Figment I, Part 3 - Intro

The Maison Misiriyaa, to those who had visited the place, was a mystique chronotope of confusion, dreams and feelings that coexist alongside the sportspeople of this northerly nation. Of course, when the sporting Multiverse's biggest sports agency is personally involved in housing of the athletes, so young and diversely-minded, contracted to Montreal Koreana, it is expected for the space to generate a certain atmosphere of fresh spirit no less refreshing.

Mesdames et messieurs...entering the pitch for the first time....Jean-Christophe Babin!

The debut of Jean-Christophe Babin, the first resident of the house, was the one that rang freshly into the minds of Pierre McCarthy, Jean-Christophe and the others residing at the house at the time. Standing in middle of the snow-filled turf, they could remember the very moment when Jean-Christophe, warming himself on the sidelines like how every diligent prospect would, before being given a gentle tap on the shoulder to replace slowly-aging starter in Louis Kuelvic on the 79th minute.

To many, this was just another day where a highly-talented prospect, from the most famous academy side of this country from their winningest side, was going to play for the first time. Being the club with likes of Karl Varsteeg, Zachary Fortin, and Michel Fillion (yuck!) coming out of its academies, this was nothing, but to the initial class of residents this had meant a ton for their bonds had continued well past the initial awkwardness of living together...with their agent who wasn't always around, but at least tried his best. 'Save this picture!' Pierre McCarthy remembered Mario Itsumi, then a 15-year basketball prospect from Nunavut, shouting as Pierre took a picture of him.

''And now the Grim Reapers are serving for the championship....the serve reception goes wide! MacDonald hits the chance ball...And they have done it! GRIM REAPERS HAVE DONE IT! GRIM REAPERS HAVE DONE IT! Coming into the final, Defending champions, HUElavia has been as ready as they were, having played in three out of last four championship finals, but Quebec, outstanding performance in the knockout rounds, have done it!'

Back in that Volleyball World Expo (OOC: a year before the start of season 7, so three years after season 6), everybody was watching Natalie Wesoloski-Okafor's games all tournament long at home. Pierre remembered, before and during every Grim Reapers match, there being plenty of thoughts exchanged between Matteo, Zinaida, Arabella and others over the living room table, about how daunting it must be to be compared as one of the best in the world, and to be scrutinised in every angle after each game.

The unenforced errors...they are the scariest things that only put the limits to the phrase 'sky is the limit'... Pierre recalled a thought that brushed past his head at the time, in a competition that pitted so many of the international stars who were bound to face each other every year. Some more frequent than others due to heading to a top three league in Quebec, Mytanija and Bollonich, but no less easy for rest either. Something that had not really come in the minds of any of them - but then who would? Not everybody had lived in the same world of expectations, and only so few- Kate Huitema-Omeasoo and Erin Kang, and now their OG friend Jean-Christophe- were able to say that they knew the weight of the world....

And sometimes tough choices have to be made...

Of course, this had required a bit of sacrifice on Pierre McCarthy's part as well, as he made his decision to permanently move to Montreal and the Maison Misiriyaa/McCarthy. When he had really left his home country for Ceni, only to return for his business trips, the country was still in middle of its decadelong absence from international football and was undergoing major power struggles from within re: its sporting organisations. Now, the country was gradually on its upswing and those who had spent their twenties and thirties during those troubled times were now the ones watching from the sidelines, whether as coach, administrator or just a parent to their kid(s) playing sports.

Of course, he was not the exception from this either, for he has a daughter who reps Quebec in tennis, a sports it's not really known for either. Arabella, who was brought to this world as an accident by the chance of contraceptives failing to work on one night stand back in his junior year with University of Ceni, was now twenty and have had plenty of professional record in her career. Arabella, one of the 2052 Olympians least heard of the Quebecois media, was settling into ups and downs of her tennis career, and it was hard for Pierre and everybody else to figure her heard out at times.

'But guys....no matter what, we are one. Always were, are and will be. Together we dream as one.'

But Pierre knew that, no matter how different their understanding of the world were, the fragments of dreams and the Mount Atlas in the very art deco house were always going to bring these lads and lasses together. It meant being forged around the brotherhood and the sisterhood of not only those who have served for the sports club of Montreal Koreana. It meant living together in a house that disappear into the night's veil but always come back to the wanderer as a base camp. Finally, it meant that those who leave behind their pieces of heart and soul here be able to retrieve them whenever in need on various corners of the world they lived in, and never find themselves alone.

Figment II, Part 3 (3 years ago)

The weight of it all.

The final practice of the season had just ended, and coach Hwang dismissed them for the month of June - the IFCF commitments weren't going to commence until July, and it was generally advised for the coaches not to overburden the players with unnecessary team practises that could get them injured. It had worked well for Hwang Joon-Ho's Montreal Koreana so far into his tenure, with the team once again winning a crucial Q-League title, and the reward came in the form of everybody hurrying themselves into their month of summer holidays. Coach Hwang, the assistants and the physiotherapist were going to stay longer at the team lounge on the top floor of the complex's football division building, but this was more or less to get things settled. So Zinaida was all alone, and was contemplating whether to fly back to Prince Eric tomorrow morning, or to stay a week before making a decision.

Home...is so far...where I have spent so long, had once known everybody but is it really...

Zinaida was already inside the deserted women's locker room of the Practice facility, and she was looking before her mother's clothes that aligned perfectly on the hanger. It was unusual for any player, no matter her story, to put the clothes of their deceased parents on the hanger, let alone for two years, and Zinaida kept the fact mostly to herself as a way of remembering the past life back home. The blouse was perfectly pale in colour and carefully woven in fabric, while the jeans held the shades of indigo whose age had started to reflect with how its blue hues had paled. An elaborate thunderbird necklace, doused and elegantly carved in silver, had patterns all eyes would be drawn into, and she had worn them twice on team functions, tying her heritage - her father was an indigenous man of respected status in Prince Eric society - with grace whenever its services were needed. While she, who would rarely speak to the media beyond basic answers and kept to the closest group of friends of Maison M circles, seldom spoke about her family, there were glimpses like this that would remind people now and then.

But no matter what, I stay rooted to who I am.

Of course, on top shelf, Zinaida placed her Prince Eric Athletics cap for the summer season, when baseball would be played all over the pitches - this including her hometown, where the small-town Athletics held a cult-like popularity thanks to their consistent struggle for survival. Zinaida thought to herself as a tiny teardrop came out of her left eye, and she took a step back.

Have I lost too much...I know I don't regret any bit of my decisions but all that I've lost for a lifetime given to me....of chances... Zinaida thought once again, before picking up her cap and then wearing it over her head. It was going to be a long drive back to the Maison Misiriyaa from the Complex tonight, especially with what's a 20 minute drive of flat streets and then a minor hill going to feel like a 2 hour drive over the mountains of sentiments.

All to prove...and I have done so. But there's so much more.

Perhaps it was the weight of the world, or the fact that Zinaida Woodcarver held the key to the world of her choices, but the one with massive weight of own. On the evening of signing her first professional contract with Montreal Koreana, Zinaida had found out from Pierre McCarthy, her agent who naturally became her landlord alongside other, like-minded Montreal Koreana sportspeople of her age, that Pierre had done it all out of an unfulfilled duty. The duty...the duty... Zinaida felt that word shimmer into her consciousness as she closed the locker. She remembered how Pierre's left hand, which seemed frozen and unmoving the entire week of their connaissance, shook violently. When asked about the tremor, Pierre briefly mentioned to her about his juvenile days - how tensions flew between him and her mother Elora, how he had committed a pair of mistakes that shattered everything between them as high school sophomores, and how the list of what if's had weighed on the back of his head for many years.

The leap of faith that is.

But at the end of it stood a horizon, and while she has yet to figure out when the clouds would clear and she would be able to properly see the sun rise form it, Zinaida knew it was going to happen sooner than later. This has yet to really come post-her parents' death, but there's that hope that have inched closer and closer each and every step of the way. At least on the surface this was the case - A pair of excellent seasons, a national team call-up, representing the country at the U18WC and the DBC, seeing her name marked on the big 3 of The Gaegyeong Gazette, Le Mazepa and The Taegukgi (even though she really only read Le Mazepa, much to the disappointment of more conservative readership of the intellectual circles that formed the backbone of The Koreana Society), and being invited to every function imaginable....Zinaida were slowly climbing the walls on the surface.

Brick by brick.

But there's still lot more for Zinaida, and her friends, to grow into figures bigger than their material or external selves. In this city, and the Complex they spend their countless hours for, the bricks themselves represented the very foundation required of success that would not only carry them into professional successes, but life beyond it as well. So many legends had graced these brick walls and the murals since the early 20th century, but only a few dozen were remembered past the quintessential sands of time and dust. While Zina and her friends all started off well, time would tell if they could survive the trials of it all.

Defeat, but Not
Gatchingerrak Union 2-4 Eshialand
Brookstation 1-1 Eshialand

Losing feels bad, but draws just sting.
Eshialand has felt that pain not once, but twice, both to Brookstation.
The first time it hurt, but this time it killed.
Sealing their fate, they would not go to the World Cup.

Getting within two matches with nothing to show for it may have hurt their morale, but it isn't all gone.
Out of chances, but not out of hope, they will carry on.

Often, something like this is just the spark they'd need...
Who's to say that, though 2023 wasn't their year, that 2024 can't be any different?
Losing hurts, elimination hurts, but let's not let that define this team.
Success isn't a sprint, it's a marathon, and this team is only three miles in.
Anything I say is IC unless proven otherwise by a court of law.

The Tidal Wave
Tihon, Urrhed Island, Chromatika

Thirteen long matchdays later, after suffering a defeat to Sargossa and another to Eura, after drawing against the likes of Taksylvania, Al Qurija, and Geisenfried, it will all come down to one match against Nyowani Kiatara at the home of the Tihon Tide, at the Tidal Wave in Tihon, Urrhed Island, Chromatika.

After the pair of disappointing losses to Al Qurija and Eura, the team had had to completely ditch the usual playing by committee and field the best of the best. Against Taksylvania, it was Edith Fillar that came to the rescue in a last-minute header that handed the squad three points, while Vasiliy Marten Kuznetsov personally ensured that there would be no repeat of the tie that they had suffered in the first meeting against Geisenfried, scoring a hat trick via a tap-in, a header, and a long-range volley.

Unfortunately for the Chromatik retinue, Eura would also win their two matches, and all but secure the title with a seven goal lead in overall goal differential, as Eura and Chromatika played to an overall zero goal differential between each other.

Which meant that Chromatika would face Nyowani Kitara, and have to not lose, in order to get second place and a spot in the World Cup 90 Qualifying Playoffs.

Though this hadn't been their goal from the beginning - it was disheartening to think that it was due to two nil-nil draws that they were even in this position at all, when the entire method to Sybill and Hellion's madness was scoring from every position.

Too late to dwell on that now - they had a game to win, or they would end up watching from home while everyone else fought for the last ten sports to Vilita and Baker Park.

It had been a bit disheartening to hear the news that the ankle injury sustained by Victoire De Saint-Pierre at the tail end of the Geisenfried match would remove her from the roster to face Nyowani Kitara. Along with Kandice Sayer, who was nursing a bruised shoulder, this meant that two of the back four would be replacements - Grayson Fillar and Ha'nei Ighv. Grayson got the nod because he knew how to play with his older brother and was physically imposing, something that they would need against the Nyowani Kitara front, while Ighv got the nod because of her ability to be an extra shooter from range when the opportunity presented itself.

In the first meeting between Chromatika and Nyowani Kitara, a total of nine goals had been scored; Sybill hoped that Juxon would have an easier time of things, but wouldn't be surprised if the same total happened again. Both teams played a high-octane, ridiculously potent style that left tons of space and opportunities for counterattack. Chromatika would need to pounce on those opportunities and make sure that they made one or two more of them count in their favor than their opponent.

Thinking back to the many matches of import that she had had to face as a player, Sybill was glad that she was now on the Managing side of things. She had maneuvered the team to be in the best place it could be, and was ready to make substitutions as needed. The rest would be decided on the pitch.

When the news broke that the two Nyowani Kitara defectors would be invited to attend the game, mixed reactions came from the squad. On the one hand, a few of the players felt even more determined to defeat Nyowani Kitara, while others understood that the players weren't the ones making decisions and that they should be treated like any other opponent. Sybill and Hellion did their very measured best to put the focus back on football.

As soon as the whistle blew, they'd have their hands full just dealing with the NYK eleven. All the background noise could wait till the match was over.

One chance, in front of the home crowd, to put the other memories away and forge a new one. She was ready - she only hoped her charges were, as well.

Part 7: Twin Preparations
It can be said that modern Chromatik history started with the incorporation of the first national football team of Chromatika. Luuk Aart, the team's Captain, was under investigation by the Chromatik Party and the then-Chromatik government for masquerading as a Violet, someone in the upper castes of the Chromatik society, when he was born as a Red, a caste of laborers. When he was convicted despite not being complicit - Aart had had no knowledge - the Chromatik national team, led by Franscseca Larriet-Cortes, fled the country. They would spend a cycle using a stadium in Quebec as their home field, while events started to unfold in Chromatika.

The Rainbow Writers, a group of underground writers, started to spread propaganda supporting a free Chromatika while various rogue elements joined forces under the banner of what became known as the Rainbow Revolution. This Revolution, despite not having a singular leader, toppled the Chromatik Party, though Franscesca Larriet-Cortes was martyred in the process. The Chromatik Party was overthrown, and the Rainbow Revolution's interim government took power, finding an effective voice in Alina Krasnikova, the prior head of Chromatika's secret police that had turned her back on the principles of the Chromatik Party. Krasnikova became the first Premier of Chromatika, though she wasn't one that was voted into office.

Chromatika found itself facing multiple problems during the quest for its first free election not five years later. The remnants of the Chromatik Party had been spared due to keep the country's infrastructure intact after rudimentary inquiries were made to weed out the most offending members of the Chromatik Party regime. Now, many of them were proving to be a roadblock to Chromatika's future. Aided by an ally in Banija, Chromatika was successful in having its first free election, also employing the aid of The Chosen, a group of extraplanar angels whose fates had been tied to Chromatika by virtue of one of them interfering with Chromatik history. At the end, The Chosen were free to be their individual selves, and Chromatika had its first freely elected leader - Keri Wyse Aart.

Though Chromatika started to become a more stable nation, some underlying problems emerged. A group of people thought that the previous members of the Chromatik Party hadn't paid enough for their mistakes, while others looked at the plight of the previously oppressed population and claimed that the Rainbow Party wasn't doing enough to bring those people up to speed. Then, the Anaia-Atlantian Oceania split took the nation by storm, and though Chromatika decided to join the departing nations in Anaia, the fact that the country split from one of its closest political allies in Banija and the fact that most of the negotiations had been done behind closed doors wasn't taken well by the populace. Using this discordance as an ample opportunity, a crime syndicate called the Shadow Hand, a remnant of the Red Enclave that had been the first to oppose the Chromatik Party back before the Rainbow Revolution, started to make some bolder moves.

Recently, three events have shaken Chromatik politics to the very core. First, retired Chromatik footballer Han Ga-Yeong, a major supporter of the current Chromatik government and a spokeswoman for the rehabilitation of the previous ROYG community, was murdered. Not long after, a member of the Chambers of the Legislature, Chromatika's legislative branch, Jordan Lefebvre of the Traditionalist Party, was assassinated. Second, an explosion rocked one of the team buses of Chromatika's national team on the way back from Franscesca Larriet-Cortes International Airport, instantly killing the driver and injuring twelve others. Thankfully, none of the Chromatik footballers were badly injured, but the event proved to everyone that nobody was truly safe.

Finally, at the end of the most recent election, twenty-eight Representatives from the Rainbow Party and the Traditionalist Party joined forces to bring forth a new party, the Saebitdang, or the New Light Party. Hélène Embroise, the previous #1 confidant of Keri Wyse Art, the Premier, heads the New Light Party, breaking the supermajority of power that the Rainbow Party enjoyed and plunging the country into an uncertain future. (This RP has a good glossary of most recent events.) If you want a spoiler for what's really going on, click here.

The Tidal Wave
Tihon, Urrhed Island, Chromatika

As Keri Wyse Aart entered the VIP booth at The Tidal Wave, she acknowledged the people present: Hélène Embroise, the head of the New Light Party, Ji Yeung-Ju, the Mayor of Tihon, Viktor Karras, Jr., the head of the Chromatik Football Federation and the Rainbow League System, Kevin Nehemeyer, the Commissioner of the Port of Tihon, the ownership group of the Tihon Tide Football Club, Dr. Kekoto Manasaré, the current Banijan Ambassador to Chromatika... They were all important, but the two that caught her eye were the two that had been specifically invited: Omollo Ayange and Arendt Sundin, the two Nywonai Kitara National Team defectors that had applied for asylum in Chromatika for speaking out against the Nyowani Kitaran government. It had been a measured response by both the Premier and Embroise to invite them to this all-too important match between Chromatika and Nyowani Kitara, as a way of showing solidarity and of letting the Nyowani Kitara government know that Chromatika stood for the freedom of speech and expression, even in political matters.

Knowing that lingering on them would cause too much of a stir and potentially make them feel uncomfortable, the Premier reminded one of her aides to make sure that they were well cared for, and turned to survey the field. The last week had been a whirlwind in getting the events together. After she and Embroise had agreed on the CP Sponsorship Program, she'd only had to spend a day to convince the rest of the Rainbow Party to follow suit. A quarter of the Representatives in the Chambers of the Legislature severely disliked the notion of going back on the promise that had been made to the then-BIV+ community, but even some of them recognized the need for the then-ROYGs to be brought back up to society, and acknowledged that the government didn't have the funds nor the manpower to do it on their own. With some stipulation as to exactly how the CP Sponsorship Program would be created, governed, and maintained, the Program was signed into law three days later - the fastest law of its kind to be instituted in Chromatik history. The parties assigned would spend the next two months coming up with the infrastructure of the program, and then it would be put into effect on the first of January of the next year, the same day that the new Representatives took office.

