ERRORISM RESURGENCE RESPONSABLE FOR FIXTURE SCANDAL

EMERGENCY COMMITTEE, MINISTRY BOTH BLAME RESURGENT ERRORIST MENACE FOR FIXTURE MISHAP

54 fired as Ministry bungles investigation of Ministry bungling

NEW MONTREAL - What began as an innocent typo is slowly spiralling out of control, with potentially devasting consequences for both the Ministry of Morale and, quite possibly, the rest of civilization.

Official inquiries by both the Ministry of Morale and Parliament's Emergency Committee on Emergencies suggest that the incorrect fixture schedule published by the Ministry of Morale might not have been an innocent typo, but might instead be the first shot in a renewed War on Errorism (see background article below), according to committee chair Laurent Grododo.

"Audioslavia and NMS both participated in the War on Errorism back during World Cup 10," said Grododo to reporters gathered outside the parliament building. "With us hosting, and the Bulls defending champions, any descendants [of the 107 million Alan Belmores who were interned for grammatical errors] with an axe to grind will see World Cup 64 as their best chance for revenge."

"They're targeting numbers as well as letters now," added Grododo. "If we're not careful, our punctuation supplies will be next. Do we want our children to grow up perpetually afraid that someday, they'll reach the end of a sentence, only to find that Errorists have destroyed the period?"

Minister of Morale Ephraim Selendon was quick to announce his concerns about a renewal of the War on Errorism. "This first typo is a test of our resolve," he said. "If we don't stand firm, we risk being buried in a wave of grammatical chaos that would make even the sternest junior high Language Arts teacher lose her faith in the written word as a meaningful way to communicate." The Ministry of Morale's official inquiry into how and why incorrect fixture schedules were published is expected to call for increased vigilance against Errorist threats to all stages of World Cup play.

The full report is expected to be delayed until midweek, as nothing has gone right with the Ministry's investigation. It hit an early snag when someone gave an off-the-record interview with the ASMV press, blaming Dancougar interns for the typo that led to the incorrect fixture listings. The Darmeni press quickly jumped on the story as well, and the Ministry of Morale found itself looking even more foolish than before, assuming such a thing is even possible.

The Ministry was already under pressure from Parliament's Emergency Committee on Emergencies, whose members have been in session non-stop for 72 hours. The pressure doubled after copies of news articles on the leak reached the Emergency Committee. The Committee then summoned Minister of Morale Ephraim Salendon and suggested that he immediately sack all Dancougar employees at the Ministry of Morale in the same of keeping the Ministry and World Cup safe from the threat of errorism. Salendon and the Ministry of Morale's One Committee to Rule Them All unanimously rejected this course of action, calling it "a great way to get sued." The Emergency Committee then subpoenaed all the toilet paper in the Ministry of Morale offices and refused to give it back until the Ministry reconsidered their opposition to the Committee's proposed reforms.

As part of the deal, all 27 Dancougar interns visiting on an exchange program were immediately fired, along with one Dancougar cafeteria sous-chef, one Dancougar mid-level project manager in the IT department, ten employees named Daniel, seven named Danielle, one named Danforth and seven people with the last name of Daniels. All 54 were seen exiting the building and heading directly into Burnham Fordaire Cash, a prominent tort law firm located three block from Ministry offices.

Among the 54 people fired were the person in overall charge of assembling the report on the incorrect fixture sheet, as well as three key staffers who were responsible for most of the research on the consequences of the original War on Errorism. Reports further suggest that one of the staffers, upon hearing that he had been let go on account of his name, lit the contents of his trash can on fire in order to set off his office sprinkler. The subsequent destruction of a computer and several valuable stacks of notes are believed to have delayed the report's publication even further.

Minister Salendon was unequivocal when asked what was the biggest impediment to the War on Errorism: "The Emergency Committee on Emergencies needs to put a sock in it."

Today's History Lesson: World Cup 10 and The War on Errorism

The Global War on Errorism was the single most confusing and violent incident in World Cup 10; an impressive feat in an event that was loaded to the gunwales with future Hall of Famers behaving badly. The chaos began when The Belmore Family (TBF) threatened to sue Timway for damages of $100 every time TBF "loose a match." (sic) Kingsford authorities, citing violations of the Constitution of Proper Language, Second Revised Addition, swiftly lowered the boom:

Reprinted from the Kingsford Times wrote:"Concerning the word 'Loose' and it's respective forms;

In use as an adjective: 'The rope I tied was loose'
In use as an action or instruction: 'Please loosen the screw' ; 'I loosen the cord'
In use as an infinitive: 'I am going to loosen the tiles'
In use with -ing: 'Bill is loosening the knot'

--The word loose is an adjective;
It shall be an adjective;
and to use it not as an adjective is a crime against humanity;
With the proper suffix (en);
loose can be a verb;
BUT ONLY THEN;
and the terminal suffix (ing) shall ONLY be used;
if following the proper suffix (en)--

--If a crime against humanity is committed;
The punishment, as decided on;
by the International Council of Grammatical Elders;
is to be:

-Lightly Flogged (if within boundaries of Oglethorpia);
-Made Into Ketchup (if within boundaries of Evisceratomatoes);
-Go to Snub Nose 38 On Your Free Weekends (if within boundaries of Audioslavia);
-Read the Gilmeecian International Times (if within boundaries of any literate country *this punishment in conjunction with all others that apply*);
-Be Banned from listening to George Michael (if within boundaries of Total n Utter Insanity or Liverpool England);
-Death (if within boundaries of One Blue Dot, Gilmeecia, or any other opressed state);
-Spend 5 days in prison (all other countries)--"

The International Grammar Police Force, based in Kingsford, took swift action against the perpetrators to make the world safe for literacy. Chief of Police Zach Williams, of Lemmitania, announced that the population of TBF would be rounded up for their crimes against humanity on a prison ship charted for the occasion. A coalition was quickly organized, with all major footballing powers in agreement that some kind of action needed to be taken. Oglethorpia's government showed that their were two Wonderteams in their nation, one on the football field and the other working 9 to 4:30 in the capital:

Reprinted from the Oglethorpia Bureaucratic Tribune wrote:With the official 'okay' from President Marvin (as verified by forms 121486A and 121486B*) Oglethorpian Widespread Nationwide Police and Secret Intelligence Service forces have the go-ahead to track down and arrest any Alan Belmores (with proper signing of form 124025A) who would then be turned over to the Kingsforder government (with signing, verification and ratification of form 124025B) after lengthly Parliament hearings and unnecessary polling of the public, data collected, according to President Marvin, "for no apparent reason. Well, besides making pretty bar graphs."

...Conspiracy theorists have already accused President Marvin and the Oglethorpian government as hatching a plot to open up "Alan Belmore hunting season" allowing avid Oglethorpian hunters armed with high powered rifles, shotguns and double-action revolvers to hunt and kill wild Alan Belmores.

Spaam also quickly signed on to the pro-English, anti-Belmore coalition, although they seemed to be much more interested in the latter half of the operation. Fortunately, the New Montreal States government avoided the siren songs of jingoism and anti-Belmorean prejudice...

Chief Paladin Frog's Great Grammatical Ukase wrote:All violators of this vital grammatical law are to have signs indicating that they were members of the ex-national soccer team (E.D. - they had been dismissed after failing to earn a single point during the first half of WC10 qualification) and then be locked in the Paladin Dome during a game at the mercy of fans still P-Oed at the constant failure of the former team and looking to take vengeance on anything that supports said ex-team.

Except when we didn't. But all the evidence at the time suggested that this was an appropriate response to typo proliferation.

This newly minted coalition quickly began running into problems: it was revealed that there were 107 million Alan Belmores to be rounded up, not the 6,400 originally anticipated by planners. TBF dropped their lawsuit against Timway, depriving the group of their original casus belli, but Kingsford announced that the errorism consisted of the misuse of the word "loose" during the lawsuit, and not the lawsuit itself. Chief of Police Zach Williams abruptly revealed that he was from Audioslavia, not Lemmitania, and was subsequent booked for errorism by the International Spelling Police, based out of Remington County in Snub Nose 38, for having transposed "it" and "is."

The coalition then descended into a comic-opera blizzard of arrest warrants, as Audioslavia's military brass and the Sheriff of Remington County began trying to arrest each other over real and perceived errorist acts, mostly minor spelling errors.

While the leaders of the coalition bickered amongst themselves, their soldiers continued to round up Alan Belmores and load them onto Kingsford's prison ships. All 107 million Alan Belmores were dumped on the shores of Gilmeecia, where they were devoured by hellmouths as punishment for their crimes against grammar. And with that, the errorist threat was put to rest for well over two centuries.

