged in. By the time they exited, she was clinging onto Nurmsalu’s arm. “I wasn’t scared,” she insisted. “I was just making sure no one got lost.”

Annika and Tobias: More Than Teammates?
While most players were busy competing on the go-kart track or trying out various rides, Annika Nurmsalu and Tobias Grandelius were frequently spotted together, strolling through the fairy-tale section of the park. What started as quiet whispers among teammates quickly turned into open teasing when Markus Sivertstrand caught them sharing cotton candy. “Are we calling this a tactical partnership?” he quipped, earning an eye-roll from Nurmsalu and a blushing Grandelius.

Fear vs. Fun: Strandberg’s Battle with Heights
One of the biggest moments of the day came when Magdalena Strandberg, despite her hesitation, was persuaded onto Flip Flip Hooray!, a ride that included multiple inversions. “I regret this already,” she muttered as the lap bars came down. By the end, her loud laughter suggested she had actually enjoyed himself, though she wouldn’t admit it. “One and done,” she insisted, but the rest of the team wasn’t buying it.

Closing the Day with Amusement Park Feats
Before leaving, the team took part in carnival games, with Nighthorse winning an absurdly large stuffed owl, which he later gifted to the traveling fan section. Thorgrima Vigdis, showing off her precision, cleared a shooting gallery, while Vercauteren won a basketball contest. The day ended with everyone gathering for a team photo in front of Princess Amelia’s Castle, laughter and fun on full display.

Hexadecifinal Preview: The Battle of the Owls
Tikariot’s next challenge comes in the form of Eshialand, nicknamed "The Owls." The matchup has already been dubbed the "Owl Derby" by fans, given Tikariot’s Snowy Owls and Eshialand’s Owls nicknames.

Tactically, Eshialand plays a structured, possession-heavy game with fluid movement in attack. Their discipline will test Tikariot’s pressing game, making transitions a key factor. Without Ayanbadejo, McAllister may need to rethink his attacking setup.

"We know what’s at stake," said Vercauteren. "This is knockout football now. Survive and advance—that’s all that matters now."

With the stakes higher than ever, Tikariot is ready to fight for owl supremacy—and a place in the next round.

World Cup Proper Matchday 3: Siovanija and Teusland 3-3 Chromatika @ Carva Dock Arena, Kytler Bay City, The Kytler Peninsulae (Cap. 53,116)
Goals: Prenn 11', Howard-Dawes 61', Fillar, B. 84'
Starting Lineup: Fillar, J. (C); Coulibaly - Jackson-Jones - Nodis; Fillar, G. - Larriet-Cortes - Fillar, B. - Fillar, E.; Prenn; Xuen-Zhukov - Howard-Dawes.
Substitutes: Harry -> Jackson-Jones (66'), Haitou -> Fillar, G. (66'), Jean-Baptiste -> Xuen-Zhukov (72'), Þyrill -> Prenn (72'), Mátyás -> Fillar, E. (80')
Summary: Three matches, three draws, three two-goal comebacks. Hard-pressed to find any advantage after the first fifteen minutes of play, a moment of individual brilliance from Elaine Howard-Dawes in the sixty-first and a brilliant free kick from Baillaire Fillar in the eighty-fourth did the trick as the Anomalies made it to the Second Round of the World Cup Proper for the first time in three editions, prevailing due to another draw to close out the World Cup Proper Group Stage. Though the Anomalies' streak of World Cup Proper games without a win grows to eight, they will happily take the ticket to the Second Round, knowing that they can play with anyone. Nine goals conceded equals the same margin given up in the last World Cup, but the Anomalies' ability to score nine was what saw them through to the promised land, the goal that was set by the team heading into this tournament. Maddie Prenn continued to play exceptional football, providing the coaching staff with a headache heading into the next tournament; Lavrentiy Xuen-Zhukov played the role of decoy very well in this game, freeing up many a chance for the other players on the team. They've been tested, they've been battered, but they've made it through - and when you get through, it's anyone's game at that point.

