from a page in a worn out notebook packed tightly in J.J. Erickson’s suitcase

Notes to self:
- Never let Oren take a penalty. The ushers are still mad at us.
- Lilly is still the only player on the team who knows where she is on the pitch at all times. Address this asap.
- Make sure Vince doesn’t kill anyone while he’s on the pitch. Remind him that if he falls try to fall into the opposition. Related: monitor Hikari’s ankle to make sure it’s okay.

Okay, well, today wasn’t the best day at practice.

Now I’m not saying that these kids are clueless, because some of them genuinely have a good idea about what they are doing, but considering our international reputation is at stake, and considering that these players have supposedly been trained with much higher levels of competition than I ever was, this is disgusting and pathetic McRibs is absolutely horrendous out there. Between him and Vin, well, we are going to butcher some knees out there. This is not the type of defense that is going to scare people.

And I have to say, it is a little strange to be here with them. I can hear them now, we’ve basically taken over this floor of the hotel, and the walls are not that thick. Thankfully I don’t think we’ve gotten to the point where the lack of privacy is going to be an issue, but it’s still incredibly apparent that I’m over a decade older than most of them. And yet, I’m not quite old enough to carry that clout of authority that they’re used to. Especially since I’ve never even been to Starblaydia before this week, and we there are three players who managed to make it to third place four years ago. Not to mention that Lilly is living abroad now. I’m thankful to have her on the team, of course, but it’s a bit difficult to keep authority. I think I’m going to have to find a place to go out at night, though, to establish a bit of separation from the rest of the team. Of course, then the deal of managing their curfews by myself comes up…

I still cannot fathom why our country is so fucked up as to not have a single assistant here with me. It’s going to be embarrassing going to play the match needing to have one of these kids stand next to me holding my scouting reports and shit while they’re also supposedly one of my reserves. I think I’ll have Fass get on it, he seems like a reasonable guy. And not really talented enough to get on the pitch unless there’s some emergency.

At least we’ll be in Jhanna for the entire group stage. Although our group easily looks like the group of death to me. I mean, in terms of world rankings, the lowest ranked team is Ko-oren, who are 59th? What the hell is that! And then the other three teams are all teams that qualified for the World Cup?! This is a ridiculous task. Not to mention, after our first match against Licentiapacisterra, we have to play against robots. How the hell am I supposed to scout against a team that was built, who have never been exposed to any international football before? They might have lasers! How do you defend against lasers?! Or… chain saws? I don’t even know. At least they’ll have to have played a match before we see them. But again, I don’t even have anyone here who will help me break down game tape to prepare for the team. And I don’t even have anyone to talk these things over with. And I see these teams here with their instantaneous communication with their home nations. Saying how it’s ridiculous that we still communicate by “snail-mail.” As if it’s my choice that Kiryu-shi doesn’t have the infrastructure to have internet everywhere. Not to mention freaking robots.

Oh well. At least, you know, this team seems to be getting along well. Which is something. It could be a lot worse to try to be dealing with training, match preparation, and handling a bunch of angry youth. And at least there is no one on the team who is a Quee sympathizer. That is not something I’m looking forward to when I return to committee life after the end of the tournament… Ah well.

Okay, and for tomorrow, I need to try and reenforce two things:
- Try and get the players to understand that as much as we like to attack down the right side with Lilly as the playmaker from behind, we have enough talent in the midfield and forwards to be able to use Lilly as a decoy, the threat of a threat, and have a relatively multi-faceted attack. It’s true we shouldn’t really plan on attacking down the left side, but we can’t just keep on feeding it out to the right wing either. Too predictable.

- Let Megumi relax and ease into the match. If she doesn’t have too much responsibility, all the better. I have to make sure the defenders aren’t looking for her to command the formation, and make sure that they aren’t expecting her to be very vocal. They need to communicate between themselves completely seamlessly, I don’t want her to take on too much in this tournament. And that goes for the rest of the team, too.

And, well. The day after that we’ll be at the home of Jhanna City.

Good thing this mini-fridge is fully stocked.

The Pony Republic of Equestrian States
National U-21 Soccer Team - Di Bradini Cup 24 Roster

Team Background
The Equestrian States' U-21 team will be making its international debut in the 24th edition of the Di Bradini Cup, being hosted in the nation of Starblaydia. In order to give its U-12 team additional experience on the international stage, the National Equestrian Sports Council (NESC) has opted to send them to the tournament alongside those members of the Equestrian national team that are still under the age of 21 after the last World Cup.

The team was sent to the Greg Jackson Charity Cup in a tournament that the NESC was willing to throw away. However, the fillies and colts of the team performed extraordinarily well, advancing to the quarterfinals ahead of several reserve and U-21 squads (and oddly enough, a U-1923 team). Though the team fell to eventual runners-up Darmen, the team's victories provided a source of entertainment for many as the young ponies of the Equestrian States creamed a couple of national teams.

When the NESC was determining a team to compete in the Brevity Challenge Cup II, they decided to send the foals once more. Surprisingly, the team drew twice in the group stage before falling against Princess Beatrice Island. Relegated to the Copper Plate Tournament (for teams finishing in the bottom third of group play), the colts and fillies won three straight to capture the Copper Plate and shock quite a few other teams along the way.

"Ice baths and blueberries, boys. Ice baths and blueberries," Jonah said as he exited the room. The team had just returned from their match against Mesoland, and they were exhausted.

Adrian Tolmeki surveyed the room and plopped himself down in a red armchair. After ninety-three long minutes of near-continuous playing, he was ready to quit. The rest of his teammates followed suit, all of them sitting down on various sofas and articles of furniture, except for Daniel Artémis, who grabbed a towel and walked into the changing room. "I'll take the first ice bath," he said. "We're all doing one."

Pierré Benlizar snorted. "Monks," he said to himself, and opened a magazine.

"That was a nice goal, P," piped up Enzo from across the room. Tolmeki sighed to himself. Enzo hadn't realized that Benlizar hated nicknames of any sort. In fact, he hated names. He prefered you just shout, "Hey!" whenever you wanted to talk to him.

Pierré glanced at Enzo. "Anyone ever tell you you're a good-looking guy, Enzo?" he said.

"Uh... not really, no," Enzo said, confused.

"That's because you're not." Pierré said, and went back to his magazine. Armin, who was sitting behind him, sniggered.

"Oh... okay," Enzo said, after a second. He turned to Tolmeki. "But your goal! Man, I wish I could score like that! That was amazing! The way you just spun it through that guys legs! I mean-"

"Kid, do you always suck dicks like this, or is it only when you play football?" Pierré asked. Ignoring the fact, of course, that the two were the same age.

"Stop. Just stop." Lifa Eries shook his head. "Just eat the blueberries, Pierré."

Pierré turned on him. "Hey, look, I respect you, but... don't tell me what to do, okay? Don't be a piece of shit like that."

