Yes, the man who won this landslide clearly was threatened by McGovern and needed to spy on the Democrats.

Nixon was paranoid as fuck and deeply cynical, the kind of man who thought he was always going to be misunderstood, double-crossed and defamed. It's clear from his own personal statements about himself as well as the Nixon tapes.

So, just going by the election results is going to give you a poor picture of how he perceived things.

By that logic, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wouldn't need to give two shits about any opposition, because he wins massive majorities, and Putin likewise; but that's not how the world clicks per se...

You know Nixon wasn't even president in 1968? Never can tell with the American education system...

the 60s made the 70s possible, and the 80s blew it. just my personal take. i was 12 in 1960, and 32 in 1980.
the civil rights and peace activists were were as much heroes as anyone who faced death or capture in combat.
not saying more, but not saying less either.

its always up to the young, and their willingness to sacrifice their own reputations, lives, and freedoms,
that make an honorable, gratifying, and even happy future possible.

there were prevailing assumptions among other generations that were wrong then, and there are again now.

young enough to have not yet been taught by culture to hate logic, but old enough to understand the meaning of honor and responsibility,
even in the face of being labeled just the opposite for doing so.

there are differences, big differences some of them, but also the same big hopes and real possibilities for fulfillment,
or at the very least, progress in the direction of doing so, of those hopes.

(i'm still saying the same thing few are hearing on either side now as i was then; "solar powered narrow gauge railways, tiny houses and lowering the human birth rate")

i still can't really expect people to understand what i mean by the aspects of my own perspective, but i guess that's "such is life".

Well said, m'boy.

Just from a cursory glance at Bear Stearns, can we just ban him please. No I don't mean just from NS, I mean from reality. Like, someone mouse a toggle box over him, right click, and select "delete."

As for the topic:

I wouldn't say that the young are somehow inherently willing to surrender themselves to death in the name of what they believe is some greater good. It just seems, to me, like there's some threshold gaps somewhere in there, between when a person starts getting old enough to think for themselves to some degree and when they finally, truly get worn down by it all and give up on trying to change the world or whatever, when they often don't really comprehend the likelihood of it happening perhaps, and so don't feel the fear of it, and don't necessarily have some soul-crushingly miserable mid-tier dead-end job yet for the most part, and the very foundational principles of what they believe are still being formed, bent and sometimes even broken and replaced where this is somewhere from difficult to impossible later on, and they're almost inherently under the boot of society by and large because they just haven't established themselves within it yet, so on and so forth. It's just a perfect storm to create a person who is viciously hungry for change and willing to push for it by any means they can.

I worry, sometimes, that some day we're probably gonna discover biological immortality and our civilisation will just stagnate and perhaps even regress in the form of some awful extreme gerontocracy, but on the other hand I consider that maybe our minds will change purely biologically after that if not before to be more conducive to seeking ever greater perfection in all spheres, and that those on long-term sabbaticals from work, with increasingly neotonous, flexible, and clever minds will fill this role I've described that the young do now in society, or perhaps eventually we'll reach a point where automation means very few people need to work for very long at all and we'll all have the time to be intensely concerned with pondering all these things over. (Economists say we're not getting there at least any time soon and I'm inclined to believe them at least with that "any time soon" caveat, but in principle I would think pretty much anything can be automated sooner or later, but well this is a bit beside the point anyway.)

Edit: a word

Meme political axis chart thing (really not reflective of my opinions on capitalism vs. communism and regulationism vs. laissez-faire due to poor question framing on the test's part in those areas)

I agree with the first part, in that Nixon's crime of covering up a burglary pales in comparison to the war crimes he perpetrated in Cambodia and Vietnam. But American Presidents can fire bomb brown people and use chemical weapons with impunity, so the domestic crimes are the only way to take them down.