Katy: Hey John, how is uni?
John: Hard work Katy. It's not all partying.
Katy: You sure, I wasn'that hard work for me.
John: That's because you have an IQ of 150
Katy: That does help
John: I'm not blessed with such gifts

Katy: So, got a girlfriend?
John: Yes, anyway you're too old for me.
Katy: Me, too old. I'm just in my prime right now.
John: Mum doesn't want me to get a high maintenance wife
Katy: I suppose I am high maintenance
John: You are a Princess

Katy: It's my job to be high maintenance
John: I prefer simple girls
Katy: So, what's she look like
John: Nothing special but not ugly either
Katy: Well, show me a photo.
John: OK

Katy: She'd look a lot better if she wore nice glasses
John: She needs those glasses
Katy: Gee, what if the kids have her bad eyesight!
John: I didn't think about that one
Katy: Anyway, she's your girlfriend.
John: I know

Katy: What's her name?
John: Beatrice
Katy: God, what an old fashioned name.
John: Well, her mum is Gertrude
Katy: That's worse
John: Well, I'm not dating her mum.

Katy: Good thing that too.
Amy: HEY HEY
Katy: Oh look, it's little Amy. Melody's little girl.
Amy: Some rude person called me stupid
Katy: Really?
John: That's not very nice.

Amy: Yeah, she was wearing these dumb glasses and a hessian sack.
John: Hang on, Beatrice wore a dress like that here today.
Katy: I see she's good with children
John: Nevermind
Amy: Yeah, she said those statues were brass. I said they were Gold plated.
Katy: They are gold plated.

John: She is like that ...

For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
-1 Timothy 4:10

The fight was short. Advance. Check corners. Fire. Within minutes, the entire cave had been flushed of its defenders. A frozen hell emptied. The Republic crushed.

Fifteen years after Gordonopia City surrendered, Norm Bates and his squad had silenced the last gasp of the old Republic. No more ex-soldiers hiding in the woods, the mountains, the desert, waiting to strike. The old ideals, or at least the idea of the ones that had survived the bloated, corrupt final days of the by-gone regime, would probably never die, but the last of their original defenders were gone; fallen on the cold stone floor of their final refuge, or captured by the Arbitrat of Force. Thirty-eight would breath no more. Twenty would now spend the rest of their lives behind bars, or else come face to face with the noose.

By some measures, the assault had been a roaring success. The strike team, the Archangels, had lost one man to an unfortunate ambush, and another had suffered a minor wound; a small price to pay compared to their foe. The elimination of the last holdout band from the Republican military was also both a tactical and a symbolic victory; any future Republicans who took up arms could call themselves nothing more than rebels.

As John Branson, the unit's technical chief, searched the captured equipment, though, it became apparent that they had suffered one big setback. For the past few years, the Empire had known that someone was propping up the last of the Republican holdout groups. Skibereen could be ruled out; a brief war had at least had the effect of ending shipments from that anarchic excuse for a nation, though it had come at a high toll. That left a world of potential supporters. Unfortunately, the Republicans had had the sense to attempt to destroy what remained of their records.

"The paper records are a no go, Cap," Branson began. "The bastards managed to get a bit of a bonfire going while we were storming through their frozen palace. We might have some luck salvaging through these hard drives if we get 'em back home, but..."

"Go on," Norm prodded.

"Well, let's just say it'll take some time. They fried them pretty good, but there might still be something in there."

"Pack them up then. Hopefully the Lord's feeling generous."

"Got it."

As his subordinate began packing up the scraps of the Republicans' hardware, Norm ventured to check on the rest of his men. The cave itself had several paths, but thankfully they all connected somehow. Whichever one he took, Norm would eventually find everyone.

Passing by a large, formerly empty chamber, Norm was snapped from his thoughts by a shout. The space was now being used as a holding cell for the prisoners, and one had just called to him.

"You, quiet down." Shouted Marcus Spaderman, the Archangel who was guarding this lot of sorry souls.

"No, Marcus, hold on a minute. What was that you said to me?" Norm asked.

A weathered, battle-hardened man, scruff of a beard hiding the lower half of his face, was the one to respond. "I called you a traitor," he said, his tongue as cold as the storm outside.

Norm stopped for a moment; how many times had he heard that phrase thrown around during the War, during this past year? It always seemed to come from those who had just been soundly defeated.

Still, he had the time. He walked over to where the man was tied, and bending down said, "Tell me, friend, what makes me a traitor?"

Stony expression lingering, the man answered, "Do you even need me to tell you?" Seeing Norm remain silent prompted the captive to continue. "You turn your back on the government of the people, handing it over to a tyrant. Your betray the Constitution set forth over a century before. You fight against the God given right of people-"

"God?" Norm interrupted with a firm conviction. "I fight against God? Answer me this: how long have you been fighting your... your crusade against autocracy?"

"Seventeen long years, as I'm sure you very well know. Seventeen years I've been fighting to show you traitors that what you stood was the death of our nation."

For a brief moment, Norm sat silently. He could see the resolve in the man's eyes, the total belief in his words. "Do you even know why I fought? Why I fight today? If you had grown up in the hellhole the Republic allowed, nay worked, to form in Tolten, you would be right here with me."

Norm paused, not sure if he needed to continue. The fire burning within him, though, was strong.

"Have you seen our nation in the past fifteen years? I don't mean the abysmal hovel and holes you've been hiding in all this time. No, I'm talking about the lives of our countrymen. Have you walked down the streets of any city in Gordonopia without the thought of what your next target was? My friend, God smiles on Gordonopia. Our people have jobs, hell, they have good wages to boot. Tolten, South Deska, all those rural decaying towns? They're now full of life. Our colonial Empire has grown for the first time in a century. Why, even attendance at church is at an all time high. We're not the ones fighting against God. God is smiling on our Gordonopia. He sent us to make sure you don't tear it to pieces."

Without waiting for the man's response, Norm stood and turned away. As he was calmly strolling out, the prisoner called out one last thing.

"Hey, where do I know your voice from?" He asked as if it were on the tip of his tongue. There was a reason Norm rarely took off his mask, though in cases like this one the new beard helped keep most people from recognizing him.

"Mine? I wouldn't know."

Half an hour later, after finding all of his men scattered throughout the cave, Norm settled into a bed in what used to be the Republican's sleeping quarters. He reached into his pocket, and pulled out the small bible that he carried with him on every operation. The pages, well-worn already after only a year, seemed to fall open to Psalms. Having plenty of time, he decided to start from there and simply read. He wouldn't be leaving until the storm cleared.

Who's who? Current flag of Ko-oren (left) and flag of former Kereca

Kericians draw 0-0 with doppelgänger

After a disappointing 0-3 setback against Michael VII at the Estadio Zapata, Kericia headed to Ko-oren to face an unfamiliar foe... or were they?

Kericia managed to hold onto a 0-0 draw, with keeper Brian Baker frustrating the attacking Ko-orenites with save after save. The Kerician back four held together remarkably well, giving their team a surprising point against a clearly superior side. The draw moved Kericia up to eighth in the table, as they try to improve on their last place finish in World Cup 63 qualifying.

The scene must have been bizarre for elderly Kericians watching at home, as familiar blue and green flags with a yellow cross were seen waving in the crowd. These were Ko-oren's, of course, but they happen to be nearly identical to the flag used by the former Kerecen government nearly a century ago. For those unaware, Kericia briefly competed internationally as Kereca and had some moderate success, including finishing runners-up in Cup of Harmony 33. Kericia is back, and so is their familiar orange-and-blue scheme, so the green and blue of Ko-oren is but a reminder of a distant past.

BNN Sports News Update: WC64 Qualifying - Game 2 Stats
Barunia 2-1 Nekoni
Escobar '27
Montoya '42
Castolo '74

GAME 2
Victor Castolo
Castolo sat alone in the dressing room, idly playing with the captain's armband. The armband that Ruskin should have been wearing. But he was gone, and now it was Victor's turn to lead the Suns out against Nekoni. A team that had come third in the Baptism of Fire. Compared to some of the teams in their group though, Nekoni were small-fry. Just like Barunia. And now they were looking at facing the rest of the group without their captain. Castolo was no stranger to the captain's role, but this was on another level to what he was used to. As the rest of the team came in, Castolo pulled the armband on. He'd just have to do the best he could.

Lucio David
As David walked in to the dressing room, he saw Castolo put the captain's armband on his arm. It was a reminder that Ruskin was not here. That had left a hole in the back that was being filled for this game by Pacifique Tsebo. Pacifique was a good guy, at least he wouldn't chew David out like Ruskin had last game. Of course, Lucio had always thought of Joric as a good guy. But that last game…he'd changed, and no-one had seen him since.

Joric Ruskin
"Same again."
Joric put the empty beer bottle and a ten Tilda note on the bar. As the barmaid whisked both away, he looked up at the tv on the wall. The game was on, broadcast live from Northport. It should have been at United Stadium, but for the war. So the game went to Northport, far away from the fighting. Safe, secure. Joric couldn't stand it. He'd had to get out. But a small part of him wished he was still there.

Joric barely noticed when his drink arrived, so caught up was he in the game. The Suns were playing far too forward, Millet was the only defender where he should be. Get back, Joric mentally shouted at them. he groaned as a Nekoni player broke free, only to be taking down from behind by a tackle from Lucio David, who received a yellow. "Should have been a red," muttered Joric, "damned bastard deserved it." Taking a swig of beer, he looked up in time to see the free kick form Escobar scythe into the top corner, beating Willans' glove by millimetres. There were groans around him, as his fellow drinkers showed their displeasure with the goal.

