International Basketball Championship 38 - Everything Thread

Postby Katterimunk » Wed Jun 14, 2023 3:56 pm

Welcome to the 38th International Basketball Championship, hosted by Katterimunk, with scorination assistance by South Newlandia.

If you are new to the sport of basketball, the BBC has a basic intro to the sport. Here is a BasketNews guide to the difference between FIBA and NBA rules. (The tournament is scorinated based on a 40 minute game, and therefore, it is assumed that FIBA rules are used. However, neither the FIBA and the NBA are canon in the NS Universe.) This would be the thread for the IC information only. Any OOC posts should either be made on the discussion thread, or on the Signup Thread as linked above.
This section was copied, with permission, from Poaf’s IBC37 thread, because its good

Format
48 teams will compete in 8 groups of 6 teams each, with South Newlandia scorinating groups A-D and Katterimunk scorinating groups E-H. After a double round-robin for 10 total group stage games, the top two teams per group will advance to the double-elimination stage.

Rostering is often seen as a basic form of respect for the tournament and opponents. This also applies for users who enter without the intention to roleplay, a roster could be seen as a bare minimum as it provides basic information to help your opponents, should they choose to roleplay. Typically, a roster would contain information about your basketball team and their positions. Typically, this would include 5 starters and 7 reserves. You can also include other information should you wish, from bios of your players or listing what domestic clubs they play for, to pictures of your uniform or details of your coaching staff.

There are no style modifiers so you do not need to list one, though you are free to describe your team's tactics and approach.

When submitting a roster please include a permissions box:
Code: Select all
My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my scorers: Yes
Assign other stats (e.g. rebounds, assists): Yes/No
RP injuries to my players: Yes/No
Godmod injuries to my players: Yes/No
Eject my players: Yes/No
Godmod other events: Yes/No

It is expected, for this tournament, that users are expected to allow opponents to choose their scorers for ease of roleplaying.
This roster info has also been taken with permission from Poaf’s IBC37 thread.

11 G KIM Hae-Ri 25 6 ft 5 in Z'ai'ai Warriors

STARTERS
PG Kristie Shaddon-Ysenov

Young Kristie Shaddon-Ysenov joined Saints, and Eyrods didn't miss a beat, winning their seventh title. Great off the offensive glass, a mean midrange jumper and ever-prowling eyes make Shaddon-Ysenov one of the more exciting point guards in the CBA. Her game from range is starting to improve, and her eye for the open man makes her a must-watch player, though the team will still run through Lia Xiu. She has only improved in her three-point game and assisting.

SG Lia Xiu, CAPTAIN

The team's leading scorer, Xiu is a natural shooter who can explode for more than thirty points a game on the regular. Whether it be driving at the rim, shooting from midrange, or draining threes, she can do it all - and she's continually great. In the last season of the CBA, she won the MVP and the finals MVP AGAIN, averaging more than 28.1 points a game. If the Penguins make it far, she will be the primary reason why. Though Shaddon-Ywenov and Vatnav can help, Lia is still the engine that makes the team go around.

SF Anidra Roxanoff

Often regarded as not much of a scorer, Roxanoff's presence is felt more at the boards, helping with the rebounding game. She does have a sweet midrange jumper, and she is known in the Chromatik Basketball scene as Foxy Roxie due to her ability to come through in the clutch. Don't pay much attention to how many points she scores; pay more attention to when she scores those key baskets.

PF Anton Vatnav

A season veteran by this point, Vatnav repeated as the best three-point shooter in the CBA last season, hitting on 44.5% of attempts. His sweet spot is from the left side, but when he gets hot, he can single-handedly change the tempo of a game. His consistency in how often he hits the big shots is what sets him apart from the rest. He is one of the reasons why the Hurons will likely be the team to dethrone the Saints in the near future, though they keep losing for now.

C Maude Zwaheil

The best defender on the squad, as well as the leading rebounder, Zwaheil has led the CBA in rebounds for seven straight seasons while also improving her free-throw percentage, which is over seventy percent now. A good night for Maude is twenty boards and seven points.

BENCH
PG Zachary Chesevsky

An all-rounder who is a threat for a triple-double every time he is on the court, Chesevsky's rise has been overshadowed by Shaddon-Ysenov's potential and brilliance. If she falters, or if the team needs a different kind of presence, he's available. The best part? He knows how to remain unnoticed and play for the team. Joining a new-look Felswyr the past season, he was their leading scorer as they made it to the final four.

SG Jordan Merkoff

Jordan Merkoff has tremendous stamina and an endless motor. He is the busiest busybody in the squad, and likes to have at least one of every item that stats track by the end of every game. It's a thankless job, but he appreciates the challenge.

SF Howard Dwyer

Capable of a hot hand for a good stretch per game, Dwyer can be called upon in key situations to turn the tide.

PF Michaelangelo Chouster

A more defensive option, Chouster doesn't score much, but excels in removing the biggest threat from the opposition.

C Mack Eduardson

An offensive Center? More common than you would think - Mack Eduardson tends to be decent off the glass but loves to dunk over people and smear it on their face.

RESERVES

G Kim Hae-Ri

A purely aggressive guard who does not mind drawing fouls or contact every time she drives to the net, her liability is her inability to contribute on the defensive end.

F Ishani Hauntzer

Master of the small ball, a player who dishes assists first before scoring.

Strategy:
The Chromatik Team focuses on solid ball-handling and clean transition play, with an emphasis on always running the clock down whenever possible. This means that there aren't as many fast breaks, instead focusing on time of possession and making every possession count. They plan a zone on defense, and are rather good at deflecting shots but not very good at causing turnovers. This team's tentative goal is to make the Quarterfinals.