"I'm not telling you what to do..." Lifa said. "You just have to stop causing problems when - "

"See? You're doing it again," Pierré said. He swiped with his hand and the bowl of blueberries went flying. "You're a pretentious little shit, you know that? You're like a mom. I can't stand all your yapping."

"Dumbass!" Lifa was on his feet, fists curled. "You're actually retarded! I'm not ordering you around, idiot!"

What happened next was so fast that Tolmeki barely comprehended it. Pierré's fist moved so fast it was a blur; he slammed it into the side of Lifa's head, who he went down.

"Hey!" suddenly everyone was on their feet. "Cut it out!" Tolmeki said, grabbing Benlizar.

"Don't touch me," Benlizar growled, and he tried to knee him. Tolmeki had been in fights before though, and he knew he was much stronger than Pierré. He forced him down and into a hold, using his larger weight and muscle mass to his advantage. Eventually, Pierré stopped struggling.

Just then, Daniel returned from his ice bath. "What the hell is going on here?" he asked.

There was a hubbub of noise. "Benlizar hit me!" Lifa shouted. "I'm going to kill that little bitch."

"Tolmeki, let go of Benlizar," Daniel said. "Let him explain himself."

Tolmeki released him, and Pierré stumbled away. "I don't have to explain anything," he snarled. "You think you're better than me because you got a little award at the end of the year and coach made you captain. Well, great for you, Danny. That's really nice, you know that?"

Artémis stared at him impassionately. "Go take an ice bath, Pierré," he said. "Or go home."

Pierré rocked on the balls of his feet for a moment, and then stalked out of the room, grabbing a towel on his way out.

There was a moment of silence, and then Daniel said, "What are you all staring at? Get back to... whatever you were doing."

Tolmeki returned to his armchair, and after a second picked up the magazine Benlizar had been reading. It was going to be an interesting tournament, to say the least.

Tuzzio looked straight to the goal. He dribbled another player and quickly got into the box. He saw Johans running directly to the penalty spoot, willing to shoot with all his strength and score what would be Farfadillis' 1st goal in the match. He gave him the ball perfectly, it was clean, a master pass. Johans took the ball, and, instead of one-touch shooting, he dribbled 1 player, and chipped it over the goalkeeper, who was on an awkward position.

Raguzzelli looked up, he had to stop that shot, the equalizing one. The foul had been necessary, and the referee had been wrong when he yellow (instead of red) carded Nessi. He saw the Mytannian striker shoot towards his left, and reacted as fast as lightning to stop it, he did it. However, the striker got the rebound, and Raguzzelli was lying on the floor. Mytannion equalized, and it had been just 2 minutes after the 1st Farf goal.

Fu stepped in, he glanced at the fans, he was kind of nervous, there were many Farfs, not that much, but for him they were many. He then realized he had entered to play, not to get distracted by the fans and saw how Tenian got fouled just inside the box, the referee had given a penalty. He suddenly heard a voice from behind. "Go Fu, take it.", it turned out to be O'rosso, who behind him. As soon as Fu realized, he ran to take the penalty. He was really nervous. He had to score, it was his chance to shine. He took 2 steps and fulminated the ball, the goalkeeper touched it but couldn't stop it, the ball had entered and Farfadillis was winning once again. Fu felt relieved.

And the player felt the relieving sound of the referee's whistle being blown, and the felt joy, simply joy, for winning the 1st 3 points, which were really important in order to advance to the Round of 16.

DI BRADINI CUP 24
Esportiva Clash ends with Cy winning.
As the DBC 24 start, Group D, the Victory Park recieved a match-up featuring veteran Cyborg Holland taking on Sophomore NSI at a fitting Esportiva clash. The Marills pressured Cyborg Holland for the whole first half, with forwards Angst and Cristinho and midfielder Pikachu getting close to the net of Nifterick with very few problems. However, at the second half, the Marills let it loosen up and after a missed move of Tachibana, de Seer scored for the opposite side. End of the match, Marills continue to lose in DBC matches, thankfully however, for one goal only. And with Taeshan and Dorian and Sonya coming, last place is expected.

RoBoTHINGS OFF TO WINNING START

Vilita & Turori Robothings 3-2 Ko-oren Under-21

In their debut outing the Vilita & Turori Robothings worked through the bugs and got some goals from unlikely sources as the team, working as a system for the first time, outlasted a Ko-orenite squad that has trouble figuring out what to call themselves.

The Ko-oren squad entered the pitch wearing blue and green, and the Ko-orenite commentator seated in the booth right next to the Vilita National correspondants seemed to be lost in the shuffle when referring to the Meritocratic Utopia's national Under-21 football squad. Early on, the commentator referred to Ko-oren as the Litegreens, but then after the half started referencing them as the Liteblues, notably after Elim Norilyin had scored the equalizing goal.

10 minutes later, Ko-oren's Tom Malkarn slotted the ball past Corsibot to give the Litegreens... Liteblues... Litegreenblues? the lead. Instead of using one of the previously mentioned descriptors, however, the commentator started going on some maniacal rant about Butterflies. Apparently, in lieu of inserting the word 'Lite' in front of any of the given colors on the Ko-orenite uniform, replacing the jargon altogether with the nomenclature of the fantastically whimsical Lepidoptera was also an accepted practice.

Of course, it was the first match playing as a system for the Vilita & Turori Robothings. Having been assembled everywhere from Lonngeylin to Lake Bekk, and many destinations in between, they were delivered to Jhanna where they were synched and unleashed at the Jader Barbahlo Stadium.

It looked as if the designers had produced an unstoppable and potentially unacceptable force to be reckoned with as the Robothings opened the scoring from the outset with AfrikkaBot charging up from the backfield to score on a rebound header following a shot from BandaBot that rang off the crossbar and bounced straight back into play.

Things got tricky from that point, however, and there was not much time that went by during the remainder of the first half where at least one of the on-field bots was suffering technical difficulty. In fact, BaledrokadrokaBot, having never been turned on for more than 30 minutes at a time previously, ran into a string limitation, ultimately determined to have been driven by the length of the name it was given, causing the bot to freeze in place in the 42nd minute. Vilita & Turori played the remainder of the first half with 10 bots.

BaledrokadrokaBot was substituted at the half and software upgrades were immediately begun to ensure the problem did not repeat itself. NerniBot made a much-anticipated debut replacing BaledrokadrokaBot while KeckerBot was also replaced withMitarokaBot coming taking that place in the midfield.

The changes obviously made the Robothings worse at first, as the bot-system had to adjust to the introduction of the two new components and had not fully processed the fact that KeckerBot, who was positioned on the side of the pitch in the dugout area, was no longer on the playing surface. Many Vilita & Turori possessions to start the second half ended in a throw in or giveaway in midfield as a VilitanBot looked to find KeckerBot, the main playmaker in the first half, during a passing opportunity. The confusion led directly to a pair of Ko-oren goals which put the Robothings behind, but eventually the chemistry returned when KeckerBot was removed from the pitch entirely being returned to the lockerroom.

