Yeah, not impressed. Sorry. No, I'm actually not sorry.

So as to get back on topic, what about women in the air force? They've been in combat roles for a while in other nations' air forces.

You can't put women in the navy; Their breasts would weigh down all the ships and submarines.

Holy smeg. I never realised the US (and a quick search reveals UK, too) military blocked women from active combat. I thought we were past the 1950's?

http://usmilitary.about.com/od/army/a/afpt.htm

Physical fitness standards for women in the military are lower than those for men.

In my age group for example, for a bare minimum passing score of 60:

2 Mile Run: Males-17:00, Females-20:30
Pushups: Males-39, Females-17

Only the situp score chart is the same for both genders.

I would sure love to be able to stop in the middle of my run for a 3 and a half minute smoke break, and to do less than half as many pushups and still pass IN THE NAME OF EQUALITY!!

You just want an excuse to be sexist, and these days downright 1913 sexism is too taboo even for conservatives. So obviously, you make up some bullshit excuse not to allow women in the military.

Agreed. The standards should be equal across the board. However there should be no discrimination amongst those who pass.

That needs to be changed. Women can definitely handle what men can. I've seen it.
I have the feeling that this is only because of gender stereotypes and a need to protect those delicate little beings we call women.

I Don't know how it is the US army. In the UK the Physical fitness test had different scores for men and women, but the COMBAT fitness test was Gender-Equal.

Did someone mention 1913.

This is what was happening in 1913. Its educational and about women fighting in wars.

Two very short videos which will show women can fight.

The real question is whether they will be raising the standards for women up to the men's level. Because if not, then the other posters are correct, they will be lowering the readiness of our combat forces for the sake of PR and "gender equality!"

NO ONE should be put in the way of violence, but I think that adult men and women both should have a right to volunteer to do whatever service they can provide for their nation. There isn't a draft anymore, so why don't women volunteer for their own combat units?