Part 0 / Roster – Be Hopeful. And have belief in Fate, and hope that everything will go well for us on the IBC of 38.

Chief Aviator Gwen Tracer Hepburn “Fate of Existence and the Omniverse” Ellen Trixie Caitlin Foxworthy Avril Verlene Eveline Celinda Sammy Doris T-Rev Oxton Arielle Lindall Leslie Vitesse Allison’s recent debuts in NSSCRA, even if she didn’t make it to the Top 4, was an inspiration to us all! Perhaps 4 is a theme for us here this time. After all, we placed 4th in the international ranks, based on a series of calculations done from the performances of the previous seasons and matches, with reference to that of the other teams. For this time, it would seem that we would not be playing against Drawkland, which is a bit of a bummer! Our line-up includes players and teams from the following nations: Sarzonia, Benjium, Græntfjall, Gran Saguaro, and Nordic Airland. Will we be able to replicate our success in the qualifiers just like with last time? Will we be submitting a new or the usual court for the teams in our groups to play in. And more importantly – will Gwen’s Angels ascend beyond 4th (which is already impressive)? We shall see and wait with much anticipation. Gwen’s Angels will be running an all-men starter for this season.

GRAN SAGUARO NATIONAL TEAM
EQUIPO NACIONAL DE BALONCESTO GRAN SAGUARO

*

OVERVIEW

Básquetbol is either the second- or third-most popular sport in Gran Saguaro, depending on where you are and who you ask — in some urban cities on the southern coast, the game is even more widely followed than football. Gran Saguaro's highest basketball governing body is the SaguAiro™ LigaDUNK, a haphazardly-run organization with an official 60-game season in the winter and an assortment of loosely-planned "friendlies" throughout the rest of the year, comprised of eighteen franchised teams that frequently rotate in and out of existence (often, if an owner wants to sell a LigaDUNK team and cannot get what they paid for it, they will "yard sale" the nickname*, players, court, trademark, color scheme, logo, and local broadcast station affiliate rights to make up their investment. Then, the corporate sponsor will often find a new team, usually the franchise being created to take up the newly open spot — which means that sponsors often stay in the LigaDUNK far longer than the average team does, and some teams can even amass a collection of color schemes and broadcast affiliates as a result of such yard sales — the San Armando Altos, for example, have seven "exclusive" local broadcasters). Basketball is far more popular among young people than the old — a good sign for its future in Gran Saguaro.

Following last year's less-than-desired performance, Gran Saguaro is creating another national basketball team (like most Saguareño sports leagues, the LigaDUNK is gender-segregated; which means the squad will be all-male, picked from the more popular mens' division of the ligD — calls to gender-integrate Saguareño basketball have so far fallen on deaf ears, but a coed national team is not unlikely for the future...). The planning sessions, which included every coach in the LigaDUNK, star former players, basketball media figures, government bureaucrats, and a randomly-picked pool of fans, took nearly a year of fraught debate to conclude — in the end, players chosen will be paid around 110,000 pesos per match (roughly 6,000 NSD); merchandising rights were awarded in a raffle exclusively to Rico Monterey, a high-end mens department-store brand that specializes in handbags; the players' shoes, which they can personalize, have to feature support for a good cause; if the team is eliminated in the group stage, every player will miss the first 15 matches of the regular season; and on-court celebrations cannot be "excessively vulgar". The Sport Ministry gave the players their blessing and personalized neckties in a televised ceremony.

The Saguareño team is quite small, a side effect of the nation's average male height (5'5), so in response the team has had to become quick, coordinated, and accurate to stay competitive. Although, to be honest, it's unknown how competitive they will really be — this is the national team's debut, and a big stage for a big embarrassment to take place on...

TEAM

Head Coach: Gaspar Vicente (Head Coach of the National Team in IBC 37; Coach of the Encino Papas since 2019; won a Bold Ball in 1998, and a national championship with the Llorarores Altos in 1996, 1998; the Isla Rica Cocos in 1999; and now-defunct Yerba Seals in 2001)
Assistants: Marvin Menendez, Yunus Joaquín
Kit Boy: Jhony Tejada

STARTERS

#1 | Pedro Kendrick [PG] ( 5'10| 23 y.o. | Trinidad Tigres )
Kendrick is a small, versatile player whose rapid rise was bolstered by the best showing of the team at the IBC 37. The Tigres' youngest ever captain, he's known to intently analyze game film and has a reputation for being willing to point out the flaws in other players' game, usually at the worst moments; he's even drawn his own plays, one of which, the "Kendrick Special", won the 2021 championship in overtime against the San Armando Wings. Nevertheless, Kendrick has a well-earned reputation for being both hotheaded and foul-prone, though he insists the two aren't related...

#22 | Yovani García [SG] ( 6'2 | 21 y.o. | San Armando Altos )
A star of San Basilio College basketball, he had to miss the NSCAA due to a painful wrist injury. His selection was slightly controversial, and his nomination as a starter was shocking — coach Gaspar Vicente declared him "a diamond in the rough" and there is a lot riding on his performance in this IBC. The Lagordo Agave apparently have a multi-million peso deal in the works, and a solid performance will not hurt...

#4 | Tariq Soto [SF] ( 6'0 | 20 y.o. | Humboldt Fish )
Fresh off the draft where he went to the newly-minted Humboldt Fish (taking the place of the long-suffering Santa Fe Slam), Tariq Soto was the face of UPAM basketball since he illegally enrolled in their university at age 17. A former point guard, his play is fast and electric, but he is short for his position — much shorter than the now-retired Yunus Joaquín from the last IBC, which will likely cause him to struggle.