The fallout of the mutual action between the Rainbow Party and the New Light Party was monumental. Seven Representatives that called themselves Traditionalists resigned, and two more went on extended leaves of absence - the remnants of the Chromatik Party, which had changed their names twice - first to the Checkers Party, then to the Traditionalist Party - was all but destroyed. The Red Party was beginning to hold a bit more sway, but Chromatik politics would be held by the Rainbow Party and the Saebitdang for the foreseeable future. It was both a blessing and a curse to see the Traditionalists gone - they had been a nuisance, but they'd also remained a convenient scapegoat for both the RP and the NLP to blame things on from time to time. Keri knew that in the next elections, with twenty-three spots now up for grabs, it would be all-out war to see who would have power. If the RP won, it could use its majority with the fact that Keri was Premier to enact more policies; if the NLP won the majority instead, things would be at a deadlock, and they'd have to both give and take to get things done.

For tonight, though? Tonight, they were all fans of the Chromatika Anomalies, hoping that the national team would not only win and secure their spot in the playoffs, but also knock out the Nyowani Kitara team that were being forced into being mouthpieces of the government. With having the defectors and the Banijan Ambassador present, it would be absolutely embarrassing if the Chromatiks lost; she had confidence in the squad - they'd handled the Kitarans in Tikariot, after all - and looked forward to the celebration of the victory that was to come.

"How's security?" came the quiet voice of Hélène Embroise, who had come by from the side, "Could get testy, I hope you took some precautions."

"One out of a hundred people in the stands are plainclothes officers," replied the Premier, keeping her voice low, "If anyone tries anything fishy, we'll be able to see it coming. Though, if you don't know, I don't think we have anything to worry about."

Hélène blushed scarlet, but then continued in the same almost inaudible whisper, "Currently, we are on the same side. As long as that lasts, I don't think you have anything to worry from me. I can't speak for everywhere else, though. I plan on taking you on in legitimate ways, through the people. You have my word on that."

Keri nodded in thanks, and hoped that the duo of April McLeod and Alina Krasnikova had managed to secure the premises. The only violence against the Kitarans tonight should come on the pitch and nowhere else, and she was adamant to make that happen, insisting on a heightened sense of alert and security. Nobody, internal nor external, would be allowed to mess with this match and what it stood for.

"I usually hate coming to this stadium," admitted Hélène, herself a Representative from Urrheddiao, "But for tonight, just this one night, this is home field."

"Come, Keri," she said softly, taking the Premier's hand and motioning toward their seats, "Let's be football fans first and foremost for the next two hours."

That sounded good to the Premier. All the work had been done in setting this up - though more work would follow, they could afford to enjoy themselves for two hours of bliss.
The Red Herring
Myana, Myana Island, Chromatika

Under a seedy bar that was blasting the opening announcements of the Chromatika-Nyowani Kitara match loudly among the midst of mumbled chatter in a crowd of rough-and-tumble people, there was a hidden trapdoor that led down to an extended tunnel system from the days when Myana had been full of emergency shelters for the Chromatik Party. Now, these tunnels formed a part of the Chromatik underground, a moving caravan of black market dealers and other smugglers that dealt in illegal things. It was a dangerous job - Chromatika took its laws very seriously, and the consequences of being caught were hefty - but it was also a lucrative one.

Henry Jackson had heard of the market underneath the Red Herring early in his Representative career from some notable sources. He'd asked them to keep it quiet for such days as this, and managed to even have those sources eliminated by the very Market (for they just called themselves that) in order to make sure that both he and the Market would be safe. For the cost of keeping themselves and himself safe, he was allowed the knowledge of the owner of the moving Market that existed below Myana, a greasy, seedy individual who went by the moniker of Enigma.

Besides the fact that the figure shared the same name as Enigma Armageddon (and hated to be reminded of it), Henry had tried to garner more information about Engima, to no avail. The figure always wore baggy clothes and a black mask that made it impossible to know whether they were male nor female, and they never spoke. Henry had only met Enigma in person one time when he'd made the initial deal to keep them both out of trouble; he'd then promised that he would only come to find Enigma when he was in real trouble.

Hoping that his credit with the Market still was good, Henry Jackson told the barkeeper of the Red Herring the secret phrase ("I'd like a jasper sandwich with a side of cowardice, please"), and was being escorted, blindfolded, down a long corridor. When he'd walked enough that he couldn't remember just how long he'd walked, the blindfold was removed, and he found himself seated on a stool in front of a countertop, with Enigma behind the counter. Next to Enigma was a young woman in working clothes who couldn't be more than twenty years old.

Enigma motioned for the young woman to speak, and she addressed Henry, "Mr. Jackson. We had wondered when you'd pay us a visit."

"Expecting me, were you?" asked Henry, a bit surprised.

"We have ears on what's been going on in the country," responded the young woman, "And figured you'd come by sooner or later."

"I can't stay in this damned country like this," Henry said, exasperated, "This is no place for people like me anymore."

"Mr. Jackson," continued the young woman, "You've done us a kindness by cooperating with us to keep the identity of our operation hidden. This means that you will be granted one boon. We can do one of three things for you."

"I like the sound of that," answered Henry, a bit of an edge in his voice, "What have you got?"

"If you'd like to disappear, we can arrange transportation for you to anywhere in Anaia, and give you the fake IDs needed to start a new life. You'll have to spend your own money, but I imagine with your salary as a Representative, you'll be able to make a living anywhere you end up. You just let us know, and we can get you to anywhere in Anaia," stated the young woman.

"Ugh," answered Henry, "I'd really hate to leave, this is my home - they've just changed it, convoluted it, diluted it."

"Instead, if you'd like to stay at your current position, you can serve your term out, retire, and live a quiet life. We could help you with the payments that you would owe as part of the CP Sponsorship Program. You could join us and work with us, and in exchange, we'll make sure that you're cared for," the young woman deadpanned.

"Join you? Uh... I'm not a criminal, no offense," remarked Henry, "No, I don't think I can do that."

"The last option," concluded the young woman who still hadn't introduced herself, "Is to aid you in your revenge. If you want to pursue revenge, we can aid you in terms of the armaments. We can't be implicated, so we cannot aid you with any personnel, but if you want certain things to take revenge yourself, we can help with that."

Henry slammed the countertop with emphasis.

"That's what I'm talking about!" he exclaimed, "I want a chance to go back against those slimy goons that have taken this country from me! Yeah, I want revenge!"

The young woman blinked, and looked at Henry with a look of pity.

Then, a different voice - a metallic one that came through a filter - spoke. It took a moment for Henry to realize that it was Enigma themselves that was talking to him.

"What would you like to attempt, Mr. Jackson? Assassination would be the most difficult - but we can provide you with a number of firearms if you'd request. If you want to set off a bomb instead, we can provide you with one of those. Or, would you like biochemical warfare? Name what you want, and we will provide you with what you need, given one caveat."

"And what's that?" blurted Henry, his mind racing.

"Anything you do will be at your own volition. We will take not take responsibility for anything, and Chromatik history will solely remember you for the events you cause. Also, we will not aide you in whatever you plan. After you leave here, we will leave, and we will never contact you again nor allow you to contact us. You are on your own."

Henry laughed mirthlessly, his voice echoing in the underground chamber.

"That's nothing new," he stated bitterly, "The country abandoned me a long time ago, my family abandoned me, and now... Yeah, you do what you have to do. I won't blame you."

"So," asked the young woman calmly, "What do you want from us for your long-time loyalty?"

As Henry thought of his options and his career, a solid picture came to his mind. They would never expect him to... Yes, that could work, if it was small enough to, and powerful enough to...

"I want the most powerful compact explosive you have," he declared confidently, "Something that will fit in a briefcase but have enough firepower to blow up an entire courthouse. I want it with a delayed timer that can also be detonated from range."

Enigma snapped their fingers, and a man dressed in black clothes from head to toe entered the room. Enigma spoke to him in a hushed tone, and the man left, returning twenty minutes later with a small briefcase.

"Good luck, Mr. Jackson," Enigma stated flatly, "I hope for your sake that you are successful, and I hope for Chromatika's sake that if you are, the aftereffects will only strengthen the country."

Henry opened the briefcase to see a digital interface with a timer, as well as a remote detonation device. He smiled back at Enigma and the young woman with a mirthless smile, nodded his thanks, and exited the room to be led back to the surface.

As his footsteps echoed into the distance, Enigma looked at the young woman.

"Are you sure that that was the right thing to do?" they asked, "The order came from up high?"

"Controller himself said to give him whatever he wants," answered Maria "Killjoy" Yesnev, one of the Shadow Hand, "And then report back with whatever Jackson took. Controller will do the next. You make sure that he'll never be able to find us again, and if he does, do to him what we do to anyone else who 'accidentally' finds us."

Removing the mask, a blonde-haired, pale woman by the name of Sharon Wilbur nodded, "Yes, Ma'am."

Killjoy retreated to the back offices of the Market, remembering the very last sentence of Controller's order.

Embroise has proven to be more useful than we imagined. Jackson will prove to be the perfect scapegoat to use as a smokescreen to disappear once more into the deepest shadows until we are needed again.

Previously

Uertza was a quiet town. Urti Kirna would concede that he was used to Rumiatzi, a metropolis of 9 million people. Even Urbizania, which is where he actually lived, could easily double (or triple?) Uertza in size. It was a little bit unfair to call Uertza ‘the middle of nowhere’, given it was the gateway to some beautiful national parks and a vital nexus between the region of Akialden (to its north) and the area of Lake Anzar (to its south). But to someone who had lived his whole life in the dense mega-urban environment of the mid-Leizaran Valley… this was the middle of nowhere.

His mission: find the full story on Itziar Lévêque, the footballer deported from the country for allegedly having faked his Astograthian nationality the last two decades. Soon after rolling into the train station, he'd called the number he’d gotten from Miss Teiyechea in Basabe. No answer. Predictable, in hindsight. He’d realised on the train ride that if the phone number was Lévêque’s dad’s, then the address probably was too. And if Lévêque’s papers were fake, then so were his father’s. He’d assumed there must be other journalists on the prowl, perhaps more local ones, even for this footnote of a story – but, more likely, it was in fact the Ministry of Interior with whom he was competing. They would, with almost absolute certainty, have already cleared out that address. Lévêque’s immediate family could well be in Kernansquillec by now, also deported.

Urti Kirna had nothing else to go on. No leads, no contacts. He’d never been to Uertza before. Out of the train station, a line of taxis idled to the side of an ample, sun-soaked plaza. Kirna figured he might as well try the address.

The driver he got was a young man with long, dusky hair and the darkening shadow of a beard. His seat was adorned with a cover of painted wooden beads; a pennant of burgundy and dark blue stripes hung from the rear-view mirror. Uertza Gymnastic, one of the local clubs – stuck in third-tier purgatory for who knows how long.

“544 Sahatsaiak street,” instructed Kirna.

The man nodded, started the car, and mumbled something to himself.

“Sahatsaiak. That’s a ways,” he said to Kirna in the rising pitch of a countryside accent.

“Far?” asked Kirna.

The driver looked at him through the mirror, eyebrows raised in surprise. “Nearly out of town. First time going?”

“Uh, yeah. Yeah. I’m following a story,” he said. After a pause that made him uncomfortable, he added: “I’m a journalist.”

“Oh, I see. That kind of story. Where do you work?”

This was a tougher question than most people thought, made no easier by how common it was. “I’m, uh, I’m freelance. So lots of places, you know Daineri Starting Goalkeeper?”

The driver started to shake his head, then spoke. “I might’ve heard of it.”

He was probably being polite, thought Kirna. “It’s a podcast. And a website. It’s kind of b- never mind. I write for them, mainly. The Raven, too.” The driver gave him a blank look and said nothing. “Local paper in Urbizania.”

That lit him up, at least. “You’re from Urbizania? My cousin’s moved there a few months ago.” Oh really. Everyone’s bloody cousin, aunt, and grandmother was moving to Urbizania lately, driving up the rent. Kirna would get squeezed out in a few years, same as he’d been squeezed from Rumiatzi.

“Lovely city,” he replied. “I’m from the City, though. Arreitio.” Another blank look.

“Arreitio?”

“Yeah, it’s where – it’s part of Rumiatzi. ‘The City’ is Rumiatzi, everyone calls it ‘The City’ there,” Kirna scrambled to explain.

“Ahhh, Rumiatzarra,” said the driver with a knowing click of his tongue.

“Yes, Rumiatzarra,” replied Kirna, resigned. To be a Rumiatzarra, the Astograthian-language demonym, immediately meant he was short-tempered, curt, fussy, and egotistical. And clueless of anything outside of The City, mid-size towns at the edge of the eastern badlands included.

“Well, you can’t all be bad,” said the driver with a chuckle.

“I’m following up on Itziar Lévêque,” blurted out Kirna in an attempt to change the topic.

“Lévêque…” the driver thought for a moment, then made a sound of recognition. “Ah… I heard he got deported?”

“Yeah, that’s what I’m following up on. This address is his father’s house. I think.”

“Hmm,” hummed the driver. Some minutes later he spoke up. “Well, we’re nearly there.”

The view out of the windows had morphed from tightly packed low apartments to terraces, to freestanding houses, to hedgerows and gated entryways leading, presumably, to mansions of some repute. The taxi stopped outside one of these: five hundred and forty-four, the numbers made of gilded metal.

“Do you know anything about Lévêque?” ventured Kirna as he stepped out.

The driver made a face. “No. He’s practically from Oyardo,” he replied.

Kirna had meant to ask the driver to wait for him a few minutes, but as he gawked at the gate the car backed out and sped away.

WCQ90 Watch: Total Chaos ahead of final matchday (Part 1)
Reported by Otksarin Times

The Gothanita Isles may be out of the running for the World Cup, but chaos elsewhere in the first half of the World Cup Qualifier groups means things will go down to the wire on Matchday 14 - with more than half the spots available. As part of our yearly analysis, the Otksarin Times will be leading the charge this year in TGI, doing the analysis for the final matchday. Given the general chaos that has been occurring in the first 10 groups, it is generally expected that these analysis might not necessarily be able to get the full list of permutations correctly, and that teams and fans are expected to exercise caution in referring to this.

Legend
Q - Qualified for the World Cup
A - Advanced to the Playoffs
X - Guaranteed to be top 2
Z - Unable to qualify for the World Cup, but may still advance to the playoffs
E - Eliminated

*Note: Only teams in the race is currently shown in the concise tables:

# Group 1 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Squidroidia (X) 13 7 3 3 22 19 +3 24
2 Kohnhead 13 7 2 4 28 20 +8 23
3 Valentine Z (Z) 13 7 0 6 34 32 +2 21

Final Matchday: Kohnhead vs Squidroidia, Valentine Z vs Savojarna
2nd seeds Savojarna are officially out of the contention, but face a trip to 3rd placed Valentine Z where they will play a role in the final race to the finish. Interestingly, however, Kohnhead are at home to Squidroidia, where both sides will be aiming to gain the direct ticket to the qualifiers. So...what is the permutation here? Valentine Z cannot beat neither the top seeds Squidroidia nor third seeds Kohnhead on head-to-head record, but still have a chance to make the playoffs, depending on the result in Kohnhead. For Squidroidia, they just have to not lose to secure their direct ticket. Kohnhead, on the other hand, needs to defeat Squidroidia to qualify directly for the World Cup. Should Squidroidia win in Kohnhead, Valentine Z will leapfrog Kohnhead with a home win and advance into the playoffs. Any other result in Kohnhead means Valentine Z will be eliminated, regardless of the result of their game against Savojarna.

# Group 2 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Pemecutan 13 9 0 4 36 17 +19 27
2 Equestria 13 8 2 3 26 20 +6 26
3 Le Choix 13 8 1 4 14 11 +3 25
4 Siovanija and Teusland (E) 13 6 2 5 26 25 +1 20

Final Matchday: Pemecutan vs Nimishzz, Muralos vs Equestria, Le Choix vs Siovanija and Teusland
2nd seeds Siovanija and Teusland are officially out of the contention, but face a trip to 3rd placed Le Choix where they will play a role in the final race to the finish. But the race is here is less than obvious - Every team still has a chance of getting somewhere. Pemecutan needs a win, which, in theory, should be easy, while Equestria also wants a win to capitalise on any slip by the leaders. Le Choix also needs a win to try to capitalise on any slip-ups elsewhere, since Le Choix can't exactly beat Pemecutan on goal difference, or beat Equestria on head-to-head record.

# Group 3 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Turori (Q) 13 11 0 2 37 15 +22 33
2 Drawkland (A) 13 9 2 2 46 25 +21 29

Final Matchday: Drawkland vs Turori
Drawkland handed the world number 2 a 3-0 trashing when they visited Turori, so the Elite 7 will definitely be looking to end their campaign on a high, in preparation for the upcoming playoffs. For Drawkland, any result will be crucial in determining their seeding in the playoffs, so they would want to do well. Meanwhile, Turori will be looking to bounce back from that shock defeat against Britonisea in Matchday 13, and will be pushing to end their qualification campaign on a high to avenge the loss against Drawkland.

# Group 4 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Graintfjall (Q) 13 10 1 2 34 15 +19 31
2 Trolleborg 13 7 2 4 29 21 +8 23
3 Juvencus 13 6 2 5 25 21 +4 20

Final Matchday: Montaña Verde vs Graintfjall, Trolleborg vs Delaclava, Juvencus vs Nagore
It is another qualification to celebrate for Graintfjall, and now the 2nd and 3rd seeds fighting to claim the playoff spot. It seems straightforward for Trolleborg - not lose, and they can enter the playoffs. A Juvencus win will allow them to advance to the playoffs, ahead of the BoF71 champions, should the latter lose against Delaclava. It seems straight forward enough in this situation, with all the remaining teams eliminated from the final matchday.