Roster Selection for World Cup Proper Round of Thirty-Two
Starting XI: Fillar, J. (C); Coulibaly - Jackson-Jones - Nodis; Fillar, G. - Larriet-Cortes - Fillar, B. - Fillar, E.; Prenn; Xuen-Zhukov - Howard-Dawes.
Reserves: GK Hailee Sourtois, GK Jill Swanson, DCR Paisley Paterson, DC Rowan Harry, DCL Uemura Saburo, DC Claudia Lethbridge-Antonio, WBR Ibayashi Haitou, WBL Nemes Mátyás, DLP Alija Mesic-Mizayaki, CDM Jayla Lethbridge-Antonio, AP Evin Françine-Miklavivec, AM Þyrill Bjarnhéðinsson, AF Marietta Fucheux, AF Adélaïde Bittencourt, AF Kaytlyn Jean-Baptiste.
Preview: The Anomalies get to stay in The Kytler Peninsulae - but will have the unenvious task of taking on Crpostran, a rising world power that placed atop the entire World Cup Proper with a 3-0-0 record and a +4 Goal Differential, having defeated Huayramarca, Farfadillis, and Katzeburg. It may be true that both teams haven't lost a match in the World Cup Proper - but there is no denying the killer instinct that the Crpostranians have displayed in their matches. The Anomalies will have the services of Evin Françine-Miklavivec back, as she's recovered from her high ankle sprain - she's expected to play in the second half, Prenn having earned the spot in the starting lineup after three inspiring performances. How they will sort out this situation in future World Cups will be something to see, indeed. The Anomalies will definitely be underdogs in Alaer, but with the way that the team has clawed back from two-goal deficits in all three games, they will not go out without a fight. Hopefully, they'll win their first World Cup Proper game in nine matches, having won their last game in World Cup 96 Proper Matchday 1 against Quebec and Shingoryeo.

The Holdouts, Part 2

Michel Drake and Joseph Drevin could hardly believe their eyes and they stepped into what used to be an abandoned mine shaft not that long ago. Instead, what awaited them was a state-of-the art, modern bunker - a long corridor that led them well below the surface, splitting into a Y-shaped intersection that made it clear that there was plenty of room for people to be holed up in this forgotten section of the Mt. Níar foothills.

"Continue moving to the left," came the mysterious female voice from above, sounding through an intercom system, "If you stop, I will vent all the air from your location and you will become just a forgotten footnote in history."

"No sudden movements," Drake responded, "You said we can have a conversation, and I plan on having that."

The two Chromia Police Department officers did as they were told. About a hundred yards into the left path, the well-lit corridor ended in front of another circular door, closed.

"Okay, we're here," Drevin said, "What now?"

"I'm coming out," the voice explained, "Just understand that I have a dead man's switch on me - if I stop breathing, or I leave the premises, there are enough explosives in this bunker that the entirety of the Mountain District will go up in flames. Like you said, we're going to have a nice, cordial conversation, all right?"

"We get the point," Drake responded, "Don't worry."

The door in front of them swung inward, and out stepped a white-haired middle-aged woman, likely in her fifties. She was tall - at least six feet - had shoulder-length hair, and the unmistakable glint of someone who had nothing to lose, her steely blue eyes bearing into their very souls. She intimidated Drevin, and it took all of his training to not show it. Michel, on the other hand, could tell from the jump that she wasn't going to be an easy opponent to talk to.

"I was wondering when the CPD would be paying me a visit," the woman started, "It was bound to happen sooner rather than later. I'm glad they sent reasonable people to my location instead of some dumb heroes. You two have a good chance of getting out of here alive - and I have a good chance of finally being able to communicate what I want."

"My name is Sergeant Michel Drake of the Chromia Police Department, and this is my Partner, Officer Joseph Drevin," Drake introduced themselves, "We're just here to investigate the mine shafts in the area to make sure there aren't any squatters, and we ran into you. Who might you be, and what can we do for you?" Drake's plan was to appeal to the woman's sense of reason and self-preservation - which was probably the best way that the two of them were going to get out of this, too.

"Isabelle Bellantin," the woman responded, "I used to be the owner of a chain of hotels around here - in Felswyr, Z'ai'ai, and Ming, known as The Grand Opera - back in simpler times. However, we no longer live in such times, and now, I've been here for the better part of two years."

"Ms. Bellantin," Drevin started, "May I ask what caused you to hide here, and why you haven't been out in such a long time?"

"Before I do that," she responded, "I need to know if I can trust you. If they sent you here to take me out, then I'm going to take you two and the rest of the District with me, all right?"

The look and demeanor of her was someone who had resolved herself to such a fate - and that was the scariest part of it all.

"What are you afraid of? How can we prove to you that you can trust us?" Drake was the one to break the silence, "We were here to just recon and report back. We aren't here to take anyone in."

"Who is it that the Chromatik Security Council and the Chromatik government is trying to track down for the last year or so?" Bellantin asked back.