#0 |(c) Judah Tamovalo [PF] ( 6'10 | 25 y.o. | San Armando Wings )
The only one from the Saguareño team who can hold his own height-wise against other nations' basketball players, Judah Tamovalo's physical presence is only dwarfed by that which he has while on the ball. The son of a LigaDUNK star in the 80s, Samson Tamovalo, Judah may be an even more talented athlete than his father, a two-time MVP. His intelligence, power, size, and speed make him a natural fit for the captain. He struggled with wrangling his team last year as the debut captain, but the coaches have faith in him to deliver. Expect him to occasionally play as center.

#7 | Yuri Alvarado [C] ( 6'6| 26 y.o. | Encino Papas )
As last year's veteran, Andrés Omar, recovers from an MCL tear, Yuri Alvarado has been given the terrifying opportunity to start for the national team. Nicknamed "Yo-yo Yuri" for his up-and-down body movements while dribbling, Yuri's slightly embarassing habit actually signifies his greatest strength; his ability to play both low and high, technical in the paint yet able to pull up and shoot. He also has the team's highest vertical, and an untamable mess of curly hair. His coach at the Papas is the national team coach.

#3| Lucas Gallo [PG] ( 5'11 | 20 y.o. | Isla Rica Cocos )
#2| Andrés Omar [C] ( 6'8 | 28 y.o. | Vallcarca E.T.s )
#11| Wahed Abdelhakim [SF] ( 6'6 | 27 y.o. | San Armando Wings)
#22| Dani Curro [SF] ( 6'2 | 30 y.o. | Moab Osos )
#5| Berti Woítec Pérez [PF] ( 6'4 | 23 y.o. | Boca Rana Bullfrogs )
#19| Dominico Washington [PF] ( 6'3 | 24 y.o. | Pimería Scorch )
#8 | Inacio Obajiwe [SG] (6'1 | 27 y.o. | Palo Duro Burros )

This speech sounds generic. Totally beating around the bush. You download this from that AI chatbot, right? - Hahn grinned after reading the brief speech of the new national team coach, Laurent Oyon.

Of course. Do you know me, I hate this kind of speech. I'd prefer to be training them already. Why should I care about "motivational speeches" when what we need is to train more, play more and keep doing that to a constant schedule? - Oyon answered in a contempt tone as if he would like to say "Told you this a million times already."

Lisander National Basketball Team
Ranked 29th, 5.071 points, Mod +3

New Coach, Old Face
Having parted ways with Inaki Vizargorri, FLB found a new coach in College Basketball. Aged merely 38, and having stopped playing professionally only two seasons ago, Oyon is the youngest-ever coach in the NT history. He allegedly could even enter the court to play, at least, he's still in good physical form. He reaches the team with hopes to make a new team work out. A veteran from the brilliant generation that played from IBC 25 to 28, and a longtime friend of the National Team General Manager, Eric Hahn. Laurent Oyon, former Power Forward of the National Team, exactly as Manager Eric Hahn is, was formerly coaching his Alma Mater, Universitas Concordia Kasandora.

A few words by our new Coach, Laurent Oyon wrote:"We acknowledge that we will face challenges in this championship, considering the difficulties our basketball has been experiencing. However, it is essential that we remain motivated and committed, even in the face of adversity, so that we can improve our performance and overcome the obstacles ahead of us.

Instead of dwelling on the potential losses and unfavourable outcomes, let's focus on our team's growth and development. Each game presents an opportunity for us to learn, improve, and demonstrate our resilience. By maintaining a positive mindset and supporting one another, we can overcome the obstacles we face.

While it may not be an easy journey, it's crucial that we continue to work hard and maintain our commitment. We have the potential to grow as individuals and as a team, and every game provides a chance for us to showcase our progress. By embracing this mindset, we can channel our efforts into honing our skills, refining our strategies, and giving our best performance.

Let's face this championship with optimism and a united front. Together, we can rise above the challenges and strive for success, no matter the outcome of each individual game. Our collective efforts and dedication will ultimately shape our journey and help us grow stronger, both as athletes and as individuals."

Roster
Despite being much impressed with the usual selects by Vizargorri, Oyon is an adamant advocate of keeping very young players off the national team. To some, that's an idea considered outdated, one that prioritizes players who have spent four or five years in college basketball and devalues youngsters who, while still going to college, choose not to play "National Academic League" tournaments, and instead opt to start their professional careers early by sticking with their clubs. For others, it is something necessary, to ensure that these young people will have a proper education that will instruct them for life beyond sport, thus preventing these young people from unemployment after the end of their careers as athletes. It is an old debate and one that generates much discussion. Aristian Republic, Vizargorri's home country, doesn't have a college basketball culture, so he didn't limit himself to picking only players 22 and older, as Oyon is set to do, and did for this IBC edition, leaving behind 2x IBC veterans like Álvaro Vaz and Leandro Mader for being "too young".

Regarding Male/Female/Mixed Teams: As most of you know, Lisander isn't a mixed-gender sports nation, and athletes are separated by biological sex, not by gender. When referring to males playing against females or vice-versa, I will never imply the sex or gender of a character that is not mine. In these cases, I'll always refer to the surname of the opponent or to the initial of the name plus surname. If you can do the same, please do this.

Kronbia men's national basketball team

Overview

Baseball is the most popular sport in the Republic of Kronbia today. Republic of Kronbia has competitions for basketball, the league (Liga de Kronbia de Baloncesto-LKB) and the cup (Copa Kronbia), There are many young players playing basketball in a competition dedicated to universities. Competitions are also organized for students in secondary schools at every the city.

