Odd Military practices in YN

Postby Socalist Republic Of Mercenaries » Mon Mar 18, 2024 7:47 am

What are some odd military practices in YN?

Here's mine!
Badge-collecting
Stratusian soldiers have a infatuation with collecting enemy insignias, division patches, and beret flashes. Some soldiers have dozens of different beret flashes, picked up from fallen enemies, which are euphemistically referred to by soldiers as "Decks" as in decks of cards. A "Royal flush", as the collection was nicknamed during Operation Panzerfaust, the counteroffensive to the U.S. led Operation Desert Storm would be a full collection of both all the beret flashes and sleeve insignias of the 82nd Airborne Division, 101st Airborne Division, both the 1st and 3rd Armored Division sleeve insignias, and 3rd Cavalry Regiment insignia, and a "Full house" would also include a 1st Special Forces Command sleeve insignia, 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta insignia, and a United States Army Rangers sleeve marker to top it off. Usually soldiers will trade their patches collected out-of-combat in an attempt to "Collect them all", in some cases, offering hundereds in NSD to fellow comrades to get their hands on coveted patches. Completed collections of genuine patches can be auctioned off for thousands in Stratusian antique stores.

Fin-flash colecting
Same as above, but now with collecting fin flashes. Every Stratusian aviator usually has two or three fin flashes from F-15s and F-16s shot down from previous missions stored somewhere in their house, be it in a display case or framed on the wall. Fin flashes, unlike badges and patches are often sold individually, with ones pre-dating 1991 usually fetching upwards of 10,000 NSD, often listed as cold-war memorabilia.
"Do you even know who my husband is!!??!!"
"Nein, ich weiß nicht. I am with the Stratusian Interior Security Ministry, you are coming with me."

Notable soldiers, heroes and generals will have commemorative coins minted of them which become a currency of sorts or to be collected. As of current, there are 25 and having a full set in a perfectly kept collection book is considered a mark of honour.

To emphasise equality among soldiers, privates, NCOs and officers all eat in the same mess. This is considered entirely normal by now, and is intended to show each group that their colleagues are, in fact, people too.

Random Live-Streaming During Combat
[hr]
Well you might think this is a weird thing to do , but in our nation , it is perfectly normal. This was a normal military tradition starting May 14 , 5046 , as many liked the idea of live-streaming their top secret military operations onto popular streaming websites. Today , over 100 different live-streams have occured during the Iraqi-Terran War which occured from March 21, 4003 , to May 15, 4003. Many of these live-streams depicting major gunfights in the streets. And so far , over a 100 Million people have tuned in to watch these Live-Streams.

Collecting the Enemies Helmet / Hat / Cap

This odd tradition was started when Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Westingham collected Soviet Military Helmets during the Russo-Terran War of 3045.
He collected many Helmets from fallen Soviet Soldiers. These helmets were used to create a exhibit in the Museum of Terranica , a collection of every important item from the Terran Capitalistic Nations , and also important items from the other Terranican Nations ( Eastern Terranica , British Terranica. )

In modern Tangatarehua, the oddest thing is the fact that there no longer is an official military.

However before 1979, the Imperial Tangatarehua Army had a tradition in which they would always declare war with a human sacrifice to Tumatatuega, the God of War - a tradition dating back thousands of years.

Usually this sacrifice would be a high ranking officer doing so willingly for honour, though in 1973 the army sacrificed a taurekareka (slave) and in the 1950s sacrificed a young private of kaiahu (commoner) blood, rather than a noble officer.

Tangatarehua went on to lose both of these wars and to this day there are pockets of the elderly generation who believe that Tangatarehua lost the war not because of any strategic or tactical error, but because Tumatatuenga was displeased with the sacrifice he was given at the beginning.

Those serving under any of the Realm's military organization are free (in most circumstances) to take enemy small arms (essentially anything that can be mailed via the military mail system) as trophies, and personally import them back to the Realm. Colloquially referred as 'bringbacks', these firearms flooded the firearms market of the Realm in the 1990's with the mass influx of captured Soviet ordnance, most notably AK-74 rifles of various models, that can be found on sale by the crateful for a bargain around the Realm.

Ordnance, vehicles and larger weapon systems alongside other large equipment is initially retained by the respective organization that captured it, and if not explicitly kept by said organization for purposes such as research, OPFOR training or the like, is publicly auctioned. Anything goes. These auctions are massively popular events, with wealthy collectors, militias, corporations and citizens in general bidding. Anything goes, with things such as tents, radar systems, field hospitals, trucks, main battle tanks, jet fighters, helicopters, and corvettes being auctioned off to the highest bidder.