"That never was a foul. Damn referee needs his eyes checked." Said the man next to Joric. Ruskin took another swig of beer.He thought, "You think you're an expert? You don't even know who you're talking to." The words reminded him of what he's said to Castolo. Perhaps he'd been a bit harsh. But that had been the moment when he realised he was leaving.

"Speak of the devil." murmured Joric, as the image of Castolo filled the screen. The new Suns captain had tried for a shot on goal, only to be denied by the finger tips of the Nekoni keeper. As the camera tracked the striker, Ruskin couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. He should;t have spoken to Castolo like that, perhaps he should apologise? No, he'd burnt his bridges, there was no going back. What had happened had happened, and there would be no return. Still, he could not help watch with hope as Centena sent the ball in from the corner, and cheered as Horatio Montoya met it with his head and deflected it past Calderon to even the score.

Thirty minutes later, when Castolo scored the winner with a well-placed shot from a Zokora through-ball, Joric could not help but feel satisfied. His team had done well. No, Castolo's team had done well. He could no longer claim any part or possession of the Suns. It was time to move on, find another team. He had just the group in mind.

Wildcats losing in soccer,

It may only be the hermits who care, but Kinzar dropped a second game of World Cup qualifying, this time to a team that makes you want to grow facial hair. In fact, New Sideburn won our Baptism of Fire. We know you were paying attention to that with such incredible exuberance. No?

There were exciting moments in this, especially in the 12th minute when Clint Martinek made two incredible individual moves, one making some guy named Cheney Rosewood look like a statue, and then Leila Corvette was too slow to react to him. A corvette too slow? Only in soccer, we suppose, but someone please tell Leila that they have a great last name to live up too, and any more instances of them being too slow will lead to them getting a name change. Well, that's if Leila was a Kinzite, anyway. This goal made it 1-0 in favor of the Wildcats and all was wonderful! The only problem was that there were 78 more minutes to play. Plus the fact that the referee gave New Sideburn a really ridiculous penalty shot, but that would require a lot of extensive soccer analysis to describe why it was a bad call, and we know you aren't interested in that. Take our word for it. So the game ends in a win for the people who won our Baptism of Fire, joining the illustrious winners of Baptisms of Fire in the past, such as Dumania, Kuosio, and Edward City. Congratulations, our Baptism of Fire peers, and may you mirror the success of the Undeadzombiee's of the world.

Pygan Ust'dar had himself worked into a complete swivetby the time any of the staff or players began to show up for their day-after film review for the match against Kerblaekistan. He had been up all night watching the tape over and over. And with each review he became more agitated. Despite collecting a classic Sea Dragon 1-0 victory the match had been a complete mess. What at first glance appeared to be a superb defensive outing was soon uncovered to show a lack of any cohesive play covered neatly by a long string of excellent individual efforts. And when one took the time to go slowly round the outside with an unbiased eye it became all too apparent that even a home win over Kerblaekistan was more good luck than the results of great play.

All of the training and work the squad had built their style upon had gone out the door. Somehow he would have to get them to focus on the match at hand even when it was a lower raned opponent they faced. It would not be easy as that had been an Achilles heel through every facet of Sea Dragon history. In fact it was the only consistent part of their twenty-two Cup history. Just the thought of finding an answer to that problem was enough to make him consider momentarily the real possibilities of simply leaving and living out the rest of his life as a hermit needing nothing more than to appease the Mitrin Vega.

Perhaps the answer lay in the way the players were chosen. Perhaps there was a way to determine what drove each player so that he could fine tune his training and techniques to get the most out of each one. He had been reading “The Art of Foot Reading” during his personal quiet time and the author obviously thought that you could learn everything about anyone simply by studying their feet. It was a new idea that could revolutionize recruitment and training throughout all sports. But then again he had rescued the soaking wet book from the good graces of the third floor privy. Someone had obviously thought its contents a load of shit.

He knew he couldn’t talk to anyone in his current state of mind. Yelling mindlessly would get him nowhere. Slowly he began reading the headlines on Voogle. “Don’t persuade, defend or interrupt. Be curious, be conversational, be real. And listen.”. Perhaps that was the strategy he could use even if it did sound as full of shit as the foot book. The next headline was even more inauspicious- “Today is Weed Appreciation Day! Slowly he turned off the computer. This was going to be a very long day.

"So two wins from two games"

"Yep"

"So now we have boring RPs"

"Yep"

"All the interesting stuff happens when you lose"

"Yeah, winning is boring, no screaming at managers, no complaining"

"There are only so many ways to say 'well we dominated' or 'x was really good' or 'Milchama is proud of the Warriors'"

"There are just so many more ways to talk about losing"

"Yeah, bad decisions, coaching incompetence, player incompetence, fan anger, fan violence, outsized expectations, you name it"

"So then you want to lose more?"

"Are you crazy?"

"Yes"

"Who cares about boring RPs, I'd rather have Milchama win"

"Yeah then our expectations and egoism aren't unfounded but clearly there"

"That said how come Milchama have been sucking so much this campaign"

"What are you talking about?"

"Second place, that's awful"

"There have been two games!"

"So?"

"Two games!!!!! That's nothing. The Warriors are second on goal difference, it's not like it's been a bad campaign"

"But still second place"

"You're just kidding with me right?"

"Yes"

"Good"

"Except with that answer"

"They beat Jeru FC! The only other team that has an actual chance of beating them in this group!!!! You are ridiculous"

"Hey man, outsized expectations"

"I hate you"

"Well I hate you"

"No you don't"

"Well you don't either"

"Fair"

"This is stupid"

"See what winning does"

"You're the one whose angry about Milchama being in second place without a loss"

"Yeah well I had to find something to complain about"

"You know that kvetching is not mandatory"

"That's what you think!"

"Yes that is what I think"

"Uch I'm ending this before it turns into farce"

"Too late"

"F---!"

"It's not like anybody reads our RPs anyway"

"Yeah it's true, nobody has actually liked a Milchamian RP since 2006"

"I'll talk about it tomorrow"

"Ok"

"Until then let's root for Milchama to win"

"Deal"

"Come on You Warriors!"

"Let's Go Milchama!"

Two games had gone by for the Flames and their new skipper, Hilary Vander Rox. Two games.

Yet the naysayers had even more fuel to add to the fire of doubt.

Aye, the Flames were 2-0 with a pair of 1-0 wins. But those were against some meager opposition. Kinzar? Yelvodia? Most fans hadn't even known that those teams existed to be fair. How would they do against, say, Northern Sunrise Islands or Jeruselem? Eh?

Isaac had scored the goal in each game, as Hilary seemed poised to start her veterans for at least the first few games to get them time to play with each other, something that had been a problem for the Flames to schedule.

This was the Flames' style, though, right? Counterattack, and make the few shots count? Make it neigh impossible for the opposing side to score? Except here is the one problem with the said plan: If you center your entire strategy to make sure that that one fatal mistake never occurs, what happens if it does?

What happens if the Flames simply have to score?

Eh?

Xiangzhóu News:SPORTS

Red Dragons shine in two fixtures

Two matches full of tension and expectations, and two matches they delivered.
The Red Dragons, The national team has proven to cope with the pressure.

After two match days Kandorith managed to snatch 6 points, making it one of the most successful appearances on the World Cup so far, especially after the decline of football during the Ardon regime.
It seems like the Kandorese fans can finally forget the scandal of the last World Cup, where the team lost almost every match, leading to a preliminary defeat.
The fans both at home and following the team have been delighted with the results, especially after last night's match. Which ended in a narrow 3 - 2 victory against Pzetrovlaskia in the dying minutes of the game, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats and cheering for their time till the final whistle.

Méng appears to be one of the shining stars of the tournament already; with four goals on his name now. The young striker was delighted after we asked him for an interview after the match.

"It's an amazing feeling, to see the team playing with the full confidence and half the stadium behind us. I can't explain it. It's also amazing to have so many chances for goal, as I have been quite nervous the last days for my appearance on the World Cup, but the nervousness is finally fading away. The next matches we will give our one-hundred percent again and aim to give the fans a show and again show the nation why we are the best players of the nation." said the young striker.

Head coach Xíanjí praised his team and the performance they have shown; "Without doubt we are on the way of becoming the best national team Kandorith has ever had. This is of course the goal, next to qualifying. Our nation has had some dark times concerning football, scandals, decaying stadiums and of course utter shameful defeats. I am sure these young lads will perform better, the further they get, as they are a real tournament team. I have pressed on training for stamina, control and teamwork; they are showing all of these in perfection. Although the defending needs some work, as long as we outscore and outplay our opponent, we will be on the right tracks."

The next match versus Sandwich Territories will be the next match for the Kandorese team, and the match is expected to be explosive in both energy and excitement. Once again from the fans at home and even His Majesty The Emperor, we say "Jiayoú Kanduó" Let's do this Red Dragons! As we go onwards on the long road of becoming the best national team the nation has ever seen, with Méng on the tracks of becoming the best goalscorer of the nation.