History

The sport of basketball arrived in the island in 1935, where a group of young people from the rich sons returning from Europe founded a team called El Caballeros Blancos (current Atletico San Rimo) in San Rimo, and then founded a group of young people in the capital A team called El Halcones (the current Deportivo de Halcon), the teams played friendly exhibition matches to spread the game in the cities, after their match in Costa de Palmeras, a group of sons of fishermen (as the Costa de Palmeras was a small fishermen’s city) thought of establishing their own team, and the same thing happened with the railway workers (Locomotora de Kronbia) They decided to establish their own team, in 1936 the four team captains met and decided to start a tournament under the name Copa Kronbia.
In 1938, the government established the Kronbian basketball Federation (Federacion de baloncesto de Kronbia) to organize basketball competitions and team matters.

The tournament continued with the change of the names of the teams and the details of the tournament until 1982, when it was decided to establish a professional league (Liga de Kronbia de Baloncesto-LKB) with a different system, and the cup championship (Copa Kronbia) continues also. To this day, the championship continues to entertain the basketball fans in the island and the world.

About Muralos
Muralos is a collection of islands in the Far East known as Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. It is home to a population of Russian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and indigenous (Ainu, Nivkh, and Orok) origins. The official language of Muralos is Esperanto- a language designed to be universal and easy to learn- but the population is exceptionally multilingual, with each citizen knowing an average of 4 languages.

About the Muralosian National Basketball Team
The Muralosian national basketball team is entirely new to multiversal competition; however, both men's and women's teams have existed since 1975, and both have competed regularly against the national teams of Asian Archipelago nations, including New Zhengguo, the Hainan Union, and the former nations of Fengjie, Li Qing, and Jiadao. As with the Muralosian national soccer team, the new Muralosian national basketball team is a consolidation of the men's and women's teams for the purpose of multiversal competition.

The head coach of the Muralosian national basketball team is Alexander Lasko, the first Muralosian basketball player to play overseas, first in the Soviet Union and later in the United States – two countries not generally recognized by the larger multiverse, but nevertheless extremely important to Muralosian history and politics. Rie Nishimura and Han Kim serve as assistant coaches.

Most of the Muralosian basketball team members play in Muralos. Some have expressed playing elsewhere in the multiverse, while others are content to remain within the Muralosian corner of the multiverse, or are otherwise unsure about playing overseas.

The Muralosian national basketball team's style is difficult to place into a box. The team prioritizes quick ball movement, but also has individual players create space and be a bit selfish. In a national team game, you may see a point guard hurl the ball across the court, but you may also see some surprisingly conservative, carefully considered passes. Perhaps risk-taking and beauty are favored in Muralosian basketball over safety and practicality, but it's not to say that the latter two traits are thrown out the window.

Roster of the Muralosian National Basketball Team
Center - Arseny Rudenko - Havenurbo Cruisers (Muralos) - Rudenko stands at 6'8" (203 cm.) and is an extremely dominant, extremely versatile presence in the Muralosian Basketball League, averaging 29 points per game, 20 rebounds per game, and 0.8 blocks per game in his ten-year career. Rudenko has won three league titles, two with CSKA Urbego-Basket and one with the Havenurbo Cruisers, his current team. (Alternates: Stefano Lee, Rebeka Nikiforova, Xiang Li)

Power forward - Kotaro Tsushima - CSKA Urbego-Basket (Muralos) - a generally unselfish player who can nevertheless turn up the heat when needed, relying on a consistent, quick-release jumper and an explosive dunking ability. In the Muralosian Basketball League, Tsushima led in assists from 2016 to 2020, averaging 9.3 assists per game. Like Muralosian national soccer team coach Jozefo Koltakov, Tsushima is a graduate of the preparatory school of the Félicien de Menil Conservatory of Music, where he studied violin. He often jokes that the Conservatory boasts "the best sports program in Muralos to never exist." (Alternates: Maria Lerta, Turushino, Ruixi Chen)

Small forward - Lidik - CSKA Urbego-Basket Women's (Muralos) - Lidik has impressive range, being nearly unstoppable from three but also unafraid to drive up to the basket. Currently in her first season with CSKA Urbego-Basket, Lidik set multiple records during her four years playing for the University League team at Urbego National University. (Alternates: Phillip Zhong, Rikardo Liang, Tatiana Demidenko)

Shooting guard - Armando Rodriguez Zhang - Haikou JLB (The Hainan Union) - Born to a Peruvian Muralosian father and a Hainanese mother, Rodriguez holds dual nationality with the Hainan Union, where he has played professional basketball for his entire career so far. His play style is characterized by physicality and range in equal parts. In the 23rd annual exhibition game between Haikou JLB and CSKA Urbego-Basket, Rodriguez led the Hainanese team to a 113-79 win, with 55 points, 12 rebounds, and 9 assists. (Alternates: Valora Yang, Daniil Lin, Jacobo Tu)

Point guard - Liang Chen - Okcidenta-Havenurbo Wanderers (Muralos) - Chen is a fan favorite, known for her court vision and her penchant for long-range passes. She excels on a pick and roll with her longtime teammate Lidik; the two played together at Urbego National University. (Alternates: Sara Kim, Lior Evans, Sergei Samarov)

Korth Senorendhin (1975)

C Regan yGorllaenarsan (27) - Llandy Locals
C Cibrán Junco (29) - Miradela Silvers
C Amaël Bernard (29) - Etouille Energie

Last time: several Yoshiman players to back up at centre. This time: yGorllaenarsan is unbeatable at the position, with even Junco having to recognise his superior in the Llandy Locals star. Kaname would have come back to the squad but injury concerns pushed the staff to get Bernard over Jui Kaname. There's even a case to be made for Goskin Smid, a very young breakout player in Schemerdrecht, but perhaps it's too early. From the three on the roster, we know they're healthy and proven.