First Bullets
An odd practice for those in the Rhodeve army is to collect the first bullet in their magazine from the first time they use a new weapon or before each new engagement. Often, soldiers will write the year and reason for the collection, such as "2021, first AK-47" or "2007 Battle of Port Joy". It has become a competition of sorts to become the soldier to collect the most first bullets, to the point that the military magazine will often include an annual top 10 list of the most in Rhodeve history.

The Child Salute
A practice that comes from a happenstance. In the 1914, Queen Maya Angellos while riding in a motorcade during a military procession at the start of the first world war was saluted to by a child. Instead of waving or returning the salute, she stopped her vehicle, walked up in front of the child, knelt onto one knee and saluted him at near-eye level. Now, it has become common practice that during traditional marches, when a child salutes, the commanding officer will turn to them and salute them at eye level.

Field Sacrifices

If an enemy position is overrun and there are captured combatants, all of them will die. Usually, this takes the form of slit throats or bullets to the head. However, if they want to really leave a message they will crucify enemies or set up stakes near enemy encampments, tying enemies to them and lighting them on fire, letting their lamentations fill the air. When the enemy comes to retrieve the corpses of their friends they will find all sorts of hand-written passages, condemnations and curses laid upon them.

Appropriation

A rather *plain* and unassuming name for the old practice of looting, pillaging and enslaving the heathen. The Children of Mercy will often abscond with "sufficiently subdued" women and children to work fields and be indoctrinated in the Order's particular perversion of Christianity. Enemy towns that come under control will be depopulated and stripped of everything useful. With enough time, this will include plumbing, copper wire and the constituent parts of structures.

Between 1998 and 2016, The Royal Jugoslav Army spent significant money developing a mobile fire control center called the "parad-maršal" (Parade Marshal) specifically designed to conduct a specifically time-calculated discharge of weapons that pairs well with a selection of "morale-building" musical pieces, which it then proceeds to broadcast loudly over a radio channel to all friendly forces, as well as over loudspeaker. It's intended use is to "Maximize both suppression barrages and infantry morale during heavy trench-warfare combat," a type of combat which the Armed forces have not seen heavy use of in over any of the 3 most recent wars prior to its development

It has been deployed precisely once in combat operations, to a small point-defense operation in Calimantania...

Complex analysis shows it was not very effective, in real terms, at providing artillery support, but non-artillery units stationed near the unit in the battle reported extremely high satisfaction with its performance for a piece of military equipment.

When the Kastovian Ground Defence Command successfully captures an enemy General or Commander, what they do with them depends on how they performed in battle. Those who have shown great bravery and determination in the field of combat are given the option to commit suicide. If they do so, their body will be repatriated to Greater Kastovia, where they will be buried with full military honours. The suicide of a brave soldier is seen as an act of great heroism and sacrifice in Greater Kastovia, and many soldiers will usually execute themselves with a bullet to the back of the head to avoid capture.

If the UN or NATO orders us to invade or liberate a country (your perception may vary), we never want to choose the most obviously point of entry, whenever possible, because the opposing force would just make our job harder.

Also, hazing is a criminal offence. It's simple logic: work together and treat each other with dignity, as every shred of morale matters.

In certain circumstances after confirmation of death, a soldier’s body armor will be extracted by a reconnaissance team. This is so we can salvage it (saving on costs), but also to prevent the enemy from gathering Orcuan military tech.

Soldiers are created in specific vats separate from the rest of the nation's citizens so that they are created with the full knowledge of warfare right from birth. That way, the military can reduce time needed to learn a specific task and send the soldiers out to war at an earlier time than most others.

HEAD HUNTING
Usually, whenever wars last longer then two weeks, high-value targets ranging from generals to suppliers to political leaders and more begin to have a price on their head. This has been proven to give soldiers the push to hunt them and kill them, not only weakening the enemies ability to fight but also receiving a reward. The reward will be collected after proof of the kill is given, most commonly the head of the target. The rewards range from $40,000-$100,000 with the highest price being $1 million for the general of the enemy military.

INSIGNIA CARVING
Another common practice is that, whenever at war with an enemy, soldiers will engrave the insignia of the enemy onto their rifle or helmet. Whenever asked why, some say to never forget what they fought through, while others say because they've seen others doing it. And yet others also say because they love decorating their rifles. Veterans can have rifles with 15 or more insignia's engraved on their rifles or helmets. Each insignia also increases the price of the rifle and helmet, so they are generally later sold near the end of the soldiers life.