"Those who willingly compromised the Chromatik government by submitting themselves under the Shadow Hand, of course," answered Drevin.

"And how do you officers know that everyone that the Chromatik government is arresting and eliminating are those who belonged to that rogue movement?" inquired Bellantin.

"What are you saying? Are you saying that there are some who are using the political chaos to eliminate others under the guise of eliminating the Shadow Hand?" Drevin stated incredulously.

"I'm not saying such," she said, shaking her head, "I know as much. Let me show you something."

She waved her hand at the ceiling, and a monitor dropped down from above. She wordlessly pressed the play button on a screen, and a video began to play. The two CPD officers stood and watched in stunned silence as they saw a middle-aged man walk down the street. A person in uniform approached him, and the man let his guard down when they said that they were working for the Chromatik government. Then, before the recording device could get a lock on the person's face - or it was blurred for some reason - the person stabbed the man three times before running off.

"That man was my husband," Bellantin explained, emotion in her voice, "And I've been hiding since then. Someone killed my Roland in cold blood while pretending to be part of the investigative force. During my hiding, I've run into many more reports throughout the country of people being eliminated under the ruse of this investigation."

"I'm so sorry, Ma'am," Drevin started, but she waved him off.

"I don't need your sympathies," she responded, "I need to know if I can trust you. So, here's what I'm going to do. One of you can go back - take the video with you - and help me bring my husband's killer to justice. The other I'll keep here as insurance. If you don't come back in a week with an update, I blow both of us up with the rest of the District, all right? A week should be more than ample time to figure this out."

Joseph looked like he was going to retort, but Michel waved him off.

"I accept your terms, and I volunteer to stay with you. I'd like to have a look at the evidence that you've gleaned about these unsanctioned murders, and Joseph here is a far better manhunter than I am," he said.

She nodded grimly. "I have nothing personally against you two - I just need to get justice. You can take all the evidence that I've found in this hard drive."

She handed a USB to Drevin, who looked at his Sergeant as if to get confirmation.

"Go back to HQ. Tell them what you've seen, give them the info, and get them to start cracking down on this. Chromatika can't get off the ground after a political snafu if we don't do it right - we need to find these perpetrators and bring them to justice immediately," Drake told Drevin.

"Got it, Sarge. I'll be back for you," Joseph answered. Isabella nodded as Joseph left them.

"So, can you show me what you have?" Michel asked.

"You know you're being held as a hostage, right?" Isabella said, a bit surprised by his attitude.

"That may be so," he answered, "But it's for a good reason. I really want to help you, and to do that, I need to know what all it is that you've found."

"Have it your way then."

She turned and motioned for him to follow - having learned a truth that he had never considered possible beforehand.

Long-Awaited
Eshialand 2-0 Qusmo

"AND BRADLEY DAVIS KNOCKS IN HIS FIRST GOAL IN THE WORLD CUP FINALS!!!"
"Oh."
"WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SAVE FROM HARRY BRUSKE, SHOWING HIS ABSOLUTE BEST IN GOAL!"
"My."
"AND THAT MARK FROM KEIAR FORSEN WILL MAKE IT A TWO-GOAL MATCH!!! THAT WILL PROBABLY BE ENOUGH..."
"God."

After over three years, it finally happened. Kenny Morgan and Melissa Carey didn't know what to think or say... all of that failure, not thinking they were good enough, wondering if Eshialand would ever see any success at the World Cup... it was all worth it in the end. This team did it, against their hosts no less. Eshialand had finally won a match at the World Cup... 1-3-8.

Not just the last three years in the finals, but eleven cycles of competition had led up to this. This was their new peak, and they were enjoying it. Sure, this moment wasn't going to last forever, but they could make it last forever in their hearts...

This win had huge implications for this team in the competition. After all, a win was going to secure them a trip to the Round of 32 regardless... finally, a shot at the knockouts. It may not be a long one, but just getting here was the battle. Heck, in a funny twist of fate‚ since both matches ended the right way by multiple goals, Eshialand ended up finishing ahead of Valentine Z on goal differential, +1 to their -1. Luckily, that didn't matter much since 4 points in 3rd place is more than enough to make it to the knockouts these days, but it was just another thing to smile about heading into the Round of 32.