PF Guendolina (f) Canton (29) - Ferrovente Tazers
PF Barnaby Cherstar (27) - Cirelbourne Spring Bloom
PF Mathias Goslin (27) - Couziers Centurions
PF Buford Oldlin (19) - Ansonville City Athletic
PF Dwna (f) yLeran (26) - Mawrystwyth Municipal

Two players return from the five selected to 37. Canton is forever, and Goslin has established himself as the prime backup, but staff couldn't surpass Cherstar. After years in the league, the Cirelbourne Spring player had such a powerful season that it wouldn't make sense to pass him up. Oldlin is in for the ride, and yLeran is reliable but probably won't play a lot.

SF Fidel Varon (27) - Ferrovente Tazers
SF Alegonu (f) Sarmazenindhen (25) - Mayara Blues
SF Pauline (f) Kersemaker (24) - Gehrenna Lions
SF Sylv Melanson (30) - Couziers Centurions
SF Nicolaas Valkenvlier (25) - Sterrenwolde Eagles

For years this position was by far the most stacked, but those days are changing. Varon and Sarmazenindhen are absolute top five players in the country, sure, but the depth at this position is quickly rivalled by other positions. Kersemaker and Melanson could play at SG here and there, though, but we don't expect that to be necessary as much as in IBC 37.

SG Willie Manisle (24) - Idyllwild Circle
SG Vincens Heidiep (20) - Senoren Diamonds
SG Kogo Ikemitsu (27) - Vurusen Floramancers
SG Sesyll yCerryir (28) - Llandy Locals
SG Charles Fernford (22) - Willowbourne Circle

Manisle is still the best option at SG, but the gap with the rest is closing, mainly due to Heidiep. Him and Fernford are quickly developing into proper options, while Ikemitsu and yCerryir - who were here last cycle - continue to bring depth to a position that still needs it.

PG Emuk Arzhendin (27) - Senoren Diamonds
PG Juvi Tanamula (29) - Gehrenna Lions
PG Marcellin Chery (24) - Etouille Amandine
PG Xiana (f) Lazo (25) - Montelo Snipers
PG Roelf Nieuwhout (27) - Schemerdrecht Scout

Tanamula and Chery are still on the team as two of the best players of this generation, but Arzhendin outplays them both and could well be the best player of the last league year. Lazo can't be underestimated but where he was a top two PG for the Snipers, he's now relegated to a virtual fourth spot.

After the implosion of the Ko-orenite Basketball League, the sport (barely) survived on small courts in big cities. Twelve clubs have emerged in a new national league, representing three urban areas. The Capital Cities (Maethoru, Mayara, Gehrenna, Senoren), Aminey (Lunay, Ouleux, Couziers/Linieux, Étouille - but Étouille and Linieux are not within Aminey by a bit), and Santa Teresa (Miradela, Montelo, Serramonte - and nearby Ferrovente). While they might not be underdogs in literally every game, the rankings pretend like this team has a lot more individual skill than it actually has. The strength of the positions is something like PG > SF/PF > (gap) > C > SG, factoring in the backups more than the starters, as we've got one class player at each position at least. Even then, the skill of the PG(s) is far more than C and SG. This is mostly solved by having players play at different positions - because how rigid are basketball positions anyway - and depending on the configuration there might be one extra PG leading to a more technical team shooting from distance or an extra forward leading to a bit more physical play, closer to the basket, relying on a high FG% and grabbing rebounds.

The league has since expanded to 48 teams - by far the largest in Ko-oren - with the new players on the new teams slowly breaking through into the NT. The original twelve outmuscle the rest by a mile - usually - so the good players gravitate towards that group of teams. Non-original teams with good programs are Idyllwild Circle, Greencaster Central, Arakura Tower, Schemerdrecht South, Straudum Power, the Vurusen Floramancers, and two Willowbourne teams: Centrals, and Circle. One original team clearly lags behind the rest: the Ouleux Sapphires don't seem to have the same attraction as the other Cote Austral teams.

Player bios:
Starters:
Kaminari Xanthus I, #23. Age 22, Height 6'8", Weighs 225 pounds. Plays for Jardim Azul Dolphins. (Player comp: Magic Johnson)
Captain of the team, ultimate Swiss Army Knife and already the greatest Kamijiroan basketball player ever. The Crown Prince of Kamijiro. He recently was married and changed his surname, as it is Royal tradition to take the wife's name. They are expecting twins soon, but he's refused to let it interfere with his duties to not only his domestic team in the KBA, but his duties to the Kamijiroan National Team. Formerly known as Kaminari Paixão II. Nicknamed "Prince of Lightning."

Leonardo Prince, #21. Age 27, Height 5'10", Weighs 215 pounds. Plays for Havenstad Hawks. (Player comp: Kyle Lowry)
The starting point guard for the Kamijiroan National Team. He's a little wide for a basketball player, but that hasn't stopped him from leading the league in steals this season, racking up an impressive 2.3 steals per game. He is also an impressive dime dropper and is a pretty good shooter from beyond the arc.

Michael Silva, #7. Age 24, Height 6'4", Weighs 229 pounds. Plays for Hanayuki Tenno. (Player comp: Tayshaun Prince)
The starting two-guard and another decent shooter from beyond the arc. He is well-known for his willingness to face off against the other team's best wing player, and uses his size well. He is a level-headed player and is usually the guy defusing situations and de-escalating fights. Silva's stats aren't eye-popping, but he does so many of the little things well.

Eddie Kitamura, #9. Age 29, Height 6'6", Weighs 207 pounds. Plays for the Isla Flores Flamingos. (Player comp: Bruce Bowen)
A quick-tempered forward with a penchant for being an instigator, he is the exact opposite of Michael Silva in terms of personality. He looks out for his teammates and if he feels that a call was unfair or another player is getting away with something, he tends to dish out vigilante justice on the court. He can shoot pretty well from deep, and most of his attempts come from the corners.