CARDS
The final common practice in the military is that each soldier will have a card that is significant to their squadron and them. For example, a soldier in squadron A will have an Ace of Spades, while another soldier in the same squadron will have a 6 of hearts. While no one really knows how this started or why, it has been in the military for as long as anyone can remember.

Namesake Flags

Where applicable, Boldonian naval forces and coast guard ships named after a location or city will fly the flag of wherever they were named after underneath the Boldonian flag. For example, underneath the Boldonian flag on the mast of IRBS Miami the city flag of Miami is flown, on IRBS Hawaii the state flag of Hawaii is flown, on IRBS Mariana the flag of the Northern Mariana Islands is flown, and so on and so forth. If a Boldonian warship finds itself in its namesake port, then the namesake flag will be risen above the Boldonian flag. For example, if IRBS San Diego is in the San Diego Bay (such as when operating from Naval Base San Diego) then the San Diego flag will be risen above the Boldonian flag.

This practice isn't necessarily coded into Boldonian naval operations, and in fact nobody is 100% sure where the practice came from, but it has grown to be a tradition. One theory started with the Cyclone-Class Patrol Boat IRBS Miami during the First Boldonian-Brasilistani War. Rumor circulated that in operations along the West Peninsula IRBS Miami used the Miami city flag as a pseudo calling card, displaying it prominently as it ran circles around slower Brasilistani warships. Another theory states during the same war USS Makin Island which was operating as part of the American support of Boldonia's operation had met up with IRBS Marshall to sail together briefly. A Boldonian pilot intending to land on IRBS Marshall had been confused on which ship was which, due to both ships overlapping each other on radar. To distinguish themselves a crew member on IRBS Marshall began to wave the flag of the Marshall Islands. The first theory is what is most believed due to it being backed up by primary sources (the crew of IRBS Miami) whereas the second theory hasn't been directly confirmed. Whichever one was true, other Boldonian ships took note and soon began flying namesake flags of their own for morale purposes, and the practice stuck.

Some other navies have also used a namesake flag when encountering Boldonian naval ships, such as when during a joint Boldonian-Australian training operation HMAS Canberra flew the flag of the Australian Capital Territory. However outside of that the practice of namesake flags remains insular to Boldonia, and no other known navy practices it to such a scale that Boldonia does.
The American Flag

The US flag still holds significance in the IRBMF and is often used in both parades and as a rallying symbol. Although proper military parades are rare, when they do happen (usually on foreign soil) Boldonian units will lead with three different flags, the flag of their branch, the Boldonian flag, and the US flag. The US flag is also unofficially used in many aspects such as raising it over a captured position or using it to rally morale.
Invasion Soundtrack

Once a radio station is captured or seized during a Boldonian operation, it will often be turned into a proper music station for morale purposes. Rock from the 60s to the 90s is what is most commonly played due to its nostalgic status and their popularity among the troops. Instead of advertisement breaks the spaces in between different tracks is instead used as a sort of news and/or propaganda segment where pro-democratic news will often be played for anyone listening, including enemy troops or civilians in hostile territory.
Manning the Rail at Pearl Harbor

While the practice of manning the rails when passing by the USS Arizona Memorial is normally something exclusively practiced by the US Navy, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine, even after Boldonian independence sailors of the Independent Republic of Boldonia Naval Forces and Independent Republic of Boldonia Coast Guard still observe the practice when they enter Pearl Harbor. Unless it isn't already clear almost all Boldonians are still American at heart, and manning the rails in respect of USS Arizona is just one of the many ways that has been made clear.

Bucket O' Bullets

This tradition involves the commander of a unit having a bucket of bullets(bullet casings) being dumped on their head after completing a major movement or winning a battle. It started within the 107th Infantry Regiment after the victory at the Battle of January River. After winning, the regiment commander had an ammo box full of empty casings dumped on his head by the paymaster. At the time, hazing of junior officers was a problem, and in order to stop it the 107th adopted this practice to retain more officers. Today, the tradition survives, used on junior officers after field training exercises and more senior officers after winning a major battle.

Snake Blood(and Vodka)

Within the Mountain Division, candidates are expected to kill and eat many animals. One such animal is the snake, in which a nonvenomous snake is killed and the entire squad has to drink its blood. After completing training, Mountain Division members repeat this practice, this time a bottle of vodka is poured over the squad as they drink snake blood. It is unknown why this tradition started and even more why it is still around, but the main reason is that it "promotes comradery and morale".

