This tradition involves the commander of a unit having a bucket of bullets(bullet casings) being dumped on their head after completing a major movement or winning a battle. It started within the 107th Infantry Regiment after the victory at the Battle of January River. After winning, the regiment commander had an ammo box full of empty casings dumped on his head by the paymaster. At the time, hazing of junior officers was a problem, and in order to stop it the 107th adopted this practice to retain more officers. Today, the tradition survives, used on junior officers after field training exercises and more senior officers after winning a major battle.
I love those! They are quite thought out!Independent Republic of Boldonia wrote:Namesake Flags
Where applicable, Boldonian naval forces and coast guard ships named after a location or city will fly the flag of wherever they were named after underneath the Boldonian flag. For example, underneath the Boldonian flag on the mast of IRBS Miami the city flag of Miami is flown, on IRBS Hawaii the state flag of Hawaii is flown, on IRBS Mariana the flag of the Northern Mariana Islands is flown, and so on and so forth. If a Boldonian warship finds itself in its namesake port, then the namesake flag will be risen above the Boldonian flag. For example, if IRBS San Diego is in the San Diego Bay (such as when operating from Naval Base San Diego) then the San Diego flag will be risen above the Boldonian flag.
This practice isn't necessarily coded into Boldonian naval operations, and in fact nobody is 100% sure where the practice came from, but it has grown to be a tradition. One theory started with the Cyclone-Class Patrol Boat IRBS Miami during the First Boldonian-Brasilistani War. Rumor circulated that in operations along the West Peninsula IRBS Miami used the Miami city flag as a pseudo calling card, displaying it prominently as it ran circles around slower Brasilistani warships. Another theory states during the same war USS Makin Island which was operating as part of the American support of Boldonia's operation had met up with IRBS Marshall to sail together briefly. A Boldonian pilot intending to land on IRBS Marshall had been confused on which ship was which, due to both ships overlapping each other on radar. To distinguish themselves a crew member on IRBS Marshall began to wave the flag of the Marshall Islands. The first theory is what is most believed due to it being backed up by primary sources (the crew of IRBS Miami) whereas the second theory hasn't been directly confirmed. Whichever one was true, other Boldonian ships took note and soon began flying namesake flags of their own for morale purposes, and the practice stuck.
Some other navies have also used a namesake flag when encountering Boldonian naval ships, such as when during a joint Boldonian-Australian training operation HMAS Canberra flew the flag of the Australian Capital Territory. However outside of that the practice of namesake flags remains insular to Boldonia, and no other known navy practices it to such a scale that Boldonia does.