Phil Purdom, #14. Age 28, Height 6'6", Weighs 216 pounds. Plays for the Rose Garden Bloom. (Player comp: Draymond Green)
A diminutive power forward, he does the little things right, much like Michael Silva. However, he does it much differently, with his gameplay being focused heavily on setting good screens to free up shooters like Kitamura and Silva. He tends to find space in the in-between areas of the defense and makes running a zone a nightmare for defenses, as he spots up in the weak spots. His passing ability is very underrated, despite his low assist totals.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bench:
Eijiro Watanabe, #28. Age 22, Height 6'1", Weighs 210 pounds. Plays for the Rose Garden Bloom. (Player comp: Derrick Rose)
A lightning fast point guard with elite scoring ability, Watanabe's best attribute is his slashing to the rim. He also finds open teammates from the space he creates from his drives, and his pick and roll play as a ballhandler is elite for a rookie. Forces errors on defense. His best days are in front of him, and he will likely lake Leonardo Prince's spot in the starting five before long.

Christopher Jackson, #19. Age 28, Height 6'1", Weighs 200 pounds. Plays for the Bridgeport Thunderbirds. (Player comp: Ricky Rubio)
Not a flashy point guard by any means, but does the things he needs to do well. A reliable three-point shooter and passer, he is a natural point guard but has shifted over to the two-guard spot to make room for Eijiro Watanabe at the point guard spot. His defense is also pretty good, and he forces lots of turnovers.

Ryō Nakajima, #2. Age 21, Height 6'7", Weighs 211 pounds. Plays for the Southend Celestial. (Player comp: Kelly Oubre Jr.)
A fiery small forward who just set the KBA record for highest single-game +/- last season (+52). Not the highest volume shooter, but if he gets going he can definitely be a floor spacer. Normally, he's just a defensive-minded wing that disrupts play on the defensive side.

Gino Francis, #8. Age 28, Height 6'8", Weighs 250 pounds. Plays for the St. Jerome Power. (Player comp: Tim Thomas)
Another undersized power forward on the roster. He has been a key rotational player over his career. He's played 227 games in the KBA and only started two of them. He's a very good three-point shooter for his size, but his rebounding leaves a lot to be desired for a power forward. Nonetheless, he's still good at what he does, playing key rotational minutes and spacing the floor.

Mickael Francis, #17. Age 27, Height 6'7", Weighs 243 pounds. Plays for the Rose Garden Bloom. (Player comp: P.J. Tucker minus the shooting)
A very undersized power forward/center, he rounds out the main bench pieces. He is the brother of Gino Francis, and despite being the smaller of the two, he is a much better rebounder and scorer. His scoring numbers have dipped from last season, but that's excusable considering he is playing a much different role on a different team. His three-point shooting is non-existent, but he can score very well on the inside. He also grabs more rebounds than you'd expect a player of his stature to, considering his height difference compared to other centers in the league.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reserves:
João Vieira, #55. Age 19, Height 6'4", Weighs 224 pounds. Plays for the Havenstad Hawks. (Player comp: Leandro Barbosa)
A player in his sophomore year and brought along to gain experience on the international stage, he's nearly doubled his per games in every category this season. He is a primary scorer and has a bit of an outside shot, even if his percentages leave a bit to be desired. He likely won't see much game time unless it's a blowout.

Ryuji Kitamura, #5. Age 26, Height 6'3", Weighs 221 pounds. Plays for the Richmond Islanders. (Player comp: Kent Bazemore)
Unrelated to Eddie and Jiro Kitamura, Ryuji is a solid career backup player and currently provides some quality bench minutes for the Islanders. His defense is his main weakness, making him the black sheep of this team. His shooting is subpar as well. Does everything at a C- level, which makes him a balanced player. He is a former All-Star, but a litany of injuries sent his career downwards.

Leonardo Tanaka, #6. Age 27, Height 6'3", Weighs 211 pounds. Plays for the Nijimachi Ninjas. (Player comp: N/A)
Another player in the solid C range, he's expected to be an emergency back-up. He isn't much of a scoring threat and his percentages have dipped massively despite his lower volume compared to last season. Don't expect him to play too much.

Jiro Kitamura, #22. Age 27, Height 6'6", Weighs 216 pounds. Plays for the Isla Flores Flamingos. (Player comp: N/A)
Younger brother of Eddie Kitamura, he had a much more promising career before being struck with a nasty back injury that sidelined him for nearly a year. He's still a decent player, but he never panned into the player he was projected to be prior to his injury.

Toni de Jong, #20. Age 22, Height 6'10", Weighs 241 pounds. Plays for the Hikarimachi Lightning. (Player comp: Kwame Brown, but without the attitude)
A former first round pick a few seasons ago, he hasn't developed as many had hoped. He's still a decent young prospect, but many feel he's running out of time to do anything productive with his career. He's played 75 career games in three seasons and hasn't started a single one of them. He's the only true center on the Kamijiro roster, with the others being power forwards being slid into the five spot. He's a decent rebounder but is bang average at everything else. Averages 9.1 minutes per game for a contending Hikarimachi team.

Notes:
- We almost always play a 1-3-1 zone defense. It works well with this team, which has lots of size, and is getting faster, especially at guard. Situationally, we will switch to man to man or a box and 1 if the other team's star player is hot, but the 1-3-1 is the base.
- This team is built very different from past teams. They space the floor much better, they have spread the floor with a lot of players who can hit jumpers, especially three pointers. They also like to play fast.
- This team will run at almost any chance they get. While rebounding, especially on defense, is the team's weakest link, when they do get a rebound, they are able to push the ball, and so quickly.
- For the group stages, this team's rotation runs 12 deep, as Laboto will do his best to get all 12 players into the game for every single group stage game. However, they will almost certainly shorten the rotation to 8-9 players come the knockout stages. The rotation shrinks in the knockout stages, and in knockout games and other must wins, Laboto is willing to play his two young star players(Khoza and Abonyo) extremely heavy minutes (35+).