Speaking of the Round of 32, there was good news about that as well, as the Owls were already guaranteed to win, in a sense. Yes, the Owls of Eshialand would be playing their first World Cup knockout match against the Snowy Owls of Tikariot, because there was simply no more fitting way to begin their first trip past the group stage than with what fans have dubbed the "Owl Derby". Unlike most World Cups, playing against one of the hosts did not mean their opponents would receime home pitch advantage; instead, both teams would be traveling to Carroll Lewiston in the Kytler Peninsulae to play their match at... a theme park. "No more fitting venue for the most fun we've ever had..." Lucas Meilling had to say about it.

Indeed, with 7 days off between the Qusmo and Tikariot matches, there would be ample time for this team -- and their fans making the journey out here -- to unwind at the park. For many members of the team, most of whom had been on the team less than a year, these would be some of the best memories they had with each other that weren't about football. They had so much time on their hands to just live.

Of course, they still had to prepare for the match in between taking turns on Margaret's Revenge, and they were taking all the time they needed for that. Keeping a close match against the 6th-ranked team in the multiverse was going to be far from easy, but their draws against StrayaRoos and Eatfield Lodge had shown weakness, and that weakness was something they could pounce on. They paid close attention to the Lodger playstyle in their MD3 tilt, how cool and collected defense held firm for the first 45 minutes. Defense was something this team specialized in, but if they could pull it off, magic could be made here in Wonderland... and that was what they set out to do.

"This juror is acceptable to the prosecution, your honor."
"And as for the defense, Mr. Kearney?"
Douglas Kearney sighed before giving his decision. "This juror is acceptable to the defense as well."

And finally, a voir dire that lasted two weeks was finally over. It plodded on at the pace of about one juror every day, but something eventually had to give. First on the government's agenda as they had to watch this shitshow play out in the news headlines? Establish a limit on how many jurors can be struck, obviously. What was originally intended as a measure to ensure neutral jurors had just turned into a living hell of jurors being struck over and over again.

It's not like Douglas Kearney wanted to be a part of this, either. As a federal public defender, he was used to helping out those who didn't have the means to help themselves, and in that he took pride in his job and the good he could do... but this time around, he was assigned to one of the most criminally awful things you can have to do in that position: defending multiple obviously guilty crooks who refused to show up, refused to send their own lawyers who they could obviously afford, and were just completely unlikable on the whole. The two most hated types of people in Eshialand: CEOs and politicians. Nobody else even comes close.

He was just stuck here, a pawn in this system that, to its credit, worked when people counted on it. Everyone got a lawyer duty-bound to defend them, even if said lawyer hated their guts and would rather have anyone else in the country as a client. At least serial killers have mental health problems that you can sympathize with... he thought, these guys are just disgusting. Alas, it was his job to do the absolute best he could to defend them, and in his position that meant two weeks of telling jurors they're "too socialist to understand this case". What a joke.

"Considering that this case hasn't even begun and it's already all over the news media..." the judge began to order. Mr. Kearney knew all of this too well, he knew what was about to be said next, and he knew it was about to turn this case into even more of a dumpster fire than it already was.

"...I am hereby ordering for the jury to be sequestered until such a time as a verdict has been reached and the case has been closed."

And there it was. These 12 jurors who were "lucky" enough to be just right for the case were now going to spend multiple weeks practically jailed in their hotel rooms without any internet or phones, eating nothing but cold pizza that's been double-checked to ensure the Fübar Eats driver didn't spell out anti-Beaujoleil propaganda with the mushrooms. These were going to be the twelve angriest people in the entire country, and Doug was gonna be stuck in a room with them, doing a job he didn't even wanna do, for weeks on end. What a beautiful situation he was in now...

BP to face another host on short notice in WC knockouts
by Mindy Cartwright, National Soccer Editor

The Commonwealth of Baker Park National Team came away from the immediate aftermath of their 1-1 draw against the Busoga Islands--a result that, coupled with Yuezhou's 1-0 win against Vdara, sent both Arrosian sides through from the group stage--with a subsequent chip on their collective shoulders once the arrangements involving the fixtures for the Round of 32 were announced.

The Bees find themselves drawn against co-hosts The Kytler Peninsulae in the opening fixture of the knockout round with a kickoff time just 96 hours following the conclusion of the match in Qanz, a turnaround no other nation is being made to endure.

"We're here to play the match, not make excuses about the who, what, where or when", Manager Will Barnard said in his opening comments ahead of the contest at the Clituleng Giisost Stadium in Alaer.
"Anyone who knows Baker Park knows we have always taken on all comers under any circumstances throughout our history. We're not a side that has an international status that people need to stack the odds against us in order to gain some nefarious advantage. But I have had a couple of days lately where I scratch my head in stupefied amazement trying to decipher exactly how we ended up plopped into a grouping of second placed teams that got us where we're at right now."