Matchday 2: Kintratar 0–2 Mapletish

Postby Mapletish » Fri Mar 29, 2013 1:18 am

After hopping on a 3-2 win away to Gyatso-kai, the Lions were back into action again as they traveled to Kintratar to face Cole Kālu's side in the Kintratar Stadium. A second away outing for the Lions was certainly not what Janette wanted as her team would have to settle down once again as they arrive three days earlier to familiarised themselves with the atmosphere of Kintratar.

In a pre-match interview, team captain Gosta Esbjörn explained to the press about the team's situation in Kintratar. He was quoted as saying, "Just last afternoon, we had our usual training routine when the afternoon showers start hitting in, disturbing our training session. We had originally planned for a practice match to be played but it all seems to be in vain as we headed indoors for same keepy-ups."

As the team arrived at the Kintratar Stadium, they made their way straight to the dressing rooms as they arrived early to start on their warm-up drills. As the team arrived onto the pitch, fans and supporters gathered at the stands to catch a glimpse of the team. The players got on with their usual warm-up drills as Janette and her three coaches stood at the side for a brief discussion. Still in their track suits, the players went for a simple jogging session with Esbjörn leading the pack.

The start of the match neared and the Lions went back to the dressing rooms for a quick briefing as Janette looked to secure an important victory for the Lions to be in the best position at the start. The match was seen as a must win for Mapletish despite it being the first time, the Lions are facing Kintratar and the first time many of the players have set foot on the foreign land.

Janette replaced Junio and Di Natile before the start of the match to give way for Dennis Long and JH Morison as she looked to rotate the squad to let under-use players have a chance to play.

All the early momentum of the match belonged to the dominant Mapletish, Morison was the first to test David Stefansson in the hosts' goal with a low shot that was turned away at the near post.

The 27 year old then put Di Ai Jing in the clear with a clever ball over the top, but after bringing the ball down beautifully, the midfielder made a hash of her finish and blasted over the bar.

Dennis Long was then denied by an excellent challenge from Kevin Clise, before David was called into action again to divert a deflected Enkainia effort onto the post, as the Lions kept piling on the pressure on the home side as they started to break apart despite starting the match compacted.

With 24 minutes on the clock, Morison spurned a golden opportunity when he clipped right at David from point blank range with Denis also denied by the Kintratarish keeper from the rebound.

It all came down for the Lions here as it seem more mathematically that the Lions will end the first half frustrated, unable break the deadlock apart. However six minutes before the half time whistle was sound, Mapletish found the breakthrough when Gosta's exquisite cross was nodded in by Dennis despite the best efforts of David.

Mapletish continued with their early momentum as the home team attempted to cut out the Lions' attacking momentum. Despite their best efforts, the best of chances still managed to cut through the cracks in the Kintratarish defence.

Janette brought on Junio to replace the wasteful Morison just past the hour mark, with Di Natile soon to follow as Dennis made way for a double spearheaded attack on the go to keep Kintratar right on their toes anticipating the Lions.

Chances came as Junio made his first attempt on the goal, a neatly placed through pass by Jessie putted Junio through on goal. However the referee failed to let his chip shot goal stand despite it crossing the goal line and bouncing out of the goal. Annoyed by the ruling, Junio had no choice but to accept it as he jogged back to position.

A second golden chance came by with just over a quarter of an hour to go, David pulled off another fine save to deny Di Natile from point blank range, with Junio's rebound incorrectly chalked off for offside. A second wrong refereeing decision left the once again annoyed Junio in his nerves.

Despite that, Junio finally found his rightful goal as a scintillating combination of Ai Jing and Junio saw the latter dink the ball stylishly over David to finally wrap up the points for the visitors as they look to secure a second win in Group 12.

The win sees Mapletish sit joint third in Group 12 with Estope, as the fourth team to have recorded a perfect record so far.

San Mari-yes!
It had to be admitted that none of the squad... actually knew anything about Rikatan. Names had cropped up in their previous two matches, but they had no idea who they played for, or if Rikatan had a club system at all.
"Maybe they're part-timers?" suggested Dacia Mountain. Portia scoffed at this.
"Part-timers? Nahhh. You can't send... lawyers and economists into an arena with football pros! They'd get slaughtered!"
"Maybe they will get slaughtered," said Leyland quietly, and Dale chuckled.
Portia rolled her eyes. "No, there has to be professionalism. There's no point entering otherwise, is there? Anyway, they beat Sekouta... they beat someone, and technically on goal difference they beat us. I wouldn't underestimate them, especially not while they're at home. It could easily be us next."

"So, Rook," said Dale, airily. "I, uh, I hear you're seeing a shrink now."
"That's right," grunted Rook, daring him to make a challenge.
"No, I was just wondering what it's like. I've uh... been contemplating going myself."
Rook stared at the raffish midfielder, long and hard. "Are you winding me up?"
"With fists like yours, could I really afford to?"
Rook was forced to concede the point. "Well, it's like this. Basically it's just someone you just... you can trust, 'cause of the, uh, the..."
"Patient-doctor confidentiality thing?" prompted Portia, intrigued.
"That's right. Anyway, you just vent at her for a while and she like... won't judge you. And she scribbles out a form for some Prozac and you walk away feeling better."
Dale shrugged. "Sounds interesting, but I think I'll pass."
"Wasn't asking for you to join me," said the centreback, gruffly, and stomped off.
"Wonder what his deal is?" said Dale, well out of earshot. Portia only clicked her tongue.
"Whatever. As long as he's not bitching at or hitting us, I'm a happy lass. C'mon, get your pink bloody shirt on-"
"It's salmon!"

Mytannion 3 - 2 The Inevitable Syndicate
Mytannion: Kaitanen 22', 67' , v Tuhinju 39' / Syndicate: Mitchell 14' , Birch 78'
After a brilliant start, the Syndicate were up against a tough opponent in the form of Mytannion, world #19, which is our rank in reverse. The players went into the game not quite expecting to win, but that didn't stop them from scoring some good goals in the early game, with a brilliant corner taken by Pratt and fielded into the goal by Mitchell. Mytannion weren't going to take this lying down, however, and even after some key defensive play from midfielder Sean Lucas, the Mytannion side managed to score a vital goal in the 22nd. The goals kept on coming, and with a score of 3-1 just minutes before the end, Bradly Birch took it upon himself to score a last minute goal that just wasn't enough to secure victory. However, a good effort all round, and a sobering experience on just how high the level of play is here at the World Cup.

Chapter i. Negotiations
Chapter ii. Raiders of a Lost Art

An Inconceivable Truth
A Story of Syndicatian Climate Change
Chapter iii. Some Assembly Required
The Government had sent out an advert on the Datalink, unknown to other countries, claiming that The Forum needed Archaeologists for “A Rather Large Discovery”. The media was all over the advert, speculating as to what it could be. Some claimed the Syndicate knew how to clone dinosaurs, others assumed the government was planning a zombie invasion of Starblaydia. The truth was, as we know, much more relaxed.

“Right, Dr. Bones, we have a team assembled. Some of the best Syndicatian minds are now on the case. Agents from the SIA will be conducting field work, and we even managed to get the Syndicatian Chess Team involved as recon and intelligence, as their headquarters are in Pinehearth, and it got flooded during the ICC.”

Raymond Yarsley and Laura Verreau (who you should know if you keep up with Syndicate events) popped their heads around the door and introduced themselves.

“So, an expedition, eh? What are going to find? I've not been briefed yet...” Raymond shook Dr. Bones warmly by the hand, and took a seat in the hall that the government had set aside for Ariana to brief her new team.

“Right, ladies and gentlemen!” Bones began, greeted by several odd looking faces. “You may be wondering why I'm gathering you here today. Well, the Syndicate is in great danger of being wiped off the map, and we are going to fix that. Somewhere in the Great Calanian Desert is this...” A click was heard as a slide was shown on the projector. The picture was of an odd mahcine, that looked a little like a radio telescope, with several buttons, switches, pipes and goodness-knows-what on.

“This is The Meteoricon. It's a device that controls the weather, from the Dreamed Realm given many thousands of years ago to the ancient Ahlenfi people. And we are going to find it, and get it back.”

A hand was raised. It was Verreau's. She had a question.

“We don't know where it is, though, do we? So how are we going to find it?”

Bones sighed. She'd never had to deal with such simpletons before. “Well, I have reason to believe it's still in Ahlenfi. I've spoken to other historians, and they claim it may be found North of Khabu. The area around the famous Temple of Raresh. We believe the temple was either built to house the Meteoricon, or to worship it. Either way, we're going there!”

Yarsley shrugged. “I guess we better pack. So, remind me again – who is going?”

"None of you." Jones muttered. "We're sending our best agent out on the case. A man so secret, none of you even know he exists. His name? Craig Daniel."

"Craig Daniel? Oh, he sounds like a movie star!" Verreau said.

"Indeed. But he's the best agent we have. He can blend in to the fabric of the Ahlenfi people seamlessly - you know, he's in this room right now."

A man wearing a suit stepped out of the shadows. One of the first things Laura noticed about him was his rather handsome cheekbones.

"Indeed I am." said Craig Daniel, "And please, call me by my codename - Agent 9¾."