Recent History
This is their third appearance at the IBCs after an especially turbulent period surrounding the men's national basketball team. The team reached never before seen heights in this sport, winning 4 titles in a row- an accomplishment that has never been matched in any of the Grand Slam competitions (IBCs, WCoH, WC, World Bowl, WBC). 5 finals in a row, and obviously all of those championships, meant success was the name of the game. But of course, with success comes egos, and with the growth of the financial pot comes issues on how to split it. For financial reasons, and many others, players went on strike after IBC 33- sparked when the Olympic Committee, already facing a myriad of issues, tried to force NT players to play at home. They came back at IBC 36, and are trying to get back to previously achieved heights.

When legendary head coach Isaiah Lavaga decided to leave for club basketball in Quebec rather than strike-break and lead a squad of replacement players to IBC 34, the Banijan men's basketball team could not even send a delegation to the tournament- a stunning fall. They did not resolve the issue in time for IBC 35 either, as players and the Olympic Committee seemed to be in a never-ending standoff over the national team. But finally, shortly before the last Olympiad in the Twin Cities, the players and the Olympic Committee were finally able to reach an agreement.

Nearly half a decade of striking. The senior NT was finally back in the fold. The Olympics were good- falling to Hannasea in the semifinals, and earning a bronze medal, the second ever medal the men's basketball team has ever earned at the Olympiad. And hopes were raised after the AOBCs just went like old times, with Banija cruising to their third regional title.

Oscar Laboto, the new head coach, urged caution with this team. "This ain't the same team we had back in the day." He told reporters. "The IBCs are an entirely different beast. We're back at the bottom of the totem pole, and we're gonna take some real lumps. Fans will need to be patient." Indeed, he told reporters it would be 2 or 3 cycles before the team could legitimately be considered contenders- for now, despite their history, simply reaching the knockout stages would be performing 'beyond expectations'.

And it seemed as if that prediction would be proven at least relatively true. With how top heavy this sport is, Banija has been to the knockout stages of the last two IBCs- winning one game in each(Ro24 at IBC 36, the Ro16 at IBC 37), before getting felled by their archrivals, Quebec- who just won their first ever IBC title just last cycle. We've flown back to the top 10 for the first time in 5 cycles- entering the tournament ranked 5th. While probably not a true contender, it is enough for dark horse status. Can the team continue its ascent back to the top of the proverbial hoops mountain?

Greetings, compatriots!
It’s TTV from Katterimunk, where games of International Basketball Championship will begins soon.
Our team is going to this tournament for the ninth time, and the fans expect a lot from it: two years ago it was able to reach the playoffs for the first time, and a year ago it reached the quarterfinals, giving way to the future bronze medalist and number one in the ranks. The head coach's warnings that even repeating this success will be very difficult, no one listens - according to the already established tradition. However, even the most inveterate skeptics believe that the team is quite capable of finally equalizing the balance of victories and defeats.

Meanwhile, this time we have a significantly updated team, Vladimir Finn drop from the team highly experienced master Torfinn Timden, the star of domestic basketball, and now have only two realtively young and unexperienced players play in PG position - one of whom always used only as sub for a Timden in the national team, and the second never participated in international matches at all. This move is highly controversial and much criticised. In general, the roster has been updated in favor of younger players - apparently, the head coach is counting on players who just entering the age of sports maturity, which is understandable, given his habit of offering a high pace of play that requires good physical and tactical preparation, and insisting on following his instructions to the fullest possible extent.

Our lads started the last tournament in the fifth pot, in this championship we got into the second pot. It must be noted, that right now such a progress in ranks was a subject of intense pride of fans, but they are not too kind to the team while players slowly and painfully climb mountain of world basketball in the most recent championship. In our group D we will meet both old acquaintances and teams that our athletes had never met before. The favorite of both group stage and whole tournament, of course, is TJUN-ia, who claims the highest places in the world basketball. Rise of this team is the object of heavy envy of our basketball fans. Fate brought our teams together seven times, and only once did our basketball players win. SWEN we meet on the paths of world basketball, in the last tournament, and our lads, not without much difficulties, but got the victory. And two years ago we met with Lisander, it was a match for a ticket to the playoffs, and, again, our team celebrated the victory, but it was very difficult to get it. The other two teams of our group are a mystery, they are both debutants of the tournament. There we can count only on the intelligence, ingenuity and experience of our head coach, and group stage obviously will not too easy.

Trolleborg Wings airline, which recently begins second hundred of destinations in the schedule (they have 106 countries in the list right now), will fly additional special flights to the places where team will play and cuts prices for regular flights by 30 percent, so we add our voice to urge everyone go and support team.

The coaching staff assembled for Sarzonia's national basketball team is the same. Joy Knight is still calling the shots. Kyle Trenton is still her right hand.

What's different about the Stars this time? Knight is more secure in her status as the court boss for Sarzonia. She has full-throated support of Lynn Trask and the Incorporated Basketball Federation Board of Governors. She also had the confidence to remake the team in her own image. Gone is the traditional two-guard, three-forward lineup. In its place is a three-guard lineup with no one among the starting five taller than 6-foot-9.

"We might concede some heft on the glass," Knight conceded. "I want us to get out and run more. I also want us to make sure we get good looks and not force up bad shots."

Forward Micah Hollings will likely match up again opposition centres, but 6-foot-8 Marty Jacobson will be handling the starting jump balls.