Postby Socialist Gestachia » Tue Apr 09, 2024 11:28 pm

The Gestachian military has a number of oddities.
  1. Uniforms.
Combat uniforms are not casual wear, they are only relegated for combat or on patrol, rather the service dress serves as both as casual wear and formal wear. The service dress for all branches have either an extrmely thick greatcoat with no openings (similar to a sweater) or a more tradional greatcoat, suit, a tie with a clasp, dress shirt, and a peaked cap or a ushanka or a side cap (depending on rank and weather).

If it is not winter the suit, tie with clasp, dress shirt, and peaked cap/side cap must be worn in formal situations with the greatcoat optional. If it is winter either the extrmely thick greatcoat with no openings or the more tradional greatcoat, suit, a tie with a clasp, dress shirt, and a ushanka worn in formal situations. As the Gestachian military does not have a full dress uniform this dresscode de facto serves as one.

In most non-winter casual situations just wearing a dress shirt and tie with clasp is enough, however there are some casual situations where wearing a suit, dress shirt, tie with clasp, and peaked cap/side cap is required.

Female uniforms are exactly the same as their male counterparts, they are just tailored differently for optimum fit.

  2. Socialist Gestachia has a warflag, it is flown on all military buildings in times of war in place of the national flag.

  3. The name.
There is no "true" name to the Gestachian military, it is often called the Gestachian Revolutionary Forces (and is the "most" offical), however it is also often called the Gestachian Revolutionary/Armed Forces, the Gestachian Armed Forces, the Gestachian Revolutionary Armed Forces, or simply the Gestachian military.

  4. The number of military branches and their organization.
The Gestachian military has 15 military branches under 2 ministries, the Ministry of Defense and War and the Ministry of State, Internal, and Interior Security. Even though the Ministry of Defense and War is a ministry of Socialist Gestachia the government has very little power over it, rather it is mainly controlled by Red Workers' Party of Gestachia. However the Gestachian government does have tighter control of MSIIS. This serves a check and balance between the government and the RWPG to ensure that both are committed socialism—through force if needed.

The reason why the Gestachian military has so many branches is simply due to a refusal to classify some as paramilitary forces.

The Gestachian military refuses to create a space force until interplanetary warfare becomes possible—however does have a plan for its creation if it ever becomes viable.

  5. Conscription is enforced for both males and females, however there are ways to reduce or even eliminate required time.

  6. The Gestachian military does not have a ceremonial guard.
They are viewed as a waste of resources, rather regular troops are used at events or no troops are used at all. As a result being on ceremonial duty in Socialist Gestachia is actually viewed as somewhat unprestigious.

  7. Formations do not have a military standard.
Formations in the Gestachian military do not have any standard, the warflag or the flag of the service branch is used instead, and they are not viewed as too important.

Due to the Gestachian military being apathic to formation military standards there is a extremely rarely practiced tradition of burning captured military standards to provoke the enemy. However, this practice is highly frowned upon in Socialist Gestachia and there have been punishments for such behavior, although not overly harsh.

There has been efforts to introduce military standards for formations similar to a ministral standard however these mostly fell flat, however the movement is slowly growing.

  8. Highly unsual ranks.
Unlike most modern militaries the Gestachian military does not have any commissioned officers—even at the highest ranks, this is under the Gestachian ethos of meritocracy. Rather all officers are non-commissioned and have military and political training as part of promotion process. This also means that unlike most socialist militaries the Gestachian military has no commissars as officers are already politically motivated. Additionally to their NCO nature officers often have a tight and powerful relationship with their troops.

  9. Fighting spirit.
Surrender is viewed extemely negitively and most of time when faced with no other options Gestachian troops will try a suicidal breakout, fight to the death, or break up to fight with guerrilla tactics.

Due to officers having a tight relationship with their troops they will often fight along side them—sometimes at at the front line, even at the highest ranks. There is a famous quote by a Gestachian general, "Why would I give out orders that I wouldn't follow?" He was posthumously promoted to marshal after being KIA, his presence was widely credited for winning that battle.

There are still quite a few but these are the major ones.

I love those! They are quite thought out!