"Alright people!" Stephen Jones shouted in order to attract the attention of the team. His voice then reduced to a whisper. "Are you all ready to see the inner workings of the SIA?"

New and old meet at National Stadium

Yesterday's match had some people confused (the confusion might have resulted in either team forgetting to score, but the match analysis is saved until later). Ko-oren played Kericia, a nation with a government that is centuries older than the Ko-orenite government. But they have only played in the past two World Cups, with a total of three cycles, yet Ko-oren is old in the sense that we are in our ninth cycle with the last seven consecutively. Yet Kericia has played in World Cup 54, and Ko-oren's first World Cup was 'as late as' 55.

That was not the only confusing part of the match, the question who is new and who is old was left until the press conference. This problem had to do with the away team playing like it was the home team. Once upon a time, Kericia was named Kereca and it had a flag that certainly looks like a flag that might ring a bell.
Image
For those of you wondering: Left Ko-oren, Right Kereca
That, plus the fact that both names start with a K, and you can never understand stadium chants (seriously, Ko-oren could as well be Kerecia and vice versa), and you have a weird situation that both teams benefit from a home game situation.

As far as the match was concerned: it was a disappointing draw. But as we are used of this team, the expected victories are the ones that more often turn into draws and losses than wins... The only time
Ko-oren ever reached the playoffs when the team did manage to win this kind of games. One thing in this match could give us hope: the amount of chances. Instead of playing defensively as against Bearded Moose, the team did go for offense and scoring goals. But it seems like scoring goals is again going to be the 'thing' this tournament.

THE EMPIRE TIMES

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

1/12

First Name: Baden
Surname: Lakes
Squad Number: 10
Position: Striker
Club: Wilion by Sea
Town of Birth: Colnitia
Nation: Wedrom
International Appearances: 29
International Goals: 18

Bio: Baden Lakes is the inspirational captain of the Blouman Eagles with power, pace and a never say never attitude and he has consistently shown these attributes since entering the squad as Captain at the start of the 63rd World Cup qualifiers. Baden has won a number titles at a club and Empire level including the Imperial Cup and the Holchmain Super League title but a major international title is what still eludes him.

Baden began his career in football at the age of 14 when he was spotted by Northport FC scouts who quickly signed him up for their junior program. While there he continued to develop his skills and was impressive enough to be selected for the Wedrom U15 team. At the age of 18 he gained a spot on Northport's first team and impressed manager Samuel Delleor in the 10 minutes he did play so much that he was started the following game. After scoring a total of 11 goals in his debut season other teams took interest and he was sold off to Helioton where he helped them win their first trophy for 10 years with the ENC Paint trophy. Baden spent a further two years with the club before transferring to Wilion on Sea where he has gone from strength to strength helping the team to win the Holchman Super league consecutively. Baden has been apart of the Wedrom side since he was selected for their U15's side where he has continued to take his skills leading the U18 side to a runner up in the U18 Imperial Cup and winning the Imperial Cup last year. Baden found himself not only debuting for the first time in the 63rd World Cup qualifiers but also debuting as Captain and he lead from the front scoring in his first game. Baden continues this qualifying campaign as Captain and will be taking his strong leadership skills as he leads the team in their attempt to qualify for the 64th World Cup.

Phillip Garren was not happy. The 2-0 loss to Ossidiacqua was not a bad one, in fact, playing on the road against a team this close in the rankings was almost expected, but still. He addressed the team:

"Guys, that was not good. We needed to win that match, and we needed to win it badly. I realize this is a new position for us, being second seed in the group, but we can't afford to think that that guarantees victory. Over the next few days, the talking heads on ESPN and what's left of WASN will tell everyone why this loss does nothing to our plans, that we were on the road and that this was nearly expected, and at least two of them will make some kind of comparison between of Starblaydia. Let me make one thing perfectly clear: We. Are. Not. Starblaydia. Starblaydia lost to us, but they kept their heads and won the matches they were supposed to, we didn't, but Ossidiacqua will. We dropped two matches to Kishrael, ranked 314th, and blew it against Lymantatia. Ossidiacqua is not going to do that.

We've got to take a lesson from Starblaydia, and win every match we can from here on out. We have a chance to qualify this time, guys, and we're going to lose it if we get overconfident. The whole country has picked us to finish third, every expert who doesn't go down the West-Angola-is-Starblaydia route is jumping ship on us, saying this is another World Cup 60, and that we can't be trusted to hold a higher seed. We're going to prove them wrong, if we can keep our heads. Just remember, we're not going to win this spot because history had determined a parallel between us and Starblaydia, we've got to work very hard to overcome this. I need every one of you guys to stay focused, and not start thinking that we can win just because we're at home against a low ranking. We can definitely still manage second place, but it will not be easy, and I need you all to commit to getting there."

One by one, the players voiced their assent, and Garren dismissed them to the showers. Once they were gone, Isaac Warren stood and walked over to Garren, "Good speech."

"It had to be, we can't afford to lose focus again."

"That's not all we need to focus on Phil, you need to keep an eye on yourself. You remember what happened last time."

"Yes." During qualifying for the last World Cup, Garren had suffered a heart attack after the loss to Kishrael, hospitalizing him for several key matches in the opening leg.

"Just be careful, okay? Don't let your emotions boil over."

"I won't, thanks Isaac." Garren headed back to his office, letting out a sigh as he did, Luke, wherever you are, please hurry back.

"Look guys, I'm sorry. We had got no sleep, we played like dirty cowards on the pitch, and we lost 3-2 to an unranked team. Don't worry about the curfew or staying in hotels when we play home matches, eh."

"It's fine, coach"

"Yeah, no problem,"

"But anyways, our next game is against Yelvoldia. They're a puppet of Slembana, but we shouldn't take them lightly, as they have a rank, albeit a bit smaller than ours. But anyways. We need to talk strategy. Yves took himself out of this game with that red card, so I'm bringing Fernard Girard up to play with us. Artyom, you'll be starting. Now, this is our first home game of the qualifiers, so we've got to bring our top game."

"What's our strategy, coach?"

"Well, after studying the Yelvoldian team on tape from their last game, a 1-0 loss to Yesopalitha. I've decided our strategy is: Go slowly around the outside,"

"What the heck does that even mean?"

"Well, we'll have Savard and Allonts at the right and left wing of the pitch. Whenever the defense get the ball, they'll pass it around a bit to draw in the offense. Then we chip it to one of Savard or Allonts. Girard, you'll be right up in the middle of the pitch. When one of these guys gets the ball, they'll start to move, drawing the defense. This should leave you with a less clogged lane to the net. He'll pass it up to you, and you do your thing. If it doesn't work after the first half just play regular football,"

"Nice commitment," assistant manager Paul Leclerc said with a laugh.

"Well, we've gotta win the game,"

"True,"

"Just don't try anything like your crazy 'we can let the goalie and Girard score all the goals' like you did last cup against Bears Armed."

"Well, we almost won that game!"

"We lost 4-0,"

"Shut up, haha. But anyways, this is a home game, and we've gotta win her. If we can't beat teams lower than us, we'll have no chance against teams like Maklohi Vai, Northern Sunrise Islands, Jeruselem and Yesopalitha,"

Royales Defeat Yelvoldia 4-3
It was a warm, late spring day at Stade St-Pierre for Les Royales home opener. They entered the game 0-1-0, losing the opener to Rikatan 3-2. But now was a different story, as Les Royales took on the Yelvoldians at home. It was also "The Lac-Drouin Times Day" at Stade St-Pierre, and congrats to the people who got special Girard Giroux bobbleheads! Also, for all of you entered in the grand prize draw, a ticket to the World Cup Final, the winner is.....Pierre Latendresse, of Ile Perrot! Congrats Pierre! The second prize, tickets to 3 of Sicoutimont's home qualifing games went to....Jean-Luc Alexandre of Lac-Drouin! Congrats Jean-Luc! And third prize, a free subsciption to the Times and a Royales home kit signed by the whole team.....Anna Bolvier of Jouvier-sur-Lac! Congrats Anna! But back to the game. It began looking bad for Les Royales, in a 2-1 hole at the half due to goals from the badgers Connor Brown and Ben Ligerworth, and for the Sicoutians, Girard Giroux. Les Royales' strategy changed at halftime, and Stan Sarault scored in the 49th minute to even the game. Alex Gannot, moved up to mid at half, scored his third of the tournament, and Giroux would make the match 4-2. Brown would score for the Yelvoldians to make the score 4-3, but the game would end that way, giving Les Royales their first win of the World Cup Qualifing season. Fernard Girard replaced Yves Savard, who got a red card and 1-match ban for a nasty tackle in Sicoutimont's game against Rikatan. No word has been received from the SFA, but it is believed that he may possibly be suspended. Here's the box score, courtesy of http://www.footybets.scm!

World Cup Quals MD2

Les Royales next game is against Yesopalitha, in Yesopalitha. Can Les Royales beat the top-ranked team in the group? Tune into your television to find out! In the meantime, buy tickets for Sicoutimont's next home game, on Saturday, May 17, 2019, 7:30PM, @Stade St-Pierre, Sicoutimont vs Basque Socialist States!

