Saltstead narrowly overcome Adab
Adab’s Cup of Harmony 81 campaign got off to an exciting, but ultimately losing, start as the team went down 4-5 against fellow Group C side Saltstead.
Ranked 89th in the world coming into this match at the Kitchener Stadium in Avondale, Sylestone, Adab were not favorites to win against 49th-ranked Saltstead. Nevertheless Saad Kaykali’s side had shown a penchant for holding on against – and indeed triumphing over – higher-ranked teams throughout the World Cup qualifiers, and many hoped that trend would continue in this match.
Eventually this would turn out to be Saltstead’s day, but it cannot be denied that Adab put up a valiant fight.
Adab began the match in their typical attacking, high-pressing style, aiming to put the Saltstead defense under stress from the very first minute and cause it to collapse. But the approach quickly backfired, as the Saltstead players held on under the pressure, marking the front three of Enlilbani Yargab, Jushur al-Kufa, and Rebekah Yissakar and preventing them from bringing the Adabian attacks to completion.
The Stallions, as their opponents are nicknamed, gradually pushed them back and began dominating possession in the midfield, with Natasħa Aħterop in particular proving herself in this stage of play, outmaneuvering Emma Arthur and Alulim Sinmuballit and delivering the ball with increasing regularity into the Adabian half of the field. This culminated in the first Saltstead goal just 12 minutes into the match, as Aħterop, running down the wing, sent the ball rolling across the width of the penalty box to Reinhard Åubreħtssen, who promptly blasted the ball in with impressive precision.
The Adabians regrouped and immediately began their counterattack. Having admirably held on under great pressure, the Saltstead defense began to give way, allowing al-Kufa to break through past a series of Saltstead players in the 26th minute on his way into the penalty box. His shot, however, was less than accurate and almost ended up flying past the net if it hadn’t been for Yissakar’s quick action at the other end of the box, leaping to greet the ball and send it down into the net to tie the score.
Yet this tie would prove short-lived, as no less than three minutes later Nico Joxepħssen made his presence known to everyone in the stadium with a sudden, powerful right-footed strike from well outside the box. The Adabian defenders could only watch in awe as the ball went straight to the net, with keeper Satchit Chandrasekar crumpling to the grass in a feeble attempt to intercept the fast-moving object.
Having secured a 1-2 lead, the Saltsteaders gradually abandoned their attack and returned to a more defensive, tactical approach, daring the Adabians to come at them only to strangle them at midfield, taking away possession of the ball and allowing them little chance to endanger the penalty box and deliver the ball to the front three. This approach worked; no more goals would be scored in the first half.
The scoreline would only change after the half-time break, the Adabians coming back with a vengeance just three minutes into the second half. Exploiting a gap in the defense between Micħäl Aurelius and Jan-Pijr Åudenberg, al-Kufa found himself with an unimpeded path to the box and aother chance at the goal. This time he made good on it, tricking Saltstead keeper Robert-Jan van Daal into going to his (al-Kufa’s) left before firing the ball to his right and into the open net.
Once again the match was tied, now at 2-2, and again both teams went on the attack, eager to establish a clear lead. Adab took the lead for the first time in the 55th minute, with veteran striker Yargab scoring off a remarkable Yissakar assist, which saw the latter dance her way around Aurelius, Åudenberg, and Serena van Middelkamp to even enter the penalty box, where she finally delivered the ball to Yargab for the kill. But only a minute later the Stallions struck back, with midfielder Theodor Felicianus charging forward with the ball from the center circle. He feigned a pass to Åubreħtssen, which was enough to distract the Adabian defenders and leave them watching as Felicianus continued on with the ball anyway, stopping at the penalty box line and successfully shooting straight to the back of the net.
Yet again the match was tied, this time at 3-3, but there would not be another Adabian comeback. Indeed, the Adabians began to slow down, appearing to run out of gas as the Stallions resumed their attack with renewed vigor, pushing their opponents back deeper into their own half. Åubreħtssen added to his goal tally in the 67th minute off a Joxepħssen corner, and with Arthur and Sinmuballit increasingly outmaneuvered at midfield the Adabians found themselves unable to mount a sustained offense. Nevertheless it was still a surprise when Adab manager Saad Kaykali brought Arthur off the pitch in the 70th minute, replacing her with 34-year-old veteran Salman al-Muntar.
Saltstead put themselves up 3-5 with a remarkable Aħterop goal in the 78th minute. Narrowly avoiding Ephraim Orlev just outside the center circle, she sent the ball flying towards the penalty box. If it was directed at a Saltstead midfielder or forward, then no one came forward to greet it, and they didn’t have to. The ball lowered just in time to enter the net. Chandrasekar mistimed his jump, sending himself onto the grass and leaving the ball with an open path into the net.
Adab cut into their opponents’ lead in the closing minutes of the match, with Yargab scoring his second goal of the match in the 89th minute, this time off an al-Kufa assist from the penalty box line. Though the Adabians continued charging at their opponents until the end of the match, eventually they were unable to score another goal and would have to content themselves with a 4-5 loss as the opening to their Cup of Harmony campaign. A loss, yes, but nevertheless an epic and valiant one that would undoubtedly be remembered for years to come.