# Group 5 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Valanora (X) 13 10 2 1 32 13 +19 32
2 Huayramarca (X) 13 10 1 2 28 12 +16 31

Final Matchday: Sannyamathland vs Valanora, Krytenia vs Huayramarca
Valanora holds the strict head-to-head advantage over Huayramarca, but any slip up by the Elves will allow Huayramacrca to overtake. It won't be easy however, with Huayramacra taking a trip to East Starblyadia Krytenia in order to try to gain direct qualification ahead of the world number 4.

# Group 6 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Eura 13 8 3 2 32 15 +17 27
2 Chromatika 13 8 3 2 35 25 +10 27
3 Nyowani Kitara 13 8 1 4 37 30 +7 25

Final Matchday: Good Samaritans vs Eura, Chromatika vs Nyowani Kitara
Eura takes a trip to minnows Good Samaritans, while Chromatika hosts Nyowani Kitara in the final matchday. Eura probably secures top 2, given a +7 Goal Difference advantage over Chromatika. Eura might be more worried about having to play the playoffs ahead of Nyowani Kitara (ah yes, imagine the politicians reaction at that), which could be a possibility should Eura fail to win, and Nyowani Kitara grab that win in Chromatika. For Chromatika, they need to score more points than Eura, or improve on a +7 goal difference record to get that direct qualification spot.

# Group 7 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Kelssek (X) 13 6 5 2 30 18 +12 23
2 Astograth 13 6 2 5 21 16 +5 20*
3 Omerica (Z) 13 6 2 5 23 21 +2 20*
4 Wreckeria (Z) 13 5 4 4 29 27 +2 19
5 Gyatso-Kai (Z) 13 5 3 5 20 21 −1 18
6 Kiltoch (Z) 13 4 6 3 21 24 −3 18

*H2H GD: Astograth +1, Omerica -1

Final Matchday: Kelssek vs Jeeves Land, Astograth vs Kiltoch, Gyasto-Kai vs Omerica, Damukuni vs Wreckeria
This is the start of chaos. A total of 5 teams are in mathematical contention for one of the top 2 spots, with Kelssek's superior head-to-head advantage over Astograth and Omerica combined confirming their progress to either the World Cup or the playoffs. The math just adds up for Kelssek. Having won both games against Omerica, drew both games against Astograth, they scored 8 head-to-head points in a 3-way tie. Astograth and Omerica won one apiece in their head-to-head, resulting in Astograth being ahead on a +1 head-to-head goal difference over Omerica. But there are a bunch of teams behind waiting to steal the game. Wreckeria would be at Damukuni, trying to grab a win and hopefully leap frog Astograth and Omerica, should the latter 2 not win their games. Damukuni couldn't quite get the results they were supposed to get after having to deal with an existential crisis, and would be stuck at the bottom of the table alongside minnows Jeeves Land. Jeeves Land travel to Kelssek, and it should be a simple win for Kelssek, who will secure the top spot should they not lose their final game. For Astograth, a win will guarantee them a top 2 spot (H2H Points in a 3-way tie: Kelssek 8, Astograth 5, Omerica 3), though they would prefer Omerica not win their game, because with Kelssek and Astograth level on head-to-head record, a shock Kelssek loss, together with an Astograth win big enough to overturn a +7 goal difference deficit, will be enough to send Astograth straight to Vilita and Baker Park. For Omerica, they can't qualify for the World Cup directly, so for them to enter the playoffs, they need to score exactly more points than Astograth. Basically, hope Kiltoch do them a favour. And also need Omerica themselves to secure a good result at Gyasto-Kai. For Wreckeria, Gyasto-Kai and Kiltoch, anything less than a win is game over.

# Group 8 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Cassadaigua (X) 13 8 5 0 33 17 +16 29
2 Polkopia (X) 13 7 5 1 34 22 +12 26

Final Matchday: Cassadaigua vs Mertagne, Polkopia vs Reçueçn
Both teams have secured top 2, but neither have booked their direct ticket just yet. Polkopia has a chance of making it - just overturn the +4 goal difference deficit, together with a Cassadaigua loss, and last cycle's surprise packages could easily continue their miracle run into the World Cup. It has been a massive run for Polkopia. With 2nd and 3rd seeds Electrum and Reçueçn failing to put that much of a resistance, Polkopia is now in a good position to even secure their 2nd consecutive World Cup appearance right from unranked, and for the 66th-ranked team, they surely would be all out to do just that tonight.

# Group 9 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Nephara (Q) 13 10 1 2 47 22 +25 31
2 Milchama (Z) 13 5 6 2 30 27 +3 21
3 Pekoland (Z) 13 6 2 5 29 28 +1 20
4 Independent Athletes from Quebec (Z) 13 5 5 3 25 26 −1 20
5 Barunia (Z) 13 6 1 6 23 24 −1 19

Final Matchday: Barunia vs Milchama, New Zhengguo vs Pekoland, Independent Athletes from Quebec vs Indusse
Nephara has secured their qualification early on, which also means only the playoff spot is up for grabs. It has been a really chaotic run for the teams in the chase. 2nd seeds IA Quebec and 3rd seeds Barunia are at an disadvantage heading into the night, with 6th seeds Milchama and 7th seeds Pekoland in the drivers' seat with regards to the playoffs. Milchama has a tough game at Barunia, where both sides will be wanting to secure the wins they need. Barunia needs to win the game to stand any chance, and hope IA Quebec and Pekoland don't do better than a draw. For IA Quebec and Pekoland, the race is on. Both have games against eliminated opponents, and both would need a win to keep their hopes alive. IA Quebec needs to push for a larger win against 4th seeds Indusse, given that Pekoland holds a +2 goal difference lead and another tiebreaker advantage in terms of the number of wins. Milchama just needs a win, though a draw might be enough if Pekoland and IA Quebec cannot produce wins. There are no other tiebreakers to consider for this group, however. If Milchama, Pekoland and IA Quebec are level (only on 21 points), that means Barunia has won and will advance. If Barunia, Pekoland and IA Quebec are level (only on 20 points), that means Milchama drew and are on 22 points, and therefore, has advanced. The only tiebreaker is Pekoland vs IA Quebec, but they are level on head-to-head and it will go down to goal difference (currently Pekoland leading by 2) and wins (Pekoland 6, IA Quebec 5).

# Group 10 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Jeruselem 13 7 3 3 30 24 +6 24*
2 Ochre Islands 13 8 0 5 17 15 +2 24*
3 Kyzhurkistan 13 6 3 4 17 18 −1 21

*H2H Points: Jeruselem 6, Ochre Islands 0

Final Matchday: Jeruselem vs TGI, Ochre Islands vs Pluvia and the Saxean Isles, Kyzhurkistan vs Soldera
The game is far from over for these 3 teams. Our very own Yellow Lions travel to Jeruselem, aiming to produce yet another shock win against the Naked Princesses, and that would provide some plots and twists to a group that has been chaotic in nature. For Jeruselem, a draw secures them the top 2 spot, a win secures the direct spot. Ochre Islands will need to score more points than Jeruselem for a direct spot; else a draw is enough to secure the top 2 spot. Kyzhurkistan needs to win, and hope Jeruselem loses.
Some tiebreakers: Between Jeruselem and Ochre Islands, Jeruselem is ahead on head-to-head points (Jeruselem 6, Ochre Islands 0). Between Ochre Islands and Kyzhurkistan, Ochre Islands is ahead on head-to-head goal difference (Ochre Islands +1, Kyzhurkistan -1). Between Jeruselem and Kyzhurkistan, Kyzhurkistan is ahead on head-to-head points (Kyzhurkistan 4, Jeruselem 1). Between all 3, the head-to-head points are: Jeruselem 7, Kyzhurkistan 7, Ochre Islands 4. In that case, Kyzhurkistan can qualify for the World Cup directly, because moving on to head-to-head goal difference, they hold the lead over Jeruselem.

WCQ90 Watch: More calm and peace in this half of the bracket (Part 2)
Reported by Poafmer Times

Poafmersia heads into the final matchday aiming to secure a direct ticket instead of playing the dreaded playoffs. Elsewhere, teams are calculating their chances of entering the qualifiers as the 14-matchday World Cup Qualifiers come to a close. Here, we look at the permutations of what has been an interesting qualification round for the 90th edition of the World Cup.

Legend
Q - Qualified for the World Cup
A - Advanced to the Playoffs
X - Guaranteed to be top 2
Z - Unable to qualify for the World Cup, but may still advance to the playoffs
E - Eliminated

*Note: Only teams in the race is currently shown in the concise tables:

# Group 11 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Zwangzug (Q) 13 10 2 1 25 10 +15 32
2 South Newlandia (A) 13 8 3 2 37 24 +13 27

Final Matchday: South Newlandia vs Zwangzug
Same as group 3. The only difference is that the top seeds are the one playing the playoffs. Nothing to see here, move on, move on.

# Group 12 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Tumbra (X) 13 10 1 2 31 12 +19 31
2 Adab 13 10 0 3 40 29 +11 30
3 Starblaydia (Z) 13 9 1 3 35 19 +16 28

Final Matchday: Tumbra vs Quakmybush, Adab vs Flavovespia, Starblaydia vs South Covello
All 3 teams just need to win. For Tumbra, a win secures the direct spot. For Adab, a win secures top 2, and possibly the direct spot if Tumbra doesn't win. For Starblaydia, they need to win and hope Adab doesn't to keep the playoff spot. It is as straighforward as that, though their opponents probably aren't, on paper. Tumbra is against 6th seeds Quakmybush, Adab is against 3rd seeds Flavovespia, and Starblaydia is at 5th seeds South Covello. 3 tough matches.
Tiebreakers to consider:
- 2-way between Tumbra and Starblaydia: H2H Points - Tumbra 6, Star 0
- 2-way between Adab and Starblaydia: H2H Points - Star 6, Adab 0
- 2-way between Tumbra and Adab: Level on H2H Points and GD
- 3-way between Tumbra, Adab and StarblaydiaL: H2H Points - Tumbra 9, Star 6, Adab 3

# Group 13 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Ko-oren (Q) 13 11 0 2 24 6 +18 33
2 Savigliane (Z) 13 9 1 3 28 15 +13 28
3 Valladares (Z) 13 8 3 2 37 22 +15 27

Final Matchday: Savigliane vs Valladares
To the wire! Valladares won at home against Savigliane in Matchday 7, and would be looking to repeat that to secure their playoff spot. Savigliane, on the other hand, just needs to avoid a loss. Much more straightforward as compared to a hell lot of other groups.

# Group 14 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Poafmersia (X) 13 9 2 2 38 26 +12 29
2 Pasarga (X) 13 7 6 0 38 12 +26 27

Final Matchday: Poafmersia vs Pasarga
Another group going down to the wire, this time, it features our very own Red Panjias against the Wanderers of Pasarga. Should Poafmersia avoid a defeat like the one in Pasarga, then Poafmersia would have booked their direct spot. And against unbeaten Pasarga, it would be something the Red Panjias would be looking to achieve.

# Group 15 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 HUElavia 13 9 1 3 34 23 +11 28
2 TJUN-ia 13 9 1 3 28 13 +15 28
3 Ethane 13 8 3 2 19 9 +10 27

Final Matchday: TJUN-ia vs HUElavia, Aut-Ves-Nat vs Ethane
This group isn't as straight forward as the last 2. Ethane has an advantage over HUElavia, but not against TJUN-ia, and shouldn't bank on what is to happen in TJUN-ia. A win for Ethane might bring them to the playoffs should TJUN-ia vs HUElavia end in a win, and possibly even to the World Cup if TJUN-ia vs HUElavia ends in a draw. For HUElavia, they can afford to draw, holding the head-to-head advantage over TJUN-ia. For TJUN-ia, they would surely be gunning for the win, as a draw would spell elimination for them if Ethane wins their game.

# Group 16 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Farfadillis (Q) 13 11 2 0 54 20 +34 35
2 Vdara (A) 13 9 2 2 32 23 +9 29

Final Matchday: Farfadillis vs Vdara
Group 3 and Group 11, repeated. Move on.

# Group 17 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Banija (Q) 13 11 1 1 32 15 +17 34
2 Brenecia (A) 13 8 4 1 30 17 +13 28

Final Matchday: Banija vs Sangti, Cabo Azure vs Brenecia
Group 3, 11 and 16 repeated. Wait, hold on, these two teams just played each other! Well then, nothing much left to see, move on.

# Group 18 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 The Holy Empire (Q) 13 9 3 1 42 17 +25 30
2 Mytanija (A) 13 8 3 2 38 21 +17 27

Final Matchday: Eastfield Lodge vs The Holy Empire, Pyazhnaya vs Mytanija
The Holy Empire holds the head-to-head advantage, therefore, the world number 1 is already through while Mytanija has to navigate the playoffs. Nothing much left to see, move on.

# Group 19 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Audioslavia (Q) 13 9 2 2 29 11 +18 29
2 Tikariot (Z) 13 7 4 2 35 26 +9 25
3 Hapilopper (Z) 13 7 2 4 27 22 +5 23
4 Abanhfleft (Z) 13 6 4 3 31 25 +6 22

Final Matchday: Audioslavia vs Tikariot, Hapilopper vs Rhubarbton, Abanhfleft vs Kimi-Suomi
Abanhfleft holds the head-to-head advantage over Tikariot, so they are in contention. If Tikariot loses, however, Hapilopper would be in the playoffs with a win, so Abanhfleft needs to win, hope Tikariot loses, and Hapilopper can't win at home. For Tikariot, a draw is enough to secure the playoffs, given their head-to-head advantage over Hapilopper.

# Group 20 Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Squornshelan Remnant States (X) 13 9 2 2 26 15 +11 29
2 Kandorith (X) 13 8 3 2 35 25 +10 27

Final Matchday: StrayaRoos vs Squornshelan Remnant States, Kandorith vs The Republic of Western Sol
For Kandorith to take the top spot, they need to win and hope Squornshelan Remnant States doesn't. It is straight forward for Kandorith, who holds an head-to-head advantage over the Confederates going into the final matchday. Squornshelan Remnant States needs to win away at StrayaRoss to guarantee that tehy will keep the top spot.

Damage Limitation

World Cup 90’s qualifying route, which started so hopeful with what had been categorised as “an accessible group”, has been an unmitigated disaster. Consequently, Francisco Grilo was sacked from his position and the position is currently being filled in by stand-in Valentim. Entering the position, New Lusitania were six points off the play-off position, making it all about damage limitation and trying for a miracle.

Valentim had started with a relatively easy game to gain confidence, hosting Nimishzz at the Dom Dinis. His job was satisfactory enough, with a convincing 4-1 victory which looked confident, something the team hadn’t really looked like since the initial matchdays. Defence looked slightly better with a back-four with special attention going to Domingues, who performed excellently in his full-back position. This, of course, doesn’t shadow the good work done up front by Paciente which netted the team two goals directly plus one through an assist. The second consecutive home game didn’t go so well, however, as Muralos managed to get the better of the Selecção (1-2) at the Anta do Dragão. It wasn’t a spineless performance however and the loss isn’t representative at all of what was put on the field that day, but it’s the way football goes and a very costly defeat it was for New Lusitania.

When the international break returned, Valentim put on another good show in the voyage to Siovanija and Teusland with a 2-4 away win. Silveira showing form and the welcome return of Caldeirão really set everything up for a good performance. Fernando managed to pull an assist but his performances have slightly dropped comparatively to 89 – his replacement for Caldeirão by next cycle completely is something to be expected. Another moralising win for the team but their reception of Le Choix at home wasn’t as felicitous. There was no real reason for this loss, despite their adversary’s form, but they were completely played off the park that day – the only reason it only stayed at 0-1 was some decent defending and good saves from Lopes. A slight back track from the team, which sadly but unsurprisingly translates in their demise and elimination.

New Lusitania though as a whole doubtful that the Cup of Harmony berth will present itself this year, will still have something to play for in this fourteenth and final matchday besides pride… sort of. There’s still some conviction to get as high up as possible which may be where they are now – a disappointing fifth. The team are still trying to break even however, with five wins, two draws and six defeats, at least a victory in the final match against The Cordian Isles would be a silver lining to complete the route. The second best attack and second worst defence in the group will look to also keep their positive scoring record currently tarnished by a -1 goal differential – it all may seem trivial, but it’s terribly important when nothing else is going on.

It all leaves a person to wonder – what if. After all, the group isn’t wrapped up and should they have won the two games they *should* have against Muralos and Le Choix, there’d still be an outside chance. It’s Pemecutan, Equestria and the latter nation in the previous sentence who fight for it however with two out of the three keeping their hopes up. For those who chose to ignore whatever New Lusitania were doing, it was a qualifying route full of drama, talent with great performances from both young and old, minnows and established nations; and with the FLF re-considering their position on the World Cup as a whole administratively back in their headquarters, it truly is worth soaking it all in in this final match which is more than just pride. It always is after all, more than another ninety minutes for everyone and so the team will most definitely act accordingly

Episode 7 - The Betrayal
S01 | E01 | E02 | E03 | E04 | E05 | E06

Defending their world title in the home of
an old enemy, the team are undefeated and
face the World Cup co-hosts, but there's
a threat of treachery in the last eight.

Jacqueline Maitland
Striker, World Cup 29
Narrator: Of all the rivalries the Starblaydi national football team has, none has quite the venom than the Bekkside derby with Krytenia. The two nations, so similar in outlook yet poles apart on the world stage, rivals in every conceivable space. One stretched seemingly effortlessly for gold, while the other toiled to perennial nearly-men in the shadow of their near neighbour.