BREAKING NEWS: Yves Savard Suspended 2 games for Dirty Tackle
The Sicoutian Press-Yves Savard has been suspended by the Sicoutian FA for a dirty tackle of Rikatan's number 3 in the first match of the World Cup qualifing campaign. Savard commited the foul in the 34th minute of a 3-2 Sicoutian loss. #3 left the match, and Savard was shown his second yellow of the game, followed by a red card. Due to the requirement of any red carded player missing the next game, Director Rene Rochefort, Assistant Director of Footballing Safety, Savard and Manager Marc Denis met Tuesday to determine if further discipline was required. Savard will now miss 2 games, against Yesopalitha and Maklohi Vai, both away, until his probable return to the pitch on May 17 against Basque Socialist States. May 9th's game against the Vaians will be a rematch of the Des Monts Ila Vai Cup.

Excitement ahead of May 4 Match
The May 4 match with Yesopalitha will be watched intently: May Fourth Day is a national holiday, commemorating the discovery of the lands now known as Sicoutimont. In an interview with Rene Rochefort, he said: "Yves commited a foul, and it is our right as the governing body of Sicoutian Football to ensure the safety of all players....Yves knows what he did was wrong, and apologizes to any fans he may have hurt because of the incident," Savard was the first Sicoutian footballer to ever recieve a red card. Speaking about the May Day match, Rochefort said: "It might be the most viewed match ever in Sicoutimont....on a national holiday, against one of the best teams in the world....we're expecting numbers through the roof," But another problem might occur due to the May Day Match: Due to the national holiday, rowdy fans such as the Platoon of Purple might make an appearance at the match, even though Yesopalitha is located a long ways away from home. The Platoon of Purple are english-speaking fans from the northwest of Sicoutimont, near the border with Valladares' Westlands territory. The POP first attended matches during the WC63 campaign, and are notorious for rowdy cheering and general hooliganism at matches. They attend most Sicoutian home games, and due to the national holiday, might go overseas for this match. Certain members have been banned from domestic stadiums in Sicoutimont. It is unknown whether they will head overseas or not. On a lighter note, on May 4, a massive telescreen will be put up in Square-Rouge in Lac-Drouin to watch the match. If you're heading out to the fireworks display in your town or city, be sure to tune into your radio to listen in to the game! Or, you could always check The Lac-Drouin Times Tuesday paper for full details of the game! We won't be printing May 4 for obvious reasons.

An Adventure In Old Guard - Part Three

Jon Quillisi and Dravid Scott were both sitting at a table in a small rented office space in central Oldem, just 20 metres from the near empty dock. They were waiting for one Clement Ashley with a business proposal which could give their lives new meaning and hopefully make Old Guard a slightly more interesting place. They heard the dilapidated lift begin to creak into life, and after a agonising wait of a long series of creaks and squeaks, they heard the lift doors open. Three seconds later a quite harried looking Clement Ashley strode into the room, newspaper tucked into his arm and satchel slung over his shoulder.

Before either of Dravid and Jon were able to say hello, Clement had erupted in a cloud of rage.

"HAVE YOU SEEN THIS?!?" he spluttered, throwing down the newspaper on the table, "UTTER NONSENSE!". Dravid reached over to picked up the newspaper, but it was seized by Clement before he had the chance, Dravid only being able to make the title. Of course, the Apoxian Word.

"Listen to this!" he said, still angry, but not shouting, "The splendid chaps from the national football team played those not so reputable gentlemen from Silar on the old football pitch today. Whilst not being quite the contest that a good game of rugger is, it was still quite a spectacle, seeing as both teams managed to score, which I thought was rather sporting." Clement looked up briefly here, but ploughed on before the others were able to interject,

"In the end it was a rather boring draw, not like a good old spot of rugger, they never end in draws, except for that one time when we played the chaps from Underhill Prep in Dwile, and it was a thoroughly momentous occasion, I believe the score was 4-4." at this point Clement couldn't continue.

"I've a right mind to walk up to Victor Atrastain and tell him where he can shove his "rugger", I mean, you can't even get a score of 4-4 in rugby! What has the Apoxian Word fallen to if it is putting out drivel like that!" he finished, red in the face, and most likely sweating a bit. Jon was the first who was able to reply, after a few seconds the shock had receded and the powers of speech had returned.

"Hello to you to Clement, why don't you take a seat?" he said, indicating the other chair that was around the table, which Clement gratefully took. After pulling a water bottle from his bag and taking a sip, he seemed ready to continue.

"I apologise for the outburst, I'm just appalled to say that I worked for that newspaper at one point!" he said, more looking quite apologetic. Dravid smiled,

"No problem, we're all passionate about something. Anyway, I expect you're interested in hearing why we wanted to meet you here today." Clement nodding, now looking calm enough to have a normal conversation. Dravid turned to Jon, who knew the most about this and who's idea it had been.

"Well, after meeting you in the pub last week we got thinking and decided it would be good to do something to alleviate the boredom, right?" he said, Clement nodding. "Well, after you left, I had an idea, we could bring a bit of culture and interest to Old Guard. We could create a newspaper!" Clement's face lit up, my God he loved journalism.

"I realised we had all the components. I have contacts in the industry and inside knowledge of how to run a newspaper from my time spent in the industry after my retirement from football. Dravid, let's be frank here, has the money, so he will be able to fund the operation for a while. And in you, my friend, we have a top-notch journalist who is ready and willing to take on cases. There we have a formula. Will you join us?" he finished, studying Clement face, although he already thought he knew the order.

"Will I join you? Of course I will! Oh thank you so much, fantastic!" he exclaimed, and continued proclaiming his joy for around 5 minutes afterwards. Jon leaned over to Dravid about two minutes in;

"We've found ourselves a character haven't we?" he chuckled, with Clement still harping on in the background.

"Indeed we have," laughed Dravid back. After he had calmed down for the second time in the meeting, Jon continued.

"We will operate as a team at the top. Dravid will be the Chairman of the paper, and slightly more distant from the actual running. I will be the CEO of the company, and mainly in charge of matter which aren't being published like pay, discipline and all that. And then you will be the Head Editor." Clement beamed, before frowning slightly.

"But.. where will we be based? How will it be printed? And we can't run a newspaper with 3 people!" Sensing Clement's worry, and knowing he had the answers, Jon was quick to calm Clement's nerves.

"Not a problem. We were so sure you'd except, that we went to the liberty of renting office space. In fact, you sitting in it right now! Welcome to your office! With regards to printing, as part of his plans to grow the economy of Old Guard, Iskander the Third has spent £1.2 million on installing a top notch printing facility not 1 mile from here. Yesterday, we received confirmation that they were ready, and that we could use them. And for finding staff, well that's what we're going to do now!
We've put out an advert, and candidates will begin to reply nearly immediately looking for work. Then it will be up to us to sort through them and get this show off the ground!" As they stood up and began heading out of the office, Clement continued speaking a whole load of nonsense and ideas for the running of the paper, most of which went straight over Jon and Dravid's heads. It had begun.

Ambubwe rose from his crouch and surveyed the horizon. Still nothing, he and his gang had seen no animals for the whole day and he was beggining to despair. He had found the elephant's spoor after two hours of searching, but it was a cold trail. The dung he had just removed his fingers from was dry and crumbled to the touch, a sure sign that the elephant were far from where he stood now. "Well baas?" asked one of his men, Ambubwe did not answer and just continued to trek into the high grass ahead of him. Sighing his men followed, they were used to his mood swings; one minute he was cheerful and even if they had not eaten for days would be first with a joke, but other days he was unaproachable and would not utter a word even if they had felled the mightiest elephant. They guessed it was something to do with the football for they knew he was a passionate fan and when glancing at the newspaper they had seen Kalumba had lost their first game in the World Cup. They didn't understand his reaction, all of them were Kalumbans but none of them cared about the country and they thought that Ambubwe didn't either. But hoping to change his mood one of them headed off to the nearest General Store to see if the results had improved.

As he strode into the long grass Ambubwe spotted another spoor, but this was merely a lone zebra. However he felt perhaps the meat would invigorate the men and possibly draw in a lion. He had given up on following the elephant spoor, it was too old and had the elephants been on the move they would be 30 mile distant and still moving. There was no watering hole in that direction or any where the elephants could feed, they would not stop until they had reached the Bilto River 80 miles further on. With this in mind he aligned himself with the rear of the zebra hoofprint and lay down next to it. He cursed violently in Tsonga as he saw the rate the sand was falling into the body of the print. The zebra had surely past here hours ago and would be too far distant now for them to ever dream of catching. Perhaps his gods had finally taken their vengence on him for killing the elephant and rhino without their permission. He began to shake at this thought, the last man from his tribe to be forsaken by the gods had withered away in just days from a fine figure of a warrior to a husk. Just one week and he was dead, how long would it take the gods to take his shrivelled body?

At that moment the rest of his gang arrived weapons at the ready, fearing some misfortune haad befallen their leader. He waved them down and sighed "We won't be hunting today, there are no animals for miles. The whole vlei is dead, it is perhaps time to cross the Bilto maybe there we will find the great herds." As he finished speaking his men began to cut the bush around them to make a temporary resting ground. The trek to the Bilto was long and they would need their rest. As this process was going on around him, the gangs thief returned and handed Ambubwe the newspaper and then joined the others at their work, swinging his panga with vigour to clear a sleeping area.