"Marty's got great ups and he's been able to make up for some of his lack of height during our exhibition schedule," Trenton said. "Holls is a strong, tough dude and he's great at positioning and getting himself into a good spot to grab rebounds."

Of all the things that have changed about the Stars, one thing hasn't. Shooting guard Mike West remains not only on the team, but as the team's unquestioned best player and natural leader. Knight said there was never any consideration about not having West on the squad.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" Knight asked, not bothering to hide a look of incredulity. "He's been our best player since Tom [former manager Thomas Manningham] first took over. If anything, he's even more integral to what we're doing now."

West said he was focused on improving the team's prospects after narrowly missing the knockout rounds by tiebreaker -- and said tiebreaker being an overtime defeat to the eventual IBC 36 champion.

"We were so close last time we were here," he said. "We want to progress."

For Sarzonia to do that, they'll have a tough group to navigate, including a fourth ranked Valentine Z side the Stars defeated with a buzzer-beater in the group stage in Knight's first match as full-time manager. Tenth ranked Græntfjallalso awaits in Group F. Also in the group are No. 30 Gran Saguaro, 50th ranked Benjium and unranked Nordic Airland.

"It's not gonna be easy, that's for sure," Knight said.

Nova Anglicana Lions National Basketball Team

Offensive Style: Death Lineup/Small Ball/Versatile/Pace and Space
Defensive Style: Press/Junk
Style Modifier (if applicable): +3.5
Captain: Duncan Muir
Colors: Red and White Home, Blue and White Away
Arena: National Arena (doubles as hockey stadium)
Arena Location: Londinium
Arena Capacity: 14,000
Head Coach: Lawrence Roberts
Assistant Coaches: Mark Long, Brad Walsh

Roster

Starters

G #3 Félix Dedeaux, 6'3, 31 - Quebecois is a pure point guard, Roberts says he's got the highest basketball IQ of anybody on the team, a wizard with the ball, now has more of an offensive game
G #8 David Beck, 6'5, 29 - aggressive on defense, sometimes too aggressive, but can pour it in on the offensive end from 2 or 3, not a great driver
G #12 Simon Moran, 6'5, 33 - came in as 3-and-D kind of guy, but has blossomed into strong all-around player, hard-nosed worker
F #25 Greg Lindsey, 6'7, 30 - high-flying player reminds many of former Lions star Kelvin Braxton, very athletic, great rebounder, slasher, pesky on D, not much of a jump shot
F #22 Marc-Antoine Bolduc, 6'9, 28 - improving three-point game, but much more of a face-up and jump shot or drive kind of a guy, can get pushed around on D, but very quick as well

Reserves
G #14 Julian Thornton, 6'4, 30 - bombs away from 3 for this sharpshooter, not much of a defender, but more down to technique than lack of ability
G #35 Jesse Morton, 6'4, 23 - just barrels down the lane like an unstoppable freight train, can put it up or pass it, quick hands on D, needs a better jumper
G #17 Derek Bowman, 6'4, 27 - absolutely dialed in from 3-point land and tenacious on defense, doesn't do much to create his own shot or shots for others
G #10 Matt Butler, 6'5, 25 - seems a little big for a point guard, but has great handles, can shoot the J over or muscle up smaller defenders, kind of a combo guard
F #32 Nicholas Erickson, 6'9, 22 - the kid is ripped, rebounder extraordinaire, great at drawing fouls on the inside, will be exposed if drawn away from basket, looking to learn from Rose on jump shots, passing, and perimeter defending
F #27 Eli Rose, 6'9, 33 - slender Rose is somewhat of a point-forward type, pass-first guy who is excellent at finding the open man, can be dangerous on pick-and-pop
C #48 Danny Cohen, 6'11, 32 - silky-smooth jumper for a big guy, strong on defense, will mainly play if opposing team heavily features a big guy or as goalie in pressing situations

Playing Style

The Lions continue their small ball lineup, with one player in the starting lineup and only four players on the entire team taller than 6'8. They want to spread the floor and force opponents to switch on defense to either create bad matchups for driving past taller, slower players, or shooting 3s over smaller defenders. They run whenever possible, and try to use their superior pace and stamina to wear out opposing defenses. They can drive, but their true strength is outside shooting. On defense, it starts with a 1-2-1-1 3/4 to full-court zone press that attempts to wear down opposing offenses, force them to burn the shot clock before setting up their offense, and to create turnovers. If the press fails, they typically fall back into a 3-2 matchup zone as the basic defense. However, the defense typically changes several times during the game, with the Lions showing a 2-3 against inside teams, a 1-3-1 if they want to trap and cause havoc, a triangle-and-two with Moran and Beck glued to the two best players, a box-and-one with Beck in the terrier role chasing all over the court, or even a man-to-man if the situation calls for it. They also substitute frequently to maintain the pace of play and adapt their defense to the personnel they have and the opponents' personnel. It's a smart and athletic team, if not a particularly big one.

Today, the national basketball team left the capital, Ciudad de Halcon, to Katterimunk, To participate in the International Basketball Championship 38.

When the Kronbian basketball Federation (Federacion de baloncesto de Kronbia) decided to participate in the International Basketball Championship 38, they decided that there would be no better Coach Hector Mendoza, nicknamed "The Commander" to lead the team in the IBC 38. There are hopes and aspirations to achieve achievement in the first international participation in the NS tournaments.

Hector Mendoza left the Costa de Palmeras team in last season, with whom he achieved five consecutive titles during eight seasons in which he coached the team. The 53-year-old coach announced that he would take a break from training this year. Mendoza, the legendary coach who trained many university teams and teams in the LUB, and won several championships, which caught the attention of Costa de Palmeras's management, who hired him during a period when the team was suffering without championships for nine consecutive years, so that he could build a team that achieved a distinguished achievement that counts for this generation.