The countdown of the opening ceremony of the 29th World Cup was held in Isserson, and you know exactly how galling it was for the Krytenian half of the hosting committee to literally finish their countdown with that famous picture of Georges Blanc lifting the trophy in the Paladindome after the incredible tension and nerves of a sudden-death penalty shootout decided in the seventh round.

Archive footage wrote:A hush falls upon the Isserson Stadium as the video screen cuts into life. A timer counts down from thirty seconds; as it hits :28, each second has a still photo backdrop of each previous champion lifting the trophy. Starblaydia's second triumph fades out, and the clock hits :00, accompanied by fireworks.

As defending Champions, Starblaydia were ranked number two in the world, only behind Bedistan, who had made three straight finals and only lost the most recent one to the team in white and purple. These two sides, along with fellow three consecutive top-three finishes of Liventia, were by far and away the best teams in the competition, and it was extremely difficult to see any side outside of those three lifting the title.

Starblaydia were yet to lose a match in their World Cup 20 campaign, conceding just five goals in 14 matches and drawing a single game against Legalese 1-1. They were, defensively, one of the stingiest sides in international football that tournament, anchored in front of the defence by Pedro Rujano of the Rejistanian First Division side Na~ovi Nanti, a classic Starblaydi number four defensive midfielder. They were led by Paul Noble, in his fourth straight Finals appearance, surging towards being the post-capped Starblaydi player ever. Up front the battering ram of Johan Keifner complimented the pace and guile of young Jacqueline Maitland, along with a number of formidable options from the bench. Some were hanging all sorts of ridiculous and preemptive labels on them already, but Khim Azanulbizarn's side were still taking it one game at a time.

Starblaydi archival newspaper wrote:One of the many defending World Champions in the side, Noble's presence on the pitch is what Starblaydia is all about. Industry, skill and desire. Even the Nedalian press have been hanging the 'greatest team in the Universe' title on Starblaydia recently and all signs point to Starblaydia being ranked as the number-one side in the world come the end of the tournament.

In the Group Stage, Krytenia would stumble in that opening match to a 2-2 against regionmates Bettia, before overcoming Spaam 3-1 and other rivals Fmjphoenix 2-1 to top Group A. Starblaydia were in fine goalscoring form, though, brushing aside the newcoming Andossa Se Mitrin Vega 3-1, Quakmybush 3-0, and demolishing Rejistania 5-2 to decide who qualified first and who qualified second from Group B.

The second round saw Krytenia and Starblaydia progress to a dream Quarter-Final match-up: 2-1 for the Aces over Sqournshelous, and 3-0 for Starblaydia over The Islands of Qutar. Absolutely everybody knew just how important this last-eight match was going to be. This wasn't just football, this wasn't just politics, this was going to be actual war.

Nedalian archival newspaper wrote:This could potentially be the match of the tournament; there is just so much happening here. For one, anyone who knows anything about Atlantian Oceania affairs (that’s probably not a lot of people) will know that the Kryties recently left the Starblaydi-led SAAS and jumped over to the SDL, the two major political rivals of the AO. To make matters worse, Krytenia also placed an embargo on all Starblaydi goods, as well as banning Starblaydis from traveling into the country. Politics aside, they’re just two fantastic football teams.

It’s a rare occasion that sees a talented team such as Krytenia become underdogs for a victory in their very own country, but the Purple Army is about as ruthless a football team as one will find. Our SDL brethrens are going to have a tough time trying to accomplish what they’ve set out to do, and we wish them all the luck in the world, because they’re going to need it against what could be the finest squad in existence today.

Not many decent teams get to the knockout stages of the World Cup in their own country and suddenly become the underdogs, but Krytenia were in that position. What was worse was that in the build-up to the Cup itself, Starblaydi travellers and goods had been banned from setting foot on Krytenian shores, bar the World Cup delegation itself. Everyone gets to travel with their team to a World Cup, right? Sing the songs in the streets, drink in in the bars, chill in the cafe in the summer, it's the whole gang on tour. But not this time for Starblaydi fans.

Narrator: The World Cup had often been used as a tool for political advancement, such as when the CommuniZts and CapitaliZts when the competition was in its teens, but never quite so brazenly as President Dominique Domasca had done. Starblaydi protests to the World Cup Committee, however, were rebuffed in no uncertain terms.

Krytenian archival newspaper wrote:On paper, Starblaydia are reigning champions and look nigh-on invincible. However, there are several factors that could swing the balance.

Starblaydia became an away team like no other, with no home fans permitted. Sure, there was the occasional neutral who'd turn up and cheer for them, or fans who couldn't get tickets for their own team and sort-of adopted the potentially title-winning side as their own, but they didn't know the songs, didn't have the same passion as the banned Starblaydi passport holders would have displayed. There was one other thing the team in white and purple had against them - the referee.

Narrator: Co-hosting the World Cup with Krytenia was the nation of Casari, an island just off to the east coast of Starblaydia and most notable for their seemingly-complicated proposals on how to organise tournaments. Selected to officiate this match was a Casaran referee, Javis Wilson.

What is it with rivalries with the nations just to the west and east of us? How is that always happening and what it is about those who share a latitude with Starblaydia? And why did this all have to coalesce and basically gain human appearance in the form of Javis Wilson? Absolutely ridiculous. Within a minute you knew, you just knew, that it was going to be a long and hard day.

Krytenian archival newspaper wrote:It was in this hostile atmosphere that the match got underway, and immediately it became clear things were going to be "a bit tasty".
Starblaydi archival newspaper wrote:The first tackle in a football match is almost more about psychology than whether you get the ball or not. It's the challenge that says "Hello, you're in trouble for ninety minutes", it's the first test of the referee and how he'll react to things, it tests everything about the competition of a football match. So when your defensive midfield anchor executes a tenacious tackle on his opposite number and receives a yellow card within 30 seconds of the kick-off, you know something is wrong.

Pedro Rujano does what Starblaydi Number Fours do at the first opportunity, which is put in a solid tackle to let the opposition know you're there. Probably not a foul, just a bit rough, a little bit physical. It was a tester. And the result was a yellow. They were still folding up the novelty flags that had been pulled off the field, and there's Starblaydia's defensive fulcrum in the book. It was abundantly clear that this referee was going to be a homer. It was eleven against twelve.

Starblaydi archival newspaper wrote:Starblaydia already knew what they were up against in their opponents, the crowd and the referee: something that can rarely be overcome. The feeling immediately went around the team and staff that they were going to be cheated out of the Cup. But Paul Noble took a hold of his team and rallied them under the initial assault as the Aces put fast, pacy, one-touch football together, laying Starblaydia's penalty area to siege in the opening minutes.

The worst thing about it, though, was that Krytenia were actually pretty good. Even with a normal home match, they would have stood a decent chance. They didn't need to be doing all this to get a victory, but they certainly were choosing to. There were yellow cards a-plenty for Starblaydia and barely a peep from the whistle when Starblaydi players were similarly fouled. When Starblaydia had their first shot, a hopeful toe-poke from Johan Keifner, the crowd responded like the Aces had won the Cup when it went wide. It was a terrible atmosphere to force any team to play in.

Starblaydi had a goal disallowed for a 'foul' on the defender, Andy Snelders, but the replays showed minimal contact at best, but more likely this was for the crime of Durum Rage breathing in the general vicinity of the Aces defender on his way to put the ball in the net.

Starblaydi archival newspaper wrote:Time and again Starblaydia were thwarted. Whenever they did manage to halt the momentum given to Krytenia by the officials, they were brought up for minor, even non-existent infringements. Jackie Maitland was audible in her scream after being given - unjustly - offside for the seventh time in the half. A booking shortly followed for dissent.

In order to make any headway whatsoever, Starblaydia had to be absolutely perfect, without even the barest hint of a rules infraction. It took over a half an hour of toil, but they finally managed it. A sweeping play with no contact against Aces players, while staying so far onside they were practically in a different field. Jacqueline Maitland scored, and right across the eastern side of Lake Bekk, supporters went absolutely wild. The only cheers in the stadium, though, were from the players and staff of the SFA. It was exceptionally muted.

Krytenian archival newspaper wrote:The joy was to be short-lived though; Rujano received a second yellow card, reportedly for "simulation", though there did seem to be accidental contact from Tejai's arm (Rujano would claim it was a deliberate elbow). Starblaydia now felt it was ten versus twelve, an uphill struggle in anyone's book.
Starblaydi archival newspaper wrote:The referee sent Pedro Rujano to the stands for... well... we're not quite sure, really. The TV replay looked like he was given his second yellow for being elbowed in the face by Tejai. Whether that has been entered into the list of rules is beyond this reporter, but nonetheless Starblaydia were down to ten as the first half ended.

It wasn't going to get any better than that for Starblaydia. Not only a man down, but their most important midfield lynchpin, things went from bad to worse. More yellow cards, more free kicks, more frustration, as Starblaydi players felt the game slipping away from them. Demonstrably so, if you care to watch it back with even a half a neutral eye. The Aces were getting closer, with Marlon Friday hitting the bar from a free-kick. They were stretching the defence, pinning them back and constantly pushing for the equaliser. It was like they were playing downhill with a wind assist. Earlier it had been eleven versus twelve, and now it was ten versus twelve. How can anyone possibly compete against that?

Krytenian archival newspaper wrote:The Starblaydi players were wary of breathing near the Aces players, such was their creeping paranoia, and eventually substitute Colin Eccleston would thrash the ball home. One-one, and that was how it would stay through normal time, and right up until the 119th minute of the game.

You couldn't say it hadn't been coming. Right from the first whistle the fix was in to get the Aces a goal and keep them in the game, but Starblaydia had the quality to not let the game truly get away from them. Full time came and went with the scores locked at 1-1 and increasingly exhausted Starblaydi players at the centre of a tornado of home support for their opponents. Azanulbizarn and Noble rallied their troops, knowing they were half an hour plus penalties away from a third straight Semi-Final. They just needed to hold out, overcome and make it through.

Krytenian archival newspaper wrote:With penalties looming, the home side put forward one last attack. Tejai broke away on his favoured left side, skipping past full-back Tabitha Di Bradini before pulling the ball back. Juan Valdez' hoofed attempt clearance found only Wood-Collins though, and he found Friday. His pass found Tejai running back from an offside position, but astonishingly, the flag stayed down. Even then, goalkeeper David Bedford conspired to stop him, but the parry found its way back to Tejai, who put the ball away. The goal was given, and moments later, the match was over. Krytenia were in the semi-finals.

Plain and simple, Tejai was a mile offside. It stood, and Starblaydia were out. They were so out, in fact, that they didn't even stop at the team hotel on the way back, headed straight to the airport. That in of itself was another difficulty, as the spontaneous spilling out into the streets of cities right across Krytenia brought traffic to a standstill. In Emberton and Avidia, Bromham and Ousevale, celebrating Krytenians were simply ecstatic. In Starblaydi cities, however, the mood was entirely different.

Starblaydi archival newspaper wrote:The Krytenian embassy in Jhanna was burnt to the ground by an angry mob in the early hours of this morning in response to the biggest act of malice ever handed out to a Starblaydi football team. Police and firefighters on the scene stood idly by, only making sure the chaos and damage didn't spread to any neighbouring buildings.

It's a match that still cranks up the tension between the two sides to this day, mostly because it's trotted out every time there's a meeting between the two in the presumption that there'll be a sequel. But it always rankles the fan of white and purple. Truthfully it should do the same in any neutral, too, but then again, sometimes seeing the defending champion brought low is cathartic for everyone. There's also one real takeaway from this game, and it's not the conspiracy theories or the manufactured circumstances, it's that overconfidence kills, yo.

Krytenian archival newspaper wrote:Overnight, the match had become the match. Bigger than Audioslavia v Squornshelous. More polarised than Eauz v SLANI. People realised, when Krytenia and Starblaydia met, something big would happen.

Final score from Mercia Stadium, Bromham:
_Krytenia_ 2-1 _Starblaydia_
_Eccleston 69, Tejai 120+1_ - _Maitland 37_

Narrator: Starblaydia would manage to bounce back from this travesty of a match, one long considered as the greatest calumny in Starblaydia's football history, by reaching the Final of the following tournament. World Cup 30, however, would be the last great zenith for the national team, before soon reaching a crushing nadir.

Márcus Ion Mutu announces absence

Natanians and Nosts' national football team manager,Márcus Ion Mutu, announced hours before the match against Nephara that he would not lead the team this coming Campionato Esportiva.
He alleged the need for studying and possibily updating his tactics style.
"I have been thinking about this for a long time" and "it's a decision I took with the best for the team and the nation in mind" are his justificatives, along "[I] have already talked to and with the team about this, long, long, ago, besides the person who will take care of the team is someone of utmost trust, resposability and competence." to justify and calm."I tried to renovate the team but couldn't do as much as I wanted" was also said.
The confederation did not announce who the temporary substitute is gonna be.Nor it said anything about (possible) big renovations on the tem, whose squad has a high average age.

Independent Athletes from Quebec Fires Entire RQFA Board, manager Fabrizio Kaal after World Cup 90 Qualifying Failure

Bob Devers-Shin

RENEEGRAD, CAPITALE-NATIONALE - Independent Athletes from Quebec manager Fabrizio Kaal, and the entire Royal Quebecois Football Federation Board have been dismissed, mid-game, following the Grim Reapers' failure to qualify for the playoff round of World Cup 90 qualification stage, to be held this June in Commonwealth of Baker Park and Vilita.

The 49-year old Licentian, who signed a two-cycle, four year contract with Quebec following three cycles of steady, promising performance as the manager of The Licentian Isles, is fired in international disgrace after a horrific second half left him criticised for leaving the northwestern Anaia nation not only fail to qualify for the second straight World Cup, but also finish with their worst results in 50 years (World Cup 65).

The Royal Quebecois Football Association statement remains simple on the matter, only saying that 'Mr. Fabrizio Kaal, the coaching staff and the RQFA Board, have been dismissed from his position on the national team, effective immediately.'

A Journey Through The Portal: CHAPTER SEVEN

Postby Gyatso-kai » Mon Jan 31, 2022 1:10 am

::: On The Way From The National Institute of Cartography and Vexillology, Fengxian District, Republic City, Gyatso-kai :::
2240 hours, 29 January 2022.1

The silver Richan Huoti lurched forward in the bustling late-evening traffic of Republic City. The Fengxian District was home to many corporate offices and headquarters, as well as covering the eastern edge of the capital core, and the 3rd Ring Road that the Hu31ti was cruising down was one of the finest roads in all of the Republics; with scenic views pasting through both the modern and historical aspects of the second-oldest district in the capital.

Not that it matters…

As the Huoti sped along, Lin Zhao sat comfortably behind the wheel; the vehicle on cruise control and his eyes on the road. Lin had tuned in to a late night repeat broadcast of ASPN’s podcast “Pucks & Balls” and he was simply catching up on the most recent news in Avatarian sports. Lin had missed the World Cup match today and yesterday thanks to the release of the new Atlantian Oceanian map and the various meetings today with numerous parties within the cartographical disciplines; he had not been able to watch many of the games the Bisons played in the initial group stage, though the team was on the up. Despite having started with an abysmal 1-1-4, the team had managed to secure four more wins thanks in part to the sidelining of goalkeeper Armok Hikari and giving Hamada Roshi a few select starts. Of course, any man is bound to make a mistake, and yesterday… that mistake was made. The team managed to lose to Wreckeria before drawing Kelssek 1-all and falling from third in the group just behind Wreckeria with 17pts, but then in the final matchday, the team scored three goals over eventual-second-in-group Omerica, before letting the Incorrigibles score the game-winning goal to send them into the World Cup Proper to face Huayramaca, and the Bisons back home with an 5-3-6 record.

And I had such high hopes…

To think, the National Sports Council had wanted to name Wong Haru officially the Head Coach this campaign, after such an impressive AOCAF tournament run. However, the fates deemed otherwise and an announcement never found its way from the Office of the Director; for whatever reason, Vhett Boba deemed it a waste of precious ink and parchment.

I can only imagine how well that post-campaign briefing is going to go…

INCOMING CALL

The touchscreen in the middle of the dash began to flash, signalling to Lin that he was receiving a phone call. The number was not listed, and the screen only read ‘Government Line’, which to Lin meant only one caller at this hour.

The Earthbending Corps of Agricultural Development…

A quick tap of the control on his steering wheel answered the phone, and Lin spoke first. ”Good evening.”

Please hold while this call is encrypted.
Lin knew the routine well enough by now; he would give a simple greeting, a monotone voice on the other end would state the line was open, some harsh electronic noise would follow, and then…

The line is now secure. Deputy Director Zhao Feng on the line.

Ugh, good evening Captain Lin,
the voice on the other end spoke up. Lin never really liked being addressed by his rank, even though he had been in the military since he first crossed over into this multi-verse. Even weirder was Deputy Director Zhao referring to him by rank, seeing as how the man – seventy-three-years-old with the rank of Brigadier General and built like a golilath – outranked him and outweighed him. Yet Lin was the good soldier, and he smiled to a non-existent camera.

”Director Zhao, good to hear from you. I trust all is well with the family…”

No real time for chatting, Captain. Just wanting to touch base with you since our last meeting right after the Lopinka Release had to be postponed.