The Herald: Sport Today

Report by Bruce Mtwetwe

Victory for Kalumba. Despite early fears it would appear that we will not be finishing this tournament without any points, and may in fact manage to avoid finishing bottom of the group. Last night we recorded a 2-0 victory against Zackalantis in Kahali National Stadium, in front of a sell out crowd. Even more promising is the fact that despite the vast number of people, BAPL terrorists made no attempt to commit an atrocity in spite of their repeated threats to do so. While increased security would have helped, last night justified the governments decision to return to international sport and shows Kalumba is on the mend.

Back to the football; the match began in a raucous atmosphere as the 22,000 home fans sang their hearts out at the national anthems and then roared the team forwards. The atmosphere was perhaps helped by the fact the opposition brought fewer than 100 fans and they were unable to cheer their team on, as every chant they began was drowned out by the home fans. And soon the away fans had little to cheer.

After Davis had hit the bar with a header from an Abouto cross, Ollie Roberts picked the ball up on the edge of the centre circle and began one of the mazy runs that he has become famous for. He cut inside his first challenge, then wrong footed the next man to try and tackle him with a smart stepover. Facing only the defenders now he put his head down and picked up the pace, beating the first man with this alone and jumping over a despairing slide tackle from the remaining centre back. The keeper came blundering out and Roberts poked the ball between his legs and into the net. Tearing his shirt off he leapt into the crowd and the who stadium went crazy, Kalumba were back! 7 Minutes gone and we were a goal up.

The rest of the 1st half continued much in the same vein, with Kalumba laying siege to the oppositions goal and creating chance after chance. Roland Grezlak, a surprise starter on the left wing, had the best of these chances; scuffing an effort when clean through, then heading straight at the keeper from another excellent Abouto cross. While the Zackalantisans had shown little threat, Kalumban fans looked worried at the break. Often they saw their side dominate a match and go on to lose, as they failed to take their chances.

But manager Davies eemed little concerned and sent out the same team for the second half, and thankfully they continued their dominance with Cheeter having a strong effort pushed wide by the keeper almost straight from the restart. The resulting corner saw Van Harniggen crash a header against the crossbar and Anderson somehow bundle the rebound wide at the nearpost.

But the tone had been set for the remainder of the game and finally 'The Tortoises' capitalised. Cheeter had been replaced by Rowlatt late on, who exchanged quick passes with his husband Roberts, and burst into the box. Before he could shoot his legs were cynically taken from behind by the left centre back, and the referee showed him a straight red cards in spite of the wild protests he had won the ball.

Davis then placed the ball on the spot and took his usual three steps back and turned to face the keeper, who attempted to make himself big. But Davis was an expert from 12 yards and ingnoring the goalkeepers arm flailing routine, stepped up and stroked the ball straight down the middle of the goal past the keepers legs as he threw himself to his right. Davis raised his arms in celebration and was mobbed by his team mates as it became aparent they had won the game. Before the opposition could kick off the referee blew the final whistle and the crowd went wild, but just managed to refrain from invading the pitch.

Ambubwe's face was filled with a huge grin as he imagined the scene, and darkened again as he wished he could have been there either in the crowd or on the pitch. But a win, and Roberts scoring. He remembered the great run which Roberts had created to get Aaron Yuill get sent off in the semi-final of the BoF all those years ago. What a player he was, and if he kept up that form maybe Kalumba coud win a few more games. Laying the paper aside he rested his head against a tree and stretched out his arms, and quickly recoiled. He had touched something moist in the long grass next to him, and now explored it with the barrel of his gun fearing to find a slick backed cobra in the bush. But his fears soon became elation, it was no poisonous snake but a fresh mountain of elephant dung. Alerting his men he set off at a trot, maybe the gods loved him after all.

Mtuwa was sat back in his office gazing once again at the hated TV screens. He was in a foul mood and the fact Norman was late angered him even more. At least Norman didn't have to live out here, he could at least have the courtesy to arrive on time. But he tried to calm his anger against his old friend, and turn it against his bosses. How stupid they were, if only they would listen to him!

The previous week he had driven out to where Norman had reported a fire and examined the ground to try and find any sign of it's origin. It was in a baobob tree that he found it, the half burnt sports page from the same day. This proved that the fire was man made and recent, and the lack of tracks proved whoever had started it did not want to be found. And that far out in the bush it could only be poachers starting a fire, the tribes did not use fire in these saced lands, and tourists would not have covered their tracks. If it was someone lost trying to attract attention they would have stayed by the fire and kept it burning. But would the bosses let him lead out a search party? No. They said it was probably a paper caught in the wind and they couldn't justify sending out a search party on such minimal evidence. Wilson raged at this stupidity, there was no hope of finding the poachers now they had a weeks lead on him.

He was brought out of his angry thoughts by the dial up tone on the office computer, finally he thought and logged onto OTLWTL. He hadn't heard the score from last nights match and was hoping for some good news.

On The Lash With The Lads

What a win! The boys were on fire last night, and even a neutral would have to admit that we deserved to win that game by more than a miserly two goals. But who cares about the score it is the honour and pride that matter. We won, we will not go home without any points and if Zackalantis keep playing like that we won't finish bottom either.

Now don't get me wrong we deserved to win last night, but it was more to do with the oppositions incompetance than our own ability. Yes Roberts was on fire and deserved the Man of the Match award, and probably more than one goal, but would he have done so well against a decent defence? The newspapers seem to think that performance will be a building block for a mid-group finish, but let us remember their are many far better sides in the group and we need to work a lot harder if we want to beat them.

Now for what you are really here for: Tales of our drunken antics before and after the match. We began in the usual string of pubs on Captain's Avenue leading up to the stadium, and this is after a bottle or two of spiritous liquor each at my house, and were quickly thrown back onto the street by enraged publicans as we filled their establiments with; expressive language, vomit, in copious amounts, fighting gentlemen and broken furniture. Thankfully the police were the usual bunch, including the big brother, and they just moved us on too the stadium where after some difficulty we found our seats, just in time to stand up again for the national anthem.

The game passed without incident, baring bodily returning a steward to his comrades after he tried to kick a few of us out for smoking and consuming alcohol 'within sight of the pitch', poor sod must have been new. The only other moment worhty of note was being held back by a wall of stewards from celebrating on the pitch at the final whistle, and then we were chucked back onto the street and stumbled towards the city centre for more drink.

And it was here the final excitment occured. We bumped into their fans, who were foolish enough to try a bit of banter with us. And banter soom became a barney, which as you have already guessed became a bit of a one sided beating. Got to hand it to their lads though they were a brave bunch and gave their best, a few of them taking quite a few with us, myself included. And this is why I must apologise for their being no obituary this week, as I have spent the night sleeping on a beef steak to try and get the swelling down. I promise to honour the fallen next edition.

Mr Spleen

O, the views of Mr Spleen in no way reflect the views of Kalumba and should be ignored completely.

Wilson smiled as he read this, he would have some leave coming up in a few weeks and hoped to join his old buddies in a frenzy of football, fighting, fags and booze. And his smiled broadened as he heard the whine of an approaching aero-engine. Walking outside he was in time to see Norman land the biplane and leap out. "Wilson" he shouted "Somethings up!"

"What's wrong Norm?" asked Mtuwa as he dashed to meet the pilot, who was clutching a map and gesturing excitedly at it.

"That fire, it's definatley man made and I am sure I have found the culprits" he replied as they entered Wilsons office. Spreading the map out on the low table he pointed at a small green patch. "That vlei is normally clear at this time of the year. No food, water or anything. Yet when I pass it there is a clearing, and no approach tracks. No elephat lying down caused that, someone has cleared it and moved on."

"Thanks Norm, I will get onto the bosses straight away and tear them a new one. Stay in touch, we might need you when we go and find these bastards.

"Will do Wilson, I must get off and alert Mobisbo and his boys at the main station."

Wilson waved him off and picked up his phone. He knew he was right and felt anger and excitment build in his belly. He hated poachers, but he lived for the chase and he knew soon enough the chase would be on and the lives of his elephants depended on him reaching these poachers soon.

The Sova Empire experienced their first defeat in the World Cup in the first match by a score of 1-0 vs. Nekoni.

The Pessimist: Well, that's just AWESOME. We lose to a sub-100th ranked team and we can't even score a goal?!?! CLEARLY we don't need to suffer the humiliation and must withdraw from the tournament at once.

The Optimist: Give MB time, and she'll start scoring some huge goals. They are ranked a good 20+ spots in front of us, so I'm not too worried right now about the status of our team. Besides, ZP only let one goal go by, so way to go for him.

Coaches thoughts: "Maybe a -5 modifier wasn't a good idea after all..."

In the next game, excellent defense forced Lalo Limahina to a 0-0 tie. It was even said that MB shot the ball with only seconds left and it just missed wide of the net.