The Robothings began fluorishing again after the hour mark and equalized in the 78th minute through the newly-introduced NerniBot who proved to be every bit as magical as promised by Yeaddin Robotics. Not to be out-done, however, Jlinal Robotics certainly came away as the winner on the day as their pride and joy, AfrikkaBot, converted the winning goal from a corner kick two minutes from time, giving the Robothings the come-from behind victory in what was sure to be their most difficult match, technically speaking, of the tournament.

The Vilita & Turori staff were confident after the match of having BaledrokadrokaBot's software issues sorted out prior to the match against Kiryu-shi, as well as implementing a 'straight to the locker room' policy for any substituted bots to ensure no repeat of the issues that plagued the Robothings for the first 15 minutes or so of the second half against Ko-oren.

The players trudged off the field, dejected. With the score tied at one all going into the final few minutes, they'd missed a great chance to take the lead with mere seconds left on the clock when Illich-Svitych had just been that crucial split second too slow in reacting to Dafinnursson's through ball, and the chance had been squandered. Worse still, substitute striker for Boring Paradise Paul Bell had then received the ball on the counter-attack and lashed home his second of the match past Artemiusz Korzhanenko in goal for the Chicks. For a keeper that had been relatively unchallenged throughout the match, it was particularly galling.

For Paul Bell, of course, two shots on target and two goals was a pretty good stat to take away from the match, but the Polarian defence were fuming. For much of the match, they'd been faced with Sameer Jaklim Jr and Raiyaan Malik Jr up front for Boring Paradise. At 11 and 12 years old respectively, these guys had barely started going through puberty, and they were a good two feet smaller than some of the naturally tall Polarians in defence - Vlaschenko and Wien had barely had to exert themselves to physically hold their opposition away from the ball. And, yeah, perhaps they'd got complacent. Because when Bell and Rispin came on instead, they weren't expecting the sudden physical challenge that meant Bell would go on to score twice in the last twenty minutes.

On the sidelines waiting for them, seething, was Gregorz van der Riise. It'd bee tough enough blocking Timo Skye's applications to join the coaching staff of the youth set-up, but now he had some serious ear-bashing to do in the next few days before their next match. He'd been pressing on them at half time the need to focus and to not let complacency sneak into their game, but the way they played after the break, he could already sense he'd lost that battle, and was praying the two baby0faced strikers would stay on the pitch. The second he saw that double substitution from Matthew Johnstone getting announced, he knew they'd be in trouble.

That kind of on-pitch control should have come down to the captain, Kohev Küngas-Vaga, the versatile left back and defensive midfielder from Northbrook Diamonds, originally of Kuril descent, but as the twenty-year-old walked off the pitch with his head down, it was clear to van der Riise that he needed to teach the young man a thing or two about captaincy and team leadership. He had it in him, he knew he did. Looking at this crop of players he knew without doubt that Küngas-Vaga, Vlaschenko, Wein, Korzhanenko, Hesjedal, Rovanpera, Villeneuve, Stenmark, Odegaard, Illich-Svitych, Jagr, and Dagfinnursson all had it in them to collect a hefty handful of caps for the Terns, and in some way that meant his job for the u-21s was more about personal development than team performance. But then, the best way to aid that personal development was to play as many matches as possible. And that meant progression. Which in turn required a team performance.

van der Riise gave Vlaschenko a pat on the back and a clip round the ear as he walked past him and down the tunnel, reassurance and punishment for his mistakes all in one go, but the defender would still be in the starting lineup next match. He was just lucky he had Union Isle next, he thought, this team were going to need a lot of work before they faced the reigning champions High Heels in their last and crucial group stage match...

"First of all, they double team us with two nations vs. one, then they apparently only fielded robots... How could we even win against that? Not only that, but something somewhere, god knows what, short circuited and zapped one of our guys! This abomination can't go on for long... can it? Also, these robots were made not less than 2-3 years ago. I know it's 'U21' but that surely can't mean it's U5, too? I bet these machines have got GPS too, so they always know which of their teambots are where. Thank heavens that that backfired too, as they were trying to play to an already substituted teambot. Last but not least, one of those things just... froze somewhere at the end of the first half. What is up with that? I hope this was the last match like this. I'm all for new technology and new experiences, but this... never!" said the coach. Many players supported these views: "I dunno what happened, but I'm still static", "Next time we play them, I hope there'll be an unexpected rainstorm" were things that were repeatedly heard around the match. The KFA is seeking to formulate an official complaint with the organization.

Needless to say, Vilita 3 - Turori 0 - Ko-oren 2.

The Slembana Times: Decent start for U-21 team

By Peter Whiteman, chief football reporter at the Hallad City Stadium, Hallad City, Starblaydia (attendance 48,432)

We have drawn our first game in the Di Bradini Cup, the international football cup for national under-21 football players, 2-2 with Lymantatia. This is our first-ever Di Bradini Cup, and it is being held in Starblaydia. It is usually held in Starblaydia, as it is named after former Starblaydi football hero Simeone Di Bradini. Anyway, let’s get on with the match itself.

We opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, when Val Kylx, a star for the senior team, headed home a cross from Prince Latifa. Lymantatia’s star striker hit the post in the 7th minute, before their other striker saw a shot saved by goalkeeper Kevin Banks. We had a good chance to score in the 14th minute, with Jordan Valfox seeing a curled shot palmed away by the Lymantatian goalkeeper.

Lymantatia almost equalized in the 19th minute, with their star striker hittong the crossbar with a volley. Kylx saw a shot go wide after 22 minutes, before Valfox and Latifa saw good shots saved, in the 25th and 28th minutes, respectively.

Lymantatia equalized after 37 minutes, with the star striker dinking the ball over Banks to score. Good work from Oliver van der Young almost set up Valfox up for our second goal after 40 minutes, only for Valfox’s shot to be cleared off the line. We almost went into half-time 2-1 up, with a wonderful pass from Jyvx Dagens, another player in this Di Bradini Cup squad who is also a senior squad member, finding Kylx, who just fired wide from a tight angle. The half-time score was quite satisfactory at 1-1.

In the 47th minute, Lymantatia’s star playmaker hit the bar with a free-kick. Their two strikers also came close, as Lymantatia were having a period of dominance during the match. This dominance paid off after 56 minutes, when a shot from their right-winger, which looked like it would go wide, took a wicked deflection off captain Dennis Valfern. The ball then went in for an own goal, giving Lymantatia a 2-1 lead.

Lymantatia almost went further ahead after 63 minutes, with their star striker hitting the post with a bicycle kick. Their other striker had a header cleared off the line by van der Young in the 70th minute, which was a watershed moment in the match. It started a period of dominance for us.