“Of course, sir,”
Lin stuttered, focusing on the road before him. The ‘Lopinka Release’ referred to the most recent official release of the Atlantian Oceania map, which had shown many in the Avatarian Cartographical Community just how ‘inept’ they were: Ever since the Foxchester Declaration, the region’s boundaries had been thrown so far off balance that attempting to make heads-or-tails of any information was just not possible without the official word from the ‘Cartographic Diplomat’ based in Lopinka. Now, with a concrete map to go off of, many wanted to spread the ‘butter’ on a bit more of the bread, as Lin often said. ”Just not sure what we could be talking about here instead of in the meeting tomorrow…”

I want you tonight to get ahold of an old colleague of yours. Doctor Shercru Li at em-utes,
Feng’s voice faded, likely turning away from the microphone for some reason. Doctor Shercru? What does she have to do with maps? Lin thought, changing lanes to avoid a much-larger and much-slower tanker that had made the far left lane their cruising spot for the next fifty miles. Some of the other heads and I… we have an idea that we want to bounce off her.

“Why not contact her yourself sir?”
Lin asked, with a bit more sass than he wanted to inflict. ”She’s on the government roll… a quick phone call…”

Would be impersonal and unlikely to enamor her into coming all the way from her research station in Norg Bral.
The irritation in Zhao’s voice only further drove Lin to want this call to end. Why contact Shercru? What does temporal research have to do with this issue… Lin thought as he looked to his phone. He had already started typing a text to Shercru, hoping to nab her before she fell asleep. Her job at em-utes – The Institute of Multi-Verse and Temporal Studies – was not exactly in the know by most of the population, and certainly she would have given a care less than zero about ‘expanding borders and…’

Wait…

As if a light bulb just turned on, Lin immediately knew what the Deputy Director was aiming for with this conversation. He looked away from the road and right to his phone. A quick couple clicks and he began speeding up to try and get home sooner.

She never slept back when we were at the Institute. She doesn’t sleep now…

As he put the phone on the passenger seat, Lin gave a deep breath and returned to the conversation with the Deputy Director. And all the while the pompous airbeg of Zhao continued to defloar, Lin kept glancing back at the check.

If we’re gonna do what I think we’re gonna do… Oh my stars and bentuu, Lin winced slightly at the thought of what the Director might be suggesting. He knew some of his old friend’s research, and he knew that was exactly where Zhao was going.

I wonder if it will work…

georgia on my mind
a one-shot set in the defender meets midfielder universe

Kingsbury, Georgia
One year before the events of Season One, Part One: A Day In Kven

"We're here, miss. You sure this is your destination?" The taxi driver glances at the rearview mirror, casting a glance at the back seat where I am. It's a gesture of concern; what would a seventeen year-old like me be doing in such a run-down area of Kingsbury like this? It's tough to understand, especially since I'm travelling alone, and with quite a bit of baggage; but I nod determinedly at him, passing over a wad of crumpled notes that I'm pretty sure accounts for the taxi fare.

"Well. Least I can do for you is to help you unpack your stuff, Miss," he says after returning my change. "Would be mighty rude of me to just leave you like that in a place like this."

I nod again, and together we unload the taxi and put my things onto the pavement. Three suitcases worth of items. It's not much — especially for me — but I had to leave, quickly, in the middle of the night, and this is all I really deemed necessary. Clothes, boots, shin-guard, some personal effects but not too many...that's all I'm going to get as I begin this new life. He heaves the last grey suitcase out of the boot, and bids me farewell after I assure him that I'm safe and doing this of my own free will. I watch as the taxi begins, sputtering along the grey street, before it disappears out of my sight; then I realise what I've just done, and where I am.

I'm alone. As a seventeen year-old.

On a pavement of the Docklands district of Kingsbury.

I can see the gleaming steel towers in the distance, marking the Kingsbury skyline — one of them belonging to my dad's company, of course, but nobody has to know about that — but this is the first time I've actually been in the areas of Kingsbury outside the bit that most people like to visit. The smell of the sea is strong, and so is the smell of...raw fish? Meanwhile, the low-rise, three-story apartment blocks that dominate the street are all in varying shades of brown brick and disrepair. If I could choose anywhere in Kingsbury to live, of course, this would be nowhere near the top of the list; but as it stands, rent's cheap (for this city, at least) and this place offers anonymity — nobody will think that I've moved here. And that's important. I'd been looking at this spot to rent for a long time, since I'd thought the concept up of running away to pursue my dreams, but nobody who's searching for me will think that I'm moving here. Of course, to assume that I'll remain anonymous forever is daft — he'll find out where I am eventually, and he'll try to convince me to go back, of course — but all I need is a little bit of time to disappear, hope he comes to terms with the fact that I won't be returning, and then hopefully we'll go forwards from there.

Clutching the letter of confirmation I received the night before leaving, and double-checking that the address is correct — I don't want to knock on the wrong door, and be exposed to whatever might be inside — I step forward, gingerly, and knock on the door. Number 70, Crawford Street; I can feel the sun beating down on me, a bead of sweat running down the left side of my face as I wait for someone to answer the door.

Nobody comes.

I knock again, and wait; perhaps nobody's at home. My heart begins to beat quicker. Maybe this wasn't worth it, maybe it's not too late to go back and admit to Dad that I was wrong to run —

Oh. There's a door-bell with a sign that says to ring, not to knock. That'll explain it. I lightly tap the buzzer, and the sound it makes can be heard even from outside the house; but at least I know this one's worked at getting the attention of whomever's inside, because a few minutes later I hear the thumping of footsteps on the ground. Slowly, the door creaks open; and I find myself looking at an older woman with her greying hair stuffed inside curlers; who's evidently shocked to see me.

"And who might you be?" she asks, making my heart sink.

"Truth be told, dearie, I didn't expect you to turn up so quickly," she says, sipping on a cup of tea. "After all, I did only send that letter out a few days ago. Not to mention there were a few more steps before we, well, actually complete the transaction."

"Well..." All the correspondence went to Walter's post-box in town. The butler's been helping me throughout this whole adventure, including concealing who I really was from the woman sitting opposite me right now. Once again, I silently thank him for offering to do what he's done. "I couldn't really wait, Mrs Jones," I say. I take a sip from my own cup of tea to deflect questions; or, if she at least asks me mid-sip, I can at least think of what to say. "That's okay, right? I can still move in?" I ask, trying to not let my fear of being kicked out overwhelm me.

"Yes, it's fine. I just needed a bit of time to spruce the apartment up, though from your speed of arrival I think you having a roof over your head might outweight that." She laughs at her own joke. "I hope the trip down wasn't too hard?"

"No," I lie, trying to ignore the sense of gradually returning anxiety that I'd been trying to ignore for my entire trip. Even when I'd gotten on the train, and finally have it pull out of Steppenham Station, I couldn't ignore the sense of dread that I'd be caught, sent back home, and my entire plan scuppered. I take another sip to ground myself. I'm here! I'm actually here, ready to start my new life, as a footballer, away from my family. I exhale.

"You know, not a lot of people move out at the age of seventeen," the landlady says, thumbing our tenancy agreement. "Not many people would move here, either. I'd had this listing open for a long time, but nobody really wanted to move in. Not sure why the government suddenly decided to make seventeen the minimum age to rent a property, either," she says. Deep down, however, I reflect at just how much had to go right for me to be sitting here, right now. The legal age to rent decreasing. This particular property being available to rent for the longest time, and for the relatively cheap price it was, too. Walter helping me with all this.

"Well, the rent was a big plus," I say, trying to sound casual and not at all like I'm actually from a really rich family. "I'm planning to work, too."

"You! Work? At the age of seventeen? Oh, dearie, is your family okay?" She holds her hands to her cheek, shocked at the suggestion.

"Yes," I lie again. "Well, they've recently fallen on hard times, and I decided to move to the city to try and make some money." Okay, that last bit's technically not a lie. I do need money to survive. My family, though, they'll be fine. They're only the second richest family in Tumbra, after all.

"Oh, you poor dear," she says. "Do let me know if you're not going to be able to pay rent."

"I, uh, don't think that'll be needed..." For a moment I'm tempted to say yes, that I do need help with rent. After all, how much does Kingsbury pay its players? Not a lot, probably. It's enough. But I've lied enough already, and I kind of feel bad for lying when it comes to money. "I'll be on time every month, hopefully."

"Oh. Well, I'm glad you're here, safe and sound. Do you want me to get the neighbours to..."

"No, I'll just — I'll bring the stuff up by myself," I smile.

Ten minutes later, I'm regretting my decision not to ask for help. I'm panting, wheezing, and I've only moved all my stuff up one flight of stairs. Given that I'm actually staying on the third floor, I'm not looking forward to the rest of my venture. As I look at the next creaky set of stairs in the narrow corridor, I hear a door opening behind me, before a voice begins to speak.

"You, ah, need help there?" says the voice.

I turn around and find myself staring into the eyes someone who's of a similar age as me. He smiles warmly, and makes his way to my luggage. I'm too tired by now to refuse the help; plus, the sooner I can get to my room, the quicker.

"Yeah," I wheeze, in between breaths. "Sure."

"All right! You that new girl that Mrs. Jones was talking about? She mentioned you. Seemed pretty pleased that someone was finally moving in."

All I can muster up, as I grab one suitcase — he's grabbed two, and is moving up the stairs without much effort, the creaks from the stairs making it sound more dangerous than it is — is a tired, flustered "Yeah."

"Cool. Cool, cool, cool," he says as we round another flight of stairs. "I'm Paul. Been living here since I was eight. My mom, you see, she works at the local fish market. So she needed somewhere close to stay."

"Neat," I say. Why's he suddenly telling me his entire life story? We met thirty seconds ago.

"What about you? You're moving in alone. Where's your family stay?"

"Uh, I —" My mind freezes. I haven't fully committed the story I came up with before I left home to memory yet. Uh. Ah. Yeah. "S-Steppenham," I say. "My dad works as...a postal worker. My mom used to work as a nanny, but she got laid off recently." I remind myself that I'm technically not lying. Dad does work as a postal worker; he sits on the board of Georgia Post. And a lot of other boards. But in this new life, I'm going to have to lie a lot. I cringe on the inside, knowing that these people will probably never ever find out the truth of who I am; but that's got to be locked away, now. For how long?

Maybe forever.

"Well, pretty bold of you to come down to the big city to try and find work."

"Not many jobs left in that part of the state. Plus I got offered a job. So, all I needed was to find a place. And..." I heave the final suitcase up to my door. "And here I am, I guess."

He flashes a smile at me. "What's your name? Never did ask for it. Rude of me."

"Trudy." It's the first unequivocally true thing I've told anyone today. Somehow it's refreshing, and his smile's making me feel at ease. I smile back at him.

"Well, Trudy, it's good to meet you," he grins. "If you ever need me — or my mom — don't hesitate to shout. We're all neighbours, and we're all helping each other. Even Fraser, the old man on the second floor. He doesn't take lightly to new arrivals, but he'll warm up to you in no time."

"Thanks."

"I'll be going, then," he says before he walks down the creaky staircases again.

I haven't unpacked much; only what I really need to survive the first night. There's a bed, there's a mattress; and really, that's all I needed. The rest of the room's a bit bare, but that can wait. After putting the covers on, I collapse into it; just enough to be able to see the night sky, and the moon, which is unusually bright tonight, is shining through my window.

It's been a long, long day. And I'm actually here. All that I've dreamed about — well, maybe not everything, but close to it — is actually here. I'm not at home anymore. I'm on the road to actually becoming a footballer. I don't know what's going on at home, and I don't know how they're dealing with my absence; but I sure hope Grandma isn't too heartbroken by the fact that I disappeared without saying goodbye to her. That's the one regret I've got.

Oh well. If it's just one regret, it can't be too bad. And I'm sure she'd understand. But I can't let things like that distract me from what I've got to do.

My name is Trudy Harrison, and I'm going to become a professional footballer.

No matter what it takes.

"10 seconds left in stoppage time... And it seems like right now it's certain for the Inklings here tonight. Pack your bags everyone! WE'RE GOING BACK TO THE WORLD CUP!!!"

Takanaki Osa's call of the conclusion of the final game of World Cup qualification for Squidroidia was the sound to a backdrop of bodies all rushing onto the pitch together. The entire Squidroidian national team was together to celebrate not just a shot at qualification, but automatic qualification. No worrying about a 2 legged playoff, no trips to the Cup of Harmony... Squidroidia were one of 20 teams who, along with the host nations of Vilita and Baker Park, have punched their ticket to football's greatest spectacle. They would join favorites like Audioslavia and The Holy Empire as well as shocks like Adab and Jeruselem in the show. The most notable absence of them all? Starblaydia. Yes, Starblaydia. For the 2nd time in 2 cycles, a 5 time champion will miss out on the World Cup and will have to settle with the Cup of Harmony. But that was something for another time and another tournament. For now, it was about joining in on the celebrations of another qualification cycle done, and one that bore more than the fruits of their labor.

Every one of those players were in on the festivities, even Adam Johnson, secure in the knowledge that he was going to stay on as Squidroidian manager for at least the next cycle. That's not including the fact that most of them were free agents due to Squidroidian football's reshuffling and needed to train for the national team above all else. To most of them, they were just national team players, not contracted to a club domestically or internationally, and had to take whatever chance they could to train for national team matches. Such a workload would only be taken on by a few players at most for a national team, and even then it would be for those at the bottom of the rankings. Squidroidia were a top 20 team and a majority of their players weren't contracted to a club, some even on the brink of retirement. Such things rarely even happen nowadays, with the exception of The Holy Empire, perennial World Cup favorites.

After the champagne was popped and the team celebrated once more, however, it was time for the post-game conferences. A lot was said by Adam regarding this win. He called the tight 3-2 victory a show of Kohnhead's strengths in big matches. "They knew they wanted to qualify for the World Cup too, so they came at us at full force. It was essentially a match of attrition and who wanted it more, turns out we did want it more and guess what? WORLD CUP BABY!" The yell from Johnson's mouth was joined in by his Squidroidian team, who rushed over and swarmed the manager, some shooting water up at Johnson. When all the commotion ended, it was back to the normal press conference questions. Regarding how far Squidroidia were going to go, he said: "I want to say the knockouts but I'm not really that sure if that's the farthest we can go. If anything this team has the ability to go far, maybe even the Semi-Finals if they're good enough. But we'll see about that when we touch down in Vilita or Baker Park." Considering last cycle when Johnson guided them to the Quarter-Finals, anything was really possible.

Then along stepped Takemoto Shingen, goalkeeper and team captain. This press conference was expected when it came to the club captain, but he didn't really wanna talk about the game just gone, even if he conceded 2 goals against a good Kohnhead attack. He was 37 years old and it felt like his career was nearing the end of the road. It just needed a little confirmation.

"I'm here to announce that I will retire at the end of World Cup 90, not just from international football, but the domestic game as well. I've told Johnson about my decision and he's okay with it. I want to be with my family more than anything, and even with Real Squidroid letting me go I feel like I don't have a lot more time to care about those I truly love. This will also mean that I won't be signing with any Super League team. I want to end my career at the summit of international football, and to be honest, I want to lift the World Cup when it's all over. I understand if I'm not able to, however."

With that, he promptly left, not asking any more questions to the media. He made up his mind, and the World Cup would be his final tournament, even if he wins football's biggest prize. It would be certain that Kaede Akiyama would take the reigns as Squidroidia's number 1 for the foreseeable future, but it was a future too far ahead to discuss. Either way, this was the end of the road for Squidroidia's captain.

But it surely wasn't the end of the road for Squidroidia the national team. Now they just had to wait for all the other teams to join the party.

RQFA President Michelle Glauber-Shin dies by suicide, age 55

Bob Devers-Shin

RENEEGRAD, CAPITALE-NATIONALE - QUEBEC CITY - Michelle Glauber-Shin, the Royal Quebecois Football Association President of last six years, committed suicide yesterday, weeks after being recalled on extensive, weeks-long hearings over the nightmarish second half form of the I.A. Quebec national team's qualification campaign for the World Cup 90, authorities said.

'Our office has been notified that the body of Michelle Glauber-Shin has been found on the RQFA headquarter grounds in the city of Reneegrad after committing suicide,' Royal Quebecois Police Attorney General Filbert Nadon announced in a press statement. 'It was a tragic matter for all those concerned, and we'd like to remain silent to pay respect to the victims.'

Glauber-Shin, the coaches and all members of the federation dismissed on the halftime of the I.A. Quebec's 2-3 loss to Indusse at Marijuana Island Gaol, were supposed to be recalled to the RQFA Headquarters at The Reneegrad Complex, where they were expected to pack their belongings and vacate their respective offices. Her body was found at a press box in the recently-rebuilt The Reneegrad, the Quebecois national team's stadium intended to be reopened for World Cup 91 qualifying campaign, according to the Royal Quebecois Police.

The Royal Quebecois Football Association declined to comment on Glauber-Shin's death, and have also stayed out of commenting on the suicides of Grim Reapers' assistant coach Sean Piugattuk, and RQFA Senior Program director Wang Ok-Ja following the end of Grim Reapers' campaign. The loss sealed the historic worst qualifying campaign for the Grim Reapers in 50 years, ended the Fabrizio Kaal era in charge of the Grim Reapers with a second-half record of 1-4-3, including shameful losses to Pekoland and Indusse, a draw to New Zhengguo, and back to back draws to Natanians and Nosts.

Dirk Voordenhout's Frederykvil Apartment, Garifunya

Dirk Voordenhout had just settled in for the night with a book and a glass of wine when a knock came at his door. Odd time for maintenance to come around and fix that leak, he thought, but better late than never. He rose and opened the door, only to find someone he was very much not expecting.

"François?"

"Dirk, my friend, is it possible for me to come in and chat with you briefly?"

"Come in," said Dirk. He gestured towards his couch. "It's a bit spartan, but there is some wine. This is really just a crash pad when the legislature is in session."

François grinned. "I understand completely. Sometimes duty comes before comfort, especially on a Freeholders' salary." He took a seat on the couch.

"Anyway, is this a friendly visit? I heard you've been retired from politics for two years, gardening or something. Wine?" Dirk swished the bottle around.