The Pessimist: REALLY?!?! No goals in 2 games? Where is the offense? We can't even score against a nation that I can't even pronounce? Another opportunity to beat a sub-100th ranked team and we blew it. I can't believe how my nation is doing so terribly. Withdraw immediately to save us the embarrassment.

The Optimist. WOO, did you see that amazing diving catch that CD made in the 62nd minute? CD is a game saver, I bet she'll be the reason why we get some wins in the future. It's nice how we learned our mistakes from the first game and we didn't lose to a slightly better team. I believe that our team will get better with time, and we stay in the tourney. Besides, we don't actually have much choice once we're in.

The starters for the next match will be:
Strikers: HS----MB-----EW
Midfield: TH---TO-----GS
Defense: BH---CD----BP---CH
Goal: ZP

Saintland dominates Zwangzug 3-0

(SP) In their first home international match ever, the Sanctii controlled the match from start to finish, sending Zwangzug down to defeat. A sold-out Royal Stadium crowd of 62,383 witnessed the 3-0 victory by their Kingdom's National Team. If there were 62 thousand Sanctii in the stands, there had to be 100 thousand outside of the stadium for hours before this match. Indeed, the entire Kingdom of Saintland had stopped for their match against Zwangzug. Only Customs, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force were seemingly still working during the match. "I'm pleased with the National Team's performance so far. They have not been defeated yet and, God willing, will not be defeated until they secure qualification into the World Cup. I'm especially proud of the Prince for the job he has done leading the team. I know he remembers that the job isn't done yet. My Kingdom's National Team still has 16 matches ahead of them. If we keep winning, we can qualify for the World Cup." - King Paulus XV

Prior to the start of the match, there was a long ceremony, which was unannounced to Zwangzug. The famous Cantus Virginum sang the National Anthem. The Royal Air Force flew over the stadium. Then, the match started. In the 3rd minute, Zwangzug's Penny Consky-Bock put the ball out around midfield for a throw in. Prince Andreas took the throw, as usual. This time, he tossed it long, finding Petrus Mamilius. Mamilius passed to Silvester Flaccus just outside of the box. Flaccus hit a perfect cross, finding Stephanus Vagionius. Vagionius booted it in for an early goal.

In the 12th minute, Saintland threatened again. Prince Andreas had the ball and, seeing that nobody was open, decided to take a long shot. His shot was on target and Joshua Farthing barely kept it out. Prince Andreas hit a corner, but it was headed away and the attack broke down. Zwangzug went on the counter attack. Soon, Yuuki Nakano was alone against Alessandro Seius. Seius guessed right and saved the shot. He kicked it long and straight to Paulus Flaccus. Flaccus headed it to Prince Andreas. The Prince found Silvester Flaccus and Flaccus booted a shot at the goal. It was blocked by the keeper. Stephanus Vagionius charged at it and sent it back at the goal. It was deflected again. This time, Petrus Mamilius ran at it and booted it into the post. Brett Chrowder ended up with possession and the ball was safely out of the scoring area.

In the 30th minute, Petrus Mamilius said something to Patricia Eliot and she fouled him, earning herself a yellow card. Prince Andreas took the free kick and sent it over the wall, but into the hands of the keeper. Nothing had come out of that free kick. In the 38th minute, Eliot would redeem herself somewhat by hitting a long pass, which set up a shot by Antje Kurzmann-Tremme. Kurzmann-Tremme's shot would be saved by Seius. It appeared that the Sanctii would take their 1 to nil advantage into the half as added time approached.

However, that was not to be. Instead, the Sanctii quickened the pace toward the end of the half as they passed the ball back and forth, moving ever closer to the box. Petrus Mamilius sent a pass into the box, which found Prince Andreas. The Prince had a clear look at goal and he hit a perfect shot, putting it into the top corner on the right side. Saintland led 2 to nil as the referee blew his whistle for halftime.

During the interval, Cantus Virginum came out for the halftime show. The girls in the crowd screamed while everybody else either went to the concession stands or sat in their seats politely not saying anything. Fortunately, there were no other incidents this time around.

If Zwangzug had hoped for a different second half, they were disappointed. To start the 2nd half, the Sanctii went on the attack once again, with a shot by Nicolaus Poenius being knocked out for a corner. Prince Andreas hit it straight to Vagionius, but the striker headed it over the bar for a goal kick. So it went for much of the 2nd half.

In the 69th minute, that all changed. Lucas Aufidius hit a long pass and found Prince Andreas. The Prince faked a pass to Vagionius, losing the defender that was marking him. Prince Andreas charged at goal and placed it low and toward the middle. Farthing was thinking high and right, so the shot sailed into the back of the net. Saintland led 3 to nil.

Prince Andreas decided to bring in the Jucundius brothers at that point and remove the Flaccus brothers, as the Sanctii switched to a 7-1-1-1 formation. At this point, they just decided to run out the clock. There was no use trying to score even more when the match was already won. An uneventful final 20 minutes followed, as the Sanctii remained in the lead for a 3 to nil victory. "When I looked at their team, I knew they were intimidated by us. They were intimidated by the atmosphere. That was exactly what we sought to achieve. It was over before it started. When I looked at saw female players on the pitch, I knew they weren't very good and we definitely weren't going to go easy on them." - Ioannes Poenius

After this 2nd matchday, the Sanctii are tied for 1st place in Group 2 with Soviet Canuckistan. Today, Audioslavia was held scoreless by Spagbogia, so it is quite possible that the Sanctii really are the best team in Group 2. Fittingly, the Kingdom of Saintland's National Team will travel to face Soviet Canuckistan tomorrow. Soviet Canuckistan is ranked 78th in the world, so this will be an important test for the Sanctii. Be sure to tune in on Royal One to see this match live.

The flight home for the Sanctii after their victory over Spagbogia had gone off without anything unusual happening. Arriving in the Kingdom of Saintland, they were greeted with a hero's welcome by a few thousand of their countrymen. Upon arriving in the Kingdom, they did not go home. Rather, they went to the local library to use the computer.

Logging on to Sanctustube, the team sat back and watched Zwangzug's first match, the 2-1 victory over Queer Poco el Mono Ara.

Andreas Inventius - These guys aren't that good.

Nicolaus Poenius - They just keep getting lucky out there. Those players from Queer Poco el Mono Ara don't have their heads in the match.

Stephanus Vagionius - That defense is very flawed.

Prince Andreas - Don't take this team lightly. Their country used to be a major power.

Josephus Flaccus - When was that?

Prince Andreas - A long time ago. This current team has only played 1 international match.

Lucas Aufidius - Josephus, if we take them lightly, we might not get 3 points.

Prince Andreas - Lucas is right. This team is competing in the World Cup. It is better to overestimate your opponent's talent than to underestimate it.

The players went home after they finished film study, spending the night with their families. The following morning, they arrived at Royal Stadium and were welcomed by around 100 thousand of their countrymen.

Josephus Flaccus - What is going on here?

Prince Andreas - The people of our Kingdom are here to welcome us to Royal Stadium.

Matthaeus Belaeus - I hope Zwangzug is intimidated by this sight.

Prince Andreas - Don't worry about that. They will be. By the way, be prepared for a delayed start.

Andreas Inventius - Why might that be?

Prince Andreas - My father scheduled around a half hour worth of ceremonies to purposely delay the start time. He says it'll help throw off the opposition.

Josephus Flaccus - Long live the King.

All of them together - Long live the King.

The team entered the stadium and waited around for the scheduled kickoff. Both teams were on the pitch when the ceremonies started.

Prince Andreas - I told you my father planned some ceremonies.

Stephanus Vagionius - Good move. We want our inexperienced opposition to be intimidated.

Cantus Virginum began to sing the National Anthem.

Petrus Mamilius - Why do they have to be here?

Prince Andreas - Princess Maria likes them and my father wants his little girl to be happy.

Stephanus Vagionius - Somebody needs to teach these ladies how to sing. They're ruining the National Anthem.

Prince Andreas - Keep quiet about that. My father was furious with Petrus for a long time after he criticized their lack of talent.

Stephanus Vagionius - I know that. Sometimes your father does things that make no sense.

Prince Andreas - He cares about his little girl so much. That's what is clouding his judgment there.

Finally, Cantus Virginum stopped "singing" and the Royal Air Force flew over the stadium.

Silvester Flaccus - I hope the Royal Air Force didn't send all their planes here.

Prince Andreas - My father wouldn't let them. Rumor has it that some foreigners are trying to smuggle weapons to Feministvs Sanctvsterra.

Georgius Catiotus - That is awful. That would be the last thing those Infernus-bound lunatics would need.

Stephanus Vagionius - God help us if they ever get their hands on weapons.

Prince Andreas - They won't. My father is about to increase the size of our armed forces.

Paulus Flaccus - Good. There are too many unemployed young men in our Kingdom right now and we need all the forces we can get to keep weapons out of the hands of the Godless terrorists.

Prince Andreas - The situation is under control.

Stephanus Vagionius - I hope so.

Soon, the match started. As fate would hold it, the Sanctii would be victorious by a score of 3 to nil on this day, setting up a showdown with Soviet Canuckistan for 1st place in the group on the following match day. Things were going right for the Sanctii early on in this qualifying campaign.