Latifa, Valfox, Kylx, van der Young, Jordan Cleveland (who came on as a 76th minute sub for van der Young), and Dagens all saw shots saved by the Lymantatian goalkeeper, so it was no surprise when we equalized in the 4th minute of stoppage time at the end of the game.

Cleveland ran down the wing after receiving the ball from right-back Yannick Fleftouno. Cleveland then passed it in Dagens, who played a one-two with Valfox. Dagens then hit it as hard as he could with his right foot, smashing the ball into the top corner of the net to level the game right at the end, sending our fans (and the Starblaydian contingent supporting us) wild.

Stats:
Lymantatia:
2 goals: Unknown 37, Valfern 56 (og)
9 shots on target
13 shots
2 corners
51% possession

Slembana:
2 goals: Kylx 3, Dagens 90+4
20 shots on target
25 shots
1 corner
49% possession

Man of the match: Oliver van der Young, 8/10
The 15 year old had a good match today. He created many chances, put in many good crosses, and was only denied a goal due to being substituted for Jordan Cleveland with 14 minutes left.

A letter penned to interested individuals of the
Sakaino Athletic and Performance Arts Committee,
with the utmost respect and admiration,

It has come to the attention of this committee that the coach requested to travel to Starblaydia to accompany and guide Kiryu-shi’s Under-21 national football team is not fulfilling his share of expectations. J.J. Erickson, who was nominated by the Sakaino Athletics and Performing Arts Committee to represent the nation at the 24th Di Bradini Cup, was expected to lead the Kiryu-shi team, showcasing the nation’s commitment to excellence in education and youth athletics. Their loss to Licentiapacisterra, broadcast on national television in Kiryu-shi, was a surprising and unfortunate loss, and experts from our university have informed us that the team looked even worse than the score indicated.

Among our primary observations from that first match is the fact that the defense looked poorly organized and ultimately dysfunctional, despite supposedly being the strength of our team. In the proposal for the nomination of J.J. Erickson, it was noted that he was supposed to have a strong understanding of Lilly Yume’s style of play. Yume, one of our best representatives in the international football community, was supposed to be directly under Erickson’s tutelage during this Di Bradini competition. If the first match is any indication, Erickson has failed, significantly, in his development of her in particular, but also the Kiryu-shi defending as a whole.

Statistical analysis supports our general conclusions. Our opponents from Licentiapacisterra, held a dramatic advantage in the number of shots and shots on goal, with more than 120% of the latter category than our team managed. This is not an acceptable number.

The only reason for the reasonable respectable score of 2-1 is the play of one Megumi Harris, who succeeded despite the lackluster play of the defense. One notable example of J.J. Erickson’s tactical mistakes being disguised by the play of Harris came in the 21st minute, when Conan Walker and Dylan Cunningham, of the opposing team, managed to execute a wall-pass that managed to fool multiple defenders, and left Walker completely free, with the ball, near the endline on the right side of the goal. His cross into the middle was neat, and managed to elude the scrambling Kiryu-shi defenders en route to finding a midfielder, Luca Mackay, in front of goal. Mackay’s shot looked like a sure goal, but a diving Harris managed to punch the ball out of play. Another example came in the 34th minute, when a longer once again found Walker free on the right wing, where he had around twenty meters of free space to do what he wanted. His cross, higher this time, went to the back side of goal, and a head by the opposing forward, Paterson, was similarly punched away by Harris. Unfortunately, repeated break-downs in defending led to two goals in quick succession early in the second half.

All of this is to say that Kasakake as a whole has not been impressed with the representation of Kiryu-shi in the Di Bradini Cup. As you are no doubt aware, we are attempting to increase the reputation of Kiryu-shi’s University system, which includes the play of our most athletic students in this youth tournament. This display was unacceptable, and we will be closely monitoring further developments in the Di Bradini Cup.

If we remain unimpressed with the play of the Kiryu-shi team, we must inform you that there are those in Kasakake who are more than willing to strip the Sakaino Athletics and Performance Arts Committee of the influence it holds over international football competition. We are aware of the hard work you have put in to developing Kiryu-shi football, but we are troubled by reports of internal dysfunction coming from the south. While this is by no means an ultimatum of any sorts, we feel pressed to inform you of discussion circulating in the nation’s premier governing university.

Further, we have already begun deliberations over the coaching staff for the upcoming AOCAF competition. We will strongly recommend that a coach that we recommend lead a team selected by our committee, for what may be a trial for the future of Kiryu-shi football. We strongly encourage your committee not to submit your own recommendation for the coach and roster for the AOCAF. We will remind you that although J.J. Erickson is not currently employed by your university, we have no qualms with strongly encouraging his dismissal from Kiryu-shi football, and we believe we have the necessary influence to see his dismissal through, even before the Di Bradini Cup ends.

Sincerely,
The Kasakake University Committee on International Affairs
Kasakake University
Premier Kiryu-shi Governance

------------------------------------------

A letter in acknowledge of prior correspondence from the
The Kasakake University Committee on International Affairs,

Thank you for your concerns and comments regarding the U-21 team representing Kiryu-shi in Starblaydia this summer. We have taken your critiques on the first match very seriously, and have relayed your accurate and insightful criticisms and observations to those who we believe will make the best use of them.

We are particularly interested in your characterization of the match as, “even worse than the score indicated.” We have duly noted that the adequate way of issuing value to the success in any given football match is not the final score, but instead how a team “looked” in relation to the other team. And we will likely be including a discussion on the conclusiveness of the “shots on goal” criteria within our statistical analysis of football freshman seminar this fall.

We hope you were also able to recognize the subtle unpredictabilities of the sport of football, amongst which include the ability of a single coach to control and handle a team of eighteen young men and women, while most other teams play with a full staff of coaches and assistants. While we agree completely that our preparation was inferior, we cannot help but marvel at the ability of the various governments of other nations who were able to procure more than a single visa for their football coaching staff. Likewise, we hope you will share our enthusiasm and surprise for teams throughout the tournament who were able to send a full compliment of players to Starblaydia, without instances of prominent youth players who were deemed “medically unfit for international travel.”

Eternally grateful for the most impressive ways you continue to govern our nation from the hallowed grounds of Kasakake,
and certainly without suggesting you have more important matters to address than youth football,

Representatives of the
Sakaino Athletic and Performance Arts Committee

Playing Like Animals: a Fox, a Wolf and a Whole Bunch of Horses
Geisenfried rallies from slow start, but can't hold off late equalizer in a goal-filled opening match

NEMYAN NATIONAL STADIUM :: HECIA, STARBLAYDIA - If you had the chance to watch the wild opening match here in Starblaydia, you got to see Geisenfried U-21s at their worst (the first thirty minutes), their best (the next fifty), and their most disappointing (the final ten). It was a match you truly had to see to believe - and not just because the opponents was primarily made of horses. Winged pegasi, horned unicorns, and just your everyday equines from the Equestrian States took the field trying to claim glory over the Königsbund's finest young talent, in a match that was as exciting and entertaining as it was eccentric.