Barnard expounded upon an idea that there's a perception within the camp that Park have yet to come close to playing to the potential that the squad are capable of. "We're certainly not looking at this part of the draw with any trepidation about who we might want to avoid; on the contrary, we feel pretty confident on the day we are the equal of anyone left that's here (in The Kytler Peninsulae) if we play up to our ability. Our only opponent now is ourselves and that's what I want my players to believe when we go out on the pitch."

Terrell London and Fatima Khan will join together up front as Barnard seeks a jump start to the attack that lacked the cutting edge against Busoga that it showed in the playoff and first two group fixtures; getting in front of the home nation early will be the focus that a possible squeezing of space between the midfield and forward lines might go a long way towards providing.

Baker Park have not won a World Cup knockout round match since defeating Cassadaigua in the Round of 16 in World Cup 90 at home, and their last knockout win on foreign soil was World Cup 88 when they defeated Newmanistan in Cassadaigua at the same stage.

Notebook:
--Arrosia lead the way with advancers into the knockout round as 7 of the region's nine Finals sides made it through the group stage with only Banija and City of Myrtle Beach falling short; Anaia and Rushmore (6) tied for second but lost a larger percentage of teams to elimination as both regions had 10 nations among the 48 and Esportiva got four of their seven sides through, while independents got 5 of 8 teams and Sonnel and Karma see both of their respective entries remaining alive.
--Sarzonia and Busoga Islands will be the only all-Arrosia matchup in the Round of 32 while BP and Farfadillis square off against Rushmori co-hosts TKP and Yuezhou respectively; two matchups will see Arrosia vs IAC and there will be just one Anaian vs Arrosian contest as HOT-DAMN takes on top ranked Valanora. Two Rushmori vs IAC, Anaia vs Esportiva and Rushmore vs Esportiva fixtures and three Anaia vs IAC battles round out 15 of the 16 scheduled games, with Edsmontik vs Valentine Z the sole all-Indie affair.
--The FAC announced that the BPNT will opt for the classic "Ghost Whites"
Image
for the match in lieu of the modern away strip worn throughout this cycle.
--The fixture will mark the 1,175th all time match in BPNT history and 765th of the modern mixed gender era, of which BP have won 455 against 168 defeats and 141 draws.
--Manager Will Barnard will take charge of his 128th NT match which will be exactly half of the record 256 matches former manager Jennifer Prescott had during her tenure. Barnard passed both Pam Scott and Ichi Tuzzio for second place on both the matches in charge and matches won lists during qualifying, with his record now sitting at 65 wins against 26 losses and 36 draws since the beginning of the World Cup 94 cycle.

Lineup vs The Kytler Peninsulae Round of 32
Cotterill; Andrews, Kucera (C), A. Jones; Martini, Garfield, Morgan, Howard; Riley; Khan, London
subs: Albertson, Frost, O'Connor, McKenzie, Taylor, C.Logan, S.Logan, D'Alessandro, Prince, Kirby, Douglas, Coleman, Hardison, McDavid, Engels

Return of the Stars

As the world cup got under way we as Starsian team were here for the second time ever, we arent necessarily known as a team or very famous but that does not mean that we are a team you can count out yet.
Coach Walcott before the start of the world cup clearly instructed the team they woudn't just be going there, no they were going to make an actual attempt to win the world cup and there would be no questioning that.
All same players that played the qualifiers also traveled along to the region of the world cup, for Kira Blade it was her final travel as an international after already returning after her last farewell but this time she made clear it was final.
Her role in this team had been played she was not necessarily needed but the cheers, the joy and the energy everything gave her still was there and she could certainly say she loved having one more chance at it.
Meanwhile others like Paula Nuñez were here for the very first time, she had already been very shocked by the fact she had been chosen for the national team but now to stand at the world cup as a 22 year old? that was diffrent.
Others like Federico Zaratti as team captain were more in their own thoughts, he had seen his fair share of soccer games and he knew this would be far from easy and with a young team like theirs quite a challenge against bigger more experienced sides, however he had friends around.