Raider Scalp Counting: Some particularly zealous soldiers in the New Detroit Republic Army have developed a macabre tradition of collecting scalps from defeated raider enemies. These grisly trophies are often adorned with markings or inscriptions detailing the date and location of the encounter, serving as grim reminders of the dangers faced in the wasteland. While officially frowned upon by military leadership, the practice persists among certain units as a symbol of prowess and survival.
Mutant Tooth Necklaces: Amongst the more superstitious members of the NDR Army, there exists a belief in the protective properties of mutant teeth. Soldiers who have survived encounters with mutated creatures often collect the teeth of their fallen foes, stringing them together to create necklaces or bracelets. These grisly talismans are believed to ward off bad luck and bring good fortune in battle, with some soldiers even attributing miraculous escapes to the mystical powers of their mutant tooth jewelry.
Scrapyard Shield Crafting: In the New Detroit Republic, resourcefulness is key to survival. Some soldiers have developed a peculiar skill in crafting makeshift shields from salvaged scrap metal and vehicle parts. These scrapyard shields are often personalized with symbols, slogans, or graffiti, reflecting the individuality and creativity of their creators. While not as durable as traditional military shields, these improvised defenses provide an extra layer of protection during close-quarters combat in the wasteland.
Nuka-Cola Cap Collecting: In a nod to pre-war nostalgia, some soldiers in the NDR Army have developed a fascination with collecting Nuka-Cola bottle caps. These iconic caps, scavenged from the ruins of old pop machines and abandoned stores, are prized as rare and valuable artifacts of a bygone era. Soldiers compete to amass the largest and most diverse collections of Nuka-Cola caps, trading them amongst themselves and displaying them as trophies of their wasteland adventures.
Mutant Skull Trophies: In the aftermath of successful engagements against mutant creatures, some soldiers collect the skulls of their fallen adversaries as trophies of their conquests. These mutant skull trophies are often adorned with makeshift decorations, such as painted symbols or tribal markings, before being displayed prominently in barracks or mess halls. While controversial among military leadership for its grisly nature, the practice of collecting mutant skulls serves as a testament to the soldiers' bravery and skill in facing the dangers of the wasteland.
Ruin-Crawling Rites of Passage: As part of their training and initiation into certain elite units, soldiers undergo "ruin-crawling" expeditions into the heart of the Motor City's most dangerous and dilapidated structures. Armed only with basic equipment and their wits, recruits must navigate labyrinthine ruins infested with mutants, raiders, and other hazards. Successfully completing a ruin-crawling mission is seen as a rite of passage, demonstrating a soldier's resourcefulness, courage, and adaptability in the face of adversity.

Motor City Wasteland Ballads: In downtime between missions, soldiers gather around campfires to share and perform original songs known as "Motor City Wasteland Ballads." These folk-inspired tunes recount tales of heroism, tragedy, and survival in the harsh wasteland environment, often drawing inspiration from real-life experiences and legendary figures. Through music, soldiers find solace, camaraderie, and a sense of connection to their shared history and heritage.

Rust-Crafting Competitions: To foster creativity and innovation among its ranks, the NDR Army hosts periodic "rust-crafting" competitions, where soldiers compete to create functional equipment and weapons using salvaged materials and scrap metal. Participants showcase their ingenuity by fashioning everything from improvised firearms to makeshift tools and gadgets. These competitions not only encourage resourcefulness but also serve as a form of friendly rivalry and team-building within military units.

Post-Battle Feast Rituals: Following successful military operations, soldiers partake in elaborate feasts and celebrations to commemorate their victories and honor fallen comrades. Known as "post-battle feast rituals," these gatherings feature hearty meals cooked from foraged ingredients, salvaged canned goods, and hunted game. Soldiers share stories, toast to their achievements, and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, forging bonds of camaraderie and solidarity amidst the harsh realities of the wasteland.

As normal continental practice most units use a french style beret with the badge over the right eye. But there are exceptions with units that have lineage to WW2 free Catalan forces that were formed and equipped in the UK.
As the 11a Brigada Paracaigudista "diables vermells" uses a Maroon beret (paratroopers) 21é Regiment SAE heir of WW2(6th SAS (Catalan) and 9th Catalan Troop 10th Inter allied commando) and la 3a Brigada de comandos de Infanteria de Marina green berets(with the winged dagger) and dark green beret (with the Marines insignia). Use Commonwealth style berets with their insignia over the left eye.

Alms-Giving
Wochaystein's emphasis on traditional Christian values and principles in their military practices is reflected in the conduct of their soldiers, who are expected to adhere to a strict code of ethics and morality. One of the more peculiar aspects of this code is alms-giving. It is considered commendable behavior to give alms to the poor and helping those in need, even if it means putting themselves at risk.

Belief in Divine Protection
Soldiers from Wochaystein tend to wear religious icons on their uniforms, carrying blessed artifacts into combat, and seeking the guidance of chaplains before engaging the enemy.