At the beginning, Geisenfried was showing some pretty clear culture shock - which, in my opinion is pretty understandable. You can look at footage and analyze matches all you want, but while watching horses play soccer is one thing, actually having them as opponents in a match (if you'll pardon me using the same pun twice in an article) is an entirely different animal. It was the veteran (or at least, as experienced as you get in the U21 level) pegasi that made the most of Geisenfried's confusion early - the Equestrian States' Thunderlane celebrated the quarter-hour mark by putting his team ahead one-nil, and only eight minutes later, the midfielder Cloudchaser made the most of an opportunity to put up insurance. With just past twenty minutes gone, it looked like the Equestrian States would romp to a decisive win, with Geisenfried looking pretty flat and dejected in the early going. But by the half-hour point, it was clear the tide was starting to turn. Geisenfried started controlling a greater and greater portion of possession, and putting more chances into the box. As the fortieth minute crept ever closer, Lukas Kani cut towards the Equestrian States box and hit a hard long ball goal-wise. While the shot managed to beat the keeper, it clanged back out into the field of play off the crossbar - fortunately for Geisenfried, though, it bounced towards the awaiting Wolf Gerhardt, who cleaned up the rebound to make it two-one. Geisenfried would continue to press up until the end of the half, but would have to stew at the deficit throughout the halftime pause.

By the beginning of the second half, Geisenfried was starting to emphasize its advantage. Continuing to control the majority of possession, Geisenfried pushed time and again up the right hand flank, with the Equestrian States unable to answer or contain the duo of Jordan Fuchs and Wolf Gerhardt. To their credit, they noticed their difficulties holding up Geisenfried's dominant right half early in the latter half and attempted tactical modifications - but to their detriment, nothing they tried seem to work for quite some time. In the fifty-fifth minute, Fuchs pushed a pass up to Gerhardt into the right side of the box, drawing the defender forward, only for Gerhardt to backheel it to Fuchs, left with plenty of space to make a shot. All he needed to do was put it on frame - which he did admirably, hammering the upper left hand corner of the net to make it two-all. Not ten minutes later, Geisenfried was pushing up the right wing again. Fuchs, confronted by a pair of Equestrians, sent the ball back to Diedrick Ellsmann before pushing forward. Ellsmann passed the ball right back as Fuchs squeezed through the defenders and managed to get to the oncoming ball. The backline came in to close Fuchs' window while Gerhardt used the opening to cut in towards the box just as the ball reached Fuchs' feet - Fuchs made a one-touch pass to Gerhardt, and the young Wolf smashed the ball into the side panel to put Geisenfried into the lead for the first time. Eventually, the Equestrian States closed the right-hand gap, but for a while, it looked like it would be too little, too late.

As the clock approached eighty, the Equestrian States began pushing forward once again with a manic rush that only an impending final whistle can bring forth in a team. Geisenfried, for what it's worth, seemed to content to try and hold possession and waste time, but soon the frantic pace set by their opponents had them on their back heel. Finally, in the last few minutes before injury time, Equestrian States found their opportunity. The unicorn Archer converted the chance, and the game settled at three apiece, where it would remain until time was called. In the end, both teams could find frustration in not pulling three points out of the match - Geisenfried for allowing the last goal to get through, the Equestrian States for not figuring out a way to stop Geisenfried's right wing from tearing them apart earlier. Both have reasons to be happy to avoid the loss and a zero on the table - Geisenfried for not letting their opening minute troubles doom them, the Equestrian States for finding one last bit of fight in them to equalize. In the end, they'll have to be content with one, as they look forward towards advancing into the knockout rounds.

Man of the Match: Having put his footwork on all 3 Geisen goals, I imagine the popular pick here will be Wolfgang Gerhardt, and deservedly so. But I'm going to go a bit out of the box and give Jordan Fuchs recognition here, for while Gerhardt was opportunistic in putting the ball into the back in the net, Fuchs deserves much of the credit for creating the opportunities in the first place. Fuchs' club August Gründer is getting a solid reputation for developing midfield talent - look at Eric Reiher and David Kellerman. When Fuchs was brought up from the 2. team, much hype was made about Gründer producing yet another young monster midfielder. But while he was seen as promising, many wondered if he was still too much of a developmental project, better served by having a bit more seasoning in the reserve leagues or being put out on loan to a lower league team rather than being brought up directly into the Bundesliga. Still, he transferred his potential into a reserve spot on the senior team for this latest World Cup cycle, and though he was one of Büchner's more sparsely used bench players, he did get a chance to prove himself against the best of the world on a couple of occasions. That said, when the U-21 team was announced and Fuchs held a prominent place on it, many started speculating how his experience training and observing with the senior squads in contrast to his comparatively limited playing time both nationally and domestically would play out. The answer, at least from this match, was emphatic in showing that the opportunities Fuchs has been presented with have been worthwhile. With the team down two-nil, it was largely Fuchs who began stepping up and dominating the midfield, and throughout the middle of the game, when Geisenfried started playing like the better team, attacks were coming down Fuchs' right flank again and again. A beautiful set up with Gerhardt gave Fuchs the equalizer in the fifty-fifth, and Fuchs returned the favor by placing a ball right where the charging Gerhardt wanted it for his second goal in the sixty-fourth that put Geisenfried ahead until the end. If Fuchs can continue to push this team forward as he did through the middle portion of this game, Geisenfried can go far.

Spotlight on: Lukas Kani, the other young senior squad transplant for this U-21 competition, has been given a lot of adoration for his potential as a game-changing playmaker, having succeeded in the role of late substitute for the top Geisen domestic side Königs FC. With his reputation for being 'clutch' in providing a spark to his team late in games with a bit of youthful energy, he too was brought up into the senior squad in hopes he could convert some of his magic on the international stage. His record against premier international competition was not quite as stellar this cycle, though he should be given some benefit of the doubt, given how few opportunities he had to prove himself. When time came for the Di Bradini and he was given a starting spot, a new question emerged - namely, how would he handle the full ninety, as opposed as taking advantage of more fatigued players at the end of games? The answer from this game is... well, but perhaps not well enough. His only real big chance was Geisenfried's first goal, which probably should have been his, but it clanged off the crossbar and it was up to Gerhardt to clean the remains, which he did admirably. He had a couple other opportunities, but his best shot was the chance he carved for himself right there before the 40-minute mark. Now, it may be because Fuchs' exceptional play focused Geisenfried's attack on the right flank, rather than Lukas' spot on the left-hand side. But either way, if Kani wants to prove himself worthy of continued international play, he's going to have to step it up in the coming matches.

From the journal of 18-year-old starting keeper Kaisa Cuban, now a professional with Sporting Boulder:

This is what I like about this team. That we're a team.

