“And so they fought." Unto the Breach: A Gate RP Operation Forward Unto Dawn: United Nations Expeditionary Force Inspired by Tophat’s The Way Forward. Hi, and welcome to a soft reboot of Tophat Empire's The Way Forward: A GATE RP. This is an RP based upon the GATE anime/manga by Takumi Yanai, but no worries if you've never seen/heard of it (I didn't before the original either). I really enjoyed the premise of the anime and manga, but really felt that it fell short on its potential - needlessly devolving into a propaganda-fest with cardboard cut-out goodies and badies. The premise is that a portal to another world has opened in the heart of the city of Stockholm, with what appeared to be an army straight out of fantasy fiction spilling out and indiscriminately attacking innocent civilians in an abhorrent and unprovoked attempted invasion. While the dragons, orcs and knights of the invaders eventually proved to be no match for the Swedish military, thousands still died in the attack and the world demanded action. Sweden asks the United Nations to organise an international coalition to travel beyond the gate to identify and defeat the invaders, exacting just reparations while ensuring peace into the future. When the RP starts, the expedition has established a foothold on 'Alnus Hill', where the Gate on the other side is located and have fought off a determined offensive from the invaders - known as the Empire to the natives. In doing so, the UN has proven its conventional superiority, decimating the force that was many times its size, and is now preparing to launch long-term reconnaissance missions behind enemy lines, which is where our characters come in. In the RP, you can choose to apply as a member of the UN expedition (be that a soldier, an embedded reporter, a scientist, engineer, civil affairs officer, intelligence officer or whatever) or as a native of what is being called the 'Special Region'. If you apply as a native, I ask that you remember that Earth is above and beyond more technologically advanced than anything they could have seen in the past - even with magic at their disposal. The focus of the RP will be on the UN however, so if you want to be a native not in contact with the UN, it will be significantly more difficult to interact with the plot. The characters will help determine the future of both of the worlds as the UN, discovering its clear superiority, must decide what its role in the Special Region is: an invader, a peacekeeper, a conqueror? All the while interests back on Earth seek to tug the mission in their own directions to help achieve their own goals.