"No thank you, my friend. And it is true, I have been retired from politics for some time now. But I'm back, on a mission and with a special project only you can help me with."

"Oho, is that right? You know, friend, when you're seducing someone, it's not customary for them to bring their own wine? But I'm interested nonetheless. What brings François Celestin back into politics and knocking at my door at 9 PM?"

François' mouth upturned slightly. "My friend, if we pull this off, I will buy you an entire case of wine. This project I have is right up your alley. The nation is in a rut, you know this. Economic growth has slowed, major projects are few and far between, and the violence is growing every day. The opposition is making hay out of all of this. We need something grand to jump-start the economy, something that will create jobs, and show everyone, including foreign countries, that we mean business. I'm talking about a deal with Banija."

"Banija? They're on the other side of the globe - multiverse - whatever, they're a long way away and incredibly larger than us. What makes you think they would make a deal with a fly speck like us?"

"Dirk, Dirk, you know better than to describe us as a fly speck. Think about our comparative advantages in land and labor. Think about how we are a gateway to the wider world, to new markets for Banija. Plus, they are a black nation like us, and looking for a foreign policy win after the Nyowani Kitara debacle."

Dirk sipped his wine. "Okay, what did you have in mind?"

"You and I go to Busukuma, meet with the Isebantu, that's their prince, who doubles as the Foreign Minister, pitch him our ideas, get wined and dined a little, and come back with the framework of a deal we can announce to the people and that will get our economy up and running again."

"François, this sounds suspiciously like a political plan. Prins is struggling in the polls and Parliament doesn't want to approve any of his initiatives, so he'll do the presidential thing and try to get a foreign policy win. Plus, why are you and I doing it? Shouldn't the Foreign Minister be in charge of a thing like this?"

François nodded his head. "I understand your concerns, but the beauty of this is that there's something here for everyone. Yes, for Immanuel, there's a foreign policy win that will pay off politically. For Garifunya, there are jobs and prosperity in the offing. And for you, there is everything to gain as well. Think about it. If Prins falters in the presidential election, what's the alternative? An illiberal right-winger who will crush dissent or promote racial separatism? An illiberal left-winger who will take the country back to the 50s and land collectivization? You and Immanuel have the same political goals. Peace, racial harmony, and economic growth. Additionally, everyone in Frederykvil knows Foreign Minister van der Mollen is not the tough negotiator we need. Dirk, I know you want his job. Do you want to go through the tough job of convincing a majority of your colleagues to let Immanuel fire him, then two-thirds of the same to let him hire you, or do you want to do something for your country? If we pull this off, I can almost guarantee you'd be Foreign Minister in a Prins second term."

Now it was Dirk's turn to smile. "Well, when you put it that way...what's the next step?"

François handed him a plane ticket. "I've already had some university people and some of my own men at the Foreign Ministry put together an evaluation of our capabilities as well as some preliminary information on Banija. We leave in two days, so get ready. We've arranged for your home office to cover for you while you're away. It's a looong flight, so you'll have plenty of time to catch up on the reading." He rose to leave. "And remember, not a word about this to anyone."

Busukuma, Banija

After indeed a very long flight, involving more connections than is necessary to go into here, François and Dirk arrived in Busukuma. When they had picked up their luggage, a car was waiting to take them from the airport. They marveled at the sights of Busukuma, whose expanse could have held four times or more of the entire population of Garifunya. When they arrived at the palace, they were escorted to an antechamber, made to wait for several minutes, and then brought in to meet the Isebantu Mutungi. A normally hale and hearty man, he seemed weighed down as he watched them enter the room.

"Your Highness," François said, and bowed deeply, like a man who has spent much of his life rigorously observing protocol.

Dirk did likewise, though his business instincts wanted him to get as close as he could and shake hands.

"Mr. Celestin, Mr. Voordenhout, I was advised of your coming," said the Banijan royal. "May I say what a pleasure it is to meet you both. Would you like a drink? We do not partake of caffeine or alcohol here, but we do have water and a selection of fruit juices. Or perhaps you'd like to sample some Banijan soft drinks?"

"Just water, Your Highness," said François. "And may we return the greeting. It is our undoubtable pleasure to be in your august presence and to be granted this audience."

Dirk frowned at this. He knew François was a stickler for the niceties, but this felt obsequious. "Just water for me as well. We are very grateful to you for taking this meeting."

François took the lead. "Your Highness, as you know, our nation of Garifunya is not a grand and mighty nation such as Banija. But we are both proud Black nations who aspire to ever greater heights. We have come to present you with a mutually beneficial proposition for co-operation between Banija and Garifunya." He fiddled with the computer setup to bring up the presentation.

The Isebantu nodded. "Yes, gentlemen. But tell me, why should we invest in Garifunya? It is a small nation, with a GDP barely comparable to our own and whose size does not seem to offer much opportunity for development. It seems more an aid candidate than an investment opportunity."

Here Dirk spoke up. "Your Highness, that's exactly the perception we want to avoid. We forwarded your aides a copy of our presentation, if you would like to follow along." He took a sip of water. "It's true Garifunya is a small nation, but its potential is enormous. First, consider the exchange rate. One Banijan shilling is worth many of our giyldaars, which means comparatively less money buys comparatively more goods and services. This is true for both land and labor. One of the curses of our economy is that we have a number of large landowners who practice relatively little economic activity on much of their land. For the right price, which would not be much to you, Banijan companies could have a lot of land. Similarly, our minimum wage is equal to only about 1 NSD per hour, much cheaper than labor in Banija or even in other developing countries."

He paused to display an image on the screen. "The economic 'flying goose theorem' states that capital is more mobile than labor and will thus move to progressively cheaper labor markets, so that jobs that began in say, Eura, move to cheaper and cheaper environments until they get to countries like Garifunya. We are at the end of the V, representing one of the cheapest labor markets in the world. There are many workers who could provide Banijan firms with cost advantages."

François then took over. "Your Highness, the second prong of this advantage represents Garifunya as a market and as a gateway. As a market, we are willing to contract with PetroBan for 700,000 barrels of oil per year and to grant PetroBan exclusive drilling rights to look for even more oil. As a gateway, we represent an area that is on the whole other side of the multiverse, with trillions of NSD being disposed of annually. Even a small fraction of that market would be an enormous windfall for Banijan industry."

Seeing the Isebantu's face beginning to soften and even seem a little less weary, Dirk then leapt up from his seat. "But there's more! Excuse me - I mean, there's more, Your Highness. Garifunya has resources in terms of sand and timber to export, and we happen to know that our products of yams, cassava, and bananas would have a substantial market here in Banija. It's not just what you can give to us, but what we can give to you. And, Your Highness, so often international relations can have an outsized effect on domestic perceptions. After Nyowani Kitara, we are certain Banija could use some unabashedly good news. We ourselves are dealing with our own crises. Let us use an agreement to not only usher in a new era of co-operation between Black nations, but also to inspire our people and give them hope in a time of trouble."

The Isebantu gave no indication of his rejection or approval, instead asking, "Do you have concrete terms to discuss?"

François took a paper out of his briefcase. "Yes, Your Highness. I think you will find this an attractive offer." He passed it over to the Banijan royal.

Garifunyan Offer

  • A trade agreement conducted on the least restrictive terms possible
  • The purchase of 700,000 barrels of oil annually by Garifunya and the leasing of drilling rights off of Garifunya to PetroBan, with an subsequent profits divided 2/1 between PetroBan and the Garifunyan government.
  • Infrastructure investment by the Regional Transit Corporation in Garifunyan light rail, and by private companies or the Banijan government in Garifunyan ports.
  • The loan of technical advisors and engineers to consult with the Garifunyan government on potential infrastructure projects undertaken by said government.
  • The investment of NSD 100,000,000 in private and public Banijan capital over 10 years, with no less than NSD 15,000,000 to be invested in the first year of this period.
  • 75% of all jobs created by Banijan investment to go to Garifunyan nationals, and the setting aside of quotas of manufactured products produced to be available for purchase at a subsidized rate by Garifunyan nationals.
  • Full government co-operation in the purchase of land for Banijan investment, whether for agricultural, manufacturing, or infrastructure purposes, and tax incentives for private capital.

Corrupt Dictatorship

Note: This government owned media source is the most biased media sources in the entire country, so read this media source, especially the other news section, with a critical eye. Foreign media observers would call it a KPWC propaganda outlet, a charge that they would most certainly deny. They routinely charge the Free Press with straight up fabrications, something the newspaper rigorously denies. With recent legalization of opposition outlets within the country, its reach will inevitably decline, but in response it is doubling down on its loyalty to the President, and particularly, the party. Obviously, everything is strictly IC

Note 2: Furthermore, I have permission from Chrom for the violent moment in the RP.

Owino Odede, a starting striker for Nyowani Kitara, in the 80th minute

This game between Nyowani Kitara and Chromatika was reaching a fevered pitch, at this moment. There were plenty of tensions due to Chromatika's stance against the winning party of the civil war, the KPWC, who were firmly in control of the national team. Four starters had defected from the national team during peace talks, but despite that, the Kitarans were still in a place where they controlled their own destiny. It made for a complicated time to be representing your country on the pitch. While some players spoke out and left the team, many more who didn't exactly support the government stayed silent. Okombo, who was their captain, and Angonga, who was their leading goalscorer, were emphatic supporters of Nafuna Akongo. Not to mention, their manager, Liang Wei, was an even bigger supporter.

Odede, if you could promise him absolutely 0 consequences, would have told you that he's a supporter of the KFF. But the time to come out as a KFF supporter had long past- and he hadn't told a soul since the civil war started who he supported. Not even his wife. He told her that he wanted to simply keep his head down and focus on his football, and that's exactly what he was doing. But his strike partner, Angonga, was doing the opposite. A rabble rouser and an emphatic supporter of the KPWC, Angonga would talk her and her government up almost any chance he got. It made him annoying to some opponents- but in this game, it was always going to raise the tensions up to an 11.

It was hard. The tensions were already high, with the amount of stakes in the outcome of this match for both Nyowani Kitara and Chromatika. Angonga was getting into verbal arguments with a number of players on Chromatika's team. Odede Angonga, specifically, had been exchanging words with Enigma Armageddon all game long. Words, and had even given him a hard foul himself. A tough sliding challenge from Angonga on Armaggedon in the 72nd minute had led to the players having to be broken up, and Angonga being shown a yellow card. Words continued to be exchanged, increasingly consisting only of expletives. In the 80th minute, Owino Odede had taken a shot on goal from the 18, and skied it particularly high. Fillar didn't even really have to move- it was one of those shots where, if there was a goal on top of the goal, it still would have been too high.

Desperation time, eh? Owino Odede stayed by the 18 in case the keeper tried to keep it in the box, so he could challenge. But Fillar sent his charges long. Owino Odede caught what Angonga said to Enigma Armaggadeon as they jogged up the field. "Your country." Angonga was saying. "Chromatika is an absolute disgrace. Harboring traitors like Sundin and Ayange? Terrible country." Armaggedon gave him a small shove, but Owino Odede thought nothing of it. Just regular smack talk among opponents, right?

Wrong. Fillar went long with the goal kick, and Angonga tried to position himself against Haley Hauser to chest the ball down. But Armaggedon, apparently fed up with Angonga, came flying in. Right foot high, reaching towards the ball- but did not reach any of the ball, and instead hit Angonga straight in the head. Angonga went down like a Jenga tower, and the referee blew his whistle. Players sprinted over from both sides, and Owino Odede was the first to arrive. "Hey man." He said, running straight to Armaggedon, who had just gotten up after his high challenge. He gave him a hard shove. "What the f$*@ is wrong with you." Owino Odede said. Armaggedon came straight back at Odede, and it looked like the two would come to blows- before teammates stepped in on both sides, setting the two apart.

Owino Odede and Armaggedon were jawing at each other. Angonga was on the ground, knocked out. Armaggedon was shown a straight red- the referee had a clear view of the play, and there was no need to even consult VAR. The trash-talking Angonga was out of the game, and Odede knew that the pressure on him would only go up as they would continue to chase a potential match-winning and playoff-clinching goal.

Kitarans celebrate Owino Odede's match winner in the first minute of stoppage time

TIHON, URRHED ISLAND, CHROMATIKA- Absolutely stunning. Everybody knew the stakes going in. "This match is a huge match for both teams- one of us will be eliminated after today, and the other will become surely alive, prepared to play in the World Cup Qualification playoffs." Liang Wei said the morning of the match. "There's no getting around that- this match has massive stakes. It is more than just a match- it is a culmination of what both teams have worked so hard to achieve. Win or go home. It literally doesn't get better than this. This is why association football is, and will always remain, the greatest sport on Earth. There is absolutely nothing like the depth and drama behind a big match like this. It is going to have the energy of a Cup Final. Obviously, Nyowani Kitara is quite new this. Four Copa Rushmori appearances, but just our second ever appearance in World Cup Qualifying. The biggest match we've ever played in? Most certainly.

Of course, Chromatika gave the match a political backdrop that raised the stakes even more. They wanted to show the world that they stood firmly in favor of suits and big business, and against a government that is, by, of, and for the workers. Keri Wyse Aart herself came to The Tidal Wave, in the VIP booth. Ergo, they invited as a guest of honor a monarchist, Dr. Kekoto Mansaré, who is Banija's Ambassador to Chromatika. Their Premier came herself, and they brought along two traitors to this team and our country- Arendt Sundin and Omollo Ayange, as guests of honor as well. A Foreign Ministry spokesperson talked about it before the match. "The political stakes, of course, were raised when they brought symbols of the losing side of a civil war to the match. If Ayange and Sundin do not want to play for the national team, that is their prerogative. Nobody makes them. But these men coming, solely to serve as a distraction to their own country- a shame and an absolute disgrace."

All the tensions were there when a packed house boomed the Chromatik national anthem before kickoff, after hearing the Kitaran anthem. Two will enter, one will leave. And when the match kicked off, it would be the Chromatiks who would have the early advantage. VMK almost scored a goal just 44 seconds into the game, testing Odour Bigombe early. Fortunately, our goalkeeper was ready, as he made a diving save in the extremely early stages of a match. It's always good to test a goalkeeper in the early stages of the match- they have to settle into a game, and sometimes their reflexes are not quite there yet. But Bigombe was ready, as the 1896 Ebor player pushed the ball out for a corner kick for a diving save. The Anomalies would dominate the early going of the match, creating a lot of chances and putting our defense on their back heels. Defending is not our strength- it never has been.

For the first 25 minutes, while we broke forward on the counter-attack a few times, we were never really a serious threat of scoring. Juxon Fillar made a couple of incredibly easy saves, never seriously getting tested. Meanwhile, Bigombe was seemingly under siege. He had a leaping save on a header in the 12th minute from Keira Anbient, and then another diving save in the 18th minute. Hell, VMK set up Olimpia Vidal for what should have been the game's opening goal, but he hit the post in the 21st minute. But just four minutes later, the home team would finally open the scoring. The teenager, Edith Fillar, was having a hell of a time on the left wing. She simply blew by Jekuche Jokonya and was able to whip in a cross, that Vidal was able to turn into the net with his head. Bigombe was able to save it, but couldn't control the rebound. He hit the ball high into the air, and Haley Hauser came under it, sliding and smashing a volley into the back of the net. A brilliant finish for the talented attacking midfielder, who had given her team a 1-0 lead.

Of course, this team does not fear trailing. "Embrace who you are." Liang Wei consistently preaches. And embracing who we are, means getting out on the front foot and going forward. Sometimes, it can be disastrous. Remember we conceded 6 goals to Chromatika in the first half of Qualifying, as well as Taksylvania, both resulting in home losses? The team was seemingly in flux, with players seemingly dropping out after every window, and it was difficult. But once the roster was able to stabilize, we were able to really build ourselves in attack. We kept our composure, and starting putting pressure on their back 4. A long range shot from Salem Lagum in the 33rd minute put Juxon Fillar at full stretch. We were making the correct runs, pulling defenders apart and hitting the spaces. We had a chance in the 38th minute that saw Angonga in on goal, but a perfectly timed sliding challenge in the box by Henri de Aea took the ball off of his feet just before he could strike home.

It would be a couple of minutes before Nyowani Kitara would equalize. 44th minute, we won a free kick, probably around 30 yards from goal, but no angle to whip in a cross. A tough free kick, right? Give credit to Liang Wei's creativity here. Angonga lined up to take the free kick. While everyone else went to the wall 10 yards back, Salem Lagum stood directly in front of the ball, with his back to the goal. Angonga ran up to take the kick, then stopped directly in front of the ball. Lagum tapped the ball to his right, a straight pass, and none other than Nicholas Ekdahl sprinted up to hit the ball first time. He hit it perfectly first time- putting the ball upper 90. A diving Juxon Fillar did not stand a chance, as Ekdahl celebrated his stunning equalizer. Going into the break at 1-1, rather than down 1-0, changed the complexion of the game. "They don't have to chase two goals in the second half- the pressure can build so fast there." Said one of the announcers. "We only had to chase one, which means that we could stick to the gameplan."

It wouldn't be long before the team would take the lead. Come out like gangbusters scoring on each side of halftime? Why not? It would be Angonga himself who would score the go-ahead goal. The Kitarans were getting forward with numbers, and Ramah Abong'o had both Odede and Angonga running with him. A pass to Odede, who quick hit a diagonal through ball to Angonga. Angona had a step on de Aea, and this time, too far ahead of Chromatika's star defender for a sliding challenge to stop him. Angonga took one step and hit the ball with power, back across the face of goal and finding the lower bottom corner. He was celebrating wildy as the 49th minute goal gave our squad a 2-1 lead, and for the first time on the night, we were in position to reach the World Cup Qualification Playoffs. But holding a lead for 40 minutes? Against a team with their talent level? Unlikely.