I got to sit the bench today and watch through a coach's eyes. Coach Grainne had me shadow her new assistant while my backup and best friend Veronica started. (And got a clean sheet, you GO girl!! :) Coach Lyndi is a real sweetheart with a quick mind. She was a keeper like me and we talked a lot about reading the pitch. I think we both got crazy at the same time when Caroline Cowboy stripped that ball in about the 10th minute and went looking for a place to cross it to. She found Giulietta lounging up front as though nothing was happening. Onside, sure, but way too loosely marked. Bang bang 1-0.

Twenty minutes later it was sort of bang bang bang 2-0, Caroline got her first goal as a Vixen on a similar play. She started things up again with a steal, but when she crossed to Elspeth Pump it was one-timed back to her. Quick as a flash. Nobody expected it, but Caroline was open and buried it. I won't say we let up after that, but we did conserve energy. (Like a true tower rat. We're always thinking conservation back home in the tower.) Tourneys take a lot out of me, and I think everyone else agrees.

So both goals were examples of thinking team and not just me-me-me. And I was so happy for Veronica! It took me a long time to not feel guilty about "taking her job." Four years ago I was her backup and she was my mentor. Now they pay me a lot to be a pro and she's the backup . . . and she still watches out for me. Warned me off that one creep before I figured out he was a creep, glad she did. She'll be a good architect if she gets her way. Smart chick. Pretty, too, they really fixed her injuries well from that face save. We're still teammates and BFFs.

Now we play Boring Paradise, that will NOT be boring because they took down Polar Islandstates 2-1. Which means even if we win we can't lock up a qualification unless the Chicks draw with Union Isle. No fun, it's nice to take the pressure off early.

Mytanar Under-21 Squad Announced.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2012 | FOOTBALL | by Arni Ekymin

Image
Dobroslav Stojanovic (red), will be captaining the young side.
Today, the Mytanar under-21 squad was announced for the 24th Di Bradini Cup. It is a bit of a mixture in terms of quality, with many young players being selected for the national side at short notice and so many have competed in the World Cup over the summer and have not been able to compete in the Di Bradini Cup also, with fatigue setting in and many being made ineligible by their clubs as the Top League season. This has led to the squad that has been selected looking slightly weakened and having a lot of players that are perhaps absolutely unknown to the world outside Mytannion included in it. Four 16 year olds have been selected and one will be expected to play every single game - Tomica Poljak, starting goalkeeper for Litala '93 and now the Mytanar under-21s will be key in between the sticks and will have a huge weight placed on his shoulders.

Talking about goalkeepers, all three selected are actually 16. Starting - as aforementioned - will be Tomica Poljak, the tall, rangy shot-stopper will be pivotal in how well the team do. He is expected to take over from Demy de Zooijt when he retires (or Kondrat Istomin, if he gets the job after de Zooijt retires), purely because he has excellent reflexes and a great ability to get in the way of shots. He has an excellent presence in goal, too, which always helps. He has many years ahead of him and should be a good goalkeeper for years to come.

The two substitute goalkeepers, Sandro Markovic and Lukasz Domansky are of a decent pedigree. Markovic has the edge between the two, though, being the starting goalkeeper for Top League cellar dwellers, Fk Arsika. Domansky is substitute goalkeeper for Atletik Thessia, having come through the strong youth system there and should be the starting goalkeeper for them in the coming seasons. Markovic will probably move on from Fk Arsika after this season as they are expected to get relegated and so Markovic will wish to move on to pastures new in order to try and further his career. The Di Bradini Cup will be a good start in this, and it may get him some spotlight from foreign clubs, giving them an opportunity to make a move for him.

The defence is looking strong this year in particular, even if it consists largely of inexperienced players. Mytannion as a nation always seems to produce some good defenders and central midfielders, at the moment it is looking like this trend will continue. Henrik van Senisnen and his younger brother, Yurij van Senisnen will play at left-back and right-back respectively, with Henrik having more experience than his youth seems to show. Separating the two brothers are two 20 year olds. Tomas Koudela and Fabijan Bacic will anchor the defence, both being very good in the air and good in both man and zonal marking systems. However, they do both lack a bit of pace which could cause them problems at times. Koudela is a CDSA Decraa player, even if rumours over the summer have had him being linked with moves to both Atletik Thessia and Decraa's rivals, Energia-Yaderny Miago. Bacic comes from the reputable Litala '93 youth academy, that seems to have a knack of throwing up strong defenders. One of the Prochazka triplets (all three of which play for Zenit Esca), will be on the bench, Oldrich will serve as good back-up for Henrik van Senisnen at left-back, whilst Miro Obad - another being linked with a move away from his domestic club team - and Eduard Bubela providing very good cover at centre-half too. Patrik Vesely is the fourth 16 year old in the squad and will be the cover at right fullback for Yurij van Senisnen.

Midfield, where we will be looking to find a replacement for Robin Hjik in future seasons. Thorvar Prijholm comes from a similar background, having been produced by the prolific Atletik Thessia academy, but sadly plays defensive midfield and will be anchoring the team from there, breaking up the play and then spraying a few passes around to try and get the play going again. Dobroslav Stojanovic is a player of the Robin Hjik mould, with him being a pacy, creative central midfielder who isn't afraid of sticking a tackle in. Stojanovic will captain the side and the FC Ararat Severyan midfielder will certainly be a key part of the team, expect him to produce goals and assists throughout the campaign. He's strong and will be one for the future, certainly. Beside him will be Halvdann Engebakken, the Liria Prizren central midfielder will provide some much needed guile to the midfielder, the pintsized schemer will pick passes through the tightest of defences and attempt to break teams down using this combination of close control and extremely accurate passing. He won't offer much physical presence, but his creativity and intelligence when on the ball will provide the team with something the may otherwise lack, with the surging runs of Stojanovic and the tough tackling and quick passing of Prijholm offering different things, but not necessarily someone who can unpick the tightest of defensive strangleholds.

In reserve, we have three decent talents too. Zdenek Valisz could easily start in Engebakken's place, but he is a more box-to-box midfielder than Engebakken - and of course, with Stojanovic starting, we don't need another one of them. Dominik Janak is one of Valisz' domestic team mates, also playing for Zenit Esca. Zenit actually have quite a big contingent in this squad, it is unusual really, they're not really considered to be a team that relies hugely on youth policy. There is also Ragnar Baldvinsson, who plays for favourites for the drop, Fk Arsika. Baldvinsson is really just a defensive midfielder, literally being a player who sits and defends. He offers very little going forward, he's just tough tackling and strong and does his job. He could easily replace Zdravko Ivankovic at 1896 Ebor, and may eventually do so. He's been linked with the Northmen for a long while now.