Our first game was against Ko-oren a nation we have never played against before, it was an honor to meet such a high ranked team for us yet we really wanted to win despite it all as we all had promised to for that win.
Our line-up for that game wa Davis, Saturn, Zaratti, Nightwalker, Weber, Hansen, Corson, Raharinaivo, Phillips, Nuñez and Frazier a young but promising squad we selected as our main eleven and as the game got underway we discovered we arent as good as we thought.
We played fierce, well and certainly not bad but they were a size too big for us, we did defend with all we could just hoping we would come back with a counter but it was to no avail as they were just that good.
In the second half substitutions of respectively Kira Blade and Joy Sol did little despite bringing more experience into the field where a two to nothing loss was the only thing we got out of this game, it was a hard reality for our team.
After a talk with the coach it was coach Walcott who told the team to keep their heads up high and that their time to shine would come, especially for the younger players this was very motivating because they had been shocked by the skill of the Ko-oren team.

Our second game was against the squornshelan remnant states, we didnt play against them before but we knew they were a really good team that we wouldnt beat easily but we were motivated to try.
Our line-up was as follows, Davis, Saturn, Zaratti, Nightwalker, Weber, Caruso, Corson, Raharinaivo, Phillips, Nuñez nad Frazier the only change here being Alessio Caruso starting instead of Lina Hansen because Caruso would have to ensure more control of the midfield where Hansen was a very offensively minded player and Caruso a bit less so.
As the game got underway one after the other goal was scored but not by us, we did not have an answer to their strong attack and by the end of the first half they were leading 4-1 our only goal being scored by Kimora Frazier with a very lucky but also insanely skilled cross that against all odds when over and beyond the goalkeeper into the goal to put atleast a goal on the board for our side.
During halftime Kira Blade and Lina Hansen were brought in and in the second half Nuñez scored twice one time from a corner where the defense didnt get the ball away and the second one after a great pass from Corson through the midfield.
Sadly the Remnant states scored two more times and made it 6-3 but as always when you think its over a final surprise is there and from no one less then Selena Corson herself, the ball was cleared by defenders and fell to her feet, without a second thought she took a shot from outside the box and thanks to a defender in the way the ball changed direction and went in, a lucky but still nice goal for the young midfielder who really looks to step it up for the national team on this world cup.
Match did end in 6-4 and while we didnt win the fans were proud because they had seen the Wolves fight and score, they had gone down worthy and thats what the fans want to see, they want to see their players battle for every result even if its a loss.

Last match of the group was against Baggieland, we have never won against Baggieland before only a draw earlier of 3-3 and a narrow loss so there would be chances but even this game would be tough, not a walkover in any way or form.
There was still a small chance to go through, but a win would be needed and even then they would likely face a very strong top team, but they really wanted to go for the win, they were the Starsian Wolves and they would not give up.
Today the line-up was, Davis, Saturn, Zaratti, Nightwalker, Edwards, Hansen, Sol, Raharinaivo, Phillips, Nuñez and Frazier as Grace Edwards had to keep it defensively tight and Sol had to put in absolute command of the midfield in this decisive game.
As the game got underway it did not take long before in the 11th minute Elizabeth Phillips scored the first goal, it was early, it was a lead and certain unexpected given the ease of how she got past the defense and into a scoring position.
It was tough but the defense held up great with Zaratti and Edwards giving clear and good directions to the defense and the midfield how they wanted it and what they should do in terms of positioning and more.
During halftime Kira Blade was brough on and Selena Corson on the midfield, with both of them on the field the game improved further and it saw Lina Hansen and also Paula Nuñez score goals respectively as it seemed to go the right way.
It was a long, gruelling and exhausting game but when the last signal of the referee was given the entire crowd cheered and the Starsians thanked their fans and knew that whatever the next game would bring they could certainly face it.

It was later heard that Pasarga, that was really tough because Pasarga was a group winner and a bunch a world cup veterans, they had never directly met them but the Starsians already knew this game was gonna be really tough.
It was not impossible but they weren't gonna sugarcoat it either, they needed a great ton of luck and a miracle to get through but they would not go down without a battle, the Starsian Wolves had already beaten the odds more then once.

Whether it was beating Zenic to clinch a playoff spot, or beating Zwangzug in the playoffs itself or now their win against Baggieland to make it somehow out of the group stage, they had challenged to odds time and time again.
Now was no diffrent, they would once again face impossible looking odds but they would stand and give it their all whether it becomes a great win or a worthy loss, the Starsian side has never gotten out of the group stage before so currently everything was history in the making, also what was more.....Kira Blade would likely make her last and 100th appearance in the Starsian national team, no one ever has appeared in so many games and there would likely be joy only for that reason already.