Wen Xhose would be the man who would equalize for Chromatika. A great ball from VMK went over the top of the defense, and had Wen sprinting forward down the sideline. He was able to beat our captain, Okombo, on the dribble, and head towards goal. When he reached the side edge of the 18, he hit the ball towards the center and Baillaire Fillar was there. Fillar played it back to Wen first time. They had the defense scrambling in their own box, and Wen was wide open. He hit the ball first time on the ground, and Bigombe didn't stand a chance from that distance, as there was no way he could get down quickly enough. A brilliant goal- a bit of one touch and highly skilled football from the home team. The score was 2-2, in the 63rd minute. Anybody's ball game.

We kept pushing forward, trying to score. At that goal, Nicholas Ekdahl came out of the game, and Lothar Markolf came into the game. A few minutes after that, Mhara Vera came into the game for Abong'o. We're pushing forward, trying to chase that last goal. And then, in the 80th minute, another stunning moment. A bouncing ball on a goal kick leads to Enigma Armageddon going for the ball with his foot, as Angonga tried to head the ball. Angonga tried to head it- but instead, he took a foot directly to the skull. He was out. It almost devolved into a full fight. Odede shoved Armageddon, and VMK shoved another Kitaran player. It might have devolved entirely if it was not for the referees getting a quick handle on things. Angonga was taken off the pitch on a stretcher, while Chromatika's captain was shown a straight red card. You can't have your foot go into somebody's head, with your foot that high in the air, and not get a red card. Lars Ander came into the game for Angonga.

With Chromatika down to 10 men, it was pretty much guaranteed we'd dominate possession for the rest of the match. But could we do it? We peppered Juxon Fillar, but he continued to make saves. Their defense was packing it in, and they were trying to possess the ball as well. They only showed five minutes of stoppage time- an amount the Kitarans would say was far too short, considering Armaggedon's foot to Angonga's head. But not shortly after that was given- well, we'll let our radio announcers tell you what happened next.

What a goal, and what scenes. Nearly half the time ended up in the visitors section of the crowd. All sorts of yellow cards shown. And then, we had to defend desperately. The extra man was probably the difference for Nyowani Kitara. Having an extra player in defense made it extremely hard for Chromatika to work their way through us, even though our defense isn't exactly known for its stoutness. When the final whistle was blown, over 8 minutes into stoppage time(even though he had given 5!), the scenes were incredible. Liang Wei took a Gatorade bath. Players were hugging each other, and dancing on the pitch with a flag. "A great moment for us." Okombo said after the match. "Probably the biggest moment in national team history. We've been good enough to make the playoffs. Now- two more games to get into the World Cup itself."

And that last part of the mountain will be hard to climb. 14th ranked Ethane will be our opponents in the playoffs. We are ranked 85th- a difference of 71 spots in the rankings. But how much do rankings count for? We finished ahead of both Sargossa and Chromatika in this table. And one more thing we'll have going for us. While Angonga will miss the first leg due to a concussion, we will play the first leg on home soil- the first home game not in Tikariot of the entire Qualification cycle. It's going to be one hell of a home crowd that night in Dewayo, now won't it?

Other News
- The President herself has announced she will be at the match in Dewayo between Nyowani Kitara and Ethane, for the first leg of the World Cup Qualification Playoffs.

Nafuna Akongo announces plans to travel to Inhalo for the first time during her Presidency, to celebrate the 're-unification' of Nyowani Kitara. Despite the presence of United Republics peacekeeping troops in the city, she will not engage with them.
- Liang Wei, the national team's manager and the interim Executive Chairman of the KWFA, has been declared the permanent Chairman of the KWFA. "There is no better man for the role." Said President Akongo. The KWFA board is controlled by the Kitara Progressive Worker's Coalition, and the President, in her role as head of the party, gets to appoint the Board and the Chairman.

While the main drama on the pitch for the Sarzonian national football team was drawing to a close as Sarzonia closed out its World Cup 90 qualifying schedule with a 2-0 victory over Magnecia in front of 97,832 fans at Dave Wilson Stadium in Woodstock, manager Nathan Hanifer was about to face a different kind of drama.

Sure, he was about to sit down with national team technical director Chris Parsons for a candid evaluation of his performance and the team's. That would take place prior to potentially his sit-downs with the players and assistant managers. If Parsons and the Incorporated Football Federation Board of Governors opted to go in a different direction for their on-field manager, it wouldn't make much sense for Hanifer to do the evaluations. If, however, Parsons got the blessing of the Board to keep Hanifer as manager, it would make perfect sense for him to evaluate the team's did-wells and opportunities for growth.

Hanifer didn't have a role to play in the upcoming drama that would in part decide whether the Stars would accept an invitation to the Cup of Harmony in the event that one was offered. He wouldn't want to be in that room as he hated that sort of drama.

Sarzonia had entered the second half of World Cup qualifying with a 3-0-4 record and an even goal differential, having both scored and conceded 19 goals. The offence ranked the Stars third in Group 18 for most goals scored, but the 19 goals coughed up were level with bottom-of-table Dod Rava for worst among the eight teams. Parsons made a point to address the defence with Hanifer, going so far as to intimate that his job would be on the line if the Stars didn't tighten up its defensive numbers. However, Parsons and the IFF didn't count on a second half that saw the Stars go 5-1-1 with only a 2-1 defeat to playoff-bound Mytanija and a 1-1 draw against Eastfield Lodge at Dave Wilson Stadium. Yes, the results also included a shocking 2-1 defeat of world No. 1 and defending World Cup runners up The Holy Empire in what pundits throughout Sarzonia have described as Hanifer's signature victory.

In the final seven matches of qualifying, the Stars conceded six goals, undergoing a dramatic decrease from an average of 2.71 goals conceded to a second half average of 0.86. The offence slowed down its scoring prowess just a hair, going from the same 2.71 goals per game scored to an average of 2.43 tallies per match. Sarzonia retained its third rank in Group 18 for goals scored, but improved its goals conceded rank to third best. The team finished third among the eight teams, missing out on a spot in the World Cup playoffs by six points and the automatic bid earned by The Holy Empire by eight points. Clearly, even though the second half run wouldn't see them through to the proper, it was still a sign the team was heading in the right direction.

Clearly, Parsons saw that, as he'd received what amounted to a full-throated endorsement from the IFF Board of Governors, as they voted 11-1 to extend Hanifer's contract to manage the squad. The lone dissenting vote came from Board Member Jeffrey Lang, whose antics the next day would cost him his role in the IFF. But after a bit more drama, the Stars would find out they would be on their way either to Montaña Verde or The Licentian Isles for the Cup of Harmony. But where last edition's Cup of Harmony included Banija as a shock top-10 side that missed the proper, this edition would see an invite being extended to Starblaydia as the 10th ranked team in the multiverse failed to advance to the proper despite a 10-1-3 record as they lost a tiebreaker to Tumbra in Group 12 by losing both legs. The Purple Peril, in fact, failed to net a single goal in either of their two matches against Tumbra.

That was a fact that Hanifer and Parsons were both able to laugh about after the brief tension about whether Hanifer would keep his job had been dispelled. Sure, the Stars weren't in, but if Starblaydia were also out, that was a result every Sarzonian could celebrate.

Following that, and following the evaluations Hanifer had with everyone from the equipment managers to each player and assistant manager, he was sitting in his office looking around as he was getting ready to turn off the lights to go home. Just then, he heard the phone ring. Realising his secretary had already left for the evening, he'd originally thought about letting the call go to voice mail. However, for some reason, he felt a need to actually answer this phone. He looked at the caller ID, and he recognised the number as being from the team's medical staff. He answered, "Nathan Hanifer."

"Nathan, it's Dr. Lipscomb," came the reply.

"Oh, hello Dr. Lipscomb. What can I do for you?"

"Got a minute?"

"I was getting ready to go home for the evening. Can you make it quick?"

"Yes," Dr. Lipscomb said, drawing a raised eyebrow from Hanifer as Dr. Lipscomb was sometimes given to deliver protracted medical explanations that often resulted in Hanifer asking his registered nurse son-in-law "what's that mean in English?"

"I just spoke with the training staff. We've done an evaluation on Paolo and he's good to resume playing."

"Say what?"

"The [medical] training staff and I put Mr. Gomes through a battery of tests three days ago. His ACL held up beautifully then and he's shown no signs of aggravating the injury. As far as I'm concerned, he has a clean bill of health."

That now meant Hanifer had a decision to make. Would he keep Trent Woodson as his second choice goalkeeper after he'd made three saves in the clean sheet victory over Magnecia? Or would he return to Gomes to provide some veteran leadership and depth on the substitutes' bench? Or, if he did well enough in training, could Gomes actually push Carlton Sandt for the starting job the way his predecessor Nicola Mentes wanted when he'd been manager?

Hanifer would have some time to think things over. As he wasn't going to be in the room when the IFF Board of Governors would have their meeting, he would have a few days away from the drama and the questions. It would be a time to enjoy the good, ponder the not-so-good, and handle the in-between of everything that happened in this World Cup qualifying campaign.

TK: Abanhfleft 2-1 Kimi Suomi (McGinnis 34', Liner 78'; Airo 90+2')

Flowers delivered to Gil Archer, through the Fleftic FA of course, and the expected L taken, at least Kimi Airo scored our final goal of this Group Stage before the final whistles fell in Group 19.

Hyvin tehty to Audioslavia for, as expected, winning this group on 32 points and also to Hapilopper in 2nd for surviving the battle for the playoffs by a single point. You certainly have a tough test ahead of you in the form of South Newlandia - our mates in the North Pacific tell us of that - but we feel you could do well enough to advance if you don't, in our mate's eyes again, "do a Hapilopper"...whatever that means.

In a group as tough as this, we had to have 6 losers - but they all should be proud of what they did here. Tikariot, Abanhfleft, Zeta Reka and Hugeltaldom, Dispertag and Rhubarbton all played their part in the story of this group and we would like to wish them all the very best in the future no matter what.

As for us, we finish in 6th with 17 points from 9 of our 14 games. Losing only 5 times doesn't actually sound too bad and if we turned a few of those draws into wins, we certainly could've been up there in the battle for 2nd. At least we know we have that potential within us now and you better believe Esko Laaksonen will be trying to build upon that success in the tournaments to come.

Which would come sooner than you'd think. Daniel Marx will be with us one more time as we have an invite to the Cup of Harmony itself in our mailbox now, thanks in part to the collective hangover and catharsis that occurred in the North Pacific area last night. We shall fight again...in a new competition fit for us all. NOSTA KUIN HUUHKAJAT!

Going But Never Forgotten

Blanco Borrayo reports;

The announcement came out today, from the offices of the Football Federation of Sargossa in Soluca. The Sargossan national team and head coach Brian McAllister will part company at the conclusion of his contract in just a few days’ time. The news will not come as a complete surprise, with the Tikariotian unable to replicate the form his charges showed in cup competitions in the longer format World Cup qualification campaigns. A fourth campaign has come and gone with the Corsairs failing to make it to the biggest show in the sportiverse. They topped Group 6 with three games to go and were eliminated from contention entirely after a single point from the next two.

But there was nothing but praise from fans, players, pundits and administrators alike for the outgoing tactician. ‘I’d like to put on record our huge thanks and gratitude to Señor McAllister’, Federation President Hernán Sandoval stated. ‘Although both he and we are disappointed that World Cup results haven’t quite gone our way, but he has certainly written his name large in the sporting history of this nation. And that legacy will live on forever.’ GloboSport pundit and former Sargossan international Alejandro Vecino also praised the coach. ‘His style of play was always pleasing on the eye. And he was never afraid to blood the youngsters. Two things that certainly won over the fanbase. Even when the results didn’t go his way he never lost the support from the stands. That’s a rare achievement.’

The rationale behind the good grace is not hard to locate. The two newest rather large and shiny trophies that sit in pride of place in the very building from which this announcement came. Brian McAllister’s adroit management of cup competitions was there to see right from the outset, when only a late Krytenian goal denied his side a place in the Cup of Harmony final in his very first tournament in charge. But it was in the Copa Rushmori where he really came to the fore.

A point from the opening two games at the 38th edition of the tournament in Mytanija wasn’t a great start but a win in the final group game saw the side scrape into the knockout rounds. From there the Corsairs knocked over Græntfjall, Savojarna and Hispinas, before edging out Cassadaigua in the final to secure a fourth regional title. It was a win that was met with raucous scenes back home. But they paled in comparison when he repeated the feat two years later in Hispinas. An impressive Mytanija side were beaten in the last sixteen and a famous win over Eura followed in the semis. In form Pridnestrovia were the opponents in the final, with many critics pleading with the coach to go defensive. He didn’t. And the Corsairs struck five to take a second successive crown. World Cup qualifying results will fade into the ether of history. But two Copa Rushmori titles will see his name remembered for all time.

Happily the boss’s reign ended on something of a high. A packed house in Goza witnessed a comfortable win over visiting Atlantian nation Geisenfried. It was match number 131 in charge for McAllister, one shy of Rodrigo Defederico’s mark, and his 75th victory. Only the aforementioned Defederico has registered more wins. It’s an outstanding record and one set to be recognised by state president Gregorio Emparán, who will offer the coach honorary Sargossan citizenship in thanks for his contribution to Sargossan sport.

Inevitably speculation now mounts as to who will replace the outgoing Brian McAllister. Assistant coach Miguel Marí has been placed in interim charge but a fulltime replacement is expected to be in place ahead of the next international engagement, when Sargossa attempts to defend its regional title. Marí himself has an outside chance of landing the job. Although his lack of frontline coaching experience may count against him. Ciudad Soluca coach Rubén Rojas is the bookies favourite, having led the capital club to a second successive SuperLiga title. Former international Alejandro Echeverría is another with strong backing, thanks to his Sportivo Soluca side pushing their city rivals all the way in an exciting title race. And Raúl Churín, former assistant to Rodrigo Defederico during his time in charge, is a dark horse too. His Petro Mercada side played some of the best football in the domestic season and his association with Defederico, a legend of the game in Sargossa, doesn’t hurt either.

Capital Stadium, Hapilopper City
World Cup 90 Qualifier Match 14: Hapilopper 5-1 Rhubarbton
All things considered, everyone in Capital Stadium – be it members of Team Hapilopper, the 67,503 on hand (a new Capital Stadium attendance record, by the way), staffers, vendors, ushers, custodians, were a little bit nervous going into the match. Sure, Rhubarbton wasn’t anything to be concerned about. The thing that was concerning everyone in Hapilopper was going on thousands of miles away, in Audioslavia, where the Audioslavia Bulls were taking on the Tikariot Owls. Hapilopper needed to win their match, sure, but they also needed Audioslavia to take three points from Tikariot. If that happened, then Hapilopper would take the 2nd position in their group and take a playoff spot away.

Many fans at Capital Stadium were watching the Audioslavia match on their cell phones, aired by the Hapilopper Television Network’s online streaming service. They were wondering, hoping more than anything else, that the Audioslavians would take down Tikariot. Nothing against the Owls. Hapiloppians didn’t have a problem with Tikariot, but they stood in the way of Hapilopper’s chances of getting into the playoffs.

Not as if the Haps weren’t doing their part, mind you. Two minutes into the match, William Altenberry took the ball from some poor Rhubarbton midfielder and started rushing down the pitch. He looked for players to pass it to and found Peter Robson. Robson knew what he needed to do. He didn’t handle the ball that much, firing it from 25 yards straight past the hapless goalkeeper who had no idea what hit him. The ball flew over his head, and into the back of the net, putting the Haps up 1-0. A lot of the nerves among Hapiloppians went away.

All throughout the match, it seemed like Rhubarbton never got the handle of the match, which was appropriate considering their sterling performance during the qualifying campaign, only managing one point during their fourteen matches. Hapilopper eventually scored five goals in the match. Peter got another one in the 6th minute. Nathan Ellis, of all people, managed one in the 28th minute after lodging a bet with fellow defenseman Jerold Dickman. Fans watching on HTN noticed, about a minute before the goal, a casual conversation between Nathan, Jerold and goalkeeper Billy Solomon – where the three were joking and smiling before Nathan started running down the pitch with the ball.

“I bet a steak dinner on me getting down that pitch and scoring on that poor boy over there,” Nathan said, pointing towards the Rhubarbton goalkeeper.

“What, if you score…?” Jerold asked.

“If I score, you buy me a steak dinner and a nice glass of whiskey to wash it down with,” Nathan said, looking over at his fellow defenseman. “Or two or three, depends on how I feel.”

“And if you don’t?” Jerold asked.

“Then I buy you both the best damn steak in town and the best damn whiskey money can buy,” Nathan replied. “Jerold, plow the road.”

Jerold nodded his head. “Plow the road” was a legendary phrase amongst Hapiloppian footballers. During a now-legendary match between Hapilopper and Terre Septentrionale, just after the half, the Haps were down 2-0, when Ernie Stevenson swore he saw something in their opponents. Murray Hunnisett looked at his midfielders and shouted “Let’s plow the road!” and helped turn the team’s fortunes around. That story was told by footballers across Hapilopper as “one of the defining moments in Hapiloppian football, the moment that showed the world that Hapilopper was for real.”

Nathan looked at his keeper, nodded his head, and stared down the Rhubarbton keeper. He looked over at Jerold. Jerold nodded his head and pointed towards goal – a sign that Nathan was going to go for it and it was time to plow the road. Nathan started rushing down to the goal, rushing down the pitch. The crowd, realizing what was going on, started getting louder and louder. This wasn’t normally what he did. Nathan usually bulldozed his opponents. Now he was going for goal!

Even the strikers were helping hold off the Rhubarbton players. They knew what Nathan was trying to do. Eventually, Nathan made it to the Rhubarbton goal, faked once, faked twice, and sent it into the back of the net to the wild cheers of the fans on hand in Capital Stadium. He put his left index finger up and rushed back to his position to restart play. When he got there, he spotted a sheepish-looking Jerold Dickman, grinning and shaking his head.