Up top, we're playing three. Ladislav Prochazka will be playing off the left, which isn't his favourite role at all. He's more suited to playing through the middle, but he certainly didn't complain when he discovered the role he'd be playing for the under-21 squad. "Sure, it may not be my favoured role out there. I'm just quite pleased to be included in the squad though and I'm happy that Dario [Kovac, under-21 squad manager], chose to pick me and has given me a chance to show-off my skills." Ladislav said, another Zenit player in the squad and another one of the Prochazka triplets. Felix Kaestner is a big physical presence through the middle, strong and great at holding the ball up and bringing others into play. Expect him to head a fair few goals in this tournament. Off the right is young winger (as in, 17 year old young), Thorvallur Asthursson, the Liria Prizren youngster will be a huge talent for this team. His pace and dribbling skills will tear defences apart. He does have a bit of a tendency to keep the ball for too long and always look for the spectacular rather than keeping it simple and perhaps helping the team more. We have no natural left winger in the squad, which could leave the national team in a bad position in the future. Ostoja Maric will be our replacement off the right, he's a more hard-working right winger than Asthursson and will chase the ball and move back to help the midfield when he is needed.

Our two replacements up front are Iivari Kaitanen and Nils Ingebregtsen, Kaitanen is expected to be a starter in the national side for many years once he gets blooded and is being touted as 'the best natural finisher since Radoslaw Famoc', Ingebregtsen is an outstanding foil to this sort of player. He's huge, 6'5, he's absolutely outstanding in the air. Him and Kaestner are similar and we expect both to be fighting for that role in the future, the big targetman role. Ingebregtsen will be looking for a move away from Spartak Makarska in the short-term, however, and this could be the perfect showcase for him to get that dream move away.

This will be an interesting tournament for the under-21s, we really do need to see if we can continue the relative success we have had in recent years. This generation of players will be the sort that are mixed threw the current squad and the next crop of youngsters to make our next senior side. It is important they get experience and it is important they perform well to warn the international footballing community about the quality of Mytanar football, but also to help grow Mytanar football back to the stage it was once at. It was in an extremely strong position, both the league and national side were top quality - many forget this, but when they do remember, they want them days back.

It will be good when they return, certainly.

In what proved to be an altogether uneventful 90 minutes in Starblaydia the Purple Knights of Taeshan met the Sylvanaes Queendom in a battle of two Under 21 national football teams. On one side were the Knights former Di bradini cup champions, and recent senior side round of sixteen advancees. On the other side of the ball is former World Champions on the senior side, who recently had their national team place second at this years World cup. U 21 football though is a much different story than senior side. Yes, there is still 11 men, still red and yellow cards, and still around the same size of a pitch, but the field at U21 cups is more noticeably even. And when you consider the fact that in the final the Knights opponents lost by 6 you realize that even their senior side may not be that much better than the Knights.

The game was a battle of two strong defenses. Both sides put their best effort out, as could be expected. The lone goal of the game could only be described as luck as it barely trickled in past the keepers outstretched gloves. No man is an island, but for the rest of the day that keeper must have felt like one from the looks they received from their teammates. The other big news of the day was a slight knock picked up by a Sylvanaes striker, which led to their only change of the day. The player is expected to be ready for the next match, but i feel in necessary to wish them luck in recovery.

The Slembana Times: Great win in Di Bradini Cup

By Peter Whiteman, chief football reporter at the Hallad City Stadium, Hallad City, Starblaydia (attendance 46,321)

We have recorded our first-ever Di Bradini Cup win - beating Kinitaria 2-1 in our second-ever Di Bradini Cup game.

We opened the scoring in the 1st minute, when Val Kylx fired home after a cross from Oliver van der Young had only been half-cleared by Ciprian Marin. We had two more good chances after that in the next five minutes, with Jordan Valfox hitting the post, and Prince Latifa curling into the arms of Kinitarian goalkeeper Jan Maruska. Kinitaria had two good chances of their own after that, with star striker Milan Beskid curling wide, and their other striker, Konstantin Zavila, seeing a header saved by our goalkeeper, Kevin Banks.

We had a really good chance to score on 29 minutes, only for Jyvx Dagens to hit the post with a free-kick. However, we went 2-0 up in the 39th minute, when a great van der Young cross found Valfox, who headed home via the post. Despite seeing Beskid fire wide on 44 minutes, we went into half-time with the score at 2-0 to us.

The second half started with us dominant - Maruska was saving efforts from Kylx, Valfox, Dagens, van der Young, Latifa, and Martin Vëlbá. However, we still couldn't find a third goal which would well and truly kill Kinitaria off, and we were given a scare in the 67th minute, when Samuel Costica chipped the ball over Banks to score, making the score 2-1 to us and giving Kinitaria hope. Thankfully, Kinitaria had no more good chances after that, as we won 2-1.

The match for Boring Paradise did not go well as we were against High Heels at Starblaydia yesterday night. With High Heels trying to Defend first place from Boring Paradise. They had successfully did that and moved Boring Paradise 3 points behind the leaders. Raiyaan Malik Jr and Sameer Jaklim Jr both trying their best and then only scored one last minute goal. It was Giulietta Slingback scoring two goals in the first and Elspeth Pump finishing the win off on the 80th minute.

High Heels had tried to defend their first place title in Group H and they will keep it for the next match. High Heels' manager, Grainne Cuban expected us to lose this match. As we are the first team to score against High Heels in the Group stage that is a good achievement for us. Matthew Johnstone ad even bigger achievements than this by getting a point or even three points from the match.

The fans and the staff from Boring Paradise will be supporting the team on to win the match against Union Isle tonight.

BALEDROKADROKABOT OUT INDEFINATELY

Key Cog in Robothings Midfield Sent back to the Factory

For the second time in two matches at the 24th DiBradini Cup, BaledrokadrokaBot suffered technical difficulties causing a disruption in the Vilita & Turori Robothings system.

BaledrokadrokaBot, who was out of commission for the final portion of the first half against Ko-oren after freezing in place due to what appeared to be a string limitation, suffered further difficulties against Kiryu-shi that may put the Bot out of commission for the remainder of the Di Bradini Cup.

On-site technicians from Crosaibi Robotics thought they had fixed the string limitation issue after the match against Ko-oren but further issues developed against Kiryu-shi that would likely have been found had the team from Crosaibi Robotics allowed the bot to be analyzed at the nearby Lake Bekk Robotics factory.
Image

Citing competition and proprietary knowledge, however, the Crosaibi team refused to allow the Lake Bekk team access to the internals of the BaledrokadrokaBot. The further delays and complications will now require BaledrokadrokaBot to be returned to Crosaibi for further testing to prove match readiness before a hopeful return to Starblaydia for the Di Bradini Cup knockout rounds.

With the Robothings precariously positioned, however, there may be no knockout round action unless Vilita & Turori can defeat Licentiapacisterra at the Jader Barbahlo Stadium. Victory will ensure the Robothings advance at least to play one knockout match while defeat will ensure their elimination. A draw would result in a complication of scenarios depending on how many goals each team scored, not only the Robothings against Licentiapacisterra, but also both Ko-oren and Kiryu-shi in Group E's other matchup.

