2: No, it means you're in denial/ lying to yourself.

Got it, so even through I fit the criteria for autism I'm not autistic because........your technicality.

Yeah, Nana, but being autistic is as diverse as a grouping as being non-autistic (actually a bit more, since we have a tad lot of in-group variation according to what way our autism present as).

The point is that the genes and biological conditions for autism aren't understood, the way our [autistic - pathologized or not - x allistic] brains are different is very partially understood, how the human brain works overall isn't even close to half-understood, the best way to deal with each kind of autism if understood by some academia not widely applied and known, much less would be talking about "curing" autism.

It is possible to change some problematic elements of the system, but overall making people have neurotypical-like brains is totally science fiction and parents shouldn't be fooled by such claims of any relevant proximity to attaining such a thing.

This debate is kinda moot because it is much easier to restructure society to accommodate the "easy" kinds of autism and change the "hardest" ones into something "easier" than actually making autism disappear.

My mother loves the fact that I'm aspie because it's part of what makes me, me. I wouldn't be the same if I wasn't that way.

Some people are comfortable about mental disabilities, yes.

Note that this is a hypothetical cure we're talking about. Also note that people like you and KAS are high functioning ASD. Note that you can probably objectively choose what you want. I want you to then think about those in the spectrum who aren't as fortunate and tell me, is it really terrible to want to bring them out of that shell?

I'm aware that you're a diverse group, but I wonder if you understand that it's irresponsible to assume that autism, as broad as it is, doesn't have any detrimental effects on many of you.

The first two, I was talking about the unintended implications of your post, not your intentions. The third, I apologize for my presumption. You still have not addressed my main point, however. I am also curious to know in what way you are not neurotypical, because if you have a disorder that is not on the autism spectrum I would like to

What my disorder is is immaterial. It isn't ASD.
Dyakovo wrote:To be actually diagnosed with autism, the symptoms have to limit and/or impair everyday functioning. If a person is not limited or impaired by their symptoms, they are not autistic.

And if they overcome the negative symptoms but their neurology and their neutral/potentially beneficial symptoms remain intact, they're still autistic.

Learning to live with your disability is not the same thing as not having the disability. I've learned to live with mine, this doesn't change the fact that I am severely hampered in certain circumstances.

I agree. It is also irresponsible to claim all autistics suffer only detrimental effects like Dyavako. And what many people forget is that detrimental is relative. Something that is bad to someone may be good to another.

I mean, I could also make being neurotypical look horrible and autism look like a shining pillar of greatness. Or I could make being Neurotypical the best thing in existence and autism a horrifying fate.
Autism and Neurotypical can be bad or good. Whether you get the good or bad side to either, the other side does exist.

Well Duavako is refusing to recognize Autism can be good or bad. It doesn't matter that many autistics have told him they like having autism and how it has helped them in life, because the people's opinion doesn't matter nearly as much as the official paper that tells them what they are even if they aren't in reality.
Caring about official paper more than actual people and their opinion/experience/thoughts. Come to think of it, he might be autistic.

KAS, I think you're missing his point. What I think Dya is trying to convey is that medically, autism is a condition that is detrimental to those with it. It causes difficulties in several aspects of life. When a condition prevents, say, a schizophrenic from functioning outside of an institution, that is detrimental. When someone with ADHD gets booted from school because of the behaviors provoked by the condition, that is detrimental to the person. When an autistic has to take speech therapy because the condition caused an impediment, that is detrimental. A negative effect caused on the body due to the condition.

See what I mean? Dyakovo can correct me if I'm wrong.

Autism comprises a whole spectrum of conditions, so there is no single answer. Some are very debilitating, and any possible "cure" would be welcome. In other cases, it's relatively harmless and doesn't necessarily need "curing."

Well I guess that shows your arrogance in believing you are right completely, even through you are not autistic and the actual autistics disagree with you. Because somehow you know more about autism than people with autism.