“Just so you know, I like my steak cooked rare,” Nathan proudly declared.

The rest of the match was more of the same. The Haps won 5-1, only letting off the gas in the final few minutes, allowing some of the bench players some playing time. The biggest headline, aside from Nathan Ellis’s rush down the pitch, came at some point during the match when the public address announcer had some news.

“LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE. SCORE UPDATE FROM AUDIOSLAVIA: AUDIOSLAVIA ONE, TIKARIOT NIL.”

The fans at Capital Stadium erupted with euphoria with this news. If the score held, that means the Haps would play on in that two-legged playoff. When the final whistle blew in Hapilopper City, an audible gasp came out from the fans on hand, waiting for a score update from Audioslavia. Had Tikariot scored? Had Audioslavia held on?

Even the Hapiloppian players stood on the pitch, waiting for an update from Audioslavia.

“Ladies and gentlemen, a final score from Audioslavia,” the public address announcer boomed as the crowd gasped a little more. The Hapiloppian team rushed out to the pitch to hear the news.

“Final from Audioslavia: Audioslavia one…”

The crowd’s volume grew a little bit more.

“…Tikariot nil.”

That was it. The crowd exploded in a cacophony of euphoria. So too did the players, coaches and Team Hapilopper personnel, who erupted in their own celebration on the pitch. And in front of that pile of humanity, Nathan Ellis looked at the message on the screens across Capital Stadium.

“PLAYOFF-BOUND! HAPILOPPER’S NEXT OPPONENT: SOUTH NEWLANDIA.”

Nathan nodded. A huge smile came about his face. He looked back at his teammates, all of whom were celebrating in a pile a couple of yards away. He had thought back so much to that first Hapiloppian team, a team full of young, excited players such as himself, players that were ready to play some ball. He remembered the wild enthusiasm from the fans in Hapilopper, many of them watching the sport for the first time those years ago. And he remembered thinking to what could have been if a few things had been different. But then he looked at those young kids, many of whom had discovered the sport for the first time because of the actions of players like Nathan Ellis. Without that team running roughshod through the Baptism of Fire, it’s possible they may have chosen something else to do with their lives. It’s possible that without that team, Jerold Dickman may have chosen to play another sport. Toby Bryson may be in college right now studying to be an English teacher. Maverick King may be a motivational coach somewhere. Jimmy Huddleston may be in a mass media program at a college or in the start of a broadcasting career.

But instead, they chose to play football, and became a part of Hapilopper’s national football team when it was at its nadir. The kids joined the squad after it had been racked by scandal and bankruptcy. But those kids weren’t going to be defined by that. They weren’t going to be bothered by the HFA’s checkered past, by the fact that Team Hapilopper languished for several cycles, lost without a real rudder or a goal.

And Nathan Ellis, the most violent of all the violent gentlemen in international sport, volunteered to lead the team, the kids, his kids, back to relevance. He had been the last one left, and everyone wondered how this thug of a ballplayer would fare trying to lead these kids to victory. Would he lose it? Would he become an absolutely insufferable piece of shit to work with?

No. He relished in the role. They helped bring football in Hapilopper back to relevance, and in the process, helped Nathan Ellis secure the best years of his entire career. He understood the assignment next. Team Hapilopper would take on the South Newlandia Elephants in what was, for all intents and purposes, a four-half, 180-minute football match. The first half would take place at Capital Stadium, while the second half would emanate from South Newlandia. The side with the most goals at the end of those four halves would make it to World Cup 90.

Nathan stared intensely at the words “SOUTH NEWLANDIA” on the video board at Capital Stadium. They were the only thing now that stood between him and his lifelong dream, to play in the most glorious sporting event in all the multiverse. There was nothing else that needed to be said. It was time to prepare for the Elephants.

Nathan felt it. He felt like his finest moment was ahead. His team's finest moment. His nation's finest moment. It was time for the Haps to shine.

Chromatik Football Federation Headquarters
Chromia, Capital District, Chromatika

As her heels clattered along the marble floor at the location of the Chromatik Football Federation Headquarters, Sandra Sybill nervously clutched the envelope held in her left hand. She'd dressed up for this occasion - suit, skirt, even a beret cap; if this was going to be her last day as the manager of the Anomalies, she was going to make it look good, at least - gracious in defeat.

Twelve hours ago, Chromatika had suffered one of the greatest defeats in the nation's history in the sport of football. Twelve hours ago, the Premier of Chromatika, the Banijan Ambassador, the defectors from Nyowani Kitara, and a sold out crowd at The Tidal Wave were in shock as they saw their Anomalies get knocked out of the World Cup in a shock defeat. The stunned silence that followed after the final whistle was legendary. It was a political embarrassment, it was a footballing disaster, and she couldn't help but feel responsible.

The two teams were matched from the get-go, but she could tell that there was an air of tension from the beginning whistle. Odede Angonga, one of the most vocal supporters of Nyowani Kitara's government on the squad, was jawing with Enigma Armageddon from the beginning. Despite a nice goal from Hauser and a nifty strike from Wen, the score was tied two-two in the second half.

Then, the darkest moment in Chromatik sports - well, in her opinion, anyway - happened. Supposedly, Angonga insulted Chromatika to Armageddon's face. After the match, she heard from Vasiliy Marten Kuznetsov, who had been near the incident, that "harboring traitors was a disgrace".

Perhaps it was because of the tension that had been building internally in the Chromatik squad about what to do with the match to come. Perhaps Enigma had been dealing with other issues. No matter what the reason, the Captain of the Anomalies snapped. His kick above Angonga's head was deliberate, making contact that dropped Angonga immediately. He was shown a red card, and that was that. Juxon Fillar and the club hung on as far as they could, but Owino Odede's strike was true, and Chromatika was out.

She'd hardly slept at all, trying to figure out where things had gone wrong. Was it the three draws, two of them nil-nil against nations they should've trounced? Was it the fact that Chromatika as a nation was going through trying times? Did it matter at all?

She was going to resign and go back to her corner of the woods and spend the rest of her life away from football.
Thirty Minutes Later

As Sandra Sybill stepped out of the offices of Viktor Karras, Jr., the envelope, unopened in her hand, told the story.

"You don't get to step away from this," the Chairman of the CFF had stated, "You get to be a part of the rebuilding effort. Trim down your squad. Get them in shape for the Cup of Harmony. If you don't make the Quarterfinals, you can go. Until then, I want you to give your all to the club while I give my all to trying to find a replacement should you fail."

He hadn't been angry with her - disappointed, sure, but measured. He had insisted that Enigma Armageddon be suspended for the time being, and the Cup of Harmony as a whole, which she agreed wholeheartedly without any problems.

Of all things, it was the words of a Nyowani Kitara player that echoed in her head:

"For people like me, this is all for the game," Odour Bigombe had told her after the game, "Sorry about the ones that make it more than that."

For the love of the game, she'd give it a second shot. Mostly, just so she could say that she had given it her all - but at this very moment, that was worth it.

Cabo Azure 3 - 2 Brenecia
(4-2-3-1) 1 - Finnan; 2 - Bravender, 5 - Leadbetter, 6 - Giltanan, 22 - Seeler; 4 - Schofield (19 - Mikoliunas 69'), 13 - Garrard (8 - Conway 81'); 7 - Carpenter, 9 - White, 10 - Byrne; 14 - Tristram (21 - Lofthouse 69')
Goals: White 29', Lofthouse 78'

It would go down in the history books as a defeat.
Because it was. But. Whatever. Derdriu Wright wasn't thinking about the result.
This wasn't because Brenecia had outplayed Cabo Azure, been undone by poor finishing or some non-systematic failure. They hadn't. Silveira thrashed in a striker just nine minutes in and had a second disallowed not long after, set up by an offside Montenegro. Brenecia equalised, but Ferreira hammered home a brilliant strike beyond Finnan's reach, and never relinquished the lead. Montenegro earned, and scored, a penalty when Giltanan bundled him down early in the second half, fairly killing off any chance of Brenecian revival, though a bullet header from the substitute Lofthouse at least pulled back some respectability. Still, the hosts deserved their win.
But for Wright, it was an education.
It had been a surprising and divisive lineup. With Brenecia stuck in second no matter what, people were split: would she stick to her best lineup or experiment? The answer: both.
Poor Mhacha White. She'd been ploughing a largely fruitless turf, criminally underrated at the point of Brenecia's spear for years, and pretty much ignored as the Patriots' third-choice striker. She did not expect a run as their first-choice attacking midfielder. She was older than she'd been, slower and weaker, but sharper mentally than ever. She didn't have an amazing passing range, but she was clever, diligent, and able to start moves and finish them. It was one such that lead to Brenecia's equaliser, harrying and tackling Alves in possession, flipping the ball to Byrne and surging forward; Byrne passed to Seeler on the overlap, who crossed to Tristram, who knocked down the ball for White on a run Garrard probably wouldn't have made. The Farrenton striker's finish was scuffed slightly, but still had the power and placement to get between Antunes' legs. And it was her assist on Lofthouse's late goal, too, willing to drift wide and chip in a cross, Lofthouse crashing in at the near post.
Now, as for the things which didn't work ...

Seeler was one. Sort of. Seeler wasn't one directly, and, actually, had a very good game, but was sometimes exposed at the back. Also, Brenecia's central defence was fucking glacial.
Triss Roscommon had been Brenecia's starting leftback for ages, and was their captain, and still deserved to fulfil that role. But. She was the wrong end of 30, and her lack of pace could be exposed... her lack of pace for a fullback. Tall, proud, intelligent and with an enviable passing range, she could help sweep up with Leadbetter, who was still their best pure defender, maybe the second-best defender in Brenecia's history. The issue that she'd played there maybe once in her career didn't bother Wright. She'd adjust. Or she wouldn't. Whatever.
So Seeler would come in at leftback, and Wright had a notion to put on another Southern Star player in goal. Anthea Finnan had made some great saves. She'd also let a few shots go through her gloves, and she wasn't as commanding in the air as Wright would like. Sorcha Tanner had played well, kept three clean sheets from three games - admittedly without really being challenged seriously in any of them, but staying awake was impressive enough - and was, in short, one of the few levers Wright could pull.
Hopefully these shifts wouldn't work out like the other experiment Wright did make. Garrard and Schofield was not a coherent midfield at international level; Garrard just needed to be a third man, in an international unit without that club degree of chemistry. He wasn't on the same wavelength as Schofield, he constantly left the man exposed, and when Schofield went off for Mikoliunas, Garrard's instincts to go forward and Mikoliunas' homicidal ultra-conservatism clashed even worse.
Brenecia could win against Polkopia, or could fall flat. The saddest thing was, Wright knew, she'd absolutely remain in situ even should the Patriots fall to the Cup of Harmony. Truth was, that simply might be Brenecia's place in the world in this era.
But if that would come to pass, it would be on her terms, searching for answers.

Starting XI vs. Polkopia:
(4-2-3-1) 12 - Tanner; 2 - Bravender, 5 - Leadbetter, 3 - Roscommon (c), 22 - Seeler; 19 - Mikoliunas, 4 - Schofield; 7 - Carpenter, 9 - White, 10 - Byrne; 14 - Tristram

Introducing: Bi.Lingo! Bi.Lingo is Polkopia's newest language-learning app, designed to provide a brief overview of select words and phrases in a number of languages across the multiverse! In the coming weeks, we are going to walk through some basic lessons in Polkopian and show you some of the neat features you can expect to experience on this app!

Now that we've earned some gems, we'll take a look at the shop and see what's in store for us today!

Image

This, of course, is our home screen, You'll notice that our first lesson has been highlighted in gold after we completed the lesson, and the next two lessons have been subsequently unlocked. Today, we won't be exploring these lessons, unfortunately.

Instead, we will be exploring the shop feature! You'll notice that at the top of the screen there's a icon to access the shop feature. We're going to clock on it and see what the shop has to offer us today.

Image

Every week, the shop randomly refreshes with different items. This week, we have the Profanity Filter and the Refill Lives feature.

The Profanity Filter allows the instructors' dialogues to contain swear words and language that would otherwise not be seen in an instructional setting. We at Bi.Lingo believe that some individuals learn better if certain formalities were taken out of instructional language, in order for conversations to feel more authentic.

The Refill Lives features is just that! When completing a lesson, you have five "strikes," if you will, to complete the lesson. Every time you submit an incorrect answer, you lose a life. Once you hit five strikes, you are unable to proceed until your lives refill up on their own. With this feature, you won't have to wait!

We're going to purchase both of these add-ons and continue or lesson off-screen. Tune in tomorrow to witness how your experience will change with both of these features!

Let's take a look at Gazeta Mytanija's lead story:

Image

4 MORE YEARS OF PINK AND GREEN
JEDINSTVO, MNK & EKOLOGIJA ALL GAIN SEATS; MECAVA-CATIC TO RETURN AS PREMIER

by Avdotia Dzotsoeva

The Mytanar electorate gave the Jedinstvo-Ekologija coalition a resounding vote of confidence as they went to the polls and increased their combined number of seats by 47 to give the coalition a thumping majority without the need for a confidence-and-supply arrangement with Radnika, as occurred after the ’28 election. Premier Ana Mecava-Catic greeted enormous crowds in her hometown Thessia as the exit polls confirmed what many had believed for a long time in the run-up to the election: she would return as Premier and she would have an even stronger hand to play.

Jedinstvo dominated the election, winning 20 more constituencies than they did four years ago and seizing a ludicrous 46% of the vote nationally (an increase of 10%), with seats in places like Sedlovina, Volkovija and Shkelzena which would previously have been untouchable for a left-of-centre party falling the way of Mecava-Catic. It is a vote of confidence which many predicted, but the scale of the reality still seems difficult to believe. Coalition partners Ekologija reinforced their vote from four years ago, gaining 12 seats overall with voters seemingly pleased with the part they have played in the governing coalition. It will be interesting to see how Radenka Kovacevic negotiates the upcoming days, she could conceivably ask for more ministerial roles for her party given their increased vote share.

For the MNK – who will remain as Mytanija’s main opposition party – it will be a bittersweet moment under new leader Krsto Gojkovic. They increased their constituency count by 6, taking all of those seats from the far-right Spasenje, but they could only increase their national vote share by 2% overall as the minor parties collapsed. Some MNK backbenchers are already leaking their disappointment, some claiming that a more moderate leader could have capitalised on the collapse of Zajedno Naprijed! and Radnika better. Gojkovic isn’t expected to depart as leader though with his backers pointing to the increased number of seats and minor uplift in overall vote share as signs that he has a platform to build upon.

For Mecava-Catic this is a result which should give her renewed confidence in her Premiership. She may begin to take a more ambitious approach in foreign policy, perhaps involving Mytanija overseas diplomatically in the same way that some of her pre-Conflict predecessors were able to. The coalition agreement has largely worked well and whilst there might be some minor bumps in the road to skirt around (see Ekologija’s desire to phase out fossil fuel power stations entirely), the personal relationship between Mecava-Catic and Kovacevic has been enough to drag their parties along with them thus far. Many representatives in both parties have similar friendships, agreeing on many issues, you imagine that compromises will not be too hard to find.

Meanwhile the minor parties will be licking their wounds. This could be the end of the road for Davor Juric’s leadership of Zajedno Naprijed! He went into this election promising that his party would look to take seats from both left and right and instead they lost 18 seats overall including 12 constituencies. Several of these went to Ekologija, suggesting that some liberal centrists went over to the more lefty environmentalist party rather than vote for a ZN! which was courting votes from the right. A few also went to Jedinstvo, perhaps demonstrating that many have been persuaded by Mecava-Catic’s leadership and vision for the reconstruction of Mytanija.

Spasenje lost out to Krsto Gojkovic’s MNK in many places, showing that the new MNK leader is at least palatable to far-right voters. Some felt that Gojkovic was the best vehicle for their beliefs, even if many Spasenje voters are Zentrian nationalists at heart (cf. with Gojkovic’s general acceptance of Mytanar unity). Spasenje lost 8 constituencies with 6 going to the MNK and perhaps more surprisingly one apiece to Jedinstvo and Ekologija, both either in or adjacent to the capital, where working class voters may well have been persuaded by the coalition government’s economic offering.

Radnika lost 15 seats whilst the far-left PsD lost 4. The former appear to be in the electoral wilderness, marginalised entirely by the rise of Jedinstvo (and to some extent Ekologija too), it is difficult to see how they might come back from this and already there is talk of Radnika dissolving and its representatives sitting either as independents or either Zajedno Naprijed! for those on the right of the party or Jedinstvo/Ekologija for those on the left. Leader Nikola Devic did at least secure his seat unlike Slobodan Acimovic at the previous election and he has dismissed any notion of the party dissolving, though insiders suggest he is putting a brave face on things.

In the end Jedinstvo and Ekologija are the real winners, increasing their combined number of seats by 47 and obtaining 238 altogether. They have a majority of 33 and the opposition parties will find it difficult to cause trouble for the government’s legislative agenda unless they can fracture the coalition. At the moment that seems like a very unlikely possibility. Expect Mecava-Catic and Kovacevic to cement the nationalisation of healthcare; continue their huge raft of public investment in infrastructure; and further sustainable developments in the energy and transport sectors. MNK backbenchers are already briefing that they believe this spending is unsustainable, bemoaning the fact that Gojkovic and his team seem to have accepted the left’s narrative on spending during the election campaign. This could become a new attack line for the MNK should Gojkovic change his tune.

In the end it might not matter very much, Mecava-Catic has the majority she wanted. She is a lot more powerful today than she was yesterday. Jedinstvo and Ekologija have the power to remake Mytanija in their image.