Meanwhile, in Turori, Turori Robotics have finished assembly of their first Bot, MalainoBot. MalainoBot is not expected to feature until future competitions due to the wide variety of testing planned prior to delivery and integration into the Robothings system, but it is an encouraging milestone for the Vilita & Turori squad, currently composed entirely of Vilitan-Flagged Bots.

Turori Robotics plan to begin work on no less than 3 Bots which will be complimented by the two Turori-Flagged Bots being produced by Lake Bekk Robotics, beginning with the already in-assembly InostrazaBot.

They were on the verge of losing. Adrian Tolmeki could feel it. The Pasargan team had solid control of the midfield, and even Pierré Benlizar, who prided himself on always playing with a smirk, seemed to have an expression of panic. Each time the Pasargan team ran it down the pitch, they came closer and closer to firing a shot off. Only a combination of frantic clearance and lucky offsides had saved the Swiss from defeat thus far.

But then! There they went! A Pasargan striker slipped through Icheliu and Cidi to have a clear run on goal. Tolmeki could only watch in horror as Dolosovek rushed forward in a desperate attempt to stop the ball. The Pasargan striker hesitated for a split second, and then fired to the left.

Dolosovek dived, and his fingers gave the ball the slighest of brushes. It spun towards goal, bounced, and then rolled out, just mere inches away from the post.

"Jesus Christ," Pierré said beside him, as the Swiss midfield came in to defend against the corner. Tolmeki found his man, and locked onto him. He was taller than him, as usual. What he lacked in speed and agility he would need to make up in brute strength.

The Pasargan player hit the ball, and it came whistling down towards the box. It was close to Tolmeki... but not close enough to play out of position. He stuck by his man, and hoped for the best. A Pasargan striker leapt up, angled his head - but then Lukas Robel, out of nowhere, headed the ball away. In an instant, Lifa Eries was on top of the ball. Tolmeki was already moving down the field, and he intercepted the pass easily. His marker was nowhere to be seen... he had a clear run to half-field.

The Pasargan defenders were there like a wall. Tolmeki had been trying the whole game to find a way around them, unsuccessfully. Only Benlizar had managed to find his way around, but each time his shots had gone too far.

Tolmeki scanned the field around him in an instant. To his right was Artémis, with a Pasargan in between them. Behind him was Benlizar, sprinting up the pitch. Could "Slippery P" find his way through? Or was there another way...

Tolmeki spun and sent a ground ball backwards. Benlizar caught it easily and kept sprinting. Please, please don't be the greedy asshole you are, Tolmeki thought. But he coudln't concern himself with that. He turned around and sprint forward and right, trying to get down the field.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Benlizar run straight towards the defender. No, dammit! he thought. Benlizar suddenly juked right, shifting his body weight. But the Pasargan was ready for him this time...

And then Pierré passed it through his legs, straight to Tolmeki, who with a burst of speed caught it again. He had to turn around, momentarily stopped, and caught sight of a Pasargan speeding towards him, like a bullet. He would never get around him... but he didn't have to.

Tolmeki sent the ball loping upwards, over the Pasargan's head, such as Daniel Artémis accelerated on the other side of the pitch. Suddenly, the tides had turned, and it was now the Swiss on the attack. Artémis reached the ball a second before the Pasargan behind him. He controlled it well, sending it forward towards the edge of the goalie box.

Tolmeki sprinted forwards, but he knew nothing he could do now would affect the outcome. He watched as Artémis, instead of dribbling the ball forward, suddenly slowed down for the briefest of seconds, before almost leaping forward and hitting the ball with the outside of his left foot.

The ball spun forward, achieving liftoff as it hammered towards the Pasargan goal. Their goalkeeper leapt for it... his fingers brushing it just like the Swiss goalkeeper had only a few minutes before. But this time the ball flew between the posts to bury itself into the back of the net.

Deafening silence for a few seconds, and then the muted roar of the crowd as they exploded into cheers. Tolmeki's ears had popped... and his vision went fuzzy for a second. Then Benlizar ran and tackled him. "Goal!" he shouted. "We did it! Bend it like Beskid!" By the box, Tolmeki saw the figure of Artémis, saluting the crowd, one fist raised to the sky.

Bookies Bamboozled: E's Outfits Equal Attributes (Also Alliteration: Editor Uses Any 'Vowel' As 'E'-starting Equalivalents Are Absent, Except 'Vowel')

Ko-oren, Licentiapacisterra, Vilita & Turori and Kiryu-shi all have a goal difference of zero, and all have three points following the second match (out of three) in Group E of the Di Bradini group phase. Ko-oren has been put in first place because the team scored five (which means they also conceded five, which is more than any other team in the group), and Kiryu-shi have been put at place four (as they have 3-3 goal difference). The remaining two teams have 4-4, and that is the only aspect of the entire table that is different for each team. Licentiapacisterra and Vilita & Turori had a great start, winning their first match, but as Ko-oren beat the former and Kiryu-shi beat the latter, everything's open.

Ko-oren will face Kiryu-shi in the last match, but to say that that will be a good thing as they're fourth...

This situation has proven to be difficult for bookmakers throughout the world, as every team has a .250 chance to reach the next round. That is, only if the remaining two matches of Group E end in equal draws (eg. 0-0 and 0-0, 1-1 and 1-1, etc), Ko-oren advances together with probably LPT. Or Vilita & Turori. Or maybe Kiryu-shi.

And the referee blew the whistle, the game had started. There was no way back, win or win. If they won, they would assure a spot in the Round of 16. Farfadillis took the lead in the 7th minute, after Johans scored, accidentally, from a cross. He sure was surprised, he had tried to curl the ball, but not that much. The Farfs were advancing, accidentally. However, Michael VII would equalize with Michael Layman's free kick just outside the box, Farfadillis didn't look desperate, though, they weren't eliminated by any means, and they could still even win. The 1st Half ended like that, both teams having scored 1 goal, with Farfadillis being much more lucky, but both deserving the draw. After Half Time, the Farfs looked refreshed. O'rosso and Tuzzio took a backseat but caused danger regardless. Tenian constantly fed Johans with through balls, so did Setentriona with Dandalleion. The Farfs somehow deserved to win, they were playing even better than against Mytannion. Until Tuzzio decided to try and shoot from afar. Michael VII's goalkeeper, Daniel Delfman, sent it to the corner. O'rosso walked calmly to take the corner.
He crossed, he couldn't see well due to the lights of the stadium, but still, he knew exactly where to cross. Johans saw the ball bending towards the penalty spot, it was clear where it was heading. When he was going to receive the ball (not head it), he saw Fu (who had entered to have 2 strikers and try to win) running behind him. Without thinking, he heeled a perfect through pass, even when the box was all messy. Fu got the ball and loosened off towards the right post of the keeper, who didn't even bother to try and stop the ball; it was impossible. That goal, coupled with Johan's, had given Farfadillis a place in the Round of 16.
